  1. Maria is going to come and read this morning. It's on page 1131 if you're using a church Bible.

  2. Okay, Romans chapter 11, verse 33.

    Romans 11:33

  3. Oh, the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God.

  4. How unsearchable his judgments and his paths beyond tracing out.

  5. Who has known the mind of the Lord?

  6. Who has been his counselor?

  7. Who has ever given to God that God should repay him?

  8. For from him and through him and to him are all things.

  9. To him be the glory forever. Amen.

  10. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, and in view of God's mercy,

  11. to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.

  12. And this is your spiritual act of worship.

  13. Thanks, Maria.

  14. Alex is just handing around some pens and there's a piece of paper.

  15. If you want to take notes as well, it's got headings, which you can follow along if you want to take that.

  16. And just to remind you that today we come to the end of our little mini series, which we call Glorious Salvation.

  17. And some of those themes that we've been looking at will be the theme of our Summer Bible Week.

  18. So I hope it's given a taste in some ways of that.

  19. So come along to the Summer Bible Week, which is in July.

  20. Put that into your diary.

  21. The lectures are repeated morning and evening.

  22. So if you can't get to the morning, you can go in the evening.

  23. Don't forget to pick up your summer program as well.

  24. And you'll see on the inside that during the month of July and August, there are different people who will be preaching.

  25. Some names you will recognize, others you won't.

  26. But they are all related in some way to Munster Bible College and those who have been teaching or helping at that.

  27. So do come along during the months of July and August.

  28. Pray for those who will be preaching and teaching.

  29. Let's pray and ask for God's help as we look at his word together.

  30. Our God, you are great and you are glorious.

  31. For you have done good and mighty things.

  32. Father, we pray that you would give us a fresh glimpse.

  33. Paint a picture upon our hearts and upon our minds.

  34. Engrave your salvation deep upon our lives.

  35. That we may see the wonder, the beauty, the magnificence of you, Lord Jesus.

  36. And that in response, we would be a people who live for your glory.

  37. Amen.

  38. We ask for your help to us today.

  39. In Jesus' name.

  40. Amen.

  41. I don't know about you, but art was really never my strongest subject.

  42. In fact, it was terrible.

  43. And that caused a bit of a problem because exam time was getting close.

  44. Running out of ideas, I went to one of the art rooms and collected all the leftover drawings

  45. and put them neatly into a folder, all belonging to other people.

  46. And the day came when we had to hand up our work and I proudly presented my work.

  47. And I passed.

  48. I took all the praise and all the glory for something that was not mine.

  49. I robbed the glory that belonged to someone else.

  50. Now, when it comes to our salvation, we can claim the glory for ourselves.

  51. We can look upon it as something that I achieve.

  52. God accepts me because I obey him.

  53. God loves me because, well, I love him.

  54. God saves me because I chose him.

  55. It's all about me and what I've done.

  56. It's my performance, my effort.

  57. It's what I deserve.

  58. But every time we say I in regard to salvation,

  59. we are stealing or robbing the glory from God.

  60. Rather than God being great and awesome and magnificent,

  61. well, then I become great.

  62. It's to Johnny be the glory forever.

  63. Amen.

  64. It's taking praise and glory for something that is not mine.

  65. You see, when it comes to our salvation,

  66. God alone should get all the glory.

  67. Have a look at verse 36, Romans 11, verse 36.

    Romans 11:36

  68. This little section here, maybe it has a little title,

  69. verses 33 to 36, it has doxology.

  70. Maybe that's the title.

  71. It's not inspired, it's not from God,

  72. but somebody has put it in afterwards.

  73. But really, it's just a hymn of praise, of exaltation,

  74. a great outburst of uncontained emotion towards God.

  75. And it comes at the very end of 11 chapters

  76. that has gone into great detail,

  77. showing us and detailing to us God's amazing gift of salvation.

  78. And as he traces God's plan of salvation,

  79. he gets to the end and he can't help but just burst out in praise.

  80. And here's what Paul, the author, says in verse 36.

  81. Thinking of God's amazing salvation, verse 36.

  82. For from him and through him and to him are all things.

  83. To him, to God, be the glory forever. Amen.

  84. Salvation is planned by God, provided by God,

  85. purposed by God, so God gets all the glory.

  86. Martin Luther, our friend that we've been looking at over these weeks,

  87. now with the Lord, of course,

  88. rediscovered that salvation was nothing to do with us,

  89. it was all of God.

  90. And here he bursts into praise as he contemplates and thinks about it,

  91. follow along as I read.

  92. He says,

  93. Christ, the Son of God, was given,

  94. not for the righteous and holy,

  95. but for the unrighteous and sinners.

  96. If I were righteous and had no sin,

  97. I should have no need of Christ to be my reconciler.

  98. Therefore, let us praise God the Father

  99. and give him a hearty thanks.

  100. For this his immeasurable mercy,

  101. that he has delivered us out of the kingdom of the devil

  102. by his own Son,

  103. when such was impossible to be done by our own strength.

  104. Let us extol and magnify the glory of Christ,

  105. who has delivered us into the kingdom of Christ,

  106. to whom be glory world without end.

  107. Amen.

  108. So who gets all the glory?

  109. God alone.

  110. Well, let's see how all this is true.

  111. We're going to look at two big ideas.

  112. First, we're going to see the glory of God displayed,

  113. and then we're going to look at the glory of God declared.

  114. So the glory of God displayed.

  115. I want you to imagine

  116. that you're walking through an art gallery,

  117. maybe like the Louvre in Paris

  118. or some other national art gallery.

  119. And as you walk through the different rooms,

  120. you're confronted by all these amazing pictures on the wall,

  121. all by famous artists throughout the centuries.

  122. Each portrait, each scene that you look at,

  123. just takes your breath away.

  124. Well, these verses, verses 33 to 36,

  125. is like walking into the art gallery of God.

  126. On display as we walk through our pictures

  127. and scenes of God's salvation,

  128. each one reflects the glory and the beauty

  129. and the magnificence and the power of God.

  130. And every scene that you look at

  131. causes you to stop and gaze in wonder

  132. and worship of what an almighty God we have.

  133. So let's walk through the gallery of God's glory together.

  134. Three things we see as we look at God's glory.

  135. First, the riches of God.

  136. That's the first scene that we're confronted with.

  137. The riches of God.

  138. Look at verse 33.

  139. Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God.

  140. On display before us is the deep, never-ending riches

  141. of God's goodness and kindness towards us.

  142. There we stand, as it were, in the gallery,

  143. looking at God's riches before us,

  144. and we are conscious of how deep and how great our own sin is.

  145. But as we gaze at his riches,

  146. we are overwhelmed by how deeper and greater God's grace is.

  147. It is like a wave that washes over us.

  148. Let me show you a glimpse of his riches.

  149. Go back to chapter 3, verse 22.

  150. The end of verse 22.

  151. Romans chapter 3, the end of verse 22.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  152. Talking about the human race of all people of all times.

  153. The end of verse 22.

  154. It says,

  155. There is no difference, for all have sinned,

  156. and all fall short of the glory of God.

  157. We simply do not measure up.

  158. But God, if you like, in his riches, verse 24,

  159. are justified.

  160. That is, we are declared not guilty,

  161. freely, by his grace,

  162. through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

  163. Move on, look at chapter 5, verse 17.

  164. We can so easily become overwhelmed

  165. by our own guilt and shame,

  166. but here, look at the riches again.

  167. Chapter 5, verse 17.

  168. For if by the trespass of one man,

  169. death reigns through that one man,

  170. how much more will those who receive

  171. God's abundant provision of grace

  172. and of the gift of righteousness

  173. reign in life through the one man,

  174. Jesus Christ.

  175. Here we see the riches of God,

  176. his wisdom,

  177. declaring us not guilty,

  178. the riches of his knowledge,

  179. knowing what we are like,

  180. but pouring out his grace upon us.

  181. Gaze and wonder

  182. at the magnificence of God.

  183. And as we gaze at that scene,

  184. we move on and we see another picture.

  185. We see the scene,

  186. the plan of God.

  187. Go back to Romans 11,

  188. and verse 33.

  189. We're going to be jumping backwards and forwards

  190. to get a picture of these things.

  191. So back to Romans 11, verse 33.

    Romans 11:33

  192. The end of verse 33.

  193. How unsearchable his judgments

  194. and his paths beyond tracing out.

  195. There before us,

  196. we see God's plan,

  197. his judgments,

  198. his paths,

  199. all his plans and decisions

  200. that he has made

  201. to bring about our salvation.

  202. So if you're here this morning

  203. and you're a Christian,

  204. look at God's plan

  205. through your life.

  206. You are a Christian,

  207. not by chance.

  208. It has been ordained by God

  209. from before time began

  210. and has been revealed to you

  211. by God's own design

  212. and you've come to experience it

  213. by the power of his Holy Spirit.

  214. And he wants us to stop

  215. and look at his plan.

  216. Look at verse 34.

  217. Who has known the mind of the Lord?

  218. Or who has been his counsellor?

  219. Did God ever draw alongside you

  220. and consult you

  221. and ask you what he should do

  222. as regards to saving the world?

  223. Did God come looking to you

  224. and ask you for advice

  225. and say,

  226. what should I do?

  227. Did God ever turn to you

  228. in a state of panic

  229. and say,

  230. help,

  231. what am I going to do

  232. to save this person?

  233. No.

  234. It all starts with God

  235. and it all ends with God.

  236. God acted out of his loving initiative

  237. and he intervened in our lives

  238. according to his will.

  239. Have a look back at chapter 5,

  240. verse 6.

  241. Just wonder here

  242. at God's plan

  243. as it unfolds before you.

  244. Chapter 5, verse 6.

  245. You see,

  246. at just the right time,

  247. when we were still powerless,

  248. Christ died for the ungodly.

  249. Very rarely will anyone die

  250. for a righteous person,

  251. though for a good person

  252. someone might possibly dare to die.

  253. but God demonstrates

  254. his own love for us

  255. in this,

  256. while we were still sinners,

  257. Christ died for us.

  258. God acted

  259. by his own will

  260. and decree

  261. in our lives.

  262. And the wonderful thing

  263. about God's plan

  264. of salvation is

  265. it cannot be undone,

  266. it cannot be overturned,

  267. it cannot be reversed.

  268. Look at these wonderful words.

  269. Chapter 8,

  270. verse 38.

  271. That God not only initiates

  272. and brings about our salvation,

  273. but he keeps our salvation.

  274. Chapter 8, verse 38.

  275. For I am convinced

  276. that neither death

  277. nor life,

  278. neither angels

  279. nor demons,

  280. neither the present

  281. or the future,

  282. nor any powers,

  283. neither heights,

  284. nor depth,

  285. nor anything else

  286. in creation.

  287. So whatever you could imagine,

  288. not even sin,

  289. not even Satan,

  290. not even suffering,

  291. will be able

  292. to separate us

  293. from the love of God

  294. that is in Christ Jesus,

  295. our Lord.

  296. Look at the plan of God.

  297. The magnificence

  298. of God's plan,

  299. initiating

  300. and securing

  301. our salvation

  302. from beginning

  303. to end.

  304. But we move on

  305. to another scene.

  306. Look at the gift

  307. of God.

  308. Go back to chapter 11,

  309. verse 35.

  310. Look at verse 35.

  311. Who has ever

  312. given

  313. to God

  314. that God

  315. should have

  316. to repay him?

  317. Just think,

  318. what did you bring

  319. to the table

  320. for your salvation?

  321. What did you contribute?

  322. What gift

  323. did you bring

  324. to God

  325. to say,

  326. here God,

  327. look at what I've done,

  328. now save me?

  329. What did I

  330. ever give

  331. to God

  332. that his arm

  333. was forced

  334. that he should

  335. ever have to give

  336. in return to me?

  337. Absolutely

  338. nothing.

  339. Our salvation

  340. is an extraordinary

  341. gift

  342. from God.

  343. Something God

  344. delights

  345. to do.

  346. Something God

  347. takes great pleasure

  348. in doing

  349. because he

  350. loves

  351. to do good.

  352. Go back

  353. to chapter 9,

  354. verse 16.

  355. So if ever

  356. we think

  357. it is something

  358. that we do

  359. or we have earned,

  360. look at chapter 9,

  361. verse 16.

  362. Speaking about

  363. our salvation,

  364. it does not

  365. therefore depend

  366. on man's

  367. desire

  368. or effort,

  369. but on

  370. God's

  371. mercy.

  372. Or look at

  373. chapter 11,

  374. verse 5.

  375. Speaking about

  376. God's continued

  377. working of salvation

  378. in people's life.

  379. Chapter 11,

  380. verse 5,

  381. so too

  382. at the present time

  383. there is a remnant,

  384. there are a people

  385. chosen

  386. by grace.

  387. And if by grace

  388. then it is

  389. no longer

  390. by works.

  391. If it were,

  392. grace

  393. would no longer

  394. be grace.

  395. There is

  396. nothing

  397. we have done

  398. to force

  399. God's

  400. favour.

  401. There is

  402. nothing we can

  403. do to win

  404. his approval.

  405. There is

  406. nothing we

  407. will ever

  408. become

  409. that God

  410. is going

  411. to look

  412. and say

  413. I love

  414. you more.

  415. God

  416. owes us

  417. nothing

  418. but in

  419. his grace

  420. he has

  421. reached out

  422. to us

  423. and welcomed

  424. us

  425. and treasured

  426. us

  427. and saved

  428. us

  429. because he

  430. delights

  431. in pouring

  432. out his

  433. grace

  434. upon us.

  435. So here

  436. in chapter 11

  437. is this

  438. wonderful

  439. invitation

  440. to walk

  441. through the

  442. gallery

  443. of God's

  444. glory.

  445. On display

  446. before us

  447. is God's

  448. glorious

  449. salvation

  450. to undeserving

  451. people like

  452. you and me.

  453. and we

  454. are just

  455. to sit

  456. not rush

  457. but pause

  458. and wonder

  459. that God

  460. who spoke

  461. the universe

  462. into existence

  463. would come

  464. down

  465. into the

  466. person of

  467. Jesus Christ

  468. and take

  469. all my sin

  470. and all your

  471. sin and die

  472. in our place

  473. and would

  474. declare me

  475. not

  476. guilty.

  477. just sit

  478. and bask

  479. in the

  480. knowledge

  481. that God

  482. forgives

  483. rebels

  484. like us

  485. and adopts

  486. us to be

  487. his children

  488. that we

  489. would have

  490. the same

  491. rights

  492. as the

  493. Lord Jesus

  494. that we

  495. have access

  496. to our

  497. Father God

  498. that we

  499. can cry

  500. out to

  501. him

  502. any time

  503. any place

  504. knowing he

  505. will never

  506. ever put

  507. his hand

  508. against us

  509. but will

  510. welcome us.

  511. delight

  512. in the

  513. joy

  514. that God

  515. would choose

  516. to show

  517. such mercy

  518. and that

  519. God

  520. loves

  521. to do

  522. so.

  523. Walk

  524. through the

  525. gallery

  526. of God's

  527. glory

  528. and see

  529. his salvation

  530. on display

  531. and wonder

  532. that God

  533. did it all

  534. for you.

  535. the glory

  536. of God

  537. is put

  538. on display.

  539. Second

  540. the glory

  541. of God

  542. is now

  543. to be

  544. declared.

  545. Imagine

  546. if you

  547. would

  548. for a

  549. moment

  550. again

  551. walking

  552. through

  553. a gallery

  554. and as

  555. you look

  556. at all

  557. the various

  558. scenes

  559. and portraits

  560. all around

  561. the wall

  562. and you

  563. notice

  564. people

  565. as they

  566. look at

  567. them

  568. they're

  569. praising

  570. the artist

  571. they're

  572. commenting

  573. to each

  574. other

  575. amazing

  576. incredible

  577. and so

  578. as you

  579. walk around

  580. you come

  581. to

  582. Da Vinci's

  583. Sunflowers

  584. and

  585. you get

  586. out a

  587. little

  588. scraper

  589. from your

  590. pocket

  591. and you

  592. start

  593. scraping

  594. off the

  595. corner

  596. and you

  597. scrape

  598. out Da Vinci

  599. and you

  600. just put

  601. your own

  602. little

  603. signature

  604. in the

  605. corner

  606. Johnny

  607. Grant

  608. or whoever

  609. it's

  610. ridiculous

  611. isn't it

  612. a ridiculous

  613. attempt to

  614. to try and

  615. take the

  616. glory from

  617. the true

  618. artist

  619. and try and

  620. receive praise

  621. for yourself

  622. well in the

  623. same way to

  624. claim salvation

  625. is something

  626. that I

  627. achieve and

  628. that I

  629. deserve

  630. is a

  631. ridiculous

  632. attempt to

  633. try and

  634. take the

  635. glory that

  636. belongs to

  637. God

  638. to ourselves

  639. just as an

  640. artist paints

  641. a picture

  642. so that we

  643. can enjoy

  644. all that

  645. they've done

  646. they paint

  647. it and

  648. put it

  649. there so

  650. that we

  651. can be

  652. amazed and

  653. enjoy the

  654. sheer brilliance

  655. of what they

  656. have done

  657. so God

  658. the ultimate

  659. artist has

  660. intervened and

  661. saved us

  662. so that we

  663. can simply

  664. enjoy

  665. all that

  666. he has

  667. done

  668. and in

  669. response

  670. as we

  671. gaze at

  672. his

  673. brilliance

  674. we are

  675. to declare

  676. his

  677. glory

  678. so first

  679. to God

  680. be

  681. the glory

  682. look at

  683. verse 36

  684. his

  685. conclusion

  686. to this

  687. great

  688. hymn

  689. of praise

  690. verse 36

  691. for from

  692. God

  693. and

  694. through

  695. God

  696. and

  697. to

  698. God

  699. are

  700. all

  701. things

  702. to

  703. God

  704. be

  705. the

  706. glory

  707. forever

  708. Amen

  709. salvation

  710. is

  711. from

  712. God

  713. he

  714. determined

  715. it

  716. salvation

  717. is

  718. through

  719. God

  720. he

  721. accomplished

  722. it

  723. and

  724. salvation

  725. is

  726. to

  727. God

  728. the

  729. purpose

  730. of

  731. salvation

  732. the

  733. goal

  734. of

  735. salvation

  736. the

  737. whole

  738. plan

  739. of

  740. salvation

  741. is

  742. all

  743. about

  744. God

  745. you see

  746. sometimes

  747. we think

  748. the purpose

  749. of salvation

  750. begins

  751. and ends

  752. with us

  753. that God

  754. looked down

  755. upon us

  756. and said

  757. I need

  758. to do

  759. this

  760. for you

  761. and it

  762. it's

  763. all about

  764. us

  765. well it

  766. is in a

  767. secondary

  768. sense

  769. but in a

  770. primary

  771. sense

  772. God

  773. saves us

  774. for the

  775. purpose

  776. of bringing

  777. glory

  778. first and

  779. foremost

  780. to him

  781. he acts

  782. in such

  783. a way

  784. so that

  785. we would

  786. respond

  787. in glory

  788. listen to

  789. this

  790. from

  791. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  792. chapter

  793. 1

  794. chapter

  795. 1

  796. verse

  797. 4

  798. just

  799. listen

  800. to

  801. these

  802. words

  803. for he

  804. that is

  805. God

  806. chose us

  807. in him

  808. before

  809. the creation

  810. of the

  811. world

  812. to be

  813. holy

  814. and blameless

  815. in his

  816. sight

  817. why did

  818. he do

  819. that

  820. to the

  821. praise

  822. of his

  823. glorious

  824. grace

  825. or here

  826. follow on

  827. the screen

  828. here's another

  829. verse

  830. from the

  831. same

  832. chapter

  833. and you

  834. also

  835. were

  836. included

  837. in

  838. Christ

  839. when

  840. you

  841. heard

  842. the

  843. word

  844. of

  845. truth

  846. the

  847. gospel

  848. of

  849. your

  850. salvation

  851. having

  852. believed

  853. you were

  854. marked

  855. in him

  856. with a

  857. seal

  858. the

  859. promised

  860. holy

  861. spirit

  862. who is

  863. a

  864. deposit

  865. guaranteeing

  866. our

  867. inheritance

  868. until

  869. the

  870. redemption

  871. of those

  872. who are

  873. God's

  874. possession

  875. why

  876. why

  877. did

  878. God

  879. save

  880. you

  881. why

  882. did

  883. he

  884. save

  885. me

  886. to

  887. the

  888. praise

  889. of

  890. his

  891. glory

  892. so

  893. that

  894. attention

  895. would

  896. be

  897. drawn

  898. to

  899. him

  900. God

  901. saves

  902. us

  903. that

  904. is

  905. the

  906. reason

  907. we

  908. are

  909. saved

  910. is

  911. to

  912. give

  913. him

  914. all

  915. the

  916. glory

  917. we

  918. have

  919. not

  920. been

  921. saved

  922. to

  923. escape

  924. hell

  925. and

  926. get

  927. to

  928. heaven

  929. although

  930. that

  931. is

  932. in

  933. some

  934. sense

  935. true

  936. we

  937. are

  938. not

  939. saved

  940. simply

  941. to

  942. make

  943. our

  944. life

  945. better

  946. although

  947. our

  948. life

  949. is

  950. exceedingly

  951. better

  952. because

  953. of what

  954. God

  955. has

  956. done

  957. we

  958. are

  959. saved

  960. primarily

  961. so

  962. that

  963. we

  964. might

  965. declare

  966. the

  967. glory

  968. of

  969. God

  970. that's

  971. the

  972. reason

  973. God

  974. delights

  975. in

  976. saving

  977. us

  978. that

  979. is

  980. why

  981. he

  982. pours

  983. out

  984. his

  985. mercy

  986. and

  987. his

  988. grace

  989. is

  990. so

  991. that

  992. his

  993. name

  994. becomes

  995. famous

  996. that

  997. the

  998. world

  999. would

  1000. see

  1001. what

  1002. a

  1003. mighty

  1004. and

  1005. great

  1006. God

  1007. we

  1008. have

  1009. to

  1010. God

  1011. be

  1012. the

  1013. glory

  1014. forever

  1015. Amen

  1016. now

  1017. the

  1018. question

  1019. is

  1020. how

  1021. do

  1022. we

  1023. go

  1024. about

  1025. giving

  1026. God

  1027. the

  1028. glory

  1029. well

  1030. all

  1031. life

  1032. is to

  1033. be

  1034. lived

  1035. for

  1036. the

  1037. glory

  1038. of

  1039. God

  1040. look

  1041. at

  1042. chapter

  1043. 12

  1044. verse

  1045. 1

  1046. you

  1047. see

  1048. if we

  1049. didn't

  1050. have

  1051. chapter

  1052. headings

  1053. or

  1054. big

  1055. numbers

  1056. like

  1057. 12

  1058. there

  1059. we

  1060. would

  1061. just

  1062. keep

  1063. reading

  1064. and

  1065. that's

  1066. in

  1067. a

  1068. sense

  1069. what

  1070. we're

  1071. meant

  1072. to

  1073. do

  1074. as

  1075. we

  1076. wonder

  1077. at

  1078. God's

  1079. salvation

  1080. what

  1081. do

  1082. I

  1083. do

  1084. in

  1085. response

  1086. chapter

  1087. 12

  1088. verse

  1089. 1

  1090. therefore

  1091. because

  1092. of

  1093. God's

  1094. glorious

  1095. salvation

  1096. I

  1097. urge

  1098. you

  1099. brothers

  1100. and

  1101. sisters

  1102. in

  1103. view

  1104. of

  1105. God's

  1106. mercy

  1107. as

  1108. you

  1109. walk

  1110. through

  1111. the

  1112. gallery

  1113. of

  1114. God's

  1115. glory

  1116. as

  1117. you

  1118. see

  1119. all

  1120. that

  1121. he

  1122. has

  1123. done

  1124. for

  1125. you

  1126. what

  1127. can

  1128. you

  1129. do

  1130. but

  1131. offer

  1132. your

  1133. bodies

  1134. as

  1135. living

  1136. sacrifices

  1137. holy

  1138. and

  1139. pleasing

  1140. to

  1141. God

  1142. this

  1143. is

  1144. your

  1145. spiritual

  1146. or

  1147. reasonable

  1148. act

  1149. of

  1150. worship

  1151. in

  1152. response

  1153. to

  1154. God's

  1155. salvation

  1156. our

  1157. whole

  1158. life

  1159. is

  1160. now

  1161. to

  1162. serve

  1163. God

  1164. we

  1165. no

  1166. longer

  1167. serve

  1168. God

  1169. to

  1170. try

  1171. and

  1172. gain

  1173. favour

  1174. or

  1175. get

  1176. his

  1177. attention

  1178. so

  1179. that

  1180. he'll

  1181. bless

  1182. us

  1183. more

  1184. or

  1185. give

  1186. us

  1187. more

  1188. we

  1189. serve

  1190. God

  1191. because

  1192. he has

  1193. saved

  1194. us

  1195. and

  1196. given

  1197. to

  1198. us

  1199. everything

  1200. and

  1201. all

  1202. that

  1203. we

  1204. need

  1205. because

  1206. he

  1207. has

  1208. blessed

  1209. us

  1210. with

  1211. every

  1212. spiritual

  1213. blessing

  1214. in

  1215. Christ

  1216. here's

  1217. how

  1218. our

  1219. dead

  1220. friend

  1221. Martin

  1222. Luther

  1223. put

  1224. it

  1225. we

  1226. are

  1227. both

  1228. joyful

  1229. and

  1230. happy

  1231. because

  1232. of

  1233. Christ

  1234. in

  1235. whom

  1236. so

  1237. many

  1238. benefits

  1239. are

  1240. conferred

  1241. upon

  1242. us

  1243. therefore

  1244. it

  1245. is

  1246. our

  1247. only

  1248. one

  1249. occupation

  1250. to

  1251. serve

  1252. God

  1253. joyfully

  1254. without

  1255. thought

  1256. of

  1257. gain

  1258. you

  1259. see

  1260. we

  1261. declare

  1262. the

  1263. glory

  1264. of

  1265. God

  1266. as

  1267. we

  1268. serve

  1269. him

  1270. and

  1271. the

  1272. way

  1273. in

  1274. which

  1275. we

  1276. serve

  1277. God

  1278. is

  1279. not

  1280. by

  1281. wandering

  1282. off

  1283. into

  1284. some

  1285. private

  1286. little

  1287. excluded

  1288. commune

  1289. and

  1290. singing

  1291. hymns

  1292. to

  1293. God

  1294. all

  1295. on

  1296. our

  1297. own

  1298. although

  1299. you're

  1300. quite

  1301. welcome

  1302. to

  1303. do

  1304. that

  1305. and

  1306. it's

  1307. good

  1308. to

  1309. praise

  1310. the

  1311. Lord

  1312. it's

  1313. by

  1314. serving

  1315. one

  1316. another

  1317. in the

  1318. context

  1319. of

  1320. everyday

  1321. to

  1322. day

  1323. life

  1324. listen

  1325. again

  1326. to

  1327. Martin

  1328. Luther

  1329. here's

  1330. what

  1331. he said

  1332. although

  1333. the

  1334. Christian

  1335. is

  1336. free

  1337. from

  1338. all

  1339. works

  1340. that

  1341. is

  1342. free

  1343. from

  1344. trying

  1345. to

  1346. earn

  1347. salvation

  1348. God

  1349. he

  1350. he

  1351. ought

  1352. he

  1353. he

  1354. to

  1355. empty

  1356. himself

  1357. take

  1358. upon

  1359. himself

  1360. the

  1361. form

  1362. of

  1363. a

  1364. servant

  1365. and

  1366. serve

  1367. help

  1368. and in

  1369. every

  1370. way

  1371. deal

  1372. with

  1373. his

  1374. neighbor

  1375. as

  1376. he

  1377. sees

  1378. God

  1379. through

  1380. Christ

  1381. has

  1382. dealt

  1383. with

  1384. him

  1385. and

  1386. still

  1387. deals

  1388. with

  1389. him

  1390. we

  1391. want to

  1392. serve

  1393. God

  1394. well

  1395. just

  1396. think

  1397. in the

  1398. ways in

1399. which God has served you and the way in which God deals with you, he does not treat us as our sins

1400. deserve. So in the same way, deal with one another and serve each other. So no longer are we striving

1401. to use our good works to make God love us, but now God has given us good works to serve others

1402. for the good of others, for the glory of God. What will it look like? Well, continue on. Chapter 12, verse 9.

1403. Here's what serving God or serving one another is going to look like in the context of every day-to-day

1404. life. Let me just read a few examples. Chapter 12, verse 9. Love. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil.

1405. Cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

1406. This is how we bring glory to God. Verse 13. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice

1407. hospitality. Invite people to your homes. Or invite them out. Spend time with them. That's how we bring

1408. glory to God. Or verse 17. Do not repay evil with evil, but be careful to do what is right in the eyes of

1409. everybody. Sorry, I should have read verse 14. Let's go back to verse 14 again. Bless those who persecute

1410. you. Bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Mourn with those who are mourning.

1411. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people

1412. of low position. Do not be conceited. Verse 21. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil

1413. with good. You see, living life to the glory of God is not confined to one hour on a Sunday morning.

1414. It's not about separating ourselves from the world and surrounding yourselves by a nice group of

1415. Christians and singing hymns and praying, although we should sing and we should pray. It is lived out in

1416. the context of every day-to-day life, 24-7, in the nitty-gritty hardship of life, whether you're at home with

1417. your kids and spending time with them, whether it's working alongside a grumpy colleague, whether it's

1418. serving an annoying neighbour and being friendly to them, or giving hospitality to those who are

1419. outsiders. In all of this, we are responding and we are serving God for his almighty salvation in our

1420. lives and we are saying glory to him as we serve one another. All of life is lived for the glory of God.

1421. Look at chapter 15, verse 7. In some ways, this brings it all to a conclusion. Chapter 15, verse 7.

1422. 1. Accept one another then, just as Christ accepted you. Why? Why serve one another? Why love one another?

1423. Why mourn with those who mourn? Why rejoice with those who rejoice? Why forgive each other?

1424. Here's the reason. In order to bring praise to God. To bring him glory. So let me encourage us all

1425. to walk regularly through the gallery of God's glory. Do not rush, but stop and gaze and wonder at the

1426. pictures and the scenes on display. His riches, his plan. Everything worked out for our good. And in response,

1427. serve one another in love. To God be the glory forever. Amen. Let's pray.

1428. Our Father God, would you please help us to sit, to reflect, to think upon the beauty, the power

1429. and the greatness of our almighty God. And may you work in us in such a way that we delight

1430. in all that you have done and enjoy all that you have done and live our lives in service to you.

1431. Father, may we bring glory to you. Father, may we bring glory to you. Father, may we bring glory to you.

1432. May all the praise go to Jesus so that your name is exalted and you become known throughout the world.

1433. Father, we pray for your help that we might do it well. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

1436. We are going to sing together two songs, which I hope help us in some way to respond to what we have been thinking about this morning.

1437. The first one, let your kingdom come, let your will be done, so that everyone might know you.
