  1. Bibles might be slightly different in some of them. Some of them are a bit newer.

  2. We're going to be starting from verse 37 and we'll read down to the start of chapter 12 verse 3.

  3. Luke chapter 11 verse 37.

    Luke 11:37

  4. When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him.

  5. So he went in and reclined at the table.

  6. But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised.

  7. Then the Lord said to him,

  8. Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

  9. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?

  10. But give what is inside the dish to the poor and everything will be clean for you.

  11. Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs,

  12. but you neglect justice and the love of God.

  13. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

  14. Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

  15. Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it.

  16. One of the experts in the law answered him,

  17. Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.

  18. Jesus replied,

  19. Woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry,

  20. and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.

  21. Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them.

  22. So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did.

  23. They kill the prophets, and you build their tombs.

  24. Because of this, God in his wisdom said,

  25. I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill, and others they will persecute.

  26. Therefore, this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,

  27. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.

  28. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

  29. Woe to you, experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge.

  30. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.

  31. When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely,

  32. and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say.

  33. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered so that they were trampling on one another,

  34. Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying,

  35. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  36. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.

  37. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight,

  38. and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

  39. Thanks, Connor.

  40. Well, let's keep our Bibles open, and let's pray and ask for God's help.

  41. Father, would you give to us an undivided heart,

  42. a broken and contrite heart,

  43. so that we might not only hear your word,

  44. but see it applied to our lives,

  45. so that it will change us, and we will become sincere followers of you.

  46. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. You've just got your cup of coffee from the hatch,

  49. and you see a visitor come through the doors.

  50. So you make your way over to say hello.

  51. And just as you're about to welcome them,

  52. someone else comes up to the visitor and says,

  53. Watch out!

  54. And then pointing their finger at you,

  55. says,

  56. They're a hypocrite.

  57. And then walks off,

  58. leaving you standing a little red-faced.

  59. Offended?

  60. I think I would be.

  61. Well, it seems Jesus is in an offending mood.

  62. Look at chapter 12, verse 1.

  63. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered,

  64. so that they were trampling on one another.

  65. Everyone is there.

  66. They've been following.

  67. And they want to see what Jesus is going to do next.

  68. Well, they're in for a shock.

  69. Jesus began to speak first to his disciples,

  70. saying,

  71. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees,

  72. which is hypocrisy.

  73. See that lot over there?

  74. Hypocrites.

  75. Don't be fooled by their big Bibles

  76. and their well-crafted prayers.

  77. They're a fake.

  78. Hypocrite comes from the word actor.

  79. So in the open-air theatres of long ago,

  80. people would just simply put on the mask.

  81. They didn't have all the technology,

  82. so it's just a simple mask they would put on.

  83. And play the role of someone else.

  84. It's an act.

  85. They are impersonating someone who they are not.

  86. So when Jesus is warning his disciples about the Pharisees,

  87. he's saying,

  88. Watch out for those impersonators.

  89. They're fake.

  90. It's all show.

  91. It's an act.

  92. They're hypocrites.

  93. Watch out for that bunch of people

  94. who meet down in Carragoline Community Centre,

  95. singing their songs.

  96. It's very offensive to call someone a hypocrite.

  97. Unless, of course, it's true.

  98. Look, Jesus is saying here,

  99. If you're going to be my disciple,

  100. if you're going to follow me,

  101. there is no room for play acting.

  102. There's no point in turning up on a Sunday morning

  103. and putting on a good show.

  104. Turning up with our masks,

  105. creating an image,

  106. and looking like a Christian.

  107. Well, in case we think following Jesus

  108. is all about outward performance,

  109. Jesus has some very strong words for us.

  110. First he says,

  111. Clean up your act.

  112. Clean up your act.

  113. This hypocrisy talk

  114. all started when Jesus was invited

  115. by a Pharisee to have dinner.

  116. Look at verse 38.

  117. But the Pharisee,

  118. noticing that Jesus did not first wash

  119. before the meal,

  120. was surprised.

  121. Now, it's not like Jesus

  122. has just been to the loo

  123. and he's forgot to wash his hands

  124. and it's all got a little bit embarrassing.

  125. Now, we're talking here about ritual

  126. or ceremonial washing.

  127. It wasn't to get rid of dirt and bugs.

  128. It was this outward show

  129. to say that you were clean,

  130. that you were acceptable to God.

  131. And the Pharisees were experts

  132. in keeping clean.

  133. Even their name was a giveaway.

  134. Pharisee simply means separate one

  135. or holy one.

  136. And they were so meticulous

  137. that they made up lots of extra rules

  138. and traditions about washing.

  139. Everything had to be washed

  140. in a certain way

  141. and so many times.

  142. You even had special places

  143. where you had to do the washing,

  144. separate from everything else.

  145. But most importantly,

  146. you had to wash

  147. when you came into contact

  148. with unclean people.

  149. You can get the picture,

  150. can't you,

  151. about the Pharisees.

  152. It was all about

  153. keeping up appearances.

  154. Making sure that everyone knew

  155. you were separate

  156. and you were holy.

  157. Outward performance

  158. was everything.

  159. Because as long as we are

  160. outwardly clean,

  161. God will accept you

  162. and welcome you.

  163. Now we might not have had

  164. a little bowl at the door there

  165. for you to do

  166. a little ritual washing

  167. as you came in.

  168. But don't we all have

  169. our little clean rules

  170. that we like to participate in

  171. so that we look good

  172. on the outside?

  173. We don't drink or smoke

  174. and avoid the places that do.

  175. We want to be clean.

  176. We hang out with

  177. the good living people

  178. and stay clear of those

  179. who are morally dubious

  180. and those who identify as gay.

  181. We shake our head

  182. in disgust at those sinful people

  183. and boast about

  184. how I'm not like that

  185. and I wouldn't do that.

  186. You get the picture,

  187. don't you?

  188. It can be all about

  189. keeping up appearances.

  190. Making sure that everyone

  191. knows that we're separate

  192. and holy

  193. and, well,

  194. outward performance

  195. is everything.

  196. As long as I am

  197. outwardly clean,

  198. God will accept me

  199. and welcome me.

  200. Well, in case we think

  201. it is all about

  202. outward performance,

  203. Jesus has some strong words.

  204. He is saying to us

  205. we need to clean up

  206. our act.

  207. It is not about

  208. being outwardly clean

  209. but inwardly clean.

  210. You see,

  211. for the Pharisees,

  212. outward was everything.

  213. And now,

  214. Jesus arrives for dinner

  215. at the Pharisees' house.

  216. And where has Jesus been

  217. all this time?

  218. Well, he has been hanging out

  219. with those tax collectors

  220. and those sinners.

  221. He has been hanging around

  222. with unclean people

  223. in unclean places.

  224. And he sits down

  225. for the meal

  226. and he doesn't even wash.

  227. Verse 39,

  228. Then the Lord said to him,

  229. Now then,

  230. you Pharisees,

  231. clean the outside

  232. of the cup and dish,

  233. but inside

  234. you are full of greed

  235. and wickedness.

  236. Outwardly,

  237. you look the real deal.

  238. You look like a Christian.

  239. Outwardly,

  240. you're setting the standard

  241. for every single person.

  242. But inside,

  243. you're rotten to the core.

  244. You need to get

  245. your hearts cleaned.

  246. And we can be so busy

  247. trying to give the impression

  248. we're clean.

  249. We come through the doors

  250. on a Sunday morning

  251. and we want people

  252. to think well of us.

  253. We want God

  254. to think well of us.

  255. We sing the song so well

  256. and nods

  257. at the right times

  258. and we can even

  259. take the Lord's Supper.

  260. But inside,

  261. inside we're unclean.

  262. Private sin festers away,

  263. eating us up.

  264. And it's all covered over

  265. by our public performance.

  266. Our Christian masks

  267. creating a good impression.

  268. But outward performance

  269. will never make

  270. the inside clean.

  271. Look at verse 40.

  272. You foolish people!

  273. Did not the one

  274. who made the outside

  275. make the inside only?

  276. In other words,

  277. there's only one

  278. who is going to

  279. clean the inside

  280. and that's the one

  281. who made you.

  282. But give what is inside

  283. the dish to the poor

  284. and everything

  285. will be clean for you.

  286. That last verse there,

  287. it's a little bit

  288. difficult to grasp

  289. but essentially

  290. Jesus is saying,

  291. look,

  292. you need to clean

  293. the inside.

  294. You need to start

  295. dealing with the heart

  296. and once you deal

  297. with the heart,

  298. then the outside,

  299. then you will be clean.

  300. Stop focusing

  301. on the externals

  302. and deal with the internals.

  303. Instead of putting

  304. on this drama

  305. and act

  306. and covering up

  307. with our masks,

  308. he's essentially

  309. saying to us,

  310. you need to run,

  311. you need to come to me.

  312. You see,

  313. here's these Pharisees

  314. sitting down

  315. for their dinner

  316. and they're wanting

  317. Jesus to wash.

  318. But what they can't see

  319. and what they can't grasp

  320. is that Jesus

  321. has come to wash us.

  322. Jesus has come

  323. to take our uncleanness

  324. and in its place

  325. cover us

  326. with his cleanness.

  327. Maybe you can remember

  328. some of the interactions

  329. Jesus had

  330. with different people.

  331. Go back to Luke

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  332. chapter 5.

  333. Luke chapter 5

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  334. and verse 12.

  335. Here Jesus is meeting

  336. with somebody

  337. who's considered

  338. unclean,

  339. unacceptable

  340. because he has

  341. a skin disease.

  342. Luke chapter 5

    Luke 5:12

  343. verse 12.

  344. When Jesus was

  345. in one of the towns,

  346. a man came along

  347. who was covered

  348. with leprosy.

  349. He's unclean.

  350. When he saw Jesus,

  351. he fell with his face

  352. to the ground

  353. and begged him,

  354. Lord,

  355. if you are willing,

  356. you can make me

  357. clean.

  358. And Jesus reached

  359. out his hand,

  360. touched the man.

  361. I am willing,

  362. he said.

  363. Be clean.

  364. And immediately

  365. the leprosy

  366. left him.

  367. You see,

  368. what Jesus

  369. was doing

  370. physically

  371. for people,

  372. cleaning them

  373. on the outside,

  374. Jesus is saying,

  375. look,

  376. this is a picture.

  377. This is what I am

  378. coming to do

  379. for you on the inside.

  380. Like that man

  381. with leprosy,

  382. we are to run

  383. to Jesus,

  384. to fall down

  385. before him,

  386. to reach out

  387. in faith,

  388. as it were,

  389. and ask him,

  390. will you touch

  391. my life?

  392. Will you

  393. clean me?

  394. And that's

  395. what Jesus does.

  396. As he goes

  397. to the cross,

  398. he takes

  399. our sin,

  400. my sin,

  401. he takes

  402. that upon himself

  403. and in its place

  404. he gives us

  405. his righteousness.

  406. He takes

  407. our sinful

  408. hearts

  409. and he gives

  410. us a new

  411. heart.

  412. He fills

  413. us with

  414. his Holy

  415. Spirit,

  416. so not only

  417. are we accepted

  418. and welcomed,

  419. but now our

  420. hearts have been

  421. changed so we

  422. can go the

  423. way that Jesus

  424. calls us to.

  425. You see,

  426. Jesus has

  427. not come for

  428. those who think

  429. they are outwardly

  430. clean.

  431. Jesus has

  432. come for those

  433. who know

  434. they are

  435. inwardly

  436. unclean.

  437. So first,

  438. Jesus says,

  439. clean up

  440. your act.

  441. Second,

  442. he says,

  443. check out

  444. your heart.

  445. Check out

  446. your heart.

  447. You see,

  448. it's easy,

  449. isn't it,

  450. to sit back

  451. and read

  452. this story

  453. and wag

  454. the finger

  455. at these

  456. Pharisees

  457. and wag

  458. the finger

  459. at all those

  460. we think

  461. are hypocrites.

  462. But we're

  463. to start

  464. examining

  465. our own

  466. hearts.

  467. As Jesus

  468. confronts and

  469. condemns the

  470. Pharisees,

  471. starting at

  472. verse 42

  473. with these,

  474. woe,

  475. woe to

  476. you.

  477. It's a

  478. pronouncement

  479. of judgment

  480. and condemnation

  481. for the

  482. way they're

  483. living.

  484. And as we

  485. follow through,

  486. it's,

  487. well,

  488. we're to

  489. examine our

  490. own hearts

  491. because we're

  492. to get rid

  493. of all

  494. outward

  495. pretense.

  496. Six things

  497. we are to

  498. look out

  499. for in

  500. our own

  501. hearts.

  502. First,

  503. false giving.

  504. Look at

  505. verse 42.

  506. Woe to you,

  507. Pharisees,

  508. because you

  509. give God

  510. a tenth

  511. of your

  512. mint,

  513. rue,

  514. and all

  515. other kinds

  516. of garden

  517. herbs,

  518. but you

  519. neglect justice

  520. and the

  521. love of

  522. God.

  523. These guys

  524. were so

  525. meticulous

  526. that they

  527. gave a

  528. tenth of

  529. everything

  530. that they

  531. owned or

  532. had.

  533. A tenth of

  534. everything.

  535. Outwardly,

  536. so generous.

  537. Even their

  538. little herb

  539. gardens that

  540. they had.

  541. A tenth

  542. went to

  543. God.

  544. So you

  545. can imagine

  546. them,

  547. there they

  548. are,

  549. going out

  550. to the

  551. garden,

  552. to their

  553. little

  554. mint tree,

  555. counting off

  556. the leaves.

  557. There's ten

  558. on it.

  559. Pull one

  560. of those

  561. leaves off

  562. and gives

  563. it to

  564. their neighbour.

  565. You know,

  566. this is

  567. giving a

  568. tenth,

  569. but not

  570. one leaf

  571. more.

  572. Nine

  573. for me.

  574. We too

  575. can be so

  576. careful in

  577. our giving,

  578. calculating

  579. how much

  580. we're going

  581. to give a

  582. tenth,

  583. but not a

  584. euro more.

  585. Neglecting

  586. justice and

  587. love for

  588. God.

  589. Oh,

  590. outwardly,

  591. it all looks

  592. good as the

  593. bags pass

  594. by and we

  595. drop in

  596. what we

  597. drop in.

  598. outwardly

  599. generous,

  600. but inwardly

  601. tight.

  602. Second,

  603. approval

  604. seeking,

  605. verse 43.

  606. Woe to

  607. you,

  608. Pharisees,

  609. because you

  610. love the

  611. most important

  612. seats in

  613. the synagogues

  614. and greetings

  615. in the

  616. marketplaces.

  617. They loved

  618. it.

  619. They loved

  620. going down

  621. into the

  622. town.

  623. The praise

  624. of others,

  625. oh,

  626. good morning,

  627. holy one.

  628. Oh,

  629. aren't they

  630. great.

  631. And don't

  632. you like a

  633. little bit of

  634. recognition?

  635. I certainly

  636. do.

  637. Oh,

  638. you're so

  639. good the

  640. way you

  641. care for

  642. people.

  643. Isn't

  644. he a

  645. wonderful

  646. pastor?

  647. Oh,

  648. what a

  649. great

  650. teacher he

  651. is.

  652. I love

  653. those

  654. recognitions.

  655. But

  656. sometimes

  657. what people

  658. think of

  659. us matters

  660. more than

  661. what God

  662. thinks of

  663. us.

  664. Craving

  665. human

  666. approval,

  667. desperate

  668. for

  669. status.

  670. We do

  671. our

  672. service,

  673. but actually

  674. seeking out

  675. the praise

  676. of others.

  677. Look at

  678. verse 44.

  679. Fake

  680. spirituality.

  681. Woe to

  682. you,

  683. because you

  684. are like

  685. unmarked

  686. graves,

  687. which men

  688. walk over

  689. without

  690. knowing

  691. it.

  692. Now,

  693. we could

  694. walk over

  695. an unmarked

  696. grave and

  697. it's,

  698. well,

  699. nothing happens,

  700. does it

  701. really?

  702. But for

  703. these guys,

  704. if you

  705. came into

  706. contact with

  707. the dead,

  708. even by

  709. walking on

  710. a grave,

  711. you became

  712. unclean,

  713. unacceptable.

  714. So Pharisees

  715. avoided the

  716. dead.

  717. It was a

  718. mark of

  719. their,

  720. well,

  721. their

  722. spirituality.

  723. spirituality.

  724. But Jesus

  725. is saying

  726. to them,

  727. actually,

  728. you're like

  729. the living

  730. dead.

  731. People who

  732. come into

  733. contact with

  734. you die.

  735. They become

  736. unclean.

  737. That's what

  738. you're really

  739. like.

  740. And so we

  741. can impress

  742. people with

  743. our spirituality.

  744. We stay

  745. away from

  746. those

  747. unclean

  748. people and

  749. those unclean

  750. places.

  751. Instead,

  752. we go to

  753. church with

  754. those good

  755. people and

  756. nice people.

  757. But we

  758. all leave

  759. unchanged.

  760. Nothing

  761. different

  762. happens.

  763. Spiritually

  764. dead.

  765. Remember

  766. here,

  767. we're to be

  768. examining our

  769. hearts.

  770. Verse

  771. 45,

  772. one of the

  773. experts of

  774. the law

  775. answered him,

  776. Teacher,

  777. when you

  778. say these

  779. things,

  780. you insult

  781. us also.

  782. Maybe

  783. Jesus now

  784. is going

  785. to tone

  786. it down

  787. a little

  788. and not

  789. be so

  790. offensive

  791. anymore.

  792. Not at

  793. all.

  794. Verse

  795. 46,

  796. Jesus

  797. replied,

  798. and you

  799. experts in

  800. the law,

  801. woe to

  802. you,

  803. because you

  804. load people

  805. down with

  806. burdens they

  807. can hardly

  808. carry,

  809. and you

  810. yourselves

  811. will not

  812. lift one

  813. little finger

  814. to help

  815. them.

  816. Look,

  817. you've

  818. just got to

  819. stop sinning.

  820. you've

  821. got to

  822. be a

  823. better

  824. person.

  825. You should

  826. obey more

  827. and start

  828. reading your

  829. Bible more

  830. and stop

  831. behaving like

  832. that,

  833. and why

  834. don't you

  835. pray a

  836. little and

  837. do this

  838. and don't

  839. do that,

  840. and why

  841. don't you

  842. just become

  843. like me?

  844. so easy

  845. to say,

  846. isn't it?

  847. Rather than

  848. actually getting

  849. alongside people

  850. and spending

  851. time with

  852. them and

  853. showing them

  854. God's grace

  855. and showing

  856. them how

  857. change is

  858. actually possible.

  859. It's easy

  860. to point the

  861. finger and

  862. condemn and

  863. judge,

  864. burdening

  865. people with

  866. all these

  867. rules,

  868. offering no

  869. grace and

  870. no help.

  871. what about

  872. in sincere

  873. worship?

  874. Look at

  875. verse 47.

  876. Woe to

  877. you because

  878. you build

  879. tombs for

  880. the prophets

  881. and it

  882. was your

  883. forefathers

  884. who killed

  885. them.

  886. So you

  887. testify that

  888. you approve

  889. of what your

  890. forefathers

  891. did.

  892. They killed

  893. the prophets

  894. and you

  895. build their

  896. tombs.

  897. Again,

  898. they love

  899. to talk

  900. the talk.

  901. Oh,

  902. those prophets.

  903. Great people.

  904. And build

  905. these great

  906. kind of

  907. memorials to

  908. these prophets

  909. of the past

  910. who were so

  911. great and

  912. mighty.

  913. Remember

  914. Jeremiah?

  915. What a

  916. great teacher

  917. he was.

  918. And Hosea?

  919. Boy,

  920. he knew how

  921. to preach

  922. a sermon.

  923. men.

  924. But they

  925. never ever

  926. listened to

  927. the prophets

  928. message.

  929. In fact,

  930. they hated

  931. the message

  932. so much

  933. their

  934. forefathers

  935. killed

  936. them.

  937. But let's

  938. not miss

  939. out on what

  940. Jesus is

  941. actually saying

  942. because,

  943. well,

  944. they want

  945. to get rid

  946. of Jesus

  947. too because

  948. he is the

  949. ultimate

  950. prophet.

  951. And they

  952. don't like

  953. what he's

  954. saying.

  955. So,

  956. verse 53,

  957. when Jesus

  958. left there,

  959. the Pharisees

  960. and the

  961. teachers of

  962. the law

  963. began to

  964. oppose him

  965. fiercely

  966. and to

  967. besiege him

  968. with many

  969. questions,

  970. waiting to

  971. catch him

  972. in something

  973. he might

  974. say.

  975. Now,

  976. we can

  977. bring our

  978. Bibles to

  979. church.

  980. Good at

  981. listening to

  982. sermons,

  983. taking down

  984. our notes,

  985. talking about

  986. our favorite

  987. preacher,

  988. John Piper,

  989. always great,

  990. isn't he?

  991. Tim Keller,

  992. fantastic.

  993. We can even

  994. attend Munster

  995. Bible College

  996. and earn

  997. ourselves a

  998. certificate.

  999. We worship

  1000. the Bible

  1001. and all

  1002. those who

  1003. teach it.

  1004. But yet it

  1005. is actually

  1006. possible never

  1007. to apply

  1008. God's Word

  1009. to our

  1010. hearts.

  1011. And never

  1012. to submit

  1013. to what

  1014. God's Word

  1015. is actually

  1016. saying to

  1017. us.

  1018. It's hard

  1019. to look

  1020. into our

  1021. hearts,

  1022. isn't it?

  1023. What about

  1024. this in

  1025. verse 52?

  1026. Woe to

  1027. you experts

  1028. in the

  1029. law,

  1030. because you

  1031. have taken

  1032. away the

  1033. key to

  1034. knowledge.

  1035. You

  1036. yourselves

  1037. have not

  1038. entered,

  1039. and you

  1040. have hindered

  1041. those who

  1042. are entering.

  1043. people

  1044. are

  1045. or they

  1046. claim to

  1047. be experts.

  1048. They say

  1049. they are the

  1050. real deal.

  1051. They even

  1052. look the

  1053. real deal,

  1054. spouting off

  1055. their knowledge,

  1056. telling everybody

  1057. how they should

  1058. live and what

  1059. they should

  1060. do.

  1061. But in

  1062. reality,

  1063. Jesus says,

  1064. you are

  1065. ignorant

  1066. obstacles.

  1067. You

  1068. hinder people

  1069. coming to

  1070. God.

  1071. You

  1072. see,

  1073. it is so

  1074. possible to

  1075. think that

  1076. our outward

  1077. performance,

  1078. that all

  1079. our show

  1080. and how

  1081. we behave

  1082. is that

  1083. it kind

  1084. of can

  1085. attract

  1086. people to

  1087. God and

  1088. bring people

  1089. closer to

  1090. him.

  1091. Well,

  1092. the reality

  1093. is with

  1094. all the

  1095. show,

  1096. it's just

  1097. obstacles.

  1098. Rather than

  1099. giving people

  1100. the key to

  1101. salvation,

  1102. it's as if

  1103. we locked

  1104. the door

  1105. and threw

  1106. the key

  1107. away.

  1108. It's easy

  1109. to point

  1110. fingers,

  1111. isn't it?

  1112. Because that's

  1113. what hypocrites

  1114. do.

  1115. Point their

  1116. fingers at

  1117. other people

  1118. and go,

  1119. I'm not

  1120. like them.

  1121. Setting our

  1122. own standards

  1123. that everybody

  1124. else must

  1125. meet.

  1126. Our own

  1127. little rules

  1128. rules that

  1129. everyone

  1130. must follow.

  1131. But Jesus

  1132. is saying,

  1133. look, if you

  1134. are going to

  1135. be my

  1136. disciple,

  1137. if you

  1138. are going

  1139. to follow

  1140. me,

  1141. then we

  1142. must first

  1143. learn to

  1144. examine our

  1145. own hearts.

  1146. What are

  1147. our hearts

  1148. like this

  1149. morning?

  1150. So first,

  1151. Jesus says,

  1152. clean up your

  1153. act.

  1154. check out

  1155. your heart.

  1156. And then

  1157. third,

  1158. guard against

  1159. the yeast.

  1160. Look again

  1161. at the middle

  1162. of chapter

  1163. 12,

  1164. verse 1.

  1165. As Jesus

  1166. is speaking

  1167. to his

  1168. disciples,

  1169. he says,

  1170. be on

  1171. your guard

  1172. against the

  1173. yeast of

  1174. the Pharisees,

  1175. which is

  1176. hypocrisy.

  1177. Be on your

  1178. guard.

  1179. We need

  1180. to be on

  1181. our guard.

  1182. We need

  1183. to be

  1184. paying

  1185. attention

  1186. for two

  1187. reasons.

  1188. First,

  1189. because

  1190. hypocrisy

  1191. spreads.

  1192. Do you

  1193. see the

  1194. connections

  1195. that he's

  1196. making in

  1197. verse 1?

  1198. He says,

  1199. be on your

  1200. guard against

  1201. the yeast

  1202. of the

  1203. Pharisees,

  1204. which is

  1205. hypocrisy.

  1206. Hypocrisy

  1207. is just like

  1208. yeast.

  1209. You only

  1210. need to put

  1211. a small

  1212. amount of

  1213. yeast into

  1214. a big

  1215. lump of

  1216. dough,

  1217. and it

  1218. begins to

  1219. spread.

  1220. Not one

  1221. part of

  1222. the dough

  1223. is left

  1224. unaffected.

  1225. It all

  1226. rises.

  1227. Now,

  1228. he says,

  1229. that's the

  1230. danger of

  1231. hypocrites.

  1232. Their

  1233. attitude

  1234. can spread.

  1235. It can

  1236. infiltrate

  1237. like a

  1238. deadly

  1239. poison.

  1240. And here's

  1241. how it can

  1242. spread.

  1243. spread.

  1244. And I

  1245. just have

  1246. to get

  1247. the book

  1248. because I

  1249. forgot to

  1250. get it

  1251. out.

  1252. Hang on.

  1253. Here's

  1254. how it

  1255. can

  1256. spread.

  1257. This

  1258. comes from

  1259. Mike

  1260. McKinley

  1261. in his

  1262. little

  1263. book.

  1264. He

  1265. says,

  1266. hypocrisy

  1267. remains a

  1268. spiritual

  1269. threat.

  1270. Whenever

  1271. Christians are

  1272. tempted to

  1273. pretend to

  1274. be more

  1275. holy than

  1276. they are,

  1277. whenever we

  1278. are unwilling

  1279. to confess

  1280. sin and

  1281. ask for

  1282. help,

  1283. whenever we

  1284. establish our

  1285. own man-made

  1286. rules as the

  1287. standard for

  1288. everyone's

  1289. holiness,

  1290. whenever we

  1291. are comfortable

  1292. with private

  1293. sins, so

  1294. long as they

  1295. do not come

  1296. to light,

  1297. in those

  1298. situations,

  1299. the yeast

  1300. of the

  1301. Pharisees is

  1302. present.

  1303. you see,

  1304. we are all

  1305. performers at

  1306. heart,

  1307. and the

  1308. danger is we

  1309. can all begin

  1310. to follow

  1311. each other,

  1312. to try and

  1313. follow one

  1314. another's

  1315. standards.

  1316. Watch out

  1317. for the

  1318. yeast of

  1319. hypocrisy.

  1320. Second,

  1321. we need to

  1322. be on our

  1323. guard because

  1324. our hearts

  1325. will be

  1326. exposed.

  1327. You see,

  1328. the thing about

  1329. hypocrisy is

  1330. we think we

  1331. can get away

  1332. with it,

  1333. because it's

  1334. all an act,

  1335. it's all a

  1336. show,

  1337. and because it's

  1338. an act,

  1339. well,

  1340. we fool

  1341. people,

  1342. and people

  1343. know,

  1344. nobody really

  1345. knows what's

  1346. actually going

  1347. on inside our

  1348. hearts.

  1349. We can hide

  1350. it and cover

  1351. it all up,

  1352. but look at

  1353. verse 2.

  1354. There is

  1355. nothing

  1356. concealed

  1357. that will

  1358. not be

  1359. disclosed

  1360. or hidden

  1361. that will

  1362. not be

  1363. made known.

  1364. Or we can

  1365. point the

  1366. fingers and

  1367. complain about

  1368. what everybody

  1369. else does,

  1370. but what's

  1371. done in the

  1372. secret,

  1373. that's

  1374. going to

  1375. be made

  1376. known to.

  1377. Verse 3,

  1378. what we have

  1379. said in the

  1380. dark will

  1381. be heard in

  1382. the daylight,

  1383. and what we

  1384. have whispered

  1385. in the ear

  1386. in the inner

  1387. room will

  1388. be proclaimed

  1389. from the

  1390. roofs.

  1391. We may

  1392. play a good

  1393. game,

  1394. but God

  1395. sees my

  1396. heart,

  1397. and he

  1398. sees your

  1399. heart.

  1400. Nothing is

  1401. hidden from

  1402. him.

  1403. And one

  1404. day the

  1405. masks are

  1406. going to

  1407. be lifted,

  1408. the drama

  1409. will all

  1410. stop,

  1411. and we

  1412. will be

  1413. shown for

  1414. who we

  1415. really are.

  1416. You see,

  1417. the Pharisees

  1418. thought that

  1419. Jesus needed

  1420. a wash,

  1421. and we

  1422. probably think

  1423. at times that

  1424. it's everybody

  1425. else who

  1426. needs to be

  1427. cleaned up,

  1428. clean.

  1429. But Jesus

  1430. has come to

  1431. wash me,

  1432. and he's

  1433. come to

  1434. clean you.

  1435. He's not

  1436. come for

  1437. those who

  1438. think they

  1439. are outwardly

  1440. clean.

  1441. He comes

  1442. for those

  1443. who know

  1444. they are

  1445. inwardly

  1446. unclean.

  1447. He says,

  1448. come to

  1449. me.

  1450. You can

  1451. take off

  1452. your masks.

  1453. you don't

  1454. need to

  1455. hide from

  1456. me,

  1457. because I

  1458. have dealt

  1459. with your

  1460. sin at

  1461. the cross.

  1462. I have

  1463. taken it

  1464. all away,

  1465. and have

  1466. covered you

  1467. with my

  1468. purity,

  1469. with my

  1470. beauty,

  1471. with my

  1472. goodness.

  1473. you don't

  1474. need to

  1475. hide.

  1476. You can

  1477. run to

  1478. me.

  1479. We're

  1480. going to

  1481. sing in

  1482. a minute

  1483. an old

  1484. song.

  1485. Let me

  1486. just quote

  1487. to you

  1488. one verse

  1489. from it.

  1490. As we

  1491. reflect on

  1492. what we

  1493. have heard,

  1494. it says,

  1495. nothing in

  1496. my hand

  1497. I bring,

  1498. simply to

  1499. the cross

  1500. I cling.

  1501. Naked

  1502. come to

  1503. thee for

  1504. dress,

  1505. helpless

  1506. look to

  1507. thee for

  1508. grace.

  1509. Foul I

  1510. to the

  1511. fountain

  1512. fly,

  1513. wash me

  1514. saviour,

  1515. or I

  1516. die.

  1517. That is

  1518. the invitation

  1519. for us

  1520. all to

  1521. run to

  1522. our

  1523. saviour

  1524. with an

  1525. undivided

  1526. heart,

  1527. to come

  1528. with a

  1529. broken

  1530. spirit,

  1531. to come

  1532. with a

  1533. broken

  1534. and

  1535. contrite

  1536. heart,

  1537. and let

  1538. him deal

  1539. with us.

  1540. Let's

  1541. stand

  1542. together

  1543. as we

  1544. sing this

  1545. song,

  1546. and may

  1547. it be a

  1548. prayer in

  1549. response

  1550. that God

  1551. would change

  1552. us and

  1553. clean us.

  1554. from the

  1555. through
