  1. We thank you that you have given us health and strength to be here this morning,

  2. to be able to hear from your word, to hear from your truth.

  3. And Father, we want your word to speak into our lives, to bring us encouragement,

  4. to bring us comfort, to bring us help as we face the reality of death itself.

  5. Lord, help us, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  6. Amen.

  7. Amen.

  8. Tom Curran cared lovingly for his partner, Marie Fleming, for 15 years.

  9. She had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease which attacks the central nervous system.

  10. Marie died on the 20th of December, 2013.

  11. Tom, her partner, said this.

  12. She knew that she faced the likelihood of a prolonged and possibly painful death.

  13. And she, as a strong-willed person, was not prepared to let that happen.

  14. Marie didn't want to die.

  15. Far from it.

  16. Marie wanted to live.

  17. She was never suicidal.

  18. But she didn't want a bad death.

  19. Just over a year ago, Tom admitted that he had assisted Marie to die.

  20. Assisted suicide, he said, is about providing a peaceful and painless death.

  21. Euthanasia, sometimes referred to as assisted suicide or physician-assisted suicide,

  22. is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma.

  23. Others prefer to call it merciful release or easeful death.

  24. Gail O'Rourke was a long-standing friend and carer of a lady called Bernadette Ford.

  25. Bernadette also suffered with MS and wanted to die.

  26. As the pain and disability increased, Bernadette asked for her trusted friend Gail to help her.

  27. Bernadette died in 2011 after taking a lethal dose of barbiturates, which was ordered by Gail from Mexico.

  28. She'd been suffering for a decade and decided to take her own life.

  29. Gail was the first person in Ireland to be charged, but later acquitted, for helping someone to die.

  30. Gail asked in an interview on the Late Late Show, asked if she felt any guilt, Gail said this,

  31. The guilt I would feel is that if Bernadette was now confined to a nursing home or a care home,

  32. where she was going through the indignities that she wanted to avoid so much.

  33. The sad reality is we will all one day die.

  34. And for some that's going to involve painful suffering.

  35. For some it could be dementia, for another it could be disability.

  36. The need of 24-hour care.

  37. Unable to feed yourself.

  38. Needing to be changed and taken to the toilet.

  39. None of us wants a painful death.

  40. And none of us wants to see our loved ones suffer.

  41. And for some the most loving thing to do is to end their life.

  42. Stephen Hawking, the renowned physicist, who himself is confined to a wheelchair and needing care, said this,

  43. Those who have a terminal illness and are in great pain should have the right to choose to end their lives.

  44. And those who help them should be free from prosecution.

  45. You see, this is not an intellectual issue that we have to kind of get our heads around.

  46. This is a deeply personal issue that every family will have to face.

  47. At one level, it sounds a good and right thing to do.

  48. It's presented as the simple choice between a quick ending to life or a long life of pain.

  49. After all, who wants to suffer?

  50. And it's arguments like this that has made assisted suicide legal in the Netherlands and Belgium.

  51. But it's not that simple.

  52. The Iona Institute for Religion and Society in Ireland noted,

  53. here's the quote,

  54. that in both the Netherlands and Belgium, assisted suicide was initially made available for terminal illnesses.

  55. But soon, I'm going to have to read that again.

  56. Sorry, I've got my wording wrong.

  57. In both the Netherlands and Belgium, assisted suicide was initially made available for terminal illnesses only.

  58. But soon the law was changed to include non-terminal conditions, including psychiatric illnesses.

  59. I'm going to quote some of the findings.

  60. So in the Netherlands, euthanasia was legalized in 2001.

  61. The number of euthanasia and assisted suicide deaths went from 1,882 in 2002 to 6,091 in 2016.

  62. That represents a 324% increase in just 14 years, despite the warnings that it would be very, very rare.

  63. The grounds for assisted suicide and euthanasia have also widened so that they take in non-terminal conditions.

  64. So in 2016, 141 people were killed because of dementia, 60 for psychiatric reasons and 244 for advanced age.

  65. And if that's not bad enough, non-voluntary euthanasia is also permitted.

  66. That is where a patient is euthanized without their explicit consent.

  67. As a result, many elderly people are now carrying cards to say that they don't want to be euthanized.

  68. In Belgium and Switzerland, mental illness can be a basis for euthanasia or assisted suicide.

  69. A study published in 2015 in the British Medical Journal shows that of 100 patients who requested euthanasia for psychiatric reasons,

  70. not one was terminally ill.

  71. They suffered from mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, eating disorders.

  72. The most frequent diagnosis was depression.

  73. Belgium also allows children of all ages to choose euthanasia, provided parental consent is granted.

  74. In Washington, one of the US states where euthanasia is legal, a report noted that 61% of those who chose assisted suicide

  75. stated as one of the reasons for their decision, their feeling that they were a burden on family, friends and caregivers.

  76. You see, what has started out as a personal choice to end your suffering is fast becoming a choice made by others,

  77. whether you live or die.

  78. And with growing costs in health care and long-term care, families are put under increasing financial pressure,

  79. and governments are providing a way out by making the removal of life legal.

  80. Euthanasia could be spelt by using the word Holocaust.

  81. Euthanasia could be spelt by using the word Holocaust.

  82. Euthanasia could be spelt by using the word Holocaust.

  83. If we can make laws that end the life of the unborn,

  84. then we can easily end the life of those we choose or deem to be a burden to society.

  85. Euthanasia could be spelt by the word Holocaust.

  86. Euthanasia could be spelt by the word Holocaust.

  87. We are facing into a very real issue.

  88. But there is another way.

  89. Three things that I want us to be encouraged by through God.

  90. First, life is God's right to give and to take.

  91. Life is God's right to give and to take.

  92. Right at the very beginning of the Bible where we've started all our talks in this series,

  93. we see that God alone has authority over all life.

  94. Go to Genesis chapter 1 with me.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  95. We'll read some verses there together.

  96. Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  97. You might remember some of these things from our study on Wednesday night.

  98. That God speaks by his very word and brings life into existence.

  99. Genesis 1 verse 27.

    Genesis 1:27

  100. The culmination of God's creation process.

  101. Chapter 1 verse 27.

  102. So God created mankind in his own image.

  103. In the image of God he created them, male and female.

  104. He created them.

  105. And then when we get to Genesis 2, we get a more detailed account of the creation of mankind.

  106. And here we have an account of how God created man in more detail.

  107. So chapter 2 verse 7.

  108. It says there,

  109. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground

  110. and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

  111. And the man became a living being.

  112. So you remember in Genesis 1, there's a lot of forming that's going on.

  113. God is forming creation.

  114. Shaping it.

  115. Designing it.

  116. Ordering it.

  117. And here in 2 verse 7,

  118. we have the picture of God as it were,

  119. picking up the earth, the dust from the ground

  120. and forming it,

  121. shaping it,

  122. into a man,

  123. into a being.

  124. But it doesn't stop there.

  125. For God must breathe into mankind the breath of life.

  126. And man becomes a living being.

  127. God gives life.

  128. God sustains life.

  129. And therefore God rules over life.

  130. Of course the alternative is that we are simply here by chance.

  131. That we're just a random collection of atoms and molecules

  132. that have evolved over time.

  133. We've come from nowhere

  134. and we're headed nowhere.

  135. We're simply the results of some impersonal scientific process.

  136. And if that is true,

  137. well then we're free to do what we want.

  138. We are autonomous, independent beings

  139. with no moral compass.

  140. We decide who lives.

  141. And who dies.

  142. But if we are a special creation of God,

  143. made in his likeness,

  144. given the very breath of life,

  145. then we are not free to choose whatever we want to do.

  146. We are formed by God

  147. and we are filled with life by God.

  148. God gives us life

  149. and so God rules over our life.

  150. So God is the one who gives life.

  151. And second,

  152. God is the one who takes life.

  153. In Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  154. we meet the first children of Adam and Eve,

  155. Cain and Abel.

  156. We pick up the story in chapter 4, verse 8.

  157. It's the account,

  158. there's jealousy between them.

  159. Abel is accepted,

  160. his sacrifice has been accepted by God.

  161. Cain's attitude has been wrong.

  162. And Cain comes up with a plan.

  163. Chapter 4, verse 8.

  164. Now Cain said to his brother Abel,

  165. let's go out to the field.

  166. And while they were in the field,

  167. Cain attacked his brother Abel

  168. and killed him.

  169. Now because life was not Cain's to take,

  170. God punished Cain

  171. and he said you'll wander the wilderness.

  172. And look how Cain responds.

  173. Look at the end of verse 14.

  174. He says to God,

  175. he responds to him,

  176. I will be a restless wanderer on the earth

  177. and whoever finds me will kill me.

  178. But the Lord said to him,

  179. not so.

  180. Anyone who kills Cain

  181. will suffer vengeance seven times over.

  182. Then the Lord put a mark on Cain

  183. so that no one who found him

  184. would kill him.

  185. You see, life is precious.

  186. Even those who have taken life,

  187. their life is precious.

  188. We do not have the right

  189. to take life as we desire.

  190. And what God said to Cain

  191. was later written in law

  192. for all God's people.

  193. In the Ten Commandments,

  194. you're familiar with this,

  195. God said you shall not murder.

  196. The Lord Jesus in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  197. it's recorded for us there

  198. in his Sermon on the Mount,

  199. reiterated the same command.

  200. You shall not murder.

  201. The implication is

  202. we are to protect life,

  203. value life,

  204. keep life.

  205. In fact, God

  206. alone has the authority

  207. to take life.

  208. Deuteronomy 32 says,

  209. See now that I myself am he.

  210. There is no God beside me.

  211. I put to death

  212. and I bring to life.

  213. I have wounded

  214. and I will heal.

  215. And no one can deliver

  216. out of my hand.

  217. It's a very, very dangerous thing

  218. for us to start playing God with life.

  219. It is not our role.

  220. Life is a gift from God.

  221. And only God

  222. has the right

  223. to take that life.

  224. So first,

  225. life

  226. is God's right

  227. to give

  228. and to take.

  229. The second thing

  230. is that

  231. suffering

  232. is used by God

  233. for

  234. our good.

  235. Suffering is used

  236. by God

  237. for our good.

  238. For many,

  239. suffering

  240. is a good reason

  241. to help someone

  242. end their life.

  243. the patient

  244. doesn't want

  245. to suffer

  246. and the carer

  247. doesn't want

  248. to see them suffer.

  249. Now,

  250. while God

  251. never ever says

  252. that suffering

  253. is good,

  254. on the other hand,

  255. God uses

  256. suffering

  257. for our good.

  258. Two things

  259. we want to note

  260. with this.

  261. First,

  262. God is over

  263. suffering.

  264. suffering.

  265. Let's look at

  266. the book of Job.

  267. It's on page

  268. 507.

  269. The book of Job

  270. on page

  271. 507,

  272. if you're using

  273. a church

  274. Bible.

  275. Page 507.

  276. Job 1

  277. introduces us

  278. to this man

  279. who loved God.

  280. But chapter 1

  281. tells us

  282. the account

  283. of his life

  284. that he was a man

  285. who suffered greatly.

  286. He lost

  287. his entire wealth.

  288. He lost

  289. all his children

  290. in a tornado.

  291. And on top

  292. of that,

  293. he lost

  294. his health.

  295. He was

  296. afflicted

  297. with a

  298. disabling

  299. painful

  300. skin disease

  301. of which

  302. there seems

  303. to be

  304. little relief.

  305. They didn't

  306. have the

  307. medication

  308. that we

  309. have today.

  310. And

  311. understandably,

  312. Job's wife

  313. didn't like

  314. and didn't

  315. want to see

  316. him suffer.

  317. So we pick

  318. it up in

  319. Job chapter 2

    Job 2:9

  320. verse 9.

  321. So Job

  322. has been

  323. suffering

  324. greatly

  325. physically

  326. and his

  327. wife comes

  328. to him

  329. chapter 2

  330. verse 9

  331. and says,

  332. are you

  333. still

  334. maintaining

  335. your

  336. integrity?

  337. Curse

  338. God

  339. and die.

  340. The

  341. suggestion

  342. is,

  343. Job,

  344. why don't

  345. you just

  346. end your

  347. life?

  348. Why don't

  349. you just

  350. end the

  351. suffering

  352. that you're

  353. going

  354. through?

  355. I remember

  356. listening to

  357. the testimony

  358. of a family

  359. friend

  360. who suffers

  361. with severe

  362. crippling

  363. back pain.

  364. They

  365. told how

  366. one day

  367. they sat

  368. on the

  369. edge of

  370. the bed

  371. with all

  372. their pills

  373. in their

  374. hand,

  375. ready to

  376. overdose.

  377. It's not

  378. unthinkable

  379. for any

  380. one of us

  381. in this

  382. room to

  383. want to

  384. end the

  385. pain

  386. and

  387. suffering.

  388. That can

  389. be a

  390. real issue.

  391. Look how

  392. Job responds,

  393. chapter 2

  394. verse 10.

  395. He replied

  396. to his

  397. wife,

  398. you are

  399. talking like

  400. a foolish

  401. woman.

  402. Shall we

  403. accept good

  404. from God

  405. and not

  406. trouble?

  407. In all

  408. this,

  409. Job did

  410. not sin

  411. in what

  412. he said.

  413. You see,

  414. Job recognized

  415. that all

  416. of life,

  417. whether it

  418. was in

  419. good health

  420. or whether

  421. he was

  422. suffering,

  423. was

  424. completely

  425. in God's

  426. sovereign

  427. control.

  428. The

  429. Apostle

  430. Paul picks

  431. up the

  432. same

  433. theme

  434. in

  435. Romans

  436. 8.

  437. A

  438. familiar

  439. verse

  440. to us.

  441. Paul in

  442. chapter 8

  443. has been

  444. talking about

  445. the present

  446. sufferings,

  447. the struggles

  448. that we

  449. face in

  450. life,

  451. and then

  452. he says

  453. this towards

  454. the end.

  455. He says,

  456. and we

  457. know that

  458. in all

  459. things,

  460. that all

  461. things is

  462. in all

  463. kinds of

  464. struggles,

  465. in all

  466. kinds of

  467. pain,

  468. in all

  469. kinds of

  470. things that

  471. we go

  472. through in

  473. life,

  474. God works

  475. for the

  476. good of

  477. those who

  478. love him,

  479. who have

  480. been called

  481. according to

  482. his purpose.

  483. God takes

  484. every illness,

  485. every disease,

  486. and every

  487. struggle,

  488. and says,

  489. in the midst

  490. of all of

  491. that,

  492. I work

  493. good,

  494. for those

  495. who love

  496. me,

  497. and who

  498. have been

  499. called

  500. according to

  501. my purpose.

  502. You see,

  503. God is

  504. over

  505. suffering,

  506. and while

  507. he never

  508. says suffering

  509. is good,

  510. God uses

  511. suffering for

  512. our good.

  513. suffering,

  514. it's never

  515. easy,

  516. and while we

  517. never,

  518. or perhaps

  519. don't get

  520. the answers

  521. that we

  522. always want,

  523. God does

  524. in his

  525. word show

  526. us how

  527. he uses

  528. it for

  529. our good.

  530. There's

  531. many ways

  532. it will be

  533. a very

  534. helpful study

  535. for you

  536. to think

  537. about that.

  538. in fact,

  539. Desiring

  540. God

  541. this week

  542. had a

  543. little

  544. article,

  545. I think,

  546. on that

  547. very

  548. subject.

  549. You

  550. could look

  551. it up

  552. when you

  553. go home.

  554. But I

  555. want to

  556. show us

  557. three ways

  558. that God

  559. uses it

  560. for our

  561. good.

  562. Have a

  563. look at

  564. 2 Corinthians,

  565. which is

  566. on page

  567. 1159.

  568. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  569. chapter 1,

  570. which is

  571. on page

  572. 1159.

  573. 9.

  574. So let's

  575. keep this

  576. in mind.

  577. God doesn't

  578. say suffering

  579. is good,

  580. but in

  581. God's

  582. ways,

  583. God uses

  584. the suffering

  585. that we

  586. face,

  587. and he

  588. uses it

  589. for our

  590. good.

  591. So three

  592. ways he

  593. does that.

  594. first,

  595. for our

  596. comfort.

  597. Chapter 1,

  598. verse 3,

  599. Praise be

  600. to the

  601. God and

  602. Father of

  603. our Lord

  604. Jesus

  605. Christ,

  606. the

  607. Father of

  608. compassion

  609. and the

  610. God of

  611. all comfort,

  612. who comforts

  613. us in

  614. all our

  615. troubles.

  616. You see,

  617. in our

  618. suffering,

  619. we're not

  620. alone.

  621. God is

  622. not immune

  623. to the

  624. struggles

  625. we face.

  626. God

  627. comforts

  628. us,

  629. he sustains

  630. us,

  631. he keeps

  632. us,

  633. he draws

  634. near to

  635. us,

  636. he gives

  637. us all

  638. that we

  639. need in

  640. that

  641. moment.

  642. But it's

  643. not just

  644. for our

  645. own

  646. good that

  647. God

  648. comforts

  649. us.

  650. Look at

  651. the rest

  652. of verse

  653. 4.

  654. He

  655. comforts

  656. us in

  657. all our

  658. troubles

  659. so that

  660. we can

  661. comfort

  662. those in

  663. any

  664. trouble

  665. with the

  666. comfort we

  667. ourselves

  668. receive

  669. from God.

  670. our

  671. personal

  672. sufferings

  673. enable us

  674. in the

  675. midst of

  676. suffering

  677. to comfort

  678. and strengthen

  679. others.

  680. Through the

  681. pain that

  682. we may

  683. experience,

  684. whether it's

  685. the loss

  686. of a

  687. loved one

  688. or watching

  689. someone we

  690. love dearly

  691. go through

  692. hard times,

  693. as we go

  694. through that

  695. pain,

  696. so we're

  697. enabled to

  698. feel and

  699. understand the

  700. pain of

  701. others,

  702. to simply

  703. sit with

  704. them.

  705. To cry

  706. with them,

  707. to listen

  708. to them,

  709. to comfort

  710. them.

  711. Second,

  712. dependence.

  713. Look down

  714. at chapter

  715. 1,

  716. verse 8.

  717. We do

  718. not want

  719. you to be

  720. uninformed,

  721. brothers and

  722. sisters,

  723. about the

  724. troubles we

  725. experienced in

  726. the province

  727. of Asia.

  728. We were

  729. under great

  730. pressure,

  731. far beyond

  732. our ability

  733. to endure,

  734. so that we

  735. despaired of

  736. life itself.

  737. We often

  738. think of

  739. Paul as

  740. being this

  741. strong man

  742. facing anything.

  743. but here

  744. he tells

  745. us that he

  746. despaired of

  747. life itself.

  748. The pressures,

  749. the intensity,

  750. the suffering

  751. that he was

  752. going through,

  753. partly his

  754. own illness

  755. because he

  756. talked about

  757. his own

  758. illness,

  759. partly because

  760. of persecution

  761. and opposition,

  762. but all

  763. these things,

  764. the intensity

  765. of it all

  766. is that Paul

  767. had reached

  768. the point in

  769. his life

  770. where he

  771. just wanted

  772. to die.

  773. He'd had

  774. enough.

  775. Verse 9,

  776. indeed he

  777. said,

  778. we felt we

  779. had received

  780. the sentence

  781. of death.

  782. He couldn't

  783. bear it or

  784. take it

  785. anymore.

  786. But,

  787. but this

  788. happened that

  789. we might not

  790. rely on

  791. ourselves,

  792. but on

  793. God who

  794. raises the

  795. dead.

  796. God takes

  797. the suffering

  798. and uses

  799. it so that

  800. we can

  801. depend on

  802. the Lord

  803. of life.

  804. Our pain

  805. that we go

  806. through,

  807. the struggles

  808. that we go

  809. through,

  810. God moves

  811. it so we

  812. rest and

  813. rely on

  814. him who

  815. gives us

  816. strength.

  817. The third

  818. area is

  819. the area

  820. of salvation.

  821. to help

  822. us through

  823. this,

  824. I want

  825. to give

  826. us a

  827. foundation,

  828. and that

  829. is first

  830. to think

  831. of the

  832. sufferings

  833. of Christ

  834. on the

  835. cross.

  836. Because it

  837. is through

  838. the sufferings

  839. of Christ

  840. on the

  841. cross that

  842. salvation

  843. flows to

  844. the world.

  845. Without

  846. Christ

  847. dying for

  848. us,

  849. there would

  850. be no

  851. salvation.

  852. And as

  853. we put

  854. our faith

  855. in Christ,

  856. for him

  857. who died

  858. for us

  859. and took

  860. the blame

  861. for us

  862. through those

  863. sufferings,

  864. as Christ

  865. suffered hell

  866. itself,

  867. we receive

  868. the blessings

  869. of life

  870. and life

  871. eternal.

  872. So God

  873. uses the

  874. sufferings of

  875. Christ to

  876. bring salvation

  877. to us,

  878. to the

  879. world.

  880. Now that

  881. foundation we

  882. keep in mind

  883. as we read

  884. verse 5.

  885. Go back to

  886. verse 5.

  887. For just

  888. as we

  889. share

  890. abundantly

  891. in the

  892. sufferings

  893. of Christ,

  894. so also

  895. our comfort

  896. abounds

  897. through Christ.

  898. If we

  899. are distressed,

  900. it is for

  901. your comfort

  902. and salvation.

  903. You see,

  904. God works

  905. through the

  906. sufferings of

  907. Christ to

  908. bring salvation.

  909. And now

  910. he's saying

  911. that for

  912. those who

  913. are in

  914. Christ.

  915. As we

  916. are in

  917. Christ,

  918. we will

  919. go through

  920. sufferings

  921. in different

  922. ways,

  923. but yet

  924. through our

  925. weakness,

  926. through our

  927. pains,

  928. through our

  929. struggles,

  930. God is

  931. bringing about

  932. not just

  933. the comfort

  934. of people,

  935. but he is

  936. bringing about

  937. the salvation

  938. of people.

  939. people.

  940. A lot of

  941. you will

  942. know the

  943. lady

  944. Joni or

  945. Joni

  946. Erickson

  947. Tada.

  948. She's been

  949. a quadriplegic

  950. for over

  951. 50 years

  952. now.

  953. As a

  954. teenager,

  955. she suffered

  956. a diving

  957. accident,

  958. and as a

  959. young teen,

  960. as she lay

  961. in the

  962. hospital unable

  963. to be

  964. moved,

  965. she longed

  966. for her

  967. miserable life

  968. to be

  969. taken,

  970. longing that

  971. someone would

  972. just literally

  973. pull the

  974. plug.

  975. But through

  976. her faith,

  977. she found

  978. purpose in

  979. Christ.

  980. Today,

  981. she still

  982. struggles,

  983. she needs

  984. 24-7 care,

  985. she has no

  986. use of her

  987. body below

  988. her neck,

  989. still suffering,

  990. God has

  991. used her to

  992. reach and

  993. comfort

  994. thousands upon

  995. thousands of

  996. people through

  997. her teaching

  998. ministry and

  999. through her

  1000. books.

  1001. And she

  1002. has led

  1003. many,

  1004. many people

  1005. to Christ,

  1006. pointing them

  1007. to the one

  1008. who can

  1009. save.

  1010. You see,

  1011. suffering in

  1012. the hands

  1013. of God

  1014. can be used

  1015. for great

  1016. and eternal

  1017. good.

  1018. Suffering is

  1019. never wasted

  1020. in God's

  1021. hands.

  1022. Third,

  1023. death is

  1024. determined and

  1025. conquered by

  1026. God.

  1027. It's

  1028. determined and

  1029. conquered by

  1030. God.

  1031. When people

  1032. seek out

  1033. euthanasia,

  1034. they simply

  1035. come to the

  1036. conclusion that

  1037. life is not

  1038. worth living

  1039. anymore.

  1040. They see no

  1041. value or

  1042. purpose in

  1043. living another

  1044. day or drawing

  1045. another breath.

  1046. But Scripture

  1047. has another

  1048. answer.

  1049. God provides

  1050. us with

  1051. something much

  1052. different,

  1053. that every

  1054. day of our

  1055. life, God

  1056. gives us

  1057. purpose.

  1058. First,

  1059. death, God

  1060. determines

  1061. death.

  1062. Job knew

  1063. that his

  1064. life was

  1065. in God's

  1066. control.

  1067. Just working

  1068. your way

  1069. through Job,

  1070. we pick up

  1071. how he

  1072. understands

  1073. this.

  1074. I've quoted

  1075. them here

  1076. for you.

  1077. Chapter 1,

  1078. verse 21,

  1079. he says,

  1080. as he

  1081. reflected on

  1082. the death

  1083. of his

  1084. own family,

  1085. his own

  1086. children,

  1087. he could

  1088. say,

  1089. the Lord

  1090. gave and

  1091. the Lord

  1092. has taken

  1093. away.

  1094. Blessed be

  1095. the name

  1096. of the

  1097. Lord.

  1098. Later on,

  1099. he will

  1100. say this,

  1101. in his

  1102. hands is

  1103. the life

  1104. of every

  1105. creature

  1106. and the

  1107. breath of

  1108. all mankind.

  1109. Our life

  1110. is in the

  1111. very hands

  1112. of God.

  1113. chapter 14,

  1114. verse 5,

  1115. a person's

  1116. days are

  1117. determined.

  1118. You,

  1119. that is God,

  1120. have decreed

  1121. the number

  1122. of his

  1123. months

  1124. and have

  1125. set limits

  1126. he cannot

  1127. exceed.

  1128. God alone

  1129. determines

  1130. how long

  1131. we live

  1132. and the

  1133. moment we

  1134. die.

  1135. Nobody

  1136. else.

  1137. God will

  1138. not let

  1139. us live

  1140. one minute

  1141. too long

  1142. or die

  1143. a second

  1144. too early.

  1145. Every day,

  1146. every moment,

  1147. every second

  1148. of our life,

  1149. God is

  1150. filled with

  1151. purpose

  1152. until he

  1153. decides we

  1154. no longer

  1155. breathe.

  1156. we see

  1157. the same

  1158. in Psalm

  1159. 139.

  1160. For you

  1161. created my

  1162. inmost being,

  1163. you knit me

  1164. together in

  1165. my mother's

  1166. womb,

  1167. I praise you

  1168. because I

  1169. am fearfully

  1170. and wonderfully

  1171. made.

  1172. Your eyes

  1173. saw my

  1174. unformed

  1175. body,

  1176. and all

  1177. the days

  1178. ordained

  1179. for me

  1180. were written

  1181. in your

  1182. book before

  1183. one of them

  1184. came to

  1185. be.

  1186. every day

  1187. has purpose.

  1188. Every day

  1189. has been

  1190. ordained by

  1191. God from

  1192. eternity

  1193. past.

  1194. Your life

  1195. is known

  1196. by God.

  1197. He knows

  1198. what you

  1199. will face,

  1200. he knows

  1201. what you

  1202. will see,

  1203. he knows

  1204. what you

  1205. will endure,

  1206. and we

  1207. may struggle

  1208. to see the

  1209. significance

  1210. of our

  1211. suffering

  1212. life,

  1213. but God

  1214. has his

  1215. purpose.

  1216. and God

  1217. is working

  1218. things out

  1219. according to

  1220. his plan.

  1221. Every day

  1222. we draw

  1223. breath,

  1224. God is

  1225. using us

  1226. and working

  1227. through us

  1228. to achieve

  1229. his plan

  1230. and his

  1231. glory.

  1232. So death

  1233. is determined

  1234. by God

  1235. and wonderfully,

  1236. wonderfully,

  1237. death has

  1238. been conquered

  1239. by God.

  1240. Job

  1241. knew that

  1242. life and

  1243. death were

  1244. determined by

  1245. God,

  1246. but he also

  1247. knew that

  1248. death was

  1249. not the

  1250. end.

  1251. Have a look

  1252. with me in

  1253. Job chapter

    Job 19:25

  1254. 19,

  1255. verse 25,

  1256. Job chapter

    Job 19 chapter mention

  1257. 19.

  1258. not only

  1259. incredible

  1260. because Job

  1261. is saying

  1262. this,

  1263. I don't

  1264. know how

  1265. many hundreds

  1266. of years

  1267. or thousands

  1268. of years

  1269. before the

  1270. coming of

  1271. Christ,

  1272. before the

  1273. resurrection,

  1274. but amazing

  1275. because this

  1276. is personal

  1277. testimony.

  1278. This is one

  1279. who lived in

  1280. the midst of

  1281. great suffering

  1282. and here's

  1283. his testimony.

  1284. Chapter 19,

  1285. verse 25.

  1286. I know

  1287. that my

  1288. Redeemer

  1289. lives and

  1290. that in the

  1291. end he

  1292. will stand

  1293. on the

  1294. earth,

  1295. literally,

  1296. he will

  1297. stand on

  1298. the grave.

  1299. That is,

  1300. he will

  1301. have power

  1302. and authority

  1303. over the

  1304. grave and

  1305. over death

  1306. itself.

  1307. and after

  1308. my skin

  1309. has been

  1310. destroyed,

  1311. so when

  1312. this disease,

  1313. when its

  1314. suffering has

  1315. taken its

  1316. full effect

  1317. and he

  1318. reaches into

  1319. later age

  1320. and he

  1321. dies,

  1322. yet in

  1323. my flesh

  1324. I will

  1325. see God.

  1326. I myself

  1327. will see

  1328. him with

  1329. my own

  1330. eyes,

  1331. I and

  1332. not another,

  1333. how my

  1334. heart yearns

  1335. within me.

  1336. Job could

  1337. look forward

  1338. in faith

  1339. to the

  1340. promised

  1341. resurrection.

  1342. He knew

  1343. that one

  1344. day God

  1345. would destroy

  1346. death and

  1347. conquer the

  1348. grave for

  1349. us and

  1350. the promise,

  1351. that promise

  1352. of God

  1353. became a

  1354. reality when

  1355. God became

  1356. man,

  1357. born into

  1358. this world

  1359. through his

  1360. mum,

  1361. lived this

  1362. life,

  1363. breathed

  1364. life as

  1365. God gave

  1366. him the

  1367. ability to

  1368. breathe and

  1369. died our

  1370. death and

  1371. was buried

  1372. and rose

  1373. again from

  1374. the grave

  1375. three days

  1376. later.

  1377. You see,

  1378. those who

  1379. ignore

  1380. Christ,

  1381. those who

  1382. turn away

  1383. from what

  1384. God has

  1385. to say,

  1386. not only

  1387. die but

  1388. have an

  1389. eternity

  1390. of

  1391. suffering.

  1392. It's

  1393. suffering away

  1394. from God,

  1395. separated from

  1396. God in

  1397. hell itself.

  1398. But for

  1399. those whose

  1400. hope is in

  1401. Christ,

  1402. there is a

  1403. glorious

  1404. resurrection.

  1405. And like

  1406. Job,

  1407. we can say

  1408. with absolute

  1409. confidence and

  1410. assurance,

  1411. look at these

  1412. words again,

  1413. verse 25,

  1414. this, if we

  1415. are trusting

  1416. in Christ,

  1417. is our

  1418. story,

  1419. is our

  1420. personal

  1421. testimony.

  1422. Can you

  1423. say these

  1424. words for

  1425. yourself?

  1426. I know

  1427. that my

  1428. Redeemer

  1429. lives,

  1430. and that in

  1431. the end he

  1432. will stand

  1433. on the

  1434. earth.

  1435. And after

  1436. my skin

  1437. has been

  1438. destroyed,

  1439. when I

  1440. die,

  1441. yet in

  1442. my flesh

  1443. I will

  1444. see

  1445. God.

  1446. I

  1447. myself

  1448. will see

  1449. him

  1450. with my

  1451. own eyes,

  1452. I and

  1453. not another.

  1454. How

  1455. incredible is

  1456. that?

  1457. One day

  1458. we will

  1459. see God.

  1460. We will be

  1461. with him.

  1462. And all

  1463. the pain

  1464. and all the

  1465. suffering will

  1466. be gone.

  1467. and there

  1468. will be no

  1469. more death

  1470. and no

  1471. more tears.

  1472. How my

  1473. heart yearns

  1474. within me.

  1475. Let's

  1476. pray.

  1477. Let's

  1478. pray.

  1479. Let's

  1480. pray.

  1481. Let's

  1482. pray.

  1483. Let's

  1484. pray.

  1485. Let's

  1486. pray.

  1487. Let's

  1488. pray.

  1489. Let's

  1490. pray.

  1491. pray.

  1492. Let's

  1493. pray.

  1494. Let's

  1495. pray.

  1496. Let's

  1497. pray.

  1498. Let's

  1499. pray.

  1500. Let's

  1501. pray.

  1502. Let's

  1503. pray.

  1504. I read

  1505. the words

  1506. that we

  1507. read at

  1508. the very

  1509. beginning

  1510. this

  1511. morning

  1512. as a

  1513. prayer.

  1514. Brothers

  1515. and

  1516. sisters,

  1517. we do

  1518. not want

  1519. you to

  1520. be

  1521. uninformed

  1522. about

  1523. those

  1524. who

  1525. sleep

  1526. in

  1527. death,

  1528. so

  1529. that

  1530. you

  1531. do

  1532. not

  1533. grieve

  1534. like

  1535. the

  1536. rest

  1537. of

  1538. mankind

  1539. who

  1540. have

  1541. no

  1542. hope.

  1543. For

  1544. we

  1545. believe

  1546. that Jesus

  1547. died and

  1548. rose

  1549. again,

  1550. and so

  1551. we

  1552. believe

  1553. that God

  1554. will bring

  1555. with

  1556. Jesus

  1557. all those

  1558. who have

  1559. fallen asleep

  1560. in him,

  1561. and so

  1562. we will

  1563. be with

  1564. the Lord

  1565. forever.

  1566. Therefore,

  1567. encourage

  1568. one another

  1569. with these

  1570. words.

  1571. Amen.

  1572. we're

  1573. going to

  1574. sing

  1575. because

  1576. it's

  1577. good to

  1578. sing.

  1579. It's

  1580. good to

  1581. sing to

  1582. express

  1583. truths

  1584. that we

  1585. believe

  1586. because

  1587. as we

  1588. sing

  1589. it

  1590. drives

  1591. those

  1592. truths

  1593. deeper

  1594. into

  1595. our

  1596. heart.

  1597. It

  1598. helps

  1599. us

  1600. express

  1601. where

  1602. our

  1603. hope

  1604. is.

  1605. And as

  1606. we

  1607. sing,

  1608. we

  1609. want to

  1610. sing

  1611. not only

  1612. thanking

  1613. God,

  1614. but sing

  1615. to the

  1616. person

  1617. next to

  1618. you.

  1619. Sing to

  1620. the

  1621. person

  1622. in this

  1623. room.

  1624. Encourage

  1625. one another

  1626. with these

  1627. words as

  1628. we tell

  1629. the story

  1630. through song

  1631. of the

  1632. resurrection

  1633. of Jesus

  1634. and the

  1635. life that

  1636. is to

  1637. come.

  1638. Let's

  1639. sing

  1640. together.

  1641. This

  1642. finns

  1643. out there.

  1644. Here

  1645. he is

  1646. the

  1647. other

  1648. questions
