  1. lived in perfect harmony. But what began as blessing has ended in curse. God the loving

  2. creator had given to Adam and Eve, the first man and the first woman, all that they ever

  3. needed. It was all theirs to enjoy and delight in. Here I'm going to stop because, thanks

  4. Connor, you've reminded me. I've got little notes here as well.

  5. So keep your Bibles open at Genesis. Take two. We'll start again. It was all so beautiful.

  6. Everyone and everything lived in perfect harmony. But what began as blessing has ended in curse.

  7. God the loving ruler and creator had given to Adam and Eve, the first man and the first woman,

  8. all that they ever needed. It was all theirs to enjoy and delight in. And all they had to do

  9. was obey. Look at chapter 2 verse 16. And the Lord God commanded the man,

  10. you are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge

  11. of good and evil. For when you eat of it, you will surely die. But like us, they were not content with

  12. what they had been given. They wanted it all. They wanted to be like God. And so they listened

  13. to Satan and his lies. Chapter 3 verse 4. You will not surely die, the serpent said to the woman.

  14. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God,

  15. knowing good and evil. And with that desire driven from their hearts to be like God, they reached out

  16. and they ate the fruit. And at that very moment of rebellion against God, everything broke. The

  17. blessing turned to curse. Where the world was once teeming with life, there was now the stench of death.

  18. Where man and woman once enjoyed God, there was now a fear of God. Where they walked with their

  19. creator in openness, they now ran and hid in shame. Rather than enjoying the blessing of God, they now

  20. experienced the curse of God. Chapter 3 verse 23. So the Lord God banished him from the garden of Eden

  21. to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed him on the east side

  22. of the garden of the garden of Eden and cherubim with there with a flaming sword, flashing back and forth

  23. to guard the way to the tree of life. And that separation, that intimacy that they had is now been

  24. separated. And it's what the world and we all experience today. We are cut off from the source of all love

  25. and life with the fearful expectation of facing God's judgment and eternal and living death. All because,

  26. like Adam, we want to live as if we are God, making up the rules for our own lives, deciding what is good

  27. and evil. Now the awful truth is, we can do nothing about it. We cannot undo what we have broken.

  28. Of course, we've tried to fix it, but history proves that we've done very little to make things better.

  29. We could say the world has just gotten worse.

  30. The reality is, when we are the problem, we can't be the solution. So what are we going to do about it?

  31. Well, the story of the Bible is not about what we can do, but it's all about what God does for us.

  32. Not what we do, but what God does. Not because we deserve it or earn it, but because of God's incredible

  33. and amazing grace. I have a definition here that I think works very well. God's grace is God's

  34. independent decision to treat rebels like us in kindness. And we've already seen glimpses of his

  35. grace at work at the very beginning of the story. So have a look at chapter four. Cain was

  36. Adam and Eve's first son. But look what we read in verse eight of chapter four. Now Cain said to his

  37. brother Abel, let's go out to the field. And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother

  38. Abel and killed him. Now look at how God responds in verse 13. God said to the Lord, my punishment is

  39. more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land and I will be hidden from your presence.

  40. I will be a restless wanderer on the earth and whoever finds me will kill me. But the Lord said to him,

  41. not so. If anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over. Then the Lord put a mark

  42. on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. You see, in an act of grace, he is protected.

  43. God does not treat him as he deserves. We see the same again if we look on in chapter five.

  44. Here we have this history of the human race. And because we've all rebelled, we all die. So look at

  45. how the theme runs. Verse five, altogether Adam lived 930 years and then he died. Verse eight, Seth

  46. lived 912 years and then he died. Verse 11, Enosh lived 905 years and then he died. And look at the

  47. very end of the section, verse 31. Altogether Lamech lived 770 years and then he died. And on and on it

  48. goes, it's telling us that the tragic fate of every human being is this death. But in the middle of

  49. the story or in the middle of this history of death, we see God's act of grace. Look in the middle of

  50. chapter five, verse 23. And here we read about Enoch. And what do we read there? Verse 23,

  51. altogether Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God. Then he was no more because God took him

  52. away. Do you see right in the middle of death, Enoch does not die. God in his grace spares Enoch the pain

  53. of death so he might live with God. Even when humans are at their worst, God acts in grace. Look at

  54. chapter six, verse five. This is the lead up to the flood and to the story of Noah and the ark. But read

  55. verse five, the Lord saw how great man's wickedness on earth had become and that every inclination of the

  56. thoughts of his heart was only evil all of the time. And the Lord was grieved that he had made man on the

  57. earth and his heart was filled with pain. So the Lord said, I will wipe mankind from whom I have created

  58. from the face of the earth. Now let's remember as God gives this description of this broken world,

  59. Adam is also part of that broken order. He's included in verses five and six. But look how God responds.

  60. Verse eight, but Noah found favor or the word there is Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. In other words,

  61. God in his goodness treated Noah with kindness. Noah, who was a rebel, received God's grace. And we know

  62. that Noah and his family were saved as if God rebooted and started creation again, another start, another

  63. beginning by his grace. So here is our God who independently decides to treat rebels like us in

  64. kindness. And it's God's desire and his plan and his longing to show this grace, not just to one or two

  65. individuals, but that the whole world and every nation and every race would come to experience his

  66. amazing grace. And the way that God was going to do it was through a covenant, a promise.

  67. A covenant is like a legal contract. It's a promise between two people or two parties. A marriage is a very

  68. good example of this. So when two people get married, they enter into a covenant relationship. This

  69. lifelong commitment to love one another, to be faithful and loyal to one another and not to leave each other.

  70. So we had a wedding recently of Sam and Yelena. When they got married, they made their vows or their

  71. promises and they gave rings to each other as a sign of that covenant. It's a symbol of their binding

  72. agreement to one another. And in a sense, they are saying, I'll never leave you. I'll be committed to you.

  73. I'll be faithful. I'll be loyal. Now it was through a covenant, through a promise that God would show his

  74. grace to the world. God saying, I am going to be faithful to you, loyal, committed. I will not leave you.

  75. You will be my bride. You will be mine.

  76. And that covenant was made with a man called Abraham.

  77. Now there's three things we need to know about this promise, this covenant that God would make.

  78. Have a look at chapter 12. The first thing we need to know

  79. is that it is God's gracious intervention.

  80. Genesis chapter 12, verse 1.

    Genesis 12:1

  81. The Lord said to Abraham, we know that his name was later changed to Abraham, so we'll just use that

  82. name. We won't get confused. So the Lord said to Abraham, leave your country, your people, and your

  83. father's household, and go to the land I will show you. But well, who was this character? Where did he

  84. come from? Well, the Bible tells us a little bit later on that Abraham was an idol worshipper.

  85. He didn't know or worship the true creator God. He wasn't anybody special. He wasn't somebody who was

  86. living a particularly good life that God looks down and goes, hey, he's doing very well. I think

  87. I'll speak to him. No, it's kind of out of the blue. There's nothing special about Abraham, but yet

  88. God reaches down and chooses him. This is an act of intervening grace in the life of one man.

  89. And having intervened into his life, God makes this amazing promise, verse 2. He says, I will make you

  90. into a great nation, and I will bless you. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

  91. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you, I will curse. And all peoples on earth

  92. will be blessed through you. It's hard to miss it. Primarily, this is a promise that God is going to

  93. bring blessing. Abraham is going to be blessed. But more importantly, look at the end of verse 3 again.

  94. All peoples on earth, every tribe, tongue, and language will be blessed through you.

  95. Now let's remember, at this point in God's story, the world is experiencing this terrible curse.

  96. The world experiences death and pain and suffering. Men and women are cut off from God,

  97. the source of all life and love. But all of that is going to change. God has not given up on the world

  98. or the people he has made. He is graciously going to intervene, and he promises to bring blessing

  99. instead of curse. And so someone from the line of Abraham, somebody from his family in years to come,

  100. is going to bring this blessing that would reach all peoples on earth, and nobody would be excluded.

  101. That is God's intervening grace.

  102. But we also need to see that there is a binding obligation on our part.

  103. You see, when God made his promise to Abraham,

  104. well, it was dependent on Abraham having children.

  105. Through a descendant of Abraham, the world would be blessed.

  106. The problem is that Abraham and his wife Sarah are very old, and they don't have any children.

  107. And without a child, the promise of blessing is not going to continue.

  108. So God reminds them again of his promise to bless.

  109. So chapter 17, verse 3, he repeats the promise to him again.

  110. Verse 3, Abraham fell down, and God said to him,

  111. As for me, this is my covenant with you.

  112. You will be the father of many nations.

  113. No longer will you be called Abraham.

  114. Your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.

  115. I will make you very fruitful.

  116. I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

  117. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant

  118. between me and you and your descendants after you

  119. for the generations to come to be your God

  120. and the God of your descendants after you.

  121. And this whole land of Canaan where you are now an alien.

  122. I will give as an everlasting possession to you

  123. and your descendants after you.

  124. And I will be their God.

  125. It echoes out of Eden, isn't it?

  126. Where God was with his people and he says,

  127. Adam and Eve, I'm going to be your God.

  128. And he's promising again to Abraham,

  129. I'm going to restore all of that for the whole world.

  130. God has not given up.

  131. He will graciously see that blessing will come.

  132. But you see, in these promises,

  133. God is not just committed to Abraham.

  134. Abraham now in turn must be committed to God.

  135. In response, Abraham must make promises to God himself.

  136. Abraham has a binding obligation to obey God in everything

  137. so that he will experience God's blessing.

  138. So chapter 17, verse 9,

  139. Then God said to Abraham,

  140. As for you, you must keep my covenant.

  141. You've got to keep your side of the bargain.

  142. You and your descendants after you for the generations to come.

  143. And this is the covenant with you and with your descendants after you.

  144. The covenant that you are to keep.

  145. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

  146. You are to undergo circumcision,

  147. and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

  148. Rather than exchange rings,

  149. which is a whole lot less painful,

  150. they're given a mark.

  151. The foreskin of the penis would be cut off.

  152. It was a daily reminder of their commitment to the covenant.

  153. In the most natural act of a man,

  154. going for a wee,

  155. or for the most intimate moment with your wife,

  156. you could not escape the fact of your binding obligation

  157. that you must obey God.

  158. So now it's very clear that to obey God,

  159. if you want to experience the blessings of God,

  160. you must obey God.

  161. And if you disobey,

  162. if you break the covenant,

  163. then the blessing will stop.

  164. The problem is,

  165. so far in the story,

  166. men and women like you and I

  167. have a very poor record of being faithful and loyal to God.

  168. So the question remains,

  169. what's going to happen

  170. if Abraham fails to keep his side of the covenant?

  171. God will be committed,

  172. but what happens if Abraham isn't committed?

  173. Well, here's the third part of the covenant

  174. that we must understand.

  175. God's gracious substitution.

  176. And for this, we need to go back to Genesis 15.

  177. You see, God has been reminding Abraham of his promise.

  178. And now Abraham wants this confirmation

  179. that God is going to keep his promise.

  180. So chapter 15, verse 8.

  181. Abraham says,

  182. O sovereign Lord,

  183. how can I know that I shall gain possession of it?

  184. How do I know I'm going to get the land?

  185. How do I know this blessing from you is going to come?

  186. Verse 9,

  187. So the Lord said to him,

  188. bring me a heifer,

  189. a goat and a ram,

  190. each three years old,

  191. along with a dove and a young pigeon.

  192. Abraham brought all these to him,

  193. cut them in two,

  194. and arranged the halves opposite each other.

  195. The birds, however,

  196. he did not cut in half.

  197. Now what a strange thing to be doing.

  198. Now picture the scene here.

  199. On either side is half a heifer,

  200. half a goat and half a ram.

  201. And on the other side is the other half of the heifer,

  202. goat and ram.

  203. And two birds facing each other.

  204. And let's remember,

  205. Abraham,

  206. well, he couldn't just go down to Tesco's

  207. or his local butcher

  208. and get them all nice,

  209. nicely pre-prepared and pre-wrapped

  210. and all nice and clean.

  211. No, he had to slaughter those animals there himself.

  212. So what we have,

  213. if you can picture this scene,

  214. is bits of meat on either side

  215. and in the middle is this bloody mess.

  216. But what's it all for?

  217. What's it all about?

  218. Well, have a look at verse 12.

  219. As the sun was setting,

  220. Abraham fell into a deep sleep

  221. and thick and dreadful darkness came over him.

  222. Verse 17.

  223. When the sun had set

  224. and darkness had fallen,

  225. a smoking pot with a blazing torch appeared

  226. and passed between the pieces.

  227. On that day,

  228. the Lord made a covenant with Abraham.

  229. You see,

  230. when we enter into a contract,

  231. what we normally do is sign a piece of paper.

  232. We put our signature to it.

  233. Which usually means that

  234. if you break the contract,

  235. there's a penalty or a fee that you must pay.

  236. We have it with our bills,

  237. with electricity and gas.

  238. You sign a contract

  239. and if you break that contract

  240. or leave early,

  241. then there's a cost to pay for it.

  242. Well, in these times,

  243. what they often did was

  244. they would cut an animal in half

  245. and place them opposite each other.

  246. This was part of the contract.

  247. Then the two people

  248. who entered into the contract

  249. would walk between the cut-up animal.

  250. And in doing this,

  251. they were saying,

  252. may it be done to us

  253. if either of us

  254. break the covenant?

  255. In other words,

  256. if I break my side of the contract,

  257. may I be cut up or punished

  258. like this animal?

  259. But did you notice

  260. what happens in Abraham's vision?

  261. Look again at verse 17.

  262. When the sun had set

  263. and darkness had fallen,

  264. a smoking pot

  265. with a blazing torch

  266. appeared

  267. and passed between

  268. the pieces.

  269. You see,

  270. this fire pot,

  271. this blazing torch

  272. that we see in the vision,

  273. represents

  274. the presence of God.

  275. Whenever we see fire,

  276. particularly in the Old Testament,

  277. it's a sign

  278. that God has showed up.

  279. You know the story

  280. of Moses in the burning bush.

  281. God is there.

  282. You know the story

  283. of the fiery cloud.

  284. God is there.

  285. And so God shows up

  286. in this vision.

  287. But it's not Abraham

  288. and God

  289. who walk through.

  290. It's just God

  291. by Himself.

  292. God alone

  293. walks through

  294. this bloody mess

  295. by Himself

  296. in between

  297. these two animals.

  298. And in this vision,

  299. God is saying

  300. to Abraham,

  301. Abraham,

  302. I will take responsibility.

  303. May it be done

  304. to me

  305. if either of us

  306. breaks the covenant.

  307. I will take the blame

  308. if you fail

  309. to keep the promises.

  310. I will step in for you.

  311. I will be cut up for you.

  312. I will be the substitute

  313. for you.

  314. I will take the blame

  315. if you disobey.

  316. What an amazing

  317. act of grace.

  318. It doesn't seem right.

  319. It seems impossible.

  320. But that

  321. is the kind of God

  322. that we have.

  323. Now,

  324. it doesn't take long

  325. for us to discover

  326. as we read on

  327. in the story

  328. that we just see

  329. how man's failure

  330. heightens

  331. and how God's grace

  332. has to intervene

  333. time and time again

  334. taking the blame

  335. for man's rebellion.

  336. You see,

  337. the rest of the story

  338. in Genesis

  339. from chapter 12 through

  340. is all about

  341. Abraham's family.

  342. They have Isaac.

  343. Isaac has Jacob

  344. and Esau.

  345. Jacob has his 12 sons

  346. which leads to

  347. the nation of Israel.

  348. And this is the family

  349. which is supposed

  350. to bring God's blessing

  351. to the world.

  352. They are to be

  353. conduits of God's grace

  354. to all the nations.

  355. But when we follow

  356. this story

  357. and read about them,

  358. they're a definition

  359. of failure.

  360. Read the story

  361. for yourself

  362. in chapters 12 to 50.

  363. It's a catalogue

  364. of deception

  365. and betrayal.

  366. Scheming and stealing

  367. and murder.

  368. This family of blessing

  369. is a complete

  370. and utter mess.

  371. They only add

  372. to the world's brokenness.

  373. They don't do anything

  374. to make it better.

  375. At every point

  376. in their generations,

  377. this family fails.

  378. But the amazing thing is

  379. is that God

  380. perseveres with them.

  381. He does not

  382. give up.

  383. With each new generation,

  384. He renews His promise

  385. to bless.

  386. It's as if He drags

  387. this family

  388. kicking and screaming

  389. through the story.

  390. Time after time,

  391. He displays His grace

  392. because He's made a promise.

  393. He says,

  394. I'm going to bless you

  395. and I will take the blame

  396. for your ongoing failure.

  397. They are here.

  398. Reluctant as they are,

  399. God takes them through.

  400. But this is not just

  401. a God of history

  402. away back then.

  403. This is our God today.

  404. He does not give up on me

  405. and He does not give up on you.

  406. He perseveres

  407. with our rebellion.

  408. In grace,

  409. He drags us

  410. kicking and screaming

  411. to a place

  412. of blessing.

  413. You see,

  414. the story of the Bible

  415. is about a God

  416. who is determined

  417. to bless us.

  418. He will not give up.

  419. After hundreds of years

  420. of dealing with

  421. the world's

  422. ongoing failure

  423. and we'll be looking

  424. at the story

  425. of this failure

  426. in the weeks to come,

  427. God into the midst of it

  428. speaks

  429. of a new promise,

  430. a new covenant.

  431. Have a look at

  432. Jeremiah chapter 31.

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  433. Almost in the middle

  434. of your Bible.

  435. Jeremiah chapter 31.

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  436. So this comes

  437. at the end

  438. of a people,

  439. a family

  440. and a nation

  441. who have just

  442. spiraled downward

  443. into decay

  444. and disorder

  445. and failure

  446. and into the midst

  447. of this,

  448. God yet again

  449. speaks His promise.

  450. And look what He says,

  451. Jeremiah chapter 31

    Jeremiah 31:31

  452. verse 31.

  453. The time is coming,

  454. declares the Lord,

  455. when I will make

  456. a new covenant

  457. with the house of Israel,

  458. with the house of Judah.

  459. Verse 33.

  460. This is the covenant

  461. that I will make

  462. with the house of Israel

  463. after that time,

  464. declares the Lord.

  465. I will put my law

  466. in their minds

  467. and I will write it

  468. on their hearts

  469. and I will be their God

  470. and they will be my people.

  471. End of verse 34.

  472. For I will forgive

  473. their wickedness

  474. and will remember

  475. their sins no more.

  476. How can God do that?

  477. How can God change

  478. this catalogue

  479. and this history

  480. of rebellious hearts?

  481. How can He do it?

  482. How can He just wipe out

  483. our sins and failures?

  484. Just like that.

  485. Well, just as He had made

  486. that promise to Abraham

  487. that one from His family,

  488. a descendant of Abraham

  489. would come

  490. and would bring blessing

  491. to the world

  492. and to the nations.

  493. And that person

  494. was Jesus Christ.

  495. He comes to bring

  496. this new covenant,

  497. one that will deal

  498. with our failures

  499. once and for all.

  500. And we see that take place

  501. in Matthew chapter 26.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  502. Have a look in Matthew chapter 26.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  503. Here Jesus is nearing

  504. His own death.

  505. It's the Lord's Supper.

  506. They're going to share

  507. in this meal together.

  508. And the people

  509. who are with Him

  510. in that meal

  511. are people

  512. who will betray Him.

  513. People who will deny Him.

  514. People who are going

  515. to mess up.

  516. People who have been

  517. invited into this

  518. relationship,

  519. this covenant relationship

  520. with Him.

  521. And listen to these words

  522. as Jesus speaks

  523. to these failing disciples.

  524. People like you and me.

  525. Verse 26.

  526. While they were eating,

  527. Jesus took bread.

  528. Picture it.

  529. Okay?

  530. This is something visual.

  531. He took bread.

  532. He gave thanks.

  533. And He broke it.

  534. And He gave it

  535. to His disciples saying,

  536. take and eat.

  537. This is my body.

  538. And then He took the cup.

  539. And He gave thanks

  540. and He offered it to them

  541. saying,

  542. drink from it,

  543. all of you.

  544. This is my blood

  545. of the new covenant

  546. which is poured out

  547. for the many

  548. for the forgiveness

  549. of sins.

  550. You see,

  551. Jesus is talking about

  552. His own death to come.

  553. So Jesus is saying

  554. to us in these words,

  555. may it be done

  556. to me

  557. if I break

  558. the covenant

  559. or if you break

  560. the covenant.

  561. Remember Abraham's vision

  562. back in Genesis 15.

  563. Just as God

  564. had promised

  565. in that vision

  566. to walk through

  567. the bloody mess alone,

  568. so Jesus comes,

  569. the God-man,

  570. and He says,

  571. I will walk

  572. to the cross alone.

  573. His body

  574. would be torn

  575. in two.

  576. His blood

  577. would be poured

  578. out on the cross.

  579. And as Jesus

  580. hangs and suffers,

  581. He is saying,

  582. I will take the blame

  583. when you fail

  584. to keep the covenant.

  585. I will be cut up

  586. for you.

  587. I will be the

  588. substitute for you.

  589. I will take the blame

  590. for you

  591. when you disobey.

  592. And so no longer

  593. do we have to run

  594. and hide

  595. like Adam did

  596. back in the garden.

  597. No longer

  598. do we have to try

  599. and cover up

  600. with our own performance,

  601. our own mess.

  602. Instead,

  603. we now run

  604. to Jesus

  605. in faith

  606. where we discover

  607. the true blessing

  608. of God,

  609. that new covenant

  610. where He gives us

  611. a new heart

  612. to be able

  613. to live God's way,

  614. where we receive

  615. the forgiveness

  616. of all of our sins.

  617. And just as Adam

  618. and Eve

  619. walked in complete

  620. openness with God,

  621. so we

  622. can now

  623. enjoy life

  624. with Him.

  625. And just like

  626. God intervened

  627. into the life

  628. of Abraham,

  629. so God

  630. by His grace

  631. has intervened

  632. in our lives.

  633. and in response,

  634. Abraham left

  635. his old life

  636. behind.

  637. He turned

  638. his back

  639. on his old way.

  640. In repentance,

  641. he turned away

  642. from his life

  643. of sin.

  644. He didn't go

  645. back there.

  646. Instead,

  647. he stepped out

  648. in faith.

  649. And so the invitation

  650. for us

  651. is to turn

  652. our back

  653. once and for all

  654. and step out

  655. with Christ

  656. on a new journey.

  657. a life

  658. where we can

  659. enjoy the source

  660. of all love

  661. and life.

  662. A God

  663. who responds

  664. in grace

  665. and mercy

  666. and compassion.

  667. A God

  668. who promised

  669. us from the

  670. very beginning

  671. you will receive

  672. blessing

  673. and not curse.

  674. What

  675. amazing

  676. grace.

  677. Let's pray

  678. together.
