  1. Luke 19, verse 45.

    Luke 19:45

  2. When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling.

  3. It is written, he said to them, my house will be a house of prayer,

  4. but you have made it a den of robbers.

  5. Every day he was teaching at the temple, but the chief priests, the teachers of the law,

  6. and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.

  7. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

  8. One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news,

  9. the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him.

  10. Tell us, by what authority you are doing these things, they said.

  11. Who gave you this authority?

  12. He replied, I will also ask you a question.

  13. Tell me, John's baptism, was it from heaven or of human origin?

  14. They discussed it among themselves and said, well, if we say from heaven, he will ask,

  15. why didn't you believe him?

  16. But if we say it's of human origin, all the people will stone us,

  17. because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

  18. So they answered, we don't know where it was from.

  19. Jesus said, neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

  20. He went on to tell the people this parable.

  21. A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers, went away for a long time.

  22. At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard.

  23. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

  24. He sent another servant, but that one they also beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.

  25. He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

  26. Then the owner of the vineyard said, what shall I do?

  27. I will send my son whom I love.

  28. Perhaps they will respect him.

  29. But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over.

  30. This is the heir, they said.

  31. Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.

  32. So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

  33. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

  34. He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

  35. When the people heard this, they said, God forbid.

  36. Jesus looked directly at them and asked,

  37. Then what is the meaning of that which is written?

  38. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

  39. Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces.

  40. Anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.

  41. The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately,

  42. because they knew he had spoken this parable against them.

  43. But they were afraid of the people.

  44. Well, let's pray together.

  45. Father, help us to have a mind that, as it were, takes us into the operating theatre.

  46. Father, to come before you and ask that by your word and by your Holy Spirit,

  47. you would cut us open.

  48. Show us what we are like.

  49. Show us who you are.

  50. Father, we submit to you.

  51. And pray that you would do your careful, skillful work on our hearts and lives today.

  52. In Jesus' name.

  53. Amen.

  54. Well, this is the last week of Jesus' life.

  55. As we move into chapter 20, it's four days' time before Jesus dies,

  56. when he will be executed on a wooden cross.

  57. After all, that's why Jesus came to Jerusalem.

  58. He came to die.

  59. But instead of keeping a low profile,

  60. perhaps spending the last few days with family and friends,

  61. Jesus heads straight for the temple.

  62. Chapter 20, verse 1.

  63. One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts

  64. and proclaiming the good news.

  65. The temple was the centre and focus of all religious and social life.

  66. It was also the home to what was called the Sanhedrin,

  67. which was a powerful ruling council

  68. made up of about 70 people.

  69. Although Sanhedrin isn't mentioned,

  70. the makeup of that ruling council is at the end of verse 1,

  71. where we read about the chief priests,

  72. the teachers of the law,

  73. together with the elders.

  74. They were responsible for overseeing all religious and social affairs.

  75. They were the rulers,

  76. the ones who held authority.

  77. They were like the church,

  78. the police,

  79. the law courts,

  80. all rolled into one.

  81. Get on the wrong side of the Sanhedrin

  82. and you could lose your life.

  83. Their word was final.

  84. But then if you remember from last week,

  85. Jesus has just arrived in Jerusalem

  86. and here he is claiming to be king.

  87. That he is the one who has supreme authority

  88. and that all people are answerable to him.

  89. That his word is final.

  90. And Jesus goes straight to the temple,

  91. the most public place,

  92. and confronts the Sanhedrin,

  93. this ruling council,

  94. on their home turf.

  95. This was a clash of authority.

  96. Now as we follow Jesus into the temple courts,

  97. we want to also see that Jesus is there

  98. confronting us.

  99. Two big things we're going to look at this morning.

  100. First, Jesus confronts us with his authority.

  101. Two ways Jesus does this.

  102. First, through his word.

  103. Let's pick it up again.

  104. Chapter 20, verse 1.

  105. One day as Jesus was teaching the people

  106. in the temple courts

  107. and proclaiming the good news,

  108. the chief priests,

  109. the teachers of the law,

  110. together with the elders,

  111. that's the Sanhedrin,

  112. the ruling council,

  113. came up to him.

  114. Tell us,

  115. by what authority

  116. you are doing these things,

  117. they said.

  118. Who gave you this authority?

  119. They were concerned about

  120. the things Jesus was doing in the temple.

  121. Well, what was Jesus doing in the temple?

  122. What were they so concerned about?

  123. Well, back up to chapter 19, verse 45.

  124. When Jesus entered the temple courts,

  125. he began to drive out those who were selling.

  126. Again, if you remember from last week,

  127. we learned it was Passover time.

  128. Thousands,

  129. tens of thousands of people

  130. are making their way to Jerusalem,

  131. to the temple.

  132. And as they arrived,

  133. they would go,

  134. if they didn't have a sacrifice with them,

  135. they would have to buy an animal

  136. for sacrifice.

  137. But to buy,

  138. you had to have the right currency,

  139. the right kind of money.

  140. So those who had come from outside Jerusalem,

  141. first had to go and exchange their money.

  142. Get the right kind of currency,

  143. and then they could buy

  144. an animal for sacrifice.

  145. The problem was,

  146. the temple officials,

  147. which was overseen by the Sanhedrin,

  148. this ruling council,

  149. had it all fixed in their favour.

  150. It was a way of making

  151. lots and lots of money.

  152. So Jesus confronts them head on

  153. with the authority of his word.

  154. Verse 46.

  155. It is written,

  156. he said to them,

  157. my house will be a house of prayer,

  158. but you have made it a den of robbers.

  159. Look at what Jesus says at the beginning there.

  160. He says,

  161. my house will be a house of prayer.

  162. Jesus is quoting here

  163. from Isaiah the prophet,

  164. who was looking forward to a day

  165. when all people,

  166. regardless of their race and religion,

  167. would be welcomed to come to God.

  168. That has been the ministry of Jesus

  169. all the way through Luke, isn't it?

  170. He's been welcoming outsiders.

  171. Here's more of what Isaiah said

  172. in Isaiah 56,

  173. where this quote comes from.

  174. And foreigners,

  175. outsiders,

  176. who bind themselves to the Lord,

  177. who trust in the Lord,

  178. these are the people

  179. I will bring to my holy mountain

  180. and give them joy

  181. in my house of prayer.

  182. This is why Jesus had come

  183. to welcome people in.

  184. But he has to confront

  185. these religious authorities.

  186. You're actually hindering people

  187. from coming.

  188. Look at the rest of verse 46.

  189. You've made it a den of robbers.

  190. This time,

  191. Jesus is quoting from

  192. Jeremiah the prophet,

  193. who is calling on the people

  194. to repent and

  195. turn around to God.

  196. Here's what Jeremiah said.

  197. You can follow the quote on the screen.

  198. This is what the Lord Almighty,

  199. the God of Israel,

  200. says,

  201. reform your ways

  202. and your actions.

  203. Will you steal and murder,

  204. commit adultery

  205. and follow other gods

  206. you have not known,

  207. and then come to me and say,

  208. we are safe,

  209. safe to do these detestable things?

  210. Has this house,

  211. referring to the temple,

  212. which bears my name,

  213. become a den of robbers to you?

  214. But I have been watching,

  215. declares the Lord.

  216. You see,

  217. Jesus is coming,

  218. confronting

  219. with the authority of his word.

  220. He speaks

  221. God's word,

  222. the words of the prophets,

  223. as if it was

  224. his very own word.

  225. And Jesus is saying

  226. to the people,

  227. you need to get in line

  228. with my word.

  229. You need to listen to me.

  230. reform your ways,

  231. repent,

  232. get on board

  233. with what I am doing,

  234. with my mission.

  235. So Jesus confronts,

  236. firstly,

  237. by his word,

  238. and second,

  239. he confronts us

  240. with his authority

  241. through his identity.

  242. Chapter 20,

  243. verse 2.

  244. Tell us,

  245. they said,

  246. by what authority

  247. you are doing these things,

  248. they said.

  249. Who gave you

  250. this authority?

  251. What right

  252. have you

  253. to be coming

  254. into our temple,

  255. telling us

  256. to reform

  257. and to change

  258. our lives?

  259. Who do you think

  260. you are?

  261. You're no member

  262. of the Sanhedrin.

  263. Where did you come from?

  264. Well,

  265. Jesus answers them

  266. in a strange way.

  267. It's really

  268. an expression,

  269. again,

  270. of his authority.

  271. Verse 3.

  272. He replied,

  273. well,

  274. I will also

  275. ask you

  276. a question.

  277. You have

  278. to answer

  279. me.

  280. Tell me,

  281. verse 4,

  282. John's baptism,

  283. was it from heaven

  284. or of human origin?

  285. If you remember

  286. back in Luke

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  287. chapter 3

  288. where we first

  289. met John the Baptist,

  290. he was baptizing

  291. people

  292. and as he

  293. baptized people,

  294. he was pointing

  295. people to Jesus

  296. and preparing

  297. people for Jesus.

  298. His message

  299. was crystal clear.

  300. John was saying,

  301. I'm not the Messiah,

  302. it's not me.

  303. Jesus is the Messiah.

  304. Jesus is God's

  305. chosen king

  306. and you need

  307. to be ready

  308. to meet him.

  309. Verse 5.

  310. So they discussed

  311. it amongst themselves

  312. and if we say,

  313. well, look,

  314. if we say

  315. that what John

  316. was saying

  317. was from heaven,

  318. then he's going

  319. to ask us,

  320. why didn't we

  321. believe John the Baptist?

  322. Why didn't we trust

  323. that Jesus

  324. is the Messiah?

  325. We don't want

  326. to do that.

  327. But,

  328. verse 6,

  329. what if we say,

  330. well,

  331. what John was saying

  332. is of human origin,

  333. it's all made up

  334. and Jesus really

  335. isn't the Messiah.

  336. Well,

  337. all the people

  338. are going to stone us

  339. and, I mean,

  340. look at all the stones

  341. around here.

  342. We're going to be

  343. in trouble

  344. because they

  345. were persuaded,

  346. the people knew

  347. that John was

  348. a prophet

  349. and he spoke

  350. the truth.

  351. So they chickened out,

  352. didn't they,

  353. verse 7?

  354. Oh, well,

  355. you know,

  356. we don't know

  357. where it was from,

  358. taking no sides

  359. other than

  360. to protect themselves.

  361. Well,

  362. Jesus said,

  363. verse 8,

  364. neither will I tell you

  365. by what authority

  366. I'm doing these things.

  367. You see,

  368. they do know

  369. what the correct answer is.

  370. They just don't want

  371. to admit to it.

  372. Jesus is the Messiah.

  373. He is their King.

  374. You see,

  375. while the Sanhedrin

  376. love to maintain

  377. this control

  378. and authority

  379. over the people

  380. and telling people

  381. who could come

  382. and who had to stay out,

  383. well,

  384. isn't that a little bit

  385. like us?

  386. We like to control

  387. our own lives.

  388. I am the ruler.

  389. I am the authority.

  390. I decide what is best

  391. for me and my life.

  392. None of us likes

  393. any one of us

  394. telling us what to do.

  395. It's my life

  396. and I will do

  397. as I please.

  398. But if Jesus

  399. is the Messiah,

  400. that means

  401. he has supreme

  402. authority over us

  403. and the way

  404. that authority

  405. is expressed

  406. to us

  407. is through

  408. his words.

  409. You see,

  410. we can't claim

  411. to be followers

  412. of Jesus

  413. and not listen

  414. to his word.

  415. You can't have Jesus

  416. and ignore his word.

  417. To accept Jesus

  418. as the Messiah

  419. means we must submit

  420. to what

  421. he has to say.

  422. And that implies

  423. that we are

  424. the kind of people

  425. who are spending time

  426. reading his word

  427. and applying it

  428. to our life.

  429. To go from

  430. week to week

  431. without even

  432. opening our Bibles

  433. is to say to Jesus,

  434. Jesus,

  435. keep your mouth shut.

  436. I don't want to hear

  437. anymore.

  438. Because to close

  439. our Bibles

  440. is to close

  441. our ears

  442. to what Jesus

  443. has to say.

  444. And to close

  445. our ears

  446. to what Jesus

  447. has to say

  448. is to shut

  449. Jesus out

  450. of our life.

  451. The point

  452. is so simple.

  453. We can't have

  454. Jesus without

  455. his word.

  456. And the evidence

  457. that we accept

  458. Jesus is that

  459. we welcome

  460. his word

  461. into our lives.

  462. Look back

  463. at verse 47.

  464. Look at the

  465. different responses

  466. of the people.

  467. Sorry,

  468. chapter 19,

  469. verse 47.

  470. Every day

  471. Jesus was teaching

  472. at the temple.

  473. But the chief

  474. priest,

  475. the teachers

  476. of the law

  477. and the leaders,

  478. that's that

  479. council again,

  480. among the people

  481. were trying

  482. to kill him,

  483. silence him.

  484. They didn't want

  485. to hear his voice.

  486. Yet they could

  487. not find a way

  488. to do it

  489. because all the

  490. people hung

  491. on his words.

  492. Which one

  493. best describes

  494. you?

  495. Do we want

  496. to silence

  497. Jesus?

  498. Or are we

  499. hanging on

  500. his every word,

  501. listening to

  502. what he has

  503. to say?

  504. You see,

  505. we can come

  506. every Sunday,

  507. read the Bible,

  508. listen to the

  509. Bible being taught.

  510. We can tick

  511. that little

  512. religious box

  513. and we can be

  514. like the people

  515. in Jeremiah's

  516. time who said,

  517. do you remember?

  518. We are safe.

  519. They do their

  520. little bit of

  521. worship and

  522. kind of safe

  523. within the walls

  524. of the temple.

  525. God's not going

  526. to do anything

  527. to us.

  528. We're his people.

  529. We're good

  530. religious people.

  531. No,

  532. says Jesus,

  533. stop hiding

  534. behind that

  535. veneer of

  536. religiosity.

  537. Reform your

  538. ways.

  539. Get in line

  540. with my

  541. word.

  542. For I am

  543. your king.

  544. So first,

  545. Jesus confronts

  546. us with

  547. his authority.

  548. Second,

  549. here's the

  550. second big

  551. idea,

  552. Jesus confronts

  553. us with

  554. our response

  555. to his

  556. authority.

  557. He confronts

  558. us with our

  559. response to

  560. his authority.

  561. Look down

  562. at verse 9.

  563. He went

  564. on to tell

  565. the people

  566. this parable.

  567. Now,

  568. you'd imagine,

  569. you know,

  570. he's come

  571. into the

  572. temple grounds.

  573. This is the

  574. home turf

  575. for the

  576. Sanhedrin.

  577. They're the

  578. rulers.

  579. They're the

  580. ones in

  581. authority.

  582. They have

  583. the power.

  584. They're trying

  585. to kill

  586. him.

  587. You would

  588. think Jesus

  589. would kind

  590. of like

  591. back off

  592. a little

  593. bit at

  594. this stage.

  595. But no,

  596. he goes

  597. right for

  598. the jugular.

  599. Look down

  600. at verse

  601. 19.

  602. Here we get

  603. the conclusion

  604. of the

  605. parable.

  606. The teachers

  607. of the law

  608. and the chief

  609. priests

  610. looked for

  611. a way to

  612. arrest him

  613. immediately

  614. because they

  615. knew he

  616. had spoken

  617. this parable

  618. against them.

  619. Jesus is

  620. confronting

  621. full on.

  622. He's not

  623. backing off.

  624. So what do

  625. we learn

  626. from this

  627. parable?

  628. Well,

  629. first,

  630. fruitful

  631. obedience.

  632. Let's read

  633. verse 9.

  634. He went

  635. on to tell

  636. the people

  637. this parable.

  638. A man

  639. planted a

  640. vineyard,

  641. rented it

  642. to some

  643. farmers,

  644. and went

  645. away for

  646. a long

  647. time.

  648. Now,

  649. when we

  650. read about

  651. the vineyard,

  652. it's a

  653. picture,

  654. it's picture

  655. language for

  656. God's people.

  657. So let me

  658. show you.

  659. If you go

  660. back to

  661. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  662. 5,

  663. so keep

  664. your finger

  665. in Luke

  666. 20 and

  667. jump all

  668. the way

  669. back to

  670. Isaiah

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  671. chapter 5.

  672. So as

  673. Jesus starts

  674. talking about

  675. vineyard,

  676. it brings

  677. with us

  678. a certain

  679. picture and

  680. image.

  681. Isaiah

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  682. chapter 5

  683. and verse

  684. 1.

  685. Isaiah

    Isaiah 5:1

  686. 5 verse

  687. 1.

  688. So here

  689. it is.

  690. It's really

  691. speaking about

  692. God's people.

  693. He says,

  694. I will sing

  695. for the

  696. one I

  697. love a

  698. song about

  699. his vineyard.

  700. My loved

  701. one had a

  702. vineyard on

  703. a fertile

  704. hillside.

  705. He dug

  706. it up,

  707. cleared it

  708. of stones,

  709. planted it

  710. with the

  711. choicest

  712. vines.

  713. He built

  714. a watch

  715. tower in

  716. it and

  717. cut out

  718. a wine

  719. press as

  720. well.

  721. Then he

  722. looked for

  723. a crop

  724. of good

  725. grapes.

  726. but it

  727. yielded

  728. only bad

  729. fruit.

  730. Down to

  731. verse 7.

  732. The

  733. vineyard of

  734. the Lord

  735. Almighty

  736. is the

  737. nation

  738. of Israel,

  739. the people

  740. of Judah,

  741. and the

  742. vines he

  743. delighted in.

  744. And he

  745. looked for

  746. justice but

  747. saw bloodshed,

  748. for righteousness

  749. but heard

  750. cries of

  751. distress.

  752. Now let's

  753. go back to

  754. Luke 20,

  755. back to the

  756. parable.

  757. You see,

  758. God,

  759. just as

  760. the time

  761. in Isaiah

  762. was looking

  763. for fruitful

  764. obedience.

  765. People who

  766. would listen

  767. to the

  768. words of

  769. the prophets,

  770. those who

  771. would obey

  772. it,

  773. those who

  774. would take

  775. God's word

  776. on board,

  777. and would

  778. be changed,

  779. the fruit

  780. of obedience.

  781. Chapter

  782. 20,

  783. verse 10.

  784. So at

  785. harvest time,

  786. he sent

  787. a servant

  788. to the

  789. tenants,

  790. so they

  791. would give

  792. him some

  793. of the

  794. fruit of

  795. the vineyard.

  796. But the

  797. tenants beat

  798. him and

  799. sent him

  800. away empty

  801. handed.

  802. Three times

  803. the owner

  804. sends his

  805. servants,

  806. and each

  807. time they're

  808. rejected.

  809. And Jesus'

  810. point is clear

  811. to them.

  812. Look,

  813. God has

  814. been so

  815. patient and

  816. persistent

  817. with you.

  818. He has

  819. spoken his

  820. word to

  821. you through

  822. his servants,

  823. the prophets,

  824. time after

  825. time after

  826. time.

  827. People like

  828. Isaiah,

  829. people like

  830. Jeremiah,

  831. people like

  832. Elijah,

  833. they've come

  834. time after

  835. time.

  836. But you

  837. will not

  838. listen to

  839. what God

  840. has to

  841. say.

  842. And to

  843. drive the

  844. point home,

  845. Jesus makes

  846. it very

  847. personal.

  848. Verse 13.

  849. Then the

  850. owner of the

  851. vineyard said,

  852. what shall

  853. I do?

  854. I will

  855. send my

  856. son whom

  857. I love.

  858. Perhaps

  859. they will

  860. respect him.

  861. But when

  862. the tenants

  863. saw him,

  864. they talked

  865. the matter

  866. over.

  867. This is

  868. the heir,

  869. they said.

  870. Let's

  871. kill him

  872. and the

  873. inheritance

  874. will be

  875. ours.

  876. So they

  877. threw him

  878. out of

  879. the vineyard

  880. and killed

  881. him.

  882. You see,

  883. Jesus,

  884. as he speaks

  885. this parable,

  886. is making

  887. it quite

  888. clear that

  889. he is

  890. the ultimate

  891. prophet.

  892. He is

  893. the very

  894. word of

  895. God.

  896. He is

  897. God's

  898. king.

  899. I am

  900. here to

  901. speak God's

  902. word to

  903. you,

  904. and I

  905. am giving

  906. you time

  907. to repent,

  908. to change

  909. of your

  910. ways.

  911. But rather

  912. than accept

  913. my authority

  914. and listen

  915. to me,

  916. you will

  917. kill me.

  918. God is

  919. so patient,

  920. so

  921. persistent,

  922. longing for

  923. fruitful

  924. obedience from

  925. his people.

  926. But if we

  927. fail to

  928. respond, if we

  929. fail to take

  930. his word on

  931. board and

  932. get in line

  933. with his

  934. vision,

  935. we will

  936. face his

  937. judgment.

  938. judgment.

  939. So the

  940. second thing

  941. we learn

  942. from this

  943. parable is

  944. divine judgment.

  945. Let's pick it up at the

  946. end of verse 15.

  947. What then will the

  948. owner of the

  949. vineyard do to

  950. them?

  951. He will come

  952. and kill those

  953. tenants and

  954. give the

  955. vineyard to

  956. others.

  957. It's so

  958. clear, isn't

  959. it?

  960. If you

  961. continue to

  962. ignore my

  963. authority, if

  964. you persist in

  965. closing your

  966. ears to my

  967. word, then

  968. God will

  969. ignore you and

  970. close his

  971. ears to you.

  972. Verse 16.

  973. He will come

  974. and kill those

  975. tenants and

  976. give the

  977. vineyard to

  978. others.

  979. The opportunity

  980. that you have

  981. been given is

  982. going to be

  983. taken away and

  984. is going to be

  985. given to

  986. someone else.

  987. Taken away from

  988. those whom God

  989. had called, said

  990. you will be my

  991. people.

  992. Of course, those

  993. who are his

  994. people, the

  995. evidence, are

  996. those who

  997. accept the

  998. son.

  999. who welcome

  1000. his word.

  1001. You see, we

  1002. might have had a

  1003. lifetime of being

  1004. taught God's

  1005. word.

  1006. We might have

  1007. scripture

  1008. memorized.

  1009. We could have

  1010. been raised in a

  1011. Christian home where

  1012. we had parents who

  1013. taught us, had the

  1014. privilege of being

  1015. in a good church

  1016. family.

  1017. All signs of God's

  1018. amazing grace,

  1019. his desire and

  1020. longing that we love

  1021. him and obey

  1022. him.

  1023. But yet, as the

  1024. years have gone

  1025. by, it's as if

  1026. our hearts have

  1027. become more

  1028. calloused and

  1029. more hardened to

  1030. God's word.

  1031. I used to read

  1032. God's word, but

  1033. now I have no

  1034. time.

1035. I used to listen to

  1036. the sermon and

  1037. engage, but

  1038. well now I

  1039. can't wait for it

  1040. to be over.

  1041. I used to

  1042. enjoy the

  1043. challenge of

  1044. what other

  1045. people had to

  1046. say and the

  1047. intimacy of

  1048. meeting God

  1049. in his word,

  1050. but not for

  1051. me.

  1052. Slowly but

  1053. subtly, the

  1054. rejection of

  1055. God's authority

  1056. in our life.

  1057. Well, if

  1058. that's you this

  1059. morning, listen

  1060. very carefully.

  1061. God's

  1062. persistence and

  1063. patience will

  1064. one day come to

  1065. an end.

  1066. The

  1067. opportunities that

  1068. we have been

  1069. given will be

  1070. taken away,

  1071. will be given to

  1072. someone else.

  1073. The point was

  1074. not lost on his

  1075. hearers.

  1076. Look at the

  1077. end of verse

  1078. 16.

  1079. When the

  1080. people heard

  1081. this, they

  1082. said, God

  1083. forbid.

  1084. Oh, that

  1085. would never

  1086. ever happen

  1087. to me.

  1088. I would

  1089. never ever

  1090. ignore God's

  1091. word.

  1092. Not me.

  1093. It's a

  1094. sobering

  1095. thought.

  1096. Jesus

  1097. confronts us

  1098. with our

  1099. response to

  1100. his authority.

  1101. So,

  1102. what

  1103. what is

  1104. my response

  1105. to the

  1106. authority of

  1107. Jesus?

  1108. What is

  1109. our response?

  1110. This is

  1111. deeply

  1112. personal.

  1113. Look at

  1114. verse 17.

  1115. Jesus

  1116. looked

  1117. directly at

  1118. them.

  1119. It's like

  1120. he's

  1121. eyeballed

  1122. them,

  1123. staring

  1124. intently.

  1125. A

  1126. dramatic

  1127. pause.

  1128. Nobody's

  1129. speaking.

  1130. They're just

  1131. looking at

  1132. each other.

  1133. This was

  1134. pointed and

  1135. personal.

  1136. Jesus

  1137. demands a

  1138. response.

  1139. He

  1140. asked them,

  1141. then what

  1142. is the

  1143. meaning of

  1144. that which

  1145. is written?

  1146. The

  1147. stone the

  1148. builders

  1149. rejected

  1150. has become

  1151. the

  1152. cornerstone.

  1153. Well,

  1154. we need to

  1155. do some

  1156. thinking here.

  1157. The imagery

  1158. has changed,

  1159. hasn't it?

  1160. We've gone

  1161. from the

  1162. vineyard and

  1163. now we're

  1164. in a

  1165. construction

  1166. site.

  1167. But Jesus

  1168. wants us to

  1169. make a

  1170. connection

  1171. between the

  1172. two.

  1173. The stone

  1174. that we

  1175. read about

  1176. here in

  1177. the parable

  1178. is also

  1179. like the

  1180. sun in

  1181. the parable.

  1182. Both have

  1183. been rejected.

  1184. Back at

  1185. verse 15,

  1186. the sun

  1187. is thrown

  1188. out and

  1189. killed.

  1190. He's

  1191. rejected.

  1192. The stone

  1193. in verse

  1194. 17,

  1195. well,

  1196. the builders

  1197. have rejected

  1198. that.

  1199. But just

  1200. as the

  1201. stone,

  1202. verse 17,

  1203. becomes the

  1204. cornerstone,

  1205. the cornerstone

  1206. was that

  1207. big foundation

  1208. stone on

  1209. which everything

  1210. is built

  1211. on and

  1212. holds everything

  1213. together.

  1214. It's the

  1215. most important

  1216. stone.

  1217. Remove that

  1218. stone and

  1219. there's

  1220. nothing.

  1221. Well,

  1222. he was

  1223. saying,

  1224. so the

  1225. sun has

  1226. become the

  1227. foundation,

  1228. the most

  1229. important

  1230. one.

  1231. And in

  1232. case we're

  1233. missing the

  1234. point,

  1235. Jesus is

  1236. saying,

  1237. listen,

  1238. I am

  1239. that

  1240. sun and

  1241. I am

  1242. that

  1243. stone.

  1244. You may

  1245. reject me,

  1246. you may

  1247. throw me

  1248. out,

  1249. you may

  1250. kill me,

  1251. and in

  1252. four days

  1253. time,

  1254. Jesus

  1255. will be

  1256. killed,

  1257. executed

  1258. on the

  1259. cross with

  1260. the Sanhedrin

  1261. at the

  1262. heart of

  1263. it.

  1264. But I

  1265. will rise

  1266. again.

  1267. I will

  1268. rise again.

  1269. You may

  1270. discard me,

  1271. you may

  1272. have no

  1273. use for

  1274. me,

  1275. you may

  1276. choose

  1277. another

  1278. foundation

  1279. to build

  1280. your life

  1281. upon,

  1282. but mark

  1283. this,

  1284. I am

  1285. that

  1286. cornerstone

  1287. to build

  1288. your life

  1289. on the

  1290. authority

  1291. of my

  1292. word and

  1293. you will

  1294. be saved.

  1295. But reject

  1296. my authority

  1297. and my

  1298. word,

  1299. it will

  1300. be like

  1301. removing

  1302. that

  1303. foundation,

  1304. that

  1305. cornerstone

  1306. and it

  1307. will come

  1308. toppling

  1309. down with

  1310. a crash.

  1311. Verse 18,

  1312. everyone who

  1313. falls on

  1314. that stone

  1315. will be

  1316. broken to

  1317. pieces.

  1318. Anyone on

  1319. whom it

  1320. falls

  1321. will be

  1322. crushed.

  1323. Jesus

  1324. will have

  1325. the last

  1326. word.

  1327. His

  1328. authority

  1329. reigns

  1330. supreme.

  1331. And one

  1332. day we

  1333. will all

  1334. have to

  1335. stand

  1336. before the

  1337. risen

  1338. Jesus

  1339. and give

  1340. an account

  1341. of our

  1342. life to

  1343. him.

  1344. Nobody

  1345. else

  1346. but us

  1347. and him.

  1348. There is

  1349. only one

  1350. authority,

  1351. only one

  1352. true word

  1353. and that

  1354. is Jesus

  1355. the Messiah.

  1356. You cannot

  1357. split

  1358. Jesus

  1359. and his

  1360. words.

  1361. You cannot

  1362. say,

  1363. oh I

  1364. like

  1365. Jesus

  1366. but shut

  1367. my ears

  1368. to what

  1369. he says.

  1370. Submit

  1371. to his

  1372. word and

  1373. you will

  1374. live.

  1375. You will

  1376. know life.

  1377. You will

  1378. enjoy life

  1379. the way it

  1380. is meant

  1381. to.

  1382. Reject

  1383. his word

  1384. and you

  1385. will be

  1386. crushed.

  1387. There is

  1388. just one

  1389. authority.

  1390. What is

  1391. our response

  1392. to him

  1393. today?

  1394. As we

  1395. close,

  1396. we are

  1397. going to

  1398. pray.

  1399. I would

  1400. like us to

  1401. turn to

  1402. those words

  1403. in Hebrews

  1404. that we

  1405. read at

  1406. the beginning.

  1407. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1408. chapter 4,

  1409. we are

  1410. going to

  1411. use it

  1412. as our

  1413. prayer as

  1414. we close.

  1415. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1416. chapter 4.

  1417. If somebody

  1418. could help

  1419. me again

  1420. with a

  1421. page number

  1422. that would

  1423. be helpful.

  1424. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4:12

  1425. chapter 4,

  1426. verse 12.

  1427. So as

  1428. we read

  1429. it, let

  1430. us hear

  1431. God speak

  1432. to us

  1433. and ask

  1434. him to

  1435. do an

  1436. effective

  1437. work in

  1438. our life

  1439. and that

  1440. it might

  1441. lead us

  1442. to run

  1443. to Jesus.

  1444. Chapter 4,

  1445. verse 12.

  1446. For the

  1447. word of

  1448. God is

  1449. alive

  1450. and active,

  1451. sharper

  1452. than any

  1453. double-edged

  1454. sword.

  1455. It

  1456. penetrates

  1457. even to

  1458. dividing soul

  1459. and spirit,

  1460. joints and

  1461. marrow.

  1462. it judges

  1463. the thoughts

  1464. and attitudes

  1465. of my

  1466. heart.

  1467. Nothing

  1468. in all

  1469. creation

  1470. is hidden

  1471. from God's

  1472. sight.

  1473. Everything

  1474. is uncovered,

  1475. laid bare

  1476. before the

  1477. eyes of

  1478. him to

  1479. whom we

  1480. must give

  1481. an account.

  1482. Verse

  1483. 16.

  1484. Let us

  1485. then

  1486. approach

  1487. God's

  1488. throne of

  1489. grace,

  1490. with

  1491. confidence

  1492. so that

  1493. we may

  1494. receive

  1495. mercy

  1496. and find

  1497. grace to

  1498. help us

  1499. in our

  1500. time of

  1501. need.

  1502. There's

  1503. pain

  1504. in being

  1505. cut open

  1506. but there

  1507. is great

  1508. healing

  1509. as we

  1510. come to

  1511. Jesus,

  1512. the true

  1513. word,

  1514. who

  1515. fills our

  1516. life with

  1517. grace and

  1518. mercy.

  1519. What a

  1520. king.

  1521. Let us

  1522. pray.

  1523. Father, thank

  1524. you for your

  1525. word to us

  1526. today.

  1527. We

  1528. recognize that

  1529. it is hard,

  1530. it is

  1531. painful.

  1532. we submit

  1533. ourselves to

  1534. you afresh

  1535. and pray

  1536. that you

  1537. would give

  1538. us open

  1539. hearts and

  1540. open ears

  1541. to your

  1542. word, to

  1543. the Lord

  1544. Jesus,

  1545. and accept

  1546. his authority

  1547. in our

  1548. lives.

  1549. We pray

  1550. this in

  1551. Jesus' name.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.

  1554. We're

  1555. going to

  1556. sing,

  1557. which is

  1558. another

  1559. prayer,

  1560. and a

  1561. way to

  1562. encourage

  1563. us as

  1564. we sing

  1565. this, we

  1566. sing to

  1567. each other,

  1568. as we

  1569. pray to

  1570. God, that

  1571. as we go

  1572. into this

  1573. week, that

  1574. we don't

  1575. just close

  1576. the Bible

  1577. over, close

  1578. our ears to

  1579. the Lord,

  1580. but go

  1581. into this

  1582. week wanting

  1583. to hear from

  1584. him and

  1585. to live our

  1586. lives as

  1587. followers of

  1588. him.

  1589. Speak, O

  1590. Lord, as

  1591. we come to

  1592. you to

  1593. receive the

  1594. food of

  1595. your holy

  1596. word.

  1597. Let's

  1598. stand as

  1599. we sing.
