  1. Are those 18 who died when the tower of Siloam fell on them, do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?

  2. I tell you, no. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

  3. Then he told this parable.

  4. A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit in it, but he did not find any.

  5. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard,

  6. For three years now, I have been coming to look for fruit in this fig tree and haven't found any.

  7. Cut it down. Why should it use up the soil?

  8. Sir, the man replied, leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig round it and fertilize it.

  9. If it bears fruit next year, fine. If not, then cut it down.

  10. On the Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues.

  11. And a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for 18 years.

  12. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.

  13. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her,

  14. Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.

  15. Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

  16. Indignant, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,

  17. the synagogue ruler said to the people,

  18. There are six days for work, so come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.

  19. The Lord answered him,

  20. You hypocrites!

  21. Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?

  22. Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for 18 long years,

  23. be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?

  24. When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,

  25. but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

  26. Thank you, Sam, and thank you for handing out the pens and notes there.

  27. We're looking at our series through Luke's Gospel.

  28. Today we reach chapter 13.

  29. We're going to be touching on all of it.

  30. We didn't read all of it, but that's okay.

  31. We are going to look at all of it.

  32. And if you've missed any of the talks along the way,

  33. you can always go back and listen.

  34. You can find them on the church website.

  35. And if you have any comments about the church website,

  36. we'd love to have your feedback on those sorts of things as well.

  37. And because we're covering such a large section this morning,

  38. there'll be bits that we don't touch on,

  39. and you might have questions about that,

  40. so please feel free to ask afterwards.

  41. Come and have a chat about it.

  42. We'd love to talk to you further.

  43. Thank you very much, Sam, for doing that.

  44. Well, let's pray and ask for God's help.

  45. Father, as we gather together to hear your word,

  46. we want to hear it carefully and clearly.

  47. We want to hear the seriousness of what you are saying

  48. and the implications that it has upon our lives today

  49. and as we go about our life this coming week.

  50. Father, would you reach into our hearts

  51. and grab a hold of us

  52. and change us and conform us

  53. so that we are people who live by your agenda

  54. and according to your will and purpose.

  55. Father, we come before you

  56. and ask that you would help us

  57. to put aside what we think is important

  58. and listen afresh to you

  59. to what is truly important.

  60. Help us then, we ask in Jesus' name.

  61. Amen.

  62. What's the time?

  63. How many times do we ask that in a day?

  64. Our whole day is ordered, isn't it?

  65. And structured by time.

  66. 7 a.m.

  67. Time to get up

  68. or turn off the alarm and roll back to sleep

  69. if you're like me.

  70. 12.30.

  71. Lunchtime.

  72. Time to pick up the kids.

  73. Time to go to the shops.

  74. 8 p.m.

  75. Time for that meeting.

  76. Time to go out.

  77. Time to go to bed.

  78. Time reminds us what needs to be done.

  79. In fact, the closer we get to that time,

  80. the more urgent things become.

  81. Well, Luke wants us to keep an eye on the time.

  82. Before we get stuck into chapter 13,

  83. there are two times that we need to adjust our life to.

  84. Two times that will help us understand chapter 13.

  85. The first time that we've got to be focused on

  86. is cross time.

  87. Go back to chapter 9.

  88. Just a few pages to chapter 9.

  89. Chapter 9 is a turning point in Luke's Gospel.

  90. Jesus has just identified himself to be the Messiah.

  91. That is God's anointed king, God's saving king.

  92. And here's what he says about himself in chapter 9, verse 22.

  93. And Jesus said,

  94. The Son of Man,

  95. his favourite title for referring to himself,

  96. he says,

  97. The Son of Man must suffer many things,

  98. be rejected by the elders,

  99. the chief priests,

  100. the teachers of the law,

  101. and that he must be killed,

  102. and on the third day be raised to life.

  103. So here, for the first time,

  104. Jesus is making it crystal clear to us.

  105. He's telling us that he must die.

  106. He must go to the cross.

  107. And from this point forward,

  108. everything in Luke is heading towards Jerusalem,

  109. where Jesus will die.

  110. So, if you look at verse 51 of chapter 9,

  111. it reads,

  112. As the time approached for Jesus to be taken up into heaven,

  113. Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

  114. Jerusalem is the place of execution.

  115. In Jerusalem, Jesus will die.

  116. And from this point onwards,

  117. time and time again,

  118. Luke keeps telling us that

  119. Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem.

  120. Because, at the cross,

  121. salvation comes.

  122. So the first timing that we need to be adjusted to is

  123. cross time.

  124. The second timing is judgment time.

  125. Have a look at chapter 12.

  126. Chapter 12 obviously comes before chapter 13,

  127. and in chapter 12,

  128. Jesus has been telling a parable,

  129. a story about his return in judgment.

  130. So chapter 12, verse 40.

  131. And he's telling us there,

  132. Jesus says,

  133. You also must be ready,

  134. because the Son of Man,

  135. again, that same title that he gives to himself,

  136. will come at an hour or at a time

  137. when you do not expect him.

  138. One day,

  139. the risen Lord Jesus is going to return in judgment.

  140. And he's saying,

  141. we've got to be ready for this.

  142. And to help us to understand how we need to be ready,

  143. he tells another short story.

  144. Verse 57.

  145. It's like a little illustration.

  146. Have a look at chapter 12,

  147. verse 57.

  148. Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?

  149. As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate,

  150. so he's saying,

  151. look, put yourself in this situation.

  152. As you're going with your adversary to the magistrate,

  153. try hard to be reconciled on the way,

  154. or your adversary may drag you off to the judge,

  155. and the judge turn you over to the officer,

  156. and the officer throw you into prison.

  157. In other words,

  158. time is running out.

  159. There is an urgency.

  160. We've got to sort things out with God.

  161. You see,

  162. cross time prepares us

  163. for the coming of Jesus.

  164. And that's the time frame we're in right now.

  165. The cross has happened.

  166. But judgment is yet to come.

  167. This is the time frame we're in.

  168. Salvation is here today.

  169. Judgment is coming.

  170. And this is the time by which we're to adjust our life to.

  171. This is the time that our clock should be altered to.

  172. And Luke wants us to take these two timings with us

  173. as we head into chapter 13.

  174. So three things we need to deal with urgently

  175. while we have time.

  176. First, time to repent.

  177. Into chapter 13 we go.

  178. Jesus impresses us with the need to repent.

  179. Look at verse 3.

  180. But unless you repent,

  181. you too will all perish.

  182. And in case we haven't got it,

  183. the end of verse 5.

  184. But unless you repent,

  185. you too will all perish.

  186. To perish is to face that judgment of God.

  187. A fearful and eternal separation from God

  188. for all eternity.

  189. Hell itself.

  190. So there is this pressing urgency

  191. to repent.

  192. And repentance implies two things.

  193. It implies turning from something.

  194. So you're going in this direction.

  195. And you've got to turn around 180

  196. and go this direction.

  197. Turn from something.

  198. And turn to something.

  199. So turn from your own desires and dreams.

  200. And turn to Jesus

  201. and pursue His will for your life.

  202. Repentance isn't just a one-off event.

  203. It is a daily action

  204. where we repent continually.

  205. It means dying to self.

  206. Dying to living my way

  207. and turning and saying,

  208. I am living for Christ.

  209. And we continually need to alter ourselves

  210. and repent.

  211. His glory.

  212. Not my glory.

  213. His agenda.

  214. My agenda.

  215. And the reason we need to repent.

  216. Well, there's two reasons

  217. in this little section.

  218. First,

  219. the reason to repent

  220. is because life

  221. is fragile.

  222. We don't know

  223. when life will end.

  224. You see,

  225. Jesus' call for repentance

  226. comes in the context

  227. of sudden

  228. and surprising death.

  229. Look at verse 1.

  230. Now,

  231. there were some present

  232. at that time

  233. who told Jesus

  234. about the Galileans

  235. whose blood

  236. Pilate had mixed

  237. with their sacrifices.

  238. It sounds horrific,

  239. doesn't it?

  240. It was a horrific murder

  241. that took place.

  242. Pilate, of course,

  243. was the Roman prefect,

  244. the one who was in charge.

  245. He was in charge

  246. of military and security.

  247. And from history,

  248. history tells us

  249. he was quite a brutal man.

  250. And to remind the people

  251. who was in charge,

  252. he would just often

  253. have them killed.

  254. And here we're reading

  255. in chapter 13, verse 1,

  256. he has people from Galilee

  257. knocked off.

  258. One minute they're on their way

  259. to the temple

  260. and the next minute

  261. they're dead.

  262. Or look at verse 4.

  263. Jesus says,

  264. what about those 18 people

  265. who died

  266. when the tower in Siloam

  267. fell on them?

  268. One minute they're out

  269. looking at all the views

  270. around them,

  271. perhaps looking down

  272. at their friends

  273. down below.

  274. The next minute

  275. the tower collapses

  276. and they're dead.

  277. And the presumption

  278. behind both of these

  279. sudden and surprising deaths

  280. is that they must have been

  281. involved in some terrible sin.

  282. God must be punishing them.

  283. But look what it says

  284. in verse 5.

  285. I tell you,

  286. no.

  287. But unless you repent,

  288. you too

  289. will all perish.

  290. No, they're not worse sinners

  291. than you or I.

  292. They are not more guilty

  293. than you or I.

  294. In fact,

  295. I could be

  296. a worse sinner.

  297. You could be more guilty

  298. than these people

  299. that's been talked about here.

  300. The point is,

  301. life is

  302. fragile.

  303. We will all die

  304. and we do not know when.

  305. There is no guarantee

  306. that we're going to grow old.

  307. Sometimes death

  308. is sudden

  309. and surprising.

  310. An accident

  311. in a car.

  312. An untreatable disease.

  313. Caught in an act

  314. of terrorism.

  315. One minute

  316. enjoying life.

  317. The next minute

  318. we're dead.

  319. Life is fragile.

  320. we need to repent.

  321. Well,

  322. the second reason

  323. we need to repent

  324. is,

  325. well,

  326. mercy

  327. will cease.

  328. God longs

  329. for people

  330. to repent.

  331. And the fact

  332. that we are still

  333. alive today

  334. is a sign

  335. of God's mercy.

  336. Look at verse 6.

  337. Then Jesus

  338. told this parable.

  339. A man had a fig tree

  340. growing in his vineyard.

  341. Now,

  342. we kind of

  343. associate vineyards

  344. with grapes,

  345. but they did

  346. sow fig trees

  347. there too,

  348. apparently.

  349. And he went

  350. to look for fruit

  351. on it,

  352. but he didn't

  353. find any.

  354. So he said

  355. to the man

  356. who took care

  357. of the vineyard,

  358. look,

  359. for three years

  360. now I've been

  361. coming to look

  362. for fruit

  363. off this fig tree

  364. and I haven't

  365. found any.

  366. So just cut it down.

  367. Why should it

  368. use up the soil?

  369. Why should it

  370. waste space

  371. if it's not

  372. producing fruit?

  373. Well, the point

  374. is simple,

  375. isn't it?

  376. God looks

  377. for repentant

  378. lives.

  379. He looks

  380. for fruit.

  381. He looks

  382. for change

  383. and transformation.

  384. And if there's

  385. no fruit,

  386. there will be

  387. judgment.

  388. But,

  389. let's not

  390. miss this.

  391. He is

  392. merciful

  393. and gracious.

  394. He gives

  395. people more

  396. time.

  397. So look at

  398. verse 8.

  399. Sir,

  400. the man replied,

  401. leave it

  402. alone

  403. one more

  404. year.

  405. Give the fig tree

  406. another year,

  407. another season.

  408. I'll dig

  409. round it,

  410. I'll fertilise it.

  411. If it bears

  412. fruit next year,

  413. fine,

  414. then it will

  415. have been

  416. worth it.

  417. If not,

  418. if there's

  419. no fruit,

  420. cut it down.

  421. every day

  422. we live

  423. is a day

  424. of mercy.

  425. God is

  426. giving

  427. opportunity

  428. to each

  429. one of us.

  430. But a day

  431. will come

  432. when we

  433. look for

  434. mercy

  435. and it

  436. will be

  437. too late

  438. for judgment

  439. will have

  440. come.

  441. So he

  442. says,

  443. repent

  444. because life

  445. is fragile

  446. and mercy

  447. will

  448. cease.

  449. But not

  450. only is it

  451. a time

  452. to repent,

  453. so let's

  454. get our

  455. timings

  456. right again.

  457. We've got

  458. the time

  459. of the

  460. cross,

  461. the time

  462. of judgment

  463. that shapes

  464. and affects

  465. how we

  466. live today.

  467. And the

  468. first timing

  469. is,

  470. well,

  471. it means

  472. that we

  473. are to

  474. be people

  475. of repentance.

  476. Second,

  477. a time

  478. to receive.

  479. Look at

  480. verse 10.

  481. On the

  482. Sabbath,

  483. Jesus was

  484. teaching in

  485. one of the

  486. synagogues.

  487. And while

  488. he's there,

  489. as we read,

  490. he heals

  491. this woman.

  492. And it

  493. has quite

  494. an impact,

  495. verse 14.

  496. Indignant

  497. because Jesus

  498. had healed

  499. on the

  500. Sabbath,

  501. the synagogue

  502. leader said

  503. to the

  504. people,

  505. there are

  506. six days

  507. for work,

  508. so come

  509. and be

  510. healed on

  511. those days,

  512. not on

  513. the Sabbath.

  514. You see,

  515. the Sabbath

  516. was,

  517. according to

  518. the law,

  519. a time

  520. of rest.

  521. No work

  522. was to

  523. be done,

  524. even if

  525. somebody

  526. was in

  527. desperate

  528. need,

  529. even if

  530. there was

  531. a terrible

  532. situation,

  533. no work,

  534. especially

  535. for this

  536. woman.

  537. But for

  538. Jesus,

  539. there is

  540. an urgency.

  541. No,

  542. it can't

  543. wait.

  544. This

  545. woman is

  546. in need.

  547. She needs

  548. to be

  549. healed

  550. now.

  551. You see,

  552. Jesus is

  553. saying,

  554. look,

  555. I am

  556. the one

  557. who has

  558. come to

  559. bring

  560. rest,

  561. true rest.

  562. I am

  563. the one

  564. who has

  565. come to

  566. bring

  567. redemption.

  568. My work

  569. is to

  570. restore

  571. people.

  572. No,

  573. it can't

  574. wait.

  575. Now

  576. is the

  577. time

  578. to heal.

  579. And the

  580. healing is

  581. seen in

  582. two ways.

  583. First,

  584. free from

  585. slavery.

  586. Look at

  587. how this

  588. woman's

  589. illness is

  590. described in

  591. verse 11.

  592. A woman

  593. was there

  594. who had

  595. been

  596. crippled

  597. by a

  598. spirit

  599. for 18

  600. years.

  601. That's a

  602. significant

  603. amount of

  604. time for

  605. anybody.

  606. She was

  607. bent over

  608. and could

  609. not straighten

  610. up at

  611. all.

  612. And then

  613. Jesus

  614. explains the

  615. reason.

  616. Jump down

  617. to verse

  618. 16.

  619. The middle

  620. of verse

  621. 16.

  622. It tells

  623. us there

  624. that

  625. Satan

  626. has kept

  627. her bound

  628. for 18

  629. long

  630. years.

  631. She's

  632. been kept

  633. bound

  634. by Satan.

  635. It's

  636. like a

  637. spiritual

  638. slavery.

  639. And her

  640. physical

  641. condition

  642. is even

  643. a picture

  644. of her

  645. slavery.

  646. She's

  647. weighed

  648. down.

  649. She's

  650. bent

  651. over.

  652. And

  653. Jesus

  654. has come

  655. into the

  656. midst

  657. of her

  658. life

  659. to free

  660. her

  661. from her

  662. slavery.

  663. But it

  664. is so

  665. much more

  666. than just

  667. physical.

  668. Think

  669. back to

  670. how God's

  671. people

  672. were slaves

  673. in Egypt.

  674. Listen

  675. to how

  676. God

  677. describes

  678. his

  679. rescue

  680. of them.

  681. Here's

  682. a quote

  683. from

  684. Leviticus.

  685. It's a

  686. summary of

  687. all that

  688. God

  689. did.

  690. He

  691. says,

  692. I am

  693. the Lord

  694. your God

  695. who

  696. brought

  697. you out

  698. of

  699. Egypt

  700. so that

  701. you would

  702. no longer

  703. be slaves

  704. to the

  705. Egyptians.

  706. I

  707. broke

  708. the bars

  709. of your

  710. yoke

  711. and

  712. enabled

  713. you

  714. to walk

  715. with

  716. your

  717. heads

  718. held

  719. high.

  720. You

  721. see,

  722. the imagery,

  723. the picture,

  724. as Jesus

  725. comes to

  726. this woman,

  727. he's saying,

  728. this is what

  729. I've come

  730. to do

  731. for you.

  732. Through

  733. my death,

  734. I am

  735. going to

  736. free you

  737. from a

  738. greater

  739. slavery,

  740. slavery to

  741. sin and

  742. to Satan.

  743. I have

  744. come to

  745. take the

  746. burden of

  747. sin from

  748. you,

  749. the weight

  750. of judgment

  751. that you

  752. carry upon

  753. your backs.

  754. I am

  755. going to

  756. release you

  757. from it.

  758. Go back

  759. to verse

  760. 12.

  761. When Jesus

  762. saw her,

  763. he called

  764. her forward

  765. and said

  766. to her,

  767. woman,

  768. you are

  769. set free

  770. from your

  771. infirmity.

  772. then he

  773. put his

  774. hands on

  775. her and

  776. immediately

  777. she

  778. straightened

  779. up and

  780. praised

  781. God.

  782. You

  783. see,

  784. Jesus

  785. sets us

  786. free so

  787. that we

  788. can walk

  789. with our

  790. heads held

  791. high,

  792. no longer

  793. burdened in

  794. guilt and

  795. shame,

  796. no longer

  797. having to

  798. look down

  799. and hide.

  800. We've been

  801. released.

  802. we've been

  803. set free

  804. from slavery

  805. so now

  806. is the

  807. time to

  808. receive

  809. Jesus.

  810. Second

  811. reason to

  812. receive

  813. slavery,

  814. free from

  815. slavery and

  816. a new

  817. relationship.

  818. Look at

  819. how Jesus

  820. refers to

  821. this woman

  822. back in

  823. verse 12.

  824. When Jesus

  825. saw her,

  826. he called

  827. her forward

  828. and said

  829. to her,

  830. woman,

  831. he doesn't

  832. even ask,

  833. sorry,

  834. what's your

  835. name there?

  836. And then

  837. call her

  838. out.

  839. It's just

  840. woman.

  841. But then

  842. look how

  843. she's referred

  844. to after

  845. the healing.

  846. Down in

  847. verse 16.

  848. Then should

  849. not this

  850. woman,

  851. a daughter

  852. of Abraham,

  853. whom Satan

  854. has kept

  855. bound for

  856. 18 long

  857. years,

  858. be set free

  859. in the

  860. Sabbath day

  861. from what

  862. bound her?

  863. daughter

  864. of Abraham.

  865. Abraham,

  866. of course,

  867. was the

  868. great father

  869. figure for

  870. all God's

  871. children.

  872. He was

  873. the great

  874. example for

  875. all people,

  876. an example

  877. of faith.

  878. He was a

  879. man who

  880. believed

  881. God's promises

  882. and trusted

  883. God's promises.

  884. So all who

  885. have faith

  886. in God,

  887. all who

  888. trust and

  889. believe in

  890. him,

  891. become

  892. children

  893. of Abraham,

  894. become

  895. children

  896. of God.

  897. And now

  898. Jesus turns

  899. to her,

  900. he called

  901. her woman

  902. and now

  903. he calls

  904. her daughter

  905. because there's

  906. been faith.

  907. And this is

  908. what we can

  909. enjoy when we

  910. receive Jesus

  911. in faith,

  912. this personal

  913. and intimate

  914. relationship with

  915. God from

  916. no name

  917. to God's

  918. child,

  919. my daughter.

  920. my son.

  921. Now is

  922. the time

  923. to receive

  924. Jesus.

  925. So,

  926. let's get

  927. our timings

  928. right.

  929. It's cross

  930. time,

  931. salvation

  932. has come,

  933. the time

  934. of judgment

  935. is yet to

  936. come,

  937. we do not

  938. know when,

  939. and that

  940. impresses

  941. upon us

  942. an urgency,

  943. a time

  944. to repent,

  945. a time

  946. to receive,

  947. and the

  948. implication

  949. out of all

  950. of this

  951. and the

  952. big application

  953. for us

  954. today

  955. is it

  956. implies a

  957. time to

  958. reach out.

  959. Look at

  960. verse 22.

  961. Then Jesus

  962. went through

  963. the towns

  964. and villages

  965. teaching

  966. as he

  967. made his

  968. way to

  969. Jerusalem.

  970. There's the

  971. indication

  972. again,

  973. Jesus is

  974. going to

  975. Jerusalem.

  976. Why?

  977. I'm going

  978. to die.

  979. This is

  980. why I'm

  981. here.

  982. It's a

  983. time of

  984. salvation.

  985. Verse 23,

  986. someone asked

  987. him,

  988. Lord,

  989. are only a

  990. few people

  991. going to be

  992. saved?

  993. What an

  994. excellent

  995. question.

  996. And I

  997. know it's

  998. a question

  999. that lots

  1000. of us

  1001. have asked

  1002. many,

  1003. many times.

  1004. Are only

  1005. a few

  1006. people going

  1007. to be

  1008. saved?

  1009. Who's

  1010. going to

  1011. repent?

  1012. Who is

  1013. going to

  1014. receive

  1015. Jesus?

  1016. How many,

  1017. Lord,

  1018. how many

  1019. of my

  1020. friends,

  1021. how many

  1022. of my

  1023. family,

  1024. how many

  1025. are going

  1026. to follow

  1027. Jesus?

  1028. How many

  1029. in

  1030. Carragalline

  1031. are going

  1032. to follow

  1033. Jesus?

  1034. Well,

  1035. Jesus answers

  1036. the question

  1037. in two

  1038. parts.

  1039. First,

  1040. he tells

  1041. us,

  1042. look,

  1043. the door

  1044. is open.

  1045. look at the

  1046. rest of

  1047. verse 23.

  1048. He said

  1049. to them,

  1050. make every

  1051. effort to

  1052. enter through

  1053. the narrow

  1054. door,

  1055. because many,

  1056. I tell you,

  1057. will try to

  1058. enter and

  1059. will not be

  1060. able to do

  1061. so.

  1062. There's only

  1063. one way,

  1064. and that's

  1065. through

  1066. Christ.

  1067. Verse 25,

  1068. once the

  1069. owner of the

  1070. house gets

  1071. up and

  1072. closes the

  1073. door,

  1074. you will

  1075. stand outside

  1076. knocking and

  1077. pleading,

  1078. Sir,

  1079. open the

  1080. door for

  1081. us.

  1082. But he

  1083. will answer,

  1084. I don't

  1085. know you

  1086. or where

  1087. you come

  1088. from.

  1089. Today,

  1090. the door

  1091. is open.

  1092. Right now,

  1093. the door

  1094. is open.

  1095. Every day

  1096. is an

  1097. opportunity

  1098. to repent

  1099. and receive.

  1100. Every day

  1101. that the

  1102. door is

  1103. open is

  1104. a day

  1105. of God's

  1106. immense

  1107. grace and

  1108. mercy that

  1109. flows towards

  1110. us and

  1111. to our

  1112. community and

  1113. to our

  1114. world.

  1115. But one

  1116. day,

  1117. a day is

  1118. going to

  1119. come when

  1120. that door

  1121. will close.

  1122. End of

  1123. verse 25,

  1124. and you

  1125. will stand

  1126. outside knocking

  1127. and pleading,

  1128. Sir,

  1129. open the

  1130. door for

  1131. us.

  1132. But he

  1133. will answer,

  1134. I don't

  1135. know you

  1136. or where

  1137. you've come

  1138. from.

  1139. The time

  1140. of salvation

  1141. will be

  1142. over,

  1143. and the

  1144. time of

  1145. judgment

  1146. will have

  1147. come.

  1148. come.

  1149. Now

  1150. is the

  1151. time.

  1152. Today,

  1153. reach out

  1154. with the

  1155. good news

  1156. of Jesus

  1157. Christ.

  1158. His

  1159. second

  1160. answer

  1161. is not

  1162. only is

  1163. the door

  1164. open,

  1165. but he

  1166. wants us

  1167. to know

  1168. that the

  1169. nations

  1170. will come.

  1171. While

  1172. there will

  1173. be people

  1174. who refuse

  1175. to repent

  1176. and refuse

  1177. to receive,

  1178. look what

  1179. he says,

  1180. verse 29.

  1181. Look,

  1182. people

  1183. will come

  1184. from east

  1185. and west

  1186. and north

  1187. and south

  1188. and will

  1189. take their

  1190. places at

  1191. the feast

  1192. in the

  1193. kingdom of

  1194. God.

  1195. What a

  1196. picture,

  1197. what a

  1198. sight.

  1199. People

  1200. from every

  1201. nation

  1202. across this

  1203. world,

  1204. people of

  1205. all languages

  1206. and races

  1207. gathering

  1208. together for

  1209. the ultimate

  1210. feast in

  1211. the kingdom

  1212. of God.

  1213. People

  1214. from throughout

  1215. all time

  1216. and all

  1217. ages,

  1218. people who

  1219. have repented

  1220. and received

  1221. will enjoy

  1222. God's salvation

  1223. in all its

  1224. fullness.

  1225. People

  1226. will come,

  1227. Jesus tells

  1228. us.

  1229. People from

  1230. all kinds

  1231. of places

  1232. that we

  1233. never thought

  1234. possible.

  1235. now is

  1236. the time.

  1237. The

  1238. nations

  1239. will

  1240. come.

  1241. Reach

  1242. out with

  1243. the good

  1244. news of

  1245. Jesus.

  1246. And the

  1247. implication is

  1248. crystal clear.

  1249. It's just

  1250. not easy

  1251. to miss,

  1252. is it?

  1253. if the

  1254. door is

  1255. open today,

  1256. if the

  1257. nations are

  1258. going to

  1259. come,

  1260. then we

  1261. have a

  1262. responsibility,

  1263. a

  1264. responsibility

  1265. with this

  1266. good news.

  1267. How are

  1268. people going

  1269. to repent?

  1270. How are

  1271. people going

  1272. to receive?

  1273. unless they

  1274. hear the

  1275. good news

  1276. about Christ.

  1277. So how

  1278. do we

  1279. respond to

  1280. that?

  1281. Well,

  1282. two things,

  1283. I haven't

  1284. got it on

  1285. the screen,

  1286. but you

  1287. can remember

  1288. them.

  1289. The first

  1290. thing is

  1291. pray.

  1292. Pray for

  1293. our community.

  1294. Pray for

  1295. our friends.

  1296. Pray for

  1297. our family.

  1298. Pray for

  1299. the people

  1300. we're going

  1301. to meet

  1302. tomorrow at

  1303. work.

  1304. And if

  1305. we're in

  1306. any doubt

  1307. about God's

  1308. heart for

  1309. his people,

  1310. look at

  1311. what Jesus

  1312. says,

  1313. verse 34.

  1314. Verse 34,

  1315. Jerusalem,

  1316. Jerusalem,

  1317. you who

  1318. kill the

  1319. prophets and

  1320. stone those

  1321. sent to

  1322. you, how

  1323. often I

  1324. have longed

  1325. to gather

  1326. your children

  1327. together as

  1328. a hen

  1329. gathers her

  1330. chicks under

  1331. her wings and

  1332. you were not

  1333. willing.

  1334. Pleading.

  1335. Jesus

  1336. longs to

  1337. gather his

  1338. people, to

  1339. come under

  1340. the safety

  1341. and security

  1342. of the cross.

  1343. That is his

  1344. heart's desire

  1345. that people

  1346. would come.

  1347. come.

  1348. So this

  1349. Wednesday, in

  1350. our home

  1351. groups, you'll

  1352. see it in the

  1353. news sheet,

  1354. there's a

  1355. little note

  1356. there, that

  1357. we're going to

  1358. simply meet

  1359. together in our

  1360. home groups to

  1361. pray for our

  1362. community.

  1363. As we think

  1364. about Christmas

  1365. coming, we

  1366. want to pray

  1367. for our

  1368. community.

  1369. community.

  1370. So if you

  1371. have people

  1372. that you

  1373. want to

  1374. pray for,

  1375. people in

  1376. your family,

  1377. your friends,

  1378. we're simply

  1379. just going to

  1380. pray.

  1381. Pray because I

  1382. can't change

  1383. anyone and you

  1384. can't change

  1385. anyone.

  1386. Pray that God

  1387. would work in

  1388. people's lives,

  1389. that they will

  1390. repent and that

  1391. they will receive

  1392. Jesus.

  1393. So come, I

  1394. encourage you,

  1395. join with us,

  1396. if at all

  1397. possible, come

  1398. and pray.

  1399. Pray for our

  1400. community.

  1401. The second

  1402. thing we can

  1403. do is to

  1404. share the good

  1405. news about

  1406. Jesus.

  1407. As part of

  1408. outreach for

  1409. us as a

  1410. church, we're

  1411. going to be

  1412. doing two

  1413. things.

  1414. We're going

  1415. to be giving

  1416. out calendars,

  1417. bringing them

  1418. round to some

  1419. of the homes in

  1420. Carragalline,

  1421. knocking on the

  1422. door, wishing

  1423. people a happy

  1424. Christmas,

  1425. presenting them

  1426. with a gift,

  1427. or if you

  1428. can't do that,

  1429. just simply

  1430. putting it

  1431. through the

  1432. letterbox.

  1433. What impact

  1434. will it have?

  1435. I don't know.

  1436. But I do

  1437. know that just

  1438. the other week,

  1439. very recently,

  1440. I had a

  1441. phone call,

  1442. and it was

  1443. about a lady,

  1444. rang her up.

  1445. She had got a

  1446. calendar last

  1447. year, and had

  1448. been looking at

  1449. it, and had

  1450. seen the little

  1451. note about

  1452. further information,

  1453. and asked would

  1454. we send out

  1455. some stuff to

  1456. her to read.

  1457. That's one

  1458. lady.

  1459. Is it worth

  1460. it?

  1461. Absolutely.

  1462. share the

  1463. good news of

  1464. Jesus with

  1465. others in a

  1466. very simple

  1467. way.

  1468. Join with us

  1469. on those two

  1470. Wednesdays as

  1471. our home

  1472. groups gather

  1473. with us, if

  1474. at all

  1475. possible.

  1476. And the

  1477. other one is

  1478. to hand out

  1479. the invite to

  1480. our carol

  1481. service.

  1482. I'm not

  1483. sure where

  1484. mine is

  1485. here.

  1486. there's

  1487. bunches of

  1488. them at the

  1489. table.

  1490. Thank you.

  1491. Yeah,

  1492. one.

  1493. Thanks,

  1494. Joy.

  1495. And take

  1496. them with

  1497. you.

  1498. You can

  1499. simply give

  1500. them out to

  1501. your friend,

  1502. to a

  1503. neighbour,

  1504. somebody who

  1505. you know.

  1506. They

  1507. mightn't

  1508. come,

  1509. that's

  1510. okay.

  1511. But they're

  1512. not going to

  1513. come if they

  1514. don't get

  1515. invited.

  1516. To come and

  1517. hear songs

  1518. about the

  1519. Saviour,

  1520. about the

  1521. Lord Jesus,

  1522. to hear the

  1523. good news,

  1524. of what

  1525. he has

  1526. done.

  1527. Luke wants

  1528. us to keep

  1529. an eye on

  1530. the time,

  1531. the time of

  1532. the cross.

  1533. That's the

  1534. time we're

  1535. living in

  1536. right now.

  1537. Judgment

  1538. will come.

  1539. It

  1540. impresses upon

  1541. us an

  1542. urgency,

  1543. time to

  1544. repent,

  1545. time to

  1546. receive,

  1547. and time

  1548. reach out,

  1549. time to

  1550. pray,

  1551. to ask

  1552. our Father

  1553. to do a

  1554. work in

  1555. people's

  1556. lives,

  1557. and a

  1558. time to

  1559. share.

  1560. Let's just

  1561. take a

  1562. moment in

  1563. the quietness

  1564. to respond

  1565. ourselves to

  1566. that.

  1567. moment in

  1568. the quietness.

  1569. Maybe it's

  1570. you who

  1571. need to

  1572. repent and

  1573. receive.

  1574. Maybe we

  1575. need to

  1576. think about

  1577. how I'm

  1578. going to

  1579. pray for

  1580. the

  1581. community,

  1582. and how

  1583. I can

  1584. put this

  1585. into

  1586. action.

  1587. Just take

  1588. a moment to

  1589. think those

  1590. things through

  1591. and respond

  1592. to God

  1593. in the

  1594. quietness.
