  1. And, before we look at God's Word, let's pray together.

  2. Our Father in Heaven, we thank You for Your goodness and love.

  3. We thank You that we can come now and look at Your Word.

  4. We recognize that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable.

  5. And we pray that Your Word will prove profitable to each one of us this day.

  6. Not that, O Lord, we will be glorified, but that Your name will be glorified,

  7. that You will be honored in all that we see in Your Word.

  8. So bless, O Lord, this time around that Word. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. So would you turn with me, please, to Philippians.

  10. That's the passage that we're looking at together.

  11. Philippians chapter 2, and reading from verse 12.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  12. Philippians chapter 2, looking at verse 12 through to 18.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  13. So the Apostle writes,

  14. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed,

  15. not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence,

  16. continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  17. For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.

  18. Do everything without complaining or arguing,

  19. so that you may become blameless and pure children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation,

  20. in which you shine like stars in the universe,

  21. as you hold out the word of life,

  22. in order that I may boast on the day of Christ,

  23. that I did not run or labor for nothing.

  24. For even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith,

  25. I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

  26. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

  27. And our prayer is that God will bless to us that portion from His word.

  28. We began our time together this morning by being asked various questions,

  29. and this message begins with a similar kind of question.

  30. What kind of life am I living as a Christian, as a believer?

  31. Do my friends know that I am a Christian?

  32. Do my colleagues at work recognize me as a Christian?

  33. Where am I as far as my Christian experience is concerned?

  34. I know that there is the habit, so they can go up on Facebook, of doing selfies.

  35. Well, sometimes they're just that, selfies, you know.

  36. You're looking in on yourself for all the wrong reasons.

  37. But we want to look upon ourselves this morning for the right reasons.

  38. Am I all that I ought to be in the sight of God's camera, as it were?

  39. Am I growing spiritually speaking?

  40. The Apostle Paul recognized constantly the need to grow spiritually.

  41. In chapter 3 and verse 14, he says,

  42. I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.

  43. So even the Apostle, a great man that he was, with all his experience,

  44. was still pressing on as he reaches the end of his earthly life.

  45. And we remind ourselves this morning that our Christianity must never be a slot in the week.

  46. Christianity is 24-7.

  47. And what the Apostle Paul is encouraging us in, in these verses,

  48. is that we too will endure to the end.

  49. That we won't reach a time when we retire, as it were, as Christians.

  50. That we will sit back.

  51. That we will continue to live to the glory of God.

  52. Now you'll notice that the reading that we had this morning begins with a therefore.

  53. Well, as somebody has said, a therefore always has a wherefore.

  54. So he's saying, in the light of what I have been saying.

  55. Well, what has he been saying?

  56. Well, way back in chapter 1 and verse 27, he says,

  57. conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.

  58. And then he goes on to explain how we can live our lives to the glory of God,

  59. as we conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.

  60. To be different, to be united, to contend as one man.

  61. To live, verse 29, in the light of what has been granted to us.

  62. Namely, that we should believe,

  63. but also to suffer for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  64. To live selfless lives.

  65. To live with the mind of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  66. That's what he has been saying.

  67. And he goes on to say more.

  68. Therefore, my dear friends,

  69. as you have always obeyed,

  70. not only in my presence,

  71. but now much more in my absence,

  72. continue to work out your salvation

  73. with fear and with trembling.

  74. And to live like that

  75. is to live to the glory of God.

  76. So how can I live to the glory of God

  77. by continuing to work out my salvation?

  78. And I want us to concentrate on that phrase

  79. and see how it is expounded by the apostle in these verses.

  80. Let's first of all notice Paul's exhortation here,

  81. that it is an exhortation to Christians.

  82. It's not an exhortation to the unbeliever.

  83. He says, continue to work out your salvation.

  84. He's not speaking about a salvation of works.

  85. They are saved,

  86. but they must go on to live for the Lord.

  87. Their salvation.

  88. To use the analogy again of a camera,

  89. it's a wide angled lens

  90. looking upon the church at Philippi.

  91. They've already been identified,

  92. chapter 1 and verse 1,

  93. as servants of Jesus Christ,

  94. of saints, holy ones,

  95. those who have been separated unto God.

  96. He has spoken in chapter 1 and verse 6

  97. of the one who had begun a good work in them,

  98. that he will continue to carry it on to completion

  99. until the day of Jesus Christ.

  100. He has spoken in chapter 2 and verse 1

  101. of what it means to be united with Christ,

  102. to be comforted by his love,

  103. to enjoy the fellowship of the Spirit.

  104. Now you Philippians,

  105. work out your salvation.

  106. You have that salvation.

  107. Work it out.

  108. I wonder how people would have received this letter.

  109. In Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  110. we have the foundation of the church at Philippi.

  111. And we're introduced there

  112. to three of the members of that early church.

  113. And how they individually would have received this letter,

  114. work out your salvation.

  115. I think of Lydia.

  116. We read about her.

  117. She was a member of the church there.

  118. And we read about her in Acts 16 and verses 13 to 15.

  119. Remember, she was one of the women

  120. who was praying on the riverbank.

  121. She was a religious person.

  122. She desired to serve the one and only true God.

  123. But she needed spiritual eyes being opened.

  124. And we know that there on the riverbank,

  125. as the Apostle Paul and others

  126. brought to them the gospel

  127. concerning the Lord Jesus Christ,

  128. that the Lord opened her heart.

  129. And she invited Paul and his companions

  130. into her home.

  131. And there she gave them hospitality.

  132. Lydia, work out your salvation.

  133. She prayed then.

  134. She worshipped the one true God.

  135. She had an understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  136. Her heart was open to the truth.

  137. Lydia, work out your salvation.

  138. You prayed then.

  139. Continue to pray.

  140. You practice hospitality then.

  141. Continue to practice hospitality.

  142. Don't stop.

  143. An exhortation to Lydia, the Christian.

  144. And then we go on to read in Acts 16

  145. of the slave girl.

  146. Remember, she was possessed of an evil spirit.

  147. A pythoness.

  148. Worshipping a demon.

  149. Making manic utterances.

  150. And that comes across in the original languages.

  151. She was not a pleasant person,

  152. but she was held captive to Satan.

  153. And you remember how she was delivered

  154. from that evil spirit.

  155. Now I would agree with you

  156. that nothing is said about her

  157. becoming a believer.

  158. But if you look at Acts 16 and verse 19,

  159. you discover that when the owners

  160. of the slave girl

  161. realized that their hope of making money

  162. was gone,

  163. they attacked Paul and his companions.

  164. You see, something had happened to this girl.

  165. She had been delivered.

  166. She was a different girl.

  167. No longer making those manic utterances.

  168. No longer involved with the worship

  169. of the python spirit.

  170. A different girl,

  171. freed from the power of Satan.

  172. A new creation delivered by the Lord.

  173. And can you imagine

  174. Paul's exhortation coming to her?

  175. She would remember her past life.

  176. She would remember her wonderful deliverance.

  177. Step out and continue to walk on.

  178. You're no longer under the dominion of Satan.

  179. Continue to walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  180. Work out your salvation as a Christian.

  181. Or think of the jailer.

  182. We know his story.

  183. Remember how he receives

  184. Paul and Silas?

  185. He puts them into the prison.

  186. He puts their feet in stocks.

  187. He doesn't treat them gently.

  188. And there are Paul and Silas

  189. in the prison

  190. singing praises to God.

  191. And the prisoners are listening.

  192. And suddenly, this earthquake.

  193. The jailer wakes up.

  194. He's suicidal.

  195. Sirs, he says,

  196. what must I do to be saved?

  197. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ

  198. and you will be saved

  199. and your household.

  200. And there that jailer

  201. in that prison

  202. after the earthquake

  203. sits before Paul

  204. and hears more.

  205. Tenderly now,

  206. he washes their wounds.

  207. And he is baptized.

  208. And then later,

  209. this letter comes from Paul

  210. and he remembers that night.

  211. Jailer,

  212. work out your salvation.

  213. Continue on

  214. in your Christian walk.

  215. work.

  216. My friends,

  217. if you're a Christian

  218. here this morning,

  219. you have a testimony.

  220. You can look back

  221. to a day

  222. or perhaps

  223. over a period

  224. of time.

  225. And the Lord

  226. entered into your life.

  227. He changed your life.

  228. He began

  229. a work

  230. in your life.

  231. Are you,

  232. as a Christian,

  233. working out

  234. your salvation?

  235. Maybe you were saved

  236. from a religious background

  237. like Lydia.

  238. And maybe you were saved

  239. from an addictive background.

  240. Maybe you were saved

  241. as somebody

  242. who was just going about

  243. their work

  244. like the jailer

  245. doing your job,

  246. being responsible

  247. with little thought

  248. of God.

  249. And then an earthquake

  250. interrupted your life.

  251. And you cried out,

  252. Save me, Lord.

  253. Whatever your testimony

  254. is this morning,

  255. the exhortation

  256. is to you.

  257. Work out

  258. your salvation.

  259. Don't stop.

  260. Don't think

  261. you've arrived.

  262. Continue.

  263. Grow in grace

  264. and in the knowledge

  265. of the Lord

  266. Jesus Christ.

  267. So the exhortation

  268. is to you

  269. this morning

  270. as a Christian.

  271. The second thing

  272. we notice

  273. is that it was

  274. an exhortation

  275. that was

  276. very serious.

  277. They were to

  278. work out

  279. their salvation

  280. with fear

  281. and with trembling.

  282. They're solemn

  283. words, aren't they?

  284. And we can easily

  285. pass them by.

  286. Christianity

  287. is serious.

  288. Not serious

  289. in the sense

  290. that we can't

  291. be happy

  292. and joyful.

  293. Yes, we can be

  294. all of those things.

  295. But there is

  296. a seriousness

  297. about it.

  298. Work out

  299. your salvation

  300. with fear

  301. and with trembling.

  302. The Apostle Paul

  303. is very aware

  304. that every Christian

  305. lives his life

  306. in the sight

  307. of God.

  308. And he lived his life

  309. with this sense

  310. of awe.

  311. The Apostle

  312. would have known

  313. the Psalm.

  314. The Psalm is saying

  315. the fear

  316. of the Lord

  317. is the beginning

  318. of wisdom.

  319. That fear

  320. has a sense

  321. of awe.

  322. Living

  323. in the sight

  324. of God.

  325. And the Apostle

  326. Paul wants

  327. the believers

  328. in Philippi

  329. to recognize

  330. the seriousness

  331. of his exhortation.

  332. And he wants us

  333. to realize

  334. the seriousness

  335. of the exhortation.

  336. Psalm 139

  337. is a psalm

  338. that reminds us

  339. that our God

  340. sees all

  341. and our God

  342. knows all.

  343. That our God

  344. knows us

  345. intimately.

  346. He knows

  347. all that we

  348. think.

  349. The psalmist

  350. says,

  351. you perceive

  352. my thoughts

  353. afar off.

  354. Before a word

  355. is on my tongue

  356. you know it

  357. completely,

  358. O Lord.

  359. Our God

  360. is an everywhere

  361. present God.

  362. Where can I go

  363. from your spirit?

  364. As the psalmist.

  365. Where can I flee?

  366. From your presence.

  367. Work out

  368. your salvation.

  369. Live

  370. to God's

  371. glory.

  372. Remembering

  373. that you do it

  374. in the

  375. sight

  376. of God.

  377. And the way

  378. that we behave

  379. is always

  380. in the sight

  381. of God.

  382. And the only

  383. way that you

  384. and I can

  385. live to the

  386. glory of God

  387. is by being

  388. holy,

  389. being sanctified,

  390. being set

  391. apart,

  392. being holy

  393. as our God

  394. is holy.

  395. It's a big

  396. demand.

  397. That's how

  398. serious it

  399. is.

  400. It is to

  401. have,

  402. as the

  403. apostle Paul

  404. puts it

  405. in chapter 2

  406. and verse 5,

  407. to have

  408. the

  409. mind,

  410. to have

  411. the

  412. attitude

  413. of the

  414. Lord

  415. Jesus

  416. Christ.

  417. To walk

  418. before our

  419. God

  420. with

  421. humility.

  422. To walk

  423. before him

  424. and to

  425. recognize

  426. we walk

  427. before him.

  428. So when we get up

  429. tomorrow morning,

  430. we're living

  431. in the presence

  432. of God.

  433. when we go

  434. to our

  435. places of

  436. work,

  437. it is in

  438. the sight

  439. of God.

  440. When we go

  441. on a holiday,

  442. we don't go

  443. without the

  444. Lord.

  445. We live

  446. our lives

  447. and we seek

  448. to work out

  449. our salvation

  450. with fear

  451. and with

  452. trembling.

  453. The third

  454. exhortation,

  455. idea of this

  456. exhortation,

  457. is an

  458. exhortation

  459. that demanded

  460. commitment.

  461. It has

  462. here that

  463. we are to

  464. continue to

  465. work out

  466. our salvation

  467. with fear

  468. and trembling.

  469. He's

  470. talking about

  471. a process

  472. which takes

  473. a lifetime.

  474. Now when we

  475. believed,

  476. when we

  477. trusted in

  478. the Lord

  479. Jesus Christ,

  480. at that

  481. moment,

  482. we were

  483. justified.

  484. We were

  485. declared not

  486. guilty.

  487. The perfect

  488. righteousness of

  489. the Lord

  490. Jesus Christ

  491. was put to

  492. our account.

  493. So we are

  494. justified.

  495. We're right in

  496. the sight of

  497. God.

  498. That's

  499. immediate.

  500. And that's

  501. true of

  502. every Christian.

  503. sanctification.

  504. But then

  505. sanctification is

  506. a process.

  507. It's a

  508. lifetime

  509. commitment.

  510. We're not

  511. what we once

  512. were, but we're

  513. not what we

  514. should be.

  515. So work out

  516. your salvation

  517. with fear

  518. and trembling.

  519. We're coming up

  520. to the

  521. Olympic Games

  522. and no doubt

  523. we'll be

  524. watching the

  525. races and

  526. some of the

  527. things that

  528. will be going

  529. on there.

  530. We will see

  531. the sprint

  532. which will be

  533. over in less

  534. than ten

  535. seconds.

  536. It's over,

  537. it's quick,

  538. and we would

  539. at times wish

  540. that life were

  541. like that,

  542. that it was a

  543. quick sprint

  544. and all the

  545. glory that goes

  546. with those

  547. hundred meters

  548. runners.

  549. But no,

  550. the Christian

  551. life is not

  552. like that.

  553. It's a

  554. marathon.

  555. It's a

  556. slog.

  557. It's sometimes

  558. going through

  559. the pain

  560. barrier.

  561. It's a

  562. commitment

  563. moment by

  564. moment.

  565. And notice

  566. how Paul

  567. acknowledges

  568. the commitment

  569. that was

  570. already in

  571. the Philippians.

  572. He prays

  573. for them,

  574. chapter 1

  575. and verse 4.

  576. And he

  577. prays for

  578. them with

  579. joy.

  580. Why?

  581. Because of

  582. your partnership

  583. in the gospel

  584. from the first

  585. day until

  586. now.

  587. In other

  588. words,

  589. there had

  590. been a

  591. degree of

  592. commitment.

  593. In chapter

  594. 4 and

  595. verses 14

  596. to 16,

  597. again he's

  598. speaking about

  599. commitment.

  600. Yet it was

  601. good for you,

  602. he says,

  603. to share in

  604. my troubles.

  605. moreover,

  606. as you

  607. Philippians

  608. know,

  609. in the

  610. early days

  611. of your

  612. acquaintance

  613. with the

  614. gospel,

  615. when I

  616. set out

  617. from

  618. Macedonia,

  619. not one

  620. church

  621. shared with

  622. me in

  623. the matter

  624. of giving

  625. and receiving

  626. except for

  627. you only.

  628. Yes,

  629. they were

  630. committed,

  631. they were

  632. laboring for

  633. the Lord.

  634. There was

  635. partnership

  636. in the

  637. gospel.

  638. You have

  639. always

  640. obeyed,

  641. he says,

  642. in the

  643. verses that

  644. we're

  645. looking at

  646. this morning.

  647. Not only

  648. in my

  649. presence,

  650. but now

  651. much more

  652. in my

  653. absence.

  654. All right,

  655. continue then

  656. to work out

  657. your salvation

  658. with fear

  659. and trembling.

  660. Keep going,

  661. keep forward,

  662. don't stop

  663. living to

  664. the glory

  665. of God.

  666. There's

  667. always room

  668. for

  669. improvement.

  670. improvement.

  671. Remember

  672. that Paul

  673. is not

  674. sitting in

  675. an office.

  676. He's a

  677. prisoner.

  678. And he's

  679. asking the

  680. Christians in

  681. Philippi to

  682. be like

  683. him,

  684. to keep

  685. going on,

  686. even when

  687. the going

  688. is tough.

  689. In verse

  690. 17 he

  691. speaks about

  692. being poured

  693. out like

  694. a drink

  695. offering.

  696. Later,

  697. he would

  698. write to

  699. Timothy

  700. and he

  701. would say

  702. as his

  703. execution

  704. approached,

  705. I have

  706. fought the

  707. good fight.

  708. I have

  709. finished the

  710. race.

  711. I have

  712. kept the

  713. faith.

  714. I remember

  715. hearing of a

  716. man who was

  717. a very

  718. faithful

  719. evangelist

  720. and he'd

  721. heard the

  722. message that

  723. he had

  724. terminal

  725. cancer.

  726. and people

  727. were saying

  728. to him,

  729. stop,

  730. take a

  731. rest now.

  732. He said,

  733. no,

  734. I'm coming

  735. to the

  736. finishing

  737. line.

  738. I'm on

  739. the sprint

  740. now to

  741. get home.

  742. Continue

  743. on.

  744. Don't

  745. give up.

  746. Be like

  747. the apostle

  748. and be

  749. able to

  750. say as

  751. you

  752. approach

  753. God,

  754. and none

  755. of us

  756. know when

  757. that day

  758. will be

  759. when we

  760. stand in

  761. his presence.

  762. But may

  763. we all be

  764. able to

  765. say,

  766. I was

  767. committed

  768. right to

  769. the end.

  770. I fought

  771. the good

  772. fight.

  773. I finished

  774. the race.

  775. I have

  776. kept

  777. the faith.

  778. I have

  779. been

  780. obedient

  781. even

  782. to

  783. death.

  784. So this

  785. exhortation

  786. of the

  787. apostle is

  788. to you

  789. as

  790. Christians.

  791. It's

  792. for you

  793. to be

  794. committed.

  795. Live

  796. to the

  797. glory

  798. of God

  799. that you

  800. might be

  801. as you're

  802. reminded in

  803. chapter 1

  804. and verse

  805. 10,

  806. pure and

  807. blameless

  808. until the

  809. day of

  810. Christ.

  811. Fourthly,

  812. it's an

  813. exhortation

  814. that deals

  815. with real

  816. issues.

  817. Look at

  818. verse 14.

  819. Do

  820. everything

  821. without

  822. complaining

  823. or arguing

  824. so that

  825. you may

  826. become

  827. blameless

  828. and pure

  829. children

  830. of God.

  831. Now this

  832. verse deals

  833. with the

  834. whole idea

  835. of being

  836. obedient.

  837. Not

  838. arguing

  839. or

  840. complaining

  841. about

  842. what God

  843. teaches

  844. you

  845. through

  846. his

  847. word.

  848. Yes,

  849. I know

  850. it says

  851. that,

  852. but,

  853. and we

  854. argue

  855. with

  856. God's

  857. word.

  858. Yes,

  859. I know

  860. it says

  861. that,

  862. but you

  863. don't

  864. know my

  865. circumstances,

  866. and we

  867. argue,

  868. or it's

  869. hard,

  870. Lord,

  871. because of

  872. the situation

  873. in which

  874. I find

  875. myself.

  876. Do

  877. everything.

  878. Be

  879. obedient.

  880. That's what

  881. he's saying

  882. here.

  883. It's

  884. dealing with

  885. real

  886. issues,

  887. issues in

  888. your life,

  889. and in

  890. my life,

  891. and in

  892. the

  893. Philippians

  894. life.

  895. It deals,

  896. if you like,

  897. with the

  898. nitty-gritty

  899. of life.

  900. Let's

  901. remember that

  902. the apostle

  903. is writing

  904. under the

  905. inspiration

  906. of the

  907. Spirit of

  908. God.

  909. He's

  910. the apostle

  911. who's

  912. speaking

  913. with

  914. authority.

  915. And let's

  916. remember,

  917. he's not

  918. using words

  919. for the

  920. sake of

  921. using

  922. them.

  923. He's

  924. not only

  925. calling for

  926. obedience,

  927. he's

  928. speaking to

  929. specific

  930. situations

  931. that applied

  932. to the

  933. church

  934. at

  935. Philippi.

  936. You see,

  937. there were

  938. people there

  939. in the

  940. church,

  941. and they

  942. were made

  943. up of

  944. different

  945. people.

  946. from

  947. different

  948. backgrounds.

  949. People

  950. from

  951. different

  952. cultures.

  953. People

  954. who were

  955. rich,

  956. or

  957. were born

  958. to a

  959. rich

  960. background.

  961. Some

  962. who had

  963. a slave

  964. background.

  965. Different

  966. personalities.

  967. And they

  968. were all

  969. part of

  970. the church.

  971. Well,

  972. you do

  973. everything,

  974. no matter

  975. what your

  976. background

  977. is,

  978. that you

  979. may be

  980. pure and

  981. blameless

  982. children

  983. of God.

  984. God.

  985. He speaks

  986. to a

  987. specific

  988. issue,

  989. because he

  990. is dealing

  991. with real

  992. issues.

  993. In chapter

  994. four and

  995. verse two,

  996. I plead

  997. with

  998. Euodia,

  999. and I

  1000. plead with

  1001. Syntyche,

  1002. to agree

  1003. with each

  1004. other in

  1005. the Lord.

  1006. One

  1007. commentator

  1008. says about

  1009. their names,

  1010. and he

  1011. said that

  1012. they should

  1013. be altered

  1014. slightly.

  1015. They should

  1016. be odious

  1017. and soon

  1018. touchy.

  1019. And I

  1020. think there's

  1021. a lot to

  1022. be said

  1023. for that.

  1024. But at

  1025. any rate,

  1026. they were

  1027. people who

  1028. were complaining

  1029. or arguing.

  1030. They were

  1031. causing

  1032. problems in

  1033. the church.

  1034. Now,

  1035. you two

  1036. ladies,

  1037. work out

  1038. your salvation

  1039. by agreeing

  1040. with each

  1041. other in

  1042. the Lord.

  1043. Stop

  1044. arguing.

  1045. Stop

  1046. complaining.

  1047. And there

  1048. were others

  1049. in the

  1050. church,

  1051. chapter four

  1052. and verse

  1053. six,

  1054. who were

  1055. anxious and

  1056. worried about

  1057. different things.

  1058. Do not be

  1059. anxious,

  1060. he says in

  1061. chapter four

  1062. and verse six,

  1063. about anything.

  1064. But in

  1065. everything,

  1066. by prayer and

  1067. petition,

  1068. with thanksgiving,

  1069. present your

  1070. requests to

  1071. God,

  1072. and the peace

  1073. of God,

  1074. which transcends

  1075. all understanding,

  1076. will guard your

  1077. hearts and your

  1078. minds in

  1079. Christ Jesus.

  1080. Real issues

  1081. in the

  1082. church.

  1083. Don't fret.

  1084. Don't complain

  1085. about your

  1086. lot in

  1087. life.

  1088. Why?

  1089. Well,

  1090. so that you

  1091. might live to

  1092. the glory of

  1093. God,

  1094. so that you

  1095. might be,

  1096. as he puts

  1097. it here,

  1098. become those

  1099. kind of people

  1100. that are

  1101. blameless

  1102. and pure,

  1103. live as

  1104. children of

  1105. God.

  1106. Notice the

  1107. force of

  1108. Paul's words

  1109. here.

  1110. Live so

  1111. that you're

  1112. recognized by

  1113. the family

  1114. likeness.

  1115. You have a

  1116. heavenly

  1117. father.

  1118. You have

  1119. been bought

  1120. with the

  1121. precious blood

  1122. of the

  1123. Lord Jesus

  1124. Christ.

  1125. The Holy

  1126. Spirit has

  1127. witnessed with

  1128. your spirit

  1129. that you

  1130. are sons

  1131. of God,

  1132. daughters

  1133. of God.

  1134. Take on

  1135. the family

  1136. likeness.

  1137. Are we

  1138. Christ-like?

  1139. Are we

  1140. like our

  1141. elder brother,

  1142. the Lord

  1143. Jesus Christ?

  1144. So the

  1145. force of

  1146. Paul's words

  1147. are there for

  1148. us all to

  1149. see.

  1150. Take on

  1151. the family

  1152. likeness by

  1153. living sanctified

  1154. lives.

  1155. Live to

  1156. the glory

  1157. of God

  1158. day by

  1159. day,

  1160. moment by

  1161. moment.

  1162. Happy in

  1163. doing the

  1164. will of

  1165. God from

  1166. the heart.

  1167. Constantly

  1168. live to

  1169. God's

  1170. glory.

  1171. When our

  1172. children are

  1173. young,

  1174. at least some

  1175. of them,

  1176. we might

  1177. say to

  1178. them,

  1179. would you

  1180. make me a

  1181. cup of

  1182. tea?

  1183. And they

  1184. say,

  1185. oh, do I

  1186. have to?

  1187. Yes, you

  1188. do have to,

  1189. you know,

  1190. make a

  1191. cup of

  1192. tea.

  1193. But then

  1194. the day

  1195. came,

  1196. and they

  1197. said,

  1198. would you

  1199. like a

  1200. cup of

  1201. tea?

  1202. They

  1203. didn't have

  1204. to be

  1205. asked.

  1206. I think

  1207. the barbecue

  1208. is going

  1209. on later

  1210. on today,

  1211. so I hope

  1212. somebody is

  1213. listening.

  1214. But, you

  1215. know, the

  1216. whole thing

  1217. is doing

  1218. all to

  1219. the glory

  1220. of God

  1221. without

  1222. grumbling or

  1223. complaining.

  1224. We're

  1225. before our

  1226. heavenly

  1227. Father,

  1228. to do

  1229. it gladly

  1230. from our

  1231. heart.

  1232. Not because

  1233. we must,

  1234. but because

  1235. we want

  1236. to be

  1237. pleasing

  1238. to the

  1239. Savior.

  1240. Fifthly,

  1241. it was

  1242. an exhortation

  1243. that was

  1244. delivered

  1245. in a

  1246. hostile

  1247. world.

  1248. Work out

  1249. your salvation

  1250. as Christians.

  1251. Be

  1252. committed.

  1253. Be

  1254. committed.

  1255. Deal with

  1256. the practical

  1257. things in

  1258. your life

  1259. that need

  1260. to be

  1261. dealt

  1262. with.

  1263. Work out

  1264. your salvation

  1265. even though

  1266. you're living

  1267. in a

  1268. hostile

  1269. world.

  1270. Look at the

  1271. latter part

  1272. of verse

  1273. 15.

  1274. Without

  1275. fault,

  1276. in a

  1277. crooked

  1278. and depraved

  1279. generation.

  1280. salvation.

  1281. In a

  1282. world,

  1283. verse 17,

  1284. where I am

  1285. being poured

  1286. out like a

  1287. drink offering,

  1288. work out your

  1289. salvation in the

  1290. Roman pagan

  1291. world of the

  1292. day.

  1293. Work out your

  1294. salvation in a

  1295. world that is

  1296. hostile to the

  1297. message of the

  1298. gospel.

  1299. people.

  1300. Work out

  1301. your salvation

  1302. where the

  1303. world is under

  1304. the dominion

  1305. of Satan.

  1306. Work out

  1307. your salvation

  1308. where Christians

  1309. are suffering

  1310. martyrdom and

  1311. imprisonment.

  1312. That's where

  1313. you're to work

  1314. out your

  1315. salvation.

  1316. We're living

  1317. in an

  1318. increasingly

  1319. hostile

  1320. world.

  1321. We see

  1322. that in

  1323. laws that

  1324. are passed.

  1325. We see

  1326. that in

  1327. so many

  1328. different

  1329. ways.

  1330. In the

  1331. secular world

  1332. in which we

  1333. find ourselves.

  1334. Work out

  1335. your salvation

  1336. even though

  1337. everybody is

  1338. against you.

  1339. Was it

  1340. Athanasius,

  1341. an early

  1342. Christian who

  1343. was told,

  1344. the whole

  1345. world is

  1346. against you,

  1347. Athanasius?

  1348. Well, he

  1349. says, if the

  1350. whole world is

  1351. against Athanasius,

  1352. then Athanasius,

  1353. is against

  1354. the whole

  1355. world.

  1356. To stand

  1357. firm

  1358. in a

  1359. hostile

  1360. world.

  1361. Work out

  1362. your salvation

  1363. when people

  1364. are disagreeing

  1365. with you,

  1366. when people

  1367. are making

  1368. their life

  1369. difficult,

  1370. when your

  1371. bosses are

  1372. making life

  1373. difficult,

  1374. when things

  1375. are difficult

  1376. in the home

  1377. situation.

  1378. Work out

  1379. your salvation

  1380. there.

  1381. And as you

  1382. work out

  1383. salvation there,

  1384. you're to

  1385. hold out

  1386. the word

  1387. of life.

  1388. Verse 16.

  1389. In the

  1390. hostile world

  1391. of their

  1392. day,

  1393. they were

  1394. to make

  1395. the Lord

  1396. Jesus

  1397. Christ

  1398. known.

  1399. They were

  1400. to make

  1401. known that

  1402. which was

  1403. of first

  1404. importance,

  1405. that Christ

  1406. died according

  1407. to the

  1408. scriptures,

  1409. that he was

  1410. buried,

  1411. and that he

  1412. rose again

  1413. according to

  1414. the scriptures.

  1415. Live your

  1416. life,

  1417. not only in

  1418. what you

  1419. don't do,

  1420. but what

  1421. you do

  1422. do.

  1423. Let people

  1424. know that

  1425. your parable,

  1426. that you're

  1427. seeking to

  1428. live before

  1429. men,

  1430. let them

  1431. know the

  1432. meaning of

  1433. it.

  1434. Why I am

  1435. living like

  1436. this is

  1437. because I

  1438. belong to

  1439. the Lord

  1440. Jesus Christ.

  1441. I'm living

  1442. this way

  1443. because of

  1444. what Jesus

  1445. Christ did

  1446. for me upon

  1447. the cross

  1448. of Calvary.

  1449. I'm living

  1450. this life

  1451. because he

  1452. rose again

  1453. that I might

  1454. be justified.

  1455. I'm living

  1456. my life

  1457. to the

  1458. glory of

  1459. God

  1460. in a

  1461. hostile

  1462. world.

  1463. And in

  1464. this hostile

  1465. world,

  1466. I shine

  1467. as stars

  1468. in the

  1469. heavens.

  1470. I'm a

  1471. luminary

  1472. in a

  1473. dark

  1474. world.

  1475. In

  1476. Daniel

    Daniel 12 chapter mention

  1477. chapter 12

  1478. and verse

  1479. 3,

  1480. we have

  1481. these words,

  1482. those who

  1483. are wise

  1484. will shine

  1485. like the

  1486. brightness

  1487. of the

  1488. heavens

  1489. and those

  1490. who lead

  1491. many to

  1492. righteousness

  1493. like the

  1494. stars

  1495. forever

  1496. and ever.

  1497. Oh,

  1498. that that

  1499. would be

  1500. our

  1501. testimony

  1502. in the

  1503. world in

  1504. which we

  1505. live in

  1506. Carragiline,

  1507. an exhortation

  1508. that was

  1509. delivered

  1510. in a

  1511. hostile

  1512. world.

  1513. The last

  1514. point,

  1515. it's an

  1516. exhortation

  1517. that can

  1518. be

  1519. worked

  1520. out.

  1521. I don't

  1522. know

  1523. if you

  1524. felt like me

  1525. as when I

  1526. was preparing

  1527. this message.

  1528. How can I

  1529. do it?

  1530. I might as

  1531. well give

  1532. up now.

  1533. it's

  1534. impossible

  1535. to live

  1536. like that.

  1537. I might

  1538. as well

  1539. give up.

  1540. I'll never

  1541. make it.

  1542. And I

  1543. would agree

  1544. with you

  1545. if it

  1546. wasn't

  1547. for

  1548. verse

  1549. 13.

  1550. Work

  1551. out

  1552. your

  1553. salvation

  1554. with

  1555. fear

  1556. and

  1557. trembling

  1558. for it

  1559. is God

  1560. who works

  1561. in you

  1562. to will

  1563. and to

  1564. act

  1565. according

  1566. to his

  1567. good

  1568. purpose.

  1569. God

  1570. in his

  1571. grace

  1572. in his

  1573. mercy

  1574. in his

  1575. love

  1576. has revealed

  1577. his son

  1578. to you.

  1579. He's put

  1580. his Holy

  1581. Spirit

  1582. into your

  1583. life

  1584. through the

  1585. miracle

  1586. of the

  1587. new

  1588. birth.

  1589. Your

  1590. very body

  1591. as a

  1592. Christian

  1593. has become

  1594. the temple

  1595. of God's

  1596. Holy

  1597. Spirit.

  1598. We are

  1599. indwelled

  1600. by the

  1601. Spirit

  1602. of the

  1603. living

  1604. God.

  1605. And because

  1606. of this

  1607. power

  1608. that is

  1609. at work

  1610. within us

  1611. we are

  1612. enabled

  1613. to work

  1614. out

  1615. our

  1616. salvation

  1617. with

  1618. fear

  1619. and

  1620. trembling.

  1621. There's

  1622. an old

  1623. hymn

  1624. that says

  1625. this

  1626. every

  1627. virtue

  1628. we

  1629. possess

  1630. and

  1631. every

  1632. conquest

  1633. won

  1634. and

  1635. every

  1636. thought

  1637. of

  1638. holiness

  1639. is

  1640. our

  1641. his

  1642. alone.

  1643. He

  1644. has

  1645. worked

  1646. therefore

  1647. the

  1648. virtues

  1649. that I

  1650. have

  1651. in this

  1652. evil

  1653. world

  1654. is

  1655. because

  1656. of

  1657. him

  1658. and

  1659. every

  1660. victory

  1661. I'm

  1662. able

  1663. to

  1664. accomplish

  1665. is

  1666. because

  1667. of

  1668. his

  1669. work

  1670. in

  1671. me

  1672. and

  1673. every

  1674. thought

  1675. that I

  1676. have

  1677. the

  1678. desire

  1679. after

  1680. him

  1681. is

  1682. because

  1683. he

  1684. is

  1685. at

  1686. work

  1687. with

  1688. me

  1689. in

  1690. me.

  1691. I

  1692. can

  1693. continue

  1694. to

  1695. work

  1696. out

  1697. my

  1698. salvation

  1699. because

  1700. he

  1701. is

  1702. at

  1703. work

  1704. and

  1705. he

  1706. will

  1707. bring

  1708. that

  1709. work

  1710. to

  1711. completion.

  1712. I

  1713. can

  1714. live

  1715. to

  1716. the

  1717. glory

  1718. of

  1719. God.

  1720. I

  1721. can

  1722. be

  1723. committed

  1724. to

  1725. him

  1726. who

  1727. loved

  1728. me.

  1729. I

  1730. can

  1731. deal

  1732. with

  1733. the

  1734. real

  1735. issues

  1736. that

  1737. are

  1738. bothering

  1739. me

  1740. in

  1741. my

  1742. life.

  1743. They

  1744. can

  1745. be

  1746. dealt

  1747. with.

  1748. I

  1749. can

  1750. live

  1751. in

  1752. a

  1753. hostile

  1754. world

  1755. to

  1756. the

  1757. glory

  1758. of

  1759. God.

  1760. I

  1761. can

  1762. do

  1763. it

  1764. because

  1765. of

  1766. his

  1767. work

  1768. in

  1769. me.

  1770. It

  1771. wouldn't

  1772. be

  1773. possible

  1774. would

  1775. it

  1776. apart

  1777. from

  1778. that

  1779. work

  1780. in

  1781. me.

  1782. So

  1783. are

  1784. we

  1785. going

  1786. to

  1787. live

  1788. for

  1789. the

  1790. glory

  1791. of

  1792. God?

  1793. Will

  1794. we

  1795. be

  1796. a

  1797. rejoicing

  1798. church

  1799. because

  1800. I

  1801. believe

  1802. that's

  1803. how

  1804. the

  1805. apostle

  1806. Paul

  1807. brings

  1808. his

  1809. section

  1810. to

  1811. an

  1812. end.

  1813. He

  1814. says

  1815. even

  1816. if

  1817. I

  1818. am

  1819. being

  1820. poured

  1821. out

  1822. like

  1823. a

  1824. drink

  1825. offering

  1826. on

  1827. the

  1828. sacrifice

  1829. and

  1830. service

  1831. coming

  1832. from

  1833. your

  1834. faith

  1835. I

  1836. am

  1837. glad

  1838. and

  1839. rejoice

  1840. with

  1841. all

  1842. of

  1843. you

  1844. so

  1845. you

  1846. too

  1847. should

  1848. be

  1849. glad

  1850. and

  1851. rejoice

  1852. with

  1853. me.

  1854. The

  1855. apostle

  1856. as

  1857. he

  1858. sees

  1859. the

  1860. Philippians

  1861. living

  1862. to

  1863. the

  1864. glory

  1865. of

  1866. God

  1867. working

  1868. out

  1869. their

  1870. salvation

  1871. he

  1872. rejoices

  1873. he

  1874. hasn't

  1875. run

  1876. in

  1877. vain

  1878. the

  1879. Lord

  1880. has

  1881. blessed

  1882. his

  1883. ministry

  1884. and

  1885. he

  1886. sees

  1887. the

  1888. church

  1889. growing

  1890. and

  1891. becoming

  1892. stronger

  1893. and

  1894. living

  1895. to

  1896. the

  1897. glory

  1898. of

  1899. God

  1900. God

  1901. and

  1902. he

  1903. rejoices

  1904. and

  1905. the

  1906. church

  1907. rejoices

  1908. there's

  1909. nothing

  1910. sad

  1911. about

  1912. living

  1913. to

  1914. the

  1915. glory

  1916. of

  1917. God

  1918. may

  1919. the

  1920. Lord

  1921. enable

  1922. us

  1923. over

  1924. the

  1925. days

  1926. that

  1927. follow

  1928. and

  1929. the

  1930. years

  1931. however

  1932. many

  1933. they

  1934. may

  1935. be

  1936. if

  1937. life

  1938. be

  1939. short

  1940. or

  1941. if

  1942. life

  1943. be

  1944. long

  1945. may

  1946. I

  1947. be

  1948. glad

  1949. to

  1950. glorify

  1951. my

  1952. God

  1953. let's

  1954. pray

  1955. together

  1956. father

  1957. we

  1958. do

  1959. thank

  1960. you

  1961. that

  1962. you've

  1963. given

  1964. us

  1965. your

  1966. word

  1967. and

  1968. we

  1969. thank

  1970. you

  1971. father

  1972. that

  1973. by

  1974. your

  1975. enabling

  1976. we

  1977. are

  1978. enabled

  1979. to

  1980. live

  1981. our

  1982. lives

  1983. to

  1984. the

  1985. glory

  1986. of

  1987. your

  1988. name

  1989. help

  1990. us

  1991. for

  1992. the

  1993. rest

  1994. of

  1995. this

  1996. day

  1997. and

  1998. for

  1999. all

  2000. the

  2001. days

  2002. that

  2003. are

  2004. given

  2005. to

  2006. us

  2007. that

  2008. lie

  2009. ahead

  2010. whether

  2011. they

  2012. be

  2013. long

  2014. or

  2015. whether

  2016. they

  2017. be

  2018. short

  2019. may

  2020. we

  2021. lift

  2022. your

  2023. glory

  2024. by

  2025. the

  2026. power

  2027. of

  2028. your

  2029. spirit

  2030. in

  2031. Jesus

  2032. name

  2033. Amen
