  1. Which is on page 1154 and Kirsty is going to come and read. Thank you.

  2. Okay, that's 1 Corinthians chapter 14 and starting in verse 1.

    1 Corinthians 14 chapter mention

  3. Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

  4. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God.

  5. Indeed, no one understands him. He utters mysteries with his spirit.

  6. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.

  7. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

  8. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.

  9. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified.

  10. Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you,

  11. unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

  12. Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp,

  13. how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?

  14. Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?

  15. So it is with you.

  16. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying?

  17. You will just be speaking into the air.

  18. Undoubtedly, there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.

  19. If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying,

  20. I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.

  21. So it is with you.

  22. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

  23. For this reason, anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

  24. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

  25. So what shall I do?

  26. I will pray with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind.

  27. If you are praising God with your spirit, how can anyone who finds himself among those who do not understand say amen to your thanksgiving,

  28. since he does not know what you are saying?

  29. You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

  30. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

  31. But in the church, I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than 10,000 words in a tongue.

  32. Brothers, stop thinking like children.

  33. In regard to evil, be infants.

  34. Tongues then are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers.

  35. Prophesy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

  36. So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues,

  37. and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in,

  38. will they not say that you are out of your mind?

  39. But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying,

  40. he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all.

  41. And the secrets of his heart will be laid bare.

  42. So he will fall down and worship God,

  43. exclaiming, God is really among you.

  44. Thank you.

  45. Thank you.

  46. Thank you.

  47. Thank you, Kirsty.

  48. Please keep your Bible open there to 1 Corinthians 14.

  49. Before I pray, just one comment,

  50. and that is it's a large section we've just had read.

  51. There's a lot of questions that may arise out of it,

  52. so please do come back to me, ask me anything afterwards.

  53. And on the table as you came in, there was a little pamphlet,

  54. which is called Building Up the Church, Tongues and Prophecy.

  55. I made them available last week.

  56. There's a couple left,

  57. which goes into detail a little bit more about the chapter.

  58. So if you haven't read that, it might be helpful for you to read it.

  59. And if there's no more copies left,

  60. ask me and I can forward them to you or email you a copy.

  61. Let's pray.

  62. Our Father God, we thank you for your word,

  63. and we thank you for your Holy Spirit.

  64. And so we pray now and ask that you would speak to us

  65. a clear message

  66. that we may understand with our minds

  67. that it might drive deep into our hearts,

  68. that it would change us as a church

  69. more and more into the people you call us to be.

  70. May you build us up in our faith,

  71. and may we be a people

  72. so that when unbelievers come among us,

  73. they will say,

  74. God is among you.

  75. Father, please help us

  76. speak your word into our lives, we pray.

  77. In Jesus' name.

  78. Amen.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Well, if you could have any spiritual gift you wanted,

  82. what kind of gift would you choose?

  83. These are some of the things we've been looking at over chapters 11 to 14.

  84. Imagine the gift of healing,

  85. being able to pray for someone and seeing their illness removed.

  86. Or imagine the gift of miraculous powers,

  87. the power to change a circumstance supernaturally.

  88. Imagine the gift of faith,

  89. that ability to step out and achieve great things for God.

  90. Or imagine the gift of tongues,

  91. speaking in an unknown language

  92. that only God can understand what you're saying.

  93. What about the gift of encouraging

  94. and comforting?

  95. Coming alongside someone quietly

  96. and speaking words to them

  97. that build them up.

  98. Any takers for the gift of encouraging?

  99. Well, look at verse 18.

  100. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

  101. But in the church,

  102. that is, when the church gathers together

  103. just as we are right now,

  104. I would rather speak five intelligible words

  105. to instruct others

  106. than 10,000 words in a tongue.

  107. You see, the church in Corinth

  108. believed that the more spectacular your gift was,

  109. well, the more spiritual you were.

  110. And in particular,

  111. if you could speak in tongues,

  112. well, you were seen to be part of the spiritual elite.

  113. And if you couldn't speak in tongues,

  114. well, you were spiritually inferior.

  115. You were a kind of second-class Christian.

  116. Well, such thinking was destroying

  117. and dividing the church.

  118. As he reminded us back in chapter 12.

  119. Have a look at chapter 12, verse 18.

  120. Whatever gift we might like,

  121. we do not get to choose

  122. what gift we want.

  123. Look at chapter 12, verse 18.

  124. But in fact,

  125. God has arranged the parts in the body,

  126. every one of them,

  127. just as he wanted them to be.

  128. Verse 29.

  129. Are all the prophets?

  130. Are all apostles?

  131. Are all prophets?

  132. Are all teachers?

  133. Do all work miracles?

  134. Do all have gifts of healing?

  135. Do all speak in tongues?

  136. Do all interpret?

  137. The answer is obviously no.

  138. God is the one who gives gifts to his church,

  139. just as he determines.

  140. However,

  141. those who are spiritually mature,

  142. verse 31,

  143. but eagerly desire

  144. the greater gifts.

  145. Those who are mature in faith

  146. are to desire

  147. the greater gifts.

  148. Well, what are the greater gifts

  149. that we should desire?

  150. Well, that's what chapter 14

  151. is all about.

  152. Three things we learn here

  153. about the greater gifts

  154. that we should desire.

  155. First,

  156. desire gifts

  157. that build up

  158. the church.

  159. Look at verse 1,

  160. chapter 14.

  161. Follow the way of love

  162. and eagerly desire

  163. spiritual gifts,

  164. especially

  165. the gift of prophecy.

  166. Now, why

  167. is he encouraging us

  168. to desire

  169. the gift of prophecy?

  170. Well, the value of our gift,

  171. whatever gift we might have,

  172. is not measured

  173. by how it benefits me,

  174. but in how it builds up

  175. the church.

  176. So look at verse 4.

  177. The person who speaks

  178. in a tongue,

  179. that is,

  180. in an unknown language,

  181. edifies himself,

  182. but he who prophesies

  183. edifies

  184. or builds up

  185. the church.

  186. You see,

  187. the gift of tongues

  188. or the ability

  189. to speak

  190. in an unknown language

  191. is only of value

  192. to self.

  193. It builds up

  194. just one person.

  195. The gift of prophecy,

  196. however,

  197. is of greater value

  198. and worth

  199. because it can build up

  200. the whole church,

  201. many people.

  202. So he encourages us,

  203. verse 12,

  204. since you are eager

  205. to have spiritual gifts,

  206. try to excel

  207. in gifts

  208. that build up

  209. the church.

  210. That's why Paul

  211. has begun

  212. this whole argument

  213. in chapter 14

  214. with the command

  215. in verse 1.

  216. He starts off

  217. by telling us,

  218. follow the way

  219. of love,

  220. verse 1.

  221. You see,

  222. love is not

  223. self-centred.

  224. Love is

  225. others-centred.

  226. Love is not

  227. self-seeking

  228. or self-promoting.

  229. Love doesn't come

  230. to a gathering

  231. like this

  232. on a Sunday

  233. and wonder,

  234. what is somebody

  235. going to do for me?

  236. Or what can I get

  237. out of this

  238. for me?

  239. Love comes

  240. and reaches out

  241. for the good

  242. of others.

  243. So in love,

  244. we are to eagerly

  245. desire spiritual gifts

  246. that are

  247. others-centred.

  248. Gifts that build

  249. up the church

  250. rather than

  251. building up self.

  252. Now,

  253. one example

  254. of a gift

  255. that builds

  256. up the church

  257. is the gift

  258. of prophecy.

  259. But what is

  260. the gift

  261. of prophecy?

  262. Well,

  263. it's hard

  264. for us

  265. to be

  266. absolutely sure

  267. what prophecy

  268. is,

  269. as Paul doesn't

  270. actually give us

  271. a clear definition.

  272. It's one of those

  273. things that we're

  274. scratching our head,

  275. like,

  276. what does it

  277. actually mean?

  278. Well,

  279. we are given

  280. the goal

  281. or perhaps

  282. the aim

  283. of prophecy

  284. and we're

  285. told what

  286. that is.

  287. So have a look

  288. at what the goal

  289. of prophecy is.

  290. Maybe that helps

  291. us to understand

  292. a little better

  293. what it is.

  294. So look at

  295. verse 2.

  296. In contrast

  297. to tongues,

  298. he says this.

  299. Verse 2,

  300. for anyone

  301. who speaks

  302. in a tongue,

  303. that is an

  304. unknown language

  305. or an unlearned

  306. language,

  307. so it's not

  308. something like

  309. Spanish

  310. or Russian

  311. or Chinese

  312. or anything

  313. else like that.

  314. It's an

  315. unknown,

  316. unlearned

  317. language.

  318. For anyone

  319. who speaks

  320. in a tongue

  321. does not

  322. speak to men

  323. but to God.

  324. So it's like

  325. a private

  326. prayer to God.

  327. Indeed,

  328. no one

  329. understands them.

  330. He utters

  331. mysteries with

  332. his spirit.

  333. But,

  334. everyone

  335. who's

  336. prophesied

  337. speaks to

  338. men and

  339. women

  340. for their

  341. strengthening,

  342. encouragement,

  343. and comfort.

  344. We see

  345. something similar.

  346. Have a look

  347. at verse 31.

  348. For you

  349. can all

  350. prophesy

  351. in turn

  352. so that

  353. everyone

  354. may be

  355. instructed

  356. and

  357. encouraged.

  358. So,

  359. from those

  360. few verses,

  361. we can

  362. see that

  363. the goal

  364. or the

  365. aim of

  366. prophecy,

  367. the outcome

  368. of prophecy

  369. is to

  370. strengthen,

  371. encourage,

  372. comfort,

  373. and instruct.

  374. In fact,

  375. as we'll see

  376. in a minute,

  377. it can actually

  378. lead an

  379. unbeliever

  380. to faith.

  381. Have a look

  382. at the end

  383. of verse 25.

  384. So,

  385. this is in

  386. the context

  387. where somebody

  388. has prophesied

  389. and look

  390. what happens

  391. at the very

  392. end of verse 25.

  393. he will

  394. fall down,

  395. the unbeliever

  396. will fall down

  397. and worship

  398. God,

  399. exclaiming,

  400. God is

  401. really

  402. among you.

  403. Now,

  404. as we think

  405. about that,

  406. if we are

  407. people who

  408. are going

  409. to strengthen,

  410. encourage,

  411. comfort,

  412. instruct,

  413. and lead

  414. an unbeliever

  415. to faith

  416. in Christ,

  417. well,

  418. then the only

  419. way that's

  420. going to

  421. happen

  422. is by

  423. speaking the

  424. truth of

  425. God's word

  426. into people's

  427. lives.

  428. Of course,

  429. prophecy may

  430. be more

  431. than that,

  432. but at

  433. the very

  434. least,

  435. it is

  436. speaking

  437. truth

  438. from God,

  439. applying

  440. the scriptures,

  441. applying what

  442. God has

  443. given to us

  444. into each

  445. other's lives

  446. so that

  447. the church

  448. is built

  449. up.

  450. Have a look

  451. at verse

  452. 5 of

  453. chapter 14.

  454. So I

  455. would like

  456. every one

  457. of you

  458. to speak

  459. in tongues,

  460. but I

  461. would rather

  462. have you

  463. prophesy.

  464. Here's the

  465. reason.

  466. He who

  467. prophesies is

  468. greater than

  469. the one who

  470. speaks in

  471. tongues,

  472. unless he

  473. interprets,

  474. so that

  475. the church

  476. may be

  477. edified.

  478. So,

  479. we are

  480. to desire

  481. gifts that

  482. build up

  483. the church,

  484. especially

  485. the gift

  486. of prophecy.

  487. The second

  488. big thing,

  489. as we think

  490. about greater

  491. gifts,

  492. desire gifts

  493. that use

  494. intelligible

  495. words.

  496. Desire gifts

  497. that use

  498. intelligible

  499. words.

  500. Verse 6.

  501. Now,

  502. brothers and

  503. sisters,

  504. if I come

  505. to you,

  506. and speak

  507. in tongues,

  508. what good

  509. will I be

  510. to you?

  511. You're not

  512. going to

  513. understand what

  514. I'm saying.

  515. What good

  516. will I be

  517. to you,

  518. unless I

  519. bring to

  520. you some

  521. revelation,

  522. or knowledge,

  523. or prophecy,

  524. or word of

  525. instruction?

  526. Now,

  527. again,

  528. we can have

  529. lots of

  530. ideas as to

  531. what they

  532. actually all

  533. mean,

  534. the gifts

  535. that we

  536. have there

  537. in verse

  538. 6.

  539. We're not

  540. told exactly

  541. what each

  542. one are.

  543. But what

  544. we can

  545. say for

  546. certain is

  547. that revelation,

  548. a word of

  549. knowledge,

  550. or prophecy,

  551. or word of

  552. instruction,

  553. they're all

  554. word gifts

  555. that communicate

  556. a clear,

  557. intelligible

  558. message.

  559. So,

  560. if we're

  561. going to be

  562. people who

  563. build up

  564. the church,

  565. then we

  566. should desire

  567. gifts that

  568. communicate

  569. communicate

  570. with

  571. intelligible

  572. words.

  573. There should

  574. be clarity,

  575. not confusion.

  576. Verse 7.

  577. Even in the

  578. case of

  579. lifeless things

  580. that make

  581. sounds,

  582. such as the

  583. flute or

  584. harp,

  585. or as in our

  586. case today,

  587. a guitar and

  588. the beat of

  589. a drum

  590. box,

  591. how will

  592. anyone know

  593. what tune

  594. is being

  595. played unless

  596. there is a

  597. distinction

  598. in the

  599. notes?

  600. How would

  601. we know

  602. what to

  603. sing if

  604. it's just

  605. the same

  606. chord that's

  607. played the

  608. whole way

  609. through?

  610. Just as

  611. music brings

  612. clarity and

  613. produces a

  614. recognisable

  615. tune,

  616. so our

  617. words should

  618. bring clarity

  619. to one

  620. another.

  621. Or verse 8.

  622. Again, if the

  623. trumpet does

  624. not sound a

  625. clear call,

  626. who will get

  627. ready for

  628. battle?

  629. So this is

  630. going back to

  631. ancient times,

  632. times where

  633. the person

  634. would blow

  635. the bugle

  636. and it

  637. would send

  638. a clear

  639. message to

  640. the troops

  641. to get

  642. ready for

  643. battle.

  644. Well, in

  645. the same

  646. way, our

  647. words should

  648. send a

  649. clear message

  650. that is

  651. easily

  652. understood.

  653. Verse 9.

  654. So it is

  655. with you.

  656. Unless you

  657. speak intelligible

  658. words with

  659. your tongue,

  660. how will

  661. anyone know

  662. what you

  663. are saying?

  664. it will be

  665. just as if

  666. you are

  667. speaking into

  668. the air.

  669. Now I am

  670. sure we have

  671. all heard the

  672. expression.

  673. I heard it

  674. just last

  675. week.

  676. Preach the

  677. gospel and

  678. if necessary

  679. use words.

  680. Do you know

  681. what verse

  682. that comes

  683. in?

  684. What part

  685. of the

  686. Bible?

  687. Anybody

  688. know?

  689. It is

  690. often quoted

  691. as if it

  692. comes from

  693. the Bible.

  694. It is not

  695. actually in

  696. the Bible.

  697. And the

  698. biblical

  699. writers,

  700. including

  701. Paul,

  702. would

  703. completely

  704. disagree

  705. with

  706. preach the

  707. gospel and

  708. if necessary

  709. use words.

  710. The point is

  711. we cannot

  712. preach the

  713. gospel and

  714. we cannot

  715. build each

  716. other up

  717. by comforting,

  718. encouraging and

  719. strengthening and

  720. leading someone

  721. to Christ

  722. without using

  723. words.

  724. Our words

  725. communicate a

  726. clear and

  727. intelligible

  728. message that

  729. will strengthen

  730. and encourage

  731. comfort and

  732. instruct.

  733. So,

  734. verse 12,

  735. so it is

  736. with you,

  737. if you are

  738. eager to

  739. have spiritual

  740. gifts,

  741. try to

  742. excel in

  743. gifts that

  744. build up

  745. the church.

  746. Desire word

  747. gifts like

  748. prophecy because

  749. they will cause

  750. the church to

  751. grow and be

  752. strong.

  753. Now that

  754. doesn't mean

  755. that everyone

  756. has to be a

  757. preacher.

  758. Or that you

  759. have to have

  760. the ability

  761. to teach at

  762. Munster Bible

  763. College or to

  764. be able to

  765. lead a Bible

  766. study with a

  767. group of

  768. people.

  769. But it does

  770. mean that we

  771. as individuals

  772. can begin to

  773. speak the word

  774. of God into

  775. each other's

  776. lives.

  777. What would

  778. that look like?

  779. Well, it might

  780. be that you've

  781. been reading your

  782. Bible through the

  783. week and there's

  784. some scriptures

  785. in your mind

  786. and you're

  787. thinking,

  788. that will

  789. really be

  790. helpful for

  791. and I'm

  792. going to

  793. share that

  794. with them.

  795. Or I'm

  796. going to

  797. send a text

  798. message to

  799. them or an

  800. email.

  801. Or it could

  802. be that in

  803. the course of

  804. conversation with

  805. someone, the

  806. Spirit brings to

  807. mind and prompts

  808. you with a

  809. word of

  810. encouragement.

  811. You might not

  812. even be aware

  813. of what's going

  814. on in the

  815. person's life,

  816. but the

  817. Spirit prompts

  818. you and gives

  819. you a word

  820. from God to

  821. encourage them

  822. and comfort

  823. them and

  824. build them

  825. up.

  826. So here we

  827. are encouraged

  828. to speak

  829. intelligible,

  830. clear words

  831. into each

  832. other's lives

  833. so that we

  834. are growing

  835. and become

  836. strong.

  837. So clarity,

  838. not confusion.

  839. But we must

  840. also use our

  841. mind.

  842. Well you say,

  843. well what about

  844. this gift of

  845. tongues?

  846. That's a word

  847. gift, isn't it?

  848. Shouldn't we

  849. encourage people

  850. to use that

  851. gift in the

  852. life of the

  853. church?

  854. Well that was

  855. the problem in

  856. the church at

  857. Corinth.

  858. They thought

  859. that to speak

  860. in tongues

  861. and unintelligible

  862. language was far

  863. superior and Paul

  864. is arguing through

  865. this saying,

  866. no all it does

  867. is bring confusion.

  868. Have a look at

  869. verse 13.

  870. For this reason

  871. anyone who

  872. speaks in a

  873. tongue,

  874. an unlearned

  875. language,

  876. should pray

  877. that he may

  878. interpret what

  879. he says.

  880. So if someone

  881. in the church

  882. such as a

  883. gathering like

  884. this,

  885. if you have

  886. the gift of

  887. tongues

  888. and you've

  889. got a message

  890. of encouragement

  891. or comfort for

  892. someone,

  893. to make it

  894. profitable and

  895. beneficial for

  896. the person or

  897. for the whole

  898. church,

  899. at that moment

  900. they should be

  901. asking God to

  902. enable them to

  903. speak clearly

  904. and intelligibly,

  905. to interpret

  906. so that they are

  907. speaking words that

  908. people will

  909. understand.

  910. That's how Paul

  911. uses his gift of

  912. tongues.

  913. Look at verse

  914. 14.

  915. He says,

  916. For if I pray

  917. in a tongue,

  918. my spirit prays,

  919. so the spirit

  920. is at work in

  921. my life,

  922. but my mind

  923. is unfruitful.

  924. I don't know

  925. what I'm saying

  926. and nobody else

  927. will understand

  928. what I'm saying.

  929. Verse 15.

  930. So what shall

  931. I do?

  932. Well, I will

  933. pray with my

  934. spirit,

  935. but I will

  936. also pray

  937. with my mind.

  938. I will sing

  939. with my spirit,

  940. but I will

  941. also sing

  942. with my mind.

  943. In other words,

  944. we don't leave

  945. our minds at

  946. home when we

  947. gather on a

  948. Sunday.

  949. We use our

  950. God-given minds

  951. so that people

  952. will understand

  953. with their minds

  954. what is being

  955. said.

  956. Verse 18.

  957. I thank God

  958. that I speak in

  959. tongues more

  960. than all of you.

  961. So Paul is

  962. not saying the

  963. gift of tongues

  964. is wrong,

  965. because he

  966. clearly uses it,

  967. so it's not a

  968. wrong thing.

  969. But if anybody

  970. does have the

  971. gift of tongues,

  972. it should be

  973. used for

  974. personal and

  975. private use,

  976. not for public

  977. or corporate

  978. use.

  979. That surely is

  980. what he's saying

  981. in verse 19.

  982. But in the

  983. church,

  984. as the church

  985. gathers,

  986. I would rather

  987. speak five

  988. intelligible words

  989. to instruct

  990. others than

  991. ten thousand

  992. words in a

  993. tongue.

  994. God's

  995. word gift.

  996. So let me

  997. encourage us

  998. when it comes

  999. to our tea

  1000. and coffee

  1001. time.

  1002. How many

  1003. times have

  1004. you heard it

  1005. said,

  1006. speak to

  1007. each other

  1008. and encourage

  1009. each other?

  1010. How many

  1011. times have

  1012. you heard

  1013. that?

  1014. Well, in

  1015. case you

  1016. haven't heard

  1017. it, let me

  1018. say it again.

  1019. When you

  1020. have tea and

  1021. coffee, it's

  1022. a great

  1023. opportunity to

  1024. put into

  1025. practice

  1026. our word

  1027. gifts.

  1028. As the

  1029. spirit prompts

  1030. you and

  1031. equips you

  1032. over tea

  1033. and coffee,

  1034. the spirit

  1035. will give you

  1036. that courage

  1037. to actually

  1038. go up to

  1039. somebody and

  1040. not just

  1041. say, oh,

  1042. isn't the

  1043. weather lovely

  1044. or what did

  1045. you think of

  1046. the match?

  1047. I'm sure

  1048. that is

  1049. helpful.

  1050. But does

  1051. it encourage

  1052. us in the

  1053. faith?

  1054. Speak

  1055. these words

  1056. that the

  1057. Lord is

  1058. giving us.

  1059. Maybe

  1060. somebody is

  1061. down and

  1062. they need

  1063. comforted.

  1064. Maybe

  1065. somebody is

  1066. struggling and

  1067. they need

  1068. encouraged.

  1069. Maybe

  1070. somebody is

  1071. walking away

  1072. from Christ

  1073. and they

  1074. need

  1075. instructed.

  1076. It isn't

  1077. just the

  1078. preacher up

  1079. front who

  1080. has to

  1081. do that.

  1082. So desire

  1083. word gifts

  1084. like prophecy

  1085. so that

  1086. together we

  1087. can build

  1088. up the

  1089. church.

  1090. church.

  1091. So desire

  1092. gifts that

  1093. build up

  1094. the church,

  1095. desire

  1096. gifts that

  1097. use intelligible

  1098. words,

  1099. and desire

  1100. gifts that

  1101. communicate the

  1102. gospel.

  1103. This is where

  1104. it's all

  1105. heading.

  1106. Look at

  1107. verse 20.

  1108. Brothers

  1109. and sisters,

  1110. stop thinking

  1111. like children.

  1112. Would you

  1113. grow up?

  1114. stop thinking

  1115. in this

  1116. spiritually

  1117. immature way.

  1118. Of course,

  1119. verse 20,

  1120. in regard to

  1121. evil, be

  1122. infants, so

  1123. have an

  1124. innocent mind

  1125. about things

  1126. that are evil

  1127. or not of

  1128. God, but

  1129. in your

  1130. thinking,

  1131. be adults.

  1132. Be

  1133. spiritually

  1134. mature.

  1135. When it

  1136. comes to

  1137. desiring

  1138. gifts,

  1139. desire

  1140. prophecy

  1141. over tongues

  1142. because it

  1143. will build

  1144. up the

  1145. church.

  1146. In fact,

  1147. prophecy

  1148. can lead

  1149. an unbeliever

  1150. to faith

  1151. in Christ.

  1152. Let's

  1153. see how

  1154. that's

  1155. true.

  1156. First,

  1157. unintelligible

  1158. words lead

  1159. to unbelief.

  1160. Look at

  1161. verse 21.

  1162. In the

  1163. law,

  1164. or in the

  1165. scriptures,

  1166. that's the

  1167. Old Testament,

  1168. it is

  1169. written,

  1170. through men

  1171. of strange

  1172. tongues and

  1173. through the

  1174. lips of

  1175. foreigners,

  1176. I will

  1177. speak to

  1178. this people,

  1179. but even

  1180. then they

  1181. will not

  1182. listen to

  1183. me, says

  1184. the Lord.

  1185. Well, what's

  1186. all that

  1187. about?

  1188. Well, we

  1189. need to go

  1190. back to

  1191. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 28 chapter mention

  1192. 28.

  1193. So, keep

  1194. your finger

  1195. in 1

  1196. Corinthians

  1197. 14.

  1198. Go back

  1199. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 28 chapter mention

  1200. chapter

  1201. 28,

  1202. which is

  1203. on page

  1204. 7-1-1.

  1205. because what

  1206. we just

  1207. read there

  1208. is a

  1209. quote from

  1210. the prophet

  1211. Isaiah in

  1212. chapter 28.

  1213. So, go

  1214. with me,

  1215. we're going

  1216. to follow a

  1217. few verses

  1218. there.

  1219. Isaiah

    Isaiah 28 chapter mention

  1220. chapter 28,

  1221. page 7-1-1.

  1222. So, this

  1223. is God

  1224. speaking

  1225. through

  1226. the prophet

  1227. Isaiah

  1228. with a

  1229. clear,

  1230. intelligible

  1231. message

  1232. to the

  1233. people of

  1234. Israel.

  1235. And the

  1236. big message

  1237. through the

  1238. whole book,

  1239. like much

  1240. of the

  1241. prophets,

  1242. is calling

  1243. the people

  1244. to repentance

  1245. and to

  1246. come back

  1247. to God.

  1248. Stop

  1249. following

  1250. your ways

  1251. of idols,

  1252. turn back

  1253. to the

  1254. Lord.

  1255. That was

  1256. the clear,

  1257. intelligible

  1258. message

  1259. to the

  1260. people.

  1261. But how

  1262. do the

  1263. people respond?

  1264. Well, look

  1265. at verse

  1266. 7 of

  1267. chapter 28.

  1268. And these

  1269. people,

  1270. these also

  1271. stagger from

  1272. wine and

  1273. reel from

  1274. beer.

  1275. Their

  1276. priests and

  1277. their prophets

  1278. stagger from

  1279. beer and

  1280. are befuddled.

  1281. What a

  1282. great word.

  1283. Befuddled

  1284. with wine.

  1285. They reel

  1286. from beer.

  1287. It seems

  1288. that they're

  1289. far too

  1290. busy drinking

  1291. beer and

  1292. wine and

  1293. slurring their

  1294. own words

  1295. rather than

  1296. listening to

  1297. God's clear

  1298. word.

  1299. In fact,

  1300. they just

  1301. laugh at

  1302. Isaiah.

  1303. Look at

  1304. verse 9.

  1305. Who is he

  1306. trying to

  1307. teach?

  1308. To whom

  1309. is he

  1310. explaining

  1311. his message?

  1312. To

  1313. children

  1314. weaned from

  1315. their milk?

  1316. To those

  1317. just taken

  1318. from the

  1319. breast?

  1320. What Isaiah

  1321. says, it's

  1322. all baby

  1323. talk.

  1324. Did you

  1325. ever hear

  1326. him?

  1327. Goo,

  1328. goo,

  1329. goo?

  1330. Verse 10.

  1331. For it

  1332. is do

  1333. and do,

  1334. do and

  1335. do,

  1336. rule on

  1337. rule,

  1338. rule on

  1339. rule,

  1340. a little

  1341. here,

  1342. a little

  1343. there.

  1344. What's

  1345. all that

  1346. about?

  1347. Well,

  1348. it's

  1349. actually,

  1350. if we

  1351. know that

  1352. our Old

  1353. Testament is

  1354. written in

  1355. Hebrew,

  1356. it's trying

  1357. to get

  1358. across a

  1359. translation,

  1360. which is

  1361. actually better

  1362. if we do

  1363. read Hebrew

  1364. itself.

  1365. So at

  1366. the bottom

  1367. of your

  1368. page,

  1369. you'll

  1370. probably

  1371. see a

  1372. little

  1373. note

  1374. at the

  1375. very

  1376. bottom

  1377. in

  1378. Hebrew.

  1379. Do you

  1380. have it

  1381. there?

  1382. Can you

  1383. follow with

  1384. me?

  1385. Don't

  1386. normally do

  1387. this.

  1388. I'm not

  1389. an expert

  1390. in Hebrew.

  1391. I'm only

  1392. reading what's

  1393. here.

  1394. But you

  1395. see,

  1396. it gives

  1397. the Hebrew

  1398. for verse

  1399. 10.

  1400. It says,

  1401. sav,

  1402. la sav,

  1403. sav,

  1404. sav,

  1405. cav,

  1406. cav,

  1407. cav,

  1408. cav.

  1409. So we

  1410. can understand

  1411. that as

  1412. they're

  1413. listening to

  1414. Isaiah,

  1415. they're just

  1416. simply mocking

  1417. Isaiah the

  1418. prophet as

  1419. he brings

  1420. his clear

  1421. message.

  1422. Do you ever

  1423. hear what he

  1424. says?

  1425. Sav,

  1426. la sav,

  1427. sav,

  1428. la sav,

  1429. blah,

  1430. blah,

  1431. blah.

  1432. On and

  1433. on he

  1434. goes,

  1435. cav,

  1436. la cav,

  1437. cav,

  1438. la cav,

  1439. yap,

  1440. yap,

  1441. yap.

  1442. A silly

  1443. message and

  1444. they don't

  1445. want to

  1446. hear.

  1447. But what

  1448. is God's

  1449. response?

  1450. Chapter

  1451. 28,

  1452. verse 11.

  1453. Very

  1454. well then,

  1455. with

  1456. foreign lips

  1457. and strange

  1458. tongues,

  1459. God will

  1460. speak to

  1461. this people

  1462. to whom

  1463. he said,

  1464. this is

  1465. the resting

  1466. place,

  1467. let the

  1468. weary rest,

  1469. in other

  1470. words,

  1471. come back

  1472. to me,

  1473. and this

  1474. is a

  1475. place of

  1476. repose.

  1477. But they

  1478. would not

  1479. listen.

  1480. Because of

  1481. their refusal

  1482. to listen

  1483. to the

  1484. clear message

  1485. of God,

  1486. God is

  1487. now going

  1488. to speak

  1489. through

  1490. foreign

  1491. lips,

  1492. through a

  1493. foreign

  1494. language.

  1495. That great

  1496. nation,

  1497. the Assyrians,

  1498. a people

  1499. who are

  1500. going to

  1501. speak a

  1502. different

  1503. language,

  1504. and then

  1505. that mighty

  1506. nation who

  1507. comes in,

  1508. and we know

  1509. for history

  1510. they did

  1511. invade Israel,

  1512. will come

  1513. and destroy

  1514. you and

  1515. defeat you.

  1516. So he's

  1517. warning them

  1518. and saying

  1519. to Israel,

  1520. when you

  1521. hear the

  1522. Assyrian

  1523. soldiers

  1524. walking down

  1525. your street,

  1526. and you

  1527. cannot

  1528. understand

  1529. what they're

  1530. saying,

  1531. you will

  1532. know that

  1533. God's

  1534. judgment

  1535. has come

  1536. upon you.

  1537. With

  1538. foreign lips

  1539. and strange

  1540. tongues,

  1541. God will

  1542. speak to

  1543. this people.

  1544. Back to

  1545. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 14 chapter mention

  1546. chapter 14.

  1547. You see,

  1548. it's important

  1549. that when we

  1550. read our

  1551. Bibles,

  1552. we get the

  1553. context of

  1554. what's actually

  1555. being said.

  1556. tongues,

  1557. so back

  1558. to verse

  1559. 22.

  1560. Tongues,

  1561. then,

  1562. are a sign

  1563. not for

  1564. believers,

  1565. but for

  1566. unbelievers.

  1567. It's a sign

  1568. for those

  1569. who have

  1570. no belief,

  1571. or those

  1572. like Israel

  1573. in the past

  1574. who ignored

  1575. the word

  1576. of God

  1577. and refused

  1578. to believe

  1579. what God

  1580. had to say.

  1581. It was almost

  1582. like a

  1583. judgment

  1584. had come

  1585. upon them.

  1586. There was

  1587. nothing more

  1588. that they

  1589. could hear

  1590. from God.

  1591. It was

  1592. all gibberish.

  1593. Verse 22.

  1594. Prophecy,

  1595. however,

  1596. is for

  1597. believers,

  1598. those who

  1599. will believe,

  1600. not for

  1601. unbelievers,

  1602. or those who

  1603. will refuse

  1604. to believe

  1605. God's

  1606. message.

  1607. Now,

  1608. all of this

  1609. is applied

  1610. to the local

  1611. church,

  1612. when we

  1613. gather.

  1614. And that

  1615. is,

  1616. intelligible

  1617. words leads

  1618. to belief.

  1619. So look

  1620. at verse 23.

  1621. If the

  1622. whole church

  1623. comes together,

  1624. just as we

  1625. are right now,

  1626. and everyone

  1627. speaks in

  1628. tongues,

  1629. and some

  1630. who do not

  1631. understand,

  1632. or somebody

  1633. who's not

  1634. yet a believer,

  1635. or some

  1636. unbelievers

  1637. come in,

  1638. will they

  1639. not say

  1640. that you

  1641. are out

  1642. of your

  1643. mind?

  1644. the only

  1645. conclusion

  1646. they will

  1647. come to

  1648. is that

  1649. the church

  1650. has gone

  1651. completely

  1652. mad.

  1653. Rather than

  1654. lead people

  1655. to believe,

  1656. it will cause

  1657. them not

  1658. to believe,

  1659. just as it

  1660. was for

  1661. Israel.

  1662. It was like

  1663. a hardening

  1664. of their

  1665. heart.

  1666. They didn't

  1667. know what

  1668. was going

  1669. on anymore.

  1670. They

  1671. couldn't

  1672. hear God's

  1673. clear message.

  1674. Verse 24.

  1675. But if

  1676. an

  1677. unbeliever

  1678. or someone

  1679. who does

  1680. not

  1681. understand

  1682. comes in,

  1683. while everybody

  1684. is prophesying,

  1685. that is,

  1686. people are

  1687. encouraging,

  1688. comforting,

  1689. instructing

  1690. one another,

  1691. they will be

  1692. convinced by

  1693. all that he

  1694. is a sinner

  1695. and will be

  1696. judged by

  1697. all,

  1698. and the

  1699. secrets of

  1700. his heart

  1701. will be

  1702. laid bare.

  1703. The

  1704. person,

  1705. the

  1706. unbeliever,

  1707. who is

  1708. part of

  1709. the gathering

  1710. will hear

  1711. the clear,

  1712. intelligible

  1713. message of

  1714. God,

  1715. they will

  1716. begin to

  1717. hear through

  1718. people's

  1719. conversations,

  1720. the truth

  1721. of who

  1722. Jesus is

  1723. and what

  1724. Jesus has

  1725. done.

  1726. That God

  1727. has forgiven

  1728. us of all

  1729. of our

  1730. sin,

  1731. that he's

  1732. adopted us

  1733. as his

  1734. children into

  1735. his family,

  1736. that he's

  1737. guaranteed us

  1738. an eternity

  1739. in his good

  1740. and perfect

  1741. kingdom,

  1742. that we

  1743. can enjoy

  1744. God and

  1745. know his

  1746. love in

  1747. our lives.

  1748. And as

  1749. people talk

  1750. and build

  1751. each other

  1752. up with

  1753. God's

  1754. words,

  1755. so

  1756. unbelievers

  1757. will hear

  1758. the truth

  1759. of God

  1760. be convicted

  1761. of their

  1762. sin and

  1763. come to

  1764. face in

  1765. Christ.

  1766. Isn't

  1767. that

  1768. incredible?

  1769. That over

  1770. a cup of

  1771. tea,

  1772. that someone

  1773. could overhear

  1774. your conversation

  1775. with someone

  1776. else,

  1777. or in a

  1778. little group

  1779. or as you

  1780. meet up with

  1781. friends during

  1782. the week,

  1783. as they hear

  1784. you talk with

  1785. somebody else

  1786. about your

  1787. faith and how

  1788. God has

  1789. helped you,

  1790. that God

  1791. could use

  1792. that to

  1793. turn someone

  1794. to Christ?

  1795. They will

  1796. fall down and

  1797. worship God,

  1798. exclaiming God

  1799. is really among

  1800. you.

  1801. So,

  1802. as we come

  1803. to the end

  1804. of this section

  1805. in chapter 14,

  1806. the encouragement

  1807. is to us

  1808. all to

  1809. desire gifts

  1810. that build up

  1811. the church.

  1812. Yes,

  1813. God gives

  1814. them,

  1815. but we can

  1816. ask,

  1817. we can pray,

  1818. and as we

  1819. ask for gifts

  1820. that build up

  1821. the church,

  1822. desire gifts

  1823. that use

  1824. intelligible

  1825. words,

  1826. word gifts

  1827. like prophecy,

  1828. asking,

  1829. and desire

  1830. gifts that

  1831. will communicate

  1832. the gospel

  1833. clearly to

  1834. those who

  1835. do not yet

  1836. believe,

  1837. gifts like

  1838. prophecy.

  1839. May God

  1840. encourage us,

  1841. comfort,

  1842. strengthen,

  1843. and instruct

  1844. us through

  1845. one another

  1846. as we

  1847. speak God's

  1848. word into

  1849. each other's

  1850. lives.

  1851. Let's pray.

  1852. Our Father

  1853. God,

  1854. we thank you

  1855. that you

  1856. have spoken

  1857. a clear,

  1858. intelligible

  1859. message to

  1860. us through

  1861. your Son,

  1862. the Lord

  1863. Jesus Christ,

  1864. and by

  1865. your Spirit

  1866. you have

  1867. opened up

  1868. our minds

  1869. so that we

  1870. can understand

  1871. all that you

  1872. have given

  1873. to us.

  1874. And it's

  1875. our desire,

  1876. Father,

  1877. would you

  1878. please fill us

  1879. afresh with

  1880. your Holy

  1881. Spirit.

  1882. Would you

  1883. give to

  1884. this church

  1885. gifts that

  1886. build one

  1887. and

  1888. build one

  1889. another up?

  1890. No matter

  1891. how timid

  1892. we may

  1893. feel,

  1894. no matter

  1895. how self-conscious

  1896. we may feel

  1897. when we

  1898. speak,

  1899. Father,

  1900. give us

  1901. words that

  1902. we can

  1903. speak into

  1904. each other's

  1905. lives,

  1906. that will

  1907. encourage and

  1908. build up and

  1909. instruct and

  1910. comfort those

  1911. who are

  1912. struggling,

  1913. leading people

  1914. back to

  1915. Christ,

  1916. so that we

  1917. are built

  1918. up together

  1919. as your

  1920. people.

  1921. So,

  1922. Father,

  1923. do your

  1924. work amongst

  1925. us.

  1926. Pour out

  1927. your Spirit,

  1928. we pray,

  1929. and we

  1930. ask this for

  1931. your honour

  1932. and for your

  1933. glory,

  1934. that people

  1935. will come

  1936. to faith

  1937. and that we

  1938. will go on

  1939. to follow

  1940. Jesus.

  1941. We ask

  1942. this in

  1943. his name.

  1944. Amen.

  1945. Well,

  1946. we're going

  1947. to sing

  1948. together,

  1949. connected to

  1950. what we've

  1951. been thinking

  1952. of this

  1953. morning.

  1954. Speak,

  1955. O Lord.

  1956. It's a

  1957. prayer that

  1958. God,

  1959. as we read

  1960. the word,

  1961. as we're

  1962. listening to

  1963. him,

  1964. that God

  1965. would speak

  1966. to us,

  1967. so that we

  1968. in turn can

  1969. speak to

  1970. one another.

  1971. Let's stand

  1972. together as

  1973. we sing.

  1974. speak, O Lord,

  1975. as we come

  1976. to you,

  1977. to receive

  1978. the fruit

  1979. of your

  1980. holy word.

  1981. take your

  1982. truth,

  1983. plant it

  1984. deep in us,

  1985. shape and

  1986. flesh it

  1987. up in

  1988. your

  1989. likeness.

  1990. That the

  1991. light of

  1992. Christ

  1993. might be

  1994. seen

  1995. today

  1996. in our

  1997. acts of

  1998. love

  1999. and our

  2000. deeds of

  2001. faith.

  2002. Speak, O

  2003. Lord,

  2004. and fulfill

  2005. in us

  2006. all your

  2007. praise.
