  1. from verse 12 through to verse 26. So we're in Philippians chapter 1, we're starting in verse 12 and we're reading through to verse 26.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  2. And just as you're turning that up, just to reinforce what Connor was saying,

  3. we do have a busy week this week in the life of our churches and I do encourage you to come along to Summer Bible Week

  4. and just a little bit more detail, a Summer Bible Week in the mornings, it's in Middleton in a new venue.

  5. It's now in the My Place community building, which is, if you know Middleton, it's right in the middle of town

  6. where the big oval roundabout is, opposite the Super Value entrance. And as you come, if you use the public car park,

  7. which is just parallel with the oval, it's the tree-lined car park, you'll see it. And if you park there and come over for 10 o'clock,

  8. it'll be lovely to see you there. And then in the evening, it's in Court Baptist.

  9. And then just to say again, just to remind you of this, revision event. Revision, making the church your lifetime career,

  10. no matter what your job is. So the purpose of that evening is not just for people who are thinking of going into full-time ministry,

  11. but how all of us minister throughout our lives in the context of the local church, as followers of Jesus,

  12. no matter what we do. So I encourage you to consider coming along to that, anyone from 16 and up, on Friday, at Joy's.

  13. But let's just read Philippians chapter 1 and we'll read from verse 12.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  14. Paul writes,

  15. Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.

  16. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.

  17. And because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God

  18. more courageously and fearlessly.

  19. It's true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.

  20. The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defence of the gospel.

  21. And the former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely,

  22. supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.

  23. But what does it matter?

  24. The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true,

  25. Christ is preached.

  26. And because of this, I rejoice.

  27. Yes, and I'll continue to rejoice,

  28. for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

  29. what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.

  30. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed,

  31. but will have sufficient courage so that now, as always,

  32. Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

  33. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  34. If I'm to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me.

  35. Yet, what shall I choose? I don't know.

  36. I'm torn between the two.

  37. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far,

  38. but it's more necessary for you that I remain in the body.

  39. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and will continue with all of you

  40. for your progress and joy in the faith,

  41. so that through my being with you again,

  42. your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.

  43. May God bless reading of his word this morning.

  44. What I want us to think about, as you keep your Bibles open,

  45. I don't have any visual aids or anything like that on the PowerPoint,

  46. so maybe that's maybe a bit more demanding this morning if you're used to them,

  47. but just keep looking in the scriptures and we'll be fine.

  48. That will drive us through.

  49. We're going to just look through this passage bit by bit this morning.

  50. But what we want to think about is Paul's perspective on suffering.

  51. Alex and Connor have already referred to this reality of suffering in all life,

  52. in all human existence in this world,

  53. and we want to think about Paul's perspective as a believer on this reality of suffering.

  54. The man who drove me around Ethiopia about 10 years ago,

  55. when I went over with SIM,

  56. we just did a couple of weeks of teaching there amongst the Sudanese,

  57. who were over the border and who were there in Ethiopia because of the war in Sudan,

  58. and we did a two-week talk there.

  59. The guy who drove me around saw his dad taken away by the authorities when he was six.

  60. His dad was a pastor,

  61. and he described to me, actually through tears as he was driving,

  62. that he didn't see his father for two years from the ages of six to eight.

  63. And it was simply because his father was a man who preached Christ.

  64. And that was an affront to the regime in Ethiopia at that time,

  65. and so he suffered.

  66. I don't know if you heard in the news this week,

  67. but there are now proposed anti-terror laws in Russia,

  68. which we hear about a lot, especially in the UK and other parts,

  69. this anti-terror legislation.

  70. Well, Russia is introducing anti-terror laws,

  71. which will come into effect on the 20th of July,

  72. unless Putin can be persuaded otherwise.

  73. And part of his anti-terror legislation in Russia

  74. will be to prohibit any activity

  75. designed to recruit people into a religious group.

  76. That means that from the 20th of July,

  77. if you are sharing your faith as a Christian in Russia,

  78. unless it is in an official church building,

  79. you are breaking the law,

  80. and you will be subject to the punishment of the law.

  81. It means that you cannot invite people to religious events.

  82. It means that you cannot hold meetings,

  83. as so many of the evangelical churches do,

  84. in people's homes anymore.

  85. It is against the law.

  86. Evangelicals in Russia are preparing themselves

  87. for persecution again by the state.

  88. So it does raise the question,

  89. as we can never assume that that won't happen in Ireland

  90. at some point as well,

  91. is it worth it

  92. to come to know Jesus personally,

  93. to begin to talk publicly

  94. about what you know to be true in your heart,

  95. and then not only to end up maybe unpopular

  96. amongst your peers,

  97. but maybe end up imprisoned,

  98. cut off from family,

  99. friends, and society,

  100. all because of a public faith in Jesus.

  101. Surely this is going to break our faith,

  102. if it happens to little old us.

  103. Surely we are going to be crushed,

  104. and we will ask that repeated question perhaps,

  105. why did I become a Christian anyway?

  106. Maybe this morning as you come in here,

  107. you are carrying, even now,

  108. some personal weight of suffering

  109. that is connected to your faith,

  110. as well as suffering that is just connected to being human.

  111. Well, Paul gives us a perspective on our suffering

  112. in this passage.

  113. It shows how a person

  114. who is alive in Christ,

  115. despite terrible consequences

  116. for confessing Jesus as Lord,

  117. can understand the suffering

  118. they may be under.

  119. Indeed, what we find in this letter

  120. is that Paul expresses

  121. consistently joy,

  122. even as a man

  123. who is sitting in chains

  124. because of his faith.

  125. And so Philippians gives us

  126. reasons why Paul

  127. and why we

  128. can even be joyful

  129. as we face,

  130. like Paul did

  131. in this letter,

  132. also,

  133. sorrow upon sorrow,

  134. he writes.

  135. Because he was struggling

  136. as a prisoner,

  137. and yet he was full of joy.

  138. How could that be?

  139. How can he be like that

  140. as he suffers?

  141. Paul is in prison.

  142. It's around AD 61.

  143. And the reason for the letter

  144. very possibly rests

  145. on the shoulders

  146. of the messenger

  147. from the Philippian church

  148. who brings this letter back

  149. to the Philippian church.

  150. That is Epaphroditus,

  151. the elder,

  152. who comes

  153. and brings a gift

  154. to Paul

  155. as the Philippians

  156. hear that

  157. he is in prison

  158. for the gospel.

  159. So it's very possibly

  160. motivated

  161. as a letter

  162. of thanks,

  163. a thank you letter

  164. to the Philippian church.

  165. But as a pastor,

  166. Paul can't help

  167. but shepherd

  168. the people

  169. that he's writing to.

  170. And so from prison,

  171. he encourages the church

  172. to continue

  173. in Christian unity

  174. and love

  175. following the example

  176. of Christ's humility.

  177. we get that very famous

  178. passage in verses 5 to 11

  179. which is possibly

  180. the quote of an ancient hymn

  181. in chapter 2.

  182. But what we see

  183. in Philippians

  184. is that Paul knew

  185. these people very well

  186. that he writes to.

  187. And so as well as

  188. visiting this church

  189. which is right on the top

  190. of the Aegean Sea

  191. between Turkey

  192. and Greece

  193. right at the top

  194. on the coast,

  195. this is where Philippi is.

  196. We read about it

  197. actually in the beginning

  198. of Acts 16

  199. or throughout Acts 16

  200. we get an account

  201. by Luke

  202. of how Paul

  203. was involved

  204. in the planting

  205. of that church

  206. and how the Lord

  207. established the church

  208. there.

  209. But what we see

  210. is

  211. throughout this letter

  212. is this key theme

  213. of joy.

  214. The word is found

  215. 16 times

  216. throughout the letter.

  217. There's other words

  218. as well like

  219. fellowship

  220. and partnership

  221. and gospel

  222. that are repeated

  223. all the way.

  224. But in all of this joy

  225. we have no doubt

  226. that even as this letter

  227. is being penned

  228. Paul is suffering.

  229. He's languishing

  230. in prison.

  231. He was attacked

  232. by those who opposed

  233. his message about Jesus

  234. whilst he was in prison.

  235. We know in other parts

  236. of the New Testament

  237. that he was beaten

  238. he was imprisoned

  239. he was shipwrecked

  240. throughout his ministry

  241. all because of this

  242. grand motivation

  243. of his

  244. to communicate

  245. the gospel

  246. of the Lord Jesus.

  247. And yet we read

  248. of a man

  249. who had

  250. the capacity

  251. to look beyond

  252. this very real

  253. suffering

  254. in his life.

  255. His focus

  256. did not rest

  257. on the pain

  258. that comes

  259. from being a Christian

  260. and a witness

  261. to the gospel.

  262. He was looking

  263. beyond it.

  264. He was looking

  265. beyond his

  266. difficult circumstances.

  267. And so

  268. what does Paul

  269. tell us

  270. about his

  271. understanding

  272. of his

  273. very real

  274. suffering?

  275. Let's just go

  276. through the text.

  277. First of all

  278. verses 12 to 14.

  279. Remember the heading

  280. for this sermon

  281. this morning

  282. is Paul's

  283. perspective

  284. on suffering.

  285. And the first thing

  286. we see is

  287. he explains

  288. to the Philippians

  289. in verses

  290. 12 to 14

  291. that his

  292. suffering

  293. was firstly

  294. advancing

  295. the gospel.

  296. Paul could

  297. see

  298. that his

  299. difficult

  300. circumstances

  301. meant

  302. that Jesus

  303. was being

  304. discussed

  305. and gossiped

  306. about

  307. when if Paul

  308. hadn't been

  309. in prison

  310. that wouldn't

  311. have happened.

  312. Look at

  313. verse 12.

  314. I want you

  315. to know

  316. brothers

  317. that what

  318. has happened

  319. to me

  320. has really

  321. served to

  322. advance the

  323. gospel.

  324. You see

  325. the good

  326. news

  327. to all

  328. people

  329. that everyone

  330. needs to hear

  331. the truth

  332. concerning

  333. people

  334. and the truth

  335. concerning

  336. God

  337. as revealed

  338. through his

  339. son

  340. Paul was

  341. passionate

  342. about that

  343. good news.

  344. So much

  345. so

  346. that it

  347. relieved

  348. his pain

  349. as he

  350. remained

  351. locked up

  352. to know

  353. that the

  354. gospel was

  355. being advanced

  356. even through

  357. his circumstance

  358. that he was

  359. in.

  360. And wherever

  361. he was

  362. we don't

  363. know exactly

  364. he was either

  365. on the coast

  366. in Caesarea

  367. Philippi

  368. or he may

  369. have been

  370. at Rome

  371. and we're

  372. not sure

  373. or even

  374. Ephesus

  375. in prison.

  376. But what we

  377. know is

  378. that he

  379. is delighted

  380. to know

  381. that the

  382. local

  383. Roman

  384. guard

  385. around

  386. that prison

  387. and everyone

  388. around it

  389. knew that

  390. Paul was

  391. in prison

  392. in front

  393. of them

  394. there

  395. because of

  396. what he

  397. said about

  398. Jesus.

  399. Jesus

  400. was being

  401. proclaimed

  402. as alive

  403. and glorified

  404. by Paul.

  405. The one

  406. that Jerusalem

  407. wanted dead

  408. was alive

  409. and would

  410. save people

  411. from their

  412. sins

  413. right in

  414. that circumstance

  415. where Paul

  416. was imprisoned.

  417. And Paul

  418. found that

  419. a source

  420. of joy

  421. in his

  422. suffering

  423. that some

  424. more people

  425. had the

  426. opportunity

  427. to hear

  428. the good

  429. news

  430. of Jesus

  431. Christ.

  432. That's

  433. massive

  434. isn't it?

  435. As I

  436. contemplated

  437. this again

  438. recently

  439. this week

  440. there's a

  441. whole

  442. revolution

  443. going on

  444. in Paul's

  445. psyche

  446. as it

  447. must in

  448. all of

  449. our

  450. psyches

  451. as

  452. Christians.

  453. He's not

  454. saying

  455. what about

  456. me?

  457. There's a

  458. selflessness

  459. here in

  460. Paul

  461. just in

  462. verses 12

  463. to 14

  464. there's a

  465. kindness

  466. for people

  467. there's a

  468. humility

  469. where Paul

  470. is no

  471. longer at

  472. the center

  473. of Paul

  474. Christ

  475. is.

  476. The good

  477. news

  478. is.

  479. The gospel

  480. is.

  481. Paul no

  482. longer

  483. worships

  484. himself.

  485. He

  486. worships

  487. the living

  488. Jesus.

  489. And that's

  490. why he can

  491. say in

  492. verse 12

  493. guess what

  494. guys?

  495. what's

  496. happened to

  497. me?

  498. It's

  499. advancing

  500. the

  501. gospel.

  502. Isn't

  503. that amazing?

  504. Look at

  505. verse 14.

  506. Because of

  507. my chains

  508. most of

  509. the brothers

  510. in the

  511. Lord have

  512. been

  513. encouraged

  514. to speak

  515. the word

  516. of God

  517. more

  518. courageously

  519. and more

  520. fearlessly.

  521. You see

  522. Paul's

  523. present

  524. pain

  525. was also

  526. doing

  527. something

  528. else.

  529. Not only

  530. was it

  531. advancing

  532. the gospel

  533. but it

  534. was also

  535. how it

  536. was happening

  537. was it

  538. was opening

  539. up the

  540. message of

  541. the gospel

  542. in this

  543. very specific

  544. way.

  545. In this

  546. bad situation

  547. Paul

  548. was encouraging

  549. those younger

  550. in the faith

  551. to speak up

  552. not by him

  553. telling them

  554. but by them

  555. hearing of

  556. his situation.

  557. His example

  558. was an

  559. inspiration

  560. to those

  561. who partnered

  562. with him

  563. in the

  564. gospel.

  565. There was

  566. a fearlessness

  567. to witness

  568. to the

  569. living

  570. Christ.

  571. And we

  572. can become

  573. more confident

  574. in the gospel

  575. fearless

  576. dare I say

  577. especially

  578. as we're

  579. inspired by

  580. those who

  581. have gone

  582. before us.

  583. And how

  584. can we be

  585. inspired by

  586. those who

  587. have gone

  588. before us?

  589. Well we read

  590. about the

  591. apostles,

  592. we read

  593. about Paul

  594. as we

  595. get into

  596. the word,

  597. as we

  598. get into

  599. the example

  600. of Paul's

  601. life.

  602. That can

  603. be an

  604. inspiration

  605. for us

  606. to be

  607. fearless

  608. Christians

  609. today.

  610. But also

  611. as we

  612. look around

  613. us in

  614. the church

  615. and we

  616. hear

  617. accounts

  618. of people

  619. witnessing

  620. to Christ.

  621. Maybe even

  622. at cost,

  623. great cost,

  624. within a

  625. family that

  626. is opposed

  627. to the

  628. gospel and

  629. yet there

  630. is one

  631. light,

  632. there is

  633. one Christian

  634. there in

  635. that family.

  636. It can be

  637. an encouragement

  638. to us,

  639. can't it?

  640. And in

  641. our day

  642. and our

  643. age,

  644. we need

  645. Christians

  646. to inspire

  647. us to

  648. continue on

  649. in our

  650. witness.

  651. Verse 14,

  652. it reminds

  653. us,

  654. doesn't it,

  655. that we

  656. need good

  657. examples of

  658. evangelists,

  659. people who

  660. are willing

  661. to speak

  662. up for

  663. Christ.

  664. And our

  665. fearlessness

  666. for Christ

  667. can be

  668. encouraged

  669. through

  670. these

  671. examples

  672. of

  673. others

  674. and

  675. that's

  676. why

  677. we

  678. need

  679. Christian

  680. biographies

  681. to read

  682. as well.

  683. Are you

  684. going on

  685. holiday?

  686. Have you

  687. been on

  688. holiday yet?

  689. Just seek

  690. out,

  691. bring a

  692. Christian

  693. biography,

  694. an account

  695. of somebody

  696. who at

  697. the cost

  698. of everything

  699. went and

  700. served

  701. Christ,

  702. maybe

  703. cross-cultural,

  704. read something

  705. like that

  706. because it

  707. can inspire

  708. us to be

  709. fearless as

  710. we come

  711. back home

  712. again and

  713. serve in

  714. our local

  715. churches.

  716. I don't

  717. know if

  718. you've

  719. watched

  720. Show Me

  721. Age

  722. now,

  723. Spartacus,

  724. that film

  725. from the

  726. early 60s

  727. by Kirk

  728. Douglas,

  729. and you

  730. know the

  731. line,

  732. don't you,

  733. when the

  734. centurion

  735. catches all

  736. of the

  737. men in

  738. chains and

  739. wants to

  740. know which

  741. one is

  742. Spartacus.

  743. And one

  744. stands up

  745. and says,

  746. well,

  747. I'm

  748. Spartacus,

  749. and then

  750. somebody else

  751. says,

  752. well,

  753. I'm

  754. Spartacus,

  755. and before

  756. you know it,

  757. they're all

  758. saying,

  759. I'm

  760. Spartacus.

  761. It's that

  762. powerful moment

  763. in the film

  764. where everybody

  765. is confident

  766. enough to

  767. identify with

  768. the one the

  769. Romans actually

  770. want to

  771. imprison.

  772. And this

  773. is what's

  774. happening,

  775. this is the

  776. dynamic of

  777. what's happening

  778. as Paul

  779. languishes

  780. in prison.

  781. we know

  782. that he

  783. was suffering.

  784. We see

  785. that in

  786. other parts

  787. of the

  788. letter.

  789. He refers

  790. to this

  791. fear of

  792. sorrow

  793. upon

  794. sorrow

  795. if the

  796. elder

  797. who came

  798. from

  799. Philippi,

  800. Epaphroditus,

  801. had died

  802. because he'd

  803. taken very

  804. ill when

  805. he visited

  806. Paul.

  807. And at

  808. times we

  809. know that

  810. Paul felt

  811. alone as

  812. this pioneer

  813. missionary of

  814. the gospel

  815. of God

  816. to the

  817. world.

  818. But we

  819. see that

  820. in this

  821. prison cell

  822. he is

  823. joyful

  824. because

  825. others are

  826. inspired to

  827. speak out

  828. with Paul's

  829. message

  830. courageously

  831. no matter

  832. what the

  833. cost.

  834. You see

  835. the gospel

  836. was propagating

  837. itself

  838. through the

  839. Holy Spirit

  840. as Paul

  841. expressed

  842. this joy

  843. of knowing

  844. the gospel

  845. was advancing

  846. through him

  847. being there

  848. and through

  849. others being

  850. inspired to

  851. speak up

  852. for Christ

  853. because they

  854. knew he

  855. was there.

  856. Maybe just

  857. turn quickly

  858. to Romans

  859. 8 to

  860. get the

  861. real rich

  862. perspective

  863. of where

  864. Paul's coming

  865. from in

  866. all of

  867. this.

  868. Romans 8

  869. just verses

  870. 17 and

  871. 18.

  872. Here's

  873. what can

  874. drive us

  875. to have

  876. the same

  877. perspective

  878. as Paul

  879. in our

  880. suffering.

  881. Or maybe

  882. just verse

  883. 18 of

  884. Romans 8.

  885. Paul just

  886. says as

  887. he thinks

  888. about the

  889. future glory

  890. to come

  891. that is

  892. reserved for

  893. him as a

  894. Christian.

  895. He says

  896. I consider

  897. that our

  898. present

  899. sufferings are

  900. not worth

  901. comparing with

  902. the glory

  903. that will be

  904. revealed in

  905. us.

  906. That's

  907. Paul's

  908. perspective

  909. and it's

  910. what keeps

  911. him faithful

  912. to his

  913. gospel

  914. proclamation

  915. even as

  916. it results

  917. in him

  918. being in

  919. chains.

  920. Can we

  921. have that

  922. perspective?

  923. Considering

  924. our present

  925. sufferings

  926. even if

  927. they're

  928. connected

  929. to our

  930. witness as

  931. Christians

  932. as not

  933. worth comparing

  934. to what is

  935. reserved for

  936. us as

  937. Christians.

  938. So we

  939. see that

  940. Paul's

  941. perspective

  942. on suffering

  943. means that

  944. he understands

  945. that the

  946. gospel is

  947. advanced in

  948. verses 12

  949. to 14.

  950. What about

  951. verses 15

  952. to 18?

  953. We also

  954. see something

  955. interesting

  956. that even

  957. Paul's own

  958. assassination of

  959. character

  960. advances the

  961. gospel.

  962. In verses

  963. 15 to 18

  964. we read

  965. that there's

  966. a lot of

  967. argy-bargy

  968. going on

  969. as Paul

  970. is in

  971. prison as

  972. well.

  973. You see

  974. Paul was

  975. also aware

  976. of those

  977. opposed to

  978. him as

  979. a leader

  980. or just

  981. as Paul.

  982. And he

  983. describes

  984. these people

  985. as those

  986. who were

  987. publicly

  988. proclaiming

  989. Jesus

  990. but maybe

  991. for the

  992. wrong reasons.

  993. Some of

  994. them he

  995. refers to

  996. preaching

  997. the gospel

  998. maybe or

  999. proclaiming

  1000. the gospel

  1001. in some

  1002. way out

  1003. of envy

  1004. and rivalry

  1005. with Paul.

  1006. There was

  1007. some bad

  1008. blood.

  1009. There was

  1010. some opposition.

  1011. There were

  1012. those who

  1013. were competing

  1014. with Paul

  1015. and seeking

  1016. to undermine

  1017. his ministry.

  1018. They were

  1019. maybe even

  1020. in the church

  1021. proclaiming

  1022. Jesus

  1023. for the

  1024. wrong reasons

  1025. out of a

  1026. selfish ambition

  1027. with insincere

  1028. hearts

  1029. thinking that

  1030. they would

  1031. make more

  1032. trouble for

  1033. Paul whilst

  1034. he was in

  1035. prison even.

  1036. And of

  1037. course

  1038. can you

  1039. imagine how

  1040. that would

  1041. feel when

  1042. you're in

  1043. that powerless

  1044. place in

  1045. a cell.

  1046. That's when

  1047. those things

  1048. can really

  1049. get to you

  1050. and you

  1051. really do

  1052. suffer

  1053. psychologically

  1054. perhaps as

  1055. you feel

  1056. let down

  1057. and abused

  1058. by those

  1059. outside the

  1060. cell.

  1061. There's no doubt

  1062. that Paul must

  1063. have been

  1064. deeply hurt

  1065. and there's

  1066. no doubt

  1067. we can see

  1068. that sin

  1069. was prevalent

  1070. even in the

  1071. church as

  1072. Paul was

  1073. languishing in

  1074. prison.

  1075. And also

  1076. there would

  1077. have been

  1078. those who

  1079. were belittling

  1080. the gospel

  1081. that Paul

  1082. was in

  1083. prison for.

  1084. There were

  1085. the Judaizers

  1086. Paul's

  1087. constant thorn

  1088. in his

  1089. side who

  1090. kept saying

  1091. and he

  1092. keeps dealing

  1093. with in his

  1094. letters there

  1095. were this

  1096. group who

  1097. kept saying

  1098. that yes

  1099. it's great

  1100. to be a

  1101. Christian but

  1102. you need to

  1103. add all of

  1104. our Old

  1105. Testament

  1106. traditions as

  1107. well really

  1108. to believe in

  1109. the gospel.

  1110. And they kept

  1111. saying this to

  1112. the Greeks who

  1113. were coming from

  1114. a pagan background

  1115. coming into

  1116. the church and

  1117. they were

  1118. saying oh it's

  1119. great that you

  1120. know Jesus but

  1121. have you been

  1122. circumcised?

  1123. Have you gone

  1124. through this?

  1125. Are you making

  1126. sure that you're

  1127. ceremonially clean?

  1128. They were a real

1129. pain in the neck to

  1130. Paul and his

  1131. ministry because

  1132. their practice and

  1133. their teaching was

  1134. undermining the

  1135. gospel of Christ.

  1136. And they were

  1137. jumping up as well

  1138. at this time.

  1139. Paul writes about

  1140. them in chapter 3

  1141. of the letter.

  1142. They were taking

  1143. the opportunity to

  1144. say well you see

  1145. this proves that

  1146. what Paul says

  1147. is wrong.

  1148. They were

  1149. preaching this

  1150. Jewish tradition

  1151. was needed for

  1152. a person to be

  1153. saved.

  1154. But in verse 18

  1155. here is Paul's

  1156. conclusion to

  1157. all of the

  1158. argy-bargy.

  1159. To all of the

  1160. trouble that's

  1161. connected as well

  1162. to him being in

  1163. prison.

  1164. What does he

  1165. say?

  1166. He has come to

  1167. a position in his

  1168. mind hasn't he?

  1169. In verse 18

  1170. despite all the

  1171. sinful motives and

  1172. the fallen rhetoric

  1173. of people he's

  1174. saying that Christ

  1175. is being preached.

  1176. Christ is being

  1177. put on the map.

  1178. Christ is being

  1179. referred to.

  1180. And so even as

  1181. he is being hurt,

  1182. even as he is

  1183. being publicly

  1184. slighted and

  1185. receiving this

  1186. character assassination

  1187. as a person,

  1188. Paul is saying

  1189. yeah, it's

  1190. okay.

  1191. Because Christ

  1192. is being

  1193. referred to.

  1194. That means

  1195. even as the

  1196. gospel is being

  1197. explained by

  1198. those who

  1199. reject it.

  1200. Well you see

  1201. this is what

  1202. Paul believes

  1203. back in prison

  1204. and they may

  1205. have been

  1206. explaining.

  1207. Paul is saying

  1208. it doesn't

  1209. matter.

  1210. Christ is

  1211. being preached.

  1212. preached.

  1213. The Spirit of God

  1214. can only have

  1215. helped Paul to

  1216. have this joyful

  1217. perspective whilst

  1218. in prison.

  1219. Even though there

  1220. were those attacking

  1221. him as they preached

  1222. Christ or as they

  1223. referred to Christ.

  1224. And Paul's

  1225. perspective on his

  1226. pain is to look

  1227. beyond the immediate

  1228. experience of that

  1229. pain in the

  1230. present, in his

  1231. circumstance, the

  1232. way people were

  1233. hurting him.

  1234. And he looks

  1235. beyond it again.

  1236. He keeps looking

  1237. at the horizon of

  1238. glory.

  1239. He is not dwelling

  1240. in the present

  1241. suffering.

  1242. He is looking

  1243. beyond it.

  1244. He could see that

  1245. the kingdom of

  1246. Christ was being

  1247. advanced no matter

  1248. what and that was

  1249. the source of his

  1250. joy.

  1251. And so we

  1252. must acknowledge

  1253. that in all

  1254. circumstances for

  1255. us this morning,

  1256. if we are

  1257. Christians, all

  1258. our circumstances

  1259. can be good

  1260. if we believe

  1261. in the sovereign

  1262. God of the

  1263. Bible.

  1264. Paul's

  1265. circumstance as a

  1266. follower of Christ

  1267. was God's

  1268. sovereign means

  1269. of saving

  1270. Paul from

  1271. death and

  1272. from hell.

  1273. And so Paul

  1274. rejoiced because

  1275. his imprisonment

  1276. meant that the

  1277. gospel was being

  1278. gossiped around.

  1279. And now we

  1280. read in verses

  1281. 15 to 18 that

  1282. Paul was joyful

  1283. because he knew

  1284. that his present

  1285. suffering was

  1286. actually part of

  1287. this process of

  1288. being Christ's

  1289. disciples.

  1290. His suffering

  1291. were reinforcing

  1292. his new identity

  1293. in Jesus.

  1294. They proved that

  1295. he was actually

  1296. like Jesus,

  1297. being led to

  1298. future glory.

  1299. And he knew

  1300. it.

  1301. He knew that

  1302. his pain was

  1303. somehow empathizing

  1304. to some degree

  1305. with the pain that

  1306. Christ went

  1307. through when

  1308. he, the creator

  1309. of the heavens and

  1310. the earth,

  1311. suffered pain for

  1312. him.

  1313. Look at verse

  1314. 19.

  1315. For I know

  1316. that through

  1317. your prayers

  1318. and the help

  1319. given by the

  1320. spirit of

  1321. Jesus Christ,

  1322. what has

  1323. happened to

  1324. me will turn

  1325. out for my

  1326. deliverance.

  1327. So we've got

  1328. to reflect on

  1329. this now,

  1330. won't we,

  1331. for a sec,

  1332. before we move

  1333. on?

  1334. What are

  1335. you doing

  1336. with your

  1337. circumstances?

  1338. What are

  1339. you doing

  1340. in your

  1341. circumstance

  1342. that you've

  1343. carried in

  1344. here this

  1345. morning?

  1346. The one

  1347. that's with

  1348. you all the

  1349. time.

  1350. The new

  1351. one that has

  1352. arrived and

  1353. you don't

  1354. want.

  1355. Are you

  1356. trying to run

  1357. away from

  1358. it?

  1359. Do you

  1360. perceive it as

  1361. some kind of

  1362. punishment from

  1363. God?

  1364. Do you see

  1365. it as a

  1366. reason to

  1367. sulk with

  1368. God and

  1369. sulk with

  1370. God's

  1371. people and

  1372. maybe disobey

  1373. him?

  1374. Back in

  1375. Romans 8,

  1376. Paul says,

  1377. doesn't he,

  1378. in verse 28,

  1379. that in

  1380. all things

  1381. God is

  1382. working out

  1383. his purposes

  1384. for those

  1385. who love

  1386. him.

  1387. Paul's

  1388. perspective on

  1389. suffering is

  1390. that God is

  1391. leading him

  1392. leading him to

  1393. glory through

  1394. his suffering

  1395. and therefore

  1396. he's looking

  1397. beyond it

  1398. and so

  1399. should we.

  1400. Keeping

  1401. perspective.

  1402. Lastly,

  1403. verses 19

  1404. to 26,

  1405. we see that

  1406. even the

  1407. prospect of

  1408. death

  1409. secures us

  1410. in the gospel

  1411. and this is

  1412. what Paul saw

  1413. as he has

  1414. this perspective

  1415. on suffering

  1416. suffering in

  1417. his life.

  1418. Look at

  1419. verse 20.

  1420. I eagerly

  1421. expect and

  1422. hope that I

  1423. will in no

  1424. way be

  1425. ashamed but

  1426. will have

  1427. sufficient

  1428. courage so

  1429. that now as

  1430. always Christ

  1431. will be

  1432. exalted in

  1433. my body

  1434. whether by

  1435. life or

  1436. by death.

  1437. Do you see

  1438. how positive

  1439. Paul is?

  1440. Paul knew

  1441. that his

  1442. pain was

  1443. as a result

  1444. of his

  1445. witness to

  1446. Christ and

  1447. to the good

  1448. news and

  1449. so he

  1450. knew that

  1451. Jesus was

  1452. being exalted

  1453. through the

  1454. suffering in

  1455. his life and

  1456. so then there

  1457. is this

  1458. overconfident

  1459. if you like

  1460. eager expectation

  1461. and future

  1462. hope in

  1463. his life

  1464. as a servant

  1465. of Jesus.

  1466. He was

  1467. confident that

  1468. he would be

  1469. able to stand

  1470. before Jesus

  1471. in the future

  1472. as one who

  1473. fought for the

  1474. cause of

  1475. Christ in

  1476. his life.

  1477. he was

  1478. looking forward

  1479. to the

  1480. reward from

  1481. Jesus as

  1482. he hid in

  1483. Christ in

  1484. the present

  1485. and represented

  1486. him.

  1487. He was

  1488. convinced and

  1489. he was

  1490. delighted in

  1491. Jesus his

  1492. savior and

  1493. he was

  1494. privileged even

  1495. to know that

  1496. he was Jesus

  1497. was being

  1498. exalted in

  1499. his body as

  1500. a prisoner of

  1501. the Lord

  1502. Jesus.

  1503. us.

  1504. But the

  1505. truth is

  1506. as Paul was

  1507. probably wrestling

  1508. with this in

  1509. his cell

  1510. pain and

  1511. suffering and

  1512. dislike and

  1513. unpopularity and

  1514. disdain as a

  1515. Christian we

  1516. don't want it

  1517. do we?

  1518. We avoid putting

  1519. ourselves into

  1520. that situation.

  1521. We maybe fear

  1522. the pain we can

  1523. receive because of

  1524. what we think

  1525. it means to

  1526. us.

  1527. But here's the

  1528. true perspective.

  1529. For Paul he

  1530. is rejoicing

  1531. knowing that

  1532. that pain of

  1533. the present

  1534. experienced because

  1535. of his public

  1536. faith in

  1537. Jesus is

  1538. leading him to

  1539. future glory.

  1540. And so he's

  1541. looking forward

  1542. to that.

  1543. He knew his

  1544. time in prison

  1545. wasn't

  1546. embarrassing.

  1547. He knew that

  1548. his suffering

  1549. wasn't

  1550. pointless.

  1551. He knew that

  1552. it was leading

  1553. him to

  1554. Christ.

  1555. Today,

  1556. do we,

  1557. the Lord's

  1558. people,

  1559. share Paul's

  1560. clear conviction

  1561. on suffering?

  1562. does our

  1563. suffering

  1564. actually

  1565. increase

  1566. our focus

  1567. and worship

  1568. on the

  1569. Lord?

  1570. Or are we

  1571. just bad

  1572. tempered

  1573. Christians?

  1574. We need

  1575. him.

  1576. And we need

  1577. Paul's

  1578. perspective

  1579. or we

  1580. cannot be

  1581. active,

  1582. vital

  1583. believers

  1584. in our

  1585. churches.

  1586. others.

  1587. Much of

  1588. our lives

  1589. can be

  1590. about

  1591. focusing

  1592. on what's

  1593. most

  1594. comfortable

  1595. in the

  1596. West.

  1597. Isn't

  1598. that true?

  1599. What's

  1600. the easiest,

  1601. most lucrative

  1602. way for

  1603. me to

  1604. proceed

  1605. through life

  1606. while I'm

  1607. still here?

  1608. And of

  1609. course,

  1610. we don't

  1611. want to be

  1612. irresponsible.

  1613. We need

  1614. wisdom,

  1615. especially if

  1616. we're bringing

  1617. up children.

  1618. We need

  1619. to know

  1620. how we're

  1621. to progress

  1622. and plan

  1623. through life.

  1624. But for

  1625. Paul the

  1626. Apostle,

  1627. he has

  1628. this grand

  1629. perspective

  1630. that we

  1631. all should

  1632. own this

  1633. morning.

  1634. He

  1635. realised that

  1636. the circumstance

  1637. of his

  1638. life,

  1639. even if it

  1640. meant

  1641. chains,

  1642. was part

  1643. of this

  1644. investment

  1645. for the

  1646. future

  1647. reality

  1648. of seeing

  1649. Jesus.

  1650. His

  1651. journeys

  1652. from town

  1653. to town,

  1654. confronting

  1655. people with

  1656. the truth

  1657. in the

  1658. synagogues

  1659. of the

  1660. day,

  1661. were

  1662. confirming

  1663. the power

  1664. of the

  1665. gospel

  1666. in his

  1667. own

  1668. life.

  1669. His

  1670. future

  1671. was being

  1672. secured

  1673. as he

  1674. lived out

  1675. the gospel

  1676. even in

  1677. a prison

  1678. cell.

  1679. He was

  1680. looking

  1681. beyond

  1682. the

  1683. present.

  1684. And it

  1685. helped him

  1686. to put

  1687. his present

  1688. suffering

  1689. in

  1690. perspective.

  1691. in the

  1692. evangelical

  1693. world,

  1694. the

  1695. common

  1696. assumption

  1697. and the

  1698. common

  1699. false

  1700. doctrine

  1701. is that

  1702. if anything

  1703. bad is

  1704. happening

  1705. to us,

  1706. we must

  1707. pray it

  1708. away,

  1709. and if it

  1710. doesn't

  1711. go away,

  1712. our faith

  1713. obviously

  1714. isn't

  1715. strong

  1716. enough.

  1717. How do

  1718. we square

  1719. that common

  1720. presented

  1721. teaching in

  1722. churches

  1723. with what

  1724. Paul says

  1725. here?

  1726. Because what

  1727. Paul is

  1728. saying is

  1729. the polar

  1730. opposite to

  1731. the health,

  1732. wealth,

  1733. prosperity

  1734. gospel that

  1735. is so

  1736. common on

  1737. our TVs

  1738. and in

  1739. our churches

  1740. even in

  1741. Cork.

  1742. we can

  1743. be lifted

  1744. like

  1745. Paul's

  1746. word,

  1747. like

  1748. Paul's

  1749. life

  1750. through

  1751. the reality

  1752. of future

  1753. glory in

  1754. Christ in

  1755. our present

  1756. sufferings.

  1757. As

  1758. Christ's

  1759. subject,

  1760. Paul was

  1761. certain that

  1762. his suffering

  1763. was not in

  1764. vain.

  1765. it was

  1766. God's

  1767. route

  1768. for Paul

  1769. to enter

  1770. glory.

  1771. And because

  1772. of that

  1773. perspective,

  1774. Paul had

  1775. on his

  1776. present

  1777. pain,

  1778. I want

  1779. us to

  1780. see that

  1781. something's

  1782. happening.

  1783. Look at

  1784. verse 21.

  1785. Because

  1786. Paul didn't

  1787. just,

  1788. he's not

  1789. focusing on

  1790. the present.

  1791. Oh,

  1792. life's

  1793. tough.

  1794. How are

  1795. you getting

  1796. on?

  1797. Oh,

  1798. I'm really

  1799. struggling with

  1800. this.

  1801. He wasn't

  1802. focusing

  1803. completely on

  1804. the present

  1805. suffering.

  1806. He was

  1807. focusing on

  1808. the future,

  1809. verse 21.

  1810. For to me,

  1811. you know,

  1812. look,

  1813. this is the

  1814. sum up of

  1815. my life,

  1816. says Paul.

  1817. For me,

  1818. well,

  1819. you know,

  1820. it's either

  1821. to live,

  1822. live is

  1823. Christ,

  1824. and whatever

  1825. that means,

  1826. including

  1827. prison,

  1828. and to

  1829. die is

  1830. gravy.

  1831. To die

  1832. is gain.

  1833. here's the

  1834. great

  1835. summarizing

  1836. verse of

  1837. the suffering

  1838. Christian.

  1839. Here's the

  1840. glorious

  1841. context in

  1842. which Paul

  1843. places his

  1844. sufferings in

  1845. prison.

  1846. And so for

  1847. us,

  1848. friends,

  1849. it reminds

  1850. us that

  1851. we are

  1852. in a

  1853. victorious

  1854. life.

  1855. Not

  1856. because of

  1857. us,

  1858. but because

  1859. our life

  1860. is in

  1861. Christ.

  1862. Christ.

  1863. And that's

  1864. what we

  1865. can say

  1866. this morning

  1867. if we're

  1868. in Christ

  1869. this morning.

  1870. If we're

  1871. identifying

  1872. with his

  1873. death as

  1874. our death,

  1875. his resurrection

  1876. as our

  1877. resurrection,

  1878. as his

  1879. defeat over

  1880. our sins,

  1881. as something

  1882. we understand

  1883. and believe

  1884. in,

  1885. if we

  1886. understand

  1887. that,

  1888. his life

  1889. is our

  1890. life.

  1891. And so as

  1892. you go on

  1893. into verses

  1894. 22 to

  1895. 36,

  1896. we read

  1897. this wonderful

  1898. bubbling

  1899. debate that

  1900. Paul has

  1901. in the

  1902. cell between

  1903. toying in

  1904. his own

  1905. mind with

  1906. what's best,

  1907. I'm not

  1908. sure,

  1909. all hinging

  1910. on verse

  1911. 21.

  1912. To paraphrase,

  1913. he's going,

  1914. well look,

  1915. on the one

  1916. hand,

  1917. if I stay

  1918. alive,

  1919. that means

  1920. serving Jesus,

  1921. and that

  1922. means being

  1923. fruitful for

  1924. God,

  1925. which is

  1926. going to

  1927. be rewarded.

  1928. Or on

  1929. the other

  1930. hand,

  1931. well maybe

  1932. if I die

  1933. tomorrow,

  1934. if they

  1935. execute me,

  1936. I'm

  1937. immediately

  1938. caught up

  1939. into the

  1940. presence of

  1941. the Lord

  1942. Jesus,

  1943. which is

  1944. going to

  1945. be wonderful.

  1946. Which one

  1947. will I

  1948. choose?

  1949. I don't

  1950. really

  1951. know.

  1952. I tell

  1953. you what,

  1954. I'd like

  1955. to stay

  1956. alive,

  1957. because it

  1958. means I

  1959. can be a

  1960. blessing to

  1961. you,

  1962. says Paul.

  1963. And he

  1964. shares this

  1965. loving decision

  1966. as a

  1967. pastor to

  1968. this church

  1969. that he

  1970. saw formed.

  1971. He says,

  1972. look I want

  1973. to stay on

  1974. earth,

  1975. I want to

  1976. minister to

  1977. you,

  1978. I want

  1979. to see

  1980. you encouraged

  1981. through my

  1982. ministry to

  1983. you,

  1984. so that

  1985. your faith

  1986. progresses in

  1987. joy.

  1988. And when we

  1989. see each

  1990. other in

  1991. the flesh

  1992. again,

  1993. I can

  1994. witness your

  1995. joy.

  1996. But either

  1997. way,

  1998. I'm a

  1999. winner.

  2000. Do you

  2001. see,

  2002. friends,

  2003. how even

  2004. in the

  2005. worst

  2006. circumstances

  2007. that you

  2008. may have

  2009. brought in

  2010. here this

  2011. morning,

  2012. we are

  2013. in a

  2014. victorious

  2015. position as

  2016. Christ's

  2017. eternal

  2018. friends.

  2019. Even in

  2020. the pit of

  2021. despair,

  2022. even in

  2023. the depth

  2024. of sickness,

  2025. when we

  2026. are rejected

  2027. because of

  2028. our faith,

  2029. even as we

  2030. face death.

  2031. We are in

  2032. Christ,

  2033. and Christ

  2034. is in us,

  2035. meeting us

  2036. on either

  2037. side of

  2038. eternity.

  2039. He's meeting

  2040. us now in

  2041. the present

  2042. of his

  2043. children.

  2044. He meets

  2045. us when we

  2046. pass into

  2047. his presence

  2048. in eternity.

  2049. we are

  2050. with him.

  2051. And so

  2052. it's all

  2053. about him.

  2054. And it's

  2055. all about

  2056. where we

  2057. have placed

  2058. him in

  2059. our lives.

  2060. And so

  2061. this morning,

  2062. if you

  2063. have resolved

  2064. to be a

  2065. worshipper of

  2066. the Lord

  2067. Jesus Christ,

  2068. if we

  2069. resolve to

  2070. make him

  2071. our focus

  2072. rather than

  2073. ourselves,

  2074. he gives

  2075. us this

  2076. glorious

  2077. perspective

  2078. in our

  2079. present pain.

  2080. And through

  2081. this passage

  2082. that Paul

  2083. was inspired

  2084. to write

  2085. as he sat

  2086. in chains,

  2087. he's actually

  2088. living out

  2089. this teaching.

  2090. He's not

  2091. just preaching

  2092. it from a

  2093. pulpit.

  2094. And it's

  2095. one of his

  2096. more joyful

  2097. letters.

  2098. so

  2099. what

  2100. does

  2101. this

  2102. give us

  2103. in the

  2104. present,

  2105. in the

  2106. face of

  2107. whatever we

  2108. face in

  2109. this life?

  2110. Friends,

  2111. I want to

  2112. encourage you

  2113. this morning

  2114. as we

  2115. go that

  2116. you can

  2117. go out

  2118. of here

  2119. joyful.

  2120. And that's

  2121. a huge

  2122. thing to

  2123. say because

  2124. I don't

  2125. know about

  2126. you,

  2127. but I

  2128. know for

  2129. me I

  2130. can very

  2131. easily be

  2132. joyless

  2133. because of

  2134. present

  2135. circumstances

  2136. and whatever

  2137. else.

  2138. But actually

  2139. we ought

  2140. to leave

  2141. here joyful

  2142. if we

  2143. worship the

  2144. Lord Jesus

  2145. Christ.

  2146. We ought

  2147. to leave

  2148. here full

  2149. of hope

  2150. and even

  2151. dignity

  2152. as a

  2153. child of

  2154. the living

  2155. God.

  2156. We can

  2157. suffer with

  2158. joy,

  2159. with hope

  2160. and with

  2161. dignity

  2162. and that

  2163. in itself

  2164. is pointing

  2165. others to

  2166. Jesus for

  2167. those who

  2168. know maybe

  2169. the bad

  2170. stuff that's

  2171. going on in

  2172. our lives.

  2173. things.

  2174. But like

  2175. Paul in

  2176. the face

  2177. of our

  2178. hardships we

  2179. can be

  2180. secure in

  2181. our sufferings

  2182. safe in

  2183. the knowledge

  2184. that the

  2185. Lord who

  2186. allows us

  2187. to experience

  2188. hardships as

  2189. well as

  2190. pleasure he is

  2191. using it all

  2192. to guide us

  2193. home to

  2194. him.

  2195. So may

  2196. we all

  2197. share in

  2198. Paul's

  2199. perspective on

  2200. suffering whether

  2201. it's suffering

  2202. for our

  2203. witness to

  2204. him or

  2205. even because

  2206. it's just

  2207. suffering because

  2208. we're human

  2209. beings.

  2210. May it all

  2211. contribute to

  2212. our progressing

  2213. faith in

  2214. him that

  2215. leads us to

  2216. glory.

  2217. Amen.

  2218. Amen.

  2219. Can I pray

  2220. and then hand

  2221. over?

  2222. Yeah.

  2223. Let's pray.

  2224. To live is

  2225. Christ.

  2226. To die is

  2227. gain.

  2228. Heavenly Father

  2229. we thank you

  2230. for your word

  2231. to us this

  2232. morning.

  2233. We pray that

  2234. it would reach

  2235. the very depth

  2236. of our souls

  2237. the very depth

  2238. of our hearts

  2239. and minds.

  2240. Lord we

  2241. come here

  2242. with real

  2243. problems and

  2244. with real

  2245. causes for

  2246. concern and

  2247. varying degrees

  2248. of suffering.

  2249. But we pray

  2250. Lord that you

  2251. would help us

  2252. to gain a

  2253. right perspective

  2254. on those

  2255. things so

  2256. that you may

  2257. continue that

  2258. great work in

  2259. us as we

  2260. trust in you

  2261. despite it all.

  2262. help us to

  2263. be confident

  2264. Christians

  2265. in these

  2266. days.

  2267. Help us to

  2268. continue witnessing

  2269. to you no

  2270. matter what the

  2271. cost.

  2272. And bless us

  2273. Lord as your

  2274. people in this

  2275. part of the

  2276. world.

  2277. Bless Tim

  2278. Week and

  2279. Summer Bible

  2280. Week and

  2281. Lord we just

  2282. pray that you

  2283. would continue

  2284. to protect us

  2285. and grow us

  2286. as a family

  2287. of churches

  2288. in this

  2289. area.

  2290. Thank you for

  2291. all that you're

  2292. doing and

  2293. thank you that

  2294. you are speaking

  2295. to us as

  2296. individuals even

  2297. now through

  2298. your word.

  2299. In Jesus name.

  2300. Amen.

  2301. Amen.

  2302. Amen.

  2303. Amen.

  2304. Amen.

  2305. Amen.

  2306. Thanks very

  2307. much Andy.

  2308. I don't know

  2309. about you but

  2310. it was a great

  2311. encouragement for

  2312. me to hear about

  2313. Paul even

  2314. through his

  2315. suffering.

  2316. The gospel was

  2317. advanced.

  2318. Even because he

  2319. was in prison

  2320. people were

  2321. as Andy put it

  2322. gossiping

  2323. about Jesus.

  2324. It was a great

  2325. encouragement for

  2326. me anyway to

  2327. take from today

  2328. that no matter

  2329. what you're going

  2330. through God

  2331. will ensure that

  2332. his gospel is

  2333. being proclaimed.

  2334. So we're going

  2335. to finish with

  2336. our final song

  2337. it's Knowing

  2338. You.

  2339. So thanks Mary.

  2340. This song is

  2341. actually based

  2342. on a passage

  2343. in Philippines

  2344. Philippians chapter

  2345. three.

  2346. So if you flick

  2347. to the last

  2348. verse of the

  2349. of the song.
