  1. On reaching the place, he said to them,

  2. Pray that you will not fall into temptation.

  3. He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,

  4. Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me,

  5. yet not my will, but yours be done.

  6. An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

  7. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly,

  8. and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

  9. When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples,

  10. he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.

  11. Why are you sleeping? he asked them.

  12. Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation.

  13. Well, we're going to pray now.

  14. So, let's do that together.

  15. Father, we pray that we will not fall into temptation.

  16. That as we hear your word,

  17. we would not be tempted to look away from you

  18. and to trust ourselves or other things,

  19. but that we would trust the truth of your word.

  20. help us that we would obey your word.

  21. And we ask that you would change us

  22. and make us more like Jesus.

  23. We ask it in your name.

  24. Amen.

  25. Well, it's now Thursday evening.

  26. By mid-afternoon tomorrow,

  27. Jesus will be beaten, mocked,

  28. brutally nailed to a wooden cross and left to die.

  29. These last few hours are spent with his closest disciples.

  30. They've just celebrated the Passover meal together,

  31. but there's a heaviness and there's a sadness in their hearts.

  32. Jesus has been talking about denial,

  33. betrayal,

  34. and death.

  35. Jesus, too, is struggling.

  36. So, verse 39,

  37. Jesus went out as usual.

  38. This was his common practice to go and pray.

  39. So, Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives

  40. to a familiar spot with his disciples,

  41. a little olive grove,

  42. and his disciples followed him.

  43. You see, as Jesus makes his way to the cross,

  44. as he gets closer to the cross,

  45. disciples follow him.

  46. You see, it's only as we follow Jesus to the cross

  47. that we begin to see our need of the cross.

  48. So, here's an invitation for us all

  49. to step out and to follow Jesus

  50. as he makes his way to the cross.

  51. Three things we're going to see as we follow.

  52. First,

  53. we all fail in temptation.

  54. We all fail in temptation.

  55. Look at verse 40.

  56. On reaching the place,

  57. this little olive grove,

  58. he said to them,

  59. pray that you will not fall into temptation.

  60. And then Jesus goes off on his own

  61. and he prays,

  62. and when he is finished,

  63. he comes back to his disciples,

  64. and verse 46,

  65. why are you sleeping?

  66. He asked them.

  67. Get up and pray

  68. so that you will not fall into temptation.

  69. Why this persistence?

  70. Why this reminder?

  71. Pray that you will not fall into temptation.

  72. temptation.

  73. Well, Jesus knows that temptation will come.

  74. He's already told them that's what's going to happen.

  75. Look back a few verses to verse 31.

  76. Here Jesus is addressing

  77. Peter or Simon as he's referred to here.

  78. Simon, Simon,

  79. Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.

  80. A temptation is going to come upon you

  81. to see if you will stand.

  82. It's a striking picture,

  83. that image of Satan wanting to sift you.

  84. This newly harvested wheat is being sifted.

  85. It's being shaken

  86. to separate the good grain from the useless husk.

  87. So Satan is out to shake

  88. and destroy the faith of the disciples.

  89. So as Jesus makes his way to the cross,

  90. will they follow him?

  91. Or are they going to abandon him?

  92. And if you're a disciple today,

  93. a follower of Jesus,

  94. you will know that temptation also comes to you.

  95. Perhaps it's different for each one of us.

  96. Maybe it's a particular temptation

  97. to lose your cool

  98. or to say words that you shouldn't say.

  99. Maybe it's a temptation

  100. to never admit that you're wrong.

  101. Maybe it's a temptation

  102. with particular addictions.

  103. Maybe pornography.

  104. Maybe it's a temptation

  105. to be buying things that we don't need

  106. and looking for our comfort in shopping.

  107. Well, you see,

  108. we've all got a common enemy.

  109. His name is Satan.

  110. And his one aim and purpose

  111. is to keep people like us

  112. from following Jesus.

  113. And when that pressure comes on,

  114. will we resist temptation

  115. temptation?

  116. Or will we fall into temptation?

  117. The problem is,

  118. and that's certainly my experience,

  119. the problem is

  120. we all fall into temptation.

  121. Now, temptation is not sinful in itself.

  122. We'll see that Jesus is tempted.

  123. He already faced Satan in the wilderness.

  124. So, temptation is not wrong.

  125. The problem is,

  126. we don't resist it

  127. or reject it.

  128. We willfully enter into it.

  129. We fall into following our own desires.

  130. Just like Adam and Eve did in the garden.

  131. Just like the disciples did.

  132. We fall into temptation.

  133. Instead of saying,

  134. God's will be done,

  135. we say,

  136. my will be done.

  137. And sadly,

  138. the evidence is there to

  139. see in our own lives

  140. and all around us.

  141. Broken relationships.

  142. Conflict with our spouse.

  143. Divisions in our families.

  144. All because we fail to resist.

  145. And we fall into temptation.

  146. So the first thing we see

  147. as we follow Jesus to the cross is,

  148. well, it's uncomfortable

  149. because we're confronted

  150. with our own failure.

  151. We fail.

  152. We fall.

  153. So what do we do?

  154. Well, thankfully,

  155. Jesus deals with our failure.

  156. As we follow Jesus,

  157. and that's what we're to do,

  158. we're to follow him

  159. to the olive grove.

  160. We're to watch Jesus

  161. face his own temptation.

  162. We're to listen to Jesus

  163. as he prays.

  164. And as we do that,

  165. we will see our need,

  166. our desperate need

  167. for Jesus.

  168. First,

  169. the suffering of Jesus.

  170. As Jesus begins to pray,

  171. something has gripped him

  172. with fear.

  173. Verse 44.

  174. And being in anguish,

  175. he prayed more earnestly.

  176. Jesus is in physical

  177. and emotional agony.

  178. It's not what we always expect

  179. of Jesus.

  180. Jesus is always in control.

  181. He's always strong,

  182. always confident.

  183. Jesus is the fearless one.

  184. But this time,

  185. it's different.

  186. Jesus is so overwhelmed,

  187. verse 43,

  188. that an angel from heaven

  189. appeared to him

  190. and strengthened him.

  191. The God-man,

  192. the creator of the universe,

  193. is weak

  194. and needs strengthened.

  195. In fact,

  196. he is in so much turmoil.

  197. Look at verse 44 again.

  198. Being in anguish,

  199. he prayed more earnestly,

  200. and his sweat

  201. was like drops of blood

  202. falling to the ground.

  203. When you or I get scared,

  204. we might shake or stutter.

  205. But Jesus is so overcome

  206. with fear,

  207. he starts to literally

  208. sweat blood.

  209. Jesus is in great physical

  210. and emotional agony.

  211. Well, what is it

  212. that is causing Jesus

  213. so much anguish?

  214. Well, look back to verse 41.

  215. Jesus withdrew

  216. about a stone's throw

  217. beyond them,

  218. so just enough

  219. to be private in prayer.

  220. Father,

  221. knelt down and prayed,

  222. Father,

  223. if you are willing,

  224. take this cup

  225. from me.

  226. The cup.

  227. That's what's causing

  228. Jesus so much turmoil.

  229. It's not a literal cup,

  230. it's a metaphorical cup.

  231. That means Jesus

  232. is going to face

  233. something so terrible.

  234. Jesus will have to

  235. endure something

  236. so awful.

  237. He pleads with his Father,

  238. take this cup

  239. from me.

  240. Now, for us to understand

  241. what this cup is,

  242. to know what it is

  243. that Jesus is going to face,

  244. we need to read

  245. from the book of Jeremiah.

  246. So, if you keep your finger

  247. in Luke 22,

  248. go back to Jeremiah,

    Jeremiah 25 chapter mention

  249. chapter 25.

  250. If you're using

  251. the red-covered Bible,

  252. it's on page 786.

  253. 786,

  254. Jeremiah 25,

    Jeremiah 25:15

  255. verse 15.

  256. And in this section,

  257. God had been saying

  258. to his people that,

  259. well, you've been wandering,

  260. you've been rebelling,

  261. a judgment is going to come,

  262. you are going to be taken over

  263. by the Babylonians

  264. and be taken into exile.

  265. So, he's talking to the people

  266. about what happens

  267. when we turn against God,

  268. against the evil

  269. and wickedness.

  270. So, Jeremiah,

    Jeremiah 25:15

  271. chapter 25,

  272. verse 15.

  273. This is what the Lord,

  274. the God of Israel,

  275. said to me.

  276. Take from my hand

  277. this cup filled

  278. with the wine of my wrath,

  279. and make all the nations

  280. to whom I send you

  281. drink it.

  282. When they drink it,

  283. they will stagger

  284. and go mad

  285. because of the sword

  286. I will send among them.

  287. Now go down to verse 28.

  288. But if they refuse

  289. to take the cup

  290. from your hand

  291. and drink it,

  292. tell them,

  293. this is what the Lord

  294. Almighty says,

  295. you must drink it.

  296. See, I am beginning

  297. to bring disaster

  298. on the city

  299. that bears my name.

  300. And will you indeed

  301. go unpunished?

  302. You will not

  303. go unpunished.

  304. For I am calling

  305. down a sword

  306. on all who live

  307. on the earth,

  308. declares

  309. the Lord

  310. Almighty.

  311. Terrifying.

  312. this cup

  313. is not

  314. literal.

  315. It's a symbol

  316. of God's wrath,

  317. His anger.

  318. It's a dramatic

  319. picture of God's

  320. judgment,

  321. the punishment

  322. that God will

  323. pour out on those

  324. who live sinful lives,

  325. who willingly

  326. fall into temptation

  327. and say,

  328. my will be done.

  329. So as Jesus

  330. prays,

  331. He cries out

  332. to His Father,

  333. if you are

  334. willing,

  335. take this

  336. cup

  337. from Me.

  338. You see,

  339. it's not death

  340. that Jesus fears.

  341. He knew He was

  342. going to Jerusalem

  343. to die.

  344. It's judgment

  345. that He fears.

  346. Jesus knows

  347. that when He dies,

  348. He will have

  349. to drink the cup.

  350. He will have

  351. to face God's

  352. wrath,

  353. His punishment.

  354. Let's go back

  355. to Luke 22.

  356. Now you might

  357. not like the idea

  358. of God being angry.

  359. It might not fit

  360. into your understanding

  361. of God.

  362. Maybe you just

  363. like to think

  364. of God being

  365. loving and kind

  366. and nice.

  367. Well, let's

  368. understand that

  369. God's anger

  370. is not like ours.

  371. He doesn't lose

  372. His temper.

  373. He doesn't have

  374. uncontrolled fits

  375. of rage.

  376. No, God's anger

  377. is an expression

  378. of His personal

  379. hate for all

  380. the injustice

  381. and all the evil

  382. that there is

  383. in the world.

  384. In other words,

  385. it is God's

  386. just,

  387. fair,

  388. and reasoned

  389. response to sin.

  390. And we might

  391. be content

  392. that God

  393. is angry

  394. with other

  395. people and

  396. all the bad

  397. people,

  398. but what about

  399. me?

  400. What about

  401. you?

  402. Has God

  403. got a right

  404. to be angry

  405. with me?

  406. Do you think

  407. God should just

  408. turn a blind eye

  409. to all the times

  410. that I fall

  411. into temptation

  412. and say,

  413. Johnny's will

  414. be done,

  415. not God's?

  416. Do we expect

  417. God to put up

  418. with our sinful

  419. lives?

  420. All the lies,

  421. the crosswords,

  422. the hurts

  423. that we cause,

  424. the selfishness,

  425. the disobedience,

  426. and just say,

  427. you know what,

  428. it doesn't matter.

  429. Of course it

  430. matters.

  431. It's personal

  432. to God.

  433. Do you think

  434. God is just

  435. to look back

  436. at all the wars

  437. that are going on?

  438. The trafficking

  439. of children

  440. into the sex

  441. industry?

  442. It doesn't

  443. matter.

  444. Just let

  445. people do

  446. what they like.

  447. It's okay.

  448. It does

  449. matter.

  450. We deserve

  451. to face

  452. God's judgment.

  453. So what are we

  454. going to do

  455. about it?

  456. Well,

  457. second,

  458. the obedience

  459. of Jesus.

  460. Listen again

  461. to what Jesus

  462. prays in

  463. verse 42.

  464. Father,

  465. here's the

  466. cry of agony.

  467. Father,

  468. if you are

  469. willing,

  470. take this

  471. cup from

  472. me.

  473. Jesus is

  474. fearing what

  475. is ahead.

  476. His sweat

  477. is like

  478. drops of

  479. blood.

  480. He's in

  481. emotional

  482. anger.

  483. In a few

  484. hours'

  485. time,

  486. Jesus is

  487. going to

  488. be nailed

  489. to a

  490. cross.

  491. But he

  492. knows it's

  493. not just

  494. physical death

  495. that he

  496. faces.

  497. It's God's

  498. judgment

  499. that he

  500. faces.

  501. So as

  502. Jesus

  503. prays to

  504. his

  505. father,

  506. it's as

  507. if he's

  508. looking into

  509. the cup.

  510. He sees

  511. something of

  512. what lies

  513. ahead.

  514. He knows

  515. that he

  516. will be

  517. separated

  518. from his

  519. father.

  520. He knows

  521. he will

  522. have to

  523. suffer

  524. hell.

  525. This is

  526. not some

  527. rehearsed

  528. play,

  529. some

  530. acted

  531. out drama

  532. where

  533. Jesus

  534. has been

  535. before.

  536. This is

  537. the real

  538. temptation

  539. that Jesus,

  540. the God

  541. man,

  542. is facing.

  543. Father,

  544. is there

  545. some other

  546. way that

  547. we can

  548. do this?

  549. Father,

  550. can you

  551. take the

  552. cross away

  553. from me?

  554. I don't

  555. want to

  556. go through

  557. with this.

  558. You see,

  559. we mustn't

  560. think that

  561. Jesus is

  562. some kind

  563. of robotic

  564. person that

  565. just does

  566. without any

  567. thinking.

  568. Jesus was

  569. not immune

  570. to temptation.

  571. temptation.

  572. He might

  573. have

  574. experienced

  575. all the

  576. kinds of

  577. temptations

  578. that we

  579. have

  580. experienced,

  581. but he

  582. experienced

  583. them in

  584. a way that

  585. just built

  586. up one

  587. after the

  588. other.

  589. The

  590. pressure

  591. increased

  592. more and

  593. more and

  594. more.

  595. But as

  596. the writer

  597. to the

  598. Hebrew

  599. tells us,

  600. Jesus was

  601. tempted in

  602. every way

  603. just as

  604. we are,

  605. but he

  606. did not

  607. sin.

  608. He did

  609. not cave

  610. in under

  611. the pressure.

  612. He did

  613. not bow.

  614. Verse 42,

  615. Father, if

  616. you are

  617. willing, take

  618. this cup

  619. from me,

  620. yet not

  621. my will,

  622. but yours

  623. be done.

  624. Jesus

  625. resists

  626. temptation

  627. and in

  628. obedience to

  629. his Father

  630. he prays.

  631. Not my

  632. will,

  633. your will

  634. be done.

  635. Not my

  636. wants,

  637. but Father,

  638. what you

  639. want.

  640. Not my

  641. desires,

  642. but Father,

  643. what will

  644. please you.

  645. How easily

  646. we fall

  647. into temptation.

  648. How willingly

  649. we just so

  650. quickly fall.

  651. It comes

  652. upon us,

  653. the pressure

  654. builds,

  655. we fail

  656. to resist

  657. it.

  658. Jesus

  659. is the

  660. only one

  661. who stands

  662. strong in

  663. the face

  664. of temptation.

  665. The only

  666. man

  667. who has

  668. resisted.

  669. God's

  670. God's

  671. is the

  672. God's

  673. God's

  674. judgment

  675. is to

  676. drink that

  677. cup for

  678. us.

  679. In other

  680. words,

  681. he has

  682. come to

  683. prepare himself

  684. through prayer,

  685. to take

  686. that place

  687. for you

  688. and me

  689. and to

  690. drink the

  691. punishment

  692. that you

  693. and I

  694. deserve.

  695. He exchanges

  696. places with

  697. us on the

  698. cross.

  699. You see,

  700. Jesus never

  701. fell into

  702. temptation.

  703. Jesus always

  704. resisted.

  705. He never

  706. disobeyed.

  707. He always

  708. obeyed his

  709. father.

  710. He is the

  711. only one

  712. free from

  713. God's

  714. judgment,

  715. the only

  716. perfect man

  717. who doesn't

  718. deserve it.

  719. But yet in

  720. love he comes

  721. to this world,

  722. he comes to

  723. people like you

  724. and me and

  725. he says,

  726. I will take

  727. all your

  728. disobedience

  729. on myself.

  730. Jesus is

  731. treated on

  732. the cross as

  733. the one who

  734. has fallen

  735. into temptation.

  736. He makes

  737. my sin his

  738. own so

  739. that I can

  740. be free

  741. from what

  742. I deserve.

  743. Imagine

  744. you're holding

  745. that cup.

  746. It's

  747. symbolic,

  748. I know,

  749. but as

  750. you look

  751. into it,

  752. you see

  753. this is

  754. God's

  755. judgment.

  756. You get

  757. a glimpse

  758. of hell

  759. itself.

  760. And to

  761. drink it,

  762. you know,

  763. will be

  764. separation

  765. from God

  766. for all

  767. eternity.

  768. Nothing,

  769. there's no

  770. beauty,

  771. there's no

  772. goodness,

  773. no laughter,

  774. no joy.

  775. And you

  776. have no

  777. choice but

  778. to drink

  779. it.

  780. And yet

  781. standing

  782. before you

  783. is the

  784. Lord Jesus.

  785. Jesus.

  786. And in

  787. love he

  788. reaches out

  789. and he

  790. takes that

  791. cup from

  792. your hands

  793. and he

  794. drinks it.

  795. And he

  796. drinks it

  797. to the

  798. very last

  799. drop.

  800. So there

  801. is nothing

  802. left for us

  803. to drink,

  804. not even

  805. a taste.

  806. For when

  807. Jesus died

  808. on the cross,

  809. he is

  810. drinking that

  811. judgment for

  812. you and

  813. for me.

  814. Do you

  815. see,

  816. as we

  817. follow Jesus

  818. into the

  819. garden,

  820. not only

  821. do we

  822. see that

  823. we fall

  824. in temptation,

  825. but we

  826. meet the

  827. perfect man

  828. who passes

  829. the test,

  830. who passes

  831. temptation,

  832. who resists

  833. it,

  834. and drinks

  835. judgment for

  836. you and

  837. for me,

  838. dealing with

  839. our failure.

  840. So how

  841. do we

  842. respond?

  843. Well,

  844. third,

  845. we pray

  846. not to

  847. fall into

  848. temptation.

  849. You see,

  850. because of

  851. Jesus'

  852. death on

  853. the cross,

  854. temptation

  855. is now

  856. no longer

  857. this

  858. irresistible

  859. force that

  860. we have

  861. to give

  862. into.

  863. Three

  864. things that

  865. we can

  866. pray in

  867. regards to

  868. our

  869. temptations.

  870. And before

  871. we look at

  872. these three

  873. things,

  874. let me

  875. just

  876. encourage

  877. you right

  878. now,

  879. each of

  880. you

  881. personally,

  882. try and

  883. identify for

  884. yourself right

  885. now,

  886. what is the

  887. area of

  888. weakness?

  889. What is the

  890. temptation that

  891. you most

  892. succumb to?

  893. What is it

  894. that you so

  895. easily fall

  896. into?

  897. It could be

  898. an anger

  899. issue.

  900. It could be

  901. addiction

  902. issues.

  903. it could

  904. be the

  905. temptation

  906. to find

  907. your comfort

  908. in material

  909. things and

  910. physical

  911. things.

  912. Where are

  913. you most

  914. likely to

  915. fall?

  916. And when

  917. you've got

  918. that in

  919. mind,

  920. now let's

  921. think through

  922. what we

  923. pray.

  924. First,

  925. admit to

  926. our weakness.

  927. Look at

  928. verse 45.

  929. When he

  930. rose from

  931. prayer and

  932. went back

  933. to his

  934. disciples,

  935. he found

  936. them asleep,

  937. exhausted

  938. from sorrow.

  939. Why are

  940. you sleeping?

  941. He asked

  942. them.

  943. Get up

  944. and pray

  945. so that

  946. you will

  947. not fall

  948. into

  949. temptation.

  950. Jesus

  951. does not

  952. say,

  953. when you

  954. enter into

  955. temptation,

  956. pray.

  957. No,

  958. Jesus knows

  959. our hearts.

  960. He knows

  961. what we are

  962. like.

  963. He knows

  964. that we

  965. are weak

  966. people.

  967. So he

  968. says,

  969. pray that

  970. you will

  971. not fall

  972. into

  973. temptation.

  974. So it's

  975. a cry for

  976. help saying,

  977. help me

  978. before the

  979. temptation

  980. comes.

  981. Isn't

  982. that what

  983. Jesus taught

  984. his disciples

  985. to pray in

  986. the Lord's

  987. Prayer?

  988. Father,

  989. hallowed be

  990. your name,

  991. and lead

  992. us not

  993. into

  994. temptation.

  995. Jesus

  996. knows how

  997. weak we

  998. are.

  999. And

  1000. Jesus

  1001. knew what

  1002. it was

  1003. to be

  1004. weak.

  1005. And so

  1006. he cries

  1007. out in

  1008. prayer more

  1009. earnestly

  1010. in the

  1011. midst of

  1012. temptation.

  1013. If

  1014. Jesus

  1015. knew that

  1016. he had

  1017. to pray

  1018. in

  1019. temptation,

  1020. how much

  1021. more do

  1022. you and

  1023. I need

  1024. to pray?

  1025. We

  1026. admit our

  1027. weakness

  1028. weakness.

  1029. And that

  1030. we so

  1031. easily fall

  1032. and fail.

  1033. Second,

  1034. we pray to

  1035. be

  1036. strengthened.

  1037. As

  1038. Jesus

  1039. prays,

  1040. he is

  1041. dependent

  1042. upon his

  1043. father for

  1044. help.

  1045. So,

  1046. verse 43,

  1047. an angel

  1048. from heaven

  1049. appeared to

  1050. him and

  1051. strengthened

  1052. him.

  1053. God

  1054. knows our

  1055. weakness.

  1056. He knows

  1057. how we're

  1058. so prone

  1059. to wander.

  1060. So,

  1061. when we

  1062. call out

  1063. to him

  1064. in prayer,

  1065. he will

  1066. strengthen

  1067. us.

  1068. The writer

  1069. to the

  1070. Hebrews

  1071. reminds us.

  1072. I haven't

  1073. got it

  1074. here,

  1075. I'll just

  1076. read it

  1077. out to

  1078. you.

  1079. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4:15

  1080. 4,

  1081. verse 15.

  1082. He says,

  1083. we do

  1084. not have

  1085. a high

  1086. priest who

  1087. is unable

  1088. to feel

  1089. sympathy

  1090. for our

  1091. weaknesses,

  1092. but we

  1093. have one

  1094. who has

  1095. been

  1096. tempted

  1097. in every

  1098. way just

  1099. as we

  1100. are.

  1101. So,

  1102. he knows

  1103. what we

  1104. go through.

  1105. Yet,

  1106. he did

  1107. not sin,

  1108. therefore,

  1109. he's in a

  1110. position to

  1111. be able to

  1112. give to

  1113. us.

  1114. So,

  1115. let us

  1116. then approach

  1117. the throne

  1118. of grace

  1119. with confidence

  1120. so that we

  1121. may receive

  1122. the mercy

  1123. and find

  1124. grace to

  1125. help us

  1126. in our

  1127. time of

  1128. need.

  1129. Through

  1130. Jesus'

  1131. death,

  1132. we now

  1133. have access

  1134. to our

  1135. Father,

  1136. a generous

  1137. Father who

  1138. gives what

  1139. we need.

  1140. In the

  1141. face of our

  1142. temptation,

  1143. we pray

  1144. for grace

  1145. and mercy,

  1146. pray to

  1147. be

  1148. strengthened

  1149. so that

  1150. we do

  1151. not fall.

  1152. So,

  1153. we admit

  1154. our weakness,

  1155. we pray to

  1156. be strengthened,

  1157. and third,

  1158. we rejoice

  1159. in our

  1160. Savior.

  1161. You see,

  1162. because of

  1163. Jesus'

  1164. death on

  1165. the cross,

  1166. us,

  1167. even when

  1168. we fall

  1169. into

  1170. temptation,

  1171. it is

  1172. not the

  1173. end.

  1174. Remember

  1175. what Jesus

  1176. said to

  1177. Simon Peter?

  1178. Go back

  1179. to verse

  1180. 31.

  1181. He's putting

  1182. it up to

  1183. them,

  1184. saying,

  1185. temptation is

  1186. coming.

  1187. Verse 31,

  1188. Simon,

  1189. Simon,

  1190. Satan has

  1191. asked to

  1192. sift all

  1193. of you

  1194. as wheat.

  1195. we're going

  1196. to face

  1197. temptation.

  1198. It's going

  1199. to happen.

  1200. But that's

  1201. not all that

  1202. Jesus says.

  1203. Read on

  1204. verse 32.

  1205. But I

  1206. have prayed

  1207. for you,

  1208. Simon,

  1209. that your

  1210. faith may

  1211. not fail.

  1212. And when

  1213. you have

  1214. turned back,

  1215. strengthen

  1216. your brothers.

  1217. it's an

  1218. enlightening

  1219. verse.

  1220. Jesus is

  1221. saying,

  1222. I pray

  1223. that your

  1224. faith may

  1225. not fail.

  1226. And when

  1227. you have

  1228. turned back,

  1229. in other

  1230. words,

  1231. look Simon,

  1232. and to

  1233. all the

  1234. disciples,

  1235. you will

  1236. fall,

  1237. but your

  1238. faith will

  1239. not fail.

  1240. The prayers

  1241. of Jesus

  1242. on our

  1243. behalf

  1244. cause us

  1245. to turn

  1246. back to

  1247. him when

  1248. we do

  1249. fall in

  1250. temptation.

  1251. And as

  1252. we'll see

  1253. that next

  1254. week,

  1255. Simon Peter

  1256. did fall,

  1257. but the

  1258. prayers of

  1259. Jesus means

  1260. that Peter

  1261. will turn

  1262. back and

  1263. be restored.

  1264. His

  1265. faith

  1266. will not

  1267. fail.

  1268. And because

  1269. Jesus died

  1270. for us

  1271. on the

  1272. cross,

  1273. because he

  1274. drank that

  1275. judgment for

  1276. you and

  1277. for me,

  1278. he now

  1279. continues to

  1280. intercede for

  1281. us.

  1282. You see,

  1283. Jesus'

  1284. death is

  1285. not just a

  1286. partial

  1287. rescue,

  1288. it's a

  1289. rescue for

  1290. all eternity.

  1291. He doesn't

  1292. save us

  1293. until we

  1294. fall and

  1295. go,

  1296. right,

  1297. okay,

  1298. I've

  1299. saved you,

  1300. but now

  1301. you've

  1302. fallen,

  1303. that's

  1304. it,

  1305. you're

  1306. on your

  1307. own now.

  1308. Jesus

  1309. saves us

  1310. even

  1311. when we

  1312. fall.

  1313. He

  1314. drinks the

  1315. cup of

  1316. judgment

  1317. so that

  1318. we will

  1319. never,

  1320. ever have

  1321. to drink

  1322. of its

  1323. dregs

  1324. again.

  1325. Look at

  1326. verse 32.

  1327. Read it

  1328. and put

  1329. your own

  1330. name

  1331. instead of

  1332. Simon.

  1333. But I

  1334. have prayed

  1335. for you

  1336. that your

  1337. faith may

  1338. not fail

  1339. and when

  1340. you have

  1341. turned back,

  1342. strengthen

  1343. your

  1344. brothers.

  1345. Jesus

  1346. has

  1347. overcome

  1348. temptation

  1349. for us

  1350. so that

  1351. we can

  1352. be

  1353. restored,

  1354. not

  1355. living in

  1356. a depth

  1357. of guilt

  1358. and despair,

  1359. but raised

  1360. up,

  1361. go and

  1362. strengthen

  1363. your

  1364. brothers.

  1365. Go and

  1366. encourage

  1367. them.

  1368. Go and

  1369. encourage

  1370. fellow

  1371. disciples

  1372. who are

  1373. going

  1374. through a

  1375. hard time,

  1376. who are

  1377. struggling

  1378. in their

  1379. faith.

  1380. As we

  1381. follow Jesus

  1382. to the

  1383. cross,

  1384. we begin

  1385. to see

  1386. our great

  1387. need of

  1388. the cross.

  1389. Let us

  1390. pray that

  1391. we will

  1392. not fall

  1393. into

  1394. temptation.

  1395. As we

  1396. pray,

  1397. we all

  1398. know the

  1399. areas that

  1400. we struggle

  1401. with,

  1402. the areas

  1403. where we

  1404. conform.

  1405. Father,

  1406. forgive us

  1407. for the

  1408. times we

  1409. say,

  1410. my will

  1411. be done

  1412. and not

  1413. your will

  1414. be done.

  1415. Father,

  1416. we admit

  1417. to our

  1418. weakness

  1419. that we

  1420. so often

  1421. fail to

  1422. resist.

  1423. We

  1424. cave in

  1425. under the

  1426. pressure.

  1427. Father,

  1428. draw near

  1429. to us

  1430. and strengthen

  1431. us as we

  1432. go about

  1433. this week,

  1434. as we

  1435. go into

  1436. our workplace,

  1437. our schools,

  1438. amongst our

  1439. friends where

  1440. we are

  1441. challenged to

  1442. doubt you,

  1443. where we are

  1444. pushed to

  1445. remain silent

  1446. about you.

  1447. Strengthen

  1448. us,

  1449. pour out

  1450. your grace

  1451. and mercy

  1452. and fill us

  1453. with the

  1454. power of

  1455. your Holy

  1456. Spirit,

  1457. that we

  1458. may walk

  1459. obediently to

  1460. you and

  1461. to your

  1462. word.

  1463. And,

  1464. Father,

  1465. may we

  1466. rejoice in

  1467. a wonderful

  1468. Savior,

  1469. who has

  1470. walked the

  1471. path for

  1472. us and

  1473. drunk the

  1474. cup of

  1475. judgment so

  1476. that we

  1477. never have

  1478. to,

  1479. who has

  1480. rescued us

  1481. completely

  1482. and forever,

  1483. who forgives

  1484. even when

  1485. we do

  1486. fall,

  1487. and who

  1488. prays for

  1489. us even

  1490. now,

  1491. so that

  1492. our faith

  1493. may not

  1494. fail.

  1495. What a

  1496. great Savior.

  1497. Thank you,

  1498. in Jesus'

  1499. name.

  1500. Amen.

  1501. Here's

  1502. another

  1503. prayer,

  1504. a prayer

  1505. in song,

  1506. picking up

  1507. on some

  1508. of the

  1509. things we've

  1510. been looking

  1511. at.

  1512. Before the

  1513. throne of

  1514. God above,

  1515. I have a

  1516. strong,

  1517. a perfect

  1518. plea,

  1519. a great

  1520. high priest

  1521. whose name

  1522. is love,

  1523. whoever lives

  1524. and pleads

  1525. for me.

  1526. You ever

  1527. think about

  1528. that as you

  1529. go about

  1530. your day,

  1531. oblivious to

  1532. what's going

  1533. on?
