  1. Starting at verse 36, it's up on the screen.

  2. If you have the Red Church Bibles, it's on 1036.

  3. 1036.

  4. Now, one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him.

  5. So he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.

  6. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house,

  7. she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.

  8. And as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears.

  9. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and poured perfume on them.

  10. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,

  11. If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is, that she is a sinner.

  12. Jesus answered him,

  13. Simon, I have something to tell you.

  14. Tell me, teacher, he said.

  15. Two men owed money to a certain money lender.

  16. One owed him 500 denarii and the other 50.

  17. Neither of them had the money to pay him back.

  18. So he cancelled the debts of both.

  19. Now which of them will love him more?

  20. Simon replied,

  21. I suppose the one who had the bigger debt cancelled.

  22. You have judged correctly, Jesus said.

  23. Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon,

  24. Do you see this woman?

  25. I came into your house.

  26. You did not give me any water for my feet,

  27. but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

  28. You did not give me a kiss,

  29. but this woman from the time I entered has not stopped kissing my feet.

  30. You did not put oil on my head,

  31. but she has poured perfume on my feet.

  32. Therefore I tell you,

  33. her many sins have been forgiven,

  34. for she loved much.

  35. But he who has been forgiven little,

  36. loves little.

  37. Then Jesus said to her,

  38. Your sins are forgiven.

  39. The other guests began to say among themselves,

  40. Who is this who even forgives sins?

  41. Jesus said to the woman,

  42. Your faith has saved you.

  43. Go in peace.

  44. Thanks, Connor.

  45. I haven't got little notes for you today,

  46. but there are pens,

  47. and I think Sam is going to distribute them.

  48. If you want to take notes,

  49. you can use the back side of your new sheet,

  50. and write things down there if you wish.

  51. Thank you.

  52. Thanks.

  53. Thanks, Sam.

  54. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help to us.

  55. Father, thank you for Luke,

  56. the author of this account of the Lord Jesus.

  57. Thank you that we have it in our language,

  58. and that we have the freedom to meet here today,

  59. and think about it,

  60. reflect on it.

  61. But we want to do more than that.

  62. We want to encounter the Lord Jesus,

  63. just as these people encountered you.

  64. And as we encounter the Lord Jesus,

  65. we want to be changed,

  66. to be the people you have called us to be,

  67. the people that you desire us to be.

  68. So, Father, would you do your work in our lives today?

  69. Do a radical transformation

  70. in only ways that you can do.

  71. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  72. Amen.

  73. The Pharisees,

  74. they really don't like Jesus,

  75. and they really don't like the people,

  76. or the situations Jesus finds himself in.

  77. Remember the people Jesus had met back in chapter 5?

  78. You might want to look back there, chapter 5.

  79. There were the fishermen.

  80. Then there was the man with the skin disease

  81. that no one could touch.

  82. Then there was the paralytic,

  83. left outside,

  84. the unwelcomed ones.

  85. And then it all boils over

  86. in verses, chapter 5, verse 27,

  87. when Jesus meets Levi, the tax collector,

  88. and calls him to follow him.

  89. Let's read verse 29.

  90. Then Levi held a great banquet

  91. for Jesus at his house,

  92. and a large crowd of tax collectors

  93. and others were eating with them.

  94. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law

  95. who belonged to their sect

  96. complained to his disciples,

  97. Why do you eat and drink

  98. with tax collectors and sinners?

  99. And they kept up their complaint.

  100. Verse 33.

  101. They said to him, to Jesus,

  102. that is,

  103. John's disciples often fast and pray,

  104. and so did the disciples of the Pharisees,

  105. but yours go on eating and drinking.

  106. I think it's safe to say

  107. that the Pharisees and Jesus

  108. are not Facebook friends.

  109. So it comes as a surprise

  110. when in chapter 7, verse 36,

  111. we read

  112. that one of the Pharisees

  113. invited Jesus

  114. to have dinner with him.

  115. And perhaps even more of a surprise

  116. that Jesus went to the Pharisees' house

  117. and reclined at the table.

  118. You see, the Pharisees

  119. were good religious folk.

  120. They were highly respected

  121. within their communities.

  122. They were keepers of the religious law.

  123. And the primary way of keeping the law,

  124. well, was to keep away from the sinners,

  125. the outsiders,

  126. those untouchables.

  127. Sinners were like a contagious disease,

  128. something to avoid at all costs.

  129. You see,

  130. their understanding was

  131. if you could keep yourself pure,

  132. uncontaminated,

  133. then the chances are

  134. God is going to welcome you.

  135. God is going to bring the kingdom.

  136. But this Jesus character

  137. has arrived

  138. and upset their thinking.

  139. He's been claiming to be God.

  140. He's breaking all their rules.

  141. And the shocking reality is

  142. Jesus spends all his time

  143. with the untouchable sinners.

  144. Rather than avoid them,

  145. he welcomes them.

  146. Rather than condemn and judge them,

  147. Jesus stops,

  148. it seems,

  149. goes out of his way

  150. to eat and drink with them.

  151. In fact,

  152. Jesus sums up

  153. what he came to do

  154. and what people think of him

  155. in verse 34.

  156. If you just go back a verse

  157. or to chapter 7,

  158. verse 34,

  159. he says,

  160. the Son of Man,

  161. speaking about himself,

  162. came eating and drinking.

  163. And you say,

  164. here is a glutton and a drunkard,

  165. a friend of tax collectors

  166. and sinners.

  167. That's how Jesus summarises

  168. his mission.

  169. One who comes eating and drinking,

  170. one who's a friend of tax collectors

  171. and sinners.

  172. Is Jesus really like this?

  173. Have we understood correctly

  174. what he came to do?

  175. Well, Luke recounts this story

  176. to tell us that this is exactly

  177. what Jesus does.

  178. You see,

  179. as Luke tells this story,

  180. as he recounts this event to us,

  181. it's as if Luke is saying,

  182. look,

  183. come on,

  184. come with me.

  185. You're also invited

  186. to this dinner.

  187. I want you to accompany

  188. the Lord Jesus

  189. and I want you to watch

  190. the people.

  191. Listen to how they respond.

  192. Listen to the conversations

  193. that take place.

  194. And as we sit in on this meal,

  195. we will discover

  196. that it's not the religious

  197. respectable who are accepted

  198. and welcomed,

  199. but those who accept

  200. and welcome Jesus.

  201. It's not the religious

  202. respectable who are accepted

  203. and welcomed,

  204. but those who accept

  205. and welcome Jesus.

  206. We're going to look at

  207. three big ideas

  208. from this dinner.

  209. First,

  210. the devotion Jesus deserves.

  211. You can picture the scene here.

  212. You've got all the honoured

  213. and privileged guests

  214. that's been invited

  215. and in amongst them all

  216. is Jesus.

  217. He's been invited too.

  218. As was the custom,

  219. in those days,

  220. people would sit on the floor

  221. to eat their food.

  222. You would rest in some ways,

  223. perhaps with your head

  224. on your left elbow,

  225. leaning in like this,

  226. and you would use your right hand

  227. to use bread

  228. and scoop it into the food

  229. that was there

  230. and to drink away.

  231. And your body would be positioned

  232. in such a way

  233. that your feet

  234. pointed away

  235. from the food area.

  236. Everything seems to be going well,

  237. enjoying the food,

  238. enjoying the company.

  239. Verse 37.

  240. When a woman

  241. who had lived

  242. a sinful life

  243. in that town

  244. learned that Jesus

  245. was eating

  246. at the Pharisee's house,

  247. she brought

  248. an alabaster jar

  249. of perfume.

  250. Now let's be clear.

  251. This is not

  252. a respectable woman.

  253. She has lived,

  254. we're told,

  255. a sinful life.

  256. Three times

  257. we're told,

  258. we're not even told

  259. her name.

  260. She's just told

  261. that she's a sinner.

  262. That many times

  263. she has sinned.

  264. The implication is

  265. that she's a woman

  266. who's known

  267. in the town.

  268. She is the town's

  269. prostitute.

  270. An unwelcome intruder,

  271. if ever there was one,

  272. to a meal

  273. with a Pharisee.

  274. Her very presence

  275. contaminated the house.

  276. Those eating

  277. ran the risk

  278. of becoming

  279. impure

  280. and unacceptable.

  281. You can imagine

  282. them all flinching,

  283. moving.

  284. But Jesus

  285. remains unmoved.

  286. Unflinching,

  287. he lets this

  288. sinful woman

  289. touch him.

  290. Verse 38.

  291. And as she

  292. stood behind him

  293. at his feet

  294. weeping,

  295. she began

  296. to wet

  297. his feet

  298. with her tears.

  299. Then she

  300. wiped them

  301. with her hair,

  302. kissed them

  303. and poured

  304. perfume on them.

  305. The intrusion

  306. is bad enough.

  307. Now it's

  308. become embarrassing.

  309. This woman

  310. starts crying

  311. and wiping

  312. the dirty dust

  313. off Jesus'

  314. feet with her hair.

  315. Why doesn't

  316. someone do

  317. something?

  318. perhaps they're

  319. all afraid

  320. to touch her.

  321. Who knows

  322. who she was

  323. with last

  324. night?

  325. Maybe they

  326. can't believe

  327. Jesus'

  328. acceptance of her.

  329. But she's

  330. not finished.

  331. This woman

  332. has spared

  333. no expense.

  334. She has

  335. bought a

  336. jar of

  337. alabaster

  338. perfume.

  339. Her life

  340. savings

  341. from her

  342. work.

  343. And she

  344. pours it

  345. on his feet.

  346. Why?

  347. What's she

  348. doing?

  349. Well,

  350. she's obviously

  351. heard about

  352. Jesus.

  353. She knows

  354. that Jesus

  355. has been

  356. invited to

  357. his house.

  358. She knows

  359. that this

  360. Jesus is

  361. the one

  362. who welcomes

  363. sinners.

  364. That's

  365. why she

  366. comes.

  367. And so

  368. this sinful

  369. woman

  370. pours out

  371. her devotion

  372. in the

  373. only way

  374. that she

  375. can.

  376. You see,

  377. her devotion

  378. is an

  379. expression

  380. of her

  381. welcome.

  382. She

  383. treats

  384. Jesus in

  385. such a

  386. way that

  387. Simon the

  388. host

  389. should have

  390. treated

  391. Jesus.

  392. Look at

  393. verse 44.

  394. Then

  395. Jesus

  396. turned

  397. towards

  398. the woman

  399. and said

  400. to Simon,

  401. do you

  402. see this

  403. woman?

  404. Well,

  405. what an

  406. understatement.

  407. She

  408. couldn't be

  409. avoided,

  410. could she?

  411. I came

  412. into

  413. your

  414. house.

  415. You

  416. did not

  417. give me

  418. any water

  419. for my

  420. feet,

  421. but

  422. she

  423. wet my

  424. feet with

  425. her tears

  426. and wiped

  427. them with

  428. her hair.

  429. You

  430. did not

  431. give me

  432. a kiss,

  433. but this

  434. woman,

  435. from the

  436. time I

  437. entered,

  438. has not

  439. stopped

  440. kissing my

  441. feet.

  442. You

  443. did not

  444. put oil

  445. on my

  446. head,

  447. but she

  448. has poured

  449. perfume on

  450. my feet.

  451. feet.

  452. You

  453. see,

  454. as the

  455. host,

  456. it was

  457. expected

  458. that you,

  459. or certainly

  460. at least

  461. one of

  462. your

  463. servants,

  464. would wash

  465. the feet

  466. of the

  467. guests and

  468. put a bit

  469. of olive

  470. oil,

  471. a way of

  472. freshening

  473. up.

  474. So,

  475. perhaps this

  476. was an

  477. intentional

  478. slight on

  479. Jesus,

  480. a kind of

  481. social snub.

  482. you're

  483. invited,

  484. Jesus,

  485. to the

  486. house,

  487. but,

  488. you know,

  489. let's be

  490. clear here,

  491. you're not

  492. welcome.

  493. And Jesus

  494. turns it

  495. all on

  496. its head,

  497. as they

  498. all look

  499. at this

  500. woman

  501. weeping.

  502. It's as if

  503. Jesus is

  504. saying to

  505. Simon,

  506. this is

  507. your house.

  508. You

  509. invited me,

  510. you sent

  511. the invitation,

  512. but see

  513. this woman,

  514. well,

  515. she's acted

  516. as the

  517. true host.

  518. She has

  519. welcomed me

  520. because she

  521. knows who

  522. I am.

  523. Simon,

  524. if you

  525. really knew

  526. who I

  527. was,

  528. well,

  529. you would

  530. welcome me

  531. too.

  532. You see,

  533. this sinful

  534. woman bothers

  535. me.

  536. Does she

  537. bother you?

  538. There's no

  539. hiding who

  540. she is.

  541. There's no

  542. masks,

  543. there's no

  544. cover-up,

  545. the clothes

  546. are a dead

  547. giveaway.

  548. She knows

  549. that everybody

  550. knows what

  551. she does.

  552. But it

  553. doesn't stop

  554. her.

  555. In

  556. shameless,

  557. extravagant

  558. devotion,

  559. she welcomes

  560. Jesus.

  561. and it

  562. bothers me

  563. because

  564. that's not

  565. me.

  566. Because when

  567. I come to

  568. Jesus,

  569. I like to

  570. come

  571. presentable,

  572. reminding

  573. myself of

  574. how good

  575. I've been

  576. and how

  577. I've managed

  578. not to

  579. fail or

  580. fall and

  581. proud that

  582. I haven't

  583. slipped up

  584. and,

  585. well,

  586. certainly not

  587. in public

  588. anyway,

  589. and don't

  590. have any

  591. major sins

  592. to confess.

  593. But if I

  594. am to

  595. truly know

  596. Jesus,

  597. well,

  598. then I

  599. need to

  600. learn to

  601. become like

  602. this sinful

  603. woman,

  604. without any

  605. pretense,

  606. shameless,

  607. risking it

  608. all,

  609. entering into

  610. the house

  611. where she

  612. could have

  613. been kicked

  614. out.

  615. I need

  616. to become

  617. like this

  618. sinful woman

  619. because,

  620. well,

  621. you and

  622. I,

  623. we're all

  624. sinful,

  625. and we

  626. all need

  627. Jesus.

  628. Second,

  629. there's the

  630. forgiveness

  631. that Jesus

  632. gives.

  633. Simon the

  634. Pharisee is

  635. disgusted

  636. with Jesus'

  637. lack of

  638. response.

  639. Look at

  640. verse 39.

  641. When the

  642. Pharisee who

  643. had invited

  644. him saw

  645. this,

  646. he said

  647. to himself,

  648. if this

  649. man were

  650. a prophet,

  651. he would

  652. know who

  653. is touching

  654. him and

  655. what kind

  656. of woman

  657. she is,

  658. that she's

  659. a sinner.

  660. It's bad

  661. enough that

  662. this sinful

  663. woman has

  664. gate-crashed

  665. his dinner

  666. and invaded

  667. his privacy.

  668. But what's

  669. worse is

  670. that Jesus

  671. has done

  672. nothing about

  673. it.

  674. He's been

  675. walking around

  676. claiming to

  677. be God.

  678. He should

  679. have rebuked

  680. her,

  681. condemned

  682. her,

  683. pushed her

  684. away.

  685. Instead,

  686. Jesus lets

  687. her filthy,

  688. dirty hands

  689. touch him.

  690. How dare

  691. he?

  692. be.

  693. You see,

  694. Simon is

  695. not interested

  696. in welcoming

  697. Jesus.

  698. He's more

  699. interested in

  700. setting a

  701. standard that

  702. Jesus might

  703. take note

  704. of.

  705. We're

  706. beginning to

  707. get the

  708. impression that

  709. the dinner

  710. has been

  711. orchestrated in

  712. such a way

  713. to, well,

  714. maybe teach

  715. Jesus a

  716. thing or

  717. two about

  718. how he

  719. should behave.

  720. If Jesus

  721. is who he

  722. claims to

  723. be, well,

  724. then he

  725. would have

  726. kicked her

  727. out.

  728. But that's

  729. not why

  730. Jesus has

  731. come.

  732. Jesus came,

  733. remember,

  734. to eat and

  735. drink with

  736. sinners because

  737. people like

  738. you and me

  739. desperately

  740. need Jesus.

  741. So often

  742. we can be

  743. busy seeking

  744. approval,

  745. can't we?

  746. keeping a

  747. mental account

  748. of how

  749. often we've

  750. served through

  751. the week,

  752. just totting it

  753. up and all

  754. the different

  755. people that

  756. we've helped

  757. and the

  758. money that

  759. we've given

  760. and the

  761. organisations

  762. that we've

  763. supported and

  764. just to make

  765. sure we don't

  766. forget, well,

  767. we just kind of

  768. accidentally let

  769. it slip.

  770. I've been so

  771. busy this week,

  772. as if busyness

  773. equated with

  774. holiness.

  775. holiness.

  776. If only

  777. others were

  778. like me.

  779. Well,

  780. Jesus comes

  781. not for that

  782. kind of

  783. person,

  784. but for

  785. those who

  786. live messy

  787. and broken

  788. lives.

  789. For those

  790. who fall

  791. and can't

  792. seem to

  793. break their

  794. sinful habits,

  795. who try

  796. harder only

  797. to fail

  798. again and

  799. again.

  800. He's not

  801. impressed by

  802. our approval

  803. seeking.

  804. He's not

  805. impressed by

  806. the cover-ups,

  807. the masks

  808. that we put

  809. on as we

  810. gather together

  811. and sing our

  812. worship songs

  813. and the fake

  814. smile we put

  815. on as we

  816. answer people's

  817. questions.

  818. I'm fine.

  819. He longs to

  820. come with

  821. people who

  822. come as

  823. they are.

  824. people who

  825. need

  826. forgiveness.

  827. You see,

  828. Jesus knows

  829. our hearts

  830. better than

  831. we know

  832. ourselves.

  833. Look at

  834. verse 40.

  835. Jesus

  836. answered him.

  837. Well,

  838. how did

  839. Jesus know?

  840. Remember,

  841. he said it

  842. to himself,

  843. didn't he,

  844. in verse 39.

  845. Poor Simon,

  846. he's really

  847. on edge now,

  848. isn't he?

  849. Because Jesus

  850. knows what

  851. he's thinking.

  852. Simon,

  853. I have

  854. something to

  855. tell you.

  856. Oh,

  857. tell me,

  858. teacher,

  859. he said,

  860. as if he

  861. could teach

  862. me anything.

  863. Two men

  864. owed money

  865. to a certain

  866. money lender.

  867. One owed him

  868. 500 denarii,

  869. about 18

  870. months'

  871. wages,

  872. so a

  873. significant

  874. amount of

  875. money,

  876. and the

  877. other 50,

  878. about six

  879. weeks.

  880. Significant,

  881. but certainly

  882. not as much.

  883. Neither of

  884. them had the

  885. money to pay

  886. him back,

  887. so he

  888. cancelled the

  889. debts of

  890. both.

  891. Now,

  892. which of

  893. them will

  894. love him

  895. more?

  896. Simon replied,

  897. well,

  898. I suppose the

  899. one who had

  900. the bigger debt

  901. cancelled.

  902. You have

  903. judged

  904. correctly,

  905. Jesus said.

  906. it's a

  907. simple,

  908. simple story,

  909. but deeply

  910. challenging.

  911. If someone

  912. forgives you,

  913. you love

  914. them.

  915. If someone

  916. forgives you

  917. a lot,

  918. you love

  919. them a lot.

  920. And the

  921. point is,

  922. this sinful

  923. woman loves

  924. Jesus,

  925. because she

  926. has received

  927. forgiveness.

  928. She loves

  929. Jesus a lot,

  930. that explains

  931. her devotion,

  932. because he

  933. has forgiven

  934. her a lot.

  935. Verse 47,

  936. therefore,

  937. I tell you,

  938. her many

  939. sins have

  940. been forgiven,

  941. for she

  942. loved much.

  943. But he

  944. who has

  945. been forgiven

  946. little,

  947. loves little.

  948. Then Jesus

  949. said to her,

  950. your sins

  951. are forgiven.

  952. The other

  953. guests began

  954. to say

  955. amongst

  956. themselves,

  957. who is

  958. this,

  959. who even

  960. forgives

  961. sins?

  962. And Jesus

  963. said to the

  964. woman,

  965. your faith

  966. has saved

  967. you,

  968. go in

  969. peace.

  970. You see,

  971. it's not her

  972. devotion

  973. that saves.

  974. It's not her

  975. extravagance

  976. that saves,

  977. as she

  978. pours out

  979. all that she

  980. has for

  981. Jesus.

  982. It's not,

  983. it's not just

  984. her love

  985. that saves.

  986. In her

  987. faith,

  988. it's her

  989. faith,

  990. verse 50,

  991. that Jesus

  992. alone can

  993. forgive

  994. sins.

  995. This sinful

  996. woman knows

  997. that Jesus

  998. is the true

  999. friend of

  1000. sinners.

  1001. She comes

  1002. to him

  1003. because he

  1004. is the one

  1005. who will

  1006. forgive her.

  1007. He won't

  1008. misuse her

  1009. or abuse

  1010. her.

  1011. He will

  1012. forgive her.

  1013. He won't

  1014. refuse her

  1015. or reject

  1016. her.

  1017. Jesus

  1018. will

  1019. welcome

  1020. her.

  1021. Her

  1022. love,

  1023. her

  1024. devotion,

  1025. her

  1026. extravagance

  1027. is because

  1028. she has

  1029. been forgiven.

  1030. She has

  1031. received

  1032. forgiveness

  1033. from Jesus.

  1034. Jesus.

  1035. Third,

  1036. the change

  1037. that Jesus

  1038. makes.

  1039. The story

  1040. is here

  1041. to tell us

  1042. that just

  1043. as the

  1044. woman

  1045. received

  1046. forgiveness,

  1047. we too

  1048. can all

  1049. be forgiven

  1050. of our

  1051. many sins.

  1052. The known

  1053. sins

  1054. and the

  1055. secret

  1056. sins.

  1057. The ones

  1058. we don't

  1059. want anybody

  1060. to know.

  1061. You see,

  1062. this little

  1063. story that

  1064. Jesus tells

  1065. in verses

  1066. 41 to

  1067. 42

  1068. about the

  1069. debts

  1070. being

  1071. cancelled.

  1072. Well,

  1073. it's a much

  1074. bigger story,

  1075. a much

  1076. bigger picture,

  1077. isn't it?

  1078. Of what

  1079. would happen

  1080. when Jesus

  1081. went to

  1082. the cross.

  1083. When Jesus

  1084. would pay

  1085. the debt

  1086. of my

  1087. sin and

  1088. your sin.

  1089. He would

  1090. take the

  1091. punishment

  1092. that you

  1093. and I

  1094. deserve.

  1095. He would

  1096. take the

  1097. hit for

  1098. you and

  1099. for me.

  1100. He would

  1101. cancel the

  1102. debt,

  1103. wipe the

  1104. slate clean

  1105. and no

  1106. longer hold

  1107. it against

  1108. us.

  1109. And in

  1110. case we're

  1111. struggling to

  1112. grasp the

  1113. enormity of

  1114. that,

  1115. let me

  1116. read to

  1117. you something

  1118. from Psalm

  1119. 103.

  1120. Familiar

  1121. words.

  1122. He does

  1123. not treat

  1124. us as

  1125. our sins

  1126. deserve,

  1127. or repay

  1128. us according

  1129. to our

  1130. iniquities.

  1131. For as

  1132. high as

  1133. the heavens

  1134. are above

  1135. the earth,

  1136. so great

  1137. is his

  1138. love for

  1139. those who

  1140. fear him.

  1141. As far

  1142. as the

  1143. east is

  1144. from the

  1145. west,

  1146. an eternity

  1147. of space,

  1148. so far

  1149. as he

  1150. removed

  1151. our

  1152. transgressions

  1153. from us.

  1154. He wipes

  1155. it away,

  1156. every

  1157. deep and

  1158. secret sin,

  1159. everything

  1160. that we

  1161. think,

  1162. no,

  1163. Jesus

  1164. couldn't

  1165. deal with

  1166. that,

  1167. he deals

  1168. with at

  1169. the cross.

  1170. Now the

  1171. thing is,

  1172. if we

  1173. have received

  1174. and experienced

  1175. this forgiveness,

  1176. it will

  1177. radically

  1178. change your

  1179. life.

  1180. It will

  1181. transform you.

  1182. In some

  1183. ways it's

  1184. the tester

  1185. to know

  1186. that we

  1187. have been

  1188. forgiven.

  1189. If we've

  1190. received

  1191. forgiveness,

  1192. it will

  1193. affect us

  1194. in two

  1195. ways.

  1196. First,

  1197. you will

  1198. have a

  1199. deep

  1200. love

  1201. for others.

  1202. You will

  1203. have a

  1204. deep

  1205. love

  1206. for others.

  1207. Look at

  1208. verse 47.

  1209. Jesus

  1210. says,

  1211. Therefore I

  1212. tell you,

  1213. her many

  1214. sins have

  1215. been forgiven

  1216. for she

  1217. loved much.

  1218. But he

  1219. who has

  1220. been forgiven

  1221. little,

  1222. loves

  1223. little.

  1224. That's

  1225. the problem

  1226. with Simon,

  1227. isn't it?

  1228. He loves

  1229. little because

  1230. he's been

  1231. forgiven

  1232. little.

  1233. Not that

  1234. he just

  1235. has little

  1236. sins and

  1237. there's no

  1238. big sins

  1239. to confess.

  1240. It's because

  1241. he can't

  1242. see how

  1243. great his

  1244. sin is.

  1245. That's his

  1246. problem.

  1247. And as a

  1248. result he

  1249. has no

  1250. love for

  1251. this sinful

  1252. woman who's

  1253. come bursting

  1254. into his

  1255. house.

  1256. She's to

  1257. be avoided,

  1258. ignored,

  1259. removed,

  1260. pushed out,

  1261. given a

  1262. kick.

  1263. You see,

  1264. sinful lives

  1265. like this

  1266. sinful woman

  1267. are broken

  1268. and messy.

  1269. They're

  1270. complicated.

  1271. And when we

  1272. look out

  1273. sometimes we

  1274. think,

  1275. well,

  1276. they're the

  1277. very kind

  1278. of people

  1279. we just

  1280. want to

  1281. avoid.

  1282. because it's

  1283. messy.

  1284. And it's

  1285. going to

  1286. cost us

  1287. our time

  1288. and our

  1289. personal space

  1290. if we get

  1291. involved.

  1292. It's going

  1293. to interrupt

  1294. my plans

  1295. and the

  1296. things that

  1297. I want

  1298. to do.

  1299. But when

  1300. we have

  1301. received

  1302. forgiveness,

  1303. when we

  1304. look at the

  1305. cross and

  1306. we see

  1307. Christ

  1308. who is

  1309. hanging there

  1310. for me

  1311. and see

  1312. how God

  1313. has cancelled

  1314. my sin

  1315. debt

  1316. and I

  1317. see

  1318. the cost

  1319. of it

  1320. all,

  1321. then I

  1322. will love

  1323. much

  1324. because I

  1325. have been

  1326. forgiven

  1327. much.

  1328. We will

  1329. care

  1330. and we

  1331. will invest

  1332. our lives

  1333. intentionally

  1334. into people.

  1335. We will

  1336. give our

  1337. time and

  1338. we'll open

  1339. our homes

  1340. and we'll

  1341. welcome and

  1342. there will

  1343. be nobody

  1344. who we

  1345. will ever

  1346. refuse and

  1347. we'll never

  1348. look at

  1349. anybody and

  1350. say,

  1351. sorry,

  1352. I haven't

  1353. got the

  1354. time because

  1355. well,

  1356. it's too

  1357. messy.

  1358. Forgiven

  1359. lots

  1360. and we

  1361. will love

  1362. lots.

  1363. But there's

  1364. another way in

  1365. which it will

  1366. change us.

  1367. Not just

  1368. love for

  1369. others,

  1370. but peace

  1371. for life.

  1372. Did you

  1373. get Jesus'

  1374. words at

  1375. the end,

  1376. that final

  1377. departing

  1378. word?

  1379. It's

  1380. amazing.

  1381. Jesus said

  1382. to the

  1383. woman,

  1384. your face

  1385. has saved

  1386. you.

  1387. Go in

  1388. peace.

  1389. Think about

  1390. this woman

  1391. for a minute.

  1392. She's lived

  1393. a life of

  1394. personal guilt

  1395. and public

  1396. shame.

  1397. Guilt is

  1398. when you

  1399. live with

  1400. your own

  1401. sin.

  1402. But shame

  1403. is when

  1404. everybody else

  1405. knows about

  1406. that sin.

  1407. She

  1408. couldn't walk

  1409. down the

  1410. street in

  1411. her town

  1412. without people

  1413. passing comment.

  1414. Her life

  1415. was ruled

  1416. by what

  1417. others said

  1418. and what

  1419. others thought

  1420. of her.

  1421. God

  1422. was

  1423. forgiven.

  1424. But now

  1425. she meets

  1426. Jesus

  1427. and that

  1428. changed

  1429. everything.

  1430. Go

  1431. in peace.

  1432. No longer

  1433. burdened by

  1434. her past.

  1435. No longer

  1436. having to

  1437. sneak out

  1438. at night.

  1439. No longer

  1440. afraid of

  1441. what others

  1442. would think

  1443. or say.

  1444. Well,

  1445. she was

  1446. now forgiven.

  1447. She was a

  1448. daughter of

  1449. God,

  1450. accepted and

  1451. welcomed.

  1452. how many

  1453. of us

  1454. continue to

  1455. live with

  1456. the shame

  1457. of the

  1458. past?

  1459. Avoiding

  1460. eye contact

  1461. in case

  1462. people ask

  1463. that question?

  1464. Keeping

  1465. busy so

  1466. that we

  1467. don't have

  1468. to talk?

  1469. Afraid

  1470. to step

  1471. out and

  1472. get involved?

  1473. Always

  1474. thinking,

  1475. what if?

  1476. what if

  1477. they find

  1478. out?

  1479. You see,

  1480. when we

  1481. face up

  1482. to our

  1483. sin,

  1484. like this

  1485. woman,

  1486. when we

  1487. run to

  1488. Jesus in

  1489. extravagant

  1490. devotion,

  1491. when we

  1492. receive and

  1493. experience

  1494. his

  1495. forgiveness,

  1496. hear the

  1497. words of

  1498. Jesus,

  1499. go in

  1500. peace.

  1501. peace.

  1502. No

  1503. longer

  1504. held back

  1505. by what

  1506. others

  1507. think or

  1508. say.

  1509. No

  1510. longer

  1511. controlled

  1512. by the

  1513. sins of

  1514. past,

  1515. but now

  1516. set free

  1517. to go

  1518. and love

  1519. and care

  1520. and welcome

  1521. others.

  1522. to

  1523. peace.

  1524. This

  1525. woman

  1526. really

  1527. bothers

  1528. me

  1529. because

  1530. she does

  1531. what I

  1532. should do

  1533. and I

  1534. don't do

  1535. it.

  1536. Too

  1537. busy

  1538. hiding,

  1539. too

  1540. busy

  1541. covering

  1542. up,

  1543. afraid of

  1544. what others

  1545. will think

  1546. if I

  1547. express my

  1548. love for

  1549. Jesus in

  1550. public

  1551. and talk

  1552. about him.

  1553. I need

  1554. to look at

  1555. the cross

  1556. again and

  1557. maybe that's

  1558. where we all

  1559. need to come

  1560. and see

  1561. Christ and

  1562. see the

  1563. forgiveness

  1564. that we

  1565. have received.

  1566. For those

  1567. who are

  1568. forgiven

  1569. lots,

  1570. love

  1571. lots

  1572. and can

  1573. go in

  1574. peace

  1575. set free

  1576. from their

  1577. past,

  1578. given a

  1579. future

  1580. to go

  1581. and love

  1582. and care

  1583. and welcome.

  1584. Let's

  1585. pray.

  1586. Let's

  1587. pray.

  1588. Thank you.
