  1. Come on, hurry up, hurry up, hurry up.

  2. Okay, well, let's pray.

  3. Father, thank you again for life.

  4. Thank you for your word.

  5. We know that your word brings life, speaks life, sustains life.

  6. And so we pray that your word would speak into our hearts today

  7. so that we line up with your values and your truth,

  8. that we do not live by our own decisions or our own choice,

  9. but help us to live according to your ways,

  10. for that is best for us.

  11. It brings glory to you,

  12. and it is good for the world in which we live.

  13. So help us, we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. Well, on Sunday, the 12th of November,

  16. just a few months ago,

  17. an earthquake measuring 7.3 struck Halabja in Iraq.

  18. As the building shook and fell,

  19. hundreds died and thousands were injured.

  20. Survival was unimaginable.

  21. The following date,

  22. eight more earthquakes struck,

  23. making rescue efforts difficult and dangerous.

  24. The chance of finding anybody alive was near to impossible.

  25. But yet, the community kept on digging.

  26. Two and a half days later,

  27. a baby was pulled from the rubble without any serious injury.

  28. Why would anyone risk searching when it is dangerously high

  29. and the chances of finding anyone alive extremely low?

  30. Because life matters.

  31. On the 19th of November, 2016,

  32. so just over a year ago,

  33. medical staff in a children's hospital in Aleppo, Syria,

  34. were going about their normal routine.

  35. Without warning, a bomb was dropped onto the hospital,

  36. and one journalist captures the scene.

  37. Nurses and other medical staff

  38. were seen scrambling through the blackness,

  39. trying to rush the patients out of the badly damaged hospital

  40. as children cried out for help.

  41. In another room,

  42. nurses grabbed babies from damaged incubators,

  43. with one staff member using a cloth

  44. to protect a visibly undernourished child,

  45. before trying to console a weeping colleague

  46. who was also carrying a newborn.

  47. The nurses later moved the babies to another room,

  48. putting them on the floor next to each other

  49. and covering them with blankets.

  50. At least one of the infants

  51. still had medical tubes attached.

  52. Staff told Al Jazeera,

  53. that's the news agency,

  54. that all of the babies survived the attack.

  55. Why is it that we can be so outraged

  56. and full of anger

  57. when a bomb falls from a plane

  58. onto a children's hospital?

  59. Because life matters.

  60. When we see life in danger,

  61. we reach out to rescue and protect.

  62. When we see life cut short,

  63. we are sad,

  64. we're angry.

  65. You see,

  66. whoever we are,

  67. whatever our background,

  68. religious or non-religious,

  69. we have this,

  70. what is almost like an in-built conviction

  71. that life matters,

  72. that life is precious.

  73. We want to protect life,

  74. save life,

  75. keep life.

  76. So why is there a demand in this country

  77. to end life?

  78. How is it that people want to repeal the Eighth Amendment

  79. and open the door to what will be abortion on demand?

  80. Why is it that we celebrate the heroes

  81. who risk their lives to save a child from an earthquake,

  82. but yet ridicule and shame those

  83. who want to keep our constitutional laws

  84. that protect life?

  85. Why is it that we shout and get angry

  86. outside the door to protect babies and toddlers

  87. who are in danger in war situations,

  88. but yet march and protest

  89. when we can't end the life of a baby

  90. before they get out of the womb?

  91. It seems we are in conflict with ourselves.

  92. Simon Coveney,

  93. our Tornishta,

  94. if I can understand correctly,

  95. is certainly a man in conflict.

  96. He doesn't want abortion on demand,

  97. but yet he does want to remove the Eighth Amendment.

  98. On the one hand,

  99. life matters,

  100. but then the laws that protect life

  101. are to be repealed.

  102. Why is that?

  103. Why that contradiction?

  104. Well, those who seek to repeal the Eighth

  105. will say it's different.

  106. They say that what's in the womb

  107. is different to what's outside the womb.

  108. But that's not true.

  109. Medical science is crystal clear

  110. that life begins at conception.

  111. The moment the sperm from the father

  112. meets the egg of the mother,

  113. life starts.

  114. All the evidence points to the fact

  115. that life begins when fertilisation takes place.

  116. Even those who support abortion believe this.

  117. Anne Faroudi,

  118. who is the chief executive

  119. of the largest independent abortion business

  120. in the UK,

  121. said this.

  122. Here's the quote.

  123. We can accept that the embryo

  124. is a living thing

  125. in the fact that it has a beating heart,

  126. that it has its own genetic system within it.

  127. It's clearly human in the sense

  128. that it's not a gerbil.

  129. And we can recognise that it is human life.

  130. What's in the mother's womb,

  131. what's in the mother's womb,

  132. a conception is not just an embryo

  133. or a living thing.

  134. They are a human life.

  135. In fact, those who advocate and perform abortions

  136. admit that when an abortion takes place,

  137. they are in fact killing a life.

  138. Faye Wattleton,

  139. former president of Planned Parenthood,

  140. the largest abortion clinic in the US,

  141. is clear about this.

  142. Here's what she said.

  143. I think we have deluded ourselves

  144. into believing that people don't know

  145. that abortion is killing.

  146. Remember, this is somebody who supports it.

  147. So any pretense that abortion is not killing

  148. is a signal of our ambivalence,

  149. a signal that we cannot say,

  150. yes, it kills a fetus.

  151. I would want to say a child.

  152. Of course, people will still argue

  153. that there's a difference

  154. between life in the womb

  155. and life outside of the womb.

  156. They will argue that life in the womb is,

  157. they'll term it in this way,

  158. a human being,

  159. but not a human person.

  160. They are denied the dignity

  161. of their personhood.

  162. In other words,

  163. killing the life of a human being is okay,

  164. but it's not okay to kill a human person.

  165. Now, I don't know about you,

  166. but I can't understand what the difference is.

  167. Surely a human being is a human person.

  168. Well, for those who are on the side of abortion,

  169. they make the distinction in four ways.

  170. They talk about size.

  171. So the life in the womb is different in size

  172. to life outside the womb.

  173. This is how they try to make the difference.

  174. Second, they talk about level of development.

  175. That the life in the womb is less developed

  176. than the life outside of the womb.

  177. Or third, environment.

  178. The life in the womb is living

  179. in a different kind of environment,

  180. the environment of the mother,

  181. than life outside of the womb.

  182. And they talk about degree of dependence.

  183. So the life in the womb has a greater dependence

  184. than life outside the womb.

  185. Now, to some extent, that is all true.

  186. But how does size,

  187. level of development,

  188. environment, degree of dependence

  189. determine whether a person lives or dies?

  190. Each of these four categories

  191. continually changes from conception to death.

  192. What's the difference in terms of,

  193. well, a baby in the womb

  194. is different in size to a toddler,

  195. but a toddler is different in size to a teenager,

  196. and a teenager is different in size to an adult.

  197. It's the same with dependence.

  198. Of course, a child within the womb

  199. is dependent on their mother,

  200. but a newborn is equally dependent.

  201. And as we get older,

  202. we become dependent again.

  203. The Christian apologist Alan Shellman

  204. puts it like this,

  205. Today, the unborn are victims of discrimination.

  206. They are a class of human beings

  207. that are disqualified from being valuable

  208. based on arbitrary characteristics,

  209. their size, level of development,

  210. environment,

  211. and degree of dependency.

  212. None of these categories

  213. determines the value or life

  214. or worth of a life.

  215. A life is precious and valuable

  216. because they are a life.

  217. Alan Shellman, again.

  218. He says the pro-life position,

  219. on the other hand,

  220. is an inclusive view.

  221. It says,

  222. No human being,

  223. regardless of size,

  224. skin colour,

  225. level of development,

  226. race, gender,

  227. or place of residence,

  228. should be excluded

  229. from the community of human persons.

  230. This view of humanity

  231. is inclusive

  232. and wide open to all,

  233. especially to those

  234. who are small,

  235. vulnerable,

  236. and defenceless.

  237. We must be clear

  238. that those who are seeking

  239. the repeal of the Eighth Amendment

  240. is the intentional

  241. intervention

  242. to terminate the life

  243. of an unborn child.

  244. Any other view or opinion

  245. is a lie

  246. or an illusion.

  247. It's rejecting the facts of science

  248. and it's denying

  249. the beauty of life itself.

  250. It is,

  251. as one author put it,

  252. the extermination

  253. of the powerless

  254. by the powerful.

  255. The extermination

  256. of the powerless

  257. by the powerful.

  258. So why is life

  259. so precious?

  260. Why should we value

  261. the life

  262. of the unborn?

  263. Well, three things

  264. and then we're going

  265. to look at three responses.

  266. So three reasons

  267. why life is precious

  268. and then three responses.

  269. So here's the first one.

  270. First, all life

  271. is created by God.

  272. Let's go to Genesis 1.

  273. If you've got your Bibles there,

  274. please turn to Genesis 1

  275. right at the very beginning.

  276. Genesis 1.

  277. When God created the world,

  278. that's how Genesis opens.

  279. God formed it

  280. with mountains

  281. and rivers

  282. and seas

  283. and then God

  284. filled

  285. what he had formed

  286. with animals

  287. and plants

  288. and stars

  289. and it was all good

  290. and beautiful.

  291. But when God came

  292. to making mankind,

  293. men and women,

  294. it was very, very different.

  295. Look at chapter 1,

  296. verse 26.

  297. Then God said,

  298. this is coming

  299. to the conclusion

  300. of creation,

  301. God said,

  302. let us make mankind

  303. in our image,

  304. in our likeness.

  305. So God didn't make animals

  306. or plants

  307. or fish

  308. in his image.

  309. They are not like God.

  310. But when God created people,

  311. he made them uniquely different

  312. to the rest of all creation.

  313. Because we are made

  314. in God's image,

  315. we're different

  316. to the rest of it.

  317. We can relate to God.

  318. We can represent him.

  319. We can reflect him.

  320. We are not animals

  321. that can be put down

  322. at will

  323. or rodents

  324. that are exterminated

  325. because they're spreading disease.

  326. We are created

  327. in the image of God

  328. in his likeness.

  329. We are uniquely different

  330. to the rest of creation.

  331. So first,

  332. we are unique

  333. image bearers.

  334. Second,

  335. we're very good.

  336. When God finished

  337. his creation,

  338. the forming

  339. of the universe

  340. and the filling

  341. of all that

  342. he had formed,

  343. he keeps saying

  344. it's repeated

  345. time after time.

  346. It was good.

  347. It was good.

  348. It was good.

  349. But after God

  350. had made mankind,

  351. chapter 1,

  352. verse 31,

  353. God saw all

  354. that he made

  355. and it was

  356. very good.

  357. It was very good.

  358. The creation

  359. of people

  360. made in God's image

  361. is not just good

  362. like the rest

  363. of creation,

  364. but it is

  365. very good.

  366. Because what God

  367. creates in

  368. human beings

  369. made in his image

  370. are valuable

  371. and precious

  372. and beautiful.

  373. You show a

  374. scan of a

  375. baby

  376. to anyone

  377. and the

  378. immediate

  379. response is

  380. wow!

  381. Isn't that

  382. amazing?

  383. They begin

  384. to ask

  385. questions,

  386. no matter

  387. of the size

  388. of that little

  389. child.

  390. Do you know

  391. if it's a boy

  392. or a girl?

  393. Everyone

  394. recognizes

  395. the incredible

  396. beauty,

  397. the little

  398. tiny movements,

  399. the distinctive

  400. shape.

  401. A tiny heart

  402. no bigger

  403. than a poppy

  404. seed

  405. begins

  406. to beat.

  407. People

  408. made in

  409. God's image

  410. are very

  411. good.

  412. So life

  413. is created

  414. by God.

  415. Second,

  416. life

  417. is a blessing

  418. from God.

  419. Many

  420. people

  421. view children

  422. as a

  423. curse,

  424. not a

  425. blessing.

  426. So sometimes

  427. when a mother

  428. gets pregnant

  429. they may

  430. say it's

  431. an unwanted

  432. pregnancy.

  433. Others

  434. will say

  435. that this

  436. new life

  437. within them

  438. is interfering

  439. with their

  440. lifestyle

  441. choice.

  442. The child

  443. that they

  444. bear

  445. has become

  446. a curse.

  447. It must

  448. be removed,

  449. it must be

  450. taken away.

  451. But God's

  452. perspective is

  453. so different.

  454. Children

  455. are a

  456. blessing.

  457. To have

  458. children

  459. is a

  460. blessing.

  461. Genesis

    Genesis 49:25

  462. 49

  463. verse 25

  464. speaks of

  465. children as

  466. blessings of

  467. the breast

  468. in the

  469. womb.

  470. Or

  471. Psalm

  472. 127

  473. here's the

  474. quote on

  475. the screen.

  476. 127

  477. verses 3

  478. to 5

  479. says

  480. children

  481. are a

  482. heritage

  483. from the

  484. Lord.

  485. Offspring

  486. a reward

  487. from him.

  488. Blessed

  489. is the

  490. man who

  491. is full

  492. of them.

  493. Blessed

  494. is the

  495. father

  496. who

  497. has a

  498. great

  499. big

  500. family.

  501. Children

  502. are a

  503. blessing

  504. not a

  505. curse.

  506. They are

  507. a reward

  508. not a

  509. disgrace.

  510. They are

  511. a joy

  512. not a

  513. burden.

  514. You see

  515. the main

  516. reason and

  517. you might

  518. want to

  519. come back

  520. to me on

  521. this afterwards

  522. but I

  523. think the

  524. main reason

  525. for abortion

  526. has nothing

  527. to do

  528. with rights.

  529. It's all

  530. about personal

  531. choice.

  532. That my

  533. life is

  534. more important

  535. than another

  536. life.

  537. I don't

  538. want this

  539. new life

  540. interfering

  541. or upsetting

  542. my life.

  543. So people

  544. not only

  545. choose not

  546. to have

  547. children but

  548. they choose

  549. to end

  550. their child's

  551. life before

  552. they're born.

  553. You see

  554. children are

  555. only perceived

  556. to be an

  557. inconvenience

  558. because they

  559. challenge our

  560. self-centeredness.

  561. We don't

  562. want to give

  563. up our

  564. independence.

  565. Having

  566. children means

  567. I'm not

  568. going to be

  569. free to

  570. do what

  571. I want.

  572. Being

  573. pregnant means

  574. I no longer

  575. am able to

  576. pursue my

  577. dreams.

  578. Christopher

  579. Ash

  580. an author

  581. puts it

  582. like this.

  583. This is a

  584. question he

  585. says of

  586. lining up

  587. our values

  588. with God's

  589. values.

  590. Do we

  591. agree with

  592. the Bible

  593. and face

  594. children with

  595. arms open

  596. in gratitude

  597. for the

  598. blessing of

  599. God?

  600. Or do we

  601. turn our

  602. face away

  603. from children

  604. and count

  605. as curse

  606. what God

  607. calls a

  608. blessing?

  609. Choosing to

  610. have children

  611. is a right

  612. choice.

  613. it is a

  614. blessing.

  615. So first

  616. life is

  617. created by

  618. God.

  619. Life is a

  620. blessing from

  621. God.

  622. And life

  623. finds purpose

  624. in God.

  625. You see

  626. medical science

  627. is great

  628. in that it

  629. can tell us

  630. that life

  631. begins at

  632. conception.

  633. We can

  634. see on a

  635. screen a

  636. little tiny

  637. heart beating.

  638. We can

  639. see the

  640. fingerprints.

  641. We can

  642. see the

  643. baby develop.

  644. science can't

  645. tell us the

  646. meaning or

  647. the purpose

  648. for life.

  649. We can

  650. only find the

  651. purpose for

  652. life in

  653. God.

  654. Look again at

  655. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 1:28

  656. 1 verse 28.

  657. verse 28.

  658. So after the

  659. creation of

  660. the first man

  661. and woman,

  662. verse 28 says

  663. God blessed

  664. them and

  665. said to

  666. them,

  667. be fruitful

  668. and increase

  669. in number.

  670. The very,

  671. very first

  672. command that

  673. God gives

  674. to the first

  675. man and

  676. woman,

  677. and we get

  678. the second

  679. account or a

  680. fuller account

  681. in Genesis 2

  682. where Adam

  683. and Eve

  684. are brought

  685. together in

  686. marriage.

  687. But the

  688. first command

  689. that he

  690. makes to

  691. this first

  692. married couple

  693. is go and

  694. make babies,

  695. have children.

  696. And here's

  697. the purpose.

  698. When God

  699. created the

  700. first man,

  701. Adam,

  702. he placed

  703. him in the

  704. garden to

  705. love God

  706. and serve

  707. God, to

  708. work for

  709. him and

  710. live for

  711. him.

  712. So look at

  713. chapter 2

  714. verse 15.

  715. The Lord

  716. God took

  717. the man

  718. and put

  719. him in

  720. the garden

  721. of Eden

  722. to work

  723. it and

  724. to take

  725. care of

  726. it.

  727. He's

  728. reflecting

  729. the very

  730. nature of

  731. God.

  732. He's

  733. being what

  734. God has

  735. called him

  736. to be.

  737. Again,

  738. Christopher

  739. Ash,

  740. in his

  741. book,

  742. Married

  743. for God,

  744. puts it

  745. like this.

  746. You can

  747. follow the

  748. quote on

  749. the screen.

  750. The job

  751. of caring

  752. for the

  753. garden was

  754. too big

  755. for Adam,

  756. the gardener,

  757. to do on

  758. his own,

  759. and so

  760. Eve is

  761. given to

  762. work alongside

  763. him as

  764. his helper.

  765. Alongside

  766. her contribution

  767. to work

  768. as an equal

  769. human being

  770. alongside Adam,

  771. it is her

  772. unique privilege

  773. to bear and

  774. nurture children

  775. and so

  776. increase the

  777. gardening

  778. team.

  779. Together,

  780. Adam and

  781. Eve are to

  782. serve God,

  783. but still

  784. it's like

  785. the task

  786. is too

  787. big on

  788. their own.

  789. It's too

  790. much for

  791. them.

  792. The team

  793. has got

  794. to increase

  795. and that's

  796. why God

  797. gives them

  798. the command

  799. and says,

  800. go and

  801. be fruitful.

  802. That's why

  803. God gives

  804. them the

  805. blessing of

  806. children.

  807. They are

  808. to have

  809. more children

  810. so that

  811. the children

  812. can join

  813. the gardening

  814. team,

  815. as it were.

  816. Of course,

  817. that's not

  818. to say that

  819. we're all

  820. to be in

  821. the horticultural

  822. club or

  823. to become

  824. farmers.

  825. It's kind

  826. of giving

  827. an imagery,

  828. a picture,

  829. it's symbolism

  830. of all that

  831. God has

  832. called us

  833. to be,

  834. that God's

  835. purpose for

  836. life for

  837. human beings,

  838. for people

  839. like us,

  840. is that we

  841. too should

  842. love him,

  843. that we

  844. too were

  845. created to

  846. serve him,

  847. to live

  848. for him.

  849. You see,

  850. God is

  851. seeking to

  852. build a

  853. worldwide

  854. family that

  855. crosses

  856. boundaries

  857. and cultures

  858. and religions

  859. and races

  860. and languages.

  861. He is

  862. calling

  863. together a

  864. worldwide

  865. family who

  866. will love

  867. him,

  868. who will

  869. serve him

  870. and make

  871. him the

  872. centre of

  873. their lives

  874. and their

  875. world.

  876. You see,

  877. life finds

  878. its purpose

  879. and meaning

  880. in God.

  881. We know

  882. from their

  883. creation story

  884. that although

  885. God gave

  886. these commands,

  887. life didn't

  888. go as

  889. God had

  890. intended.

  891. Man

  892. rebelled.

  893. Adam rebelled

  894. against God

  895. and said,

  896. God, I

  897. don't want

  898. you being

  899. God,

  900. I want

  901. to be

  902. God,

  903. I want

  904. to make

  905. choices

  906. and decisions

  907. for myself.

  908. And we

  909. have followed

  910. in Adam's

  911. path.

  912. We too

  913. have been

  914. born with

  915. sin,

  916. we're

  917. broken,

  918. we're

  919. people who

  920. do exactly

  921. the same.

  922. We want

  923. to play

  924. God.

  925. We want

  926. to make

  927. the rules

  928. for life

  929. and what

  930. I can do

  931. with my

  932. life.

  933. We don't

  934. want God

  935. telling us

  936. how we

  937. should live,

  938. I want

  939. to make

  940. my

  941. choices.

  942. that's

  943. why we

  944. need to

  945. be born

  946. again.

  947. That's

  948. why we

  949. all need

  950. this new

  951. life.

  952. Remember

  953. what we

  954. talked about

  955. at the

  956. very beginning

  957. this morning?

  958. Turn with

  959. me please

  960. to John's

  961. Gospel

  962. chapter 1

  963. where we

  964. started this

  965. morning.

  966. John's

  967. Gospel

  968. chapter 1

  969. verse 11

  970. and verse

  971. 12.

  972. You see

  973. the world

  974. is the

  975. way that

  976. it is

  977. because we

  978. have pushed

  979. God out

  980. and put

  981. ourselves

  982. in place

  983. of God.

  984. That's

  985. why our

  986. country

  987. is wanting

  988. to repeal

  989. the eighth

  990. and make

  991. choices and

  992. decisions for

  993. themselves and

  994. ignore what

  995. God says

  996. because we

  997. want to be

  998. God.

  999. And the

  1000. only way

  1001. that that's

  1002. truly ever

  1003. going to

  1004. change

  1005. is when

  1006. people are

  1007. born again

  1008. into God's

  1009. family when

  1010. they begin

  1011. to see the

  1012. world from

  1013. God's

  1014. perspective.

  1015. And they

  1016. need to

  1017. change,

  1018. that is they

  1019. need to

  1020. humble

  1021. themselves

  1022. before God

  1023. and repent

  1024. and turn

  1025. to him.

  1026. Each one

  1027. of us,

  1028. myself,

  1029. yourself,

  1030. all of us

  1031. need to.

  1032. So look at

  1033. John chapter

    John 1:11

  1034. 1 verse

  1035. 11.

  1036. This is

  1037. talking about

  1038. Jesus who

  1039. came,

  1040. who was

  1041. himself born

  1042. into this

  1043. world through

  1044. his mother

  1045. Mary.

  1046. John chapter

    John 1:11

  1047. 1 verse

  1048. 11.

  1049. He came to

  1050. that which

  1051. was his

  1052. own, to

  1053. his own

  1054. people, but

  1055. his own

  1056. people didn't

  1057. receive him.

  1058. But yet to

  1059. all who did

  1060. receive him,

  1061. to all those

  1062. who accepted

  1063. him, who

  1064. believed in

  1065. him, who

  1066. entrusted

  1067. their life

  1068. to him,

  1069. he gave

  1070. the right

  1071. to become

  1072. children of

  1073. God.

  1074. Children born

  1075. not of

  1076. natural descent,

  1077. nor of a

  1078. human decision,

  1079. or a

  1080. husband's

  1081. will, but

  1082. born of

  1083. God.

  1084. You see,

  1085. each one of

  1086. us here have

  1087. a story in

  1088. terms of our

  1089. natural birth,

  1090. a decision on

  1091. behalf of our

  1092. parents, that

  1093. we were born

  1094. into this

  1095. world.

  1096. Yes, God

  1097. is sovereign

  1098. over that

  1099. life, but

  1100. this new

  1101. life,

  1102. this new

  1103. life from

  1104. God, where

  1105. we change

  1106. from living

  1107. for ourselves

  1108. and living

  1109. for him,

  1110. that too is

  1111. a supernatural

  1112. work of

  1113. God, not

  1114. something that

  1115. I can decide

  1116. for myself

  1117. or choose

  1118. for myself.

  1119. It's only

  1120. enabled by

  1121. the Holy

  1122. Spirit who

  1123. helps me to

  1124. see that I

  1125. need to turn

  1126. my life around

  1127. and to go

  1128. the way of

  1129. God, to

  1130. believe in

  1131. his Son,

  1132. the Lord

  1133. Jesus Christ,

  1134. that when

  1135. he came,

  1136. he didn't

  1137. come to

  1138. take life,

  1139. but the

  1140. Son who

  1141. came to

  1142. give his

  1143. life for

  1144. all, to

  1145. give his

  1146. life for

  1147. people like

  1148. you and

  1149. me, to

  1150. give his

  1151. life for

  1152. those who

  1153. have had an

  1154. abortion, to

  1155. give his

  1156. life for

  1157. those who

  1158. are wanting

  1159. to repeal

  1160. the AIDS,

  1161. to give his

  1162. life for

  1163. those who

  1164. perform an

  1165. abortion.

  1166. He's

  1167. saying, you

  1168. know what, I

  1169. have come

  1170. into this

  1171. world to

  1172. take the

  1173. blame for

  1174. all the

  1175. wrong things

  1176. that you

  1177. have done,

  1178. so that

  1179. you can be

  1180. forgiven,

  1181. so that

  1182. you can

  1183. have life,

  1184. so that

  1185. you can

  1186. now live

  1187. my way

  1188. and do

  1189. what is

  1190. right and

  1191. good.

  1192. The only

  1193. solution that

  1194. I can think

  1195. of, we

  1196. can have

  1197. all our

  1198. arguments from

  1199. science,

  1200. we can

  1201. have all

  1202. the pictures

  1203. that we

  1204. want, the

  1205. ugliness and

  1206. the brutality

  1207. of some of

  1208. those pictures,

  1209. but the

  1210. only thing

  1211. that's really

  1212. going to

  1213. change the

  1214. human heart

  1215. is the

  1216. good news

  1217. of Jesus

  1218. Christ who

  1219. has come

  1220. to give

  1221. his life

  1222. for us.

  1223. This is

  1224. God's

  1225. purpose for

  1226. each and

  1227. every new

  1228. life,

  1229. that every

  1230. child born

  1231. into this

  1232. world would

  1233. turn to

  1234. the Lord

  1235. Jesus and

  1236. become part

  1237. of his

  1238. worldwide

  1239. family, of

  1240. loving him

  1241. and serving

  1242. him.

  1243. That's why

  1244. we have

  1245. children.

  1246. That's why

  1247. we protect

  1248. life and

  1249. save life and

  1250. treasure life.

  1251. We want

  1252. children born

  1253. into this

  1254. world so

  1255. they can

  1256. enjoy God

  1257. and know

  1258. him and

  1259. love him.

  1260. So three

  1261. reasons why

  1262. we should

  1263. protect and

  1264. value life.

  1265. Life is

  1266. created by

  1267. God, life

  1268. is a

  1269. blessing,

  1270. and life

  1271. finds purpose

  1272. in God.

  1273. Very quickly,

  1274. I know our

  1275. time is

  1276. moving on.

  1277. I just want

  1278. to give

  1279. three responses

  1280. to life.

  1281. Three things.

  1282. First, we

  1283. should celebrate

  1284. life.

  1285. Life is a

  1286. beautiful gift

  1287. from God.

  1288. Children are a

  1289. blessing and a

  1290. reward and a

  1291. joy.

  1292. Yes, parenting

  1293. can be difficult.

  1294. Yes, our

  1295. children may

  1296. struggle through

  1297. life.

  1298. Yes, our

  1299. children may be

  1300. born with a

  1301. disability.

  1302. But all

  1303. life is

  1304. precious and

  1305. valuable, so

  1306. we should

  1307. celebrate the

  1308. gift of

  1309. life.

  1310. Protect

  1311. life.

  1312. I encourage

  1313. us, as

  1314. Anne was

  1315. encouraging us

  1316. to make

  1317. that priority

  1318. for keeping

  1319. the Eighth

  1320. Amendment, to

  1321. speak up for

  1322. the unborn.

  1323. Be a voice

  1324. for those who

  1325. cannot yet

  1326. talk.

  1327. Don't be

  1328. silent on this

  1329. issue.

  1330. you know

  1331. what?

  1332. I think we

  1333. need to do

  1334. more.

  1335. It's not

  1336. just enough to

  1337. say no to

  1338. abortion.

  1339. We need to

  1340. come in grace

  1341. and mercy

  1342. and compassion

  1343. and provide a

  1344. shelter and a

  1345. refuge for those

  1346. who have had an

  1347. abortion, for

  1348. those who are

  1349. struggling and

  1350. find it difficult.

  1351. We need to

  1352. love them.

  1353. We also, and I

  1354. think this is

  1355. true as we

  1356. think into the

  1357. future, that I

  1358. think together

  1359. the church in

  1360. this country, in

  1361. this land in

  1362. which we live, I

  1363. think we will

  1364. need to be

  1365. investing our

  1366. resources, financial

  1367. resources, into

  1368. providing centres of

  1369. care, homes where

  1370. young mums who

  1371. are struggling with

  1372. a child and have

  1373. nowhere to go and

  1374. are going to be

  1375. finding it

  1376. difficult.

  1377. We need to

  1378. provide a place

  1379. where they can

  1380. come and be

  1381. looked after and

  1382. walked through and

  1383. say, you know

  1384. what, when you

  1385. have your baby, we

  1386. will stand there

  1387. with you.

  1388. It's not enough

  1389. for us to say

  1390. no.

  1391. We need to

  1392. think in terms of

  1393. building these

  1394. centres that will

  1395. be fully equipped

  1396. and staffed to

  1397. look after the

  1398. most vulnerable of

  1399. our society.

  1400. That's where we

  1401. need to go.

  1402. And third, adopt

  1403. life.

  1404. You see, again,

  1405. it's not enough to

  1406. say it's wrong

  1407. and start pointing

  1408. fingers.

  1409. We need to be

  1410. prepared to open

  1411. our homes, to

  1412. adopt children, to

  1413. foster children, to

  1414. say to those who

  1415. for various reasons

  1416. can't manage to

  1417. care for their

  1418. children, who

  1419. perhaps haven't had

  1420. the privilege of

1421. some of us in the

  1422. homes that we were

  1423. raised, to say, I

  1424. will care for your

1425. son, I will care for

  1426. your daughter.

  1427. What a beautiful

  1428. and precious gift

  1429. to care for life.

  1430. A beautiful and

  1431. precious gift to

  1432. care for little

  1433. children.

  1434. As I think about

  1435. these three responses

  1436. celebrating life,

  1437. protecting life,

  1438. not just speaking

  1439. out, not just

  1440. putting my tick in

  1441. the box when it

  1442. comes to vote, but

  1443. thinking of where I'll

  1444. put my resources in

  1445. building a place of

  1446. care and being

  1447. equipped to look

  1448. after people.

  1449. Thinking about

  1450. looking after other

  1451. children, adopting

  1452. them into your

  1453. family.

  1454. As I reflect on

  1455. that, I have some

  1456. serious, serious

  1457. thinking to do.

  1458. And I think we

  1459. all, as God's

  1460. people, have some

  1461. serious thinking to

  1462. do.

  1463. God has given

  1464. us life.

  1465. We are to

  1466. protect life.

  1467. We are to show

  1468. people the way of

  1469. life through the

  1470. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1471. We need to pray.

  1472. In our news sheet

  1473. this morning, if you

  1474. open up into the

  1475. middle pages,

  1476. there's a number

  1477. of prayers that

  1478. are written

  1479. there.

  1480. If you haven't

  1481. got one and you

  1482. need to get one,

  1483. please do.

  1484. But there's a

  1485. number of different

  1486. prayers all the way

  1487. down the page.

  1488. And I'm just

  1489. simply going to

  1490. invite us now,

  1491. where we are,

  1492. to pray.

  1493. It may be just

  1494. simply, if you

  1495. find it hard to

  1496. pray out loud,

  1497. just to simply

  1498. read the prayer

  1499. that's written

  1500. there.

  1501. They can just be

  1502. short prayers,

  1503. to thank God

  1504. for life,

  1505. to pray for our

  1506. government, to

  1507. pray for the

  1508. pro-life organisation,

  1509. to pray for people

  1510. like Anne and the

  1511. work that they are

  1512. doing.

  1513. Let's pray.

  1514. together.

  1515. Father,

  1516. we declare

  1517. that you are

  1518. a good God.

  1519. You are our

  1520. creator God.

  1521. You made us

  1522. and you formed us.

  1523. You delight in us.

  1524. You take pleasure

  1525. in us.

  1526. You give us the

  1527. breath that we

  1528. breathe.

  1529. You give us

  1530. health and strength.

  1531. You sustain us

  1532. and keep us.

  1533. You are an

  1534. amazing God.

  1535. And not only

  1536. have you given us

  1537. physical life,

  1538. but through your

  1539. Son,

  1540. you have given us

  1541. new and eternal

  1542. life.

  1543. forgiveness of all

  1544. of our sin.

  1545. So that we

  1546. might know you

  1547. and enjoy you

  1548. in a personal

  1549. and intimate

  1550. way.

  1551. That we might

  1552. enjoy your

  1553. eternal kingdom

  1554. of a world

  1555. where

  1556. there will never

  1557. be again

  1558. the death

  1559. of an unborn.

  1560. never again

  1561. will an old

  1562. person die.

  1563. But life

  1564. will go on

  1565. as you

  1566. planned and

  1567. you determined

  1568. at the very

  1569. beginning.

  1570. You will put

  1571. all things

  1572. right.

  1573. Father,

  1574. we are sorry

  1575. for the times

  1576. we have been

  1577. silent.

  1578. Please forgive

  1579. us.

  1580. Father,

  1581. we are sorry

  1582. for the times

  1583. we have

  1584. given off

  1585. and complained

  1586. and spoken

  1587. harshly to

  1588. our children

  1589. and not

  1590. treated them

  1591. as a blessing

  1592. that they are.

  1593. Forgive us,

  1594. Father.

  1595. Help us to

  1596. treasure life,

  1597. to celebrate

  1598. life,

  1599. to nurture

  1600. life.

  1601. We pray

  1602. for your help

  1603. in doing

  1604. this.

  1605. Amen.

  1606. I just

  1607. leave an

  1608. open time

  1609. now for

  1610. those who

  1611. would like

  1612. to respond

  1613. in prayer.

  1614. Amen.

  1615. Amen.
