  1. through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.

  2. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short, he could not see over the crowd.

  3. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

  4. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and he said to him, Zacchaeus, come down immediately.

  5. I must stay at your house today. So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

  6. All the people saw this and began to mutter, he has gone to be the guest of a sinner.

  7. But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, look, Lord, here and now I give half of my possessions

  8. to the poor. And if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.

  9. Jesus said to him, today's salvation has come to this house because this man too is a son of Abraham.

  10. For the son of man came to seek and to save the lost.

  11. Thank you, Louise.

  12. Well, let's pray as we look at his word.

  13. Thank you.

  14. Thank you.

  15. Thank you.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you.

  18. Thank you.

  19. Thank you.

  20. Thank you.

  21. Thank you.

  22. Father, we reminded ourselves at the very outset this morning that you are the creator God.

  23. The one who sits enthroned, who is Lord over all things.

  24. And so we come afresh and, as it were, bow before you in our hearts.

  25. Father, we submit to you because we want to listen to your voice.

  26. We do not want to have a hardened heart, but a humble heart.

  27. Father, speak your truth into our lives.

  28. And change us as we seek to follow you.

  29. In your name we pray.

  30. Amen.

  31. The other day I received a really nice phone call.

  32. Johnny, I'd like to welcome you to come and watch Munster.

  33. We're going to meet beforehand for a pre-match dinner, meet some of the players, and then watch the game afterwards.

  34. And I arrived and I met my host.

  35. Johnny, it's great to see you.

  36. You are so welcome.

  37. I'm glad you could make it.

  38. And to top it all off, it was free.

  39. I didn't have to pay a penny for the whole night.

  40. It was all paid for by my host.

  41. It's great to receive those kind of welcomes.

  42. And we love it when somebody says to us, you are so, so welcome.

  43. Well, as we journey through Luke, we have received a great welcome.

  44. Look at chapter 19 and verse 1.

  45. Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.

  46. He's passing through Jericho because Jesus is on the way to somewhere else.

  47. Well, where's he going?

  48. Well, just have a look back a few verses.

  49. Chapter 18, verse 31.

  50. Jesus took the 12 aside and told them,

  51. We are going up to Jerusalem.

  52. That's where Jesus is going.

  53. And everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man,

  54. that Jesus will be fulfilled.

  55. He will be handed over to the Gentiles.

  56. They will mock him, insult him, and spit on him.

  57. They will flog him and kill him.

  58. On the third day, he will rise again.

  59. You see, Jesus is on the way to the cross.

  60. He's on the way to Jerusalem.

  61. At Jerusalem, Jesus is going to die.

  62. He's going to die for his people.

  63. And as he makes his way to Jerusalem,

  64. he's inviting people.

  65. He's welcoming people.

  66. Saying, come to me.

  67. Chapter 19, verse 10.

  68. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  69. Jesus has come to find people like us.

  70. To save us through his death.

  71. He's come to welcome people.

  72. People from all kinds of different backgrounds and nations and languages.

  73. People from all over the world.

  74. He says, come, I want to welcome you.

  75. Well, let's see how this welcome is true.

  76. First, Jesus welcomes the lost.

  77. Let's have a look at the lost.

  78. Verse 2, chapter 19.

  79. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus.

  80. Now, Zacchaeus means righteous one.

  81. But he lived nothing like it.

  82. Despicable one would have been a better title for this guy.

  83. He was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.

  84. Now, when you hear tax collector, just think scumbag.

  85. They worked for the enemy.

  86. The occupying Roman authorities.

  87. The job of a tax collector was to collect tax from anyone

  88. coming into the city to do trade.

  89. So you could imagine, here's Alex coming in with all his freshly cut logs.

  90. Ten bags worth as he makes his way into the city.

  91. Meet Zacchaeus.

  92. He says, ah, I'll take some of them.

  93. Take one bag for the authorities and I'll have two for myself.

  94. And as a chief tax collector, Zacchaeus saw over the whole region.

  95. And what was worse was how he made money.

  96. Oh, he said it was for the authorities.

  97. But always pocketed a bit more.

  98. They charged people an extra amount.

  99. And if anybody disagreed with you, well, you just got in touch with the Romans.

  100. You wouldn't mess with them.

  101. You gave what Zacchaeus asked for.

  102. Now, Zacchaeus might have been hated by the people,

  103. but it made him an extremely wealthy man.

  104. But for all of his wealth that he had gathered,

  105. the position and power that he held,

  106. he was not content.

  107. He was lost.

  108. Money he has,

  109. but he's not satisfied.

  110. Power he has,

  111. but he's not fulfilled.

  112. Well, how do we know that?

  113. Well, look at verse 3.

  114. He wanted to see who Jesus was.

  115. Well, people who have everything,

  116. have everything.

  117. They don't need to see somebody.

  118. But this guy wants to see Jesus.

  119. Not what he looks like,

  120. but what Jesus could do for him.

  121. For Zacchaeus, his life is empty.

  122. He has needs that money can't buy.

  123. He wanted to see Jesus, verse 3,

  124. but because he was short,

  125. he could not see over the crowd.

  126. Zacchaeus was used to looking down on people

  127. because of his position and power.

  128. But once he's in the crowd,

  129. once we see him amongst the people,

  130. we see him as he really is.

  131. He's not just small in stature.

  132. He's small in himself.

  133. He is nothing.

  134. He has nothing.

  135. He's a lost soul

  136. amongst all the people.

  137. Second,

  138. the welcome.

  139. Verse 4.

  140. So we ran ahead,

  141. climbed the sycamore tree,

  142. which could grow to about 60 feet tall.

  143. They were evergreen trees.

  144. Climbed the tree to see Jesus

  145. since Jesus was coming that way.

  146. Now, when we read that,

  147. and we've probably,

  148. some of us heard that

  149. and seen pictures

  150. in our little story books from home,

  151. you kind of have this picture

  152. of this little guy

  153. in a small tree

  154. kind of making himself visible to Jesus.

  155. So as Jesus comes along,

  156. Jesus kind of sees him

  157. before he even reaches there.

  158. But remember,

  159. he's a chief tax collector.

  160. He's hated by the people.

  161. Jesus would want nothing to do

  162. with people like him.

  163. So he thought.

  164. The point is,

  165. he's up in the tree

  166. hiding himself.

  167. He can see Jesus,

  168. but he thinks Jesus can't see him.

  169. Verse 5.

  170. When Jesus reached the spot,

  171. he looked up

  172. and said to him,

  173. Zacchaeus, come down immediately.

  174. I must stay at your house today.

  175. We've got to get the picture here.

  176. Jesus is walking along.

  177. He stops,

  178. looks up,

  179. and says to him,

  180. come down.

  181. What a welcome

  182. for Zacchaeus

  183. to have received.

  184. Come down.

  185. I must stay at your house.

  186. Now normally,

  187. it's the other way around,

  188. isn't it?

  189. You welcome people

  190. to your house.

  191. It's a bit rude to say,

  192. if I were to turn around

  193. and say to you,

  194. I'm coming to your house

  195. for dinner.

  196. But here,

  197. Jesus stops

  198. and welcomes him.

  199. He says,

  200. Zacchaeus,

  201. I'm coming to your house.

  202. You see,

  203. it's not that Zacchaeus

  204. is seeking out Jesus.

  205. In some sense,

  206. he is.

  207. But it's Jesus

  208. who is seeking out Zacchaeus

  209. because,

  210. verse 10,

  211. the Son of Man

  212. came to seek

  213. and save the lost.

  214. Jesus knows he's there.

  215. He's not hiding from Jesus.

  216. Jesus can see him.

  217. Jesus has come

  218. to welcome him.

  219. So the lost are welcome

  220. because,

  221. third,

  222. of God's grace.

  223. Look at verse 7.

  224. All the people saw this

  225. and began to mutter,

  226. he has gone to be

  227. the guest

  228. of a sinner.

  229. Jesus,

  230. you can't

  231. welcome people

  232. like that.

  233. This shouldn't happen.

  234. He's a cheating thief.

  235. He's a scumbag.

  236. Rather than be welcomed,

  237. he needs to be condemned.

  238. Rather than grace,

  239. this guy needs

  240. to be punished.

  241. Now,

  242. this is not the first time

  243. people have objected

  244. to Jesus welcoming people.

  245. Keep your finger there

  246. in chapter 19

  247. and just jump back

  248. a couple of chapters.

  249. Chapter 15

  250. and verse 2.

  251. It introduces

  252. a very well-known section

  253. about the lost

  254. coin

  255. and the lost son,

  256. the lost sheep.

  257. chapter 15

  258. verse 1.

  259. Now,

  260. the tax collectors,

  261. those notorious

  262. stealing thieves,

  263. and the sinners,

  264. all those people

  265. who were thought of

  266. as morally dubious,

  267. well,

  268. they were all gathering

  269. around to hear Jesus.

  270. But the Pharisees

  271. and teachers of the law,

  272. the religious folks,

  273. the good people,

  274. muttered to themselves,

  275. this man welcomes sinners

  276. and eats with them.

  277. And in response,

  278. Jesus would tell

  279. three stories

  280. to explain

  281. that Jesus comes

  282. to seek

  283. and save the lost.

  284. Jesus has come

  285. for sinners,

  286. people like Zacchaeus,

  287. people like you

  288. and me.

  289. Because the point is,

  290. we are just like Zacchaeus.

  291. we are all lost people.

  292. We all find our identity

  293. in things

  294. and other people.

  295. We all search

  296. for joy and happiness

  297. in people,

  298. in places.

  299. We're lost

  300. until Jesus

  301. finds us.

  302. Just last week,

  303. a young man

  304. by the name

  305. of Cain McCormack

  306. was found

  307. murdered in a field

  308. in County Meath.

  309. You might have seen

  310. it on the news.

  311. He's linked

  312. to the notorious

  313. Hutch gang

  314. involved in the drugs trade,

  315. awaiting trial

  316. for being in possession

  317. of a gun

  318. and ammunition.

  319. Now,

  320. how would you feel

  321. about Jesus

  322. coming along

  323. and welcoming

  324. somebody like

  325. Cain McCormack?

  326. Oh,

  327. I mean,

  328. welcoming

  329. for some people,

  330. but

  331. people like that?

  332. that shouldn't happen.

  333. He's a cheating thief.

  334. He's a scumbag.

  335. Rather than welcomed,

  336. he needs to be condemned.

  337. Rather than be shown grace,

  338. he needs to be punished.

  339. Well,

  340. Jesus came for people

  341. just like Cain.

  342. And he came for lost people

  343. like you and me.

  344. You see,

  345. unless we see

  346. ourselves as lost,

  347. as long as you

  348. see yourself

  349. better than

  350. everybody else

  351. and kind of

  352. look down

  353. on those

  354. who don't quite

  355. have it together,

  356. we will never

  357. ever experience

  358. that warm

  359. welcome of Jesus

  360. who says,

  361. I'm coming

  362. to stay with you.

  363. So first,

  364. Jesus comes

  365. to welcome

  366. the lost.

  367. Second,

  368. the lost

  369. welcome

  370. Jesus.

  371. First,

  372. look

  373. at how

  374. Zacchaeus

  375. responds.

  376. Jesus said

  377. to him

  378. in verse 5,

  379. Zacchaeus,

  380. come down

  381. immediately,

  382. I must

  383. stay at your

  384. house

  385. today.

  386. So he

  387. came down

  388. at once

  389. and welcomed

  390. him gladly.

  391. Now,

  392. when Jesus

  393. says,

  394. I must

  395. stay

  396. at your

  397. house,

  398. Zacchaeus,

  399. he's literally

  400. saying,

  401. Zacchaeus,

  402. I need

  403. somewhere

  404. to lodge.

  405. I don't

  406. have somewhere

  407. to stay,

  408. I need

  409. somewhere

  410. to sleep.

  411. He's not

  412. just popping

  413. in for a

  414. five-minute

  415. cup of tea

  416. and then off

  417. again.

  418. Jesus

  419. needs

  420. somewhere

  421. to stay.

  422. He hasn't

  423. got a

  424. home.

  425. It's the

  426. same idea

  427. when we

  428. read at the

  429. very beginning

  430. of Luke's

  431. gospel,

  432. when Mary

  433. and Joseph

  434. were looking

  435. for somewhere

  436. to lodge,

  437. there was

  438. nowhere to

  439. stay,

  440. nobody who

  441. would welcome

  442. them.

  443. You see,

  444. Jesus has

  445. come seeking

  446. those who

  447. will welcome

  448. him,

  449. who will

  450. receive him.

  451. So not

  452. only does

  453. Zacchaeus

  454. turn around

  455. to say

  456. to Jesus,

  457. you're

  458. welcome

  459. to my

  460. house,

  461. Zacchaeus

  462. in a

  463. sense is

  464. saying,

  465. Jesus,

  466. you are

  467. welcome

  468. to my

  469. life.

  470. He is

  471. obeying

  472. the call

  473. to follow

  474. Jesus.

  475. When Jesus

  476. says,

  477. come down,

  478. what does

  479. it say,

  480. verse 6?

  481. He came

  482. down at

  483. once,

  484. immediately.

  485. There's

  486. no delay.

  487. It's an

  488. act of

  489. obedience to

  490. the call

  491. of Jesus.

  492. He's

  493. now going

  494. to follow

  495. the priorities

  496. of Jesus.

  497. No longer

  498. is he

  499. saying,

  500. what do

  501. I want?

  502. What can

  503. I do

  504. with my

  505. life?

  506. But it's

  507. now,

  508. what does

  509. Jesus

  510. desire

  511. for me?

  512. Zacchaeus

  513. will learn

  514. as he

  515. begins to

  516. follow the

  517. road of

  518. discipleship,

  519. I now

  520. die to

  521. self and

  522. live for

  523. Christ.

  524. So

  525. Zacchaeus

  526. gives the

  527. welcome.

  528. He

  529. receives

  530. Jesus.

  531. But not

  532. only that,

  533. look at

  534. the joy,

  535. verse 6.

  536. He came

  537. down at

  538. once and

  539. welcomed him

  540. gladly or

  541. joyfully.

  542. You see,

  543. welcoming Jesus

  544. is not a

  545. drudgery,

  546. it's a

  547. joy.

  548. No longer

  549. does he have

  550. to hide

  551. from Jesus,

  552. he can now

  553. welcome him

  554. gladly.

  555. The fear,

  556. the guilt,

  557. the shame

  558. of hiding

  559. away,

  560. it's now

  561. all gone,

  562. do you see?

  563. And in

  564. its place

  565. is acceptance

  566. and belonging

  567. and salvation.

  568. salvation.

  569. When we

  570. come to

  571. Jesus,

  572. when we

  573. receive him

  574. as

  575. saviour,

  576. we are

  577. truly fulfilled

  578. and satisfied

  579. for we

  580. experience

  581. forgiveness

  582. of all

  583. our sins

  584. and peace

  585. floods our

  586. life.

  587. Zacchaeus

  588. may lose

  589. his position

  590. and power,

  591. but you

  592. know what?

  593. He's gained

  594. new life

  595. and eternal

  596. treasures.

  597. it's not

  598. judgment

  599. in meeting

  600. Jesus,

  601. it's joy.

  602. It's not

  603. condemnation

  604. when we

  605. welcome Jesus,

  606. it's

  607. celebration.

  608. So Zacchaeus

  609. welcomes

  610. and it is

  611. a joyful

  612. occasion.

  613. transformation.

  614. But third,

  615. look at the

  616. transformation.

  617. Look at what

  618. happens when

  619. we welcome

  620. Jesus.

  621. Look at

  622. verse 8.

  623. Zacchaeus

  624. stood up

  625. and said

  626. to the

  627. Lord,

  628. look Lord,

  629. here and

  630. now I

  631. give half

  632. of my

  633. possessions

  634. to the

  635. poor,

  636. and if

  637. I've

  638. cheated

  639. anybody

  640. out of

  641. anything,

  642. I will

  643. pay back

  644. four times

  645. the amount.

  646. the law

  647. actually said

  648. if you look

  649. in Numbers

    Numbers 5 chapter mention

  650. chapter 5,

  651. I think it is

  652. verse 7,

  653. it said that

  654. you are required

  655. to pay back

  656. a fifth.

  657. But here it's

  658. like four times

  659. the amount.

  660. This is well

  661. over and above

  662. all that he

  663. should be paying.

  664. What a

  665. transformation

  666. to this

  667. man's

  668. life.

  669. He has

  670. been

  671. completely

  672. and

  673. utterly

  674. changed.

  675. Again,

  676. look at

  677. verse 8,

  678. he says,

  679. right now,

  680. here and

  681. now,

  682. I give

  683. half of

  684. my

  685. possessions

  686. to the

  687. poor.

  688. All that

  689. I've

  690. accumulated,

  691. I'm going

  692. to go and

  693. give all

  694. of that

  695. to those

  696. who don't

  697. have.

  698. And more

  699. than that,

  700. I'm going

  701. to pay

  702. back four

  703. times the

  704. amount to

  705. anybody I

  706. meet now

  707. and in

  708. the future

  709. that I

  710. come across

  711. a meat

  712. on the

  713. road that

  714. I've

  715. cheated or

  716. diddled

  717. with,

  718. I am

  719. going to

  720. give them

  721. everything

  722. back four

  723. times the

  724. amount.

  725. So Alex,

  726. you're going

  727. to get

  728. extra logs,

  729. don't worry.

  730. It'll all

  731. be paid

  732. back.

  733. So no

  734. longer is

  735. Zacchaeus a

  736. lying,

  737. greedy,

  738. cheating

  739. scumbag.

  740. He is a

  741. joyful,

  742. generous,

  743. giving

  744. child of

  745. God.

  746. You see,

  747. it's impossible

  748. for us to

  749. welcome

  750. Jesus and

  751. receive Jesus

  752. and not

  753. be changed.

  754. He transforms

  755. us into

  756. people who

  757. are generous

  758. givers rather

  759. than greedy

  760. hoarders.

  761. He releases

  762. our pockets.

  763. He opens

  764. our wallets.

  765. He enables

  766. us to give

  767. in ways that

  768. we never

  769. thought possible.

  770. He changes

  771. us from

  772. the inside

  773. out.

  774. Now what

  775. Jesus did

  776. for Zacchaeus,

  777. he does

  778. for us.

  779. We can't

  780. literally

  781. welcome

  782. Jesus into

  783. our home,

  784. but we do

  785. welcome him

  786. into our

  787. lives.

  788. As he seeks

  789. for us and

  790. looks for us

  791. and welcomes

  792. us, the way

  793. we respond

  794. is to say,

  795. yes, I

  796. receive, I

  797. welcome you.

  798. In John's

  799. account of

  800. the gospel,

  801. Jesus makes

  802. a promise

  803. to all who

  804. receive him.

  805. It comes

  806. from John

    John 14:23

  807. 14, verse

  808. 23, it's

  809. on the

  810. screen.

  811. Jesus said,

  812. anyone who

  813. loves me

  814. will obey

  815. my teaching.

  816. my father

  817. will love

  818. them and

  819. we will

  820. come to

  821. them and

  822. make our

  823. home with

  824. them.

  825. The father

  826. and the

  827. son, by

  828. the holy

  829. spirit, will

  830. take up

  831. residence in

  832. our lives.

  833. When we

  834. turn our

  835. life over to

  836. the lord

  837. Jesus, it's

  838. saying he

  839. will come

  840. to us.

  841. God

  842. literally

  843. lives within

  844. us.

  845. He moves

  846. into our

  847. lives.

  848. He comes

  849. into the

  850. home of

  851. our lives,

  852. not just

  853. to leave

  854. us the

  855. way that

  856. we are,

  857. but by

  858. his holy

  859. spirit, he

  860. begins to

  861. change us

  862. and transform

  863. us to

  864. obey Jesus

  865. and to

  866. live for

  867. his glory.

  868. God

  869. now, do

  870. you see

  871. how all

  872. this

  873. happens?

  874. Jesus

  875. didn't just

  876. come along

  877. to Zacchaeus

  878. and spy him

  879. up the

  880. tree and

  881. say, you

  882. know, Zacchaeus

  883. come down,

  884. I want to

  885. come to

  886. your house,

  887. I want to

  888. stay with

  889. you, but

  890. first of

  891. all, I

  892. want you to

  893. go and

  894. tidy your

  895. life up a

  896. bit because

  897. it's a

  898. desperate

  899. mess.

  900. I

  901. possibly

  902. couldn't

  903. be seen

  904. with somebody

  905. like you.

  906. Start

  907. giving to

  908. the poor,

  909. start dealing

  910. with people

  911. in the

  912. right way,

  913. let me

  914. see that

  915. you're living

  916. the right

  917. way and

  918. then I'll

  919. come and

  920. stay with

  921. you.

  922. No, Jesus

  923. says, I'm

  924. coming to

  925. your house

  926. today, right

  927. now, the

  928. way you are,

  929. the mess

  930. that you

  931. are, the

  932. way people

  933. think of

  934. you, I

  935. am coming

  936. to you

  937. right now.

  938. And then

  939. the change

  940. in his

  941. life begins.

  942. You see,

  943. God never

  944. ever says

  945. to us,

  946. look, you

  947. need to

  948. change your

  949. life first.

  950. You need

  951. to sort

  952. out that

  953. mess and

  954. that sin

  955. in your

  956. life, get

  957. it all

  958. organized, get

  959. it all

  960. right, and

  961. then I

  962. will come

  963. to you.

  964. No, he

  965. first comes

  966. and takes

  967. up residence

  968. in our

  969. lives, and

  970. then he

  971. begins to

  972. change us

  973. bit by

  974. bit, changing

  975. us, transforming

  976. us to be

  977. more like

  978. him.

  979. You see, if

  980. we have

  981. welcomed

  982. Jesus, the

  983. sorts of

  984. things we

  985. will see in

  986. our life is

  987. ongoing

  988. radical change.

  989. And that's

  990. a good

  991. question for

  992. us to ask

  993. right now.

  994. Do you

  995. see radical

  996. change in

  997. your life?

  998. Because Jesus

  999. is at work

  1000. within you.

  1001. To those

  1002. closest to

  1003. you, does

  1004. your spouse,

  1005. do your

  1006. children say,

  1007. you're changing,

  1008. you're different?

  1009. that's what

  1010. happens when

  1011. God moves

  1012. in.

  1013. He goes

  1014. into every

  1015. room of

  1016. our lives.

  1017. No door

  1018. is left

  1019. closed.

  1020. And he

  1021. changes us.

  1022. That is

  1023. something to

  1024. be joyful

  1025. about.

  1026. So,

  1027. Jesus

  1028. welcomes

  1029. the lost.

  1030. The lost

  1031. welcomed

  1032. Jesus.

  1033. And this

  1034. is surprising

  1035. salvation.

  1036. This

  1037. account of

  1038. Zacchaeus,

  1039. perhaps well

  1040. known to

  1041. many of us,

  1042. is really

  1043. surprising.

  1044. We can

  1045. understand

  1046. Zacchaeus

  1047. wanting to

  1048. see Jesus.

  1049. But just

  1050. think about

  1051. it.

  1052. Jesus

  1053. wanting to

  1054. stay with

  1055. Zacchaeus?

  1056. He's a

  1057. notorious

  1058. thief and

  1059. a traitor.

  1060. You could

  1061. never trust

  1062. him.

  1063. Everybody

  1064. hates

  1065. him.

  1066. He

  1067. deserves

  1068. condemnation,

  1069. not salvation.

  1070. But,

  1071. look at

  1072. verse 9,

  1073. Jesus said

  1074. to him,

  1075. today salvation

  1076. has come to

  1077. this house

  1078. because this

  1079. man too

  1080. is a son

  1081. of Abraham.

  1082. Jesus is

  1083. saying,

  1084. I accept

  1085. him.

  1086. I welcome

  1087. him.

  1088. God

  1089. to

  1090. God.

  1091. How could

  1092. Jesus

  1093. possibly

  1094. say that?

  1095. Well,

  1096. look at

  1097. verse 10.

  1098. Because,

  1099. or for,

  1100. the son

  1101. of man,

  1102. that's

  1103. Jesus,

  1104. came to

  1105. seek and

  1106. to save

  1107. the lost.

  1108. That

  1109. verse 10

  1110. is so

  1111. crucial to

  1112. the whole

  1113. of Luke's

  1114. account.

  1115. It

  1116. summarises

  1117. what the

  1118. whole gospel

  1119. is about.

  1120. this is

  1121. the mission

  1122. of Jesus.

  1123. This is

  1124. why he

  1125. came.

  1126. This is

  1127. why he

  1128. died.

  1129. He came

  1130. to welcome

  1131. those,

  1132. the kind

  1133. of people

  1134. we think

  1135. should be

  1136. excluded

  1137. and written

  1138. off.

  1139. Let's

  1140. look at

  1141. verse 10

  1142. just a little

  1143. bit more

  1144. closely.

  1145. Do you

  1146. see what

  1147. it says

  1148. there,

  1149. the son

  1150. of man?

  1151. We've

  1152. come across

  1153. that a

  1154. number of

  1155. times.

  1156. It's the

  1157. way Jesus

  1158. refers to

  1159. himself.

  1160. He

  1161. calls

  1162. himself

  1163. the son

  1164. of man.

  1165. It's a

  1166. title given

  1167. to somebody

  1168. who comes

  1169. before God.

  1170. And we're

  1171. told where

  1172. that first

  1173. happens.

  1174. If you go

  1175. back in

  1176. your Bible,

  1177. keep your

  1178. finger in

  1179. chapter 19

  1180. of Luke

  1181. and go

  1182. back to

  1183. Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1184. chapter 7.

  1185. Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1186. chapter 7.

  1187. I haven't

  1188. got a page

  1189. number.

  1190. If somebody

  1191. gets it,

  1192. that would

  1193. be great.

  1194. Daniel

    Daniel 7:13

  1195. chapter 7

  1196. verse 13.

  1197. 8,

  1198. 9,

  1199. 3.

  1200. Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1201. chapter 7

  1202. and verse

  1203. 13.

  1204. So Daniel

  1205. was one

  1206. of God's

  1207. prophets

  1208. and he

  1209. has this

  1210. vision.

  1211. It's like a

  1212. dream and

  1213. in his

  1214. dream he

  1215. sees

  1216. someone.

  1217. So Daniel

    Daniel 7:13

  1218. chapter 7

  1219. verse 13.

  1220. In my

  1221. vision at

  1222. night I

  1223. looked and

  1224. there before

  1225. me was

  1226. one like

  1227. a son

  1228. of man

  1229. coming with

  1230. the clouds

  1231. of heaven.

  1232. He approached

  1233. the ancient

  1234. of days,

  1235. that's God,

  1236. and was led

  1237. into his

  1238. presence.

  1239. and so

  1240. this son

  1241. of man,

  1242. this character

  1243. is now

  1244. coming before

  1245. God.

  1246. And what

  1247. happens?

  1248. Verse 14,

  1249. he was

  1250. given

  1251. authority,

  1252. glory,

  1253. and sovereign

  1254. power.

  1255. All the

  1256. nations and

  1257. peoples of

  1258. every language

  1259. worshipped him.

  1260. His dominion is

  1261. an everlasting

  1262. dominion that

  1263. will not pass

  1264. away,

  1265. and his

  1266. kingdom is

  1267. one that

  1268. will never

  1269. be destroyed.

  1270. Now go

  1271. back to

  1272. Luke chapter

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1273. 19.

  1274. So you

  1275. see this

  1276. person,

  1277. this son

  1278. of man,

  1279. is one

  1280. with absolute

  1281. power and

  1282. authority.

  1283. All the

  1284. nations

  1285. worship him.

  1286. Now Jesus

  1287. enters the

  1288. scene in

  1289. Luke's

  1290. gospel,

  1291. and he

  1292. says,

  1293. verse 10,

  1294. I am

  1295. the son

  1296. of man.

  1297. I am

  1298. this one

  1299. with all

  1300. power and

  1301. all authority.

  1302. authority.

  1303. And the

  1304. expectation is

  1305. that as

  1306. Jesus comes,

  1307. he is going

  1308. to use this

  1309. power and

  1310. use this

  1311. authority to

  1312. clean up all

  1313. the mess and

  1314. get rid of all

  1315. the vile people

  1316. that are wandering

  1317. around the

  1318. world.

  1319. Judge the

  1320. sinners and

  1321. condemn the

  1322. sinners.

  1323. All those

  1324. criminals,

  1325. let's round

  1326. them all up,

  1327. put them in

  1328. prison,

  1329. get rid of

  1330. them,

  1331. why not

  1332. execute them

  1333. as well?

  1334. And all

  1335. those people

  1336. who don't

  1337. contribute to

  1338. the state and

  1339. just kind of

  1340. take everything

  1341. for themselves

  1342. and don't

  1343. work and

  1344. are really

  1345. lazy,

  1346. let's get rid

  1347. of them as

  1348. well.

  1349. Let's just

  1350. keep all the

  1351. good people.

  1352. And all

  1353. those people

  1354. who are

  1355. sexually immoral,

  1356. let's get rid

  1357. of them and

  1358. only the nice

  1359. people will

  1360. keep all the

  1361. nice people.

  1362. But what do

  1363. we see Jesus

  1364. doing as he

  1365. comes into

  1366. the world?

  1367. We find him

  1368. in Luke's

  1369. gospel anyway,

  1370. sitting down

  1371. a lot,

  1372. eating and

  1373. drinking with

  1374. tax collectors

  1375. and sinners.

  1376. These are the

  1377. people who he

  1378. hangs out with.

  1379. We see him

  1380. meeting people

  1381. like a notorious

  1382. sinner,

  1383. like Zacchaeus,

  1384. saying,

  1385. I'm going to

  1386. come and stay

  1387. in your house.

  1388. It's not what

  1389. we expect.

  1390. He has come

  1391. to welcome the

  1392. people we would

  1393. push and turn

  1394. away.

  1395. But more

  1396. than that,

  1397. the Son of

  1398. Man,

  1399. not only does

  1400. he welcome

  1401. people,

  1402. he has come

  1403. to give his

  1404. life for

  1405. people.

  1406. Remember,

  1407. chapter 19,

  1408. verse 1,

  1409. Jesus entered

  1410. Jericho and

  1411. was passing

  1412. through.

  1413. The Son of

  1414. Man is on

  1415. the way to

  1416. Jerusalem to

  1417. die on the

  1418. cross,

  1419. to die for

  1420. people like

  1421. you and me,

  1422. for my sin,

  1423. for your sin.

  1424. As one writer

  1425. poetically put

  1426. it, the only

  1427. reason Zacchaeus

  1428. could come down

  1429. from his tree

  1430. and be friends

  1431. with Jesus

  1432. was because

  1433. Jesus climbed

  1434. his own tree.

  1435. I'm quoting

  1436. 1 Peter 2,

  1437. he himself,

  1438. that's Jesus,

  1439. bore our sins

  1440. in his body

  1441. on the tree.

  1442. The only reason

  1443. Zacchaeus could be

  1444. welcomed by

  1445. Jesus was

  1446. because Jesus

  1447. took the penalty

  1448. of Zacchaeus'

  1449. sin.

  1450. That's what

  1451. he's done

  1452. for the world.

  1453. That's what

  1454. he's done

  1455. for you

  1456. and for me.

  1457. He's come

  1458. to seek

  1459. and save

  1460. the lost

  1461. by going

  1462. to the

  1463. cross

  1464. to die.

  1465. I mean,

  1466. the application

  1467. is straightforward

  1468. for us,

  1469. isn't it?

  1470. If Jesus

  1471. has welcomed

  1472. you,

  1473. and if

  1474. you have

  1475. welcomed

  1476. Jesus,

  1477. then we

  1478. are going

  1479. to be the

  1480. kind of

  1481. people

  1482. who welcome

  1483. others.

  1484. Rather than

  1485. judge,

  1486. we show

  1487. mercy.

  1488. Instead of

  1489. condemning,

  1490. we offer

  1491. grace.

  1492. Like Jesus,

  1493. we too

  1494. go to

  1495. seek and

  1496. save the

  1497. lost,

  1498. for there's

  1499. nobody outside

  1500. of God's

  1501. limits.

  1502. There's no

  1503. sin that is

  1504. so great

  1505. that cannot

  1506. be forgiven.

  1507. There is

  1508. no person

  1509. that God

  1510. writes off

  1511. and says,

  1512. too late.

  1513. We are

  1514. to go

  1515. into our

  1516. community,

  1517. amongst our

  1518. friends.

  1519. We are to

  1520. sit down

  1521. with sinners

  1522. just like

  1523. Jesus did,

  1524. to sit down

  1525. with people

  1526. just like

  1527. me,

  1528. and just

  1529. like you,

  1530. people who

  1531. get things

  1532. wrong and

  1533. mess up and

  1534. fail.

  1535. We are to

  1536. sit and

  1537. eat and

  1538. drink with

  1539. them and

  1540. offer them

  1541. the welcome

  1542. of Jesus.

  1543. Christmas time

  1544. is a time of

  1545. welcome,

  1546. isn't it?

  1547. Welcoming

  1548. people to

  1549. our homes,

  1550. welcoming

  1551. people as

  1552. we're out

  1553. and about.

  1554. Who are

  1555. the people

  1556. that we're

  1557. going to be

  1558. welcoming this

  1559. season?

  1560. The people

  1561. that are

  1562. nice,

  1563. those just

  1564. within our

  1565. nice little

  1566. community who

  1567. we get on

  1568. with.

  1569. Or we

  1570. welcome those

  1571. who've never

  1572. ever heard,

  1573. never really

  1574. understood.

  1575. Jesus has

  1576. welcomed the

  1577. lost,

  1578. and lost

  1579. people like

  1580. us can go

  1581. and welcome

  1582. others too.

  1583. Let's pray

  1584. together.

  1585. Let's pray

  1586. together.

  1587. Amen.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. Amen.

  1590. Amen.

  1591. Amen.

  1592. Amen.

  1593. Amen.

  1594. Amen.

  1595. Amen.
