  1. Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

  2. just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the Word.

  3. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning,

  4. it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, Most Excellent Theophilus,

  5. so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

  6. Now if you could turn in your Bibles to 2 Peter, which is on page 1222 in the Church Bibles, 2 Peter chapter 1,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  7. starting in verse 16.

  8. So 2 Peter chapter 1 verse 16.

    2 Peter 1:16

  9. We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  10. but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  11. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the majestic glory,

  12. saying,

  13. This is my Son, whom I love.

  14. With him I am well pleased.

  15. We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

  16. And we have the word of the prophets made more certain,

  17. and you will do well to pay attention to it,

  18. as to a light shining in a dark place,

  19. until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  20. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.

  21. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man,

  22. but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  23. Let's pray together.

  24. Father, thank you.

  25. Thank you for your Son, the Lord Jesus.

  26. Thank you for your word.

  27. Thank you for your word.

  28. Which is a revelation of your Son,

  29. teaching us and making us known who you are.

  30. Thank you for your Holy Spirit,

  31. who teaches us,

  32. opens up our minds,

  33. so that we can understand your word,

  34. not just intellectually,

  35. but in a way that it applies to our hearts,

  36. changing us,

  37. and making us more like you.

  38. So, Father, come amongst us by your Spirit,

  39. and help us,

  40. that we might know you more and more,

  41. and come to love you in a deeper way.

  42. Thank you for your word.

  43. Bless these coming weeks as we look at Luke's Gospel together,

  44. that it would be an encouragement,

  45. that it would be an encouragement,

  46. helping us to understand the God who has come to seek us and save us,

  47. so that we in turn can seek others and bring the message of Christ to a needy world.

  48. Help us, we pray,

  49. in Jesus' name.

  50. Amen.

  51. Well, have your Bibles open in Luke's Gospel.

  52. I wonder,

  53. do you believe everything that you hear in the news?

  54. Did the Russians help Trump secure his political victory?

  55. Is climate change the reason for all the flooding across our planet?

  56. Well, according to a recent poll on Clareburn Live,

  57. 54% of people in Ireland don't trust the news they hear,

  58. and a further 19% say they are unsure.

  59. The news, they say, is,

  60. well, it's just stories that have been made up to distort,

  61. deceive, and promote a political or moral bias.

  62. It's all fake news.

  63. And with the influence of social media,

  64. it's very difficult for us to know what is fake news and what is true news.

  65. Well, Luke, who is the author of Luke's Gospel,

  66. has some news for us.

  67. Keep your finger in Luke's Gospel, Chapter 1,

  68. and flick on to Acts, Chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  69. So you've got Luke,

  70. then John,

  71. and then Acts,

  72. Acts, Chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  73. Keep your finger in Luke,

  74. and go to Acts, Chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  75. You may know that Luke is the author of two books,

  76. the Gospel of Luke,

  77. and also the Book of Acts,

  78. sometimes referred to as a two-volumed work.

  79. They're together.

  80. And this is what Luke,

  81. Acts, Chapter 1, Verse 1 says.

    Acts 1:1

  82. In my former book,

  83. so there he's referring to Luke,

  84. my first book.

  85. In my former book, Theophilus,

  86. I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach.

  87. So Luke is all about

  88. what Jesus began to do and to teach.

  89. And Acts, if we were to read through that,

  90. is what Jesus continues to do and teach,

  91. ultimately through his church,

  92. by his Spirit.

  93. Back to Luke's Gospel, Chapter 1.

  94. So Luke is all about

  95. what Jesus began to do and to teach.

  96. But at the beginning of Luke's Gospel,

  97. Luke makes this extraordinary claim.

  98. Look what he says in Luke 1, Verse 4.

    Luke 1:4

  99. He says he writes this,

  100. so that you may know the certainty

  101. of the things you have been taught.

  102. Luke wants us to know,

  103. right at the very beginning of his work,

  104. of his writings,

  105. that the things that he is going to write about,

  106. the things that you may have been taught about Jesus,

  107. is not fake news,

  108. but it's true news.

  109. It is reliable.

  110. It is dependable.

  111. You can believe it and trust it.

  112. It is certain truth.

  113. These are not made-up stories,

  114. but historical facts about a living person

  115. called Jesus Christ,

  116. who claims to be nothing less

  117. than God who has come in human form,

  118. with absolute power,

  119. and supreme authority,

  120. to seek and to save what was lost,

  121. to change and transform lives,

  122. so that we might be in a relationship with him

  123. that is secure and safe for all eternity.

  124. Know the certainty of these things.

  125. Well, how do we know

  126. that all this is not made up?

  127. How do we know

  128. that what Luke begins to write

  129. is not just Luke promoting

  130. his own biased views

  131. and kind of forcing upon

  132. some guy called Jesus

  133. all these great things?

  134. You see, there are many people

  135. who think that the Gospel of Luke

  136. is fake news.

  137. One author,

  138. his name is Dr. Bart Ehrman,

  139. has written many books

  140. making this claim.

  141. His most recent book

  142. has this subtitle.

  143. It's quite long,

  144. so listen.

  145. This is the subtitle of the book.

  146. How the earliest Christians

  147. remembered,

  148. changed,

  149. and invented

  150. the stories of the Saviour.

  151. And although he was once

  152. a firm Christian,

  153. he now makes this claim.

  154. He says that the New Testament

  155. and the Gospels in particular

  156. don't provide a trustworthy account

  157. of the historical Jesus.

  158. Instead, what we have are books

  159. that are forgeries,

  160. certain contradictions,

  161. have morally questionable teachings,

  162. and have been edited

  163. and changed through the centuries.

  164. Quite a claim.

  165. Now, you might run into Bart

  166. tomorrow when you're at work,

  167. and you might ask people in work

  168. or school,

  169. do you know him?

  170. They may never have heard of him.

  171. But you can be absolutely sure

  172. they've been influenced

  173. by his writings

  174. as it's filtered out

  175. through the media

  176. and through other publications.

  177. People say you simply

  178. can't trust the Gospels.

  179. They're forgeries,

  180. contradictions.

  181. They've been changed

  182. and edited

  183. to suit the author's

  184. particular political

  185. or moral bias.

  186. So, the question is,

  187. is Luke's Gospel fake news

  188. or true news?

  189. Can we trust it?

  190. Well, let's see

  191. what Luke has to say.

  192. First,

  193. Luke wants us to know

  194. that what he has written

  195. is an orderly account.

  196. Look at chapter 1,

  197. verse 1.

  198. Many have undertaken

  199. to draw up an account

  200. or write up an account

  201. of the things

  202. that have been fulfilled

  203. among us.

  204. End of verse 3.

  205. So, he says,

  206. it seemed good also to me

  207. to write an orderly account

  208. for you,

  209. most excellent Theophilus.

  210. In other words,

  211. this is not a random collection

  212. of sayings and stories,

  213. but a carefully compiled

  214. historical account

  215. about the person of Jesus.

  216. It's an account

  217. of the Gospel.

  218. We know that

  219. from the New Testament

  220. we have four Gospels,

  221. Matthew,

  222. Mark,

  223. Luke and John.

  224. Sometimes Matthew,

  225. Mark and Luke

  226. are put together

  227. known as the Synoptic Gospels.

  228. Now, their material

  229. is all quite similar.

  230. They're the same

  231. almost in style.

  232. John's Gospel

  233. is different.

  234. He seems to have

  235. other material.

  236. And they're like,

  237. together,

  238. they're like biographies

  239. of the life of Jesus.

  240. Now, the fact that

  241. we have four Gospels

  242. doesn't mean we have

  243. four different versions

  244. of the Gospel.

  245. And we have to try

  246. and figure out

  247. which is the right one.

  248. Now, there's only

  249. one Gospel story.

  250. There's only one account.

  251. But yet,

  252. we have different

  253. presentations

  254. of that same story.

  255. Each one

  256. has their particular emphasis.

  257. So, Mark,

  258. for example,

  259. has no account

  260. of the birth of Jesus.

  261. It's the shortest.

  262. It's like he jumps

  263. straight in,

  264. right into the action.

  265. He wants to get it all out

  266. as quick as possible.

  267. Whereas, Luke

  268. takes his time.

  269. He goes into

  270. great detail

  271. about the birth

  272. of Jesus,

  273. listing historical events

  274. so that we can know

  275. it's true.

  276. Matthew,

  277. if you were to read

  278. through that,

  279. is equally long,

  280. but seems to be written

  281. for those who

  282. are from a more

  283. religious background,

  284. while Luke's account

  285. is more suited

  286. to those who are

  287. from a non-religious

  288. background.

  289. And many claim

  290. that Theophilus

  291. was one who was

  292. from a non-religious

  293. background.

  294. John is more theological,

  295. whereas Luke is more

  296. straightforward and simple.

  297. They've all got

  298. their own particular

  299. emphasis,

  300. they've all chosen

  301. their particular material,

  302. and each one reflects

  303. each author's

  304. particular presentation.

  305. But we must be clear

  306. and understand

  307. there is only

  308. one Gospel.

  309. And like all the

  310. other Gospel authors,

  311. Luke has set about

  312. writing an orderly

  313. account about the

  314. person of Jesus.

  315. But more specifically,

  316. this orderly account

  317. that Luke has put

  318. together is not

  319. something new.

  320. It has actually been

  321. planned from

  322. eternity past.

  323. So again,

  324. look at verse 1.

  325. He says,

  326. many have undertaken

  327. to draw up an account

  328. of the things

  329. that have been

  330. fulfilled

  331. among us.

  332. So the coming

  333. of Jesus

  334. isn't an accident

  335. or a surprise,

  336. but something

  337. that has been

  338. fulfilled.

  339. It's been planned

  340. by God

  341. and purposed

  342. by God

  343. in eternity past

  344. and has now

  345. been fulfilled.

  346. have a look

  347. at what Jesus

  348. says about

  349. himself,

  350. which comes

  351. at the very

  352. end of Luke's

  353. Gospel,

  354. Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  355. Right at the

  356. very end of Luke's

  357. Gospel,

  358. Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24:44

  359. verse 44.

  360. So Jesus is

  361. speaking to

  362. his disciples.

  363. It's after

  364. his death.

  365. It's after

  366. his resurrection

  367. from the grave.

  368. And he's

  369. explaining to

  370. his disciples

  371. who have been

  372. completely confused

  373. by what has

  374. happened.

  375. And Jesus

  376. seeks to remind

  377. them what has

  378. happened.

  379. Verse 44,

  380. he said to

  381. them,

  382. this is what

  383. I told you

  384. while I was

  385. still with you.

  386. Everything,

  387. that is

  388. everything about

  389. the life of

  390. Jesus,

  391. everything must

  392. be fulfilled

  393. that is written

  394. about me in

  395. the law of

  396. Moses.

  397. The law of

  398. Moses is the

  399. first five books

  400. of the Old

  401. Testament,

  402. the prophets

  403. and the Psalms

  404. which is referring

  405. to the rest of

  406. the Old

  407. Testament.

  408. He says

  409. everything that

  410. has happened,

  411. my coming,

  412. my birth,

  413. my death,

  414. my resurrection

  415. was all

  416. written about

  417. in the past

  418. and it is

  419. now being

  420. fulfilled.

  421. Verse 45,

  422. then he opened

  423. their minds

  424. so that they

  425. could understand

  426. the scriptures

  427. and he told

  428. them,

  429. this is what

  430. is written.

  431. Read through

  432. the Old

  433. Testament scriptures

  434. and you will

  435. see that Christ

  436. will suffer

  437. and he did,

  438. he died

  439. and he will

  440. rise from

  441. the dead

  442. on the third

  443. day and

  444. he did

  445. and repentance

  446. and forgiveness

  447. of sins will

  448. be preached

  449. in his name

  450. to all nations

  451. beginning at

  452. Jerusalem.

  453. Back to

  454. chapter 1.

  455. So Luke's

  456. orderly account

  457. is not just

  458. his ideas

  459. and his

  460. experience,

  461. rather he

  462. wants us to

  463. know that

  464. this is the

  465. account of

  466. Jesus

  467. that was

  468. planned and

  469. promised by

  470. God in

  471. eternity past

  472. and has

  473. now been

  474. fulfilled

  475. with the

  476. coming of

  477. Jesus Christ.

  478. So Jesus

  479. is not just

  480. some invention,

  481. it is not

  482. just a

  483. religious bias,

  484. he is the

  485. focus and

  486. fulfillment

  487. of all

  488. history.

  489. So,

  490. Luke wants

  491. us to

  492. know that

  493. it is an

  494. orderly

  495. account.

  496. Second,

  497. Luke wants

  498. us to

  499. know that

  500. this

  501. orderly

  502. account is

  503. the result

  504. of careful

  505. investigation.

  506. Look at

  507. verse 3.

  508. Therefore,

  509. he said,

  510. since I

  511. myself have

  512. carefully

  513. investigated

  514. everything

  515. from the

  516. beginning,

  517. it seems

  518. good also

  519. for me to

  520. write an

  521. orderly

  522. account.

  523. If you

  524. were to

  525. read through

  526. Colossians,

  527. one of

  528. Paul's

  529. letters,

  530. you'd

  531. discover

  532. that we

  533. read there

  534. that Luke

  535. was a

  536. medical

  537. doctor.

  538. But he

  539. was also

  540. very skilled

  541. as a

  542. historian.

  543. He provides,

  544. you read

  545. through Luke,

  546. he provides

  547. accounts of

  548. people who

  549. were ruling

  550. and people

  551. who were in

  552. charge at

  553. certain times

  554. and certain

  555. months.

  556. And he

  557. was also,

  558. it appears,

  559. an investigative

  560. journalist.

  561. And he

  562. has,

  563. it seems,

  564. two main

  565. sources for

  566. his material

  567. as he

  568. carefully

  569. investigates

  570. everything

  571. from the

  572. beginning.

  573. First,

  574. there's what's

  575. called the

  576. oral tradition.

  577. Luke wasn't

  578. the first

  579. person to

  580. start writing

  581. an account

  582. of Jesus.

  583. Again,

  584. look at

  585. verse 1.

  586. He says,

  587. many,

  588. there were

  589. many people

  590. who have

  591. undertaken

  592. to draw

  593. up an

  594. account

  595. of these

  596. things.

  597. So circulating

  598. very soon

  599. after the

  600. life of

  601. Jesus

  602. were these

  603. written

  604. accounts of

  605. Jesus.

  606. There were

  607. many

  608. accounts.

  609. And the

  610. earliest that

  611. we know

  612. of is the

  613. Gospel of

  614. Mark,

  615. which was

  616. written about

  617. 40 years

  618. after the

  619. life of

  620. Jesus.

  621. Luke was

  622. written about

  623. 20 years

  624. later,

  625. but Mark

  626. 40 years

  627. after.

  628. This is one

  629. of the

  630. accounts of

  631. the many

  632. accounts that

  633. were written.

  634. But we have

  635. to ask the

  636. question,

  637. where did

  638. these accounts

  639. come from?

  640. Where did

  641. they get

  642. their information

  643. to start

  644. writing about

  645. Jesus?

  646. Well,

  647. look at

  648. verse 2.

  649. These

  650. accounts

  651. came just

  652. as they

  653. were handed

  654. down to

  655. us by

  656. those who

  657. from the

  658. first were

  659. eyewitnesses

  660. and servants

  661. of the

  662. word.

  663. Handed

  664. down is

  665. a technical

  666. term,

  667. and it's

  668. what scholars

  669. call the

  670. oral tradition.

  671. That is,

  672. the life and

  673. teaching of

  674. Jesus was

  675. being passed

  676. on verbally

  677. to other

  678. people.

  679. If we want

  680. information today

  681. about someone

  682. or something,

  683. we would go

  684. to a

  685. research library

  686. or we'd go

  687. to the

  688. internet.

  689. Well,

  690. in the first

  691. century,

  692. they didn't

  693. have these

  694. kinds of

  695. resources.

  696. They weren't

  697. available.

  698. Instead,

  699. information and

  700. history was

  701. preserved as

  702. it was passed

  703. on orally.

  704. Well,

  705. you say,

  706. that's all

  707. well and

  708. good,

  709. but how do

  710. we know

  711. that what

  712. people passed

  713. on orally

  714. and what

  715. Peter said

  716. to Mary

  717. and what

  718. Mary said

  719. to John

  720. and what

  721. John said,

  722. how do

  723. we know

  724. that it

  725. didn't get

  726. distorted

  727. as it

  728. got passed

  729. along?

  730. It sounds

  731. a bit like

  732. Chinese

  733. whispers to

  734. me.

  735. How do

  736. we know

  737. it's true?

  738. Well,

  739. the second

  740. of these

  741. sources were

  742. the eyewitnesses

  743. accounts.

  744. So again,

  745. look at

  746. verse 2.

  747. They were

  748. handed down

  749. to us by

  750. those who

  751. from the

  752. first were

  753. eyewitnesses

  754. and servants

  755. of the

  756. word.

  757. So what

  758. Luke has

  759. access to

  760. was handed

  761. down,

  762. was passed

  763. on orally

  764. by those

  765. who were

  766. eyewitnesses,

  767. those who

  768. were servants

  769. of the

  770. word.

  771. These

  772. eyewitnesses

  773. and servants

  774. of the

  775. word were

  776. the first

  777. apostles,

  778. the disciples.

  779. Those were

  780. the people

  781. who were

  782. with Jesus.

  783. They heard

  784. him speak.

  785. They ate

  786. with him.

  787. They saw

  788. his deeds.

  789. They experienced

  790. his resurrection

  791. and we'll

  792. get to

  793. meet some

  794. of these

  795. characters

  796. as we

  797. go through

  798. Luke.

  799. But these

  800. eyewitnesses

  801. not only

  802. handed these

  803. things down

  804. orally,

  805. but they

  806. themselves

  807. began to

  808. write down

  809. and arrange

  810. material about

  811. the life of

  812. Jesus.

  813. Let me

  814. give you

  815. two examples

  816. of these

  817. servants of

  818. the word

  819. who began

  820. to write

  821. down their

  822. eyewitness

  823. accounts.

  824. We read

  825. from one

  826. earlier.

  827. Have a look

  828. at 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1:16

  829. chapter 1

  830. verse 16.

  831. Somebody got

  832. the page

  833. for me

  834. there.

  835. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  836. chapter 1

  837. 1, 2, 2, 2.

  838. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  839. chapter 1.

  840. So Peter,

  841. the writer

  842. of this

  843. letter,

  844. was a

  845. disciple

  846. and look

  847. what he

  848. says.

  849. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1:16

  850. 1 verse

  851. 16.

  852. We did

  853. not,

  854. underline,

  855. we did

  856. not follow

  857. cleverly

  858. invented

  859. stories when

  860. we told

  861. you about

  862. the power

  863. and coming

  864. of our

  865. Lord Jesus

  866. Christ.

  867. But we

  868. were eyewitnesses

  869. of his

  870. majesty.

  871. And

  872. speaking of

  873. the,

  874. when they

  875. saw Jesus

  876. transfigured,

  877. verse 18,

  878. he said,

  879. we ourselves

  880. heard this

  881. voice that

  882. came from

  883. heaven when

  884. we were with

  885. him on the

  886. sacred mountain.

  887. Flick over a

  888. page,

  889. maybe two

  890. pages,

  891. to 1 John.

  892. here's

  893. another

  894. account

  895. of

  896. somebody

  897. who's

  898. writing a

  899. letter but

  900. wants us

  901. to know

  902. that what

  903. he's

  904. writing is

  905. true.

  906. Speaking of

  907. Jesus,

  908. he says,

  909. that which

  910. was from

  911. the beginning,

  912. that's

  913. Jesus,

  914. he says,

  915. which we

  916. have heard,

  917. which we

  918. have seen

  919. with our

  920. eyes,

  921. which we

  922. have looked

  923. at and

  924. our hands

  925. have touched.

  926. This is a

  927. living person,

  928. it's not

  929. made up.

  930. This we

  931. proclaim

  932. concerning

  933. the word

  934. of life.

  935. The life

  936. appeared,

  937. we have

  938. seen it

  939. and testified

  940. to it,

  941. and we

  942. proclaim

  943. to you

  944. the eternal

  945. life which

  946. was with

  947. the Father

  948. and has

  949. appeared

  950. to us.

  951. Go back

  952. to Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  953. chapter 1.

  954. So you

  955. see,

  956. Luke goes

  957. back to

  958. the earliest

  959. sources.

  960. These letters

  961. were written

  962. within 15

  963. to 25

  964. years of

  965. Jesus'

  966. resurrection.

  967. So Luke

  968. is going

  969. back to

  970. the earliest

  971. sources,

  972. those eyewitness

  973. servants of

  974. the word

  975. accounts.

  976. A scholar,

  977. one of the

  978. good guys,

  979. Richard

  980. Bochum,

  981. wrote a

  982. book called

  983. Jesus and

  984. the Eyewitnesses,

  985. and he

  986. says this

  987. about the

  988. writing of

  989. the Gospels.

  990. Many of

  991. the eyewitnesses

  992. to Jesus,

  993. life,

  994. death,

  995. and resurrection

  996. were still

  997. in wide

  998. active circulation

  999. during these

  1000. years,

  1001. able to

  1002. function as

  1003. trusted,

  1004. authoritative

  1005. sources and

  1006. guardians of

  1007. the tradition,

  1008. a commonly

  1009. revered

  1010. practice and

  1011. presence in

  1012. oral

  1013. societies.

  1014. So you

  1015. see, Luke

  1016. not only

  1017. consulted with

  1018. what people

  1019. wrote and

  1020. what people

  1021. had said,

  1022. but he

  1023. was able to

  1024. check it

  1025. all out with

  1026. the eyewitnesses

  1027. and servants

  1028. of the word.

  1029. So,

  1030. he wants us

  1031. to know that

  1032. this, what

  1033. he's written,

  1034. is an

  1035. orderly

  1036. account.

  1037. This

  1038. orderly

  1039. account has

  1040. come after

  1041. careful and

  1042. thorough

  1043. investigation,

  1044. and he

  1045. does all

  1046. this so

  1047. that we

  1048. can be

  1049. absolutely

  1050. certain

  1051. about the

  1052. truth of

  1053. Jesus Christ.

  1054. Let me

  1055. read verses

  1056. 3 and 4,

  1057. Luke chapter

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  1058. 1.

  1059. Therefore,

  1060. since I

  1061. myself have

  1062. carefully

  1063. investigated

  1064. everything from

  1065. the beginning,

  1066. it seemed

  1067. good also to

  1068. me to

  1069. write an

  1070. orderly

  1071. account,

  1072. most

  1073. excellent

  1074. Theophilus.

  1075. so that

  1076. you may

  1077. know the

  1078. certainty

  1079. of the

  1080. things you

  1081. have been

  1082. taught.

  1083. So,

  1084. first,

  1085. we can

  1086. know the

  1087. certainty

  1088. of Luke.

  1089. This is

  1090. true news,

  1091. not

  1092. fake news.

  1093. And this

  1094. little phrase

  1095. that we have

  1096. here in

  1097. verse 4,

  1098. that you

  1099. may know

  1100. the certainty,

  1101. has the

  1102. meaning of

  1103. security and

  1104. stability.

  1105. One writer

  1106. and speaker,

  1107. John Piper,

  1108. has pointed

  1109. out that

  1110. that same

  1111. word or

  1112. phrase is

  1113. only used

  1114. in two

  1115. other places

  1116. in the

  1117. New Testament.

  1118. And in

  1119. both cases,

  1120. it refers to

  1121. security,

  1122. something that

  1123. is locked

  1124. up,

  1125. something that

  1126. is absolutely

  1127. secure and

  1128. unchangeable.

  1129. So,

  1130. Luke is

  1131. saying that

  1132. his message,

  1133. this message

  1134. about Jesus,

  1135. the things that

  1136. you have been

  1137. heard,

  1138. the things

  1139. that you

  1140. have been

  1141. taught,

  1142. is absolutely

  1143. secure.

  1144. It is

  1145. reliable and

  1146. dependable.

  1147. It is

  1148. unshakable and

  1149. immovable.

  1150. This is

  1151. true news,

  1152. not fake

  1153. news.

  1154. It is

  1155. something that

  1156. is rock

  1157. solid,

  1158. foundational.

  1159. You can

  1160. build your

  1161. life upon

  1162. it.

  1163. You can

  1164. entrust your

  1165. life to the

  1166. very words

  1167. that are

  1168. spoken in

  1169. Luke's

  1170. gospel.

  1171. people will

  1172. tell you

  1173. that all

  1174. this stuff

  1175. about Jesus

  1176. is not

  1177. true,

  1178. that we're

  1179. all wasting

  1180. our time

  1181. reading these

  1182. gospel accounts.

  1183. You can't

  1184. believe the

  1185. Bible.

  1186. It's made

  1187. up,

  1188. it's a

  1189. forgery,

  1190. it's full

  1191. of contradictions.

  1192. But Luke

  1193. has done all

  1194. the hard work

  1195. for us so

  1196. that we can

  1197. be absolutely

  1198. certain that

  1199. what we read

  1200. about Jesus

  1201. is certain

  1202. rock

  1203. solid,

  1204. unshakable,

  1205. immovable

  1206. truth.

  1207. But

  1208. second,

  1209. this

  1210. certain

  1211. truth

  1212. is

  1213. extremely

  1214. personal.

  1215. We're not

  1216. just to

  1217. stand back

  1218. and admire

  1219. this and

  1220. say,

  1221. what a

  1222. wonderful

  1223. piece of

  1224. writing.

  1225. How clever

  1226. Luke must

  1227. have been

  1228. to have

  1229. done all

  1230. this

  1231. investigation

  1232. and checking

  1233. out with

  1234. eyewitnesses

  1235. and putting

  1236. together his

  1237. material.

  1238. What a

  1239. wonderful

  1240. author he

  1241. is.

  1242. What a

  1243. great piece

  1244. of writing.

  1245. No,

  1246. this is

  1247. personal.

  1248. We're to

  1249. act on

  1250. it and

  1251. believe it.

  1252. Look at

  1253. verse 3

  1254. again.

  1255. Therefore,

  1256. since I

  1257. myself

  1258. have

  1259. carefully

  1260. investigated

  1261. everything

  1262. from the

  1263. beginning,

  1264. it

  1265. seemed

  1266. good

  1267. also

  1268. to

  1269. me

  1270. to

  1271. write

  1272. an

  1273. orderly

  1274. account

  1275. for

  1276. you,

  1277. most

  1278. excellent

  1279. Theophilus.

  1280. It's a

  1281. wonderful name,

  1282. isn't it?

  1283. He's

  1284. written to

  1285. this person,

  1286. a guy

  1287. named

  1288. Theophilus.

  1289. It's

  1290. personal.

  1291. We don't

  1292. know much

  1293. about him

  1294. other than

  1295. the fact

  1296. that he

  1297. must have

  1298. been

  1299. somebody

  1300. of high

  1301. position

  1302. and

  1303. influence

  1304. because

  1305. nobody

  1306. gets to

  1307. be called

  1308. most

  1309. excellent

  1310. for

  1311. nothing.

  1312. He's a

  1313. mover and

  1314. shaker in

  1315. his world,

  1316. a wealthy

  1317. man.

  1318. And Luke

  1319. is saying

  1320. to Theophilus,

  1321. this gospel

  1322. that I am

  1323. writing for

  1324. you is

  1325. not only

  1326. true,

  1327. but it's

  1328. for you,

  1329. it's

  1330. personal.

  1331. We're not

  1332. just to

  1333. admire it

  1334. as a

  1335. wonderful

  1336. piece of

  1337. writing,

  1338. we're to

  1339. act on

  1340. it and

  1341. believe it.

  1342. And it's

  1343. as if we

  1344. are to

  1345. read this

  1346. as Luke

  1347. speaking to

  1348. us,

  1349. what I

  1350. am

  1351. writing

  1352. is for

  1353. you,

  1354. Johnny.

  1355. And you

  1356. insert your

  1357. own name,

  1358. this is

  1359. personal to

  1360. you,

  1361. it's

  1362. truth for

  1363. my life

  1364. and for

  1365. your life.

  1366. Let me

  1367. show you

  1368. briefly

  1369. four ways

  1370. this touches

  1371. on us

  1372. personally

  1373. and how we

  1374. can build

  1375. our life

  1376. upon this

  1377. truth.

  1378. First,

  1379. when you

  1380. are struggling

  1381. to make

  1382. sense of

  1383. life and

  1384. the foundations

  1385. on which

  1386. you build

  1387. your life

  1388. are shaken

  1389. to the

  1390. core and

  1391. people are

  1392. telling you

  1393. that all

  1394. this is all

  1395. made up and

  1396. what you

  1397. believe is a

  1398. nonsense and

  1399. you can't

  1400. trust it,

  1401. I guarantee

  1402. you need to

  1403. know that

  1404. the God

  1405. who has

  1406. existed from

  1407. all time

  1408. and who

  1409. sent his

  1410. son, the

  1411. God, man,

  1412. the Lord

  1413. Jesus Christ,

  1414. the God

  1415. who loves

  1416. you, who

  1417. came down

  1418. to seek

  1419. you and

  1420. save you

  1421. through his

  1422. incarnation and

  1423. to bring you

  1424. into an

  1425. eternal

  1426. relationship that

  1427. is safe

  1428. and secure,

  1429. it is

  1430. true.

  1431. And you

  1432. need to

  1433. know that

  1434. when you

  1435. go into

  1436. your workplace

  1437. tomorrow or

  1438. go into

  1439. school tomorrow

  1440. and people

  1441. completely

  1442. undermine it,

  1443. you need to

  1444. be sure what

  1445. you believe

  1446. and why you

  1447. believe it.

  1448. Second, when

  1449. you are weighed

  1450. down with

  1451. past failure

  1452. and you're

  1453. broken by

  1454. present shame

  1455. and you're

  1456. conscious of

  1457. sinful

  1458. behaviours,

  1459. you need to

  1460. know that

  1461. when Jesus

  1462. Christ died

  1463. on the cross,

  1464. he was

  1465. dying for

  1466. your sin,

  1467. when Luke

  1468. writes about

  1469. Jesus crying

  1470. out,

  1471. Father

  1472. forgive,

  1473. he was

  1474. taking the

  1475. judgement for

  1476. you and

  1477. he was

  1478. providing

  1479. forgiveness

  1480. for you so

  1481. that you

  1482. could be

  1483. set free

  1484. from your

  1485. guilt.

  1486. You need

  1487. to know

  1488. that when

  1489. you are

  1490. weighed down

  1491. with your

  1492. past failures

  1493. that this

  1494. gospel of

  1495. freedom is

  1496. absolutely

  1497. certain.

  1498. Third,

  1499. when you

  1500. are walking

  1501. through

  1502. suffering

  1503. and when

  1504. you are

  1505. facing the

  1506. dark reality

  1507. of death

  1508. itself

  1509. and the

  1510. grave only

  1511. awaits,

  1512. you need

  1513. to know

  1514. that the

  1515. resurrection

  1516. of Jesus

  1517. Christ,

  1518. defeating

  1519. death and

  1520. destroying the

  1521. grave and

  1522. when Luke

  1523. records his

  1524. account that

  1525. Christ rose

  1526. from the

  1527. grave and

  1528. appeared bodily

  1529. to his

  1530. disciples,

  1531. you need to

  1532. know that he

  1533. destroyed the

  1534. grave and

  1535. was securing

  1536. salvation for

  1537. you and

  1538. this is a

  1539. rock solid

  1540. dependable

  1541. truth for

  1542. your life

  1543. when you

  1544. are suffering

  1545. and facing

  1546. certain

  1547. death.

  1548. death.

  1549. And

  1550. fourth,

  1551. as we

  1552. look out

  1553. into our

  1554. broken

  1555. world,

  1556. we see

  1557. power hungry

  1558. leaders,

  1559. threatening

  1560. nations,

  1561. devastating

  1562. floods,

  1563. terrorists

  1564. blowing up

  1565. at will.

  1566. We need

  1567. to know

  1568. that when

  1569. Luke tells

  1570. us that

  1571. the risen

  1572. Lord Jesus

  1573. ascended to

  1574. be at the

  1575. Father's

  1576. right hand,

  1577. is now

  1578. ruling with

  1579. all power,

  1580. with all

  1581. authority,

  1582. and is one

  1583. day going to

  1584. come back

  1585. again and

  1586. make all

  1587. things new

  1588. and put this

  1589. broken world

  1590. back together

  1591. again,

  1592. is an

  1593. unshakable

  1594. and immovable

  1595. reality for

  1596. your life.

  1597. The

  1598. incarnation,

  1599. the

  1600. crucifixion,

  1601. the

  1602. resurrection,

  1603. the

  1604. ascension

  1605. that Luke

  1606. will tell

  1607. us all

  1608. about,

  1609. is true.

  1610. And he

  1611. says,

  1612. I have

  1613. written

  1614. this

  1615. gospel

  1616. that you

  1617. and that

  1618. you

  1619. and that

  1620. you

  1621. and that

  1622. I

  1623. may know

  1624. the

  1625. certainty

  1626. of the

  1627. things that

  1628. we have

  1629. been taught.

  1630. This,

  1631. this

  1632. gospel

  1633. is the

  1634. foundation

  1635. for our

  1636. life.

  1637. This is

  1638. what we

  1639. rest in

  1640. and this

  1641. is what

  1642. we

  1643. believe.

  1644. Do you

  1645. trust your

  1646. life

  1647. with the

  1648. words of

  1649. Luke

  1650. about the

  1651. person of

  1652. Jesus Christ?

  1653. Christ?

  1654. I hope

  1655. you do.

  1656. Let's

  1657. pray.

  1658. Let's

  1659. pray.
