  1. 12. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God,

  2. that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful

  3. light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not

  4. received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens

  5. and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires which war against your soul.

  6. Live such good lives among the pagans that though they accuse you of doing wrong, they

  7. may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

  8. Thank you. Well, please keep your Bibles open and we're going to pray and ask for God's

  9. help. Let's do that now.

  10. Father, you have given to us your word, the revelation of who you are, written down, recorded

  11. for us and in our own language today. So we thank you for your word, the Bible. And we

  12. thank you for your Holy Spirit. For the work he has done in our lives, opening our eyes, opening

  13. our hearts to see and understand, not just with our minds, but deeply with our hearts.

  14. And so we ask, Father God, that you would speak to us through your word, by your spirit, helping

  15. us to become the people you have called us to be. And that we would live our lives in this world

  16. as you have called us to live. Father, may each one of us here today be deeply affected by this word,

  17. that it would shape us, that it would challenge us, that it would remind us of our amazing salvation

  18. and the hope that you have given to us. So Father, thank you for your word, for your spirit.

  19. And we ask for your continued help to us now, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. I want to start by asking a couple of questions. No need to shout the answers out, but just think

  22. what the answers might be. Here's the first one. Did you come to church today?

  23. Are you in church right now?

  24. Where will the church be when you go home?

  25. In other words, what do you think church is?

  26. Well, for many, church is a building you go to, this structure that we're in right now.

  27. To other, it's a meeting that you attend on a Sunday morning, such as where we are right now.

  28. But as far as the Bible is concerned, that's not church.

  29. Have a look back at chapter 2, verse 4.

  30. This is what we saw last week.

  31. Chapter 2, verse 4.

  32. As you come to him, that is, as you come to Jesus, the living stone, that is, the foundation

  33. of our lives, rejected by men, but chosen by God and precious to him, you also are like

  34. living stones and are being built into a spiritual house.

  35. So, people who trust in Jesus, people who build their lives on the foundation of Jesus, are the church.

  36. As we come to Jesus in faith, we are being built together.

  37. Each one of us is like a stone being built into a living house where God lives by his Spirit.

  38. So, church is not a place to go to.

  39. It's not a meeting that we attend.

  40. Church is, if you see on the screen, church is God's chosen people, built together by Jesus,

  41. empowered by the Holy Spirit, and called to declare and display Christ to the world.

  42. That is amazing.

  43. That is who we are.

  44. God's chosen people, built together by Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit,

  45. and called to declare and display Christ to the world.

  46. Three things we are going to think about the church.

  47. First, our double identity as the church.

  48. Our double identity.

  49. First, our identity, number one, we belong to God.

  50. Look at verse 9.

  51. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.

  52. Now, we didn't always belong to God.

  53. Once upon a time, we were not a people.

  54. Look at verse 10.

  55. Once we were not a people.

  56. In the Old Testament, there's a prophet by the name of Hosea.

  57. We read from it this morning.

  58. And God spoke a very clear message to the people through Hosea, using his family.

  59. And Hosea had a son.

  60. And he called his son Lo-Ami.

  61. And Lo-Ami means, you're not my people, and I am not your God.

  62. So you could imagine Hosea, Lo-Ami is out running away outside, and Hosea calls him.

  63. You're not my people.

  64. I'm not your God.

  65. The message was clear to the people.

  66. Because of your rejection and your rebellion against God,

  67. because you've turned away from me and not loved me,

  68. you do not belong to me.

  69. You're not my people.

  70. And Peter, the author here, wants us to see our life like that.

  71. Because we too have ignored God.

  72. We are not God's people.

  73. We do not belong to him.

  74. But, let's read verse 10 again.

  75. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God.

  76. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

  77. Mercy is God not treating us as we deserve.

  78. In fact, God does the opposite towards us.

  79. In love he pursues unfaithful, rebellious people like you and me.

  80. And he makes us his people.

  81. Listen to those words again from Hosea.

  82. What God said to Hosea, to the people.

  83. Having said you are not my people, and I am not your God.

  84. Here's the promise.

  85. Listen to these words again.

  86. I will show my love to the one I called not my loved one.

  87. I will say to those called not my people, you are my people.

  88. And they will say, you are my God.

  89. And that wonderful promise was fulfilled when Jesus came and loved us and showed mercy to us.

  90. Jesus didn't treat us as we deserve.

  91. In fact, Jesus went to the cross to die for us so that people like you and me could become God's very own people.

  92. In fact, he goes on to tell us exactly who we are.

  93. Look at verse 9.

  94. We are God's chosen people.

  95. Or if you like, God's chosen race.

  96. Verse 9.

  97. But you are a chosen people.

  98. God has taken nobodies like you and me and made us into his chosen race.

  99. Loved from before time began.

  100. Gathered from all different kinds of backgrounds and nationalities.

  101. And created to be God's very own people.

  102. So if you are a Christian here today,

  103. you are not European or African or Asian or American.

  104. First and foremost, our identity is we are God's chosen race.

  105. But we're more than just that.

  106. Again, read verse 9.

  107. We are God's chosen people.

  108. A royal priesthood.

  109. Priests, you remember, were primarily responsible for making God known to the people.

  110. They spoke on behalf of God to the people.

  111. They were like a mediator from God to people.

  112. And now he's telling us, guess what?

  113. We're a priesthood.

  114. From once rejecting God to now people who represent God in the world.

  115. We're his royal priesthood.

  116. We have been chosen by the creator, the king of the universe,

  117. who rules over everyone and everything.

  118. And he has chosen us and he has sent us to represent God in the world.

  119. His living representatives.

  120. So that means we're not students, first and foremost.

  121. We're not workers.

  122. We're not unemployed.

  123. We're not sports players.

  124. We're not just mums at home looking after kids.

  125. We are a royal priesthood.

  126. God's representatives here on earth.

  127. A chosen people, a royal priesthood.

  128. And let's read verse 9 again.

  129. A holy nation.

  130. If you've done any kind of travelling,

  131. or surely if you've watched the shows on television,

  132. you know that every country you go to is different.

  133. Different food.

  134. Different culture.

  135. Different languages.

  136. Each nation is distinct from everyone else.

  137. And look at what we are.

  138. We are a holy nation.

  139. Holy means to be distinct.

  140. That is, we are different from everybody else.

  141. Not by the food we eat.

  142. Not by the clothes that we wear.

  143. But by our words of truth.

  144. By our loving behaviour.

  145. Together, corporately, as his people,

  146. we are to declare and display the beauty

  147. and the goodness of God in the world in which we live.

  148. So you see, it's not just about me

  149. and my relationship with God

  150. and my personal experience with God.

  151. It's not about me and God all on our own.

  152. We're much bigger and greater than that.

  153. We are a holy nation.

  154. So I don't know how you came thinking of yourself today.

  155. Maybe feeling a little bit down and miserable.

  156. Thinking that you're not worth very much.

  157. And people don't pay you much attention.

  158. Well, look again at your identity

  159. if you are trusting Christ.

  160. You belong to God.

  161. You have been shown mercy.

  162. You are a chosen race.

  163. A royal priesthood.

  164. And a holy nation.

  165. But that's not how the world will see God's people.

  166. So here's our second identity.

  167. And this should be familiar to us

  168. as we've gone through 1 Peter.

  169. We are strangers in the world.

  170. Verse 11.

  171. Dear friends, I urge you as aliens

  172. and strangers in the world.

  173. In the eyes of God,

  174. we are royal.

  175. We are special.

  176. We are holy.

  177. We are treasured.

  178. But in the eyes of the world,

  179. we're nobodies.

  180. Outsiders.

  181. Shut out.

  182. Pushed out.

  183. We're strangers.

  184. Have a look back at chapter 1, verse 1.

  185. Remember how he set out this identity

  186. at the very beginning of the letter?

  187. To God's elect.

  188. God's, yes, you're chosen people,

  189. loved by God,

  190. but you are strangers

  191. in the world.

  192. If we belong to God,

  193. that means we do not belong to the world.

  194. We cannot belong to two things at once.

  195. We either belong to God

  196. or we belong to the world.

  197. One writer put it like this.

  198. Christians,

  199. if you're living in the world

  200. as a Christian today,

  201. he says Christians are like immigrants,

  202. foreigners,

  203. temporary residents,

  204. like refugees.

  205. We do not belong.

  206. We do not have the rights of citizens.

  207. We're outsiders.

  208. We're living on the edge

  209. of the culture.

  210. Yes, we are a chosen race,

  211. but in the world

  212. we are an unwelcome race.

  213. Yes, we're a royal priesthood,

  214. but in the world

  215. we're an unwanted priesthood.

  216. Yes, we are a holy nation,

  217. but in the world

  218. we're an undesirable nation.

  219. Don't believe me?

  220. Well, if you are a Christian today,

  221. if you speak up for the rights

  222. of the unborn,

  223. if you stand and say,

  224. I am pro-life,

  225. and if you stand up for Christian values

  226. and for truth,

  227. you will feel a sense of isolation.

  228. You will be pushed out.

  229. You will feel a stranger

  230. in the world.

  231. So you see,

  232. we do live with this double identity.

  233. We belong to God,

  234. but we're strangers.

  235. The second thing about church

  236. is this,

  237. our double calling.

  238. And here's our first calling.

  239. We have been called out of the world.

  240. Let's read verse 9 again.

  241. You are a chosen people,

  242. a royal priesthood,

  243. a holy nation,

  244. a people belonging to God,

  245. that you may declare

  246. the praises of him

  247. who did what?

  248. Who called you out

  249. of darkness.

  250. Darkness

  251. is a description of life

  252. that is under the influence

  253. of the world.

  254. It's a life

  255. without Jesus,

  256. where we are trapped

  257. and enslaved,

  258. without hope,

  259. without purpose.

  260. So the world

  261. will tell us

  262. things like this.

  263. We've come from nowhere,

  264. and guess what?

  265. We're going nowhere.

  266. We are born,

  267. that's if we escape

  268. abortion.

  269. We die naturally,

  270. if we escape

  271. euthanasia.

  272. It's a life

  273. that gives

  274. no hope

  275. beyond the grave,

  276. no purpose

  277. to our present existence.

  278. It's a life

  279. that is utterly

  280. dark and empty.

  281. But the good news is,

  282. Jesus,

  283. verse 9,

  284. has called us

  285. out

  286. from darkness

  287. into

  288. his wonderful light.

  289. You see,

  290. as we come

  291. to Jesus,

  292. we discover

  293. we do have

  294. a purpose.

  295. We are loved

  296. and we are chosen

  297. before

  298. we were ever born.

  299. Through Jesus,

  300. we discover

  301. we do have a hope.

  302. When we die,

  303. we've got an inheritance

  304. that can never perish,

  305. spoil or fade.

  306. Jesus has called us

  307. out

  308. from the darkness

  309. of this world

  310. into

  311. his wonderful light.

  312. Have a look back

  313. at chapter 1,

  314. verse 18.

  315. Chapter 1,

  316. verse 18.

  317. For you know

  318. that it was not

  319. with perishable things

  320. such as silver

  321. or gold

  322. that you were

  323. redeemed

  324. from the

  325. empty

  326. way

  327. of life.

  328. That's the darkness,

  329. the empty way

  330. of life.

  331. We've been

  332. redeemed from it.

  333. We have been

  334. redeemed,

  335. verse 19,

  336. with the precious

  337. blood of Christ,

  338. the Lamb,

  339. without blemish

  340. or defect.

  341. Christ,

  342. the perfect one,

  343. has rescued us

  344. from the empty

  345. darkness

  346. and has brought us

  347. into his

  348. beautiful light,

  349. bringing meaning

  350. and purpose

  351. and filling

  352. our lives

  353. with hope.

  354. But that's just

  355. one side

  356. of our calling.

  357. We've been

  358. called out

  359. of the world

  360. but we have

  361. also been

  362. sent back

  363. into

  364. the world.

  365. Look at

  366. verse 11.

  367. Dear friends,

  368. I urge you

  369. as aliens

  370. and strangers,

  371. whereabouts

  372. are they?

  373. In

  374. the world.

  375. Living life

  376. as a Christian

  377. in this world

  378. is tough.

  379. It is hard.

  380. To speak out

  381. for Christian truth,

  382. to stand up

  383. for Christian values,

  384. means we will

  385. not always be

  386. liked.

  387. And in an effort

  388. to try and

  389. protect ourselves,

  390. what we do

  391. is we retreat

  392. into our nice,

  393. safe,

  394. Christian ghetto.

  395. We surround

  396. ourselves with

  397. people who

  398. believe the

  399. same things

  400. and think

  401. the same way.

  402. We hide

  403. behind the

  404. comfort of

  405. our own

  406. Christian faith,

  407. surrounding

  408. ourselves with

  409. Christian friends.

  410. We live in

  411. the world

  412. of Christian

  413. Facebook

  414. where we

  415. like Christian

  416. friends but

  417. unlike those

  418. who do not

  419. believe.

  420. And we

  421. just live

  422. in our own

  423. little bubble.

  424. But that's

  425. wrong.

  426. That's wrong.

  427. The point is

  428. there is nothing

  429. private about

  430. our Christian

  431. faith.

  432. Look at

  433. verse 12.

  434. Live such

  435. good lives

  436. among

  437. the pagans,

  438. around about

  439. with the

  440. people who

  441. do not

  442. yet believe.

  443. Live your

  444. life amongst

  445. them.

  446. Work there.

  447. Live there.

  448. Play there.

  449. Jesus has

  450. rescued us

  451. from the

  452. world and

  453. now he

  454. sends us

  455. back into

  456. the world.

  457. We are

  458. the light

  459. that goes

  460. into the

  461. darkness.

  462. You see,

  463. through Jesus

  464. we have been

  465. changed and

  466. transformed and

  467. we are to

  468. bring that

  469. hope with

  470. us back

  471. to the

  472. world.

  473. Have a look

  474. with me,

  475. please.

  476. Keep your

  477. finger in

  478. 1 Peter and

  479. just go back

  480. to Matthew's

  481. Gospel.

  482. Gospel.

  483. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  484. chapter 5.

  485. It's on

  486. page 968.

  487. 968.

  488. Remember what

  489. Jesus said to

  490. his disciples?

  491. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  492. chapter 5.

  493. Sorry,

  494. it's 969.

  495. We're going to

  496. read from

  497. verse 14.

  498. Matthew 5

    Matthew 5:14

  499. verse 14.

  500. What does

  501. he say of

  502. the church,

  503. his people?

  504. You are

  505. the light

  506. of the

  507. world.

  508. We're like

  509. a city

  510. on a hill

  511. that cannot

  512. be hidden.

  513. Our light

  514. is shining

  515. for all

  516. to see.

  517. Neither

  518. do people

  519. light a

  520. lamp and

  521. put it

  522. under a

  523. bowl.

  524. That's

  525. kind of

  526. to retreat

  527. into our

  528. own safe

  529. Christian

  530. ghetto.

  531. Instead,

  532. they put

  533. it on

  534. its stand

  535. and it

  536. gives light

  537. to everyone

  538. in the

  539. house.

  540. In other

  541. words,

  542. we are

  543. to live

  544. our lives

  545. out in

  546. the world.

  547. In the

  548. same way,

  549. verse 16,

  550. let your

  551. light shine

  552. before men

  553. and women

  554. that they

  555. may see

  556. your good

  557. deeds

  558. and praise

  559. your Father

  560. in heaven.

  561. we have

  562. been rescued

  563. from the

  564. world of

  565. darkness.

  566. Now we

  567. are sent

  568. back into

  569. the world

  570. as his

  571. lights to

  572. shatter the

  573. darkness,

  574. to bring

  575. hope and

  576. to bring

  577. life.

  578. So,

  579. our double

  580. identity,

  581. we belong

  582. to God,

  583. but yet we're

  584. strangers in

  585. this world.

  586. Our double

  587. calling,

  588. we've been

  589. rescued out

  590. of the

  591. world and

  592. now we

  593. have been

  594. sent back

  595. into the

  596. world.

  597. And third,

  598. our double

  599. mission.

  600. First,

  601. we are to

  602. declare Jesus

  603. through our

  604. words to

  605. the world.

  606. Declare

  607. Jesus through

  608. our words to

  609. the world.

  610. Look at

  611. verse 9.

  612. You're a

  613. chosen people,

  614. a royal

  615. priesthood,

  616. a holy

  617. nation,

  618. a people

  619. belonging to

  620. God.

  621. You've got a

  622. purpose,

  623. you've got a

  624. mission,

  625. you have been

  626. chosen by

  627. God to do

  628. what?

  629. Look at the

  630. end of verse

  631. 9.

  632. That you

  633. may declare

  634. the praises

  635. of him who

  636. called you

  637. out of

  638. darkness and

  639. into his

  640. wonderful

  641. light.

  642. The story

  643. of our

  644. new identity

  645. and our

  646. new calling

  647. is an

  648. amazing story

  649. to tell.

  650. We are,

  651. verse 9,

  652. to declare

  653. the praises

  654. of him.

  655. We are to

  656. point to

  657. Jesus.

  658. We are to

  659. point to

  660. God and

  661. tell and

  662. show people

  663. the incredible

  664. and amazing

  665. life-changing

  666. work that

  667. God has

  668. done in

  669. our lives

  670. and can be

  671. done in

  672. your life.

  673. To tell

  674. the story

  675. of how

  676. God has

  677. loved us

  678. and chosen

  679. us and

  680. made us

  681. his royal

  682. priesthood.

  683. How he's

  684. taken

  685. nobodies

  686. like you

  687. and me,

  688. rebels

  689. living in

  690. the emptiness

  691. of this

  692. dark world

  693. and made

  694. us his

  695. holy nation.

  696. How he

  697. has given

  698. us a

  699. living hope

  700. and inheritance

  701. that can

  702. never perish,

  703. spoil or fade.

  704. We are here

  705. to tell the

  706. story of

  707. how God

  708. rescues us

  709. from darkness

  710. and brings

  711. us into

  712. his wonderful

  713. light.

  714. I've heard

  715. a phrase,

  716. maybe you've

  717. heard this

  718. too.

  719. People often

  720. quote it.

  721. Always

  722. preach the

  723. gospel and

  724. if necessary

  725. use words.

  726. Always

  727. preach the

  728. gospel and

  729. if necessary

  730. use words.

  731. Well,

  732. whoever said

  733. it,

  734. is wrong

  735. because the

  736. good news

  737. about Jesus

  738. is a

  739. word.

  740. We need

  741. to use

  742. our words.

  743. We are

  744. to declare

  745. the truth

  746. about God

  747. because it

  748. is his

  749. word,

  750. the word

  751. of God

  752. that changes

  753. lives.

  754. Look back

  755. at chapter

  756. 1 verse

  757. 23.

  758. Chapter

  759. 1 verse

  760. 23.

  761. He tells

  762. us that we

  763. have been

  764. born again.

  765. This is

  766. this new

  767. life,

  768. this new

  769. hope,

  770. this new

  771. beginning.

  772. We have

  773. been born

  774. again,

  775. not of

  776. perishable

  777. seed,

  778. but of

  779. imperishable.

  780. How?

  781. Through the

  782. living and

  783. enduring

  784. word of

  785. God.

  786. You see,

  787. when the

  788. word of

  789. God,

  790. the good

  791. news about

  792. Jesus,

  793. is told

  794. and declared,

  795. God by

  796. his spirit

  797. changes lives

  798. and transforms

  799. lives.

  800. Ephesians

  801. number 16.

  802. Now,

  803. I know

  804. that's

  805. hard because

  806. I find

  807. it hard.

  808. It's hard

  809. to talk

  810. about

  811. Jesus when

  812. people don't

  813. want to

  814. listen.

  815. That's

  816. why on

  817. Wednesdays,

  818. as our

  819. study together,

  820. we're looking

  821. at how to

  822. talk about

  823. Jesus even

  824. when it's

  825. tough.

  826. Because it

  827. is tough.

  828. and together we're sharing with each other,

  829. we're learning together,

  830. we're encouraging each other to talk about Jesus.

  831. And it's been exciting to hear the stories of people

  832. as they've come on a Wednesday

  833. and tell us how they've gotten on in work,

  834. how they got on with this friend

  835. and how people are declaring the story of Jesus.

  836. So, declare Jesus through our words.

  837. And display Jesus through our lives to the world.

  838. That's the second part of our mission.

  839. Look at verse 12, chapter 2, verse 12.

  840. Live such good lives among those who are not yet believers

  841. that though they accuse you of doing wrong,

  842. they may see your good deeds

  843. and glorify God on the day he visits us.

  844. Words are necessary,

  845. but our lives must match what we talk about.

  846. Let me put it this way.

  847. People need to see the gospel

  848. as well as hear the gospel.

  849. We say, God is love.

  850. Well then let's love the refugee who is isolated and alone.

  851. You say, Jesus forgives?

  852. Well then don't hold any grudges

  853. and forgive your brother and sister.

  854. Again.

  855. You say, God gave his life?

  856. Then give your life sacrificially for the service of others.

  857. You say, Jesus accepts us?

  858. Then welcome others and don't condemn them.

  859. If we're wanting people to hear the good news of Jesus,

  860. then our very lives must reflect and display the beauty of Jesus

  861. to those around us.

  862. People are much more likely going to listen

  863. and they're going to ask questions

  864. if our life looks like the message that we're seeking to tell.

  865. That's why, verse 11,

  866. he says,

  867. I urge you, dear friends,

  868. I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world

  869. to abstain from sinful desires

  870. which war against your soul.

  871. Sinful natures.

  872. It makes us selfish.

  873. It puts barriers between us and people.

  874. And if it's not dealt with,

  875. it will turn people away from Jesus.

  876. Our behaviour in public,

  877. our ways in private,

  878. have an effect on people.

  879. Rather than display the beauty of Jesus,

  880. we'll just display the ugliness of our hearts.

  881. That is why there is a battle going on.

  882. A war in our souls

  883. to fight against our sinful nature

  884. so that we display the beauty of Jesus

  885. to the world.

  886. In the first century,

  887. just after this letter was written,

  888. it was really tough to be a Christian.

  889. It was illegal to be a Christian.

  890. Ordinary believers,

  891. just like you and me,

  892. put yourself back into the first century,

  893. didn't have a Bible,

  894. didn't have one of these that you have in your lap.

  895. Most people couldn't read.

  896. There were a few letters that Paul had

  897. and bits of scripture that others had

  898. that were passed around.

  899. They didn't have church buildings to go to,

  900. not even a grand sports hall like this.

  901. No worship groups.

  902. No projectors.

  903. No Christianity Explored courses.

  904. No tracts or booklets to give to people.

  905. They just had people like you and me

  906. meeting together,

  907. gathering together,

  908. living their lives together.

  909. And amazingly,

  910. the church grew

  911. and people became followers of Jesus.

  912. How did that happen with such few resources?

  913. People,

  914. the Word of God

  915. and the Spirit of God

  916. working together?

  917. How did it all happen?

  918. Well, they got their new identity,

  919. that they were God's loved and chosen people.

  920. They understood their new calling,

  921. that they were sent into the world

  922. as God's royal priesthood.

  923. They were a holy nation.

  924. God's representatives.

  925. And they understood their new mission

  926. as they went about.

  927. They talked about Jesus

  928. and their lives reflected Jesus

  929. as they loved people

  930. and cared for people.

  931. It seems so simple,

  932. doesn't it?

  933. And the reality is,

  934. we can all do that too.

  935. And what encourages me,

  936. and I guess it encourages you too,

  937. is that many people here

  938. are doing this already together.

  939. to hear your stories

  940. of how you go about

  941. your day-to-day lives

  942. when you go into college,

  943. when you're going into work,

  944. to hear of mums

  945. who are telling the story

  946. of Christ to their children,

  947. of making the effort

  948. to put yourself into

  949. a tough place

  950. where you talk about Jesus.

  951. And as you go about your lives

  952. loving your neighbours,

  953. loving your friends,

  954. even when they don't even recognise it,

  955. even when they slag you off,

  956. even when things go wrong,

  957. you're doing it.

  958. And so our encouragement together is,

  959. rather than run away

  960. and hide into our safe Christian ghetto

  961. and into that nice little cosy bubble

  962. where we surround our friends

  963. with our nice worship songs

  964. and our nice readings

  965. and our nice Christian friends,

  966. we just go out into the darkness.

  967. We are the light of God,

  968. shattering the darkness,

  969. bringing the hope,

  970. bringing the life.

  971. And when we live like this,

  972. look at the end of verse 12,

  973. they will see your good deeds

  974. and glorify God

  975. on the day he visits us.

  976. You know what?

  977. You mightn't see huge changes now,

  978. but there's a promise

  979. and take it away with you

  980. that on the day Christ returns

  981. because of your mission,

  982. because of your declaring of Christ,

  983. because of your displaying of Christ,

  984. there will be people

  985. that you would have impacted

  986. and they will be glorifying Christ with you

  987. and they will share

  988. in that eternal inheritance

  989. forever and forever.

  990. We're not ordinary people.

  991. We're a royal priesthood

  992. filled with the power of God's Holy Spirit

  993. sent to declare and display Christ

  994. to the world.

  995. May God give us grace

  996. to be his chosen people.

  997. Let's pray.

  998. Amen.

  999. Amen.

  1000. Amen.

  1001. Amen.

1002. Father, would you please help us

  1003. to, as it were,

1004. block out the voices of the world

  1005. that tell us

  1006. that we're nobodies,

  1007. that we have nothing,

  1008. that we are nothing.

1009. Help us to listen to the clear,

  1010. crystal voice of God

  1011. to be reminded again

  1012. of our identity,

1013. that we are God's chosen people,

  1014. his holy nation,

  1015. rescued from the emptiness

  1016. and darkness,

1017. called into his beautiful light,

  1018. given hope,

  1019. given meaning,

  1020. given purpose.

  1021. Help us.

1022. Fill us with your Spirit

  1023. that we, this week,

  1024. may declare your truth.

1025. And that we would so fight

1026. the sin in our lives

  1027. that we would display

  1028. the beauty of Christ

  1029. from our lives.

  1030. And we pray this,

  1031. that people,

  1032. our friends,

  1033. our family,

  1034. our loved ones,

  1035. will glorify Christ,

  1036. will love him

  1037. and worship him

  1038. the day Christ returns.

  1039. Father, do your work,

  1040. we pray.

  1041. In Jesus' name.

  1042. Amen.

1043. We're going to sing together.

  1044. Father,

1045. you're the word of God the Father,

  1046. which tells the story

  1047. of God's amazing love

  1048. who reached down

  1049. into our world.

  1050. He didn't stay away

  1051. from the world.

1052. He came into the world,

  1053. into the darkness,

  1054. to be light.

  1055. Nope
