  1. 902. So page 902 of the Church Bible, Hosea chapter 4, just starting in verse 1.

    Hosea 4 chapter mention

  2. Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites, because the Lord has a charge to bring against

  3. you who live in the land. There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgement of God in the

  4. land. There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery. They break all bounds,

  5. and bloodshed follows bloodshed. Because of this the land mourns, and all who live in it waste away.

  6. The beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish of the sea are dying.

  7. But let no man bring a charge, let no man accuse another, for your people are like those who bring

  8. charges against a priest. You stumble day and night, and the prophets stumble with you.

  9. So I will destroy your mother. My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you

  10. have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests. Because you have ignored the law of your

  11. God, I also will ignore your children. The more the priests increased, the more they sinned against

  12. me. They exchange their glory for something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of my people

  13. and relish their wickedness. And it will be, like people, like priests, I will punish both of them

  14. for their ways, and repay them for their deeds. They will eat but not have enough. They will engage

  15. in prostitution but not increase. Because they have deserted the Lord to give themselves to prostitution,

  16. to old wine and new, which take away the understanding of my people. They consult a wooden idol and are

  17. answered by a stick of wood. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray. They are unfaithful to their God.

  18. They sacrifice in the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar and

  19. terebinth, where the shade is pleasant. Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution and your daughters-in-law

  20. ought to adultery. I will not punish your daughters when they turn to prostitution, nor your daughters-in-law

  21. when they commit adultery. Because the men themselves consort with harlots and sacrifice with shrine

  22. prostitutes. A people without understanding will come to ruin. Though you commit adultery, O Israel,

  23. let not Judah become guilty. Do not go to Gilgal. Do not go up to Beth-Avon. And do not swear as surely

  24. as the Lord lives. The Israelites are stubborn, like a stubborn heifer. How then can the Lord pasture them

  25. like lambs in a meadow? Ephraim is joined to idols. Leave him alone. Even when their drinks are gone,

  26. they continue their prostitution. Their rulers dearly love shameful ways. A whirlwind will sweep

  27. them away, and their sacrifices will bring them shame.

  28. Thank you, Kirsty. Hosea chapter 4. So keep your Bibles open there, please. Alex is just handing

    Hosea 4 chapter mention

  29. around pens and a little sheet which has notes if you want to take and follow along with the talk.

  30. Again, just to remind you and encourage you that if you miss any of the talks, you can find them all

  31. on the church website. And the little booklet that's on the table as well, The Passion and Pursuit of God,

  32. which gives you a review, an overview of what the book is all about, which is always refreshing too.

  33. Thank you. So let's turn to God as we pray

  34. and ask for his help.

  35. Father, thank you for your word.

  36. Thank you for its truth.

  37. Thank you for the way in which it speaks to us today.

  38. And we pray that as we listen, as we engage,

  39. that Father, you would be turning our hearts

  40. away from other lovers and other things.

  41. Turning our hearts and our attention to you,

  42. our true love,

  43. our faithful

  44. and loyal

  45. husband.

  46. Help us to do that well.

  47. We need your help.

  48. So pour out your spirit on us, we pray.

  49. Amen.

  50. All rise.

  51. How does the defendant plead?

  52. Guilty

  53. or not guilty?

  54. Well, I can still remember my day in court.

  55. It was a humbling experience.

  56. The evidence was laid out before the judge,

  57. a witness's account

  58. and the moment captured on CCTV.

  59. Driving across a railway line when the barrier was coming down

  60. was not only stupid,

  61. it was costly.

  62. The judgment

  63. was just

  64. and fair.

  65. I had no excuse.

  66. Well, chapter 4

  67. brings all of us

  68. into

  69. the courtroom.

  70. Not just any court,

  71. God's marriage court.

  72. And on trial

  73. is God's wife,

  74. Israel.

  75. Remember,

  76. God's marriage to his people

  77. was illustrated

  78. through the marriage of Hosea to Gomer.

  79. Just as Gomer

  80. had left Hosea

  81. for other lovers,

  82. so Israel had walked out

  83. on their marriage to God.

  84. But God was not about

  85. to give up on his loved one.

  86. Have a look at chapter 3

  87. and verse 1.

  88. The Lord said to me,

  89. so the Lord is speaking to Hosea,

  90. Hosea,

  91. go show your love

  92. to your wife again,

  93. though she is loved by another

  94. and is an adulteress.

  95. Love her

  96. as the Lord loves

  97. the Israelites.

  98. And so Hosea would

  99. go and love his wife again

  100. and he brings her back

  101. into the family home.

  102. It's a wonderful picture

  103. of God's love and grace

  104. towards people like us.

  105. So if chapters 1 to 3

  106. give us the big picture

  107. of God's marriage

  108. to his people,

  109. then chapters 4 to 14

  110. give us the detail

  111. of how the marriage failed,

  112. how it broke down,

  113. and how God is going

  114. to restore it again.

  115. Hosea and Gomer

  116. may not be mentioned again,

  117. but God's marriage

  118. to his people

  119. is still central

  120. to the story.

  121. And here we are

  122. in chapter 4

  123. and it all starts

  124. in God's marriage court.

  125. God,

  126. the faithful,

  127. loyal husband,

  128. has turned judge,

  129. jury,

  130. and prosecutor.

  131. Israel,

  132. God's unfaithful wife,

  133. is the silent

  134. defendant.

  135. Chapter 4,

  136. verse 1.

  137. You can imagine the scene.

  138. Israel,

  139. the wife,

  140. in the dock.

  141. God,

  142. the judge,

  143. comes in.

  144. Chapter 4,

  145. verse 1.

  146. Hear the word

  147. of the Lord,

  148. you Israelites,

  149. because the Lord

  150. has a charge

  151. to bring against you

  152. who live

  153. in the land.

  154. Now,

  155. as we enter

  156. this marriage court

  157. and listen to the proceedings,

  158. we're not just

  159. spectators up in the gallery.

  160. We are also

  161. in the dock.

  162. We are also

  163. the defendant.

  164. Because we too

  165. have failed

  166. to love God

  167. as we should,

  168. we too

  169. have led

  170. an adulterous

  171. life.

  172. So first,

  173. the charge

  174. against us,

  175. no love.

  176. Look at the second

  177. part of verse 1.

  178. Here's the charge.

  179. There is no

  180. faithfulness,

  181. no love,

  182. no acknowledgement

  183. of God

  184. in the land.

  185. Yes,

  186. Israel was married

  187. to God,

  188. but it was a marriage

  189. on paper,

  190. not in practice.

  191. They enjoyed

  192. receiving all

  193. of God's

  194. wonderful gifts

  195. and his blessings

  196. and provision.

  197. They took it all,

  198. but they did not

  199. want to fulfill

  200. their marriage

  201. obligations.

  202. There was no

  203. faithfulness,

  204. no love,

  205. and no

  206. acknowledgement

  207. of God.

  208. And it seems

  209. that our love

  210. for God

  211. is no different.

  212. You see,

  213. God is not

  214. some distant

  215. impersonal force

  216. away out there.

  217. He is our

  218. loving creator

  219. and he made us

  220. for a relationship

  221. with him.

  222. That's why we exist.

  223. He created us

  224. so that we could

  225. be married to him.

  226. But we've rejected

  227. his advances.

  228. We've turned down

  229. his marriage proposal.

  230. Oh,

  231. we're quite happy

  232. to receive all

  233. his blessings

  234. and all the good

  235. things that we get.

  236. But we don't want

  237. to commit

  238. to him.

  239. And the evidence

  240. is seen

  241. all around us

  242. first

  243. in a breakdown

  244. in society.

  245. Look at verse 2.

  246. Because there's

  247. no love

  248. for God,

  249. well,

  250. verse 2,

  251. there's only cursing,

  252. lying,

  253. and murder,

  254. and stealing,

  255. and adultery.

  256. They break

  257. all bounds

  258. and bloodshed

  259. follows bloodshed.

  260. Now,

  261. you listen to the news

  262. and I think

  263. that's a pretty

  264. accurate description

  265. of the human race.

  266. Because we do not

  267. love God,

  268. society is

  269. completely broken.

  270. There are no

  271. boundaries.

  272. We live and do

  273. as we please,

  274. we do what we like,

  275. and bloodshed

  276. follows bloodshed.

  277. There's wars,

  278. there's crime,

  279. there's violence.

  280. But not only

  281. is society broken,

  282. look at the evidence

  283. all around us

  284. in the physical world.

  285. Verse 3.

  286. Because of this,

  287. because there's

  288. no love for God,

  289. not only is society

  290. broken,

  291. but the world

  292. is broken.

  293. Verse 3.

  294. Because of this,

  295. the land mourns,

  296. and all who live

  297. in it

  298. waste away.

  299. The beasts

  300. of the field,

  301. the birds

  302. of the air,

  303. the fish

  304. in the sea,

  305. they're all

  306. dying.

  307. And isn't that

  308. what we see

  309. in our world today?

  310. Not only is there

  311. the wars,

  312. but there's flooding,

  313. there's famine,

  314. there's earthquakes,

  315. there's disease,

  316. there's pollution.

  317. It just goes on

  318. and on.

  319. Everything is

  320. wasting away.

  321. Creation

  322. is groaning,

  323. it's breaking.

  324. Because we have

  325. not loved God

  326. as husband,

  327. the evidence

  328. is clear to see.

  329. Society is broken.

  330. The world

  331. is broken.

  332. The human race

  333. is broken.

  334. But you say,

  335. well,

  336. I'm not like that.

  337. I'm not that person

  338. that you've just read

  339. in verse 2.

  340. I care for people.

  341. I don't murder,

  342. I don't steal

  343. or lie.

  344. Well,

  345. that's exactly

  346. how the religious

  347. priest thought.

  348. Look at verse 4.

  349. But let no man

  350. bring a charge,

  351. let no man

  352. accuse another,

  353. so stop pointing

  354. fingers at each other,

  355. for your people

  356. are like those

  357. who bring charges

  358. against a priest.

  359. In other words,

  360. here are the priests,

  361. they claim to be

  362. innocent and above

  363. and superior

  364. and better than

  365. everybody else,

  366. but he's saying,

  367. you're just as bad.

  368. In fact,

  369. having more priests

  370. didn't make things

  371. any better.

  372. Having more church services

  373. and more church buildings

  374. didn't make things better,

  375. it only made things worse.

  376. Look at verse 7.

  377. The more that the priests

  378. increased,

  379. the more they sinned

  380. against me.

  381. They exchanged their glory

  382. for something disgraceful.

  383. They feed on the sins

  384. of my people

  385. and relish

  386. their wickedness.

  387. You see,

  388. every time the people

  389. sinned,

  390. they would have to go

  391. to the priest

  392. to go and make a sacrifice.

  393. And the way in which

  394. the priest was paid

  395. was, well,

  396. you would give him

  397. a little bit

  398. of the sacrificed animal.

  399. Maybe a nice bit of steak

  400. or a leg of lamb,

  401. whatever it might be.

  402. So the more sin

  403. that there was,

  404. the more sacrifices

  405. that were required,

  406. and therefore,

  407. the more sacrifices

  408. that were made,

  409. well then,

  410. the more pay

  411. the priests got.

  412. And for the priests,

  413. it was simple maths.

  414. Let's keep the sin going

  415. and we earn more money.

  416. We earn more food

  417. for ourselves.

  418. Verse 8.

  419. That's what it's telling us.

  420. They feed

  421. on the sins

  422. of the people.

  423. They relish

  424. in the wickedness.

  425. It was simply

  426. too profitable

  427. for the priests

  428. to actually deal

  429. with the sin.

  430. their attitude was,

  431. if we try and deal

  432. with the sin,

  433. we're out of a job.

  434. We're not going

  435. to do that.

  436. The smug religious

  437. were just as bad.

  438. And I think

  439. it can be a bit

  440. like us,

  441. like that with us.

  442. We can come along

  443. to our church services

  444. and do the religious

  445. things,

  446. help people out

  447. now and again.

  448. But why would we

  449. want to increase

  450. our giving

  451. to the unreached

  452. peoples of the world

  453. when it would mean

  454. we would have less

  455. to spend on ourselves?

  456. No, I'd want to give

  457. to that because

  458. then I wouldn't be

  459. able to do this.

  460. Why commit to

  461. serving the most

  462. vulnerable in our

  463. community when it

  464. would mean,

  465. well, it stops me

  466. from doing the things

  467. I want to do?

  468. Why bother using

  469. your gifts in the

  470. life of the church

  471. when it means

  472. I'm not going

  473. to get talking

  474. to people

  475. or see my

  476. friends as much?

  477. You see,

  478. sometimes

  479. it's too profitable

  480. for us to deal

  481. with the sin.

  482. We just prefer

  483. to kind of live

  484. our nice,

  485. comfortable,

  486. cosy life.

  487. The reality is

  488. we're all guilty.

  489. That's how it's

  490. summed up in

  491. verse 9.

  492. And it will be

  493. like people,

  494. like priests.

  495. It doesn't

  496. matter who we

  497. are, whether

  498. we're religious

  499. or irreligious,

  500. whether we're a

  501. church leader

  502. or a church

  503. member,

  504. whether we go

  505. to church or

  506. we don't go

  507. to church,

  508. all of us,

  509. the human race,

  510. the evidence is

  511. there to see

  512. society is broken,

  513. the world is

  514. broken.

  515. We have not

  516. loved God

  517. as we should.

  518. So first,

  519. the charge

  520. against us,

  521. no love.

  522. Second,

  523. the sin

  524. within us,

  525. an adulterous

  526. heart.

  527. Look at

  528. verse 12.

  529. They consult,

  530. so again

  531. speaking about

  532. the nation

  533. of Israel,

  534. they consult

  535. a wooden

  536. idol and

  537. are answered

  538. by a stick

  539. of wood.

  540. It's like

  541. you or me

  542. getting a box

  543. of matches,

  544. opening it up,

  545. chucking it up

  546. in the air

  547. and then

  548. seeing where

  549. the matches

  550. lie and

  551. determining

  552. what direction

  553. you're going

  554. to go in

  555. life by the

  556. direction the

  557. matches are

  558. pointing.

  559. That's what

  560. they were doing,

  561. chucking bits

  562. of wood around

  563. to see what

  564. they should

  565. do.

  566. And worst

  567. of all,

  568. rest of

  569. verse 12,

  570. a spirit of

  571. prostitution

  572. leads them

  573. astray,

  574. they are

  575. unfaithful

  576. to their

  577. God.

  578. As a nation,

  579. as a people,

  580. they had

  581. wandered

  582. after other

  583. lovers,

  584. they had

  585. rejected their

  586. marriage to

  587. God and

  588. committed

  589. adultery,

  590. they loved

  591. other things

  592. and other

  593. people more.

  594. It was

  595. really quite

  596. gross.

  597. Look at

  598. verse 13.

  599. They sacrifice

  600. on the

  601. mountaintops

  602. and burn

  603. offerings on

  604. the hills,

  605. under the

  606. oak,

  607. poplar,

  608. terebinth,

  609. where the

  610. shade is

  611. planted.

  612. It was

  613. kind of a

  614. nice thing

  615. to do,

  616. shaded by

  617. the trees.

  618. You see,

  619. when the

  620. people wanted

  621. something,

  622. they would

  623. go up to

  624. the mountaintops

  625. and they

  626. wouldn't,

  627. instead of

  628. turning to

  629. God,

  630. they would

  631. turn to

  632. their made-up

  633. gods.

  634. And as

  635. part of

  636. their sacrifice

  637. of offering

  638. things,

  639. the men

  640. and the

  641. women who

  642. all came

  643. there,

  644. they would

  645. all have

  646. sex with

  647. each other

  648. in the

  649. hope that

  650. somehow it

  651. would sting

  652. the gods

  653. in the

  654. heavens to

  655. have sex,

  656. which would

  657. result in

  658. earthly blessings

  659. and fertility,

  660. that somehow it

  661. would cause

  662. rains to fall

  663. and the sun

  664. to shine and

  665. good harvest to

  666. grow and that

  667. the animals would

  668. reproduce.

  669. It was really

  670. gross.

  671. That's what's

  672. being described

  673. here at the

  674. end of verse

  675. 13.

  676. Therefore,

  677. your daughters

  678. turn to

  679. prostitution and

  680. your daughters-in-law

  681. to adultery.

  682. not only the

  683. women,

  684. but the

  685. men.

  686. Look at the

  687. middle of

  688. verse 14.

  689. The men

  690. themselves

  691. consort with

  692. harlots and

  693. sacrifice with

  694. shrine prostitutes.

  695. So this

  696. picture of

  697. physical adultery

  698. not only showed

  699. how messed up

  700. the nation had

  701. become,

  702. it was a

  703. picture of

  704. their spiritual

  705. adultery with

  706. God.

  707. Their joining

  708. with other

  709. people was

  710. a picture of

  711. how they had

  712. become married

  713. to other

  714. gods.

  715. Verse 17.

  716. Ephraim,

  717. which is another

  718. name for

  719. Israel.

  720. Ephraim is

  721. joined to

  722. idols.

  723. Literally,

  724. they've broken

  725. up the

  726. relationship with

  727. God saying,

  728. we don't want

  729. you anymore.

  730. They've

  731. effectively signed

  732. their divorce

  733. papers with

  734. God saying,

  735. we don't want

  736. you, and

  737. they've now

  738. formed a

  739. new marriage,

  740. a new

  741. relationship with

  742. their new

  743. gods.

  744. They've fallen

  745. in love with

  746. other things

  747. and other

  748. people.

  749. Now we

  750. might look at

  751. all of this

  752. and it seems

  753. somewhat distant

  754. and look in

  755. horror and

  756. disgust and

  757. think, really?

  758. Is that the

  759. way they

  760. behaved?

  761. But we

  762. need to

  763. grasp it

  764. because it's

  765. a picture of

  766. our own

  767. hearts.

  768. Look what it

  769. says in

  770. verse 12,

  771. the end of

  772. verse 12.

  773. It talks about

  774. a spirit of

  775. prostitution

  776. leading people

  777. astray.

  778. They are

  779. unfaithful to

  780. God.

  781. Now we

  782. might not

  783. be a

  784. prostitute at

  785. some religious

  786. shrine,

  787. but we

  788. can all

  789. play the

  790. spiritual

  791. whore.

  792. We all

  793. chase after

  794. other lovers.

  795. others.

  796. We exchange

  797. God for

  798. other things.

  799. We make

  800. sport and

  801. career and

  802. money and

  803. sex the

  804. most important

  805. things and

  806. give our

  807. life to

  808. that.

  809. Or we

  810. replace God

  811. with other

  812. people, a

  813. spouse or a

  814. lover.

  815. They're the

  816. most important.

  817. We leave

  818. God and have

  819. affairs hoping

  820. to find joy

  821. and happiness

  822. in things and

  823. people.

  824. evil.

  825. And that's

  826. the sin

  827. within our

  828. hearts.

  829. It's what

  830. the Bible

  831. describes as

  832. adulterous

  833. behaviour.

  834. The physical

  835. adultery that

  836. Israel committed

  837. is a picture

  838. of our own

  839. spiritual adultery

  840. within our

  841. hearts.

  842. You might

  843. think, well,

  844. that's just

  845. one way I

  846. can go and

  847. it's going to

  848. be good to

  849. me, it's

  850. going to give

  851. me everything

  852. that I want.

  853. But it's a

  854. lie.

  855. It leaves

  856. us empty.

  857. Look at the

  858. beginning of

  859. verse 10.

  860. It's

  861. talking about

  862. their adulterous

  863. behaviour and

  864. leaving God

  865. for other

  866. things.

  867. Look what it

  868. says, verse 10,

  869. they will eat

  870. but not have

  871. enough.

  872. They will

  873. engage in

  874. prostitution

  875. but not

  876. increase

  877. because they

  878. have deserted

  879. the Lord to

  880. give themselves

  881. to prostitution.

  882. You see, we

  883. believe and

  884. the world

  885. tells us that

  886. if I can just

  887. get that

  888. perfect job,

  889. I will be

  890. content.

  891. If I can just

  892. find that

  893. perfect lover

  894. for my life,

  895. then everything

  896. is going to be

  897. sorted.

  898. If I can just

  899. earn enough

  900. money and buy

  901. that perfect

  902. house in the

  903. right location,

  904. then I will

  905. be absolutely

  906. happy,

  907. completely

  908. satisfied and

  909. content.

  910. If I can just

  911. have,

  912. I'll be

  913. okay.

  914. But chasing

  915. after other

  916. lovers will

  917. never satisfy

  918. you.

  919. As it says

  920. in verse 10,

  921. we will never

  922. have enough.

  923. We will never

  924. increase.

  925. chasing other

  926. lovers will

  927. never satisfy

  928. you,

  929. never fulfill

  930. you.

  931. Spiritual

  932. adultery,

  933. replacing God

  934. with other

  935. lovers,

  936. will leave you

  937. empty and

  938. broken.

  939. So second,

  940. the sin

  941. within us,

  942. adulterous

  943. hearts.

  944. Third,

  945. the warning

  946. before us,

  947. judgment

  948. coming.

  949. We can

  950. imagine

  951. Israel,

  952. God's wife,

  953. sitting there

  954. in the

  955. dock,

  956. listening as

  957. all the

  958. evidence is

  959. laid out

  960. before her.

  961. No love,

  962. an adulterous

  963. heart,

  964. and watching

  965. up in the

  966. gallery up

  967. there is

  968. Judah.

  969. Remember,

  970. Israel was

  971. the northern

  972. part of the

  973. nation,

  974. Judah was

  975. the southern

  976. part of

  977. the nation

  978. and she's

  979. come into

  980. court too,

  981. but she's

  982. sitting up

  983. in the

  984. gallery.

  985. And now

  986. God turns

  987. to speak

  988. to them.

  989. Verse 15,

  990. though you

  991. commit adultery,

  992. O Israel,

  993. so God is

  994. speaking to

  995. his wife,

  996. you have an

  997. adulterous

  998. heart,

  999. you have no

  1000. love,

  1001. and now God

  1002. turns and he

  1003. looks to

  1004. Judah up in

  1005. the gallery,

  1006. the rest of

  1007. verse 15,

  1008. let not

  1009. Judah

  1010. become guilty.

  1011. Judah,

  1012. do not

  1013. follow the

  1014. same path

  1015. as your

  1016. sister Israel.

  1017. Do not

  1018. forsake me

  1019. as your

  1020. first love.

  1021. Be careful

  1022. that you do

  1023. not have eyes

  1024. for other

  1025. lovers and

  1026. exchange me

  1027. for other

  1028. gods.

  1029. Look at the

  1030. rest of

  1031. 15.

  1032. Do not

  1033. go to

  1034. Gilgal.

  1035. Do not

  1036. go up to

  1037. Beth

  1038. Aven.

  1039. The real

  1040. name, of

  1041. course, was

  1042. Beth El.

  1043. Beth simply

  1044. means house,

  1045. El means

  1046. God, so

  1047. the house

  1048. of God, the

  1049. place that

  1050. it was meant

  1051. to be.

  1052. But Israel

  1053. had turned

  1054. Beth El

  1055. into Beth

  1056. Aven.

  1057. Aven means

  1058. wickedness, so

  1059. they had

  1060. turned the

  1061. place where

  1062. they came to

  1063. meet God

  1064. into a

  1065. house of

  1066. wickedness.

  1067. And God

  1068. is saying

  1069. to Judah,

  1070. see what

  1071. Israel has

  1072. done.

  1073. Don't go

  1074. there.

  1075. Don't go

  1076. to the

  1077. house of

  1078. wickedness.

  1079. Don't

  1080. follow in

  1081. her ways.

  1082. Verse 17,

  1083. Ephraim

  1084. is joined

  1085. to idols.

  1086. Leave him

  1087. alone.

  1088. Remember,

  1089. I'm your

  1090. husband.

  1091. It is I

  1092. who love

  1093. you.

  1094. I rescued

  1095. you from

  1096. Egypt.

  1097. I provided

  1098. you with

  1099. everything that

  1100. you have.

  1101. I love

  1102. you.

  1103. Do not

  1104. seek after

  1105. other lovers.

  1106. Because if

  1107. you do,

  1108. verse 19,

  1109. a whirlwind

  1110. will sweep

  1111. them away

  1112. and their

  1113. sacrifices

  1114. will bring

  1115. them shame.

  1116. God would

  1117. bring judgment

  1118. upon his

  1119. wife Israel.

  1120. Assyria, the

  1121. great nation,

  1122. would come in

  1123. like a

  1124. whirlwind, a

  1125. great big

  1126. tornado that

  1127. would sweep

  1128. through the

  1129. nation,

  1130. destroying the

  1131. people in

  1132. the land,

  1133. everything in

  1134. its path.

  1135. And God

  1136. is pleading

  1137. with Judah

  1138. who is

  1139. listening and

  1140. looking in

  1141. on it all.

  1142. Judah,

  1143. don't go

  1144. that way.

  1145. Don't let

  1146. your eyes

  1147. wander towards

  1148. other lovers.

  1149. Love me

  1150. because of

  1151. all I have

  1152. done for

  1153. you.

  1154. But Judah,

  1155. if you

  1156. don't love

  1157. me,

  1158. judgment

  1159. will also

  1160. come to

  1161. you.

  1162. But you

  1163. see,

  1164. this isn't

  1165. just a

  1166. warning about

  1167. Judah.

  1168. This is

  1169. actually God's

  1170. warning to

  1171. me and

  1172. to you.

  1173. You see,

  1174. if we know

  1175. our history,

  1176. not only did

  1177. Israel commit

  1178. adultery and

  1179. wander away

  1180. from God,

  1181. but Judah

  1182. went and did

  1183. the same

  1184. thing.

  1185. They didn't

  1186. listen to

  1187. God's word.

  1188. They didn't

  1189. heed the

  1190. warning.

  1191. And just

  1192. as Assyria

  1193. came in

  1194. and swept

  1195. Israel away,

  1196. in time,

  1197. Babylon would

  1198. come as a

  1199. great nation

  1200. and they

  1201. would sweep

  1202. Judah away.

  1203. God's

  1204. judgment fell

  1205. on the

  1206. people.

  1207. And all

  1208. of this is

  1209. a picture

  1210. of God's

  1211. final judgment

  1212. that is to

  1213. come.

  1214. And so it

  1215. becomes a

  1216. warning for

  1217. people like

  1218. you and

  1219. me.

  1220. it's

  1221. saying do

  1222. not chase

  1223. after other

  1224. lovers.

  1225. Don't turn

  1226. from me,

  1227. your husband,

  1228. because judgment

  1229. will come.

  1230. You want to

  1231. live a life

  1232. without God's

  1233. love?

  1234. You want to

  1235. live life your

  1236. own way and

  1237. do your own

  1238. thing?

  1239. You want to

  1240. live life

  1241. without any

  1242. boundaries?

  1243. You want to

  1244. search out your

  1245. own lovers and

  1246. turn to other

  1247. things and other

  1248. people?

  1249. If that's the

  1250. way you want

  1251. to live,

  1252. then a life

  1253. without my

  1254. love you

  1255. shall have.

  1256. But let's

  1257. remember what

  1258. that looks

  1259. like.

  1260. Do you

  1261. remember back

  1262. in verse 2

  1263. and verse 3?

  1264. Because we do

  1265. not love God,

  1266. what is there

  1267. in its place?

  1268. A broken

  1269. society?

  1270. Lying,

  1271. cursing,

  1272. murder,

  1273. stealing,

  1274. breaking of

  1275. all rounds,

  1276. bloodshed following

  1277. bloodshed?

  1278. What happens

  1279. if we do not

  1280. love him?

  1281. The land

  1282. breaks,

  1283. the world

  1284. breaks.

  1285. And God

  1286. is saying

  1287. to us,

  1288. if you do

  1289. not love

  1290. me,

  1291. if you want

  1292. to have a

  1293. life without

  1294. my love,

  1295. then a life

  1296. you shall

  1297. have.

  1298. But mark

  1299. this, it

  1300. will be for

  1301. an eternity.

  1302. It will be

  1303. hell for

  1304. an eternity.

  1305. The absence

  1306. of God's

  1307. love is

  1308. the absence

  1309. of everything

  1310. that is good,

  1311. and beautiful.

  1312. No friends,

  1313. no laughter,

  1314. no joy,

  1315. no hope,

  1316. brokenness.

  1317. God says,

  1318. you don't want

  1319. my love,

  1320. then my love

  1321. you shall not

  1322. have.

  1323. It will be

  1324. judgment,

  1325. an eternity

  1326. of separation

  1327. from me.

  1328. men,

  1329. for

  1330. to be

  1331. to be

  1332. zed.

  1333. Now, chapter

  1334. 4

  1335. is not

  1336. easy to

  1337. listen to.

  1338. I struggled

  1339. reading through

  1340. this and

  1341. thought,

  1342. how can I

  1343. speak about

  1344. this on

  1345. Sunday?

  1346. Where's the

  1347. good news?

  1348. Where's the

  1349. hope in

  1350. all of

  1351. this?

1352. well as we hear these words of chapter 4

1353. let me ask this question

  1354. what do you see?

1355. do you see a judge with terror in his eyes?

1356. or do you see a husband with tears in his eyes?

1357. is it a judge with terror?

1358. or a husband with tears?

1359. you see yes God is judge

1360. but he is the faithful loyal husband

1361. speaking to his wife whom he loves

  1362. look at verse 16

  1363. the Israelites are stubborn

  1364. like a stubborn heifer

1365. ask any of our farmers amongst us

1366. they'll tell you what a heifer is like

1367. when they don't want to move

1368. you can do all the pushing and shoving

1369. but they will not budge an inch

1370. well God had come back to his wife

  1371. time and time again

  1372. wooing her

  1373. pleading

  1374. longing

  1375. aching

  1376. please return

  1377. come back to me

1378. but she would not budge

1379. she rejected God's loving advances

1380. look at the rest of verse 16

1381. how then can the Lord pasture them like lambs in a meadow

1382. have you got that picture?

1383. because here we see the heart of God

1384. here is the husband with tears in his eyes

1385. this is God's desire for us

1386. that we would stay close to him
