  1. So this is Kevin, Kevin O'Connor, for those who don't know Kevin.

  2. A word of advice this morning, Kevin, beyond your best behaviour.

  3. Alright.

  4. Your in-laws are here.

  5. My in-laws are here.

  6. Yeah, yeah, okay.

  7. Kevin O'Connor from Valancholic, what do you do day-to-day, do you job, work?

  8. Yeah, so, morning everybody.

  9. I work for an IT services company.

  10. We rent out nerdy engineers to larger companies.

  11. And my job is sales.

  12. So I basically am in charge of getting people to order our engineers and keep them busy.

  13. So that's what I do day-to-day.

  14. So I like it.

  15. And you're involved in your church in Valancholic.

  16. Yeah.

  17. What do you do there?

  18. Yeah, so I preach there from time to time.

  19. But kind of week-to-week, I've been involved in kind of leading worship and just helping out with whatever needs to be done.

  20. So, yeah.

  21. I've been there.

  22. I was, since I've been a Christian, I've been in that church.

  23. So it's nice to feel at home in a church like that.

  24. That's brilliant.

  25. Well, we're going to pray for you and for us all this morning as you come to speak.

  26. Let's pray.

  27. Father God, we thank you for your word to us that has been written, recorded, so that we can hear your voice to us today.

  28. Thank you for your servants, for people like Kevin, for the gifts that you have given to him to explain and teach your word.

  29. We pray that through Kevin, we would know you speaking to us today, Father.

  30. And that we would understand, not just with our minds, but that you would change our lives to be more like Christ.

  31. So help us all today, we ask in Jesus' name.

  32. Amen.

  33. Amen.

  34. Well, good morning, everybody.

  35. If you'd like to turn your Bibles to the book of Philippians, so following on from your previous weeks, we'll be looking at the book of Philippians, particularly chapter 2.

  36. So you can be turned there in your Bibles.

  37. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. It's very good to be with you again.

  40. So thank you, Johnny and team, for the invitation to come back and to preach again.

  41. It's good to be with you.

  42. It's page 1179 in the Church Bibles as well.

  43. Page 1179.

  44. And we'll be looking at Philippians chapter 2, verses 1 to 11.

    Philippians 2:1–11

  45. So Philippians chapter 2, verses 1 to 11.

    Philippians 2:1–11

  46. I'll read through it, and we'll pause for a moment of prayer, and then we'll get stuck in.

  47. Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,

  48. then make my joy is to be with you, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

  49. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.

  50. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves.

  51. Not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interests of the others.

  52. In your relations with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus, who being in the very nature, who being in very nature, God,

  53. did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage.

  54. Rather, he made himself nothing.

  55. By taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness, and being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself.

  56. He, by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.

  57. Therefore, God has exalted him to the highest place, and gave him the name that is above every name,

  58. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

  59. and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  60. Father, we thank you so much for preserving your word for us, that we can read it in a language we understand.

  61. We pray, Father, that you would help us by your Holy Spirit.

  62. Be with us, we pray, for our joy in you, Lord, and for your glory in us. Amen.

  63. I'm very excited this morning.

  64. I really love this text, and so I'm really glad I was assigned this text,

  65. and when I got the email from Johnny, I thought this is a good one to get.

  66. So I'm very, very glad.

  67. I'd like to state up front what we'll be thinking about, or what we'll be looking at in this passage.

  68. So, if you'd like to give titles to things, then the title I would put on this is

  69. The Necessity of Humility in the Service of Christ.

  70. I'll say that again.

  71. The Necessity of Humility in the Service of Christ.

  72. Now, because you've been going through Philippians, those of you who have been here the past few weeks,

  73. you're probably very familiar with the background,

  74. but just in case, it's no harm to jog our memories and go over some of the background,

  75. the context of this letter, before we actually go into what Paul is saying.

  76. So let's have a quick look at just the background of it.

  77. So as I mentioned, the Apostle Paul wrote this letter,

  78. and he wrote it to the church in Philippi.

  79. Now, if you look in Acts chapter 16, we can read there that the Philippian church was the first church

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  80. to be planted by Paul and his team in modern-day Europe.

  81. It's in Greece, Philippi.

  82. You can look it up on Google Maps.

  83. There it is.

  84. It's in Greece.

  85. Paul wrote this letter famously while he was in prison.

  86. Now, where was he imprisoned?

  87. We don't know for sure, but it seems our best guess is that it was in Rome.

  88. In fact, it's funny.

  89. If you Google Paul prison, whatever, there's actually a place where they say,

  90. this is the prison where he was imprisoned, and this is where St. Peter was also imprisoned,

  91. and there's like a little shrine there, and you can go and visit it.

  92. They don't know that's really the place, but I just think it's funny how oftentimes with these places,

  93. they go, that was the place where this happened, and they don't really know for sure.

  94. But anyway, beside the point.

  95. But regardless of where Paul was imprisoned, all Roman prisons of that day were pretty horrible places to be.

  96. They were nothing like today's modern prisons at all.

  97. They were poorly lit.

  98. They were damp.

  99. They were cramped and moldy.

  100. And they were run over with all types of creepy crawlies.

  101. It was not a nice place to be.

  102. It wouldn't be a place that you would put your pet dog, let alone another human being.

  103. It was a foul place for Paul to be for even a single day, let alone a few years of his life on earth.

  104. And yet it's from this dingy prison cell that we get this joyful letter.

  105. Can you imagine being at the church in Philippi when this letter arrived?

  106. Everybody come around, we're going to read out.

  107. Paul just wrote us a letter.

  108. He's in prison, as you know.

  109. We sent to Epaphroditus.

  110. He's come back now, Epaphroditus.

  111. And he's got a letter from Paul.

  112. We're going to read it out.

  113. And he's in prison, in a Roman prison.

  114. And you know what that is, or whatever, being there at the time.

  115. Everyone gathers around, eager to hear how Paul is doing in prison.

  116. And they read this letter.

  117. And Paul doesn't complain once.

  118. He doesn't moan about being stuck in a tiny room.

  119. Or that all his clothes stink from the mold.

  120. Or that he doesn't know what's going to happen next.

  121. But instead, he writes to them.

  122. And begins his letter by giving thanks to God for them.

  123. His letter starts with thanksgiving.

  124. And he goes on in chapter 1.

  125. He tells them he wants them to know that his imprisonment has actually turned out to be a really good thing.

  126. It's served to spread the gospel.

  127. So that he can actually witness to the guards and those people around him.

  128. He rejoices.

  129. And on top of that, he encourages them to rejoice in the Lord with him.

  130. He calls on them to live a life that is worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  131. Chapter 1, verse 27.

  132. And then towards the end of chapter 1, in around verse 28 onwards,

  133. he calls them to continue faithfully in suffering and defending the gospel just as he is doing.

  134. This is not the kind of letter that you would expect to get out of a Roman prison.

  135. I don't know back then, you know, nowadays when prisoners send mail, it gets read on its way out.

  136. I don't know if they did that back then, but if you imagine being one of the people reading the mail.

  137. Or this guy Paul, he's a bit of a nutcase.

  138. Reading his mail going, this guy must be insane.

  139. He's happy.

  140. This is a happy letter.

  141. But it's not that.

  142. It's because his joy, his contentment, is not based on his circumstances.

  143. It is attached to the Lord Jesus.

  144. That's what it means when he says, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

  145. I can sit in a disgusting cell and not know what's going to happen with my life.

  146. Because it is Christ who strengthens me.

  147. And so that's a bit of the background.

  148. And so I want to begin our first main heading this morning, as it were,

  149. having looked at just the verses building up to chapter 2 where we begin.

  150. I want to ask this question.

  151. What does Paul want for the Philippians?

  152. He wants unity.

  153. What does Paul want for them?

  154. He wants unity.

  155. Verse 1.

  156. He begins this passage, chapter 2, verse 1.

  157. Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ,

  158. if any comfort from his love,

  159. if any common sharing in the Spirit,

  160. if any tenderness and compassion.

  161. So he said, it's sort of a poetic way of getting their attention and saying,

  162. look, if you see God's grace at work in your life,

  163. if you answer yes to any of these questions,

  164. make my joy complete

  165. by being like-minded,

  166. having the same love,

  167. being one in Spirit and of one mind.

  168. He says, he's happy with the Philippians.

  169. He says, you want to make me super happy,

  170. full of joy,

  171. be unified.

  172. Obviously, unity is a great thing,

  173. but why is Paul asking for it here at this point in his letter?

  174. Well, in the verses just beforehand,

  175. chapter 1, verses 29 and 30,

  176. we read that the Philippians are suffering for the sake of Christ.

  177. They're involved, Paul says,

  178. in a conflict with outsiders because of their faith.

  179. The same conflict that Paul was involved in.

  180. That's why when he gets to chapter 2, verse 1,

  181. he says, so, or therefore.

  182. In other words,

  183. you're being attacked,

  184. you're under pressure from outside.

  185. Therefore,

  186. I want you to be unified.

  187. Later on in the letter as well,

  188. he also makes mention of two women,

  189. Euodia and Sintech,

  190. who are fighting.

  191. And he says, I implore you,

  192. please, come together.

  193. It's not a time,

  194. there's never a time for disunity in a church.

  195. But it is essential

  196. and key

  197. when the church is under attack,

  198. when it's under

  199. persecution,

  200. when they are suffering for the sake of the gospel,

  201. they need to be united together

  202. as a body.

  203. So there are external

  204. issues

  205. and internal strains

  206. on the unity of the church,

  207. and Paul wants them to be united.

  208. Unity,

  209. but not uniformity.

  210. To borrow an illustration

  211. from Paul's letter to Corinthians,

  212. we're one body,

  213. he uses the illustration of a body,

  214. but many parts.

  215. He says, we're not all ears,

  216. we're not all foots,

  217. we all have different purposes,

  218. but we together

  219. serve one purpose,

  220. like the different parts of a body.

  221. May I ask you a question this morning?

  222. How do you achieve church unity?

  223. If I stuck a whiteboard up here

  224. and we did a brainstorm

  225. and said,

  226. let's write down all the things

  227. that you must do

  228. to be a unified church.

  229. What would you put up on that board?

  230. Keep your fingers in Philippians,

  231. but turn over to Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  232. Ephesians chapter 4, verses 1 to 6.

    Ephesians 4:1–6

  233. I want to read you what Paul would say

  234. in answer to that question.

  235. At least in part.

  236. Ephesians chapter 4, verses 1 to 6.

    Ephesians 4:1–6

  237. Again, writing from prison.

  238. As a prisoner for the Lord, then,

  239. I urge you to live a life

  240. worthy of the calling you have received.

  241. Be completely humble and gentle.

  242. Be patient,

  243. bearing with one another in love.

  244. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit

  245. through the bond of peace.

  246. There is one body and one Spirit,

  247. just as you were called to one hope

  248. when you were called one Lord,

  249. one faith, one baptism,

  250. one God and Father of all,

  251. who is over all and through all

  252. and in all.

  253. One thing we can say for sure,

  254. you cannot have unity without truth.

  255. I think it was Luther said,

  256. unity where possible,

  257. truth at all costs.

  258. We cannot, as Christians,

  259. have unity with anyone

  260. who denies the central truths of Christianity.

  261. I cannot have fellowship

  262. with a Jehovah's Witness

  263. who tells me that Jesus is not God.

  264. That's heresy.

  265. But if I need a brother

  266. who has a different view of the end times,

  267. or has a different view

  268. of how the gifts of the Spirit

  269. are manifested in today,

  270. those are tertiary issues.

  271. But on the core truths,

  272. the virgin birth of Christ,

  273. His atoning death on the cross,

  274. His resurrection,

  275. His deity,

  276. we agree on those core truths

  277. of the Gospel,

  278. we can have fellowship.

  279. So truth is indispensable.

  280. Would you notice what he said

  281. in verse 2,

  282. and this is pointing us back

  283. to Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  284. Be completely humble and gentle.

  285. Be patient,

  286. bearing with one another in love.

  287. humility and gentleness with others.

  288. So if you turn back to Philippians 2,

  289. you'll see from verse 3 onwards now,

  290. Paul begins to drive home

  291. how absolutely necessary,

  292. or the absolute necessity of humility

  293. in our lives together.

  294. So verses 3 to 4,

  295. how do we move towards greater unity?

  296. Humble service.

  297. Verse 3,

  298. Do nothing out of selfish ambition

  299. or vain conceit,

  300. rather in humility,

  301. value others above yourselves.

  302. Not looking to your own interests,

  303. but each of you to the interests of others.

  304. I don't think I need to convince anyone

  305. in this room this morning

  306. that we live in a society

  307. that doesn't really celebrate humility

  308. all that much.

  309. We don't, do we?

  310. It's not the world we live in.

  311. In fact, the very opposite,

  312. I think, would be true.

  313. We are a radically egocentric society.

  314. To borrow a phrase from a friend of mine,

  315. we live in the age of the selfie.

  316. We have a second camera on our phones

  317. that's designed to point towards us

  318. so we can take pictures of ourselves.

  319. Do you remember when camera phones

  320. came out first?

  321. I don't remember them all having that.

  322. No, every camera phone has them.

  323. Camera on the front and camera on the back

  324. so you can take a picture of yourself.

  325. Selfishness and vain ambition

  326. are celebrated and applauded

  327. as good things in our culture.

  328. They are seen as signs of strength

  329. and success.

  330. My self-esteem is of highest importance.

  331. My happiness is the most important.

  332. I'll only believe those things

  333. that I decide are best for me.

  334. I will only be with the people

  335. who make me feel good.

  336. And to be fair,

  337. things weren't all that different

  338. in Paul's day.

  339. One of the most devastating effects

  340. of the fall of man

  341. when sin entered into humanity

  342. is that it turned us inward.

  343. Adam and Eve enjoyed a perfect marriage,

  344. but when sin entered,

  345. they ran from God

  346. and distance was between them.

  347. Apart from the grace of God,

  348. we are naturally born selfish.

  349. I don't have kids,

  350. but I know this to be a fact.

  351. Hands up any parent in here

  352. who had to teach their child

  353. to be selfish.

  354. You don't, do you?

  355. We don't have to put an effort

  356. into that one

  357. because by nature

  358. we are selfish.

  359. But part of God's work

  360. when we are born again

  361. and put our faith in Christ,

  362. he begins a new work in us.

  363. And part of that

  364. is to turn us outward again,

  365. to look to other people,

  366. not just to our own interests.

  367. You do have to take care

  368. of yourself, obviously,

  369. but to the interests of others.

  370. It's counter-cultural

  371. to do nothing

  372. out of selfish ambition

  373. or for glory for ourselves.

  374. Nothing.

  375. He doesn't say

  376. try not to do things

  377. out of selfish ambition.

  378. Paul is basically

  379. laying down a law

  380. that you can set your watch to.

  381. If you're doing something

  382. out of selfish ambition,

  383. stop.

  384. It may not be a wrong thing to do,

  385. but you're doing it wrong.

  386. If you are looking

  387. for your own glory

  388. in preaching a sermon

  389. or playing a guitar

  390. or doing anything,

  391. and that is not befitting

  392. of Christ's people.

  393. It's counter-cultural

  394. to consider other people

  395. as more important,

  396. more significant

  397. than ourselves

  398. and to truly look out

  399. for other people,

  400. genuinely look out for them.

  401. that's not normal

  402. in this world.

  403. Are you humbly serving others

  404. in this church?

  405. It's easy to be the guest preacher

  406. and ask questions like this.

  407. I have to ask these questions

  408. of myself.

  409. Am I humbly serving others

  410. in my church?

  411. Or is it possible

  412. that my selfishness

  413. is a hamper

  414. to the unity

  415. of this church?

  416. Is my ambition

  417. a blockage?

  418. Do you consider

  419. all the other people

  420. in this room

  421. right now this morning

  422. as more significant

  423. than yourself?

  424. Not just some of them,

  425. the rest,

  426. all the other people

  427. who are not you.

  428. Do you consider those people

  429. more significant

  430. than yourselves?

  431. Paul says that

  432. this is the mind of Christ.

  433. Paul goes on now

  434. for the rest of our time

  435. this morning,

  436. verses 5 to 11.

  437. Paul goes on

  438. and he lifts up

  439. Christ before us.

  440. This is the point

  441. that I'm really

  442. looking forward to.

  443. The perfect picture

  444. of humble service.

  445. I think he holds this up

  446. to us

  447. not to condemn us,

  448. not to make us

  449. grovel and say

  450. woe is me,

  451. but to say

  452. look at him.

  453. That is my saviour.

  454. That's my boss.

  455. Verses 5 to 11.

  456. Christ,

  457. the perfect

  458. humble servant.

  459. Roxy was telling me

  460. during the week

  461. she works

  462. in Mahan

  463. and

  464. the building

  465. that her

  466. business is based in

  467. is a shared building.

  468. They share that building

  469. with other businesses.

  470. Roxy,

  471. over the last few months,

  472. she's come back.

  473. She's been telling us

  474. about one of the other

  475. businesses there,

  476. the receptionist there.

  477. She's had some

  478. dealings with her

  479. and she's just been

  480. a very cranky person.

  481. The other receptionist

  482. is not my wife.

  483. This lady's been

  484. very rude to Roxy

  485. and to others.

  486. There's nothing

  487. personal to Roxy.

  488. This lady's just been

  489. very irritable,

  490. jumping down

  491. people's throats

  492. without any

  493. proof of wrong.

  494. And then it wasn't

  495. until this week,

  496. I think it was,

  497. Roxy's boss

  498. came to her

  499. and said,

  500. you do know

  501. why that is.

  502. She said,

  503. I've seen

  504. how her boss

  505. treats her.

  506. Her boss

  507. jumps down

  508. her throat.

  509. Her boss

  510. constantly

  511. talks down

  512. to her,

  513. tries to blame

  514. her for things

  515. that aren't

  516. her fault.

  517. And so the boss

  518. sets the tone

  519. for the company,

  520. doesn't he?

  521. Jesus sets

  522. the tone

  523. of humility

  524. for his church.

  525. He's our boss.

  526. He's our master

  527. and commander.

  528. And what Paul

  529. is about to tell us,

  530. I think will be

  531. humbling to us

  532. to look at

  533. what he did

  534. for us.

  535. Let's read

  536. verses 5 to 8 again.

  537. In your relationship

  538. with one another,

  539. have the same

  540. mindset

  541. as Christ Jesus,

  542. who being

  543. in very nature

  544. God,

  545. did not consider

  546. equality with God

  547. something to be used

  548. for his own advantage.

  549. Rather,

  550. he made himself

  551. nothing

  552. by taking

  553. the very nature

  554. of a servant,

  555. being made

  556. in human likeness,

  557. and being found

  558. in appearance

  559. as man.

  560. He humbled himself

  561. by becoming

  562. obedient to death,

  563. even death

  564. on a cross.

  565. This is the mindset

  566. of Christ,

  567. says Paul.

  568. This attitude,

  569. this mindset

  570. of humble service

  571. is perfectly

  572. displayed

  573. in the person

  574. and work

  575. of our Lord

  576. Jesus Christ.

  577. Christ.

  578. This is one

  579. of the most

  580. incredible passages

  581. in the whole

  582. New Testament.

  583. These verses

  584. are often referred

  585. to as the hymn

  586. of Christ

  587. because of the way

  588. that Paul

  589. structured it

  590. and the language

  591. he uses.

  592. It seems that

  593. he intended it

  594. to be a hymn

  595. that we would

  596. actually sing.

  597. It's one of the

  598. most important

  599. sections in the

  600. New Testament

  601. in teaching us

  602. about the mystery

  603. of Christ's

  604. incarnation.

  605. It's beautiful

  606. and it can be

  607. quite intricate.

  608. We were

  609. in holidays

  610. last week,

  611. we did summer

  612. holidays,

  613. and we spent

  614. one day,

  615. two weeks ago,

  616. we spent one day

  617. in Geneva.

  618. And Geneva,

  619. if you've ever

  620. been there,

  621. it's where

  622. the watchmaking

  623. world basically

  624. has its kind

  625. of home.

  626. So very high-end

  627. watches and stuff.

  628. Unfortunately,

  629. the 50 euro

  630. I had on me

  631. didn't buy me

  632. anything,

  633. especially not

  634. in Switzerland.

  635. But I love

  636. watches.

  637. I've always loved

  638. watches.

  639. I get it from my

  640. dad.

  641. I just love

  642. how they're made.

  643. I don't ever

  644. care if I own

  645. a nice watch.

  646. I don't think

  647. I ever will.

  648. I don't care.

  649. I just love

  650. how they're made.

  651. But if I held

  652. up for you

  653. a Patek Philippe

  654. watch,

  655. one of the best

  656. watchmakers in

  657. the world,

  658. and tell you,

  659. it kind of looks

  660. like this.

  661. It doesn't really,

  662. but just pretend

  663. for my own sake.

  664. It's that simple

  665. looking,

  666. okay?

  667. And it'd be worth

  668. about 40 or 50

  669. thousand euro.

  670. You said to me

  671. that's a waste of

  672. money,

  673. and we could argue

  674. about that.

  675. That's fine.

  676. I'm not saying

  677. we should buy one.

  678. But if I turned

  679. it around to you

  680. and took off the

  681. back and showed

  682. you what's inside,

  683. I think you would

  684. start to see the

  685. value of it a bit

  686. more.

  687. Hundreds and

  688. hundreds of

  689. pieces,

  690. all working in

  691. perfect harmony,

  692. handcrafted,

  693. ticking away,

  694. not machine,

  695. they're made

  696. with machines,

  697. but they're

  698. not assembled

  699. by machines.

  700. All to do

  701. one purpose,

  702. which is to

  703. tell the time

  704. perfectly.

  705. To look at it,

  706. you go,

  707. it's complicated,

  708. but it's beautiful.

  709. But the more,

  710. I'm just starting

  711. to learn a bit

  712. more about them.

  713. This analogy

  714. is going on too

  715. long,

  716. sorry.

  717. But the more

  718. you understand

  719. about them,

  720. the more precious

  721. you realize it is.

  722. Even though on the

  723. front it can look

  724. simple,

  725. its intricacy

  726. makes it more

  727. beautiful.

  728. Christ's

  729. incarnation to

  730. earth is in

  731. one sense

  732. very simple.

  733. And yet it is

  734. such a deep

  735. and profound

  736. mystery when

  737. we start to

  738. explore it.

  739. It's sort of

  740. like when you

  741. go to the

  742. Great Barrier

  743. Reef.

  744. I know

  745. someone who's,

  746. I've never been

  747. there,

  748. I know someone

  749. who's been

  750. there and

  751. they said

  752. you get to

  753. the point

  754. where there's

  755. just this

  756. big drop

  757. off the end.

  758. There's the

  759. reef which is

  760. a few feet

  761. behind you and

  762. then you swim

  763. out and it

  764. just drops

  765. off.

  766. Sort of like

  767. this with the

  768. incarnation.

  769. You wade

  770. in and you

  771. look down and

  772. you look at

  773. all the beauty

  774. that's there

  775. and it drops

  776. down beyond

  777. your understanding.

  778. Truly we'll

  779. spend eternity

  780. plumbing the

  781. depths of

  782. these things.

  783. So let's

  784. begin.

  785. Paul begins

  786. by speaking

  787. about Christ

  788. before he

  789. came to

  790. earth,

  791. the pre-incarnate

  792. Christ.

  793. The word

  794. incarnate means

  795. in the flesh,

  796. carneia means

  797. flesh,

  798. Jesus in

  799. the flesh

  800. when he

  801. became a

  802. human.

  803. So before

  804. that,

  805. verse 6,

  806. Jesus being

  807. in the very

  808. nature of

  809. God did

  810. not consider

  811. equality with

  812. God something

  813. to be used

  814. to his own

  815. advantage.

  816. Other

  817. translations say

  818. something to

  819. be grasped.

  820. Before his

  821. incarnation,

  822. Jesus was,

  823. as he always

  824. will be,

  825. fully God.

  826. Jesus is not

  827. like God,

  828. God.

  829. He is God.

  830. He is the

  831. second person

  832. of the

  833. Trinity and

  834. has existed

  835. in the

  836. fellowship of

  837. the Godhead

  838. from eternity

  839. past.

  840. Therefore,

  841. all the

  842. glory and

  843. all the

  844. worship and

  845. all the

  846. sovereign

  847. authority that

  848. is rightfully

  849. belonging to

  850. God belongs

  851. to Christ

  852. because he

  853. is God.

  854. All the

  855. privileges of

  856. divinity were

  857. and are

  858. rightfully

  859. his along

  860. with the

  861. Father and

  862. the Holy

  863. Spirit.

  864. And when it

  865. was decided

  866. by the

  867. triune God

  868. before the

  869. foundations of

  870. the world

  871. that the

  872. Father would

  873. send the

  874. Son to

  875. die to

  876. save sinners,

  877. Jesus did

  878. not protest.

  879. He didn't

  880. say, I'm

  881. not going

  882. down there.

  883. Do you

  884. realize Jesus

  885. was not

  886. obliged to

  887. save us?

  888. God did

  889. not owe

  890. us salvation.

  891. The

  892. angels fell

  893. from him

  894. and he

  895. sent them

  896. no

  897. savior.

  898. When man

  899. fell, he

  900. decreed before

  901. the foundations

  902. of the world,

  903. try and get

  904. your head

  905. around that,

  906. to send

  907. his Son in

  908. the likeness of

  909. human flesh

  910. and Jesus

  911. agreed.

  912. He left

  913. heaven.

  914. He left

  915. heaven for

  916. us.

  917. God

  918. he didn't

  919. refuse to

  920. leave the

  921. praise and

  922. glory of

  923. heaven.

  924. Rather, he

  925. made himself

  926. nothing.

  927. In verse

  928. seven, by

  929. taking the

  930. very nature

  931. of a

  932. servant.

  933. What does

  934. that mean

  935. that Jesus

  936. made himself

  937. nothing?

  938. We have to

  939. very clearly

  940. say one

  941. thing.

  942. It does

  943. not mean

  944. that Jesus

  945. emptied

  946. himself of

  947. his

  948. deity.

  949. humanity.

  950. When Jesus

  951. was incarnate,

  952. when he

  953. became a

  954. man, he

  955. added humanity

  956. to his

  957. person.

  958. He didn't

  959. swap being

  960. God for

  961. being a

  962. man.

  963. He became

  964. a man as

  965. well as

  966. being God.

  967. So what

  968. does it

  969. mean that he

  970. poured himself

  971. out, that he

  972. made himself

  973. nothing?

  974. It means that

  975. he willingly

  976. chose to

  977. set aside

  978. that glory,

  979. that worship,

  980. that sovereign

  981. authority that

  982. was rightfully

  983. his.

  984. not to

  985. get rid of

  986. it, but

  987. to set it

  988. aside.

  989. To be very

  990. clear from the

  991. language we

  992. use here,

  993. he did not

  994. set aside

  995. being God,

  996. he didn't

  997. get rid of

  998. being God

  999. or give

  1000. up, he

  1001. set aside

  1002. some of

  1003. his

  1004. privileges

  1005. and rights.

  1006. In

  1007. taking on

  1008. human flesh

  1009. as part of

  1010. his mission

  1011. to save

  1012. you and

  1013. me from

  1014. our sins,

  1015. he willingly

  1016. chose not

  1017. to exercise

  1018. his privileges

  1019. and rights

  1020. as God

  1021. to make

  1022. things easier

  1023. for himself.

  1024. When I

  1025. was in

  1026. college,

  1027. friends of

  1028. mine,

  1029. some of

  1030. the guys

  1031. in my

  1032. class,

  1033. used to

  1034. get grants

  1035. from the

  1036. government

  1037. to help

  1038. pay their

  1039. fees,

  1040. or if

  1041. they lived

  1042. far away

  1043. from the

  1044. college,

  1045. they would

  1046. get grants.

  1047. And so if

  1048. you met

  1049. the requirements,

  1050. they would

  1051. get sent

  1052. checks about

  1053. three times

  1054. a year in

  1055. the post.

  1056. When the

  1057. checks arrive

  1058. in the

  1059. post,

  1060. they usually

  1061. are right on

  1062. the same

  1063. basis,

  1064. they all

  1065. come into

  1066. college super

  1067. happy because

  1068. they just

  1069. got sent

  1070. money,

  1071. which they

  1072. probably

  1073. weren't going

  1074. to spend

  1075. on fees.

  1076. But anyway,

  1077. when they

  1078. arrived in

  1079. the post,

  1080. it was up to

  1081. them to take

  1082. the checks

  1083. and cash

  1084. them in

  1085. at the

  1086. bank.

  1087. The money

  1088. was rightfully

  1089. theirs for

  1090. the entire

  1091. time that

  1092. they were

  1093. in college,

  1094. but they had

  1095. to choose

  1096. to take

  1097. that money,

  1098. take that

  1099. check and

  1100. cash it

  1101. in.

  1102. When Jesus

  1103. came to

  1104. earth,

  1105. the checks

  1106. that were

  1107. written to

  1108. him of

  1109. praise and

  1110. glory and

  1111. honor and

  1112. full authority,

  1113. they were

  1114. still rightfully

  1115. his,

  1116. but as it

  1117. were,

  1118. he did not

  1119. cash them

  1120. in for

  1121. his own

  1122. sake.

  1123. He chose

  1124. to set

  1125. them aside.

  1126. He never,

  1127. ever exercised

  1128. his divine

  1129. power to

  1130. make life

  1131. easier for

  1132. himself.

  1133. Consider

  1134. this,

  1135. in Matthew

  1136. 4,

  1137. when Jesus

  1138. is in the

  1139. wilderness

  1140. being tempted,

  1141. he's fasting

  1142. for 40

  1143. days,

  1144. 40 nights,

  1145. and then

  1146. the devil

  1147. comes to

  1148. him.

  1149. The devil

  1150. says to

  1151. him,

  1152. if you're

  1153. the son

  1154. of God,

  1155. command

  1156. these

  1157. stones

  1158. to become

  1159. loaves

  1160. of bread.

  1161. And Jesus

  1162. refuses.

  1163. But in

  1164. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  1165. 6,

  1166. when Jesus

  1167. sees the

  1168. crowd,

  1169. when he's

  1170. preaching to

  1171. them and

  1172. he sees

  1173. that they're

  1174. hungry and

  1175. that they're

  1176. far away from

  1177. town,

  1178. they can't

  1179. get any

  1180. food,

  1181. he miraculously

  1182. makes a

  1183. feast out

  1184. of a few

  1185. loaves and

  1186. fishes.

  1187. What's the

  1188. difference?

  1189. Think of

  1190. when the

  1191. disciples were

  1192. out on the

  1193. Sea of Galilee

  1194. in a storm

  1195. about to

  1196. die,

  1197. and Jesus

  1198. gets up and

  1199. he calms the

  1200. storm for

  1201. them and

  1202. saves their

  1203. lives.

  1204. But in

  1205. the Garden

  1206. of Gethsemane,

  1207. when the

  1208. crowd come to

  1209. arrest Jesus

  1210. and Simon

  1211. Peter lobs off

  1212. the ear of

  1213. one of the

  1214. guys who

  1215. was in

  1216. the crowd,

  1217. Jesus says,

  1218. put away

  1219. your sword.

  1220. And he

  1221. says these

  1222. words,

  1223. do you

  1224. think that

  1225. I cannot

  1226. appeal to

  1227. my father

  1228. and he

  1229. will at

  1230. once send

  1231. me more

  1232. than 12

  1233. legions of

  1234. angels?

  1235. A legion is

  1236. about 3,000 to

  1237. 6,000.

  1238. That's a lot

  1239. of angels.

  1240. Jesus said,

  1241. in a word,

  1242. I could end

  1243. this.

  1244. but he

  1245. did not

  1246. because out

  1247. of his

  1248. love for

  1249. you and

  1250. for me,

  1251. he would

  1252. have broken

  1253. the rules

  1254. of engagement

  1255. if he had

  1256. done that

  1257. and he

  1258. would not

  1259. have gone

  1260. to the

  1261. cross to

  1262. die for

  1263. our sins.

  1264. It would

  1265. have been

  1266. contrary to

  1267. his mission,

  1268. going to

  1269. the cross

  1270. to die

  1271. for us.

  1272. The

  1273. Son of

  1274. Man did

  1275. not come

  1276. to be

  1277. served,

  1278. but to

  1279. serve and

  1280. to give

  1281. his life

  1282. as a

  1283. ransom for

  1284. many.

  1285. I hope

  1286. there's no

  1287. one in

  1288. this room

  1289. this morning

  1290. that doesn't

  1291. include

  1292. themselves

  1293. as in

  1294. that word

  1295. many.

  1296. I hope

  1297. that everyone

  1298. in this

  1299. room

  1300. is trusting

  1301. in Christ

  1302. as their

  1303. Savior.

  1304. Consider

  1305. the humility

  1306. of Christ

  1307. in becoming

  1308. a man.

  1309. We'll

  1310. never be

  1311. able to

  1312. fathom the

  1313. glory of

  1314. that mystery.

  1315. But as if

  1316. that were

  1317. not enough,

  1318. Paul continues

  1319. in verse

  1320. 8, he

  1321. said,

  1322. and being

  1323. found in

  1324. appearance

  1325. as man,

  1326. just look

  1327. normal,

  1328. he humbled

  1329. himself by

  1330. becoming

  1331. obedient to

  1332. death,

  1333. even death

  1334. on a

  1335. cross.

  1336. Not only

  1337. did Christ

  1338. humble

  1339. himself by

  1340. taking on

  1341. human flesh

  1342. and living

  1343. a perfect

  1344. life for

  1345. us,

  1346. but he

  1347. went far

  1348. beyond that

  1349. again and

  1350. humbled himself

  1351. to the point

  1352. that he

  1353. died for

  1354. us.

  1355. He was

  1356. obedient to

  1357. the Father's

  1358. commission to

  1359. the point of

  1360. death, but

  1361. not just any

  1362. death, death

  1363. by crucifixion.

  1364. Jesus was

  1365. absolutely

  1366. humiliated for

  1367. you.

  1368. It's the

  1369. most ignoble

  1370. and shameful

  1371. death

  1372. possible.

  1373. You're

  1374. practically

  1375. naked,

  1376. nailed onto

  1377. a propped

  1378. up piece

  1379. of wood

  1380. for everyone

  1381. to see,

  1382. flanked on

  1383. both sides

  1384. by criminals,

  1385. even though

  1386. he was

  1387. innocent.

  1388. Jesus did

  1389. that for

  1390. you.

  1391. And it

  1392. was not

  1393. just the

  1394. physical

  1395. pain that

  1396. atoned for

  1397. our sins.

  1398. Bad and

  1399. all as that

  1400. was, it

  1401. was that on

  1402. that cross,

  1403. God poured

  1404. out all of

  1405. the wrath

  1406. that we

  1407. deserved for

  1408. our sins.

  1409. God

  1410. made Jesus

  1411. who knew

  1412. no sin

  1413. to be

  1414. sin for

  1415. us.

  1416. God the

  1417. Father laid

  1418. on Jesus

  1419. the iniquity

  1420. of us

  1421. all.

  1422. God the

  1423. Father did

  1424. what the

  1425. law weakened

  1426. by the

  1427. flesh could

  1428. not do,

  1429. by sending

  1430. his own

  1431. Son in

  1432. the likeness

  1433. of sinful

  1434. flesh,

  1435. flesh,

  1436. and for

  1437. sin,

  1438. he condemned

  1439. sin in

  1440. the flesh.

  1441. All this

  1442. Jesus did

  1443. in obedience

  1444. to the

  1445. Father for

  1446. you.

  1447. Paul says

  1448. this is the

  1449. mindset of

  1450. Christ.

  1451. And he

  1452. says I

  1453. want you to

  1454. have that

  1455. mindset when

  1456. you deal

  1457. with one

  1458. another.

  1459. What did

  1460. Jesus deserve

  1461. when he

  1462. came to

  1463. earth?

  1464. God the

  1465. earth?

  1466. Could there

  1467. have been

  1468. a red

  1469. carpet long

  1470. enough?

  1471. Could there

  1472. have been

  1473. music good

  1474. enough to

  1475. welcome him?

  1476. If the

  1477. whole world

  1478. bowed down

  1479. and worshipped

  1480. to him,

  1481. it wouldn't

  1482. have been

  1483. hardly enough.

  1484. And yet he

  1485. came to a

  1486. back alley

  1487. place in the

  1488. middle of

  1489. nowhere,

  1490. essentially,

  1491. born to

  1492. humble

  1493. circumstances,

  1494. circumstances,

  1495. and lived

  1496. a life

  1497. of relative

  1498. obscurity,

  1499. ministered

  1500. for three

  1501. years,

  1502. and died,

  1503. died?

  1504. Which one

  1505. of us who

  1506. are in

  1507. Christ this

  1508. morning can

  1509. say that

  1510. any act of

  1511. obedience or

  1512. service is

  1513. beneath us?

  1514. is there

  1515. anything that

  1516. Jesus could

  1517. ask you

  1518. to do,

  1519. call you

  1520. to do in

  1521. your life,

  1522. that you

  1523. could say,

  1524. no, that is

  1525. too low for

  1526. me.

  1527. Someone else

  1528. could do

  1529. that.

  1530. Jesus has

  1531. set us the

  1532. perfect example

  1533. of humble

  1534. service,

  1535. and by

  1536. his death

  1537. and resurrection

  1538. he has

  1539. secured for

  1540. us all

  1541. the grace

  1542. that we

  1543. need to

  1544. be humble.

  1545. Jesus doesn't

  1546. just give us

  1547. a good example

  1548. and say,

  1549. try that.

  1550. He gives

  1551. us the

  1552. grace we

  1553. need by

  1554. his Holy

  1555. Spirit to

  1556. change and

  1557. to become

  1558. more humble.

  1559. we might

  1560. ask ourselves,

  1561. how can I

  1562. be a more

  1563. humble person?

  1564. That's a

  1565. good question,

  1566. but can I

  1567. offer a

  1568. better question?

  1569. How can I

  1570. serve others

  1571. in my

  1572. church or

  1573. in my

  1574. life,

  1575. those around

  1576. me,

  1577. in the way

  1578. that Jesus

  1579. has served

  1580. me?

  1581. May we

  1582. never doubt

  1583. the absolute

  1584. necessity

  1585. of humility

  1586. for unity

  1587. in our

  1588. church?

  1589. Our

  1590. risen

  1591. Savior

  1592. deserves

  1593. our

  1594. wholehearted

  1595. obedience.

  1596. In

  1597. closing,

  1598. I'd like

  1599. to read

  1600. verses 9

  1601. to 11,

  1602. and we'll

  1603. pray and

  1604. sing.

  1605. Therefore

  1606. God

  1607. exalted

  1608. him to

  1609. the highest

  1610. place,

  1611. and gave

  1612. him the

  1613. name that

  1614. is above

  1615. every name,

  1616. that at

  1617. the name

  1618. of Jesus

  1619. every knee

  1620. should bow

  1621. in heaven

  1622. and on

  1623. earth and

  1624. under the

  1625. earth,

  1626. and every

  1627. tongue

  1628. acknowledge

  1629. that Jesus

  1630. Christ is

  1631. Lord,

  1632. to the

  1633. glory of

  1634. God the

  1635. Father.

  1636. Father,

  1637. we bow

  1638. before you

  1639. in our

  1640. hearts.

  1641. We praise

  1642. you that

  1643. before the

  1644. foundations of

  1645. the world

  1646. that you

  1647. had decreed

  1648. that you

  1649. would send

  1650. your Son,

  1651. the Lord

  1652. Jesus Christ

  1653. in the

  1654. likeness of

  1655. human flesh,

  1656. that he

  1657. lived a

  1658. perfect life

  1659. for us,

  1660. and that

  1661. he died the

  1662. death that

  1663. we ought to

  1664. have died,

  1665. that he

  1666. suffered your

  1667. wrath,

  1668. which we

  1669. ought to

  1670. have suffered.

  1671. That although

  1672. there was no

  1673. one who

  1674. deserved more

  1675. praise and

  1676. glory on

  1677. that earth,

  1678. on this

  1679. earth,

  1680. that there

  1681. was no one,

  1682. Lord,

  1683. at the same

  1684. time who

  1685. showed such

  1686. perfect and

  1687. complete

  1688. humility.

  1689. I lay

  1690. down my

  1691. life for

  1692. the sheep,

  1693. he said.

  1694. No one

  1695. can take

  1696. them from

  1697. me.

  1698. Thank you,

  1699. Father,

  1700. that we are

  1701. safe in

  1702. Christ.

  1703. And Lord,

  1704. I pray,

  1705. where we are

  1706. proud,

  1707. Lord,

  1708. may we this

  1709. morning,

  1710. over the

  1711. Lord's

  1712. Supper,

  1713. as we

  1714. reflect on

  1715. Christ's

  1716. work,

  1717. may we

  1718. humble ourselves

  1719. before you,

  1720. look to our

  1721. master and

  1722. commander,

  1723. and love

  1724. one another.

  1725. Help us,

  1726. Lord,

  1727. not to be

  1728. selfish,

  1729. not to be

  1730. selfishly

  1731. ambitious,

  1732. but to

  1733. look to

  1734. the needs

  1735. of others.

  1736. Thank you

  1737. for Jesus

  1738. Christ,

  1739. our Savior

  1740. and our

  1741. Redeemer.

  1742. We pray to

  1743. you in

  1744. his name.

  1745. Amen.

  1746. I think we're

  1747. going to stand

  1748. to sing a

  1749. closing hymn,

  1750. the Serving

  1751. King.

  1752. That's a

  1753. wonderful hymn.

  1754. Amen.

  1755. It's a wonderful hymn.

  1756. Amen.

  1757. It's a wonderful hymn.
