  1. A man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.

  2. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table.

  3. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

  4. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side.

  5. The rich man also died and was buried.

  6. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.

  7. So he called to him,

  8. Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,

  9. because I am in agony in this fire.

  10. But Abraham replied,

  11. Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things.

  12. But now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

  13. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place,

  14. so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.

  15. He answered,

  16. Then I beg you, Father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers.

  17. Let him warm them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.

  18. Abraham replied,

  19. They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them.

  20. No, Father Abraham, he said,

  21. but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.

  22. He said to him,

  23. If you do not listen to Moses and the prophets,

  24. then they will not be convinced, even if someone rises from the dead.

  25. Well, let's pray together.

  26. Father, as we come to your word, to your truth,

  27. we pray that it would shape our hearts,

  28. challenge us where we need to be challenged,

  29. and that it would cause us to see

  30. that Christ is enough,

  31. and that Christ is sufficient.

  32. Father, do a work in our lives today.

  33. Make us that we would become more like the Lord Jesus,

  34. in every way.

  35. We pray this for your glory and for our good.

  36. Amen.

  37. Well, if you won the Euro Millions,

  38. what would you do with it?

  39. What do you dream you could do?

  40. Would you pay off your mortgage?

  41. Maybe buy a new car,

  42. or take a holiday,

  43. do a world travel trip?

  44. Well, you mightn't win the Euro Millions.

  45. It's a very slim chance that we will.

  46. But what if you were to suddenly have access to a little extra cash?

  47. Maybe some money is left to you in a will.

  48. Perhaps you get a promotion,

  49. start a new job,

  50. and it's got a better salary.

  51. Or some savings account has matured.

  52. But what do you fantasise about

  53. if you just had a little bit more money?

  54. A bit more spare cash in the wallet

  55. at the end of the week?

  56. What would you do?

  57. Would you get a new phone?

  58. An upgrade,

  59. or decorate the house,

  60. or just treat yourself,

  61. and go shopping,

  62. and buy something for me?

  63. Well, money's not a bad thing.

  64. It's not wrong to have money.

  65. Money is actually a good gift from God.

  66. But we need to be so, so careful.

  67. Money is powerful.

  68. It has the power to control us

  69. and consume us.

  70. Look at what Jesus says back in verse 13.

  71. This comes actually at the end of another parable about money.

  72. So verse 13, it says,

  73. No one can serve two masters.

  74. Either you will hate the one

  75. and love the other,

  76. or you will be devoted to one

  77. and despise the other.

  78. You cannot serve both God and money.

  79. The Pharisees, who loved money,

  80. heard all this

  81. and were sneering at Jesus.

  82. So in response,

  83. Jesus tells a story.

  84. Now as we go through this story,

  85. I know it's familiar to a lot of you,

  86. but as we go through it,

  87. I want us to be asking this question.

  88. Who am I in the story?

  89. Not who would I like to be,

  90. but who am I?

  91. First,

  92. in the story,

  93. there are two kinds of people.

  94. First we have the rich man,

  95. verse 19.

  96. There was a rich man

  97. who was dressed in purple and fine linen,

  98. which was kind of the designer clothing of the day,

  99. and lived in luxury every day.

  100. He's Mr. Giorgio Armani.

  101. That fine-cut suit.

  102. A Versace watch hanging loose on his wrist.

  103. The bling.

  104. Gated playhouse for all his parties.

  105. And of course, his pride and joy,

  106. his personalised Lamborghini.

  107. He's a wealthy man.

  108. Now before you say,

  109. that's not me,

  110. I'm not rich,

  111. I'm not in that category,

  112. consider this.

  113. More than a billion people

  114. live on less than a dollar a day.

  115. Almost two billion others

  116. live on less than two dollars a day.

  117. Nearly half the world's population

  118. are struggling to have adequate food,

  119. water,

  120. and shelter.

  121. Most people live and die in poverty.

  122. In the eyes of the world,

  123. we are Mr. and Mrs. Rich.

  124. And living here in Ireland

  125. means we're actually in the top 20%

  126. of the world's most well-off.

  127. Second, we're introduced to the poor man.

  128. Verse 20.

  129. At his gate,

  130. this great mansion,

  131. with a gate to keep certain people out,

  132. was laid a beggar named Lazarus,

  133. covered with sores,

  134. and longing to eat

  135. what fell from the rich man's table,

  136. the scraps.

  137. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

  138. He's a neglected,

  139. malnourished,

  140. homeless beggar.

  141. Today, we might think of him

  142. as being one of those two billion

  143. who live on less than a couple dollars a day.

  144. His family,

  145. more than likely,

  146. live beside a disease-ridden open sewer.

  147. He rummages through the city dump,

  148. hoping to find someone's scraps.

  149. No access to clean running water.

  150. No toilet.

  151. No access to medicine or a doctor.

  152. The contrast between these two characters

  153. couldn't be greater.

  154. One lives in luxury,

  155. the other in great poverty.

  156. One dressed in fine clothes,

  157. the other dressed in sores.

  158. who are the rich

  159. of the world today,

  160. and who are the poor.

  161. But this is a story

  162. so much more than just physical

  163. or material wealth.

  164. You see,

  165. while the world longs to be materially rich

  166. and chase after money,

  167. we are to strive

  168. to be spiritually poor.

  169. Mike McKinley,

  170. one author,

  171. puts it like this.

  172. A person's economic condition

  173. has the potential

  174. to help or hinder them

  175. when it comes to having

  176. the spiritual characteristics

  177. that God values

  178. and rewards.

  179. Let me read that again.

  180. It's important.

  181. A person's economic condition

  182. has the potential

  183. to help or hinder them

  184. when it comes to having

  185. the spiritual characteristics

  186. that God values

  187. and rewards.

  188. Let me explain that.

  189. So, if you are materially rich,

  190. it's much harder

  191. to see your spiritual need.

  192. Because if you are rich

  193. and wealthy,

  194. well, you're self-sufficient.

  195. You're independent.

  196. You don't need anybody's help.

  197. You can do it alone.

  198. But if you're materially poor,

  199. then it is much easier

  200. to see your spiritual need

  201. because you are others reliant.

  202. Your economic condition

  203. means that you are dependent.

  204. You desperately need

  205. the help of somebody else

  206. to intervene.

  207. Now, think about

  208. the spiritual characteristics

  209. we should have

  210. when coming to God.

  211. We are to come

  212. like the poor,

  213. desperate,

  214. in need,

  215. longing for help,

  216. begging for mercy.

  217. We are to come

  218. like the lost son

  219. back in chapter 15.

  220. Have a look back there

  221. to chapter 15.

  222. Again, another well-known story

  223. about the lost son

  224. and the elder brother.

  225. Let's pick it up

  226. in verse 17.

  227. Here we have an example

  228. of what it is to come,

  229. begging for mercy,

  230. desperate for help.

  231. Verse 17,

  232. so the son,

  233. when he had spent everything

  234. that he had had

  235. and he had nothing left,

  236. when he came to his senses,

  237. he said,

  238. how many of my father's

  239. hired servants

  240. have food to spare

  241. and here I am

  242. starving to death.

  243. I will set out

  244. and go back to my father

  245. and say to him,

  246. Father,

  247. I have sinned

  248. against heaven

  249. and against you.

  250. I am no longer worthy

  251. to be called your son.

  252. Make me like one

  253. of your hired servants.

  254. So he got up

  255. and went to his father.

  256. You see,

  257. that's the condition

  258. we are to go to God.

  259. We are to go

  260. as hopeless,

  261. helpless,

  262. dependent,

  263. completely reliant

  264. on God's grace

  265. to be spiritually poor,

  266. longing for God's intervention.

  267. There is no place,

  268. there is no room

  269. for self-righteous,

  270. arrogant,

  271. hard-hearted attitudes

  272. when coming to God.

  273. So as we read

  274. through this story,

  275. who are you

  276. in the story?

  277. Are you the rich

  278. or are you the poor?

  279. Are you somebody

  280. who seeks material wealth

  281. or are you striving

  282. for spiritual poverty?

  283. Second,

  284. there are two ways

  285. to live.

  286. The two men die,

  287. don't they?

  288. The rich man

  289. goes to Hades,

  290. we'll come back

  291. to that in a minute,

  292. and the poor man

  293. goes to heaven.

  294. Now,

  295. again,

  296. we need to be clear

  297. about this.

  298. It's not their economic status

  299. that determines

  300. their fate.

  301. It's not because

  302. one has more money

  303. that he ends up

  304. in one place

  305. and one has less

  306. that he ends up

  307. in another.

  308. It's not that at all.

  309. The Bible is much broader

  310. than that to say

  311. that those who

  312. are rich

  313. do go to heaven

  314. and some who are

  315. materially poor

  316. don't.

  317. It boils down to

  318. how we live

  319. in this life.

  320. That's what will

  321. determine

  322. our fate.

  323. And there's two ways

  324. we can live.

  325. First,

  326. there's the way

  327. of faith.

  328. Look at verse 22.

  329. The time came

  330. when the beggar died

  331. and the angels

  332. carried him

  333. to Abraham's side.

  334. Again,

  335. we're going to get

  336. back to what

  337. that means,

  338. but for now

  339. I want us to see

  340. that Lazarus

  341. was a man

  342. who lived

  343. by faith.

  344. Lazarus

  345. means

  346. the one

  347. God

  348. helps.

  349. That's what

  350. his name means,

  351. the one

  352. God helps.

  353. Lazarus

  354. knows he's

  355. in desperate

  356. need.

  357. He's a man

  358. in poverty

  359. and in response

  360. God helps.

  361. And even

  362. though he's

  363. lived in poverty,

  364. even though

  365. he dies

  366. in poverty,

  367. he never

  368. turns away

  369. from God.

  370. There's nothing

  371. in this story

  372. that tells us

  373. that he curses

  374. God and

  375. is giving off

  376. and he's bitter

  377. and angry

  378. about his life.

  379. No,

  380. it seems

  381. that Abraham

  382. was a man

  383. of faith.

  384. You see,

  385. true faith

  386. is not determined

  387. by what I have

  388. and what I can get.

  389. This kind of

  390. attitude that says,

  391. oh,

  392. I'll believe

  393. if you get me

  394. a better job.

  395. Or I'll follow

  396. you,

  397. Lord,

  398. if you can make

  399. me more

  400. financially stable.

  401. True faith

  402. always says,

  403. God is enough.

  404. God is sufficient.

  405. Even when I have

  406. nothing,

  407. even if I should

  408. lose my job,

  409. even if I can't

  410. afford the mortgage

  411. this week,

  412. even if I should

  413. end up sick,

  414. true faith

  415. will always say,

  416. God is enough.

  417. God is sufficient.

  418. I will trust

  419. him.

  420. And Abraham

  421. is a man

  422. who has said,

  423. God is

  424. enough.

  425. So there's

  426. the way of faith

  427. and then we have

  428. second,

  429. the way of self.

  430. In contrast,

  431. the rich man,

  432. it seems,

  433. lives by his

  434. own resources.

  435. He lived

  436. by his means

  437. and he is

  438. trusted in

  439. his means.

  440. He shows

  441. no

  442. genuine

  443. desire

  444. to repent.

  445. Look at

  446. verse 24.

  447. So he's

  448. in Hades,

  449. he's looking

  450. up,

  451. he sees

  452. Abraham

  453. and Lazarus

  454. by his

  455. side,

  456. verse 24,

  457. so he

  458. called to

  459. him,

  460. Father Abraham,

  461. have pity

  462. on me

  463. and send

  464. Lazarus

  465. to dip

  466. the tip

  467. of his

  468. finger

  469. in water

  470. and coo

  471. my tongue

  472. because I

  473. am in

  474. agony

  475. in this

  476. fire.

  477. verse 27,

  478. he begs

  479. the Father,

  480. send Lazarus

  481. to my

  482. family.

  483. Now,

  484. how arrogant

  485. is that?

  486. The rich man

  487. is still

  488. thinking about

  489. himself.

  490. He's been

  491. judged for

  492. how he's

  493. living or

  494. how he has

  495. lived,

  496. but he still

  497. can't see

  498. the mistakes

  499. he's made.

  500. Rather than

  501. show any

  502. kind of

  503. remorse,

  504. he's too

  505. busy expecting

  506. people to

  507. come and

  508. serve him.

  509. Abraham,

  510. why don't

  511. you go and

  512. tell Lazarus

  513. to come

  514. down here

  515. and give

  516. me a

  517. bit of

  518. water?

  519. Abraham,

  520. tell Lazarus

  521. to go and

  522. tell and

  523. warn my

  524. brothers.

  525. He's still

  526. dishing out

  527. orders as

  528. if Lazarus,

  529. the poor

  530. man,

  531. somehow owed

  532. him a

  533. favour.

  534. It's so

  535. tragic.

  536. He's being

  537. judged,

  538. unabashed,

  539. and he

  540. still can't

  541. see it.

  542. Rather than

  543. see how he

  544. has lived

  545. all his

  546. life,

  547. and repent

  548. if that

  549. were still

  550. possible,

  551. he is so

  552. self-absorbed

  553. with his

  554. own needs.

  555. There is

  556. no genuine

  557. desire to

  558. repent.

  559. And

  560. second,

  561. he has no

  562. practical love

  563. for the

  564. poor.

  565. Look at

  566. verse 25.

  567. Abraham

  568. replied,

  569. Son,

  570. remember that

  571. in your

  572. lifetime,

  573. you received

  574. your good

  575. things,

  576. while Lazarus

  577. received bad

  578. things.

  579. But now he

  580. is comforted

  581. here,

  582. and you

  583. are in

  584. agony.

  585. The rich

  586. man was so

  587. blessed during

  588. his lifetime,

  589. but yet he

  590. gave nothing

  591. to relieve the

  592. suffering of

  593. Lazarus.

  594. Every day he

  595. would have

  596. driven out of

  597. his gates in

  598. his flashy

  599. car.

  600. Every day he

  601. ignored the

  602. beggar as he

  603. renovated and

  604. redecorated his

  605. gated mansion,

  606. and laid on

  607. his lavish

  608. parties.

  609. He did

  610. absolutely

  611. nothing with

  612. the resources

  613. at his

  614. exposure.

  615. He lived

  616. as if the

  617. beggar never

  618. even existed.

  619. In fact,

  620. the dogs

  621. showed more

  622. compassion to

  623. Lazarus as

  624. they came and

  625. licked his

  626. sores.

  627. The rich

  628. man has

  629. lived a

  630. self-absorbed

  631. life,

  632. thinking only

  633. of himself.

  634. You see,

  635. true faith

  636. has this

  637. genuine desire

  638. to repent

  639. and give

  640. practical help

  641. to the

  642. poor.

  643. So if I'm

  644. saying,

  645. oh yes,

  646. I'm a

  647. person of

  648. true faith,

  649. well,

  650. true faith

  651. prays this

  652. kind of

  653. prayer.

  654. Lord,

  655. forgive me

  656. for my

  657. selfish greed.

  658. Have you

  659. ever thought

  660. of ourselves

  661. as being

  662. greedy?

  663. I'm sorry

  664. for ignoring

  665. those in

  666. desperate need.

  667. Forgive me

  668. for wasting

  669. my money

  670. on things

  671. I don't

  672. need and

  673. stuffing my

  674. life with

  675. things I

  676. will never

  677. use while

  678. countless

  679. millions

  680. starve and

  681. die.

  682. Lord,

  683. change my

  684. heart from

  685. a greedy

  686. hoarder

  687. to a

  688. generous

  689. giver.

  690. James,

  691. who wrote

  692. one of the

  693. letters in

  694. the Bible,

  695. put it

  696. this way,

  697. religion

  698. that God

  699. our Father

  700. accepts as

  701. pure and

  702. faultless is

  703. this,

  704. to look

  705. after orphans

  706. and widows

  707. in their

  708. distress.

  709. You see,

  710. the orphan

  711. and the

  712. widow were

  713. categories for

  714. those who

  715. are most

  716. vulnerable

  717. and most

  718. poor,

  719. those who

  720. have nothing,

  721. those who

  722. can do

  723. nothing for

  724. themselves.

  725. So true

  726. religion,

  727. true faith

  728. is expressed

  729. in giving

  730. to the

  731. 750 million

  732. who do

  733. not have

  734. access to

  735. clean water.

  736. Think of

  737. that every

  738. time you

  739. turn on

  740. your tap

  741. to wash

  742. your teeth.

  743. True faith

  744. is expressed

  745. in helping

  746. the 24,000

  747. children who

  748. will die

  749. this very

  750. day because

  751. they don't

  752. have enough

  753. food.

  754. And if

  755. we're finding

  756. it hard to

  757. kind of get

  758. our head

  759. around these

  760. figures,

  761. to put

  762. that into

  763. perspective,

  764. thus the

  765. total population

  766. of our

  767. nation's

  768. children wiped

  769. out in just

  770. over a

  771. month because

  772. they don't

  773. have enough

  774. food.

  775. Think of

  776. that as

  777. we stuff

  778. our face

  779. on Christmas

  780. Day.

  781. Stephen

  782. Um,

  783. who is a

  784. pastor and

  785. author,

  786. puts it

  787. like this,

  788. children of

  789. this world,

  790. as in those

  791. who live

  792. for self,

  793. ruthlessly

  794. manage their

  795. resources to

  796. secure their

  797. future.

  798. Children of

  799. God, those

  800. who live by

  801. faith,

  802. graciously manage

  803. their resources

  804. because their

  805. future is

  806. already secure.

  807. power.

  808. So how do

  809. you live?

  810. Who are you

  811. in this

  812. story?

  813. Do you

  814. live for

  815. self?

  816. Or are we

  817. people who

  818. live by

  819. faith?

  820. So there

  821. are two

  822. kinds of

  823. people,

  824. two ways

  825. to live,

  826. and two

  827. eternal

  828. destinies.

  829. Well, what

  830. happens to

  831. every person

  832. happens to

  833. them.

  834. The time

  835. came when

  836. they died.

  837. Rich or

  838. poor,

  839. plenty or

  840. in want,

  841. we will

  842. all die.

  843. and how

  844. we have

  845. lived our

  846. life on

  847. this earth

  848. will determine

  849. our eternal

  850. destiny.

  851. The two

  852. destinies

  853. are spelled

  854. out for us.

  855. The first,

  856. those who

  857. are spiritually

  858. poor,

  859. those who

  860. know they

  861. desperately need

  862. God's

  863. intervention and

  864. help,

  865. those who

  866. live by

  867. faith can

  868. look forward

  869. to eternal

  870. pleasures.

  871. Look at

  872. verse 22.

  873. The time

  874. came when

  875. the beggar

  876. died and

  877. the angels

  878. carried him

  879. to Abraham's

  880. side.

  881. Abraham,

  882. of course,

  883. was the

  884. great father

  885. figure of

  886. God's

  887. children,

  888. the man

  889. of faith.

  890. And so

  891. to be at

  892. Abraham's

  893. side is

  894. really in

  895. a sense a

  896. picture of

  897. saying this

  898. person,

  899. Lazarus,

  900. is now in

  901. the presence

  902. of God.

  903. And he

  904. now receives

  905. a rich

  906. welcome

  907. into God's

  908. heaven.

  909. A place

  910. of unceasing

  911. joy and

  912. eternal

  913. pleasures.

  914. Everything

  915. that Lazarus

  916. had experienced

  917. in life

  918. has now been

  919. completely

  920. switched and

  921. reversed.

  922. Again, look

  923. at verse 25.

  924. Abraham replied,

  925. Son, remember

  926. that in your

  927. lifetime you

  928. received your

  929. good things

  930. while Lazarus

  931. received bad

  932. things.

  933. but now

  934. Lazarus is

  935. comforted

  936. here and

  937. you are in

  938. agony.

  939. He's gone

  940. from a

  941. lifetime of

  942. agony to

  943. an eternity

  944. of comfort.

  945. Remember how

  946. the psalmist

  947. put it.

  948. We read this

  949. at the very

  950. beginning

  951. this morning.

  952. Psalm 16

    Psalms 16:11

  953. verse 11,

  954. you made

  955. known to

  956. me the

  957. path of

  958. life.

  959. You fill

  960. me with

  961. joy in

  962. your presence,

  963. with eternal

  964. pleasures

  965. at your

  966. right hand.

  967. That is the

  968. wonderful

  969. destiny

  970. of those

  971. who are

  972. spiritually

  973. poor and

  974. those who

  975. live by

  976. faith.

  977. but there

  978. is another

  979. destiny that

  980. is spelled

  981. out.

  982. For those

  983. who live

  984. for material

  985. wealth,

  986. for those

  987. who live

  988. for self,

  989. will experience

  990. eternal

  991. suffering.

  992. Look at

  993. the second

  994. part of

  995. verse 22.

  996. The rich

  997. man also

  998. died and

  999. was buried.

  1000. in

  1001. Hades

  1002. where he

  1003. was in

  1004. torment.

  1005. Hades

  1006. simply means

  1007. the realm

  1008. of the

  1009. dead.

  1010. In other

  1011. words,

  1012. he's talking

  1013. here about

  1014. hell.

  1015. And while

  1016. we don't

  1017. know everything

  1018. about hell,

  1019. just as we

  1020. don't know

  1021. what everything

  1022. is going to

  1023. be like in

  1024. heaven,

  1025. there are

  1026. three things

  1027. here I think

  1028. in this

  1029. text that

  1030. tell us

  1031. what we

  1032. can be

  1033. sure of

  1034. about hell.

  1035. First,

  1036. hell is a

  1037. conscious

  1038. reality.

  1039. It's a

  1040. conscious

  1041. reality,

  1042. verse 24.

  1043. Do you

  1044. see what he

  1045. cries out?

  1046. Father

  1047. Abraham,

  1048. have pity

  1049. on me

  1050. and send

  1051. Lazarus to

  1052. dip the tip

  1053. of his

  1054. finger in

  1055. water and

  1056. cool my

  1057. tongue because

  1058. I am in

  1059. agony in

  1060. this fire.

  1061. many people

  1062. think that

  1063. when we

  1064. die,

  1065. that's it,

  1066. we just

  1067. die.

  1068. It's an

  1069. eternal

  1070. unconsciousness.

  1071. There's no

  1072. more feeling

  1073. or anything

  1074. else.

  1075. Believers,

  1076. yes,

  1077. they live for

  1078. eternity,

  1079. but those

  1080. who do not

  1081. believe,

  1082. they just

  1083. die and

  1084. it just

  1085. finishes.

  1086. But that's

  1087. not true.

  1088. The rich

  1089. man is in

  1090. hell and

  1091. he can feel

  1092. his senses

  1093. are working

  1094. and he

  1095. longs for

  1096. relief.

  1097. It's a

  1098. conscious

  1099. reality.

  1100. second,

  1101. it is

  1102. unending

  1103. suffering.

  1104. The rich

  1105. man twice

  1106. describes where

  1107. he is as

  1108. torment

  1109. and agony.

  1110. Look at the

  1111. end of verse

  1112. 28.

  1113. He's

  1114. pleading,

  1115. he says,

  1116. so that they

  1117. will not

  1118. come to

  1119. this place

  1120. of torment.

  1121. It's a

  1122. place of

  1123. unending

  1124. suffering.

  1125. Now,

  1126. it's hard

  1127. for us

  1128. to imagine

  1129. what that

  1130. would actually

  1131. be like.

  1132. But we

  1133. can be

  1134. sure it

  1135. is the

  1136. absence of

  1137. peace and

  1138. rest and

  1139. contentment.

  1140. No

  1141. kindness,

  1142. no

  1143. compassion,

  1144. no

  1145. mercy.

  1146. An

  1147. endless

  1148. cycle of

  1149. doing wrong

  1150. and

  1151. punishment

  1152. and

  1153. doing

  1154. wrong

  1155. and

  1156. punishment

  1157. and

  1158. doing

  1159. wrong

  1160. and

  1161. punishment

  1162. and

  1163. no

  1164. end.

  1165. On and

  1166. on it

  1167. goes.

  1168. Year

  1169. after year.

  1170. It's

  1171. life

  1172. without

  1173. God.

  1174. Which

  1175. shows us

  1176. the third

  1177. picture.

  1178. it is

  1179. eternal

  1180. separation.

  1181. Verse 26.

  1182. He says,

  1183. besides all

  1184. of this,

  1185. between us

  1186. and you,

  1187. a great

  1188. chasm has

  1189. been set

  1190. in place

  1191. so that

  1192. those who

  1193. want to

  1194. go from

  1195. here to

  1196. you

  1197. cannot

  1198. and those

  1199. who want

  1200. to cross

  1201. over from

  1202. there to

  1203. us

  1204. can't.

  1205. Hell

  1206. is

  1207. separate

  1208. from

  1209. heaven.

  1210. There's

  1211. no point

  1212. in trying

  1213. to think

  1214. that somehow

  1215. through the

  1216. course of

  1217. eternity

  1218. they're

  1219. somehow

  1220. going to

  1221. merge.

  1222. They're

  1223. not.

  1224. People

  1225. who are

  1226. in hell

  1227. will be

  1228. in hell.

  1229. People

  1230. who are

  1231. in heaven

  1232. will be

  1233. in heaven.

  1234. It's

  1235. separation

  1236. from God.

  1237. And

  1238. separation

  1239. from God

  1240. is separation

  1241. from all

  1242. that is

  1243. good and

  1244. beautiful

  1245. for all

  1246. eternity.

  1247. imagine

  1248. an

  1249. eternity

  1250. without

  1251. the

  1252. good

  1253. gifts

  1254. of

  1255. God.

  1256. Laughter,

  1257. creativity,

  1258. joy,

  1259. happiness,

  1260. love,

  1261. peace,

  1262. and friendship

  1263. and comfort.

  1264. Imagine

  1265. an

  1266. eternity

  1267. without

  1268. any

  1269. justice

  1270. or

  1271. forgiveness.

  1272. happiness.

  1273. It's

  1274. what we

  1275. all

  1276. deserve

  1277. because

  1278. we are

  1279. all rich

  1280. and we've

  1281. all been

  1282. greedy

  1283. and we've

  1284. all wasted

  1285. the resources

  1286. that God

  1287. has given

  1288. while

  1289. countless

  1290. millions

  1291. starve

  1292. and die

  1293. every

  1294. single

  1295. day.

  1296. You see,

  1297. Jesus has

  1298. already told

  1299. us about

  1300. these

  1301. destinies.

  1302. Have a

  1303. look back

  1304. at

  1305. chapter

  1306. 6.

  1307. Luke

    Luke 6:20

  1308. chapter

  1309. 6

  1310. verse

  1311. 20.

  1312. Luke

  1313. 20.

  1314. Luke

    Luke 6:20

  1315. 6

  1316. verse

  1317. 20.

  1318. Jesus

  1319. looking at

  1320. his

  1321. disciples

  1322. said,

  1323. blessed

  1324. are you

  1325. who are

  1326. poor

  1327. and the

  1328. context

  1329. here is

  1330. those who

  1331. are

  1332. spiritually

  1333. poor,

  1334. those who

  1335. come with

  1336. empty hands

  1337. pleading and

  1338. knowing their

  1339. needing of

  1340. mercy and

  1341. grace.

  1342. Blessed

  1343. are you

  1344. who are

  1345. poor for

  1346. yours is

  1347. the kingdom

  1348. of God.

  1349. Blessed

  1350. are you

  1351. who hunger

  1352. now for

  1353. you will

  1354. be satisfied.

  1355. Blessed

  1356. are you

  1357. who weep

  1358. now for

  1359. you will

  1360. laugh.

  1361. Verse

  1362. 24.

  1363. But woe

  1364. to you

  1365. who are

  1366. rich.

  1367. Woe

  1368. to you

  1369. who live

  1370. the way

  1371. of self.

  1372. For

  1373. you have

  1374. already

  1375. received

  1376. your

  1377. comfort.

  1378. Woe

  1379. to you

  1380. who are

  1381. well fed

  1382. now for

  1383. you will

  1384. go hungry

  1385. and woe

  1386. to you

  1387. who laugh

  1388. now for

  1389. you will

  1390. mourn

  1391. and weep.

  1392. hell is

  1393. eternal

  1394. suffering

  1395. but

  1396. heaven

  1397. heaven

  1398. is

  1399. eternal

  1400. pleasures.

  1401. Who

  1402. are we

  1403. in the

  1404. story?

  1405. What

  1406. is your

  1407. destiny?

  1408. What

  1409. is my

  1410. destiny?

  1411. destiny.

  1412. The next

  1413. heading I

  1414. changed so

  1415. it should

  1416. read

  1417. secure

  1418. future.

  1419. Secure

  1420. future.

  1421. As we

  1422. think about

  1423. these two

  1424. eternal

  1425. destinies

  1426. we

  1427. mustn't

  1428. think that

  1429. God is

  1430. somehow

  1431. unfair.

  1432. That

  1433. somehow

  1434. well

  1435. God is

  1436. not told

  1437. me and

  1438. God never

  1439. warned me

  1440. and if

  1441. I knew

  1442. that life

  1443. would end

  1444. up like

  1445. this then

  1446. I would

  1447. have done

  1448. something

  1449. about it.

  1450. If God

  1451. wanted me

  1452. to believe

  1453. if God

  1454. wanted me

  1455. to change

  1456. how I

  1457. thought about

  1458. my money

  1459. and the

  1460. resources

  1461. that I

  1462. have

  1463. well then

  1464. he would

  1465. have done

  1466. some

  1467. miracle

  1468. and I

  1469. would have

  1470. changed

  1471. my attitude.

  1472. Well

  1473. God is

  1474. not

  1475. unfair.

  1476. God

  1477. has been

  1478. crystal

  1479. clear.

  1480. look at

  1481. verse 27

  1482. he

  1483. answered

  1484. the rich

  1485. man

  1486. answered

  1487. then I

  1488. beg you

  1489. father

  1490. send

  1491. Lazarus

  1492. to my

  1493. family

  1494. for I

  1495. have

  1496. five

  1497. brothers

  1498. let him

  1499. warn

  1500. them

  1501. so that

  1502. they

  1503. will not

  1504. also

  1505. come to

  1506. this

  1507. place

  1508. of

  1509. torment.

  1510. Look

  1511. if I

  1512. had

  1513. known

  1514. how

  1515. my

  1516. life

  1517. was

  1518. going

  1519. to

  1520. end

  1521. then

  1522. I

  1523. could

  1524. have

  1525. done

  1526. something

  1527. about

  1528. it

  1529. so

  1530. why

  1531. don't

  1532. you

  1533. go

  1534. and

  1535. tell

  1536. my

  1537. brother

  1538. so

  1539. that

  1540. they

  1541. don't

  1542. end

  1543. up

  1544. in

  1545. the

  1546. same

  1547. way

  1548. verse 29

  1549. Abraham

  1550. replied

  1551. they

  1552. have

  1553. Moses

  1554. and

  1555. the

  1556. prophets

  1557. let

  1558. them

  1559. listen

  1560. to

  1561. them

  1562. the

  1563. point

  1564. is

  1565. the

  1566. rich

  1567. man

  1568. had

  1569. the

  1570. same

  1571. message

  1572. too

  1573. he

  1574. had

  1575. the

  1576. same

  1577. scriptures

  1578. the

  1579. message

  1580. of

  1581. the

  1582. Moses

  1583. and

  1584. the

  1585. prophets

  1586. that

  1587. was

  1588. the

  1589. Old

  1590. Testament

  1591. it

  1592. is

  1593. not

  1594. that

  1595. no

  1596. one

  1597. told

  1598. him

  1599. it

  1600. is

  1601. that

  1602. he

  1603. just

  1604. never

  1605. listened

  1606. verse

  1607. 30

  1608. no

  1609. father

  1610. Abraham

  1611. the

  1612. message

  1613. of the

  1614. scriptures

  1615. aren't

  1616. enough

  1617. but

  1618. if

  1619. someone

  1620. from

  1621. the

  1622. dead

  1623. goes

  1624. to

  1625. them

  1626. they

  1627. will

  1628. repent

  1629. then

  1630. they'll

  1631. change

  1632. their

  1633. lives

  1634. why

  1635. don't

  1636. you

  1637. do

  1638. a

  1639. miracle

  1640. just

  1641. make

  1642. somebody

  1643. rise

  1644. from

  1645. the

  1646. dead

  1647. then

  1648. they'll

  1649. certainly

  1650. change

  1651. their

  1652. ways

  1653. and

  1654. they'll

  1655. certainly

  1656. believe

  1657. verse

  1658. 31

  1659. he said

  1660. to

  1661. them

  1662. if

  1663. they

  1664. do

  1665. not

  1666. listen

  1667. to

  1668. Moses

  1669. and

  1670. the

  1671. prophets

  1672. they

  1673. will

  1674. not

  1675. be

  1676. convinced

  1677. even

  1678. if

  1679. someone

  1680. rises

  1681. from

  1682. the

  1683. dead

  1684. now

  1685. don't

  1686. we

  1687. have

  1688. the

  1689. message

  1690. of

  1691. the

  1692. Bible

  1693. before

  1694. us

  1695. is

  1696. not

  1697. what

  1698. we're

  1699. holding

  1700. in

  1701. our

  1702. hands

  1703. right

  1704. now

  1705. and

  1706. and

  1707. and

  1708. didn't

  1709. someone

  1710. rise

  1711. from

  1712. the

  1713. dead

  1714. you

  1715. see

  1716. God

  1717. has

  1718. not

  1719. left

  1720. us

  1721. without

  1722. excuse

  1723. remember

  1724. where we

  1725. are in

  1726. Luke's

  1727. account of

  1728. the

  1729. gospel

  1730. as we've

  1731. been working

  1732. our way

  1733. through

  1734. remember

  1735. that

  1736. turning

  1737. point

  1738. in

  1739. Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1740. chapter

  1741. 9

  1742. Jesus

  1743. says

  1744. I'm

  1745. on my

  1746. way

  1747. to

  1748. Jerusalem

  1749. Jerusalem

  1750. is going

  1751. to be

  1752. the

  1753. place

  1754. of

  1755. execution

  1756. in

  1757. Jerusalem

  1758. Jesus

  1759. is

  1760. going

  1761. to

  1762. die

  1763. Jesus

  1764. is

  1765. going

  1766. to

  1767. the

  1768. cross

  1769. these

  1770. are the

  1771. sorts

  1772. of

  1773. things

  1774. Jesus

  1775. is

  1776. teaching

  1777. with

  1778. urgency

  1779. as he

  1780. makes

  1781. his way

  1782. to the

  1783. cross

  1784. and

  1785. after

  1786. Jesus

  1787. dies

  1788. on the

  1789. cross

  1790. I want

  1791. us to

  1792. look at

  1793. these

  1794. extraordinary

  1795. words

  1796. that

  1797. Jesus

  1798. speaks

  1799. go to

  1800. Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  1801. chapter

  1802. 24

  1803. just a

  1804. few

  1805. pages

  1806. on

  1807. Luke

    Luke 24:25

  1808. chapter

  1809. 24

  1810. verse

  1811. 25

  1812. so all

  1813. the while

  1814. Jesus is

  1815. saying I'm

  1816. going to

  1817. the cross

  1818. I'm going

  1819. to die

  1820. and then

  1821. when we

  1822. get to

  1823. Luke

  1824. 24

  1825. we've

  1826. already

  1827. read at

  1828. this

  1829. stage

  1830. that

  1831. Jesus

  1832. has

  1833. died

  1834. and now

  1835. he is

  1836. risen

  1837. again

  1838. and now

  1839. he speaks

  1840. to his

  1841. disciples

  1842. verse 25

  1843. he said

  1844. to them

  1845. how foolish

  1846. you are

  1847. and how

  1848. slow to

  1849. believe

  1850. all that

  1851. the prophets

  1852. have spoken

  1853. did not

  1854. the Messiah

  1855. have to

  1856. suffer these

  1857. things and

  1858. then enter

  1859. his glory

  1860. and beginning

  1861. with Moses

  1862. and all the

  1863. prophets

  1864. he explained

  1865. to them

  1866. what was

  1867. said in

  1868. all the

  1869. scriptures

  1870. concerning

  1871. himself

  1872. so Jesus

  1873. takes them

  1874. through the

  1875. big story

  1876. of the

  1877. Bible

  1878. and says

  1879. listen

  1880. guys

  1881. it's all

  1882. about me

  1883. if you

  1884. read your

  1885. Bibles

  1886. carefully

  1887. it's all

  1888. about my

  1889. death

  1890. and it's

  1891. all about

  1892. my

  1893. resurrection

  1894. because when

  1895. I suffered

  1896. for you

  1897. on the

  1898. cross

  1899. I suffered

  1900. for you

  1901. and I

  1902. died

  1903. for you

  1904. the reason

  1905. why I

  1906. went to

  1907. the cross

  1908. was that

  1909. I would

  1910. die in

  1911. place of

  1912. the rich

  1913. man

  1914. so that

  1915. you might

  1916. enjoy the

  1917. eternal

  1918. pleasures

  1919. of the

  1920. poor

  1921. man

  1922. the reason

  1923. I came

  1924. for you

  1925. is that

  1926. I would

  1927. suffer

  1928. hell

  1929. for you

  1930. so that

  1931. you would

  1932. never have

  1933. to suffer

  1934. hell

  1935. so that

  1936. you could

  1937. enjoy the

  1938. eternal

  1939. pleasures

  1940. of heaven

  1941. forever

  1942. and forever

  1943. and forever

  1944. Jesus came

  1945. to take

  1946. the blame

  1947. for all

  1948. of my

  1949. greedy

  1950. hoarding

  1951. and the

  1952. tight fist

  1953. that we

  1954. have around

  1955. all our

  1956. resources

  1957. and in

  1958. his mercy

  1959. and in

  1960. his grace

  1961. has given

  1962. me the

  1963. riches

  1964. of his

  1965. righteousness

  1966. that's

  1967. the message

  1968. of the

  1969. scriptures

  1970. are we

  1971. listening

  1972. to what

  1973. they say

  1974. and in

  1975. case we

  1976. don't quite

  1977. believe that

  1978. that's true

  1979. Jesus did

  1980. rise from

  1981. the dead

  1982. God has

  1983. given us

  1984. the ultimate

  1985. sign

  1986. the greatest

  1987. miracle

  1988. an empty

  1989. grave

  1990. so that

  1991. we can

  1992. believe

  1993. he defeated

  1994. death

  1995. so that

  1996. all who

  1997. live by

  1998. faith

  1999. all who

  2000. are

  2001. spiritually

  2002. poor

  2003. and come

  2004. with their

  2005. hands

  2006. open

  2007. longing

  2008. to be

  2009. filled

  2010. can receive

  2011. forgiveness

  2012. and will

  2013. receive that

  2014. rich

  2015. welcome

  2016. in God's

  2017. eternal

  2018. kingdom

  2019. this is the

  2020. grace and

  2021. mercy

  2022. of an

  2023. amazing

  2024. God

  2025. who does

  2026. not treat

  2027. us as we

  2028. deserve to

  2029. be treated

  2030. the test

  2031. that we

  2032. have listened

  2033. to the

  2034. scriptures

  2035. the evidence

  2036. that we

  2037. have believed

  2038. the resurrection

  2039. is that we

  2040. are people

  2041. who give

  2042. generously to

  2043. those in

  2044. desperate

  2045. need

  2046. you see

  2047. how we use

  2048. our money

  2049. reveals the

  2050. kind of

  2051. person we

  2052. truly are

  2053. a person

  2054. of faith

  2055. or a

  2056. person of

  2057. self

  2058. how we

  2059. use our

  2060. money

  2061. determines

  2062. our

  2063. eternal

  2064. destiny

  2065. who are

  2066. you in

  2067. the story

  2068. who do

  2069. you want

  2070. to be

  2071. in the

  2072. story

  2073. where God

  2074. has made

  2075. it possible

  2076. for us

  2077. to be

  2078. like

  2079. Lazarus

  2080. we come

  2081. with our

  2082. spiritual

  2083. poverty

  2084. we come

  2085. in repentance

  2086. we say

  2087. sorry for

  2088. our greed

  2089. and we

  2090. receive

  2091. the eternal

  2092. pleasures

  2093. that he

  2094. gives to

  2095. us

  2096. what an

  2097. incredible

  2098. gracious

  2099. and merciful

  2100. God we

  2101. have

  2102. he has

  2103. secured our

  2104. future

  2105. so that we

  2106. can give

  2107. generously

  2108. today

  2109. let's pray

  2110. together

  2111. thank

  2112. finally

  2113. who

  2114. need

  2115. to be

  2116. through

  2117. competition

  2118. how to

  2119. for

  2120. for

  2121. your

  2122. fine

  2123. life
