  1. stories. Before we listen to those stories, we're going to pray.

  2. Our Father God, we thank you so much for the true story of the Bible from the beginning

  3. of time, from eternity past to eternity to come. Your great plan, your plan of salvation

  4. for mankind. And it's our prayer this morning that we would grasp afresh your plan of salvation,

  5. what you have done for us, how it changes us, and how it provides for our deepest and greatest

  6. need. Father, would you please speak to us afresh through your word, we pray in Jesus'

  7. name. Amen.

  8. Well, here's the story. It was just one week before her wedding day. Annie had dreamed of

  9. it ever since she was a little girl, and now it was soon to become a reality. Together

  10. with her fiancé, they had saved up to buy a house. And over the weeks, they had been painting

  11. and decorating, making sure everything was in order so that they could move in after

  12. the wedding. On this particular evening, after being out for dinner, they called by the house

  13. to drop off a couple of gifts a friend had kindly bought them. As they went in, it became obvious

  14. that somebody else that somebody else was in the house. Before they could do anything about

  15. it, the intruder ran past and pushed Annie's fiancé to the floor. He fell awkwardly, banged his

  16. head against the radiator, causing severe trauma. It was later that evening that Annie got the

  17. news from the news from the hospital that her fiancé had sadly died due to his injuries. What would

  18. you want to happen to that intruder? What would you want to happen to that intruder? Jimmy was a hard-working

  19. young lad. He lived at home with his mum and was managing to hold down two jobs to get through

  20. college and to help his mum out. After an evening out, Jimmy was walking home with friends. Passing

  21. by what seemed like an empty house, one of them dared Jimmy to see if he could climb through one of the

  22. open windows, get into the house and let himself out through the front door. Jimmy had just managed

  23. to get through the window when he heard somebody come into the house. For fear of being caught, he made a

  24. run for it and he pushed the man out the way. Later that evening, Jimmy was picked up by the guards

  25. when he learned that the man he had pushed died. He was devastated. What would you want to happen to the

  26. intruder now? It's not easy, is it, to make those kinds of decisions. On one side of the story, it has us

  27. demanding justice. But the other side of the story has us desiring grace. I guess what we want is for

  28. justice to be done and for grace to be given. We want the criminal punished, but we want some compassion

  29. to be shown. But how is that actually possible? How can Jimmy be sentenced to life, which is what he

  30. deserves for the crime he committed, and at the same time have his sentence suspended, which is what Jimmy

  31. himself desires? How can justice and grace sit side by side without giving way to the other?

  32. Well, that's one of the big issues confronting us as we read through the story of the Bible.

  33. You remember how the story began. God created a good and a beautiful world,

  34. God. And central to his creation were people. God provided for them and gave to them everything

  35. that they needed. And in return, we were made to love God, to obey him and to enjoy him.

  36. Everything was good and perfect and beautiful. But instead, we rebelled against God. We rejected him

  37. and ignored him. Instead of listening to God, we decided we want to be God and we want to live

  38. life as we please. And as a result, everything broke. Our relationship to God broke. We became

  39. separated from him. We became separated from each other and with creation. Everything broke down.

  40. And the question that we ask is, well, how would God respond to all of this rebellion?

  41. Would he be angry and judge? Or would God be loving and forgiving? Would God bring his justice,

  42. which is what we deserve? Or would he show grace, which is what we all desire?

  43. Well, have a look at Exodus chapter 34 and see how God introduces himself. It's one of the great

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  44. summaries of how God introduces himself to us. Exodus 34 verse 5.

    Exodus 34:5

  45. This is where Moses has come to meet God. And verse 5 reads, then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there

  46. with him, that's Moses, and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And God passed in front of Moses, proclaiming,

  47. the Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,

  48. maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.

  49. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished. He punishes the children and their children for the sin of their fathers to the third and fourth generation.

  50. Do you see what we have there? A picture of who God is? A God who is both full of justice and full of grace.

  51. He brings punishment, but yet he offers forgiveness. He does not treat us as our sins deserve, but yet he holds the guilty accountable.

  52. He's gracious with us, but yet brings judgment upon us. And this is the tension that we see running through the whole story of the Bible.

  53. Every story and every action of God, we see God responding in justice or in grace.

  54. God cannot ignore our sin. It must be punished.

  55. But yet God longs to forgive our sins so that we do not perish.

  56. So here's the big question before us all this morning.

  57. How can God judge us, which is what we deserve,

  58. but yet show grace,

  59. which is what we all desire?

  60. Well, at the centre of the story and the climax of the whole Bible story

  61. is the cross

  62. where God dies.

  63. Because at the cross,

  64. we see God both punish our sin

  65. and provide for our salvation.

  66. At the cross,

  67. grace and justice flow

  68. to the world.

  69. It's summarised for us so well

  70. in Romans chapters 1 to 3.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  71. So turn in your Bible.

  72. We're going to be looking at Romans 1 to 3,

  73. which is almost like a summary.

  74. The first three chapters are like a summary of the whole story of the Bible,

  75. which climax

  76. in the death of God

  77. on the cross.

  78. So Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  79. chapter 1.

  80. And the first thing we notice in Romans chapter 1 is,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  81. is that we all deserve

  82. judgment.

  83. The justice of God

  84. should flow

  85. on us.

  86. You see, that's the whole story of the Bible, isn't it?

  87. As we've been following along the story,

  88. is that we're all under God's judgment.

  89. Have a look at chapter 1, verse 18.

  90. The wrath of God,

  91. the anger of God,

  92. is being revealed from heaven

  93. against all the godlessness

  94. and wickedness of men

  95. who suppress the truth

  96. by their wickedness.

  97. What a great summary

  98. of the story of the Bible

  99. and the human race.

  100. Chapter 2, verse 5.

  101. Because of your stubbornness

  102. and your unrepentant heart,

  103. you are storing up wrath

  104. against yourself

  105. for the day of God's wrath

  106. when his righteous judgment

  107. will be revealed.

  108. God will give to each person

  109. according to what he has done.

  110. And in case we think

  111. we are somehow different

  112. to anyone else,

  113. have a look at chapter 3, verse 10.

  114. It makes it abundantly clear.

  115. that we are included in this.

  116. Chapter 3, verse 10.

  117. As it is written,

  118. there is no one righteous.

  119. Not even one.

  120. There is no one who understands.

  121. No one who seeks God.

  122. All have turned away.

  123. They have together become worthless.

  124. There is no one who does good.

  125. Not even one.

  126. In fact, we are told in chapter 3, verse 23.

  127. All, for all have sinned

  128. and fall short of the glory of God.

  129. Just as Adam did at the very beginning

  130. in the Garden of Eden,

  131. so we, his ancestors,

  132. have followed on in the same ways.

  133. We're all guilty

  134. and deserving of God's judgment.

  135. That's been the escalating problem

  136. as we've read through the story of the Bible.

  137. But that's not the only story, is it?

  138. God has also promised

  139. to respond in grace

  140. and has demonstrated grace

  141. time and time again

  142. to a rebellious people.

  143. So Romans chapter 1, verse 16.

    Romans 1:16

  144. The Apostle Paul, who's writing,

  145. he says,

  146. I am not ashamed of the Gospel.

  147. The Gospel is the good news,

  148. the declaration of great news from God.

  149. Because it is the power of God

  150. for the salvation of everyone who believes.

  151. First for the Jew,

  152. and then for the Gentiles.

  153. So for all people,

  154. salvation is being offered.

  155. Chapter 2, verse 4.

  156. Or do you show contempt

  157. for the riches of his kindness?

  158. God's tolerance and his patience,

  159. not realizing that God's kindness

  160. leads us towards repentance.

  161. You see, it's telling us

  162. that salvation and forgiveness

  163. is available through our repentance.

  164. repentance.

  165. Even though we are guilty,

  166. we can be forgiven.

  167. And this has been the repeated hope

  168. as we've read through the story

  169. of the Bible.

  170. As the problem escalates,

  171. so the hope also escalates.

  172. So on the one hand,

  173. as it's summarized here in Romans,

  174. God demands justice,

  175. which is bad news for us

  176. because we're all guilty.

  177. But on the other hand,

  178. God offers grace,

  179. which is good news for us

  180. because we all need it.

  181. But if God is fair in his judgment,

  182. how can he forgive us

  183. if we're guilty?

  184. If God is just and righteous

  185. in all that he does,

  186. how could God possibly remove punishment

  187. that we justly deserve?

  188. If God were to forgive us,

  189. it would be like turning a blind eye

  190. to all our wickedness and sin.

  191. God would be seen to be nothing more

  192. than some corrupt judge

  193. who's open to some kind of bribe

  194. or a backhander

  195. and who cares little

  196. for any kind of justice.

  197. It would be like Jimmy in our story

  198. that we read at the very beginning,

  199. walking away without any sentence at all.

  200. And we'd say,

  201. where is the justice in that?

  202. How can you just let somebody go free

  203. for a crime they've committed?

  204. So how can God be both compassionate

  205. and gracious

  206. while at the same time

  207. being righteous and fair?

  208. And this is the big story of the Bible.

  209. How is God going to respond to you and to me?

  210. Is he going to come in justice?

  211. Or is he going to give us grace?

  212. It's a little bit like a tug of war.

  213. God is the anchorman on one side for justice,

  214. pulling this direction.

  215. And God is the anchorman

  216. on the other side of grace,

  217. pulling in the other direction.

  218. One seems to be pulling against the other.

  219. And the human race sits in the middle,

  220. in the balance.

  221. If justice wins,

  222. then what of God's desire to forgive?

  223. And if grace wins,

  224. what of God's promise to be just?

  225. How can God simultaneously

  226. express his justice and grace

  227. to the world?

  228. Well, the answer to this is

  229. the cross of Jesus Christ.

  230. God himself dies on the cross,

  231. both punishing our sin

  232. and providing for our salvation.

  233. It is the solution

  234. to the problem or the dilemma

  235. that we face.

  236. So here's the first big theme

  237. of the cross.

  238. The grace of the cross.

  239. Salvation provided.

  240. Have a look at

  241. Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  242. and verse 23.

  243. Romans 3 verse 23.

    Romans 3:23

  244. See what it says?

  245. For all have sinned,

  246. all that you and I,

  247. regardless of our nationality

  248. or our religion

  249. or wherever we come from,

  250. we have all sinned

  251. and all fall short

  252. of the glory of God.

  253. And are justified freely

  254. by his grace

  255. through the redemption

  256. that came by Christ Jesus.

  257. Now I just want to pick up

  258. on that one word there,

  259. that word redemption

  260. that comes through Christ Jesus.

  261. Redemption in the Bible

  262. is all about freeing someone

  263. from the threat of death

  264. or punishment.

  265. So we saw that

  266. in the story of Israel.

  267. Do you remember

  268. when they were in slavery in Egypt

  269. and the angel of death

  270. was to pass over

  271. and God said,

  272. I will redeem you?

  273. So that redemption

  274. is freeing someone

  275. from the threat of death

  276. or punishment.

  277. And that's what we see

  278. throughout the story

  279. of the Bible.

  280. We see God coming

  281. to redeem people

  282. from the punishment

  283. they deserve.

  284. He's constantly

  285. setting people free.

  286. But his redemption

  287. is always partial.

  288. Because the next time

  289. somebody sins

  290. or the nation sins,

  291. they find themselves

  292. under God's judgment again.

  293. But now as we come

  294. into the climax

  295. of the story,

  296. we're reading that

  297. God has redeemed us

  298. fully and finally

  299. by his grace.

  300. You see,

  301. the threat of God's judgment,

  302. which is just and fair,

  303. hangs over the entire world,

  304. over the human race,

  305. over all history

  306. and all time.

  307. But God has come

  308. in his grace

  309. and he now removes

  310. the deserved judgment

  311. from us.

  312. Redemption means

  313. we are set free.

  314. We are no longer living

  315. under the weight

  316. of God's justice.

  317. As a result,

  318. look at verse 24,

  319. we are justified

  320. freely

  321. by his grace

  322. through redemption.

  323. We're justified.

  324. Justified

  325. is another word

  326. we need to be clear on.

  327. It means

  328. though we are guilty

  329. before God,

  330. we are declared

  331. by God

  332. to be in the right.

  333. Though we're guilty

  334. before God,

  335. we are declared

  336. by God

  337. to be in the right.

  338. Now there's something

  339. really scandalous

  340. and shocking

  341. about this.

  342. We should be reading

  343. this and going,

  344. what?

  345. You can't be serious.

  346. It doesn't seem right.

  347. It doesn't seem fair.

  348. It's like Jimmy

  349. in our story

  350. being set free

  351. from the sentence

  352. he deserves.

  353. Except in our case,

  354. there is absolutely

  355. nothing within us

  356. that suggests

  357. we deserve

  358. any grace.

  359. We're rebels

  360. who refuse

  361. to change our ways.

  362. but God

  363. in his grace

  364. declares us

  365. to be right

  366. before him.

  367. I was at a funeral

  368. recently

  369. and I was talking

  370. to the guy

  371. outside,

  372. a friend of mine

  373. and he said,

  374. he said,

  375. so what is it?

  376. He said,

  377. what is it

  378. that you believe?

  379. So in the

  380. literally

  381. the few moments

  382. that I had

  383. I said,

  384. it's all about

  385. grace.

  386. And I explained

  387. something along

  388. those lines

  389. that God,

  390. even though we're

  391. guilty before God,

  392. we can be declared

  393. by God

  394. to be in the right.

  395. He says,

  396. you can't be serious.

  397. He says,

  398. that sounds

  399. really great.

  400. Those were his words

  401. because it's like,

  402. it can possibly

  403. be true

  404. but it is true.

  405. guilty people

  406. are put in the right

  407. before God.

  408. We are now

  409. treated

  410. as if we had

  411. obeyed God

  412. perfectly.

  413. We're now

  414. treasured

  415. as his own

  416. child

  417. as if we had

  418. never ever

  419. disobeyed him

  420. in our life.

  421. We are declared

  422. by God

  423. to be

  424. not

  425. guilty.

  426. No longer

  427. waiting

  428. a sentence

  429. or punishment.

  430. We are set

  431. free to live

  432. with God

  433. without shame

  434. or fear,

  435. standing before

  436. him,

  437. knowing that we

  438. are loved by him

  439. and cared for him.

  440. It's true.

  441. But how can God

  442. do this?

  443. What about

  444. his justice?

  445. Treating somebody

  446. who is guilty

  447. as an innocent

  448. person

  449. is very unfair

  450. and very unjust.

  451. How can God

  452. do it?

  453. Well,

  454. here's the second

  455. part.

  456. And we must

  457. keep the two

  458. together.

  459. We dare not

  460. divide them.

  461. Gone too far.

  462. Oh,

  463. I'll tell you

  464. what it is.

  465. The justice

  466. of the cross,

  467. sin punished.

  468. The justice

  469. of the cross,

  470. sin punished.

  471. That's the second

  472. part.

  473. Verse 24

  474. of chapter 3.

  475. Let's read

  476. that again.

  477. We are justified

  478. freely by his

  479. grace through

  480. the redemption

  481. that came

  482. by Christ

  483. Jesus.

  484. God

  485. presented him,

  486. that's Jesus,

  487. as a sacrifice

  488. of atonement

  489. through faith

  490. in his blood.

  491. He did this

  492. to demonstrate

  493. his justice.

  494. You see,

  495. the death

  496. of Jesus Christ

  497. on the cross

  498. is how God

  499. deals

  500. with our

  501. deserved judgment

  502. and our

  503. desired forgiveness.

  504. When we

  505. understand

  506. the cross,

  507. when we

  508. see the

  509. tension

  510. between

  511. God's

  512. justice

  513. and God's

  514. grace,

  515. we see

  516. that it

  517. is settled

  518. at the

  519. cross

  520. so that

  521. God

  522. remains

  523. fair

  524. and true

  525. to himself

  526. and to

  527. his character.

  528. And the

  529. key phrase

  530. for us

  531. here in

  532. verse 25

  533. is

  534. sacrifice

  535. of atonement.

  536. God

  537. presented

  538. Jesus

  539. as a

  540. sacrifice

  541. of atonement.

  542. that's

  543. how God

  544. deals

  545. with our

  546. deserved

  547. judgment

  548. and our

  549. desired

  550. forgiveness.

  551. Now we've

  552. come across

  553. this before

  554. as we've

  555. been going

  556. through the

  557. story of

  558. the Bible

  559. and every

  560. time we

  561. come across

  562. sacrifice

  563. of atonement

  564. in the

  565. Bible

  566. it's always

  567. in relation

  568. to God's

  569. wrath or

  570. anger

  571. towards

  572. his people.

  573. And we

  574. find it

  575. hard to

  576. think of

  577. God being

  578. angry.

  579. We don't

  580. like that

  581. idea.

  582. You see

  583. when I

  584. get angry

  585. it's

  586. uncontrolled

  587. and it's

  588. temper-like.

  589. It could

  590. be a

  591. fit of

  592. rage.

  593. But with

  594. God

  595. his anger

  596. is always

  597. controlled.

  598. It is

  599. his reasoned

  600. and just

  601. response

  602. to our

  603. sin.

  604. Maybe

  605. you've

  606. heard this

  607. phrase

  608. from people.

  609. God

  610. hates

  611. sin

  612. but he

  613. loves the

  614. sinner.

  615. You

  616. ever

  617. heard it?

  618. Maybe

  619. you've

  620. said it.

  621. I've

  622. said it.

  623. God

  624. hates

  625. sin

  626. but he

  627. loves

  628. the

  629. sinner.

  630. Well I

  631. think it's

  632. unhelpful

  633. because the

  634. Bible makes

  635. it very

  636. clear that

  637. God

  638. hates

  639. sin

  640. and we

  641. the

  642. sinners

  643. must be

  644. punished.

  645. And the

  646. most uncomfortable

  647. truth as we're

  648. seeing here is

  649. that we're all

  650. under God's

  651. wrath because

  652. our sin is

  653. always an

  654. offence to

  655. God.

  656. We can

  657. never separate

  658. the sin

  659. from the

  660. sinner.

  661. So if

  662. God is

  663. angry at

  664. sin,

  665. if God

  666. is angry

  667. at the

  668. rebellion,

  669. then God

  670. is angry

  671. at me.

  672. Now because

  673. God is

  674. just and he

  675. can't ignore

  676. sin and

  677. pretend it's

  678. not there,

  679. he must

  680. deal with

  681. it.

  682. He can't

  683. just sweep

  684. it under

  685. the carpet

  686. and go,

  687. oh let's

  688. just forget

  689. about it.

  690. And everybody

  691. do as they

  692. please.

  693. That's not

  694. the kind

  695. of world

  696. that God

  697. has made.

  698. But it's

  699. also true

  700. that God

  701. must be

  702. forgiving and

  703. he must be

  704. kind and

  705. compassionate.

  706. That's his

  707. character.

  708. So at

  709. the cross

  710. we see the

  711. two come

  712. together.

  713. We see

  714. our sin

  715. punished

  716. and salvation

  717. provided.

  718. And how

  719. does God

  720. do it?

  721. Well it's

  722. through,

  723. as we see

  724. in verse

  725. 25,

  726. the sacrifice

  727. of atonement.

  728. he presented

  729. Jesus.

  730. The God

  731. man came

  732. into the

  733. world and

  734. Jesus became

  735. the anger

  736. absorber

  737. for us.

  738. Jesus came

  739. like one of

  740. us, a human

  741. being, and

  742. he takes my

  743. sin and your

  744. sin upon

  745. himself and

  746. so the wrath

  747. of God which

  748. comes down

  749. upon the

  750. world is

  751. deflected from

  752. me and it

  753. falls

  754. unto Christ

  755. on the

  756. cross.

  757. Jesus bore

  758. the punishment

  759. that you

  760. and I

  761. justly

  762. deserve.

  763. Do you

  764. remember the

  765. tug of war?

  766. On one

  767. side we have

  768. God, the

  769. anchorman

  770. for justice,

  771. and on the

  772. other side we

  773. have God, the

  774. anchorman

  775. for grace.

  776. Both are

  777. attributes of

  778. God that can

  779. never give

  780. way.

  781. And so we

  782. have this

  783. tension with

  784. the human

  785. race, if

  786. you like, in

  787. the balance.

  788. Is God

  789. going to

  790. bring justice

  791. or is he

  792. going to

  793. bring grace?

  794. Well what

  795. happens is

  796. that God

  797. steps into

  798. the middle.

  799. He steps

  800. into the

  801. middle through

  802. his son,

  803. Jesus Christ.

  804. And as he

  805. dies on the

  806. cross with

  807. his arms

  808. outstretched,

  809. it's like he

  810. spans this

  811. great divide.

  812. He holds

  813. justice in

  814. the one

  815. hand.

  816. And he

  817. holds grace

  818. in the

  819. other hand.

  820. And it's

  821. as if Christ

  822. on the

  823. cross pulls

  824. them together

  825. so that

  826. simultaneously

  827. our deserved

  828. wrath is

  829. dealt with,

  830. the wrath of

  831. God falls on

  832. us, and

  833. our desired

  834. forgiveness

  835. reaches out

  836. to a broken

  837. and dying

  838. world.

  839. At the

  840. cross, sin

  841. is punished

  842. and salvation

  843. is provided.

  844. Now we

  845. must understand

  846. this.

  847. Sometimes it's

  848. portrayed that

  849. God is the

  850. angry one.

  851. You read

  852. through the

  853. Old Testament,

  854. oh God is

  855. full of

  856. justice.

  857. And we get

  858. to the New

  859. Testament and

  860. Jesus is the

  861. loving one and

  862. he's gracious.

  863. But that's a

  864. complete distortion

  865. of the truth.

  866. As we've seen

  867. through the whole

  868. story of the

  869. Bible, God is

  870. both full of

  871. wrath and full

  872. of love.

  873. He is just

  874. and forgiving.

  875. He loves

  876. sinners and

  877. he's angry

  878. with sinners.

  879. And so when

  880. Jesus comes to

  881. die on the

  882. cross for you

  883. and for me,

  884. it's not a

  885. separate third

  886. party, it is

  887. God in Christ

  888. who dies on

  889. the cross for

  890. you and for

  891. me.

  892. God himself

  893. comes down

  894. as a man

  895. and is punished

  896. for my sin

  897. and provides

  898. for my salvation.

  899. God

  900. that is

  901. what he

  902. does.

  903. And how

  904. can we

  905. experience this

  906. for ourselves

  907. and make this

  908. a reality in

  909. our own

  910. lives?

  911. Well again,

  912. look at

  913. verse 25.

  914. God

  915. presented Jesus

  916. as a

  917. sacrifice of

  918. atonement

  919. through

  920. faith

  921. in his

  922. blood.

  923. The only

  924. thing that

  925. we bring to

  926. the table,

  927. the only

  928. thing that

  929. we can

  930. bring to

  931. this is

  932. our sin,

  933. our mess,

  934. our rebellion.

  935. And in

  936. response,

  937. have faith

  938. and trust

  939. in the

  940. God-man

  941. Jesus Christ

  942. who says,

  943. I have

  944. come

  945. to deal

  946. with your

  947. sin,

  948. past,

  949. present and

  950. future,

  951. so that

  952. you can

  953. stand

  954. guilty

  955. though you

  956. are,

  957. as innocent

  958. before God,

  959. holy,

  960. blameless

  961. in his

  962. sight.

  963. And at

  964. the same

  965. time,

  966. receive that

  967. forgiveness,

  968. receive that

  969. grace,

  970. so that we

  971. are now

  972. treasured as

  973. God's

  974. children,

  975. as if we

  976. had never

  977. disobeyed,

  978. as if we

  979. had obeyed

  980. God perfectly.

  981. That is how

  982. he treats

  983. us,

  984. that is how

  985. he loves

  986. us,

  987. and that

  988. is how it

  989. was all

  990. achieved at

  991. the cross.

  992. And so we

  993. respond in

  994. faith,

  995. trusting in

  996. his work,

  997. his perfect

  998. work for

  999. you and

  1000. for me.

  1001. You see,

  1002. this is the

  1003. climax of

  1004. the story.

  1005. This is what

  1006. all the

  1007. little stories

  1008. are all

  1009. about.

  1010. As we

  1011. watch God's

  1012. action through

  1013. it all,

  1014. we see him

  1015. bringing grace,

  1016. we see him

  1017. bringing his

  1018. justice,

  1019. and it's all

  1020. pointing forward

  1021. to this one

  1022. event,

  1023. as Jesus

  1024. dies.

  1025. At the

  1026. cross,

  1027. justice and

  1028. grace are

  1029. demonstrated in

  1030. all its

  1031. fullness.

  1032. That's why

  1033. when Jesus

  1034. died on the

  1035. cross,

  1036. he says,

  1037. it is

  1038. finished.

  1039. It's all

  1040. over.

  1041. God has

  1042. been satisfied

  1043. with the

  1044. work that

  1045. he has

  1046. done.

  1047. There is

  1048. nothing more

  1049. for us to

  1050. do.

  1051. There is

  1052. no more

  1053. fear of

  1054. his justice,

  1055. no more

  1056. fear of

  1057. his judgment.

  1058. We can

  1059. stand as

  1060. his child.

  1061. welcomed into

  1062. his presence.

  1063. This is a

  1064. once and

  1065. for all

  1066. event,

  1067. where God

  1068. both punishes

  1069. sin and

  1070. provides for

  1071. salvation.

  1072. It's at the

  1073. cross where

  1074. wrath and

  1075. mercy meet,

  1076. and justice

  1077. and grace

  1078. flow to a

  1079. needy world.

  1080. at the

  1081. cross is

  1082. where we

  1083. need to

  1084. live our

  1085. lives daily,

  1086. in remembrance

  1087. of all that

  1088. he has done

  1089. and remembrance

  1090. of who we

  1091. are,

  1092. welcomed and

  1093. treasured as

  1094. his children.

  1095. Let's pray

  1096. together.

  1097. tomorrow,

  1098. and

  1099. as

  1100. who

  1101. are

  1102. angled

  1103. ,
