  1. Verse 1 and on page 903 of the Church Bible.

  2. Hear this, you priests. Pay attention, you Israelites.

  3. Listen, O royal house. This judgment is against you.

  4. You have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.

  5. The rebels are deep in slaughter. I will discipline all of them.

  6. I know all about Ephraim. Israel is not hidden from me.

  7. Ephraim, you have now turned to prostitution. Israel is corrupt.

  8. Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God.

  9. A spirit of prostitution is in their heart. They do not acknowledge the Lord.

  10. Israel's arrogance testifies against them. The Israelites, even Ephraim, stumble in their sin.

  11. Judah also stumbles with them.

  12. When they go with their flocks and herds to seek the Lord, they will not find him.

  13. He has withdrawn himself from them.

  14. They are unfaithful to the Lord.

  15. They give birth to illegitimate children.

  16. Now their new moon festivals will devour them and their fields.

  17. Sound the trumpet in Gibeah.

  18. The horn in Ramah.

  19. Raise the battle cry in Beth-Avon.

  20. Lead on, O Benjamin.

  21. Ephraim will be laid waste on the day of reckoning.

  22. Among the tribes of Israel, I proclaim what is certain.

  23. Judah's leaders are like those who move boundary stones.

  24. I will pour out my wrath on them like a flood of water.

  25. Ephraim is oppressed, trampled in judgment, intent on pursuing idols.

  26. I am like a moth to Ephraim, like rot to the people of Judah.

  27. When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his sores,

  28. then Ephraim turned to Assyria and sent the great king for help.

  29. But he is not able to cure you, not able to heal your sores.

  30. For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a great lion to Judah.

  31. I will tear them to pieces and go away.

  32. I will carry them off with no one to rescue them.

  33. Then I will go back to my place until they admit their guilt.

  34. And they will seek my face.

  35. In their misery they will earnestly seek me.

  36. Come, let us return to the Lord.

  37. He has torn us to pieces, but he will heal us.

  38. He has injured us, but he will bind up our wounds.

  39. After two days he will revive us.

  40. On the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.

  41. Let us acknowledge the Lord.

  42. Let us press on to acknowledge him.

  43. As surely as the sun rises he will appear.

  44. He will come to us like the winter rains,

  45. like the spring rains that water the earth.

  46. Thanks, Chris.

  47. Well, let's pray.

  48. Let us pray.

  49. Father, it is our desire that we would know you better,

  50. that we would love you more.

  51. And we realize that our hearts can grow cold to you.

  52. We can turn away from you.

  53. And so we ask, Father, that through your word today,

  54. it would spark that fire,

  55. that a flame would roar,

  56. that we would be drawn closer to you afresh.

  57. That your word would be a word of healing to our lives.

  58. That you would bring us back if we need to be brought back.

  59. That you would grow us where we need to grow.

  60. That we would become more like you.

  61. So, Father, do your work amongst us today, we pray.

  62. Amen.

  63. Well, it had been an exhausting and emotional trial.

  64. Outside the court,

  65. the crowds had gathered,

  66. the press waited anxiously,

  67. cameras at the ready.

  68. Inside the court,

  69. there was complete and utter silence.

  70. The judge took his seat,

  71. ready to give his verdict.

  72. The court had heard how a wife who was loved,

  73. cared for and treasured by her husband,

  74. had left the family home and had an affair.

  75. And central to the case was when the husband

  76. took the stand to give evidence

  77. against his wife.

  78. Fighting back the tears,

  79. he explained how his wife of many years

  80. had left the marriage time and time again,

  81. refusing to come home.

  82. He took no delight in what he said.

  83. He was heartbroken,

  84. longing that she would return.

  85. What would be the verdict of the judge?

  86. Well, that's the scene as we step into chapter 5.

  87. On trial is God's wife, Israel.

  88. And giving evidence against his wife is God himself,

  89. the faithful and loyal husband.

  90. But now the husband must turn and play the role of judge.

  91. What will be his verdict?

  92. Well, look at verse 1.

  93. After his deliberations,

  94. the judge gives his verdict.

  95. Hear this, you priests.

  96. Pay attention, you Israelites.

  97. Listen, O royal house.

  98. This judgment is against you.

  99. Now let's remember that this is also our story.

  100. Because this story pictures how we,

  101. the whole human race,

  102. have rejected God's good and faithful love.

  103. We've ignored his advances towards us.

  104. We've gone in search of other lovers.

  105. And now God turns

  106. to give his verdict.

  107. What does he have to say

  108. to us?

  109. Well, it comes in three parts.

  110. First, God says,

  111. I will withdraw my love from you.

  112. Before announcing his judgment,

  113. God summarizes the evidence

  114. against his wife.

  115. Look at verse 3.

  116. I know all about Ephraim.

  117. Ephraim, of course,

  118. is another name for Israel the nation.

  119. I know all about Ephraim.

  120. Israel is not hidden from me.

  121. I've seen everything you've done.

  122. I've watched how you've walked away from me

  123. into the arms of other lovers.

  124. Ephraim, you have now turned to prostitution.

  125. Israel is corrupt.

  126. Perhaps we can remember,

  127. but we've certainly all witnessed

  128. the vows at a wedding.

  129. The groom lovingly

  130. takes the hand of his bride

  131. and makes this promise.

  132. I take you to be my lawful wedded wife.

  133. To have and to hold from this day forward.

  134. For better, for worse.

  135. For richer, for poorer.

  136. In sickness and in health.

  137. To love and to cherish.

  138. Till death us do part.

  139. And then the bride takes the hand of the groom

  140. and she places a ring on his finger.

  141. I give you this ring

  142. as a sign of my love

  143. and the promise that I have made to you today.

  144. Well, Israel had done the same thing with God.

  145. In love, God had pursued them.

  146. He had rescued them from slavery in Egypt.

  147. He had brought them to himself.

  148. And together they stood at Mount Sinai

  149. ready to make their marriage vows.

  150. And God read out the vows before his bride

  151. in what we know as the Ten Commandments.

  152. And he says to his bride,

  153. You shall have no other gods before me.

  154. You shall not bow down to them

  155. or worship them.

  156. For I, the Lord your God,

  157. am a jealous God.

  158. I will not share your love with another.

  159. And now those vows were in tatters.

  160. Verse 4.

  161. Their deeds do not permit them

  162. to return to their God.

  163. A spirit of adultery or prostitution

  164. is in their heart.

  165. They do not acknowledge the Lord.

  166. Verse 7.

  167. They are unfaithful to the Lord.

  168. They give birth to illegitimate children.

  169. They pass on their behaviour

  170. to the next generation.

  171. And like Israel,

  172. we too, the human race,

  173. have walked out on the marriage.

  174. We have not trusted God's goodness

  175. and generosity.

  176. We have believed the lies

  177. that he is not good.

  178. We have exchanged him for other lovers

  179. and gone to other things

  180. and other people

  181. in search of our joy

  182. and our happiness.

  183. Well, as we listen to the words of the judge,

  184. let's remember that these are also

  185. the words of a faithful husband

  186. with tears in his eyes.

  187. His response to his people

  188. for persistently walking out on his love,

  189. sadly, regrettably,

  190. is to withdraw his love from them.

  191. Look at verse 6.

  192. When they go with their flocks

  193. and their herds

  194. to seek the Lord,

  195. when they go to make sacrifice again

  196. and try and get back into God's favour,

  197. they will not find him.

  198. He has withdrawn himself from them.

  199. When they come running back

  200. from their failed lovers,

  201. when they come knocking on the door,

  202. there will be no answer.

  203. No one will be at home.

  204. God has left.

  205. He has withdrawn his love.

  206. It's tragic.

  207. Now, we might struggle

  208. with the very thought of that,

  209. but let's remember,

  210. Israel is a serial adulteress.

  211. This has gone on for hundreds of years,

  212. down through the generations,

  213. and it's progressively got worse.

  214. So, in a sense,

  215. God is giving them

  216. what they've been asking for all along.

  217. You want to live without my love?

  218. Then a life without my love

  219. you shall have.

  220. You see, God is jealous for his people.

  221. He's not about to give up on them.

  222. He will fight for them.

  223. He will pursue them.

  224. He will give his life for his people.

  225. But if we continue to reject his love,

  226. if we continue to push against his advances,

  227. there will come a time

  228. when he will withdraw his love from us.

  229. And we will come knocking,

  230. but there will be no answer.

  231. The tragic verdict

  232. upon those who continue to push God away.

  233. And second,

  234. the verdict continues.

  235. God says,

  236. I will bring my judgment upon you.

  237. Look at verse 8.

  238. Sound the trumpet in Giver,

  239. the horn in Ramah.

  240. Raise the battle cry in Beth Aven,

  241. the house of wickedness.

  242. Attention!

  243. Listen up!

  244. Hear the trumpet call.

  245. Let me show you what will happen

  246. when I withdraw my love from you.

  247. No one

  248. will be able to protect you, Israel.

  249. The Assyrians are going to come and invade.

  250. No one will be able to rescue you.

  251. In fact,

  252. it will be terrifying.

  253. And in a series of images,

  254. God explains what it will be like.

  255. This is how it will be

  256. when I withdraw my love from you.

  257. He says,

  258. it will be like a flood.

  259. Look at verse 10.

  260. Of course,

  261. this isn't just to Israel,

  262. the northern nation,

  263. but also to Judah,

  264. the southern nation,

  265. because they both

  266. had pushed God away.

  267. So verse 10,

  268. Judah's leaders are like

  269. those who move boundary stones.

  270. I will pour out my wrath in them

  271. like a flood of water.

  272. Because the leaders

  273. didn't deal with the sin,

  274. God responded in wrath.

  275. He says it's going to be

  276. like a dam that bursts

  277. and everything in its path

  278. will be swept away.

  279. Not only will it be a flood,

  280. it will be like a rot.

  281. Verse 11,

  282. Ephraim is oppressed,

  283. trampled in judgment,

  284. intent on pursuing

  285. their other lovers.

  286. I am like a moth to Ephraim,

  287. like rot to the people of Judah.

  288. Just like a rot will eat away,

  289. corroding and breaking,

  290. so God will come and destroy them.

  291. He goes on,

  292. he says it will be like a sickness.

  293. Verse 13,

  294. when Ephraim saw his sickness

  295. and Judah his sores,

  296. then Ephraim turned to Assyria

  297. and sent to the king for help,

  298. come and help us.

  299. But he is not able to cure you,

  300. not able to heal your sores.

  301. And so when God's judgment comes,

  302. it will be like a sickness or disease

  303. that they cannot cure.

  304. They'll turn to the other nations

  305. and to other people

  306. looking for their intervention and help,

  307. but they will not save.

  308. It'll be like a flood.

  309. It'll be like a rot.

  310. It'll be like sickness.

  311. Verse 14,

  312. it'll be like a lion.

  313. For I will be like a lion to Ephraim,

  314. like a great lion to Judah.

  315. I will tear them to pieces

  316. and go away.

  317. I will carry them off

  318. with no one to rescue them.

  319. Just like a lion hunting down

  320. its weakened prey,

  321. so God will come

  322. and nothing will be able

  323. to protect you, Israel.

  324. You see,

  325. when God withdraws his love,

  326. when he withdraws his hand

  327. that is upon his people,

  328. it's not freedom.

  329. It's terrifying.

  330. But notice how all this happens.

  331. This is deeply personal to God.

  332. Yes, he may use the Assyrian nation

  333. to come in upon Israel

  334. and Babylon,

  335. the nation that will come into Judah,

  336. but it's God

  337. who is behind this judgment.

  338. Look at verse 14 again.

  339. For I will be like a lion.

  340. I will tear them to pieces.

  341. I will carry them off.

  342. You see,

  343. God's wrath,

  344. his anger,

  345. is not some kind of

  346. uncontrollable temper.

  347. It's not a fit of rage.

  348. No, it's God's just,

  349. fair,

  350. and personal response

  351. to our persistent rejection

  352. of him.

  353. I remember meeting

  354. with a young couple,

  355. not in this church.

  356. They hadn't been married long

  357. and she had discovered

  358. that her new husband

  359. had been sleeping around.

  360. She sat on the couch,

  361. told her story.

  362. The tears flowed down her face.

  363. She was heartbroken.

  364. But they were also tears of anger

  365. and she had every right to be.

  366. He had broken the marriage,

  367. destroyed the trust,

  368. abused her love.

  369. And that's how it is with God.

  370. He is the faithful,

  371. loyal husband

  372. with tears in his eyes.

  373. But he's also the judge

  374. who will not put up

  375. with continued rebellion.

  376. You see,

  377. when there is no love for God,

  378. it doesn't mean

  379. that the world all now

  380. loves one another.

  381. When we don't love God,

  382. there is no love

  383. for others.

  384. Remember the evidence?

  385. Have a look back

  386. at chapter 4, verse 2.

  387. This was the evidence

  388. against God's people.

  389. Chapter 4, verse...

  390. Sorry,

  391. the end of verse 1

  392. of chapter 4.

  393. God says,

  394. there's no faithfulness,

  395. no love,

  396. no acknowledgement

  397. of God in the land.

  398. And in its place,

  399. there is only cursing,

  400. lying,

  401. and murder,

  402. and stealing,

  403. and adultery.

  404. They break all bounds,

  405. and bloodshed

  406. follows bloodshed.

  407. It's the picture

  408. of the world

  409. we live in today.

  410. Now,

  411. as God views

  412. all of this

  413. over the centuries,

  414. He doesn't sit there

  415. and say,

  416. you know what,

  417. it doesn't matter.

  418. Just continue

  419. to do what you like.

  420. Don't worry

  421. about all the abuse

  422. and the trafficking

  423. and the slavery.

  424. Don't bother

  425. about all the stealing

  426. and the lies

  427. and the harsh words.

  428. All the wars

  429. and all the violence,

  430. it doesn't matter.

  431. It does matter.

  432. This is personal

  433. to God

  434. because He is

  435. our Creator.

  436. He owns us.

  437. He rules us.

  438. He loves us.

  439. God is so patient,

  440. longing for us

  441. to return to Him,

  442. but He will not

  443. put up with it

  444. forever.

  445. To face

  446. an invading nation

  447. like Israel did

  448. is one thing.

  449. For us

  450. to stand

  451. face to face

  452. with our personal

  453. God as judge

  454. is another thing

  455. altogether.

  456. Jesus described

  457. that day

  458. like this.

  459. Speaking of Himself,

  460. when the Son of Man,

  461. the Son of Man

  462. is a title

  463. for the one

  464. with all power

  465. and supreme authority.

  466. When the Son of Man

  467. comes

  468. in His glory

  469. and all His angels

  470. with Him,

  471. He will sit

  472. on His throne

  473. in heavenly glory,

  474. all the nations,

  475. all the nations

  476. will be gathered

  477. before Him.

  478. And He will

  479. separate the people

  480. one from another

  481. as a shepherd

  482. separates the sheep

  483. from the goats.

  484. He will put the sheep

  485. to His right,

  486. the goats

  487. to His left.

  488. And He will say

  489. to those on His left,

  490. depart from Me,

  491. you are cursed,

  492. into the eternal fire

  493. prepared for the devil

  494. and His angels.

  495. Then they will go away

  496. to eternal punishment,

  497. but the righteous

  498. to eternal life.

  499. When God withdraws

  500. His love,

  501. it is not freedom.

  502. we face

  503. the terrifying

  504. prospect

  505. of an eternity

  506. in hell.

  507. But that's not

  508. the final verdict.

  509. There is a surprising

  510. statement

  511. of hope

  512. because God says,

  513. I will come

  514. and heal you.

  515. look at verse 15.

  516. Chapter 5,

  517. verse 15.

  518. God is saying,

  519. I will go back

  520. to my place

  521. until they admit

  522. their guilt

  523. and they will

  524. seek my faith.

  525. In their misery

  526. they will earnestly

  527. seek me.

  528. God's desire

  529. is that the judgment

  530. that He will bring

  531. upon His people

  532. is a form of discipline.

  533. He will withdraw

  534. His love

  535. only

  536. to cause His people

  537. to return

  538. in repentance

  539. to Him.

  540. For God

  541. longs

  542. to see the marriage

  543. restored.

  544. God

  545. will

  546. heal

  547. His people.

  548. There is

  549. a promised

  550. healing.

  551. Look at verse 1.

  552. Come,

  553. let us return

  554. to the Lord.

  555. He has torn

  556. us to pieces

  557. but He

  558. will heal us.

  559. He

  560. has injured

  561. us

  562. but He

  563. will bind

  564. up our wounds.

  565. It's a very

  566. strange tension.

  567. Did you read it?

  568. God is the one

  569. who tears

  570. to pieces.

  571. God is the one

  572. who injures

  573. only for God

  574. to heal

  575. and to bind

  576. up our wounds.

  577. Let me show you

  578. two ways

  579. God does this.

  580. First,

  581. and I want you

  582. to engage

  583. with this.

  584. Maybe you are

  585. going through

  586. a hard time

  587. right now.

  588. Life is

  589. difficult.

  590. Circumstances

  591. are painful.

  592. You might

  593. even describe

  594. it as being

  595. dark.

  596. It's like

  597. God has

  598. withdrawn

  599. His love

  600. from you.

  601. It can

  602. feel like

  603. God is

  604. even tearing

  605. you to pieces.

  606. You can

  607. feel crushed

  608. and broken.

  609. Have you

  610. ever felt

  611. like that?

  612. God has

  613. to

  614. God

  615. has

  616. allowed it

  617. not to

  618. get back

  619. at you

  620. but because

  621. He loves

  622. you.

  623. His wounds

  624. are not

  625. harsh

  626. and vindictive

  627. but to

  628. cause our

  629. hearts

  630. to turn

  631. to Him.

  632. the

  633. circumstances

  634. and the

  635. events

  636. that we

  637. go through

  638. may be

  639. painful

  640. but by

  641. trusting

  642. God

  643. they become

  644. loving wounds

  645. so that we

  646. in turn

  647. run

  648. to our

  649. healer.

  650. He has

  651. torn us

  652. to pieces

  653. but He

  654. will yet

  655. heal us.

  656. sometimes

  657. God

  658. has to

  659. draw us

  660. back to

  661. Himself

  662. because we're

  663. walking away

  664. and it's

  665. like a

  666. finger

  667. on our

  668. lives

  669. just a

  670. wound

  671. to say

  672. come back

  673. come back

  674. to me.

  675. Sometimes

  676. it can

  677. be simply

  678. that

  679. it's a

  680. way of

  681. God

  682. to draw

  683. us

  684. closer

  685. to Him

  686. in

  687. dependence

  688. upon

  689. Him

  690. not

  691. that

  692. we've

  693. done

  694. anything

  695. wrong

  696. but to

  697. grow our

  698. love

  699. our

  700. dependence

  701. upon

  702. Him.

  703. He

  704. injures

  705. us

  706. but He

  707. will bind

  708. up our

  709. wounds.

  710. Now I

  711. understand

  712. that that

  713. can be

  714. very hard

  715. for us

  716. to take

  717. in

  718. and you're

  719. thinking

  720. does He

  721. really

  722. injure

  723. us?

  724. does He

  725. really

  726. wound

  727. us?

  728. Well let

  729. me show

  730. you the

  731. second way

  732. God tears

  733. to heal.

  734. Remember

  735. the verdict

  736. we've just

  737. looked at?

  738. We all

  739. stand under

  740. the just

  741. judgment

  742. of God

  743. and when

  744. God's

  745. judgment

  746. comes

  747. it will

  748. be like

  749. being torn

  750. to pieces

  751. but here

  752. He's telling

  753. us that

  754. He will

  755. tear us

  756. to pieces

  757. us but

  758. at the

  759. same time

  760. heal us.

  761. How can

  762. He do

  763. that?

  764. Torn

  765. but healed

  766. injured

  767. but made

  768. well.

  769. The

  770. tension

  771. is resolved

  772. at the

  773. cross.

  774. You see

  775. at the

  776. cross we

  777. see God

  778. torn to

  779. pieces for

  780. us so

  781. that we

  782. can be

  783. healed.

  784. Peter

  785. explains it

  786. like this

  787. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2:24

  788. chapter 2

  789. verse 24

  790. says this

  791. He

  792. himself

  793. speaking of

  794. Jesus

  795. bore our

  796. sins in

  797. his body

  798. on the

  799. tree

  800. that we

  801. might die

  802. to sin

  803. and live

  804. for righteousness

  805. by his

  806. wounds

  807. you have

  808. been healed.

  809. Jesus

  810. stood in

  811. for us

  812. He took

  813. the judgment

  814. we deserve

  815. He is

  816. torn to

  817. pieces

  818. for us

  819. He suffers

  820. hell

  821. for us

  822. so that

  823. we might

  824. be forgiven

  825. that we

  826. might be

  827. bound up

  828. forgiven

  829. restored.

  830. Now let's

  831. put that

  832. all together.

  833. If God

  834. can be

  835. torn apart

  836. for you

  837. and for

  838. me

  839. if God

  840. is willing

  841. to put

  842. himself

  843. in that

  844. place

  845. where he

  846. is inflicted

  847. with the

  848. greatest

  849. wound

  850. possible

  851. hell

  852. itself

  853. if God

  854. will do

  855. that for

  856. you

  857. and for

  858. me

  859. then I

  860. can trust

  861. him

  862. with every

  863. other painful

  864. wound and

  865. trial that

  866. he allows

  867. into my

  868. life

  869. to draw

  870. me back

  871. to him

  872. to draw

  873. me closer

  874. to him.

  875. promised

  876. healing.

  877. But there

  878. is something

  879. even greater.

  880. Look at

  881. verse 2.

  882. After two

  883. days he

  884. will

  885. revive us.

  886. On the

  887. third day

  888. he will

  889. restore us

  890. that we

  891. may live

  892. in his

  893. presence.

  894. Hosea is

  895. hearing what

  896. God is saying.

  897. God had

  898. promised

  899. judgment

  900. upon his

  901. people but

  902. Hosea knew

  903. that God

  904. promised that

  905. he is going

  906. to revive

  907. them.

  908. Yes they

  909. would be

  910. cut down

  911. but only

  912. to be

  913. restored.

  914. Yes they

  915. would be

  916. crushed

  917. but only

  918. to be

  919. revived.

  920. It's like

  921. a promised

  922. resurrection.

  923. Look at

  924. verse 2.

  925. After two

  926. days he

  927. will revive

  928. us.

  929. On the

  930. third day

  931. he will

  932. restore us.

  933. Now I'm

  934. not suggesting

  935. Hosea had

  936. in mind

  937. the

  938. resurrection

  939. but Hosea

  940. knew full

  941. well that

  942. God had

  943. promised

  944. somehow

  945. that what

  946. he would

  947. tear down

  948. he could

  949. heal.

  950. What he

  951. could crush

  952. he could

  953. revive.

  954. Life that

  955. he could

  956. take

  957. he could

  958. restore.

  959. And that

  960. is what

  961. God has

  962. done for

  963. us.

  964. Jesus

  965. was torn

  966. to pieces

  967. on the

  968. cross for

  969. us.

  970. Three days

  971. later

  972. he rose

  973. again to

  974. life and

  975. walked out

  976. of that

  977. tomb.

  978. Look at

  979. the end

  980. of verse

  981. 2.

  982. That we

  983. may live

  984. in his

  985. presence.

  986. Jesus

  987. is the

  988. fulfilment

  989. of what

  990. Hosea

  991. longed

  992. for the

  993. people.

  994. Raised

  995. to life

  996. that people

  997. like you

  998. and me

  999. might enjoy

  1000. his presence

  1001. now and

  1002. forever so

  1003. that we

  1004. would never

  1005. ever ever

  1006. be separated

  1007. from his

  1008. love.

  1009. And know

  1010. his love

  1011. not just

  1012. today but

  1013. for an

  1014. eternity.

  1015. You see

  1016. this is our

  1017. story.

  1018. This is

  1019. my story.

  1020. This is

  1021. what God

  1022. can do

  1023. for us.

  1024. But how

  1025. do we

  1026. experience

  1027. this healing?

  1028. How can

  1029. I experience

  1030. it?

  1031. Well look

  1032. at verse

  1033. 1 of

  1034. chapter 6.

  1035. Come

  1036. let us

  1037. return to

  1038. the Lord.

  1039. Verse 3

  1040. let us

  1041. acknowledge

  1042. the Lord.

  1043. Let us

  1044. press on

  1045. and acknowledge

  1046. him.

  1047. Press on

  1048. pursue

  1049. God.

  1050. Chase

  1051. after

  1052. him.

  1053. Seek

  1054. him.

  1055. Long

  1056. for him.

  1057. Maybe

  1058. you've done

  1059. that with

  1060. a lover.

  1061. You've

  1062. known what

  1063. it is to

  1064. pursue

  1065. someone.

  1066. To chase

  1067. them.

  1068. To seek

  1069. for them.

  1070. Not to

  1071. give up.

  1072. To long

  1073. for them.

  1074. This is

  1075. what God

  1076. is calling

  1077. us to

  1078. do.

  1079. To get

  1080. real with

  1081. God.

  1082. To do

  1083. business

  1084. with God.

  1085. to wrestle

  1086. with him

  1087. in your

  1088. struggles.

  1089. To hear

  1090. his voice

  1091. speak to

  1092. you as

  1093. you read

  1094. the word.

  1095. To talk

  1096. to him

  1097. as you

  1098. cry out

  1099. in prayer.

  1100. To come

  1101. to him

  1102. in repentance.

  1103. To turn

  1104. back to

  1105. God and

  1106. say you

  1107. are the

  1108. source of

  1109. all my

  1110. joy and

  1111. all my

  1112. goodness.

  1113. To come

  1114. in faith

  1115. afresh

  1116. and trust

  1117. that nothing

  1118. else and

  1119. no one

  1120. else will

  1121. satisfy you

  1122. but God

  1123. alone.

  1124. And as

  1125. we turn

  1126. back to

  1127. Christ

  1128. and as

  1129. we press

  1130. on towards

  1131. Christ

  1132. look at the

  1133. rest of

  1134. verse 3

  1135. as surely

  1136. as the

  1137. sun rises

  1138. he will

  1139. appear.

  1140. Just as

  1141. we wait

  1142. for the

  1143. sunrise each

  1144. morning to

  1145. banish the

  1146. darkness so

  1147. God is

  1148. saying your

  1149. healing will

  1150. come.

  1151. The joy of

  1152. forgiveness will

  1153. be restored.

  1154. Our hearts

  1155. will sing as

  1156. we enjoy his

  1157. presence afresh.

  1158. The parched

  1159. barren wilderness

  1160. that we have

  1161. walked through

  1162. in this season

  1163. of life will

  1164. flourish and

  1165. bloom again.

  1166. Look at the

  1167. rest of verse

  1168. 3.

  1169. He will come

  1170. to us like

  1171. the winter

  1172. rains and

  1173. the spring

  1174. rains that

  1175. water

  1176. the earth.

  1177. I don't

  1178. know where

  1179. you are

  1180. today in

  1181. your

  1182. relationship

  1183. with the

  1184. Lord.

  1185. Whether

  1186. you've

  1187. wandered

  1188. away from

  1189. him as

  1190. the source

  1191. of all

  1192. joy and

  1193. goodness.

  1194. Or whether

  1195. you're

  1196. struggling to

  1197. trust him

  1198. that nothing

  1199. else and no

  1200. one else

  1201. will satisfy

  1202. but him

  1203. alone.

  1204. Well he

  1205. says come

  1206. back.

  1207. Come back

  1208. and experience

  1209. my healing.

  1210. Let the

  1211. rain of

  1212. my grace

  1213. fall upon

  1214. you and

  1215. where the

  1216. desert has

  1217. been barren

  1218. let it

  1219. bloom once

  1220. again.

  1221. But you

  1222. know what

  1223. the healing

  1224. that we can

  1225. experience right

  1226. now is

  1227. also only

  1228. partial.

  1229. It's not

  1230. complete.

  1231. the dark

  1232. clouds can

  1233. still weigh

  1234. heavy upon

  1235. us.

  1236. In a sense

  1237. there's always

  1238. going to be

  1239. those grey

  1240. clouds.

  1241. But one

  1242. day we

  1243. will experience

  1244. our full

  1245. and complete

  1246. healing just

  1247. as the sun

  1248. rises in the

  1249. morning as

  1250. sure as the

  1251. early morning

  1252. sun comes.

  1253. So Jesus

  1254. says one

  1255. day I

  1256. will come

  1257. and the

  1258. Lord Jesus

  1259. will appear

  1260. in the

  1261. heavens not

  1262. just to

  1263. bring

  1264. judgment

  1265. but for

  1266. his people

  1267. to bring

  1268. healing.

  1269. His light

  1270. will banish

  1271. the darkness

  1272. of all evil

  1273. and sin.

  1274. His rains

  1275. will fall

  1276. on the dry

  1277. broken and

  1278. cursed land

  1279. and it will

  1280. burst into

  1281. life.

  1282. And God's

  1283. people will

  1284. rejoice in

  1285. his presence

  1286. forever and

  1287. forever and

  1288. forever.

  1289. All suffering

  1290. will end.

  1291. Death will be

  1292. no more.

  1293. We will be

  1294. healed

  1295. at last.

  1296. The day

  1297. is coming.

  1298. His invitation

  1299. is for us

  1300. now.

  1301. Let the

  1302. grace of

  1303. God

  1304. reign upon

  1305. us and

  1306. experience

  1307. that reviving,

  1308. that healing

  1309. that he

  1310. alone can

  1311. bring.

  1312. Let's do

  1313. that right

  1314. now as

  1315. we pray.
