  1. So, as Johnny said, the Bible reading is taken from Romans chapter 3, verses 27 to Romans

    Romans 3:27 Romans 4:8

  2. chapter 4, verse 8.

  3. And the Bible says, where then is boasting?

  4. Is it excluded?

  5. On what principle?

  6. On what?

  7. On that of observing the law?

  8. No, but on that of faith.

  9. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

  10. Is God the God of Jews only?

  11. Is he not the God of Gentiles too?

  12. Yes, of Gentiles too, since there is only one God who will justify the circumcised by faith

  13. and the uncircumcised through the same faith.

  14. Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith?

  15. Not at all.

  16. Rather, we uphold the law.

  17. What, then, shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter?

  18. If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about, but not before God.

  19. What does the scripture say?

  20. Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

  21. Now, when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation.

  22. However, to the man who does not work, but trusts God, who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.

  23. David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works.

  24. Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

  25. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against them.

  26. Here ends reading.

  27. Thank you, Joanna.

  28. Well, let's have our Bibles open there at Romans, and we'll pray together.

  29. Father, thank you for the truth of your word.

  30. Thank you that it is your voice to us, your word written down, so that we can hear about what we are like, about what you are like, what you have done for us, and how we should live in response.

  31. Father, we pray that you would give us faith.

  32. Faith to not only hear what you are saying, but faith that will apply it to our own lives, so that we become all that you call us to be.

  33. We need your help.

  34. We rest upon you.

  35. We trust you.

  36. We rely upon you.

  37. Father, help us.

  38. In Jesus' name we pray.

  39. Amen.

  40. How do you feel about facing God's judgment?

  41. Just think about that for a moment.

  42. Standing before God and giving an account to him of your entire life.

  43. How do you feel about facing God's judgment?

  44. Well, maybe you feel a little bit like our friend that we've been learning about, Martin Luther.

  45. Luther was terrified of God's judgment.

  46. Here's what he said.

  47. You might identify with it.

  48. He said,

  49. I hated that word, justice of God.

  50. That justice by which God is just, and by which he punishes sinners and the unjust.

  51. I did not love.

  52. No, rather I hated the just God who punishes sinners.

  53. In silence, if I did not blaspheme, then certainly I grumbled vehemently and got angry at God.

  54. He was so afraid of God's judgment that he joined the Augustinian monks in an effort to make himself a better person in the hope that he would become acceptable to God.

  55. You see, the church that he grew up in had taught him that, well, you had to earn your way to God.

  56. You had to earn your salvation.

  57. So by doing things like going to confession, taking communion, praying to the saints, doing good deeds, you earned favour with God.

  58. In some sense, you earned grace from God.

  59. So in response to all your good things, God would give you some grace that would enable you and help you, equip you to be a more righteous kind of person.

  60. And the more grace that you received, the more righteous you became and the closer you got to salvation.

  61. It was salvation by works or salvation by efforts.

  62. The problem with that was you were never sure if you had done enough.

  63. You were never sure if God would accept you.

  64. In fact, trying to earn our salvation would always lead to that experience that Martin Luther had a terrible fear and a hatred of God's judgment.

  65. But as Luther began to read his Bible, and especially as he read the book of Romans, which we have just read together,

  66. he rediscovered the wonderful truth that salvation was not earned by our works,

  67. but was something that you received by faith in Jesus Christ.

  68. He came to discover that you didn't need to fear or be terrified of God's judgment.

  69. Here's how he put it, which is very helpful.

  70. He said, on the one hand, Christ is full of grace and life and salvation.

  71. On the other hand, speaking of himself and all people, the soul is full of sins, death and damnation.

  72. Then he says, now let faith come between them both.

  73. Let faith come between them and sins, death and damnation will become Christ's,

  74. while grace, life and salvation will be the soul's.

  75. There's a transfer, an exchange, which happens by faith.

  76. So he came to discover that faith was the key.

  77. Faith is the means by which we receive salvation.

  78. And this rediscovered truth can be summarized, which is in your handouts or in your news sheets, you can see it there.

  79. Salvation is according to scripture alone, so the source is God's word.

  80. It's in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, to the glory of God alone.

  81. And we're going to be thinking about what it means to have faith in Christ alone.

  82. Let's see how that is true from the passage that we read together in Romans.

  83. Look at verse 27, chapter 3, verse 27.

  84. Where then is boasting?

  85. If salvation is all by faith, can anybody boast and say, I've earned it?

  86. Is there anybody here in this room who thinks they can earn their salvation before God by being a better person?

  87. Is there anyone here who can look at their life and all the things that they have not done and all the things they have done and say,

  88. you know what, I've lived such a good life that God is going to accept me.

  89. Well, what does verse 27 say?

  90. Where then is boasting?

  91. Well, it's excluded.

  92. In other words, nobody can boast.

  93. On what principle or on what basis?

  94. On that of observing the law by doing good things?

  95. No.

  96. But on that of faith.

  97. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

  98. He's making a statement that we don't earn salvation.

  99. We receive it by faith.

  100. And to help us understand what that means to receive salvation by faith, we're going to look at it under three headings.

  101. Here's the first one.

  102. Declared righteous.

  103. Let's read verse 28 again.

  104. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith.

  105. So that's the little phrase justified by faith apart from observing the law.

  106. Now, to be justified by faith means to be declared righteous by God.

  107. It's a legal term.

  108. Here's what one writer said to explain it, which is very helpful.

  109. It's the exact opposite of condemnation.

  110. So to condemn is to declare somebody guilty.

  111. To justify is to declare them righteous.

  112. And in the Bible it refers to God's act of unmerited favour or God's act of grace by which God puts a sinner right with himself,

  113. not only acquitting him, but accepting and treating him as righteous.

  114. Now, most of Romans up to this point before chapter 3 has been showing us that every single person is not righteous.

  115. That we are guilty before God.

  116. Let's have a look at what that looks like.

  117. Look at chapter 1, verse 18.

  118. Chapter 1, verse 18.

  119. So it says there,

  120. The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

  121. So God is rightly angry with all the unrighteous behaviour,

  122. all the wickedness, the evil, the godlessness that we see in the world.

  123. All around us, all the time.

  124. And we're included in that.

  125. Because instead of turning back to God and running to God for help,

  126. we've run further away from God.

  127. So chapter 2, verse 5.

  128. Chapter 2, verse 5.

  129. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart,

  130. you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath,

  131. when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

  132. And instead of getting better,

  133. and again, instead of running back to God in repentance,

  134. we've gotten worse.

  135. In fact, there is no desire within us to want God.

  136. So look at chapter 3, verse 9.

  137. Chapter 3, verse 9.

  138. What shall we conclude then?

  139. Are we any better?

  140. Not at all.

  141. We have already made the charge that Jews,

  142. that is religious people,

  143. or Gentiles,

  144. non-religious people,

  145. everybody,

  146. whoever we are,

  147. we're all the same.

  148. We're all under sin.

  149. As it is written,

  150. there is no one righteous,

  151. not even one.

  152. There is no one who understands,

  153. no one who seeks God.

  154. All have turned away.

  155. They have together become worthless.

  156. There is no one who does good,

  157. not even one.

  158. You see,

  159. even if we wanted to be good people,

  160. even if we wanted to improve ourselves,

  161. by ourselves,

  162. we can't.

  163. No matter how hard we try,

  164. we cannot be better people.

  165. And what does all that mean?

  166. Well, look at chapter 3, verse 20.

  167. Therefore,

  168. no one,

  169. no one,

  170. will be declared righteous

  171. in God's sight

  172. by observing the law,

  173. by doing good things.

  174. So it leaves us in a predicament,

  175. in a great difficulty.

  176. But the good news of the gospel is,

  177. is that God declares us to be righteous.

  178. So look down at verse 28,

  179. chapter 3, verse 28,

  180. what we just read.

  181. For we maintain

  182. that a person is justified

  183. by faith

  184. apart from observing the law.

  185. So there is a way

  186. to be made righteous.

  187. And it's something that God does for us.

  188. In other words,

  189. God gives us a righteousness

  190. that is not ours.

  191. So we who are unrighteous,

  192. guilty,

  193. deserving of God's judgment,

  194. by faith,

  195. are now declared righteous,

  196. not guilty,

  197. and free from God's judgment.

  198. Again, look how Martin Luther

  199. puts it.

  200. He says,

  201. there is a righteousness

  202. that God imputes

  203. or attributes to us

  204. apart from works.

  205. In other words,

  206. it is a passive righteousness.

  207. So it's not something we work for,

  208. something we earn.

  209. He asks the question,

  210. so then,

  211. have we nothing to do

  212. to obtain this righteousness?

  213. No,

  214. nothing at all.

  215. For this righteousness

  216. comes by doing nothing,

  217. hearing nothing,

  218. knowing nothing,

  219. but rather in knowing

  220. and believing this only,

  221. that Christ has gone

  222. to the right hand of the Father

  223. not to become our judge,

  224. but to become for us

  225. our righteousness,

  226. our salvation.

  227. So you see,

  228. I do not make myself righteous,

  229. rather God declares me

  230. to be righteous.

  231. He doesn't make me righteous

  232. as a process over time.

  233. It's an immediate act.

  234. He declares me

  235. just as a judge

  236. would pronounce in court

  237. to somebody,

  238. you are not guilty.

  239. So God declares us

  240. to be absolutely righteous.

  241. Now,

  242. we must understand

  243. that what that means is

  244. it's a change in our status,

  245. not a change in our nature.

  246. That means,

  247. on the one hand,

  248. we will always be righteous

  249. before God

  250. if our faith is in God.

  251. We will always be righteous

  252. in our status.

  253. That is never going to change.

  254. But at the same time,

  255. we will always be sinful

  256. in our nature.

  257. Always righteous

  258. in our status,

  259. but at the same time,

  260. always sinful

  261. in our nature.

  262. So as God looks upon us,

  263. as God views me,

  264. he looks at me,

  265. he says,

  266. you are righteous.

  267. Yes,

  268. you fail

  269. and you mess up

  270. and you do things

  271. that are wrong,

  272. but you know what?

  273. The sins,

  274. the failure,

  275. that will never ever

  276. change your status.

  277. we have been declared

  278. righteous by God

  279. and that will not change

  280. because of my sinful behaviour.

  281. We are justified,

  282. declared righteous,

  283. not guilty,

  284. by faith in him.

  285. So that's the first thing

  286. that we need to understand.

  287. That we are justified

  288. by faith,

  289. that first of all means

  290. we have been declared

  291. righteous,

  292. not guilty,

  293. before God.

  294. The second thing

  295. that we need to understand

  296. that this faith

  297. is faith in Jesus.

  298. We are declared righteous

  299. by faith

  300. in Jesus.

  301. Have a look at chapter 3,

  302. verse 22.

  303. This righteousness

  304. from God

  305. comes through faith

  306. in Jesus Christ

  307. to all who believe.

  308. The same is said

  309. at the end of verse 26.

  310. The one who justifies

  311. those who have faith

  312. in Jesus.

  313. So our faith

  314. is not just faith

  315. in an abstract

  316. or kind of a...

  317. We describe sometimes

  318. people say,

  319. oh I've got faith.

  320. Well,

  321. where is that faith

  322. placed?

  323. It must be faith

  324. that is placed

  325. in the person

  326. of Jesus Christ.

  327. And this is the same

  328. for everybody.

  329. Have a look down

  330. at verse 29.

  331. Is God

  332. the God of Jews only?

  333. Is this only applying

  334. to people

  335. who are religious?

  336. Is he not

  337. the God

  338. of Gentiles

  339. or irreligious,

  340. non-religious people too?

  341. Those who don't

  342. read the Bible

  343. or go to church?

  344. Yes,

  345. of Gentiles too.

  346. Since there is

  347. only one God

  348. who will justify,

  349. who will declare

  350. people right before God,

  351. the circumcised,

  352. the religious people,

  353. by faith,

  354. and the uncircumcised,

  355. the non-religious,

  356. through that same faith.

  357. So it's exactly

  358. the same for everybody,

  359. whoever we are,

  360. whatever culture

  361. we were raised in,

  362. whatever our religious

  363. background might have been,

  364. whatever our racial identity,

  365. it is the same

  366. for every single person.

  367. The only way

  368. we can be declared

  369. right before God

  370. is by faith

  371. in the person

  372. of Jesus Christ.

  373. Now,

  374. faith isn't just

  375. an intellectual exercise

  376. saying something like,

  377. oh yes,

  378. I have faith in Jesus,

  379. I believe Jesus exists,

  380. and I have kind of

  381. a faith in him.

  382. No,

  383. it's a trusting exercise.

  384. It's a personal trust

  385. or reliance,

  386. a complete dependence

  387. on the person of Jesus.

  388. Jesus.

  389. And our trust is in Jesus

  390. that his righteous life

  391. becomes my righteous life.

  392. Let me try and explain

  393. that for you.

  394. When you go for a job interview,

  395. or if you can remember

  396. back to the last time

  397. you had a job interview,

  398. you bring with you

  399. your CV.

  400. CV.

  401. And it's a record

  402. of your complete performance

  403. over your life so far.

  404. It has a list

  405. of all your grades,

  406. how well you've done

  407. in school,

  408. in college,

  409. all the points

  410. that you earned.

  411. It might tell you

  412. the position

  413. that you had

  414. in your last job

  415. or any promotion

  416. that you got

  417. and how that was deserved.

  418. And whether you get

  419. that job or not

  420. will depend

  421. on how well

  422. you've performed

  423. in the past

  424. and how well

  425. you perform

  426. in the interview.

  427. So you get the job

  428. completely by merit,

  429. by all your performances

  430. over time.

  431. But when it comes

  432. to our salvation,

  433. when it comes

  434. to the record

  435. of our life,

  436. our CV,

  437. if you like,

  438. before God,

  439. it's not good enough.

  440. The grades

  441. that we have scored,

  442. the points

  443. that we have built up,

  444. all the times

  445. I've been to church,

  446. all the times

  447. that I've told people

  448. about Jesus,

  449. all the times

  450. that I've prayed,

  451. all the good things

  452. that I've done,

  453. it will count

  454. for nothing.

  455. Zero.

  456. So in God's grace,

  457. in his goodness,

  458. what he does

  459. is he offers us

  460. the free gift

  461. of Christ's

  462. performance record.

  463. So what God does

  464. is he gives us

  465. the CV of Jesus.

  466. He credits us

  467. with the performance

  468. of Jesus Christ.

  469. He gives us

  470. the righteousness

  471. of Christ

  472. in place

  473. of our

  474. unrighteousness.

  475. That is what it means

  476. to have faith

  477. in Jesus.

  478. We're given two examples

  479. of what that true

  480. faith looks like.

  481. Have a look at

  482. chapter 4.

  483. Two great heroes,

  484. Abraham

  485. and David.

  486. Two religious people.

  487. And if anybody

  488. was going to make it

  489. to God,

  490. well,

  491. they would.

  492. And how did they do it?

  493. Well, let's look at

  494. the first example,

  495. chapter 4, verse 1.

  496. What then shall we say

  497. that Abraham,

  498. our forefather,

  499. discovered in this matter?

  500. If, in fact,

  501. Abraham was justified

  502. by works,

  503. he had something

  504. to boast about.

  505. But not before God.

  506. So the question

  507. here before us is,

  508. what did Abraham do

  509. to earn his salvation?

  510. Well, the answer is

  511. absolutely nothing.

  512. There was nothing

  513. that he could point to

  514. in his life

  515. that he had done

  516. or said

  517. that would earn

  518. favour with God.

  519. He simply believed

  520. in what God said

  521. he would do.

  522. Verse 3.

  523. What does Scripture say?

  524. Abraham believed God.

  525. He had faith in God

  526. and it was credited

  527. to him

  528. as righteousness.

  529. He did not trust

  530. in his own righteousness

  531. or in his own record,

  532. but in God's gift

  533. of righteousness.

  534. Another example

  535. we're given in verse 6.

  536. David,

  537. King David,

  538. another hero

  539. of the faith.

  540. David says the same thing

  541. when he speaks

  542. of the blessedness

  543. of the person

  544. to whom God credits

  545. righteousness

  546. apart from works.

  547. Blessed are they

  548. whose transgressions

  549. are forgiven,

  550. whose sins

  551. are covered.

  552. Blessed is the man

  553. whose sin

  554. the Lord

  555. will never

  556. count

  557. against him.

  558. That is what it is

  559. to receive

  560. the righteousness

  561. of God.

  562. It means that

  563. God does not

  564. look upon us

  565. the way our sins

  566. show us up to be.

  567. He never holds

  568. our sin

  569. over us

  570. or against us.

  571. They have been

  572. removed completely.

  573. David did not

  574. trust in his

  575. own righteousness,

  576. but in the gift

  577. of God's

  578. righteousness.

  579. It's what we call

  580. the great exchange.

  581. By faith,

  582. our record

  583. is given

  584. to Christ

  585. and Christ's

  586. record is

  587. completely

  588. given over

  589. to us.

  590. So Christ

  591. takes all

  592. our unrighteousness,

  593. the complete

  594. record of how

  595. we've lived

  596. before God,

  597. all our

  598. disobedience

  599. is taken

  600. from us

  601. and placed

  602. upon Christ.

  603. And in

  604. exchange for

  605. that,

  606. by faith,

  607. all the

  608. righteousness,

  609. the complete

  610. record of

  611. Christ's

  612. perfect life,

  613. his perfect

  614. obedience,

  615. is now

  616. transferred

  617. and

  618. credited

  619. to us.

  620. It's the

  621. complete exchange,

  622. my unrighteous

  623. life,

  624. for Christ's

  625. unrighteous

  626. life.

  627. Now that

  628. means,

  629. as we've been

  630. saying,

  631. that we are

  632. now declared

  633. righteous,

  634. not guilty

  635. before God.

  636. But that

  637. does not

  638. mean

  639. that we

  640. are perfect,

  641. that we

  642. never ever

  643. sin.

  644. It does

  645. mean that

  646. our position

  647. before God

  648. has changed,

  649. our status

  650. before him

  651. is clear,

  652. we now have

  653. the record

  654. of his

  655. righteousness,

  656. so as God

  657. looks at us,

  658. we are

  659. perfectly

  660. right.

  661. But,

  662. it means

  663. that I

  664. will continue

  665. to sin,

  666. I will

  667. continue to

  668. mess up.

  669. There will

  670. be an

  671. ongoing

  672. change and

  673. process in

  674. that as I

  675. become more

  676. like Christ,

  677. but I

  678. will still

  679. sin.

  680. And that

  681. can be a

  682. complication

  683. for us,

  684. because sometimes

  685. we think,

  686. I'm declared

  687. righteous before

  688. God,

  689. God looks

  690. upon me as

  691. not guilty,

  692. but I do

  693. sin and I

  694. am guilty.

  695. How is God

  696. going to treat

  697. me now,

  698. because I've

  699. messed up?

  700. Well,

  701. listen to

  702. this,

  703. again from

  704. Martin Luther,

  705. although I

  706. still sin,

  707. I

  708. don't

  709. despair,

  710. because Christ

  711. lives,

  712. who is both

  713. my righteousness

  714. and my

  715. eternal life.

  716. In that

  717. righteousness,

  718. in Christ's

  719. righteousness,

  720. I have no

  721. sin,

  722. no fear,

  723. no guilty

  724. conscience,

  725. no fear of

  726. death.

  727. I am

  728. indeed a

  729. sinner in

  730. this life

  731. of mine

  732. and in

  733. my own

  734. righteousness,

  735. but I

  736. have another

  737. life,

  738. another

  739. righteousness

  740. above this

  741. life,

  742. which is

  743. Christ,

  744. the Son

  745. of God.

  746. So can

  747. you see

  748. what he's

  749. saying there,

  750. that at

  751. one level,

  752. yes,

  753. I have a

  754. status before

  755. God,

  756. declared

  757. righteous,

  758. that will

  759. never ever

  760. change.

  761. No matter

  762. how many

  763. times I

  764. sin or

  765. fail or

  766. mess up,

  767. God will

  768. always see

  769. me as

  770. not guilty.

  771. That's a

  772. wonderful

  773. truth,

  774. a wonderful

  775. way to

  776. live life.

  777. On the

  778. other

  779. hand,

  780. my sinful

  781. nature is

  782. I will

  783. continue to

  784. mess up,

  785. I will

  786. continue to

  787. fail.

  788. Yes,

  789. we continually

  790. need God's

  791. grace and

  792. strength and

  793. help and

  794. the power of

  795. his spirit to

  796. put sin to

  797. death.

  798. That will

  799. always be an

  800. ongoing struggle.

  801. But if our

  802. faith is in the

  803. Lord Jesus,

  804. know this

  805. today,

  806. you are

  807. declared

  808. righteous,

  809. righteous,

  810. no matter

  811. how much

  812. you sin.

  813. So,

  814. we are

  815. declared

  816. righteous by

  817. God through

  818. our faith in

  819. Jesus Christ.

  820. So, it all

  821. depends on

  822. having enough

  823. faith.

  824. If I have

  825. enough faith,

  826. then I will

  827. be saved.

  828. Right?

  829. If I've got

  830. enough faith

  831. within myself,

  832. I can be

  833. saved.

  834. Is that

  835. right?

  836. It's wrong.

  837. You see,

  838. the danger is

  839. we think that

  840. faith is

  841. something that

  842. I have.

  843. It comes from

  844. within me.

  845. I can muster

  846. it up myself.

  847. I can kind

  848. of spur

  849. myself on

  850. to faith.

  851. But that's

  852. wrong.

  853. Faith is

  854. also a

  855. gift from

  856. God.

  857. Look at

  858. verse 27,

  859. chapter 3,

  860. back to

  861. verse 27.

  862. where

  863. then

  864. is the

  865. boasting?

  866. Where's

  867. the boasting?

  868. If we can

  869. say, I

  870. did it.

  871. I earned

  872. my salvation.

  873. He's saying,

  874. nobody should

  875. boast.

  876. Let me put it

  877. this way.

  878. If somebody

  879. asks you

  880. why you are

  881. a Christian,

  882. so if you're

  883. a Christian

  884. here, and

  885. somebody comes

  886. up and says,

  887. why are you

  888. a Christian?

  889. And you

  890. answer and

  891. respond something

  892. like this,

  893. because of

  894. my faith,

  895. or because

  896. I had

  897. faith,

  898. you're

  899. actually

  900. boasting.

  901. You're saying,

  902. I have

  903. faith.

  904. It's me.

  905. My faith

  906. saved me.

  907. I had the

  908. ability to

  909. respond to

  910. God.

  911. I saw what

  912. God was

  913. saying and

  914. what I was

  915. like and

  916. what I

  917. needed and

  918. I mustered

  919. up that

  920. faith and

  921. I trusted

  922. in God.

  923. So it's

  924. my faith.

  925. But that's

  926. boasting.

  927. That's saying

  928. it's coming

  929. from me.

  930. Salvation

  931. no longer

  932. becomes God's

  933. gift, but

  934. something we

  935. deserve because

  936. of my ability

  937. to have

  938. faith.

  939. But that's

  940. wrong.

  941. Let me try

  942. and explain

  943. that a bit

  944. more.

  945. Sometimes we

  946. can treat

  947. faith like

  948. our Tesco

  949. club cards

  950. or whichever

  951. shop you

  952. go to.

  953. You have

  954. your little

  955. plastic card,

  956. you buy

  957. some things,

  958. it scans

  959. in and

  960. you get

  961. points put

  962. onto your

  963. card.

  964. And after

  965. so many

  966. weeks or

  967. so many

  968. items of

  969. buying

  970. things,

  971. you can

  972. cash in

  973. your points

  974. and get

  975. your shopping

  976. for free.

  977. Except for

  978. it's not

  979. really free,

  980. is it?

  981. The selling

  982. point says

  983. it's free,

  984. but in

  985. reality you've

  986. had to pay

  987. for all of

  988. those points

  989. in your

  990. previous shops.

  991. And then

  992. what you do

  993. is you

  994. exchange

  995. those points

  996. and you

  997. get a

  998. free bag

  999. of spuds

  1000. or whatever,

  1001. something like

  1002. that.

  1003. Now in

  1004. the same

  1005. way we

  1006. can think

  1007. that we

  1008. have to

  1009. cash in

  1010. our faith

  1011. to God.

  1012. We kind

  1013. of earn

  1014. some faith

  1015. along the

  1016. way,

  1017. we add

  1018. to our

  1019. faith

  1020. points by

  1021. doing good

  1022. and right

  1023. things,

  1024. and when

  1025. we've

  1026. built up

  1027. enough

  1028. faith

  1029. points,

  1030. then we

  1031. can cash

  1032. it in

  1033. and God

  1034. in return

  1035. gives us

  1036. his salvation.

  1037. I've got

  1038. enough faith

  1039. today,

  1040. I feel

  1041. I've got

  1042. that faith,

  1043. so I

  1044. cash it

  1045. in and

  1046. God accepts

  1047. me and

  1048. God loves

  1049. me and

  1050. I know

  1051. I'm saved.

  1052. But on the

  1053. days where

  1054. I'm not

  1055. quite so

  1056. sure I

  1057. haven't got

  1058. enough faith,

  1059. I can't

  1060. quite cash

  1061. it in

  1062. yet,

  1063. and where

  1064. am I?

  1065. faith is

  1066. measured

  1067. like that.

  1068. Faith is

  1069. a gift

  1070. from God,

  1071. a faith

  1072. that is

  1073. complete

  1074. and sufficient

  1075. and enough

  1076. that comes

  1077. from God.

  1078. So look

  1079. at chapter

  1080. four,

  1081. verse

  1082. four.

  1083. Now

  1084. when a

  1085. man works,

  1086. so when

  1087. you go

  1088. to your

  1089. job in

  1090. the morning,

  1091. his wages

  1092. are not

  1093. credited to

  1094. him as a

  1095. gift,

  1096. but as

  1097. an obligation.

  1098. So when

  1099. you get

  1100. your weekly

  1101. or your

  1102. monthly

  1103. wages,

  1104. it's not

  1105. a gift

  1106. that your

  1107. boss comes

  1108. and says

  1109. here's

  1110. something I'd

  1111. like to

  1112. give to

  1113. you.

  1114. No,

  1115. you earned

  1116. it by

  1117. your hard

  1118. work,

  1119. you deserve

  1120. it,

  1121. it's yours

  1122. by right,

  1123. it came

  1124. by your

  1125. effort,

  1126. your boss

  1127. is obliged

  1128. to give

  1129. you what

  1130. is owed

  1131. to you.

  1132. It's not

  1133. a gift.

  1134. However,

  1135. look at

  1136. verse five,

  1137. to the

  1138. man who

  1139. does not

  1140. work,

  1141. but trusts

  1142. God,

  1143. who justifies

  1144. the wicked,

  1145. his faith

  1146. is credited

  1147. as righteousness.

  1148. You see,

  1149. when we

  1150. receive

  1151. righteousness,

  1152. it's a

  1153. gift from

  1154. God,

  1155. it's something

  1156. we don't

  1157. earn or

  1158. deserve,

  1159. we're not

  1160. cashing in

  1161. our hard

  1162. earned

  1163. faith,

  1164. it is a

  1165. gift from

  1166. God.

  1167. God,

  1168. so that

  1169. implies

  1170. that even

  1171. faith itself

  1172. is something

  1173. that God

  1174. gives to

  1175. us so

  1176. that we

  1177. are enabled

  1178. to receive

  1179. righteousness.

  1180. So it's

  1181. never dependent

  1182. about how

  1183. great or

  1184. how high or

  1185. how low

  1186. my faith

  1187. is,

  1188. or how

  1189. great my

  1190. faith is,

  1191. but the

  1192. faith that

  1193. God gives

  1194. me to

  1195. enable me

  1196. to believe

  1197. and trust

  1198. so that

  1199. I can

  1200. be declared

  1201. righteous,

  1202. not guilty

  1203. in God's

  1204. sight.

  1205. Well,

  1206. you're sitting

  1207. there going,

  1208. well,

  1209. where do I

  1210. get this

  1211. faith from?

  1212. How can I

  1213. have this

  1214. faith for

  1215. myself?

  1216. Well,

  1217. that answer,

  1218. or that

  1219. question is

  1220. answered if

  1221. you go to

  1222. chapter 10.

  1223. Have a look

  1224. there just

  1225. briefly.

  1226. Romans

    Romans 10:13

  1227. chapter 10,

  1228. verse 13.

  1229. Here's where

  1230. we get an

  1231. answer to

  1232. that question.

  1233. Well,

  1234. how do I

  1235. get that

  1236. faith?

  1237. Where does

  1238. faith come

  1239. from for

  1240. me to be

  1241. able to

  1242. believe?

  1243. So let's

  1244. pick it up

  1245. in chapter

  1246. 10,

  1247. verse 13.

  1248. He makes

  1249. this statement.

  1250. Everyone,

  1251. religious or

  1252. non-religious,

  1253. who calls

  1254. on the name

  1255. of the Lord,

  1256. that is,

  1257. when it says

  1258. calls,

  1259. that is,

  1260. who has

  1261. faith or

  1262. trusts in

  1263. the name

  1264. of the

  1265. Lord,

  1266. will be

  1267. saved.

  1268. So we

  1269. can agree

  1270. with that,

  1271. we get

  1272. that.

  1273. Everybody

  1274. who has

  1275. faith in

  1276. the name

  1277. of the

  1278. Lord will

  1279. be saved.

  1280. Where does

  1281. faith come

  1282. from?

  1283. Well,

  1284. he answers

  1285. the question,

  1286. verse 14,

  1287. how then can

  1288. they call?

  1289. How can

  1290. they have

  1291. faith in

  1292. the one

  1293. they've

  1294. not

  1295. believed

  1296. in?

  1297. And how

  1298. can they

  1299. believe in

  1300. the one

  1301. of whom

  1302. they've

  1303. not heard?

  1304. And how

  1305. can they

  1306. hear without

  1307. somebody

  1308. preaching to

  1309. them?

  1310. And how

  1311. can somebody

  1312. preach unless

  1313. they are

  1314. sent?

  1315. As it is

  1316. written,

  1317. how beautiful

  1318. are the

  1319. feet of

  1320. those who

  1321. bring good

  1322. news.

  1323. But not

  1324. all the

  1325. Israelites

  1326. accepted the

  1327. good news.

  1328. For Isaiah

  1329. said,

  1330. Lord,

  1331. who has

  1332. believed

  1333. our message?

  1334. So how

  1335. can we

  1336. have this

  1337. faith?

  1338. How can

  1339. we believe?

  1340. Well,

  1341. the answer,

  1342. verse 17,

  1343. consequently,

  1344. faith comes

  1345. from hearing

  1346. the message.

  1347. And the

  1348. message is

  1349. heard through

  1350. the word

  1351. of Christ.

  1352. So,

  1353. as we're

  1354. reading

  1355. scripture,

  1356. as we're

  1357. reading the

  1358. good news

  1359. about Jesus

  1360. Christ,

  1361. as you

  1362. listen,

  1363. as you

  1364. hear,

  1365. so God

  1366. is at work

  1367. in at the

  1368. same time

  1369. by his

  1370. Holy Spirit,

  1371. that as we

  1372. hear the

  1373. good news

  1374. about Jesus,

  1375. God,

  1376. by his

  1377. Spirit,

  1378. gives us

  1379. faith that

  1380. we may be

  1381. able to

  1382. respond to

  1383. him.

  1384. Other parts

  1385. of the

  1386. Bible talk

  1387. about it,

  1388. rebirth,

  1389. a renewing

  1390. of our

  1391. life.

  1392. God gives

  1393. us faith.

  1394. As we hear

  1395. the good news

  1396. of Jesus

  1397. explained,

  1398. God works

  1399. through his

  1400. word by his

  1401. Spirit and

  1402. enables us

  1403. to have

  1404. faith and

  1405. to trust

  1406. in him.

  1407. So,

  1408. maybe you're

  1409. here this

  1410. morning,

  1411. you're thinking,

  1412. I always

  1413. feel guilty

  1414. before God.

  1415. Maybe you've

  1416. never trusted

  1417. him.

  1418. And as you

  1419. hear,

  1420. we can cry

  1421. out to God

  1422. and say,

  1423. give me that

  1424. faith that I

  1425. might trust

  1426. in him

  1427. alone.

  1428. Maybe,

  1429. on the other

  1430. hand,

  1431. you struggle

  1432. with your

  1433. sinful life

  1434. and you're

  1435. always bogged

  1436. down by the

  1437. fact that,

  1438. well,

  1439. I do

  1440. sin and

  1441. I get

  1442. things wrong

  1443. and I'm

  1444. so guilty.

  1445. We need

  1446. to look at

  1447. how God

  1448. views us,

  1449. that he

  1450. declares us

  1451. as righteous

  1452. in his

  1453. sight,

  1454. a gift

  1455. from God

  1456. through faith

  1457. in the Lord

  1458. Jesus and

  1459. that status

  1460. will never

  1461. change.

  1462. You are

  1463. his forever,

  1464. which will

  1465. enable you

  1466. and encourage

  1467. you to go

  1468. on living

  1469. for him,

  1470. knowing that

  1471. we do not

  1472. have to sin

  1473. any longer.

  1474. So,

  1475. faith alone,

  1476. it's faith

  1477. in the person

  1478. of Jesus

  1479. Christ and

  1480. as we

  1481. exercise that

  1482. gift of

  1483. faith from

  1484. God,

  1485. we are

  1486. declared

  1487. righteous

  1488. in his

  1489. sight.

  1490. Let's pray

  1491. together.

  1492. God,

  1493. we are

  1494. you

  1495. guilty

  1496. of

  1497. you

  1498. you

  1499. you

  1500. you

  1501. you
