    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  3. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of,

  4. because you know those from whom you learned it,

  5. and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures,

  6. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  7. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

  8. so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  9. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead,

  10. and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge.

  11. Preach the word and be prepared in season and out of season.

  12. Correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction.

  13. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.

  14. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers

  15. to say what their itching ears want to hear.

  16. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

  17. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship,

  18. do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

  19. Thanks very much, Chris.

  20. Well, let's pray together.

  21. The Lord says,

  22. These are the ones I look on with favour,

  23. those who are humble and contrite in spirit

  24. and who tremble at my word.

  25. Father, we come to you in humility,

  26. with a contrite spirit.

  27. We place ourselves under your authority,

  28. asking that your word and your truth

  29. would shape us,

  30. mould us,

  31. change us,

  32. as a church

  33. and as a people.

  34. Father, may that very word that

  35. brought life into existence

  36. be that same word

  37. that speaks to our hearts and lives today,

  38. bringing life

  39. and bringing truth.

  40. Father,

  41. Father, without you

  42. and without you speaking,

  43. we are lost.

  44. we need you.

  45. We need your help.

  46. Thank you for your word

  47. and for its truth to us today.

  48. In Jesus' name.

  49. Amen.

  50. Well, I was thinking during the week

  51. that it would be great

  52. to have a new church building.

  53. Controversial, I know,

  54. but hey,

  55. wouldn't it be nice?

  56. Not just a smaller version

  57. of this community centre,

  58. but a modern,

  59. state-of-the-art building.

  60. The problem is

  61. we don't have any money.

  62. So that got me thinking some more.

  63. So here's my idea

  64. I want to put to you.

  65. For a small fee,

  66. let's say 250 euro per person

  67. and at a bargain,

  68. 500 euro per family,

  69. we're going to offer

  70. to look after any births,

  71. deaths and marriages.

  72. So if there's anybody

  73. in the community out there

  74. who's unsure

  75. about what they believe

  76. and just want to cover their bases

  77. in case,

  78. just in case,

  79. there is a God,

  80. we will baptise,

  81. we will bury,

  82. and we will bless.

  83. Or hatch, match and dispatch,

  84. as they say.

  85. For a modest payment,

  86. we will assure them of salvation.

  87. They mightn't understand

  88. what they do,

  89. but we can say,

  90. it's all right,

  91. we have you covered.

  92. And we can even put an announcement

  93. in the local newspaper.

  94. Carragoline Baptist Church,

  95. we have your life covered.

  96. So what do you think?

  97. Well, I hope you would say

  98. something like this.

  99. Johnny, you really can't do that

  100. because that's not what the Bible says.

  101. Salvation is a free gift from God,

  102. received by faith in Jesus Christ.

  103. Well, if you think my idea

  104. is a little bit far-fetched,

  105. come with me back 500 years

  106. to the established church in Europe.

  107. And something similar was happening.

  108. They needed a new church building.

  109. So the Pope at the time,

  110. Leo X,

  111. came up with this ingenious plan.

  112. They were going to sell indulgences

  113. or pardons

  114. to the local people.

  115. Because at that time,

  116. most people believed in a place

  117. called purgatory.

  118. It was kind of an in-between

  119. heaven and earth.

  120. It's a place of torment.

  121. A place where people went

  122. when they died.

  123. It's not in the Bible,

  124. but nevertheless,

  125. this is what the church taught.

  126. And here people would go

  127. and they would have to work off

  128. all their sins

  129. before moving off into heaven.

  130. It was kind of a middle stage.

  131. And this was the genius of the idea.

  132. By selling these indulgences

  133. or pardons

  134. and people buying them

  135. with their hard-earned money,

  136. the Pope was giving them off

  137. time off purgatory.

  138. He was basically accelerating

  139. the place from earth

  140. when you died

  141. to heaven.

  142. For a very small fee,

  143. salvation was being guaranteed

  144. to the people.

  145. You could buy it

  146. with money.

  147. Now, at the same time,

  148. there was a young German monk,

  149. you may have heard of this guy,

  150. called Martin Luther.

  151. And he was teaching

  152. in one of the church's seminaries.

  153. He was an up-and-coming theologian.

  154. And he was serious

  155. about reading the Bible.

  156. And as he began

  157. to lecture his students,

  158. he was teaching through Psalms

  159. and then Romans

  160. and then Galatians,

  161. he discovered something

  162. the church had never,

  163. ever taught him.

  164. In fact,

  165. he was discovering

  166. that what the church taught

  167. wasn't what the Bible said.

  168. And he came to understand

  169. some really core truths.

  170. They weren't new,

  171. but they were rediscovered truths

  172. from the Bible.

  173. They could be summarised

  174. like this.

  175. That salvation

  176. is according to Scripture alone,

  177. in Christ alone,

  178. by grace alone,

  179. so it's a free gift,

  180. through faith alone,

  181. so not something we work for,

  182. but trust in Christ,

  183. for the glory of God alone.

  184. So filled with this passion

  185. for this rediscovered truth

  186. and a concern

  187. for all these people

  188. who were being led astray.

  189. Martin Luther went down

  190. to his local church

  191. and he nailed up

  192. or stuck up

  193. on the church door

  194. 95 theses

  195. or, if you like,

  196. 95 mini-statements

  197. about the truth

  198. of the Gospel.

  199. Because the local church door

  200. was like your town notice board.

  201. It's where people went

  202. to find out

  203. what was going on

  204. and what was happening.

  205. And his aim was

  206. to challenge the church

  207. and the leaders of the church

  208. to get back

  209. to the central truth

  210. of the Bible.

  211. And this great event,

  212. which will be celebrated

  213. in October of this year,

  214. 500 years,

  215. has become known

  216. as the Reformation.

  217. Because

  218. it was a desire

  219. to reform the church

  220. in line

  221. with the teaching

  222. of Scripture.

  223. Now we may be sitting here

  224. and thinking

  225. 500 years ago,

  226. I hate history.

  227. And that was

  228. an awful long time ago.

  229. I sympathise with you.

  230. I sat through

  231. history classes in school

  232. and I did not like it.

  233. But,

  234. there's lots

  235. that we can learn from it.

  236. And in one sense,

  237. 500 years later,

  238. we are still

  239. to be

  240. reformers.

  241. So I want us

  242. to think of ourselves

  243. as being reformers.

  244. As we go back

  245. to the Bible,

  246. we are always

  247. being reformed.

  248. We are being shaped

  249. and changed

  250. by what the Bible

  251. teaches.

  252. Or to put it

  253. another way,

  254. if we as a church

  255. are to go forward,

  256. if we're to be

  257. the kind of church

  258. that God calls us to be,

  259. if we're to be

  260. the kind of Christians

  261. God wants us to be,

  262. we are to first

  263. go back to Scripture.

  264. We must take

  265. one step back

  266. to Scripture

  267. to be able

  268. to take

  269. steps forward.

  270. You see,

  271. what Martin Luther

  272. had rediscovered

  273. was not new.

  274. And his desire

  275. to get back

  276. to the Bible

  277. was not new.

  278. It was something

  279. that the Apostle Paul

  280. took seriously

  281. and encouraged

  282. his fellow servant

  283. Timothy to do.

  284. So have a look

  285. in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  286. chapter 3

  287. and verse 14.

  288. 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:14

  289. verse 14.

  290. Verse 14,

  291. but as for you,

  292. so the Apostle Paul

  293. here is writing

  294. to this young pastor

  295. called Timothy.

  296. He's somewhere

  297. about 16 or 18.

  298. and he was pastor

  299. or one of the elders

  300. of a church

  301. in Ephesus,

  302. a very,

  303. very young man.

  304. And he's been given

  305. this responsibility

  306. of taking care

  307. of the church.

  308. Paul is nearing

  309. the end of his life

  310. and so he's passing on

  311. and he's encouraging

  312. to Timothy

  313. to start his ministry

  314. and to continue

  315. his ministry

  316. by getting back

  317. to Scripture.

  318. So let's read

  319. verse 14.

  320. But as for you,

  321. Timothy,

  322. continue in what

  323. you have learned

  324. and have become

  325. convinced of

  326. because you know

  327. from those

  328. from whom

  329. you've learned it.

  330. So what has

  331. Timothy been learning?

  332. Well, look at verse 15.

  333. How from infancy,

  334. from a little child,

  335. you have known

  336. the Holy Scriptures.

  337. Timothy,

  338. you've started

  339. with the Scriptures.

  340. Chapter 1 tells us

  341. that it was his mother

  342. and grandmother

  343. that took the time

  344. to teach

  345. their young Timothy

  346. and that's an encouragement

  347. for us as parents

  348. if we've got children

  349. to be investing

  350. at the very early stages

  351. and teaching them

  352. the good news

  353. of God's Word.

  354. So he started

  355. with this knowledge

  356. of the Scriptures

  357. and Paul is now saying

  358. continue on.

  359. Make the Bible

  360. central to your life

  361. and to your teaching

  362. and the reason

  363. look down at

  364. chapter 4 verse 3.

  365. For the time

  366. will come

  367. when men

  368. will not put up

  369. with sound doctrine,

  370. they'll not put up

  371. with the truth

  372. of what Scripture teaches.

  373. Instead,

  374. to suit their own desires,

  375. they will gather

  376. round them

  377. a great number

  378. of teachers

  379. to say what

  380. their itching ears

  381. want to hear.

  382. So people

  383. don't want to hear

  384. what the Bible

  385. has to say

  386. but they want to hear

  387. what they want to hear.

  388. Verse 4,

  389. they will turn

  390. their ears away

  391. from the truth

  392. and turn aside

  393. to myths.

  394. You see,

  395. just as there was

  396. in the time

  397. of Timothy,

  398. just as there was

  399. 500 years ago

  400. and it's still

  401. the same today,

  402. there will always

  403. be those

  404. who come to the church

  405. who will wander

  406. away from

  407. the truth of Scripture

  408. and lead

  409. other people

  410. away from

  411. the message

  412. of the Bible.

  413. They move away

  414. from God's revelation

  415. to man-made

  416. tradition

  417. and our job

  418. like a Timothy

  419. or a Martin Luther

  420. is to get back

  421. to what the Bible

  422. teaches.

  423. You see,

  424. one of the most

  425. important questions

  426. we could always

  427. be asking ourselves

  428. is this,

  429. what does

  430. the Bible

  431. say?

  432. How are we

  433. made right

  434. with God?

  435. Well,

  436. what does

  437. the Bible

  438. say?

  439. What should

  440. the church

  441. teach?

  442. What should

  443. we be doing

  444. as a church?

  445. Well,

  446. what does

  447. the Bible

  448. say?

  449. How are we

  450. to live as

  451. Christians

  452. in the world?

  453. Well,

  454. what does

  455. the Bible

  456. teach?

  457. What determines

  458. my decision-making?

  459. What kind

  460. of church

  461. should I

  462. go to?

  463. Well,

  464. what does

  465. the Bible

  466. say?

  467. It's not

  468. important

  469. what I

  470. think

  471. or what

  472. you think

  473. or what

  474. anybody else

  475. has to say,

  476. but what

  477. does

  478. Scripture

  479. have to

  480. say?

  481. What does

  482. it teach

  483. us?

  484. When

  485. Martin Luther

  486. was challenged

  487. and questioned

  488. about these

  489. rediscovered

  490. views,

  491. these truths

  492. about salvation

  493. and Scripture,

  494. he said

  495. this,

  496. your

  497. imperial

  498. majesty

  499. and your

  500. lordship

  501. demand a

  502. simple

  503. answer.

  504. Here it

  505. is,

  506. plain and

  507. straight.

  508. Unless I

  509. am convicted

  510. of error

  511. by the

  512. Scriptures,

  513. I cannot

  514. and will

  515. not recant

  516. anything.

  517. On this

  518. I take

  519. my stand.

  520. I can

  521. do no

  522. other.

  523. God

  524. help me.

  525. So he

  526. took his

  527. stand on

  528. Scripture

  529. alone and

  530. everything

  531. was lived

  532. and practiced

  533. under that.

  534. So Scripture

  535. alone is

  536. where we

  537. must begin

  538. and where

  539. we must

  540. continue.

  541. There's three

  542. things we

  543. want to learn

  544. about Scripture

  545. and why

  546. it is so

  547. central and

  548. so important

  549. to us.

  550. First,

  551. the source

  552. of Scripture.

  553. We start

  554. with Scripture

  555. because its

  556. origin or

  557. its source

  558. is not

  559. man or

  560. a church

  561. but God

  562. himself.

  563. So look

  564. at verse

  565. 16.

  566. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:16

  567. chapter 3

  568. verse 16.

  569. There's a

  570. little phrase

  571. there.

  572. It says

  573. all Scripture

  574. is God

  575. breathed.

  576. Now all

  577. Scripture

  578. implies both

  579. the Old

  580. Testament

  581. and the

  582. New

  583. Testament.

  584. So when

  585. we're talking

  586. of Scripture

  587. think old

  588. and new.

  589. Let me give

  590. you an example

  591. of this.

  592. If you just

  593. go back a

  594. couple of

  595. pages to

  596. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5:17

  597. chapter 5

  598. verse 17.

  599. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5:17

  600. chapter 5

  601. verse 17.

  602. So he's

  603. giving instructions

  604. to Timothy

  605. about elders.

  606. So chapter

  607. 3 he's been

  608. talking to the

  609. elders, the

  610. leaders of

  611. the church.

  612. And one of

  613. the primary

  614. roles of an

  615. elder, he

  616. tells us in

  617. chapter 3, is

  618. that they must

  619. be able to

  620. teach.

  621. They must be

  622. able to teach

  623. God's word

  624. and apply

  625. God's word.

  626. And here he

  627. says something

  628. else.

  629. Chapter 5

  630. verse 17.

  631. The elders

  632. who direct

  633. the affairs

  634. of the church

  635. so they give

  636. direction through

  637. the word.

  638. He says they

  639. are worthy

  640. of double

  641. honour,

  642. especially those

  643. whose work

  644. is preaching

  645. and teaching.

  646. And now he

  647. wants to back

  648. up what he's

  649. saying.

  650. Verse 18.

  651. For the

  652. scripture says

  653. do not

  654. muzzle the

  655. ox while it's

  656. treading out

  657. the grain,

  658. which is a

  659. quote from

  660. Deuteronomy,

  661. the Old

  662. Testament.

  663. So if the

  664. donkey or

  665. the horse

  666. or the ox

  667. gets some

  668. food,

  669. well then so

  670. should those

  671. who are doing

  672. the work of

  673. teaching.

  674. And then he

  675. says the

  676. worker deserves

  677. his wages,

  678. which is a

  679. quote from

  680. Luke's gospel,

  681. which is in

  682. the New

  683. Testament.

  684. So can you

  685. see what Paul

  686. is doing?

  687. He's making

  688. a case and

  689. to make his

  690. case he refers

  691. to both the

  692. Old Testament

  693. and the New

  694. Testament and

  695. he calls them

  696. the scriptures.

  697. So when we're

  698. talking about

  699. scriptures,

  700. we're talking

  701. about everything

  702. that's in the

  703. Old Testament

  704. and everything

  705. that's in the

  706. New Testament

  707. from Genesis

  708. to Revelation,

  709. the whole

  710. Bible.

  711. It's this book

  712. that we're

  713. looking at right

  714. now, nothing

  715. more and

  716. nothing less.

  717. And that must

  718. remain central

  719. to the life

  720. of the church.

  721. So all of

  722. scripture, we

  723. don't pick the

  724. pieces that we

  725. want and the

  726. bits we don't

  727. like we leave to

  728. one side.

  729. We don't go,

  730. oh well this is

  731. what Jesus said,

  732. I can deal with

  733. that, but Paul

  734. said that so I

  735. don't listen to

  736. Paul because I

  737. don't like Paul.

  738. No, all of

  739. scripture, everything

  740. together is God's

  741. word because it

  742. is, secondly, God

  743. breathed.

  744. So go back to

  745. 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:16

  746. verse 16.

  747. It says that all

  748. scripture is God

  749. breathed.

  750. Now God

  751. breathed is a

  752. technical term

  753. and it's really

  754. important that we

  755. understand it.

  756. It simply means

  757. that the words,

  758. the Bible,

  759. originates in

  760. the mind of

  761. God.

  762. So every word

  763. written in the

  764. Bible has been

  765. chosen or has

  766. been inspired by

  767. God.

  768. So the Bible is

  769. not man's

  770. invention, it's

  771. not the church's

  772. idea, but it is

  773. God's revealed

  774. truth to us.

  775. Again, if we

  776. go forward just

  777. a few pages to

  778. 2 Peter, so

  779. Hebrews after

  780. Timothy, Hebrews

  781. James, well

  782. there's a

  783. Titus in there

  784. as well, Titus,

  785. Hebrews, James

  786. and then 1

  787. Peter, 2

    2 Peter 1:20

  788. Peter chapter

  789. 1 verse 20.

  790. 2 Peter chapter

    2 Peter 1:20

  791. 1 verse 20.

  792. So we're

  793. thinking about

  794. what it is to

  795. be God

  796. breathed, that

  797. God's word

  798. originates in

  799. the mind of

  800. God, not in

  801. somebody's ideas.

  802. So 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1:20

  803. chapter 1

  804. verse 20.

  805. So Peter is

  806. writing, he

  807. says, above

  808. all you must

  809. understand that

  810. no prophecy of

  811. scripture came

  812. about by the

  813. prophet's own

  814. interpretation.

  815. For prophecy

  816. never had its

  817. origin in the

  818. will of man,

  819. but men spoke

  820. from God as

  821. they were carried

  822. along by the

  823. Holy Spirit.

  824. So what the

  825. authors had to

  826. say, the

  827. authors of

  828. scripture, it

  829. isn't their own

  830. ideas, their own

  831. imagination, but

  832. if you look at the

  833. end of verse 21,

  834. men spoke from

  835. God as they

  836. were carried

  837. along by the

  838. Holy Spirit.

  839. So as the

  840. work of God's

  841. Spirit was in

  842. their lives, so

  843. they began to

  844. write what God

  845. called them to

  846. write.

  847. Now another

  848. person who's

  849. just died

  850. recently, a few

  851. years ago, John

  852. Stott, explained

  853. it like this, which

  854. I think is very

  855. helpful.

  856. He said, God

  857. spoke his

  858. words through

  859. their words, using

  860. their different

  861. personalities and

  862. style in such a

  863. way that their

  864. words were

  865. simultaneously his.

  866. So God didn't

  867. just dictate

  868. mechanically and

  869. go write this

  870. and then say a

  871. whole load of

  872. things and they

  873. just wrote down

  874. word for word,

  875. but God used

  876. their personalities.

  877. That's why when

  878. we read Paul, he

  879. writes in a

  880. different way.

  881. Peter writes in

  882. a different way.

  883. Moses writes in

  884. a different way.

  885. God used their

  886. different personalities

  887. and style, but

  888. yet their words

  889. were at the same

  890. time God's

  891. words.

  892. So we start

  893. with Scripture

  894. because the

  895. source of

  896. Scripture originates

  897. in the mind of

  898. God and it's

  899. for us today.

  900. The second

  901. reason why we

  902. need Scripture

  903. is its purpose.

  904. And again, we

  905. see two things

  906. here.

  907. The purpose of

  908. Scripture first

  909. is it leads to

  910. our salvation.

  911. So go back to

  912. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  913. chapter 3

  914. and verse

  915. 15.

  916. Back to

  917. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:15

  918. 3 verse

  919. 15.

  920. So he says

  921. there, how

  922. from infancy

  923. you have

  924. known the

  925. Holy Scriptures

  926. which are

  927. able to

  928. make you

  929. wise for

  930. salvation

  931. through

  932. faith in

  933. Christ Jesus.

  934. So it

  935. leads people

  936. to salvation.

  937. If you

  938. were to

  939. summarize the

  940. whole of the

  941. Bible in

  942. one word,

  943. what would

  944. you use?

  945. If you

  946. were to

  947. summarize the

  948. whole Bible

  949. in one

  950. word,

  951. you ever

  952. thought what

  953. you would

  954. say?

  955. Well, I

  956. think salvation

  957. would be a

  958. good word

  959. because the

  960. whole of

  961. Scripture from

  962. beginning to

  963. end is God's

  964. unfolding plan,

  965. his true

  966. story to

  967. save us

  968. from the

  969. judgment that

  970. we deserve.

  971. The Bible

  972. tells us the

  973. story of what

  974. we're like,

  975. that God

  976. made us,

  977. that he

  978. loves us,

  979. that he

  980. rules over

  981. us, but

  982. we rebelled

  983. against him,

  984. we turned

  985. against God,

  986. we sinned,

  987. just like

  988. Adam and

  989. Eve, we've

  990. turned away

  991. from God,

  992. and we

  993. need saved

  994. from God's

  995. judgment,

  996. from his

  997. wrath, and

  998. that salvation

  999. comes not

  1000. through our

  1001. own efforts,

  1002. not by the

  1003. things I can

  1004. do, but

  1005. through the

  1006. person of

  1007. Jesus Christ.

  1008. So it

  1009. says in

  1010. verse 15,

  1011. the

  1012. scriptures

  1013. which are

  1014. able to

  1015. make you

  1016. wise for

  1017. salvation

  1018. through

  1019. faith in

  1020. Christ Jesus.

  1021. So as we

  1022. read and

  1023. listen to

  1024. scripture, it

  1025. makes us

  1026. wise for

  1027. salvation, it

  1028. shows us our

  1029. need to be

  1030. saved.

  1031. Scripture

  1032. itself doesn't

  1033. save me, so

  1034. if I read

  1035. the Bible, it's

  1036. not going to

  1037. save me by

  1038. itself.

  1039. Rather, the

  1040. scriptures

  1041. open up my

  1042. eyes to help

  1043. me see the

  1044. need for

  1045. Jesus.

  1046. It brings me

  1047. back to who

  1048. Jesus is and

  1049. shows me that

  1050. Jesus died for

  1051. me on the

  1052. cross, that he

  1053. rose again from

  1054. the grave, defeating

  1055. death, and as

  1056. we trust in the

  1057. person of Jesus, we

  1058. are saved.

1059. As it says at the

  1060. end of verse 15,

  1061. for salvation

  1062. comes through

  1063. faith in

  1064. Christ Jesus.

  1065. It's by trusting

  1066. in him.

  1067. Let me quote

  1068. again, this

  1069. time from a

  1070. living author.

  1071. Tim Keller

  1072. explains it like

  1073. this, which I

  1074. think is very,

  1075. very helpful.

  1076. The Bible, he

  1077. says, then is

  1078. not a collection

  1079. of fables or

  1080. fictional stories

  1081. that give us

  1082. insights on how

  1083. to find God

  1084. and live right.

  1085. Rather, it is

  1086. both true

  1087. history and a

  1088. unified story

  1089. about how God

  1090. came to find

  1091. us in the

  1092. person of Jesus

  1093. Christ, who

  1094. died in our

  1095. place so that

  1096. we could be

  1097. saved by grace

  1098. through faith

  1099. and live with

  1100. him forever in

  1101. a remade world,

  1102. the garden city

  1103. of God.

  1104. The Bible is

  1105. not primarily

  1106. about us and

  1107. what we should

  1108. do.

  1109. It is first and

  1110. foremost about

  1111. Jesus and what

  1112. he has done.

  1113. So as we read

  1114. through Scripture,

  1115. we discover that

  1116. God's great plan,

  1117. it's all about

  1118. pointing us to

  1119. Jesus Christ and

  1120. how he can save

  1121. us and how he

  1122. changes us.

  1123. So the first

  1124. purpose of

  1125. Scripture is to

  1126. bring us to

  1127. Jesus who can

  1128. save us.

  1129. The second

  1130. purpose of

  1131. Scripture is

  1132. for our

  1133. sanctification.

  1134. Sanctification is

  1135. just simply a

  1136. word to describe

  1137. God's ongoing

  1138. work in our

  1139. lives to mature

  1140. us and to

  1141. grow us in

  1142. our Christian

  1143. faith.

  1144. And the way

  1145. that God does

  1146. this is through

  1147. Scripture,

  1148. through the

  1149. Bible.

  1150. So again,

  1151. look at

  1152. verse 16.

  1153. All Scripture

  1154. is God

  1155. breathed,

  1156. so it has

  1157. its origin in

  1158. God and it's

  1159. for us,

  1160. and it is

  1161. useful for

  1162. teaching,

  1163. rebuking,

  1164. correcting,

  1165. and training in

  1166. righteousness.

  1167. us.

  1168. So as we

  1169. come to

  1170. God's Word,

  1171. we are to

  1172. let God's

  1173. Word filter

  1174. into our

  1175. minds.

  1176. We're to let

  1177. it have an

  1178. effect in

  1179. us.

  1180. Because the

  1181. more we read

  1182. God's Word,

  1183. the more we

  1184. listen to it,

  1185. as we are

  1186. told that we

  1187. are taught by

  1188. it.

  1189. We're taught

  1190. more about

  1191. who God is,

  1192. who Christ

  1193. is, who

  1194. the Spirit

  1195. is.

  1196. We learn

  1197. more about

  1198. God, and

  1199. how we

  1200. should relate

  1201. to Him.

  1202. But we're

  1203. also rebuked

  1204. by it,

  1205. verse 16.

  1206. So as I

  1207. begin to

  1208. read the

  1209. Bible and

  1210. listen to

  1211. it, then

  1212. it shows me

  1213. the areas

  1214. in my life

  1215. that need

  1216. to be

  1217. changed,

  1218. the areas

  1219. that don't

  1220. fall in

  1221. line with

  1222. God's

  1223. way.

  1224. And unless

  1225. I read

  1226. it, I'm

  1227. not going

  1228. to know

  1229. that I

  1230. need to

  1231. change.

  1232. It doesn't

  1233. just rebuke

  1234. us, but

  1235. it corrects

  1236. us.

  1237. So it

  1238. shows us

  1239. the area

  1240. we need

  1241. to change,

  1242. but it

  1243. also

  1244. corrects.

  1245. It shows

  1246. us how

  1247. we can

  1248. be changed.

  1249. It actually

  1250. shows me

  1251. how I can

  1252. change to

  1253. be more

  1254. like Jesus

  1255. through acts

  1256. of repentance

  1257. and faith

  1258. and meeting

  1259. together with

  1260. one another

  1261. and through

  1262. prayer.

  1263. But it

  1264. doesn't just

  1265. correct me,

  1266. it trains

  1267. me, trains

  1268. in righteousness,

  1269. builds up my

  1270. understanding of

  1271. the Bible so

  1272. I can teach

  1273. and encourage

  1274. others.

  1275. But that's

  1276. not just the

  1277. job of the

  1278. pastor or

  1279. the elder.

  1280. Each one

  1281. of us should

  1282. be trained

  1283. up so that

  1284. we can teach

  1285. and encourage

  1286. others.

  1287. And the

  1288. whole purpose

  1289. for all of

  1290. this, look

  1291. at verse

  1292. 17, so

  1293. that the man

  1294. of God and

  1295. the woman of

  1296. God may be

  1297. thoroughly

  1298. equipped for

  1299. every good

  1300. work.

  1301. You see,

  1302. scripture is

  1303. the nutrients,

  1304. the energy

  1305. that we

  1306. need to

  1307. keep on

  1308. growing as

  1309. a Christian.

  1310. Yesterday, I

  1311. had a great

  1312. day where I

  1313. went walking

  1314. up Caron

  1315. 2 and

  1316. along the

  1317. way I

  1318. needed to

  1319. drink, as

  1320. everybody does.

  1321. If we don't

  1322. drink, you

  1323. run out of

  1324. water and you

  1325. have no energy

  1326. and you can't

  1327. do anything.

  1328. Well, imagine

  1329. trying to

  1330. climb a

  1331. mountain without

  1332. any water.

  1333. Or imagine

  1334. trying to live

  1335. just a few

  1336. days without

  1337. water.

  1338. You'd maybe

  1339. last, at

  1340. best, two,

  1341. three days

  1342. maximum.

  1343. But then what

  1344. happens without

  1345. water?

  1346. Your organs

  1347. begin to fail.

  1348. They dry up,

  1349. they shrivel

  1350. up, and they

  1351. stop functioning.

  1352. And then you

  1353. die very, very

  1354. slowly.

  1355. But you do

  1356. die.

  1357. And the

  1358. same is true

  1359. that if we

  1360. don't drink

  1361. in God's

  1362. word, if

  1363. we're not

  1364. being immersed

  1365. in God's

  1366. word, then

  1367. the same

  1368. effects will

  1369. happen to us

  1370. spiritually.

  1371. We will

  1372. never mature.

  1373. We will

  1374. never grow.

  1375. We will

  1376. never become

  1377. the people

  1378. God calls

  1379. us to be.

  1380. We will

  1381. slowly die

  1382. as a

  1383. Christian.

  1384. So let

  1385. me ask the

  1386. question.

  1387. Are we

  1388. people who

  1389. are being

  1390. immersed in

  1391. God's word?

  1392. When was

  1393. the last

  1394. time that

  1395. you opened

  1396. up the

  1397. Bible to

  1398. read it

  1399. for yourself?

  1400. to hear God

  1401. speaking to

  1402. you?

  1403. How he

  1404. can change

  1405. you?

  1406. How he

  1407. can shape

  1408. you?

  1409. How he

  1410. can build

  1411. you up?

  1412. If you

  1413. find reading

  1414. difficult,

  1415. when was

  1416. the last

  1417. time you

  1418. heard it

  1419. on audio?

  1420. Just hearing

  1421. what God

  1422. is saying

  1423. to us.

  1424. Without

  1425. it, we

  1426. die.

  1427. We never

  1428. grow, we

  1429. never mature.

  1430. We're

  1431. just like

  1432. little

  1433. toddlers,

  1434. never being

  1435. the people

  1436. God calls

  1437. us to

  1438. be.

  1439. So God

  1440. gives us

  1441. the gift

  1442. of his

  1443. word to

  1444. bring us,

  1445. to make

  1446. us aware

  1447. of our

  1448. need of

  1449. salvation,

  1450. to bring

  1451. us to

  1452. Christ.

  1453. But not

  1454. just to

  1455. bring us

  1456. to Christ,

  1457. to grow

  1458. us to be

  1459. more like

  1460. Christ.

  1461. And he

  1462. does that

  1463. through his

  1464. word.

  1465. So, if

  1466. we have

  1467. the source

  1468. of

  1469. scripture,

  1470. which is

  1471. God, the

  1472. purpose,

  1473. which is

  1474. for our

  1475. salvation and

  1476. our

  1477. sanctification,

  1478. what's our

  1479. response to

  1480. scripture?

  1481. How should

  1482. we be

  1483. responding as

  1484. God's people

  1485. to his

  1486. word?

  1487. Well, let

  1488. me give

  1489. you three

  1490. areas that

  1491. I think it

  1492. should really

  1493. affect us and

  1494. shape us as

  1495. a church and

  1496. as individuals.

  1497. First, in

  1498. the area of

  1499. authority.

  1500. Scripture alone

  1501. doesn't mean

  1502. that we can't

  1503. read other

  1504. people's

  1505. writings.

  1506. We've already

  1507. listened to

  1508. some of them

  1509. today by

  1510. listening to

  1511. what Martin

  1512. Luther said

  1513. or John

  1514. Stott or

  1515. Tim Keller.

  1516. It doesn't

  1517. mean that we

  1518. can't read

  1519. what anybody

  1520. else says.

  1521. It doesn't

  1522. mean to say

  1523. we can't

  1524. listen to

  1525. other preachers

  1526. or teachers

  1527. or have

  1528. our own

  1529. opinions.

  1530. It simply

  1531. means that

  1532. everything we

  1533. listen to,

  1534. everything that

  1535. we read,

  1536. must come

  1537. under the

  1538. authority of

  1539. scripture.

  1540. In other

  1541. words, what

  1542. we teach as

  1543. a church,

  1544. what we

  1545. practice as

  1546. a church,

  1547. must be

  1548. ruled by

  1549. scripture.

  1550. And the

  1551. problem at

  1552. the time of

  1553. the Reformation

  1554. 500 years

  1555. ago was the

  1556. church as

  1557. an institution

  1558. had become

  1559. the authority.

  1560. authority.

  1561. So what

  1562. the church

  1563. leader said

  1564. was equal

  1565. in authority

  1566. to what

  1567. scripture said.

  1568. So if the

  1569. church leader

  1570. said this,

  1571. well it was

  1572. to be taken

  1573. as if God

  1574. had spoken.

  1575. They didn't

  1576. submit themselves

  1577. to God's

  1578. word.

  1579. Rather the

  1580. people had to

  1581. submit to

  1582. man's word.

  1583. They followed

  1584. tradition

  1585. instead of

  1586. God's

  1587. revelation.

  1588. revelation.

  1589. And the

  1590. same kind

  1591. of things

  1592. can happen

  1593. to us

  1594. today if

  1595. we are not

  1596. careful.

  1597. It's not

  1598. only wrong

  1599. to do it

  1600. but it's

  1601. extremely

  1602. dangerous

  1603. because it

  1604. leads people

  1605. away from

  1606. Christ and

  1607. away from

  1608. God's

  1609. truth.

  1610. We don't

  1611. want to be

  1612. following

  1613. man-made

  1614. traditions.

  1615. We want

  1616. to follow

  1617. God's

  1618. revelation.

  1619. That is

  1620. our authority.

  1621. And this

  1622. was something

  1623. that Timothy

  1624. had to watch

  1625. out for.

  1626. If you go

  1627. back to

  1628. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 2:17

  1629. chapter 2

  1630. verse 17

  1631. as Paul

  1632. is writing

  1633. to this

  1634. young

  1635. pastor

  1636. leader

  1637. he's

  1638. encouraging

  1639. him to

  1640. get back

  1641. to scripture

  1642. and to be

  1643. aware that

  1644. there will

  1645. be those

  1646. who go

  1647. away from

  1648. scripture.

  1649. So verse

  1650. 17 he

  1651. says their

  1652. teaching

  1653. will spread

  1654. like gangrene.

  1655. It's

  1656. infectious.

  1657. It's

  1658. poisonous.

  1659. It's going

  1660. to do

  1661. damage to

  1662. people.

  1663. Among

  1664. them

  1665. were

  1666. Hymenaeus

  1667. and

  1668. Philetus.

  1669. Two

  1670. people who

  1671. were in

  1672. the church

  1673. who were

  1674. teaching

  1675. things they

  1676. ought not

  1677. to.

  1678. Verse

  1679. 18 they

  1680. wandered

  1681. away from

  1682. the truth.

  1683. They were

  1684. teaching

  1685. traditions

  1686. rather than

  1687. God's

  1688. revelation.

  1689. So as

  1690. a church

  1691. we need

  1692. to seek

  1693. to submit

  1694. to God's

  1695. authority.

  1696. Everything

  1697. we say

  1698. everything

  1699. we do

  1700. must come

  1701. under

  1702. God's

  1703. word.

  1704. So it's

  1705. not the

  1706. authority

  1707. of the

  1708. pastor.

  1709. It's

  1710. not the

  1711. authority

  1712. of our

  1713. statement

  1714. of belief.

  1715. It's

  1716. not the

  1717. authority

  1718. of our

  1719. church

  1720. constitution

  1721. and all

  1722. those things

  1723. may be

  1724. good and

  1725. proper but

  1726. everything

  1727. must come

  1728. under the

  1729. authority of

  1730. scripture.

  1731. So let me

  1732. challenge you

  1733. and encourage

  1734. you.

  1735. As you

  1736. listen to

  1737. me or to

  1738. whoever else

  1739. may be

  1740. preaching,

  1741. as you

  1742. observe what

  1743. we practice

  1744. and what we

  1745. do as a

  1746. church,

  1747. do you

  1748. just listen

  1749. and go

  1750. yeah that's

  1751. fine,

  1752. oh we'll

  1753. do this,

  1754. that's fine.

  1755. How do

  1756. you know

  1757. it's fine?

  1758. You might

  1759. be listening

  1760. here right

  1761. now and

  1762. you haven't

  1763. even got a

  1764. Bible with

  1765. you and

  1766. you're

  1767. thinking oh

  1768. yeah except

  1769. that,

  1770. how do

  1771. you know?

  1772. How do

  1773. you know

  1774. it's true?

  1775. It's your

  1776. job,

  1777. your

  1778. responsibility,

  1779. your role

  1780. to look to

  1781. scripture and

  1782. say is this

  1783. what the

  1784. Bible says?

  1785. Is what we

  1786. are practicing

  1787. what the

  1788. Bible teaches?

  1789. So first,

  1790. it must be

  1791. our authority.

  1792. Second,

  1793. it's sufficient.

  1794. Scripture,

  1795. the Bible,

  1796. is God's

  1797. revelation of

  1798. himself.

  1799. This is how

  1800. we get to

  1801. know God

  1802. because God

  1803. has revealed

  1804. himself to

  1805. us through

  1806. his word

  1807. and it's

  1808. complete.

  1809. Everything that

  1810. God has to

  1811. say about

  1812. us today

  1813. is in

  1814. God's

  1815. word.

  1816. It's

  1817. complete.

  1818. It's

  1819. sufficient.

  1820. God didn't

  1821. leave us

  1822. speculating

  1823. about what

  1824. we should

  1825. believe or

  1826. how we

  1827. should behave

  1828. as Christians.

  1829. It is a

  1830. clear word

  1831. to us

  1832. today.

  1833. That means

  1834. we don't

  1835. need a

  1836. further word

  1837. or we don't

  1838. need more

  1839. revelation.

  1840. We don't

  1841. need somebody

  1842. writing in

  1843. new books

  1844. or coming

  1845. up with

  1846. new ideas

  1847. and say,

  1848. did you

  1849. know this

  1850. about God?

  1851. You never

  1852. heard about

  1853. this.

  1854. No,

  1855. what we

  1856. have in

  1857. God's

  1858. word is

  1859. sufficient.

  1860. John

  1861. Calvin was

  1862. another man

  1863. similar to

  1864. Martin Luther

  1865. who was

  1866. seeking to

  1867. reform the

  1868. church, to

  1869. bring it

  1870. back to

  1871. scripture.

  1872. He was

  1873. working in

  1874. France and

  1875. he stood

  1876. against those

  1877. who sought

  1878. to add to

  1879. scripture.

  1880. And this is

  1881. what he said,

  1882. which I think

  1883. is helpful.

  1884. let this

  1885. then be a

  1886. sure axiom.

  1887. Let this

  1888. be the

  1889. standard by

  1890. which we

  1891. measure

  1892. everything.

  1893. That nothing

  1894. ought to be

  1895. admitted in

  1896. the church

  1897. as the

  1898. word of

  1899. God,

  1900. save that

  1901. which is

  1902. contained

  1903. first in

  1904. the law

  1905. and the

  1906. prophets,

  1907. which refers

  1908. to the

  1909. Old

  1910. Testament,

  1911. and secondly

  1912. to the

  1913. writings of

  1914. the ten

  1915. apostles,

  1916. which refers

  1917. to the

  1918. authors of

  1919. the New

  1920. Testament.

  1921. And that

  1922. there be

  1923. no other

  1924. method of

  1925. teaching in

  1926. the church

  1927. than according

  1928. to the

  1929. prescribed rule

  1930. of his

  1931. word.

  1932. And that

  1933. message is

  1934. the same

  1935. message for

  1936. us today.

  1937. We shouldn't

  1938. allow in any

  1939. other teaching

  1940. or any

  1941. other ideas

  1942. except that

  1943. which is

  1944. contained within

  1945. scripture.

  1946. Now today

  1947. you might go

  1948. to some

  1949. churches and

  1950. they'll say

  1951. things,

  1952. well,

  1953. we have

  1954. the Bible,

  1955. but that's

  1956. not enough,

  1957. that's not

  1958. sufficient.

  1959. There's still

  1960. more things

  1961. we need to

  1962. hear from

  1963. God.

  1964. So they'll

  1965. say something

  1966. like this,

  1967. God told

  1968. me,

  1969. or God

  1970. has said.

  1971. So rather

  1972. than rely on

  1973. what God

  1974. has said

  1975. about himself

  1976. in the

  1977. Bible,

  1978. people depend

  1979. on their

  1980. own thoughts

  1981. and imaginations.

  1982. Because the

  1983. only way that

  1984. we can know

  1985. if God

  1986. has told us

  1987. anything and

  1988. we can be

  1989. sure that

  1990. it's God

  1991. speaking to

  1992. us,

  1993. is what

  1994. God has

  1995. already said

  1996. in scripture.

  1997. This is what

  1998. Timothy,

  1999. again,

  2000. was told to

  2001. look out

  2002. for.

  2003. Go back

  2004. to chapter

  2005. 4,

  2006. verse 3.

  2007. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 4:3

  2008. 4,

  2009. verse 3.

  2010. For the

  2011. time will

  2012. come when

  2013. men will

  2014. not put

  2015. up with

  2016. sound

  2017. doctrine.

  2018. They go,

  2019. well, we

  2020. can invent

  2021. our own

  2022. ideas and

  2023. traditions.

  2024. Instead, to

  2025. suit their

  2026. own desires,

  2027. they will

  2028. gather around

  2029. them a

  2030. great number

  2031. of teachers

  2032. to say

  2033. what their

  2034. itching

  2035. ears want

  2036. to hear.

  2037. They will

  2038. turn their

  2039. ears away

  2040. from the

  2041. truth and

  2042. turn aside

  2043. to myths,

  2044. to man-made

  2045. traditions.

  2046. And all

  2047. that will

  2048. do is

  2049. lead people

  2050. into all

  2051. kinds of

  2052. confusion about

  2053. who God

  2054. is and what

  2055. we should do

  2056. as a church.

  2057. We don't

  2058. decide what

  2059. we do as

  2060. a church

  2061. according to

  2062. what I

  2063. feel or

  2064. what I

  2065. like.

  2066. It's not

  2067. about my

  2068. preference or

  2069. your preference.

  2070. It's about

  2071. what does

  2072. the Bible

  2073. teach us?

  2074. What has

  2075. God revealed

  2076. about himself?

  2077. We don't

  2078. need any

  2079. more extra

  2080. revelation.

  2081. it is

  2082. sufficient.

  2083. And then

  2084. third,

  2085. we come

  2086. to

  2087. Scripture

  2088. not like

  2089. any other

  2090. book,

  2091. but as

  2092. it is,

  2093. the Word

  2094. of God.

  2095. We read

  2096. God's Word,

  2097. we listen

  2098. to it

  2099. explained

  2100. and applied.

  2101. We do

  2102. not sit

  2103. above it,

  2104. but we

  2105. simply come

  2106. and live

  2107. under it.

  2108. If you've

  2109. ever been

  2110. to a

  2111. traditional

  2112. church

  2113. building,

  2114. not like

  2115. this,

  2116. you'll

  2117. probably

  2118. find that

  2119. when you

  2120. go into

  2121. some of

  2122. the old

  2123. buildings,

  2124. you'll

  2125. find that

  2126. there's a

  2127. great big

  2128. pulpit

  2129. away up

  2130. high.

  2131. Have you

  2132. ever seen

  2133. that great

  2134. big wooden

  2135. thing?

  2136. And there

  2137. the minister

  2138. would walk

  2139. up all

  2140. these stairs

  2141. and he

  2142. would sit

  2143. up at the

  2144. top and

  2145. the congregation

  2146. would be

  2147. down below

  2148. somewhere.

  2149. well,

  2150. apart from

  2151. it being

  2152. odd to

  2153. us,

  2154. there was

  2155. a purpose

  2156. in it.

  2157. It was

  2158. supposed to

  2159. symbolise that

  2160. the Word

  2161. had an

  2162. authority and

  2163. the people

  2164. were sitting

  2165. under the

  2166. authority of

  2167. God's Word.

  2168. And we

  2169. come here

  2170. today,

  2171. we're on

  2172. the same

  2173. plane,

  2174. the same

  2175. level here,

  2176. but all

  2177. of us

  2178. together are

  2179. under the

  2180. authority

  2181. of God's

  2182. Word and

  2183. we must

  2184. approach it

  2185. with humility.

  2186. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:12

  2187. verse 12,

  2188. this is how

  2189. we opened

  2190. up with

  2191. this prayer

  2192. this morning.

  2193. God says,

  2194. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:12

  2195. verse 12,

  2196. these are the

  2197. ones I look

  2198. on with

  2199. favour,

  2200. those who

  2201. are humble

  2202. and contrite

  2203. in spirit

  2204. and who

  2205. tremble

  2206. at my

  2207. word.

  2208. Yeah,

  2209. we can

  2210. wrestle with

  2211. it,

  2212. we can

  2213. ask our

  2214. questions and

  2215. we can

  2216. struggle over

  2217. it,

  2218. we can

  2219. come to

  2220. home groups

  2221. where we

  2222. try to

  2223. work out

  2224. how does

  2225. this apply,

  2226. what does

  2227. it mean?

  2228. But at

  2229. the end

  2230. of the

  2231. day,

  2232. in faith,

  2233. we simply

  2234. humbly

  2235. obey,

  2236. trusting that

  2237. what our

  2238. creator God

  2239. says is

  2240. good and

  2241. right and

  2242. is best

  2243. for us.

  2244. It's not

  2245. my opinion,

  2246. it's not

  2247. what I feel

  2248. or what I

  2249. think,

  2250. but what

  2251. God is

  2252. saying to

  2253. us.

  2254. Another

  2255. reformer,

  2256. this time

  2257. this guy

  2258. Ulrich

  2259. Zwingli,

  2260. who was

  2261. working in

  2262. Switzerland,

  2263. he put

  2264. it like

  2265. this,

  2266. he wrote

  2267. a lot

  2268. about

  2269. God's

  2270. word,

  2271. he said,

  2272. the word

  2273. of God

  2274. is certain

  2275. and can

  2276. never fail,

  2277. it is

  2278. clear and

  2279. will never

  2280. leave us

  2281. in darkness,

  2282. it teaches

  2283. its own

  2284. truth,

  2285. it arises

  2286. and irradiates

  2287. the soul

  2288. of man

  2289. with full

  2290. salvation

  2291. and grace,

  2292. it gives

  2293. the soul

  2294. sure comfort

  2295. in God,

  2296. it humbles

  2297. it,

  2298. so that

  2299. it loses

  2300. and indeed

  2301. condemns

  2302. itself

  2303. and lays

  2304. hold

  2305. of God.

  2306. This is

  2307. what scripture

  2308. should do,

  2309. bring us

  2310. to a place

  2311. of humility

  2312. and say,

  2313. Lord,

  2314. your will

  2315. be done

  2316. in my

  2317. life,

  2318. let your

  2319. word take

  2320. centre place,

  2321. let me live

  2322. according to it

  2323. and give me

  2324. the grace

  2325. and give me

  2326. the power

  2327. of your

  2328. spirit

  2329. to obey

  2330. and do

  2331. what it

  2332. says.

  2333. Salvation

  2334. is according

  2335. to scripture

  2336. alone.

  2337. We would

  2338. never know

  2339. anything of

  2340. God's salvation

  2341. if God

  2342. did not

  2343. reveal it

  2344. to us

  2345. in his

  2346. words.

  2347. We would

  2348. never know

  2349. anything about

  2350. Jesus,

  2351. what it is

  2352. to grow

  2353. in him,

  2354. how we

  2355. should live

  2356. and how we

  2357. should behave

  2358. as a church

  2359. unless God

  2360. spoke.

  2361. This is

  2362. God's

  2363. message

  2364. alive to

  2365. us today

  2366. to change

  2367. us and

  2368. make us

  2369. more like

  2370. him.

  2371. So let's

  2372. together,

  2373. in humility,

  2374. live under

  2375. his word.

  2376. Let's pray

  2377. together.

  2378. Amen.
