  1. because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.

  2. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians

  3. and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land,

  4. a land flowing with milk and honey,

  5. the home of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and Jebusites.

  6. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me,

  7. and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.

  8. So now go.

  9. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.

  10. But Moses said to God,

  11. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?

  12. And God said,

  13. I will be with you,

  14. and this will be a sign to you that it is I who have sent you.

  15. When you have brought the people out of Egypt,

  16. you will worship God on this mountain.

  17. Moses said to God,

  18. Suppose I go to the Israelites and they say to them,

  19. The God of your fathers has sent me to you,

  20. and they ask me,

  21. What is his name?

  22. Then what shall I tell them?

  23. God said to Moses,

  24. I am who I am.

  25. This is what you are to say to the Israelites.

  26. I am has sent me to you.

  27. God also said to Moses,

  28. Say to the Israelites,

  29. The Lord,

  30. the God of your fathers,

  31. the God of Abraham,

  32. and the God of Isaac,

  33. and the God of Jacob

  34. has sent me to you.

  35. This is my name forever.

  36. The name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.

  37. Go,

  38. assemble the elders of Israel,

  39. and say to them,

  40. The Lord,

  41. the God of your fathers,

  42. the God of Abraham,

  43. and Isaac,

  44. and Jacob

  45. appeared to me and said,

  46. I have watched over you,

  47. and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.

  48. And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt,

  49. into the land of the Canaanites,

  50. the Hivites,

  51. the Amorites,

  52. the Perizzites,

  53. the Hivites,

  54. and Jebusites,

  55. a land flowing with milk and honey.

  56. The elders of Israel will listen to you.

  57. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him,

  58. The Lord,

  59. the God of the Hebrews,

  60. has sent,

  61. has met with us.

  62. Let us take a three-day journey into the desert

  63. to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.

  64. But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go

  65. unless a mighty hand compels him.

  66. So I will stretch out my hand

  67. and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them.

  68. After that,

  69. he will let you go.

  70. And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed towards his people,

  71. so that when you leave,

  72. you will not go empty-handed.

  73. Every woman is to ask her neighbor

  74. and any woman living in her house

  75. for articles of silver and gold and for clothing,

  76. which you will put on your sons and daughters,

  77. and so you will plunder the Egyptians.

  78. Jonathan.

  79. Jonathan.

  80. Thank you.

  81. Let's just bow ahead and pray just as we come to God's word.

  82. Father,

  83. we do thank you for your word,

  84. for that living and active word.

  85. I pray indeed as we hear the words from Scripture

  86. that indeed our hearts will be changed,

  87. that our desire will be to know you more,

  88. to live out our lives in service to you.

  89. Help us, Lord,

  90. to concentrate,

  91. to focus on you,

  92. and to be enthralled once again

  93. at how mighty,

  94. and what a great God you are.

  95. Amen.

  96. I'd like to ask you a question.

  97. Do you like rescue stories?

  98. You do?

  99. You might remember a number of years ago,

  100. there was these miners in Chile

  101. got caught in a mine deep underground.

  102. Do you remember that?

  103. There was 33 men

  104. were stuck over 2,000 feet down,

  105. and for a few days,

  106. nobody even knew they were alive.

  107. Once they knew they were alive,

  108. people made huge efforts to save them.

  109. In fact,

  110. for nearly 70 days,

  111. they made efforts.

  112. They were sending down food and water,

  113. coming up with ways to save them.

  114. By the 69th day,

  115. when the first miners were coming up from the ground,

  116. one billion people, it was estimated,

  117. were watching it live.

  118. So if you can imagine that,

  119. all these people all around the world,

  120. with all that was going on in their lives,

  121. were tuning in to see 33 people

  122. in a small part of Chile

  123. being raised to the ground.

  124. Why were people so interested in that?

  125. Why was it the focus of so many conversations,

  126. the focus of so many news reports?

  127. Is it because we like to see people rescued?

  128. We don't want people to suffer.

  129. After all,

  130. these were real men

  131. who were down underground

  132. in a desperate situation,

  133. couldn't save themselves.

  134. Maybe that's why we were so interested in them.

  135. Our movies.

  136. We do like rescue movies as well,

  137. don't we?

  138. Movies like Spartacus

  139. or Braveheart.

  140. And often in these movies,

  141. there's a hero.

  142. And we like heroes,

  143. don't we?

  144. We want to know what the hero is like.

  145. If we think of Braveheart,

  146. you think of William Wallace.

  147. He was raised up

  148. to try to save,

  149. to rescue his people,

  150. the Scottish people,

  151. from being under the British.

  152. And he said to them,

  153. Scotland needs to be free.

  154. And people were excited about that.

  155. But William Wallace,

  156. who was he?

  157. After all,

  158. is he going to be able to help them?

  159. Because if it's going to be a rescue,

  160. and there's going to be a hero

  161. to do the rescue,

  162. we actually want to know

  163. what they're like,

  164. don't we?

  165. Because a hero needs to be able

  166. to complete what he's doing.

  167. There's no point in giving

  168. false hope to somebody

  169. if he's not going to be able

  170. to do it.

  171. In our reading this morning,

  172. it's from Exodus chapter 3,

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  173. and we're going to see

  174. a great rescue.

  175. Now,

  176. if we're familiar with Exodus,

  177. different things will come

  178. to our minds.

  179. For example,

  180. we might think of

  181. the Ten Commandments,

  182. or we might think of

  183. the plagues in Egypt,

  184. or we might think of

  185. Moses in a basket,

  186. going back to perhaps

  187. if you've heard the stories

  188. or seen pictures

  189. in Sunday school

  190. or something of the

  191. Moses in a basket,

  192. and being saved.

  193. Well,

  194. if you have your Bibles open,

  195. turn back to chapter 1 of Exodus.

  196. Our passage is right

  197. at the start of Exodus,

  198. and we see the context

  199. for our passage.

  200. chapter 1,

  201. it speaks of the sons of Israel

  202. who went from their land of Canaan

  203. down into Egypt.

  204. And when they arrived,

  205. they started to have children

  206. and more children and children

  207. until the generations passed.

  208. And for a long time,

  209. everything went well.

  210. Look at verse 7 of chapter 1.

  211. But the Israelites were fruitful

  212. and multiplied greatly

  213. and became exceedingly numerous.

  214. They were prospering.

  215. But in their prospering,

  216. they came to notice

  217. of the king.

  218. Look at verse 9.

  219. Look, the king said,

  220. the Israelites have become

  221. too numerous for us.

  222. Come,

  223. we must deal with them shrewdly

  224. or they will become

  225. even more numerous.

  226. And here was the main worry he had.

  227. And if war breaks out,

  228. they will join our enemies,

  229. fight against us,

  230. and leave the country.

  231. So he came up with a solution.

  232. I'll make them slaves.

  233. And that's exactly what he did.

  234. Look down in verse 11.

  235. He put slave masters over them.

  236. Verse 12.

  237. He oppressed them

  238. and he treated them ruthlessly.

  239. In verse 14,

  240. it tells us that their lives were bitter

  241. and they had hard labor.

  242. They weren't very happy about this,

  243. were they?

  244. How could this actually happen?

  245. Because back in Genesis,

  246. we're told when Israel

  247. and all his sons

  248. came down into Egypt,

  249. the king actually welcomed them.

  250. This was good.

  251. This was a good thing to happen.

  252. Yet, all these years later,

  253. they were being treated as slaves.

  254. And if that wasn't bad enough,

  255. look at verse 22.

  256. Because the slavery wasn't working

  257. and the Israelites were still

  258. growing in number,

  259. Pharaoh had another idea.

  260. And this time he said,

  261. let's kill every boy

  262. that is born

  263. and throw them into the Nile.

  264. This was going to be a solution

  265. to the growing number

  266. of the Israelites.

  267. Now, if this happened nowadays,

  268. there'd be an international outcry.

  269. We'd hear about it on the UN.

  270. It'd be all over social media.

  271. There might even be military intervention

  272. from a neighboring country.

  273. But for the Israelites,

  274. they were stuck.

  275. They were in their slavery.

  276. There was nothing they could do

  277. except groan out and cry.

  278. Look at verse 23 of chapter 2.

  279. It says,

  280. the Israelites groaned in their slavery

  281. and cried out

  282. because they were powerless.

  283. There was absolutely no one

  284. was going to help them.

  285. All they could do was cry and groan.

  286. Now, just pause for a moment.

  287. You've got these people in Egypt.

  288. They were slaves.

  289. They were no power, no freedom.

  290. They were fearing for their children.

  291. They basically had no life.

  292. They were in a desperate situation.

  293. We see something like that

  294. even in modern days

  295. when we see the migrants

  296. trying to flee North Africa,

  297. trying to get to Europe.

  298. They were desperate.

  299. They couldn't do anything themselves.

  300. They were hopping on boats to go across.

  301. In one interview,

  302. one man was interviewed

  303. and he said,

  304. I didn't know

  305. whether I was going to live or die.

  306. And I wondered

  307. how the Israelites felt.

  308. After all,

  309. they didn't know

  310. whether they were going to live or die.

  311. I mean,

  312. did no one care

  313. about their circumstances?

  314. Now,

  315. bear in mind,

  316. these are the children of Israel.

  317. I wonder,

  318. did it come to their mind,

  319. where was God in all this?

  320. Here they were,

  321. slaves,

  322. powerless,

  323. they couldn't do anything.

  324. Is it right to ask,

  325. where is God?

  326. Why isn't God doing anything about this?

  327. After all,

  328. was a promise not made

  329. to their forefather Abraham?

  330. Do you remember back in Genesis,

  331. in Genesis chapter 12 and 17,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  332. God made promises to Abraham.

  333. He said,

  334. I will bless you.

  335. You will be the father of many nations.

  336. I will be your God

  337. and you will be my people.

  338. And not only that,

  339. but I'm going to give you this great land,

  340. a land flowing with milk and honey.

  341. But what were they looking around at now?

  342. They were looking at half-built cities

  343. that they were supposed to be building

  344. or fields that they're supposed to work in

  345. that never seem to be finished.

  346. How could that happen?

  347. Had God forgotten them?

  348. Had God broken his promise?

  349. Maybe God wasn't able

  350. to fulfill his promise.

  351. After all,

  352. he said,

  353. I'll bring you into this land,

  354. but they weren't there.

  355. Or maybe God had chosen someone else.

  356. Maybe he'd chosen another people group

  357. in the world

  358. and said,

  359. I'll forget about these guys.

  360. I wonder if that goes through

  361. the minds of the Israelites.

  362. And so often for us,

  363. when we're going through

  364. different circumstances,

  365. we too might think these things.

  366. Where is God?

  367. We might say it out loud,

  368. but do we often find ourselves

  369. in a situation

  370. where we're thinking,

  371. life isn't great at the moment.

  372. It had so much promise.

  373. I had ideas.

  374. I was going to do this,

  375. this,

  376. this,

  377. this,

  378. and it's working out badly.

  379. And to actually ask ourselves,

  380. where is God in all this?

  381. Did God forget about us?

  382. I cry out.

  383. I don't need to hear anything.

  384. Is God concerned?

  385. Well,

  386. the Israelites were about to find out.

  387. Look in our passage in verse 7,

  388. what God had to say

  389. about their crying out.

  390. Verse 7 of chapter 3,

  391. the Lord said,

  392. I have indeed seen the misery

  393. of my people in Egypt.

  394. I have heard them crying out

  395. because of their slave drivers.

  396. And I am concerned

  397. about their suffering.

  398. Think about the words

  399. that were used.

  400. The Lord says,

  401. I have seen them.

  402. So he's able to see

  403. what was going on in Egypt.

  404. But not only did he see it,

  405. but he also heard it.

  406. He knew exactly what was going on.

  407. He could see the misery they were in,

  408. the hopeless situation.

  409. But at the end of the verse,

  410. it also says,

  411. I am concerned.

  412. In some verses it says,

  413. I knew God had full knowledge

  414. of what was going on in Egypt.

  415. But not only that,

  416. he was willing to do something about it.

  417. Look at verse 8.

  418. So I have come down to rescue them

  419. from the hand of the Egyptians.

  420. Isn't that going to be wonderful news

  421. for the Israelites?

  422. They're now hearing that God

  423. not only hears their cries for help,

  424. not only does he see it,

  425. but he's actually going to come down

  426. and help them.

  427. He was willing to associate with them,

  428. to identify himself with them

  429. by coming down.

  430. Isn't that an amazing thought

  431. that the God of all creation

  432. was willing to come down

  433. and rescue his people?

  434. We sing a popular song,

  435. My God is Mighty to Save,

  436. and the Israelites were about to find out

  437. the truth of that song.

  438. Now, God could have saved

  439. the Israelites by himself.

  440. Couldn't he?

  441. He literally could have just

  442. opened up the gates of Israel,

  443. let all the people pass through,

  444. and go up to the land.

  445. But he didn't.

  446. He had a certain plan

  447. of action.

  448. Look at verse 1,

  449. when we're introduced to Moses.

  450. Now, Moses was going about

  451. his normal, everyday business

  452. as a shepherd.

  453. And he sees a burning bush,

  454. and this is probably a story

  455. that's very familiar to us.

  456. And being curious,

  457. as any of us was,

  458. he went over to it.

  459. And God calls out to him.

  460. He says in verse 4,

  461. Moses, Moses.

  462. And Moses replies,

  463. Here I am.

  464. And then God identifies himself.

  465. He says in verse 6,

  466. I am the God of your father,

  467. the God of Abraham,

  468. the God of Isaac,

  469. and the God of Jacob.

  470. At this, Moses hid his face

  471. because he was afraid

  472. to look at God.

  473. God was identifying himself

  474. to Moses.

  475. He was saying,

  476. I am the God of your father.

  477. He was linking Moses

  478. with his family back in Egypt.

  479. But not only that,

  480. he was also the God of Abraham,

  481. Isaac, and Jacob,

  482. linking back to the entire people

  483. of Israel.

  484. And God had something

  485. very important to say to Moses.

  486. Look down in verse 10.

  487. So now go.

  488. I am sending you to Pharaoh

  489. to bring my people,

  490. the Israelites,

  491. out of Egypt.

  492. Moses was about to become

  493. the mediator

  494. between God and man.

  495. Now to say Moses

  496. didn't jump at the idea

  497. of being a mediator

  498. would be an understatement.

  499. Look at verse 11.

  500. But God said,

  501. but Moses said to God,

  502. who am I

  503. that I should go to Pharaoh

  504. and bring the Israelites out?

  505. Moses was immediately

  506. looking at himself

  507. and saying,

  508. I'm not going to be able

  509. to do this.

  510. Now,

  511. God doesn't say,

  512. oh actually Moses,

  513. you're the perfect man

  514. to do this.

  515. You're qualified.

  516. You're going to be able.

  517. Look at what God says to him

  518. in verse 12.

  519. He says,

  520. I will be with you.

  521. Because that's what

  522. Moses needed

  523. to go

  524. and rescue the people.

  525. The fact that God

  526. was with him.

  527. Now,

  528. this actually wasn't

  529. good enough for Moses.

  530. And he had

  531. another question.

  532. Look down

  533. in verse 13.

  534. Moses said to God,

  535. suppose I go

  536. to the Israelites

  537. and say to them,

  538. the God of your fathers

  539. has sent me to you

  540. and they ask me,

  541. what is his name?

  542. And then what

  543. shall I tell them?

  544. For whatever reason,

  545. Moses wanted to know

  546. what God's name was

  547. so that he could

  548. have authority

  549. in going to the Israelites.

  550. And the next two verses

  551. reveal something

  552. about God

  553. that was never

  554. revealed before.

  555. And we learn something

  556. about the nature

  557. and character of God.

  558. Reading from verse 14.

  559. God said to Moses,

  560. I am who I am.

  561. This is what you are

  562. to say to the Israelites.

  563. I am has sent me to you.

  564. Verse 15.

  565. God also said to Moses,

  566. say to the Israelites,

  567. the Lord,

  568. the God of your fathers,

  569. the God of Abraham,

  570. the God of Isaac

  571. and the God of Jacob

  572. has sent me to you.

  573. This is my name forever,

  574. the name by which

  575. I am to be remembered

  576. from generation

  577. to generation.

  578. God was giving

  579. a name to Moses

  580. that hadn't been given before.

  581. We know that

  582. because later on

  583. in chapter 6,

  584. God says,

  585. this is something

  586. I've never told them before.

  587. And what is God's name?

  588. Well,

  589. it's a little confusing

  590. when we read it first.

  591. Look at verse 14 again.

  592. He says,

  593. I am who I am.

  594. I mean,

  595. what does that mean?

  596. At the end of verse 14,

  597. he says,

  598. I am has sent you.

  599. And then in verse 15,

  600. look at the word

  601. in caps,

  602. in capitals,

  603. the Lord,

  604. which he's calling himself

  605. the God of your fathers.

  606. What is God

  607. actually saying here?

  608. Is he using the word

  609. I am

  610. and the word Lord

  611. interchangeably?

  612. In other words,

  613. he's saying,

  614. I am the same as Lord.

  615. Well,

  616. first looking at the word Lord.

  617. If you ever see

  618. in your Bible

  619. the word Lord

  620. in capitals,

  621. L-O-R-D,

  622. the Hebrew word

  623. has only four letters in it.

  624. You might be familiar with it.

  625. Y-H-W-H

  626. and we pronounce that word

  627. Yahweh.

  628. So,

  629. God was giving

  630. a name to Moses

  631. that he hadn't given before.

  632. Lord,

  633. or Yahweh.

  634. It was his personal name

  635. or if you'd like,

  636. his covenant name.

  637. But he's also calling himself

  638. I am.

  639. Well,

  640. what's the connection?

  641. Well,

  642. the root word for both

  643. is the verb

  644. to be.

  645. So,

  646. what God was saying was

  647. I am.

  648. I simply exist.

  649. Now,

  650. pause for a moment

  651. to think,

  652. what does that mean?

  653. If God says,

  654. I am,

  655. I just am.

  656. It's a very strange thing to say,

  657. but think about

  658. what it actually means.

  659. If something

  660. is just is,

  661. it's just there.

  662. There's no beginning

  663. and there's no end.

  664. So,

  665. what we could say

  666. is that God

  667. is revealing something

  668. about himself

  669. that we can understand

  670. to be

  671. to be

  672. an exciting

  673. illustration

  674. of what God is like.

  675. We might say

  676. God exists.

  677. That might seem obvious.

  678. We know God exists.

  679. What he's saying is

  680. I never didn't exist.

  681. So often we can live our lives

  682. as if God doesn't exist.

  683. Well,

  684. how are the Israelites

  685. going to hear that?

  686. Here they are

  687. in their slavery.

  688. Nobody seems to be

  689. listening to them

  690. and all of a sudden

  691. Moses is going to come

  692. and say to them,

  693. I am.

  694. In other words,

  695. I exist.

  696. Isn't that going to be

  697. exciting for them after all?

  698. Here they are.

  699. They had no hope

  700. in their lives

  701. and God

  702. was going to tell them,

  703. well,

  704. actually,

  705. I exist.

  706. So,

  707. if there was a time,

  708. no time

  709. that God didn't exist,

  710. then

  711. God is more

  712. powerful

  713. than anything

  714. or anywhere else

  715. because

  716. if God

  717. always existed,

  718. then nobody

  719. created him.

  720. There was no power

  721. or authority

  722. that was bigger than him.

  723. In fact,

  724. God wasn't influenced

  725. or reliant

  726. on anyone.

  727. He was

  728. totally

  729. sovereign.

  730. So when the Israelites

  731. are hearing

  732. that God

  733. is coming

  734. to save them,

  735. they can be assured

  736. of this,

  737. that there was

  738. no one

  739. greater than him.

  740. There was no one

  741. God was reliant on.

  742. there was no one

  743. that was going

  744. to tell God

  745. what to do.

  746. In fact,

  747. if God

  748. always existed

  749. and he just

  750. is,

  751. he also

  752. doesn't

  753. change.

  754. So when

  755. God

  756. was going

  757. to tell the Israelites

  758. that I am

  759. has sent you,

  760. what he was saying

  761. was also,

  762. I'm not going

  763. to change.

  764. I am a God

  765. of love.

  766. I will always

  767. be a God

  768. of love.

  769. I am a faithful

  770. God.

  771. I will always

  772. be a faithful

  773. God.

  774. When I made

  775. you a promise,

  776. when I made

  777. a promise

  778. to Abraham,

  779. I'm going

  780. to keep

  781. that promise.

  782. So,

  783. what's

  784. in a name?

  785. Well,

  786. tied up in

  787. God's name,

  788. the Lord,

  789. is that

  790. he's an

  791. active God.

  792. He's an

  793. ever-present

  794. God.

  795. He's not

  796. going to

  797. change.

  798. We're not

  799. going to be

  800. surprised.

  801. He's not

  802. going to do

  803. anything out

  804. of character.

  805. And no

  806. matter what

  807. place or

  808. what time

  809. or what

  810. circumstances,

  811. any of

  812. us are

  813. in,

  814. God is

  815. always

  816. going to

  817. be there.

  818. So,

  819. we ask

  820. ourselves,

  821. is God

  822. going to

  823. be able

  824. to save

  825. the rest

  826. of the

  827. people of

  828. Israel?

  829. After all,

  830. we always

  831. want to

  832. know,

  833. if someone's

  834. going to

  835. save us,

  836. are they

  837. going to

  838. be able?

  839. Well,

  840. God was

  841. just about

  842. to tell

  843. the Israelites,

  844. there was

  845. no one

  846. else able.

  847. I am

  848. able.

  849. I am

  850. mighty

  851. to save.

  852. So,

  853. if he's

  854. established

  855. that God

  856. is going

  857. to be

  858. able to

  859. save the

  860. Israelites,

  861. how did

  862. the rescue

  863. work itself

  864. out?

  865. Look over

  866. at verse

  867. 16.

  868. God was

  869. going to

  870. reveal his

  871. rescue plan

  872. to Moses,

  873. and in a

  874. sense,

  875. it was

  876. actually quite

  877. simple.

  878. He'd already

  879. told Moses

  880. to go,

  881. and in

  882. verse 16,

  883. he now

  884. tells him

  885. to go

  886. again.

  887. But this

  888. time,

  889. he was

  890. going to

  891. go to

  892. the elders

  893. of the

  894. Israelites,

  895. those who

  896. were leading

  897. Israel,

  898. and he

  899. was going

  900. to tell

  901. them the

  902. good news

  903. that God

  904. himself was

  905. going to

  906. do the

  907. rescue.

  908. Verse 16,

  909. go assemble

  910. the elders

  911. of Israel

  912. and say

  913. to them,

  914. the Lord,

  915. the God

  916. of your

  917. fathers,

  918. appeared to

  919. me and

  920. said,

  921. I have

  922. watched

  923. over you

  924. and have

  925. seen what

  926. has been

  927. done in

  928. Egypt.

  929. No doubt

  930. they're going

  931. to be very

  932. excited at

  933. that,

  934. and even

  935. more excited

  936. from verse

  937. 17,

  938. and I have

  939. promised to

  940. bring you up

  941. out of the

  942. land of your

  943. misery into

  944. the land of

  945. the Canaanites

  946. and all

  947. these other

  948. people groups,

  949. a land

  950. flowing with

  951. milk and

  952. honey.

  953. So Moses

  954. was going to

  955. go to the

  956. elders,

  957. tell them the

  958. good news

  959. is coming,

  960. and then,

  961. in verse 18,

  962. they were all

  963. going to go to

  964. Pharaoh and

  965. say,

  966. we're going to

  967. take a journey

  968. out into the

  969. desert.

  970. But God in

  971. his providence

  972. tells Moses

  973. something.

  974. He tells in

  975. verse 19

  976. that Pharaoh

  977. isn't going to

  978. like the idea

  979. in fact,

  980. he's going

  981. to say no.

  982. Now,

  983. that's actually

  984. not very

  985. helpful,

  986. really,

  987. if you're

  988. about to

  989. be told

  990. God's going

  991. to rescue

  992. and then

  993. say,

  994. well,

  995. actually,

  996. Pharaoh's

  997. not going

  998. to go

  999. along with

  1000. the plan.

  1001. But God

  1002. was going

  1003. to do

  1004. something

  1005. amazing

  1006. in Egypt.

  1007. In

  1008. verse 20,

  1009. we see

  1010. that God

  1011. was going

  1012. to bring

  1013. judgment

  1014. on Egypt.

  1015. You see,

  1016. the Egyptians

  1017. hadn't treated

  1018. God's people

  1019. well,

  1020. and there was

  1021. going to have

  1022. to be a

  1023. price to pay

  1024. for that.

  1025. And God

  1026. was going

  1027. to bring

  1028. judgment,

  1029. and they

  1030. were going

  1031. to pay

  1032. for what

  1033. they've

  1034. done.

  1035. Look down

  1036. in the end

  1037. of verse 20.

  1038. After that,

  1039. he will

  1040. let you

  1041. go.

  1042. And surely

  1043. that's what

  1044. the Israelites

  1045. wanted to hear,

  1046. that they

  1047. can now

  1048. go.

  1049. But when

  1050. you're being

  1051. rescued,

  1052. you don't

  1053. want to be

  1054. just rescued

  1055. out of

  1056. your own

  1057. situation,

  1058. you want

  1059. to be

  1060. rescued

  1061. to

  1062. something.

  1063. Look at

  1064. verse 17

  1065. again.

  1066. The Israelites

  1067. are going

  1068. to hear

  1069. this great

  1070. news that

  1071. not only

  1072. are they

  1073. going to

  1074. be taken

  1075. out of

  1076. the misery

  1077. of Egypt,

  1078. but into

  1079. a land

  1080. that is

  1081. flowing

  1082. with milk

  1083. and honey.

  1084. And this

  1085. rescue of

  1086. the Israelites

  1087. is something

  1088. that was

  1089. going to be

  1090. remembered

  1091. for generations

  1092. to generation.

  1093. If you

  1094. think of

  1095. even the

  1096. passage that

  1097. Ralph was

  1098. reading earlier

  1099. in Exodus

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  1100. chapter 15,

  1101. there were

  1102. songs written

  1103. about these

  1104. rescues.

  1105. We see

  1106. it in

  1107. the Psalms,

  1108. in Psalms

  1109. 77,

  1110. 78.

  1111. We know

  1112. it in

  1113. the Passover.

  1114. It's

  1115. remembered

  1116. that God

  1117. had rescued

  1118. his people.

  1119. But we

  1120. also see

  1121. it in

  1122. the New

  1123. Testament.

  1124. If you

  1125. ever read

  1126. Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1127. chapter 7

  1128. about the

  1129. stoning

  1130. of Stephen,

  1131. Stephen

  1132. refers to

  1133. this rescue

  1134. from Egypt

  1135. by God.

  1136. We also

  1137. see it in

  1138. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1139. chapter 11,

  1140. that great

  1141. chapter of

  1142. faith.

  1143. the writer

  1144. speaks of

  1145. being saved

  1146. out of

  1147. that

  1148. exodus.

  1149. But this

  1150. rescue,

  1151. it's been

  1152. remembered for

  1153. generations to

  1154. generations.

  1155. But do we

  1156. see something

  1157. greater than

  1158. that?

  1159. You know,

  1160. if we're

  1161. watching a

  1162. movie and

  1163. we really

  1164. like it and

  1165. they bring

  1166. out a

  1167. sequel,

  1168. we often

  1169. want to go

  1170. and see the

  1171. sequel,

  1172. but it's

  1173. never as

  1174. good as

  1175. the original.

  1176. But in

  1177. this rescue

  1178. that we're

  1179. reading about

  1180. here, we

  1181. see that

  1182. there's

  1183. actually an

  1184. even greater

  1185. rescue.

  1186. Think of

  1187. the similarities

  1188. that we have

  1189. read in

  1190. our passage

  1191. just now.

  1192. You see,

  1193. a lot of

  1194. what we

  1195. read in

  1196. the Old

  1197. Testament

  1198. finds its

  1199. fulfillment in

  1200. the New.

  1201. There's so

  1202. many people

  1203. and events

  1204. that we read

  1205. about and

  1206. it's like a

  1207. shadow.

  1208. We see

  1209. something greater

  1210. in the New

  1211. Testament and

  1212. this rescue

  1213. is one of

  1214. those great

  1215. events.

  1216. Think of

  1217. the position

  1218. of the

  1219. Israelites.

  1220. They were

  1221. in slavery

  1222. and there

  1223. was nothing

  1224. they could

  1225. do about

  1226. it.

  1227. Now,

  1228. we don't

  1229. have slave

  1230. bastards over

  1231. us.

  1232. We're not

  1233. forced to

  1234. do things

  1235. we don't

  1236. want to

  1237. do.

  1238. Not all

  1239. the time

  1240. anyway.

  1241. But are

  1242. we still

  1243. not in

  1244. slavery?

  1245. Think of

  1246. the words

  1247. of Jesus.

  1248. In chapter

  1249. 8, verse

  1250. 34, he

  1251. said, everyone

  1252. who sins

  1253. is a

  1254. slave to

  1255. sin.

  1256. That's

  1257. everyone.

  1258. Now, you

  1259. might say

  1260. to yourself,

  1261. well, that

  1262. doesn't include

  1263. me because

  1264. I don't

  1265. sin.

  1266. But Paul

  1267. wrote in

  1268. Romans

    Romans 3:23

  1269. chapter 3,

  1270. verse 23,

  1271. all have

  1272. sinned and

  1273. fall short

  1274. of the

  1275. glory of

  1276. God.

  1277. So, in

  1278. effect, all

  1279. of us were

  1280. once slaves

  1281. to sin.

  1282. Just like

  1283. the Israelites,

  1284. we were

  1285. slaves.

  1286. and like

  1287. the Israelites,

  1288. there is

  1289. nothing we

  1290. can do

  1291. in it.

  1292. We're

  1293. powerless

  1294. in ourselves

  1295. to save

  1296. ourselves.

  1297. Think also

  1298. of the

  1299. mediator.

  1300. God

  1301. chose

  1302. Moses to

  1303. be a

  1304. mediator.

  1305. Somebody to

  1306. come between

  1307. God and

  1308. the people.

  1309. But is

  1310. there not

  1311. a greater

  1312. mediator that

  1313. came?

  1314. In 1

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  1315. Timothy

  1316. chapter 2,

  1317. Jesus is

  1318. referred to

  1319. as a

  1320. mediator.

  1321. it says

  1322. there is

  1323. one

  1324. mediator

  1325. between

  1326. God and

  1327. man,

  1328. the man

  1329. Christ

  1330. Jesus.

  1331. Moses,

  1332. he was

  1333. faithful as

  1334. a servant

  1335. in bringing

  1336. the people

  1337. out of

  1338. Israel.

  1339. But Jesus,

  1340. it speaks

  1341. in Hebrews,

  1342. he was

  1343. faithful as

  1344. a son

  1345. because Jesus

  1346. is greater

  1347. than

  1348. Moses and

  1349. we needed

  1350. a mediator

  1351. because there

  1352. was nothing

  1353. we could

  1354. do.

  1355. you might

  1356. recall we

  1357. spoke about

  1358. God coming

  1359. down to

  1360. rescue the

  1361. Israelites.

  1362. What an

  1363. amazing thought

  1364. that is.

  1365. In the

  1366. powerlessness

  1367. of the

  1368. Israelites,

  1369. God came

  1370. down.

  1371. Aren't there

  1372. wonderful verses

  1373. in the New

  1374. Testament that

  1375. speak of

  1376. Jesus coming

  1377. down to

  1378. rescue us

  1379. from our

  1380. sins?

  1381. Think of

  1382. Romans chapter

    Romans 5:6

  1383. 5,

  1384. verse 6.

  1385. It says,

  1386. you see,

  1387. at just

  1388. the right

  1389. time,

  1390. when we

  1391. were still

  1392. powerless,

  1393. Christ died

  1394. for the

  1395. ungodly.

  1396. That's all

  1397. of us.

  1398. There was

  1399. nothing we

  1400. could do.

  1401. God came

  1402. down to

  1403. rescue the

  1404. Israelites.

  1405. And we

  1406. see it in

  1407. the New

  1408. Testament,

  1409. Jesus coming

  1410. down to

  1411. rescue us.

  1412. Turn back,

  1413. if you will,

  1414. to verse 12

  1415. of Exodus.

  1416. Exodus.

  1417. When

  1418. Moses asked

  1419. his very

  1420. first question

  1421. and God

  1422. said,

  1423. I will be

  1424. with you,

  1425. he also

  1426. said something

  1427. else,

  1428. something very

  1429. interesting.

  1430. He said,

  1431. and this

  1432. will be the

  1433. sign to

  1434. you that

  1435. I,

  1436. who have

  1437. sent you,

  1438. when you

  1439. have brought

  1440. the people

  1441. out of

  1442. Egypt,

  1443. you will

  1444. worship

  1445. God on

  1446. this mountain.

  1447. So as

  1448. soon as

  1449. they came

  1450. out of

  1451. Egypt,

  1452. they were

  1453. going to

  1454. gather together

  1455. on the

  1456. mountain and

  1457. worship God.

  1458. And that

  1459. was fulfilled

  1460. on Mount

  1461. Sinai when

  1462. they all

  1463. came together

  1464. and worshipped.

  1465. A little

  1466. earlier,

  1467. Ralph referred

  1468. to it,

  1469. there's going

  1470. to be a

  1471. time for

  1472. us as

  1473. believers in

  1474. Christ when

  1475. we too are

  1476. going to be

  1477. finally rescued,

  1478. when we're

  1479. going to be

  1480. in eternity

  1481. with God,

  1482. when we

  1483. will gather

  1484. together and

  1485. worship.

  1486. Let me read

  1487. these verses

  1488. from Revelation

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  1489. chapter 7,

  1490. which Ralph

  1491. mentioned.

  1492. And we

  1493. also,

  1494. you might

  1495. recall as

  1496. we read

  1497. it,

  1498. that we

  1499. also sang

  1500. in one

  1501. of our

  1502. songs.

  1503. In

  1504. verse 9

  1505. of chapter

  1506. 7 of

  1507. Revelation,

  1508. it is

  1509. written,

  1510. After this

  1511. I looked,

  1512. and there

  1513. before me

  1514. was a

  1515. great

  1516. multitude

  1517. that no

  1518. one could

  1519. count,

  1520. from every

  1521. nation,

  1522. tribe,

  1523. people,

  1524. and language

  1525. standing

  1526. before the

  1527. throne and

  1528. in front

  1529. of the

  1530. Lamb.

  1531. they were

  1532. wearing white

  1533. robes and

  1534. were holding

  1535. palm branches

  1536. in their

  1537. hands,

  1538. and they

  1539. cried out

  1540. in a loud

  1541. voice,

  1542. salvation

  1543. belongs to

  1544. our God

  1545. who sits

  1546. on the

  1547. throne and

  1548. to the

  1549. Lamb.

  1550. There was

  1551. no one

  1552. else that

  1553. could save

  1554. the Israelites,

  1555. and there was

  1556. no one else

  1557. could save

  1558. us.

  1559. Salvation

  1560. belongs to

  1561. our God,

  1562. and that

  1563. will be

  1564. for us,

  1565. we can

  1566. look forward

  1567. to that,

  1568. that one

  1569. day we

  1570. will,

  1571. as believers,

  1572. we will be

  1573. together to

  1574. worship the

  1575. Lord.

  1576. But what

  1577. about sin?

  1578. What about

  1579. sin we've

  1580. just said,

  1581. that all

  1582. have sinned

  1583. and fall

  1584. short of

  1585. the glory

  1586. of God?

  1587. Think back

  1588. on the

  1589. judgment

  1590. that God

  1591. brought on

  1592. the Egyptians.

  1593. He said

  1594. to them

  1595. that he

  1596. would stretch

  1597. out his

  1598. hand and

  1599. strike them

  1600. because of

  1601. what they

  1602. had done.

  1603. But for

  1604. us, we

  1605. don't have

  1606. to pay

  1607. that penalty

  1608. for our

  1609. sin.

  1610. Listen to

  1611. these words

  1612. from 1

  1613. Peter 24.

  1614. He himself

  1615. bore our

  1616. sins on

  1617. the cross.

  1618. You see,

  1619. for us,

  1620. there was a

  1621. penalty to

  1622. pay as

  1623. well, but

  1624. we, unlike

  1625. the Egyptians,

  1626. didn't have

  1627. to pay it.

  1628. It was

  1629. Christ who

  1630. paid for

  1631. that penalty

  1632. penalty.

  1633. But there's

  1634. one other

  1635. thing that

  1636. we can

  1637. learn from

  1638. this rescue,

  1639. and that's

  1640. a further

  1641. revelation of

  1642. God.

  1643. We have

  1644. seen how

  1645. God was

  1646. revealing his

  1647. name, the

  1648. covenant name,

  1649. I am.

  1650. Does that

  1651. sound familiar

  1652. to you?

  1653. Have you

  1654. heard the

  1655. words I

  1656. am from

  1657. the New

  1658. Testament?

  1659. in John

    John 8 chapter mention

  1660. chapter 8,

  1661. Jesus

  1662. himself used

  1663. that phrase.

  1664. In chapter

  1665. 8, verse

  1666. 58, Jesus

  1667. said,

  1668. I tell

  1669. you the

  1670. truth.

  1671. Jesus

  1672. answered,

  1673. before Abraham

  1674. was born,

  1675. I am.

  1676. Jesus was

  1677. using the

  1678. very name

  1679. of God

  1680. for himself.

  1681. blasphemy.

  1682. Now, if

  1683. that was a

  1684. mere man

  1685. did that,

  1686. he would

  1687. have deserved

  1688. to be accused

  1689. of blasphemy.

  1690. But Jesus

  1691. said, I tell

  1692. you the truth,

  1693. because this

  1694. was the

  1695. truth.

  1696. And if we

  1697. think, oh

  1698. well, maybe

  1699. that wasn't

  1700. what Jesus

  1701. was saying,

  1702. well, the

  1703. people at that

  1704. time certainly

  1705. understood what

  1706. he was saying,

  1707. because the

  1708. following verse

  1709. says,

  1710. at this,

  1711. they picked

  1712. up stones

  1713. to stone

  1714. him, but

  1715. Jesus hid

  1716. himself.

  1717. They knew

  1718. exactly what

  1719. Jesus was

  1720. doing, because

  1721. Jesus was

  1722. identifying,

  1723. making himself

  1724. equal to

  1725. God.

  1726. And now

  1727. we have a

  1728. wonderful

  1729. opportunity to

  1730. know more

  1731. about God

  1732. through Jesus.

  1733. Jesus said

  1734. in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  1735. chapter 14,

  1736. that anyone

  1737. who has

  1738. seen him

  1739. has seen

  1740. the Father.

  1741. And Hebrews,

  1742. wonderful words

  1743. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  1744. chapter 1,

  1745. they say

  1746. that Jesus

  1747. is the

  1748. radiance

  1749. of God's

  1750. glory, and

  1751. the exact

  1752. representation

  1753. of his

  1754. being.

  1755. We now

  1756. have the

  1757. benefit of

  1758. having further

  1759. revelation of

  1760. God in

  1761. Jesus.

  1762. So, what

  1763. can we learn

  1764. from this?

  1765. After all,

  1766. we've concluded

  1767. that God is

  1768. able to

  1769. save.

  1770. But you

  1771. know, as

  1772. believers, we

  1773. can go through

  1774. difficult times

  1775. we can go

  1776. through struggles,

  1777. we can get

  1778. tired, and

  1779. there can be

  1780. times, if

  1781. we're honest,

  1782. that we feel

  1783. God isn't

  1784. there, or

  1785. he's not

  1786. listening to

  1787. us.

  1788. So what

  1789. can we do?

  1790. Well, we

  1791. can reflect on

  1792. God's character.

  1793. We can learn

  1794. from this

  1795. passage about

  1796. the uniqueness

  1797. of God, the

  1798. fact that there's

  1799. no one greater

  1800. than God, and

  1801. the fact that he

  1802. is able to

  1803. save.

  1804. We can reflect

  1805. on the fact that

  1806. he keeps

  1807. his promises.

  1808. We have

  1809. his continuous

  1810. presence, because

  1811. we can lose

  1812. sight of God, but

  1813. we can pick up

  1814. God's word and

  1815. meditate on

  1816. various passages

  1817. that speak of

  1818. God.

  1819. Think of passages

  1820. such as Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1821. chapter 40, or

  1822. Colossians chapter

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1823. 1, that speak of

  1824. the supremacy of

  1825. Christ.

  1826. When Moses met

  1827. with God and

  1828. God spoke, his

  1829. reaction was to

  1830. hide his face.

  1831. he was in

  1832. awe of God.

  1833. Do we

  1834. sometimes lose

  1835. that sense of

  1836. awe of God?

  1837. When we read

  1838. God's word and

  1839. we realize how

  1840. great God is, we

  1841. can relive that

  1842. sense of awe,

  1843. because God is

  1844. so much more

  1845. wonderful, and

  1846. when we think we

  1847. might have him

  1848. sussed, well, we

  1849. don't, because God

  1850. is far greater than

  1851. we can even ever

  1852. imagine.

  1853. rest in God.

  1854. Do you know when

  1855. we get up tomorrow

  1856. morning as a

  1857. believer, we don't

  1858. have to think about

  1859. how can we please

  1860. God today such that

  1861. he'll make sure he

  1862. saves us.

  1863. We don't have to

  1864. worry, well, what

  1865. if I do something

  1866. today and I don't

  1867. end up being among

  1868. that great throng in

  1869. Revelation.

  1870. When Jesus died on

  1871. the cross, he said,

  1872. it is finished.

  1873. We cannot add to

  1874. our salvation.

  1875. We can rest in

  1876. that.

  1877. But in that

  1878. resting in Jesus, we

  1879. can also find

  1880. refreshment.

  1881. Think of these

  1882. words in Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1883. chapter 40.

  1884. Let me read them

  1885. out.

  1886. Why do you say,

  1887. O Jacob, and

  1888. complain, O Israel,

  1889. my way is hidden

  1890. from the Lord?

  1891. My cause is

  1892. disregarded by my

  1893. God.

  1894. But look at what

  1895. Isaiah says.

  1896. He says, do you

  1897. not know, have you

  1898. not heard, the

  1899. Lord is the

  1900. everlasting God, the

  1901. creator of the

  1902. ends of the earth.

  1903. We can rest in

  1904. that God.

  1905. He will not grow

  1906. tired or weary, and

  1907. his understanding

  1908. no one can

  1909. fathom.

  1910. In verse 29, it

  1911. reads, he gives

  1912. strength to the

  1913. weary, because we

  1914. do get weary.

  1915. And increases the

  1916. power of the

  1917. weak.

  1918. Even youths grow

  1919. tired and weary, and

  1920. young men stumble and

  1921. fall.

1922. But listen to this, but

1923. those who hope in the

  1924. Lord will renew their

  1925. strengths.

1926. And when we rest in

1927. God, we can renew our

  1928. strength.

  1929. They will soar on

  1930. wings like eagles.

1931. They will run and not

  1932. grow weary.

1933. They will walk and not

  1934. be faint.

  1935. And finally, we can

  1936. rely on God.

  1937. We've just read that

  1938. about resting in

  1939. God.

1940. We can totally rely on

  1941. him for our

  1942. salvation.

  1943. And when he makes

  1944. promises to us, he

  1945. will fulfill them.

  1946. So when he promises

  1947. that our sin is

  1948. forgiven, it's

  1949. forgiven.

  1950. And when he promises

  1951. that we will spend

  1952. eternity with him, we

  1953. will do that, because

1954. we can, he is totally

  1955. trustworthy.

1956. So is God a mighty

  1957. God?

1958. Is he mighty to save?

  1959. The Israelites could

1960. say yes, and we too

  1961. can say yes.

  1962. Let's just bow our

  1963. heads and pray.

  1964. Amen.

  1965. Father, thank you

  1966. indeed that you are

  1967. mighty to save.

1968. I thank you that, as

  1969. we read, when you

  1970. saw the Israelites, you

  1971. saw, you heard, and

  1972. you were concerned.

  1973. But you also came

  1974. down.

1975. And I thank you that

1976. we can see that as a

  1977. picture of what Jesus

1978. did for us in coming

1979. down to take our sin

  1980. upon himself.

  1981. Unlike the Egyptians, we

1982. didn't have to pay for

1983. the penalty for our sin,

1984. but it was all paid in

  1985. Jesus.

1986. I thank you that in

1987. Jesus we see and learn

  1988. more about you, Father.

1989. I thank you for the

  1990. great truths of your

1991. word that point us to

  1992. the promise of eternity

1993. with you, and that as

  1994. believers we can look

  1995. forward to spending

  1996. eternity with you in

  1997. worship and in praise.

  1998. Salvation belongs to
