  1. 42, Luke 10, verse 25 to 37.

    Luke 10:25–37

  2. And to encourage you all, if you're able to, to come to this evening to the Delaun lecture.

  3. If you hear lecture, don't be put off by thinking, oh, that's something away up here, I couldn't

  4. do that.

  5. It's very accessible.

  6. And we want you to be encouraged in God's words.

  7. So do come tonight as well.

  8. So let's read Luke 10, verse 25 to 37.

    Luke 10:25–37

  9. On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.

  10. Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  11. What is written in the law?

  12. Jesus replied.

  13. How do you read it?

  14. He answered.

  15. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength

  16. and with all your mind.

  17. And love your neighbor as yourself.

  18. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied.

  19. Do this and you will live.

  20. But he wanted to justify himself.

  21. So he asked Jesus, and who is my neighbor?

  22. In reply, Jesus said, a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers.

  23. They stripped him of his clothes.

  24. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.

  25. A priest happened to be going down the same road.

  26. And when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.

  27. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

  28. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was.

  29. And when he saw him, he took pity on him.

  30. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

  31. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.

  32. The next day, he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper.

  33. Look after him, he said.

  34. And when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.

  35. Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?

  36. The expert in the law replied, the one who had mercy on him.

  37. Jesus told him, go and do likewise.

  38. Well, before Brian comes, I'm going to pray for you and for us.

  39. Let's pray.

  40. Father, again, we thank you for your word.

  41. Thank you that we have access to it in our language.

  42. Thank you that you have given to us gifted teachers.

  43. We thank you for Brian being here this week and speaking here today.

  44. And yet, Father, we are conscious that we have your word.

  45. We have people.

  46. We need your Holy Spirit.

  47. And we pray for his help.

  48. That through what we hear, it would be as if you are speaking to us.

  49. Changing us.

  50. Making us more like Christ.

  51. This is our desire.

  52. Amen.

  53. Thanks, Brian.

  54. It's a privilege for me to be here this morning.

  55. I've had a great week.

  56. One of the best, really.

  57. And Vincent was asking me what I thought liked the best.

  58. I mean, I saw, I know why Americans love Ireland.

  59. My wife is sort of a fanatic when it comes to Ireland.

  60. She's never been here.

  61. But I understand it all now, after being here for a week.

  62. And the best part is the people.

  63. And I'm not just saying that.

  64. That's really what you remember when you travel.

  65. Pastor Johnny told me not to preach more than an hour and a half.

  66. And Ross Campbell said it's okay if it goes two hours, but no more than that.

  67. So, I'm ready, I think.

  68. Thirteen years ago, about thirteen years ago, my father passed away.

  69. And he had owned an auto shop.

  70. Just, you know, they made repairs.

  71. And they also had gasoline or petrol out front.

  72. And he did that his whole life.

  73. He had this business something like forty-five years or something like that.

  74. And he had done it ever since he started that business or got in on it when he came back from the war.

  75. And that's what he did his whole life.

  76. And he built this business up.

  77. And one of the amazing things was that at the funeral, there was a big line of people that come and greet you.

  78. That's sort of how we do it.

  79. And I stood there with my family for two straight hours for the people to come up and greet us.

  80. And what I heard was story after story after story after story from all kinds of people that I didn't know about what my dad had done for them.

  81. You know, a lot of people just, you know, condolences.

  82. But person after person would come up and tell me a story something like, I can remember several.

  83. But one saying, you know, I met your dad thirty years ago.

  84. I pulled into his shop or I called and my car was broken down.

  85. He came and picked me up in his own car.

  86. Had my car taken to his shop.

  87. He gave me his car to use until his car was fixed.

  88. And then when I couldn't pay the bill, he gave me time to pay it.

  89. And he would always loan me his car.

  90. Because he said, my car broke down all the time.

  91. And your dad would just always give me his car.

  92. Or people would come up and say, you know, I couldn't pay my bill.

  93. And your dad would just sort of cut it in half or just let it go.

  94. And he said, you know, I think I probably never paid him everything.

  95. And he never would demand it.

  96. Or that he would do repairs for free.

  97. Or he'd come around on the weekends after working sort of kind of like eight to eight almost every day.

  98. Especially in the early years.

  99. He'd come around on weekends and fix cars for people and work on their houses.

  100. It's just one story after another after another after another.

  101. And then when we pulled out to drive up to the cemetery, I looked back.

  102. And I'm not kidding.

  103. I couldn't see the end of the row of cars that were following us to come up.

  104. And my dad was, he owned an auto shop.

  105. And, you know, and this is, and I just thought, you know, this is a testimony to my dad's life.

  106. And it was a testimony to all the people that he touched.

  107. But all the people he touched, he didn't sort of touch them in sort of big, great ways that might have made the news.

  108. Or that people would think about.

  109. It was, nobody even knew these stories.

  110. I didn't even know these stories.

  111. And, but that's the way my dad lived.

  112. And that's the way he gave himself for others.

  113. If I asked you, what's the most important thing in the Christian life?

  114. What would you say?

  115. Now, we've read, Johnny read this text and you probably know the answer, right?

  116. So the answer's already there.

  117. But if we hadn't read this text today, what might you say?

  118. And you don't have to answer out loud, of course.

  119. But just be honest with yourself.

  120. What's the most important thing you could do?

  121. What's the most important thing in the Christian life?

  122. What's the first thing that crosses your mind?

  123. Well, probably several different things.

  124. And certainly at the top of that would be love God.

  125. Well, here's my question for you.

  126. Is loving God more important for a Christian than loving your neighbor?

  127. Is it more important?

  128. Well, I suppose that kind of depends on what we mean by that, right?

  129. Because it isn't more important as long as we're not thinking about them as things that you can separate.

  130. What I mean is this.

  131. Loving God is not more important than your neighbor if you look at it as these are sort of two things you do.

  132. You love God and you've got that part down.

  133. The neighbor part, I'm not really sure what that means.

  134. They're sort of two different things.

  135. What Jesus is doing in this story is he's bringing them together.

  136. He's not separating them.

  137. He's not saying, well, you know, you love God on one sort of part of your day.

  138. That's your maybe private life with God and your, I don't know, your Bible reading and devotions and going to church and worshiping.

  139. You do those bits.

  140. And then this other part, you love your neighbor.

  141. Well, that's not how Jesus actually speaks of it.

  142. That's how this guy who comes to speak to Jesus sort of thinks of it.

  143. That's sort of two different things.

  144. Now, one comes from the other, right?

  145. It's our love for God that flows into loving our neighbor, that produces our love for our neighbor.

  146. But you can't separate them.

  147. Because if we think about our Christian walk, our Christian life as simply loving God,

  148. then the question becomes, what does that look like?

  149. What does that mean in your everyday life?

  150. Does it just mean your sort of private relationship with Jesus?

  151. And the other thing is this, what does that look like?

  152. What does love for God look like?

  153. How does it show itself?

  154. You know, these are sort of the questions that surround this text.

  155. So, again, when I say that love for God is not more important than loving your neighbor,

  156. what I mean is you can't separate.

  157. That's all I mean.

  158. And I think that's what Jesus is doing.

  159. Now, like all the parables, you know, Jesus would tell these parables.

  160. He would go around, and you can see it in this one, right?

  161. And the guy comes, asks him a question.

  162. They have this conversation.

  163. And then the guy asks one more question.

  164. And Jesus doesn't answer the question.

  165. He just tells a story.

  166. And he does this all the time.

  167. Imagine coming up to somebody and asking them a question,

  168. and they just start telling a story.

  169. Don't really answer your question, but tell you a story.

  170. And he did this over and over and over again, all the time.

  171. I'm sure the people who are around him all the time, they would know it's coming.

  172. Somebody would come and ask him a question, and one of the disciples would say,

  173. here comes a story, I'm sure of it.

  174. And then, sure enough, here comes a story.

  175. And sometimes Jesus wouldn't even, you know, really,

  176. sometimes he wouldn't even really apply it to people.

  177. Just leave them with it.

  178. And that's what Jesus' stories do.

  179. Jesus' stories come to us, and we're really familiar with it.

  180. So it can be really hard, because we know them really well.

  181. Like a story of the Good Samaritan.

  182. Virtually every Christian knows the story.

  183. And it's easy to read it, and you think, oh, I know it.

  184. And yeah, the Samaritan's a good guy.

  185. There's dirty priests, and Levites, bad guys.

  186. I really like the Samaritan.

  187. Right?

  188. We immediately sort of see ourselves in that picture.

  189. But what we sometimes forget, because we're so familiar,

  190. is these stories are meant to challenge us.

  191. We're not meant to just read this as a story,

  192. and then sort of go away thinking,

  193. wow, I love that Samaritan.

  194. He's a good guy.

  195. A priest.

  196. I can't stand that guy.

  197. That priest and that Levite.

  198. Oh, they're horrible.

  199. And that lawyer who's bugging Jesus with all these questions.

  200. He's an awful guy.

  201. I love that Samaritan.

  202. And then we sort of go our way,

  203. and maybe don't think about it again.

  204. The parables of Jesus are meant specifically to challenge us.

  205. Right?

  206. So that we read them, and we put ourselves in the story,

  207. not just in the position of the hero.

  208. Right?

  209. Not just in the position of the Samaritan,

  210. but how do we see ourselves sort of in each of the people in the story?

  211. And be really honest with ourselves.

  212. Where are we?

  213. Where do we stand in relation to all these people?

  214. Which person in this story am I most like?

  215. And then, what does it mean to love my neighbor?

  216. Right?

  217. What does that mean?

  218. What does the word neighbor even mean?

  219. Right?

  220. It's kind of a hard word, I think, sometimes for us,

  221. because we think of a neighbor as what?

  222. The people who live in the house next door or across the street.

  223. Growing up as a kid, there was a children's show.

  224. It was hugely popular.

  225. And this guy would sing the song about,

  226. Won't you be my neighbor?

  227. That's the whole, I can remember it to this day.

  228. In fact, when I hear the word neighbor in the Bible,

  229. I don't care where I am, what I'm doing,

  230. that song comes to mind immediately.

  231. I think about this guy saying,

  232. Won't you be, won't you please,

  233. won't you please, won't you be my neighbor?

  234. And I won't sing it for you.

  235. That's what always comes to mind.

  236. But I guess right off the bat, what we should say,

  237. if you want to know what a neighbor is,

  238. it's who's around you.

  239. It's the easiest way to think of it.

  240. It's the people around you.

  241. And it doesn't necessarily mean,

  242. and often doesn't mean, sort of your friends.

  243. The people that you sort of take to easily.

  244. You know, it can be those people.

  245. It doesn't exclude those people.

  246. But quite easily, a neighbor is who's around you

  247. and who's in need.

  248. That's it.

  249. Right?

  250. But just who's, the people around you.

  251. Just think of it that way.

  252. Right?

  253. Not sort of whether they're good friends

  254. or how well you know them

  255. or how long you've known them

  256. or whether you're related to them.

  257. It's love God and love people.

  258. That's going to be the easier way to put it.

  259. You know?

  260. And in the Old Testament,

  261. this was everything,

  262. just like the lawyer says.

  263. What's the middle of the law?

  264. What's the center of the law?

  265. What's easy?

  266. You love God.

  267. Love the Lord your God

  268. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  269. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  270. Those are the two things.

  271. Now, the Apostle Paul,

  272. just like Jesus,

  273. can say this.

  274. The whole law is summed up like this.

  275. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  276. And not even mention the first part.

  277. And I don't think it's because

  278. Paul just sort of forgot the God part.

  279. Right?

  280. He writes this letter

  281. to this church in Galatia

  282. and he's sort of dictating it

  283. and then he sends it off

  284. and later he's like,

  285. Oh!

  286. I always forget that first part.

  287. That first bit.

  288. Love the Lord your God

  289. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  290. I always leave that out.

  291. And I left it out this time.

  292. I just put the neighbor part in.

  293. Well, you know,

  294. it's not very likely

  295. that the Apostle Paul of all people

  296. would forget that first part.

  297. But he can say it.

  298. The whole law is summed up like this.

  299. Not just say,

  300. Love the Lord,

  301. but the whole law summed up,

  302. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  303. There's an example of it.

  304. The two things can't be separated.

  305. And Jesus can say the same thing.

  306. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  307. It's everything

  308. in a Christian context.

  309. It's everything.

  310. And when you say

  311. love your neighbor as yourself,

  312. as a Christian,

  313. it is connected to

  314. and only makes sense in

  315. Love the Lord your God

  316. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  317. And if you think about

  318. and think about

  319. Love the Lord your God

  320. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength,

  321. it shows itself

  322. in your love for the others around you.

  323. Otherwise,

  324. you're in danger of it just being words.

  325. Or you're just in danger of thinking about

  326. my relationship with God

  327. as just sort of my own private thing

  328. where I'm reading the Bible and praying.

  329. Those are good things to do.

  330. Don't get me wrong.

  331. I'm all for reading the Bible.

  332. I'm all for praying.

  333. I'm all for going to church.

  334. I'm all for worshiping.

  335. Those things are essential.

  336. But if we only think of our Christian life

  337. and our love for God

  338. as showing itself

  339. in our sort of private life with God,

  340. our private walk with God,

  341. then we're missing out on the thing

  342. that the lawyer here is missing out on.

  343. And we're missing out on the thing

  344. that both Jesus and Paul will say,

  345. it's everything.

  346. Loving those around you

  347. the way you love yourself.

  348. It's the center of everything.

  349. And so you know this story.

  350. And Johnny's read it,

  351. so I'm not going to reread the whole thing.

  352. It's easily three parts.

  353. So you have this lawyer.

  354. Now, this expert in the law.

  355. You might think of him as a scholar.

  356. Sometimes the translation will say lawyer,

  357. and that sounds like somebody who's in court.

  358. It's not really that.

  359. It's somebody who's an expert.

  360. That's what he does.

  361. His whole life is spent studying the Bible,

  362. which of course for them was the Old Testament.

  363. Right?

  364. And there's all kinds of rumors

  365. going around about Jesus.

  366. Everybody wants to know what he's like.

  367. Everybody wants to talk to him.

  368. And some of the people

  369. who knew the Bible the best

  370. were particularly interested in talking to him.

  371. And sometimes they want to trick him.

  372. Sometimes they want to sort of trip him up.

  373. And sometimes they're just curious

  374. about what he'll say and what he thinks.

  375. And so in this story,

  376. in this story,

  377. this expert in the law comes up and says,

  378. Teacher, what do I need to do to have eternal life?

  379. Now, we don't know.

  380. I mean, certainly the guy knew from the Bible.

  381. So it's probably likely he's like,

  382. I wonder what Jesus is going to say

  383. if I ask him this question.

  384. And Jesus is great.

  385. I don't know.

  386. What do you think?

  387. That's what he says.

  388. Because he knows.

  389. Jesus knows this guy's a teacher

  390. and a scholar.

  391. And the guy says,

  392. What do I have to do to inherit eternal life?

  393. I don't know.

  394. What's the law say?

  395. You're the expert.

  396. Tell me.

  397. Jesus doesn't even answer him.

  398. He doesn't say,

  399. You tell me.

  400. What's it say?

  401. So he knows.

  402. I think he immediately knows

  403. something's up with this guy.

  404. This isn't just a simple question.

  405. And he knows there's something behind it.

  406. I mean,

  407. why would an expert in the law

  408. have to ask somebody,

  409. What do I have to do to inherit eternal life?

  410. And so Jesus,

  411. and then he answers.

  412. And he says,

  413. Well,

  414. it's love the Lord your God

  415. with all your heart,

  416. soul,

  417. with all your heart,

  418. with all your soul,

  419. with all your strength,

  420. with all your mind.

  421. I mean,

  422. that's everything, right?

  423. It means with your whole being.

  424. You don't really have to think about,

  425. Well,

  426. the mind part is maybe reading

  427. and the soul part.

  428. I don't know what the soul part is.

  429. The life part is with your life and living.

  430. It just means your whole being.

  431. Everything about you.

  432. Devoted to God.

  433. That's all it means.

  434. And that's a lot.

  435. And then he says,

  436. And,

  437. love your neighbor as yourself.

  438. And Jesus says,

  439. That's right.

  440. You got it.

  441. You do that,

  442. you'll live.

  443. Now,

  444. what I always imagine

  445. is that after that,

  446. there was a little bit of silence.

  447. Like the lawyers,

  448. you know,

  449. because the lawyer came up,

  450. he doesn't get an answer.

  451. Jesus makes him answer.

  452. And Jesus says,

  453. That's right.

  454. You've got it.

  455. Just do that.

  456. And what I imagine,

  457. now I can't prove it,

  458. but what I imagine is

  459. there's a little,

  460. just time of uncomfortable silence

  461. with the lawyers maybe looking around.

  462. And, you know,

  463. Jesus' disciples,

  464. they're like,

  465. here it comes.

  466. Right?

  467. They know.

  468. And finally,

  469. after a little bit,

  470. the lawyer says,

  471. Well,

  472. okay,

  473. I've got one more question for you.

  474. And Luke tells us what's going on.

  475. Luke says he wants to justify himself.

  476. So he says,

  477. So,

  478. who is my neighbor,

  479. by the way?

  480. I mean,

  481. as long as we're talking about it.

  482. What do you think?

  483. Now,

  484. that question

  485. exposes everything we need to know

  486. about this young guy.

  487. Because if you ask somebody,

  488. Who is my neighbor?

  489. What's the question behind the question?

  490. There's a question behind there.

  491. The minute you say,

  492. So who do I need to love?

  493. What are you asking,

  494. whether you realize it or not?

  495. Who can I kind of skip over?

  496. Right?

  497. Tell me the people I really need to love

  498. to fulfill this.

  499. Because there's no,

  500. if you think,

  501. if you immediately think it's everybody,

  502. there's no reason you would ever ask,

  503. So who is my neighbor?

  504. And I don't think it's because

  505. he doesn't understand the word neighbor

  506. like the way maybe we don't.

  507. Right?

  508. He's an expert in the law.

  509. So I don't think he's saying,

  510. What's the word neighbor mean,

  511. by the way?

  512. I've always wondered about that.

  513. I mean,

  514. I've been studying the Bible

  515. for my whole entire life.

  516. I still don't get it.

  517. I think what he means is,

  518. So who do I need to be loving?

  519. You tell me.

  520. And Jesus doesn't tell him.

  521. He just tells a story.

  522. That's what he does.

  523. That's how he replies.

  524. So who is my neighbor?

  525. Now just imagine,

  526. you have to think about it for a second.

  527. Imagine,

  528. imagine saying to Jesus,

  529. Who is my neighbor?

  530. And you're sitting there looking,

  531. waiting for an answer.

  532. And Jesus says,

  533. A man was going down from Jericho.

  534. And as he went along the way,

  535. he got mugged and beaten and robbed.

  536. Hold on.

  537. Wait,

  538. did you not hear me?

  539. He had to think at some point,

  540. maybe he didn't hear my question.

  541. The question is,

  542. Who's my neighbor?

  543. I mean,

  544. I'm sure this is a great story and everything,

  545. but who is my neighbor?

  546. And so Jesus now,

  547. what Jesus will do with this story,

  548. I'll just go ahead and give the ending away.

  549. What Jesus does with this story is,

  550. he changes the guy's question.

  551. He basically says,

  552. You're asking the wrong question.

  553. You don't get it at all.

  554. Because to ask that question

  555. improves,

  556. you don't really understand.

  557. So Jesus changes the question.

  558. He will answer it,

  559. but it's sort of a long answer to say,

  560. Hey man,

  561. wrong question.

  562. You don't get it.

  563. It's not about sorting out

  564. who's your neighbor.

  565. And then he tells this story,

  566. right?

  567. He tells this story.

  568. A man went down to Jericho.

  569. Now Jericho,

  570. this road,

  571. this road is a really dangerous road.

  572. Usually when people travel on this road,

  573. if they had any money or whatever,

  574. they would bring guards or people with them.

  575. It's really well known.

  576. You can read stories about it.

  577. If you travel down from Jerusalem down to Jericho,

  578. it's really rocky

  579. and lots of places for people to hide.

  580. People got mugged and robbed on it all the time.

  581. Really,

  582. really dangerous road.

  583. Right?

  584. So I'm sure there's somebody sitting in the audience

  585. thinking,

  586. Well,

  587. of course,

  588. served him right.

  589. Shouldn't have been walking down the road

  590. in the first place.

  591. And so,

  592. he's walking down the road.

  593. He gets mugged.

  594. Jesus goes really quick,

  595. right?

  596. They beat him to death.

  597. They leave him for dead.

  598. All right?

  599. And remember,

  600. the question is,

  601. Who is my neighbor?

  602. And Jesus says,

  603. Well,

  604. okay,

  605. this guy's going down.

  606. He gets mugged.

  607. He gets half,

  608. he's left for dead.

  609. And then,

  610. a priest comes by.

  611. Well,

  612. if you're listening to the story,

  613. and especially if you're that lawyer,

  614. the expert in the law,

  615. the people probably have friends who are priests.

  616. And besides,

  617. what do priests do?

  618. What's the job of a priest?

  619. A job of a priest in Israel was to do this.

  620. Was to maintain and keep the relationship

  621. between God and his people

  622. by offering sacrifices.

  623. Right?

  624. He's the sort of go-between

  625. between God and the people.

  626. He's the one who keeps the relationship

  627. smooth and running.

  628. His job is to keep God

  629. and people sort of reconciled together

  630. on a regular basis

  631. through the sacrifices.

  632. Right?

  633. That's why he exists.

  634. He only exists

  635. to keep up that relationship

  636. between God and people.

  637. That's what priests do.

  638. You're like the big-time hero, right?

  639. That's what he does.

  640. They can't really sort of function without them.

  641. I mean, they can,

  642. but they don't want to.

  643. And so the priest comes by,

  644. and you must be thinking,

  645. if you're sitting there,

  646. ah,

  647. it's going to help him.

  648. Nope.

  649. He saw the man,

  650. and he walked to the other side of the road.

  651. Now,

  652. people suggest all kinds of things for this.

  653. Maybe the priest was afraid

  654. if he's dead and he touches him,

  655. you know,

  656. he becomes unclean,

  657. as though that's a good excuse.

  658. Or he just looks at him and thinks,

  659. well,

  660. you know,

  661. I don't know.

  662. Maybe he's just resting.

  663. I don't know what he's doing.

  664. But it's really clear.

  665. He sees him over there

  666. and crosses to the other side.

  667. Right?

  668. Of all the people

  669. who should know the phrase,

  670. I desire mercy,

  671. not sacrifice,

  672. it should have been this guy,

  673. the priest.

  674. And what does he do?

  675. He sees a person in need.

  676. Maybe he knows he's a Samaritan,

  677. which makes it even worse.

  678. Sorry, sorry.

  679. Getting ahead of myself.

  680. He sees this guy in need.

  681. He crosses the street,

  682. keeps right on walking.

  683. I mean,

  684. well,

  685. I mean,

  686. what next?

  687. Well,

  688. next comes a Levite.

  689. Now,

  690. who are the Levites?

  691. The Levites were the people

  692. who helped the priests.

  693. That was their job.

  694. That was their,

  695. you know,

  696. they came from Levi

  697. and their job was to assist

  698. in all the stuff

  699. that takes place in the temple.

  700. That's what they did.

  701. That's why they were alive.

  702. That's what God gave them to do.

  703. So you have the priest

  704. and then comes a guy

  705. next,

  706. right behind him,

  707. the guy who,

  708. his whole life

  709. is devoted to helping the priest

  710. keep the relationship

  711. between the people of Israel

  712. and God intact.

  713. That's what they do.

  714. That's what they exist for.

  715. They exist

  716. to keep that relationship,

  717. that covenant,

  718. intact

  719. so that the people

  720. can be before God

  721. and worship God

  722. and that's what they do.

  723. They maintain

  724. all the worship.

  725. Everything that takes place

  726. between God and people.

  727. That's what they do.

  728. They are,

  729. they are the religious elite

  730. of the time.

  731. Nobody is above them.

  732. Right?

  733. They are the ones.

  734. They are the ones.

  735. Nobody has more authority,

  736. really.

  737. Nobody is,

  738. say,

  739. more respected.

  740. Nobody knows the Bible better.

  741. Nobody lives it out.

  742. I mean,

  743. they're devoted,

  744. full-time ministers.

  745. That's basically

  746. sort of what they are.

  747. Full-time.

  748. And yet,

  749. they see this guy

  750. and they keep right on going.

  751. Now,

  752. we don't know,

  753. we don't know why

  754. they kept right on going,

  755. but I would say this.

  756. When we read a story like this,

  757. we don't want to be too quick

  758. just to be like,

  759. just to think,

  760. oh,

  761. awful.

  762. These people are awful.

  763. What we need to do is think,

  764. so what about me?

  765. If I'm walking down,

  766. it didn't have to be

  767. just this scenario,

  768. right?

  769. Because what,

  770. I mean,

  771. why did they stay away

  772. from the guy?

  773. We don't know.

  774. But what's important is,

  775. they stayed away.

  776. I mean,

  777. maybe it was,

  778. they didn't want to,

  779. they didn't want to touch him,

  780. they were afraid he's dead

  781. and maybe that would make them

  782. unclean according to the law.

  783. I don't know.

  784. Maybe they just didn't have

  785. time for it.

  786. You know,

  787. they've got some place to be.

  788. They've got some place to go.

  789. Something they have to do.

  790. I don't really have time

  791. for that guy.

  792. He's probably going to die anyway.

  793. What am I supposed to do?

  794. I'm going to keep right on going.

  795. We don't know why.

  796. Certainly,

  797. they had nothing to gain

  798. from helping him.

  799. I mean,

  800. this guy is not going to be able

  801. to give them something,

  802. right?

  803. They're not going to,

  804. they have to completely invest in him.

  805. They're not going to get anything back.

  806. It's not really a win situation

  807. for them and they can just ignore it.

  808. They can just go by

  809. as though it's not existing.

  810. So we don't know.

  811. But we do know this.

  812. They just ignored it.

  813. They just ignored the need.

  814. They didn't look at him.

  815. They didn't do what they,

  816. they didn't even check on him.

  817. And it's easy to look

  818. and we should,

  819. we should look at that.

  820. Of course,

  821. that's the wrong thing to do.

  822. But we don't want to be so fast

  823. to look at them

  824. and say,

  825. oh,

  826. I can't stand people like that.

  827. I think one of the things

  828. that the parable challenges us to do

  829. is,

  830. are we people like that?

  831. And it doesn't have to be

  832. because you saw a person half dead

  833. and you walked to the other side

  834. of the street.

  835. Are we people like that?

  836. Are we people who slow down

  837. and take the time

  838. to invest in people

  839. who can't give us anything back?

  840. Who have need?

  841. And we have some way

  842. of fulfilling that need

  843. even if it's just to check on them.

  844. Even if it's just to take time

  845. out of our own day,

  846. out of our own schedule.

  847. So we need to ask ourselves

  848. that question.

  849. And I think that's what

  850. Jesus is pressing the lawyer

  851. to do, by the way.

  852. Because he's an expert in the law.

  853. He could have said,

  854. Jesus could have added

  855. another person.

  856. A priest,

  857. a Levite,

  858. and then a scholar

  859. of the law comes.

  860. They would have all been

  861. like friends

  862. hanging out together.

  863. This was his crowd.

  864. When this guy went

  865. and hung around

  866. with his friends

  867. at night

  868. or wherever,

  869. whenever,

  870. it would have been

  871. people like priests

  872. and Levites.

  873. That's who he knew.

  874. He knew them.

  875. It was his people,

  876. his crowd,

  877. his peer group

  878. or whatever.

  879. And Jesus says,

  880. look,

  881. they walked right by.

  882. The people who should know

  883. best of all

  884. what they should do.

  885. The people who know

  886. the most about the Bible.

  887. The people who know

  888. the most about Israel.

  889. The people who know

  890. most about what pleases God.

  891. The people whose job it is

  892. to maintain the relationship

  893. between God and people.

  894. Turns out they're all talk.

  895. They do their jobs.

  896. They get on with it.

  897. But it turns out

  898. they don't care about people.

  899. And you can see it.

  900. And then that raises

  901. another question.

  902. What does that say

  903. about their love for God?

  904. And then comes

  905. the most unlikely character

  906. of all.

  907. Sort of a half-cousin.

  908. Right?

  909. A Samaritan.

  910. Now I won't get into

  911. a big history lesson

  912. about the Samaritans.

  913. It's just,

  914. I'll say this.

  915. The Samaritans lived

  916. up north in Samaria.

  917. And they were

  918. kind of half-Jewish.

  919. They had their own

  920. sacrifices.

  921. They had their own temple.

  922. They had their own priests.

  923. And there was no love lost

  924. between the Samaritans

  925. and the Jews.

  926. They didn't like each other.

  927. They were kind of close.

  928. And you know how it is

  929. with people you're

  930. kind of related to

  931. or you're related to.

  932. You just have,

  933. it's sometimes the hardest

  934. to get along with them

  935. of anybody.

  936. Right?

  937. Sometimes it's harder

  938. to get along with your family

  939. than your enemies sometimes.

  940. You know what,

  941. well maybe I'm just

  942. speaking personally.

  943. I don't know.

  944. And I don't mean

  945. my immediate family

  946. don't start thinking

  947. about my marriage

  948. or something like that.

  949. So,

  950. they just don't like each other.

  951. And a Jew

  952. can't come in contact

  953. with the Samaritan

  954. without becoming unclean.

  955. And they really

  956. just didn't like them.

  957. He's the most,

  958. so I'm sure

  959. the Jewish audience

  960. and the lawyers

  961. thinking,

  962. oh,

  963. so he's going to

  964. kick the guy in the head.

  965. Right?

  966. He's going to kick him

  967. while he's down.

  968. The priest didn't do

  969. anything he should have.

  970. The Levite didn't do

  971. anything he should have.

  972. The Samaritan's

  973. going to finish him off.

  974. Certainly.

  975. Right?

  976. He's going to just go

  977. kick him while he's down.

  978. There's no chance.

  979. There's no chance

  980. in the first century

  981. a Jewish person

  982. is telling this story

  983. and the Samaritan's

  984. going to be the hero.

  985. No chance.

  986. None.

  987. Zero.

  988. Nobody listening to the story

  989. is expecting

  990. what happens next.

  991. He's just a Samaritan.

  992. And what does

  993. the Samaritan do?

  994. Well,

  995. I'm not going to

  996. retrace all the steps

  997. of what he does,

  998. but you can say it

  999. like this.

  1000. He invests

  1001. in this person

  1002. with needs.

  1003. He goes to him.

  1004. He cares for him.

  1005. And he goes,

1006. he doesn't just sort of

1007. throw some money at him.

  1008. He invests his life

1009. in the life of this guy.

  1010. That's what he does.

1011. He gives him his time

  1012. and whatever resources

  1013. he has.

1014. He gives it to him.

  1015. Why?

  1016. Because of what he's

  1017. going to get back?

  1018. No.

  1019. I think that's the key.

1020. That's one of the keys

  1021. of this story.

  1022. The Samaritan

  1023. has nothing to gain

  1024. for this person

1025. has nothing to offer him.

1026. He's not going to get

  1027. anything back from it.

  1028. Right?

  1029. I mean,

  1030. you know,

  1031. unless we start

  1032. building story upon story

  1033. and think,

  1034. well,

  1035. maybe the guy's rich

1036. and later he'll give him

  1037. some money.

  1038. You know,

  1039. it's like some kind

1040. of fairy tale or something.

  1041. Turns out this guy's

  1042. the king of something.

1043. It's not like that at all.

  1044. It's just some guy

  1045. who's beat up

  1046. beside the road

  1047. and can't help himself.

  1048. And the Samaritan comes,

  1049. the most unlikely person,

  1050. not a hero,

1051. and he gives what he has

1052. to take care of this person.

  1053. And then Jesus

  1054. has a simple question.

  1055. Which do you think

  1056. was the neighbor

1057. to the one who fell?

  1058. It's not,

  1059. who is my neighbor?

  1060. Jesus turns the question,

  1061. do you get it?

  1062. Jesus turns the question

  1063. to,

1064. so who was the neighbor?

1065. Not who is your neighbor,

1066. I'm going to tell you.

  1067. Who was the neighbor?

1068. And so what he's saying

1069. to the guy is this.

  1070. The question is not,

  1071. who is my neighbor?

  1072. The question is,

  1073. who are you

1074. to the people around you?

  1075. You,

1076. who are so quick to say,

1077. love the Lord your God

  1078. with all your heart,

  1079. soul, mind, and strength,

  1080. and love your neighbor

  1081. as yourself.

  1082. And then Jesus

  1083. tells the story

  1084. about a guy,

  1085. two guys

1086. who should have known better,

  1087. who did not love

  1088. their neighbor.

  1089. Yet,

  1090. by their very lives,

  1091. they're associated

1092. as people who love God.

  1093. Priests and Levites.

1094. And then Jesus just says,

  1095. I mean,

1096. the guy says the right thing

  1097. at the end.

1098. The expert in the law says,

  1099. Jesus says,

  1100. who is the neighbor?

  1101. And the guy says,

1102. the one who had mercy.

  1103. And Jesus says,

  1104. so go do that.

  1105. Right?

  1106. And he never directly

  1107. answers his question.

  1108. In fact,

1109. he does answer his question

  1110. to say,

  1111. oh, by the way,

  1112. who's your neighbor?

  1113. Look around you.

  1114. That's the answer.

1115. Who am I supposed to love?

  1116. Look around you.

  1117. That's it.

  1118. That's what he's supposed

  1119. to be concerned with

1120. because his love for God

1121. is going to be shown

1122. in how he loves others.

1123. Because our love for others

1124. is the most sort of tangible

  1125. or clearest example

  1126. or clearest revelation,

  1127. if you will.

1128. Maybe that's not the best word

1129. of how we love God.

  1130. Our love for God

  1131. has to show itself,

1132. not just be something we say.

  1133. Right?

1134. And this is how Jesus,

  1135. I think,

  1136. is challenging us.

1137. This is how he's challenging us

  1138. through this parable

  1139. because imagine this.

1140. What if God had said,

  1141. all right,

1142. I'm going to save the world

1143. and here's what I'm going to do.

1144. I'm going to go down.

  1145. I mean,

  1146. as though, you know,

1147. you have to bear with me.

1148. And I'm going to spend time

  1149. with those people

1150. who are most like me.

  1151. All right?

1152. I want to find the people

1153. who are kind of like me.

1154. The people who have something

  1155. to offer me back

1156. in my friendship with them.

1157. The people who I'm just drawn to

1158. because they have the same interests

  1159. as me.

1160. They're into the same stuff

  1161. I'm into.

  1162. Right?

1163. They have the same kind of history

  1164. as me.

1165. They come from the same

1166. sort of background as me.

1167. We just have a lot in common.

  1168. And, you know,

  1169. at the very least,

1170. they're going to love me back

  1171. immediately.

1172. And we're just going to get along.

1173. I'm going to go help those people.

  1174. Well,

  1175. heaven would be empty

  1176. of anybody

  1177. from all of creation

  1178. if God selected first.

  1179. Now,

1180. who is going to be my neighbor?

1181. And I'm going to base it on

1182. the people who are most like me.

  1183. Right?

  1184. So I think Jesus,

  1185. of course,

  1186. in this story

1187. is pointing to his own love

  1188. for us.

1189. That he comes for us.

  1190. We have nothing.

  1191. He comes for us

1192. not because we have something

1193. to give back to him.

  1194. Not because,

1195. not because we're going to

  1196. sort of chip in

  1197. on that relationship

  1198. and make it,

  1199. you know,

  1200. sort of fulfill

  1201. Jesus' sort of

  1202. personal being

1203. by adding something to him.

1204. He comes and gives us

  1205. everything we need

  1206. when we are like

1207. the guy in the picture

1208. who have been left for dead.

  1209. And that's the picture

1210. he leaves with this lawyer.

  1211. And so,

  1212. that's how I think

1213. we need to read this story

  1214. in just this way.

  1215. Just the way Jesus

  1216. challenges this lawyer.

  1217. To think,

  1218. so,

  1219. who is my neighbor?

  1220. Well,

  1221. who's around me?

  1222. Now,

  1223. you can apply this

  1224. in really easy ways.

1225. And I think the best way

  1226. to ever apply

1227. any kind of Bible story

  1228. is to start small.

  1229. Don't immediately think about,

  1230. alright,

  1231. I'm going to

  1232. leave my job tomorrow.

1233. I'm going to pack up.

1234. I'm going to move to

  1235. the furthest place away

  1236. I can possibly go.

1237. And I'm going to start

  1238. preaching,

  1239. like,

  1240. by Wednesday.

  1241. Alright,

  1242. we tend to,

  1243. I do.

1244. I tend to think that way

  1245. and forget about

  1246. all the things

  1247. that are happening

  1248. right around me.

  1249. Well,

  1250. the thing you do

  1251. about the way

  1252. you carry this out

  1253. is you just

  1254. look around you.

  1255. And in the simplest,

  1256. easiest,

  1257. not easy,

  1258. sometimes it's not easy

  1259. actually,

1260. but in the simplest ways

  1261. of helping anybody

  1262. in need,

  1263. anybody who can

  1264. use your time,

  1265. right,

  1266. anybody who can use

  1267. what you have,

  1268. your life,

1269. just a piece of your life

  1270. that you can give

  1271. to somebody else

  1272. without hope

  1273. of return,

  1274. that shows

  1275. our love for God.

  1276. Because then we're

  1277. loving people

  1278. like the way

  1279. God loves us.

  1280. And it can be

  1281. really simple.

  1282. You can just have

  1283. a few extra minutes

  1284. in your day

  1285. that you can give

  1286. to somebody

  1287. who you know

  1288. needs the time.

  1289. Or when somebody

  1290. asks us,

  1291. hey,

  1292. could you do this

  1293. for me?

  1294. Could you help me

  1295. out on Thursday?

  1296. Here's,

  1297. here's,

  1298. I'll just,

  1299. here's my,

  1300. my sort of response

  1301. is when somebody

  1302. says,

  1303. hey,

  1304. do you think,

  1305. and I know

  1306. they're going to ask

  1307. me for a favor.

  1308. And I start

  1309. immediately thinking,

  1310. oh,

  1311. this week I've got

  1312. to do this,

1313. I've got to do this,

  1314. I've got to,

  1315. so I'm already

1316. thinking of all the things,

  1317. I don't even know

  1318. what they're going

1319. to ask me for yet,

  1320. and I'm already

1321. thinking of all the things

  1322. that are going to

  1323. keep me from being

  1324. able to help them

  1325. because these are

1326. things I need to do.

  1327. Now,

  1328. I'm not saying

  1329. if you think that

  1330. you should start,

  1331. you know,

  1332. beating yourself up,

1333. but we have to think

  1334. beyond those things

  1335. and think,

  1336. okay,

1337. so what can I do?

  1338. And just easy things,

  1339. that sounds like

  1340. not much,

  1341. right?

1342. It sounds like not much,

1343. but as we do those things,

  1344. we start to change

  1345. because we're applying

  1346. the love of God

  1347. to the world,

  1348. to those around us,

1349. in the simplest of ways.

  1350. It might be ways,

  1351. and you might even

1352. be called to do that

  1353. to somebody who's

  1354. never going to say

  1355. thank you,

  1356. who maybe will just

  1357. ask you again

  1358. and again and again

1359. and never seem to care

  1360. that you're doing it

  1361. because they can't

  1362. give back

1363. or maybe don't want to

1364. or any number of things.

1365. All I'm saying is this,

  1366. Jesus is calling us

1367. not just to be hearers

  1368. of his word,

  1369. but doers.

  1370. And he gives us

  1371. opportunities all the time

  1372. to do it.

  1373. So I don't want you

1374. to go away from here today

  1375. just simply feeling guilty

  1376. about all the things

1377. that you maybe could have done

  1378. that you didn't do.

1379. And I'm going to try

  1380. not to leave here

  1381. feeling that way too.

1382. What we need to do

  1383. is think,

  1384. okay,

  1385. right,

1386. God is speaking to me

  1387. in his word,

1388. we're going out from here,

  1389. there's any number

  1390. of people I can

  1391. spend time with,

1392. I can give my time with

  1393. because,

  1394. you know,

  1395. if you don't have,

1396. you don't have to have

  1397. a lot of money,

  1398. the most precious thing

1399. you can give to anybody

1400. really is just your time

  1401. to any degree,

  1402. even when you don't

1403. have any time to give.

1404. And even if that time

1405. is not going to be

  1406. super pleasant for you

  1407. because of the person

1408. you're with at the moment,

1409. you can still give it to them.

  1410. Right?

1411. And that's how we show

  1412. the love of God.

  1413. By thinking,

  1414. so who is,

1415. which one is it going to be?

  1416. But think,

  1417. oh,

1418. God's made it really easy

  1419. for me.

  1420. Who is my neighbor?

1421. All I've got to do

  1422. is look around.

  1423. And there's some way,

  1424. somehow,

  1425. that you can invest

1426. in the lives of others

  1427. and show people,

  1428. and show people everywhere,

  1429. our love.

1430. And what are we showing?

  1431. Not our love,

  1432. but what?

  1433. God's love.

  1434. That's what we're doing.

  1435. You see,

  1436. Jesus is pushing

1437. this expert in the law,

  1438. this scholar,

  1439. he's pressing him

1440. to be more than words,

  1441. more than just knowing

  1442. all the right answers,

  1443. but to be somebody

1444. who is not just a hearer,

  1445. but a doer.

  1446. And then he says,

1447. go and do what you're hearing.

  1448. Let's pray.

  1449. Lord,

1450. thank you for the time

1451. we have in your word.

1452. Thank you for how you speak

  1453. to us in stories

1454. and ways that we can clearly

  1455. hear and see

  1456. that can become part

  1457. of who we are.

  1458. Lord,

1459. help us not to just

  1460. go away from this,

  1461. just reading it

  1462. or hearing it again

  1463. for the who knows

  1464. how many times,

1465. but be changed by it,

1466. to be challenged by it.

  1467. Lord,

1468. and we all feel our,

1469. we all feel how we've

  1470. come up short

  1471. so we confess,

  1472. Lord,

1473. that we haven't lived this way

  1474. the way we should

  1475. and we confess

1476. and we come to you

1477. believing that you forgive us,

1478. that you don't hold it against us,

  1479. and that however much

1480. we haven't done in the past

  1481. is in no way

  1482. keeping us

1483. from being empowered by you

  1484. this week,

  1485. today,

  1486. tomorrow,

  1487. whenever,

1488. to love those around us

1489. and share the love of Jesus

  1490. with the world

  1491. and show our love

1492. for the God who loved us.

  1493. Amen.
