  1. come in power, meeting us in our need today. Amen.

  2. Dad will fix it. That's what happens in our home anyway. If something breaks or it's not working,

  3. well give it to Dad, he'll fix it. Well most of the time things get fixed and sometimes they

  4. aren't and if we can't we give it to someone else who can or we take it to someone else who can.

  5. Sometimes however things are so broken that we just can't fix it.

  6. I was reminded of this during the summer. We received the sad news that Rebecca's friend

  7. had taken her own life. And as we went to visit the family and saw the heartache, I so desperately

  8. wanted to fix it all. Soon after we got news that my dad was diagnosed with cancer. As we

  9. got the results, two to five years with treatment, I so desperately wanted to fix it all.

  10. More recently, a friend confessed to being a secret alcoholic. As we heard the effects of

  11. their family and their family and their life, I so desperately wanted to fix it. And these

  12. things are not unique to me or to us as a family. Every one of you here have situations and circumstances

  13. that you desperately want to fix it. But you can't. Sometimes things are so terrible,

  14. there is nothing we can do. We are powerless and helpless.

  15. Well, in Luke's account, we meet people just like us. People who are powerless. People who are

  16. helpless. Four big ideas, four things we're going to learn from these true events today. First,

  17. Jesus confronts the powers of darkness. Jesus confronts the powers of darkness. As Jesus

  18. comes into the world and where we are in Luke's gospel, he's really just still beginning his

  19. ministry and people are getting to hear about him and he's receiving a lot of attention and he's not

  20. immune to the darkness we face. In fact, he walks right into it and confronts it head on. First, we meet the

  21. fearful disciples on a boat. Look at verse 22. One day, Jesus said to his disciples, let's go over to the

  22. other side of the lake. So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep. A squall,

  23. which is really a small hurricane, came down on the lake so that the boat was being swamped and they

  24. were in great danger. The disciples went and woke Jesus saying, Master, Master, we're going to drown.

  25. Now, we've just faced a little storm, storm Ophelia, and that was terrifying.

  26. You think what it would be like to be out in that open lake in the dark, no light, in your small little

  27. wooden boat being tossed around by the waves and your boat filling up with water. We're going to drown.

  28. We're going to die.

  29. Then we meet a tortured demon-possessed man. Verse 26.

  30. They sailed through the storm to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.

  31. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time,

  32. this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.

  33. Picture the scene. A naked madman. His only friends are the dead.

  34. Now, I don't know if you've ever experienced something or someone that you would say,

  35. this is evil or satanic. It is not a joke.

  36. This man has been physically, mentally, and spiritually tortured by Satan's servants.

  37. Even his name reflects the chaos that is in his life.

  38. Down at verse 30, Jesus asked him, what's your name?

  39. Legion.

  40. Legion means hundreds, even thousands.

  41. Legion, he replied, because many demons had gone into him.

  42. He had no rest.

  43. Third, we meet a woman ostracized by her sickness.

  44. Verse 40.

  45. Now, when Jesus returned, so he's kind of gone back again across the lake,

  46. a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

  47. Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet,

  48. pleading with him to come to his house, because his only daughter, a girl of about 12, was dying.

  49. And then it's as if Jesus is interrupted.

  50. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.

  51. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years,

  52. more than likely a gynecological problem.

  53. She'd been bleeding for 12 years, but no one could heal her.

  54. Not only does she have to deal with the constant bleeding,

  55. she faces being ostracized from her community.

  56. You see, her bleeding made her religiously unclean and untouchable.

  57. 12 years of being pushed out and ignored.

  58. And then fourth, we meet a broken father whose daughter is dying.

  59. We just met Jairus, didn't we?

  60. Who comes to Jesus to heal his only daughter.

  61. Well, verse 49.

  62. While Jesus was still speaking,

  63. someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler.

  64. Your daughter is dead, he said.

  65. Don't bother the teacher anymore.

  66. And with those words ringing in his ears,

  67. his life is shattered and broken.

  68. His only daughter, 12 years of age,

  69. has been snatched from him.

  70. You see, these are not just stories.

  71. These are real people in their real experiences of life.

  72. And when they are recorded together,

  73. they reveal the darkness that we all see and experience

  74. as we walk through life.

  75. The chaos of nature's storms,

  76. as hurricanes and flash flooding

  77. destroy whole communities,

  78. leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

  79. the devastation of evil,

  80. as it enslaves lives,

  81. breaking and destroying all that is beautiful

  82. and all that is good.

  83. The suffering that sickness brings,

  84. unbearable pain,

  85. restricting and isolating people

  86. from their friends and family.

  87. And then all of these things

  88. come to a horrible and inevitable climax.

  89. Death itself.

  90. And those we most love and hold dear

  91. are taken away.

  92. Sometimes through the process of time,

  93. sometimes without warning.

  94. And what makes this darkness so dark

  95. is our absolute inability to do anything about it.

  96. By ourselves, we are powerless and hopeless.

  97. The disciples,

  98. despite their years of fishing experience,

  99. are at the mercy of the storm.

  100. We're going to drown.

  101. And those who try to contain

  102. the demon-possessed man

  103. are confronted by their own weakness.

  104. Look at the end of verse 29.

  105. Many times the demon had seized him

  106. and though he was chained

  107. hand and foot and kept under guard,

  108. he had broken his chains

  109. and had been driven by the demon

  110. into solitary places.

  111. And the suffering woman

  112. who had sought every possible cure,

  113. end of verse 43,

  114. but no one,

  115. there was no doctor,

  116. no power

  117. that could heal her.

  118. And then Jairus,

  119. who came running to Jesus for healing,

  120. has lost all hope

  121. because his little daughter

  122. is dead.

  123. We like to think

  124. that we can face

  125. whatever life throws at us.

  126. That somehow we have the power

  127. and the resources within ourselves

  128. to deal with it.

  129. But life's experiences

  130. confront us with the reality

  131. that left to our own devices,

  132. we are powerless

  133. and helpless.

  134. Weather forecasts

  135. will not protect you.

  136. Rules and laws

  137. will not constrain evil.

  138. Doctors and medication

  139. are not always enough

  140. and no one and nothing

  141. can save us from death.

  142. Facing the chaos

  143. and brokenness of this world,

  144. we are powerless

  145. and we're hopeless.

  146. Second,

  147. Jesus restores

  148. with the power of God.

  149. Jesus restores

  150. with the power of God.

  151. Well, all those we meet

  152. in this account

  153. are powerless.

  154. Jesus proves

  155. to be powerful.

  156. Look at the way

  157. in which Jesus restores

  158. and renews

  159. each situation.

  160. First,

  161. the disciples

  162. in the storm.

  163. Panic has set in.

  164. The waves

  165. are coming in.

  166. We're going to drown.

  167. But listen

  168. to the words of Jesus.

  169. Verse 24.

  170. He got up,

  171. rebuked the wind

  172. and the raging waters.

  173. The storm subsided

  174. and always calm.

  175. From the chaos

  176. and destruction

  177. to calmness

  178. and restoration.

  179. Then the demon-possessed man,

  180. his life has been enslaved,

  181. controlled by demons.

  182. His life is ruined

  183. by their constant attacks.

  184. But look what happens

  185. when Jesus delivers.

  186. Verse 35.

  187. The people went out

  188. to see what had happened

  189. and when they came

  190. to Jesus,

  191. they found the man

  192. from whom the demons

  193. had gone out

  194. sitting

  195. at Jesus' feet,

  196. dressed

  197. and in his right mind

  198. and they were afraid.

  199. And those who had seen it

  200. told the people

  201. how the demon-possessed man

  202. had been cured.

  203. From a violent,

  204. tormented mind

  205. to a quiet

  206. and cured mind.

  207. Then the sick woman,

  208. her life is a desperate situation,

  209. no means of a cure,

  210. ostracized from her community.

  211. Her life hangs

  212. in the very balance.

  213. But an encounter with Jesus

  214. changes everything.

  215. Verse 44.

  216. She came up behind Jesus,

  217. touched the edge

  218. of his cloak

  219. and immediately

  220. her bleeding stopped.

  221. Verse 48.

  222. Then he said to her,

  223. Daughter,

  224. daughter,

  225. your faith

  226. has healed you.

  227. Go

  228. in peace.

  229. From pain

  230. and suffering

  231. to peace

  232. and healing.

  233. And then the helpless father.

  234. His life has been shattered

  235. and broken.

  236. His only daughter

  237. is dead.

  238. All hope is gone.

  239. And Jesus arrives.

  240. Verse 50.

  241. Hearing this,

  242. hearing that the little girl

  243. had died,

  244. Jesus said to Jairus,

  245. Don't be afraid.

  246. Just believe

  247. and she will be healed.

  248. Verse 52.

  249. Meanwhile,

  250. all the people

  251. were wailing

  252. and mourning for her.

  253. Stop wailing,

  254. Jesus said.

  255. She's not dead,

  256. but asleep.

  257. In other words,

  258. that to Jesus,

  259. her death

  260. was just like

  261. someone

  262. who is sleeping.

  263. They laughed at him

  264. knowing that she was dead,

  265. but he took her

  266. by the hand

  267. and said,

  268. My child,

  269. get up.

  270. And her spirit

  271. returned

  272. and at once

  273. she stood up.

  274. From unrelenting

  275. sorrow

  276. to inexpressible joy,

  277. from death itself

  278. to the resurrection

  279. of life.

  280. As Jesus

  281. comes and

  282. confronts

  283. the darkness,

  284. he restores

  285. what is broken,

  286. he renews

  287. what is destroyed,

  288. he reverses

  289. the disorder,

  290. lives that have been

  291. overwhelmed

  292. with darkness

  293. burst into

  294. glorious light.

  295. Where chaos

  296. ruled,

  297. it is now

  298. replaced by

  299. calm seas,

  300. stilled minds,

  301. unimagined peace,

  302. and new

  303. life.

  304. what awesome

  305. transformation.

  306. But let us not

  307. miss the point

  308. of all of these

  309. events.

  310. This is nothing

  311. less

  312. than the power

  313. of God

  314. on display.

  315. Look at how

  316. each of these

  317. stories

  318. develop and

  319. build on each

  320. other.

  321. As the disciples

  322. sit in the

  323. calmness of the

  324. sea,

  325. after Jesus

  326. has calmed

  327. it.

  328. Verse 25,

  329. In fear

  330. and amazement

  331. they asked

  332. one another,

  333. Who is

  334. this?

  335. He commands

  336. even the winds

  337. and the water

  338. and they obey

  339. him.

  340. Well,

  341. they knew that

  342. God had created

  343. the world by just

  344. speaking words.

  345. They knew that

  346. God alone

  347. controlled the

  348. forces of

  349. nature.

  350. They knew

  351. Psalm 147.

  352. He sends

  353. his commands

  354. to the earth.

  355. His word

  356. runs swiftly.

  357. He spreads

  358. the snow

  359. like wool

  360. and scatters

  361. the frost

  362. like ashes.

  363. He hurls

  364. down pebbles

  365. or hailstones.

  366. Who can withstand

  367. his icy blast?

  368. He sends

  369. his word

  370. and melts

  371. them.

  372. He stirs

  373. up the breeze

  374. and the waters

  375. flow.

  376. So who

  377. is this

  378. that stands

  379. before us

  380. in the boat

  381. rebuking

  382. nature

  383. by his

  384. word?

  385. Who is

  386. this?

  387. Well,

  388. ironically,

  389. it's the demons

  390. who know

  391. who Jesus

  392. is.

  393. Look down

  394. at verse 28.

  395. When this

  396. man,

  397. this demon

  398. possessed

  399. man,

  400. saw Jesus,

  401. he cried

  402. out and fell

  403. at Jesus'

  404. feet,

  405. shouting at

  406. the top

  407. of his

  408. voice,

  409. what do

  410. you want

  411. with me?

  412. Jesus,

  413. son of the

  414. most high

  415. God,

  416. a title

  417. that's reserved

  418. for God

  419. alone.

  420. I beg you,

  421. don't torture

  422. me,

  423. for Jesus

  424. had commanded

  425. the evil

  426. spirit to

  427. come out

  428. of the

  429. man.

  430. We expect

  431. that when

  432. Jesus meets

  433. a demon

  434. possessed

  435. man,

  436. there's going

  437. to be some

  438. kind of

  439. fight,

  440. some kind

  441. of resistance,

  442. that this is

  443. going to

  444. be difficult

  445. and this

  446. is going

  447. to be

  448. hard.

  449. Instead,

  450. when he

  451. comes to

  452. Jesus,

  453. he falls

  454. at his

  455. feet in

  456. total

  457. surrender.

  458. Verse 32,

  459. a large

  460. herd of

  461. pigs were

  462. feeding there

  463. on the

  464. hillside.

  465. The demons

  466. begged

  467. Jesus to

  468. let them

  469. go into

  470. them and

  471. Jesus gave

  472. them

  473. permission.

  474. when the

  475. demons came

  476. out of

  477. the man,

  478. they went

  479. into the

  480. pigs and

  481. the herd

  482. rushed down

  483. the steep

  484. bank into

  485. the lake

  486. and was

  487. drowned.

  488. Now,

  489. I don't

  490. want you

  491. getting

  492. sidetracked

  493. worrying

  494. about these

  495. poor little

  496. pigs and

  497. their nice

  498. little curly

  499. tails.

  500. That's not

  501. the point.

  502. We are

  503. to stand

  504. back and

  505. be amazed

  506. at the

  507. power of

  508. God.

  509. As

  510. satanic

  511. forces

  512. crumble

  513. at the

  514. words of

  515. Jesus,

  516. begging

  517. him for

  518. permission

  519. and obey

  520. him at

  521. his command

  522. to their

  523. very

  524. destruction.

  525. You see,

  526. if the

  527. disciples are

  528. asking the

  529. question,

  530. who is

  531. Jesus?

  532. Who is

  533. this?

  534. And the

  535. demons get

  536. it right by

  537. answering,

  538. Jesus,

  539. son of the

  540. most high

  541. God,

  542. then the

  543. woman knows

  544. exactly who

  545. it is that

  546. she must

  547. go to.

  548. As she

  549. reaches out

  550. to Jesus,

  551. verse 46,

  552. Jesus said,

  553. someone touched

  554. me, I

  555. know that

  556. power has

  557. gone out

  558. from me.

  559. She knows

  560. where to

  561. run,

  562. because she

  563. knows who

  564. Jesus is.

  565. Power

  566. flows from

  567. Jesus.

  568. Power over

  569. destruction in

  570. the storms,

  571. power over

  572. the devil,

  573. power over

  574. disease,

  575. and ultimately

  576. power over

  577. death,

  578. as Jesus

  579. speaks,

  580. and the

  581. very dead

  582. are raised

  583. to life.

  584. Listen to

  585. his words.

  586. Watch and

  587. be amazed

  588. that this

  589. is God

  590. in the

  591. person of

  592. Jesus Christ

  593. intervening

  594. into the

  595. lives of

  596. ordinary

  597. people who

  598. are hopeless

  599. and powerless

  600. and helpless.

  601. Now it's

  602. important we

  603. really don't

  604. miss this

  605. point.

  606. You see,

  607. all that we

  608. see Jesus

  609. doing here,

  610. we need to

  611. be careful how

  612. we think about

  613. it for

  614. ourselves.

  615. This does

  616. not mean

  617. that Jesus

  618. promises to

  619. calm every

  620. storm,

  621. banish every

  622. evil,

  623. heal every

  624. sickness,

  625. and raise

  626. all who

  627. die.

  628. We should

  629. never limit

  630. the power

  631. of Jesus.

  632. We should

  633. never limit

  634. his authority

  635. over all of

  636. these things

  637. and at his

  638. will to do

  639. what pleases

  640. him.

  641. But he does

  642. not promise

  643. it in every

  644. situation.

  645. In fact,

  646. as Jesus

  647. walked this

  648. earth,

  649. he did

  650. not heal

  651. every single

  652. person.

  653. And every

  654. single person

  655. that Jesus

  656. did heal,

  657. well,

  658. they died

  659. anyway.

  660. Even Jairus'

  661. daughter would

  662. have to die

  663. again and go

  664. through the

  665. pain of

  666. dying.

  667. The miracles

  668. of Jesus

  669. are not a

  670. promise of a

  671. suffering-free

  672. life for you

  673. and for me.

  674. So what

  675. are they?

  676. Well,

  677. they're here

  678. to tell

  679. us that

  680. Jesus

  681. confronts

  682. the powers

  683. of darkness

  684. and as

  685. he does

  686. so,

  687. he displays

  688. the power

  689. of God

  690. to restore

  691. and renew

  692. so that

  693. in the

  694. darkness,

  695. in our

  696. powerless

  697. and helpless

  698. state,

  699. we will

  700. not fear.

  701. Instead,

  702. we will

  703. run to

  704. him in

  705. faith.

  706. so third,

  707. Jesus

  708. frees us

  709. or sets

  710. us free

  711. by the

  712. power

  713. of faith.

  714. He sets

  715. us free

  716. by the

  717. power

  718. of faith.

  719. God

  720. says,

  721. I wondered

  722. if you

  723. noticed

  724. the main

  725. emotion

  726. or the

  727. main

  728. reaction

  729. in all

  730. of these

  731. events

  732. as we've

  733. gone

  734. through.

  735. It's one

  736. of fear.

  737. There's

  738. fear

  739. in the

  740. storm.

  741. There's

  742. fear of

  743. this demon

  744. possessed

  745. man as

  746. he lives

  747. on the

  748. edge of

  749. town and

  750. what he's

  751. going to

  752. do to

  753. the people.

  754. there's

  755. fear for

  756. this woman

  757. that she's

  758. going to

  759. be noticed

  760. and what

  761. are people

  762. going to

  763. say if

  764. they find

  765. out she's

  766. an

  767. untouchable.

  768. There's

  769. fear for

  770. Jairus

  771. as his

  772. daughter is

  773. dying and

  774. eventually

  775. death takes

  776. her.

  777. This is

  778. normal

  779. and a

  780. natural

  781. reaction.

  782. And when

  783. we can't

  784. control the

  785. events or

  786. the circumstances

  787. around us,

  788. we begin to

  789. panic and

  790. we fear.

  791. And sometimes

  792. fear grips us

  793. in such a

  794. way that it

  795. conquers us

  796. and controls

  797. us.

  798. We feel

  799. imprisoned by

  800. anxiety and

  801. worry.

  802. No way

  803. out.

  804. No hope.

  805. But there's

  806. another fear

  807. going on.

  808. Did you

  809. notice that?

  810. Look at the

  811. disciples.

  812. They were

  813. afraid in

  814. the storm.

  815. They were

  816. afraid they

  817. were going

  818. to drown.

  819. Then Jesus

  820. calms the

  821. storm.

  822. So it's

  823. all nice

  824. and calm.

  825. But look

  826. at their

  827. response,

  828. verse 25.

  829. In fear

  830. and amazement,

  831. they asked

  832. one another,

  833. who is this?

  834. He commands

  835. even the

  836. winds and

  837. the water

  838. and they

  839. obey him.

  840. It was the

  841. same for the

  842. people where

  843. the demon

  844. possessed man

  845. had lived.

  846. they were

  847. afraid of

  848. him.

  849. He was

  850. causing

  851. chaos and

  852. destruction.

  853. And then

  854. Jesus

  855. confronts

  856. him and

  857. he releases

  858. the man

  859. from the

  860. demon

  861. possession.

  862. And he's

  863. healed and

  864. cured and

  865. in his

  866. right mind.

  867. But look

  868. at the

  869. response of

  870. the people,

  871. verse

  872. 25.

  873. Sorry,

  874. verse 37.

  875. then all

  876. the people

  877. of the

  878. region of

  879. the

  880. Gerasenes

  881. asked Jesus

  882. to leave

  883. them because

  884. they were

  885. overcome with

  886. fear.

  887. So he

  888. got into

  889. the boat

  890. and left.

  891. You see,

  892. when confronted

  893. with God's

  894. power,

  895. there is

  896. an even

  897. greater

  898. fear.

  899. not just

  900. fear of

  901. the

  902. circumstances

  903. we are

  904. in,

  905. but fear

  906. of an

  907. awesome

  908. power.

  909. They are

  910. so terrified

  911. that they

  912. want to

  913. get rid

  914. of Jesus.

  915. Why?

  916. Well,

  917. they're

  918. missing the

  919. point.

  920. They're not

  921. grasping who

  922. Jesus is.

  923. Jesus didn't

  924. come into the

  925. world to

  926. terrify us,

  927. but to

  928. save us.

  929. Jesus

  930. comes into

  931. the world

  932. to display

  933. his power

  934. so that

  935. we will

  936. run to

  937. him and

  938. trust him.

  939. If we

  940. grasp who

  941. Jesus is,

  942. rather than

  943. be conquered

  944. by fear,

  945. we will

  946. run to

  947. him in

  948. faith.

  949. The

  950. question

  951. Jesus

  952. asks his

  953. disciples in

  954. the boat

  955. is the

  956. same question

  957. we all

  958. need to

  959. ask

  960. ourselves.

  961. do you

  962. see what

  963. Jesus

  964. asked them

  965. in verse

  966. 25?

  967. The

  968. beginning

  969. of verse

  970. 25,

  971. he says

  972. to them,

  973. where is

  974. your

  975. faith?

  976. Where is

  977. your faith?

  978. Who do

  979. you trust?

  980. Who do

  981. you run

  982. to in the

  983. chaos and

  984. brokenness of

  985. life?

  986. When we're

  987. out of

  988. options,

  989. when we're

  990. powerless and

  991. helpless,

  992. where do

  993. you turn?

  994. Well,

  995. Jairus and

  996. the woman

  997. show us

  998. where we

  999. should turn

  1000. and what

  1001. faith is

  1002. like.

  1003. First,

  1004. we need

  1005. a desperate

  1006. faith.

  1007. Verse

  1008. 41,

  1009. then a

  1010. man named

  1011. Jairus,

  1012. a ruler of

  1013. the synagogue.

  1014. Now,

  1015. a ruler of

  1016. the synagogue

  1017. is a very

  1018. high position.

  1019. You are

  1020. well respected.

  1021. People kind

  1022. of tilt

  1023. the head

  1024. to you.

  1025. A ruler

  1026. of the

  1027. synagogue

  1028. came and

  1029. fell at

  1030. Jesus'

  1031. feet,

  1032. pleading

  1033. with him

  1034. to come

  1035. to his

  1036. house.

  1037. Again,

  1038. you get

  1039. the sense

  1040. that Jairus

  1041. knows something

  1042. of who

  1043. Jesus is,

  1044. and rather

  1045. than run

  1046. in fear,

  1047. he runs

  1048. in faith.

  1049. He falls

  1050. at Jesus'

  1051. feet in

  1052. desperation.

  1053. He has

  1054. nowhere else

  1055. to go

  1056. to,

  1057. no one

  1058. else to

  1059. turn to.

  1060. He

  1061. humbles

  1062. himself

  1063. before

  1064. Jesus,

  1065. throwing

  1066. everything

  1067. at him.

  1068. Everything

  1069. rests on

  1070. what Jesus

  1071. will do.

  1072. He

  1073. depends on

  1074. him and

  1075. him alone.

  1076. That's

  1077. what faith

  1078. is.

  1079. It's

  1080. saying,

  1081. without

  1082. Jesus,

  1083. I will

  1084. not get

  1085. through

  1086. this.

  1087. I need

  1088. you.

  1089. don't

  1090. be

  1091. conquered

  1092. by your

  1093. fear.

  1094. Run

  1095. to him

  1096. in

  1097. faith.

  1098. But we

  1099. also need

  1100. what I

  1101. just term

  1102. here a

  1103. touching

  1104. faith.

  1105. Look at

  1106. verse 44.

  1107. Look at

  1108. how the

  1109. woman comes

  1110. to Jesus.

  1111. She came

  1112. up behind

  1113. him,

  1114. secretly,

  1115. and touched

  1116. the edge

  1117. of his

  1118. cloak,

  1119. and

  1120. immediately

  1121. her

  1122. bleeding

  1123. stopped.

  1124. Who

  1125. touched

  1126. me?

  1127. Jesus

  1128. asked.

  1129. When they

  1130. all denied

  1131. it,

  1132. Peter said,

  1133. Master,

  1134. the people

  1135. are crowding

  1136. and pressing

  1137. against you.

  1138. I mean,

  1139. everybody's

  1140. touching you.

  1141. What do

  1142. you think?

  1143. But Jesus

  1144. said,

  1145. someone

  1146. touched

  1147. me,

  1148. and I

  1149. know that

  1150. power has

  1151. gone out

  1152. from me.

  1153. Remember,

  1154. this woman

  1155. is religiously

  1156. unclean.

  1157. Because of

  1158. her bleeding,

  1159. she's

  1160. untouchable.

  1161. If she

  1162. touches

  1163. someone,

  1164. they become

  1165. unclean.

  1166. She could

  1167. lose her

  1168. life over

  1169. this.

  1170. But when

  1171. she reaches

  1172. out and

  1173. touches

  1174. Jesus,

  1175. she becomes

  1176. clean.

  1177. Her life

  1178. and circumstances

  1179. are changed.

  1180. And in

  1181. case we

  1182. think that

  1183. somehow there's

  1184. something magical

  1185. going on,

  1186. that Jesus'

  1187. clothes have

  1188. power to

  1189. heal,

  1190. look how

  1191. Jesus responds.

  1192. He wants

  1193. everybody to

  1194. make sure

  1195. how this

  1196. healing has

  1197. happened,

  1198. including us.

  1199. Verse 47,

  1200. Then the woman,

  1201. seeing that she

  1202. could not go

  1203. unnoticed,

  1204. came trembling

  1205. and fell at

  1206. his feet,

  1207. again in

  1208. desperation.

  1209. In the

  1210. presence of

  1211. all the

  1212. people looking

  1213. in at her,

  1214. she told why

  1215. she had

  1216. touched him

  1217. and how she

  1218. had been

  1219. instantly healed.

  1220. Then Jesus

  1221. said to her,

  1222. daughter,

  1223. your faith

  1224. has healed

  1225. you.

  1226. Go in

  1227. peace.

  1228. It's her

  1229. faith in

  1230. Jesus

  1231. that heals.

  1232. Everybody

  1233. else is

  1234. crowding around

  1235. and touching

  1236. and pushing

  1237. against Jesus

  1238. but nothing

  1239. happens.

  1240. But this

  1241. woman reaches

  1242. out in

  1243. frail,

  1244. secret

  1245. faith.

  1246. faith.

  1247. That's

  1248. what faith

  1249. is.

  1250. Reaching

  1251. out to

  1252. Jesus

  1253. and simply

  1254. trusting

  1255. in him.

  1256. Don't be

  1257. conquered by

  1258. your fear.

  1259. Run to

  1260. him

  1261. in faith.

  1262. faith.

  1263. And then

  1264. last,

  1265. Jesus

  1266. gives

  1267. hope

  1268. through the

  1269. power of

  1270. his death

  1271. and

  1272. resurrection.

  1273. Jesus

  1274. gives hope

  1275. through the

  1276. power of

  1277. his death

  1278. and

  1279. resurrection.

  1280. You see,

  1281. these stories

  1282. are,

  1283. yes,

  1284. they're

  1285. amazing

  1286. stories,

  1287. but they're

  1288. stories that

  1289. push and

  1290. point to

  1291. an even

  1292. bigger

  1293. and ultimate

  1294. story.

  1295. What these

  1296. stories tell

  1297. us about

  1298. is that

  1299. what Jesus

  1300. did for

  1301. some people

  1302. here,

  1303. he has

  1304. done for

  1305. all through

  1306. his death

  1307. and resurrection.

  1308. What Jesus

  1309. has done

  1310. for some

  1311. here,

  1312. he has

  1313. done for

  1314. all who

  1315. will trust

  1316. him through

  1317. his death

  1318. and resurrection.

  1319. As Jesus

  1320. would go to

  1321. the cross,

  1322. it is at

  1323. the cross

  1324. where he

  1325. confronts

  1326. the powers

  1327. of darkness

  1328. in all

  1329. its terror.

  1330. At the

  1331. cross he

  1332. went to

  1333. war against

  1334. sin and

  1335. Satan.

  1336. And as

  1337. Jesus died,

  1338. it seemed

  1339. that evil

  1340. has won,

  1341. darkness

  1342. descended,

  1343. the demons

  1344. laugh.

  1345. But three

  1346. days later

  1347. Jesus rises

  1348. again from

  1349. the grave.

  1350. He has

  1351. defeated

  1352. sin.

  1353. He has

  1354. defeated

  1355. Satan.

  1356. He has

  1357. conquered

  1358. sickness and

  1359. death.

  1360. He has

  1361. disarmed

  1362. the evil

  1363. powers and

  1364. authority.

  1365. He has

  1366. destroyed

  1367. the devil

  1368. who holds

  1369. the power

  1370. of death.

  1371. Jesus

  1372. rose

  1373. victorious

  1374. and triumphs

  1375. over all

  1376. with absolute

  1377. power and

  1378. supreme

  1379. authority.

  1380. This is

  1381. the God

  1382. that we

  1383. are to

  1384. look to.

  1385. This is

  1386. the God

  1387. that we

  1388. can trust.

  1389. He sets

  1390. us free

  1391. from our

  1392. fear today.

  1393. and he

  1394. gives us

  1395. the hope

  1396. of eternal

  1397. freedom

  1398. to come.

  1399. This is

  1400. the God

  1401. who says

  1402. to us,

  1403. daughter,

  1404. my son,

  1405. go in

  1406. peace.

  1407. Do not

  1408. let the

  1409. fears of

  1410. the darkness

  1411. overcome

  1412. you.

  1413. Go in

  1414. peace.

  1415. and this

  1416. is the

  1417. God

  1418. who will

  1419. say to

  1420. us,

  1421. for surely

  1422. when that

  1423. day will

  1424. come,

  1425. when we

  1426. all die,

  1427. whether it

  1428. comes through

  1429. the process

  1430. of time

  1431. or whether

  1432. it comes

  1433. suddenly,

  1434. we will

  1435. hear the

  1436. words of

  1437. Jesus say

  1438. to us,

  1439. my child,

  1440. get up.

  1441. and we

  1442. will rise

  1443. and we

  1444. will live

  1445. with him

  1446. for all

  1447. eternity

  1448. in a

  1449. world

  1450. absence

  1451. of darkness

  1452. and evil

  1453. and sin

  1454. and sickness

  1455. and disease

  1456. and death.

  1457. Do not

  1458. fear.

  1459. Go in

  1460. peace.

  1461. Let's

  1462. pray.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Amen.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.

  1469. Amen.

  1470. Amen.

  1471. Amen.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. Amen.

  1474. Amen.

  1475. Amen.

  1476. Amen.

  1477. Lord,

  1478. what can we

  1479. do but

  1480. other than

  1481. bow before

  1482. you and

  1483. fall at

  1484. your feet

  1485. just like

  1486. Jairus,

  1487. just like

  1488. the woman.

  1489. For we

  1490. have nowhere

  1491. else to

  1492. go.

  1493. We have

  1494. no one

  1495. else to

  1496. run to.

  1497. You are

  1498. Lord and

  1499. you are

  1500. God.

  1501. You are

  1502. powerful,

  1503. awesome,

  1504. and great.

  1505. And you

  1506. have displayed

  1507. that power

  1508. through your

  1509. death and

  1510. through your

  1511. resurrection.

  1512. salvation.

  1513. And

  1514. therefore we

  1515. stand,

  1516. not

  1517. conquered by

  1518. fear,

  1519. but going

  1520. in peace

  1521. and looking

  1522. forward in

  1523. faith.

  1524. Thank you

  1525. that you

  1526. are an

  1527. awesome God

  1528. that we

  1529. can trust,

  1530. a God

  1531. whom we

  1532. can look

  1533. to.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.

  1542. Amen.

  1543. Amen.

  1544. Amen.

  1545. Amen.

  1546. Amen.

  1547. Amen.

  1548. Amen.

  1549. Amen.

  1550. Amen.

  1551. Amen.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. We praise you

  1554. for who you

  1555. are.

  1556. Amen.

  1557. Amen.

  1558. Amen.

  1559. Amen.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Amen.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Amen.

  1565. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.

  1569. Amen.

  1570. Amen.

  1571. Amen.

  1572. Amen.

  1573. Amen.

  1574. Amen.

  1575. Amen.

  1576. Amen.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Amen.
