  1. I'm sure you can hear my accent. I tell people, we live in Bristol, UK, and so they think we should have a West Country accent.

  2. I tell them it is a West Country accent, but it's a lot further west, near that westernmost outpost of Irish civilization called San Francisco.

  3. That's where we're from. So I don't think my accent is difficult to understand in any event.

  4. But my wife and I, we work for Africa Inland Mission. I'm the international director, and our international office is in Bristol, so that's why we're there.

  5. But we worked for about 20 years in Africa, 10 years in a little place called Comoro Islands down by Madagascar, five years in another country called Djibouti.

  6. And probably most of you have never heard of Djibouti, but you can look it up and find it. It really is there.

  7. And then another few years in another country in the Horn of Africa that I don't like to say out loud just for security issues.

  8. But we were actually kicked out of that country after a few years, and since then we've been in Bristol with our organization.

  9. We have two grown-up daughters and one grandson.

  10. I didn't have an option of showing pictures, but I would show you a whole bunch of pictures of him, but that gets kind of irritating after a while, doesn't it?

  11. I was in South Korea not long ago, and I offered to show pictures of my grandson to some Korean people, and they said,

  12. oh, in Korea you have to pay people to show pictures of your grandchildren, so I didn't want to do that.

  13. I'm going to talk with you about sending and what it means and the privilege of sending missionaries.

  14. I understand sometimes we don't like to use the word missionary anymore.

  15. In the U.K., that's not a popular word because it just brings up all these colonial notions and, you know,

  16. these old guys in their pith helmets marching through the jungle.

  17. So people almost have abandoned that word.

  18. I still use it, but if you prefer another word, they call them global partners in the U.K.

  19. or international workers or this and that, but I still stick with the old term.

  20. So, missionaries is what I'm going to talk about and the particular aspect of sending missionaries.

  21. My text is John chapter 20, starting in verse 19.

    John 20 chapter mention

  22. It's only four or five verses I'll read, 19 through 23.

  23. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week,

  24. the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of Jesus,

  25. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,

  26. Peace be with you.

  27. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

  28. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

  29. Jesus said to them, Peace be with you.

  30. As the Father has sent me, even so I'm sending you.

  31. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,

  32. Receive the Holy Spirit.

  33. If you forgive the sins of any, they're forgiven them.

  34. If you will withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.

  35. Serving as senders.

  36. That is a particular privilege and prerogative of a local church like yours.

  37. Serving as sending.

  38. Serving as senders.

  39. Usually when I preach in the UK or the United States,

  40. there's these apocryphal stories of people supporting their missionaries in Africa

  41. by sending them used tea bags.

  42. And that might seem like a funny story.

  43. You might think that's one of these Christian legends that goes around the churches.

  44. But I've actually met at least two missionaries who used to receive used tea bags

  45. that were sent to them in Africa.

  46. So that apocryphal story is really true.

  47. But that's not what I'm going to talk about today.

  48. I'm not going to talk about what you might think are the usual themes of sending,

  49. sending and supporting, how we need to pray for our missionaries,

  50. how we need to financially support them, how we need to visit them,

  51. welcome them, emotionally support them, send them used tea bags

  52. or your old worn-out clothes or whatever.

  53. You know all these things.

  54. And you don't need me to stand here and say that you should pray for

  55. and financially support and encourage any missionaries that you know.

  56. I think that's pretty obvious and you know it.

  57. The thing that I want to talk about today is the privilege of sending.

  58. Before I do, let's stop just a minute and dwell on the wonder of this passage.

  59. We read through this.

  60. We're probably pretty used to it.

  61. We read through these resurrection stories.

  62. But let's just stop for a minute.

  63. These are the disciples.

  64. It's Sunday.

  65. It's the day Jesus has risen from the dead.

  66. A couple of them have apparently seen Him already.

  67. But they're in this room.

  68. The door's locked.

  69. They're still confused.

  70. They're still very scared.

  71. And all of a sudden, Jesus comes and stands among them.

  72. I just stopped for a minute and thought about that this morning as I was preparing.

  73. It's like, Jesus is there standing among them.

  74. This man they've seen crucified three days before is now standing among them.

  75. Think about how amazing that would have been for the people in that room.

  76. All of a sudden, Jesus is there.

  77. Jesus is truly risen from the dead and Jesus is standing here among us.

  78. Think how amazing it would be if Jesus was standing here among us.

  79. And I know He is here by the Holy Spirit.

  80. But what if Jesus was physically standing here among us?

  81. That would blow our minds, wouldn't it?

  82. And think of these disciples who'd seen Him killed three days before,

  83. who don't have the benefits that we have.

  84. And all of a sudden, Jesus is there.

  85. Jesus is risen from the dead.

  86. Jesus is with us.

  87. What an amazing moment that must have been for those disciples.

  88. Jesus stood among them.

  89. He rose from the dead.

  90. And He pronounced peace.

  91. Not just once, twice to their troubled souls.

  92. And I know, we get used to this again.

  93. Peace be upon you.

  94. Be a shalom in the Arabs.

  95. Salam alaikum.

  96. Whatever you want to say.

  97. But Jesus speaking peace.

  98. Peace.

  99. Jesus still speaks peace to troubled souls.

  100. He showed them the ultimate proof of His grace and love.

  101. He says, look at my hands.

  102. Look at my side.

  103. What greater proof could they have?

  104. And what greater proof could we have of the grace and love of Jesus Christ?

  105. He died for me.

  106. He died for me.

  107. He breathes on them.

  108. He says, receive the Holy Spirit.

  109. He talks about forgiveness of sins.

  110. And somehow gives them even power and authority to forgive sins.

  111. Think of the comfort, peace, and the grace the disciples would have received at that moment.

  112. And that very same comfort, grace, and peace is available to us.

  113. Jesus is present with His people.

  114. Offering forgiveness.

  115. Offering proof of His love.

  116. Offering peace.

  117. Offering power of the Holy Spirit.

  118. Offering peace.

  119. Yeah.

  120. Yeah.

  121. Today, just as much as He was there in that upper room.

  122. If we're talking about mission sending,

  123. I need to say something that you all know,

  124. but it seems like it needs to be said anyway.

  125. Your country for years has been a destination for missionaries,

  126. not a country that was sending missionaries.

  127. And there are still, I met a number of missionaries that are here

  128. helping in your church planting efforts in this country.

  129. But at the same time, you are now the ones bringing the gospel to Ireland

  130. and beyond Ireland.

  131. Your country was a destination for missionaries.

  132. Now your country is starting to become a sender of missionaries.

  133. And can we just stop and appreciate what an amazing thing that is?

  134. What an amazing thing that the Lord is doing in this country.

  135. I think of, in just looking out at you and thinking of the people I met

  136. this last weekend of the multicultural nature of Ireland now.

  137. And that's another thing that God has done,

  138. how God has blessed Ireland by bringing in believers from other nations.

  139. Same thing in the UK.

  140. You know this.

  141. The biggest churches in London, they're all African churches.

  142. Incredible thing.

  143. I was at a conference a couple months ago,

  144. and the man who was standing up in front, he said,

  145. he was a British man, he said,

  146. we prayed for revival,

  147. and we didn't recognize it when it came,

  148. because its face was black.

  149. Wow.

  150. That was quite a statement.

  151. The Lord is using Africans,

  152. Latin Americans,

  153. Asians,

  154. to bring renewal and revival

  155. to our churches.

  156. Ireland was a valley of dry bones,

  157. not so many years ago,

  158. as far as the gospel was concerned.

  159. And the Lord is breathing life

  160. into this country.

  161. You may be small,

  162. but you are here.

  163. You know the gospel,

  164. you know the territory,

  165. you know the people,

  166. you know the language,

  167. you know the culture,

  168. you have the word of God,

  169. you have the Holy Spirit,

  170. you have the church,

  171. everything is here in you,

  172. in your churches,

  173. to bring the gospel

  174. to Caragalline,

  175. to Cork,

  176. to Ireland,

  177. to Europe,

  178. to North Africa,

  179. to the ends of the earth.

  180. Everything is here

  181. in your churches already.

  182. I use the word missionaries,

  183. and let me just define that term

  184. before I go any further.

  185. There are a lot of ways,

  186. again,

  187. to define this,

  188. but here's what I'm talking about

  189. when I talk about a missionary.

  190. With few exceptions,

  191. missionaries are people

  192. who are sent.

  193. They're sent ones.

  194. It's the Latin derivation

  195. of the Greek word apostolos,

  196. from which we get apostle.

  197. An apostle is a sent one.

  198. Okay,

  199. literally that's what it means.

  200. Okay,

  201. so missionary in the same sense.

  202. Missionaries are people

  203. who were sent,

  204. usually cross-culturally,

  205. to perform or support

  206. apostolic ministry

  207. of preaching,

  208. teaching,

  209. building the church

  210. of Jesus Christ.

  211. Okay,

  212. that's what we consider

  213. missionaries to be.

  214. There are a great variety

  215. of ways to do this.

  216. And people who are

  217. in support roles,

  218. not front-line preaching

  219. and teaching,

  220. they're critical

  221. to this effort.

  222. But fundamentally,

  223. that's what mission

  224. and missionaries are.

  225. People who were sent

  226. to advance the kingdom of God,

  227. bringing the gospel

  228. to people in places

  229. where there is no gospel.

  230. Okay,

  231. just so you know

  232. when I'm talking about missions,

  233. what I'm talking about.

  234. Okay,

  235. let's go back to the text

  236. for just a minute.

  237. John 20,

  238. 19 through 23.

  239. What I want to emphasize

  240. is the importance

  241. and privilege

  242. of sending.

  243. What happened

  244. on that first Easter?

  245. Who did Jesus see?

  246. As far as I can

  247. piece together the events,

  248. or who saw Jesus

  249. more likely?

  250. First of all,

  251. it was Mary Magdalene,

  252. as far as I can tell.

  253. And then there were

  254. some other women.

  255. Okay,

  256. so Mary,

  257. the women,

  258. and then Peter.

  259. He met Peter.

  260. And then the two

  261. on the Emmaus Road.

  262. Those are the ones

  263. that are listed.

  264. And then these 12.

  265. So,

  266. this is the day

  267. he rose from the dead.

  268. One of the first meetings,

  269. the first meeting

  270. he has

  271. with all the disciples

  272. together.

  273. What does he say?

  274. He says,

  275. Peace be upon you.

  276. Then he says,

  277. Peace be upon you.

  278. He says that twice.

  279. And then,

  280. what's the very next thing

  281. out of his mouth?

  282. As the Father

  283. has sent me,

  284. so I am sending you.

  285. Think about the things

  286. he could have said

  287. after those initial

  288. greetings of peace.

  289. Peace be upon you.

  290. Think about the things

  291. he could have said.

  292. He could have said,

  293. Why weren't you there

  294. with the women?

  295. Why weren't you there

  296. at the tomb?

  297. Why didn't you believe

  298. what I said?

  299. There's all kinds of things

  300. he could have said.

  301. He didn't say those things.

  302. He said,

  303. The Father has sent me,

  304. so I am sending you.

  305. Think of the importance

  306. of sending.

  307. That that's almost

  308. the first thing

  309. that comes out

  310. of Jesus' mouth

  311. the first time

  312. he sees his disciples.

  313. Sending is a big deal.

  314. God sent Noah.

  315. God sent Abraham.

  316. God sent Moses.

  317. God sent the prophets.

  318. Finally, God sent Jesus.

  319. It's a huge priority

  320. for our God

  321. that he sends.

  322. Third thing he says to them,

  323. I am risen.

  324. Peace be upon you.

  325. Let's get going.

  326. And the sending

  327. that started that day

  328. continues until this day.

  329. Don't believe that was

  330. exclusively for the disciples.

  331. It comes down to us.

  332. As the Father has sent me,

  333. so I send you.

  334. Sending is a joint enterprise

  335. of the Father,

  336. the Son,

  337. the Holy Spirit,

  338. and the church.

  339. Think about that for a minute.

  340. Our little churches,

  341. and even if it's some huge

  342. American mega church,

  343. it's still really very small

  344. compared to the Father,

  345. the Son,

  346. and the Holy Spirit.

  347. Our little churches,

  348. we have the privilege

  349. of partnering

  350. with the Holy Trinity

  351. in sending missionaries.

  352. It is a high privilege

  353. that the Lord gives

  354. to his church.

  355. Who is sent?

  356. I believe that all of us

  357. are sent.

  358. Acts 1.8,

  359. You receive power

  360. when the Holy Spirit

  361. comes upon you.

  362. You be my witnesses

  363. in Jerusalem,

  364. Judea, Samaria,

  365. the ends of the earth.

  366. We'll talk about that

  367. a little bit later.

  368. How does he send?

  369. As the Father has sent me,

  370. so I'm sending you.

  371. Okay,

  372. what exactly does that mean?

  373. I like it.

  374. It's one of these

  375. little preacher tricks

  376. because there's some alliteration.

  377. There's three M's in there.

  378. Okay,

  379. there's the means.

  380. He sends by the power

  381. of the Holy Spirit.

  382. He breathes on them,

  383. says receive the Holy Spirit.

  384. There's the message,

  385. forgiveness of sins.

  386. Again,

  387. Luke 24,

  388. Luke 24, 47,

  389. repentance and forgiveness

  390. of sins should be proclaimed

  391. in his name

  392. to all nations

  393. beginning from Jerusalem.

  394. By the way,

  395. there's a great commission

  396. in all four Gospels

  397. and in the book of Acts.

  398. Right?

  399. It's not just in Matthew.

  400. We're talking about

  401. John's commission here,

  402. but there's one in each

  403. of the Gospels.

  404. Yeah.

  405. And,

  406. okay,

  407. the means,

  408. the message,

  409. and finally,

  410. the method,

  411. as the Father has sent me,

  412. so I send you.

  413. Now,

  414. with those first two,

  415. the means,

  416. meaning the Holy Spirit,

  417. the message,

  418. forgiveness of sins,

  419. there's some little

  420. difficult things

  421. to understand

  422. in this text

  423. about when did they

  424. actually receive

  425. the Holy Spirit.

  426. Was it there?

  427. Was it the day of Pentecost?

  428. What does it mean

  429. that the disciples

  430. have the authority

  431. to forgive sins

  432. or retain sins?

  433. I'm not going to go into those.

  434. I'm going to let

  435. your capable pastor

  436. talk about

  437. those with you

  438. another day.

  439. That's the privilege

  440. of a visiting speaker.

  441. He gets to jump over

  442. the difficult things

  443. and leave it for the pastor.

  444. He doesn't have that privilege.

  445. I want to focus

  446. on the method.

  447. The method,

  448. as the Father has sent me,

  449. so I send you.

  450. So,

  451. if we want to know

  452. how Jesus sends the disciples,

  453. we need to look at

  454. how the Father sent Jesus.

  455. So,

  456. how did the Father

  457. send Jesus?

  458. Again,

  459. I don't believe

  460. this is just for

  461. foreign missionaries

  462. like myself.

  463. I believe this is

  464. for all of us.

  465. First of all,

  466. he sent Jesus

  467. as the sacrifice.

  468. We know that.

  469. He does not send us

  470. to be a sacrifice

  471. for sins.

  472. The sacrifice of Christ

  473. was done once for all.

  474. But he does send us

  475. to lay down our lives

  476. for the advance

  477. of the kingdom of God.

  478. Paul says in Philippians 2.7,

  479. he says,

  480. even if I'm being poured out

  481. like a drink offering

  482. on the sacrifice

  483. and service

  484. of your faith,

  485. I rejoice

  486. and share my joy

  487. with you all.

  488. Paul said,

  489. I'm willing to be poured out

  490. like that wine

  491. they used to pour

  492. on the sacrifices

  493. in the Old Testament.

  494. Paul said,

  495. that's what I'm willing

  496. to be poured out

  497. for the church

  498. and for the gospel.

  499. That's the way

  500. the Father sent Jesus.

  501. That's the way

  502. Jesus sends us.

  503. He sends,

  504. the Father sent Jesus

  505. to serve.

  506. Matthew 20,

  507. 26 through 28,

  508. Son of Man

  509. did not come

  510. to be served,

  511. but to serve.

  512. Give his life

  513. as a ransom for many.

  514. Again,

  515. our call is not

  516. to give our lives

  517. as a ransom.

  518. No,

  519. done once and for all.

  520. But our call certainly

  521. is to follow

  522. the leading of our Master

  523. and not to want

  524. to be served

  525. but to serve.

  526. He came as a sacrifice.

  527. He came as a servant.

  528. He also came to suffer.

  529. And we know

  530. that Jesus was sent

  531. for the purpose

  532. of the cross.

  533. And as the Father

  534. sent Jesus,

  535. so Jesus sends us.

  536. Paul said this

  537. in Colossians 1, 24,

  538. I rejoice in my sufferings

  539. for your sake

  540. and in my flesh

  541. I'm filling up

  542. what is lacking

  543. in Christ's afflictions.

  544. Now that's a difficult

  545. verse as well

  546. and it certainly

  547. doesn't mean

  548. that Paul is adding

  549. something to the atonement.

  550. No.

  551. Once for all,

  552. but Paul is

  553. willing to suffer

  554. to bring the message

  555. of that atonement

  556. to the Colossians

  557. and to other communities

  558. in the Mediterranean.

  559. So,

  560. sacrifice,

  561. suffering,

  562. service

  563. are the ways

  564. the Father sent

  565. the Son.

  566. They're ways

  567. the Son

  568. sends the disciples.

  569. Christ was sent

  570. in humility.

  571. Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  572. you know these verses.

  573. He was in the form

  574. of God.

  575. He did not count

  576. equality with God

  577. a thing to be grasped

  578. but emptied himself

  579. taking the form

  580. of a servant

  581. born in the likeness

  582. of men

  583. found in human form.

  584. He humbled himself

  585. by becoming obedient

  586. to the point of death,

  587. even death on a cross.

  588. We keep coming back

  589. to these same things,

  590. these same themes.

  591. They're all linked together

  592. but if the Lord

  593. is sending us out,

  594. it must be

  595. as the Father

  596. sent the Son

  597. in humility.

  598. There's no place

  599. for arrogance

  600. in the people

  601. that the Lord

  602. sends out.

  603. Whether to a local

  604. community here,

  605. in Ireland,

  606. whether to the ends

  607. of the earth,

  608. we go out in humility

  609. following the example

  610. of our Lord.

  611. Incarnationally,

  612. the Father sent

  613. the Son

  614. incarnationally.

  615. That's one of those

  616. big theological words.

  617. Incarnation,

  618. it means He became

  619. flesh.

  620. Okay?

  621. He became one of us.

  622. Stop for a minute

  623. and think about that.

  624. that God the Father

  625. sent His Son.

  626. What an amazing thing

  627. that God the Father

  628. sent His own Son.

  629. He sent a person.

  630. He didn't just send

  631. a message.

  632. He sent a person.

  633. And now,

  634. He continues

  635. to send people.

  636. We send money

  637. to missions?

  638. That's a good thing.

  639. Please keep doing that.

  640. We do media ministries.

  641. I'm involved

  642. in an online ministry,

  643. sharing my faith

  644. with people

  645. in different countries.

  646. That's wonderful.

  647. Keep doing that.

  648. We do short-term things.

  649. Send for two weeks.

  650. That's great.

  651. Okay?

  652. But the model

  653. that we're trying

  654. to follow

  655. is this incarnational model.

  656. As the Father

  657. sent the Son,

  658. so the Son sends us.

  659. We become incarnate

  660. among the peoples

  661. that we're trying

  662. to reach out to.

  663. Okay?

  664. That involves

  665. learning their language.

  666. That involves

  667. understanding their culture.

  668. That involves

  669. living together with them,

  670. sharing life with them

  671. as much as we can.

  672. And that's true in Ireland

  673. as well as is true

  674. in Djibouti

  675. and the Comorra Islands.

  676. Okay?

  677. It's true for all of us.

  678. We are incarnational ministers

  679. as Jesus was incarnated to us.

  680. There's probably other things,

  681. but those are some ideas

  682. about how the Father

  683. sent Jesus.

  684. Now let's look at

  685. a little bit more

  686. about how Jesus sends us.

  687. That's how the Father sent.

  688. How does Jesus send?

  689. First of all,

  690. it's Jesus who sends.

  691. And that's an...

  692. I know I keep saying

  693. obvious things to you,

  694. but sometimes

  695. these obvious things

  696. are good to repeat.

  697. Jesus sends people.

  698. He may use individuals

  699. who hear His call.

  700. He may use churches

  701. who confirm that call,

  702. but it's Jesus who sends.

  703. Better,

  704. it's the Trinity

  705. that sends,

  706. especially the Holy Spirit.

  707. But the Holy Trinity,

  708. the Holy Spirit,

  709. sends through the church.

  710. Okay?

  711. The church called to listen

  712. to the voice of God,

  713. identify people

  714. that the Lord is calling,

  715. commission,

  716. and send,

  717. and train those people.

  718. people.

  719. In AIM,

  720. we are a mission-sending agency.

  721. We send missionaries,

  722. but we do not send anybody

  723. by ourselves.

  724. We only send people

  725. that the church has identified,

  726. that have received their call

  727. through the church,

  728. and that the church has sent to us.

  729. We send them together.

  730. We don't want people

  731. who self-call.

  732. We want people

  733. whose call is confirmed

  734. by the church.

  735. We talk a lot in AIM

  736. about the missionary call.

  737. What does that mean?

  738. Somebody's called

  739. to be a missionary.

  740. And there's mystery here

  741. in the Scripture,

  742. but there's only a couple things

  743. that are really clear.

  744. One is that the missionary call

  745. comes from the Holy Spirit,

  746. and the second is

  747. that it comes

  748. through the church,

  749. or it's confirmed

  750. and acted upon

  751. by the local church.

  752. So,

  753. I'm referring to Acts chapter 13 here,

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  754. where the Holy Spirit

  755. says to the church,

  756. set apart Saul and Barnabas

  757. for the work

  758. that I have called them to.

  759. And that is by far

  760. the clearest teaching

  761. we have anywhere in the Scripture

  762. about a missionary call.

  763. You can see the critical role

  764. that the local church

  765. plays in that.

  766. The call comes

  767. from the Spirit,

  768. but it comes

  769. through the church,

  770. and it's confirmed

  771. and acted upon

  772. by the church.

  773. I believe every church

  774. needs to take this

  775. very seriously.

  776. And we take it seriously

  777. in AIM too.

  778. We do not want people

  779. whose churches

  780. will not confirm

  781. their call to missions.

  782. Okay.

  783. Jesus sends into all the world,

  784. again, Acts 1.8,

  785. Be my witnesses,

  786. Jerusalem,

  787. Judea,

  788. Samaria,

  789. the end of the earth.

  790. What does that mean for us?

  791. Okay.

  792. I don't think it's too hard.

  793. Jerusalem is here.

  794. This is your Jerusalem.

  795. Judea,

  796. same culture,

  797. different location.

  798. So,

  799. a village

  800. that's not far away,

  801. a village in Ireland,

  802. same culture,

  803. needs the gospel,

  804. you send people to there.

  805. That's your Judea.

  806. Okay.

  807. Same culture,

  808. a little bit further away.

  809. Samaria,

  810. now we're talking

  811. cross-cultural,

  812. but similar location.

  813. So,

  814. now we're talking about

  815. reaching out to

  816. Muslim people of Ireland,

  817. Pakistanis,

  818. Indians,

  819. Somali people.

  820. Okay.

  821. Nearby location,

  822. cross-cultural,

  823. Samaria.

  824. Ends of the earth,

  825. still the ends of the earth.

  826. Okay.

  827. Anywhere beyond there.

  828. Okay.

  829. I think this is relevant

  830. to us today,

  831. not just to the disciples,

  832. Jerusalem,

  833. Judea,

  834. Samaria,

  835. and the ends of the earth.

  836. And everybody needs to ask,

  837. where's the Lord sending me?

  838. I believe we're all sent.

  839. Okay.

  840. Where is the Lord sending you?

  841. Most of us,

  842. He's sending us to our friends

  843. and neighbors

  844. and family.

  845. But for some of us,

  846. there's another call

  847. to go further on than that.

  848. But all of us are sent

  849. and all of us

  850. should be asking the Lord,

  851. where are you sending me

  852. for the sake of the gospel?

  853. Who do you want me

  854. to be sharing the gospel with?

  855. Jesus sends as salt and light.

  856. Okay.

  857. Jesus talks about

  858. you're the salt of the earth.

  859. You're the light of the world.

  860. It's not always easy to understand

  861. what He's talking about there.

  862. I believe He's talking about

  863. our physical presence

  864. and the Christian lifestyle

  865. that we live

  866. in terms of salt and light.

  867. We do good works

  868. in the name of Jesus.

  869. We are the salt of the earth.

  870. We're the light of the world.

  871. Okay.

  872. He sends us His salt and light,

  873. but He also sends us

  874. as witnesses.

  875. Okay.

  876. You'll be my witnesses,

  877. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,

  878. the ends of the earth.

  879. A witness has to talk, right?

  880. If you're called into court

  881. as a witness for something

  882. and you just sit there,

  883. smile at people,

  884. be really nice to people,

  885. I don't think that's going to work, right?

  886. You have to say something

  887. if you're a witness.

  888. My American friends,

  889. they love this quote

  890. that's attributed

  891. to St. Francis of Assisi

  892. who supposedly said,

  893. preach the gospel at all times.

  894. When necessary, use words.

  895. Very clever quote, right?

  896. And Americans,

  897. my American friends

  898. really like that

  899. because that kind of

  900. gets them off the hook

  901. of actually saying something.

  902. They feel like just

  903. their good works

  904. and their love

  905. and this and that,

  906. that's a sufficient witness.

  907. The problem with that

  908. is there's absolutely no proof

  909. that the good saint

  910. ever said that

  911. and it's entirely inconsistent

  912. with his life as well.

  913. Whatever you think

  914. about Francis of Assisi,

  915. he ended his life in Egypt

  916. trying to share the gospel

  917. with Muslims down there.

  918. Okay.

  919. So it's not consistent

  920. with his life

  921. or anything he did

  922. and it's not biblical either.

  923. We do need to live

  924. good and honorable lives

  925. among non-believers

  926. and show them the truth

  927. through our good works.

  928. We also need to be witnesses.

  929. He sends in the power

  930. of the Holy Spirit.

  931. He doesn't send us alone.

  932. Behold, I'm with you always

  933. even to the end of the age.

  934. You'll receive power

  935. when the Holy Spirit

  936. comes upon you.

  937. He sends,

  938. but he goes with his people.

  939. Finally, he sends us

  940. his sheep among wolves.

  941. And I don't think

  942. that needs much definition.

  943. Sheep among wolves

  944. is not in a particularly

  945. secure or safe position,

  946. but still he sends.

  947. And it's striking to me

  948. to think that

  949. he sends us

  950. his sheep among wolves

  951. knowing that we're sheep

  952. and knowing that we're

  953. going to wolves.

  954. But still he sends.

  955. How do the Father

  956. and Jesus not send?

  957. We could come up

  958. with a big list of these.

  959. But they don't send us

  960. with promises of comfort,

  961. security, peace,

  962. and easy results.

  963. It's quite the opposite.

  964. He says,

  965. you'll be sheep among wolves.

  966. He said,

  967. you'll be hated by all men

  968. for my sake.

  969. And that's true

  970. in Ireland

  971. or in the ends of the earth.

  972. Just a few comments

  973. about the role

  974. of the church as well.

  975. What is the role

  976. of a local church

  977. in this mission sending?

  978. First of all,

  979. the church needs

  980. to mobilize.

  981. Okay?

  982. The church needs

  983. to mobilize

  984. her people.

  985. Yeah.

  986. Need to mobilize

  987. the whole church

  988. for outreach,

  989. especially local outreach

  990. in a place like Ireland

  991. where you have

  992. only a very small

  993. percentage of the population

  994. being Bible-believing Christians.

  995. I think that's still

  996. got to be a very

  997. high priority

  998. for a church

  999. here in Ireland.

  1000. Yeah.

  1001. Mobilize for local

  1002. ministry and outreach.

  1003. In a sense,

  1004. you're still living

  1005. in the midst

1006. of a mission field here.

  1007. It's an obvious

  1008. priority for the church.

  1009. All are sent,

1010. but not all are sent

  1011. to the ends

  1012. of the earth.

  1013. If the whole church

  1014. shows up in Africa

  1015. someday and says,

  1016. here we are,

  1017. I expect that will

  1018. create some problems

  1019. for us,

1020. so please don't do that.

1021. But at the same time,

  1022. everybody can be involved

  1023. in local outreach

  1024. and a few people

  1025. to go to Judea,

  1026. Samaria,

1027. the ends of the earth.

1028. The ends of the earth

  1029. is not for everybody.

  1030. And in AIM,

  1031. we want some

  1032. of your best people.

  1033. Think about Saul

  1034. and Barnabas

  1035. sent out from

  1036. the church of Antioch.

  1037. There were five leaders

  1038. listed there

  1039. among whom were

  1040. Saul and Barnabas.

  1041. and the Holy Spirit

  1042. said,

  1043. take these two.

  1044. Maybe your best

  1045. two guys

  1046. set them apart

  1047. for the work

  1048. I've called you to.

  1049. Very difficult

  1050. for small local churches

  1051. to do that.

  1052. But I believe

  1053. that's what the Lord

  1054. would have.

1055. The ends of the earth

  1056. is not for everybody.

  1057. Church needs to define

  1058. what mission is.

  1059. the Lord

  1060. has a particular call

  1061. for different churches.

  1062. Okay?

  1063. And the church

  1064. needs to think

  1065. in advance

  1066. what is the Lord

  1067. calling us to do

  1068. and what are the

  1069. kinds of people

  1070. we want to send

  1071. and where do we

1072. want to send them to?

  1073. Okay?

1074. It's good for the church

  1075. to identify

  1076. those priorities

  1077. in advance.

  1078. Otherwise,

  1079. when someone comes

  1080. and says,

  1081. I feel like God's

  1082. calling me to do

  1083. this or this,

  1084. then if the church

  1085. hasn't defined

  1086. those things in advance,

1087. then they're going to be

  1088. in a difficult situation.

  1089. Okay?

  1090. If the church

  1091. has defined,

  1092. for instance,

  1093. that we believe

  1094. that the kind of

  1095. missionaries

  1096. we want to send

  1097. are to

  1098. unreached people groups,

  1099. Muslim people groups,

  1100. people in places

1101. where there is no gospel,

  1102. then when someone

  1103. comes along

  1104. and says that,

  1105. I feel like I need

  1106. to be a missionary

  1107. to Australia

1108. to save the coral reefs

  1109. of Australia,

  1110. then the church

  1111. can say,

  1112. that's a nice thing.

  1113. And go ahead,

  1114. bless you,

  1115. but we're not

  1116. going to get involved

  1117. with that.

  1118. You know,

  1119. I said exactly

  1120. those words

  1121. in our church

  1122. in Bristol,

1123. and one of the elders

  1124. came up to me

  1125. afterwards,

  1126. and he said,

  1127. there is someone

  1128. in our church

  1129. whose idea of mission

  1130. is close enough

  1131. to what you said

  1132. that they will think

1133. that we put you up

  1134. to saying that.

  1135. It's like,

  1136. really?

  1137. But,

  1138. yeah,

  1139. I mean,

  1140. people have different

  1141. notions about mission.

1142. So then I changed it,

  1143. and I started talking

  1144. about save the koalas

  1145. of Australia

  1146. or something like that,

  1147. but I don't know,

  1148. koalas are cute.

  1149. Maybe someone

1150. would want to do that.

  1151. It defined in advance

  1152. what mission is.

  1153. Church needs to pray,

  1154. and I believed,

  1155. or Jesus told us,

  1156. pray to the Lord

  1157. of harvest

  1158. to send workers

  1159. into his harvest field.

  1160. I think the church

1161. needs to ask the Lord,

  1162. Lord,

  1163. send workers

  1164. to your harvest field,

  1165. send Irish people

  1166. into the harvest field,

  1167. and send people

  1168. from this church.

  1169. I think that's a prayer

  1170. that tremendously

  1171. honors the Lord,

1172. and I believe the Lord

  1173. will answer that prayer.

  1174. Lord,

  1175. send people

  1176. from this church,

  1177. from this community

  1178. of churches,

  1179. and Lord,

  1180. send some of our

  1181. best people.

  1182. That's a scary prayer,

  1183. maybe.

  1184. I think it's a prayer

  1185. that honors the Lord,

  1186. and he's likely

  1187. to answer.

  1188. And then the church

  1189. needs to listen

  1190. to the Lord,

  1191. and under the guidance

  1192. of the Holy Spirit,

  1193. identify those people

  1194. who have that call

  1195. of the Lord

  1196. in their lives,

  1197. just like the church

1198. in Acts was able to do.

  1199. Church needs to prepare

  1200. and train missionaries.

  1201. Okay.

  1202. We have all kinds,

  1203. there's all kinds

  1204. of specialized

  1205. missionary training programs

1206. we can refer you to,

  1207. and that's a good thing.

1208. But the most important skills

  1209. of mission

  1210. are disciple making,

  1211. following Christ

  1212. as a disciple

  1213. and making other disciples,

  1214. serving,

  1215. bringing the gospel

1216. to people outside the church,

1217. learning the Word of God,

  1218. learning to teach

  1219. the Word of God,

  1220. learning to pray.

  1221. Those are all things

1222. that can and should be taught

1223. right here in this church.

1224. You don't have to send someone

  1225. to a specialized

  1226. missionary training program

1227. to learn those kind of things.

1228. And those are the kind of people

1229. who have learned those things

  1230. in their local churches,

  1231. who've learned to serve

  1232. in their local churches,

  1233. who've learned to share

  1234. the gospel out

  1235. in their own community.

1236. Those are the kind of people

1237. that we want to send

  1238. to Africa.

  1239. Last thing,

1240. church needs to build up

  1241. the base.

  1242. Acts 20, 28,

1243. be on guard for yourselves

  1244. and all the flock.

  1245. Okay.

  1246. Good statement

  1247. that Paul makes

  1248. to the Ephesian elders.

  1249. Yeah, guard the flock.

  1250. Savage wolves are coming.

  1251. They'll ravage the flock.

  1252. But he says,

  1253. first be on guard

  1254. for yourselves.

1255. Before we can shepherd others,

1256. we need to shepherd ourselves.

1257. And before we can effectively

  1258. send missionaries,

1259. we need to build up,

  1260. or so I shouldn't say before,

1261. but as we think about

  1262. sending missionaries,

  1263. we need to watch

  1264. our own churches.

  1265. In particular,

  1266. I think there's two things

1267. that churches need to do.

  1268. And especially

  1269. in this modern era

  1270. when the truth

  1271. is facing challenges

  1272. from every side.

  1273. The church needs,

  1274. first of all,

  1275. to maintain true doctrine.

  1276. And again,

  1277. I'm saying obvious things

  1278. to you.

  1279. But I think there's three things,

  1280. especially,

1281. as far as missions is concerned,

1282. the church needs to hold on to

  1283. with all its might.

  1284. One is the authority

1285. of the Word of God.

1286. The second is the eternal destiny,

  1287. whether saved or lost,

1288. of every man and woman.

  1289. And the third is

  1290. the uniqueness of salvation

  1291. through Jesus Christ.

1292. Authority of the Word of God,

  1293. eternal destiny

1294. of every man and woman,

  1295. uniqueness of salvation

  1296. in Jesus Christ.

1297. If you lose any one

  1298. of those things,

1299. then why would anyone bother

  1300. being a missionary?

1301. If we lose the authority

1302. of the Word of God,

  1303. if we stop believing

1304. that every man and woman

1305. is either going to go

  1306. to heaven or hell,

1307. and that the only way

  1308. to go to heaven

  1309. is through Jesus Christ,

  1310. if we stop believing

1311. any one of those three things,

1312. then why are we going

  1313. to do mission?

1314. And why are we even

  1315. going to reach out

  1316. to our neighbors?

  1317. Why even bother?

1318. Church needs to hold on

  1319. to those things

  1320. with all her might.

1321. And then the last thing

  1322. is just promoting evangelism

1323. here in your own community.

  1324. Don't make any distinction

  1325. between local outreach

  1326. and international

  1327. or global outreach.

  1328. A church that has a heart

  1329. for reaching out

  1330. to its neighbors

1331. will also have a heart

  1332. to send its people

  1333. to North Africa,

  1334. bring the gospel

  1335. to those people.

  1336. A church that has a heart

  1337. for North Africa,

  1338. by God's grace,

  1339. will have a heart

  1340. for reaching out

  1341. to local people.

  1342. So in promoting

  1343. local outreach,

  1344. church is promoting

  1345. mission as well.

  1346. Local church plays

  1347. a crucial role

1348. in the kingdom of God.

  1349. You are God's

  1350. chosen instrument.

  1351. Even a little bitty

  1352. church like you.

  1353. Sorry, you might think,

  1354. who's this American guy

  1355. telling us we're

  1356. a little bitty church?

  1357. But God's grace,

  1358. you're here.

  1359. It's wonderful.

  1360. You're God's chosen

  1361. instrument to establish

  1362. the kingdom

  1363. here in this country

  1364. and abroad.

  1365. What a responsibility.

  1366. What an honor

1367. it is for the church.

  1368. What a blessing

  1369. for the church

  1370. and what rewards

  1371. God will give

  1372. to the church

  1373. that's faithful in this.

  1374. Amen.

  1375. You might say,

  1376. well, do we have

  1377. to do this?

  1378. No.

  1379. You don't have

  1380. to do it.

  1381. You don't have

  1382. to send anybody.

  1383. Your salvation

  1384. doesn't depend on it.

  1385. You don't have

  1386. to do it.

  1387. But I read

  1388. something written

  1389. by a man named

  1390. Robertson McQuilkin

  1391. a few years ago.

  1392. He was a seminary

  1393. professor,

1394. or he was the head

  1395. of a seminary

  1396. in the United States.

  1397. And his wife

  1398. was ill

  1399. with advanced

  1400. Alzheimer's disease

  1401. and kept getting

  1402. worse and worse

  1403. and finally he realized

1404. he was going to need

  1405. just to step down

  1406. from his position

  1407. and take care

  1408. of his wife.

  1409. So he did.

  1410. And he took care

1411. of her for five years.

  1412. And when she died,

  1413. then he came back

  1414. to leading the seminary.

  1415. But he wrote

  1416. a little short pamphlet

  1417. called Living by Vows

  1418. and talked about

  1419. the journey

  1420. that he went

  1421. through in caring

  1422. for his wife,

  1423. stepping down

  1424. from his position

  1425. in order to care

  1426. for his wife.

  1427. And he said this,

1428. he said that a lot

1429. of people come to me

  1430. and they say,

  1431. oh, I'm so sorry

  1432. that you have

  1433. to do this.

  1434. McQuilkin always said,

  1435. he said,

  1436. I don't have to.

  1437. I get to.

  1438. I get to.

  1439. And it's the same

  1440. for the church.

  1441. We don't have

  1442. to do this.

  1443. You really don't.

1444. But we get to do it.

  1445. Sending is a privilege

  1446. the Lord gives

  1447. to a local church.

  1448. Let's pray.

  1449. Thank you, Father,

  1450. for your goodness.

1451. Thank you for the privilege

1452. you give to your church.

1453. Thank you for this great plan

  1454. that you have accomplished

  1455. in building your church.

  1456. Jesus Christ

  1457. built this church,

  1458. each local manifestation

  1459. of it.

  1460. Thank you for these

  1461. brothers and sisters

  1462. that are here.

1463. Thank you for your church

1464. in this area of Ireland.

  1465. We praise you, Lord.

  1466. You are building

  1467. your church here.

1468. And I pray for the

  1469. brothers and sisters here

  1470. that you would

  1471. encourage them.

  1472. You would encourage them

1473. that you would send them

  1474. out into the community

  1475. and into other communities

  1476. cross-culturally

  1477. here in Ireland

  1478. and you would send

1479. a few of these people

1480. to the ends of the earth.

  1481. Lord, that you would

1482. identify who those people are.

  1483. We know you have

  1484. your people everywhere.

  1485. Please make that clear

1486. to the church leaders here.

  1487. And let us all,

  1488. wherever we are,

  1489. embrace this privilege

  1490. of sending.

  1491. We're thankful

  1492. for Jesus Christ.

  1493. We're thankful

  1494. that he sends us.

  1495. We're thankful

  1496. for the peace

1497. that he speaks to us.

  1498. We're thankful

  1499. for the grace

  1500. that you give us

  1501. in Jesus Christ.

1502. And we pray in his name.

  1503. Amen.

  1504. Amen.

  1505. Amen.

  1506. Amen.

  1507. Amen.

  1508. Amen.

  1509. Amen.

  1510. Amen.

  1511. Amen.

  1512. Amen.

  1513. Amen.

  1514. Amen.

  1515. Amen.

  1516. Amen.

  1517. Amen.

  1518. Amen.
