  1. for verses 2 to 9, I think.

  2. Yeah, so that's on page 1180 of the Red Bible.

  3. So, I plead with you, Odea, and I plead with Sintica

  4. to agree with each other in the Lord.

  5. Yes, and I asked you, loyal Yoke Fellow,

  6. help these women who have contended at my side

  7. in the cause of the gospel,

  8. along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers,

  9. whose names are in the Book of Life.

  10. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  11. I will say it again, rejoice.

  12. Let your gentleness be evident to all.

  13. The Lord is near.

  14. Do not be anxious about anything,

  15. but in everything, by prayer and petition,

  16. with thanksgiving, present your request to God.

  17. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding

  18. will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

  19. Finally, brothers, whatever is true,

  20. whatever is noble, whatever is right,

  21. whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

  22. whatever is admirable,

  23. if anything is excellent or praiseworthy,

  24. think about such things.

  25. Whatever you have learned or received

  26. or heard from me or seen in me,

  27. put it into practice,

  28. and the God of peace will be with you.

  29. Thanks, Kate.

  30. If you'd like to just keep your Bibles open,

  31. we're going to be referring back and forth

  32. within the Book of Philippians for the next while.

  33. So, yeah, just before I start,

  34. I'd just like to thank you for your prayers during the week.

  35. Yeah, they do mean a lot,

  36. and they have helped me.

  37. I've, as always, when I'm preparing,

  38. I do enjoy the preparation.

  39. Christine might in degree

  40. with all the stress that's in the house,

  41. but I do enjoy the time that I get to spend

  42. really delving into God's Word

  43. and thinking through it

  44. and thinking how to apply it into my own life.

  45. But as we start,

  46. just to refer back to last week with Ralph,

  47. we left it with Ralph encouraging us

  48. to stand firm in the Lord,

  49. and that's where today's passage starts from.

  50. A quick glance back to chapter 1.

  51. Verse 1 will remind us

  52. who Paul is writing to.

  53. So let's pop back there for a second

  54. and have a look at that.

  55. And it starts by saying,

  56. to all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi,

  57. together with the overseers,

  58. or elders,

  59. and deacons.

  60. So, this is a letter to Christians,

  61. followers of Jesus,

  62. who are committed to the local church

  63. and to the spread of the Gospel.

  64. They are partners with Paul in the Gospel.

  65. Verse 1,

  66. or verse 5,

  67. because of your partnership in the Gospel

  68. from the first day until now.

  69. So they're partners with Paul,

  70. and he loves them in verse 7 and 8.

  71. This love is also expressed in the deepest sense

  72. in the beginning of this chapter,

  73. chapter 4,

  74. that we're going to spend today looking at.

  75. Therefore,

  76. my dear brothers and sisters,

  77. you whom I love

  78. and long for,

  79. my joy

  80. and my crown.

  81. So it's important to keep all of that

  82. in the back of our minds

  83. as we look at the next few verses.

  84. Because if we don't understand

  85. the context or the background

  86. of this chapter,

  87. and the relationship with Paul,

  88. we could easily think that Paul is

  89. on their back,

  90. and that he's nitpicking.

  91. Because there's some hard things

  92. that he has to say to them this morning.

  93. So preparing this talk this morning,

  94. I considered entitling it

  95. Three Easy Steps to Be a Miserable Christian.

  96. Those three easy steps are

  97. keep bickering,

  98. dwell on everything bad in your life,

  99. worry about it,

  100. and be anxious all the time.

  101. Three,

  102. think and ponder

  103. on everything that pops into your mind,

  104. especially the really bad stuff.

  105. And don't try and be like Paul,

  106. because he was an apostle,

  107. and I'm only weak little me.

  108. Now I know that's four,

  109. and I said that there would only be three,

  110. but sure,

  111. if we're going to be miserable Christians,

  112. we may as well have four things

  113. to grumble about instead of three.

  114. But Paul is actually building on

  115. from what we looked at last week.

  116. He explains to us

  117. how to stand firm.

  118. And not only that,

  119. but how to enjoy the power of God

  120. at work in us.

  121. He gives us some very useful advice

  122. as to how we can guard our hearts and minds

  123. in Christ Jesus from verse 7,

  124. and how to enjoy the peace of God.

  125. Basically the opposites of the list I just mentioned.

  126. So as a brief outline,

  127. so we know where we're going this morning,

  128. and when I'm finally going to sit down again,

  129. I've divided the passage into six sections.

  130. Unity in the church family,

  131. peace in our relationships,

  132. peace in our circumstances,

  133. peace in our thoughts,

  134. peace in our behavior,

  135. and finally the blessings of peace.

  136. So firstly, unity.

  137. Unity in the church family.

  138. You can't stand together if you're divided.

  139. Paul loves them dearly.

  140. That isn't just a feeling for Paul.

  141. It's also a model for us

  142. to have towards each other.

  143. If Paul's love for the church in Philippi

  144. is a model for how we should love each other,

  145. then any division among us is scandalous.

  146. We can't be at odds with each other

  147. and be in God's family.

  148. When I was in school,

  149. there was twin boys in my class.

  150. They seemed to absolutely hate each other.

  151. They must have come out of the womb with bruises

  152. because they were always fighting.

  153. When we went to rugby training,

  154. they had to be separated more than once

  155. per training session.

  156. They tore lumps out of each other each week.

  157. The awkward thing about that was

  158. that they played scrum half and out half.

  159. If you don't understand rugby,

  160. well then,

  161. it's enough to say that these two positions

  162. are probably the two key positions on the field.

  163. The relationship between these two positions

  164. is vital to gelling the team together.

  165. It was important that they got on well on the pitch.

  166. These two guys were brilliant rugby players.

  167. I think one of them went on to play for Munster B.

  168. Really good rugby players.

  169. But if you put them together on a pitch,

  170. together with the ball in their hand,

  171. the school jersey,

  172. and the crest on their chest,

  173. they would boss the game.

  174. Their telepathy or their understanding of each other

  175. was amazing.

  176. They both knew where the other one was all the time.

  177. You see,

  178. when they had to come together

  179. and unite around the common goal of winning the match,

  180. they put whatever differences they had aside

  181. and use their understanding of each other

  182. to do great things

  183. on the rugby pitch for the team.

  184. Now please don't misunderstand me

  185. or mishear me

  186. because that is just a funny story

  187. which happens to be true,

  188. but I don't think it's okay

  189. to fall out with each other

  190. and box the head off each other

  191. from Monday to Saturday

  192. as long as we can unite once a week

  193. for our weekly gathering

  194. or distribute calendars together at Christmas time.

  195. If there is disunity in the church,

  196. how can we stand together

  197. against the enemy outside?

  198. Paul addresses two women here specifically,

  199. Euodia and Syntyche,

  200. who seem to have fallen out over something.

  201. Verse 2,

  202. I plead with Euodia

  203. and I plead with Syntyche

  204. to be of the same mind in the Lord.

  205. Yes, and I ask you,

  206. my true companion,

  207. to help these women

  208. since they have contended at my side

  209. in the cause of the gospel,

  210. along with Clement

  211. and the rest of my co-workers

  212. whose names are in the Book of Life.

  213. These women weren't the quiet ones

  214. who came to church regularly

  215. and didn't do much out of the way.

  216. These women were active members of the church.

  217. They were regular at meetings.

  218. They were on the set-up rota.

  219. They helped at creche.

  220. They visited the sick.

  221. They delivered magazines and calendars.

  222. They welcomed people at the door.

  223. They were intentional

  224. in their day-to-day relationships

  225. to talk to people about Jesus.

  226. They were contenders with Paul

  227. in the cause of the gospel.

  228. The very fact that Paul mentions them

  229. suggests that he had heard of their bickering

  230. through the grapevine.

  231. Now, he doesn't mention the issue that's between them

  232. or does he take it aside

  233. to say who he thinks is at fault?

  234. He pleads equally.

  235. Look where it says it there.

  236. He pleads equally with Euodia

  237. and he pleads with Syntyche

  238. to be of the same mind.

  239. Alec Mottier,

  240. who incidentally went home to heaven

  241. just this past Friday,

  242. he wrote a commentary on Philippians.

  243. And it says,

  244. To agree on the gospel

  245. is the most fundamental form of unity.

  246. It involves a unity of mind and heart

  247. as to the doctrine

  248. and personal experience of salvation.

  249. To agree on what the gospel demands

  250. in its proclamation to the world

  251. is to cement unity by common action.

  252. The singleness of the task

  253. ought to be reflected

  254. in the singleness of the workers.

  255. The singleness of the task

  256. ought to be reflected

  257. in the singleness of the workers.

  258. So it's important that we get along.

  259. In fact, it's important too

  260. that we help each other get along.

  261. Look again at what Paul says.

  262. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion,

  263. to help these women.

  264. He doesn't say to wait

  265. until they sort it out themselves.

  266. He encourages his companion

  267. to help them.

  268. Now this true companion

  269. is referred to differently

  270. in different translations.

  271. Some translations call him

  272. Synzegos.

  273. You can understand why that didn't make it

  274. into most named books.

  275. Synzegos.

  276. But he's also referred to here

  277. more helpfully as Yokefellow.

  278. It's a far more helpful title

  279. as it describes a person

  280. who pulls well

  281. in a harness made for two.

  282. A Yokefellow.

  283. He is motivated

  284. by the gospel like Paul is.

  285. They both share the desire

  286. to have Christ proclaimed

  287. by word and action

  288. and will kick against anything

  289. that hampers that work.

  290. So this companion

  291. is charged with helping

  292. these two women to get along.

  293. Now I can understand

  294. how we can fall out.

  295. We can say something

  296. which is misunderstood.

  297. We can break trust

  298. with a brother or a sister.

  299. We can fail to see

  300. how we might have offended someone.

  301. Relationships can become tangled.

  302. We can lash out at someone

  303. and find it hard

  304. to make things right again.

  305. There's nothing

  306. that Satan loves more

  307. than to see disunity

  308. among God's people.

  309. Paul is very careful here

  310. by not mentioning

  311. the specific dispute

  312. between these two women

  313. because it leaves room

  314. for us to fill in

  315. our own details.

  316. He also leaves

  317. anonymous the Yokefellow.

  318. We can fill in

  319. our own names in there too.

  320. If we see relationships

  321. strained within the church

  322. we have a duty to help.

  323. Not sticking our noses

  324. just to get the lowdown

  325. on who said what

  326. and who did what

  327. but to get alongside

  328. the hurt parties

  329. and try and work

  330. a way forward.

  331. United in the gospel

  332. for the purpose

  333. of building God's people

  334. we want to be people

  335. who see our sin

  336. who deal with it.

  337. Putting it to death

  338. and rejoicing together

  339. in the forgiveness

  340. offered to us by Jesus.

  341. Bathing in the grace

  342. that comes from our identity

  343. in Christ

  344. as forgiven people.

  345. We want to be people

  346. who are quick

  347. to go to each other

  348. and ask for forgiveness

  349. when we have hurt someone

  350. and pray together

  351. thanking God

  352. that because he has made us

  353. new in Christ

  354. we can extend

  355. that same forgiveness

  356. to each other.

  357. Asking God

  358. to heal the hurt

  359. and the broken trust

  360. and restore the relationship.

  361. If there is disunity

  362. in the church

  363. how can we stand together

  364. against the enemy

  365. outside?

  366. And how can we show

  367. people Christ

  368. if we are bickering

  369. inside

  370. just like the world?

  371. Paul gives us

  372. four helpful prompts.

  373. Peace in our relationships.

  374. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  375. I will say it again.

  376. Rejoice.

  377. From verse 4.

  378. Let your gentleness

  379. be evident to all.

  380. The Lord is near.

  381. Do not be anxious

  382. about anything

  383. but in every situation

  384. by prayer

  385. and petition

  386. with thanksgiving

  387. present your request

  388. to God

  389. and the peace of God

  390. which transcends

  391. all understanding

  392. will guard your hearts

  393. and your minds

  394. in Christ Jesus.

  395. Finally,

  396. brothers and sisters

  397. whatever is true

  398. whatever is noble

  399. whatever is right

  400. whatever is pure

  401. whatever is lovely

  402. whatever is admirable

  403. if anything is excellent

  404. or praiseworthy

  405. think about such things.

  406. Whatever you have learned

  407. or received

  408. or heard from me

  409. or seen in me

  410. put it into practice

  411. and the God of peace

  412. will be with you.

  413. At first glance

  414. this seems like

  415. a ridiculous statement.

  416. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  417. Remember Paul is in chains

  418. he's in prison

  419. and he's encouraging them

  420. to rejoice.

  421. You could be forgiven

  422. for thinking that

  423. it's just a typo

  424. and what Paul really meant

  425. to say was

  426. grumble to the Lord

  427. when things don't go your way

  428. but at all other times

  429. then it's okay to rejoice.

  430. But expecting that

  431. we might think that

  432. Paul repeats it

  433. so that we don't miss it.

  434. He says rejoice.

  435. He says it again.

  436. Surely not Paul.

  437. Not when we're bickering

  438. with fellow believers.

  439. You don't know

  440. how much they've hurt me.

  441. We can't be expected

  442. to rejoice.

  443. Surely not when we're stuck

  444. when you're stuck

  445. in chains in prison.

  446. Surely not

  447. when we are just exhausted

  448. because we've been up

  449. half the night

  450. with a screaming child.

  451. Surely Paul

  452. you can't expect

  453. either the Philippians

  454. or us

  455. to rejoice

  456. when you really

  457. don't understand

  458. what we have to put up with

  459. on a daily basis.

  460. We have a boss

  461. that we don't like.

  462. A job

  463. that we can't stand.

  464. Or no job

  465. when we can't seem

  466. to find one.

  467. A spouse

  468. who we don't get on

  469. with anymore.

  470. Pain that is unbearable

  471. and daily.

  472. Habits which we can't break.

  473. Financial worries

  474. which seem

  475. like they have

  476. no solution.

  477. And that's just

  478. our situations.

  479. How can we rejoice

  480. when the world

  481. is in turmoil?

  482. When terrorism abounds?

  483. When earthquakes

  484. wipe out

  485. entire cities?

  486. When religious

  487. intolerance

  488. and fear

  489. prevent us

  490. from wearing

  491. what we like

  492. at the beach?

  493. The list goes on.

  494. With such persecution

  495. for people of faith

  496. in Jesus

  497. people facing death

  498. because they

  499. preach Jesus

  500. as Lord.

  501. Surely Paul

  502. you don't mean

  503. this message

  504. for us.

  505. Rejoice in the Lord

  506. always.

  507. I find it hard

  508. enough to do it

  509. once a week

  510. on a Sunday

  511. with music

  512. to help.

  513. But of course

  514. as we have

  515. already seen

  516. in the earlier

  517. chapters

  518. Paul is all too

  519. aware

  520. of what's going

  521. on around him.

  522. He knows

  523. his own past

  524. sins.

  525. We see that

  526. in chapter 3

  527. verse 6.

  528. So he knows

  529. how bad

  530. he really is.

  531. His friends

  532. are really

  533. suffering.

  534. We saw that

  535. in chapter 1

  536. verses 29

  537. and 30

  538. where it says

  539. for it has

  540. been granted

  541. to you

  542. on behalf

  543. of Christ

  544. not only

  545. to believe

  546. on him

  547. but also

  548. to suffer

  549. for him

  550. since you

  551. are going

  552. through the

  553. same struggle

  554. you saw

  555. I had

  556. and now

  557. hear that

  558. I still

  559. have.

  560. Paul himself

  561. is a prisoner

  562. and facing

  563. the possibility

  564. of death

  565. and yet

  566. he rejoices

  567. and tells us

  568. to do

  569. and others

  570. to do

  571. likewise.

  572. We see

  573. here that

  574. circumstances

  575. don't determine

  576. the condition

  577. of the heart

  578. and mind.

  579. As Christians

  580. we can be

  581. joyful inside

  582. when all around

  583. us is dark

  584. or in turmoil.

  585. That joy

  586. comes from

  587. the security

  588. of life

  589. with Christ.

  590. We looked

  591. at that a few

  592. weeks ago

  593. in chapter 3

  594. verse 9

  595. where Paul

  596. says

  597. not having

  598. a righteousness

  599. of my own

  600. that comes

  601. from the law

  602. but that which

  603. is through

  604. faith in Christ.

  605. Christ.

  606. We are made

  607. right with

  608. God

  609. because

  610. and only

  611. through Jesus.

  612. Not on our

  613. own merits.

  614. That's good

  615. news.

  616. That's why

  617. we rejoice.

  618. Verse 5

  619. carries on.

  620. Let your

  621. gentleness

  622. be evident

  623. to all.

  624. The Lord

  625. is near.

  626. The word

  627. gentleness

  628. here could

  629. have been

  630. translated.

  631. This is a

  632. big long

  633. list so

  634. listen up.

  635. The word

  636. gentleness

  637. could have

  638. been translated

  639. in many

  640. different ways.

  641. It could

  642. have been

  643. translated

  644. as big

  645. hearted,

  646. forbearance,

  647. yieldedness,

  648. geniality,

  649. kindliness,

  650. sweet reasonableness,

  651. considerateness,

  652. charitableness,

  653. mildness,

  654. magnanimity,

  655. generosity.

  656. The point

  657. is that

  658. the Christian

  659. cannot keep

  660. the secrets

  661. of this

  662. happiness

  663. to himself.

  664. He needs

  665. to be

  666. other centred.

  667. In fact

  668. we mentioned

  669. that also

  670. a few weeks

  671. ago in

  672. chapter 2

  673. verse 3

  674. when talking

  675. about being

  676. one in

  677. spirit and

  678. of one

  679. mind.

  680. It says

  681. do nothing

  682. out of

  683. selfish

  684. ambition

  685. or vain

  686. conceit,

  687. rather in

  688. humility

  689. value others

  690. above yourself.

  691. Not looking

  692. to your own

  693. interests but

  694. each of you

  695. to the

  696. interests of

  697. others.

  698. We need

  699. to be

  700. striving to

  701. be a

  702. blessing to

  703. others,

  704. all others,

  705. not just

  706. fellow believers,

  707. because all

  708. of this is

  709. said in the

  710. context of

  711. the Lord

  712. being near,

  713. meaning

  714. he will

  715. come again

  716. soon.

  717. We know

  718. that the

  719. promises of

  720. God to

  721. his people

  722. will become

  723. reality.

  724. Believers,

  725. in spite of

  726. persecution and

  727. suffering,

  728. can afford to

  729. be mild and

  730. charitable in

  731. their relation to

  732. others,

  733. because we know

  734. that this

  735. world and

  736. our time in

  737. it is

  738. fleeting.

  739. So how we

  740. conduct ourselves

  741. is important.

  742. How we

  743. respond to

  744. life's ups and

  745. downs is

  746. witnessed and

  747. noticed.

  748. How we work

  749. out our

  750. differences,

  751. how we

  752. challenge each

  753. other in

  754. love is

  755. seen.

  756. So let's

  757. be gentle.

  758. Jesus is

  759. coming.

  760. How he

  761. will rejoice

  762. in us if

  763. he finds us

  764. rejoicing in

  765. him, being

  766. content to be

  767. like him.

  768. Peace in

  769. our

  770. circumstances.

  771. If the

  772. rules for our

  773. relationships were

  774. to rejoice in

  775. the Lord,

  776. then the

  777. rules for our

  778. circumstances are

  779. much easier.

  780. Paul clearly

  781. says to us

  782. what the

  783. cure for

  784. worry or

  785. anxiety is.

  786. Did you

  787. spot it?

  788. What's the

  789. remedy for

  790. worry?

  791. Anybody?

  792. Verse 6,

  793. do not be

  794. anxious about

  795. anything.

  796. The cure for

  797. worry?

  798. Don't worry.

  799. Easy.

  800. Right, so let's

  801. move on.

  802. That's peace in

  803. our circumstances

  804. towards it.

  805. But of course,

  806. it's not that

  807. easy, is it?

  808. The eagle-eyed

  809. of you will

  810. have seen or

  811. remember Paul

  812. himself already

  813. saying in

  814. chapter 2,

  815. verse 28,

  816. speaking of

  817. Epaphroditus,

  818. who had been

  819. very unwell,

  820. and who Paul

  821. was now eager

  822. to send back

  823. to the

  824. Philippians.

  825. It says

  826. there,

  827. verse 28 of

  828. chapter 2,

  829. so that when

  830. you, speaking

  831. of the

  832. Philippians,

  833. see him

  834. again, you

  835. may be glad,

  836. and I may

  837. have less

  838. anxiety.

  839. Is Paul

  840. breaking his

  841. own rules?

  842. He says

  843. do not

  844. worry, and

  845. here he is

  846. anxious himself.

  847. Double

  848. standards,

  849. perhaps?

  850. Well, of

  851. course not.

  852. This is

  853. Paul.

  854. There is

  855. such a

  856. thing as

  857. kindly

  858. concern,

  859. or a

  860. genuine

  861. interest in

  862. the welfare

  863. of others,

  864. like Timothy

  865. had for

  866. Philippians

  867. in chapter

  868. 2,

  869. verse 20.

  870. He says,

  871. I have

  872. no one

  873. else like

  874. him who

  875. will show

  876. genuine

  877. concern for

  878. your welfare.

  879. But there

  880. is also the

  881. type of worry

  882. or anxiety

  883. which is

  884. to be

  885. unduly

  886. concerned

  887. about

  888. something.

  889. For

  890. example,

  891. food,

  892. drink,

  893. clothes,

  894. or how

  895. long we'll

  896. live,

  897. or the

  898. future,

  899. or, I

  900. don't know,

  901. you fill in

  902. the blank,

  903. what do you

  904. worry about?

  905. Paul does

  906. give us a

  907. remedy,

  908. though.

  909. But in

  910. every situation,

  911. by prayer

  912. and petition,

  913. with

  914. thanksgiving,

  915. present your

  916. requests

  917. to God.

  918. The cure

  919. for worry

  920. is prayer.

  921. The beginning

  922. of the

  923. enjoyment of

  924. peace is

  925. thanksgiving.

  926. These two

  927. go together,

  928. prayer and

  929. thanksgiving.

  930. In prayer,

  931. we are simply

  932. a child

  933. coming to

  934. our father,

  935. asking him

  936. for help.

  937. Nothing more,

  938. nothing less.

  939. As we

  940. thank God

  941. for all

  942. he has

  943. done,

  944. we begin

  945. to accept

  946. the worrying

  947. circumstances

  948. as something

  949. which God

  950. has actually

  951. appointed.

  952. After all,

  953. he is

  954. all-wise,

  955. he is

  956. all-loving,

  957. and he is

  958. all-sovereign.

  959. In prayer,

  960. anxiety is

  961. resolved by

  962. trust in

  963. God.

  964. The thing

  965. which causes

  966. us to

  967. worry in

  968. the first

  969. place is

  970. brought to

  971. God,

  972. the one

  973. who is

  974. totally

  975. competent,

  976. and in

  977. whose

  978. hands

  979. the issue

  980. can be

  981. left.

  982. When we

  983. worry,

  984. what we

  985. are asking

  986. is how.

  987. How will

  988. I cope?

  989. How will

  990. I survive?

  991. How will

  992. I persevere?

  993. Prayer takes

  994. those questions

  995. and points

  996. away from

  997. us to

  998. God.

  999. Let me

  1000. say that

  1001. again with

  1002. an illustration.

  1003. Prayer

  1004. takes those

  1005. questions

  1006. and points

  1007. away from

  1008. us and

  1009. up to

  1010. God,

  1011. to God's

  1012. resources

  1013. and to

  1014. God's

  1015. promises.

  1016. We'll be

  1017. mentioning

  1018. those promises

  1019. a little bit

  1020. later on.

  1021. When we

  1022. worry,

  1023. we also

  1024. ask the

  1025. question,

  1026. why?

  1027. Why has

  1028. this happened

  1029. to me?

  1030. Why does

  1031. God allow

  1032. these things

  1033. happen?

  1034. Thanksgiving

  1035. takes the

  1036. question of

  1037. why and

  1038. points us

  1039. again to

  1040. God,

  1041. the one

  1042. who is

  1043. sovereign and

  1044. works all

  1045. things for

  1046. good for

  1047. those who

  1048. love him?

  1049. God never

  1050. acts without

  1051. purpose.

  1052. His purposes

  1053. never fail.

  1054. Thanksgiving

  1055. requires humility,

  1056. submitting to

  1057. his will and

  1058. acknowledging that

  1059. his ways are

  1060. best, even

  1061. when, and

  1062. especially when,

  1063. we can't see

  1064. the end to

  1065. the problems.

  1066. Peace in our

  1067. thoughts.

  1068. verse 8.

  1069. Finally,

  1070. brothers and

  1071. sisters,

  1072. whatever is

  1073. true,

  1074. whatever is

  1075. noble,

  1076. whatever is

  1077. right,

  1078. whatever is

  1079. pure,

  1080. whatever is

  1081. lovely,

  1082. whatever is

  1083. admirable,

  1084. if anything

  1085. is excellent

  1086. or praiseworthy,

  1087. think about

  1088. such things.

  1089. Think about

  1090. such things.

  1091. What does

  1092. that mean?

  1093. Paul is

  1094. describing a

  1095. deeper kind

  1096. of thinking

  1097. here.

  1098. He wants

  1099. us to think

  1100. deeply about

  1101. the things

  1102. mentioned.

  1103. If someone

  1104. asked you to

  1105. think deeply

  1106. about something,

  1107. how would you

  1108. go about

  1109. doing it?

  1110. How do you

  1111. think deeply

  1112. about something?

  1113. Well, can I

  1114. make some

  1115. suggestions?

  1116. Because I

  1117. didn't know

  1118. how to answer

  1119. that question

  1120. either.

  1121. Can I suggest

  1122. that it means

  1123. to meditate

  1124. on, to

  1125. really ponder,

  1126. to give

  1127. proper weight

  1128. and consideration

  1129. and time to

  1130. let it sink

  1131. in, and

  1132. then to allow

  1133. the results

  1134. to really

  1135. influence the

  1136. way we live

  1137. our life?

  1138. Let these

  1139. things in

  1140. this list,

  1141. let these

  1142. types of

  1143. things be

  1144. what we

  1145. think about

  1146. in the

  1147. quieter times

  1148. of the day.

  1149. When the

  1150. kids have

  1151. gone to

  1152. bed and

  1153. we're

  1154. tempted to

  1155. go channel

  1156. hopping,

  1157. or when

  1158. we peruse

  1159. through the

  1160. magazines,

  1161. when we

  1162. fill our

  1163. eyes and

  1164. our minds

  1165. with unhelpful

  1166. images or

  1167. unattainable

  1168. items or

  1169. fashions,

  1170. the books we

  1171. read, the

  1172. websites we

  1173. revert to

  1174. to kill a

  1175. few minutes,

  1176. an earthly

  1177. mind is a

  1178. quick path to

  1179. the downward

  1180. path of

  1181. destruction.

  1182. However, a

  1183. mind disciplined

  1184. in the

  1185. things of

  1186. God and

  1187. of which

  1188. he approves

  1189. is the

  1190. steadiest

  1191. way to

  1192. practical

  1193. holiness.

  1194. By giving

  1195. attention to

  1196. things of

  1197. which God

  1198. approves,

  1199. like what's

  1200. listed above,

  1201. we will

  1202. shape our

  1203. minds to

  1204. be like

  1205. him.

  1206. This

  1207. requires

  1208. discipline.

  1209. These kind

  1210. of thoughts

  1211. don't come

  1212. easy.

  1213. The

  1214. Philippians,

  1215. if we

  1216. remember from

  1217. chapter 3,

  1218. verses 18

  1219. to 19,

  1220. we're a

  1221. morally

  1222. dubious

  1223. bunch.

  1224. Let's

  1225. read that

  1226. together.

  1227. 3, 18.

  1228. For as I

  1229. have often

  1230. told you

  1231. before and

  1232. now tell

  1233. you again,

  1234. even with

  1235. tears,

  1236. many live

  1237. as enemies

  1238. of the

  1239. cross of

  1240. Christ.

  1241. Their

  1242. destiny is

  1243. destruction,

  1244. their God

  1245. is their

  1246. stomach,

  1247. and their

  1248. glory is in

  1249. their shame.

  1250. Their mind

  1251. is set on

  1252. earthly things.

  1253. We too,

  1254. like them,

  1255. can have

  1256. our heads

  1257. turned to

  1258. things of

  1259. the world.

  1260. So again,

  1261. Paul gives

  1262. us a

  1263. remedy.

  1264. Whatever

  1265. is true,

  1266. whatever

  1267. is noble,

  1268. whatever

  1269. is right,

  1270. whatever

  1271. is pure,

  1272. whatever

  1273. is lovely,

  1274. whatever

  1275. is admirable,

  1276. if anything

  1277. is excellent

  1278. or praiseworthy,

  1279. think about

  1280. these things.

  1281. If we're

  1282. not sure

  1283. what those

  1284. things are

  1285. exactly,

  1286. let's look

  1287. at the

  1288. kind of

  1289. things that

  1290. Paul has

  1291. already

  1292. mentioned.

  1293. Chapter

  1294. 3,

  1295. verse 10.

  1296. I want

  1297. to know

  1298. Christ,

  1299. yes,

  1300. to know

  1301. the power

  1302. of his

  1303. resurrection

  1304. and participation

  1305. in his

  1306. sufferings,

  1307. becoming like

  1308. him in

  1309. his death,

  1310. and so

  1311. somehow

  1312. attaining to

  1313. the resurrection

  1314. from the

  1315. dead.

  1316. Not that I

  1317. have already

  1318. obtained all

  1319. this,

  1320. or have

  1321. already

  1322. arrived at

  1323. my goal,

  1324. but I

  1325. press on

  1326. to take

  1327. hold of

  1328. that for

  1329. which

  1330. Christ

  1331. Jesus

  1332. took hold

  1333. of me.

  1334. Brothers

  1335. and sisters,

  1336. I do not

  1337. consider myself

  1338. yet

  1339. to have

  1340. taken hold

  1341. of it,

  1342. but one

  1343. thing I

  1344. do,

  1345. forgetting

  1346. what is

  1347. behind and

  1348. straining

  1349. towards what

  1350. is ahead,

  1351. I press

  1352. on towards

  1353. the goal

  1354. to win

  1355. the prize

  1356. for which

  1357. God has

  1358. called me

  1359. heavenward

  1360. in Christ

  1361. Jesus.

  1362. Jesus is

  1363. Paul's sole

  1364. focus in

  1365. life.

  1366. His letters

  1367. to all the

  1368. churches are

  1369. encouraging them

  1370. to keep

  1371. on with

  1372. Jesus.

  1373. Back in

  1374. the beginning

  1375. of Philippians,

  1376. he says in

  1377. his opening

  1378. address from

  1379. verse 9,

  1380. and this

  1381. is my

  1382. prayer,

  1383. that your

  1384. love may

  1385. abound

  1386. more and

  1387. more in

  1388. knowledge and

  1389. depth of

  1390. insight so

  1391. that you

  1392. may be able

  1393. to discern

  1394. what is

  1395. best and

  1396. may be

  1397. pure and

  1398. blameless for

  1399. the day of

  1400. Christ,

  1401. filled with

  1402. the fruit of

  1403. righteousness

  1404. that comes

  1405. through Jesus

  1406. Christ to

  1407. the glory and

  1408. praise of

  1409. God.

  1410. What is

  1411. true?

  1412. What is

  1413. noble?

  1414. What is

  1415. right or

  1416. pure or

  1417. lovely or

  1418. admirable?

  1419. What is

  1420. excellent or

  1421. praiseworthy?

  1422. Think about

  1423. these things.

  1424. Let our

  1425. thoughts and

  1426. our

  1427. conversations,

  1428. our

  1429. motivations and

  1430. our deepest

  1431. longings be

  1432. about Jesus.

  1433. Peace in

  1434. our behaviour.

  1435. We have

  1436. heard twice in

  1437. this series from

  1438. the latter part of

  1439. chapter 2 and

  1440. last week in

  1441. the latter part of

  1442. chapter 3 the

  1443. importance of

  1444. role models.

  1445. Chapter 2

  1446. mentioned Timothy

  1447. and Epaphroditus.

  1448. Here Paul says

  1449. in verse 9,

  1450. whatever you

  1451. have learned or

  1452. received or

  1453. heard from me

  1454. or seen in

  1455. me, put it

  1456. into practice.

  1457. Now of

  1458. course we

  1459. didn't know

  1460. Paul like

  1461. the Philippians

  1462. did.

  1463. So how does

  1464. this apply to

  1465. us?

  1466. Well we have

  1467. learned and

  1468. received God's

  1469. word from

  1470. Paul.

  1471. We have

  1472. seen how

  1473. he reacted in

  1474. different

  1475. situations.

  1476. He writes

  1477. with the very

  1478. authority of

  1479. the word of

  1480. God.

  1481. Paul's words

  1482. are God's

  1483. words.

  1484. to us.

  1485. He practiced

  1486. what he

  1487. preached.

  1488. So when he

  1489. tells us to

  1490. put into

  1491. practice what

  1492. we have

  1493. learned or

  1494. received or

  1495. heard from

  1496. him, he

  1497. isn't on some

  1498. kind of ego

  1499. trip where he

  1500. wants lots of

  1501. clones of

  1502. himself.

  1503. He is

  1504. speaking with

  1505. apostolic

  1506. authority.

  1507. Paul's words

  1508. are God's

  1509. words and

  1510. that is why

  1511. we should

  1512. listen to

  1513. him and

  1514. obey what

  1515. he says.

  1516. In the

  1517. previous

  1518. section on

  1519. our thoughts,

  1520. the thinking

  1521. and meditation

  1522. he was talking

  1523. about isn't

  1524. just theoretical

  1525. and abstract.

  1526. This verse

  1527. shows us that

  1528. we are to

  1529. think with

  1530. purpose and

  1531. the purpose

  1532. leads to

  1533. action.

  1534. William

  1535. Hendrickson in

  1536. his commentary

  1537. on Philippians

  1538. put it this

  1539. way,

  1540. true believers

  1541. hear,

  1542. they meditate

  1543. until they

  1544. understand,

  1545. then they act

  1546. upon it,

  1547. putting it into

  1548. constant practice,

  1549. thereby showing

  1550. that their house

  1551. was built upon

  1552. the rock of

  1553. Jesus.

  1554. How do we

  1555. wrestle with

  1556. scripture?

  1557. How do we

  1558. meditate on it?

  1559. Do we let it

  1560. sink deep into

  1561. our hearts and

  1562. our minds?

  1563. Do we consider

  1564. what we have

  1565. just read or

  1566. heard and how

  1567. we can become

  1568. more like Jesus

  1569. by carrying out

  1570. what we have

  1571. just read or

  1572. heard?

  1573. Is the Bible

  1574. just a book

  1575. that we read

  1576. on a Sunday

  1577. morning?

  1578. As we come

  1579. towards the

  1580. conclusion,

  1581. let me share

  1582. a funny story

  1583. I heard

  1584. recently

  1585. remembering

  1586. the game

  1587. Simon Says.

  1588. You all

  1589. remember the

  1590. game?

  1591. The game

  1592. went something

  1593. like this.

  1594. Simon Says

  1595. pat your

  1596. head and

  1597. you all

  1598. pat your

  1599. head.

  1600. Simon Says

  1601. jump on

  1602. one leg

  1603. and you

  1604. all jumped

  1605. on one

  1606. leg.

  1607. Well,

  1608. it's a

  1609. simple game

  1610. but the

  1611. Bible is

  1612. like that

  1613. too but

  1614. we've

  1615. tended to

  1616. make it

  1617. more

  1618. complicated

  1619. than that.

  1620. The

  1621. Bible

  1622. says,

  1623. therefore

  1624. God

  1625. says,

  1626. be of

  1627. the same

  1628. mind.

  1629. Verse

  1630. 2.

  1631. God

  1632. says,

  1633. rejoice

  1634. in the

  1635. Lord

  1636. always.

  1637. Verse

  1638. 4.

  1639. God

  1640. says,

  1641. let your

  1642. gentleness

  1643. be evident

  1644. to all.

  1645. Verse

  1646. 5.

  1647. God

  1648. says,

  1649. do not

  1650. be anxious.

  1651. Verse

  1652. 6.

  1653. God

  1654. says,

  1655. put into

  1656. practice.

  1657. Verse

  1658. 9.

  1659. God

  1660. says,

  1661. present

  1662. your

  1663. requests.

  1664. Pray.

  1665. Verse

  1666. 6 again.

  1667. Think

  1668. about

  1669. these

  1670. things.

  1671. Verse

  1672. 8.

  1673. God

  1674. says,

  1675. put into

  1676. practice.

  1677. Verse

  1678. 9.

  1679. All of

  1680. these

  1681. are

  1682. God

  1683. says

  1684. statements.

  1685. There's

  1686. no

  1687. tricky

  1688. little

  1689. Simon

  1690. says

  1691. bluffs

  1692. where

  1693. Simon

  1694. doesn't

  1695. say

  1696. it.

  1697. God

  1698. does

  1699. say

  1700. these

  1701. things.

  1702. This

  1703. is

  1704. God's

  1705. word

  1706. and

  1707. he

  1708. does

  1709. say

  1710. it.

  1711. Can

  1712. you

  1713. imagine

  1714. if

  1715. you

  1716. said

  1717. to

  1718. your

  1719. child,

  1720. go

  1721. and

  1722. clean

  1723. your

  1724. room.

  1725. And

  1726. they

  1727. went

  1728. off,

  1729. came

  1730. back

  1731. an

  1732. hour

  1733. later

  1734. and

  1735. said,

  1736. mom,

  1737. dad,

  1738. I

  1739. heard

  1740. what

  1741. you

  1742. said

  1743. and

  1744. I

  1745. even

  1746. memorised

  1747. it.

  1748. Go

  1749. and

  1750. clean

  1751. your

  1752. room,

  1753. they

  1754. said.

  1755. What

  1756. you

  1757. said

  1758. was

  1759. so

  1760. good,

  1761. I

  1762. even

  1763. used

  1764. it

  1765. as

  1766. a

  1767. caption

  1768. for

  1769. my

  1770. latest

  1771. Facebook

  1772. status.

  1773. Well,

  1774. you'd

  1775. be

  1776. disgusted,

  1777. wouldn't

  1778. you?

  1779. We

  1780. expect

  1781. our

  1782. child

  1783. to

  1784. go

  1785. and

  1786. clean

  1787. their

  1788. room

  1789. when

  1790. we

  1791. tell

  1792. them

  1793. to

  1794. go

  1795. and

  1796. clean

  1797. their

  1798. room.

  1799. If

  1800. we

  1801. are

  1802. followers

  1803. of

  1804. Jesus,

  1805. we

  1806. can't

  1807. just

  1808. memorise

  1809. scripture

  1810. or learn

  1811. it in

  1812. Greek.

  1813. We

  1814. need

  1815. to be

  1816. doers

  1817. of

  1818. Jesus'

  1819. words.

  1820. Now,

  1821. this

  1822. all

  1823. sounds

  1824. pretty

  1825. strict

  1826. and

  1827. pretty

  1828. hard.

  1829. How

  1830. am

  1831. I

  1832. meant

  1833. to

  1834. do

  1835. all

  1836. of

  1837. these

  1838. things

  1839. that

  1840. we

  1841. looked

  1842. at

  1843. this

  1844. morning?

  1845. Or

  1846. the

  1847. things

  1848. that

  1849. we

  1850. learnt

  1851. last

  1852. week?

  1853. Or

  1854. all

  1855. the

  1856. rules

  1857. in

  1858. the

  1859. other

  1860. parts

  1861. of

  1862. the

  1863. Bible?

  1864. Leviticus

  1865. itself

  1866. would

  1867. make

  1868. my

  1869. head

  1870. melt.

  1871. We

  1872. already

  1873. know

  1874. how

  1875. impossible

  1876. the

  1877. Ten

  1878. Commandments

  1879. are

  1880. to

  1881. keep.

  1882. Thankfully,

  1883. we have

  1884. good news.

  1885. We have

  1886. missed out

  1887. two

  1888. major

  1889. promises.

  1890. Am I

  1891. up to

  1892. date?

  1893. Yes.

  1894. We have

  1895. missed out

  1896. two

  1897. major

  1898. promises

  1899. in this

  1900. passage.

  1901. The

  1902. key to

  1903. the

  1904. whole

  1905. talk

  1906. this

  1907. morning.

  1908. Look

  1909. with me

  1910. again

  1911. at

  1912. verse

  1913. seven

  1914. for

  1915. the

  1916. first

  1917. promise.

  1918. Do

  1919. not

  1920. be

  1921. anxious

  1922. about

  1923. anything,

  1924. but

  1925. in

  1926. every

  1927. situation

  1928. by

  1929. prayer

  1930. and

  1931. petition

  1932. with

  1933. thanksgiving

  1934. present

  1935. your

  1936. request

  1937. to

  1938. God

  1939. and

  1940. the

  1941. peace

  1942. of

  1943. God

  1944. which

  1945. transcends

  1946. all

  1947. understanding

  1948. will

  1949. guard

  1950. your

  1951. hearts

  1952. and

  1953. your

  1954. minds

  1955. in

  1956. Christ

  1957. Jesus.

  1958. With

  1959. all

  1960. of

  1961. these

  1962. rules

  1963. there's

  1964. a

  1965. promise,

  1966. a

  1967. promise

  1968. of

  1969. blessing.

  1970. When

  1971. we look

  1972. for

  1973. peace

  1974. in our

  1975. relationships,

  1976. the rule

  1977. is to

  1978. rejoice

  1979. in the

  1980. Lord

  1981. and

  1982. bear

  1983. with

  1984. each

  1985. other.

  1986. When

  1987. we

  1988. seek

  1989. the

  1990. Lord

  1991. first

  1992. and

  1993. foremost

  1994. and

  1995. before

  1996. anyone

  1997. else,

  1998. when

  1999. he

  2000. is

  2001. our

  2002. joy,

  2003. when

  2004. we

  2005. bear

  2006. with

  2007. each

  2008. other

  2009. because

  2010. our

  2011. identity

  2012. is

  2013. in

  2014. Christ

  2015. Jesus,

  2016. then

  2017. the

  2018. promise

  2019. is that

  2020. we'll

  2021. have

  2022. the

  2023. peace

  2024. of

  2025. God

  2026. which

  2027. transcends

  2028. all

  2029. understanding.

  2030. When

  2031. we look

  2032. for peace

  2033. in our

  2034. circumstances,

  2035. the

  2036. promise

  2037. is that

  2038. the peace

  2039. of God

  2040. will

  2041. guard

  2042. our

  2043. hearts

  2044. and

  2045. minds

  2046. from

  2047. worry

  2048. when

  2049. we

  2050. bring

  2051. things

  2052. to

  2053. God

  2054. in

  2055. prayer

  2056. and

  2057. thanksgiving.

  2058. The

  2059. second

  2060. promise

  2061. and

  2062. the

  2063. God

  2064. of

  2065. peace

  2066. will

  2067. be

  2068. with

  2069. you.

  2070. The

  2071. end

  2072. of

  2073. verse

  2074. nine

  2075. and

  2076. the

  2077. God

  2078. of

  2079. peace

  2080. will

  2081. be

  2082. with

  2083. you.

  2084. When

  2085. we

  2086. look

  2087. for

  2088. peace

  2089. in

  2090. our

  2091. thoughts,

  2092. when

  2093. we

  2094. focus

  2095. on

  2096. the

  2097. things

  2098. of

  2099. which

  2100. he

  2101. approves,

  2102. which

  2103. will

  2104. make

  2105. us

  2106. more

  2107. like

  2108. him,

  2109. the

  2110. peace

  2111. will

  2112. be

  2113. with

  2114. us.

  2115. When

  2116. we

  2117. look

  2118. for

  2119. peace

  2120. in

  2121. our

  2122. behavior,

  2123. when

  2124. we

  2125. seek

  2126. to

  2127. live

  2128. the

  2129. life

  2130. of

  2131. which

  2132. God

  2133. approves,

  2134. the

  2135. promise

  2136. is

  2137. that

  2138. the

  2139. God

  2140. of

  2141. peace

  2142. will

  2143. be

  2144. with

  2145. us.

  2146. These

  2147. rules

  2148. aren't

  2149. actually

  2150. all that

  2151. daunting

  2152. because

  2153. let's

  2154. face

  2155. this,

  2156. we

  2157. can't

  2158. keep

  2159. them.

  2160. We

  2161. are

  2162. going

  2163. to

  2164. fail

  2165. if

  2166. we

  2167. just

  2168. go

  2169. off

  2170. and

  2171. try

  2172. and

  2173. keep

  2174. them

  2175. on

  2176. our

  2177. own

  2178. strength.

  2179. But

  2180. be

  2181. encouraged

  2182. this

  2183. morning.

  2184. As

  2185. we

  2186. go,

  2187. the

  2188. God

  2189. of

  2190. peace

  2191. goes

  2192. with

  2193. us.

  2194. Paul

  2195. tells

  2196. us

  2197. in

  2198. verse

  2199. 9

  2200. to

  2201. put

  2202. it

  2203. into

  2204. practice.

  2205. He

  2206. doesn't

  2207. expect

  2208. us

  2209. to

  2210. do

  2211. it

  2212. all

  2213. perfectly,

  2214. but

  2215. to

  2216. practice.

  2217. And

  2218. as

  2219. we

  2220. practice

  2221. godly

  2222. living,

  2223. the

  2224. God

  2225. of

  2226. peace

  2227. is

  2228. with

  2229. us.

  2230. There

  2231. are

  2232. many

  2233. things

  2234. which

  2235. will

  2236. distract

  2237. us.

  2238. The

  2239. world

  2240. is

  2241. full

  2242. of

  2243. distractions.

  2244. If

  2245. as a

  2246. church

  2247. we

  2248. are

  2249. to

  2250. stand

  2251. firm

  2252. in

  2253. the

  2254. world,

  2255. we

  2256. must

  2257. be

  2258. united

  2259. and

  2260. help

  2261. each

  2262. other

  2263. to

  2264. be

  2265. so.

  2266. We

  2267. must

  2268. model

  2269. our

  2270. relationships

  2271. on

  2272. Christ,

  2273. surround

  2274. our

  2275. circumstances,

  2276. be they

  2277. good or

  2278. bad,

  2279. with

  2280. prayer and

  2281. thanksgiving,

  2282. train

  2283. our minds

  2284. in godly

  2285. thinking,

  2286. and be

  2287. constantly

  2288. subjecting

  2289. our life

  2290. to the

  2291. word of

  2292. God.

  2293. do

  2294. this,

  2295. and the

  2296. peace

  2297. of

  2298. God

  2299. will

  2300. guard

  2301. our

  2302. hearts

  2303. and

  2304. minds

  2305. in

  2306. Christ

  2307. Jesus,

  2308. and the

  2309. God

  2310. of

  2311. peace

  2312. will

  2313. be

  2314. with

  2315. us.

  2316. But

  2317. be

  2318. warned,

  2319. if we

  2320. ignore the

  2321. rules,

  2322. we must

  2323. be prepared

  2324. to forego

  2325. the

  2326. blessings.

  2327. Let us

  2328. pray.

  2329. Heavenly

  2330. Father,

  2331. we are

  2332. thankful

  2333. this morning

  2334. for this

  2335. book.

  2336. Thank

  2337. you for

  2338. the

  2339. series

  2340. on

  2341. Philippians

  2342. over

  2343. these

  2344. last

  2345. few

  2346. months.

  2347. Lord,

  2348. thank

  2349. you

  2350. for

  2351. the

  2352. obedience

  2353. that

  2354. Paul

  2355. has

  2356. shown

  2357. us,

  2358. the

  2359. model

  2360. that

  2361. he

  2362. is.

  2363. Thank

  2364. you

  2365. for

  2366. the

  2367. example

  2368. of

  2369. rejoicing

  2370. in

  2371. hard

  2372. situations

  2373. which

  2374. he

  2375. models

  2376. for

  2377. us.

  2378. We

  2379. realise

  2380. there

  2381. are

  2382. tough

  2383. challenges

  2384. in

  2385. this

  2386. passage.

  2387. Help

  2388. us

  2389. to

  2390. be

  2391. people

  2392. of

  2393. peace.

  2394. Help

  2395. us

  2396. to

  2397. reach

  2398. out

  2399. in

  2400. broken

  2401. relationships

  2402. and

  2403. bring

  2404. your

  2405. healing.

  2406. Help

  2407. us

  2408. to
