  1. Even I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake and remembers your sin no more.

  2. Psalm 103. The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, if we don't know these verses.

  3. Abounding in love, he will not always accuse, nor will he harbour his anger forever.

  4. He does not treat us as our sins deserve, or repay us according to our iniquities.

  5. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.

  6. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

  7. 1 John.

  8. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.

  9. And the blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us from all sin.

  10. As I said, we've covered all this already this morning.

  11. And we've been flowing through the beauty of that forgiveness.

  12. Forgiveness flows through the very essence of our relationship with our God.

  13. God sent his son.

  14. God sent his son.

  15. His son to shed his blood so our sins could be forgiven.

  16. Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

  17. The heart of our relationship with God is based on who he is and what he has done for us.

  18. Without his forgiveness, we have no relationship.

  19. We have peace though, through Christ Jesus our Lord.

  20. As a coming to preach to you this morning, you can't escape the fact that we've just come through Easter.

  21. And on Easter, I happened to be in Italy, in Naples, where we sent Aoife Bevel.

  22. And we're supporting Aoife to help in a church plant there.

  23. And I sat in the first meeting of that church plant, which was a great blessing to be there.

  24. But because my Italian is very weak and the service was in Italian, I was really picking up every maybe third sentence.

  25. I was able to follow.

  26. But because of that, one particular sentence, and I'm not going to try and repeat it in Italian.

  27. And the preacher said,

  28. We are blessed to know that Jesus said,

  29. Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

  30. That is the message of God to us in forgiveness.

  31. He forgives us.

  32. Because behind it all, he knows that when it gets right down to it,

  33. we, as clever as we may think we are,

  34. most of the time don't even understand what we're doing when we're doing it.

  35. And the treasure we have in the gospel is that Jesus went on the cross

  36. and said,

  37. Father, forgive.

  38. And he has shed his blood so that we can have that forgiveness.

  39. And therefore, since we have been justified through faith,

  40. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  41. It's worth repeating that over and over and over again to ourselves.

  42. We have access to that.

  43. As we have been reminded this morning,

  44. through song and prayer,

  45. and how Johnny reminded us even as we looked at those verses from Colossians first thing this morning.

  46. We have access to that forgiveness if we are born again,

  47. if we are saved,

  48. if we are in Christ Jesus,

  49. if the grace of God has gifted us the faith to understand that,

  50. to know that we have been rescued

  51. and brought from the kingdom of darkness

  52. into the kingdom of light,

  53. the kingdom of the sun.

  54. So if you're not,

  55. hear the voice of God talking to you now.

  56. And if you are,

  57. lift your hearts

  58. and thank Jesus.

  59. Thank Jesus for his shed blood

  60. so that you know the truth of this forgiveness.

  61. I was glad that we had that emphasis this morning

  62. and I wanted to emphasize all those things as we come

  63. because from here on,

  64. I'm going to be talking about

  65. how that forgiveness reflects in our hearts

  66. and how we live our life out amongst each other.

  67. Because not only are we forgiven,

  68. but we are told that we must forgive.

  69. Matthew chapter 6 verse 14

    Matthew 6:14

  70. For if you forgive other people

  71. when they sin against you,

  72. your heavenly Father will also

  73. forgive you.

  74. But if you do not forgive others their sins,

  75. your Father will not forgive your sins.

  76. Matthew 18, 35

  77. This is how my heavenly Father

  78. will treat each of you

  79. unless you forgive your brother

  80. or sister from your heart.

  81. Mark 11, 25

  82. And when you stand praying,

  83. if you hold anything against anyone,

  84. forgive them so that your Father in heaven

  85. may forgive you and your sins.

  86. The picture of forgiveness

  87. flowing from God to us

  88. and from us out to each other

  89. and out into the world

  90. to me is beautiful.

  91. When I was driving down this morning,

  92. I had an opportunity to do something

  93. on a Sunday morning

  94. I normally don't do.

  95. I was flicking through radio stations,

  96. seeing what the world is talking about

  97. on a Sunday morning

  98. because I'm currently blessed

  99. to live two minutes away

  100. from where I fellowship.

  101. So there's no time to listen to anything in the car.

  102. It's a nice thing on a Sunday morning.

  103. But this morning I heard

  104. poets talking about

  105. the life of poetry.

  106. I heard songwriters talking about songwriting.

  107. I heard,

  108. and I'm not going to get into it now,

  109. but I heard a very well-known celebrity

  110. talking about their decadent lifestyle.

  111. And I asked the Lord

  112. to show me how to love that person

  113. as they gloried in their rebellion.

  114. And then I flicked on

  115. and I heard opera.

  116. And I like opera.

  117. Sorry.

  118. I'm not a huge buff,

  119. but I heard Renata Tabaldi.

  120. And if you're into it,

  121. what a beautiful voice.

  122. And she was singing Puccini.

  123. And as I drove along,

  124. that voice and that music

  125. lifted my heart

  126. and made my soul sing.

  127. And I thought to myself,

  128. does my soul still sing like that

  129. when I consider how much God has forgiven me?

  130. Listening to Renata Tabaldi this morning

  131. was like having my ears washed with liquid gold.

  132. That's how it felt like to me.

  133. And I said to myself,

  134. do I still consider

  135. how my soul has been washed

  136. with something more precious than liquid gold?

  137. the blood of Jesus?

  138. And do I respond

  139. in the right way

  140. to Him

  141. and to all of you

  142. and to all of my brothers and sisters?

  143. Do you

  144. still

  145. want to respond that way?

  146. Do you still

  147. look at yourself

  148. full in the glory

  149. of the grace of God

  150. and recognize

  151. how far you've come

  152. and lift your heart

  153. and say,

  154. thank you Jesus.

  155. Thank you God.

  156. Thank you Lord Holy Spirit

  157. for working in my life

  158. to make these things known to me.

  159. In that moment

  160. of recognizing that forgiveness

  161. and what we are to do,

  162. we see the beauty

  163. of the love of God.

  164. And in the quantity

  165. that that forgiveness

  166. is lavished on us,

  167. we should lavish

  168. that forgiveness

  169. on one another,

  170. our brothers and sisters.

  171. Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6:36

  172. verse 36.

  173. Be merciful

  174. just as your Father

  175. is merciful.

  176. Luke 11

  177. and Luke 17.

  178. Forgive us our sins

  179. for we also forgive everyone

  180. who sins against us

  181. and lead us not into temptation.

  182. Even if they sin against you

  183. seven times in a day

  184. and seven times come back to you

  185. saying,

  186. I repent,

  187. you must forgive them.

  188. Forgiveness is central

  189. to our peace with God

  190. but forgiveness

  191. is also central

  192. to our peace

  193. in general.

  194. In the verses

  195. that we've just looked at

  196. and the thoughts

  197. we've been just bringing out,

  198. God has made it clear

  199. that it is His desire

  200. that we be at peace

  201. with Him

  202. and with all men

  203. as much as we are able.

  204. To forgive freely

  205. as we have been forgiven.

  206. to forgive

  207. without limits.

  208. That's really easy,

  209. isn't it?

  210. So easy to forgive

  211. without limits.

  212. I have no problem

  213. with that.

  214. Liar.

  215. It's really hard

  216. for us

  217. as people

  218. to forgive

  219. without limits

  220. especially when

  221. the same things

  222. seem to be happening

  223. around us.

  224. but we have to

  225. fight in that struggle

  226. to seek to do it

  227. in God's way

  228. not our own way.

  229. In our lives

  230. forgiveness

  231. it serves

  232. the most obvious things

  233. to resolve conflicts

  234. to remove

  235. resentments

  236. and forgiveness

  237. is

  238. an expression

  239. of our righteousness

  240. through Christ Jesus

  241. lived out.

  242. and whether we like it

  243. or not

  244. and it's been said

  245. several times already

  246. we are told

  247. to forgive.

  248. We can have no real hope

  249. of resolving conflicts

  250. if we have no heart

  251. to forgive.

  252. And we cannot set limits

  253. on what we are willing

  254. to forgive

  255. or how many times

  256. we are willing

  257. to forgive.

  258. in as much

  259. as God's

  260. boundless love

  261. has covered

  262. our boundless sin

  263. we are to forgive

  264. our brothers and sisters

  265. in Christ

  266. endlessly.

  267. Everybody knows

  268. this verse I think

  269. if you've spent

  270. any time in church.

  271. Matthew 18

    Matthew 18:21

  272. verse 21

  273. Then Peter came

  274. to Jesus

  275. and asked

  276. Lord

  277. how many times

  278. shall I forgive

  279. my brother

  280. when he sins

  281. against me?

  282. Up to seven times?

  283. Yeah

  284. good man.

  285. And Jesus answered

  286. I tell you

  287. not seven times

  288. but 77 times.

  289. We know what Jesus

  290. was saying there.

  291. Don't put a limit on it.

  292. And just as we live

  293. in our life in general

  294. don't limit it

  295. to your brothers and sisters.

  296. Our heart is to be

  297. of love and forgiveness

  298. for those

  299. not outside the church

  300. as well.

  301. How can we hope

  302. to want to love them?

  303. But I tell you

  304. love your enemies

  305. and pray for those

  306. who persecute you.

  307. What's an enemy?

  308. An enemy is not

  309. somebody who's just

  310. mildly upsetting you

  311. causing you a little

  312. discomfort.

  313. An enemy is somebody

  314. who's totally opposed

  315. to everything you are

  316. and everything you want

  317. and everything you hope for.

  318. How are you going

  319. to love an enemy?

  320. Unless you have the heart

  321. to forgive.

  322. Now I don't want

  323. anyone to misunderstand

  324. either.

  325. I did not

  326. and I am not saying

  327. that you must

  328. ignore the sin

  329. that is done to you.

  330. I'm not saying

  331. that you have to

  332. blithely go by

  333. and say

  334. ignore it.

  335. The wrongs

  336. that are done

  337. may be dealt with

  338. if you wish.

  339. If you wish

  340. the wrongs

  341. may be dealt with.

  342. But our pattern

  343. has to be the one

  344. that we're given.

  345. Matthew 18

  346. 15 to 17

  347. again

  348. I'm sure I'm not

  349. sharing anything

  350. new with you

  351. if you are in the

  352. fellowship for any

  353. length of time.

  354. If you are in the

  355. church of Christ

  356. for any length of time

  357. you will know

  358. that Jesus said

  359. if your brother

  360. sins against you

  361. go and show him

  362. his fault

  363. just between

  364. the two of you.

  365. If he listens to you

  366. you have won

  367. your brother over.

  368. But if he will

  369. not listen

  370. take one or two

  371. others along

  372. so that

  373. every matter

  374. may be established

  375. by the testimony

  376. of two or three

  377. witnesses.

  378. If he refuses

  379. to listen to them

  380. tell it to the church

  381. and if he refuses

  382. to listen even

  383. to the church

  384. treat him

  385. as you would

  386. a pagan

  387. or a tax collector.

  388. You do not

  389. have to suffer

  390. in silence

  391. but neither

  392. do you have

  393. the right

  394. to add further

  395. sin and injury

  396. on top of

  397. a previous

  398. injury.

  399. In all things

  400. we are to be

  401. biblically

  402. minded.

  403. We are to be

  404. faithful to the

  405. desires of

  406. Jesus

  407. in our lives.

  408. He wants

  409. us

  410. plainly speaking

  411. to be

  412. peacemakers

  413. not

  414. troublemakers.

  415. Verse 15

  416. If your brother

  417. sins against you

  418. go and show

  419. him his fault

  420. just between

  421. the two of you.

  422. If he listens

  423. to you

  424. you have won

  425. your brother

  426. over.

  427. There is the

  428. first part

  429. of the model

  430. of how we are

  431. to deal

  432. with these

  433. issues

  434. if we feel

  435. wronged.

  436. It dictates

  437. our attitude

  438. too.

  439. It's so easy

  440. to feel

  441. aggrieved.

  442. It really

  443. is so easy

  444. to feel

  445. aggrieved.

  446. How many

  447. times have

  448. you felt

  449. aggrieved

  450. and had

  451. that feeling

  452. of hurt

  453. that you've

  454. been wronged?

  455. And it

  456. builds up

  457. a head of

  458. steam

  459. inside you.

  460. And you

  461. can get to

  462. the point

  463. of rather

  464. than really

  465. wanting

  466. restoration

  467. and

  468. reconciliation

  469. you really

  470. just wanted

  471. the other

  472. person

  473. put in

  474. their

  475. place.

  476. To show

  477. them how

  478. wrong they

  479. are.

  480. Even if

  481. you let

  482. it stew

  483. for too

  484. long

  485. building up

  486. that momentum

  487. that you

  488. just want

  489. to ring

  490. from their

  491. mouth

  492. an apology

  493. so that

  494. you can

  495. say yes

  496. I was

  497. right.

  498. You

  499. were

  500. wrong.

  501. And if

  502. you do

  503. that

  504. sometimes

  505. before you

  506. even get

  507. to that

  508. point

  509. you've

  510. told this

  511. person

  512. or you've

  513. told another

  514. person.

  515. Sometimes

  516. we can

  517. even be

  518. very clever

  519. and dress

  520. it up

  521. saying I'm

  522. looking for

  523. prayer.

  524. I just

  525. want to

  526. pray about

  527. this.

  528. And we're

  529. avoiding the

  530. fact that

  531. what we

  532. should have

  533. done is

  534. gone to

  535. the person.

  536. Building

  537. ourselves up

  538. getting ready

  539. to put the

  540. other person

  541. in their

  542. place.

  543. setting them

  544. straight.

  545. Letting them

  546. know what

  547. they need

  548. to know.

  549. And forgetting

  550. that what

  551. we're supposed

  552. to do is

  553. pray and

  554. then go to

  555. the person.

  556. Pray then

  557. say to

  558. the person.

  559. Just between

  560. the two of

  561. you.

  562. And it

  563. means just

  564. that.

  565. Speak

  566. to the

  567. person.

  568. Speak

  569. to them.

  570. What happens

  571. next is a

  572. different

  573. matter.

  574. Only if

  575. the person

  576. refuses to

  577. resolve are

  578. we to do

  579. anything else.

  580. And still

  581. what's the

  582. purpose of

  583. it?

  584. Not to

  585. show the

  586. other person

  587. how wrong

  588. they were.

  589. The real

  590. purpose is

  591. reconciliation

  592. restoration.

  593. And restoration.

  594. We have the

  595. have to have

  596. the heart

  597. to want

  598. to say

  599. something,

  600. to fix

  601. something.

  602. a gentle

  603. answer turns

  604. away

  605. wrath,

  606. but a

  607. harsh word

  608. stirs up

  609. anger.

  610. We have

  611. to be

  612. careful.

  613. And even

  614. if we have

  615. been wronged,

  616. it doesn't

  617. mean we have

  618. to actually

  619. seek out

  620. the person.

  621. We can

  622. choose to

  623. forgive

  624. and let

  625. it go.

  626. You don't

  627. have to

  628. correct

  629. everybody,

  630. you know.

  631. you can

  632. choose to

  633. analyze the

  634. thing and

  635. go,

  636. that can

  637. be left.

  638. I can

  639. choose to

  640. forgive.

  641. It certainly

  642. doesn't mean

  643. you seek

  644. revenge or

  645. retribution.

  646. That seems

  647. fairly basic.

  648. That's God's

  649. job anyway.

  650. It's mine to

  651. avenge, I

  652. will repay,

  653. says the

  654. Lord.

  655. So if you

  656. have been

  657. grievously

  658. hurt, you

  659. can still

  660. forgive and

  661. trust that God

  662. will deal with

  663. somebody else's

  664. sin.

  665. We're not

  666. told to

  667. overcome evil

  668. with evil.

  669. We're told to

  670. overcome evil

  671. with good.

  672. It's not an

  673. eye for a

  674. nine.

  675. Jesus said,

  676. turn the

  677. other cheek.

  678. Be careful in

  679. your responses.

  680. If somebody

  681. forces you to

  682. go one mile,

  683. dig in your

  684. heels and

  685. refuse to go

  686. the second.

  687. That's what it

  688. says, isn't

  689. it?

  690. No, it

  691. says, go

  692. two.

  693. But we

  694. have fallen

  695. so often

  696. and so

  697. easily into

  698. the counsel

  699. of what the

  700. world says,

  701. stand your

  702. corner,

  703. fight your

  704. ground,

  705. don't be a

  706. doormat.

  707. That's one

  708. that I hear

  709. all the time,

  710. but we're not

  711. meant to be

  712. doormats.

  713. And people

  714. use that as

  715. going, well,

  716. I am going

  717. to stand up

  718. for myself and

  719. I am going

  720. to show that

  721. person that I'm

  722. the one who's

  723. right here.

  724. And straight

  725. away we're in

  726. dangerous territory,

  727. we're on

  728. dangerous ground.

  729. Even Christ

  730. corrected,

  731. even Christ

  732. scolded.

  733. Read what he

  734. said to the

  735. Pharisees.

  736. Look what he

  737. did in the

  738. temple.

  739. But,

  740. they were

  741. particular groups.

  742. Look how he

  743. dealt with his

  744. own when he

  745. had to

  746. correct.

  747. He was,

  748. for the

  749. most part,

  750. so gentle

  751. with his

  752. own.

  753. And he

  754. covers us in

  755. his forgiving

  756. love and he

  757. tells us,

  758. well, we

  759. must do the

  760. same or else

  761. we're just

  762. like the rest

  763. of the world.

  764. We must act

  765. out in love.

  766. We know

  767. these verses

  768. too.

  769. What is love?

  770. Well, love is

  771. not rude, it

  772. is not

  773. self-seeking,

  774. it is not

  775. easily angered,

  776. it keeps no

  777. records of

  778. wrongs.

  779. Love does

  780. not delight

  781. in evil,

  782. but rejoices

  783. with the

  784. truth.

  785. And when

  786. we're looking

  787. at these

  788. things that

  789. we have to

  790. deal with

  791. in our

  792. heart of

  793. forgiveness

  794. and in

  795. our

  796. troubles

  797. and our

  798. challenges,

  799. do we

  800. really want

  801. the truth

  802. to come

  803. out,

  804. or do

  805. we just

  806. want our

  807. version of

  808. the truth

  809. to be

  810. accepted?

  811. It's so

  812. easy to

  813. get into

  814. the mindset

  815. of

  816. rebuking

  817. rather than

  818. reconciliation.

  819. As

  820. brothers and

  821. sisters,

  822. we have a

  823. responsibility

  824. to mind

  825. each other.

  826. So if

  827. somebody's

  828. going wrong,

  829. yes,

  830. we should

  831. get alongside

  832. somebody and

  833. help them to

  834. return.

  835. But rebuking,

  836. that may not

  837. be your

  838. job.

  839. It's your

  840. elder's job,

  841. maybe at

  842. times.

  843. It's

  844. definitely

  845. God's

  846. job.

  847. And trust

  848. God.

  849. Protecting

  850. somebody from

  851. sin is not

  852. the same thing

  853. as putting

  854. them in

  855. their place.

  856. It's not.

  857. Look at

  858. David.

  859. He's been

  860. pursued by

  861. King Saul.

  862. Look at

  863. 1 Samuel 24.

  864. David had

  865. the opportunity

  866. to take his

  867. revenge on

  868. Saul.

  869. But he

  870. didn't.

  871. He showed

  872. him respect

  873. and honour.

  874. Revenge is

  875. mine, says

  876. the Lord.

  877. And here,

  878. I think,

  879. is the part

  880. that I have

  881. had to talk

  882. to people

  883. about on

  884. so many

  885. occasions.

  886. And here's

  887. the part that

  888. can really

  889. tick us off,

  890. folks.

  891. There is

  892. no limit

  893. to the

  894. number of

  895. times we

  896. are meant

  897. to forgive.

  898. that is

  899. hard for

  900. us to

  901. accept as

  902. people.

  903. Because we

  904. don't like

  905. being hurt

  906. repeatedly.

  907. It hurts

  908. us.

  909. It makes

  910. us feel

  911. rotten

  912. and brow

  913. beaten

  914. and low

  915. and sad.

  916. It makes

  917. us cry.

  918. I put my

  919. hand up.

  920. I've cried.

  921. I've cried

  922. in my

  923. fellowship.

  924. at some

  925. of the

  926. things that

  927. have been

  928. said to

  929. me.

  930. But that

  931. doesn't give

  932. me the

  933. right to

  934. do anything

  935. else other

  936. than what

  937. Christ Jesus

  938. has done

  939. for me

  940. and forgive.

  941. When Peter

  942. comes to the

  943. Lord, he

  944. says, Lord,

  945. how many

  946. times?

  947. And the

  948. Lord says,

  949. not seven,

  950. but seven

  951. times seventy.

  952. in the

  953. measure that

  954. we are

  955. forgiven,

  956. we must

  957. forgive.

  958. Now that

  959. verse is

  960. taken out of

  961. a much

  962. longer passage

  963. in Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  964. chapter 18.

  965. verse 23.

  966. And he

  967. says,

  968. therefore,

  969. the kingdom

  970. of heaven

  971. is like a

  972. king who

  973. wants to

  974. settle accounts

  975. with his

  976. servants.

  977. And he

  978. goes on to

  979. tell the

  980. parable of

  981. the servant

  982. who is

  983. forgiven

  984. much.

  985. And what

  986. is his

  987. response?

  988. He goes

  989. out and

  990. he seeks

  991. retribution,

  992. let's use

  993. that word,

  994. against those

  995. who owe

  996. him.

  997. And the

  998. king is

  999. furious.

  1000. And the

  1001. king says,

  1002. in the

  1003. measure,

  1004. paraphrasing

  1005. it, that

  1006. you have

  1007. been forgiven,

  1008. you should

  1009. have forgiven

  1010. others.

  1011. You can

  1012. read that

  1013. later to

  1014. remind

  1015. yourself.

  1016. In the

  1017. measure that

  1018. we are

  1019. forgiven,

  1020. we need

  1021. to forgive.

  1022. We have

  1023. to guard

  1024. our hearts

  1025. against

  1026. developing a

  1027. spirit of

  1028. unforgiveness

  1029. and resentment.

  1030. It seems

  1031. obvious to

  1032. say it, but

  1033. resentment is

  1034. the enemy

  1035. of forgiveness.

  1036. Resentment

  1037. leads to

  1038. unforgiveness.

  1039. And both

  1040. of those

  1041. things are

  1042. poisonous

  1043. instruments

  1044. that the

  1045. devil uses

  1046. in our

  1047. lives.

  1048. Resentment

  1049. is poison.

  1050. Augustine

  1051. said many,

  1052. many,

  1053. many,

  1054. many,

  1055. many,

  1056. many,

  1057. many,

  1058. centuries

  1059. ago,

  1060. resentment

  1061. is like

  1062. drinking

  1063. poison

  1064. and

  1065. expecting

  1066. the

  1067. other

  1068. person

  1069. to

  1070. die.

  1071. That

  1072. has been

  1073. used

  1074. many

  1075. times

  1076. by

  1077. different

  1078. people.

  1079. About

  1080. three years

  1081. ago,

  1082. I actually

  1083. heard Peter

  1084. Andre say

  1085. it,

  1086. believe it

  1087. or not.

  1088. But it

  1089. has its

  1090. original

  1091. use in

  1092. terms of

  1093. our spirit

  1094. of forgiveness

  1095. that flows

  1096. from God

  1097. to us

  1098. and us

  1099. out.

  1100. But resentment

  1101. is like

  1102. drinking

  1103. poison

  1104. and expecting

  1105. somebody else

  1106. to die.

  1107. Satan loves

  1108. unforgiveness

  1109. because it

  1110. wraps up

  1111. individuals

  1112. in anger

  1113. and hate

  1114. and strife.

  1115. It destroys

  1116. fellowships.

  1117. It splits

  1118. churches.

  1119. God

  1120. loves

  1121. forgiveness.

  1122. Forgiveness

  1123. breaks

  1124. chains.

  1125. We were

  1126. chained

  1127. in sin.

  1128. What broke

  1129. the chains?

  1130. Forgiveness.

  1131. God

  1132. loves

  1133. forgiveness.

  1134. Forgiveness

  1135. breaks

  1136. chains.

  1137. Unforgiveness

  1138. binds

  1139. chains

  1140. around us.

  1141. Unforgiveness

  1142. towards

  1143. other people,

  1144. brothers and

  1145. sisters,

  1146. those outside

  1147. our fellowship.

  1148. Unforgiveness

  1149. puts

  1150. chains

  1151. of their

  1152. sin

  1153. back

  1154. around us.

  1155. When we

  1156. don't

  1157. forgive,

  1158. we are

  1159. taking the

  1160. sin of

  1161. somebody else,

  1162. tying it

  1163. to ourselves

  1164. and carrying

  1165. it on.

  1166. And often

  1167. that person

  1168. is completely

  1169. unaware

  1170. that you've

  1171. loaded yourself

  1172. with their

  1173. sin and

  1174. are dragging

  1175. it around.

  1176. unforgiveness.

  1177. And that's

  1178. when we're

  1179. defeated in

  1180. unforgiveness.

  1181. Satan has

  1182. the victory

  1183. there.

  1184. Here's an

  1185. idea.

  1186. Let's put

  1187. one over

  1188. on Satan.

  1189. Let's forgive

  1190. each other

  1191. quickly and

  1192. not give him

  1193. even the

  1194. slightest

  1195. foothold in

  1196. our relationships

  1197. with one

  1198. another.

  1199. And always

  1200. listen to

  1201. Jesus and

  1202. remember that's

  1203. the truth

  1204. that sets

  1205. us free.

  1206. Corrie Ten Boom

  1207. said of

  1208. forgiveness.

  1209. Forgiveness is

  1210. the key that

  1211. unlocks the

  1212. door of

  1213. resentment and

  1214. the handcuffs

  1215. of hate.

  1216. It is a

  1217. power that

  1218. breaks the

  1219. chains of

  1220. bitterness and

  1221. the shackles

  1222. of selfishness.

  1223. I talk to

  1224. people about

  1225. this a lot

  1226. in my role.

  1227. And I

  1228. keep getting

  1229. asked,

  1230. but what

  1231. about my

  1232. apology?

  1233. But what

  1234. about them

  1235. making it

  1236. right?

  1237. Well, yeah,

  1238. that should

  1239. happen where

  1240. it is possible.

  1241. But in some

  1242. cases, that's

  1243. never going to

  1244. happen.

  1245. There are

  1246. cases where

  1247. there are

  1248. hurts and

  1249. sin, wrong

  1250. doing, where

  1251. you're never

  1252. going to get

  1253. an apology.

  1254. You're going

  1255. to hang on

  1256. and hang on

  1257. and hang on

  1258. carrying the

  1259. weight of

  1260. that other

  1261. person's

  1262. wrongdoing

  1263. around with

  1264. you.

  1265. What if the

  1266. person has

  1267. died?

  1268. You can't

  1269. ring an

  1270. apology from

  1271. a dead

  1272. person.

  1273. What if the

  1274. person lives

  1275. 12,000 miles

  1276. away and you

  1277. have no

  1278. contact with

  1279. them?

  1280. It's my

  1281. personal

  1282. experience,

  1283. folks.

  1284. Somebody did

  1285. something

  1286. absolutely

  1287. horrendous to

  1288. me.

  1289. Sorry, I was

  1290. just looking

  1291. around at the

  1292. profile.

  1293. I want you to

  1294. know this because

  1295. I'm not speaking

  1296. from a point of

  1297. going, I've

  1298. not looked at

  1299. these issues and

  1300. had to deal with

  1301. them myself.

  1302. before I was a

  1303. Christian, I was

  1304. a complete and

  1305. utter basket

  1306. case.

  1307. When I was a

  1308. child, I was

  1309. abused by a

  1310. woman.

  1311. It caused me

  1312. huge problems all

  1313. through my teenage

  1314. years into my

  1315. adulthood.

  1316. I went for

  1317. secular counseling

  1318. in my 20s.

  1319. Thankfully,

  1320. somebody dragged

  1321. me there because

  1322. at that point I

  1323. was in a bad

  1324. way.

  1325. The secular

  1326. counselor helped

  1327. me to deal

  1328. with the

  1329. anger.

  1330. So I

  1331. stopped being

  1332. angry.

  1333. But I can

  1334. tell you now

  1335. that every

  1336. morning I

  1337. woke up and

  1338. I opened my

  1339. eyes, the

  1340. first thing I

  1341. thought about

  1342. every day,

  1343. every day,

  1344. was what that

  1345. person had done

  1346. to me.

  1347. And then I

  1348. became a

  1349. Christian and I

  1350. learned about

  1351. forgiveness.

  1352. And I learned

  1353. about what I'd

  1354. been forgiven.

  1355. And over

  1356. time, I

  1357. realized that I

  1358. had to forgive

  1359. people.

  1360. And it

  1361. hit me straight

  1362. in the face

  1363. one day that

  1364. whether I liked

  1365. it or not,

  1366. for me to be

  1367. free of what

  1368. that person had

  1369. done, I had to

  1370. forgive.

  1371. That person was

  1372. living 12,000

  1373. miles away.

  1374. I couldn't walk

  1375. up to the door

  1376. and say,

  1377. hey, I want a

  1378. word.

  1379. There's no point

  1380. in arguing with

  1381. me.

  1382. What you've done

  1383. is wrong.

  1384. There's no

  1385. point in,

  1386. there's no need

  1387. for me to lay

  1388. it out.

  1389. There's no

  1390. excuse for what

  1391. you did.

  1392. What you did

  1393. is wrong.

  1394. It can't be

  1395. excused.

  1396. There's no

  1397. argument.

  1398. Irrelevant.

  1399. What I had to

  1400. do was get

  1401. on my knees

  1402. and pray to

  1403. God for the

  1404. strength to

  1405. forgive.

  1406. I know that

  1407. some of these

  1408. things that are

  1409. in our lives

  1410. are not easy

  1411. to forgive.

  1412. And I prayed

  1413. and I prayed

  1414. and I prayed

  1415. and I prayed.

  1416. I can even

  1417. remember one

  1418. morning I got

  1419. on my knees

  1420. and I said,

  1421. I forgive,

  1422. name to the

  1423. person.

  1424. I forgive you

  1425. for what you've

  1426. done.

  1427. I forgive you

  1428. for the damage

  1429. it's caused.

  1430. I forgive you.

  1431. And I stopped,

  1432. I lifted my

  1433. head and I

  1434. went,

  1435. oh well God,

  1436. you and I both

  1437. know that that

  1438. was a joke.

  1439. Because I wasn't

  1440. there yet.

  1441. But I got there

  1442. and I stopped

  1443. waking up every

  1444. morning with it

  1445. being the first

  1446. thing.

  1447. and it set

  1448. me free

  1449. from what

  1450. they had

  1451. done.

  1452. Now that's

  1453. a heavy story

  1454. but I am

  1455. just sharing

  1456. it at this

  1457. moment.

  1458. I had no

  1459. intention of

  1460. doing that

  1461. when I stood

  1462. up here this

  1463. morning.

  1464. But as I

  1465. read the

  1466. sentence I

  1467. said I

  1468. must share

  1469. this.

  1470. I'm not

  1471. talking to

  1472. you from

  1473. a position

  1474. where I've

  1475. not had to

  1476. deal with

  1477. tough stuff.

  1478. But as I've

  1479. looked through

  1480. too,

  1481. I've realized

  1482. that as I

  1483. saw what I

  1484. needed to

  1485. forgive,

  1486. I also saw

  1487. what I needed

  1488. to seek

  1489. forgiveness for

  1490. because shock,

  1491. surprise,

  1492. none of us

  1493. are perfect.

  1494. You don't

  1495. need an apology

  1496. to forgive

  1497. someone.

  1498. As long as

  1499. you don't

  1500. forgive them,

  1501. their sin

  1502. will continue

  1503. to hurt you.

  1504. It doesn't

  1505. matter what it

  1506. is.

  1507. I had

  1508. somebody who

  1509. was counseled

  1510. by a secular

  1511. counselor to

  1512. write a long

  1513. letter to

  1514. somebody who

  1515. had hurt

  1516. them detailing

  1517. all the

  1518. hurts and

  1519. then send

  1520. it to the

  1521. person.

  1522. It destroyed

  1523. that relationship

  1524. forever.

  1525. The person

  1526. had done this

  1527. before they

  1528. came to me

  1529. and I asked

  1530. them to go

  1531. back to the

  1532. person and

  1533. ask for

  1534. forgiveness for

  1535. sending that

  1536. list of things

  1537. that happened

  1538. 20 years ago.

  1539. And then I

  1540. said to the

  1541. person,

  1542. now you go

  1543. and pray to

  1544. forgive them

  1545. and try and

  1546. forget about

  1547. that list.

  1548. They're still

  1549. working through

  1550. it.

  1551. We need to

  1552. break the

  1553. chain of

  1554. hurt.

  1555. Break the

  1556. chain, the

  1557. anchor of

  1558. unforgiveness

  1559. that is

  1560. keeping us

  1561. locked in

  1562. the past.

  1563. As Christ

  1564. hung on the

  1565. cross, he

  1566. cried out,

  1567. Father,

  1568. forgive them

  1569. for they do

  1570. not know what

  1571. they are

  1572. doing.

  1573. Most people

  1574. don't even

  1575. realize they're

  1576. doing things

  1577. to hurt us.

  1578. sinless.

  1579. It's the

  1580. sad reality

  1581. of our

  1582. fallen and

  1583. broken nature

  1584. that most

  1585. of the time

  1586. we don't

  1587. even realize

  1588. we're doing

  1589. things that

  1590. hurt one

  1591. another.

  1592. But we

  1593. need to look

  1594. to heaven

  1595. to see what

  1596. we do next.

  1597. And although

  1598. it can be

  1599. said that

  1600. Christ and

  1601. his perfect

  1602. sinlessness

  1603. was able to

  1604. do these

  1605. things and

  1606. we're just

  1607. people,

  1608. we have

  1609. the power

  1610. of God

  1611. with us.

  1612. And we

  1613. are to be

  1614. ruled by

  1615. the Spirit

  1616. of God.

  1617. And we

  1618. know what

  1619. the fruit

  1620. of the

  1621. Spirit is.

  1622. And the

  1623. Spirit should

  1624. dictate how

  1625. we react in

  1626. each situation.

  1627. It should

  1628. rule our

  1629. every response

  1630. in every

  1631. situation.

  1632. And one

  1633. thing that

  1634. should tell

  1635. us that we

  1636. have no

  1637. right to

  1638. withhold

  1639. forgiveness

  1640. from anybody

  1641. comes from

  1642. Christ.

  1643. Psalm 25

    Psalms 25:11

  1644. verse 11

  1645. tells us,

  1646. For the

  1647. sake of

  1648. your name

  1649. O Lord,

  1650. forgive my

  1651. iniquity

  1652. though it

  1653. is great.

  1654. Forgive my

  1655. iniquity.

  1656. Forgive my

  1657. sin.

  1658. Not one of

  1659. us gets in

  1660. here clean.

  1661. Jonathan

  1662. Edwards said,

  1663. Christ will

  1664. forgive any

  1665. sinner.

  1666. Christ will

  1667. not refuse

  1668. to save the

  1669. greatest sinners

  1670. who in a

  1671. right manner

  1672. come to God

  1673. for mercy.

  1674. This is his

  1675. work.

  1676. It is the

  1677. honor of

  1678. Christ to

  1679. save the

  1680. greatest

  1681. sinners when

  1682. they come

  1683. to him,

  1684. just as it

  1685. is the

  1686. honor of

  1687. a physician

  1688. to cure

  1689. the most

  1690. desperate

  1691. disease or

  1692. wounds.

  1693. Christ will

  1694. forgive any

  1695. sinner.

  1696. We have

  1697. no right

  1698. to withhold

  1699. forgiveness

  1700. from anybody,

  1701. but especially

  1702. not our

  1703. brothers and

  1704. sisters.

  1705. Colossians

    Colossians 3:13

  1706. chapter 3

  1707. verse 13.

  1708. Bear with

  1709. each other

  1710. and forgive

  1711. whatever grievances

  1712. you may have

  1713. against one

  1714. another.

  1715. Forgive as

  1716. the Lord

  1717. forgave you.

  1718. As in all

  1719. things,

  1720. Christ is our

  1721. example.

  1722. He is the

  1723. perfect example

  1724. to us.

  1725. He has

  1726. redeemed us

  1727. and he is the

  1728. one we are to

  1729. model.

  1730. When they hurled

  1731. their insults at

  1732. him, he didn't

  1733. retaliate.

  1734. When he suffered,

  1735. he made no

  1736. threats.

  1737. We have to

  1738. have the

  1739. attitude of

  1740. Christ.

  1741. And we,

  1742. in this,

  1743. as in all

  1744. things, are

  1745. more than

  1746. conquerors,

  1747. because we

  1748. can do all

  1749. things through

  1750. Christ.

  1751. It doesn't

  1752. mean it's

  1753. easy to get

  1754. there.

  1755. And that's

  1756. why we need

  1757. to live in

  1758. the power of

  1759. the Spirit

  1760. of God.

  1761. And we

  1762. need to

  1763. recognize to

  1764. live like

  1765. this will

  1766. take commitment

  1767. and faithfulness

  1768. on our

  1769. part.

  1770. we're given

  1771. all we need

  1772. for a life

  1773. of holiness,

  1774. for a life

  1775. of godliness,

  1776. but we'll

  1777. never fully

  1778. experience it

  1779. unless we

  1780. make the

  1781. effort to

  1782. be entirely

  1783. entwined

  1784. with Jesus.

  1785. You can't

  1786. have a

  1787. casual

  1788. attitude

  1789. to Jesus

  1790. and to

  1791. the Word

  1792. of God

  1793. and really

  1794. expect to

  1795. lay hold

  1796. of the

  1797. treasures of

  1798. heaven.

  1799. God has

  1800. expressed

  1801. his love

  1802. to us

  1803. through

  1804. forgiveness

  1805. and we

  1806. know this

  1807. because while

  1808. we were still

  1809. sinners,

  1810. Christ died

  1811. for us.

  1812. It's an

  1813. expression of

  1814. his unending,

  1815. unshakable,

  1816. unbreakable,

  1817. never fading,

  1818. always faithful

  1819. love to us.

  1820. And we know

  1821. that we have

  1822. the righteousness

  1823. of Christ

  1824. when we live

  1825. as he intended.

  1826. inasmuch as

  1827. God's

  1828. boundless love

  1829. covers our

  1830. boundless sin,

  1831. we are to

  1832. forgive our

  1833. brothers and

  1834. sisters as

  1835. we seek to

  1836. love them as

  1837. Christ did.

  1838. Whoever claims

  1839. to live in him

  1840. must walk as

  1841. Jesus did.

  1842. Whoever loves

  1843. his brother

  1844. lives in the

  1845. light and there

  1846. is nothing in

  1847. him to make

  1848. him stumble.

  1849. But whoever

  1850. hates his

  1851. brother is in

  1852. the darkness

  1853. and walks

  1854. around in the

  1855. darkness.

  1856. He does not

  1857. know where he

  1858. is going because

  1859. the darkness

  1860. has blinded

  1861. him.

  1862. I write to

  1863. you, dear

  1864. children,

  1865. because your

  1866. sins have

  1867. been forgiven

  1868. on account

  1869. of his

  1870. name.

  1871. Luke chapter

    Luke 6:36

  1872. 6, verse

  1873. 36.

  1874. Be merciful

  1875. just as

  1876. your father

  1877. is merciful.

  1878. And never

  1879. forget, in

  1880. forgiving others

  1881. you are set

  1882. free, free

  1883. from the

  1884. chain of

  1885. others'

  1886. sin.

  1887. and free

  1888. to love

  1889. as fully

  1890. intended.

  1891. In

  1892. conclusion,

  1893. forgive.

  1894. It sets

  1895. you free.

  1896. It

  1897. confounds

  1898. Satan.

  1899. And it

  1900. pleases the

  1901. Lord.

  1902. Amen.
