  1. Our reading today is in 1 Peter chapter 3, verse 8 to 22.

    1 Peter 3:8–22

  2. In the Church Red Bible, it's page 1219.

  3. Okay, I hope you find the verse.

  4. 1 Peter chapter 1, verse 3, chapter 3, verse 8 to 22.

    1 Peter 1:3

  5. Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another.

  6. Be sympathetic.

  7. Love as brothers.

  8. Be compassionate and humble.

  9. Do not repay evil with evil, or insult with insult, but with blessing.

  10. Because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

  11. It's going to harm you if you are eager to do good.

  12. But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.

  13. Do not fear what they fear.

  14. Do not be frightened.

  15. But in your heart, set apart Christ as Lord.

  16. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

  17. But do this with gentleness and respect.

  18. Keep a clear conscience so that those who speak maliciously against you, against your good behavior in Christ, may be ashamed for their slander.

  19. It is better if it is God's will to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

  20. For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous.

  21. To bring you to God, he must put to death in the body, but made alive by the Spirit.

  22. Through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.

  23. In it, only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water.

  24. And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also.

  25. Not the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of good conscience towards God.

  26. He saves you by the resurrection of Christ Jesus, who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand with angels, authorities, and powers in submission to him.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Thanks very much, Kevin.

  30. We'll keep your Bible open there at 1 Peter 3.

  31. Before we start, I just want to say that it's a longer passage than we've normally been dealing with on a Sunday morning.

  32. So we're not going to cover everything.

  33. So there may be questions that arise, things that weren't covered, or you just want to come back on.

  34. Please feel free to talk with me afterwards.

  35. Let's pray.

  36. Father, thank you for your word.

  37. Thank you for this letter written all these hundreds of years ago to a people belonging to you, yet scattered, feeling alone, isolated, struggling.

  38. And Father, so we identify as people who belong to you, struggling to fit in this world and knowing how to live.

  39. And so we ask that as we look at your word today, it would equip us and encourage us to be faithful witnesses in our communities, in our work, in our schools, wherever we are during the week.

  40. That we would be a faithful witness, pointing to you through what we say and in how we live.

  41. We ask for your spirit's help to us all today, in Jesus' name.

  42. Amen.

  43. Well, I want to introduce you to Pastor Alim.

  44. Alim lives in the city of Aleppo in Syria, which you know from watching the television has been turned into a pile of rubble following constant bombing and shelling.

  45. While mothers have left, Alim remains to care for the church.

  46. He explains,

  47. The other day as we finished our meeting on Friday, a bomb exploded next to the church, killing a young girl and her brother.

  48. On Sunday, when we were getting ready for church, bombs exploded around our house.

  49. But I feel a calling from God.

  50. He wants me to be here till the end, as long as there is work to do in Aleppo.

  51. Part of that work has been to provide food and basic needs for up to 2,000 people in their community, half of whom are from the Muslim background.

  52. In the face of severe opposition and persecution, they bless others.

  53. They pray for them, they care for them, they speak of the certain hope that they have in Christ.

  54. And many who saw that church as the enemy have now found a warmth and a welcome.

  55. And as a result, in that bombed city, people are turning to Christ and are being baptised.

  56. Alim is seeking to be a faithful witness in what is a hostile world.

  57. Now that is the big message of 1 Peter.

  58. As we stand up for Christian values, as we speak out for Christian truth, we will get hit.

  59. We mightn't live in Aleppo, we mightn't face being bombed, but if we are followers of Christ, we will face opposition.

  60. Look at verse 9.

  61. You will suffer insult.

  62. Verse 14.

  63. You will face their threats and you will be frightened.

  64. Verse 16.

  65. There will be those who will speak maliciously against you.

  66. The reality is, if you are a follower of Jesus, you will get hit.

  67. So, how do we live in this world that is hostile to Christ and to his church?

  68. Well, look at verse 8.

  69. Finally, all of you, it's as if he's bringing to conclusion what he has been talking about all the way from chapter 2, verse 12.

  70. Having shown us what it is like to be a faithful witness in society, in chapter 2.

  71. What it's like to be a faithful witness in our work, chapter 2, verse 18.

  72. What it's like to be a faithful witness within the home, chapter 3.

  73. He now shows us that this is the calling for all of God's people.

  74. Verse 8.

  75. Finally, all of you, whatever circumstance of life we find ourselves in, all of you, live in harmony with one another.

  76. Be sympathetic.

  77. Love as brothers.

  78. Be compassionate and humble.

  79. If people who are against Christ are going to turn to Christ, we need to respond by being faithful in our witness.

  80. So, what's that going to look like for you and for me?

  81. Well, first, we are to bless those who stand opposed to us.

  82. Bless those who stand opposed to you.

  83. Look at verse 9.

  84. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called.

  85. If we're followers of Jesus, we are to bless those who would stand opposed to us.

  86. Why?

  87. Well, look at the rest of verse 9.

  88. So that you may inherit a blessing.

  89. Now, we need to be clear what that is.

  90. This is not tip for tap.

  91. This is not, I bless you and God is going to bless me in return.

  92. So, if I bless five people, then God is going to bless me five times.

  93. No, we have already been given a blessing.

  94. We have already received an inheritance.

  95. Have a look back at chapter 1, verse 3.

  96. Chapter 1, verse 3.

  97. Just starting into the verse.

  98. You see what it says?

  99. In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

  100. and into an inheritance, a blessing that can never perish, spoil or fade, which is kept in heaven for you.

  101. So, we have an inheritance that is guaranteed.

  102. So, our blessing of other people is a sign that we have already inherited a blessing from God.

  103. So, in response to this undeserved blessing of this inheritance that will never perish, spoil or fade,

  104. the response to that or the sign that we have that is in turn to bless other people.

  105. That's what chapter 3, verse 9 is saying to us.

  106. You see, it's so natural to retaliate and want revenge.

  107. A colleague at work makes fun of you with a snide comment.

  108. You want to retaliate.

  109. A friend speaks aggressively against what you believe and you want revenge.

  110. You get hurt, so you want them to hurt.

  111. You suffer, so you want them to suffer.

  112. But not so for the Christian.

  113. Because we are blessed.

  114. Because we have an inheritance, we in turn bless those who stand opposed to us.

  115. We are to be a blessing.

  116. We are given an example of what this looks like in verses 10 to 12.

  117. This is a quote from Psalm 34.

  118. Now, Psalm 34, you can read it all at home, is at a time when Saul is king.

  119. Saul was the people's choice.

  120. David, who was God's choice as king, is being pursued by Saul.

  121. He's being chased down by Saul.

  122. And David's life is in danger.

  123. But how does David respond to this threat?

  124. Well, look at verse 10.

  125. For whoever would love life and see good days,

  126. so whoever has the blessing and has that inheritance to come,

  127. must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.

  128. He must turn from evil and do good.

  129. He must seek peace and pursue it.

  130. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

  131. and his ears are attentive to their prayer.

  132. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

  133. You see, in the face of extreme opposition,

  134. David sought to bless rather than repay or take revenge.

  135. So a colleague speaks against you,

  136. slanders your name,

  137. spreads a nasty rumour for no other reason than they find your Christian values irritating.

  138. But don't gossip.

  139. Don't look for the next opportunity to belittle them.

  140. Look at verse 10.

  141. You must keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech.

  142. You take a stand for Christian values.

  143. You speak up for the right of the unborn.

  144. You take a stand not to cover for your boss or to tell lies.

  145. And as a result, well, you lose out on promotion.

  146. You get all the rotten jobs to do.

  147. But don't fight back.

  148. Don't plot how you can take revenge.

  149. Instead, verse 11,

  150. We must turn from evil and do good.

  151. We must seek peace and pursue it.

  152. You see, it's not our job to get back at others.

  153. It's not our place to retaliate and seek revenge.

  154. It is our role to bless.

  155. It's to do good to those who hurt you.

  156. Have you been hurt by someone else?

  157. Bless them.

  158. We are to speak kindly to those who malign you.

  159. Have you ever felt ostracized or pushed away by somebody else?

  160. Speak kindly to them.

  161. Of course it's hard.

  162. Of course it's tough.

  163. But like David, we pray and we leave things with God.

  164. Verse 12,

  165. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

  166. and his ears are attentive to their prayer.

  167. We can hear David praying in the midst as he's being pursued by Saul,

  168. crying out to God for help,

  169. that he might bless rather than retaliate.

  170. For the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

  171. We have been incredibly blessed.

  172. We have an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.

  173. So do not repay evil with evil,

  174. or insult with insult,

  175. but with blessing.

  176. So first,

  177. bless those who oppose you.

  178. Second,

  179. speak hope to those who threaten you.

  180. Verse 13,

  181. Who's going to harm you if you are eager to do good?

  182. But even if you should suffer for what is right,

  183. you are blessed.

  184. Do not fear what they fear.

  185. Do not be frightened.

  186. Now I don't know about you,

  187. but I suspect it's true.

  188. I get frightened all the time as a Christian.

  189. I fear that if I speak out for Jesus,

  190. if I stand for what the Bible teaches,

  191. I really fear I'm going to lose some of my friends.

  192. I fear that people will think I'm weird.

  193. They probably think I'm weird anyway,

  194. but they might just think I'm a bit more weird.

  195. I fear that I'll be talked about.

  196. You might fear that if you associate with Christians,

  197. you'll be insulted and laughed at.

  198. And so for an easier and more comfortable life,

  199. we just put the head down and keep quiet

  200. and hope that nobody sees or nobody asks.

  201. But, what does it say in verse 14?

  202. Do not fear what they fear.

  203. Do not be frightened.

  204. Literally, it's saying to us,

  205. do not fear their threats.

  206. Don't be intimidated by what people might say to you

  207. or what they might do to you.

  208. Well, you say, that's easier said than done.

  209. That's easy to read.

  210. The theory is fine.

  211. Don't fear.

  212. But we all fear what people think about us.

  213. But genuinely, really, there is no need to fear.

  214. The reason, look at verse 14 again,

  215. even if you should suffer for what is right,

  216. you are blessed.

  217. It's the reminder again that if we are Christians,

  218. if we're followers of Jesus,

  219. we are blessed.

  220. Let's go back to chapter 1, verse 4 again.

  221. Let's remind ourselves of that blessing,

  222. that inheritance.

  223. Verse 4.

  224. Because of the resurrection

  225. and our faith in Christ,

  226. verse 4,

  227. we have an inheritance that can never perish,

  228. spoil or fade,

  229. kept in heaven for you.

  230. But there's more.

  231. Verse 5.

  232. Who through faith are shielded by God's power

  233. until the coming of salvation

  234. that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

  235. The blessing that we have received

  236. is that heaven is kept for us

  237. and we are kept for heaven.

  238. Nothing can take us from our inheritance

  239. and no one can take our inheritance from us.

  240. So, people can say what they like.

  241. People can think what they like.

  242. They can do whatever they want to us

  243. because we will always be blessed

  244. and that inheritance and that blessing

  245. cannot be taken away.

  246. It's this blessing

  247. that keeps Pastor Alim in Aleppo.

  248. It's what keeps many

  249. travelling into North Korea.

  250. It's what keeps thousands of Christians

  251. talking about Jesus

  252. even when it's not safe.

  253. Yes, people can be imprisoned.

  254. At worst, their lives can be taken

  255. and it does happen.

  256. But even if someone should lose their life for Christ

  257. it will mean that they receive

  258. their promised inheritance.

  259. So, people can say what they like

  260. do what they like

  261. because we will always be blessed

  262. and it's because of this inheritance

  263. because of this blessing that we have

  264. that we too do not need to fear the threats.

  265. We do not need to fear what people think of you

  266. if you stand up for what the Bible teaches.

  267. Do not be frightened.

  268. We have a blessing.

  269. So, don't fear.

  270. Instead, we can speak of the great hope

  271. that we have.

  272. How do we do that?

  273. Look at verse 15.

  274. Chapter 3, verse 15.

  275. But in your hearts

  276. set apart Christ as Lord.

  277. Christ is your King,

  278. not your boss.

  279. Christ rules over your life.

  280. He controls your destiny.

  281. He has given you the inheritance

  282. and the blessing.

  283. God has made you a child.

  284. Make Him your Lord.

  285. Make Him the reason for your life.

  286. Verse 15.

  287. Always be prepared to give an answer

  288. to everyone who asks you

  289. to give the reason for the hope

  290. that you have.

  291. You see,

  292. when we bless those

  293. who speak against us,

  294. when we repay hurt

  295. with kindness,

  296. when we do good

  297. to those

  298. who speak maliciously

  299. against us,

  300. it is so counter-cultural.

  301. It is so different

  302. to how the world responds.

  303. that a time will come

  304. when someone

  305. is going to ask of you

  306. or speak to you

  307. and say,

  308. why?

  309. Why do you not get angry?

  310. Why do you care

  311. for those people

  312. that insult you?

  313. Why do you respond

  314. in kindness

  315. when you've been

  316. so desperately wronged?

  317. Why do you respect

  318. your boss

  319. even when they

  320. disrespect you?

  321. Why do you still

  322. love your spouse

  323. even when

  324. they speak bad of you?

  325. Why do you not

  326. repay evil with evil

  327. and insult with insult?

  328. Answer.

  329. Look at verse 15.

  330. Because of the hope

  331. that we have.

  332. Because Jesus

  333. has died for me

  334. and forgiven me,

  335. I can forgive others.

  336. I don't need

  337. to hold a grudge.

  338. Because Jesus

  339. has risen

  340. from the grave

  341. for me

  342. and has given me

  343. an inheritance

  344. and a blessing,

  345. I've got everything

  346. to look forward to

  347. so I can give my life

  348. to serve those

  349. who may stand

  350. against me.

  351. Because Jesus

  352. has blessed me,

  353. because I belong

  354. to him,

  355. because I am

  356. part of his family,

  357. because I am

  358. a royal people,

  359. that royal priesthood,

  360. a people belonging

  361. to God,

  362. I can now

  363. bless.

  364. I can speak

  365. of the hope

  366. that I have.

  367. So in the face

  368. of opposition,

  369. do not fear.

  370. Always be prepared

  371. to give an answer.

  372. Be ready.

  373. Have it on the tip

  374. of your tongue

  375. to talk about Jesus

  376. and what he means

  377. to you.

  378. End of verse 15,

  379. but do it with

  380. gentleness

  381. and respect.

  382. I was talking

  383. to someone recently

  384. who had made

  385. the decision

  386. not to play

  387. matches

  388. if it clashed

  389. with their times

  390. of their church

  391. gathering.

  392. An important match

  393. had come up

  394. and they told

  395. the rest of their team

  396. and their coaches

  397. I'm not able

  398. to play

  399. today.

  400. Inevitably,

  401. they were asked

  402. why?

  403. And their answer

  404. was really simple.

  405. They just said

  406. because I'll be

  407. going to church.

  408. The response

  409. caused the group

  410. of friends

  411. to laugh

  412. and ask

  413. why would you

  414. go to church?

  415. And very simply

  416. they said

  417. Jesus

  418. is more important.

  419. He's a hope.

  420. He's the reason

  421. for our life.

  422. So don't be afraid

  423. of people's threats.

  424. Don't fear

  425. what they may

  426. think about you

  427. or what they may

  428. say about you.

  429. Instead,

  430. speak confidently

  431. of the hope

  432. that we have

  433. in Jesus.

  434. Bless those

  435. who oppose you.

  436. Speak hope

  437. to those

  438. who threaten

  439. you.

  440. And third,

  441. look to Christ

  442. who will

  443. vindicate you.

  444. You see,

  445. being a faithful

  446. witness in the world

  447. is not easy.

  448. It's really,

  449. really tough.

  450. Look at verse 17.

  451. It is better

  452. if it is God's

  453. will to suffer

  454. for doing good

  455. than for doing evil.

  456. But why?

  457. Are you mad?

  458. What's the point?

  459. Why would we

  460. be so stupid

  461. and be so willing

  462. to suffer?

  463. Why bless

  464. those who insult

  465. you if all

  466. you're going

  467. to get

  468. is more insults?

  469. Why speak

  470. hope to people

  471. if all we're

  472. going to get

  473. is abuse?

  474. Why be

  475. a faithful witness?

  476. Why bother?

  477. Why suffer

  478. for doing good?

  479. Why?

  480. It doesn't

  481. make sense

  482. unless

  483. Christ

  484. vindicates

  485. you

  486. and he will.

  487. Christ

  488. will put

  489. the record

  490. straight.

  491. Christ

  492. will correct

  493. every rhyme.

  494. Christ

  495. will see

  496. that you

  497. taste

  498. victory.

  499. Let me

  500. explain this

  501. in three

  502. ways.

  503. First,

  504. Christ

  505. suffered

  506. and now

  507. rules.

  508. So we

  509. are to

  510. keep going.

  511. We are to

  512. bless those

  513. who oppose

  514. us.

  515. We are to

  516. speak hope

  517. to those

  518. who threaten

  519. us because

  520. verse 18

  521. for Christ

  522. died for

  523. sins once

  524. for all

  525. the righteous

  526. for the

  527. unrighteous

  528. to bring you

  529. to God.

  530. Christ

  531. suffered

  532. for you.

  533. He didn't

  534. repay evil

  535. with evil.

  536. He didn't

  537. retaliate

  538. with insult.

  539. He blessed

  540. those who

  541. opposed him.

  542. He spoke

  543. to those

  544. who threatened

  545. him.

  546. In fact,

  547. he died

  548. for those,

  549. for people

  550. like us

  551. who also

  552. stood

  553. against him.

  554. He died

  555. for our

  556. sins,

  557. for my

  558. sin,

  559. for your

  560. sin,

  561. the righteous

  562. for the

  563. unrighteous.

  564. He took

  565. all our

  566. unrighteous

  567. behaviour

  568. on himself,

  569. suffered the

  570. punishment

  571. that we

  572. deserve so

  573. that we

  574. might have

  575. his

  576. righteousness

  577. and be

  578. treated

  579. as Jesus

  580. deserves

  581. to be

  582. treated.

  583. End of

  584. verse 18,

  585. he was

  586. put to

  587. death

  588. in the

  589. body,

  590. crucified

  591. on a

  592. cross,

  593. but made

  594. alive by

  595. the Spirit,

  596. risen again

  597. from the

  598. dead.

  599. Verse 22,

  600. who has

  601. gone into

  602. heaven

  603. and is

  604. at God's

  605. right hand

  606. with angels

  607. and authorities

  608. and powers

  609. in submission

  610. to him.

  611. Yes,

  612. Jesus

  613. suffered

  614. and died.

  615. He was

  616. mocked

  617. and ridiculed,

  618. laughed at,

  619. spat upon,

  620. but now

  621. he lives

  622. and he

  623. reigns.

  624. The powers

  625. and authorities

  626. that stood

  627. against him

  628. now bow

  629. in submission

  630. to him.

  631. Jesus

  632. has been

  633. vindicated.

  634. The record

  635. has been

  636. put

  637. right.

  638. Now,

  639. what is

  640. true of

  641. Christ

  642. will be

  643. true

  644. for you

  645. if you

  646. follow

  647. him.

  648. Look,

  649. what happens

  650. when Christ

  651. died for

  652. us in

  653. verse 18?

  654. What does

  655. it do?

  656. The end

  657. of verse

  658. 18,

  659. it brings

  660. us

  661. to God.

  662. We are

  663. united

  664. with him.

  665. His life

  666. becomes

  667. our life.

  668. So,

  669. what is

  670. true of

  671. Christ

  672. will become

  673. true for

  674. you.

  675. We too

  676. will die,

  677. but we

  678. will live.

  679. We too

  680. will suffer,

  681. but we

  682. will reign

  683. with him.

  684. The victory

  685. that Christ

  686. enjoys

  687. will be a

  688. victory that

  689. we too

  690. will share

  691. and enjoy.

  692. Vindication

  693. will come.

  694. And this

  695. is true

  696. for all

  697. God's

  698. people.

  699. Noah

  700. suffered

  701. but was

  702. saved.

  703. Do you

  704. remember

  705. Noah?

  706. Called by

  707. God to

  708. build an

  709. ark,

  710. that great

  711. big boat

  712. in a

  713. landlocked

  714. country,

  715. and to

  716. preach to

  717. the people

  718. and tell

  719. them that

  720. God was

  721. going to

  722. judge by

  723. sending a

  724. flood in

  725. the world.

  726. Can you

  727. imagine

  728. the abuse

  729. and the

  730. mocking

  731. that Noah

  732. faced as

  733. he built

  734. this ark

  735. with no

  736. water in

  737. sight and

  738. preaching?

  739. And yet

  740. Noah was

  741. faithful in

  742. his witness.

  743. This is how

  744. Peter describes

  745. it.

  746. Follow

  747. closely.

  748. They're

  749. difficult

  750. verses,

  751. but we

  752. can work

  753. our way

  754. through

  755. them.

  756. Look at

  757. the end

  758. of verse

  759. 18.

  760. This is

  761. speaking of

  762. Jesus.

  763. He,

  764. that's

  765. Jesus was

  766. put to

  767. death in

  768. the body,

  769. but made

  770. alive by

  771. the Spirit,

  772. through whom,

  773. so through

  774. the same

  775. Spirit,

  776. Jesus also

  777. went and

  778. preached to

  779. the spirits

  780. in prison.

  781. So,

  782. at the time

  783. of Noah,

  784. Jesus,

  785. before he

  786. ever came,

  787. the pre-incarnate

  788. Jesus,

  789. was preaching

  790. through Noah,

  791. warning them

  792. of God's

  793. coming

  794. judgment.

  795. He preached,

  796. we're told,

  797. in verse 19,

  798. to the

  799. spirits in

  800. prison.

  801. It's a

  802. strange

  803. phrase.

  804. Who are

  805. the spirits

  806. in prison?

  807. Well,

  808. read on

  809. verse 20.

  810. They are

  811. they who

  812. disobeyed

  813. long ago

  814. when God

  815. waited patiently

  816. in the days

  817. of Noah

  818. while the

  819. ark was

  820. being built.

  821. The spirits

  822. in prison

  823. are the

  824. people,

  825. those who

  826. are,

  827. if you like,

  828. are entrapped

  829. enslaved

  830. to their

  831. sin,

  832. who

  833. disobeyed

  834. God

  835. and ignored

  836. God.

  837. It was

  838. not an easy

  839. task for

  840. Noah to

  841. preach this

  842. message to

  843. a hardened

  844. bunch of

  845. people,

  846. but he

  847. kept on

  848. preaching,

  849. even though

  850. they didn't

  851. want to

  852. listen,

  853. even though

  854. they ignored

  855. everything he

  856. said.

  857. And Noah

  858. suffered for

  859. doing good.

  860. He faced

  861. abuse,

  862. he faced

  863. mocking,

  864. he laughed

  865. at,

  866. he was

  867. ridiculed,

  868. it was

  869. really tough.

  870. But what

  871. happened to

  872. Noah?

  873. End of

  874. verse 20,

  875. in it,

  876. in the

  877. ark that

  878. he built,

  879. only a

  880. few people,

  881. eight in

  882. all,

  883. were saved

  884. through

  885. water.

  886. Noah

  887. suffered,

  888. but yet

  889. he was

  890. saved,

  891. he was

  892. vindicated.

  893. now it's

  894. not just

  895. true for

  896. Noah,

  897. it's true

  898. for all

  899. of God's

  900. people.

  901. You see,

  902. we suffer,

  903. but we

  904. are saved.

  905. Look at

  906. verse 21,

  907. follow with

  908. me,

  909. keep closely

  910. to the

  911. text and

  912. we'll work

  913. our way

  914. through.

  915. Verse 21,

  916. and this

  917. water

  918. symbolises

  919. baptism

  920. that now

  921. saves you

  922. also.

  923. So the

  924. flood of

  925. God's

  926. judgment,

  927. back at

  928. the time

  929. of Noah,

  930. and the

  931. ark of

  932. salvation,

  933. the flood

  934. of judgment,

  935. the ark

  936. of salvation

  937. is a

  938. picture,

  939. he's saying,

  940. of Christian

  941. baptism.

  942. The water,

  943. the rain,

  944. the flood

  945. brought judgment,

  946. death,

  947. and separation

  948. from God.

  949. The ark

  950. which carried

  951. Noah through

  952. the waters

  953. brought salvation,

  954. life,

  955. and eternity

  956. with God.

  957. Now when

  958. we are

  959. baptized,

  960. it is a

  961. picture of

  962. being saved

  963. from the

  964. judgment of

  965. God.

  966. Being baptized

  967. is going

  968. down into

  969. the water,

  970. under the

  971. water.

  972. water.

  973. It is as

  974. if God's

  975. judgment is

  976. falling on

  977. us,

  978. but the

  979. point is

  980. we don't

  981. stay under

  982. the water,

  983. we come

  984. up,

  985. we come

  986. out through

  987. the water,

  988. symbolizing

  989. our rescue

  990. from God's

  991. judgment.

  992. Now we

  993. must be

  994. very careful

  995. not to

  996. think that

  997. this simple

  998. act of

  999. baptism

  1000. saves us.

  1001. No,

  1002. look at

  1003. the end

  1004. of verse

  1005. 21.

  1006. it saves

  1007. you by

  1008. the

  1009. resurrection

  1010. of Jesus

  1011. Christ.

  1012. Just as

  1013. Jesus was

  1014. raised to

  1015. life,

  1016. so by

  1017. faith in

  1018. his

  1019. resurrection,

  1020. we too

  1021. are raised

  1022. to new

  1023. life.

  1024. As we

  1025. come up

  1026. out

  1027. through

  1028. the water,

  1029. we are

  1030. demonstrating

  1031. our trust

  1032. in Christ

  1033. for our

  1034. salvation,

  1035. just as

  1036. Christ was

  1037. raised,

  1038. so we

  1039. too will

  1040. rise with

  1041. him.

  1042. you go,

  1043. what's he

  1044. talking about

  1045. baptism for?

  1046. What's

  1047. this

  1048. baptism

  1049. got to

  1050. do

  1051. with

  1052. when I'm

  1053. being

  1054. laughed at

  1055. when I'm

  1056. at school?

  1057. How does

  1058. baptism help

  1059. me when

  1060. people ignore

  1061. me at work

  1062. and speak

  1063. against me?

  1064. What's the

  1065. point of

  1066. baptism

  1067. when I

  1068. suffer as

  1069. a Christian?

  1070. How is

  1071. this going

  1072. to help

  1073. me?

  1074. Well,

  1075. when we

  1076. face

  1077. opposition,

  1078. when we

  1079. face

  1080. unjust

  1081. suffering,

  1082. insult,

  1083. abuse,

  1084. malicious

  1085. talk,

  1086. whatever it

  1087. may be,

  1088. he's saying,

  1089. I want

  1090. you to

  1091. look back.

  1092. I want

  1093. you to

  1094. remember

  1095. your

  1096. baptism.

  1097. Because

  1098. baptism

  1099. is something

  1100. visible,

  1101. something

  1102. tangible.

  1103. It is

  1104. something that

  1105. we physically

  1106. experience.

  1107. As we

  1108. look back

  1109. to our

  1110. baptism,

  1111. we remember

  1112. that just

  1113. as we

  1114. came up

  1115. out

  1116. through

  1117. the

  1118. water.

  1119. So a

  1120. day will

  1121. come when

  1122. we too

  1123. are going

  1124. to rise

  1125. and we

  1126. will

  1127. experience

  1128. salvation

  1129. in all

  1130. its

  1131. fullness.

  1132. The

  1133. suffering,

  1134. the

  1135. struggles

  1136. that we

  1137. go through

  1138. right now

  1139. are not

  1140. going to

  1141. be

  1142. forever.

  1143. We

  1144. will

  1145. rise.

  1146. So

  1147. think

  1148. back,

  1149. remember

  1150. the time

  1151. when you

  1152. were

  1153. baptized.

  1154. That's

  1155. why

  1156. baptism

  1157. is so

  1158. important.

  1159. if you

  1160. are a

  1161. Christian

  1162. here today

  1163. and you

  1164. are claiming

  1165. and saying

  1166. yes,

  1167. I follow

  1168. Jesus

  1169. and you

  1170. are not

  1171. baptized.

  1172. Well,

  1173. you ought

  1174. to be.

  1175. You ought

  1176. to be.

  1177. Because in

  1178. this context

  1179. it's going

  1180. to be a

  1181. tremendous

  1182. help to

  1183. you as

  1184. a Christian.

  1185. As you

  1186. seek to

  1187. live the

  1188. Christian life

  1189. and as you

  1190. find it

  1191. difficult to

  1192. be a

  1193. Christian

  1194. where you

  1195. are,

  1196. this

  1197. baptism

  1198. that you

  1199. look back

  1200. to is

  1201. going to

  1202. help you

  1203. and bring

  1204. to memory

  1205. and remind

  1206. you that

  1207. yes,

  1208. it is a

  1209. struggle.

  1210. But it's

  1211. not going to

  1212. be like this

  1213. forever.

  1214. I too

  1215. am going

  1216. to rise.

  1217. You see,

  1218. for the

  1219. Christian,

  1220. baptism

  1221. becomes that

  1222. defining

  1223. moment in

  1224. our lives

  1225. when we

  1226. publicly

  1227. align

  1228. ourselves

  1229. to Christ,

  1230. when we

  1231. declare

  1232. yes,

  1233. I am

  1234. with

  1235. Christ.

  1236. Where

  1237. he goes,

  1238. I will

  1239. go.

  1240. What is

  1241. true of

  1242. Christ

  1243. is true

  1244. of me.

  1245. In

  1246. times of

  1247. struggling

  1248. and suffering

  1249. we can

  1250. look back

  1251. and remember

  1252. just as

  1253. Christ

  1254. suffered,

  1255. we too

  1256. will suffer.

  1257. Just as

  1258. Christ was

  1259. raised,

  1260. we too

  1261. will rise.

  1262. Just as

  1263. Christ was

  1264. vindicated,

  1265. so we

  1266. too will

  1267. be vindicated.

  1268. The

  1269. victory

  1270. that Christ

  1271. enjoys

  1272. today

  1273. will be

  1274. ours to

  1275. enjoy

  1276. forever.

  1277. I don't

  1278. know every

  1279. circumstance

  1280. where you

  1281. will be

  1282. this week,

  1283. but as

  1284. you

  1285. go,

  1286. bless

  1287. those

  1288. who may

  1289. stand

  1290. against

  1291. you.

  1292. The

  1293. person who

  1294. you find

  1295. difficult to

  1296. work with,

  1297. the person

  1298. who you

  1299. find it

  1300. hard to

  1301. be a

  1302. friend to,

  1303. bless

  1304. them.

  1305. For

  1306. those that

  1307. may

  1308. threaten

  1309. you,

  1310. those who

  1311. may speak

  1312. against

  1313. you,

  1314. speak hope

  1315. to them.

  1316. Speak

  1317. speak about

  1318. Jesus.

  1319. Don't fear

  1320. what they

  1321. say.

  1322. You have

  1323. a blessing

  1324. to come,

  1325. an inheritance

  1326. to come.

  1327. You have

  1328. everything to

  1329. look forward

  1330. to.

  1331. And we

  1332. can keep

  1333. on doing

  1334. it because

  1335. we will be

  1336. vindicated.

  1337. We will

  1338. share in

  1339. the victory

  1340. that Christ

  1341. has.

  1342. Look back

  1343. and remember

  1344. your baptism.

  1345. remember

  1346. that day.

  1347. Feel it,

  1348. picture it,

  1349. think of it.

  1350. I went

  1351. down,

  1352. I rose,

  1353. I will be

  1354. vindicated

  1355. with Christ.

  1356. Let's pray

  1357. together.

  1358. Father,

  1359. we recognize

  1360. that it's

  1361. so easy

  1362. to be a

  1363. follower of

  1364. Christ in

  1365. this room,

  1366. in this

  1367. gathering.

  1368. It's easy

  1369. to sing

  1370. songs about

  1371. you.

  1372. It's easy

  1373. to declare,

  1374. I believe

  1375. in God

  1376. the Father.

  1377. God,

  1378. we all

  1379. fear

  1380. leaving

  1381. this

  1382. building,

  1383. going to

  1384. work

  1385. tomorrow,

  1386. going to

  1387. college,

  1388. going to

  1389. school,

  1390. going into

  1391. our families,

  1392. what people

  1393. will think,

  1394. what people

  1395. will say.

  1396. Father,

  1397. remind us

  1398. today,

  1399. fill us

  1400. with the

  1401. hope of

  1402. that inheritance,

  1403. that blessing,

  1404. that we

  1405. will not

  1406. fear,

  1407. but that we

  1408. will be

  1409. confident to

  1410. speak out

  1411. for Jesus,

  1412. knowing

  1413. that just

  1414. as Christ

  1415. suffered

  1416. and now

  1417. reigns,

  1418. so we

  1419. too will

  1420. reign with

  1421. him.

  1422. We will

  1423. be vindicated,

  1424. the record

  1425. will be set

  1426. straight,

  1427. we will

  1428. receive glory

  1429. and we

  1430. will be

  1431. with you.

  1432. So,

  1433. Father,

  1434. fill us

  1435. with that

  1436. vision today.

  1437. May it

  1438. be the

  1439. vision for

  1440. our week,

  1441. that as we

  1442. go forward,

  1443. we would

  1444. live for

  1445. you.

  1446. Thank you

  1447. that you

  1448. are our

  1449. saviour

  1450. and ruler

  1451. of the

  1452. world.

  1453. Amen.
