  1. I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them.

  2. I will be like the dew to Israel, he will blossom like a lily, like a cedar of Lebanon,

  3. he will send down his roots. His young shoots will grow, his splendor will be like an olive tree,

  4. his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.

  5. Men will dwell again in his shade, he will flourish like the corn,

  6. he will blossom like a vine, and his fame will be like the wine from Lebanon.

  7. O Ephraim, what more have I to do with idols? I will ask him and care for him,

  8. I am like a green pine tree, your fruitfulness comes from me.

  9. Who is wise? He will realize these things.

  10. Who is discerning? He will understand them.

  11. The ways of the Lord are right, the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.

  12. Thanks very much, Louise.

  13. Well, chapter 14 in some ways is like a summary, it's a conclusion, a wrap-up of the whole message of Hosea.

  14. So as we come to God's Word, let's pray.

  15. Let's ask that the Lord would help us, not only to understand with our minds,

  16. but that we would feel within our hearts, and that God would change us through his Word today.

  17. So let's pray for that.

  18. Father, thank you for this message of Hosea.

  19. A message that speaks to us today.

  20. And Father, our prayer is that you would not only enable us to understand with our heads intellectually,

  21. but that we would sense it, feel it, experience your work deep within our hearts,

  22. so that we are changed,

  23. we are transformed,

  24. and that we become

  25. the people that you call us to be.

  26. Father, do your work amongst us today.

  27. And for your glory we pray this,

  28. and for our good, in Jesus' name.

  29. Amen.

  30. Together, they stood at the front of the church.

  31. It wasn't their first time.

  32. Almost five years ago to the day,

  33. they had stood in exactly the same place,

  34. promising to love each other until death us do part.

  35. Friends and family had all gathered together to join in their special day,

  36. no expense was spared,

  37. the finest of food,

  38. the luxurious surroundings,

  39. but their marriage celebration was short-lived.

  40. Within a few weeks,

  41. she had had an affair with a colleague at work

  42. and had walked out of the marriage.

  43. But today was a new day,

  44. a fresh start.

  45. In love,

  46. he had reached out to his unfaithful wife

  47. and proposed to her again.

  48. And there they stood in the front of the church,

  49. ready to renew their vows.

  50. But that's what we have in chapter 14.

  51. Here God is reaching out to his unfaithful people,

  52. calling them to himself.

  53. Renew your marriage vows with me.

  54. Look at verse 4.

  55. God promises,

  56. I will heal their waywardness

  57. and love them freely,

  58. for my anger has turned away from them.

  59. You remember that Hosea has been a story

  60. about God's marriage to his people.

  61. God's people had been an adulterous wife.

  62. They had chased after other lovers,

  63. replacing God with other things and other people.

  64. And God couldn't ignore their behaviour.

  65. He was jealous for his people.

  66. He loved them.

  67. And he couldn't let them carry on the way they were.

  68. So God had promised to bring his judgment upon them.

  69. The threat of the Assyrian nation would come upon them.

  70. But God was not about to give up on his people either.

  71. He pursued them.

  72. In love, God reached out to them

  73. and gives them that opportunity

  74. to come to him afresh

  75. to renew those marriage vows.

  76. And that is what God is offering to us today.

  77. Because in a sense, we are no different.

  78. We are the adulterous people.

  79. We've rejected his unfaithful love.

  80. We've resisted his kind and generous rule.

  81. We've provoked God's anger.

  82. And he has promised to come in terrible judgment.

  83. But like a broken-hearted husband

  84. who refuses to give up on his adulterous wife,

  85. so God has passionately pursued us.

  86. In love, God reaches out to us today

  87. and gives us that opportunity

  88. to renew our marriage vows.

  89. So today, this moment,

  90. imagine yourself standing

  91. at the front of the church.

  92. As it were, if you were renewing those vows,

  93. a new beginning.

  94. Maybe you've never experienced

  95. a relationship with God.

  96. You've never known that intimacy

  97. with God as father

  98. and a faithful, loyal husband.

  99. Well, today, you can.

  100. Or perhaps your relationship with God

  101. has just grown cold.

  102. You've lost that sense of intimacy.

  103. It's a closed relationship

  104. and you no longer experience his love.

  105. Well, today, you can.

  106. Because chapter 14 gives us that opportunity

  107. to come and meet with God

  108. and renew those marriage vows.

  109. So what will this marriage blessing look like?

  110. Well, let's look at it in two ways.

  111. First, it's a call to return

  112. to our true love.

  113. Look at verse 1.

  114. Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God.

  115. Verse 2.

  116. Take words with you

  117. and return to the Lord.

  118. This calling of return

  119. is a call to daily repentance.

  120. I'm sure as you've been to weddings,

  121. you'll hear these vows.

  122. The husband is asked this question.

  123. Will you love her?

  124. Comfort her?

  125. Honor and keep her

  126. in sickness and in health?

  127. And forsaking all others,

  128. keep yourself only for her.

  129. Forsake all others,

  130. keep yourself only for her

  131. as long as you both shall live.

  132. Well, that's what God is seeking

  133. as he's calling his people

  134. to return to him.

  135. Forsake all other loves

  136. and keep yourself only for him.

  137. Now, before we look at how we do that,

  138. this returning,

  139. this repenting,

  140. we need to identify

  141. what those other loves are

  142. that we have.

  143. And to help us to identify,

  144. I'm going to ask us all

  145. just two very simple questions.

  146. So I want us to think through

  147. what is your answer

  148. to these questions.

  149. Here's the first one.

  150. What do I turn to

  151. for my comfort and pleasure?

  152. In life,

  153. what do I turn to

  154. for my comfort and pleasure?

  155. Maybe it's work.

  156. Maybe it's shopping.

  157. Maybe it's porn.

  158. Maybe it's some substance abuse.

  159. What do you turn to

  160. for your comfort and pleasure?

  161. Here's the second question.

  162. What do I look to

  163. for my joy and happiness?

  164. Or sorry,

  165. who do I look to

  166. for my joy and happiness?

  167. Who are the people

  168. that I treasure most

  169. that I want

  170. for my joy and happiness?

  171. Well, whatever your answer

  172. to those questions,

  173. these can become

  174. our substitute loves.

  175. We replace God

  176. with these other loves.

  177. and our calling today

  178. is to return

  179. to our one true love.

  180. Here's how we do that

  181. in three steps.

  182. Here's the first one.

  183. Take responsibility

  184. for my sin.

  185. Look at verse one again.

  186. Return, O Israel,

  187. to the Lord your God.

  188. your sins

  189. have been

  190. your downfall.

  191. The reason that Israel

  192. had run away from God

  193. was not because God

  194. had failed them.

  195. It was because

  196. they had eyes

  197. for other lovers.

  198. God had been faithful

  199. and loyal

  200. and generous

  201. and trustworthy

  202. and kind.

  203. So the only reason

  204. why they turned

  205. from God,

  206. well, it was because

  207. of their own sinful hearts.

  208. And that's what we do.

  209. We look away

  210. from the source

  211. of our true love.

  212. We have eyes

  213. for other loves

  214. and put our hope

  215. in other things.

  216. And that's not God's fault

  217. or anybody else's fault.

  218. We can't point the finger

  219. at somebody else.

  220. It's my fault.

  221. It's not my upbringing.

  222. It's not where I live

  223. or what's happened.

  224. If we turn away from God,

  225. if we look to other things,

  226. it's our own fault.

  227. It's my responsibility.

  228. And I must learn

  229. to take ownership

  230. of my sin.

  231. Look what it says

  232. at the end of verse one.

  233. Your sins

  234. have been

  235. your downfall.

  236. So the first step

  237. in returning

  238. to our true love

  239. is to take responsibility

  240. for my sin.

  241. The second is this.

  242. Seek forgiveness

  243. for my sin.

  244. Look at verse two.

  245. Take words with you

  246. and return to the Lord.

  247. Say to him,

  248. forgive all our sins

  249. and receive us

  250. and receive us graciously.

  251. God isn't asking

  252. his people

  253. to do anything.

  254. He's not asking them

  255. to prove their love

  256. or to pass a test.

  257. No, it's a simple call

  258. to come with words

  259. from the heart

  260. seeking forgiveness.

  261. forgiveness.

  262. This is how our relationship

  263. with God starts

  264. and it's how our relationship

  265. with God continues.

  266. It's so simple.

  267. Forgive all our sins

  268. and receive us graciously.

  269. You see,

  270. there is nothing

  271. too bad

  272. or so terrible

  273. that God cannot forgive.

  274. Maybe you're sitting there

  275. and thinking

  276. that if you only knew

  277. what was going on

  278. in my life

  279. or the things I've done

  280. or what's going on

  281. in my life right now,

  282. there's no way

  283. God could forgive me.

  284. Well, hear this invitation

  285. from our true love

  286. to experience forgiveness.

  287. Say to him,

  288. forgive all my sin

  289. and receive me graciously.

  290. In fact,

  291. the words of repentance

  292. are like our sacrifice.

  293. It's like an offering.

  294. Look at the end of verse 2.

  295. Receive us graciously

  296. that we may offer

  297. the fruit of our lips.

  298. The fruit of our lips,

  299. the words that we speak to God.

  300. This is our offering.

  301. This is our sacrifice to God.

  302. King David understood this

  303. when he sought forgiveness

  304. for his adultery.

  305. Psalm 51 records for us

  306. as he comes to God.

  307. This is what he says.

  308. You do not delight in sacrifice

  309. or I would bring it.

  310. You don't take pleasure

  311. in burnt offerings.

  312. The sacrifices of God

  313. are a broken spirit,

  314. a broken and contrite heart,

  315. O God,

  316. you will not despise.

  317. So God is not looking

  318. for your track record today.

  319. He's not looking at the list

  320. of all the things you've done

  321. to prove your love.

  322. He's simply looking

  323. for a broken and contrite heart.

  324. The invitation to us all today

  325. is come with these words.

  326. Forgive all my sin

  327. and receive us graciously.

  328. So,

  329. as we return to the Lord,

  330. take responsibility for my sin,

  331. seek forgiveness for my sin,

  332. and third,

  333. renew trust

  334. in my Saviour.

  335. Look at verse 3.

  336. Assyria

  337. cannot save us.

  338. We will not mount war horses.

  339. We will never again say,

  340. Our gods,

  341. to what our own hands have made.

  342. You see,

  343. God's people

  344. in their spiritual adultery,

  345. as they look to other loves,

  346. they look to other nations,

  347. like Assyria,

  348. to their own military power.

  349. this was going to be their Saviour.

  350. They replaced God

  351. with other nations

  352. and with horses

  353. and with their armies.

  354. We don't need God.

  355. We can live life without Him,

  356. they said.

  357. We can get our safety

  358. and our security

  359. from other things.

  360. And we're no different.

  361. We substitute God

  362. with our work,

  363. our money,

  364. our material possessions

  365. and think,

  366. Well, if I can have that,

  367. then I will be okay.

  368. We replace God

  369. with our children,

  370. our spouse,

  371. our loved ones

  372. and we think,

  373. If I can have this

  374. or if I can have that

  375. in my life,

  376. then I will be secure.

  377. Then I will be satisfied.

  378. Everything will be alright.

  379. But the gods of our making

  380. can never save you.

  381. Israel would discover that.

  382. Assyria wouldn't save them,

  383. they would destroy them.

  384. And that's what will happen to us.

  385. The gods that we make,

  386. the middle of verse 3,

  387. that we have made

  388. with our own hands,

  389. our own thinking,

  390. they will just demand more of you,

  391. they will break you.

  392. But our saving God,

  393. He is the God

  394. who comes to give to you.

  395. Look at the end of verse 3.

  396. For in you,

  397. in God,

  398. the fatherless find compassion.

  399. To run from God

  400. is to become fatherless.

  401. To run away,

  402. to turn away from God

  403. is to be without hope,

  404. without a saviour.

  405. But to return to God,

  406. to renew our trust in Him,

  407. we find our true saviour.

  408. We find a God

  409. who gives His life for us.

  410. A God who will die for you.

  411. A saviour who will never fail you

  412. or trick you

  413. or disown you.

  414. This is what it means

  415. to return to the Lord your God.

  416. It's this daily discipline

  417. of repentance.

  418. Of taking responsibility

  419. for my sin.

  420. Seeking forgiveness

  421. for my sin.

  422. And renewing trust

  423. in my saviour.

  424. As we come to our God

  425. to renew those vows,

  426. it starts with our returning

  427. to Him.

  428. The second thing

  429. that we need to see

  430. as we come to renew

  431. our vows

  432. is that we can have

  433. our relationship

  434. with Him restored,

  435. restored with our true love.

  436. And as we return

  437. to our true love,

  438. God promises us

  439. three things.

  440. I want us to grasp

  441. these three promises

  442. that God brings

  443. to our life

  444. as we return

  445. to Him.

  446. Here's the first one.

  447. Healing

  448. from our past.

  449. Look at verse 4.

  450. Here's God

  451. speaking

  452. to His people

  453. as we return

  454. to Him.

  455. First He says,

  456. I will heal

  457. their waywardness

  458. and love them freely

  459. for my anger

  460. has turned away

  461. from them.

  462. You know,

  463. one of the reasons

  464. why we don't turn

  465. back to God

  466. is because of fear.

  467. We fear that

  468. if we come back

  469. to God,

  470. He's going to punish me

  471. for my past.

  472. He's going to have

  473. a list of all the things

  474. I've done wrong

  475. and He's going to punish me.

  476. But look what it says.

  477. Look at the end

  478. of verse 4.

  479. He says,

  480. My anger

  481. has turned away

  482. from them.

  483. Of course,

  484. Hosea was speaking

  485. of something

  486. much greater

  487. that was to come.

  488. An experience

  489. that we can have

  490. for ourselves

  491. as we trust

  492. in the death

  493. of Jesus Christ

  494. on the cross.

  495. You see,

  496. the punishment

  497. that we deserve

  498. for turning away

  499. from God

  500. is now turned

  501. away from us

  502. and turned

  503. onto

  504. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  505. God's wrath

  506. for my sin

  507. has turned away

  508. from me

  509. and has now

  510. fallen upon

  511. the Lord Jesus.

  512. So when we come

  513. to Him

  514. with our past,

  515. when we come

  516. to Him

  517. with our lives,

  518. we no longer

  519. have to fear

  520. coming to Him

  521. because He

  522. has dealt

  523. with our sin.

  524. He has dealt

  525. with it

  526. in Jesus.

  527. In fact,

  528. He says to us

  529. beginning of verse 4,

  530. I will heal

  531. their waywardness.

  532. I will heal

  533. all their

  534. turning away

  535. and I will

  536. love them

  537. freely.

  538. So hear

  539. this promise

  540. to us today.

  541. in Jesus,

  542. in Jesus,

  543. your past

  544. has been

  545. dealt with.

  546. The barrier

  547. of sin

  548. is completely

  549. removed.

  550. There is now

  551. no condemnation.

  552. You can come

  553. freely to God

  554. and enjoy

  555. the love

  556. of God

  557. because

  558. He has healed

  559. your past.

  560. but it

  561. gets even

  562. better

  563. than that.

  564. Here is the

  565. second promise.

  566. A flourishing

  567. relationship.

  568. Look at verse 5.

  569. God says,

  570. I will be like

  571. the dew

  572. to Israel.

  573. He will

  574. blossom

  575. like a lily.

  576. Verse 7,

  577. men will

  578. dwell again

  579. in His shade.

  580. He will

  581. flourish

  582. like the corn.

  583. He will

  584. blossom

  585. like a vine.

  586. The picture

  587. is clear

  588. here.

  589. It is a picture

  590. of a parched

  591. dry land.

  592. It is barren.

  593. Nothing grows.

  594. But then

  595. verse 5,

  596. the morning

  597. dew

  598. comes

  599. that

  600. drenches

  601. and soaks

  602. that dry

  603. land

  604. and gives

  605. the plants

  606. its vital

  607. moisture

  608. and everything

  609. that is

  610. necessary

  611. for it

  612. to begin

  613. to blossom

  614. and flourish.

  615. And so

  616. as the dew

  617. falls,

  618. the lilies,

  619. the corn,

  620. the vines,

  621. it all

  622. begins to

  623. blossom.

  624. It begins

  625. to fulfil

  626. its purpose.

  627. And that's

  628. the picture

  629. for us.

  630. As we

  631. return to

  632. the Lord,

  633. as we

  634. trust in

  635. our true

  636. Saviour,

  637. as we

  638. turn away

  639. from our

  640. false loves

  641. on a daily

  642. basis,

  643. so we

  644. begin to

  645. experience

  646. His grace.

  647. His grace

  648. falls upon

  649. us like

  650. the morning

  651. dew.

  652. It

  653. drenches

  654. our lives,

  655. it soaks

  656. our lives

  657. so that

  658. we begin

  659. to flourish.

  660. We become

  661. the people

  662. that God

  663. calls us

  664. to be.

  665. In fact,

  666. we will

  667. grow strong

  668. and mature.

  669. Look at

  670. the rest

  671. of verse

  672. 5.

  673. We will

  674. become like

  675. a cedar

  676. of Lebanon.

  677. He will

  678. send down

  679. His roots,

  680. His young

  681. shoots will

  682. grow,

  683. His splendour

  684. will be

  685. like an

  686. olive tree,

  687. His fragrance

  688. like a

  689. cedar of

  690. Lebanon.

  691. The cedars

  692. of Lebanon

  693. are known

  694. for their

  695. strength

  696. and durability,

  697. their strong

  698. roots enabling

  699. them to stand

  700. strong and

  701. to grow.

  702. Well,

  703. here's this

  704. amazing promise.

  705. As we

  706. return to

  707. our true

  708. love,

  709. as we

  710. put down

  711. our deep

  712. roots,

  713. as we

  714. invest time

  715. with God

  716. in our

  717. relationship

  718. with Him,

  719. listening to

  720. His words,

  721. speaking to

  722. Him in

  723. prayer,

  724. joining

  725. together with

  726. one another

  727. as we're

  728. doing now,

  729. so we

  730. become strong

  731. and healthy

  732. in our

  733. marriage with

  734. God.

  735. We will

  736. have roots

  737. that will

  738. hold us

  739. fast,

  740. so that

  741. when the

  742. trials test

  743. us,

  744. when the

  745. temptations

  746. begin to

  747. lure us

  748. away,

  749. when the

  750. troubles come

  751. and they

  752. bring doubt

  753. to our

  754. lives,

  755. we will

  756. not move

  757. and we

  758. will be

  759. strong and

  760. mature.

  761. Our

  762. relationship

  763. with God

  764. will flourish

  765. and blossom.

  766. So not

  767. only do we

  768. have healing

  769. from our

  770. past,

  771. not only is

  772. our life

  773. going to

  774. flourish,

  775. but look

  776. at this

  777. third promise,

  778. there will

  779. be fruitfulness

  780. in our

  781. life.

  782. Look at

  783. verse 8.

  784. O Ephraim,

  785. which was

  786. another name

  787. for God's

  788. people,

  789. what more

  790. have I to

  791. do with

  792. idols,

  793. or what

  794. more has

  795. Ephraim

  796. got to

  797. do with

  798. idols?

  799. Our

  800. idols,

  801. the gods

  802. that we

  803. make,

  804. are false,

  805. they're made

  806. up,

  807. they give

  808. us nothing,

  809. they leave

  810. us empty,

  811. they leave

  812. us dry,

  813. they don't

  814. satisfy.

  815. But God

  816. says,

  817. verse 8,

  818. I will

  819. answer him

  820. and care

  821. for him.

  822. I am

  823. like a

  824. green pine

  825. tree,

  826. your

  827. fruitfulness

  828. comes

  829. from

  830. me.

  831. Instead

  832. of looking

  833. to our

  834. false gods,

  835. our idols,

  836. we are to

  837. look to the

  838. true source

  839. of our

  840. love,

  841. who is

  842. God.

  843. And God

  844. promises us

  845. a fruitful

  846. life,

  847. just as the

  848. pine tree

  849. is the

  850. source of

  851. its fruit,

  852. it brings

  853. about the

  854. cones on

  855. the tree,

  856. so God

  857. is the

  858. source for

  859. a fruitful

  860. life for

  861. us.

  862. Look back

  863. at verse 5,

  864. the end

  865. of verse 5,

  866. it says,

  867. like the

  868. cedar of

  869. Lebanon,

  870. he will

  871. send down

  872. his roots

  873. and his

  874. young shoots

  875. will grow.

  876. if we

  877. send down

  878. those roots

  879. deep into

  880. the source

  881. who is

  882. God,

  883. so we

  884. will become

  885. fruitful.

  886. The

  887. imagery

  888. is not

  889. unlike what

  890. Jesus spoke

  891. to his

  892. own

  893. disciples

  894. in John

    John 15 chapter mention

  895. chapter 15.

  896. Keep your

  897. finger in

  898. Hosea and

  899. jump to

  900. John

    John 15 chapter mention

  901. chapter 15.

  902. John

    John 15 chapter mention

  903. chapter 15

  904. and verse 5.

  905. So we're

  906. thinking here

  907. of roots,

  908. we're

  909. thinking of

  910. being tied

  911. in to

  912. the Lord,

  913. and from

  914. that comes

  915. a flourishing

  916. relationship

  917. and a

  918. fruitful

  919. life.

  920. So,

  921. as Jesus

  922. speaks,

  923. chapter 15

  924. verse 5,

  925. he says,

  926. I am the

  927. vine,

  928. you are

  929. the branches.

  930. If a

  931. man or

  932. woman remains

  933. in me

  934. and I

  935. in him,

  936. you will

  937. bear much

  938. fruit.

  939. Apart

  940. from me,

  941. you can

  942. do

  943. nothing.

  944. If anyone

  945. does not

  946. remain in

  947. me,

  948. they are

  949. like a

  950. branch that

  951. is thrown

  952. away and

  953. withers.

  954. Such branches

  955. are picked

  956. up and

  957. thrown into

  958. the fire

  959. and burned.

  960. If you

  961. remain in

  962. me,

  963. and my

  964. words remain

  965. in you,

  966. ask whatever

  967. you wish,

  968. and it will

  969. be given

  970. you.

  971. God,

  972. give me a

  973. new car

  974. or provide

  975. for me a

  976. new house

  977. or give

  978. me better

  979. health.

  980. That's not

  981. the kind of

  982. fruit that is

  983. being promised

  984. or talked

  985. about here.

  986. It's the

  987. fruit that

  988. comes from

  989. a relationship

  990. with God

  991. that's nurtured

  992. and nourished.

  993. look at the

  994. beginning of

  995. verse 7.

  996. It says,

  997. if you

  998. remain in

  999. me and

  1000. my words

  1001. remain in

  1002. you,

  1003. so this

  1004. is about

  1005. remaining in

  1006. and abiding

  1007. in his

  1008. word.

  1009. That is the

  1010. nourishment and

  1011. the source for

  1012. fruitfulness.

  1013. And the

  1014. kind of

  1015. fruit that

  1016. we can

  1017. expect,

  1018. well,

  1019. freedom from

  1020. guilt and

  1021. shame,

  1022. grace when

  1023. we feel

  1024. weak and

  1025. low,

  1026. joy in

  1027. times of

  1028. struggle and

  1029. suffering,

  1030. assurance when

  1031. we are afraid

  1032. and in

  1033. doubt,

  1034. peace in

  1035. times of

  1036. trouble and

  1037. trials,

  1038. comfort when

  1039. we lose a

  1040. loved one,

  1041. hope when

  1042. facing death,

  1043. eternal life

  1044. when Christ

  1045. comes again.

  1046. Verse 8,

  1047. this is to

  1048. my Father's

  1049. glory that

  1050. you bear

  1051. much fruit,

  1052. showing

  1053. yourselves to

  1054. be my

  1055. disciples.

  1056. This is

  1057. the fruit

  1058. that is

  1059. promised when

  1060. we return to

  1061. the source of

  1062. all life as

  1063. we put down

  1064. our roots

  1065. deep down

  1066. into God's

  1067. word and

  1068. soak up that

  1069. nourishment.

  1070. So we

  1071. produce a

  1072. fruitful life,

  1073. freedom and

  1074. grace and

  1075. joy and

  1076. assurance and

  1077. peace and

  1078. comfort and

  1079. hope.

  1080. That is the

  1081. promise that

  1082. God gives to

  1083. you today.

  1084. we'll turn

  1085. back to

  1086. Hosea.

  1087. As we've

  1088. seen throughout

  1089. the book of

  1090. Hosea, we

  1091. have all

  1092. broken our

  1093. marriage vows

  1094. with God.

  1095. And the

  1096. problem is

  1097. we all do

  1098. it on a

  1099. daily basis.

  1100. well today,

  1101. this moment,

  1102. as we sit

  1103. and hear

  1104. God's

  1105. word,

  1106. it provides

  1107. us with a

  1108. fresh start,

  1109. a new

  1110. beginning,

  1111. right now.

  1112. Look at

  1113. verse 9.

  1114. Who is

  1115. wise?

  1116. He will

  1117. realise these

  1118. things.

  1119. Who is

  1120. discerning?

  1121. they will

  1122. understand them.

  1123. The wise

  1124. and discerning

  1125. person not

  1126. only hears

  1127. God's offer

  1128. and these

  1129. promises,

  1130. but they

  1131. put God's

  1132. word into

  1133. practice.

  1134. James reminds

  1135. us in the

  1136. New Testament,

  1137. do not merely

  1138. listen to

  1139. the word,

  1140. and so

  1141. deceive

  1142. yourselves.

  1143. Do what

  1144. it says.

  1145. If we are

  1146. to experience

  1147. a fresh start

  1148. with God,

  1149. if we are

  1150. going to

  1151. enjoy the

  1152. intimacy with

  1153. him afresh,

  1154. if we are

  1155. going to

  1156. know these

  1157. promises in

  1158. our life,

  1159. then we

  1160. must apply

  1161. chapter 14

  1162. to our

  1163. life.

  1164. We have

  1165. got to

  1166. put it

  1167. into

  1168. practice.

  1169. Look at

  1170. the rest

  1171. of verse 9.

  1172. The ways

  1173. of the

  1174. Lord are

  1175. right.

  1176. The righteous

  1177. walk in

  1178. them,

  1179. but the

  1180. rebellious

  1181. stumble in

  1182. them.

  1183. Here's the

  1184. call to

  1185. walk in

  1186. the ways

  1187. of the

  1188. Lord.

  1189. What's

  1190. that going

  1191. to look

  1192. like for

  1193. you and

  1194. for me?

  1195. Tomorrow

  1196. morning,

  1197. tonight,

  1198. during the

  1199. week,

  1200. what's it

  1201. going to

  1202. look like

  1203. to walk

  1204. in the

  1205. ways of

  1206. the Lord?

  1207. Well,

  1208. it's to

  1209. simply do

  1210. what chapter

  1211. 14 is

  1212. telling us

  1213. to do.

  1214. When we

  1215. fail and

  1216. fall,

  1217. rather than

  1218. run from

  1219. the Lord

  1220. in fear,

  1221. we are

  1222. to return

  1223. to the

  1224. Lord.

  1225. Return to

  1226. him with

  1227. words,

  1228. verse 2,

  1229. forgive all

  1230. my sin

  1231. and receive

  1232. us graciously.

  1233. Come with

  1234. that absolute

  1235. confidence and

  1236. assurance that

  1237. Jesus took

  1238. upon himself

  1239. all our

  1240. acts of

  1241. spiritual

  1242. adultery and

  1243. paid for the

  1244. penalty on

  1245. the cross and

  1246. has now

  1247. covered us in

  1248. his purity so

  1249. that we can

  1250. be welcomed

  1251. in forever.

  1252. He heals

  1253. our waywardness,

  1254. loves us

  1255. freely,

  1256. for my

  1257. anger has

  1258. turned away

  1259. from you.

  1260. Renew

  1261. your trust

  1262. in the

  1263. one true

  1264. Saviour,

  1265. Jesus Christ.

  1266. Receive

  1267. these rich

  1268. promises.

  1269. Live in

  1270. the knowledge

  1271. that your

  1272. past has

  1273. been healed.

  1274. Enjoy a

  1275. flourishing

  1276. relationship

  1277. with God.

  1278. Experience

  1279. fruitfulness

  1280. in your

  1281. life.

  1282. Let's

  1283. pray for

  1284. God to

  1285. do that

  1286. work in

  1287. our life

  1288. today,

  1289. right now.

  1290. Let's

  1291. pray.

  1292. Amen.

  1293. Amen.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.

  1298. Amen.

  1299. Amen.

  1300. Amen.

  1301. Amen.

  1302. Amen.

  1303. Amen.

  1304. Amen.

  1305. Amen.

  1306. Amen.

  1307. Amen.

  1308. Amen.

  1309. Amen.

  1310. Amen.

  1311. Amen.

  1312. Heaven.

  1313. He is wise,
