  1. Well, let's pray and ask for the Holy Spirit's help as we look at this together.

  2. Father, we thank you for your word.

  3. Lord, we thank you for this letter of 1 Corinthians and all that it teaches us about the gathering of your people.

  4. We pray that we today, as a local church here, as believers meeting together,

  5. we would know your help so that we may better become the church that you call us to be.

  6. That we would be a people who serve one another, filled with the power of your Spirit,

  7. all for the glory and all for the honour of the Lord Jesus.

  8. So please help us now, we pray.

  9. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. Well, on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being not so good and 10 being excellent,

  11. how spiritual would you say you are between 1 and 10?

  12. What would you rate yourself?

  13. Well, let's put it another way.

  14. What is the sign of a spiritual church?

  15. Is Carigoline Baptist Church a spiritual church?

  16. Well, the church in Corinth thought themselves to be very spiritual.

  17. And it seems that the way to decide who is more spiritual than another,

  18. or which church was more spiritual than another, was by their particular gift.

  19. So the more spectacular the gift, well, the more spiritual that you are.

  20. So if I have the gift of healing, well, then I'm far more spiritual than you if you just welcome at the door.

  21. Or if you have the gift of miraculous powers,

  22. then you're more spiritual than the person who's just served tea or coffee.

  23. You see, the church in Corinth had confused spiritual gifts with true spirituality.

  24. And the particular issue, it seems, over chapters 12 and 14,

  25. is the issue of speaking in tongues.

  26. And if you could speak in tongues, you were super spiritual.

  27. Speaking in tongues, as we see in chapter 13.

  28. Verse 1, if I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,

  29. is it the gift of an unlearned language or another kind of language,

  30. like French or Spanish or Japanese or something like that?

  31. Well, if you could speak in tongues, you were part of the spiritual elite.

  32. And obviously, if you couldn't, well, then you were spiritually inferior.

  33. You were a second-class kind of citizen.

  34. And all of this was causing great confusion and division as the church in Corinth gathered together.

  35. And I'm sure if we were to ask each one of us here,

  36. there would be a variety of opinions and no doubt confusion about gifts.

  37. And it seems, therefore, that this all needs to be corrected.

  38. So, in chapter 12, verse 1, starting, if you like, a new topic in his letter,

  39. chapter 12, verse 1, he says,

  40. Now, about spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters.

  41. Now, some of your Bibles, if you're using an ESV,

  42. you might have a little small letter beside spiritual gift,

  43. and at the bottom of the page it might say spiritual persons.

  44. So, it can actually be translated both ways.

  45. So, about spiritual gifts, or about those who think themselves to be spiritual people.

  46. Or we could group it all together and say,

  47. Now, about spiritual matters, brothers and sisters.

  48. I do not want you to be ignorant.

  49. So, let me show you, he goes on to say,

  50. let me show you then what true spirituality is all about.

  51. It's not how spectacular your gifts are,

  52. but how you are using your gifts.

  53. So, chapter 13, verse 1,

  54. as he deals with this issue of speaking in tongues,

  55. he says,

  56. If I speak in tongues of men and of angels,

  57. but if I don't have the gift of love,

  58. well, I'm only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

  59. I'm just making a whole lot of noise,

  60. and nobody understands what I'm saying.

  61. Or chapter 14, verse 2,

  62. For if anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men,

  63. but to God,

  64. indeed no one understands him,

  65. he utters mysteries with his spirit.

  66. Verse 4,

  67. But he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,

  68. but he who prophesies edifies the church.

  69. Verse 18,

  70. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you,

  71. but in the church,

  72. so when the church gathers together,

  73. I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others

  74. than ten thousand words in a tongue.

  75. So you see,

  76. true spirituality isn't so much about the particular gift,

  77. or how spectacular it may seem to other people,

  78. it's about how you use your gift to build up the church.

  79. That's the measure of true spirituality.

  80. So chapters 12 to 14 are not so much about gifts,

  81. and how do I figure out what my particular gift is,

  82. but how we use our gifts in the context of the local church.

  83. So this morning we're going to look at three marks of a spiritual church,

  84. as chapter 12 through verses 1 to 11 are like a foundation

  85. to the remaining verses up to chapter 14 and the end.

  86. So here's the first mark.

  87. A spiritual church submits to Jesus as Lord.

  88. Verse 1 of chapter 12.

  89. Now about spiritual matters,

  90. spiritual things,

  91. brothers and sisters,

  92. I do not want you to be ignorant.

  93. For you know that when you were pagans,

  94. when you were not believers in Christ,

  95. somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

  96. You were off down at the pagan temple,

  97. worshipping other gods.

  98. Rather than Jesus being your Lord and Saviour,

  99. you had turned entrusted to idols.

  100. Idols, mute idols,

  101. those that couldn't even talk or do anything for you.

  102. They can't even save you,

  103. but yet he says you followed them.

  104. Of course we today mightn't go to our pagan temple,

  105. but we've all got our idols and our gods that we follow.

  106. We look to our work,

  107. we look to our children or our family,

  108. we look to money as things that are most important,

  109. as things that can save us.

  110. But in reality,

  111. they are like a mute idol.

  112. They can do nothing for us.

  113. But then,

  114. for these people,

  115. everything changed, didn't it?

  116. Look at verse 3.

  117. Therefore I tell you that no one

  118. who is speaking by the Spirit of God says,

  119. Jesus be cursed.

  120. And no one can say,

  121. Jesus is Lord,

  122. except by the Holy Spirit.

  123. In other words,

  124. these pagan people,

  125. who had been down at the local temple,

  126. who perhaps as part of their so-called worship,

  127. used to curse Jesus,

  128. have now been radically changed,

  129. and now rather than saying,

  130. Jesus be cursed,

  131. they can now say,

  132. Jesus is Lord.

  133. We submit to Jesus.

  134. And how did that change all come about?

  135. Well, look at the end of verse 3.

  136. No one can say,

  137. Jesus is Lord,

  138. except by the Holy Spirit.

  139. Do you remember how Paul described his visit

  140. when he first came to Corinth?

  141. Have a look back to chapter 2,

  142. verses 4 to 5.

  143. Chapter 2, verses 4 to 5.

  144. He describes here how it was

  145. when he first arrived in the city of Corinth,

  146. chapter 2, verse 4.

  147. And he tells us there,

  148. he says,

  149. my message,

  150. and my preaching,

  151. so as he explained the cross of Jesus Christ,

  152. he says,

  153. we're not with wise and persuasive words,

  154. but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,

  155. so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom,

  156. but on God's power.

  157. You see,

  158. it is the Holy Spirit

  159. that enables people

  160. and causes people

  161. to turn and accept Jesus Christ as Lord.

  162. And if you accept Jesus Christ as Lord,

  163. the only reason you can

  164. is because of the Spirit's work in your life.

  165. So look at chapter 2, verse 14.

  166. The person without the Spirit

  167. does not accept the things

  168. that come from the Spirit of God,

  169. for they are foolishness to him,

  170. and he cannot understand them

  171. because they are spiritually discerned.

  172. You see,

  173. it is the work of the Spirit

  174. that causes us

  175. to cry out and submit to Jesus as Lord.

  176. Go back with me to chapter 12.

  177. So you see,

  178. if you are a Christian here this morning,

  179. you are a spiritual person.

  180. The Holy Spirit has changed you.

  181. So your spirituality

  182. is not dependent on the gift you might have,

  183. but that the fact that you have been changed

  184. and you are now convinced

  185. that Jesus Christ is Lord of your life,

  186. that he now rules your life.

  187. So true spirituality

  188. isn't about your ability to speak in tongues

  189. or give a message of wisdom

  190. or heal the sick.

  191. It is about Christ being Lord of your life.

  192. Now, if Jesus is Lord of our lives

  193. and if Jesus is Lord of this church,

  194. then we will bow in humble submission

  195. to the authority of the Lord's Word.

  196. So have a look at chapter 14, verse 37.

  197. Chapter 14, verse 37.

  198. This is as he comes to a conclusion

  199. of his whole argument

  200. and his whole correcting

  201. of what had been going on in the church.

  202. So verse 37, he says,

  203. if anybody thinks he is a prophet

  204. or spiritually gifted,

  205. if any of you think you are

  206. a super spiritual person,

  207. well then let him acknowledge

  208. that what I am writing to you

  209. is the Lord's command.

  210. If he ignores this,

  211. in other words,

  212. if he ignores the Lord's word,

  213. he himself will be ignored.

  214. So you see,

  215. to say the words,

  216. Jesus is Lord,

  217. is not just a verbal consent.

  218. It is to live your life

  219. under the authority

  220. of the Lord's command

  221. to live under his word,

  222. under scripture.

  223. So that means as we step

  224. into this whole subject

  225. and topic of spiritual gifts,

  226. well we need to submit

  227. our own personal experience

  228. and our own church traditions,

  229. whatever they may be,

  230. we must submit them

  231. to the authority

  232. of the Lord's command,

  233. scripture itself.

  234. We are to let God's word

  235. shape our understanding

  236. and practice of God's gifts

  237. to us.

  238. It's not what I think

  239. or what you think,

  240. but what does God say?

  241. So first,

  242. a spiritual church

  243. will submit to Jesus

  244. as Lord.

  245. Second mark

  246. of a spiritual church

  247. is that the spiritual church

  248. will celebrate

  249. a diversity of gifts.

  250. So chapter 12, verse 4.

  251. Chapter 12, verse 4.

  252. There are different kinds of gifts,

  253. but the same spirit.

  254. There are different kinds

  255. of service,

  256. but the same Lord.

  257. There are different kinds

  258. of working,

  259. but the same God

  260. works all of them

  261. in all people.

  262. God in his goodness

  263. has given to his church

  264. gifts,

  265. services,

  266. workings.

  267. In other words,

  268. we're not all clones

  269. sitting here together

  270. doing the same thing.

  271. there is a vast variety

  272. within the body

  273. of the church.

  274. And an example

  275. is provided for us,

  276. isn't it,

  277. in verses 8 to 10.

  278. And we can get very fixated

  279. with this list

  280. and look at all these

  281. various gifts

  282. and wonder,

  283. well, what do they all mean?

  284. Well, as I've been reading

  285. and thinking afresh

  286. about this through the week,

  287. it seems that we don't know

  288. what all of them

  289. actually do mean

  290. because some of them

  291. only appear here

  292. and they're not even explained

  293. and we're not even told

  294. what they are.

  295. So it's sometimes hard

  296. to discern exactly

  297. what each gift is.

  298. However, having said that,

  299. let me just go through the list

  300. and look at each

  301. of these gifts

  302. and suggest a few things

  303. with caution.

  304. So, verse 8,

  305. to one there is given

  306. the Spirit,

  307. sorry, verse 8,

  308. to one there is given

  309. through the Spirit

  310. the message of wisdom.

  311. So what's the message

  312. of wisdom?

  313. Is it a word

  314. about the wisdom

  315. of the cross

  316. which saves people

  317. that he was talking about

  318. back in chapter 1?

  319. The wisdom,

  320. the power of God

  321. to save people?

  322. To another,

  323. verse 8,

  324. there is the message

  325. of knowledge.

  326. Is it a word

  327. of knowledge

  328. whereby someone

  329. can give us

  330. an understanding

  331. from the Word of God

  332. as to who God is

  333. and how he works?

  334. Verse 9,

  335. to another faith

  336. by the same Spirit.

  337. Is it the conviction

  338. or the confidence

  339. that God's purposes

  340. are going to be

  341. worked out

  342. in a certain way

  343. and so in faith

  344. we step out

  345. trusting God?

  346. To another,

  347. gifts of healing

  348. by that one Spirit.

  349. I think that is

  350. straightforward

  351. to some extent,

  352. healing those

  353. who are sick.

  354. But let me make

  355. just one comment

  356. on that.

  357. The emphasis

  358. here is on

  359. the person

  360. who does

  361. the healing.

  362. Not the person

  363. who is receiving

  364. the healing.

  365. So sometimes

  366. we say,

  367. oh well the reason

  368. you're not healed

  369. is because of your faith.

  370. You don't have

  371. enough faith.

  372. Well no,

  373. actually the emphasis

  374. is on the healer.

  375. So if you're not healed

  376. it's not your fault,

  377. it's the person,

  378. well they don't have

  379. the gift.

  380. Working on.

  381. Verse 10,

  382. to another,

  383. miraculous powers.

  384. Supernatural events

  385. or workings

  386. to fulfill

  387. the purposes of God.

  388. Perhaps to provide

  389. something

  390. or to change

  391. a certain circumstance.

  392. To another,

  393. prophecy.

  394. We'll come across

  395. this more so

  396. in chapter 14

  397. which I think

  398. is clear.

  399. It's speaking

  400. God's word

  401. into the context

  402. of our lives

  403. to build up

  404. and encourage.

  405. To another,

  406. verse 10,

  407. distinguishing

  408. between the spirits.

  409. Is it the ability

  410. to discern

  411. what is from God

  412. so that it protects

  413. the church family

  414. from those

  415. who do not

  416. speak the truth?

  417. And then to another,

  418. speaking in different

  419. kinds of tongues.

  420. Well,

  421. what is tongues?

  422. Is it,

  423. chapter 13,

  424. verse 1,

  425. if I speak

  426. in the tongues

  427. of men?

  428. Is that a known

  429. language,

  430. as we said earlier,

  431. like French

  432. or Spanish

  433. or sign language?

  434. Or is it

  435. the language

  436. of angels?

  437. So something

  438. that is unlearned

  439. and something

  440. we just don't know

  441. what it is.

  442. And then finally,

  443. to still another,

  444. the interpretation

  445. interpretation

  446. of tongues.

  447. Interpreting

  448. what somebody

  449. has spoken

  450. in tongues

  451. to encourage

  452. and build up

  453. the church.

  454. Now,

  455. having gone

  456. through that,

  457. part of it

  458. is just an exercise

  459. to think about

  460. these gifts.

  461. But I think

  462. the reason why

  463. they're listed here

  464. is not so much

  465. to get us bogged

  466. down into

  467. what is the meaning

  468. of each one,

  469. but to help us

  470. see that,

  471. look,

  472. look at the gifts here.

  473. There is a huge

  474. diversity of gifts

  475. within the church.

  476. In fact,

  477. some of you

  478. may know

  479. that within

  480. the New Testament

  481. there are four

  482. other places

  483. where we have

  484. a list

  485. of different gifts.

  486. One of them

  487. being 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12:28

  488. 12 verse 28.

  489. We have a few

  490. more gifts.

  491. Or in Romans 12

  492. and Ephesians 4

  493. and 1 Peter 4.

  494. And if we had time

  495. to compare

  496. all of these,

  497. we would see

  498. that, well,

  499. they're actually

  500. all generally

  501. different.

  502. Each list

  503. is somewhat

  504. different.

  505. Let's have a look

  506. at one of these lists.

  507. Go back to Romans 12.

  508. It's the book

  509. just before

  510. 1 Corinthians.

  511. Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12:6–8

  512. verses 6 to 8.

  513. Romans 12

  514. 6 to 8.

  515. 1 Corinthians 12

  516. 1 Corinthians 12

  517. 1 Corinthians 12

  518. Same author,

  519. but writing

  520. to a different

  521. church.

  522. Here's what he says.

  523. Verse 6,

  524. We have

  525. different gifts

  526. according to

  527. the grace

  528. given us.

  529. If a person's

  530. gift is

  531. prophesying,

  532. well,

  533. let him use it

  534. in proportion

  535. to his faith

  536. or according

  537. to the faith.

  538. If it is

  539. serving,

  540. let him serve.

  541. If it is

  542. teaching,

  543. let him teach.

  544. If it is

  545. encouraging,

  546. let him encourage.

  547. If it is

  548. contributing to

  549. the needs of

  550. others,

  551. let him give

  552. generously.

  553. If it's

  554. leadership,

  555. well,

  556. let him govern

  557. diligently.

  558. If it is

  559. showing mercy,

  560. let him do it

  561. cheerfully.

  562. prophecy.

  563. Now,

  564. I wonder if

  565. you noticed

  566. what was

  567. common between

  568. the list in

  569. 1 Corinthians

  570. and the list

  571. in Romans.

  572. Did you see

  573. anything that

  574. was common?

  575. There's actually

  576. only one.

  577. That is the

  578. gift of

  579. prophecy.

  580. The rest are

  581. all different.

  582. So what are we

  583. to say when we

  584. compare the two?

  585. Does that mean

  586. to say that the

  587. church in Corinth

  588. is far more

  589. spiritual than

  590. the church in

  591. Rome?

  592. Or is the

  593. church in Rome

  594. more spiritual

  595. than the church

  596. in Corinth?

  597. Does that mean

  598. to say that the

  599. church in Corinth

  600. didn't have the

  601. gift of healing?

  602. Or that the

  603. church in Corinth

  604. didn't have the

  605. gift of leadership?

  606. In fact,

  607. as we go through

  608. Scripture and look

  609. at all these lists,

  610. some gifts are not

  611. even mentioned.

  612. So in all of the

  613. lists when we

  614. compare them,

  615. there isn't the

  616. gift of music.

  617. Is music a gift?

  618. Is singing a gift?

  619. Quite clearly, I know

  620. some are better than

  621. others.

  622. We know that.

  623. What about DIY?

  624. Fixing the wheels on

  625. the screens.

  626. Can you all do that?

  627. What about art?

  628. What about IT when it

  629. comes to computers?

  630. Are these not all

  631. different kinds of

  632. gifts?

  633. gifts?

  634. So I think when we're

  635. looking at 1 Corinthians

  636. 12, if we go back

  637. there, this is not an

  638. exhaustive list of the

  639. gifts.

  640. This is not the one

  641. master list that we

  642. shape our whole life

  643. and our whole church

  644. by.

  645. It's representative of

  646. the kinds of gifts that

  647. there are within the

  648. church.

  649. Does each church have

  650. every gift?

  651. I don't think it does.

  652. Does each person have

  653. the same gift?

  654. I don't think they do.

  655. Does each church have

  656. the same gift all of

  657. the time?

  658. No, they don't.

  659. I think it changes.

  660. The point is, there is

  661. a diversity of gifts.

  662. Even when we look at

  663. 1 Peter 4, he doesn't

  664. even go into a big list.

  665. He just says, gifts of

  666. speaking, gifts of

  667. serving.

  668. Now, this diversity of

  669. gifts is all part of

  670. God's good design for

  671. the local church.

  672. Have a look at 1

    1 Corinthians 12:11

  673. Corinthians 12, verse

  674. 11.

  675. 1 Corinthians 12, verse

    1 Corinthians 12:11

  676. 11.

  677. All these, all these

  678. gifts, these diversity

  679. of gifts, are the work

  680. of the one and the same

  681. spirit.

  682. And he gives them

  683. to each one

  684. just as

  685. God

  686. determines.

  687. Or just as

  688. God

  689. wills.

  690. So you see,

  691. within this diversity

  692. of gifts,

  693. I don't get to decide

  694. what gift I might have.

  695. It's not like we all

  696. go walking into

  697. the sweetie shop

  698. and we're all

  699. there to pick out

  700. our favourite

  701. sweeties down in

  702. Antinelli's.

  703. That we kind of go

  704. into the gift shop

  705. and we come before

  706. God and we go,

  707. mmm, healing.

  708. I think I'd like

  709. that one.

  710. But you know what?

  711. Hold off on the gift

  712. of financial giving.

  713. I don't really like

  714. that one.

  715. Gift of miraculous

  716. powers.

  717. I'll take that,

  718. but don't want the

  719. gift of cleaning

  720. the loose.

  721. Hold on that one

  722. too.

  723. You see,

  724. it's not up to us

  725. to decide

  726. what gift I have

  727. or what gifts

  728. this church

  729. should have.

  730. It's not for me

  731. to determine

  732. or for you

  733. to determine.

  734. God gives

  735. to his church

  736. different kind

  737. of gifts,

  738. end of verse 11,

  739. as he

  740. determines.

  741. We can't

  742. manipulate God

  743. into getting

  744. what we want.

  745. It doesn't matter

  746. how hard I pray

  747. or what I do.

  748. This is God's

  749. church and he is

  750. Lord over the

  751. church.

  752. So that means

  753. as a church

  754. we should not

  755. be thinking,

  756. you know,

  757. am I lacking

  758. some spiritual

  759. gift?

  760. Is there something

  761. wrong with me?

  762. We should never

  763. think that God

  764. gets it wrong.

  765. Do you think

  766. God has designed

  767. his church

  768. wrong?

  769. Just as he

  770. has given us

  771. the gift of

  772. salvation,

  773. God determines

  774. and gives the

  775. gift of these

  776. diverse gifts.

  777. So second,

  778. the spiritual

  779. church celebrates

  780. a diversity

  781. of gifts

  782. as God

  783. chooses to

  784. give.

  785. The third

  786. mark,

  787. a spiritual

  788. church

  789. builds up

  790. the church

  791. body.

  792. Now while we

  793. have a diversity

  794. of gifts,

  795. they all come

  796. from the same

  797. source.

  798. Look at verses

  799. four and five

  800. again.

  801. Diversity

  802. but yet

  803. unity

  804. all from the

  805. same source.

  806. Let's read

  807. verse four

  808. again.

  809. There's different

  810. kinds of

  811. gifts

  812. but the

  813. same

  814. spirit.

  815. there are

  816. different

  817. kinds of

  818. service

  819. but it's

  820. the same

  821. Lord.

  822. There are

  823. different kinds

  824. of working

  825. but the

  826. same God

  827. works all

  828. of them

  829. in all

  830. men.

  831. So do you

  832. see there?

  833. Same spirit,

  834. same Lord,

  835. same God.

  836. Father,

  837. Son and

  838. Spirit.

  839. Spirit.

  840. It's the

  841. Trinity.

  842. There's a

  843. diversity

  844. within the

  845. Trinity.

  846. Isn't there

  847. Father,

  848. Son and

  849. Spirit?

  850. But yet

  851. they're united

  852. together

  853. in one's

  854. purpose.

  855. They are of

  856. the one

  857. source.

  858. So the

  859. same point

  860. is underlined

  861. as we go

  862. through

  863. verses eight

  864. through to

  865. ten.

  866. It's about

  867. the same

  868. spirit,

  869. the one

  870. spirit.

  871. All gifts

  872. come from

  873. the one

  874. Godhead.

  875. Now if our

  876. gifts all

  877. come from

  878. the one

  879. source,

  880. then they

  881. must also

  882. have the

  883. one purpose.

  884. For God

  885. is united

  886. in his

  887. one purpose.

  888. Verse

  889. seven.

  890. Now to

  891. each one

  892. the

  893. manifestation

  894. of the

  895. Spirit is

  896. given for

  897. the common

  898. good.

  899. So the

  900. purpose of

  901. our gifts

  902. is not to

  903. gain promotion

  904. or popularity.

  905. They are

  906. for the

  907. common

  908. good.

  909. They are

  910. for the

  911. building up

  912. of God's

  913. church.

  914. And he

  915. gets on to

  916. this again

  917. in chapter

  918. 14.

  919. Just have

  920. a sneak

  921. look ahead.

  922. Chapter

  923. 14,

  924. verse 12.

  925. In the

  926. middle of

  927. verse 12,

  928. he says,

  929. since you

  930. are eager

  931. to have

  932. spiritual

  933. gifts,

  934. try to

  935. excel in

  936. gifts that

  937. what?

  938. Build up

  939. the church.

  940. Or

  941. verse 26,

  942. as he

  943. gets to

  944. the

  945. conclusion

  946. of

  947. talking

  948. all

  949. about

  950. it.

  951. What

  952. shall

  953. we

  954. say

  955. then,

  956. brothers

  957. and

  958. sisters,

  959. when we

  960. come

  961. together,

  962. everyone

  963. has a

  964. hymn,

  965. one word

  966. of

  967. instruction,

  968. a

  969. revelation,

  970. a

  971. tongue,

  972. or an

  973. interpretation.

  974. All of

  975. these must

  976. be done

  977. for the

  978. strengthening

  979. of the

  980. church.

  981. So the

  982. purpose of

  983. these diverse

  984. gifts,

  985. which come

  986. from the

  987. one source,

  988. God

  989. himself,

  990. is so

  991. that we

  992. would serve

  993. one another

  994. for the

  995. common good,

  996. for the

  997. building up

  998. and the

  999. growing of

  1000. his church.

  1001. And there's

  1002. no escape

  1003. in this

  1004. work either.

  1005. This isn't

  1006. just for a

  1007. select few.

  1008. Back at

  1009. verse 7 of

  1010. chapter 12,

  1011. to each

  1012. one,

  1013. the Spirit

  1014. is given

  1015. for the

  1016. common good.

  1017. Down at

  1018. verse 11,

  1019. all these

  1020. are the

  1021. work of

  1022. the one

  1023. and the

  1024. same

  1025. Spirit,

  1026. and he

  1027. gives to

  1028. each

  1029. one,

  1030. just as

  1031. he

  1032. determines.

  1033. So there's

  1034. no exclusion

  1035. or no

  1036. discrimination.

  1037. Each one

  1038. has been

  1039. given a

  1040. gift,

  1041. or gifts

  1042. from God

  1043. by his

  1044. Spirit,

  1045. for the

  1046. common good,

  1047. for the

  1048. building up

  1049. and the

  1050. growing of

  1051. his

  1052. church.

  1053. So it

  1054. seems that

  1055. as he

  1056. sets out

  1057. his

  1058. argument,

  1059. he's saying

  1060. to the

  1061. church,

  1062. and we're

  1063. learning for

  1064. ourselves

  1065. here,

  1066. there should

  1067. be no

  1068. arguing and

  1069. no fighting

  1070. over gifts,

  1071. but there

  1072. should be a

  1073. celebration

  1074. of the

  1075. diversity of

  1076. gifts,

  1077. and together

  1078. working for

  1079. the building

  1080. up of

  1081. his

  1082. church.

  1083. church.

  1084. So let

  1085. me ask the

  1086. question that

  1087. we started

  1088. with at the

  1089. beginning.

  1090. Are you a

  1091. spiritual

  1092. person?

  1093. Well, if

  1094. you have the

  1095. Holy Spirit

  1096. within you,

  1097. you are a

  1098. spiritual

  1099. person.

  1100. And what's

  1101. most important

  1102. is that we

  1103. can cry from

  1104. our heart,

  1105. Jesus is

  1106. Lord,

  1107. he is

  1108. Lord over

  1109. our lives,

  1110. and I am

  1111. submitting to

  1112. his authority.

  1113. That is the

  1114. sign.

  1115. of a

  1116. spiritual

  1117. person.

  1118. Are we a

  1119. spiritual

  1120. church?

  1121. Do we

  1122. recognize

  1123. amongst each

  1124. other the

  1125. variety and

  1126. the diversity

  1127. of gifts

  1128. that God

  1129. has given?

  1130. Or do we

  1131. look down in

  1132. inferiority and

  1133. in superiority

  1134. over one

  1135. another and

  1136. go,

  1137. hmm,

  1138. mine is

  1139. better than

  1140. yours?

  1141. Or do we

  1142. recognize that

  1143. God is

  1144. determined to

  1145. give just

  1146. as he

  1147. planned to

  1148. one another

  1149. for the

  1150. building up

  1151. and the

  1152. growing up

  1153. of each

  1154. one of

  1155. us and

  1156. for the

  1157. growing of

  1158. his church?

  1159. What's all

  1160. these gifts

  1161. going to look

  1162. like in

  1163. practice as

  1164. we seek to

  1165. gather together

  1166. as church and

  1167. live out as

  1168. church?

  1169. Well, you'll

  1170. need to come

  1171. next week and

  1172. discover what

  1173. Ralph has to

  1174. say.

  1175. well, let's

  1176. pray.

  1177. Let's

  1178. pray.

  1179. God, we

  1180. will be

  1181. together as

  1182. the

  1183. Lord.

  1184. Our

  1185. Father God,

  1186. we come

  1187. before you

  1188. as Father,

  1189. Son, and

  1190. Holy Spirit.

  1191. And we

  1192. submit ourselves

  1193. afresh before

  1194. you,

  1195. acknowledging that you
