  1. Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.

  2. I said to the Lord, You are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing.

  3. As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight.

  4. The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods.

  5. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips.

  6. Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup.

  7. You have made my lot secure.

  8. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.

  9. Surely I have delightful inheritance.

  10. I will praise the Lord who counsels me.

  11. Even at night my heart instructs me.

  12. I have set the Lord always before me.

  13. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

  14. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.

  15. My body also will rest secure.

  16. Because you will not abandon me to the grave.

  17. Nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

  18. You have made known to me the path of life.

  19. You will fill me with joy in your presence.

  20. With eternal pleasures at your right hand.

  21. Let's pray.

  22. Let's pray.

  23. You are my Lord.

  24. Apart from you, I have no good thing.

  25. Father, our prayer this morning is that we all here would be able to say

  26. that apart from you, without you, we have no good thing.

  27. So please bring us to that place where we are resting in you as our eternal refuge.

  28. Teach us this morning by your Holy Spirit.

  29. Speak to us in such a way that we turn away from all our other places of refuge.

  30. And turn alone to you.

  31. Help us.

  32. In Jesus' name we pray.

  33. Amen.

  34. Well, in 2014, Muhammad al-Hajj Ali escaped the terrors of Syria

  35. with his two sisters, brother and parents.

  36. Muhammad fled to the city of London.

  37. Being granted asylum, he settled down to begin a new life.

  38. Tragically, Muhammad was the first named victim of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster

  39. just the other week.

  40. His friend commented,

  41. He survived the war in Syria,

  42. only to die in a tower block in London.

  43. This is horrible after all he has been through,

  44. and a place of safety

  45. leads to death.

  46. Let those words sink in.

  47. This is horrible.

  48. After all he has been through,

  49. and a place of safety

  50. leads to death.

  51. It makes us wonder,

  52. is there anywhere we can find

  53. true refuge?

  54. You see, we all look for safety and security.

  55. In fact, our whole lives are focused on trying to build or create a bubble

  56. or this place of protection around us.

  57. We install security systems.

  58. We buy cars with the latest braking technology.

  59. We go on special diets and fitness regimes.

  60. We go to health and safety classes.

  61. We strive to build a place of protection

  62. around our fragile lives.

  63. But the experience of life keeps reminding us

  64. that not one of us is safe in this world.

  65. Accidents do happen.

  66. Sickness strikes.

  67. Wars rage on.

  68. Tower blocks do go on fire.

  69. And if we manage somehow to escape all of those things,

  70. we do eventually die.

  71. So is there anywhere we can find refuge?

  72. Well, Psalm 16 that we read together just now

  73. shows us how and where we can find refuge.

  74. Look at verse 1.

  75. And don't forget the little heading.

  76. A miktam.

  77. I don't know what that is,

  78. nor does anybody else apparently,

  79. when you read the commentaries.

  80. It could be a musical term.

  81. Who knows?

  82. It's a miktam.

  83. More importantly, it's David.

  84. King David.

  85. Who wrote it.

  86. And listen to what he said.

  87. Verse 1.

  88. Keep me safe, O God.

  89. For in you I take refuge.

  90. This Psalm is showing us that refuge is not found in a place.

  91. It's not a physical location.

  92. Not in a place,

  93. but in a person.

  94. In you, O God,

  95. I take refuge.

  96. The Psalms, if you were to go through them,

  97. speak often about God being a refuge.

  98. We started this this morning.

  99. Psalm 46.

  100. God is our refuge and strength

  101. an ever-present help in trouble.

  102. Or what about Psalm 61, verse 3.

    Psalms 61:3

  103. You have been my refuge.

  104. A strong tower

  105. against the foe.

  106. Or Psalm 91.

  107. I will say of the Lord,

  108. He is my refuge

  109. and my fortress,

  110. my God in whom I trust.

  111. Refuge,

  112. shelter,

  113. protection

  114. is not found in a place,

  115. not found in a building like this,

  116. but in a person.

  117. God is our tower.

  118. So let's see how we can know

  119. and experience God as a refuge.

  120. We're going to look at two big ideas

  121. from this Psalm.

  122. First,

  123. God is our refuge

  124. in life.

  125. Verses 2 to 8.

  126. If God is our refuge,

  127. what does that actually look like?

  128. What is it that constructs

  129. the shelter

  130. in which we can say

  131. God is our refuge

  132. that we run to?

  133. Well, three things.

  134. God is all sufficient

  135. in life.

  136. Look at verse 2.

  137. I said to the Lord,

  138. You are my Lord.

  139. You are my boss.

  140. You are my master.

  141. Apart from you,

  142. I have no good thing.

  143. Or without you,

  144. I have no good thing.

  145. Nothing else satisfies

  146. and provides

  147. like God.

  148. You see,

  149. we can own a house

  150. and a car.

  151. We can have a job.

  152. We can have good health.

  153. We can have friends.

  154. We can have family.

  155. We can have all of these things.

  156. And all of these things

  157. are good things

  158. that God has given to us

  159. for our enjoyment.

  160. And in some sense,

  161. they provide us

  162. and give to us refuge.

  163. These are the things

  164. we look to,

  165. the people we turn to

  166. when we need safety

  167. and security.

  168. But all of these things,

  169. none of them,

  170. are guaranteed to last.

  171. They are all

  172. false

  173. refuge.

  174. In fact,

  175. they can all disappear

  176. in the passing of a day.

  177. A letter of redundancy

  178. from our boss,

  179. unexpected news

  180. from our doctor,

  181. a freak accident.

  182. Everything can be taken

  183. just like that.

  184. You see,

  185. look at verse 4.

  186. The sorrows

  187. of those

  188. will increase

  189. who run after

  190. other gods.

  191. Now,

  192. we might worship

  193. pagan gods

  194. or have little temples

  195. built up

  196. in our back garden,

  197. but we've all got

  198. our little gods,

  199. haven't we?

  200. Gods that we look to

  201. for our refuge.

  202. It might be

  203. the security of a job.

  204. I've got my job.

  205. I've got a good income.

  206. I'm safe.

  207. Or I'm married.

  208. I've got a wonderful

  209. wife or husband.

  210. They're good to me.

  211. Or I've got great health.

  212. Never been to the doctor.

  213. Never had a night

  214. in hospital.

  215. But none of those things

  216. are guaranteed.

  217. They are all

  218. a false

  219. refuge.

  220. Verse 4.

  221. For the sorrows

  222. of those

  223. will increase

  224. who run after

  225. other gods.

  226. So if we look

  227. for our refuge

  228. in other things

  229. or look for our rest

  230. from other people,

  231. well,

  232. ultimately,

  233. he's saying,

  234. you will experience

  235. sorrow.

  236. They'll not

  237. satisfy.

  238. They will not be

  239. the shelter

  240. that we need.

  241. You see,

  242. if we are to

  243. no true refuge,

  244. we are to run away

  245. from our false

  246. refuge

  247. and run to,

  248. literally repent,

  249. turn away from

  250. and turn to

  251. the all-sufficient

  252. God.

  253. Verse 2.

  254. Who is

  255. my Lord?

  256. Apart from you

  257. I have no

  258. good

  259. thing.

  260. Now,

  261. part of God's

  262. sufficiency,

  263. part of God's

  264. provision and

  265. care

  266. is experienced

  267. through his

  268. people.

  269. So look at

  270. verse 3.

  271. Remember,

  272. David is writing,

  273. he says,

  274. as for the saints

  275. who are in the

  276. land,

  277. they are the

  278. glorious ones

  279. in whom

  280. is all my

  281. delight.

  282. David was a

  283. king and he

  284. enjoyed all the

  285. privileges and

  286. the status of

  287. being a great

  288. king,

  289. access to so

  290. much.

  291. But look who

  292. he looks to.

  293. It's the saints,

  294. God's people,

  295. he delights in.

  296. The people

  297. are his

  298. support and

  299. strength.

  300. He says it's

  301. good to be

  302. with them.

  303. And that's

  304. what God

  305. has done

  306. for us.

  307. He has

  308. provided a

  309. shelter for

  310. his people,

  311. the church,

  312. not just a

  313. physical building.

  314. When we talk

  315. of church,

  316. we're thinking

  317. of God's

  318. people,

  319. people who

  320. trust in

  321. him.

  322. And through

  323. his church,

  324. through his

  325. people,

  326. God provides

  327. rest for the

  328. broken.

  329. him.

  330. That doesn't

  331. mean to say

  332. church takes

  333. the place

  334. of God.

  335. No, the

  336. community of

  337. God's people

  338. is the

  339. means by

  340. which God

  341. brings refuge.

  342. So if you've

  343. come here this

  344. morning and

  345. you're seeking

  346. that refuge and

  347. you're looking

  348. for that rest,

  349. well it could

  350. be coming from

  351. the person you're

  352. sitting beside,

  353. through the

  354. words that they

  355. speak to you.

  356. Now I know

  357. we let each

  358. other down,

  359. we're not

  360. perfect people.

  361. And I know

  362. that I have

  363. let down

  364. many of you.

  365. But amidst

  366. all our

  367. flaws and

  368. failures of

  369. saying the

  370. wrong thing

  371. and doing

  372. the wrong

  373. thing,

  374. God in

  375. his goodness

  376. works through

  377. people like

  378. you and me

  379. to speak

  380. words of

  381. encouragement

  382. as we

  383. point each

  384. other towards

  385. God who

  386. is our

  387. refuge.

  388. God works

  389. through his

  390. people to

  391. bring refuge

  392. and care

  393. and comfort

  394. to one

  395. another.

  396. So can

  397. you say

  398. in verse

  399. two,

  400. you are

  401. my Lord,

  402. apart from

  403. you I

  404. have no

  405. good thing.

  406. Can you

  407. say that?

  408. That God

  409. is sufficient,

  410. that God

  411. is enough

  412. and he is

  413. my refuge?

  414. refuge.

  415. Well,

  416. another way

  417. in which

  418. God

  419. provides refuge,

  420. not only is

  421. he sufficient

  422. in providing

  423. and giving

  424. to us,

  425. he is

  426. sovereign

  427. over our

  428. life.

  429. To be

  430. sovereign means

  431. that he's

  432. in charge,

  433. he rules

  434. over everything.

  435. David,

  436. of course,

  437. the writer

  438. of this

  439. psalm,

  440. was a

  441. king.

  442. He ruled

  443. over a

  444. people,

  445. over a

  446. nation.

  447. But he

  448. looks beyond

  449. himself to

  450. the ultimate

  451. king,

  452. the ultimate

  453. sovereign.

  454. Look at

  455. verse five.

  456. He says

  457. of God,

  458. Lord,

  459. you have

  460. assigned

  461. me my

  462. portion

  463. and my

  464. cup.

  465. Whatever

  466. I have,

  467. everything

  468. that we

  469. have,

  470. our health

  471. and strength,

  472. right down

  473. to our

  474. places of

  475. work,

  476. everything

  477. comes

  478. from

  479. God.

  480. He

  481. supplies,

  482. he

  483. sustains,

  484. in fact,

  485. our whole

  486. life,

  487. is in

  488. the hands

  489. of God.

  490. Look at

  491. verse six.

  492. The

  493. boundary

  494. lines have

  495. fallen for

  496. me in

  497. pleasant

  498. places.

  499. Surely

  500. I have a

  501. delightful

  502. inheritance.

  503. Let's

  504. think about

  505. that,

  506. the boundary

  507. lines falling

  508. in pleasant

  509. places.

  510. We've

  511. got to

  512. think back

  513. in here a

  514. little bit

  515. in our

  516. history to

  517. when God

  518. had rescued

  519. his people

  520. out of

  521. Egypt and

  522. brought them

  523. into the

  524. promised

  525. land.

  526. Remember

  527. when God

  528. did that

  529. great act

  530. and he

  531. gave

  532. orders,

  533. he gave

  534. instructions

  535. about where

  536. each group,

  537. each tribe

  538. should live.

  539. Boundary

  540. markers were

  541. laid out and

  542. said,

  543. this family

  544. is to live

  545. here,

  546. this is your

  547. boundary,

  548. this family

  549. is to live

  550. here,

  551. this is your

  552. boundary.

  553. And so as

  554. David looks

  555. back over the

  556. course of his

  557. life,

  558. he can see

  559. that God

  560. has ordered

  561. and directed

  562. his life,

  563. he is where

  564. he is because

  565. God has

  566. them there.

  567. And this

  568. God is

  569. sovereign over

  570. your life.

  571. He sets

  572. boundaries,

  573. boundary lines

  574. for your

  575. life.

  576. Have you ever

  577. thought about

  578. where you're

  579. living right

  580. now?

  581. You live here

  582. in Carragalline,

  583. okay, but the

  584. house where you

  585. live, the

  586. place where you

  587. work, the

  588. person you're

  589. married to if

  590. you're married,

  591. all of these

  592. things have

  593. all been set

  594. part of God's

  595. boundary lines.

  596. Nothing takes

  597. God by surprise.

  598. Nothing happens

  599. in our life

  600. without God's

  601. permission.

  602. Our life is

  603. not a random

  604. set of chances

  605. in which I've

  606. just kind of

  607. got to figure

  608. my way out

  609. and do my

  610. best.

  611. God is

  612. over my

  613. life.

  614. And knowing

  615. that the

  616. God who

  617. created the

  618. universe in

  619. which we

  620. live has

  621. set a

  622. boundary

  623. around our

  624. life means

  625. that in

  626. God I

  627. have a

  628. refuge.

  629. And that's

  630. what David

  631. is looking

  632. to here.

  633. He says

  634. the boundary

  635. lines have

  636. fallen for

  637. me.

  638. I can

  639. trust this

  640. God.

  641. He has

  642. my life

  643. in his

  644. hands.

  645. He directs

  646. and orders

  647. your life.

  648. He alone

  649. permits and

  650. allows what

  651. is in

  652. your life.

  653. God.

  654. So we

  655. rest in

  656. the knowledge

  657. that God

  658. is over

  659. everything.

  660. He is

  661. sovereign.

  662. But he's

  663. not just

  664. sufficient.

  665. He's not

  666. just a

  667. sovereign over

  668. our life.

  669. He is a

  670. God who

  671. stands with

  672. us through

  673. life.

  674. Look down

  675. at verse

  676. eight.

  677. He says

  678. I have

  679. set the

  680. Lord always

  681. before me.

  682. So his

  683. focus, his

  684. attention is

  685. on God.

  686. Because he

  687. is at my

  688. right hand,

  689. I will not

  690. be shaken.

  691. Now to

  692. have someone

  693. at your

  694. right hand

  695. is to have

  696. someone who

  697. stands with

  698. you.

  699. It's like

  700. an armed

  701. soldier in

  702. battle.

  703. he stands

  704. alongside you,

  705. covering you,

  706. covering your

  707. back, protecting

  708. you, looking

  709. out for you.

  710. Or to

  711. have someone

  712. at your

  713. right hand

  714. in court

  715. is to have

  716. someone who

  717. speaks up

  718. for you,

  719. pleading your

  720. cause.

  721. Or others

  722. talk of it in

  723. this way as

  724. if you were

  725. going on a

  726. journey, to

  727. have someone

  728. at your

  729. right hand

  730. as you go

  731. on your

  732. journey is

  733. someone who

  734. will be a

  735. companion to

  736. you, a

  737. loyal friend

  738. who walks

  739. with you,

  740. doesn't give

  741. up, supports

  742. you.

  743. They're on

  744. your side, they

  745. stand with

  746. you, not

  747. against you.

  748. And David

  749. is looking to

  750. God and

  751. saying, you're

  752. my right

  753. hand.

  754. You stand

  755. alongside me.

  756. Well, in

  757. what sense

  758. does God

  759. stand alongside

  760. us?

  761. How does

  762. he kind of

  763. speak up for

  764. us and how

  765. does he

  766. support us?

  767. God

  768. do you

  769. know?

  770. Well, I

  771. think the

  772. clue for

  773. us comes

  774. in verse

  775. seven, the

  776. preceding

  777. verse.

  778. Look what

  779. it says in

  780. verse seven.

  781. He says, I

  782. will praise

  783. the Lord

  784. who counsels

  785. me, even

  786. at night my

  787. heart instructs

  788. me.

  789. So, you

  790. see, it's

  791. through the

  792. counsel and

  793. the instruction

  794. of God that

  795. he stands

  796. with us.

  797. Do you

  798. remember

  799. Psalm 1 we

  800. looked at the

  801. other week?

  802. Have a look

  803. back there,

  804. just flick

  805. back to the

  806. beginning of

  807. the Psalms,

  808. Psalm 1.

  809. Remember

  810. these opening

  811. words?

  812. Blessed, so

  813. blessed we were

  814. thinking there

  815. about a

  816. blessed person

  817. is a happy,

  818. contented person.

  819. So the

  820. contented or

  821. happy person

  822. does not walk

  823. in the counsel

  824. of the wicked.

  825. So they're not

  826. listening to

  827. what the wicked

  828. have to say.

  829. They don't

  830. stand in the

  831. way of sinners

  832. or they don't

  833. sit in the

  834. seat of mockers.

  835. They're not

  836. looking to them

  837. for advice

  838. or for

  839. instruction.

  840. Instead,

  841. verse two,

  842. his delight

  843. is in the

  844. law or the

  845. word of the

  846. Lord.

  847. And on his

  848. law or on

  849. his word he

  850. meditates

  851. day and

  852. night.

  853. So you

  854. see, it's

  855. through the

  856. word that

  857. God draws

  858. alongside us

  859. and counsels

  860. us and

  861. instructs us.

  862. God's word

  863. is like a

  864. refuge.

  865. So the

  866. Bible that

  867. we're using

  868. here this

  869. morning, that

  870. we're speaking

  871. from, this

  872. in a sense is

  873. our refuge.

  874. It's how God

  875. speaks to us.

  876. It's how he

  877. counsels us,

  878. how he

  879. instructs us.

  880. He's at our

  881. right hand as we

  882. listen to him.

  883. He is speaking

  884. those words to

  885. us, giving

  886. us that sense

  887. of refuge,

  888. speaking comfort,

  889. speaking assurance,

  890. speaking help.

  891. So first,

  892. in life,

  893. God is our

  894. refuge.

  895. He's all

  896. sufficient.

  897. He's sovereign

  898. over your life

  899. and he stands

  900. with us as we

  901. walk through

  902. life.

  903. But he's not

  904. just our

  905. refuge in

  906. life.

  907. Here's the

  908. second big

  909. idea.

  910. He is our

  911. refuge in

  912. death.

  913. You see,

  914. even when

  915. death

  916. threatens us,

  917. God is our

  918. refuge.

  919. There's three

  920. promises here

  921. we're going to

  922. look at.

  923. Here's the

  924. first one.

  925. The promise

  926. of physical

  927. protection.

  928. Look at

  929. verse 9.

  930. It starts,

  931. therefore,

  932. my heart is

  933. glad.

  934. Therefore,

  935. why is he

  936. saying therefore?

  937. Because God

  938. is a refuge

  939. in life.

  940. He's sufficient.

  941. He's sovereign.

  942. He stands

  943. with us.

  944. Therefore,

  945. my heart is

  946. glad and my

  947. tongue rejoices.

  948. My body,

  949. that is my

  950. physical body,

  951. as we are

  952. sitting right

  953. now,

  954. my body

  955. will rest

  956. secure.

  957. How can we

  958. be so sure

  959. that we'll just

  960. rest secure?

  961. Look at

  962. verse 10.

  963. Because,

  964. he says,

  965. you will not

  966. abandon me

  967. to the grave.

  968. You'll not

  969. abandon me

  970. to the grave,

  971. nor will you

  972. let your

  973. holy one

  974. see decay.

  975. What an

  976. incredible promise.

  977. God is saying

  978. to David,

  979. you're not

  980. going to die.

  981. you're not

  982. going to

  983. decay.

  984. Whoever

  985. or whatever

  986. is threatening

  987. David's life,

  988. we're not

  989. told,

  990. but something

  991. is threatening

  992. his life,

  993. he has

  994. absolute

  995. confidence

  996. and total

  997. assurance

  998. that God

  999. is going

  1000. to preserve

  1001. his life.

  1002. Sickness

  1003. isn't going

  1004. to kill

  1005. him.

  1006. People

  1007. aren't going

  1008. to kill

  1009. him.

  1010. David

  1011. is somehow

  1012. going to

  1013. escape

  1014. death.

  1015. you will

  1016. not let,

  1017. or look

  1018. at verse

  1019. 10,

  1020. you will

  1021. not abandon

  1022. me to the

  1023. grave.

  1024. He's going

  1025. to be

  1026. protected.

  1027. God is

  1028. his refuge,

  1029. keeping him

  1030. safe and

  1031. secure.

  1032. Now,

  1033. isn't that

  1034. the kind

  1035. of refuge

  1036. you and

  1037. I want

  1038. as we go

  1039. about our

  1040. day-to-day

  1041. lives?

  1042. One who

  1043. will keep

  1044. us and

  1045. preserve us

  1046. even when

  1047. life is

  1048. threatened.

  1049. Do you

  1050. think that's

  1051. possible?

  1052. Well,

  1053. hold that

  1054. thought in

  1055. your mind

  1056. and we'll

  1057. come back

  1058. to it.

  1059. Because

  1060. that's not

  1061. all that

  1062. is promised.

  1063. There is

  1064. the promise

  1065. of

  1066. lasting

  1067. pleasures.

  1068. Verse 11,

  1069. at the

  1070. very end

  1071. of the

  1072. psalm,

  1073. he says,

  1074. you've

  1075. made known

  1076. to me

  1077. the path

  1078. of life,

  1079. you will

  1080. fill me

  1081. with joy

  1082. in your

  1083. presence,

  1084. with

  1085. eternal

  1086. pleasures

  1087. at your

  1088. right hand.

  1089. hand.

  1090. David has

  1091. this total

  1092. confidence

  1093. that God

  1094. will be

  1095. his

  1096. eternal

  1097. refuge,

  1098. not just

  1099. a shelter

  1100. through

  1101. life,

  1102. not just

  1103. preservation

  1104. when life

  1105. is being

  1106. threatened,

  1107. but a

  1108. refuge

  1109. forever.

  1110. Do you

  1111. see what

  1112. it said

  1113. at the

  1114. end of

  1115. verse 11?

  1116. With

  1117. eternal

  1118. pleasures

  1119. at your

  1120. right hand.

  1121. God

  1122. was at

  1123. his right

  1124. hand

  1125. through

  1126. life,

  1127. life,

  1128. and God

  1129. is going

  1130. to be

  1131. his right

  1132. hand

  1133. for all

  1134. eternity.

  1135. You see,

  1136. at the

  1137. very beginning,

  1138. David cried

  1139. out in

  1140. verse 1,

  1141. keep me

  1142. safe,

  1143. O God,

  1144. for in

  1145. you I

  1146. take refuge.

  1147. And now

  1148. with absolute

  1149. assurance at

  1150. the very

  1151. end,

  1152. he can

  1153. say to

  1154. God that

  1155. not even

  1156. death

  1157. itself

  1158. has the

  1159. power

  1160. to destroy

  1161. or break

  1162. down the

  1163. shelter

  1164. that God

  1165. has over

  1166. David.

  1167. David's

  1168. life is

  1169. eternally

  1170. safe and

  1171. secure.

  1172. He will

  1173. have

  1174. eternal

  1175. pleasures.

  1176. Now

  1177. just think

  1178. about that.

  1179. Is that

  1180. actually

  1181. true?

  1182. Is that

  1183. possible?

  1184. How could

  1185. David be

  1186. so sure

  1187. his life

  1188. was safe?

  1189. Because in

  1190. some sense

  1191. his life

  1192. in the

  1193. world is

  1194. no different

  1195. to you

  1196. where he

  1197. faced

  1198. dangers

  1199. and

  1200. struggles

  1201. and

  1202. people

  1203. got

  1204. sick

  1205. and

  1206. how

  1207. could

  1208. he

  1209. be

  1210. so

  1211. sure

  1212. his

  1213. life

  1214. was

  1215. safe?

  1216. Well,

  1217. there's a

  1218. third

  1219. promise.

  1220. The

  1221. promise

  1222. of the

  1223. prophet.

  1224. Remember,

  1225. David

  1226. was God's

  1227. king.

  1228. And God

  1229. also had

  1230. prophets.

  1231. Prophets

  1232. were people

  1233. who spoke

  1234. on behalf

  1235. of God

  1236. to the

  1237. people.

  1238. And

  1239. Nathan

  1240. was one

  1241. prophet

  1242. who spoke

  1243. to

  1244. King

  1245. David.

  1246. And we're

  1247. going to

  1248. have a

  1249. look at

  1250. what this

  1251. prophet

  1252. spoke to

  1253. King

  1254. David.

  1255. So go

  1256. back to

  1257. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  1258. chapter 7

  1259. which I

  1260. think is on

  1261. page 311.

  1262. If you're

  1263. using a

  1264. church

  1265. Bible,

  1266. that's the

  1267. red-covered

  1268. one.

  1269. It's on

  1270. page

  1271. 311.

  1272. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  1273. chapter 7

  1274. we'll pick

  1275. it up

  1276. verse 12.

  1277. So

  1278. MBC

  1279. students

  1280. should all

  1281. be familiar.

  1282. Get your

  1283. hermeneutical

  1284. hats on

  1285. and do

  1286. your

  1287. interpretation

  1288. here.

  1289. So

  1290. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7:12

  1291. chapter 7

  1292. verse 12.

  1293. So

  1294. Nathan

  1295. the prophet

  1296. is speaking

  1297. to

  1298. David,

  1299. King

  1300. David.

  1301. and here's

  1302. what the

  1303. prophet

  1304. says.

  1305. Verse 12.

  1306. Nathan's

  1307. speaking to

  1308. David.

  1309. When your

  1310. days are

  1311. over and

  1312. you rest

  1313. with your

  1314. fathers.

  1315. Now,

  1316. hang on a

  1317. minute.

  1318. David's just

  1319. been saying

  1320. in the

  1321. psalm,

  1322. I'm not

  1323. going to

  1324. see the

  1325. grave,

  1326. I'm going

  1327. to be

  1328. protected

  1329. in death.

  1330. And now

  1331. somebody's

  1332. coming along

  1333. saying,

  1334. well no

  1335. actually David,

  1336. when your

  1337. days are

  1338. over and

  1339. you rest

  1340. with your

  1341. fathers,

  1342. you are

  1343. going to

  1344. die,

  1345. you are

  1346. going to

  1347. go to

  1348. the

  1349. grave.

  1350. So

  1351. what's

  1352. going on?

  1353. Well let's

  1354. read verse

  1355. 12 again.

  1356. When your

  1357. days are

  1358. over and

  1359. you rest

  1360. with your

  1361. fathers,

  1362. I will

  1363. raise up

  1364. your

  1365. offspring to

  1366. succeed you,

  1367. who will

  1368. come from

  1369. your own

  1370. body,

  1371. and I

  1372. will establish

  1373. his

  1374. kingdom.

  1375. He is

  1376. the one

  1377. who will

  1378. build a

  1379. house for

  1380. my name,

  1381. and I

  1382. will establish

  1383. the throne

  1384. of his

  1385. kingdom

  1386. forever.

  1387. So,

  1388. you see,

  1389. David knew

  1390. he was

  1391. going to

  1392. physically

  1393. die.

  1394. The

  1395. prophet had

  1396. told him,

  1397. you know,

  1398. you are

  1399. going to

  1400. die,

  1401. David.

  1402. He would

  1403. be placed

  1404. in the

  1405. grave,

  1406. he would

  1407. decompose

  1408. and decay

  1409. like everybody

  1410. else,

  1411. his body

  1412. would rot

  1413. and be

  1414. eaten like

  1415. worms or

  1416. whatever else,

  1417. he would

  1418. die.

  1419. But David

  1420. also knew

  1421. that God

  1422. promised

  1423. through the

  1424. prophet Nathan

  1425. that there

  1426. was an

  1427. eternal

  1428. king to

  1429. come.

  1430. One of

  1431. David's

  1432. descendants

  1433. whose

  1434. kingdom

  1435. and throne

  1436. would

  1437. never

  1438. ever

  1439. end.

  1440. Look at

  1441. verse 16

  1442. of 2

  1443. Samuel 7.

  1444. Your house

  1445. and your

  1446. kingdom

  1447. shall endure

  1448. forever

  1449. before me.

  1450. Your throne

  1451. shall be

  1452. established

  1453. forever.

  1454. Now go

  1455. back to

  1456. Psalm 16.

  1457. An

  1458. eternal

  1459. king,

  1460. one of

  1461. David's

  1462. descendants

  1463. would come

  1464. who would

  1465. defeat

  1466. death or

  1467. somehow

  1468. destroy

  1469. death and

  1470. therefore he

  1471. would reign

  1472. forever,

  1473. he would

  1474. live

  1475. forever.

  1476. And

  1477. because of

  1478. this promise,

  1479. because of

  1480. this death

  1481. defeating

  1482. king that

  1483. was coming,

  1484. David could

  1485. say in

  1486. Psalm 16

    Psalms 16:10

  1487. verse 10,

  1488. you will

  1489. not abandon

  1490. me to

  1491. the grave,

  1492. nor will

  1493. you let

  1494. your

  1495. holy one

  1496. see decay.

  1497. So he's

  1498. no longer

  1499. talking about

  1500. himself,

  1501. he's talking

  1502. about your

  1503. holy one,

  1504. one to

  1505. come.

  1506. So David

  1507. knew that

  1508. his life,

  1509. his future

  1510. destiny was

  1511. wrapped up in

  1512. God's holy

  1513. one to

  1514. come,

  1515. a promised

  1516. king who

  1517. was going

  1518. to come,

  1519. an eternal

  1520. king.

  1521. And because

  1522. this king

  1523. would reign

  1524. and live

  1525. forever,

  1526. it meant

  1527. that David

  1528. would also

  1529. live forever.

  1530. David's

  1531. refuge is in

  1532. God who

  1533. promised,

  1534. a death

  1535. defeating,

  1536. death

  1537. destroying

  1538. king.

  1539. Well you

  1540. say,

  1541. well that's

  1542. great for

  1543. David that

  1544. he had this

  1545. king who

  1546. was going

  1547. to come

  1548. and live

  1549. forever

  1550. and somehow

  1551. be able to

  1552. deal with

  1553. David's

  1554. death,

  1555. but what

  1556. about you

  1557. and me?

  1558. Because you

  1559. and I are

  1560. going to

  1561. die,

  1562. what's

  1563. going to

  1564. happen

  1565. to us?

  1566. Well,

  1567. have a

  1568. look at

  1569. Acts 2,

  1570. which is

  1571. on page

  1572. 1094.

  1573. Acts 2.

  1574. Acts 2.

  1575. 24.

  1576. You see,

  1577. the Bible

  1578. is not

  1579. just a

  1580. random

  1581. set of

  1582. books or

  1583. stories just

  1584. kind of

  1585. collected and

  1586. shoved in

  1587. together between

  1588. two covers.

  1589. It's one

  1590. big story

  1591. and every

  1592. story connects

  1593. to the

  1594. greatest story,

  1595. the story of

  1596. Jesus.

  1597. So look at

  1598. what Acts 2

  1599. has to tell

  1600. us.

  1601. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:24

  1602. verse 24.

  1603. And the

  1604. person here

  1605. speaking is

  1606. Peter,

  1607. one of

  1608. Jesus'

  1609. disciples.

  1610. And he's

  1611. preaching.

  1612. He's telling

  1613. the people

  1614. about the

  1615. resurrection of

  1616. Jesus Christ

  1617. from the

  1618. dead,

  1619. that Jesus

  1620. died and

  1621. he rose

  1622. again.

  1623. And look

  1624. what it

  1625. says in

  1626. verse 24.

  1627. He says,

  1628. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:24

  1629. verse 24,

  1630. God raised

  1631. Jesus from

  1632. the dead,

  1633. freeing him

  1634. from the

  1635. agony of

  1636. death because

  1637. it was

  1638. impossible for

  1639. death to

  1640. keep its

  1641. hold on

  1642. him.

  1643. So Jesus

  1644. died but

  1645. death couldn't

  1646. hold its

  1647. grip on

  1648. Jesus.

  1649. God brought

  1650. Jesus back

  1651. to life

  1652. again.

  1653. That's what

  1654. Peter is

  1655. talking about.

  1656. Then Peter

  1657. starts quoting

  1658. Psalm 16.

  1659. Look at

  1660. verse 25.

  1661. David said

  1662. about him.

  1663. Jesus, I

  1664. saw the Lord

  1665. always before

  1666. me.

  1667. Because he

  1668. is at my

  1669. right hand,

  1670. I will not

  1671. be shaken.

  1672. Therefore

  1673. my heart is

  1674. glad and

  1675. my tongue

  1676. rejoices.

  1677. My body

  1678. will also

  1679. live in

  1680. hope because

  1681. you will

  1682. not abandon

  1683. me to the

  1684. grave nor

  1685. will you let

  1686. your Holy

  1687. One see

  1688. decay.

  1689. You have

  1690. made known

  1691. to me the

  1692. path of

  1693. life.

  1694. You will

  1695. fill me

  1696. with joy

  1697. in your

  1698. presence.

  1699. And now

  1700. Peter starts

  1701. commenting or

  1702. explaining this

  1703. Psalm.

  1704. Look at

  1705. verse 29.

  1706. He says

  1707. brothers,

  1708. brothers and

  1709. sisters,

  1710. I can tell

  1711. you confidently

  1712. that the

  1713. patriarch David,

  1714. King David,

  1715. died and

  1716. was buried in

  1717. his tomb.

  1718. It's here to

  1719. this day.

  1720. So go check

  1721. it out.

  1722. Go down the

  1723. road.

  1724. You can dig

  1725. it up.

  1726. You'll find

  1727. his bones.

  1728. David died.

  1729. He's dead.

  1730. But,

  1731. verse 30,

  1732. David was

  1733. a prophet.

  1734. So as he

  1735. wrote,

  1736. he was

  1737. speaking

  1738. prophetically

  1739. and knew

  1740. that God

  1741. had promised

  1742. him on

  1743. oath that

  1744. he would

  1745. place one

  1746. of his

  1747. descendants on

  1748. his throne.

  1749. Seeing what

  1750. was ahead,

  1751. looking into

  1752. the distance,

  1753. not quite

  1754. knowing everything

  1755. what it would

  1756. be like,

  1757. but looking

  1758. ahead,

  1759. David spoke

  1760. of the

  1761. resurrection

  1762. of Jesus

  1763. Christ,

  1764. that he

  1765. was not

  1766. abandoned to

  1767. the grave,

  1768. nor did

  1769. his body

  1770. see

  1771. decay.

  1772. God has

  1773. raised this

  1774. Jesus to

  1775. life,

  1776. and we

  1777. are all

  1778. witnesses

  1779. of that

  1780. fact.

  1781. You see,

  1782. Jesus Christ

  1783. is the

  1784. promise,

  1785. death-defeating,

  1786. death-destroying,

  1787. eternal

  1788. king.

  1789. Jesus did

  1790. die,

  1791. but he

  1792. was not

  1793. abandoned

  1794. to the

  1795. grave.

  1796. He did

  1797. not see

  1798. decay.

  1799. Three days

  1800. later,

  1801. we read

  1802. that he

  1803. rose from

  1804. the dead,

  1805. becoming an

  1806. eternal refuge

  1807. for all

  1808. who would

  1809. trust in

  1810. him.

  1811. You see,

  1812. the world

  1813. we live

  1814. in is

  1815. not a

  1816. safe place.

  1817. Our

  1818. places of

  1819. protection,

  1820. the little

  1821. bubbles that

  1822. we create

  1823. around us,

  1824. cannot

  1825. withstand the

  1826. onslaught

  1827. of death.

  1828. One day,

  1829. death is

  1830. going to

  1831. confront us,

  1832. and whatever

  1833. little protection

  1834. we have

  1835. around us,

  1836. it ain't

  1837. going to

  1838. work.

  1839. Sooner or

  1840. later,

  1841. every single

  1842. one of us

  1843. in this

  1844. room will

  1845. die.

  1846. But,

  1847. if like

  1848. David,

  1849. our faith

  1850. is in

  1851. Christ,

  1852. because as

  1853. he wrote,

  1854. he was

  1855. looking forward

  1856. to God's

  1857. promise,

  1858. that there

  1859. would come

  1860. a king

  1861. who would

  1862. defeat death

  1863. and destroy

  1864. death.

  1865. So if

  1866. our faith

  1867. is like

  1868. David in

  1869. Christ,

  1870. then as

  1871. we look

  1872. back to

  1873. Christ and

  1874. to his

  1875. resurrection,

  1876. then Jesus

  1877. becomes our

  1878. refuge in

  1879. death.

  1880. You see,

  1881. our whole

  1882. life is

  1883. wrapped up

  1884. in the

  1885. eternal

  1886. destiny of

  1887. Jesus.

  1888. If Jesus

  1889. rose from

  1890. the grave,

  1891. we too

  1892. will rise

  1893. from the

  1894. grave.

  1895. Yes,

  1896. we will

  1897. physically

  1898. die,

  1899. but he

  1900. will come

  1901. back and

  1902. he will

  1903. restore us

  1904. to life

  1905. in his

  1906. eternal

  1907. kingdom.

  1908. So in

  1909. that sense,

  1910. death is

  1911. not the

  1912. end.

  1913. And we

  1914. can say

  1915. with David,

  1916. with absolute

  1917. confidence and

  1918. total assurance,

  1919. Psalm 16

    Psalms 16:10

  1920. verses 10

  1921. and 11,

  1922. you will

  1923. not abandon

  1924. me to the

  1925. grave.

  1926. You will

  1927. not let

  1928. your Holy

  1929. One see

  1930. decay,

  1931. for you

  1932. have made

  1933. known to

  1934. me the

  1935. paths of

  1936. life.

  1937. You will

  1938. fill me

  1939. with joy

  1940. in your

  1941. presence,

  1942. with

  1943. eternal

  1944. pleasures

  1945. at your

  1946. right hand.

  1947. what a

  1948. promise,

  1949. refuge,

  1950. shelter,

  1951. protection

  1952. for all

  1953. eternity.

  1954. No more

  1955. evil,

  1956. no more

  1957. suffering,

  1958. no more

  1959. burning down

  1960. towers,

  1961. no more

  1962. wars,

  1963. no more

  1964. death.

  1965. And that

  1966. is all

  1967. found not

  1968. in a

  1969. place,

  1970. but in

  1971. a person,

  1972. the person

  1973. of Jesus

  1974. Christ who

  1975. conquered

  1976. death and

  1977. lives

  1978. forever

  1979. more.

  1980. So my

  1981. question to

  1982. us all,

  1983. to myself

  1984. included,

  1985. is where

  1986. is your

  1987. refuge?

  1988. Where do

  1989. you run

  1990. to or who

  1991. do you look

  1992. to to keep

  1993. you safe?

  1994. there is

  1995. only one,

  1996. and that is

  1997. Christ our

  1998. refuge,

  1999. the eternal

  2000. death-defeating,

  2001. death-destroying

  2002. king.

  2003. Can you

  2004. say,

  2005. Psalm

    Psalms 16:1

  2006. 16,

  2007. verses 1

  2008. and 2

  2009. for yourself

  2010. personally,

  2011. can you

  2012. say this?

  2013. May this

  2014. be our

  2015. prayer as

  2016. we close.

  2017. keep me

  2018. safe,

  2019. O God,

  2020. for in

  2021. you I

  2022. take refuge.

  2023. I said

  2024. to the

  2025. Lord,

  2026. you are

  2027. my Lord,

  2028. apart from

  2029. you I

  2030. have no

  2031. good

  2032. thing.

  2033. Can you

  2034. say that

  2035. for yourself?

  2036. Can you

  2037. confront death

  2038. with the

  2039. confidence and

  2040. say,

  2041. my refuge

  2042. is in

  2043. him,

  2044. apart from

  2045. him I

  2046. have no

  2047. good

  2048. thing.

  2049. run to

  2050. him.

  2051. Find your

  2052. refuge and

  2053. your rest

  2054. in our

  2055. eternal

  2056. king.

  2057. Let's pray

  2058. together.

  2059. Amen.

  2060. Amen.

  2061. Amen.

  2062. Amen.

  2063. Amen.

  2064. Amen.

  2065. Amen.

  2066. Amen.

  2067. Amen.

  2068. Amen.

  2069. Amen.

  2070. Amen.
