  1. Luke chapter 2, page 1027.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  2. In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire

  3. Roman world.

  4. This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria, and

  5. everyone went to his own town to register.

  6. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town

  7. of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

  8. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting

  9. a child.

  10. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her

  11. first son, a son.

  12. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there was no room for them

  13. in the inn.

  14. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks

  15. at night.

  16. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and

  17. they were terrified.

  18. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid.

  19. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  20. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you.

  21. He is Christ the Lord.

  22. This will be a sign to you.

  23. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

  24. Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God

  25. and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.

  26. When the angels had left them and had gone into heaven, the shepherds said to them, one

  27. another, Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told

  28. us about.

  29. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby who was lying in the manger.

  30. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told to them about

  31. this child.

  32. And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

  33. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

  34. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had seen and heard,

  35. which were just as they had been told.

  36. On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel

  37. had given him before he had been conceived.

  38. When the time of their purification, according to the law of Moses, had been completed, Joseph

  39. and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

  40. As it is written in the law of the Lord, every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the

  41. Lord and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the law of the Lord.

  42. A pair of doves or two young pigeons.

  43. Now, there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon who was righteous and devout.

  44. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  45. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the

  46. Lord's Christ.

  47. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.

  48. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the law required,

  49. Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,

  50. you now dismiss your servant in peace.

  51. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people,

  52. a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.

  53. The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.

  54. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, This child is destined to cause the

  55. falling and rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that

  56. the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own souls too.

  57. There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher.

  58. She was very old. She had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage and then was a

  59. widow until she was 84. She never left the temple but worshipped night and day, fasting and praying.

  60. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke of a child to all who

  61. were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. When Joseph and Mary had done everything required

  62. by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, their own town of Nazareth, and the child grew and

  63. became strong. He was filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him.

  64. Thanks very much, Trevor. Long reading, big passage, but we're going to work through it together

  65. with God's help. So keep your Bibles open. We'll pray and ask for God's help.

  66. Father, just as your Holy Spirit taught and revealed to old man Simeon, all that you are going to do,

  67. we pray that your same Holy Spirit would reveal your truth to us so that we grasp afresh who Jesus is

  68. and what his coming means for us today. So we ask for your help as we look at your word together. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  69. Well, it's considered to be one of the best underground cave systems in Europe.

  70. The entrance, about 25 metres below the surface, takes you on this long, winding path.

  71. And at the end of it, you come to one of the world's largest underground lakes.

  72. The brochure said it all. Immerse yourself in the subterranean world.

  73. Enjoy the rock formations formed over hundreds and thousands of years.

  74. See the turquoise baths of Diana and take a trip over the underground lake.

  75. So while on holidays, we went to visit Caves del Drac.

  76. And what a surprise.

  77. Apart from getting lost on the way, never trust the sat-nav,

  78. we decided to stay at the back of the tour and take our time.

  79. But as soon as the group who were at the front of the tour went through that section of the cave,

  80. they turned off the lights.

  81. So us at the back spent our time just looking at shadows.

  82. And to make matters worse, we had to queue up for about 45 minutes

  83. to get on this little rowing boat that would take you across the world's largest underwater lake,

  84. which took no more than two minutes.

  85. It was a surprise, all right.

  86. It was not as we expected.

  87. Well, as we enter into Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  88. it is full of surprises.

  89. But it's not as we expect.

  90. In fact, it could leave us really disappointed.

  91. First, there is a surprising king.

  92. Look at verse 1.

  93. In those days, Caesar Augustus,

  94. you may have heard of him from history,

  95. he was a very powerful man,

  96. ruler over the entire empire of Europe,

  97. of the Roman Empire, for 44 years.

  98. An empire that stretched across North Africa,

  99. right into most of Europe,

  100. and covering modern Turkey and beyond.

  101. He was a ruthless leader.

  102. If you like, the power of Trump,

  103. the might of Putin,

  104. and the craziness of Kim Jong-un

  105. all rolled into one.

  106. And of course, as his empire expanded,

  107. he needed more finances.

  108. So, again, verse 1,

  109. he issued a decree

  110. that a census should be taken

  111. of the entire Roman world.

  112. A census was much more than just counting

  113. the population of the empire.

  114. It was a means of collecting taxes

  115. and making money.

  116. The lands and people that he had conquered

  117. had now become the means

  118. for funding his wars.

  119. He was a powerful tyrant

  120. who took no pity.

  121. And everyone who lived in the empire

  122. was forced to travel

  123. to their place of birth

  124. and register

  125. so he could squeeze

  126. as much money as possible.

  127. So, verse 4,

  128. Joseph also went up

  129. from the town of Nazareth

  130. in Galilee to Judea

  131. to Bethlehem,

  132. the town of David,

  133. because he belonged

  134. to the house and line of David.

  135. He went there to register

  136. with Mary,

  137. who was pledged

  138. to be married to him

  139. and was expecting a child.

  140. Even young pregnant women

  141. like Mary,

  142. who were on the verge

  143. of giving birth,

  144. were not exempt.

  145. Everyone had to travel.

  146. So there was no doubt

  147. if you lived within

  148. the Roman Empire,

  149. who was ruler?

  150. Who was boss?

  151. But let's remember

  152. what the angel had said

  153. about the coming of Jesus.

  154. Look back to chapter 1,

  155. verse 32.

  156. Here's what it says

  157. about Jesus,

  158. God's promised king.

  159. He will be great

  160. and will be called

  161. the Son of the Most High,

  162. a title reserved

  163. for God alone,

  164. but now applied to Jesus.

  165. The Lord God

  166. will give him

  167. the throne

  168. of his father David

  169. and he will reign

  170. over the house

  171. of Jacob forever.

  172. His kingdom

  173. will never end.

  174. So as we read

  175. through Luke,

  176. we see at least

  177. at last a challenger

  178. to the ruthless might

  179. and power of Caesar.

  180. God is raising up a king.

  181. But what a surprise.

  182. it's not what we expect.

  183. Look back at chapter 2,

  184. verse 6.

  185. While they were there

  186. registering,

  187. the time came

  188. for the baby to be born

  189. and she gave birth

  190. to her firstborn,

  191. a son.

  192. She wrapped him in cloths

  193. and placed him in a manger

  194. because there was no room

  195. for them in the inn.

  196. Now it makes us stop

  197. and ask,

  198. what is going on?

  199. God's promise,

  200. this great,

  201. the Son of the Most High,

  202. the King of an eternal kingdom,

  203. God who has come

  204. in human form,

  205. ends up,

  206. verse 6

  207. or verse 7,

  208. in a manger,

  209. a feeding trough

  210. for animals

  211. in a backward town

  212. called Bethlehem.

  213. This so-called

  214. promised king

  215. can't even find

  216. anywhere to stay.

  217. Hardly a threat

  218. to the power

  219. and might

  220. of Caesar.

  221. Mike McKinley,

  222. who's wrote

  223. a little helpful book

  224. covering big themes

  225. of Luke,

  226. shows us

  227. how these opening

  228. verses

  229. take us

  230. on a downward

  231. spiral

  232. of power

  233. and influence.

  234. So again,

  235. look at verse 1,

  236. we've got

  237. Caesar Augustus,

  238. ruler

  239. of the Roman Empire.

  240. Verse 2,

  241. Quinerius,

  242. a local governor

  243. with some power.

  244. Verse 4,

  245. we're introduced

  246. to Joseph,

  247. a poor

  248. commoner.

  249. Verse 5,

  250. Mary,

  251. a young,

  252. unknown,

  253. teenage,

  254. pregnant girl.

  255. And then

  256. verse 7,

  257. a baby,

  258. seconds old

  259. and gasping

  260. for air.

  261. From the great

  262. and the mighty

  263. to the weak

  264. and the powerless.

  265. From the most

  266. powerful man

  267. in the world

  268. to the most

  269. fragile and

  270. insignificant.

  271. The conquering king

  272. to a crying

  273. newborn.

  274. This struggling

  275. scrap

  276. still bloodied

  277. from the womb

  278. is God's king.

  279. Hardly inspiring

  280. or hopeful.

  281. What's going on?

  282. Well,

  283. God's king

  284. does come,

  285. but he comes

  286. in weakness,

  287. not power.

  288. In fact,

  289. the whole of

  290. Jesus' life

  291. would be marked

  292. by weakness.

  293. a servant

  294. who would come

  295. to give

  296. his life.

  297. Who would end

  298. up,

  299. as we get

  300. to the end

  301. of Luke,

  302. slaughtered

  303. on a cross.

  304. Who on

  305. this earth

  306. would want

  307. to follow

  308. and trust

  309. a king

  310. like that?

  311. But that's

  312. the point.

  313. God is

  314. calling

  315. for

  316. faith.

  317. Will you

  318. trust in

  319. the power

  320. of men

  321. or will

  322. you trust

  323. in the

  324. weakness

  325. of my

  326. son?

  327. Will you

  328. follow the

  329. kings and

  330. rulers of

  331. this world,

  332. the might

  333. of all

  334. the powerful

  335. corporations

  336. who flex

  337. their muscles

  338. or will you

  339. follow my

  340. king

  341. who died

  342. for you

  343. on the

  344. cross?

  345. Maybe

  346. you're

  347. disappointed

  348. that Jesus

  349. is not

  350. something

  351. more.

  352. Well,

  353. listen to

  354. the

  355. apostle

  356. Paul.

  357. He

  358. explains it

  359. for us

  360. like this.

  361. He says

  362. the message

  363. of the

  364. cross

  365. is

  366. foolishness.

  367. It's

  368. weak.

  369. It's

  370. nothing

  371. to those

  372. who are

  373. perishing.

  374. But to

  375. us who

  376. are being

  377. saved,

  378. it is

  379. the power

  380. of God.

  381. For the

  382. foolishness

  383. of God

  384. is wiser

  385. than man's

  386. wisdom.

  387. And the

  388. weakness of

  389. God is

  390. stronger

  391. than man's

  392. strength.

  393. Who do

  394. you trust?

  395. Who would

  396. you put your

  397. life into

  398. the hands

  399. of?

  400. Well, we've

  401. got a second

  402. surprise,

  403. a surprising

  404. invitation.

  405. for some

  406. reason,

  407. when

  408. celebrities

  409. get pregnant

  410. or give

  411. birth,

  412. they see

  413. it their

  414. duty to

  415. inform the

  416. whole world.

  417. I'm not

  418. quite sure

  419. why, but

  420. that's a

  421. celebrity for

  422. you, I

  423. guess.

  424. Whether you're

  425. Serena Williams

  426. or William

  427. and Kate,

  428. well, people

  429. must know

  430. that we're

  431. having a

  432. baby.

  433. Well, Luke

  434. has another

  435. surprise for

  436. us.

  437. Look at

  438. verse 8.

  439. And there

  440. were shepherds

  441. living out in

  442. the fields

  443. nearby, keeping

  444. watch over

  445. their flocks at

  446. night.

  447. Now, we've

  448. all heard that,

  449. we've sung the

  450. carols, but I

  451. want us to

  452. forget the

  453. image in your

  454. minds of

  455. those nice,

  456. fluffy,

  457. cuddly

  458. shepherds that

  459. might be

  460. pictured on

  461. your Christmas

  462. cards.

  463. Shepherds are

  464. the lowest of

  465. the low.

  466. It was a

  467. thankless,

  468. dirty,

  469. filthy job,

  470. as verse 1

  471. tells us.

  472. They lived

  473. out in

  474. the fields.

  475. And for

  476. good reason

  477. too.

  478. They were

  479. considered to

  480. be thieves

  481. and robbers

  482. attacking

  483. unsuspecting

  484. travellers at

  485. night.

  486. If there was

  487. a robbery

  488. in town,

  489. well, it

  490. was the

  491. shepherds.

  492. They were

  493. so despised

  494. that their

  495. testimony was

  496. not even

  497. trusted in

  498. a court of

  499. law.

  500. You couldn't

  501. believe them.

  502. But yet,

  503. it's to

  504. these low

  505. life that

  506. God first

  507. announces the

  508. coming of

  509. his king.

  510. Look at

  511. verse 9.

  512. An angel

  513. of the

  514. Lord appeared

  515. to them,

  516. and the

  517. glory of

  518. the Lord

  519. shone around

  520. them, and

  521. they were

  522. terrified.

  523. Well, who

  524. wouldn't be

  525. if an

  526. angel appeared

  527. in the

  528. sky?

  529. But the

  530. angel said

  531. to them,

  532. do not

  533. be afraid.

  534. I bring

  535. you good

  536. news of

  537. great joy

  538. that will

  539. be for

  540. all the

  541. people.

  542. Today,

  543. in the

  544. town of

  545. David,

  546. a saviour

  547. has been

  548. born to

  549. you.

  550. He is

  551. Christ

  552. the

  553. Lord.

  554. This

  555. announcement

  556. is deeply

  557. personal.

  558. Did you

  559. get that

  560. in verse

  561. 11?

  562. Today,

  563. in the

  564. town of

  565. David,

  566. a saviour

  567. has been

  568. born to

  569. you,

  570. to you

  571. shepherds.

  572. Yes,

  573. the world

  574. will hear

  575. about it

  576. in time,

  577. but it

  578. starts

  579. personally

  580. with you.

  581. God

  582. doesn't

  583. send out

  584. a tweet

  585. with the

  586. hashtag

  587. kingisborn,

  588. or there's

  589. no announcement

  590. in Jerusalem

  591. news on

  592. the papers,

  593. there's no

  594. press briefing

  595. inviting all

  596. the political

  597. and religious

  598. elite.

  599. Instead,

  600. it's a

  601. personal

  602. visit on

  603. a secluded

  604. hillside to

  605. a bunch of

  606. dirty low-life

  607. shepherds who

  608. no one would

  609. ever believe.

  610. In

  611. modern terms,

  612. dare I

  613. say it,

  614. it's like

  615. God going

  616. to the

  617. traveller

  618. site,

  619. inviting the

  620. so-called

  621. despised of

  622. our society.

  623. Well,

  624. surely God

  625. can do

  626. better than

  627. that,

  628. couldn't he?

  629. What's

  630. going on?

  631. Well,

  632. it's telling

  633. us that

  634. God is a

  635. God of

  636. grace.

  637. God

  638. is a

  639. God's

  640. favour.

  641. Verse 13,

  642. suddenly a

  643. great company

  644. of the

  645. heavenly

  646. hosts

  647. appeared

  648. with the

  649. angel,

  650. praising God

  651. and saying,

  652. glory to

  653. God in the

  654. highest,

  655. on an

  656. earth,

  657. peace to

  658. men,

  659. on whom

  660. his favour,

  661. literally

  662. upon whom

  663. his grace

  664. has fallen.

  665. God

  666. invites

  667. these

  668. low-life

  669. shepherds

  670. to come

  671. and see

  672. this

  673. newborn

  674. king

  675. because,

  676. well,

  677. it's because

  678. it's God's

  679. good pleasure

  680. to do so,

  681. because God

  682. delights in

  683. showing his

  684. grace to

  685. unsuspecting

  686. people.

  687. This is the

  688. way God

  689. works.

  690. It was the

  691. same for

  692. Elizabeth,

  693. remember,

  694. back in

  695. chapter 1

  696. verse 25,

  697. old

  698. barren

  699. Elizabeth,

  700. verse 25,

  701. the Lord

  702. has done

  703. this for

  704. me,

  705. she said,

  706. in these

  707. days he

  708. has shown

  709. his favour

  710. or he

  711. has shown

  712. his grace

  713. upon me

  714. and taken

  715. away my

  716. disgrace.

  717. Or look

  718. at verse

  719. 30,

  720. as the

  721. angel announced

  722. the good

  723. news to

  724. Mary,

  725. but the

  726. angel said

  727. to her,

  728. do not

  729. be afraid

  730. Mary,

  731. you have

  732. found favour

  733. with God.

  734. Literally,

  735. God's

  736. grace has

  737. come upon

  738. you.

  739. These two

  740. unsuspecting

  741. women,

  742. these

  743. unsuspecting

  744. shepherds,

  745. God's grace

  746. is not

  747. earned or

  748. deserved,

  749. it's dispensed

  750. at God's

  751. good pleasure

  752. and will

  753. because,

  754. well,

  755. God just

  756. delights

  757. in giving

  758. his grace.

  759. look again

  760. at what

  761. the angels

  762. say to

  763. the

  764. shepherds,

  765. verse 10,

  766. chapter 2,

  767. the angel

  768. said,

  769. don't be

  770. afraid,

  771. I bring

  772. you good

  773. news of

  774. great joy.

  775. That will

  776. be for all

  777. the people

  778. today in

  779. the town

  780. of David,

  781. a saviour

  782. has been

  783. born to

  784. you,

  785. he is

  786. Christ

  787. the

  788. Lord.

  789. Christ

  790. is a

  791. title.

  792. Sometimes

  793. we read

  794. the word

  795. Messiah.

  796. It means

  797. God's

  798. chosen

  799. anointed

  800. king,

  801. ruler,

  802. supreme

  803. power.

  804. And God

  805. is saying

  806. to these

  807. shepherds,

  808. come,

  809. here is an

  810. invitation for

  811. you to

  812. go and

  813. see my

  814. saving

  815. king,

  816. my ruler,

  817. and it's

  818. a personal

  819. invitation to

  820. you.

  821. Who would

  822. choose

  823. shepherds

  824. to be

  825. the first

  826. hearers of

  827. such

  828. momentous,

  829. life

  830. transforming,

  831. world

  832. changing

  833. news?

  834. Well,

  835. God

  836. would,

  837. because

  838. God is

  839. a God

  840. of grace.

  841. Why would

  842. he do

  843. it?

  844. What's

  845. going on?

  846. Well,

  847. as we

  848. read through

  849. Luke's

  850. gospel,

  851. we will

  852. discover that

  853. there are

  854. two kinds

  855. of people.

  856. Of all

  857. the people

  858. we meet,

  859. they will

  860. be in

  861. two

  862. categories.

  863. There are

  864. those who

  865. are the

  866. outsiders,

  867. those who

  868. are morally

  869. broken,

  870. spiritually

  871. unclean,

  872. people who

  873. are on

  874. the edges,

  875. people like

  876. the

  877. shepherds.

  878. And then

  879. we'll meet

  880. the others,

  881. the insiders,

  882. those who

  883. see themselves

  884. as morally

  885. good and

  886. spiritually

  887. pure,

  888. people who

  889. have

  890. influence

  891. and

  892. power,

  893. people like

  894. the

  895. political

  896. and

  897. religious

  898. elite,

  899. like the

  900. Pharisees

  901. that we'll

  902. come across.

  903. But Luke's

  904. big surprise

  905. as we read

  906. through it

  907. is that,

  908. well,

  909. from God's

  910. perspective,

  911. the outsiders

  912. are invited

  913. in,

  914. while the

  915. insiders

  916. are left

  917. out.

  918. You see,

  919. God has

  920. sent his

  921. chosen

  922. saving

  923. king,

  924. Jesus

  925. to

  926. invite

  927. sinners,

  928. the morally

  929. broken.

  930. He came

  931. to seek

  932. and save

  933. the lost,

  934. the spiritually

  935. unclean,

  936. those who

  937. know that

  938. they can't

  939. save themselves,

  940. the despised

  941. and the

  942. rejected.

  943. God goes

  944. to

  945. shepherds

  946. and he

  947. shows them

  948. grace.

  949. Disappointed

  950. that God

  951. doesn't treat

  952. you differently?

  953. that you

  954. look at

  955. your good

  956. life and

  957. think,

  958. well,

  959. what a

  960. good

  961. person

  962. I am

  963. and,

  964. well,

  965. God is

  966. in some

  967. ways bound

  968. to treat

  969. me differently.

  970. Not the

  971. case.

  972. You see,

  973. until we

  974. too,

  975. each one

  976. of us,

  977. become like

  978. the shepherds,

  979. until we

  980. stoop to

  981. such humility

  982. and see

  983. ourselves as

  984. being morally

  985. broken,

  986. with nothing

  987. to offer.

  988. We will

  989. never,

  990. ever come

  991. to know

  992. and experience

  993. God's grace.

  994. If I see

  995. myself as an

  996. insider,

  997. one of the

  998. good people,

  999. I ain't

  1000. going to

  1001. know God's

  1002. grace.

  1003. I must

  1004. become like

  1005. a shepherd

  1006. to experience

  1007. his grace

  1008. in my life

  1009. each and

  1010. every day.

  1011. surprised by

  1012. the saviour

  1013. that we

  1014. meet?

  1015. Well,

  1016. here's a

  1017. third surprise.

  1018. A

  1019. surprising

  1020. salvation.

  1021. Remember

  1022. how Luke

  1023. started out

  1024. in chapter

  1025. two?

  1026. In the

  1027. days of

  1028. Caesar

  1029. Augustus,

  1030. the great

  1031. ruler over

  1032. the entire

  1033. empire,

  1034. Israel,

  1035. this small

  1036. little land,

  1037. this small

  1038. little nation,

  1039. are under

  1040. the might

  1041. and power

  1042. of a

  1043. foreign

  1044. oppressor.

  1045. But let's

  1046. also remember

  1047. what the

  1048. prophets

  1049. had promised

  1050. all these

  1051. hundreds of

  1052. years ago.

  1053. Keep your

  1054. finger in Luke

  1055. and go back

  1056. to Isaiah

  1057. 52.

  1058. Isaiah

  1059. 52.

  1060. 52.

  1061. So we've

  1062. got to

  1063. keep

  1064. context

  1065. in mind

  1066. here.

  1067. Luke

  1068. wants us

  1069. to know

  1070. Caesar

  1071. Augustus,

  1072. the empire,

  1073. the ruler,

  1074. he's the

  1075. suppressor,

  1076. he's in

  1077. charge.

  1078. But with

  1079. that in

  1080. mind,

  1081. we've got

  1082. to remember

  1083. the promise

  1084. of the

  1085. prophets.

  1086. And the

  1087. context in

  1088. Isaiah 52,

  1089. if you

  1090. look at

  1091. verse 4,

  1092. God's

  1093. people have

  1094. been oppressed

  1095. by other

  1096. nations.

  1097. So verse 4,

  1098. for this is

  1099. what the

  1100. sovereign Lord

  1101. says,

  1102. at first my

  1103. people went

  1104. down to

  1105. Egypt to

  1106. live.

  1107. Do you

  1108. remember how

  1109. they were

  1110. oppressed

  1111. by the

  1112. Egyptians

  1113. in slavery?

  1114. And then he

  1115. says,

  1116. lately,

  1117. Assyria,

  1118. this other

  1119. great nation,

  1120. has come

  1121. in and

  1122. has oppressed

  1123. them.

  1124. And we

  1125. know too

  1126. that the

  1127. Babylonian

  1128. nation,

  1129. they oppressed

  1130. also.

  1131. But there

  1132. is a

  1133. promise of

  1134. comfort and

  1135. redemption to

  1136. come.

  1137. So look at

  1138. verse 9.

  1139. Burst into

  1140. songs of

  1141. joy together,

  1142. you ruins of

  1143. Jerusalem,

  1144. for the Lord

  1145. has comforted

  1146. his people,

  1147. he has

  1148. redeemed

  1149. Jerusalem.

  1150. The Lord

  1151. will lay

  1152. bare his

  1153. holy arm

  1154. in the

  1155. sight of

  1156. all the

  1157. nations,

  1158. and all

  1159. the ends

  1160. of the

  1161. earth will

  1162. see the

  1163. salvation

  1164. of our

  1165. God.

  1166. There's a

  1167. promise that

  1168. well,

  1169. a redeemer

  1170. is going

  1171. to come

  1172. who's going

  1173. to bring

  1174. comfort to

  1175. God's

  1176. people.

  1177. When is

  1178. it going

  1179. to happen?

  1180. Well,

  1181. let's go

  1182. back to

  1183. Luke chapter

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  1184. 2.

  1185. and verse

  1186. 25.

  1187. Because at

  1188. this stage,

  1189. while yes,

  1190. they're living

  1191. in their

  1192. own land,

  1193. they're still

  1194. under the

  1195. oppression of

  1196. now another

  1197. nation,

  1198. the Roman

  1199. Empire.

  1200. And here

  1201. we're introduced

  1202. to an old

  1203. man called

  1204. Simeon,

  1205. verse 25.

  1206. Now there

  1207. was a man

  1208. in Jerusalem

  1209. called Simeon

  1210. who was

  1211. righteous

  1212. and devout.

  1213. He was

  1214. waiting,

  1215. literally his

  1216. whole life,

  1217. longing for

  1218. the consolation

  1219. or the

  1220. comfort of

  1221. Israel.

  1222. And the

  1223. Holy Spirit

  1224. was upon

  1225. him.

  1226. And when

  1227. he sees

  1228. this promised

  1229. Saviour,

  1230. because,

  1231. verse 26,

  1232. it had been

  1233. revealed to

  1234. him by the

  1235. Holy Spirit

  1236. that he

  1237. would not

  1238. die before

  1239. he had seen

  1240. the Lord's

  1241. Christ,

  1242. Christ.

  1243. Look what

  1244. happens,

  1245. verse 28.

  1246. Simeon took

  1247. this child

  1248. in his arms

  1249. and praised

  1250. God,

  1251. saying,

  1252. Sovereign

  1253. Lord,

  1254. as you

  1255. have promised,

  1256. promised all

  1257. the way back

  1258. as we'd

  1259. read in

  1260. Isaiah,

  1261. you now

  1262. dismiss your

  1263. servant in

  1264. peace,

  1265. for my

  1266. eyes have

  1267. seen your

  1268. salvation.

  1269. At last,

  1270. after all

  1271. of these

  1272. years,

  1273. God's

  1274. salvation

  1275. has come

  1276. in the

  1277. person of

  1278. Jesus.

  1279. Jesus,

  1280. but Simeon

  1281. was not

  1282. the only

  1283. one waiting.

  1284. Look down

  1285. at verse 36.

  1286. There was

  1287. also the

  1288. prophetess,

  1289. Anna,

  1290. the daughter

  1291. of Phanuel

  1292. of the

  1293. tribe of

  1294. Asher.

  1295. And she

  1296. meets this

  1297. baby Jesus

  1298. in the

  1299. temple,

  1300. verse 38,

  1301. coming up

  1302. to them,

  1303. coming up

  1304. to the

  1305. parents at

  1306. that very

  1307. moment,

  1308. she gave

  1309. thanks to

  1310. God and

  1311. spoke about

  1312. the child

  1313. Jesus to

  1314. all who

  1315. are looking

  1316. forward,

  1317. or literally

  1318. all who

  1319. are waiting

  1320. and longing

  1321. for the

  1322. redemption

  1323. of Jerusalem.

  1324. At last,

  1325. it seems

  1326. that God's

  1327. promises of

  1328. the past

  1329. have now

  1330. been fulfilled.

  1331. God has

  1332. come in

  1333. the person

  1334. of Jesus

  1335. Christ to

  1336. redeem his

  1337. people from

  1338. the might

  1339. and the

  1340. oppression

  1341. of the

  1342. Roman Empire.

  1343. A mighty

  1344. king who

  1345. would rule

  1346. forever and

  1347. make everything

  1348. right.

  1349. But

  1350. surprise,

  1351. it's not

  1352. as we

  1353. expect.

  1354. Listen to

  1355. what Simeon

  1356. says about

  1357. this

  1358. Redeemer.

  1359. Verse 34,

  1360. Then

  1361. Simeon

  1362. blessed

  1363. them,

  1364. that's the

  1365. parents,

  1366. and said

  1367. to Mary

  1368. his mother,

  1369. This

  1370. child is

  1371. destined to

  1372. cause the

  1373. falling and

  1374. rising of

  1375. many and

  1376. Israel,

  1377. and to

  1378. be a sign

  1379. that will

  1380. be spoken

  1381. against.

  1382. In other

  1383. words,

  1384. people are

  1385. going to

  1386. oppose him

  1387. so that

  1388. the thoughts

  1389. of many

  1390. hearts

  1391. will be

  1392. revealed.

  1393. will

  1394. be

  1395. filled.

  1396. It's not

  1397. what we

  1398. expect.

  1399. Surely

  1400. messiahs,

  1401. these kings

  1402. are meant

  1403. to unite

  1404. people

  1405. together

  1406. and build

  1407. an army

  1408. and be

  1409. powerful

  1410. and mighty,

  1411. but God's

  1412. king, it

  1413. seems, is

  1414. going to

  1415. do the

  1416. exact

  1417. opposite.

  1418. When he

  1419. arrives,

  1420. well, he's

  1421. going to

  1422. cause

  1423. division

  1424. amongst

  1425. the

  1426. people.

  1427. Depending

  1428. on how

  1429. people relate

  1430. to Jesus,

  1431. some will

  1432. fall,

  1433. some will

  1434. rise.

  1435. it seems

  1436. more like

  1437. there's

  1438. going to

  1439. be civil

  1440. war.

  1441. And if

  1442. that's not

  1443. bad enough,

  1444. listen to

  1445. what he

  1446. says to

  1447. Mary.

  1448. Look at

  1449. the very

  1450. end of

  1451. verse 35.

  1452. And a

  1453. sword will

  1454. pierce

  1455. your own

  1456. soul too.

  1457. The end

  1458. of all of

  1459. this is

  1460. going to

  1461. be very,

  1462. very painful.

  1463. Whatever

  1464. the sword

  1465. is,

  1466. and I

  1467. think it's

  1468. referring to

  1469. the crucifixion

  1470. of Jesus,

  1471. there's

  1472. going to

  1473. be a

  1474. lot of

  1475. suffering

  1476. for Jesus

  1477. come the

  1478. end of

  1479. his life

  1480. on earth.

  1481. And for

  1482. Mary,

  1483. his mother,

  1484. as she

  1485. stands at

  1486. the cross

  1487. and sees

  1488. her own

  1489. son crucified,

  1490. a bloody

  1491. mess on

  1492. the cross,

  1493. well,

  1494. a sword

  1495. will pierce

  1496. your own

  1497. soul too.

  1498. Your heart,

  1499. you are

  1500. going to

  1501. be broken.

  1502. So

  1503. Jesus,

  1504. rather than

  1505. being

  1506. remembered

  1507. as the

  1508. great

  1509. liberator,

  1510. is going

  1511. to be

  1512. remembered

  1513. as the

  1514. great

  1515. divider.

  1516. What's

  1517. going on?

  1518. Where's

  1519. the salvation

  1520. in that?

  1521. You see,

  1522. so often

  1523. we think

  1524. of Jesus

  1525. in terms

  1526. of our

  1527. own

  1528. little

  1529. immediate

  1530. lives

  1531. and the

  1532. situations

  1533. around us.

  1534. We think

  1535. Jesus,

  1536. the saviour,

  1537. yeah,

  1538. I like

  1539. that,

  1540. he's

  1541. come to

  1542. fix my

  1543. life,

  1544. change my

  1545. circumstances,

  1546. make my

  1547. life more

  1548. prosperous and

  1549. successful.

  1550. It's all

  1551. about Jesus

  1552. dealing with

  1553. my particular

  1554. social needs.

  1555. I've got a

  1556. problem,

  1557. call on Jesus

  1558. and he'll

  1559. fix it.

  1560. He's the

  1561. saviour,

  1562. a saviour to

  1563. make my

  1564. life better.

  1565. But that's

  1566. not what's

  1567. happening here.

  1568. look at

  1569. these two

  1570. characters

  1571. again that

  1572. we have

  1573. in chapter

  1574. two,

  1575. Simeon

  1576. and Anna.

  1577. Simeon,

  1578. we know,

  1579. well,

  1580. he's an

  1581. old guy

  1582. at this

  1583. stage,

  1584. he's on

  1585. his way

  1586. out.

  1587. Verse 26,

  1588. it had been

  1589. revealed to

  1590. him by the

  1591. Holy Spirit

  1592. that he

  1593. would not

  1594. die before

  1595. he had

  1596. seen the

  1597. Lord's

  1598. Christ.

  1599. He was

  1600. old and

  1601. ready to

  1602. die and

  1603. he was

  1604. just

  1605. waiting.

  1606. Anna,

  1607. we know,

  1608. is very

  1609. old.

  1610. Verse 36,

  1611. it tells

  1612. us that

  1613. she was

  1614. very old

  1615. and she

  1616. had lived

  1617. with her

  1618. husband seven

  1619. years after

  1620. her marriage

  1621. and was a

  1622. widow until

  1623. she was

  1624. 84.

  1625. But as

  1626. she was

  1627. waiting,

  1628. look at the

  1629. rest of

  1630. verse 37,

  1631. she never

  1632. left the

  1633. temple but

  1634. worshipped

  1635. night and

  1636. day,

  1637. fasting and

  1638. praying.

  1639. For Simeon

  1640. and Anna,

  1641. their whole

  1642. life has

  1643. been waiting,

  1644. has been

  1645. focused on

  1646. Jesus,

  1647. longing and

  1648. waiting.

  1649. You see,

  1650. for them,

  1651. salvation was

  1652. not material

  1653. and social,

  1654. it was

  1655. personal and

  1656. relational.

  1657. They longed

  1658. for Jesus.

  1659. They wanted

  1660. Jesus to

  1661. come.

  1662. Jesus was

  1663. sufficient.

  1664. Jesus was

  1665. enough.

  1666. Again,

  1667. look at how

  1668. these two

  1669. characters

  1670. respond to

  1671. Jesus.

  1672. Verse 29,

  1673. this is

  1674. Simeon,

  1675. sovereign

  1676. Lord,

  1677. as you

  1678. have

  1679. promised,

  1680. you now

  1681. dismiss your

  1682. servant in

  1683. peace,

  1684. for my

  1685. eyes have

  1686. seen your

  1687. salvation.

  1688. He doesn't

  1689. need anything

  1690. else.

  1691. He's quite

  1692. happy to

  1693. die now

  1694. because he

  1695. has Jesus.

  1696. And verse

  1697. 38,

  1698. look at how

  1699. Anna responds.

  1700. Coming up at

  1701. that very

  1702. moment,

  1703. she gave

  1704. thanks to

  1705. God and

  1706. spoke about

  1707. the child.

  1708. It was

  1709. all about

  1710. Jesus

  1711. because he

  1712. was the

  1713. one who

  1714. had come

  1715. to bring

  1716. redemption.

  1717. So you

  1718. see,

  1719. salvation is

  1720. not primarily

  1721. a change in

  1722. my circumstances,

  1723. but a

  1724. change in

  1725. my

  1726. relationship.

  1727. Salvation

  1728. is all

  1729. about ordering

  1730. your life

  1731. around the

  1732. person of

  1733. Jesus and

  1734. longing for

  1735. him.

  1736. So let me

  1737. ask us all

  1738. the question,

  1739. are you at

  1740. the centre of

  1741. your own

  1742. life and

  1743. is Jesus

  1744. just simply

  1745. there to

  1746. kind of come

  1747. into your

  1748. life to

  1749. meet your

  1750. own desires

  1751. and your

  1752. wants?

  1753. Or is

  1754. Jesus the

  1755. centre of

  1756. your life

  1757. and you

  1758. are there to

  1759. serve his

  1760. desires?

  1761. Maybe

  1762. you're

  1763. disappointed

  1764. that Jesus

  1765. doesn't do

  1766. all that you

  1767. want him

  1768. to do.

  1769. Well,

  1770. let me

  1771. suggest this.

  1772. Jesus has

  1773. come to do

  1774. more than

  1775. you could

  1776. ever expect

  1777. or imagine.

  1778. He is

  1779. this promised

  1780. king,

  1781. God's

  1782. chosen

  1783. saviour

  1784. who's

  1785. come to

  1786. invite

  1787. outside

  1788. like you

  1789. and me,

  1790. welcoming

  1791. us in,

  1792. coming to

  1793. live in

  1794. weakness

  1795. and dying

  1796. on a cross

  1797. for my

  1798. sin and

  1799. for your

  1800. sin so

  1801. that we

  1802. might have

  1803. our lives

  1804. reorientated,

  1805. refocused

  1806. and living

  1807. for him.

  1808. remember,

  1809. salvation

  1810. starts

  1811. by relating

  1812. to Jesus

  1813. correctly.

  1814. How do

  1815. you

  1816. relate

  1817. to him?

  1818. Let's just

  1819. take a moment

  1820. to reflect

  1821. and think

  1822. about that

  1823. and we'll

  1824. pray

  1825. together.

  1826. there.

  1827. Whoa.

  1828. There we

  1829. are.

  1830. There we

  1831. how do you

1832. how do I relate to Jesus

1833. Father we are sorry for

  1834. treating Jesus as simply

  1835. one who comes to

  1836. meet our own needs

1837. and fix up our life

  1838. as we demand

  1839. help us to reorientate

1840. our life around him and

1841. put him at the very center

  1842. to look to him

1843. to long for more of him

  1844. in our lives

  1845. to trust him completely

1846. even when we do not understand

1847. we thank you Jesus that you came

1848. and did die for us

  1849. foolish to the world

1850. powerless to all who look

1851. but for all who are trusting

1852. it is the wisdom and power of God

1853. to change our lives today

  1854. so Father help us

1855. to keep following the Savior

1856. in all the ways that he calls us to live

1857. and that you would help us to

1858. orientate our lives around him

1859. we ask all these things in Jesus name

  1860. Amen

  1861. Mmh

  1862. um

  1863. of
