  1. So Luke chapter 5, which is on page 1032, Luke chapter 5, starting at verse 1.

Luke 5 chapter mention Luke 5 chapter mention

  2. One day, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, which was also known as the lake of Galilee,

  3. with the people crowding round him and listening to the word of God,

  4. he saw at the water's edge two boats left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.

  5. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore.

  6. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

  7. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,

  8. Put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch.

  9. Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything.

  10. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.

  11. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

  12. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.

  13. And they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

  14. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said,

  15. Go away from me, Lord.

  16. I am a sinful man.

  17. For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken.

  18. And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners.

  19. Then Jesus said to Simon, Don't be afraid.

  20. From now on you will fish for men.

  21. So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

  22. While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.

  23. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him,

  24. Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.

  25. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.

  26. I am willing, he said, be clean.

  27. And immediately the leprosy left him.

  28. Then Jesus ordered him, Don't tell anyone,

  29. but go show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded

  30. for your cleansing as a testimony to them.

  31. Yet the news spread about him, spread all the more,

  32. so that crowds of people came to hear him

  33. and to be healed of their sicknesses.

  34. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

  35. One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law

  36. who had come from every village in Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem

  37. were sitting there.

  38. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.

  39. Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat

  40. and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.

  41. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd,

  42. they went up onto the roof and lowered him on his mat

  43. through the tiles into the middle of the crowd

  44. right in front of Jesus.

  45. When Jesus saw their faith, he said,

  46. Friend, your sins are forgiven.

  47. The Pharisees and teachers of the law began thinking to themselves,

  48. Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy?

  49. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  50. Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked,

  51. Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?

  52. Which is easier to say,

  53. Your sins are forgiven?

  54. Or to say,

  55. Get up and walk.

  56. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,

  57. he said to the paralysed man,

  58. I tell you,

  59. Get up, take your mat and go home.

  60. Immediately he stood up in front of them,

  61. took what he had been lying on,

  62. and went home praising God.

  63. Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.

  64. They were filled with awe and said,

  65. We have seen remarkable things today.

  66. After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth.

  67. Follow me, Jesus said to him.

  68. And Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.

  69. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house,

  70. and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.

  71. But the Pharisees and teachers of the law who belonged to their sect

  72. complained to his disciples,

  73. Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?

  74. Jesus answered them,

  75. It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

  76. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  77. Well, let's keep that open before us.

  78. Amazing, incredible encounters with Jesus Christ.

  79. Let's pray before we look at it together.

  80. Our Father God, we marvel and wonder

  81. at these people who met Jesus.

  82. And it is our prayer

  83. that we would meet and encounter Jesus afresh today

  84. through your word.

  85. That the pictures and the understandings that we might have,

  86. we would surrender them to you afresh.

  87. And that you would paint before us

  88. a portrait of Jesus.

  89. That we would see him as he really is.

  90. And we would understand his work

  91. and his calling.

  92. And that we too

  93. would leave everything

  94. and follow him.

  95. Help us, we pray.

  96. In Jesus' name.

  97. Amen.

  98. The Apprentice,

  99. that TV show,

  100. is best known for the catchphrase

  101. you're fired.

  102. You're fired.

  103. The host, Lord Shuker,

  104. looks to select various business partners

  105. from about 20 candidates

  106. and only the best person

  107. is chosen.

  108. The people that are there,

  109. well, they're all very successful,

  110. very talented,

  111. confident, popular,

  112. and they all appear very good looking.

  113. And out of this group,

  114. Lord Shuker,

  115. must select one person

  116. to be his partner.

  117. And if you show any sign of weakness,

  118. failure,

  119. or incompetence,

  120. you're fired.

  121. You're out of the game.

  122. Well, that's how life works,

  123. doesn't it?

  124. If you're clever and talented

  125. and popular,

  126. well, you get to go places.

  127. But if you live with some kind of impediment

  128. or you can't quite hold things together

  129. and you struggle to fit in

  130. and you've got this label,

  131. outsider,

  132. well, then you get ignored

  133. and overlooked.

  134. You're fired.

  135. Only the best

  136. are chosen.

  137. Well, it seems that in the kingdom of God,

  138. it's only those

  139. who know they are weak

  140. and only those

  141. who know they fail

  142. who do get hired.

  143. Look what Jesus says

  144. in verse 31.

  145. It is not the healthy

  146. who need a doctor,

  147. but the sick.

  148. I have not come to call

  149. the righteous,

  150. those who think they are good,

  151. but sinners to repentance,

  152. those who know they fail

  153. and mess up.

  154. Chapter 4,

  155. Jesus had just identified himself

  156. to be God's chosen king.

  157. Remember,

  158. as he read from the prophet Isaiah,

  159. the spirit of the Lord

  160. is upon me

  161. to proclaim the year

  162. of the Lord's favour,

  163. to bring grace

  164. to the world.

  165. And Jesus stood up

  166. and he said,

  167. I am the Messiah.

  168. I am the one

  169. who has come

  170. to bring favour

  171. to people.

  172. And as he begins

  173. his public ministry,

  174. as he goes out

  175. meeting people,

  176. Jesus is seeking

  177. mission partners.

  178. calling people

  179. to be with him.

  180. First,

  181. the outsider sinner.

  182. So as we march

  183. into chapter 5,

  184. we are introduced

  185. to a number

  186. of different kinds

  187. of people,

  188. all who encounter Jesus.

  189. And they all have

  190. something in common.

  191. I wondered if you noticed it

  192. as we read through.

  193. They are all outsiders.

  194. First,

  195. we are introduced

  196. to the leper.

  197. If you look in verse 12,

  198. while Jesus was in

  199. one of the towns,

  200. a man came along

  201. who was covered

  202. with leprosy.

  203. Now,

  204. it could be any kind

  205. of skin disease.

  206. It could be leprosy

  207. or it could be something

  208. even as basic

  209. as ringworm.

  210. And people

  211. who had

  212. the skin disease

  213. like leprosy

  214. were considered

  215. a danger

  216. to society.

  217. If you had

  218. a skin disease,

  219. well,

  220. you were contagious

  221. and you were

  222. considered ritually

  223. or ceremonially

  224. unclean.

  225. That meant

  226. you couldn't go

  227. to the temple

  228. to worship God.

  229. You were barred.

  230. You weren't allowed

  231. in there.

  232. You weren't even

  233. allowed into

  234. the local synagogue.

  235. You weren't even

  236. allowed in the

  237. marketplace

  238. where everybody

  239. gathered.

  240. So long as you

  241. had a skin disease,

  242. you were on

  243. the outside.

  244. God was

  245. off limits.

  246. You were

  247. an outsider.

  248. And then we meet

  249. the paralytic.

  250. Verse 17.

  251. One day,

  252. as Jesus was

  253. teaching,

  254. Pharisees and

  255. teachers of the law

  256. who had come

  257. from every

  258. village,

  259. so obviously

  260. news about

  261. Jesus was

  262. spreading and

  263. they were

  264. coming from

  265. Judea and

  266. Jerusalem and

  267. were sitting

  268. there and

  269. the power of

  270. the Lord was

  271. present for him

  272. to heal the

  273. sick.

  274. Some men

  275. came carrying

  276. a paralytic,

  277. a man who

  278. couldn't walk,

  279. and tried to

  280. take him into

  281. the house to

  282. lay him before

  283. Jesus.

  284. Now,

  285. literally,

  286. this guy,

  287. we don't even

  288. know his name.

  289. He's on the

  290. outside.

  291. He can't

  292. get near to

  293. Jesus.

  294. He can't

  295. walk.

  296. The crowd is

  297. too big and

  298. no one is

  299. making room for

  300. him to get

  301. in.

  302. In fact,

  303. the religious

  304. leaders who

  305. are in the

  306. inside,

  307. who are all

  308. able-bodied,

  309. have taken up

  310. the best of

  311. seats.

  312. And he and

  313. his friends are

  314. left on the

  315. outside.

  316. And then we

  317. meet Levi,

  318. don't we,

  319. in verse 27.

  320. After this,

  321. Jesus went

  322. out and saw

  323. a tax

  324. collector by

  325. the name of

  326. Levi,

  327. sitting at

  328. his tax

  329. booth.

  330. Levi, of

  331. course, is

  332. also known

  333. as Matthew,

  334. who would

  335. later write

  336. Matthew's

  337. gospel.

  338. But for

  339. now, we

  340. see him

  341. here as

  342. Levi, and

  343. he's a tax

  344. collector.

  345. And they

  346. were the

  347. worst of

  348. the worst.

  349. They were

  350. scum.

  351. As a tax

  352. collector,

  353. Levi worked

  354. for the

  355. enemy, the

  356. occupying

  357. Roman

  358. authorities.

  359. They acted

  360. as informants,

  361. traitors of

  362. their very

  363. own people.

  364. And to

  365. make matters

  366. worse, not

  367. only would

  368. they charge

  369. a certain

  370. amount of

  371. tax, but

  372. they would

  373. always add

  374. on a little

  375. bit extra

  376. and keep

  377. it for

  378. themselves.

  379. Levi was

  380. not just

  381. on the

  382. outside.

  383. Outsiders

  384. considered

  385. tax collectors

  386. on the

  387. outside of

  388. them.

  389. So here

  390. we're

  391. introduced to

  392. all these

  393. outsiders, but

  394. there's one

  395. more.

  396. We met

  397. him at the

  398. very beginning

  399. in verse

  400. four.

  401. When Jesus

  402. had finished

  403. speaking, he

  404. said to

  405. Simon,

  406. Simon of

  407. course would

  408. become

  409. Peter.

  410. He

  411. says, put

  412. out into

  413. deep and

  414. let down

  415. the nets

  416. for a

  417. catch.

  418. Simon

  419. answered,

  420. Master,

  421. we've

  422. worked hard

  423. all night

  424. and haven't

  425. caught

  426. anything, but

  427. because you

  428. say so, I

  429. will let

  430. down the

  431. nets.

  432. Fishing was

  433. always done

  434. in the

  435. evening time

  436. when the

  437. sun was

  438. down.

  439. That was

  440. the best

  441. time to

  442. go fishing.

  443. Here they

  444. are having

  445. fished all

  446. night.

  447. And then

  448. Jesus, a

  449. carpenter, I

  450. mean, what

  451. does he

  452. know about

  453. fishing?

  454. Let down

  455. your nets.

  456. When they

  457. had done

  458. so, verse

  459. six, they

  460. caught such

  461. a large

  462. number of

  463. fish that

  464. their nets

  465. began to

  466. break.

  467. So they

  468. signaled to

  469. the partners

  470. in the

  471. other boat

  472. to come

  473. and help.

  474. And they

  475. filled the

  476. boat so

  477. full that

  478. they began

  479. to sink.

  480. Now you

  481. picture yourself

  482. as Simon

  483. the fisherman,

  484. a tough

  485. job.

  486. you've

  487. worked hard

  488. all night.

  489. You're not

  490. going to get

  491. any pay

  492. because you've

  493. got no

  494. fish.

  495. In fact,

  496. it would be

  497. quite common

  498. to go for

  499. days, even

  500. weeks, with

  501. no money

  502. at all because

  503. you catch

  504. no fish.

  505. And then

  506. all of a

  507. sudden, your

  508. boat, and

  509. not just your

  510. boat, but

  511. your mate's

  512. boat, is

  513. full with

  514. the weight

  515. of fish.

  516. They're

  517. falling out

  518. over the

  519. sides.

  520. Ching,

  521. ching.

  522. You can

  523. see the

  524. dollar

  525. signs flash

  526. or whatever

  527. currency they

  528. used, I

  529. don't know,

  530. in Simon's

  531. eyes.

  532. I'm rich.

  533. Look at all

  534. this money.

  535. Look at what

  536. we're going

  537. to make when

  538. we go down

  539. to the

  540. market today.

  541. But that's

  542. not how he

  543. responds, is

  544. it?

  545. Look at

  546. verse 8.

  547. When Simon

  548. Peter saw

  549. this, he

  550. fell at

  551. Jesus'

  552. knees and

  553. said,

  554. go away

  555. from me,

  556. Lord.

  557. I am a

  558. sinful man.

  559. You see,

  560. encounters

  561. with Jesus

  562. is an

  563. encounter

  564. with the

  565. living God.

  566. Because

  567. only God

  568. could make

  569. fish swim

  570. into your

  571. net at a

  572. time of the

  573. day when

  574. you don't

  575. catch fish.

  576. fish.

  577. For Simon,

  578. as he was

  579. just about

  580. his business

  581. washing his

  582. nets, he

  583. is confronted

  584. with the

  585. power and

  586. the purity

  587. of the

  588. Creator

  589. Almighty

  590. God.

  591. And knowing

  592. what God

  593. is like,

  594. that God

  595. is perfect

  596. and pure,

  597. and that you

  598. cannot even

  599. look upon

  600. God without

  601. being struck

  602. down.

  603. And knowing

  604. what Peter

  605. is like,

  606. what Simon

  607. is like,

  608. that he's

  609. weak and

  610. failing,

  611. that he has

  612. been confronted

  613. with the

  614. living God,

  615. he falls

  616. down on

  617. his knees.

  618. He can't

  619. even bear

  620. to look.

  621. Go away

  622. from me,

  623. Lord.

  624. I am a

  625. sinful man.

  626. I can't

  627. be with you,

  628. Jesus.

  629. I am not

  630. worthy.

  631. I am a

  632. broken,

  633. sinful mess.

  634. I can't

  635. come near.

  636. I am an

  637. outsider.

  638. You see,

  639. when we

  640. truly grasp

  641. and understand

  642. who Jesus

  643. is,

  644. and as

  645. Luke

  646. orders his

  647. material in

  648. such a way

  649. that we begin

  650. to meet him

  651. and hear his

  652. words and

  653. see what he

  654. does,

  655. we realise

  656. that when

  657. confronted with

  658. Jesus,

  659. us,

  660. we are

  661. all

  662. outsiders.

  663. To other

  664. people we

  665. might appear

  666. to be

  667. successful

  668. and popular

  669. and confident

  670. and live in a

  671. certain place

  672. and have a

  673. great job

  674. and we

  675. might appear

  676. to have it

  677. all together

  678. and that we're

  679. morally good

  680. and religious

  681. and life

  682. goes well

  683. but an

  684. encounter

  685. with the

  686. God-man

  687. Jesus

  688. Christ.

  689. Hearing his

  690. words,

  691. seeing what

  692. he does,

  693. we see that

  694. we are not

  695. like him

  696. at all,

  697. but that he

  698. is powerful

  699. and he

  700. is pure

  701. and we

  702. are not

  703. good enough

  704. for him.

  705. We are

  706. all on

  707. the outside.

  708. We are

  709. all sinners

  710. just like

  711. Simon,

  712. just like

  713. Levi,

  714. just like

  715. the man

  716. who is

  717. lame

  718. and just

  719. like the

  720. leper.

  721. How

  722. would

  723. Jesus

  724. respond?

  725. Get away

  726. from me

  727. Simon,

  728. you dirty

  729. rotten

  730. sinner.

  731. Stay away

  732. from me.

  733. I don't

  734. want to

  735. have

  736. anything

  737. to do

  738. with

  739. you.

  740. Amazing

  741. grace.

  742. Look at

  743. verse 10,

  744. the second

  745. part of

  746. verse 10.

  747. Then Jesus

  748. said to

  749. Simon,

  750. don't

  751. be

  752. afraid.

  753. Don't

  754. be afraid.

  755. Peter

  756. knew his

  757. old

  758. testament

  759. that when

  760. people

  761. met

  762. God,

  763. they fell

  764. down

  765. dead.

  766. Don't

  767. be afraid.

  768. From

  769. now on,

  770. you will

  771. catch men

  772. or literally

  773. you will

  774. fish for

  775. people.

  776. So they

  777. pulled up

  778. their boats

  779. and shore

  780. left everything

  781. and followed.

  782. Simon

  783. is a

  784. sinner.

  785. And Jesus

  786. knows what

  787. Simon is

  788. like.

  789. And Jesus

  790. knows what

  791. I am

  792. like and

  793. what you

  794. are like.

  795. And we

  796. can come

  797. here and

  798. we can

  799. have masks

  800. on and

  801. we can

  802. hide the

  803. things that

  804. are deep

  805. down in

  806. our hearts.

  807. But Jesus

  808. knows exactly

  809. what we

  810. are like.

  811. But when

  812. he sees

  813. Simon,

  814. he sees

  815. not just

  816. confession,

  817. I am a

  818. sinner.

  819. He sees

  820. one who

  821. is humble

  822. and completely

  823. dependent on

  824. God.

  825. Look again

  826. at what he

  827. says in

  828. verse 8.

  829. He fell

  830. at Jesus'

  831. knees and

  832. says,

  833. go away

  834. from me,

  835. Lord,

  836. I am a

  837. sinful man.

  838. Simon is

  839. dependent.

  840. As he

  841. falls on

  842. his knees,

  843. he is

  844. looking for

  845. mercy and

  846. grace.

  847. And grace

  848. and mercy

  849. he receives

  850. from an

  851. outsider to

  852. an insider,

  853. from catching

  854. fish to

  855. now fishing

  856. for people.

  857. His whole

  858. life in an

  859. instance has

  860. been changed

  861. and transformed.

  862. He's not

  863. fired.

  864. He's hired.

  865. Jesus is

  866. saying to

  867. Simon,

  868. I want

  869. you now

  870. to tell

  871. people about

  872. me.

  873. Tell them

  874. about the

  875. grace and

  876. the mercy

  877. that you

  878. have received.

  879. Treat people

  880. as I have

  881. just treated

  882. you.

  883. You see,

  884. Jesus calls

  885. outsiders to

  886. follow him

  887. and to

  888. join him

  889. in his

  890. great mission

  891. of welcoming

  892. outsiders so

  893. that they

  894. too can go

  895. and welcome

  896. others.

  897. Well,

  898. how is

  899. Jesus going

  900. to do

  901. that?

  902. How does

  903. he just

  904. suddenly see

  905. Simon in

  906. one way and

  907. then say,

  908. listen Simon,

  909. it's okay,

  910. you can come

  911. and catch

  912. people now?

  913. Well,

  914. I think the

  915. following stories

  916. illustrate what

  917. actually is

  918. going on in

  919. Simon's life.

  920. First,

  921. cleaned.

  922. if we look

  923. at the story

  924. in verse 12

  925. of the leper,

  926. we saw that

  927. he is an

  928. outsider.

  929. He is

  930. unclean.

  931. Now,

  932. if you were

  933. to touch

  934. someone or

  935. to come

  936. into contact

  937. with someone

  938. with a skin

  939. disease,

  940. well,

  941. then you

  942. became

  943. contaminated.

  944. So,

  945. just even

  946. sitting within

  947. their vicinity,

  948. the law

  949. said,

  950. well,

  951. you've now

  952. become

  953. unclean.

  954. In other

  955. words,

  956. you are now

  957. an outsider

  958. as well.

  959. The law

  960. was very,

  961. very clear

  962. to those

  963. who had

  964. a skin

  965. disease.

  966. This comes

  967. from Leviticus

  968. 13.

  969. The law

  970. said,

  971. anyone with

  972. such a

  973. defiling disease

  974. must wear

  975. torn clothes,

  976. let their

  977. hair be

  978. unkept,

  979. cover the

  980. lower part

  981. of their

  982. face and

  983. cry out,

  984. unclean,

  985. unclean.

  986. As long

  987. as they

  988. have the

  989. disease,

  990. they remain

  991. unclean.

  992. they must

  993. live alone.

  994. They must

  995. live outside

  996. the camp.

  997. So,

  998. you see,

  999. you had

  1000. to be

  1001. very,

  1002. very careful

  1003. about coming

  1004. into contact

  1005. with a

  1006. leper.

  1007. If you

  1008. saw one,

  1009. you ran

  1010. the other

  1011. way.

  1012. You avoided

  1013. them at

  1014. all costs.

  1015. Well,

  1016. look at the

  1017. middle of

  1018. verse 12.

  1019. When this

  1020. leper saw

  1021. Jesus,

  1022. he fell

  1023. with his

  1024. face to

  1025. the ground

  1026. and begged

  1027. him,

  1028. Lord,

  1029. if you

  1030. are willing,

  1031. you can

  1032. make me

  1033. clean.

  1034. Well,

  1035. what would

  1036. Jesus do?

  1037. To be

  1038. near a

  1039. leper runs

  1040. the risk

  1041. of being

  1042. contaminated,

  1043. becoming

  1044. unclean.

  1045. To engage

  1046. with this

  1047. leper means,

  1048. well,

  1049. other people

  1050. would see

  1051. you and

  1052. you could

  1053. become

  1054. ostracised

  1055. and pushed

  1056. to the

  1057. outside and

  1058. you would

  1059. be treated

  1060. like him.

  1061. Jesus,

  1062. amidst the

  1063. crowds,

  1064. reached out

  1065. his hand

  1066. and touched

  1067. the man.

  1068. I am

  1069. willing,

  1070. he said.

  1071. Be

  1072. clean.

  1073. And

  1074. immediately

  1075. the leprosy

  1076. left him.

  1077. I mean,

  1078. the miracle

  1079. is incredible.

  1080. Something

  1081. extraordinary

  1082. has just

  1083. happened.

  1084. Instead of

  1085. Jesus being

  1086. the one who

  1087. becomes

  1088. unclean,

  1089. it goes

  1090. into reverse.

  1091. The leper

  1092. becomes

  1093. clean.

  1094. Everybody

  1095. else the

  1096. leper had

  1097. touched,

  1098. they became

  1099. unclean.

  1100. But now

  1101. as Jesus

  1102. reaches out

  1103. and touches

  1104. him,

  1105. Jesus doesn't

  1106. become unclean,

  1107. but the leper

  1108. does become

  1109. clean.

  1110. Instead of

  1111. his uncleanliness

  1112. being passed

  1113. on to Jesus,

  1114. Jesus'

  1115. cleanliness

  1116. is passed

  1117. on to him.

  1118. And by

  1119. a simple

  1120. word of

  1121. command,

  1122. be clean,

  1123. the leper

  1124. has his

  1125. life

  1126. restored.

  1127. He's no

  1128. longer an

  1129. outsider.

  1130. He now

  1131. can walk

  1132. into the

  1133. marketplace,

  1134. he can

  1135. now go

  1136. to the

  1137. temple,

  1138. that's why

  1139. Jesus said

  1140. to him

  1141. in verse

  1142. 14,

  1143. go show

  1144. yourself

  1145. to the

  1146. priest,

  1147. go show

  1148. them that

  1149. you're

  1150. clean and

  1151. that you

  1152. can go

  1153. and worship

  1154. God.

  1155. It's

  1156. just a

  1157. brilliant

  1158. picture.

  1159. of the

  1160. compassion

  1161. and love

  1162. of God

  1163. towards

  1164. people like

  1165. you and

  1166. me,

  1167. of God

  1168. reaching down

  1169. and touching

  1170. unclean

  1171. people like

  1172. us.

  1173. And through

  1174. Jesus,

  1175. our uncleanliness,

  1176. all our

  1177. impurity,

  1178. all our

  1179. sin is

  1180. removed,

  1181. and we

  1182. instead are

  1183. covered with

  1184. his purity.

  1185. So that

  1186. people like

  1187. you and I

  1188. can come

  1189. and stand

  1190. in the

  1191. presence of

  1192. God.

  1193. Jesus has

  1194. come to

  1195. clean us

  1196. so that

  1197. we can

  1198. be welcomed

  1199. into his

  1200. mission.

  1201. But not

  1202. just

  1203. cleaned,

  1204. forgiven.

  1205. Remember the

  1206. lame man?

  1207. we left

  1208. him in

  1209. verse 18

  1210. on the

  1211. outside.

  1212. Verse 19,

  1213. when they

  1214. could not

  1215. find a

  1216. way to

  1217. do this,

  1218. that was

  1219. to get

  1220. to Jesus

  1221. because of

  1222. the crowd.

  1223. Well,

  1224. they went

  1225. up onto

  1226. the roof,

  1227. which would

  1228. have been

  1229. flat roofs,

  1230. and they

  1231. lowered him

  1232. on his

  1233. mat through

  1234. the tiles,

  1235. easy to

  1236. take apart

  1237. and drop

  1238. somebody

  1239. down,

  1240. into the

  1241. middle of

  1242. the crowd,

  1243. right in

  1244. front of

  1245. Jesus.

  1246. Now he's

  1247. on the

  1248. inside,

  1249. right in

  1250. front of

  1251. Jesus.

  1252. Now Jesus

  1253. can heal

  1254. him and

  1255. make him

  1256. walk.

  1257. walk.

  1258. But what

  1259. does Jesus

  1260. say,

  1261. verse 20,

  1262. when Jesus

  1263. saw their

  1264. faith,

  1265. their

  1266. dependence,

  1267. their

  1268. humility,

  1269. he said,

  1270. friend,

  1271. your sins

  1272. are forgiven.

  1273. Well,

  1274. this guy,

  1275. he can't

  1276. walk and

  1277. he wants

  1278. Jesus to

  1279. make him

  1280. walk again.

  1281. That's why

  1282. he's there.

  1283. But Jesus

  1284. sees past

  1285. the physical

  1286. and he

  1287. sees the

  1288. heart and

  1289. he sees

  1290. the life

  1291. and he

  1292. sees a

  1293. greater need

  1294. for this

  1295. man.

  1296. The need

  1297. to be

  1298. forgiven,

  1299. yes,

  1300. physically

  1301. he's on

  1302. the inside,

  1303. he's right

  1304. in front

  1305. of Jesus,

  1306. but he

  1307. needs to

  1308. be brought

  1309. to the

  1310. inside.

  1311. He needs

  1312. to be

  1313. made clean.

  1314. He needs

  1315. to be

  1316. forgiven.

  1317. You see,

  1318. unless we

  1319. experience

  1320. forgiveness,

  1321. we remain

  1322. on the

  1323. outside.

  1324. Without

  1325. being made

  1326. clean,

  1327. we cannot

  1328. be part

  1329. of his

  1330. mission.

  1331. Verse 21,

  1332. the Pharisees

  1333. and the

  1334. teachers

  1335. of the

  1336. law

  1337. began

  1338. thinking

  1339. to

  1340. themselves,

  1341. who is

  1342. this

  1343. fellow

  1344. who

  1345. speaks

  1346. blasphemy?

  1347. Who does

  1348. he think

  1349. he is?

  1350. Who can

  1351. forgive sins

  1352. but God

  1353. alone?

  1354. Jesus'

  1355. claim to

  1356. forgive sins

  1357. is sending

  1358. out another

  1359. clear message.

  1360. I am

  1361. God.

  1362. I have

  1363. the authority

  1364. to forgive

  1365. to forgive

  1366. your sins.

  1367. Yes,

  1368. only God

  1369. can forgive

  1370. sins,

  1371. but don't

  1372. you realise

  1373. who I

  1374. am?

  1375. I can

  1376. forgive

  1377. your sins

  1378. and I

  1379. can wipe

  1380. the slate

  1381. clean

  1382. and give

  1383. you a

  1384. fresh start

  1385. so that

  1386. your sins,

  1387. past,

  1388. present and

  1389. future,

  1390. are remembered

  1391. no more,

  1392. no longer

  1393. held against

  1394. you.

  1395. And to

  1396. prove it,

  1397. look at

  1398. verse 23,

  1399. Jesus says

  1400. to them,

  1401. which is

  1402. easier to

  1403. say,

  1404. your sins

  1405. are forgiven

  1406. or to

  1407. say,

  1408. get up

  1409. and walk?

  1410. Well,

  1411. it's easy

  1412. to say,

  1413. your sins

  1414. are forgiven.

  1415. I mean,

  1416. I could say

  1417. that to

  1418. any one of

  1419. you.

  1420. I could

  1421. say,

  1422. your sins

  1423. are forgiven,

  1424. your sins

  1425. are forgiven.

  1426. How do

  1427. you know

  1428. if your sins

  1429. are forgiven?

  1430. How do

  1431. you prove

  1432. it or

  1433. disprove

  1434. it?

  1435. Anybody

  1436. can say,

  1437. your sins

  1438. are forgiven.

  1439. It's much

  1440. harder to

  1441. say,

  1442. get up

  1443. and walk

  1444. because it

  1445. must be

  1446. proven by

  1447. that person

  1448. getting up

  1449. and walking.

  1450. Verse

  1451. 24,

  1452. but so

  1453. that you

  1454. may know

  1455. that the

  1456. Son of

  1457. Man

  1458. has

  1459. authority

  1460. on earth

  1461. to forgive

  1462. sins,

  1463. He said

  1464. to the

  1465. paralyzed

  1466. man,

  1467. I tell

  1468. you,

  1469. get up,

  1470. take your

  1471. mat and

  1472. go home.

  1473. Jesus

  1474. heals

  1475. the man

  1476. physically

  1477. to prove

  1478. he can

  1479. forgive sins

  1480. spiritually.

  1481. He does

  1482. a greater

  1483. work,

  1484. more than

  1485. this guy

  1486. ever thought

  1487. or imagined.

  1488. he takes

  1489. him from

  1490. the outside

  1491. and brings

  1492. him into

  1493. the inside.

  1494. And unless

  1495. we have

  1496. come to

  1497. experience

  1498. this forgiveness

  1499. from God,

  1500. we remain

  1501. on the

  1502. outside.

  1503. And the

  1504. point is

  1505. clear,

  1506. it's only

  1507. when we're

  1508. forgiven

  1509. and cleaned

  1510. that we can

  1511. be part of

  1512. his mission.

  1513. because

  1514. his purpose

  1515. is to

  1516. call us

  1517. to his

  1518. mission.

  1519. Look at

  1520. the story

  1521. of Levi.

  1522. The

  1523. encounter

  1524. with Jesus

  1525. is just

  1526. stunning.

  1527. It's a

  1528. brilliant

  1529. little story.

  1530. Verse 27,

  1531. after this

  1532. Jesus went

  1533. out and

  1534. he saw

  1535. a tax

  1536. collector

  1537. by the

  1538. name of

  1539. Levi

  1540. sitting at

  1541. his tax

  1542. booth.

  1543. Follow

  1544. me,

  1545. Jesus

  1546. said to

  1547. him.

  1548. And

  1549. Levi

  1550. got up,

  1551. left

  1552. everything

  1553. and

  1554. followed

  1555. him.

  1556. It's

  1557. astounding.

  1558. Tax

  1559. collectors

  1560. are

  1561. outsiders

  1562. and

  1563. they

  1564. should

  1565. stay

  1566. outsiders.

  1567. They're

  1568. meant to

  1569. be

  1570. condemned,

  1571. not

  1572. welcomed.

  1573. But

  1574. these are

  1575. the people

  1576. that Jesus

  1577. calls.

  1578. He

  1579. cleans

  1580. them,

  1581. he

  1582. forgives

  1583. them,

  1584. and he

  1585. says,

  1586. follow

  1587. me.

  1588. Verse 28,

  1589. and Levi

  1590. got up,

  1591. left

  1592. everything,

  1593. and

  1594. followed

  1595. him.

  1596. Well,

  1597. Simon's

  1598. response was

  1599. pretty much

  1600. the same,

  1601. wasn't it?

  1602. Verse 11,

  1603. they pulled

  1604. their boats

  1605. up on

  1606. shore,

  1607. left

  1608. everything,

  1609. and

  1610. followed

  1611. him.

  1612. Now,

  1613. we know

  1614. that Simon,

  1615. as we read

  1616. through the

  1617. Gospels,

  1618. that he did

  1619. continue to

  1620. fish.

  1621. and it's

  1622. very possible

  1623. that Levi

  1624. continued to

  1625. be a tax

  1626. collector,

  1627. although

  1628. an honest

  1629. one.

  1630. So,

  1631. what does

  1632. it mean

  1633. that they

  1634. left

  1635. everything

  1636. and

  1637. followed

  1638. him?

  1639. Well,

  1640. in following

  1641. Jesus and

  1642. leaving

  1643. everything,

  1644. it's the

  1645. same call

  1646. that goes

  1647. out to

  1648. us.

  1649. Jesus is

  1650. saying,

  1651. look,

  1652. your

  1653. priorities

  1654. in life

  1655. have now

  1656. changed.

  1657. I am

  1658. your

  1659. priority.

  1660. Their

  1661. whole

  1662. life was

  1663. now

  1664. reorientated

  1665. around the

  1666. mission and

  1667. the plan of

  1668. Jesus,

  1669. who was to

  1670. call people

  1671. into his

  1672. mission.

  1673. Jesus has

  1674. become central.

  1675. Their life

  1676. was all about

  1677. now serving

  1678. his purpose,

  1679. whether they

  1680. were fishing

  1681. or tax

  1682. collecting or

  1683. whatever they

  1684. did,

  1685. their mission

  1686. was about

  1687. serving his

  1688. purpose.

  1689. Jesus was

  1690. now their

  1691. Lord.

  1692. God

  1693. that is

  1694. what and

  1695. how Jesus

  1696. was referred

  1697. to, a

  1698. title that

  1699. was reserved

  1700. for God

  1701. alone.

  1702. In other

  1703. words, there

  1704. is no longer

  1705. any I

  1706. or me.

  1707. It's no

  1708. longer what

  1709. I want or

  1710. what I want

  1711. to do.

  1712. But what

  1713. does God

  1714. say in

  1715. his word

  1716. and what

  1717. should I

  1718. obey?

  1719. He is my

  1720. master.

  1721. I must

  1722. follow

  1723. him.

  1724. And that's

  1725. the call

  1726. of Jesus

  1727. when he

  1728. cleans us

  1729. and forgives

  1730. us.

  1731. He is

  1732. calling

  1733. outsiders

  1734. like you

  1735. and me

  1736. to follow

  1737. him and

  1738. to join

  1739. him in

  1740. his mission

  1741. of welcoming

  1742. outsiders.

  1743. So third,

  1744. outsider

  1745. sinners

  1746. welcome

  1747. others.

  1748. Levi

  1749. immediately

  1750. understands

  1751. that because

  1752. he has

  1753. been

  1754. welcomed,

  1755. brought

  1756. from the

  1757. outside to

  1758. the inside

  1759. by Jesus,

  1760. he now

  1761. welcomes

  1762. other people.

  1763. Look at his

  1764. response,

  1765. verse 29.

  1766. Then Levi

  1767. held a

  1768. great banquet,

  1769. this massive

  1770. party in his

  1771. house,

  1772. for Jesus

  1773. and a large

  1774. crowd of the

  1775. tax collectors

  1776. and others

  1777. were eating

  1778. them.

  1779. Levi

  1780. sends out

  1781. an invite

  1782. to all his

  1783. other tax

  1784. collector

  1785. friends.

  1786. all the

  1787. other

  1788. outsiders.

  1789. He says,

  1790. come to

  1791. my house,

  1792. come and

  1793. have a

  1794. party.

  1795. Because he

  1796. wants them

  1797. to meet

  1798. Jesus.

  1799. He wants

  1800. them to

  1801. experience

  1802. what it

  1803. is to

  1804. be cleaned

  1805. and forgiven

  1806. and called.

  1807. And here

  1808. we see

  1809. mission at

  1810. its simplest

  1811. but at

  1812. its best.

  1813. Sitting

  1814. down with

  1815. his friends,

  1816. eating and

  1817. drinking and

  1818. talking about

  1819. what Jesus

  1820. has done

  1821. in your

  1822. life.

  1823. But not

  1824. everyone is

  1825. happy.

  1826. Verse 30.

  1827. The Pharisees

  1828. and the

  1829. teachers of

  1830. the law

  1831. who belong

  1832. to their

  1833. sect,

  1834. remember they've

  1835. come from all

  1836. over the

  1837. places.

  1838. We read that

  1839. in verse 17,

  1840. wanting to

  1841. know who

  1842. this Jesus

  1843. is.

  1844. faith.

  1845. And they

  1846. complained to

  1847. the disciples,

  1848. why do you

  1849. eat and

  1850. drink with

  1851. tax collectors

  1852. and sinners?

  1853. Remember tax

  1854. collectors were

  1855. like traitors.

  1856. They were

  1857. working for

  1858. the occupying

  1859. Romans.

  1860. For the

  1861. Pharisees,

  1862. God's Messiah

  1863. was meant to

  1864. come in in a

  1865. blaze of glory

  1866. and get rid of

  1867. the Romans and

  1868. overthrow the

  1869. enemy and set

  1870. up and establish

  1871. God's kingdom

  1872. and restore

  1873. everything and

  1874. everybody to

  1875. their rightful

  1876. place.

  1877. But here's the

  1878. Messiah,

  1879. sitting down in

  1880. the middle of

  1881. these outsiders,

  1882. sitting amongst

  1883. these traitors,

  1884. sitting amongst

  1885. the outsiders,

  1886. eating and

  1887. drinking.

  1888. And in case

  1889. we're missing

  1890. the point,

  1891. that's precisely

  1892. the mission of

  1893. Jesus.

  1894. He says,

  1895. verse 31,

  1896. it is not

  1897. the healthy

  1898. who need

  1899. the doctor,

  1900. but it's

  1901. the sick.

  1902. I haven't

  1903. come to

  1904. call the

  1905. righteous,

  1906. but sinners

  1907. to repentance.

  1908. As we

  1909. finish,

  1910. I want to

  1911. ask ourselves

  1912. some questions.

  1913. How are we

  1914. doing at

  1915. welcoming

  1916. others?

  1917. sinners?

  1918. Do you

  1919. sit down

  1920. and eat

  1921. with tax

  1922. collectors

  1923. and sinners?

  1924. Let me

  1925. ask a couple

  1926. of questions.

  1927. Who are the

  1928. people that

  1929. you intentionally

  1930. socialise with

  1931. and chat to?

  1932. I don't

  1933. mean the

  1934. people who

  1935. you kind of

  1936. bump into

  1937. at work or

  1938. in college

  1939. and kind of

  1940. they're there,

  1941. but who do

  1942. you intentionally

  1943. take time

  1944. out with

  1945. and socialise

  1946. with?

  1947. Or do you

  1948. just like to

  1949. keep it

  1950. safe and

  1951. hang out

  1952. with the

  1953. good

  1954. Christians?

  1955. After all,

  1956. we don't

  1957. want to

  1958. become

  1959. contaminated

  1960. by those

  1961. who live

  1962. in moral

  1963. lives,

  1964. do we?

  1965. Who do

  1966. you invite

  1967. into your

  1968. homes?

  1969. Or who do

  1970. you invite

  1971. out if you

  1972. go out for

  1973. dinner or

  1974. a drink?

  1975. The nice

  1976. people?

  1977. The ones

  1978. that believe

  1979. the same

  1980. kinds of

  1981. things that

  1982. you believe?

  1983. After all,

  1984. we don't

  1985. want to

  1986. become unclean

  1987. by those

  1988. who hold

  1989. different views

  1990. about abortion

  1991. or gender

  1992. identity.

  1993. We don't

  1994. want to

  1995. touch them.

  1996. Or perhaps

  1997. the sad

  1998. reality is

  1999. you actually

  2000. don't know

  2001. anyone you

  2002. could welcome.

  2003. There's no

  2004. one you

  2005. can invite.

  2006. Maybe you've

  2007. lost the

  2008. reason that

  2009. Jesus called

  2010. you in the

  2011. first place.

  2012. Maybe we've

  2013. become like

  2014. a Pharisee

  2015. gossiping

  2016. about those

  2017. who eat

  2018. and drink

  2019. with sinners.

  2020. I'm not

  2021. going to

  2022. be like

  2023. them.

  2024. Well, let

  2025. me remind

  2026. us all.

  2027. Jesus has

  2028. not cleaned

  2029. us and

  2030. forgiven us

  2031. so that we

  2032. can stay in

  2033. our nice

  2034. cozy Christian

  2035. bubble with

  2036. our nice

  2037. Christian

  2038. friends,

  2039. sending nice

  2040. little Christian

  2041. text messages

  2042. on our

  2043. Facebook page.

  2044. church.

  2045. Jesus

  2046. welcomes

  2047. outsiders like

  2048. you and

  2049. me so

  2050. that we

  2051. can go and

  2052. welcome

  2053. outsiders in.

  2054. Three

  2055. things to

  2056. consider.

  2057. Very

  2058. simply, how

  2059. do we go

  2060. about welcoming

  2061. others?

  2062. Three

  2063. things.

  2064. Intentional.

  2065. Be

  2066. intentional.

  2067. Take the

  2068. time to think

  2069. through, right?

  2070. Okay, at the

  2071. weekend, I'm

  2072. going to go and

  2073. meet people.

  2074. I'm going to go

  2075. and invite them

  2076. and they're going

  2077. to come over to

  2078. the house or I'm

  2079. going to go out

  2080. and see them.

  2081. Be intentional.

  2082. Plan it.

  2083. Yes, it's going to

  2084. be sacrificial and

2085. you won't get to do

  2086. the things you want

  2087. to do, but be

  2088. intentional about

  2089. where you go and

  2090. the people you

  2091. hang out with.

  2092. Second one,

  2093. communal.

  2094. That is, don't

  2095. do it alone.

  2096. Invite other

  2097. believers along

  2098. with you to

  2099. meet other

  2100. people.

  2101. If you're having

  2102. friends over,

  2103. invite all kinds

  2104. of friends over.

  2105. Be intentional.

  2106. Be communal.

  2107. And the last

  2108. one, be

  2109. real.

  2110. And I simply

  2111. mean by that,

  2112. look, Jesus

  2113. sees right into

  2114. our hearts.

  2115. we don't need

  2116. to put on a

  2117. mask or a

  2118. pretense to

  2119. pretend that

  2120. we're better or

  2121. superior, that we

  2122. don't mess up or

  2123. we don't fail.

  2124. Be real about

  2125. your life.

  2126. Admit your

  2127. weakness.

  2128. Admit where you

  2129. need help.

  2130. Show that you

  2131. are dependent

  2132. on an amazing

  2133. God and an

  2134. amazing Savior

  2135. who comes to

  2136. clean us,

  2137. who comes to

  2138. forgive,

  2139. and who comes

  2140. to call us

  2141. to be part of

  2142. his mission.

  2143. Let's just

  2144. pray a

  2145. minute.

  2146. Let's

  2147. pray a

  2148. minute.

  2149. Let's

  2150. pray a

  2151. minute.

  2152. Let's

  2153. pray a

  2154. minute.

  2155. Let's

  2156. pray a

  2157. minute.
