  1. to the nations. The Spirit signified the presence and the power of God.

  2. And the very servant that God spoke about would say this himself.

  3. The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.

  4. And so for years the people waited in expectation for the power and the presence of God to come.

  5. Now the promise has become a reality.

  6. Look back to Luke chapter 3 verse 21, which is really the start or the beginning of Jesus' public ministry.

    Luke 3:21

  7. Chapter 3 verse 21, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too.

  8. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.

  9. Look at chapter 4 verse 1, Jesus full of the Holy Spirit.

  10. Verse 14, Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.

  11. God is on the move.

  12. Jesus, the Spirit-filled, Spirit-empowered King has finally come.

  13. And God is about to do something in the world through Jesus.

  14. Three things we're going to see about this Spirit-filled King.

  15. Who he is, what he has come to do, and why this is good news.

  16. Who he is, what he's come to do, and why this is good news.

  17. So first, who Jesus is.

    Isaiah 4:1

  18. Chapter 4 verse 1,

  19. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, was led by the Spirit in the desert,

  20. where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil.

  21. Tempted by the devil.

  22. Now where else in the Bible story have we ever come across that?

  23. Well, right at the very start of the Bible story, way back in Genesis chapter 1 and 2,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  24. we are introduced to the first man, Adam.

  25. Now Luke, significantly, has just told us something about Adam.

  26. If you look back to the very end of chapter 3,

  27. in fact, if you go to verse 23,

  28. you get this long genealogy,

  29. tracing the line of Jesus.

  30. So we read in verse 23,

  31. now Jesus himself was about 30 years old when he began his ministry.

  32. He was the son.

  33. So it was thought of Joseph.

  34. Of course, Joseph wasn't the biological father of Jesus.

  35. Luke has already told us back in chapter 135,

  36. that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

  37. However, the point is of this genealogy, for us anyway,

  38. is where it finishes.

  39. Look at verse 38 at the very end of chapter 3.

  40. So it goes through all these lists of names,

  41. where it says the son of Enosh,

  42. the son of Seth,

  43. the son of Adam,

  44. the son of God.

  45. Adam was the son of God.

  46. He didn't have a biological father like you or I,

  47. but God had created Adam out of the earth.

  48. And he had created Adam in his image.

  49. So Adam was to reflect God

  50. and to be some ways God's representative on the earth.

  51. And as God's son,

  52. Adam was to show the whole world

  53. what it was like to live under God's rule.

  54. But then there was the temptation in the garden.

  55. And Adam failed.

  56. Rather than reflect God,

  57. he rebelled against God.

  58. Instead of being God's representative,

  59. Adam wanted to be God.

  60. Adam, the son of God,

  61. failed.

  62. Now the thing is,

  63. we are all sons of Adam.

  64. We can all trace our family line

  65. right the way back to the first man,

  66. Adam.

  67. And we are just like him.

  68. We've all failed.

  69. We all want to be God.

  70. We want to be the centre of the universe.

  71. We want to do things our way.

  72. That's why the world is the way it is.

  73. It's why Stephen Paddock

  74. shot and murdered all those people.

  75. It's why Trump and Kim

  76. are threatening to blow each other up.

  77. It's why our relationships break

  78. and our friendships fall apart.

  79. We want to be God.

  80. We want to rule our own lives

  81. and live as we please.

  82. As sons of Adam,

  83. we have all failed.

  84. Now, with all that in mind,

  85. and I think that's why Luke finishes

  86. chapter 3 with the son of Adam,

  87. the son of God,

  88. and jumps straight in with

  89. chapter 4, verse 1,

  90. verse 1,

  91. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,

  92. returned from the Jordan

  93. and was led by the Spirit in the desert

  94. where for 40 days

  95. he was tempted by the devil.

  96. Verse 3,

  97. the devil said to him,

  98. if you are the son of God,

  99. tell this stone to become bread.

  100. Every temptation,

  101. there were three specific temptations

  102. that Jesus faced in the desert,

  103. was ultimately a temptation

  104. to take the place of God.

  105. If you are the son of God,

  106. go on, Jesus,

  107. take things into your own hands.

  108. Don't be bothered about

  109. what God's word says.

  110. Do what you think.

  111. Well, what would Jesus do?

  112. Well, where Adam failed,

  113. Jesus was faithful.

  114. You see,

  115. Jesus came as the true

  116. son of God.

  117. The obedient,

  118. sinless,

  119. and faithful son

  120. where every other person

  121. in the history of the world

  122. has failed

  123. and crumbled under temptation.

  124. Jesus has been faithful.

  125. Here is one

  126. that we can count on.

  127. Here is one

  128. who we can trust.

  129. By passing the test

  130. of temptation,

  131. Jesus proves

  132. that he alone

  133. is qualified

  134. to be God's

  135. spirit-empowered

  136. king.

  137. Everything that broke

  138. through Adam's failure

  139. can now be put right

  140. through Jesus'

  141. faithfulness.

  142. God is on the move

  143. and he is now at work

  144. through his faithful,

  145. obedient,

  146. sinless son,

  147. Jesus Christ.

  148. So,

  149. what has this

  150. Jesus

  151. come to do?

  152. Well,

  153. following the temptation,

  154. look down

  155. at verse 16.

  156. Jesus went to Nazareth

  157. where he had been

  158. brought up

  159. and on the Sabbath day

  160. he went into the synagogue

  161. as was his custom

  162. and he stood up

  163. to read.

  164. Now,

  165. the synagogue

  166. in some ways

  167. was like your local church.

  168. Yes,

  169. there was the temple

  170. up in Jerusalem

  171. but not everybody

  172. could get to the temple

  173. so they met in these

  174. what were called

  175. synagogues,

  176. these small buildings.

  177. And the usual practice,

  178. similar in some ways

  179. to what we have done

  180. this morning,

  181. there would have been

  182. singing,

  183. but the singing of Psalms.

  184. And then at some point

  185. somebody would read

  186. something from

  187. the books of Moses,

  188. the first five books,

  189. and then a little bit

  190. later on there would be

  191. a reading from

  192. the Old Testament.

  193. And then they would

  194. sit down

  195. and as was their custom,

  196. different to us,

  197. I stand,

  198. but they sat

  199. and they gave

  200. a little mini sermon

  201. about what they

  202. had just read.

  203. And on this particular day

  204. Jesus has come

  205. to the synagogue

  206. to worship

  207. and Jesus has been

  208. asked to do

  209. the reading.

  210. verse 17.

  211. The scroll

  212. of the prophet Isaiah

  213. was handed him

  214. so they didn't have

  215. neatly bound books

  216. like we do,

  217. but these great big scrolls

  218. and maybe divided up

  219. different parts of Isaiah.

  220. And we can imagine

  221. Jesus unrolling

  222. this great big scroll

  223. and searching.

  224. There's no numbers,

  225. no chapters,

  226. no verses,

  227. but he knows his Bible

  228. and he specifically

  229. has turned

  230. to this section

  231. in Isaiah.

    Isaiah 61:1

  232. Chapter 61,

  233. verses 1 and 2

  234. and unrolling it,

  235. verse 17,

  236. he found the place

  237. where it is written.

  238. He reads from Isaiah,

  239. The Spirit of the Lord

  240. is on me

  241. because he has anointed me

  242. to preach good news

  243. to the poor.

  244. He sent me to proclaim

  245. freedom for the prisoners

  246. and recovery of sight

  247. for the blind,

  248. to release the oppressed,

  249. to proclaim the year

  250. of the Lord's favour.

  251. Well, you could imagine

  252. everyone nodding their heads

  253. in agreement.

  254. Good choice of reading.

  255. Ah, yes.

  256. The promise of God

  257. to send his spirit-filled servant.

  258. That's going to be someday

  259. when that happens.

  260. We can even hear

  261. the little boy

  262. asking his father,

  263. when's this going

  264. to happen, Dad?

  265. Well, it's been

  266. several hundred years

  267. since Isaiah wrote this.

  268. We hope

  269. sometime soon.

  270. Well, they're in

  271. for the shock

  272. of their lives.

  273. Verse 20,

  274. Jesus rolled up

  275. the scroll,

  276. gave it back

  277. to his attendant,

  278. who would have put it

  279. back into the cupboard

  280. at the back,

  281. and Jesus sat down

  282. to give the mini-sermon.

  283. The eyes of everyone

  284. in the synagogue

  285. were fastened on him

  286. and he began

  287. by saying to them,

  288. today,

  289. this scripture

  290. is fulfilled

  291. in your hearing.

  292. I am the one.

  293. I am the spirit-filled,

  294. spirit-empowered,

  295. promised king,

  296. the one that you

  297. have been waiting for

  298. down through the centuries.

  299. It's me.

  300. I'm the Messiah.

  301. What you've longed for

  302. has now become a reality.

  303. I am the one.

  304. Well, the text

  305. that Jesus reads

  306. explains to us

  307. what he had come to do.

  308. You won't notice it

  309. at first.

  310. Well, maybe you do,

  311. but I certainly didn't.

  312. I needed a very clever

  313. commentator

  314. to point it out to me.

  315. But when you read

  316. what is written

  317. in Isaiah 61,

    Isaiah 61:1–2

  318. verses 1 to 2,

  319. we had it read earlier

  320. by Chris,

  321. if you compared that

  322. with the quotation

  323. that we have in Luke,

    Luke 4:18

  324. chapter 4,

  325. verses 18 and 19,

  326. you'll notice that

  327. there was something different.

  328. Something is added

  329. and something is missing.

  330. What's added

  331. is found at the very end

  332. of verse 18

  333. of chapter 4,

  334. where it says,

  335. to release the oppressed.

  336. So Jesus is reading,

  337. but he adds in this line,

  338. to release the oppressed.

  339. It comes from another part

  340. in Isaiah.

  341. And I don't think

  342. Jesus is adding to Scripture.

  343. It seems to be

  344. more of an interpretation.

  345. Everything that this quote

  346. is saying

  347. can be summed up

  348. in the phrase,

  349. to release the oppressed.

  350. That's my mission.

  351. The oppressed are,

  352. as we see at the end

  353. in the middle of verse 18,

  354. the poor,

  355. the prisoner,

  356. and the blind.

  357. They are the hopeless

  358. and the helpless.

  359. Now as we begin

  360. to read through Luke's Gospel,

  361. we'll discover that

  362. the oppressed

  363. become a model

  364. or a symbol

  365. for Christian faith.

  366. Physically and materially,

  367. the oppressed,

  368. well,

  369. they have nothing.

  370. They're people

  371. who are dependent

  372. on outside help.

  373. If it weren't

  374. for other people,

  375. they would die.

  376. And that becomes

  377. a model for how

  378. we should come

  379. to God spiritually.

  380. We come as hopeless

  381. and helpless people,

  382. dependent

  383. and completely reliant

  384. upon God's grace.

  385. So Jesus adds something

  386. to explain something

  387. of his mission,

  388. but there's also

  389. something missing.

  390. If you were to read

  391. Isaiah 61,

    Isaiah 61:1–2

  392. verses 1 to 2,

  393. it finishes like this.

  394. You may remember

  395. what it said.

  396. To proclaim the year

  397. of the Lord's favour

  398. and the day of vengeance

  399. of our God.

  400. Now when Jesus

  401. starts quoting Isaiah here,

  402. it finishes like this,

  403. verse 19.

  404. to proclaim the year

  405. of the Lord's favour.

  406. Full stop.

  407. There's no mentions

  408. of vengeance.

  409. There's no judgment here.

  410. Again,

  411. I don't think

  412. Jesus is changing

  413. scripture.

  414. He's simply

  415. wanting to emphasize

  416. that his coming,

  417. his mission

  418. into this world

  419. is a time of grace,

  420. not judgment.

  421. There is a judgment

  422. to come,

  423. but for now

  424. it is salvation,

  425. not condemnation.

  426. The year of the Lord's favour

  427. is jam-packed

  428. with meaning.

  429. It comes from

  430. one of the laws

  431. that God had given

  432. to his people

  433. right back in the Old Testament.

  434. A law that God

  435. had given to his people

  436. about cancelling

  437. debts.

  438. It was a law

  439. that said

  440. at the end

  441. of every seven years,

  442. everybody who had a debt

  443. was released

  444. from having to pay.

  445. Now,

  446. could you imagine that?

  447. All the money

  448. that you owe,

  449. after seven years,

  450. that debt

  451. could be written off,

  452. all cancelled.

  453. If your bank statement

  454. said minus,

  455. it would be made

  456. a zero.

  457. Wow!

  458. But better than that,

  459. in the 50th year,

  460. so get your maths

  461. into order here,

  462. after seven cycles

  463. of seven years,

  464. which is

  465. 49,

  466. well done,

  467. you're still with me.

  468. So in the 50th year,

  469. so after seven cycles

  470. of seven years,

  471. anything that you owned

  472. and you had had to sell

  473. because of debt problems

  474. would all be given

  475. back to you.

  476. So not only were

  477. your debts

  478. written off,

  479. but all the property

  480. and land

  481. that you had had to sell

  482. was all restored

  483. back to you again.

  484. What an amazing,

  485. good and gracious

  486. law from God

  487. to the people.

  488. It was,

  489. verse 19,

  490. the year of the Lord's

  491. favour,

  492. a year of grace.

  493. Now,

  494. as one writer

  495. pointed out to me,

  496. in all the history

  497. of Israel,

  498. how many times

  499. do you think

  500. the 50th year

  501. of cancelling

  502. all debts

  503. happened?

  504. Do you think

  505. of all the history

  506. that we have,

  507. the hundreds and thousands

  508. of years

  509. of Israel's history,

  510. how many times

  511. did they celebrate

  512. that 50th year?

  513. None.

  514. There is not

  515. one record

  516. of this ever

  517. happening in the Bible

  518. because God's

  519. people

  520. failed

  521. to obey

  522. God's good law.

  523. They could not

  524. deal with each other

  525. in grace.

  526. They were too

  527. greedy.

  528. If people owed

  529. debts,

  530. they demanded

  531. those debts.

  532. If they had property,

  533. they kept that property.

  534. They could not

  535. deal with others

  536. in grace.

  537. Now Jesus

  538. comes

  539. and stands up

  540. before this

  541. small gathering

  542. and says,

  543. it's me.

  544. I am the year

  545. of the Lord's

  546. favour.

  547. I have come

  548. to give grace

  549. to the oppressed.

  550. Yes,

  551. Jesus is concerned

  552. for those

  553. who are oppressed

  554. economically,

  555. politically

  556. and physically.

  557. We didn't have time

  558. to read it,

  559. but read it at home

  560. the rest of chapter 4

  561. and we'll see

  562. that there

  563. Jesus released

  564. those with an evil

  565. spirit

  566. and he restored

  567. those who were sick.

  568. But he wasn't

  569. coming in a sense

  570. to kind of

  571. write off people's

  572. bank accounts

  573. and put money

  574. into their account.

  575. It wasn't

  576. that kind

  577. of prosperity.

  578. The cancellation

  579. of debt

  580. was not material

  581. but spiritual.

  582. Jesus had come

  583. to cancel

  584. the debt

  585. of our sin

  586. to release us

  587. from the coming

  588. judgment

  589. and to restore

  590. to life.

  591. Jesus has come

  592. to give grace

  593. to the oppressed

  594. to cancel

  595. the debt

  596. of sin.

  597. God

  598. is on the move

  599. and he is

  600. working through

  601. his son

  602. Jesus Christ.

  603. Now this is

  604. good news

  605. for people

  606. like you

  607. and me.

  608. You see

  609. as Jesus

  610. talked

  611. to the crowd

  612. and began

  613. to give his

  614. mini sermon

  615. verse 22

  616. all spoke

  617. well of him

  618. and were

  619. amazed

  620. at the

  621. gracious

  622. words

  623. that came

  624. from his

  625. lips.

  626. But by the

  627. time Jesus

  628. had finished

  629. his little

  630. mini sermon

  631. look at

  632. verse 29

  633. they got

  634. up

  635. drove him

  636. out of the

  637. town

  638. and took him

  639. to the brow

  640. and the hill

  641. of which the

  642. town was built

  643. in order to

  644. throw him

  645. down the

  646. cliff.

  647. What a way

  648. to start

  649. your preaching

  650. career.

  651. I can remember

  652. my very first

  653. sermon.

  654. I don't think

  655. I even got

  656. beyond five

  657. minutes.

  658. I got all

  659. in a tizz

  660. and a panic

  661. and just

  662. had to sit

  663. down.

  664. Thankfully

  665. one very

  666. kind person

  667. said well

  668. at least

  669. you didn't

  670. waffle.

  671. Nobody

  672. came gunning

  673. for me

  674. or trying

  675. to kill

  676. me.

  677. But here's

  678. Jesus

  679. his first

  680. sermon

  681. from stunning

  682. amazement

  683. to seething

  684. anger

  685. trying to

  686. kill him.

  687. What did

  688. Jesus say?

  689. Why did

  690. the crowd

  691. change?

  692. Why are

  693. they so

  694. angry?

  695. Well look

  696. at verse

  697. 22

  698. the end.

  699. They asked

  700. isn't this

  701. Joseph's

  702. son?

  703. Well

  704. everybody

  705. knew

  706. Joseph

  707. in Nazareth

  708. it was a

  709. small town

  710. and well

  711. Joseph was

  712. the town

  713. carpenter.

  714. He was

  715. that simple

  716. character.

  717. And now

  718. his son

  719. who had

  720. taken over

  721. the business

  722. is claiming

  723. to be

  724. the Messiah.

  725. God's

  726. spirit

  727. empowered

  728. king.

  729. Well he

  730. doesn't look

  731. much.

  732. He's a bit

  733. ordinary.

  734. I think

  735. he should

  736. just get

  737. back to

  738. cutting wood

  739. and stop

  740. dreaming

  741. dreams.

  742. Jesus

  743. it seems

  744. knows their

  745. hearts.

  746. Verse 23

  747. Jesus

  748. said to

  749. them

  750. surely

  751. you will

  752. quote

  753. this

  754. proverb

  755. to me

  756. physician

  757. heal

  758. yourself.

  759. Do

  760. here in

  761. your

  762. hometown

  763. what we

  764. have

  765. heard

  766. that

  767. you

  768. did

  769. at

  770. Capernaum.

  771. Well you

  772. see they

  773. want a

  774. Messiah

  775. who are

  776. going to

  777. do miracles

  778. who's

  779. going to

  780. do miracles

  781. on demand

  782. and get

  783. people

  784. excited.

  785. You know

  786. all those

  787. healings

  788. you did

  789. over there

  790. do them

  791. here

  792. right now.

  793. they want

  794. Jesus to

  795. do spectacular

  796. things and

  797. get all the

  798. people excited

  799. so he has a

  800. big crowd

  801. following him.

  802. They want a

  803. king who at

  804. least looks

  805. like a

  806. king or

  807. sounds like

  808. a king

  809. and who's

  810. going to

  811. kind of

  812. march into

  813. Jerusalem

  814. and get

  815. rid of

  816. those dirty

  817. Romans who

  818. are taking

  819. our land

  820. and everything

  821. that we

  822. own.

  823. Who's

  824. going to

  825. follow a

  826. simple

  827. carpenter?

  828. verse 24

  829. I tell you

  830. the truth

  831. he continued

  832. no prophet

  833. is accepted

  834. in his

  835. hometown.

  836. It's a

  837. damning

  838. statement

  839. about their

  840. own hearts.

  841. Nobody likes

  842. anyone getting

  843. ahead of

  844. themselves.

  845. We certainly

  846. know that in

  847. our culture

  848. don't we?

  849. We don't

  850. like to

  851. congratulate

  852. people and

  853. say oh

  854. well done

  855. you know

  856. we like

  857. saying

  858. and that's

  859. what they're

  860. doing with

  861. Jesus.

  862. Who does

  863. he think

  864. he is

  865. coming into

  866. our

  867. synagogue

  868. claiming to

  869. be the

  870. Messiah.

  871. We want

  872. a real

  873. king not

  874. some

  875. upstart

  876. with

  877. nonsense

  878. ideas.

  879. Well if

  880. Jesus had

  881. shut up at

  882. this point

  883. and gotten

  884. the hint

  885. he would

  886. have just

  887. sat down

  888. and saved

  889. face and

  890. maybe would

  891. have kept

  892. a few

  893. friends.

  894. But no

  895. Jesus is

  896. on a

  897. mission.

  898. He can't

  899. stay silent.

  900. Knowing that

  901. rejection

  902. lay in

  903. their

  904. hearts

  905. Jesus

  906. shows them

  907. who he

  908. has come

  909. to welcome.

  910. Look at

  911. verse 25.

  912. I assure

  913. you

  914. Jesus

  915. says there

  916. were many

  917. widows in

  918. Israel.

  919. Israel

  920. God's

  921. land

  922. God's

  923. special

  924. people.

  925. There were

  926. many widows

  927. in Israel

  928. in Elijah's

  929. time

  930. God's

  931. prophet

  932. when the

  933. sky was

  934. shut for

  935. three and

  936. a half

  937. years so

  938. there was

  939. no rain

  940. and there

  941. was a

  942. severe famine

  943. throughout

  944. the land.

  945. Lots of

  946. poor widows

  947. who didn't

  948. have anything.

  949. Yet Elijah

  950. was not sent

  951. to any of

  952. them but

  953. to a widow

  954. in Zarephath

  955. in the

  956. region of

  957. Sidon.

  958. Elijah

  959. went to

  960. an outsider

  961. a foreigner

  962. of all

  963. the people

  964. who were

  965. local.

  966. He went

  967. off somewhere

  968. else.

  969. Verse 27

  970. And there

  971. were many

  972. in Israel

  973. God's

  974. land

  975. God's

  976. people

  977. with

  978. leprosy

  979. in the

  980. time of

  981. Elijah

  982. the prophet

  983. yet not

  984. one of

  985. them

  986. was

  987. cleansed.

  988. Only

  989. Naaman

  990. the Syrian

  991. who if we

  992. were to

  993. go back

  994. and read

  995. a bit

  996. about him

  997. was general

  998. of an

  999. army not

  1000. only was

  1001. he an

  1002. outsider he

  1003. was an

  1004. enemy.

  1005. He fought

  1006. battles against

  1007. God's

  1008. people.

  1009. So everybody

  1010. who's listening

  1011. to Jesus'

  1012. sermon expects

  1013. that Elijah

  1014. and Elisha

  1015. oh well they

  1016. were great

  1017. prophets surely

  1018. they would go

  1019. to God's

  1020. people Israel.

  1021. After all

  1022. they're God's

  1023. specially chosen

  1024. people.

  1025. They deserve

  1026. God's favour.

  1027. God is on

  1028. their side.

  1029. But to

  1030. their absolute

  1031. shock and

  1032. disgust

  1033. Elijah and

  1034. Elisha go

  1035. to the

  1036. outsider.

  1037. You see

  1038. the widow

  1039. and Naaman

  1040. become for

  1041. us a

  1042. picture or

  1043. an example

  1044. of the

  1045. oppressed

  1046. that Jesus

  1047. has come

  1048. to release.

  1049. They are

  1050. the poor

  1051. the prisoner

  1052. the blind

  1053. they are

  1054. the humble

  1055. in heart.

  1056. They are

  1057. the hopeless

  1058. and helpless.

  1059. They cannot

  1060. help themselves.

  1061. They are

  1062. dependent and

  1063. completely reliant

  1064. upon God's

  1065. grace to

  1066. intervene in

  1067. their lives.

  1068. The widow

  1069. is a

  1070. foreigner.

  1071. Naaman is

  1072. an enemy.

  1073. And Jesus

  1074. is saying to

  1075. the gathering

  1076. in the

  1077. synagogue

  1078. I am the

  1079. Messiah and

  1080. I have come

  1081. to welcome

  1082. those with

  1083. humble hearts.

  1084. I have come

  1085. to welcome

  1086. outsiders in.

  1087. not to

  1088. those who

  1089. think of

  1090. themselves as

  1091. morally

  1092. respectable.

  1093. Not to

  1094. those who

  1095. have it all

  1096. together.

  1097. Not to

  1098. those who

  1099. feel they are

  1100. deserving.

  1101. No I have

  1102. come to

  1103. those who

  1104. see their

  1105. need of

  1106. absolute

  1107. help.

  1108. Now that's

  1109. good news

  1110. for people

  1111. like us.

  1112. For Jesus

  1113. comes to

  1114. those who

  1115. know they

  1116. fail and

  1117. fall.

  1118. he comes

  1119. to those

  1120. who are

  1121. desperate and

  1122. weak and

  1123. cannot help

  1124. themselves.

  1125. Let's ask

  1126. ourselves some

  1127. questions.

  1128. Would you

  1129. describe yourself

  1130. as having a

  1131. hard heart

  1132. or a

  1133. humble heart?

  1134. Have you

  1135. experienced

  1136. grace?

  1137. or are you

  1138. like the

  1139. crowd in

  1140. the synagogue

  1141. pushing it

  1142. away?

  1143. You see

  1144. those with a

  1145. humble heart

  1146. don't push

  1147. people away

  1148. because they

  1149. keep on

  1150. failing.

  1151. They don't

  1152. reject those

  1153. whose sexual

  1154. identity is

  1155. maybe different

  1156. to yours.

  1157. they don't

  1158. write off

  1159. those who

  1160. have hurt

  1161. you in

  1162. the past.

  1163. They don't

  1164. look down

  1165. on those

  1166. who have a

  1167. different skin

  1168. colour to

  1169. you.

  1170. They don't

  1171. distance

  1172. themselves from

  1173. those whose

  1174. life is broken

  1175. and messy.

  1176. They give

  1177. grace

  1178. because God

  1179. has been

  1180. gracious to

  1181. them and

  1182. they have

  1183. come to

  1184. experience

  1185. and understand

  1186. that well

  1187. God has

  1188. cancelled all

  1189. of my sin

  1190. debt and

  1191. no longer

  1192. holds it

  1193. over me

  1194. or against

  1195. me.

  1196. They welcome

  1197. the outsider

  1198. because God

  1199. has welcomed

  1200. them.

  1201. Or look

  1202. at it this

  1203. way.

  1204. Those who

  1205. have a

  1206. hard heart

  1207. pride

  1208. themselves in

  1209. their own

  1210. ability to

  1211. do well

  1212. in life.

  1213. They judge

  1214. other people

  1215. by their

  1216. own standards

  1217. and expectations

  1218. and nod

  1219. disapprovingly.

  1220. They're not

  1221. like me.

  1222. They won't

  1223. help the

  1224. broken because

  1225. well those

  1226. people need

  1227. to learn to

  1228. help themselves

  1229. first.

  1230. They condemn

  1231. the sinners

  1232. to hell

  1233. because they

  1234. can't see

  1235. their own

  1236. sin in

  1237. their own

  1238. hearts.

  1239. They

  1240. withhold

  1241. grace from

  1242. others because

  1243. well actually

  1244. it's all

  1245. about you

  1246. deserve what

  1247. you get

  1248. in life.

  1249. They can't

  1250. welcome

  1251. others

  1252. because they've

  1253. never ever

  1254. experienced

  1255. God's welcome

  1256. in their own

  1257. lives.

  1258. God is

  1259. on the

  1260. move.

  1261. He is

  1262. on a

  1263. mission.

  1264. He is

  1265. offering

  1266. grace to

  1267. the

  1268. oppressed.

  1269. He

  1270. welcomes

  1271. the

  1272. outsider.

  1273. He

  1274. welcomes

  1275. people like

  1276. you and

  1277. me who

  1278. will only

  1279. admit that

  1280. I am

  1281. helpless and

  1282. hopeless.

  1283. I cannot

  1284. help myself.

  1285. I cannot

  1286. change my

  1287. life.

  1288. I need

  1289. you to

  1290. change me.

  1291. And in

  1292. response

  1293. we are

  1294. incorporated

  1295. into the

  1296. great mission

  1297. of God

  1298. as we

  1299. go

  1300. and offer

  1301. grace

  1302. to those

  1303. who cannot

  1304. help

  1305. themselves.

  1306. Welcoming

  1307. the outsider

  1308. showing

  1309. them the

  1310. grace

  1311. that none

  1312. of us

  1313. deserve.

  1314. let's

  1315. pray

  1316. together.

  1317. Let's

  1318. pray together.

  1319. Father, we

  1320. are astonished

  1321. and amazed

  1322. at your

  1323. grace

  1324. towards us

  1325. that you

  1326. would reach

  1327. down even

  1328. though we

  1329. have

  1330. pushed you

  1331. away.

  1332. Thank you

  1333. that you

  1334. do not

  1335. treat us

  1336. as our

  1337. sins

  1338. deserve.

  1339. Thank you

  1340. that you

  1341. do not

  1342. look down

  1343. upon us

  1344. and say

  1345. help

  1346. yourself.

  1347. thank you

  1348. that you

  1349. have come

  1350. to help

  1351. us

  1352. through your

  1353. son the

  1354. Lord Jesus

  1355. and have

  1356. given us

  1357. a way

  1358. to life

  1359. and a

  1360. way to

  1361. be changed.

  1362. Father,

  1363. help us

  1364. that we

  1365. would have

  1366. humble

  1367. hearts

  1368. and any

  1369. hardness

  1370. of heart

  1371. that you

  1372. would deal

  1373. with by

  1374. your grace

  1375. right now.

  1376. Change us

  1377. so that we

  1378. become

  1379. welcomers

  1380. of all

  1381. who are in

  1382. need of

  1383. you.

  1384. We pray

  1385. this in

  1386. Jesus'

  1387. name.

  1388. Amen.
