  1. If you could turn in your Bibles to Joshua. I haven't got a page number.

  2. I always encourage people to have a Bible.

  3. And today we, I don't want to say especially need a Bible, we always need a Bible,

  4. but we're going to be looking at a lot today.

  5. We're going to be covering a thousand years, at least, and about six books.

  6. So that's why you need a Bible to be able to follow along as we look at God's big story.

  7. So a thousand years in 30 minutes, thereabouts.

  8. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  9. As we look at his word together.

  10. Our Father God, we thank you for your word, the Bible.

  11. We thank you for the way in which it has been preserved over many hundreds and thousands of years for us today.

  12. Your word written down in our language.

  13. So that we today can hear the voice of God speaking to us.

  14. Father, we ask for the help of your Holy Spirit that we may understand better the big story of God.

  15. And what it teaches us about you.

  16. And what it says to us about us.

  17. And that we would be people who are shaped by this story.

  18. And who learn what it is to live as your subjects.

  19. People who follow the King of Kings.

  20. We ask for your help this morning in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. Well, to us, it's just another death notice that you would read in the local newspaper.

  23. But for the people of Israel, it was absolutely devastating.

  24. Look at Joshua chapter 1, verse 1.

    Joshua 1:1

  25. See what it says?

  26. After the death of Moses.

  27. Now we only need to read his obituary to see what a loss Moses was to the people.

  28. Just look back one page to the very end of Deuteronomy, the book before.

  29. Deuteronomy 34, verse 10.

    Deuteronomy 34:10

  30. Here's what appeared in the Israelite daily news the day Moses died, if you like.

  31. Verse 10.

  32. Since then no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,

  33. who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt,

  34. to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land.

  35. For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

  36. So this great leader who had led the people for over 40 years,

  37. bringing them out of slavery from Egypt into a new place,

  38. their leader Moses is now dead.

  39. So what are God's people going to do?

  40. Who's going to lead them now?

  41. Who's going to be the one to speak God's word to them?

  42. Who's going to step in when they fail and fall?

  43. Well, Moses may die,

  44. but God in his love continues to rule over his people through the person he has chosen.

  45. So let's read Joshua chapter 1, verses 1 to 3.

    Joshua 1:1–3

  46. It's like a new big section in the story.

  47. Moses has died.

  48. Enter Joshua.

  49. Verse 1.

  50. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord,

  51. the Lord said to Joshua, son of Nun,

  52. Moses' assistant,

  53. Moses, my servant, is dead.

  54. Now then, you and all these people get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give them to the Israelites.

  55. I will give you every place where you set your foot as I promised Moses.

  56. So leaders may die,

  57. but God in his love continues to provide his people.

  58. And look what happens when God's leaders and his rule is followed.

  59. If you go to the very end of Joshua, chapter 23, verse 14.

    Joshua 23:14

  60. The very end of the book.

  61. So Moses has died.

  62. Joshua has raised up.

  63. And God's promises continue.

  64. So look what it says, chapter 23, verse 14.

  65. Now I am about to go to the way of all the earth.

  66. In other words, I am about to die.

  67. You know with all your heart and soul

  68. that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed.

  69. Every promise has been fulfilled.

  70. Not one has failed.

  71. You see, when God's rule is in place,

  72. when his chosen leader is in place,

  73. there is great blessing.

  74. God's rule is always best and always right for his people.

  75. But, when his rule is absent or ignored,

  76. it is disastrous.

  77. Have a look in the next book, Judges, chapter 2, verse 8.

    Judges 2:8

  78. Joshua, or Judges, chapter 2, verse 8.

    Judges 2:8

  79. Joshua, son of Nun, the servant of the Lord,

  80. but he died at the age of 110.

  81. So, another leader has died,

  82. and we're asking the same question again.

  83. Now what are the people going to do?

  84. Well, look down at verse 10.

  85. After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers,

  86. another generation grew up,

  87. who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.

  88. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord

  89. and served the Baals.

  90. They forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers,

  91. who had brought them out of Egypt.

  92. They followed and worshipped various gods of the peoples around them.

  93. They provoked the Lord to anger,

  94. because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.

  95. In his anger against Israel,

  96. the Lord handed them over to raiders who plundered them.

  97. He sold them to their enemies all around,

  98. whom they were no longer able to resist.

  99. Whenever Israel went out to fight,

  100. the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them,

  101. just as he had sworn to them.

  102. They were in great distress.

  103. Do you see what happens when God's loving rule is ignored and rejected?

  104. When there's no leader in place,

  105. it's just chaos and disorder.

  106. But as we know with the story that we've been looking at so far,

  107. God always continues to provide for his people.

  108. And he continues to restore when things have been broken.

  109. So look down at verse 16 of chapter 2.

  110. Then the Lord raised up judges.

  111. So here come new leaders,

  112. new people,

  113. who saved them out of the hands of the raiders.

  114. Verse 18.

  115. Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them,

  116. he was with the judge,

  117. and he saved them out of the hands of their enemies

  118. as long as the judge lived.

  119. For the Lord had compassion on them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them.

  120. But when the judge died,

  121. the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers,

  122. following other gods and serving and worshipping them.

  123. They refused to give up their evil practices and their stubborn ways.

  124. You see,

  125. without a leader,

  126. without the rule of God,

  127. the people rebel.

  128. In fact,

  129. the book of Judges ends in absolute anarchy.

  130. Have a look at chapter 21,

  131. verse 25,

  132. right at the very end of the book of Judges.

    Judges 21:25

  133. Chapter 21,

  134. verse 25.

  135. When God's loving rule is rejected,

  136. it just brings chaos and disorder,

  137. and it ends in absolute anarchy.

  138. Chapter 21,

  139. verse 25.

  140. In those days,

  141. Israel had no king.

  142. Everyone did as he saw fit.

  143. It's a terrible end

  144. to what has been going on.

  145. Now,

  146. I know some people are studying for their leaving cert.

  147. When I did my leaving cert a few years ago,

  148. on the English syllabus was William Golding's Lord of the Flies.

  149. I don't know if any of you have ever read it.

  150. It's a fictional story

  151. about a group of well-educated English schoolboys

  152. who get marooned on an island,

  153. on this desert island,

  154. a tropical island.

  155. They're without adult supervision.

  156. There's no leadership.

  157. And very quickly,

  158. disorder and chaos begin to reign.

  159. The children,

  160. who are all young teenagers,

  161. all begin to bully each other.

  162. They start fighting with each other,

  163. and they form rival groups.

  164. One of the children

  165. stands out amongst all the rest.

  166. He's given a nickname,

  167. Piggy.

  168. And he kept insisting to everybody else,

  169. we need rules.

  170. And here's what he says.

  171. We've got to have rules and obey them.

  172. After all,

  173. we're not savages.

  174. Which is better,

  175. to have rules and agree,

  176. or go hunting and smashing and breaking things up?

  177. Well,

  178. he got his answer.

  179. Not long after his desire for rules,

  180. Piggy is violently killed by the other children.

  181. You see,

  182. it's a social comment of what happens

  183. when you remove authority from society.

  184. Anarchy.

  185. All hell breaks loose.

  186. And this is what we see around us

  187. every single day.

  188. Everyone,

  189. just as it was at the end of Judges,

  190. everyone does as they see fit.

  191. The only rules are,

  192. there are no rules.

  193. Whether it's the gang lords in Dublin streets,

  194. or our breaking of the speed limit.

  195. Whether it's people's desire to change the Eighth Amendment,

  196. or refusing to pay our water tax.

  197. We don't want to be told what to do.

  198. We want to live as we please.

  199. And all of this is a reflection

  200. of a much deeper and more serious issue.

  201. It's a rejection of God's loving rule.

  202. You see,

  203. life for the nation of Israel

  204. has spiraled into complete disorder.

  205. From the time of Moses,

  206. as they'd come out into the promised land,

  207. or towards it,

  208. things were going well.

  209. But as soon as they start rejecting leadership,

  210. as they start pushing God out the way,

  211. everything descends into chaos.

  212. So they turn

  213. to one of the last remaining priests,

  214. whose name is Samuel.

  215. Have a look at 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  216. chapter 8.

  217. So it's a few pages on from Joshua.

  218. You go from Joshua to Ruth,

  219. and then into 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  220. chapter 8.

  221. 1 Samuel, chapter 8,

    1 Samuel 8:4

  222. verse 4.

  223. So all the elders of Israel gathered together,

  224. and they came to Samuel at Ramah.

  225. They said to him,

  226. Samuel, you're old,

  227. and your sons do not walk in your ways.

  228. Now appoint a king to lead us,

  229. such as all the other nations have.

  230. Now it seems very honourable,

  231. doesn't it?

  232. Give us a king.

  233. Maybe they want to get their act together

  234. and start living in a right way.

  235. Well, let's read on.

  236. Verse 6.

  237. But when they said,

  238. give us a king to lead us,

  239. this displeased Samuel.

  240. So he prayed to the Lord,

  241. and the Lord told him,

  242. listen to all that the people are saying to you.

  243. It is not you they have rejected,

  244. but they have rejected me as their king.

  245. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day,

  246. forsaking me and serving other gods,

  247. so they are doing to you.

  248. You see, the request appears to be good.

  249. But deep down,

  250. it's just another attempt to get rid of God's rule and authority.

  251. Do you see what the people are asking for?

  252. Look back at the end of verse 5.

  253. They say,

  254. we want a king to lead us,

  255. such as all the other nations have.

  256. You see,

  257. we don't want to be God's people anymore.

  258. We want to be like all the other nations.

  259. We want to have a king of our choice.

  260. A king who will do what we tell him to do.

  261. We want to do things our way.

  262. Verse 9.

  263. God responds to them.

  264. Now listen to them.

  265. But warn them solemnly,

  266. and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do.

  267. It will be brutal

  268. if they get the king of their choice.

  269. It will be like them going back into Egypt all over again.

  270. We're told what the king would be like.

  271. Verse 17.

  272. Talking about taxes.

  273. He will take a tenth of your flocks,

  274. and yourselves will become his slaves.

  275. When that day comes,

  276. you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen,

  277. and the Lord will not answer you in that day.

  278. But the people refused to listen to Samuel.

  279. No, they said.

  280. We want a king over us.

  281. Then we should be like all the other nations,

  282. with a king to lead us and go out before us

  283. and fight our battles.

  284. Their persistence to get rid of God

  285. is frighteningly similar to today.

  286. Why is it that nations around the world,

  287. nations like North Korea,

  288. Iraq, or Eritrea,

  289. if you read the magazine I referred to earlier,

  290. why have they made it illegal

  291. to worship and to meet as we are right now?

  292. Why is our media open to every kind of worldview,

  293. but silences a biblical view?

  294. Why do our universities and colleges

  295. champion tolerance,

  296. but encourage intolerance towards Christians?

  297. Well, I don't think it's any difference

  298. to what is going on in chapter 8 here,

  299. because we want to be like everyone else.

  300. We don't want God as king.

  301. We want to live as we want

  302. and do as we please

  303. and make rules that we like

  304. and live as ever we want.

  305. Look at verse 21.

  306. When Samuel heard all that the people said,

  307. he repeated it before the Lord.

  308. And the Lord answered,

  309. listen to them

  310. and give them a king.

  311. You see, sometimes God in his judgment

  312. gives us what we keep asking for.

  313. You want a king?

  314. You want to live life without me?

  315. Well, here's your king.

  316. And you can live under your own rules.

  317. And it brought further chaos

  318. and disorder and destruction.

  319. You see, if we persist long enough

  320. in wanting to live life our own way,

  321. we get what we deserve.

  322. And I think as we look across

  323. even our own nation,

  324. across the nations of the world,

  325. why are there in so much turmoil?

  326. Why are nations fighting against others?

  327. Why is there terrorism?

  328. Why is there brokenness?

  329. Because God gives us what we ask for.

  330. A world where there is no king.

  331. Rather a king of our own choice.

  332. A king that we want.

  333. Well, as the story goes on,

  334. they get the king as God had promised.

  335. It was King Saul.

  336. He was a brutal king

  337. who treated them harshly.

  338. But even though

  339. God has been rejected by the people,

  340. God's authority over the people remains.

  341. So look what God has to say about it

  342. in chapter 13, verse 13.

  343. 1 Samuel chapter 13.

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  344. So God is speaking to Saul

  345. through Samuel.

  346. Saul is the one who's the king.

  347. But he has something to say to him.

  348. Verse 13.

  349. You acted foolishly,

  350. Samuel said.

  351. You have not kept the command

  352. the Lord your God gave you.

  353. If you had,

  354. he would have established

  355. your kingdom over Israel

  356. for all time.

  357. But now your kingdom

  358. will not endure.

  359. The Lord has sought out a man

  360. after his own heart

  361. and appointed him leader of his people

  362. because you have not kept

  363. the Lord's command.

  364. Do you see this ongoing theme

  365. that we've come across

  366. time after time?

  367. God loves his people.

  368. He's jealous for his people.

  369. He will not give up on the world

  370. that he has created.

  371. So God promises.

  372. He says,

  373. I'm going to step in once again

  374. and I'm going to provide for you

  375. a king of my choice.

  376. A king who has a heart like God.

  377. A king who's going to restore order.

  378. A king who's going to bring blessing.

  379. And that's what we find

  380. that happens.

  381. God installs his own king.

  382. Have a look at 1 Samuel chapter 16

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  383. and verse 1.

  384. The Lord said to Samuel,

  385. How long will you mourn for Saul

  386. since I have rejected him

  387. as king over Israel?

  388. Fill your horn with oil

  389. and be on your way.

  390. I'm sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem.

  391. I have chosen one of his sons

  392. to be king.

  393. So Jesse, the father,

  394. goes and gets all his sons together

  395. except for one,

  396. if you remember the story,

  397. and brings them before Samuel.

  398. Look at verse 7.

  399. But the Lord said to Samuel,

  400. Do not consider his appearance

  401. or his height,

  402. for I have rejected him.

  403. The Lord does not look at the things

  404. man looks at.

  405. Man looks at the outward appearance.

  406. But the Lord looks at the heart.

  407. And so all these brothers,

  408. strong and as rugged

  409. and as brilliant as they are,

  410. they're all rejected.

  411. And one is chosen.

  412. David.

  413. Verse 13.

  414. So Samuel took the horn of oil

  415. and anointed him,

  416. that's David,

  417. in the presence of his brothers.

  418. And from that day on,

  419. the Spirit of the Lord

  420. came upon David in power.

  421. Samuel then went to Ramah.

  422. You see,

  423. this is how God works.

  424. He provides the king

  425. of his choice.

  426. He had called Moses.

  427. He had called Joshua.

  428. He had raised up judges

  429. to rescue and deliver.

  430. And now he brings his own king,

  431. David,

  432. and puts him in place.

  433. And when David became king,

  434. well, life under King David

  435. was great.

  436. It was a time of peace

  437. and prosperity.

  438. The people were living

  439. under God's loving rule.

  440. They had rest

  441. from all their enemies.

  442. Things were the way

  443. they were meant to be.

  444. It was almost as if

  445. they were back

  446. in the Garden of Eden

  447. all over again.

  448. Living under God's rule.

  449. In relationship with God.

  450. Enjoying rest

  451. and prosperity.

  452. But what God was going

  453. to do through David

  454. was only a taste

  455. of something greater to come.

  456. For God would make a promise

  457. to David.

  458. Go on to 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  459. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  460. And here God makes

  461. this amazing promise

  462. to King David.

  463. We'll pick it up

  464. in verse 11.

  465. Halfway through verse 11.

  466. The Lord declares to you

  467. that the Lord himself

  468. will establish a house for you.

  469. Not a physical building

  470. made of bricks

  471. and mortar and wood

  472. but a dynasty.

  473. A family.

  474. The Lord himself

  475. will establish a house for you.

  476. When your days are over

  477. and you rest with your fathers

  478. I will raise up

  479. your offspring

  480. to succeed you.

  481. He will come

  482. from your own body

  483. and I will establish

  484. his kingdom.

  485. He is the one

  486. who will build a house

  487. for my name

  488. and I will establish

  489. the throne of his kingdom

  490. forever.

  491. I will be his father

  492. and he shall be my son.

  493. When he does wrong

  494. I will punish him

  495. with the rod of men

  496. with floggings

  497. inflicted by men.

  498. But my love

  499. will never be taken

  500. away from him

  501. as I took it away

  502. from Saul

  503. whom I removed

  504. from before you.

  505. Your house

  506. and your kingdom

  507. shall endure

  508. forever before me.

  509. Your throne

  510. shall be established

  511. forever.

  512. You see

  513. it's the promise

  514. of another king

  515. to come.

  516. But this king

  517. is going to be

  518. different

  519. to every other

  520. kind of king

  521. that there's been.

  522. First

  523. he's going to be

  524. a king

  525. like God.

  526. He's going to be

  527. a king

  528. like God.

  529. Look back at

  530. verse 14.

  531. He says,

  532. I will be his father

  533. and he shall be

  534. my son.

  535. Now years ago

  536. going back a long

  537. long way

  538. sons usually did

  539. what their fathers did.

  540. So if your father

  541. happened to be

  542. a blacksmith

  543. well there was a good

  544. chance that your son

  545. would become a blacksmith

  546. or if he was a baker

  547. he would become

  548. a baker.

  549. sons did

  550. what their fathers

  551. did.

  552. And that's the idea

  553. that we have

  554. in verse 14.

  555. The son

  556. is going to do

  557. what the father

  558. does.

  559. In other words

  560. God is saying

  561. a king is going

  562. to come

  563. who will be

  564. just like

  565. me.

  566. Just as God

  567. rules over his

  568. people

  569. so this

  570. son who

  571. comes

  572. will rule

  573. just like

  574. God.

  575. He will act

  576. justly and

  577. fairly.

  578. He will be a

  579. king with

  580. absolute power

  581. and supreme

  582. authority.

  583. So this promise

  584. is going to be

  585. a king like

  586. God.

  587. Second

  588. this is a

  589. king

  590. who will

  591. endure

  592. forever.

  593. Look at

  594. verse 16.

  595. He says

  596. to David

  597. your house

  598. your kingdom

  599. shall endure

  600. forever before

  601. me.

  602. Your throne

  603. shall be

  604. established

  605. forever.

  606. Now if we

  607. know anything

  608. about this

  609. we read this

  610. and we go

  611. David that his

  612. kingdom is going

  613. to reign

  614. forever and

  615. ever.

  616. Well we only

  617. need to read

  618. on a little

  619. bit longer

  620. and we

  621. realize that

  622. David dies.

  623. So how can

  624. this go on

  625. forever and

  626. ever?

  627. Well the only

  628. way it can go

  629. on forever and

  630. ever

  631. is for a

  632. king who

  633. would come

  634. who would

  635. live forever

  636. and ever.

  637. A king

  638. without end.

  639. A king

  640. who is

  641. eternal

  642. and whose

  643. rule never

  644. comes to

  645. an end.

  646. And for

  647. us reading

  648. it it seems

  649. impossible that

  650. that could

  651. happen.

  652. But on the

  653. basis of

  654. everything that

  655. God has

  656. promised and

  657. fulfilled so

  658. far in the

  659. story we

  660. would be silly

  661. to discount

  662. it.

  663. So there's

  664. going to come

  665. a king like

  666. God.

  667. A king who

  668. will rule

  669. forever.

  670. And a

  671. king who's

  672. going to

  673. bring blessing.

  674. If you

  675. flick on to

  676. verse 28

  677. look at how

  678. David responds

  679. to what God

  680. promises.

  681. In verse 28

  682. David says

  683. this,

  684. O sovereign

  685. Lord you

  686. are God.

  687. Your words

  688. are trustworthy

  689. and you

  690. have promised

  691. these things

  692. these good

  693. things to

  694. your servant.

  695. Now be

  696. pleased to

  697. bless the

  698. house of

  699. your servant

  700. that it

  701. may continue

  702. forever in

  703. your sight.

  704. For you

  705. O sovereign

  706. Lord have

  707. spoken and

  708. with your

  709. blessing the

  710. house of

  711. your servant

  712. will be

  713. blessed

  714. forever.

  715. forever.

  716. So this

  717. king like

  718. God who's

  719. going to

  720. rule forever

  721. is going to

  722. bring eternal

  723. blessing.

  724. So instead of

  725. the curse of

  726. death there's

  727. going to be

  728. the blessing

  729. of life.

  730. Instead of

  731. disorder and

  732. chaos there's

  733. going to be

  734. beauty and

  735. harmony.

  736. Everything is

  737. going to be

  738. put right again

  739. when this

  740. king comes.

  741. But there's

  742. something else

  743. about this

  744. king that

  745. strikes us as

  746. very very

  747. disturbing.

  748. You might

  749. have picked

  750. it up if

  751. you go back

  752. to verse

  753. 14.

  754. Read carefully

  755. what verse

  756. 14 says.

  757. I will be

  758. his father

  759. and he

  760. shall be

  761. my son.

  762. When he

  763. does wrong

  764. I will

  765. punish him

  766. with the

  767. rod of

  768. men

  769. with floggings

  770. inflicted

  771. by men.

  772. the father

  773. will punish

  774. his son

  775. who is

  776. a king.

  777. Now it

  778. seems completely

  779. out of place

  780. doesn't it?

  781. How could a

  782. king like

  783. God who

  784. rules forever

  785. and brings

  786. eternal blessing

  787. be punished?

  788. Why would

  789. the father

  790. do that?

  791. And what

  792. would the son

  793. do that was

  794. so wrong

  795. that he

  796. deserves

  797. punishment?

  798. Well as

  799. we follow

  800. through the

  801. story in

  802. search of

  803. this promise

  804. God does

  805. raise up

  806. new kings

  807. to take

  808. the place

  809. of David

  810. and all

  811. seems to

  812. be going

  813. well.

  814. The kingdom

  815. gets bigger

  816. and stronger.

  817. The blessings

  818. keep coming.

  819. Everything is

  820. right and

  821. good but

  822. within two

  823. generations

  824. everything is

  825. once again

  826. falling apart.

  827. The great

  828. big kingdom

  829. gets divided

  830. in two

  831. as the

  832. families begin

  833. to fight

  834. against each

  835. other.

  836. We have

  837. Israel to

  838. the north

  839. and Judah

  840. to the south

  841. and each

  842. kingdom

  843. have their

  844. own kings

  845. but the

  846. vast majority

  847. of these

  848. kings turn

  849. against God

  850. and they

  851. reject his

  852. loving rule

  853. and instead

  854. of leading

  855. the people

  856. back to God

  857. they lead

  858. them into

  859. further rebellion

  860. and God

  861. is watching

  862. out throughout

  863. these years

  864. and he

  865. continues to

  866. intervene.

  867. He raises

  868. up good

  869. kings to

  870. restore order

  871. but he

  872. keeps repeating

  873. this warning

  874. to them.

  875. He says

  876. if you

  877. persist

  878. I will

  879. bring my

  880. judgment.

  881. If you

  882. keep turning

  883. against me

  884. my judgment

  885. will come.

  886. And over

  887. a period

  888. of 400

  889. years

  890. of God

  891. patiently

  892. waiting for

  893. the people

  894. to turn

  895. from their

  896. ways

  897. God

  898. eventually

  899. brings

  900. his

  901. judgment.

  902. Israel

  903. as the

  904. northern

  905. kingdom

  906. is

  907. completely

  908. destroyed

  909. by

  910. Assyria

  911. and 150

  912. years later

  913. Judah

  914. is taken

  915. over by

  916. the Babylonian

  917. kingdom

  918. and they

  919. end up

  920. in exile.

  921. It's like

  922. God's people

  923. are slaves

  924. back in

  925. Egypt

  926. all over

  927. again.

  928. They've gone

  929. full cycle

  930. having been

  931. kicked out

  932. of the

  933. Garden

  934. of Eden

  935. where they

  936. ended up

  937. in Egypt

  938. and now

  939. they're back

  940. in as

  941. slaves again

  942. under a

  943. foreign

  944. strange

  945. ruler.

  946. God

  947. may reject

  948. the kings

  949. and God

  950. may bring

  951. his judgment

  952. on his

  953. people

  954. but God

  955. does not

  956. forget the

  957. promises

  958. he has

  959. made.

  960. You see

  961. as people

  962. persist

  963. in rejecting

  964. his loving

  965. rule

  966. so God

  967. persists

  968. in rescuing

  969. rebellious

  970. people

  971. and bringing

  972. about the

  973. king

  974. and the

  975. kingdom

  976. that he

  977. has promised.

  978. So just

  979. as God

  980. had promised

  981. David

  982. that he

  983. would raise

  984. up a king

  985. who would

  986. reign forever

  987. that king

  988. arrives.

  989. Have a look

  990. at Luke's

  991. gospel

  992. chapter 1

  993. in the

  994. New Testament.

  995. Luke

    Luke 1:31

  996. chapter 1

  997. verse 31.

  998. So from

  999. the time

  1000. of God's

  1001. people going

  1002. into exile

  1003. into

  1004. Babylon

  1005. there was

  1006. never a

  1007. king who

  1008. came again.

  1009. They are

  1010. kingless

  1011. without a

  1012. leader

  1013. without a

  1014. ruler to

  1015. take care

  1016. of the

  1017. nation

  1018. and so

  1019. the people

  1020. have been

  1021. waiting for

  1022. God's

  1023. promise

  1024. to be

  1025. fulfilled

  1026. and in

  1027. Luke

    Luke 1:31

  1028. chapter 1

  1029. verse 31

  1030. or verse

  1031. 30 we

  1032. read these

  1033. words.

  1034. The angel

  1035. said to her

  1036. do not

  1037. be afraid

  1038. Mary

  1039. you have

  1040. found

  1041. favour

  1042. that is

  1043. grace

  1044. has come

  1045. upon you

  1046. and you

  1047. will be

  1048. with child

  1049. and give

  1050. birth to a

  1051. son and

  1052. you are to

  1053. give him

  1054. the name

  1055. Jesus.

  1056. But look

  1057. how different

  1058. this child

  1059. will be.

  1060. He will

  1061. be great

  1062. and will

  1063. be called

  1064. the son

  1065. of the

  1066. most high.

  1067. This is

  1068. God's

  1069. son.

  1070. And the

  1071. Lord God

  1072. will give

  1073. him the

  1074. throne of

  1075. his father

  1076. David and

  1077. he will

  1078. reign over

  1079. the house

  1080. of Jacob

  1081. forever.

  1082. His

  1083. kingdom

  1084. will never

  1085. end.

  1086. God

  1087. so a

  1088. king like

  1089. God

  1090. comes

  1091. an

  1092. eternal

  1093. king

  1094. a

  1095. king

  1096. who

  1097. brings

  1098. blessing

  1099. as he

  1100. offers

  1101. forgiveness

  1102. to people

  1103. and

  1104. restoration

  1105. of their

  1106. lives

  1107. as they

  1108. repent

  1109. of their

  1110. sins

  1111. a

  1112. king

  1113. who

  1114. brings

  1115. peace

  1116. and

  1117. brings

  1118. order

  1119. out of

  1120. the

  1121. disorder

  1122. as he

  1123. calms

  1124. the rough

  1125. seas

  1126. as he

  1127. provides

  1128. for those

  1129. who have

  1130. nothing

  1131. as he

  1132. heals

  1133. the sick

  1134. and he

  1135. raises

  1136. the dead

  1137. he brings

  1138. about

  1139. the

  1140. kingdom

  1141. that

  1142. people

  1143. have

  1144. been

  1145. searching

  1146. for

  1147. and

  1148. looking

  1149. for

  1150. and

  1151. everything

  1152. is

  1153. beginning

  1154. to be

  1155. put

  1156. right

  1157. you see

  1158. Jesus

  1159. Christ

  1160. is

  1161. God's

  1162. chosen

  1163. king

  1164. not

  1165. just

  1166. for

  1167. Israel

  1168. but

  1169. for

  1170. the

  1171. nations

  1172. for

  1173. the

  1174. world

  1175. and

  1176. as

  1177. he

  1178. comes

  1179. with

  1180. all

  1181. power

  1182. and

  1183. all

  1184. authority

  1185. he

  1186. demands

  1187. that

  1188. people

  1189. listen

  1190. to

  1191. him

  1192. that

  1193. people

  1194. obey

  1195. him

  1196. that

  1197. people

  1198. follow

  1199. him

  1200. and

  1201. submit

  1202. to

  1203. his

  1204. authority

  1205. he

  1206. can

  1207. claim

  1208. and

  1209. say

  1210. listen

  1211. to

  1212. me

  1213. and

  1214. follow

  1215. me

  1216. but

  1217. just

  1218. as

  1219. Israel

  1220. rejected

  1221. God's

  1222. loving

  1223. rule

  1224. so

  1225. we

  1226. along

  1227. with

  1228. everybody

  1229. else

  1230. have

  1231. rejected

  1232. God's

  1233. loving

  1234. son

  1235. like

  1236. the

  1237. crowds

  1238. at the

  1239. cross

  1240. where

  1241. Jesus

  1242. hung

  1243. we

  1244. have

  1245. we

  1246. have

  1247. we

  1248. have

  1249. we

  1250. have

  1251. we

  1252. have

  1253. we

  1254. have

  1255. joined

  1256. in

  1257. the

  1258. cry

  1259. crucify

  1260. him

  1261. crucify

  1262. him

  1263. we

  1264. have

  1265. made

  1266. a

  1267. mockery

  1268. of

  1269. him

  1270. and

  1271. we

  1272. put

  1273. a

  1274. crown

  1275. of

  1276. thorns

  1277. on

  1278. his

  1279. head

  1280. and

  1281. go

  1282. some

  1283. king

  1284. you

  1285. are

  1286. why

  1287. because

  1288. we

  1289. want

  1290. to

  1291. live

  1292. as

  1293. we

  1294. please

  1295. because

  1296. we

  1297. don't

  1298. want

  1299. anyone

  1300. telling

  1301. us

  1302. how

  1303. to

  1304. live

  1305. look

  1306. at the

  1307. final

  1308. scene

  1309. of

  1310. Jesus

  1311. death

  1312. on

  1313. the

  1314. cross

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  1319. chapter

  1320. 23

  1321. God's

  1322. king

  1323. has

  1324. come

  1325. God's

  1326. loving

  1327. king

  1328. who

  1329. had

  1330. done

  1331. all

  1332. that

  1333. God

  1334. would

  1335. promise

  1336. reaching

  1337. out

  1338. to

  1339. the

  1340. broken

  1341. healing

  1342. restoring

  1343. forgiving

  1344. renewing

  1345. but

  1346. yet

  1347. he

  1348. hangs

  1349. on

  1350. a

  1351. cross

  1352. verse

  1353. 35

  1354. of

  1355. chapter

  1356. 23

  1357. the

  1358. people

  1359. stood

  1360. watching

  1361. and

  1362. the

  1363. rulers

  1364. even

  1365. sneered

  1366. at

  1367. him

  1368. they

  1369. said

  1370. he

  1371. saved

  1372. others

  1373. let

  1374. him

  1375. save

  1376. himself

  1377. as

  1378. he

  1379. is

  1380. Christ

  1381. of

  1382. God

  1383. the

  1384. chosen

  1385. one

  1386. verse

  1387. 39

  1388. one

  1389. of

  1390. the

  1391. criminals

  1392. who

  1393. hung

  1394. there

  1395. hurled

  1396. their

  1397. insults

  1398. at

  1399. him

  1400. aren't

  1401. you

  1402. the

  1403. Christ

  1404. well

  1405. then

  1406. save

  1407. yourself

  1408. and

  1409. us

  1410. but

  1411. the

  1412. other

  1413. criminal

  1414. rebuked

  1415. him

  1416. don't

  1417. you

  1418. fear

  1419. God

  1420. he

  1421. said

  1422. since

  1423. you

  1424. are

  1425. under

  1426. the

  1427. same

  1428. sentence

  1429. we

  1430. are

  1431. punished

  1432. justly

  1433. for

  1434. we

  1435. are

  1436. getting

  1437. what

  1438. our

  1439. deeds

  1440. deserve

  1441. but

  1442. this

  1443. man

  1444. has

  1445. done

  1446. nothing

  1447. wrong

  1448. remember

  1449. what God

  1450. had promised

  1451. to David

  1452. that the

  1453. father would

  1454. punish

  1455. his son

  1456. with the

  1457. rod of

  1458. men

  1459. with the

  1460. floggings

  1461. inflicted

  1462. by men

  1463. but not

  1464. because he

  1465. had done

  1466. anything

  1467. wrong

  1468. he

  1469. was

  1470. innocent

  1471. but he

  1472. died

  1473. in our

  1474. place

  1475. because

  1476. we

  1477. had

  1478. done

  1479. wrong

  1480. this

  1481. king

  1482. comes

  1483. and

  1484. serves

  1485. you

  1486. and I

  1487. by

  1488. giving

  1489. of his

  1490. life

  1491. for

  1492. us

  1493. the

  1494. loving

  1495. king

  1496. takes

  1497. the

  1498. blame

  1499. for

  1500. our

  1501. rebellion

  1502. and

  1503. our

  1504. rejection

  1505. verse

  1506. 42

  1507. then

  1508. he

  1509. said

  1510. Jesus

  1511. remember

  1512. me

  1513. when

  1514. you

  1515. come

  1516. into

  1517. your

  1518. kingdom

  1519. and

  1520. Jesus

  1521. answered

  1522. him

  1523. I

  1524. tell

  1525. you

  1526. the

  1527. truth

  1528. today

  1529. you

  1530. will

  1531. be

  1532. with

  1533. me

  1534. in

  1535. paradise

  1536. you

  1537. see

  1538. this

  1539. king

  1540. who

  1541. has

  1542. died

  1543. three

  1544. days

  1545. later

  1546. would

  1547. rise

  1548. again

  1549. from

  1550. the

  1551. grave

  1552. defeating

  1553. death

  1554. destroying

  1555. Satan

  1556. reigning

  1557. to live

  1558. forever

  1559. and

  1560. forever

  1561. and he

  1562. rules

  1563. today

  1564. with

  1565. absolute

  1566. power

  1567. and

  1568. supreme

  1569. authority

  1570. seated

  1571. on his

  1572. throne

  1573. above

  1574. all

  1575. else

  1576. and

  1577. one

  1578. day

  1579. this

  1580. king

  1581. is

  1582. going

  1583. to

  1584. come

  1585. again

  1586. king

  1587. Jesus

  1588. will

  1589. burst

  1590. into

  1591. this

  1592. world

  1593. and

  1594. he

  1595. will

  1596. bring

  1597. his

  1598. judgment

  1599. on

  1600. all

  1601. those

  1602. who

  1603. refuse

  1604. him

  1605. and

  1606. that

  1607. separation

  1608. will

  1609. not

  1610. just

  1611. be

  1612. slavery

  1613. in

  1614. a

  1615. country

  1616. but

  1617. it

  1618. will

  1619. be

  1620. slavery

  1621. for

  1622. eternity

  1623. in

  1624. hell

  1625. itself

  1626. but

  1627. if

  1628. we

  1629. turn

  1630. and

  1631. we

  1632. trust

  1633. in

  1634. this

  1635. king

  1636. just

  1637. as

  1638. the

  1639. criminal

  1640. did

  1641. those

  1642. words

  1643. are

  1644. true

  1645. for

  1646. us

  1647. you

  1648. will

  1649. be

  1650. with

  1651. me

  1652. in

  1653. paradise

  1654. forever

  1655. you

  1656. will

  1657. be

  1658. part

  1659. of

  1660. God's

  1661. eternal

  1662. kingdom

  1663. where

  1664. everything

  1665. is put

  1666. right

  1667. where

  1668. there

  1669. is

  1670. no

  1671. more

  1672. death

  1673. no

  1674. more

  1675. suffering

  1676. no

  1677. more

  1678. pain

  1679. the

  1680. home

  1681. of

  1682. blessing

  1683. the

  1684. garden

  1685. of

  1686. Eden

  1687. just

  1688. as

  1689. it's

  1690. meant

  1691. to

  1692. be

  1693. and

  1694. so

  1695. we

  1696. stay

  1697. here

  1698. today

  1699. because

  1700. God

  1701. has

  1702. us

  1703. in

  1704. place

  1705. if

  1706. you

  1707. flick

  1708. over

  1709. to

  1710. Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  1711. chapter

  1712. 24

  1713. he

  1714. tells

  1715. his

  1716. disciples

  1717. in

  1718. verse

  1719. 48

  1720. sorry

  1721. verse

  1722. 46

  1723. Jesus

  1724. said

  1725. to

  1726. his

  1727. disciples

  1728. this

  1729. is

  1730. what

  1731. is

  1732. written

  1733. that

  1734. Christ

  1735. will

  1736. suffer

  1737. and

  1738. rise

  1739. from

  1740. the

  1741. dead

  1742. on

  1743. the

  1744. third

  1745. day

  1746. and

  1747. repentance

  1748. and

  1749. forgiveness

  1750. of

  1751. sins

  1752. will

  1753. be

  1754. preached

  1755. in

  1756. his

  1757. name

  1758. to

  1759. all

  1760. nations

  1761. beginning

  1762. at

  1763. Jerusalem

  1764. and

  1765. you

  1766. are

  1767. witnesses

  1768. of

  1769. these

  1770. things

  1771. and

  1772. I

  1773. am

  1774. going

  1775. to

  1776. send

  1777. you

  1778. what

  1779. my

  1780. father

  1781. has

  1782. promised

  1783. but

  1784. stay

  1785. in

  1786. the

  1787. city

  1788. until

  1789. you

  1790. have

  1791. been

  1792. clothed

  1793. with

  1794. power

  1795. from

  1796. on

  1797. high

  1798. so

  1799. just

  1800. as

  1801. those

  1802. disciples

  1803. were

  1804. sent

  1805. by

  1806. the

  1807. risen

  1808. King

  1809. Jesus

  1810. to

  1811. go

  1812. and

  1813. declare

  1814. the

  1815. message

  1816. of

  1817. the

  1818. King

  1819. so

  1820. we

  1821. are

  1822. here

  1823. today

  1824. as

  1825. the

  1826. subjects

  1827. of

  1828. the

  1829. King

  1830. sent

  1831. with

  1832. that

  1833. same

  1834. message

  1835. into

  1836. our

  1837. community

  1838. to

  1839. our

  1840. nation

  1841. to

  1842. the

  1843. nations

  1844. of

  1845. the

  1846. world

  1847. calling

  1848. on

  1849. people

  1850. to

  1851. repent

  1852. to

  1853. be

  1854. forgiven

  1855. that

  1856. they

  1857. too

  1858. might

  1859. enter

  1860. into

  1861. God's

  1862. eternal

  1863. kingdom

  1864. one

  1865. day

  1866. King

  1867. Jesus

  1868. will

  1869. return

  1870. are

  1871. we

  1872. ready

  1873. to

  1874. meet

  1875. him

  1876. but

  1877. more

  1878. importantly

  1879. maybe

  1880. we

  1881. should

  1882. be

  1883. asking

  1884. are

  1885. we

  1886. ready

  1887. to

  1888. bring

  1889. that

  1890. message

  1891. so

  1892. that

  1893. our

  1894. friends

  1895. our

  1896. family

  1897. our

  1898. community

  1899. is

  1900. ready

  1901. to

  1902. meet

  1903. the

  1904. King

  1905. let's

  1906. pray

  1907. together

  1908. father

  1909. while we

  1910. have

  1911. traveled

  1912. through

  1913. a

  1914. thousand

  1915. years

  1916. and

  1917. more

  1918. of

  1919. history

  1920. through

  1921. it

  1922. all

  1923. and

  1924. even

  1925. now

  1926. you

  1927. remain

  1928. King

  1929. and

  1930. Lord

  1931. over

  1932. all

  1933. you

  1934. are

  1935. in

  1936. charge

  1937. and

  1938. so

  1939. we

  1940. bow

  1941. and

  1942. we

  1943. submit

  1944. before

  1945. you

  1946. today

  1947. we

  1948. thank

  1949. you

  1950. that

  1951. you

  1952. have

  1953. given

  1954. to

  1955. us

  1956. the

  1957. perfect

  1958. King

  1959. the

  1960. one

  1961. who

  1962. has

  1963. died

  1964. in

  1965. our

  1966. place

  1967. risen

  1968. again

  1969. with

  1970. all

  1971. power

  1972. and

  1973. authority

  1974. sending

  1975. us

  1976. as

  1977. subjects

  1978. into

  1979. the

  1980. world

  1981. to

  1982. do

  1983. the

  1984. King's

  1985. work

  1986. of

  1987. reaching

  1988. out

  1989. into

  1990. the

  1991. nations

  1992. we

  1993. pray

  1994. father

  1995. for

  1996. the

  1997. power

  1998. of

  1999. your

  2000. Holy

  2001. Spirit

  2002. that

  2003. we

  2004. might

  2005. have

  2006. courage

  2007. to

  2008. speak

  2009. confidence

  2010. to

  2011. share

  2012. and a

  2013. willingness

  2014. to get

  2015. out of

  2016. our

  2017. comfort

  2018. zone

  2019. and

  2020. declare

  2021. the

  2022. message

  2023. of

  2024. King

  2025. Jesus

  2026. we

  2027. pray

  2028. that

  2029. many

  2030. people

  2031. will

  2032. one

  2033. day

  2034. be

  2035. in

  2036. paradise

  2037. the

  2038. eternal

  2039. kingdom

  2040. because

  2041. we

  2042. shared

  2043. who

  2044. Jesus

  2045. is

  2046. help

  2047. us

  2048. we

  2049. pray

  2050. in

  2051. Jesus

  2052. name

  2053. amen

  2054. we're

  2055. going to

  2056. sing

  2057. together

  2058. a song

  2059. which

  2060. reminds

  2061. us

  2062. of our

  2063. great

  2064. King

  2065. the

  2066. one

  2067. who's

  2068. created

  2069. all

  2070. who

  2071. has

  2072. everything

  2073. in

  2074. his

  2075. hands

  2076. who

  2077. controls

  2078. everything

  2079. behold

  2080. our

  2081. God

  2082. nothing

  2083. can

  2084. compare

  2085. come

  2086. let

  2087. us

  2088. adore

  2089. him

  2090. let's

  2091. stand

  2092. together

  2093. as

  2094. we

  2095. sing
