  1. In the following directive, I have no praise for you.

  2. For your meeting, do more harm than good.

  3. In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions

  4. among you.

  5. And to some extent, I believe it.

  6. No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.

  7. When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper you eat.

  8. For as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else.

  9. One remains hungry, other gets drunk.

  10. Don't you have homes to eat and drink in?

  11. Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing?

  12. What shall I say to you?

  13. Shall I praise you for this?

  14. Certainly not.

  15. For I receive from the Lord what I also pass on to you.

  16. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he

  17. broke it and said,

  18. This is my body, which is for you.

  19. Do this in remembrance of me.

  20. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup, saying,

  21. This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

  22. Do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me.

  23. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

  24. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in the unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

  25. A man ought to examine himself before he eats the bread and drinks of the cup.

  26. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizes the body of the Lord, eats and drinks judgment on himself.

  27. This is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

  28. But if we judge ourselves, we will not come under judgment.

  29. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

  30. So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other.

  31. If anyone is hungry, he shall eat at home, so that when you meet together, it may not result in judgment.

  32. And when I come, I will further directions.

  33. Well, please keep your Bibles open at 1 Corinthians 11.

  34. And we're going to be looking at verses 17 to 34.

  35. And let's pray together.

  36. Our Father God, as we celebrate, as we remember together the death of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  37. we ask that you would use these words that we look at together to prepare our hearts.

  38. So that we may benefit richly from the grace and mercy, forgiveness and hope that flows from this simple meal of remembering Christ's death.

  39. So please help us all as we gather and remember.

  40. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. Amen.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. Amen.

  47. Well, when I was growing up in our family home, we had a rule when it came to mealtimes.

  48. You might have the same rule even today.

  49. The rule was this.

  50. We were not allowed to start eating until everyone was served.

  51. In fact, we weren't even allowed to leave the table until everybody had finished.

  52. Sometimes, I think, in our house, people deliberately took their time so that everybody had to wait.

  53. And to a hungry teenager like me who saw mealtime as simply nothing more than a quick refueling stop, it was ridiculous.

  54. It was a stupid rule.

  55. However, over time, I began to see the reasoning of my parents.

  56. For mealtime is much more than just eating food.

  57. It's family time.

  58. It's about sharing, talking, growing in the family relationship.

  59. Now, it seems that the church in Corinth were treating the Lord's Supper as just another meal.

  60. At best, it was a quick, personal reflection before God, which had nothing to do with their relationships to each other.

  61. So, in verse 17, Paul responds to something he's heard about in the church.

  62. In the following directives, I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.

  63. Their table manners at the Lord's Supper were dreadful.

  64. In fact, their behaviour was so bad.

  65. Look at verse 20.

  66. When you come together, it's not the Lord's Supper that you eat.

  67. Yes, they were eating the bread and drinking the wine.

  68. But really, it had nothing to do with the death of the Lord Jesus.

  69. You see, when God saves us, he saves us into his church.

  70. God not only forgives us, he welcomes us into his family.

  71. And as God's family, we are to gather together as one people.

  72. So, look at verse 18.

  73. He says,

  74. In the first place, I hear that when you come together as church.

  75. Or verse 33.

  76. So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat.

  77. You see, the church is not a collection of isolated individuals.

  78. We are the forgiven family of God who gather together.

  79. That's why we're all here right now.

  80. That's why we've made it our priority to be here.

  81. And one of the central things we do together as family is to share in this simple meal that is set out before us today.

  82. The Lord's Supper.

  83. It's not a personal refueling exercise where we come individually to get a little bit more grace and a bit of forgiveness until the next time.

  84. No, this is a deeply intimate and communal meal where we gather together as family.

  85. So, what should happen when we gather to celebrate the Lord's Supper together?

  86. Well, three big things we're going to look at.

  87. First, as we gather round the Lord's Supper, we need to root out any division in Christ's body.

  88. Root out any division in Christ's body.

  89. Look at verse 18.

  90. In the first place, I hear that when you come together as church, there are divisions among you.

  91. And to some extent, I believe it.

  92. Instead of being united as one, the church is breaking and falling apart.

  93. No doubt there has to be difference among you to show which of you have God's approval.

  94. Sadly, he's saying, there's always going to be some kind of division.

  95. Because, well, God's family is made up of sinners like you and me.

  96. Messy people.

  97. And we do, from time to time, fall out.

  98. But that is not an excuse.

  99. The desire should always be to root out any division in Christ's body, the church.

  100. And sadly, the division was most evident when they gathered to celebrate the Lord's Supper.

  101. Verse 20.

  102. So when you come together, it's not the Lord's Supper you eat.

  103. For as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else.

  104. One remains hungry.

  105. And another one gets drunk.

  106. Now, to understand this, we've got to have two things in mind.

  107. But when the church gathered in the first century to celebrate the Lord's Supper,

  108. it was usually part of a much bigger meal,

  109. where they would have a lot more food,

  110. and they would share that with one another.

  111. The other thing we also need to remember is that Sunday was just like any other working day.

  112. For us, it tends to be a holiday.

  113. We don't necessarily go to work.

  114. So for those who were in the church and had very little,

  115. those who weren't wealthy,

  116. well, you see, they had to go off to work on a Sunday.

  117. For others who had a bit more wealth,

  118. well, they could afford not to go to work.

  119. They could take the day off.

  120. Or perhaps they could even finish up a little bit early.

  121. So we can begin to see what was happening as the church gathered.

  122. The wealthy who didn't have to go to work,

  123. well, they all gathered together for their meal.

  124. Some nice roast lamb,

  125. some nice crusty bread,

  126. and a few bottles of fine wine.

  127. There they sat,

  128. feasting away and enjoying themselves.

  129. Then we could imagine throughout the evening,

  130. after a hard day's work,

  131. the less well-off,

  132. well, they would then arrive.

  133. And by this time,

  134. all the food was gone

  135. and half the congregation were drunk.

  136. At some stage in the meal,

  137. a leader somewhere along the line

  138. had given thanks to God for the bread and for the wine

  139. and then promptly finished off the bottle.

  140. It was a mess.

  141. Verse 22.

  142. Don't you have homes to eat and drink in?

  143. Or do you despise the church of God

  144. and humiliate those who have nothing?

  145. What shall I say to you?

  146. Shall I praise you for this?

  147. Certainly not.

  148. Now, we might be sitting comfortably this morning

  149. and think,

  150. that is an absolute disgrace.

  151. I would never do anything like that.

  152. Well, let's just think about it for a minute.

  153. Generally speaking,

  154. we are able to gather at the same time.

  155. Most of us do have a Sunday off

  156. where we don't have to go to our normal work

  157. so we can gather together.

  158. We all sit,

  159. as we are right now,

  160. in a very dignified way,

  161. ready to come and share in the Lord's Supper together.

  162. The perfect family meal.

  163. Or is it?

  164. You see,

  165. we share in the meal,

  166. but as soon as it's finished,

  167. we're out the door

  168. and we forget each other.

  169. Oh, we might invite somebody back to the house for lunch,

  170. but we only invite those that we like.

  171. We certainly don't invite them

  172. because, well,

  173. they're different.

  174. And socially,

  175. if they did come,

  176. it would be just,

  177. you know,

  178. a little bit awkward.

  179. We all take the bread and the wine together,

  180. but as soon as we get home,

  181. the gossip starts.

  182. Can't stand the way they do that.

  183. Oh, we ask God for forgiveness

  184. of all of our sins,

  185. but we hold grudges

  186. and nurse resentment.

  187. We humbly remember

  188. that Christ died for me,

  189. but we also remember

  190. their sin

  191. and what she said

  192. and what he did.

  193. We ask God for grace

  194. and accept his mercy,

  195. but see no reason

  196. why we should bother

  197. to help somebody

  198. who's struggling.

  199. Oh, we're not,

  200. we're not like

  201. that Corinthian church

  202. in the first century.

  203. We'd never turn up

  204. on a Sunday morning

  205. drunk

  206. and celebrate

  207. in the Lord's Supper.

  208. No,

  209. no,

  210. we're much too dignified

  211. for that.

  212. we share

  213. in

  214. the perfect family meal.

  215. Or do we?

  216. Look at verse 22.

  217. Do you despise

  218. the church of God

  219. with our behaviors?

  220. Shall I praise you

  221. for division

  222. that might exist?

  223. for pushing

  224. certain people out

  225. and not letting

  226. other people in?

  227. Certainly not.

  228. Root out

  229. any hint

  230. of sinful division

  231. that exists

  232. within Christ's body.

  233. the second thing.

  234. We must keep central

  235. the remembering

  236. of Christ's death.

  237. As we come to celebrate

  238. the Lord's Supper,

  239. keep central

  240. the remembering

  241. of Christ's death.

  242. Verse 23.

  243. So Paul says,

  244. I received from the Lord

  245. what I also

  246. passed on to you.

  247. You see,

  248. the celebration

  249. of the Lord's Supper

  250. is to be practiced

  251. by every church

  252. in every age.

  253. It's the Lord's way

  254. of making sure

  255. that we do not forget

  256. the death of Christ,

  257. but keep it

  258. at the very center

  259. of our lives.

  260. Verse 26.

  261. For whenever you eat

  262. this bread

  263. and drink this cup,

  264. you proclaim

  265. the Lord's death

  266. until he comes.

  267. Now there's two things

  268. the death of Jesus

  269. should teach us

  270. in the context

  271. of this passage.

  272. The first is this.

  273. This meal

  274. reminds us

  275. that we are united

  276. to God

  277. through the death

  278. of Christ.

  279. We are united

  280. to God

  281. through the death

  282. of Christ.

  283. Look at verse 23 again.

  284. The Lord Jesus,

  285. on the night

  286. he was betrayed,

  287. picture the scene,

  288. took bread

  289. and when he had

  290. given thanks

  291. he broke it

  292. and said,

  293. this is my body

  294. which is for you.

  295. do this

  296. in remembrance

  297. of me.

  298. The bread

  299. that we have here

  300. on this table

  301. is a picture

  302. of the physical

  303. body of Christ

  304. who was torn apart

  305. for you

  306. and for me

  307. when he died

  308. on the cross.

  309. For when Jesus died

  310. he took my sin

  311. and your sin

  312. on himself.

  313. He was punished.

  314. He was broken

  315. for us

  316. so that we

  317. could be forgiven,

  318. reconciled

  319. and united

  320. to our Father God.

  321. Because of the

  322. death of Christ

  323. we can now

  324. enjoy

  325. oneness with God.

  326. No longer

  327. in separation

  328. but united

  329. with God

  330. through the death

  331. of Jesus.

  332. the second thing

  333. it should teach us

  334. is that we are

  335. united

  336. to each other

  337. through the death

  338. of Christ.

  339. Verse 25

  340. In the same way

  341. after supper

  342. he took the cup

  343. saying

  344. this cup

  345. is the new covenant

  346. in my blood.

  347. do this

  348. whenever you

  349. drink it

  350. in remembrance

  351. of me.

  352. The wine

  353. or the juice

  354. as we have it here

  355. is a picture

  356. of the blood

  357. of Christ

  358. that was shed

  359. on the cross.

  360. The blood

  361. of Christ

  362. which seals

  363. and confirms

  364. our new covenant

  365. or that new

  366. everlasting

  367. unbreakable

  368. relationship

  369. with God.

  370. But this new covenant

  371. relationship

  372. that we have

  373. with God

  374. is not just

  375. an individual

  376. personal experience

  377. it is a family

  378. experience

  379. for together

  380. we are

  381. the new covenant

  382. people

  383. brothers

  384. and sisters

  385. in Christ.

  386. In other words

  387. we are united

  388. to each

  389. other.

  390. Paul has

  391. already addressed

  392. this issue

  393. if you go back

  394. to chapter 10

  395. and verse 16.

  396. Have a look there

  397. chapter 10

  398. and verse 16.

  399. look at verse 16

  400. now as we read

  401. we are going to

  402. come across a word

  403. which says

  404. participation

  405. I am going to

  406. translate it as

  407. fellowship

  408. because that is

  409. what it really

  410. means

  411. it is a sharing

  412. in

  413. a fellowship

  414. in

  415. with God

  416. and with others

  417. so verse 16

  418. is not the cup

  419. of thanksgiving

  420. for which we

  421. give thanks

  422. a fellowship

  423. in the blood

  424. of Christ

  425. and is not

  426. the bread

  427. that we break

  428. a fellowship

  429. in the body

  430. of Christ

  431. in other words

  432. that as we eat

  433. and drink

  434. we share

  435. in the fellowship

  436. with God

  437. with his son

  438. we are together

  439. with him

  440. but not only

  441. are we with him

  442. and enjoy him

  443. it also has a

  444. knock on effect

  445. verse 17

  446. because there is

  447. one loaf

  448. we who are many

  449. and we're many

  450. here today

  451. but yet we are

  452. one body

  453. for we all

  454. partake

  455. of one

  456. loaf

  457. so you see

  458. we are not

  459. just united

  460. and have

  461. fellowship

  462. with God

  463. we're also

  464. one body

  465. we have

  466. fellowship

  467. with one

  468. another

  469. so as we

  470. in a minute

  471. will come

  472. to celebrate

  473. the Lord's

  474. Supper

  475. when we

  476. hear

  477. the words

  478. this is

  479. my body

  480. this is

  481. my blood

  482. when we

  483. see the bread

  484. broken

  485. the wine

  486. poured

  487. out

  488. when we

  489. touch

  490. the bread

  491. and hold

  492. the cup

  493. in our

  494. hands

  495. when we

  496. eat

  497. of the bread

  498. and drink

  499. of the wine

  500. all of our

  501. senses are

  502. engaged

  503. to remind

  504. us

  505. so that we

  506. never ever

  507. forget

  508. that we are

  509. united to

  510. God

  511. and as a

  512. consequence

  513. we are now

  514. united

  515. as brothers

  516. and sisters

  517. with each

  518. other

  519. so

  520. root out

  521. any division

  522. in Christ's

  523. body

  524. keep

  525. central

  526. the

  527. remembering

  528. of Christ's

  529. death

  530. and the

  531. third big

  532. thing

  533. as we

  534. come to

  535. celebrate

  536. the Lord's

  537. supper

  538. we need

  539. to prepare

  540. ourselves

  541. to gather

  542. at Christ's

  543. table

  544. now we need

  545. to think

  546. this through

  547. carefully

  548. each one

  549. of us

  550. there's

  551. three ways

  552. I think

  553. this text

  554. is pushing

  555. us to

  556. be prepared

  557. first

  558. personal

  559. examination

  560. we must

  561. examine

  562. the

  563. motives

  564. in our

  565. own

  566. lives

  567. examine

  568. the motives

  569. in our

  570. own

  571. lives

  572. look at

  573. verse 27

  574. of chapter

  575. 11

  576. therefore

  577. whoever

  578. eats the

  579. bread

  580. or drinks

  581. the cup

  582. of the

  583. Lord

  584. in an

  585. unworthy

  586. manner

  587. will be

  588. guilty of

  589. sinning

  590. against

  591. the body

  592. and the

  593. blood

  594. of the

  595. Lord

  596. for us

  597. to come

  598. to this

  599. table

  600. that is

  601. before us

  602. in an

  603. unworthy

  604. manner

  605. means

  606. not to

  607. come

  608. without

  609. sin

  610. it means

  611. to come

  612. with an

  613. unrepentant

  614. heart

  615. an unworthy

  616. manner

  617. means to

  618. come with

  619. an attitude

  620. that ignores

  621. our sin

  622. rather than

  623. confronts

  624. our sin

  625. in other

  626. words as

  627. we come

  628. to the

  629. table

  630. we must

  631. come

  632. ready to

  633. deal with

  634. the sin

  635. in our

  636. lives

  637. confess to

  638. God

  639. what is

  640. really going

  641. on

  642. and ask

  643. God to

  644. change

  645. our sinful

  646. hearts

  647. us

  648. verse 28

  649. a man

  650. or a

  651. woman

  652. ought to

  653. examine

  654. himself

  655. before he

  656. eats of

  657. the bread

  658. and drinks

  659. of the

  660. cup

  661. so before

  662. we even

  663. eat or

  664. drink

  665. check

  666. your

  667. motives

  668. this is

  669. not about

  670. trying to

  671. uncover

  672. every

  673. possible

  674. sin we

  675. may or

  676. may not

  677. have

  678. committed

  679. in the

  680. last

  681. day

  682. this is

  683. about

  684. examining

  685. our

  686. hearts

  687. to see

  688. if I

  689. am really

  690. serious

  691. about

  692. dealing

  693. with my

  694. sinful

  695. nature

  696. am I

  697. ready

  698. to root

  699. out the

  700. grudges

  701. that I

  702. hold

  703. the

  704. anger

  705. the

  706. bitterness

  707. the

  708. unforgiveness

  709. that is

  710. festering

  711. away

  712. am I

  713. ready to

  714. deal with

  715. that

  716. today

  717. do I

  718. truly

  719. desire to

  720. break the

  721. cycle of

  722. destructive

  723. habits

  724. whether it's

  725. pornography

  726. or alcohol

  727. or greed

  728. do I

  729. really want

  730. to root

  731. those out

  732. of my

  733. life

  734. will I

  735. surrender

  736. what takes

  737. the place

  738. of Christ

  739. whatever the

  740. cost

  741. be it

  742. my career

  743. or my

  744. relationships

  745. with one

  746. another

  747. before we

  748. eat of

  749. this bread

  750. or drink

  751. of this

  752. juice

  753. examine

  754. our

  755. motives

  756. love

  757. love

  758. the

  759. second

  760. thing

  761. we need

  762. to do

  763. in

  764. preparation

  765. is to

  766. look at

  767. our

  768. family

  769. relationships

  770. we

  771. must

  772. sort

  773. out

  774. any

  775. broken

  776. relationship

  777. with

  778. each

  779. other

  780. verse

  781. 29

  782. for

  783. anyone

  784. who

  785. eats

  786. and

  787. drinks

  788. without

  789. recognizing

  790. the body

  791. of the

  792. Lord

  793. eats

  794. and

  795. drinks

  796. judgment

  797. on

  798. himself

  799. now

  800. when it

  801. says

  802. there about

  803. recognizing

  804. the body

  805. of the

  806. Lord

  807. the body

  808. of the

  809. Lord

  810. not only

  811. means

  812. Christ

  813. himself

  814. but

  815. the body

  816. of Christ

  817. the church

  818. so

  819. if I

  820. eat

  821. or

  822. drink

  823. without

  824. recognizing

  825. the

  826. church

  827. then

  828. I

  829. eat

  830. or

  831. drink

  832. judgment

  833. on

  834. myself

  835. so

  836. if I

  837. have

  838. fallen

  839. out

  840. with

  841. another

  842. brother

  843. or

  844. sister

  845. in

  846. the

  847. Lord

  848. I

  849. need

  850. to

  851. sort

  852. that

  853. out

  854. before

  855. coming

  856. to

  857. the

  858. table

  859. I

  860. can't

  861. eat

  862. of

  863. this

  864. bread

  865. and

  866. thank

  867. God

  868. for

  869. dying

  870. for

  871. me

  872. and

  873. at

  874. the

  875. same

  876. time

  877. pretend

  878. that

  879. the

  880. way

  881. I

  882. spoke

  883. to

  884. my

  885. brother

  886. or

  887. sister

  888. doesn't

  889. matter

  890. I

  891. can't

  892. sit

  893. here

  894. and

  895. drink

  896. of

  897. this

  898. cup

  899. and

  900. ask

  901. God

  902. for

  903. the

  904. forgiveness

  905. in

  906. my

  907. life

  908. and

  909. at

  910. the

  911. same

  912. time

  913. ignore

  914. the

  915. way

  916. I

  917. treat

  918. certain

  919. people

  920. because

  921. they're

  922. not

  923. like

  924. me

  925. you

  926. see

  927. coming

  928. to

  929. this

  930. table

  931. is

  932. not

  933. a

  934. private

  935. personal

  936. experience

  937. it

  938. is

  939. a

  940. family

  941. meal

  942. and

  943. we

  944. cannot

  945. start

  946. this

  947. meal

  948. without

  949. first

  950. putting

  951. right

  952. what

  953. is

  954. wrong

  955. so

  956. that

  957. means

  958. that

  959. it

  960. might

  961. be

  962. that

  963. what

  964. we

  965. have

  966. to

  967. do

  968. is

  969. we

  970. need

  971. to

  972. be

  973. calling

  974. somebody

  975. during

  976. the

  977. week

  978. and

  979. asking

  980. look

  981. can

  982. I

  983. meet

  984. up

  985. with

  986. you

  987. not

  988. texting

  989. that's

  990. not

  991. reconciliation

  992. we

  993. need

  994. to

  995. come

  996. face

  997. to

  998. face

  999. say

  1000. sorry

  1001. where

  1002. we

  1003. need

  1004. to

  1005. say

  1006. sorry

  1007. ask

  1008. for

  1009. forgiveness

  1010. before

  1011. we

  1012. eat

  1013. or

  1014. drink

  1015. we

  1016. need

  1017. to

  1018. sort

  1019. out

  1020. our

  1021. family

  1022. relationships

  1023. so

  1024. in

  1025. preparation

  1026. personal

  1027. examination

  1028. think

  1029. about

  1030. our

  1031. family

  1032. relationships

  1033. and

  1034. the

  1035. third

  1036. we

  1037. need

  1038. to

  1039. listen

  1040. to

  1041. God's

  1042. serious

  1043. warning

  1044. look

  1045. at

  1046. verse

  1047. 30

  1048. that

  1049. is

  1050. why

  1051. many

  1052. among

  1053. you

  1054. are

  1055. weak

  1056. and

  1057. sick

  1058. and

  1059. a

  1060. number

  1061. of

  1062. you

  1063. have

  1064. fallen

  1065. asleep

  1066. literally

  1067. people

  1068. have

  1069. died

  1070. in

  1071. the

  1072. church

  1073. in

  1074. Corinth

  1075. this

  1076. is

  1077. how

  1078. seriously

  1079. God

  1080. takes

  1081. sin

  1082. and

  1083. how

  1084. deeply

  1085. he

  1086. loves

  1087. his

  1088. church

  1089. God

  1090. will

  1091. not

  1092. put up

  1093. with

  1094. believers

  1095. who

  1096. persistently

  1097. remain

  1098. unrepentant

  1099. God

  1100. will

  1101. not

  1102. tolerate

  1103. broken

  1104. relationships

  1105. that remain

  1106. undealt

  1107. with

  1108. you see

  1109. if we

  1110. don't

  1111. take

  1112. sin

  1113. seriously

  1114. if we

  1115. don't

  1116. deal

  1117. with

  1118. broken

  1119. relationships

  1120. well

  1121. then God

  1122. will

  1123. verse

  1124. 31

  1125. if

  1126. we

  1127. judged

  1128. ourselves

  1129. we

  1130. would

  1131. not

  1132. come

  1133. under

  1134. judgment

  1135. in

  1136. other

  1137. words

  1138. if

  1139. we

  1140. did

  1141. what

  1142. we

  1143. were

  1144. meant

  1145. to

  1146. do

  1147. then

  1148. there

  1149. would

  1150. be

  1151. no

  1152. need

  1153. for

  1154. God

  1155. to

  1156. intervene

  1157. and

  1158. judge

  1159. us

  1160. now

  1161. as we

  1162. read

  1163. this

  1164. I

  1165. know

  1166. that

  1167. it

  1168. can

  1169. cause

  1170. great

  1171. concern

  1172. and

  1173. it

  1174. can

  1175. trouble

  1176. us

  1177. unnecessarily

  1178. but

  1179. we

  1180. need

  1181. to

  1182. understand

  1183. clearly

  1184. what

  1185. they're

  1186. saying

  1187. so

  1188. let

  1189. me

  1190. just

  1191. say

  1192. two

  1193. things

  1194. about

  1195. this

  1196. warning

  1197. in

  1198. verses

  1199. 30

  1200. to

  1201. 32

  1202. the

  1203. first

  1204. thing

  1205. I

  1206. want

  1207. to

  1208. say

  1209. to

  1210. us

  1211. is

  1212. this

  1213. not

  1214. every

  1215. illness

  1216. ache

  1217. or

  1218. pain

  1219. is

  1220. a

  1221. sign

  1222. of

  1223. God's

  1224. judgment

  1225. on

  1226. our

  1227. life

  1228. because

  1229. of

  1230. some

  1231. sin

  1232. in

  1233. our

  1234. life

  1235. that

  1236. would

  1237. be

  1238. very

  1239. wrong

  1240. to

  1241. say

  1242. that

  1243. we

  1244. may

  1245. have

  1246. repented

  1247. of

  1248. sin

  1249. we

  1250. may

  1251. know

  1252. the

  1253. joy

  1254. of

  1255. forgiveness

  1256. we

  1257. may

  1258. be

  1259. in

  1260. right

  1261. relationship

  1262. with

  1263. each

  1264. other

  1265. and

  1266. in

  1267. right

  1268. relationship

  1269. with

  1270. God

  1271. but

  1272. you

  1273. know

  1274. what

  1275. we

  1276. can

  1277. still

  1278. have

  1279. aches

  1280. and

  1281. pains

  1282. and

  1283. be

  1284. sick

  1285. not

  1286. every

  1287. sickness

  1288. is

  1289. because

  1290. of

  1291. sin

  1292. second

  1293. it

  1294. may

  1295. be

  1296. that

  1297. God

  1298. allows

  1299. or

  1300. uses

  1301. some

  1302. illness

  1303. in

  1304. our

  1305. life

  1306. to

  1307. awaken

  1308. us

  1309. to

  1310. our

  1311. unrepentant

  1312. hearts

  1313. look at

  1314. verse

  1315. 32

  1316. when

  1317. we are

  1318. judged

  1319. by the

  1320. Lord

  1321. we are

  1322. being

  1323. disciplined

  1324. so that

  1325. we will

  1326. not be

  1327. condemned

  1328. with the

  1329. world

  1330. in

  1331. other

  1332. words

  1333. God

  1334. can

  1335. allow

  1336. me

  1337. to

  1338. be

  1339. weak

  1340. or

  1341. sick

  1342. in

  1343. some

  1344. way

  1345. so

  1346. it

  1347. causes

  1348. me

  1349. to

  1350. stop

  1351. and

  1352. face

  1353. up

  1354. to

  1355. ignored

  1356. sin

  1357. or

  1358. a

  1359. broken

  1360. relationship

  1361. this

  1362. is

  1363. not

  1364. a

  1365. sign

  1366. of

  1367. God's

  1368. anger

  1369. but

  1370. a sign

  1371. of

  1372. his

  1373. love

  1374. and

  1375. mercy

  1376. upon

  1377. his

  1378. church

  1379. look at

  1380. the end

  1381. of verse

  1382. 32

  1383. so that

  1384. we

  1385. will

  1386. not

  1387. be

  1388. condemned

  1389. with

  1390. the

  1391. world

  1392. so that

  1393. we

  1394. would

  1395. not

  1396. be

  1397. separated

  1398. from him

  1399. for an

  1400. eternity

  1401. God

  1402. would

  1403. intervene

  1404. in our

  1405. lives

  1406. and cause

  1407. us to

  1408. stop

  1409. and check

  1410. God

  1411. loves his

  1412. church

  1413. and he

  1414. loves us

  1415. enough

  1416. not to

  1417. leave us

  1418. in the

  1419. mess of

  1420. unrepentant

  1421. undealt

  1422. with

  1423. sin

  1424. so

  1425. before

  1426. we

  1427. eat

  1428. of

  1429. this

  1430. bread

  1431. and

  1432. drink

  1433. of

  1434. this

  1435. juice

  1436. listen

  1437. to

  1438. God's

  1439. serious

  1440. warnings

  1441. we

  1442. are

  1443. together

  1444. here

  1445. to

  1446. celebrate

  1447. in the

  1448. Lord's

  1449. supper

  1450. together

  1451. look at

  1452. verse

  1453. 33

  1454. so

  1455. then my

  1456. brothers

  1457. and

  1458. sisters

  1459. when

  1460. you

  1461. come

  1462. together

  1463. to

  1464. eat

  1465. wait

  1466. for

  1467. each

  1468. other

  1469. this

  1470. is not

  1471. some

  1472. private

  1473. personal

  1474. experience

  1475. where we

  1476. come in

  1477. for our

  1478. top up

  1479. of grace

  1480. and to

  1481. get a

  1482. little

  1483. bit of

  1484. forgiveness

  1485. and then

  1486. go off

  1487. and do

  1488. whatever

  1489. we like

  1490. and forget

  1491. each

  1492. other

  1493. no

  1494. this

  1495. is a

  1496. deeply

  1497. intimate

  1498. family

  1499. meal

  1500. where we

  1501. remember

  1502. that through

  1503. the death

  1504. of Jesus

  1505. we are

  1506. united

  1507. to God

  1508. and we

  1509. are united

  1510. to

  1511. one

  1512. another

  1513. it is

  1514. the place

  1515. where we

  1516. can come

  1517. openly

  1518. and freely

  1519. and come

  1520. and receive

  1521. the forgiveness

  1522. to know

  1523. that cleansing

  1524. and the

  1525. washing away

  1526. of our guilt

  1527. and shame

  1528. to come

  1529. and do

  1530. business

  1531. with God

  1532. to change

  1533. our hearts

  1534. to be more

  1535. like him

  1536. we are

  1537. going to

  1538. continue

  1539. in celebration

  1540. of the

  1541. Lord's

  1542. Supper

  1543. we are

  1544. going to

  1545. sing a

  1546. song

  1547. you can

  1548. remain

  1549. seated

  1550. as we

  1551. sing

  1552. we sang

  1553. it

  1554. I think

  1555. even

  1556. last week

  1557. but I

  1558. think it is

  1559. appropriate

  1560. for us

  1561. to sing

  1562. we will

  1563. sing it

  1564. a couple

  1565. times

  1566. as we

  1567. are

  1568. gathered

  1569. Jesus

  1570. is

  1571. here

  1572. he is

  1573. present

  1574. with us

  1575. by his

  1576. spirit

  1577. and his

  1578. presence

  1579. with us

  1580. is

  1581. demonstrated

  1582. in the

  1583. symbols

  1584. of the

  1585. bread

  1586. and the

  1587. juice

  1588. reminding

  1589. us

  1590. that

  1591. Christ

  1592. has died

  1593. for us

  1594. so we will

  1595. remain

  1596. seated

  1597. as we

  1598. sing

  1599. and

  1600. him

  1601. in

  1602. his

  1603. bridge

  1604. he

  1605. and

  1606. he
