  1. Bibles, it's on page 1011. So if you've got a church Bible that's looking really clean and fresh,

  2. then it's the new church Bible and that's on page 1011. If it's the old one, then I don't know what

  3. page it's on. It's probably very similar, 1010 or 1012. So Mark chapter 8 verses 22.

    Mark 8:22

  4. They came to Bethsaida and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.

  5. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spat on the

  6. man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, do you see anything? He looked up and said, I see

  7. people. They look like trees walking around. Once more, Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes.

  8. Then his eyes were opened. His sight was restored and he saw everything clearly. Jesus sent him home

  9. saying, don't even go into the village. Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around

  10. Caesarea Philippi. On the way, he asked them, who do people say that I am? They replied, some say John

  11. the Baptist, others say Elijah and still others, one of the prophets. But what about you? He asked,

  12. who do you say that I am? Peter answered, you are the Messiah. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone

  13. about him. He then began to teach them that the son of man must suffer many things and be rejected

  14. by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after

  15. three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

  16. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. Get behind me, Satan, he said.

  17. You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns. Then he called the crowd to him,

  18. along with his disciples and said, whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves,

  19. take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever

  20. loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the

  21. whole world yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? If anyone

  22. is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the son of man will be ashamed

  23. of them when he comes in his father's glory with the holy angels. And he said to them, truly I tell you,

  24. some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God has come with power.

  25. Thank you, Ken.

  26. Thank you, Alex.

  27. We'll just have a moment of prayer.

  28. Heavenly Father, thank you for your precious word.

  29. Thank you that through your word we can see and hear your precious son, Jesus.

  30. We ask you that you would bless your word to us this morning, that we may see and hear your

  31. blessed son ever more clearly and so form us to be ever more like him in his image.

  32. As for those who do not know your son, we pray that you would bless them with eyes to see and ears

  33. to hear him this morning. In the name of your son, we pray. Amen.

  34. Well, for those of you who weren't here last week, I was. And unfortunately, I had a scheduling

  35. conflict and I didn't realize I was down to preach this week, not last week. So everybody

  36. made sure to say to me, make sure you come back now next week. So I understand it's a very rare

  37. privilege for a visiting speaker to be asked to speak again so quickly. So I'm glad that

  38. you've honored me in this fashion. So here I am, I suppose, in my other good shirt.

  39. And anyway, so this passage of scripture is one that I suppose when I was young in the faith,

  40. I didn't really, especially this opening section with the miracle, I just didn't get what was

  41. going on here. It's going to seem to be a bit of a strange one. So let's read through

  42. just those first few verses again. I'll read them through and we'll see what happens exactly.

  43. We'll just get a crisp grip on this scene again. So the disciples, they came to Bethsaida

  44. and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand

  45. and led him outside the village. When he spat on the man's eyes and put his hands on him,

  46. Jesus asked, do you see anything? He looked up and said, I see people and are they trees walking

  47. around? Once more, Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes and when his eyes were opened,

  48. the sight was restored and he saw everything clearly. And Jesus sent him home saying,

  49. don't even go into the village. Well, just to kind of give you a grip of where I'm coming from,

  50. Rachel and I actually were recently in Killarney and we stayed in a B&B that we like. It's kind

  51. of near the town centre and it's not the most glamorous place in the world, but it's clean

  52. and pretty well appointed. And we enjoy chats with the hosts who are very nice people and very down

  53. to earth. And during our last visit, they told us an interesting story. And as you know, anyone who's

  54. been to Kerry knows that all the stories you hear down there are entirely true.

  55. So apparently, once upon a time, and the host swears by this, there was a church, a local church nearby

  56. and they had this depiction of, a stained glass depiction of the Madonna and child. And we've all

  57. seen these, right? We're living in formerly Catholic Ireland. You could hardly throw a stone in any village

  58. in Ireland without hitting one. So this was a depiction of the Madonna and child, Mary and the infant Jesus.

  59. But there was something different about this little baby Jesus. And specifically, the difference was

  60. that this little baby Jesus had a big, black, beautiful beard. So people were kind of amused and

  61. confused by this. Nobody knows how this picture came to be there. Nobody knew what the origins of this

  62. particular artwork was. And, you know, they were thinking, of course, like this, the artist is

  63. clearly trying to say something. He's clearly trying to teach something through this depiction

  64. of a bearded infant. You know, people thought it was some sort of metaphor, perhaps. Maybe this was

  65. supposed to kind of jar our minds into thinking of Jesus as the eternal Christ and that he was once a

  66. baby. Now he's a man and all this kind of thing. There was all sorts of theories and speculations

  67. about this. And then one time, apparently, there was a man with some expertise in the area of stained

  68. glass and churches and all that sort of a thing. And he decided to take a look for himself because

  69. this had become almost a minor draw all on its own. So he approached the image and he looked at it and

  70. he considered it for a moment. And then he took a handkerchief out of his pocket and proceeded to wipe away

  71. the black marker that some joker could have put there 20 years previously.

  72. And I suppose, really, this, I suppose, is just to illustrate that our imaginations or depictions

  73. of Jesus are prone to error. They're so often wrong sometimes. And how we conceive of Jesus and how we

  74. think of him is perhaps even vulnerable to deliberate distortion by jokers and charlatans.

  75. Now, it's a silly story. And whether it's true or not, please be true.

  76. But questions over who Jesus was were rife at the time of this particular section of Mark's Gospel.

  77. Speculation as to who he was was something that people were engaged in.

  78. So, if we just go back to our text for a minute, we have this kind of strange miracle,

  79. this kind of strange two-stage healing that's taking place.

  80. We have this blind man. And how often do we read of blind people being healed and deaf people

  81. being given hearing?

  82. But people brought this blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch him, begged him to heal him.

  83. So, Jesus takes him away from the village, away from the crowds.

  84. And he touches him and he's given partial sight.

  85. And he asks him, do you see anything? And he said, I see people, but they're like trees walking.

  86. That's kind of strange, isn't it? I mean, that's not your typical kind of,

  87. how you would conceive of a healing.

  88. Here's this blind man, being given partial sight.

  89. Then Jesus lays hands on him again.

  90. And this time he's healed completely. He can see perfectly.

  91. And, I mean, this is kind of odd.

  92. You know, this is kind of a strange, like, when I read this when I was young in the faith,

  93. I didn't have a clue what was going on.

  94. I mean, you know, your instinct, of course, is to kind of say, well, Jesus obviously meant to do this.

  95. He wasn't, like, distracted halfway through or anything like that.

  96. But Jesus' miracles were always meant to teach.

  97. There were never, there was nothing incidental about them.

  98. Jesus' miracles, and the New Testament words are actually signs and wonders,

  99. are very deliberately performed.

  100. There was nothing accidental about them.

  101. They all revealed something very important.

  102. Jesus' miraculous signs, they point to something.

  103. I mean, these astonishing wonders are meant to teach us something.

  104. And in this surrounding section of Mark's Gospel,

  105. something about Jesus himself, rather like the sight being given to this man,

  106. has gradually been revealed to the people.

  107. But there's one other detail here at the end of this story.

  108. Once Jesus had healed this man, what did he command him to do?

  109. He sent him directly home.

  110. And he told him to keep quiet and to avoid the village.

  111. Jesus apparently wanted him to say nothing about this to anyone.

  112. At least for the time being.

  113. And there's a reason for this.

  114. But in a moment, he's actually going to do the same thing again.

  115. So we'll take a look at this secret aspect to Jesus' work,

  116. and we'll get to the bottom of it in a little bit.

  117. But for the time being, let's just read the next few verses.

  118. Verse 27.

  119. Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi.

  120. On the way he asked them,

  121. Who do people say that I am?

  122. They replied,

  123. Some say John the Baptist.

  124. Others say Elijah.

  125. And still others, one of the prophets.

  126. But what about you?

  127. Jesus asked,

  128. Who do you say that I am?

  129. Peter answered,

  130. You are the Messiah.

  131. And Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

  132. So, after this two-stage healing of the blind man,

  133. Jesus journeys on to Caesarea Philippi.

  134. And on the way he asks them,

  135. Who do people say that I am?

  136. And,

  137. if we actually had been reading through Mark's Gospel from the beginning,

  138. we would have seen that in chapter 6,

  139. that there had been speculation about who Jesus was,

  140. and we would know what the disciples are about to tell him.

  141. Spike,

  142. the speculation as to Jesus' true identity had been rife.

  143. I mean,

  144. it was obvious to everyone who had heard this man speak,

  145. or seen him do his works,

  146. that this was not your typical rabbi.

  147. And here,

  148. Jesus' disciples pass on the gossip that we would have already read.

  149. They tell him that Herod,

  150. who had just executed John the Baptist,

  151. believed that Jesus was somehow John the Baptist again,

  152. kind of,

  153. almost kind of come back from the dead to haunt him.

  154. Other people said that he was the returning Elijah,

  155. as promised by the prophet Malachi,

  156. or perhaps one of the other prophets.

  157. In any case,

  158. Jesus doesn't let them run down these kind of rabbit trails for too long.

  159. He immediately makes it personal and pointed for each of them.

  160. He asks them again,

  161. but who do you say that I am?

  162. And Peter's next few words,

  163. they immediately enter history,

  164. don't they?

  165. You are the Christ.

  166. And he was right.

  167. So what was Jesus' response?

  168. Was it a congratulation?

  169. A pat on the back and a little rolled up diploma from Munster Bible College?

  170. No.

  171. Mark says,

  172. he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

  173. And there it is again,

  174. this command to keep silent about who he was.

  175. It's kind of baffling.

  176. You know,

  177. as New Testament Christians,

  178. 2,000 years on,

  179. in being,

  180. what I suppose could be categorized as evangelicals,

  181. telling people about Jesus

  182. is or should be second nature to us.

  183. But here we have Jesus giving explicit commands

  184. to keep quiet,

  185. keep stum.

  186. But he won't keep us in suspense much longer

  187. because

  188. he immediately starts to

  189. reveal something more about himself.

  190. So let's go back to verse 31.

  191. He then began to teach them

  192. that the Son of Man must suffer many things

  193. and be rejected by the elders,

  194. the chief priests,

  195. and the teachers of the law,

  196. and that he must be killed,

  197. and after three days,

  198. rise again.

  199. He spoke plainly about this

  200. and Peter took him aside

  201. and began to rebuke him.

  202. But when Jesus turned

  203. and looked at his disciples,

  204. he rebuked Peter.

  205. Get behind me, Satan,

  206. he said.

  207. You do not have in mind

  208. the concerns of God,

  209. but merely human concerns.

  210. Now that Peter has identified him,

  211. Jesus begins to tell everything

  212. to his closest followers.

  213. He now tells them

  214. for the first time

  215. of the grim fate

  216. that lay ahead of them

  217. as his,

  218. or laid ahead of him

  219. as their Messiah.

  220. He gives them the awful news

  221. that he was to be rejected

  222. by the Jewish establishment

  223. and executed

  224. like a criminal.

  225. And this is too much for Peter.

  226. And now,

  227. we begin to see

  228. why Jesus

  229. had been telling people

  230. to keep quiet about him.

  231. You see,

  232. Peter,

  233. almost like our blind man earlier,

  234. was gradually beginning

  235. to see Jesus

  236. for who he really was.

  237. And it's almost as if

  238. you're looking up at the sky

  239. and it's kind of a

  240. partially clouded day

  241. and then the sun comes out

  242. from behind the cloud

  243. and it's just too intense.

  244. That's where Peter was at.

  245. Because Peter,

  246. like almost all of his fellow Jews,

  247. had expected this

  248. all-conquering Messiah.

  249. One who would appear in glory

  250. and swat Israel's enemies aside

  251. in an overwhelming display of force.

  252. But this

  253. submission unto death thing

  254. just

  255. didn't compute.

  256. Didn't work.

  257. And Peter was

  258. capital O

  259. offended

  260. by this.

  261. and he takes Jesus aside

  262. and begins to tell him off.

  263. And Jesus' response

  264. is very grave.

  265. Get behind me,

  266. Satan,

  267. he said.

  268. You do not have in mind

  269. the concerns of God

  270. but merely

  271. human concerns.

  272. Ouch.

  273. I mean,

  274. Peter had simply spoken rashly.

  275. hadn't he?

  276. Peter is famously impulsive.

  277. And he just couldn't contain

  278. his disbelief

  279. that Israel's Messiah

  280. could die

  281. such

  282. a shameful

  283. death.

  284. Cursed is anyone

  285. who hangs on a tree.

  286. And with hindsight,

  287. we know,

  288. of course,

  289. that Jesus was right

  290. to rebuke him

  291. but to say this,

  292. to say,

  293. get behind me,

  294. Satan.

  295. Why would he say that thing?

  296. Well,

  297. James says

  298. in the third chapter

  299. of the epistle

  300. that

  301. if you have

  302. bitter jealousy

  303. and selfish ambition

  304. in your hearts,

  305. do not boast

  306. and be false

  307. to the truth.

  308. This is not the wisdom

  309. that comes from above

  310. but is earthly,

  311. unspiritual,

  312. demonic.

  313. And we also read

  314. in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  315. how when Satan

  316. had finished his temptations,

  317. he departed Jesus

  318. to return at a more

  319. opportune time.

  320. And you know,

  321. truth be told,

  322. many of us,

  323. and I would count me

  324. as somebody

  325. who would probably be

  326. on the hot-headed side

  327. by nature,

  328. are probably more like Peter

  329. than we would like to admit.

  330. I mean,

  331. we would much rather

  332. take part

  333. in an all-conquering

  334. Christianity

  335. that allowed all of us

  336. to look like

  337. spiritual heroes

  338. as we accomplished

  339. great feats for God

  340. in luxurious comfort

  341. and, you know,

  342. while looking amazing

  343. the whole time

  344. while doing it,

  345. you know,

  346. with the Instagram account

  347. and the Facebook followers

  348. and all the rest of it.

  349. But this is a self-exalting attitude

  350. and it does bear

  351. a dreadful resemblance

  352. to that of the

  353. Prince of Darkness.

  354. That particular attitude

  355. is not healthy.

  356. It is not good.

  357. Now, I mean,

  358. while our impulses

  359. can be for good,

  360. Jesus' rebuke of Peter

  361. is frightening.

  362. And it does show us

  363. that our impulses

  364. and our instincts

  365. and our inclinations

  366. can also be

  367. much darker spiritually

  368. than perhaps we realize.

  369. And this is why

  370. Jesus simply could not

  371. let people going around

  372. yapping excitedly

  373. about the arrival

  374. of the Messiah.

  375. I mean,

  376. a little knowledge

  377. is a dangerous thing,

  378. isn't it?

  379. To have only

  380. a partial picture

  381. is to have a

  382. distorted picture.

  383. And this is kind of

  384. what is behind

  385. what is happening

  386. in our text.

  387. Jesus is always teaching

  388. throughout his ministry

  389. with both words

  390. and actions.

  391. He is both showing

  392. and telling

  393. who he is.

  394. Unlike our blind man earlier,

  395. Peter could see a little,

  396. but he couldn't

  397. really see clearly.

  398. He understood

  399. who Jesus was,

  400. but he was

  401. utterly clueless

  402. as to Jesus' mission.

  403. And today,

  404. remembering

  405. our bearded baby

  406. from earlier,

  407. how many times

  408. do we see

  409. partial or distorted

  410. pictures of Christ

  411. around us?

  412. Jesus as just

  413. a great teacher.

  414. Jesus as merely

  415. a great moralist.

  416. Jesus as,

  417. it would seem,

  418. exclusively only

  419. our problem solver.

  420. A wise man,

  421. a political radical,

  422. a Jesus who will

  423. heal every disease

  424. and solve any problem

  425. by spellcasting his name

  426. like some magical incantation.

  427. What does Jesus

  428. look like

  429. in the lives of people

  430. who profess him

  431. as saviour,

  432. but is not,

  433. as far as anyone can tell,

  434. their Lord?

  435. Now,

  436. I'm certain that

  437. Jesus was quite aware

  438. of the speculation

  439. surrounding him

  440. before he asked

  441. that question

  442. of his disciples,

  443. and at that stage,

  444. nobody had clear sight

  445. of who Jesus is.

  446. They could see

  447. partially,

  448. but they could not

  449. see clearly.

  450. this was all part

  451. of the plan.

  452. Jesus was granting

  453. Peter and the other

  454. disciples

  455. spiritual sight

  456. in stages.

  457. And now,

  458. in one of the most

  459. famous passages

  460. in the New Testament,

  461. who he is

  462. and what this means

  463. for their lives

  464. and means for ours

  465. is going to become

  466. crystal clear.

  467. So,

  468. following this rather

  469. pointed exchange

  470. with Peter,

  471. Jesus doesn't waste

  472. an awkward moment.

  473. He uses it

  474. to teach his disciples

  475. and press the truth

  476. home.

  477. Let's just look

  478. at the next few verses.

  479. Verse 34.

  480. Then he called

  481. a crowd to him,

  482. along with his disciples,

  483. and said,

  484. whoever

  485. wants to be

  486. my disciple

  487. must deny themselves

  488. and take up

  489. their cross

  490. and follow me.

  491. for whoever

  492. wants to save

  493. their life

  494. will lose it,

  495. but whoever

  496. loses their life

  497. for me

  498. and for the gospel

  499. will save it.

  500. What good is it

  501. for someone

  502. to gain

  503. the whole world

  504. and yet

  505. forfeit

  506. their soul?

  507. Or what can

  508. anyone give

  509. in exchange

  510. for their soul?

  511. This is the

  512. crucial moment

  513. for us here

  514. today,

  515. this afternoon,

  516. when we start

  517. to piece

  518. all of this

  519. together,

  520. because it is

  521. here

  522. in our text

  523. with these words

  524. that Jesus

  525. starts to give

  526. his followers

  527. a clearer

  528. and clearer

  529. vision

  530. of who

  531. he really is.

  532. And not only

  533. that,

  534. he was now

  535. making this

  536. personal

  537. for each

  538. of them.

  539. describing

  540. to each

  541. one

  542. the true

  543. cost

  544. of following

  545. him.

  546. First of all,

  547. he tells them

  548. that his

  549. identity as

  550. Christ,

  551. the Messiah,

  552. meant that

  553. following him

  554. was even

  555. more important

  556. than their

  557. own lives.

  558. I mean,

  559. whoever loses

  560. his life

  561. for my sake

  562. and the

  563. gospels?

  564. Serious

  565. stuff.

  566. Then he goes

  567. beyond even

  568. this,

  569. to say

  570. that even

  571. if one

  572. could acquire

  573. the whole

  574. world,

  575. it would

  576. not compare

  577. to losing

  578. their own

  579. soul.

  580. Try and

  581. comprehend

  582. that for a

  583. moment.

  584. Jesus is

  585. not merely

  586. talking about

  587. the globe

  588. that we're

  589. on,

  590. but the

  591. entire world

  592. has always

  593. existed from

  594. his eternal

  595. perspective.

  596. All its

  597. creatures,

  598. all its

  599. ages,

  600. its aeons,

  601. its history

  602. and its

  603. future,

  604. vast as

  605. all that is

  606. in its

  607. breadth and

  608. its scale

  609. and its

  610. scope,

  611. it is all

  612. as nothing.

  613. When compared

  614. to the

  615. fate of

  616. one human

  617. soul before

  618. God.

  619. That's

  620. staggering.

  621. Like our

  622. stained glass

  623. image earlier,

  624. the distortion

  625. is being

  626. wiped away.

  627. Like our

  628. blind man

  629. earlier,

  630. Jesus'

  631. followers are

  632. finally starting

  633. to see him

  634. with unclouded

  635. eyes.

  636. In our text,

  637. it was Peter

  638. who saw him

  639. first,

  640. but even

  641. then,

  642. he couldn't

  643. make up

  644. the whole

  645. picture.

  646. Now Jesus

  647. is revealing

  648. himself to

  649. all his

  650. followers

  651. explicitly,

  652. whereas before

  653. he had been

  654. actively hiding

  655. his true

  656. identity,

  657. and his

  658. identity had

  659. real consequences

  660. for them,

  661. and has

  662. consequences for

  663. us too.

  664. But this

  665. begs the

  666. question though,

  667. why not

  668. simply just

  669. tell them all

  670. this right

  671. from the

  672. start?

  673. I mean,

  674. all this

  675. speculation

  676. about who

  677. Jesus is,

  678. all this

  679. kind of

  680. hiding of

  681. identities,

  682. and gradual

  683. revelations,

  684. and moving

  685. in the shadows,

  686. the astonishing

  687. miracles,

  688. and then the

  689. secrecy that

  690. came after it.

  691. No wonder

  692. people were

  693. confused about

  694. him.

  695. I mean,

  696. perhaps you're

  697. maybe a bit

  698. confused yourself,

  699. right?

  700. But if you

  701. are,

  702. your mind

  703. has actually

  704. been opened

  705. up to my

  706. point,

  707. or rather

  708. a subtext

  709. of Mark's

  710. gospel up to

  711. now.

  712. that when

  713. people are

  714. unable to

  715. see Jesus

  716. for who

  717. he is,

  718. they're also

  719. unable to

  720. hear him

  721. clearly.

  722. I mean,

  723. how many of

  724. Jesus' miracles

  725. are ones

  726. where he

  727. grants sight

  728. to blind

  729. people,

  730. hearing to

  731. deaf people?

  732. How many

  733. times has he

  734. raised the

  735. dead?

  736. His works

  737. set the

  738. stage for

  739. his words.

  740. Jesus had

  741. to show

  742. before he

  743. could tell.

  744. And now

  745. he has just

  746. told them

  747. that following

  748. an apparently

  749. doomed Messiah

  750. was more

  751. important than

  752. even their

  753. own lives.

  754. And this

  755. is why he

  756. didn't lay

  757. the whole

  758. truth on

  759. them right

  760. away.

  761. The

  762. consequences

  763. for their

  764. lives would

  765. have been

  766. too crushing

  767. to bear.

  768. Only once

  769. they had

  770. caught enough

  771. glimpses of

  772. him,

  773. of who he

  774. really was,

  775. could they

  776. then have

  777. the confidence

  778. in him

  779. that was

  780. necessary to

  781. each bear

  782. the individual

  783. consequences for

  784. following him.

  785. And let's

  786. only know in

  787. our passage

  788. for today that

  789. Jesus doesn't

  790. just reveal who

  791. he is, but

  792. also what he

  793. had come to

  794. do.

  795. He was to

  796. be the

  797. crucified and

  798. risen Christ

  799. who raises

  800. the dead,

  801. opens the

  802. eyes of the

  803. spiritually blind,

  804. gives those

  805. who are deaf

  806. the ability

  807. to hear God.

  808. and calls

  809. those who

  810. confess him

  811. as Lord

  812. and profess

  813. him as

  814. saviour to

  815. follow him

  816. down that

  817. same road

  818. of cross

  819. bearing.

  820. I mean,

  821. that's a

  822. glorious truth,

  823. but it's a

  824. heavy one.

  825. But to

  826. return to our

  827. text for a

  828. moment,

  829. back to

  830. verse 37,

  831. he now makes

  832. those words

  833. bind on all

  834. those who

  835. would follow

  836. him, not

  837. just the

  838. disciples

  839. present in

  840. that moment.

  841. Sorry,

  842. verse 38,

  843. excuse me.

  844. If anyone

  845. is ashamed

  846. of me and

  847. of my

  848. words and

  849. this

  850. adulterous

  851. and sinful

  852. generation,

  853. the Son

  854. of Man

  855. will be

  856. ashamed of

  857. them when

  858. he comes in

  859. his Father's

  860. glory with

  861. the holy

  862. angels.

  863. Jesus knows

  864. that we're

  865. tempted to be

  866. ashamed of

  867. his words.

  868. he knows

  869. that many

  870. of us,

  871. me

  872. included,

  873. especially

  874. me,

  875. I find

  876. it's hard

  877. to read

  878. even as I

  879. speak it,

  880. have that

  881. tendency to

  882. be a little

  883. gun shy

  884. when an

  885. opportunity to

  886. share the

  887. gospel presents

  888. itself.

  889. What sort

  890. of feelings

  891. do we

  892. experience in

  893. some of

  894. those moments?

  895. some people

  896. are gifted

  897. evangelists,

  898. I'm not

  899. one of

  900. them.

  901. I feel the

  902. way of this

  903. even as I

  904. speak to

  905. you.

  906. The urge

  907. to gloss

  908. over the

  909. confrontational

  910. aspects of

  911. the gospel,

  912. it can be

  913. overwhelming.

  914. The urge

  915. to skate

  916. around the

  917. number of

  918. issues is

  919. very,

  920. very powerful.

  921. I feel it.

  922. I'm sure

  923. that on some

  924. level we

  925. all feel it,

  926. but we

  927. cannot yield

  928. to it.

  929. You know,

  930. I'm not

  931. trying to

  932. offend,

  933. I'm just

  934. simply pointing

  935. to what

  936. Jesus is

  937. saying,

  938. or else

  939. why would

  940. he have

  941. said it?

  942. Jesus

  943. makes it

  944. clear that

  945. submission to

  946. him will

  947. mean that

  948. we will

  949. endure some

  950. degree of

  951. disgrace for

  952. him.

  953. This is

  954. where I'm

  955. grateful for

  956. Connor last

  957. week.

  958. that was

  959. his first

  960. sermon,

  961. preaching

  962. about

  963. wives

  964. submitting to

  965. husbands and

  966. husbands laying

  967. down lives

  968. for wives.

  969. Not okay in

  970. our cultural

  971. context.

  972. But what

  973. is it that

  974. is so

  975. offensive about

  976. Jesus'

  977. message?

  978. Well,

  979. back in the

  980. first chapter

  981. of Mark,

  982. for one

  983. example,

  984. what is the

  985. message that

  986. opens his

  987. ministry?

  988. There's no

  989. need to

  990. go there.

  991. I'll read

  992. it to

  993. you.

  994. The time

  995. is fulfilled.

  996. The kingdom

  997. of God

  998. is at

  999. hand.

  1000. Repent

  1001. and believe

  1002. the gospel.

  1003. There it

  1004. is,

  1005. repentance.

  1006. That's

  1007. the problem.

  1008. As fallen

  1009. creatures,

  1010. apart from

  1011. Christ,

  1012. as sinful

  1013. and rebellious

  1014. humanity,

  1015. we love

  1016. our sin.

  1017. We,

  1018. nowadays,

  1019. identify

  1020. ourselves by

  1021. our sin.

  1022. We don't

  1023. want to

  1024. change our

  1025. minds about

  1026. sin.

  1027. Because that's

  1028. what repentance

  1029. means.

  1030. We want to

  1031. live apart

  1032. from Christ,

  1033. as fallen

  1034. people,

  1035. our lives

  1036. on our

  1037. terms,

  1038. deciding for

  1039. ourselves,

  1040. our own

  1041. level of

  1042. commitment and

  1043. comfort and

  1044. so on.

  1045. At least that's

  1046. who I was

  1047. before I became

  1048. a Christian.

  1049. We want to

  1050. set aside

  1051. God's law

  1052. and decide

  1053. for ourselves

  1054. what right

  1055. and wrong

  1056. are.

  1057. And this

  1058. was the

  1059. problem in

  1060. the garden,

  1061. wasn't it?

  1062. When you

  1063. eat that

  1064. fruit,

  1065. your eyes

  1066. shall be

  1067. opened.

  1068. You should

  1069. be like

  1070. God,

  1071. knowing good

  1072. and evil,

  1073. or in other

  1074. words,

  1075. deciding for

  1076. yourself what

  1077. good and

  1078. evil are.

  1079. And,

  1080. friends,

  1081. I don't know

  1082. everybody here.

  1083. and if you

  1084. haven't heard

  1085. this message

  1086. of repentance

  1087. before,

  1088. we pray

  1089. you would

  1090. hear it

  1091. now.

  1092. We pray

  1093. that you

  1094. would be

  1095. given ears

  1096. to hear

  1097. it,

  1098. eyes to

  1099. see Christ

  1100. for who

  1101. he is

  1102. and where

  1103. he stands

  1104. in history

  1105. as Lord

  1106. of everything,

  1107. everything.

  1108. Not

  1109. merely as a

  1110. wise man,

  1111. or as we

  1112. see in so

  1113. many church

  1114. buildings,

  1115. kind of

  1116. frozen and

  1117. time as

  1118. some mutant

  1119. powerless

  1120. child on

  1121. his mother's

  1122. lap,

  1123. but as

  1124. the creator,

  1125. the king,

  1126. the messiah,

  1127. the one

  1128. who in

  1129. love and

  1130. in perfect

  1131. obedience to

  1132. his father

  1133. sought to

  1134. rescue us

  1135. from eternal

  1136. separation from

  1137. God because

  1138. of our sin,

  1139. took the

  1140. criminal's

  1141. punishment,

  1142. which is

  1143. death,

  1144. that we

  1145. all deserve

  1146. for a

  1147. rebellion

  1148. against God.

  1149. Jesus is

  1150. the one who

  1151. lived a

  1152. sinless life

  1153. on our

  1154. behalf so

  1155. that he

  1156. could give

  1157. us his

  1158. righteousness.

  1159. If we

  1160. would only

  1161. believe that

  1162. this was

  1163. so,

  1164. see our

  1165. desperate

  1166. need,

  1167. confess our

  1168. sinfulness and

  1169. our helplessness

  1170. before him and

  1171. submit to him as

  1172. lord of our

  1173. lives.

  1174. We pray that

  1175. Jesus opens your

  1176. ears to hear his

  1177. word to you

  1178. today.

  1179. Dear friend,

  1180. you need to

  1181. change your mind

  1182. about who is

  1183. right and who

  1184. is wrong.

  1185. You need to

  1186. change your mind

  1187. about your

  1188. sin.

  1189. And that's

  1190. where the

  1191. rest of us,

  1192. the professing

  1193. believers here,

  1194. you know,

  1195. it would be

  1196. much easier

  1197. to, you

  1198. know,

  1199. to achieve

  1200. great things

  1201. for God

  1202. and have

  1203. the world

  1204. on a

  1205. string as

  1206. well.

  1207. But that's

  1208. not how

  1209. it works.

  1210. And I'm

  1211. sure,

  1212. even for

  1213. those disciples

  1214. who were

  1215. there with

  1216. Jesus,

  1217. as he said

  1218. those words,

  1219. these truths

  1220. landed on

  1221. them like a

  1222. ton of

  1223. bricks.

  1224. But Jesus,

  1225. however,

  1226. reminds them

  1227. and us,

  1228. it doesn't

  1229. end there.

  1230. The ultimate

  1231. glory is yet

  1232. to come.

  1233. First verse

  1234. of chapter

  1235. nine.

  1236. Truly I

  1237. tell you,

  1238. some who are

  1239. standing here

  1240. will not

  1241. taste death

  1242. before they

  1243. see that the

  1244. kingdom of

  1245. God has

  1246. come with

  1247. power.

  1248. Will not

  1249. taste death

  1250. before they

  1251. see that

  1252. the kingdom

  1253. of God

  1254. has come

  1255. with power.

  1256. Jesus is

  1257. coming back.

  1258. Next time

  1259. though,

  1260. he won't

  1261. be the

  1262. submissive

  1263. servant.

  1264. Next time

  1265. though,

  1266. it won't

  1267. be a game

  1268. of shadows.

  1269. He will

  1270. be the

  1271. crowned

  1272. king of

  1273. heaven and

  1274. earth,

  1275. coming to

  1276. bring his

  1277. people to

  1278. glory and

  1279. to judge

  1280. the world.

  1281. Next time

  1282. he won't

  1283. be merely

  1284. before me,

  1285. healing

  1286. miracles,

  1287. he will

  1288. bring about

  1289. a universal

  1290. resurrection.

  1291. And having

  1292. reminded his

  1293. disciples of

  1294. this future

  1295. event,

  1296. which is

  1297. coming,

  1298. he simply

  1299. didn't leave

  1300. them hanging

  1301. at this

  1302. point.

  1303. The next

  1304. event immediately

  1305. after our

  1306. text is

  1307. his

  1308. transfiguration.

  1309. And he

  1310. reveals himself

  1311. in his

  1312. full glory

  1313. to his

  1314. closest

  1315. followers.

  1316. They are

  1317. given eyes

  1318. to see

  1319. him.

  1320. and given

  1321. ears to

  1322. hear the

  1323. father saying,

  1324. this is my

  1325. beloved son.

  1326. Listen to

  1327. him.

  1328. They

  1329. miraculously

  1330. see and

  1331. hear who

  1332. Jesus is,

  1333. perfectly in

  1334. line with the

  1335. teaching signs he

  1336. has been

  1337. performing

  1338. throughout his

  1339. ministry and

  1340. with the

  1341. healing of

  1342. our blind

  1343. man today.

  1344. So,

  1345. how do we

  1346. hear from

  1347. Christ today?

  1348. How do we

  1349. see him

  1350. perform his

  1351. works?

  1352. Well,

  1353. Peter

  1354. tells us

  1355. how.

  1356. Peter,

  1357. who was

  1358. sorely

  1359. rebuked in

  1360. our passage,

  1361. tells us

  1362. how we can

  1363. do this.

  1364. And if you

  1365. want to turn

  1366. to 2

  1367. Peter 1

  1368. 16.

  1369. That's

  1370. page

  1371. 12222

  1372. in the

  1373. New

  1374. Bible.

  1375. 2

  1376. Peter

  1377. 1

  1378. 16.

  1379. For we

  1380. did not

  1381. follow

  1382. cleverly

  1383. devised

  1384. stories,

  1385. only told

  1386. you about

  1387. the coming

  1388. of our

  1389. Lord Jesus

  1390. Christ in

  1391. power,

  1392. but we

  1393. were eyewitnesses

  1394. of his

  1395. majesty.

  1396. He

  1397. received

  1398. honour

  1399. and glory

  1400. from God

  1401. the Father

  1402. when the

  1403. voice came

  1404. to him

  1405. from the

  1406. majestic

  1407. glory,

  1408. saying,

  1409. this is

  1410. my son

  1411. whom I

  1412. love,

  1413. with him

  1414. I am

  1415. well pleased.

  1416. We

  1417. ourselves

  1418. heard this

  1419. voice that

  1420. came from

  1421. heaven when

  1422. we were

  1423. with him

  1424. on that

  1425. sacred

  1426. mountain.

  1427. We

  1428. also

  1429. have the

  1430. prophetic

  1431. message as

  1432. something

  1433. completely

  1434. reliable,

  1435. and you

  1436. will do

  1437. well to

  1438. pay attention

  1439. to it,

  1440. as to a

  1441. light shining

  1442. in a

  1443. dark place

  1444. until the

  1445. day dawns,

  1446. and the

  1447. morning star

  1448. rises in

  1449. your hearts.

  1450. Above all,

  1451. you must

  1452. understand that

  1453. no prophecy

  1454. of scripture

  1455. came above

  1456. by a prophet's

  1457. own interpretation,

  1458. for prophecy

  1459. never had its

  1460. origin in

  1461. human will,

  1462. but prophets

  1463. through human,

  1464. though human,

  1465. spoke from God

  1466. as they were

  1467. carried along

  1468. by the Holy

  1469. Spirit.

  1470. Peter is

  1471. saying,

  1472. and don't

  1473. miss this,

  1474. that we

  1475. see and hear

  1476. his works

  1477. today in

  1478. in this

  1479. book,

  1480. your Bible,

  1481. which Peter

  1482. says is

  1483. something even

  1484. more certain

  1485. than seeing

  1486. the transfiguration

  1487. occur before

  1488. your own

  1489. eyes.

  1490. That's

  1491. astonishing.

  1492. What a

  1493. blessing God's

  1494. word is to

  1495. us today.

  1496. We understand

  1497. that these are

  1498. heavy truths,

  1499. but at the

  1500. same time,

  1501. our ultimate

  1502. hope is not

  1503. just in Christ

  1504. who was

  1505. 2,000 years

  1506. ago.

  1507. Our ultimate

  1508. hope is Christ

  1509. as he is

  1510. now,

  1511. Christ as

  1512. he will

  1513. return.

  1514. We pray

  1515. that this

  1516. portion of

  1517. scripture is a

  1518. blessing to us

  1519. today.

  1520. Amen.

  1521. Amen.

  1522. Our closing

  1523. hymn, I think,

  1524. is In Christ

  1525. Alone.

  1526. In Christ

  1527. Alone.

  1528. So we'll sing

  1529. this together.
