  1. Sanctifying in this context means the Holy Spirit sets us apart.

  2. He marks us out as those who will belong to God.

  3. In fact, the Holy Spirit's work, his primary work,

  4. is to make our belonging to God a reality in our lives.

  5. A few years ago, Kirsty and I had to write a will.

  6. And in that will it states that should anything ever happen to us,

  7. all that we own, all our belongings, will go to our children.

  8. Which means a mortgage, by the way.

  9. They will receive ownership of all that we have.

  10. Now for that to happen, we need a guarantor

  11. who will enact what the will says to ensure that they receive

  12. everything that has been willed to them.

  13. Now in the same way, as we've just seen,

  14. in eternity past, the Father has willed,

  15. he has chosen us to be his children.

  16. And the Holy Spirit acts as the guarantor.

  17. He sets us apart, making sure that we will become God's children

  18. and that we will belong to him.

  19. He makes the will of God a reality in our lives.

  20. You see, as a Christian,

  21. we might be outsiders in this world.

  22. We might feel alone and abandoned and that nobody understands.

  23. We may experience a form of isolation.

  24. But because of the Spirit's work in our lives,

  25. we have been set apart by God

  26. and called to be God's children.

  27. We're not loners,

  28. wandering around without purpose and without meaning.

  29. We've been set apart,

  30. marked out by the Holy Spirit

  31. to live as God's people in this world.

  32. Don't let the world

  33. make your identity.

  34. Let God shape your identity.

  35. So we've been chosen by the Father,

  36. set apart by the Spirit,

  37. and now belong to Jesus.

  38. Let's read again,

  39. chapter 1, verse 1,

  40. to God's elect.

  41. Verse 2,

  42. who've been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,

  43. through the setting apart work of the Spirit,

  44. for obedience to Jesus Christ,

  45. and sprinkling by the blood of Jesus Christ.

  46. Now, to help us understand this,

  47. we need to go back to a very important occasion

  48. in the Old Testament.

  49. So keep your finger in 1 Peter.

  50. Let's go back to Exodus, chapter 24.

    Exodus 24 chapter mention

  51. Exodus, chapter 24.

    Exodus 24 chapter mention

  52. And here we get an understanding

  53. of what that little phrase,

  54. for obedience to Jesus,

  55. and sprinkling by the blood of Jesus,

  56. what that means.

  57. So in Exodus 24,

  58. what's happened is,

  59. the people of Israel,

  60. remember,

  61. were taken into slavery in Egypt,

  62. and God comes,

  63. and he rescues them from Egypt,

  64. and he delivers them across,

  65. and promises to bring them to a new land and a new place.

  66. And towards that land,

  67. on their journey,

  68. God calls all the people together

  69. at Mount Sinai.

  70. And at this mountain,

  71. God enters into relationship

  72. with these people.

  73. It's where God makes a covenant.

  74. He makes a promise

  75. to belong to these people.

  76. And that's where we come to

  77. in Exodus, chapter 24,

    Exodus 24:7

  78. verse 7.

  79. So here they are,

  80. gathered at the mountain.

  81. God is speaking

  82. through Moses,

  83. their leader.

  84. Verse 7.

  85. Then he,

  86. that's Moses,

  87. took the book of the covenant

  88. and read it to the people.

  89. And they responded,

  90. we will do everything

  91. the Lord has said.

  92. We will obey.

  93. So everything that God says,

  94. we're going to do what God says.

  95. We're going to obey him.

  96. Verse 8.

  97. Moses then took the blood

  98. of an animal

  99. that had been sacrificed

  100. and sprinkled it on the people

  101. and said,

  102. this is the blood of the covenant

  103. that the Lord has made with you

  104. in accordance

  105. with all these words.

  106. So on the one side,

  107. the people,

  108. as they come into relationship

  109. with God,

  110. he says,

  111. the people say,

  112. we're going to obey God.

  113. We promise to obey God.

  114. And then God,

  115. on the other side,

  116. through the symbol

  117. of the sprinkling of the blood,

  118. promises to be committed

  119. to these people.

  120. It's God's way of saying,

  121. you belong to me

  122. and I belong to you.

  123. I am going to be your God

  124. and you're going to be my people.

  125. But why would he start

  126. sprinkling blood?

  127. It sounds really gross,

  128. doesn't it?

  129. You could imagine

  130. just blood being thrown around

  131. all on top of you just now.

  132. Why that?

  133. Well, the blood underlined

  134. the seriousness of this relationship,

  135. this commitment,

  136. one to each other.

  137. In other words,

  138. God is saying,

  139. I will give my life for you.

  140. I will be prepared

  141. to shed my blood for you.

  142. I will be ready to die for you

  143. so that you belong to me.

  144. Of course, as the story unfolds,

  145. the problem is

  146. the people keep on breaking

  147. their side of the promise.

  148. They continually disobey.

  149. They continually walk away from God

  150. and the relationship to God

  151. is completely broken.

  152. But now,

  153. as we see in 1 Peter,

  154. through Jesus,

  155. our belonging to him

  156. is now made permanent.

  157. It can never be broken

  158. because Jesus has come

  159. and he has stepped in for us.

  160. First of all,

  161. Jesus gives us

  162. his perfect obedience

  163. so that we always stand

  164. before God

  165. as right

  166. and as pure

  167. and as blameless

  168. because Jesus has clothed us

  169. with his perfection.

  170. But not only that,

  171. second,

  172. Jesus has taken the blame

  173. for all of our disobedience.

  174. And as Jesus died

  175. on the cross,

  176. all my disobedience

  177. was placed on him.

  178. He suffers the punishment

  179. that I deserve.

  180. He gives his life for me.

  181. He sheds his blood for me.

  182. He dies in place of me

  183. so that I,

  184. a rebel,

  185. can belong to him

  186. for all eternity.

  187. By faith

  188. in the death of Jesus,

  189. it's just as if

  190. we've been sprinkled

  191. with the blood of Jesus,

  192. a sign of God's

  193. eternal commitment,

  194. telling us time and time again,

  195. saying,

  196. I have died for you.

  197. You belong to me

  198. and I belong to you

  199. and I am your God

  200. and you will be my people.

  201. We have been set apart

  202. by the Spirit

  203. for obedience to Jesus

  204. and the sprinkling

  205. of his blood.

  206. You see,

  207. if we are Christians,

  208. we don't belong

  209. in this world.

  210. But the point is,

  211. we do belong

  212. to Jesus.

  213. We cannot get better

  214. or greater than that.

  215. If God has chosen you

  216. from before time began,

  217. if he has set you apart

  218. by his Holy Spirit,

  219. if he sent his Son

  220. to die for you,

  221. then you do belong.

  222. You are God's

  223. chosen people

  224. to live for him

  225. in this world.

  226. In a moment,

  227. we are all going to

  228. walk through

  229. that door.

  230. And if you are

  231. a follower of Jesus,

  232. you will walk out

  233. through there

  234. as an exile.

  235. It is like we will be

  236. scattered to different places.

  237. We will go to our places

  238. of work tomorrow morning.

  239. We will go into college

  240. or school.

  241. We will be mixing

  242. with our friends

  243. in our neighbourhoods.

  244. We will be going back

  245. home to our families.

  246. And it is not going

  247. to be easy.

  248. It will be hostile.

  249. It will be difficult.

  250. People will not always

  251. want to be your friend.

  252. They won't agree

  253. with what you have to say.

  254. They will shut you out

  255. and push you out.

  256. But our sense of identity

  257. is not shaped

  258. by this world.

  259. It is shaped

  260. by God.

  261. Remember,

  262. we are elect

  263. exiles.

  264. Yes,

  265. we are strangers

  266. in this world,

  267. but chosen

  268. by God

  269. to live for him.

  270. And as we go,

  271. let us go

  272. with this

  273. great promise.

  274. Look at the end

  275. of verse 2.

  276. Chapter 1,

  277. verse 2.

  278. Grace

  279. and peace

  280. be yours

  281. in abundance.

  282. As God's loved

  283. and treasured

  284. and chosen child,

  285. he will not leave you

  286. alone and isolated.

  287. He is not about

  288. to give up on you

  289. and say,

  290. just live this life

  291. on your own

  292. and get on with it.

  293. God will give you

  294. his peace

  295. and his grace

  296. in abundance.

  297. It's going to be

  298. like an overflowing

  299. fountain

  300. pouring down

  301. upon you

  302. on your life.

  303. What you need

  304. to live

  305. as a stranger

  306. in this world

  307. will be much

  308. more than you need.

  309. All the resources

  310. that you need

  311. to live for God

  312. will be poured

  313. out upon your life.

  314. In your weakness,

  315. you will have

  316. his grace.

  317. When you struggle

  318. to keep going

  319. as a Christian

  320. and the pressure

  321. seems too much

  322. and you just want

  323. to give in

  324. and give up

  325. and conform

  326. to everybody else,

  327. his grace

  328. will be sufficient

  329. for you.

  330. in fear,

  331. you will have

  332. his peace.

  333. When you worry

  334. about what people

  335. think of you,

  336. when what you believe

  337. costs you

  338. your friends,

  339. his peace

  340. will be your comfort.

  341. He will fill you.

  342. He will be with you.

  343. Do not let the world

  344. shape your identity.

  345. Live

  346. as the chosen

  347. people of God,

  348. loved by the Father

  349. in eternity past,

  350. set apart

  351. by the Holy Spirit

  352. to belong to him,

  353. belonging to Jesus,

  354. the one who died

  355. for you

  356. to give you meaning

  357. and purpose.

  358. So let's go

  359. with confidence.

  360. Let's go

  361. as God's

  362. elect

  363. exiles

  364. to serve him

  365. and to live

  366. for him

  367. in this hostile

  368. world.

  369. Let's pray

  370. together.

  371. Let's pray

  372. together.

  373. Father,

  374. we recognize

  375. that at times

  376. we do feel

  377. alone

  378. and we wonder

  379. where home

  380. actually is.

  381. We struggle
