  1. Verses 1-10

  2. Paul, an apostle, sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father,

  3. who raised him from the dead, and all the brothers with me.

  4. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

  5. who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age,

  6. according to the will of our God and Father,

  7. to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

  8. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ

  9. and are turning to a different gospel, which is really no gospel at all.

  10. Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.

  11. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach a gospel other than the one we preach to you,

  12. let him be eternally condemned.

  13. As we have already said, so now I say again,

  14. if anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you are accepted,

  15. let him be eternally condemned.

  16. Am I not now trying to win the approval of men or of God?

  17. Or am I trying to please men?

  18. If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

  19. Well, let's pray together.

  20. Father, thank you for your word, the Bible.

  21. Thank you that it is written in our language, that we have access to it.

  22. Thank you that it speaks to us of your truth.

  23. Truth we can trust.

  24. Truth we can build our life upon.

  25. Truth that brings life and life eternal.

  26. And we ask, Holy Spirit of God, that you would give us understanding, not just with our minds,

  27. but this truth about Jesus Christ alone,

  28. would shape our hearts,

  29. change us in a way that helps us see

  30. that Jesus Christ is enough

  31. for all life.

  32. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  33. Amen.

  34. Well, I have a little equation for you as we start.

  35. That's not minus Christ, by the way.

  36. That's a little bullet point, so forget about the minus.

  37. But Christ plus what

  38. equals salvation?

  39. Christ plus what

  40. equals salvation.

  41. Or, think of it in this way.

  42. If you died tonight

  43. and you found yourself standing before God,

  44. and God asked you,

  45. why should I let you into my heaven,

  46. what would you say to God?

  47. What's going to be your answer?

  48. Well, if your answer starts with something like this,

  49. because I,

  50. because I have been a good person,

  51. because I contribute to society,

  52. then you are not guaranteed salvation.

  53. But if your answer goes something like this,

  54. because Christ,

  55. because Christ died for me,

  56. because Christ took the blame for my sin,

  57. then you are guaranteed salvation.

  58. You see,

  59. the answer to this equation is,

  60. Christ plus nothing

  61. equals salvation.

  62. In other words,

  63. we're saying that Christ is enough.

  64. Christ is sufficient.

  65. That's what we've been singing and thinking about this morning.

  66. Our salvation is not what I do,

  67. it's not my performance,

  68. or my work,

  69. but what Christ has done for us.

  70. So have a look at the reading

  71. in Galatians chapter 1,

    Galatians 1:3

  72. verse 3.

  73. Galatians 1, verse 3.

    Galatians 1:3

  74. Grace and peace to you

  75. from God our Father

  76. and the Lord Jesus Christ,

  77. who gave himself for our sins

  78. to rescue us from this present evil age

  79. according to the will of our God and Father,

  80. to whom be glory forever and ever.

  81. Amen.

  82. So in a very succinct way,

  83. it's saying that Christ is sufficient.

  84. What Christ has done is enough.

  85. We've been thinking about the Reformation

  86. and one of the Reformers,

  87. Ulrich Zwingli, put it like this.

  88. Through Christ alone,

  89. we are given salvation,

  90. blessedness,

  91. grace,

  92. pardon,

  93. and all that makes us in any way

  94. worthy or right

  95. in the sight of a righteous God.

  96. You see, if we're to try and earn our salvation,

  97. it will only break us

  98. and destroy us.

  99. If we're living a life whereby we think

  100. when we stand before God,

  101. we answer something like this,

  102. because I,

  103. and it's all about what I do,

  104. it will destroy you.

  105. Martin Luther,

  106. who we met last week,

  107. one of the men responsible for the Reformation,

  108. he started his young life out as a law student.

  109. And in the grounds of the university

  110. where he studied,

  111. was a statue,

  112. a great big statue of Jesus.

  113. And in one hand,

  114. Jesus is holding the weighing scales of justice.

  115. And in the grip of his teeth

  116. is the blade of a sword.

  117. And this statue terrified Luther

  118. as he walked through the university grounds.

  119. He always felt like Christ was eyeballing him.

  120. And it continually made him feel guilty

  121. and under God's judgment.

  122. Well, in fear of God's judgment,

  123. Luther gave up studying law,

  124. chucked it all in,

  125. and he became a monk.

  126. He hoped in some way

  127. that this might please God

  128. or he could somehow earn his acceptance

  129. before God.

  130. Reflecting back on his life many years later,

  131. Luther wrote this.

  132. He says,

  133. I myself was a monk for 20 years.

  134. I tortured myself with praying,

  135. fasting,

  136. keeping vigils,

  137. and freezing.

  138. The cold was enough to kill me.

  139. So he would literally go out into the snow,

  140. kneel down and pray in the freezing cold.

  141. I inflicted upon myself such pain

  142. as I would never inflict again,

  143. even if I could.

  144. He continued,

  145. if any monk

  146. ever got to heaven by monkery,

  147. great little word that,

  148. isn't it?

  149. Then I should have made it.

  150. If it lasted much longer,

  151. I would have killed myself

  152. with vigils,

  153. praying,

  154. reading,

  155. and the other labours.

  156. You see,

  157. this young man,

  158. Martin Luther,

  159. tried to work

  160. for his salvation

  161. through praying,

  162. through reading,

  163. through all these different disciplines.

  164. You see,

  165. the church had been teaching him that,

  166. yes,

  167. Christ had died for our sins,

  168. but it did not guarantee

  169. your eternal salvation.

  170. In fact,

  171. the church taught

  172. that you were somehow

  173. suspended on the one hand

  174. between the grace of God

  175. and the judgment of God.

  176. You swung between the two

  177. depending on how good you were.

  178. And the only way

  179. to avoid God's judgment

  180. at the end

  181. was to work off your sins

  182. through acts of confession

  183. or receiving grace

  184. through the sacraments

  185. so that the more time

  186. that you had communion

  187. or mass,

  188. well then,

  189. the more likely

  190. you were to be in favour

  191. with God.

  192. And Luther was so troubled

  193. with his sins

  194. that he spent hours

  195. every day

  196. in confession.

  197. He feared

  198. that he was overlooking

  199. some sin

  200. that he wasn't aware of.

  201. At one point,

  202. his superior,

  203. who he used to go

  204. confess to,

  205. said this,

  206. he was quite cross with him,

  207. look here,

  208. brother Martin,

  209. if you are going

  210. to confess so much,

  211. why don't you do

  212. something worth confessing?

  213. Kill your mother

  214. or father,

  215. commit adultery,

  216. stop coming in here

  217. with such flumenry

  218. or nonsense

  219. and fake sins.

  220. this man was plagued

  221. so much with his guilt

  222. that he was desperate

  223. to try and find peace

  224. with God.

  225. But it wasn't until

  226. he began to read

  227. the scriptures

  228. and study the Bible

  229. for himself

  230. that he came to see

  231. that salvation

  232. was guaranteed

  233. not by his works,

  234. but Christ's sufficient

  235. work on the cross.

  236. What he discovered

  237. was not new,

  238. it was a rediscovered truth

  239. from the Bible.

  240. By opening up the Bible

  241. for himself

  242. and reading what God

  243. had said,

  244. he came to see

  245. it was all about

  246. Jesus.

  247. It's summarized like this,

  248. it's in the news sheet,

  249. you can read it there.

  250. salvation

  251. is according to

  252. scripture alone,

  253. maybe I have it here,

  254. it is there,

  255. salvation is according

  256. to scripture alone

  257. in Christ alone,

  258. that's the part

  259. we're going to look at today,

  260. by grace alone,

  261. through faith alone,

  262. for the glory of God alone.

  263. Of course,

  264. this whole idea

  265. of Christ plus works

  266. or trying to earn

  267. or work for your salvation

  268. was nothing new.

  269. The apostle Paul

  270. had to confront it

  271. in the church at Galatia,

  272. which is why we read

  273. from the beginning

  274. of Galatians.

  275. So let's turn there

  276. to verse 6,

  277. chapter 1,

  278. verse 6.

  279. Paul had come

  280. to this church

  281. in Galatia,

  282. modern day Turkey,

  283. and had been preaching

  284. telling people

  285. the good news

  286. about Christ,

  287. and it was just Christ

  288. and nothing but Christ.

  289. But something had happened.

  290. Chapter 1,

  291. verse 6.

  292. He's writing to the church,

  293. I am astonished

  294. that you are so quickly

  295. deserting the one

  296. who called you

  297. by the grace of Christ

  298. and are turning

  299. to a different gospel,

  300. which is really

  301. no gospel at all.

  302. Evidently,

  303. some people

  304. are throwing you

  305. into confusion

  306. and are trying

  307. to pervert

  308. or twist

  309. the gospel of Christ.

  310. So there were people

  311. who had heard

  312. the good news

  313. about Jesus,

  314. but now they were

  315. beginning to teach

  316. the rest of the church.

  317. So like a similar

  318. situation to this,

  319. the leader,

  320. the pastor,

  321. would stand up

  322. and give a talk

  323. and they were saying,

  324. listen guys,

  325. you've started

  326. with Christ,

  327. but Christ is not enough.

  328. You need something more.

  329. Christ will get you

  330. so far,

  331. but you need more

  332. than that.

  333. What you need to do is

  334. you need to be

  335. a good person.

  336. You need to obey

  337. everything that God

  338. said in his laws.

  339. So it was Christ

  340. plus works

  341. equals salvation.

  342. Now this was far

  343. too serious

  344. to ignore.

  345. So Paul writes

  346. this whole letter

  347. of Galatians

  348. to address

  349. the issue.

  350. We pick it up again

  351. in chapter 2

  352. verse 6.

  353. He wants to bring

  354. them back

  355. to the heart

  356. of the truth.

  357. So chapter 2,

  358. sorry,

  359. chapter 2

  360. verse 16.

  361. Chapter 2

  362. verse 16.

  363. He says,

  364. we know

  365. that a man

  366. or a person

  367. is not justified.

  368. That simply means

  369. not declared

  370. right

  371. before God

  372. by observing

  373. the law,

  374. by doing

  375. good things,

  376. but by faith

  377. in Jesus Christ.

  378. So we too

  379. have put our

  380. faith in

  381. Christ Jesus,

  382. that we may be

  383. declared right

  384. before God

  385. by faith

  386. in Christ

  387. and not by

  388. observing the law,

  389. not by doing

  390. good things.

  391. Because by

  392. observing the law,

  393. no one

  394. will be made

  395. right

  396. before God.

  397. So,

  398. verse 21,

  399. I do not

  400. set aside

  401. the grace

  402. of God

  403. for if

  404. righteousness,

  405. if right standing

  406. before God

  407. could be gained

  408. through the law,

  409. Christ died

  410. for nothing.

  411. If you

  412. can go it

  413. alone,

  414. then the death

  415. of Christ

  416. is a complete

  417. waste of time.

  418. if you think

  419. that you can

  420. stand before

  421. God and say,

  422. because I

  423. did

  424. X,

  425. Y,

  426. and Z,

  427. then

  428. I will be

  429. acceptable to

  430. God.

  431. If that's

  432. true,

  433. then Jesus

  434. Christ died

  435. for nothing.

  436. He might

  437. well not have

  438. been born.

  439. It's a complete

  440. waste of time.

  441. the point

  442. is,

  443. we cannot

  444. earn

  445. our acceptance.

  446. Move on a little

  447. bit to chapter 5,

  448. verse 3.

  449. Chapter 5,

  450. verse 3.

  451. Again,

  452. I declare to

  453. every person

  454. who lets

  455. himself be

  456. circumcised,

  457. so this was

  458. one of the

  459. laws of the

  460. Old Testament,

  461. one of the

  462. clean laws,

  463. that if you

  464. were circumcised,

  465. well then it

  466. would give you

  467. a right standing

  468. before God

  469. and acceptance

  470. before God.

  471. This is what

  472. they came to

  473. think.

  474. He says,

  475. if you let

  476. yourself be

  477. circumcised,

  478. you're required

  479. to obey all

  480. the laws.

  481. So if you

  482. start out

  483. life saying

  484. it's about

  485. being good,

  486. then you

  487. must be

  488. perfectly good.

  489. Verse 4.

  490. You who are

  491. trying to be

  492. justified by

  493. law have

  494. been alienated

  495. from Christ.

  496. You have

  497. fallen away

  498. from Christ.

  499. So to try

  500. and earn

  501. your way

  502. before God

  503. is to turn

  504. away from

  505. the very

  506. person,

  507. the only

  508. one,

  509. who can

  510. give you

  511. salvation.

  512. Now you

  513. might be

  514. reading through

  515. this and

  516. you go,

  517. no,

  518. I don't

  519. believe that,

  520. or I do

  521. believe it,

  522. I know it's

  523. all about

  524. Christ.

  525. But yet we

  526. believe and

  527. we practice

  528. certain things.

  529. So sometimes

  530. we say,

  531. yes,

  532. it's Christ

  533. plus

  534. reading my

  535. Bible.

  536. Or Christ

  537. plus so long

  538. as I don't

  539. get drunk

  540. or don't

  541. watch porn.

  542. or it's

  543. Christ plus

  544. serving in

  545. the church

  546. or Christ

  547. plus getting

  548. baptized and

  549. becoming a

  550. member.

  551. If I do

  552. all of these

  553. things,

  554. then my

  555. salvation will

  556. be guaranteed

  557. and then God

  558. will be pleased

  559. with me.

  560. He'll look at

  561. my life and

  562. see that I'm

  563. a good person.

  564. But these

  565. things, no

  566. matter how good

  567. they are,

  568. and they're all

  569. good and all

  570. evidences of

  571. someone who

  572. follows Christ,

  573. in and of

  574. themselves,

  575. they will

  576. never ever

  577. save you.

  578. Which is why

  579. chapter 6

  580. verse 14,

  581. almost the

  582. whole letter

  583. is concluded

  584. here in

  585. verse 14

  586. of chapter 6.

  587. verse 14.

  588. He says,

  589. May I

  590. never boast

  591. except in

  592. the cross

  593. of our

  594. Lord Jesus

  595. Christ.

  596. So go

  597. back to

  598. that

  599. illustration

  600. at the

  601. beginning.

  602. If you're

  603. standing there

  604. before God,

  605. what am I

  606. going to

  607. say?

  608. What is

  609. our boasting?

  610. Is it

  611. something I

  612. have done,

  613. something I

  614. do?

  615. or am I

  616. going to

  617. say it's

  618. all because

  619. of Jesus?

  620. I will

  621. boast in

  622. nothing else

  623. except in

  624. what Christ

  625. has done.

  626. It's

  627. Christ

  628. plus

  629. nothing

  630. equals

  631. salvation.

  632. We're

  633. going to

  634. see how

  635. this works

  636. out in

  637. more detail.

  638. First,

  639. the need

  640. for Christ

  641. alone.

  642. The need

  643. for Christ

  644. alone.

  645. Go back

  646. to chapter

  647. 1,

  648. verse 3.

  649. Chapter

  650. 1,

  651. verse 3.

  652. Grace

  653. and peace

  654. to you

  655. from God

  656. our Father

  657. and the

  658. Lord Jesus

  659. Christ

  660. who gave

  661. himself

  662. for our

  663. sins.

  664. We need

  665. Christ

  666. because of

  667. our sin.

  668. Now most

  669. of the time

  670. we think

  671. of sins

  672. as a

  673. weakness.

  674. Really,

  675. really bad

  676. sins and

  677. kind of

  678. little sins.

  679. They're

  680. things that

  681. we can

  682. fix by

  683. ourselves,

  684. by being

  685. better people

  686. or by

  687. trying harder.

  688. We look

  689. at our

  690. life,

  691. we see

  692. things we

  693. don't like,

  694. we know

  695. it's wrong

  696. and we

  697. say,

  698. I can

  699. change

  700. that

  701. myself.

  702. I'm

  703. able to

  704. change

  705. my own

  706. life.

  707. But sin

  708. is not

  709. a weakness.

  710. It's not

  711. a lack

  712. of being

  713. good.

  714. It's not

  715. about

  716. trying

  717. harder.

  718. Sin

  719. is a

  720. nature

  721. that we

  722. have,

  723. that we

  724. are born

  725. with.

  726. Our

  727. whole

  728. life

  729. is

  730. corrupt.

  731. In fact,

  732. it's

  733. rebellion

  734. against

  735. God.

  736. Sin

  737. is a

  738. relational

  739. problem.

  740. It's

  741. our

  742. nature

  743. which

  744. is

  745. in

  746. conflict

  747. with

  748. God.

  749. So we

  750. don't

  751. relate

  752. to

  753. God

  754. as

  755. we

  756. should.

  757. One

  758. author

  759. and

  760. writer

  761. by the

  762. name

  763. of

  764. Mike

  765. Reeves

  766. paraphrases

  767. something

  768. that

  769. Martin

  770. Luther

  771. said

  772. and he

  773. puts

  774. it

  775. like

  776. this.

  777. I

  778. think

  779. it's

  780. quite

  781. helpful.

  782. Follow

  783. along

  784. with me

  785. as I

  786. read

  787. it.

  788. The

  789. problem

  790. of our

  791. sin

  792. goes

  793. as

  794. deep

  795. in

  796. us

  797. as

  798. it

  799. possibly

  800. can.

  801. all

  802. the

  803. way

  804. down

  805. into

  806. our

  807. hearts

  808. shaping

  809. what

  810. we

  811. want

  812. and

  813. love.

  814. As

  815. a result

  816. we

  817. never

  818. naturally

  819. want

  820. God.

  821. We

  822. freely

  823. choose

  824. to do

  825. the

  826. things

  827. we

  828. want

  829. but

  830. left

  831. to

  832. ourselves

  833. we

  834. shall

  835. never

  836. freely

  837. choose

  838. God

  839. because

  840. we

  841. do

  842. not

  843. naturally

  844. want

  845. him.

  846. that's

  847. quite

  848. a

  849. statement

  850. to

  851. think

  852. about

  853. ourselves

  854. like

  855. that.

  856. We

  857. can't

  858. even

  859. if we

  860. wanted

  861. to

  862. choose

  863. to

  864. follow

  865. God.

  866. Our

  867. sinful

  868. nature

  869. is such

  870. that we

  871. are

  872. in

  873. conflict

  874. with

  875. God.

  876. We

  877. don't

  878. have a

  879. weakness

  880. problem

  881. something

  882. we can

  883. fix

  884. ourselves

  885. we

  886. have

  887. a

  888. sinful

  889. nature

  890. that

  891. wants

  892. to

  893. take

  894. the

  895. place

  896. of

  897. God

  898. and

  899. that

  900. puts

  901. us

  902. on

  903. a

  904. collision

  905. course

  906. with

  907. God's

  908. wrath

  909. or

  910. God's

  911. judgment.

  912. So

  913. have a

  914. look at

  915. chapter

  916. 3

  917. and

  918. verse

  919. 10.

  920. Chapter

  921. 3

  922. verse

  923. 10.

  924. As

  925. we go

  926. through

  927. Galatians

  928. you're

  929. getting a

  930. big

  931. overview

  932. of what

  933. the

  934. book

  935. is

  936. all

  937. about

  938. the

  939. letter

  940. is

  941. all

  942. about

  943. so

  944. chapter

  945. 3

  946. verse

  947. 10.

  948. He

  949. says

  950. all

  951. who

  952. rely

  953. on

  954. observing

  955. the

  956. law

  957. so

  958. everybody

  959. who

  960. tries

  961. to

  962. earn

  963. their

  964. salvation

  965. by

  966. doing

  967. good

  968. things

  969. or

  970. everyone

  971. who

  972. thinks

  973. they

  974. can

  975. fix

  976. their

  977. life

  978. themselves

  979. have

  980. the

  981. power

  982. within

  983. themselves

  984. to

  985. change

  986. themselves

  987. all

  988. who

  989. rely

  990. on

  991. observing

  992. the

  993. law

  994. are

  995. under

  996. a

  997. curse

  998. are

  999. under

  1000. God's

  1001. judgment

  1002. for

  1003. it

  1004. is

  1005. written

  1006. there's

  1007. a

  1008. quote

  1009. here

  1010. from

  1011. Deuteronomy

  1012. in the

  1013. Old

  1014. Testament

  1015. cursed

  1016. is

  1017. everyone

  1018. who

  1019. does

  1020. not

  1021. continue

  1022. to do

  1023. everything

  1024. written

  1025. in the

  1026. book

  1027. of

  1028. the

  1029. law

  1030. so

  1031. going

  1032. back

  1033. God

  1034. had

  1035. said

  1036. to

  1037. his

  1038. people

  1039. if

  1040. you

  1041. obey

  1042. me

  1043. you

  1044. will

  1045. be

  1046. blessed

  1047. if

  1048. you

  1049. love

  1050. me

  1051. as

  1052. you

  1053. should

  1054. and

  1055. do

  1056. everything

  1057. I

  1058. tell

  1059. you

  1060. to

  1061. do

  1062. I

  1063. will

  1064. accept

  1065. you

  1066. if

  1067. you

  1068. disobey

  1069. me

  1070. you

  1071. will

  1072. be

  1073. cursed

  1074. if

  1075. you

  1076. don't

  1077. love

  1078. me

  1079. as

  1080. you

  1081. should

  1082. I

  1083. will

  1084. judge

  1085. you

  1086. so

  1087. it

  1088. was

  1089. really

  1090. quite

  1091. simple

  1092. obey

  1093. God

  1094. and

  1095. you

  1096. will

  1097. avoid

  1098. judgment

  1099. but

  1100. the

  1101. problem

  1102. was

  1103. and

  1104. the

  1105. same

  1106. problem

  1107. exists

  1108. for

  1109. us

  1110. as

  1111. well

  1112. we

  1113. cannot

  1114. obey

  1115. God

  1116. fully

  1117. and

  1118. completely

  1119. we

  1120. don't

  1121. have

  1122. that

  1123. ability

  1124. within

  1125. ourselves

  1126. to

  1127. do

  1128. it

  1129. so

  1130. as

  1131. it

  1132. says

  1133. at

  1134. the

  1135. end

  1136. of

  1137. verse

  1138. 10

  1139. cursed

  1140. or

  1141. judged

  1142. is

  1143. everyone

  1144. who

  1145. does

  1146. not

  1147. continue

  1148. to

  1149. do

  1150. everything

  1151. that

  1152. God

  1153. says

  1154. now

  1155. just

  1156. try

  1157. that

  1158. maybe

  1159. you're

  1160. thinking

  1161. here

  1162. well

  1163. you know

  1164. what

  1165. I

  1166. can

  1167. I

  1168. can

  1169. actually

  1170. be a

  1171. good

  1172. person

  1173. I

  1174. can

  1175. if I

  1176. put

  1177. my

  1178. mind

  1179. to

  1180. it

  1181. I

  1182. can

  1183. obey

  1184. God

  1185. and

  1186. do

  1187. everything

  1188. he

  1189. asked

  1190. me

  1191. to

  1192. do

  1193. well

  1194. just

  1195. try

  1196. for

  1197. one

  1198. day

  1199. to

  1200. be

  1201. a

  1202. good

  1203. person

  1204. that

  1205. means

  1206. a

  1207. whole

  1208. day

  1209. 24

  1210. hours

  1211. without

  1212. thinking

  1213. saying

  1214. or

  1215. doing

  1216. anything

  1217. that

  1218. you

  1219. know

  1220. you

  1221. shouldn't

  1222. just

  1223. try

  1224. it

  1225. even

  1226. try

  1227. it

  1228. for

  1229. the

  1230. duration

  1231. of

  1232. this

  1233. meeting

  1234. but

  1235. you

  1236. can't

  1237. I'm

  1238. telling

  1239. you

  1240. now

  1241. you

  1242. can't

  1243. you'll

  1244. find

  1245. out

  1246. our

  1247. sinful

  1248. nature

  1249. our

  1250. inability

  1251. to

  1252. choose

  1253. and

  1254. obey

  1255. God

  1256. means

  1257. we

  1258. are

  1259. under

  1260. the

  1261. curse

  1262. of

  1263. God

  1264. we're

  1265. under

  1266. his

  1267. judgment

  1268. we

  1269. deserve

  1270. his

  1271. judgment

  1272. because

  1273. we

  1274. fight

  1275. against

  1276. him

  1277. we

  1278. want

  1279. to

  1280. replace

  1281. him

  1282. you

  1283. see

  1284. the

  1285. greatest

  1286. problem

  1287. that we

  1288. all

  1289. face

  1290. is not

  1291. unemployment

  1292. it's not

  1293. getting sick

  1294. it's not

  1295. our mortgage

  1296. repayments

  1297. our greatest

  1298. problem that we

  1299. can face

  1300. is God's

  1301. justice

  1302. because

  1303. God is

  1304. committed

  1305. to judging

  1306. sin

  1307. all the

  1308. evil

  1309. all the

  1310. wickedness

  1311. that we

  1312. see

  1313. and read

  1314. about

  1315. on our

  1316. news

  1317. and

  1318. and all

  1319. the things

  1320. we

  1321. hear

  1322. God

  1323. must

  1324. deal

  1325. with

  1326. that

  1327. he's

  1328. not

  1329. going

  1330. to

  1331. let

  1332. it

  1333. go

  1334. and

  1335. that

  1336. means

  1337. God

  1338. must

  1339. judge

  1340. my

  1341. sin

  1342. within

  1343. my

  1344. heart

  1345. and

  1346. because

  1347. I

  1348. have

  1349. a

  1350. sinful

  1351. nature

  1352. God

  1353. must

  1354. judge

  1355. me

  1356. sometimes

  1357. we hear

  1358. a phrase

  1359. like

  1360. this

  1361. you know

  1362. the

  1363. difference

  1364. between

  1365. the

  1366. sinner

  1367. and

  1368. the

  1369. sin

  1370. well

  1371. we

  1372. can't

  1373. really

  1374. separate

  1375. the

  1376. sin

  1377. from

  1378. the

  1379. person

  1380. we

  1381. have

  1382. a

  1383. sinful

  1384. nature

  1385. and

  1386. if

  1387. God

  1388. is

  1389. going

  1390. to

  1391. judge

  1392. sin

  1393. he's

  1394. going

  1395. to

  1396. judge

  1397. me

  1398. you

  1399. see

  1400. without

  1401. Christ

  1402. I

  1403. stand

  1404. under

  1405. the

  1406. curse

  1407. of

  1408. God

  1409. the

  1410. judgment

  1411. of

  1412. God

  1413. I

  1414. need

  1415. Christ

  1416. and

  1417. I

  1418. need

  1419. Christ

  1420. alone

  1421. second

  1422. the

  1423. sacrifice

  1424. of

  1425. Christ

  1426. alone

  1427. so

  1428. look

  1429. at

  1430. verse

  1431. 13

  1432. we

  1433. get

  1434. this

  1435. wonderful

  1436. response

  1437. in

  1438. verse

  1439. 13

  1440. wonderful

  1441. news

  1442. Christ

  1443. redeemed

  1444. us

  1445. from

  1446. the

  1447. curse

  1448. of

  1449. the

  1450. law

  1451. by

  1452. becoming

  1453. a

  1454. curse

  1455. for

  1456. us

  1457. he

  1458. became

  1459. a

  1460. curse

  1461. for

  1462. us

  1463. that

  1464. little

  1465. phrase

  1466. those

  1467. two

  1468. words

  1469. for

  1470. us

  1471. means

  1472. that

  1473. Christ

  1474. exchanged

  1475. places

  1476. with

  1477. us

  1478. Christ

  1479. becomes

  1480. my

  1481. sin

  1482. he

  1483. becomes

  1484. my

  1485. curse

  1486. my

  1487. judgment

  1488. man

  1489. I

  1490. want

  1491. to

  1492. read

  1493. a

  1494. couple

  1495. of

  1496. quotes

  1497. here

  1498. they're

  1499. quite

  1500. long

  1501. but

  1502. you

  1503. follow

  1504. along

  1505. with

  1506. me

  1507. they

  1508. come

  1509. again

  1510. from

  1511. Martin

  1512. Luther

  1513. who

  1514. wrote

  1515. a

  1516. commentary

  1517. like

  1518. an

  1519. explanation

  1520. of what

  1521. Galatians

  1522. is all

  1523. about

  1524. and here's

  1525. what he

  1526. said

  1527. on this

  1528. issue

  1529. follow

  1530. along

  1531. with

  1532. me

  1533. as I

  1534. read

  1535. all

  1536. the

  1537. weight

  1538. of the

  1539. matter

  1540. stands

  1541. on this

  1542. word

  1543. or phrase

  1544. for

  1545. us

  1546. for

  1547. Christ

  1548. is

  1549. innocent

  1550. as

  1551. concerning

  1552. his

  1553. own

  1554. person

  1555. so he's

  1556. never done

  1557. anything

  1558. wrong

  1559. he was

  1560. perfect

  1561. but

  1562. Christ

  1563. bears

  1564. all

  1565. the

  1566. sins

  1567. of

  1568. all

  1569. men

  1570. in

  1571. his

  1572. body

  1573. not

  1574. that

  1575. he

  1576. is

  1577. guilty

  1578. of

  1579. any

  1580. but

  1581. that

  1582. he

  1583. received

  1584. them

  1585. being

  1586. committed

  1587. or

  1588. done

  1589. by

  1590. us

  1591. and

  1592. laid

  1593. them

  1594. on

  1595. his

  1596. own

  1597. body

  1598. we

  1599. must

  1600. know

  1601. him

  1602. to

  1603. be

  1604. wrapped

  1605. in

  1606. our

  1607. sins

  1608. in

  1609. our

  1610. curse

  1611. in

  1612. our

  1613. death

  1614. and

  1615. in

  1616. all

  1617. our

  1618. evils

  1619. as

  1620. he

  1621. is

  1622. wrapped

  1623. in

  1624. our

  1625. flesh

  1626. and

  1627. blood

  1628. whatever

  1629. sins

  1630. I

  1631. you

  1632. or

  1633. we

  1634. all

  1635. have

  1636. done

  1637. or

  1638. shall

  1639. do

  1640. hereafter

  1641. they

  1642. are

  1643. Christ's

  1644. own

  1645. sins

  1646. or

  1647. else

  1648. we

  1649. would

  1650. perish

  1651. forever

  1652. again

  1653. let me

  1654. read

  1655. another

  1656. one

  1657. follow

  1658. with

  1659. me

  1660. our

  1661. most

  1662. merciful

  1663. father

  1664. seeing

  1665. us

  1666. to be

  1667. oppressed

  1668. and

  1669. overwhelmed

  1670. with

  1671. the

  1672. curse

  1673. of

  1674. the

  1675. law

  1676. and

  1677. that

  1678. we

  1679. could

  1680. never

  1681. be

  1682. delivered

  1683. from

  1684. it

  1685. of

  1686. our

  1687. own

  1688. power

  1689. sent

  1690. his

  1691. only

  1692. son

  1693. into

  1694. the

  1695. world

  1696. and

  1697. laid

  1698. upon

  1699. him

  1700. all

  1701. the

  1702. sins

  1703. of

  1704. all

  1705. men

  1706. saying

  1707. be

  1708. thou

  1709. Peter

  1710. that

  1711. denier

  1712. Paul

  1713. that

  1714. persecutor

  1715. and cruel

  1716. oppressor

  1717. David

  1718. that

  1719. adulterer

  1720. that

  1721. sinner

  1722. who

  1723. did

  1724. eat

  1725. the

  1726. fruit

  1727. in

  1728. Eden

  1729. that

  1730. was

  1731. Adam

  1732. that

  1733. thief

  1734. who

  1735. hanged

  1736. upon

  1737. the

  1738. cross

  1739. and

  1740. be

  1741. thou

  1742. that

  1743. person

  1744. who

  1745. has

  1746. committed

  1747. the

  1748. sins

  1749. of

  1750. all

  1751. men

  1752. see

  1753. therefore

  1754. that

  1755. thou

  1756. pay

  1757. and

  1758. satisfy

  1759. for

  1760. them

  1761. now

  1762. just

  1763. think

  1764. about

  1765. that

  1766. last

  1767. bit

  1768. where

  1769. he

  1770. begins

  1771. to

  1772. personalize

  1773. it

  1774. it's

  1775. like

  1776. saying

  1777. to

  1778. Jesus

  1779. you've

  1780. become

  1781. Peter

  1782. the

  1783. denier

  1784. Jesus

  1785. you've

  1786. become

  1787. Paul

  1788. the

  1789. persecutor

  1790. Jesus

  1791. you've

  1792. become

  1793. David

  1794. the

  1795. adulterer

  1796. now

  1797. put

  1798. yourself

  1799. in

  1800. that

  1801. situation

  1802. Jesus

  1803. doesn't

  1804. just

  1805. take

  1806. our

  1807. sin

  1808. he

  1809. takes

  1810. our

  1811. place

  1812. it's

  1813. like

  1814. he

  1815. becomes

  1816. us

  1817. in

  1818. love

1819. Christ becomes sin for us.

1820. But that means justice must still be done.

  1821. Sin must be punished.

  1822. The curse must fall.

1823. Either it will fall on us

1824. or it will fall on someone else.

1825. So Christ becomes sin for us

1826. and therefore he is cursed for us.

  1827. Verse 13.

  1828. Let's read verse 13 again.

1829. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law

1830. by becoming a curse for us

  1831. for it is written

1832. and again it's a quote from the Old Testament

1833. cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.

1834. So the curse, the judgment,

1835. the punishment for not fully obeying God

1836. and doing everything as God has said

  1837. is judgment.

  1838. It was death.

1839. Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.

1840. So in taking my sin on himself

  1841. Christ now becomes guilty

  1842. deserving of judgment.

1843. And as Christ died on the cross

1844. he is being treated as a sinner

  1845. because at that moment

  1846. Christ is a sinner.

1847. With his arms nailed to the cross

1848. his feet nailed to the cross

1849. the curse falls not on us

1850. but it falls instead on Jesus.

  1851. He absorbed the wrath

  1852. for my sin.

  1853. John's Gospel

1854. that we read earlier as we were singing

1855. at the end of the Gospel

  1856. where Jesus dies

  1857. John records there

  1858. that as Jesus died

  1859. he cried out

  1860. it is finished.

  1861. In other words

  1862. it's over.

  1863. At the cross

  1864. justice has been done.

  1865. Sin has been punished

  1866. once and for all.

  1867. There's nothing left

  1868. for us to do.

  1869. Let me quote again

  1870. from Martin Luther

  1871. on his commentary

  1872. in Galatians.

  1873. He says this

  1874. follow along with me

  1875. Let us receive

  1876. this most sweet doctrine

  1877. this sweet truth

  1878. so full of comfort

  1879. with thanksgiving

  1880. and with assured faith

  1881. which teaches

  1882. that Christ

  1883. being made a curse

  1884. for us

  1885. that is a sinner

1886. under the wrath of God

  1887. put upon himself

  1888. our person

  1889. and laid our sins

  1890. on his own shoulders

  1891. saying

  1892. I have committed

  1893. the sins

  1894. which all men

  1895. have committed

  1896. because he has taken

  1897. upon himself

  1898. our sins

  1899. not by constraint

1900. not because he was forced

1901. but of his own good will

  1902. it pleased him

  1903. to bear the punishment

  1904. and wrath of God

1905. not for his own person

1906. not for his own good

  1907. but for our person

  1908. for our good

1909. so making a happy exchange

  1910. with us

  1911. he took upon himself

  1912. our sinful person

  1913. and gave unto us

  1914. his innocent

  1915. and victorious person

  1916. wherewith we being now

  1917. clothed

  1918. are freed

  1919. from the curse

  1920. of the law

  1921. he's telling us

  1922. that the sacrifice

  1923. of Christ alone

  1924. is sufficient

1925. to deal with our sin

  1926. and our deserved judgment

  1927. so when we stand

  1928. before God

  1929. it's not because I

  1930. it's because Christ

  1931. third the rewards

1932. or if you're taking notes

1933. you might like to change

  1934. the word rewards

  1935. to blessings

  1936. because I think sometimes

  1937. when you say reward

  1938. it's something you earn

1939. or you're thinking you earn

1940. so change that to blessing

  1941. so the blessing

  1942. through Christ alone

  1943. the blessings

  1944. that we receive

  1945. because of what Christ

  1946. has done

  1947. are told for us

  1948. in chapter 3

  1949. verse 26

  1950. look at chapter 3

  1951. verse 26

  1952. you are all sons

  1953. or all children

  1954. of God

  1955. through faith

  1956. in Christ

  1957. Jesus

  1958. by trusting

  1959. your life

  1960. to Christ alone

  1961. by boasting

  1962. in Christ alone

  1963. our life

  1964. is forever changed

  1965. our identity

  1966. changes

  1967. our future

  1968. changes

  1969. instead of receiving

  1970. curse

  1971. we now receive

  1972. blessing

  1973. two things

  1974. quickly

  1975. that we receive

  1976. two wonderful blessings

  1977. if our faith

  1978. is in Christ

  1979. alone

  1980. first we become

  1981. children

  1982. of God

  1983. by faith

  1984. in Christ

  1985. alone

  1986. I am adopted

  1987. into the family

  1988. of God

  1989. I become a son

  1990. or a daughter

  1991. of God

  1992. the barrier

  1993. of sin

  1994. is completely

  1995. removed

  1996. so I am now

  1997. treated

  1998. as God's

  1999. own son

  2000. so look at

  2001. verse 6

  2002. of chapter 4

  2003. verse 6

  2004. because

  2005. you are sons

  2006. God sent

  2007. the spirit

  2008. of his son

  2009. into our hearts

  2010. the spirit

  2011. who calls out

  2012. Abba

  2013. which means

  2014. father

  2015. you see

  2016. without Christ

  2017. our relationship

  2018. with God

  2019. is one of guilt

  2020. and judgment

  2021. we are just like

  2022. Martin Luther

  2023. wandering around

  2024. the university grounds

  2025. terrified

  2026. of God

  2027. but now

  2028. because of Christ

  2029. I can call him

  2030. father

  2031. I am loved

  2032. and treasured

  2033. as his own son

  2034. the relationship

  2035. that Christ

  2036. has with the father

  2037. now becomes

  2038. ours to enjoy

  2039. and that means

  2040. when you or I

  2041. sin

  2042. and we continue

  2043. to sin

  2044. we don't need

  2045. to run in

  2046. fear from

  2047. God

  2048. we can come

  2049. to the father

  2050. without fear

  2051. we can come

  2052. in repentance

  2053. knowing that he

  2054. accepts us

  2055. forgives us

  2056. loves us

  2057. no longer do I

  2058. need to hide

  2059. my sin from him

  2060. no longer do I

  2061. need to try and

  2062. fix my own life

  2063. I no longer

  2064. need to fear him

  2065. I can now come

  2066. to him

  2067. and enjoy him

  2068. and receive

  2069. from him

  2070. that blessing

  2071. of being

  2072. a child

  2073. of God

  2074. but not only

  2075. that

  2076. we also

  2077. become

  2078. heirs

  2079. of God

  2080. look at verse 7

  2081. chapter 4

  2082. verse 7

  2083. so you are

  2084. no longer

  2085. a slave

  2086. but a son

  2087. and since

  2088. you are a son

  2089. God has made

  2090. you also

  2091. an heir

  2092. now

  2093. the eldest son

  2094. in the family

  2095. maybe you are

  2096. here the eldest

  2097. child in your

  2098. family

  2099. the eldest son

  2100. in the family

  2101. always was the

  2102. legal heir

  2103. to the father's

  2104. estate

  2105. so when the

  2106. father died

  2107. everything would

  2108. legally be

  2109. transferred to

  2110. the eldest son

  2111. he would inherit

  2112. everything that

  2113. belonged to the

  2114. father

  2115. now because of

  2116. Christ

  2117. we are now

  2118. treated by God

  2119. as if we are

  2120. the eldest son

  2121. we have become

  2122. heirs

  2123. so all that

  2124. belongs to

  2125. Christ

  2126. the true

  2127. eldest son

  2128. now becomes

  2129. ours today

  2130. we have an

  2131. inheritance

  2132. a glorious

  2133. future

  2134. to look forward

  2135. to

  2136. and the good

  2137. news of that

  2138. is

  2139. that even

  2140. when I sin

  2141. even when I

  2142. mess up

  2143. I am not

  2144. disqualified

  2145. from that

  2146. inheritance

  2147. even when I

  2148. fail and fall

  2149. God doesn't

  2150. strike me out

  2151. and say that's

  2152. too many times

  2153. you are no

  2154. longer going to

  2155. receive your

  2156. inheritance

  2157. because Christ

  2158. has dealt

  2159. with my sin

  2160. past

  2161. present

  2162. and future

  2163. I am

  2164. guaranteed

  2165. that future

  2166. inheritance

  2167. with him

  2168. so

  2169. salvation

  2170. is in

  2171. Christ

  2172. alone

  2173. remember that

  2174. equation at the

  2175. very beginning

  2176. it is Christ

  2177. plus nothing

  2178. equals

  2179. salvation

  2180. not because

  2181. I

  2182. but because

  2183. Christ

  2184. let's pray

  2185. together

  2186. may I

  2187. never boast

  2188. that
