  2. 1 Peter chapter 3 verse 8 to 17.

    1 Peter 3:8–17

  3. So the title over it is Suffering for Doing Good.

  4. Finally, all of you be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.

  5. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult.

  6. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called, so that you may inherit a blessing.

  7. For whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.

  8. They must turn from evil and do good.

  9. They must seek peace and pursue it.

  10. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their prayer.

  11. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

  12. Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?

  13. But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.

  14. Do not fear their threats.

  15. Do not be frightened.

  16. But in your hearts, reverber Christ as Lord.

  17. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

  18. But do this with gentleness and respect,

  19. keeping a clear conscience,

  20. so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

  21. For it is better, if it is God's will,

  22. to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

  23. Amen.

  24. Thanks, Mary.

  25. Let's pray together.

  26. Father, thank you for your word.

  27. Thank you for its truth.

  28. Thank you that we have it written down, recorded for us today in our own language,

  29. so that we can read about you,

  30. and by your Holy Spirit come to know you and love you.

  31. And we pray that as we look at your word afresh today,

  32. that it would give us a greater confidence in what we believe.

  33. A greater confidence to share Christ with others.

  34. A greater confidence as we face a world that does not want to know or want to listen.

  35. Father, equip us and bless us, we ask.

  36. In Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. Well, according to the latest report on global persecution by the organization Open Doors,

  39. one in every 12 Christians in the world lives in an area or in a culture in which Christianity is illegal, forbidden, or punished.

  40. That's about 215 million people.

  41. Each month, the report tells us that 322 Christians are killed for their faith.

  42. 214 churches and church properties are destroyed.

  43. 722 forms of violence are committed against Christians,

  44. such as beatings, abductions, rapes, arrests, and forced marriage.

  45. It actually reflects what it was like when Peter wrote this first letter.

  46. If you were a Christian in the first century, well, then it was not a safe place to be.

  47. And for many Christians living today, it's not an easy place to live.

  48. And while we might not live in a country where following Jesus is illegal or forbidden or punished,

  49. we are living in a society which is increasingly hostile towards those who would say they're Christians.

  50. As we stand up for Christian values, as we speak out for Christian truth,

  51. we will get reaction, we will get hit.

  52. Peter reminds us of this right at the beginning of his letter.

  53. Look at chapter 1, verse 6.

  54. Chapter 1, verse 6.

  55. In all this you greatly rejoice.

  56. So he's been talking about some of the blessings we have.

  57. Though now, for a little while,

  58. while you may have had to suffer grief,

  59. in all kinds of trials.

  60. So as Christians, we will face all kinds of trials.

  61. And some of these trials, if you jump to chapter 4, verse 12,

  62. is the trial of suffering for being a Christian.

  63. Chapter 4, verse 12.

  64. Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you

  65. to test you as though something strange were happening to you.

  66. You see, as pressure continues in our society today

  67. to repeal, for example, the Eighth Amendment,

  68. so there is an increased intolerance towards any other view.

  69. If you speak out for the rights of the unborn,

  70. you will be slandered and isolated.

  71. And as society rejects the claim that Jesus is the truth,

  72. so there is greater hostility towards Christianity.

  73. If you stand for what you believe,

  74. you will be marginalised and pushed out.

  75. And that's really the theme of chapter 3

  76. and the reading we had.

  77. Turn to chapter 3, verse 9.

  78. Verse 9 is saying to us that if we are Christians,

  79. you will suffer insult.

  80. Or look at verse 14.

  81. If we are Christians, you will face threats.

  82. If you are a Christian, verse 16,

  83. there will be those who speak maliciously against you.

  84. You see, to stand up for Christian values,

  85. to speak out the Christian truth,

  86. it will be tough, it will be difficult.

  87. So how do we live in a world that is hostile to Christ and his church?

  88. And again, as Peter wrote this letter at the beginning of the first century,

  89. for the first 250 years,

  90. it was dangerous to be a Christian.

  91. You were either removed from where you lived

  92. and displaced somewhere else.

  93. You could be locked up.

  94. You could be fed to the lions.

  95. You could be crucified.

  96. So Peter is well placed

  97. to tell us how he can help us

  98. to be a faithful witness

  99. in what can be a difficult situation.

  100. So three things we're going to look at.

  101. First,

  102. do not fear those who threaten you.

  103. Do not fear those who threaten you.

  104. Look at verse 13.

  105. Who is going to harm you

  106. if you are eager to do good?

  107. But even if you should suffer for what is right,

  108. you are blessed.

  109. Do not fear their threats.

  110. Do not be frightened.

  111. Now I get frightened all the time as a Christian.

  112. I fear that if I speak out for Jesus,

  113. if I stand for what the Bible teaches,

  114. I fear that people will think I'm a little bit odd,

  115. strange,

  116. that I'll be talked about.

  117. But the thing that I fear most of all

  118. is that I will lose my friends

  119. because I love my friends

  120. and I want to keep them.

  121. And you might fear that

  122. if you associate with Christians,

  123. you might be insulted or laughed at.

  124. So for a more easier and more comfortable life,

  125. well,

  126. when we're in the company of our friends,

  127. we just keep quiet.

  128. Why rock the boat?

  129. Why say something

  130. that they might take as offensive?

  131. But,

  132. it tells us in verse 14,

  133. do not fear their threats.

  134. Don't be frightened.

  135. Don't be frightened about what people might say.

  136. Literally,

  137. literally,

  138. don't be intimidated.

  139. Well, you say,

  140. that's much easier said than done.

  141. It's easier,

  142. easy to read these sorts of things.

  143. But,

  144. we do fear what people think of us.

  145. But,

  146. there is no need to fear.

  147. And the beginning of 14

  148. gives us the reason why we don't need to fear.

  149. But,

  150. even if you should suffer for what is right,

  151. you are blessed.

  152. Peter wants us to know

  153. that if we are Christians,

  154. in the midst of facing threats,

  155. we are really blessed.

  156. And what's the blessing

  157. that he's talking about?

  158. Well,

  159. go back to chapter 1,

  160. verse 3.

  161. We,

  162. we read it at the beginning.

  163. Let's read these verses again.

  164. Chapter 1,

  165. verse 3.

  166. These are the blessings

  167. that we have

  168. if we are followers of the Lord Jesus.

  169. Praise be to the God and Father

  170. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  171. In his great mercy,

  172. he has given us new birth

  173. into a living hope

  174. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  175. from the dead

  176. and into an inheritance

  177. that can never perish,

  178. spoil,

  179. or fade.

  180. This inheritance

  181. is kept in heaven for you

  182. who,

  183. through faith,

  184. are shielded by God's power

  185. until the coming of the salvation

  186. that is ready to be revealed

  187. in the last time.

  188. These are the blessings

  189. that we have received.

  190. we have new birth,

  191. a new beginning,

  192. a fresh start.

  193. And that new birth

  194. leads into a living hope.

  195. Not a dead hope,

  196. but a present

  197. and an alive hope.

  198. And that leads us

  199. into an eternal inheritance.

  200. And did you notice

  201. what God has promised

  202. to his people

  203. about this inheritance?

  204. Look at the end of verse 4.

  205. This inheritance

  206. is kept in heaven for you.

  207. But not only that,

  208. verse 5,

  209. who through faith

  210. are shielded by God's power.

  211. So,

  212. this inheritance

  213. is kept for us by God

  214. and we are kept

  215. for this inheritance

  216. by God.

  217. He keeps the inheritance

  218. for us

  219. and He keeps us

  220. for that inheritance.

  221. Nothing

  222. can take us

  223. away from that inheritance

  224. and no one

  225. can take us away

  226. from that inheritance.

  227. God

  228. keeps us

  229. and He shields us

  230. by our power.

  231. So,

  232. by His power.

  233. So,

  234. people can say

  235. what they like,

  236. they can think

  237. what they like,

  238. they can do

  239. what they like

  240. because

  241. we are truly blessed.

  242. This is what

  243. keeps us

  244. being faithful

  245. in our witness

  246. when we face

  247. opposition

  248. or face threats.

  249. Open Doors,

  250. what I mentioned

  251. just now

  252. in their report

  253. at the beginning

  254. of this year,

  255. said that in North Korea

  256. there are

  257. an estimated

  258. 300,000 followers

  259. of Jesus.

  260. If discovered

  261. as a Christian

  262. not only

  263. are you

  264. imported

  265. to labour camps

  266. as a political

  267. criminal

  268. or even

  269. killed on the spot,

  270. your families

  271. will share

  272. in their same fate

  273. as well.

  274. Or in Yemen,

  275. which just has

  276. a few thousand

  277. believers,

  278. all Christians

  279. in that country

  280. experience

  281. persecution

  282. for their faith.

  283. Believers

  284. face detention

  285. and interrogation

  286. by authorities

  287. and death threats

  288. from their families

  289. and radical

  290. Islamic groups.

  291. Or in Somalia,

  292. in East Africa,

  293. where there are

  294. just a few hundred

  295. Christians,

  296. upon discovery,

  297. if they find out

  298. you are a believer,

  299. you are very often

  300. killed right on the spot

  301. there and then.

  302. Believers are also

  303. persecuted by their

  304. families and their

  305. communities.

  306. Now think about

  307. a believer living

  308. in one of these

  309. countries.

  310. What keeps these

  311. Christians talking

  312. about Jesus

  313. when it's not

  314. safe?

  315. Well,

  316. they've got an

  317. inheritance

  318. that nothing

  319. and no one

  320. can take from

  321. them.

  322. Yes,

  323. they can be

  324. imprisoned.

  325. Yes,

  326. their families

  327. may turn their

  328. backs on them.

  329. At worst,

  330. they will be

  331. killed.

  332. But even if

  333. they should

  334. lose their

  335. life,

  336. it will mean

  337. they receive

  338. their promised

  339. inheritance.

  340. So can you

  341. see how we

  342. do not need

  343. to fear the

  344. threats of

  345. others?

  346. Yes,

  347. you may become

  348. unpopular.

  349. You mightn't be

  350. liked by your

  351. friends.

  352. You might even

  353. miss out on a

  354. job opportunity.

  355. You might even

  356. be shunned by

  357. your family.

  358. But whatever

  359. we may lose

  360. in this life,

  361. remember the

  362. blessings that

  363. we have.

  364. We have new

  365. birth, a

  366. living hope,

  367. into an

  368. inheritance that

  369. can never ever

  370. perish, spoil

  371. or fade.

  372. And this

  373. inheritance is

  374. kept for us

  375. and we are

  376. kept for this

  377. inheritance.

  378. So when we

  379. go to work

  380. tomorrow,

  381. when we head

  382. off to college,

  383. when we hang

  384. out with our

  385. friends, read

  386. the words of

  387. verse 14,

  388. do not fear

  389. their threats.

  390. Do not be

  391. frightened.

  392. We have this

  393. incredible blessing

  394. from God.

  395. So first,

  396. do not fear

  397. their threats.

  398. Second,

  399. speak hope

  400. to those

  401. who ask

  402. you.

  403. Speak hope

  404. to those

  405. who ask

  406. you.

  407. Verse 15,

  408. but in

  409. your hearts

  410. revere

  411. Christ

  412. as Lord.

  413. So,

  414. verse 14,

  415. don't fear

  416. others.

  417. Don't be

  418. worried about

  419. what they'll

  420. say or what

  421. they'll do.

  422. Instead,

  423. revere

  424. Christ

  425. as Lord.

  426. Because of

  427. the blessings

  428. we have

  429. received from

  430. Christ,

  431. we revere

  432. him.

  433. That is,

  434. we honour

  435. him.

  436. We submit

  437. to him.

  438. What a

  439. great and

  440. glorious God

  441. we have.

  442. He is our

  443. Lord.

  444. He rules

  445. over our

  446. life.

  447. He rose

  448. again from

  449. the grave.

  450. He controls

  451. our eternal

  452. destiny.

  453. How could we

  454. not revere

  455. him and

  456. turn to

  457. him?

  458. So as we

  459. revere

  460. him, we

  461. want to

  462. live lives

  463. that please

  464. him.

  465. In our

  466. work, we

  467. want to

  468. live for

  469. him with

  470. our

  471. friends.

  472. We want

  473. to speak

  474. up for

  475. him.

  476. So the

  477. rest of

  478. verse 15,

  479. as we

  480. revere

  481. Christ,

  482. always be

  483. prepared to

  484. give an

  485. answer to

  486. everyone who

  487. asks you to

  488. give the

  489. reason for

  490. the hope

  491. that you

  492. have.

  493. Now there's

  494. three things

  495. here in

  496. verse 15

  497. that we

  498. want to

  499. look at.

  500. first,

  501. always be

  502. prepared to

  503. give an

  504. answer.

  505. To give

  506. an answer

  507. is simply

  508. to give

  509. a reason

  510. for why

  511. we believe

  512. what we

  513. believe.

  514. It's where

  515. we get the

  516. word apologetics

  517. from.

  518. It's about

  519. making a

  520. defense of

  521. our faith,

  522. an apology,

  523. explaining the

  524. reasonableness of

  525. what we

  526. believe,

  527. that it's

  528. true and

  529. it's

  530. dependable.

  531. So let

  532. me ask,

  533. if you are

  534. a Christian,

  535. why do

  536. you believe

  537. what you

  538. believe?

  539. I wonder,

  540. could you

  541. explain it?

  542. If somebody

  543. challenged you,

  544. could you

  545. defend it?

  546. What if

  547. someone comes

  548. up to you

  549. and says,

  550. you know,

  551. this Bible,

  552. well,

  553. it's all

  554. made up.

  555. It's just

  556. a collection

  557. of stories

  558. all about

  559. this person

  560. called Jesus

  561. who never

  562. really existed?

  563. How would

  564. you answer

  565. somebody like

  566. that?

  567. Well,

  568. we could

  569. point to

  570. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  571. chapter 1.

  572. Have a look

  573. at 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  574. chapter 1.

  575. You see,

  576. we mustn't

  577. forget that

  578. when these

  579. letters were

  580. written,

  581. there were

  582. lots of

  583. skeptics and

  584. doubters around

  585. just like there

  586. are today and

  587. say, well,

  588. how could you

  589. believe any

  590. of these

  591. things?

  592. And so

  593. Peter would

  594. give evidence

  595. to show

  596. that we

  597. can believe.

  598. So in

  599. some ways

  600. he's responding

  601. to some of

  602. the challenges

  603. that may be

  604. put to him.

  605. So chapter 1

  606. verse 16,

  607. he says,

  608. for we did

  609. not follow

  610. cleverly devised

  611. stories when

  612. we told you

  613. about the

  614. coming of

  615. our Lord

  616. Jesus Christ

  617. in power,

  618. but we

  619. were eyewitnesses

  620. of his

  621. majesty.

  622. Remember

  623. Ralph read

  624. from John's

  625. gospel,

  626. they were

  627. also eyewitnesses.

  628. Verse 17,

  629. he received

  630. honour and

  631. glory from

  632. God the

  633. Father when

  634. the voice

  635. came to

  636. him from

  637. the majestic

  638. glory saying,

  639. this is my

  640. son whom I

  641. love,

  642. with him I

  643. am well

  644. pleased.

  645. So he's

  646. talking there

  647. about the

  648. transfiguration

  649. and Peter is

  650. saying,

  651. verse 18,

  652. we ourselves

  653. heard this

  654. voice that

  655. came from

  656. heaven when

  657. we were

  658. with him

  659. on the

  660. sacred

  661. mountain.

  662. You see,

  663. Peter was

  664. there,

  665. he saw,

  666. he heard,

  667. he touched

  668. and he's

  669. writing up

  670. these accounts

  671. for us and

  672. people are

  673. saying,

  674. well how do

  675. we know

  676. it's true?

  677. Well he's

  678. saying,

  679. go and

  680. check out

  681. the eyewitnesses,

  682. go and

  683. ask them

  684. what they

  685. thought and

  686. what they

  687. saw.

  688. It was

  689. all recorded.

  690. Let me

  691. read to

  692. you.

  693. something from

  694. a little

  695. book called

  696. Truth Matters,

  697. which is a

  698. very helpful

  699. book.

  700. Richard

  701. Bochum

  702. wrote a

  703. book called

  704. Jesus and

  705. the Eyewitnesses.

  706. He argues,

  707. for example,

  708. that many of

  709. the eyewitnesses

  710. to Jesus'

  711. life,

  712. death and

  713. resurrection

  714. were still

  715. in wide

  716. active

  717. circulation

  718. and

  719. the

  720. first

  721. years

  722. and

  723. were

  724. able

  725. to

  726. function

  727. as

  728. trusted,

  729. authoritative

  730. sources and

  731. guardians of

  732. the tradition,

  733. a commonly

  734. revered

  735. practice and

  736. presence in

  737. oral societies.

  738. Even as

  739. advancing age

  740. took them away

  741. from the

  742. living community,

  743. the wide range

  744. of years in

  745. which the

  746. early church

  747. was populated

  748. with some

  749. combination of

  750. either first

  751. hand observers

  752. of Christ,

  753. elders that

  754. sat personally

  755. at their feet,

  756. and the

  757. disciples of

  758. those who

  759. had heard

  760. these accounts

  761. of Jesus

  762. from an

  763. original source

  764. stretches well

  765. into the

  766. second century.

  767. So you see,

  768. what we have

  769. is not made

  770. up.

  771. They are

  772. eyewitnesses

  773. accounts that

  774. could be checked

  775. from people who

  776. were there and

  777. as they passed

  778. it on one to

  779. another, they

  780. could investigate

  781. for themselves.

  782. So are you

  783. able to

  784. explain what

  785. you believe and

  786. why you believe

  787. and have a

  788. defence for

  789. the truth?

  790. And let me

  791. encourage you at

  792. this time as

  793. well, why don't

  794. you come?

  795. In all seriousness,

  796. come to

  797. NBC this week.

  798. The whole

  799. theme is on

  800. the topic of

  801. apologetics.

  802. Come for an

  803. evening just to

  804. find out maybe

  805. you would stay

  806. for more.

  807. We must all

  808. be prepared

  809. to give

  810. an answer.

  811. Second,

  812. always be

  813. prepared to

  814. give an

  815. answer to

  816. everyone who

  817. asks you.

  818. You see,

  819. if somebody

  820. is going to

  821. ask you

  822. about your

  823. faith and

  824. what you

  825. believe,

  826. it implies

  827. that you

  828. must be

  829. living a

  830. life that

  831. is so

  832. different

  833. that people

  834. are looking

  835. at you and

  836. watching you

  837. and they're

  838. intrigued about

  839. the way you

  840. live your

  841. life.

  842. And so

  843. they begin

  844. to ask

  845. you

  846. questions.

  847. Go back

  848. to 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2:11

  849. chapter 2

  850. verse 11.

  851. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2:11

  852. chapter 2

  853. verse 11.

  854. Dear friends,

  855. I urge you

  856. as foreigners

  857. and exiles,

  858. so strangers

  859. who live in

  860. the world,

  861. to abstain

  862. from sinful

  863. desires which

  864. war against

  865. your soul.

  866. Live such

  867. good lives

  868. among the

  869. pagans,

  870. among those

  871. who do not

  872. believe,

  873. that though

  874. they accuse

  875. you of

  876. doing wrong,

  877. they may

  878. see your

  879. good deeds

  880. and glorify

  881. God on

  882. the day

  883. he visits

  884. us.

  885. You see,

  886. our life

  887. is in

  888. itself to

  889. be an

  890. apologetic

  891. for the

  892. gospel.

  893. People should

  894. be able to

  895. look at our

  896. lives and

  897. see a

  898. difference,

  899. a life that

  900. backs up

  901. the message

  902. that we

  903. seek to

  904. tell.

  905. And people

  906. will begin

  907. to ask

  908. questions like,

  909. well,

  910. why do you

  911. do good to

  912. those who

  913. hurt you?

  914. Why is it

  915. that you

  916. never seem

  917. to get

  918. angry?

  919. Why is it

  920. that you

  921. respond in

  922. kindness even

  923. when you've

  924. been wronged?

  925. Why do you

  926. respect your

  927. boss even

  928. when he

  929. disrespects

  930. and mistreats

  931. you?

  932. you?

  933. Why is it

  934. that you

  935. still love

  936. your spouse

  937. even when

  938. they treat

  939. you like

  940. that?

  941. Why do

  942. you repay,

  943. nor why do

  944. you not

  945. repay,

  946. evil with

  947. evil and

  948. insult with

  949. insult?

  950. Why is it

  951. that you

  952. don't sleep

  953. with your

  954. boyfriend or

  955. your girlfriend?

  956. You see,

  957. if we're

  958. followers of

  959. Jesus,

  960. our lives

  961. will be so

  962. shaped by

  963. the gospel,

  964. our life

  965. will be a

  966. living example

  967. and apologetic

  968. for the gospel

  969. and people

  970. will see and

  971. begin to ask,

  972. why is it

  973. that you're

  974. like this?

  975. Always be

  976. prepared to

  977. give an

  978. answer to

  979. everyone who

  980. asks of

  981. you.

  982. And then

  983. third,

  984. always be

  985. prepared to

  986. give an

  987. answer to

  988. everyone who

  989. asks you to

  990. give the

  991. reason for

  992. the hope

  993. you have.

  994. But what is

  995. this hope

  996. that we

  997. have?

  998. What is

  999. this hope

  1000. that causes

  1001. us to

  1002. live so

  1003. differently?

  1004. Well,

  1005. remember back

  1006. in chapter

  1007. 1 verse

  1008. 3,

  1009. it is this

  1010. living hope

  1011. through the

  1012. resurrection of

  1013. Jesus Christ

  1014. from the

  1015. dead.

  1016. This is not

  1017. a dead

  1018. hope,

  1019. this is an

  1020. alive hope,

  1021. a hope that

  1022. shapes how we

  1023. live our life

  1024. today and

  1025. shapes how we

  1026. view the

  1027. future.

  1028. hope in

  1029. the Bible

  1030. is not

  1031. wishful

  1032. thinking.

  1033. It is

  1034. rock solid,

  1035. unshakable and

  1036. dependable

  1037. certainty of

  1038. our future.

  1039. In other

  1040. words,

  1041. our hope is

  1042. guaranteed by

  1043. the historical

  1044. fact that

  1045. Jesus Christ

  1046. rose again

  1047. from the

  1048. dead.

  1049. And this

  1050. certain hope

  1051. shapes and

  1052. affects how

  1053. we live.

  1054. It gives

  1055. meaning to

  1056. our life as

  1057. we face

  1058. into difficulty,

  1059. as we face

  1060. death, as we

  1061. face hardships.

  1062. we've got

  1063. this hope.

  1064. And it

  1065. changes

  1066. everything.

  1067. Listen

  1068. again to

  1069. a quote

  1070. from the

  1071. book.

  1072. This is a

  1073. quote actually

  1074. from Tim

  1075. Keller and

  1076. he says

  1077. this,

  1078. each year

  1079. at Easter

  1080. I get to

  1081. preach on

  1082. the resurrection.

  1083. resurrection.

  1084. In my

  1085. sermon I

  1086. always say

  1087. to my

  1088. skeptical

  1089. and secular

  1090. friends that

  1091. even if they

  1092. can't believe

  1093. in the

  1094. resurrection,

  1095. they should

  1096. want it to

  1097. be true.

  1098. Most of

  1099. them care

  1100. deeply about

  1101. justice for

  1102. the poor,

  1103. alleviating

  1104. hunger and

  1105. disease and

  1106. caring for

  1107. the environment.

  1108. Yet many

  1109. of them

  1110. believe that

  1111. the material

  1112. world was

  1113. caused by

  1114. an accident

  1115. and that

  1116. the world

  1117. and everything

  1118. in it will

  1119. eventually

  1120. simply burn

  1121. up in the

  1122. death of

  1123. the sun.

  1124. They find it

  1125. discouraging

  1126. that so few

  1127. people care

  1128. about justice

  1129. without realizing

  1130. that their

  1131. own worldview

  1132. undermines

  1133. any motivation

  1134. to make the

  1135. world a better

  1136. place.

  1137. Why sacrifice

  1138. for the needs

  1139. of others

  1140. if in the

  1141. end nothing

  1142. we do

  1143. will make

  1144. any difference?

  1145. If the

  1146. resurrection

  1147. of Jesus

  1148. happened

  1149. however

  1150. that means

  1151. there is

  1152. infinite hope

  1153. and reason

  1154. to pour

  1155. ourselves out

  1156. for the

  1157. needs

  1158. of the

  1159. world.

  1160. You see

  1161. if the

  1162. resurrection

  1163. isn't

  1164. true

  1165. we have

  1166. come from

  1167. nowhere

  1168. we are

  1169. going

  1170. nowhere

  1171. and there is

  1172. no shape

  1173. or meaning

  1174. or purpose

  1175. to life

  1176. today

  1177. but because

  1178. we have a

  1179. resurrection

  1180. hope

  1181. we can

  1182. live our

  1183. lives in

  1184. service

  1185. towards others

  1186. and give

  1187. our life

  1188. to all kinds

  1189. of good

  1190. things

  1191. because it

  1192. counts

  1193. because Jesus

  1194. is risen

  1195. because Jesus

  1196. is alive

  1197. I have

  1198. hope

  1199. unshakable

  1200. hope for

  1201. today

  1202. and hope

  1203. for all

  1204. eternity

  1205. so first

  1206. do not

  1207. fear those

  1208. who threaten

  1209. you

  1210. second

  1211. speak

  1212. hope

  1213. to those

  1214. who ask

  1215. you

  1216. and then

  1217. third

  1218. respond

  1219. gently

  1220. to those

  1221. who are

  1222. against

  1223. you

  1224. look at the

  1225. rest of

  1226. verse 15

  1227. chapter

  1228. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  1229. chapter 3

  1230. end of

  1231. verse 15

  1232. but do

  1233. this

  1234. with

  1235. gentleness

  1236. and respect

  1237. keeping a

  1238. clear conscience

  1239. so that

  1240. those who

  1241. speak

  1242. maliciously

  1243. against

  1244. your good

  1245. behaviour

  1246. in Christ

  1247. may be

  1248. ashamed

  1249. of their

  1250. slander

  1251. look if

  1252. we're going

  1253. to be

  1254. people

  1255. who want

  1256. to talk

  1257. about

  1258. Jesus

  1259. then our

  1260. words

  1261. and our

  1262. behaviour

  1263. must reflect

  1264. the Jesus

  1265. we want

  1266. people to

  1267. know

  1268. how can

  1269. we talk

  1270. to people

  1271. about

  1272. forgiveness

  1273. if I

  1274. hold a

  1275. grudge

  1276. how can

  1277. I talk

  1278. about

  1279. grace

  1280. if I

  1281. ostracise

  1282. those who

  1283. wrong me

  1284. how can

  1285. I talk

  1286. about

  1287. a loving

  1288. God

  1289. but never

  1290. invite

  1291. somebody

  1292. into my

  1293. home

  1294. you see

  1295. how we

  1296. live

  1297. and what

  1298. we say

  1299. really

  1300. matters

  1301. one author

  1302. put it

  1303. like this

  1304. Christians

  1305. need to

  1306. look like

  1307. what they're

  1308. talking about

  1309. what communicates

  1310. now is

  1311. personal

  1312. authenticity

  1313. the gospel

  1314. message must

  1315. not just be

  1316. heard

  1317. it must be

  1318. seen and

  1319. demonstrated

  1320. in the way

  1321. that we

  1322. live and

  1323. talk

  1324. look at the

  1325. end of verse

  1326. 15 again

  1327. we are to

  1328. do this

  1329. we are to

  1330. speak

  1331. give a

  1332. reason for

  1333. the hope

  1334. that we

  1335. have

  1336. with

  1337. gentleness

  1338. and respect

  1339. that means

  1340. not being

  1341. insistent on

  1342. your rights

  1343. or demanding

  1344. your own

  1345. way or

  1346. having this

  1347. great

  1348. argument that

  1349. kind of

  1350. clatters

  1351. everybody else

  1352. essentially it's

  1353. actually calling

  1354. us to be

  1355. just like

  1356. Christ

  1357. have a look

  1358. back at

  1359. chapter 2

  1360. verse 20

  1361. here is the

  1362. example of

  1363. Jesus

  1364. chapter 2

  1365. verse 20

  1366. how is it

  1367. to your

  1368. credit

  1369. if you

  1370. receive a

  1371. beating for

  1372. doing wrong

  1373. and endure

  1374. it

  1375. but if you

  1376. suffer for

  1377. doing good

  1378. and you

  1379. endure it

  1380. this is

  1381. commendable

  1382. before God

  1383. to this

  1384. you were

  1385. called

  1386. because Christ

  1387. suffered for

  1388. you

  1389. leaving you

  1390. an example

  1391. that you

  1392. should follow

  1393. in his

  1394. footsteps

  1395. he committed

  1396. no sin

  1397. and no

  1398. deceit was

  1399. found in

  1400. his mouth

  1401. when they

  1402. hurled their

  1403. insults at

  1404. him

  1405. he didn't

  1406. retaliate

  1407. when he

  1408. suffered

  1409. he made

  1410. no threats

  1411. instead he

  1412. entrusted

  1413. himself to

  1414. him who

  1415. judges

  1416. justly

  1417. you see

  1418. if we're

  1419. insulted

  1420. well

  1421. I don't

  1422. need to

  1423. retaliate

  1424. if you

  1425. suffered

  1426. from

  1427. somebody

  1428. we don't

  1429. need to

  1430. make threats

  1431. in return

  1432. we don't

  1433. have to

  1434. get back

  1435. at people

  1436. we respond

  1437. with gentleness

  1438. and respect

  1439. why

  1440. because we

  1441. entrust our

  1442. life to

  1443. him who

  1444. judges

  1445. justly

  1446. I don't

  1447. have to

  1448. repay

  1449. insult

  1450. with insult

  1451. I don't

  1452. have to

  1453. get back

  1454. at others

  1455. God

  1456. is just

  1457. and he

  1458. will sort

  1459. everything

  1460. out

  1461. he will

  1462. hold me

  1463. account

  1464. and he

  1465. will hold

  1466. everybody

  1467. else to

  1468. account

  1469. so instead

  1470. I must

  1471. simply pray

  1472. that I

  1473. will become

  1474. more like

  1475. Christ

  1476. in my

  1477. behaviour

  1478. and in

  1479. the way

  1480. that I

  1481. speak

  1482. to others

  1483. you see

  1484. how we

  1485. respond

  1486. and how

  1487. we speak

  1488. really

  1489. matters

  1490. look at the

  1491. rest chapter

  1492. 3

  1493. verse 16

  1494. keeping a

  1495. clear conscience

  1496. so that

  1497. those who

  1498. speak

  1499. maliciously

  1500. against your

  1501. good behaviour

  1502. in Christ

  1503. may be

  1504. ashamed of

  1505. their slander

  1506. in other words

  1507. as people

  1508. see your

  1509. life

  1510. as they

  1511. hear your

  1512. words

  1513. as they

  1514. watch how

  1515. you respond

  1516. they will

  1517. be convicted

  1518. of how

  1519. they treated

  1520. you

  1521. and it

  1522. may cause

  1523. them to

  1524. turn to

  1525. Christ

  1526. let me

  1527. illustrate this

  1528. with two

  1529. stories

  1530. one is a

  1531. bad example

  1532. the second

  1533. one is a

  1534. good example

  1535. you may

  1536. have heard

  1537. me say

  1538. this

  1539. before

  1540. but

  1541. in my

  1542. neighbourhood

  1543. where we

  1544. live in

  1545. our little

  1546. cul-de-sac

  1547. we got

  1548. something wrong

  1549. or rather

  1550. I got

  1551. something wrong

  1552. with one

  1553. of the

  1554. neighbours

  1555. and it

  1556. caused

  1557. offence

  1558. to them

  1559. it was

  1560. my fault

  1561. and I

  1562. went to

  1563. go and

  1564. see them

  1565. about

  1566. something

  1567. else

  1568. and

  1569. knocked

  1570. on the

  1571. door

  1572. and they

  1573. came to

  1574. the door

  1575. and they

  1576. were really

  1577. quite

  1578. cross

  1579. and this

  1580. is what

  1581. they said

  1582. and you

  1583. call

  1584. yourself

  1585. a

  1586. Christian

  1587. I'd

  1588. never

  1589. said to

  1590. them

  1591. I'm

  1592. a

  1593. Christian

  1594. but they

  1595. said you

  1596. call

  1597. yourself

  1598. a

  1599. Christian

  1600. and you

  1601. did

  1602. that

  1603. you see

  1604. how we

  1605. behave

  1606. and what

  1607. we say

  1608. really

  1609. matters

  1610. it

  1611. affects

  1612. people

  1613. that's

  1614. the bad

  1615. example

  1616. of

  1617. living

  1618. the wrong

  1619. kind of

  1620. life

  1621. and saying

  1622. the wrong

  1623. kind of

  1624. thing

  1625. here's

  1626. a good

  1627. example

  1628. I have

  1629. a friend

  1630. who grew

  1631. up

  1632. a pretty

  1633. rough

  1634. life

  1635. on one

  1636. occasion

  1637. he told

  1638. me

  1639. that

  1640. somebody

  1641. was

  1642. running

  1643. after

  1644. him

  1645. and he

  1646. threw

  1647. a gas

  1648. bottle

  1649. back down

  1650. on top

  1651. of them

  1652. and I

  1653. said

  1654. well what

  1655. happened

  1656. he said

  1657. I don't

  1658. know

  1659. he never

  1660. came back

  1661. again

  1662. so that

  1663. was the

  1664. kind of

  1665. character

  1666. he was

  1667. he didn't

  1668. have time

  1669. for

  1670. Christians

  1671. no time

  1672. at all

  1673. but he

  1674. ended up

  1675. working

  1676. for a

  1677. Christian

  1678. and

  1679. just

  1680. observed

  1681. the person

  1682. had talked

  1683. to them

  1684. about

  1685. Christ

  1686. but

  1687. for him

  1688. didn't

  1689. want to

  1690. know

  1691. but he

  1692. observed

  1693. something

  1694. that

  1695. happened

  1696. there was

  1697. an accident

  1698. in the

  1699. kitchen

  1700. there was

  1701. a big

  1702. mess

  1703. and the

  1704. person he

  1705. was working

  1706. for

  1707. they

  1708. didn't

  1709. say

  1710. anything

  1711. they were

  1712. completely

  1713. calm

  1714. they didn't

  1715. explode in

  1716. anger

  1717. or

  1718. expletives

  1719. or anything

  1720. else

  1721. like that

  1722. that

  1723. was the

  1724. actual

  1725. turning

  1726. point

  1727. for

  1728. Barry

  1729. becoming

  1730. a

  1731. Christian

  1732. Barry

  1733. now

  1734. works

  1735. in

  1736. Nicaragua

  1737. runs a

  1738. Christian

  1739. school

  1740. seeking to

  1741. reach out

  1742. to the

  1743. community

  1744. there

  1745. one

  1746. simple

  1747. tiny

  1748. act

  1749. in a

  1750. kitchen

  1751. used

  1752. by God

  1753. to begin

  1754. the process

  1755. of changing

  1756. somebody's

  1757. life

  1758. you see

  1759. what I

  1760. say

  1761. what you

  1762. say

  1763. how we

  1764. live

  1765. really

  1766. matters

  1767. it may

  1768. cause

  1769. people

  1770. to be

  1771. convicted

  1772. of how

  1773. they

  1774. treat

  1775. you

  1776. and it

  1777. may cause

  1778. them

  1779. to turn

  1780. to

  1781. Christ

  1782. so as

  1783. we

  1784. go into

  1785. a new

  1786. week

  1787. as we

  1788. will meet

  1789. again with

  1790. our work

  1791. colleagues

  1792. hang out

  1793. with our

  1794. friends

  1795. go to

  1796. school

  1797. wherever

  1798. we are

  1799. as we

  1800. think about

  1801. sharing

  1802. Christ

  1803. don't fear

  1804. their threats

  1805. don't be

  1806. afraid

  1807. we have

  1808. this wonderful

  1809. blessing

  1810. inheritance

  1811. that can

  1812. never perish

  1813. spoil or

  1814. fade

  1815. what can

  1816. they do

  1817. to you

  1818. speak

  1819. hope

  1820. to those

  1821. who ask

  1822. of you

  1823. and respond

  1824. gently

  1825. to those

  1826. who are

  1827. against you

  1828. live

  1829. credible

  1830. godly

  1831. Christ

  1832. like

  1833. lives

  1834. in the

  1835. world

  1836. in which

  1837. we

  1838. live

  1839. let's

  1840. pray

  1841. that god

  1842. will enable

  1843. us to

  1844. do that

  1845. well

  1846. father

  1847. thank you

  1848. for

  1849. your

  1850. word

  1851. for

  1852. its

  1853. truth

  1854. thank you

  1855. that it

  1856. is

  1857. dependable

  1858. thank you

  1859. that we

  1860. have

  1861. a

  1862. certain

  1863. hope

  1864. hope

  1865. the

  1866. hope

  1867. of the

  1868. resurrection

  1869. from the

  1870. grave

  1871. life

  1872. with you

  1873. today

  1874. and life

  1875. for all

  1876. eternity

  1877. father

  1878. would you

  1879. give to

  1880. each

  1881. person

  1882. here

  1883. today

  1884. opportunity

  1885. to be

  1886. able to

  1887. speak

  1888. of that

  1889. hope

  1890. to be

  1891. able to

  1892. bring that

  1893. hope into

  1894. the darkness

  1895. to be able

  1896. to speak

  1897. of jesus

  1898. father help

  1899. us that we

  1900. would not

  1901. fear what

  1902. people say

  1903. help us to

  1904. revere the

  1905. lord

  1906. change us

  1907. to be more

  1908. like christ

  1909. so that our

  1910. behavior and

  1911. our words

  1912. reflect him

  1913. in all that

  1914. we say

  1915. and do

  1916. and we

  1917. pray that you

  1918. would give us

  1919. confidence

  1920. and courage

  1921. to speak

  1922. up

  1923. and to

  1924. stand up

  1925. for the

  1926. lord jesus

  1927. and we

  1928. pray father

  1929. that through

  1930. our lives

  1931. as weak

  1932. and as

  1933. failing as

  1934. we so

  1935. often are

  1936. that by

  1937. your holy

  1938. spirit you

  1939. would be at

  1940. work within

  1941. us

  1942. leading more

  1943. and more

  1944. people to

  1945. the lord

  1946. jesus christ

  1947. help us

  1948. we pray

  1949. in jesus

  1950. name

  1951. amen

  1952. we're going

  1953. to sing

  1954. which is a

  1955. rallying cry

  1956. i guess
