  1. Well, in August 2014, Kevin Garrett, who we just mentioned, was arrested by local authorities and placed in detention.

  2. As a follower of Jesus, along with his wife Julia, they sought to serve the people of Asia, bringing practical aid and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with those that they met.

  3. On Thursday of this week, Kevin was released after nearly two years' imprisonment and reunited with his family.

  4. When I met Kevin a few years ago, he shared this verse about his work and ministry.

  5. It comes from Philippians.

  6. He put it up on a screen and he read,

  7. For it has been granted to you, on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also suffer for him.

  8. And Kevin then went on to explain that both he and his wife Julia knew that to serve Christ where they were would mean opposition and persecution.

  9. They understood clearly that to be a follower of Jesus Christ meant that in some way you will get hit.

  10. Now that's the big message of 1 Peter.

  11. Have a look at chapter 1, verse 1.

  12. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to God's elect, that is God's chosen people who belong to God,

  13. but are strangers in the world and have been scattered throughout.

  14. Peter is writing to believers who, on the one hand, belong to Jesus,

  15. but as a result of their belonging to Jesus, do not belong in this world.

  16. In fact, look at the end of verse 6 of chapter 1.

  17. They have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

  18. They have been misunderstood.

  19. They've been excluded.

  20. They've been accused wrongly.

  21. They've been abused and mocked.

  22. Because they love Jesus, opposition and persecution is their daily experience.

  23. Now, this is something we have to face up to ourselves.

  24. If we are followers of Jesus, this will be our experience.

  25. We might not have to leave our home or country.

  26. We might not suffer prison like Kevin.

  27. But to be a Christian means we will get hit.

  28. One writer put it like this.

  29. We have become outsiders, just as Jesus was an outsider.

  30. We are marginal in our culture because Jesus is marginal.

  31. The cross is the ultimate expression of marginalization.

  32. And to follow Jesus, to follow his example, is to experience marginalization and hostility.

  33. So the big question we want to ask ourselves today is, how do we live in this kind of culture?

  34. How do we survive in this kind of world?

  35. Well, rather than conform our beliefs to fit in or compromise our behavior to be accepted,

  36. we are to live our lives as God's children in this world.

  37. Two big things we're going to look at.

  38. Here's the first one.

  39. The commands to live as God's children.

  40. Look at verse 13.

  41. Therefore, so in view of the hostility we face, in view of the trials and the struggles,

  42. verse 13, prepare your minds for action, be self-controlled,

  43. set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

  44. That's the big command of verse 13.

  45. Set your hope.

  46. Be clear of your hope.

  47. You see, living life as a Christian now is going to be tough, but the future is glorious.

  48. So we set our hope on that grace that is to come.

  49. Now we've got to understand that hope in the Bible is not how we understand hope.

  50. I hope that Chelsea will win the league, or I hope that it's going to be dry tomorrow.

  51. Those things are uncertain and not guaranteed, especially if you're a Chelsea supporter.

  52. However, the hope that is to come, the grace that we are to receive,

  53. is absolutely guaranteed and totally assured.

  54. That's what hope in Scripture is.

  55. It is guaranteed.

  56. That's what he told us in verse 3.

  57. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  58. In his great mercy, he has given us new birth, this new beginning, a fresh start,

  59. into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

  60. and into an inheritance that can never perish, never spoil, never fade,

  61. and it's kept in heaven for you.

  62. Because Jesus rose from the grave, defeating our death, our future hope is guaranteed.

  63. Later today, Mayo are going to play Dublin in the All-Ireland Final.

  64. Now suppose Mayo knew they were going to win.

  65. Somehow, they just knew that victory was theirs.

  66. It was guaranteed.

  67. They would still have to go out and play and compete and tackle and score.

  68. But no matter the hits they take, no matter the intensity of the fight,

  69. even if they went behind in the score,

  70. they would keep on going because they knew victory was assured.

  71. Well, that's how it is for us.

  72. Our future is guaranteed.

  73. So as we live in this hostile world,

  74. no matter the hits that we take,

  75. no matter how fierce the battle,

  76. we can keep on going because our victory, our future, is sure.

  77. Now the danger is,

  78. and what can happen to us is this.

  79. We can take our eyes off our future hope.

  80. We can become overcome by the struggling and the trials and the difficulties as a Christian.

  81. And we can begin to drift and opt out.

  82. So he gives us this command,

  83. set your hope on the grace that is to come.

  84. How do we do that?

  85. Well, look at verse 13 again.

  86. Therefore, prepare your minds for action.

  87. Engage your thinking intentionally and deliberately.

  88. Start thinking about what God has promised us.

  89. Saturate your thoughts with the glory that is to come.

  90. In other words, we are to fill our minds with the truth of God's amazing promises.

  91. We are to prepare our minds, verse 13,

  92. and be self-controlled or some of the translations have it,

  93. be sober-minded.

  94. To be sober-minded means to be in control of your thinking.

  95. Rather than being influenced by the world around you,

  96. we are being influenced by what God has to say in his word.

  97. I watched a chick flick once.

  98. Only one of them.

  99. Fifty first dates, if you can remember it.

  100. I think I was there.

  101. I can't remember anyway.

  102. We'll not go there.

  103. Bad, bad, bad to go there.

  104. And in it, anyway, the story of it is,

  105. is a wife who has an accident and loses her memory.

  106. She can't remember who she is or those who love her.

  107. So every morning when she wakes up,

  108. she plays a video.

  109. And in the video, her husband speaks to her,

  110. reminding her of who he is,

  111. that he is her loving husband,

  112. and that she's got a wonderful daughter who she loves.

  113. And he explains all these things, all these truths to her.

  114. So as she begins each day,

  115. she's reminding herself of the truth of who she is,

  116. and she's able to live out her calling and her life as she should.

  117. Now that's what he's telling us here.

  118. Our minds are to be filled with the truth of God's word.

  119. We need to play the video of the gospel story over and over again to our minds.

  120. We need to tell it to us.

  121. We need to meditate upon it.

  122. We need to hear God say to us,

  123. You are my child.

  124. I have loved you and chosen you from before the creation of the world.

  125. I have died for you.

  126. I have given you an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.

  127. You have a glorious future.

  128. Set your hope on the grace that is to come.

  129. So that's the first command.

  130. Be clear of your hope.

  131. And the second one is this.

  132. Be holy like God.

  133. Look at verse 15.

  134. But just as he, that is God who called you, is holy,

  135. so be holy in all you do,

  136. for it is written,

  137. Be holy because I am holy.

  138. Now, holy in this context means to be separate and distinct.

  139. So if God is holy, that means God is set apart.

  140. God is different from everyone else and everything else.

  141. He's full of purity, full of beauty.

  142. There's no influence of evil and there's no hint of sin.

  143. Now, do you see what we're called to?

  144. If we are God's children, we are to become like God.

  145. In other words, we are to pursue a life of holiness.

  146. Verse 16.

  147. Be holy because I am holy.

  148. Now, in your Bibles, you'll see there's probably a little letter at the end of it

  149. and you'll see there that it's actually a quote from the book of Leviticus.

  150. Leviticus, that book in the Old Testament,

  151. one of the books that we usually tend to avoid because to us,

  152. well, it's a book full of strange laws that God gives to his people Israel.

  153. He's rescued them from slavery and then he gives them all these laws

  154. about what they can eat and what they can't wear,

  155. where they can go and what they can't do.

  156. And through all of these laws, God's people are being trained every single day.

  157. They're being reminded every single day that they were different.

  158. They now belong to God.

  159. So when they sat down to have their food, their breakfast or their lunch,

  160. when they got dressed in the morning and put on certain clothes,

  161. when they went out to work, the things they could touch and not touch,

  162. they couldn't get through any part of the day

  163. without this reminder that they were separate,

  164. that they were different, that they belonged to God.

  165. So as they went out amongst the nations,

  166. all this training would remind them that they were to behave as God's people.

  167. They were different.

  168. Now the same principle applies to us.

  169. We are God's people

  170. and we are to train ourselves to be holy.

  171. We are to be separate and distinct,

  172. not by the food we eat or the clothes we wear,

  173. but by our behaviour.

  174. Look at verse 14.

  175. As obedient children,

  176. as obedient children,

  177. do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance,

  178. but just as he who called you be holy,

  179. so be holy in all you do.

  180. We're to be different by our behaviour.

  181. When you watch a great match on television,

  182. like Dublin and Mayo this afternoon,

  183. you watch the skill of the players.

  184. They don't have to think about what to do.

  185. In the intensity of the battle on the pitch,

  186. it all becomes instinct.

  187. It's almost habit.

  188. It's habit.

  189. Because they've been putting in the hard training through the months and through the winter,

  190. they just perform.

  191. It's just natural.

  192. Now, in the same way,

  193. as we pursue a life of holiness,

  194. as we train ourselves to become like God,

  195. when the hostility comes,

  196. in the midst of the opposition and the fight on the pitch,

  197. as it were,

  198. we will obey.

  199. It will become our natural instinct.

  200. It will become our habit to obey Christ.

  201. Rather than conform to the standards of this world

  202. and fit in and live that way,

  203. our habit will be naturally to obey Christ.

  204. In other words,

  205. if we are not training ourselves in holiness,

  206. if we are not seeking to obey Christ,

  207. when the hostility comes,

  208. when the trial comes,

  209. we will conform.

  210. We'll buckle under the pressure.

  211. And we'll begin to modify our behaviour

  212. so that we do fit in.

  213. And we are accepted.

  214. So two very clear commands to God's children.

  215. Be clear of your hope.

  216. Get your minds in gear

  217. and remember what is to come.

  218. And the second command,

  219. be holy like God.

  220. Train yourself,

  221. discipline yourself

  222. to become holy like him

  223. so that you can stand strong

  224. in the heat of the battle.

  225. The second big idea is this,

  226. the motivation to live as God's children.

  227. You see,

  228. training to be holy,

  229. preparing our minds for action,

  230. sounds like hard work.

  231. And I hope we sense that.

  232. It is hard work.

  233. It's going to be tough.

  234. And because we're called to do this,

  235. we need the right kind of motivation

  236. to follow these laws,

  237. to follow these commands.

  238. So we have two motivations.

  239. Here's the first one.

  240. Our future judgment.

  241. Look at verse 17.

  242. Since you call on a father

  243. who judges each man's work impartially,

  244. live your lives as strangers here

  245. in reverent fear.

  246. Yes, God is our loving father

  247. who chose us before the creation of the world,

  248. who loves us deeply,

  249. is also our judge.

  250. He is our father

  251. who judges each person's work impartially,

  252. completely fairly.

  253. One day,

  254. every single one of us here

  255. will have to stand before the father

  256. and give an account for our lives.

  257. Everything that we've ever said,

  258. everything that we've ever done,

  259. everything that we've ever thought,

  260. our most public deeds

  261. and our most private acts

  262. will all be unveiled

  263. and laid out before the father.

  264. And we will have to give an account

  265. for our life.

  266. Why we did this

  267. and why we didn't do that.

  268. So because of God's coming judgment,

  269. look at the end of verse 17.

  270. Live your lives as strangers here

  271. in reverent fear.

  272. The fact that there's a future judgment

  273. should motivate us

  274. to live rightly today,

  275. to follow out the commands

  276. that he has given us.

  277. In Matthew 10,

  278. Jesus sends his disciples out into the world

  279. to be his witness.

  280. And as he does,

  281. he says this.

  282. He says to them,

  283. I am sending you out like sheep

  284. among wolves.

  285. That it's going to be dangerous.

  286. It's going to be hard.

  287. And then he said this.

  288. Do not be afraid of those

  289. who can kill the body,

  290. but cannot kill the soul.

  291. Rather be afraid or fear the one

  292. who can destroy both hell,

  293. both soul and body,

  294. in hell.

  295. You see,

  296. we fear what people think of us.

  297. We fear,

  298. what will people think of me

  299. if I say what I believe?

  300. We fear how people are going to treat us

  301. if we talk about our faith in Jesus.

  302. No,

  303. says Peter.

  304. Live your lives as strangers here

  305. in reverent fear.

  306. Don't be fearing the world.

  307. Don't be fearing people's opinions of you.

  308. It doesn't matter what people think of you.

  309. Rather,

  310. fear our Father

  311. who is judge.

  312. You see,

  313. being God's children

  314. does not give us this license

  315. to live as we please

  316. and think it doesn't matter.

  317. It does matter.

  318. God takes seriously

  319. that calling.

  320. He says,

  321. I've called you

  322. to be holy,

  323. to live different,

  324. to be my children

  325. in this world.

  326. So as children of the Father,

  327. we want to take that seriously.

  328. We want to please our Father.

  329. We want to do what's right

  330. as a demonstration

  331. of our love for Him.

  332. That we belong to Him.

  333. So be motivated

  334. by our future judgments.

  335. But also,

  336. as we look towards

  337. our future judgment,

  338. we should also look back

  339. to our past redemption.

  340. look at verse 18.

  341. For you know

  342. that it was not

  343. with perishable things

  344. such as silver or gold

  345. that you were redeemed

  346. from the empty way of life

  347. handed down to you

  348. from your forefathers,

  349. but with the precious blood

  350. of Christ,

  351. a lamb without blemish

  352. or defect,

  353. chosen

  354. before the creation

  355. of the world.

  356. Now that's referring back

  357. to a great event

  358. in the Old Testament.

  359. The Exodus.

  360. That great act

  361. of salvation

  362. when God

  363. redeemed

  364. His people

  365. from slavery

  366. in Egypt.

  367. God came

  368. and He rescued them

  369. from their cruel bondage

  370. to Pharaoh

  371. so that they could

  372. come out

  373. and belong to God

  374. and be His people.

  375. And central

  376. to that redemption

  377. was

  378. the blood

  379. of a lamb.

  380. Let's remind ourselves

  381. of that story.

  382. Keep your finger

  383. in 1 Peter

  384. and go back

  385. to Exodus chapter 12.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  386. The story here

  387. is what's called

  388. the Passover.

  389. Exodus chapter 12.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  390. So God

  391. has

  392. heard their cry.

  393. They're in slavery

  394. and He has come

  395. to rescue them.

  396. And at the heart

  397. of their rescue,

  398. the heart of their redemption

  399. was the blood

  400. of a lamb.

  401. Chapter 12

  402. verse 3.

  403. So God

  404. speaks to Moses

  405. and Moses speaks

  406. to the people.

  407. Verse 3.

  408. He says,

  409. Tell the whole community

  410. of Israel

  411. that on the tenth day

  412. of this month

  413. each man

  414. is to take a lamb

  415. for his family

  416. one for each household.

  417. So every family

  418. takes a lamb.

  419. Now read down

  420. at verse 5.

  421. The animals

  422. you choose

  423. must be year old males

  424. without defect,

  425. without blemish.

  426. And you may take them

  427. from sheep

  428. or the goats

  429. if they hadn't lambs.

  430. Take care of them

  431. until the 14th day

  432. of the month

  433. when all the people

  434. of the community

  435. of Israel

  436. must slaughter them

  437. at twilight.

  438. Then they are

  439. to take some

  440. of the blood

  441. and put it

  442. on the sides

  443. and the tops

  444. of the door frames

  445. of the houses

  446. where they eat

  447. the lambs.

  448. Now why would you

  449. go putting blood

  450. all over your front door?

  451. It seems rather gross

  452. to us in our age

  453. to think of getting

  454. a paintbrush out

  455. and slapping blood

  456. all over it.

  457. Well let's see

  458. the reason.

  459. Verse 12.

  460. On that same night

  461. God says

  462. I will pass

  463. through Egypt

  464. and strike down

  465. every firstborn

  466. both men

  467. and animals

  468. and I will bring

  469. judgment

  470. on all the gods

  471. of Egypt.

  472. I am the Lord.

  473. The blood

  474. that they've painted

  475. on the doors

  476. will be a sign

  477. for you

  478. on the houses

  479. where you are

  480. and when I see

  481. the blood

  482. that you've put

  483. on the doors

  484. I will pass

  485. over you

  486. and no destructive

  487. plague will touch

  488. you

  489. when I strike

  490. Egypt.

  491. Go back

  492. to 1 Peter.

  493. You see

  494. the people knew

  495. that they were

  496. just like

  497. in some sense

  498. the Egyptians.

  499. They were rebellious

  500. and sinful.

  501. They too

  502. deserved God's

  503. judgment

  504. but God

  505. in his grace

  506. provided a way.

  507. So we can picture

  508. the scene

  509. the father of the house

  510. takes the lamb

  511. and he slaughters

  512. the lamb

  513. he slits the lamb's throat

  514. and as he does so

  515. he's saying

  516. this lamb

  517. dies

  518. instead of me

  519. and my family.

  520. As the blood

  521. dripped onto the floor

  522. it was a reminder

  523. that the lamb

  524. loses its life

  525. so that they

  526. might have life.

  527. Judgment falls

  528. not on the people

  529. but on the lamb

  530. a substitute.

  531. Now says Peter

  532. take all that picture

  533. with us

  534. and come back

  535. to 1 Peter

  536. and verse 18

  537. and 19.

  538. This he says

  539. is what God

  540. has done for us

  541. in Christ.

  542. We are people

  543. who deserve

  544. judgment

  545. but Christ

  546. the ultimate lamb

  547. who was without sin

  548. without blemish

  549. without defect

  550. has died

  551. in our place.

  552. When Jesus

  553. went to the cross

  554. as the drip

  555. as the blood

  556. dripped to the ground

  557. he was giving

  558. his life for us

  559. so that we

  560. might have life.

  561. The judgment

  562. falls

  563. not on us

  564. but on Jesus

  565. the substitute.

  566. All of this

  567. means

  568. look at the end

  569. of verse 18

  570. this means

  571. that we have

  572. now been

  573. redeemed

  574. from the

  575. empty way

  576. of life

  577. handed down

  578. to you

  579. from your forefathers.

  580. As we were born

  581. into this world

  582. we were born

  583. with a sinful nature

  584. a heart

  585. that's rebellious

  586. to God

  587. and he's saying

  588. I've now rescued

  589. you from that

  590. from that empty

  591. way of living

  592. and I've given you

  593. a new way to live

  594. you've now become

  595. my children.

  596. You see

  597. when we face

  598. hostility

  599. in this world

  600. when we feel

  601. like outsiders

  602. when we are

  603. shut out

  604. because of our faith

  605. when we're

  606. misunderstood

  607. because of the

  608. stand we take

  609. when we're

  610. accused wrongly

  611. when we experience

  612. this opposition

  613. and persecution

  614. we will be

  615. tempted to look

  616. for an easier

  617. way

  618. but remember

  619. he says

  620. to give up

  621. and to go back

  622. is actually

  623. to go back

  624. into an empty

  625. way of life

  626. the acceptance

  627. that the world

  628. offers

  629. is empty

  630. it will never

  631. satisfy you

  632. the belonging

  633. that the world

  634. gives you

  635. is false

  636. there's nothing

  637. there for you

  638. it's going back

  639. into slavery

  640. it's going back

  641. under a harsh

  642. master again

  643. but Christ

  644. has freed you

  645. from that

  646. and given you

  647. a new life

  648. therefore

  649. verse 21

  650. through him

  651. you believe

  652. in God

  653. who raised him

  654. from the dead

  655. and glorified him

  656. and so your faith

  657. and hope

  658. are in God

  659. we've been rescued

  660. from an empty

  661. way of life

  662. so don't go back

  663. to it

  664. it will destroy

  665. you and kill

  666. you

  667. rather look

  668. to the life

  669. that Christ

  670. gives you

  671. which satisfies

  672. you and fulfills

  673. you

  674. and gives you

  675. that glorious

  676. inheritance

  677. so as we think

  678. about these

  679. commands

  680. that we are

  681. to live

  682. to set our

  683. hope

  684. on what is

  685. to come

  686. to be holy

  687. like God

  688. we need our

  689. motivation

  690. our future

  691. judgment

  692. and our

  693. past redemption

  694. it's a little

  695. bit like

  696. driving a car

  697. and I'll finish

  698. with this

  699. illustration

  700. you picture

  701. yourself

  702. driving on

  703. down the road

  704. as you're

  705. driving

  706. you're looking

  707. out the front

  708. you're looking

  709. through the screen

  710. to what's coming

  711. but at the same

  712. time you always

  713. have an eye

  714. on your little

  715. mirror to see

  716. what's happened

  717. behind

  718. or what's going

  719. on

  720. and if you

  721. keep looking

  722. out there

  723. and you keep

  724. looking back

  725. then you'll

  726. drive safely

  727. and it's

  728. going to go

  729. right

  730. now in the

  731. same way

  732. that is what

  733. we are to do

  734. as we journey

  735. on with

  736. the Lord

  737. we are to

  738. look towards

  739. our future

  740. judgments

  741. but we are to

  742. look back in the

  743. mirror to our

  744. past redemption

  745. we are to look

  746. back and remember

  747. all that Christ

  748. has done for us

  749. so that we can

  750. keep on going

  751. not in fear

  752. of the sense

  753. that he's never

  754. going to accept

  755. me but he will

  756. accept me

  757. because of

  758. Christ

  759. and because I

  760. will face him

  761. as judge

  762. I will seek

  763. to love him

  764. and please

  765. him

  766. so we have

  767. our focus

  768. on the future

  769. and on the

  770. past

  771. and that will

  772. give us the

  773. motivation

  774. to keep going

  775. forward

  776. as God's

  777. children

  778. let's pray

  779. together

  780. thanks

  781. to him

  782. and

  783. to be

  784. Thank you.
