  1. Thanks, Connor. Good morning, everyone.

  2. So if you'd like to open up your Bibles on page, if you've got the church Bibles, on page 1213,

  3. we're going to be looking at James chapter 1, verses 1 to 8.

    James 1:1–8

  4. And that's James chapter 1, verses 1 to 8.

    James 1:1–8

  5. And as you open up your Bibles, I'm going to read from the original scroll.

  6. So if you're all following with me, I'm going to read like a letter would be read.

  7. I might have somebody holding it down there for me and I might read.

  8. But anyway, this is the way we're going to do it.

  9. So, James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  10. to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations, greetings.

  11. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

  12. because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

  13. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

  14. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,

  15. who gives generously to all without finding fault, and this will be given to you.

  16. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,

  17. because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

  18. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

  19. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

  20. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

  21. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

  22. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

  23. This letter starts like so many other letters.

  24. The author stating who he is and who he's writing to.

  25. So right at the beginning, we can see that this letter is from James,

  26. a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  27. And it's written to the twelve tribes, the scattered.

  28. Just as the children of Israel were dispersed throughout the world in their exile,

  29. so also believers in Christ now at the time of writing are scattered,

  30. waiting for God to gather them home to himself.

  31. We too today are also part of the scattered,

  32. so this letter is for us as well.

  33. James is a very practical book.

  34. He doesn't go deep into doctrine,

  35. but he assumes that as believers, as followers of Jesus,

  36. that we know what it is to know Jesus, to be followers.

  37. And so this book is very practical.

  38. This is written to us so that we know how we take,

  39. how we know what we take,

  40. what we know of Jesus, we take in our heads,

  41. and we put into our lives,

  42. being doers of the word.

  43. And that's what we're going to try and explain today

  44. and over these following weeks,

  45. as we look at the practical wisdom

  46. to help us live as Christians.

  47. So it is to us,

  48. we have been called as God's people.

  49. We're called now to persevere,

  50. to have joy in trials.

  51. Consider with me a young couple

  52. in their early stages of attraction to each other.

  53. They believe that theirs will be

  54. a lifelong partnership that will last forever.

  55. They are made for each other

  56. and nothing will ever come between them.

  57. Of course, at this stage in their relationship,

  58. they have every reason to believe this,

  59. but it's only a matter of opinion, isn't it?

  60. It's their opinion,

  61. and one which has no substance yet,

  62. even if they are unwilling to admit it.

  63. In time, their belief will be tested.

  64. There will be attractive temptations

  65. from other possible partners in the future.

  66. They will discover each other's likes and dislikes,

  67. which may not be so easy to accept or to adjust to.

  68. Perhaps there will be an unwelcome

  69. or an antagonistic reaction

  70. from one of the parents involved,

  71. which just makes the relationship at times awkward

  72. and a bit difficult.

  73. However, if these times of testing are endured,

  74. the relationship starts to become more durable.

  75. And as time goes by,

  76. the conviction within them to marry

  77. becomes stronger and more settled.

  78. This same process carries on into their marriage,

  79. having promised to forsake

  80. all other partnerships for life

  81. and in the course of their life together,

  82. maybe by the experience of fighting off temptations

  83. or of dogged determination

  84. to save their marriage in times of coolness,

  85. or just the shoulder-to-shoulder

  86. facing and bearing of the difficulties of life.

  87. Their minds become more and more determined

  88. or redirected away from the thought of fidelity.

  89. What began as a tentative belief

  90. ends as a fixed, unchangeable constant in life.

  91. The same can be said for the Christians

  92. undergoing trials.

  93. James says,

  94. for you know the testing of your faith

  95. produces perseverance

  96. or steadfastness,

  97. as other translations put it.

  98. In the book of James,

  99. he refers to very ordinary struggles.

  100. As you quickly scan through the book,

  101. a few will pop up.

  102. There's lack of faith.

  103. There's doubt and double-mindedness.

  104. There's confusion,

  105. the need for wisdom,

  106. the love of money turning their heads from God,

  107. temptations of their own evil desires,

  108. anger, apathy,

  109. relational issues like fighting and quarreling,

  110. killing and coveting,

  111. pride.

  112. They were struggling with slander.

  113. Some workers were not being paid for their work,

  114. so there was extortion on one hand

  115. and poverty on the other,

  116. leading to anger and arguments.

  117. The call is still to rejoice

  118. or to consider it joy.

  119. What are we going to preach to ourselves

  120. when we face trials?

  121. What are we going to say to each other

  122. when these things happen to us?

  123. How are we going to disciple ourselves

  124. or our children or each other?

  125. James makes it clear in verse 2

  126. to count it all joy.

  127. But how do we do that?

  128. How do you even feel when I say

  129. consider it all joy

  130. when you face all types of trials?

  131. When you consider all that you're going through,

  132. if someone really knew

  133. what you were going through,

  134. they wouldn't say count it all joy, surely.

  135. In fact, if they did,

  136. it would sound quite trite actually, wouldn't it?

  137. What does James know about trials anyway?

  138. Well, James knew suffering.

  139. James was the half-brother of Jesus,

  140. so he saw all that Jesus went through

  141. up to and including

  142. death on the cross.

  143. James was the leader

  144. of the early church in Jerusalem,

  145. so he would have watched

  146. and seen some of his own church members

  147. being persecuted for following Jesus.

  148. He was under pressure

  149. from the religious leaders in Jerusalem

  150. for following Jesus,

  151. and he was even pressurized

  152. to try and renounce

  153. his faith in Jesus.

  154. And we know this

  155. because James was stoned to death

  156. by scribes and Pharisees

  157. for refusing to do this.

  158. That's how committed he was to Jesus.

  159. It's safe to say that James

  160. has known suffering,

  161. and so he can say this.

  162. He's not saying that trials

  163. are joyful things

  164. in and of themselves.

  165. It's not like,

  166. well, I've just lost my job

  167. and my mortgage is in arrears.

  168. My wife crashed the car,

  169. wrote it off,

  170. and now she's facing

  171. a long road back to recovery.

  172. Not to mention,

  173. my dog had to be put down last week

  174. due to a horrible infection.

  175. Oh, and did I mention

  176. that my mother is suffering from cancer?

  177. And it's really not looking good.

  178. But you know what?

  179. It's all joy.

  180. It's great.

  181. No.

  182. That's not what he's saying.

  183. And on the day

  184. when I'm feeling down

  185. and low about all these things

  186. that are happening to me,

  187. I just put on my happy face

  188. and I grin and I bear it.

  189. No, that's not what he's saying,

  190. either.

  191. Horrible things happen.

  192. We do face trials.

  193. And the Bible is full of compassion

  194. for us when we do that.

  195. When life is hard.

  196. Ecclesiastes chapter 3

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  197. says that there is a time

  198. for everything.

  199. Verse 4 specifically says

  200. that there is a time to weep

  201. and a time to laugh,

  202. a time to mourn

  203. and a time to dance.

  204. It's okay to find life hard.

  205. Think about Jesus.

  206. He wept

  207. when he heard

  208. that his friend

  209. Lazarus

  210. had died.

  211. Paul instructs us

  212. to weep

  213. with those who weep.

  214. scripture says that there is sadness

  215. and hurt

  216. and pain.

  217. It doesn't minimize it.

  218. But yet James

  219. still instructs us

  220. to consider these trials

  221. joy.

  222. To consider.

  223. It's more about

  224. thinking and feeling.

  225. The question for us is

  226. how do we regard trials?

  227. How do we

  228. think about trials?

  229. How do we consider

  230. trials?

  231. Do we see them

  232. as a burden

  233. and an inconvenience?

  234. Or as something

  235. that is part of life?

  236. But which God

  237. can use

  238. to shape

  239. and form us?

  240. As we consider

  241. our trials

  242. we should have a perspective

  243. which looks

  244. beyond the present

  245. to the future.

  246. Pure joy

  247. is not necessarily

  248. a present happiness

  249. but joy

  250. in anticipation

  251. of God's future

  252. for us.

  253. These very trials

  254. and the testing

  255. of our faith

  256. produce perseverance

  257. or as other translations

  258. put it

  259. steadfastness.

  260. Like the couple

  261. we were thinking of

  262. a minute ago

  263. over years of courtship

  264. and marriage

  265. times of testing

  266. lead to an unshakable

  267. commitment

  268. to each other.

  269. Isn't that what we want

  270. with Jesus?

  271. Consider it pure joy

  272. my brothers and sisters

  273. whenever you face

  274. trials

  275. of many kinds

  276. because you know

  277. that the testing

  278. of your faith

  279. produces perseverance.

  280. Jesus in Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  281. chapter 8

  282. 15

  283. when describing

  284. the seeds

  285. falling on

  286. four types of soil

  287. says that

  288. the seed that falls

  289. on good soil

  290. stands for those

  291. with a noble

  292. and a good heart

  293. who hear the word

  294. retain it

  295. and by

  296. persevering

  297. produce a crop.

  298. Again

  299. Jesus says

  300. in Luke 21

  301. when talking

  302. about the end

  303. of the age

  304. starting in verse 17

  305. it says

  306. all men will hate you

  307. because of me

  308. but not a hair

  309. of your head

  310. will perish.

  311. By standing firm

  312. you will gain life.

  313. It is

  314. when we persevere

  315. that the fruit comes.

  316. trials in life

  317. are a test.

  318. They test

  319. our humility

  320. don't they?

  321. They test

  322. whether or not

  323. we think more

  324. highly of ourselves

  325. than we ought

  326. to think.

  327. They test

  328. whether we have

  329. some imaginary

  330. idea

  331. that we're so good

  332. God should never

  333. have to test us.

  334. Trials also test

  335. our love

  336. for worldly things.

  337. They test

  338. whether or not

  339. we are succumbing

  340. to earthly treasure.

  341. when earthly things

  342. are ripped out

  343. of our grasp

  344. we find out

  345. whether or not

  346. we are worldly

  347. or not.

  348. Tests in life

  349. suffering

  350. pain

  351. and sorrow

  352. loss

  353. they also test

  354. whether or not

  355. we are heavenly minded

  356. whether or not

  357. we really live

  358. with an eternal

  359. perspective

  360. and trials in life

  361. also test

  362. what we really love.

  363. all of these things

  364. test the strength

  365. and the character

  366. of our faith.

  367. They test

  368. our humility

  369. whether we can

  370. take suffering

  371. willingly

  372. because we know

  373. that we deserve

  374. nothing more.

  375. Think of Jesus

  376. without sin

  377. the perfect man

  378. who went around

  379. helping people

  380. all the time

  381. but yes

  382. he suffered horribly

  383. and he definitely

  384. didn't deserve it.

  385. So it's not about

  386. what we deserve

  387. trials test

  388. whether we have

  389. our affections

  390. set on things

  391. above

  392. or here.

  393. They test

  394. what we really love.

  395. Look at the testing

  396. of Abraham.

  397. Was there anything

  398. dearer to Abraham

  399. than Isaac?

  400. Yes

  401. God was

  402. and the test

  403. revealed

  404. who Abraham

  405. loved most.

  406. He loved Isaac

  407. Genesis 22

  408. says that

  409. but he loved

  410. God

  411. more.

  412. verse 3

  413. you know

  414. that the testing

  415. of your faith

  416. produces

  417. perseverance.

  418. Understand

  419. what God

  420. is doing.

  421. He's making

  422. you stronger.

  423. He's producing

  424. perseverance.

  425. He's making

  426. you more

  427. formidable

  428. strengthening

  429. your faith

  430. and your

  431. usefulness.

  432. Just like

  433. gold is

  434. purified

  435. or refined

  436. in the fire

  437. we are being

  438. made more

  439. Christ-like

  440. as we mature.

  441. One person

  442. has described

  443. it like this

  444. trials are

  445. employed by

  446. God

  447. to give us

  448. what we most

  449. want.

  450. Trials are

  451. employed by

  452. God to give us

  453. what we most

  454. want and

  455. if we are

  456. Christians

  457. that is not

  458. comfort

  459. but conformity

  460. to Christ.

  461. Being

  462. conformed

  463. to Christ

  464. is worth

  465. so much

  466. more

  467. than comfort.

  468. For the

  469. believer

  470. this idea

  471. of being

  472. matured

  473. is good

  474. news

  475. as we

  476. look forward

  477. to the

  478. day when

  479. the trials

  480. will end

  481. and we

  482. are presented

  483. as perfect

  484. in the

  485. new creation.

  486. what do

  487. you most

  488. want?

  489. Do you

  490. want

  491. comfort

  492. or

  493. conformity

  494. to Christ?

  495. Call to

  496. maturity.

  497. Verse 4

  498. Let

  499. perseverance

  500. finish its

  501. work so

  502. that you

  503. may be

  504. mature and

  505. complete

  506. not lacking

  507. anything.

  508. The

  509. Greek

  510. for

  511. mature

  512. is

  513. also

  514. translated

  515. as

  516. perfect.

  517. This

  518. is the

  519. virtue

  520. that

  521. Noah

  522. exhibited

  523. when

  524. he

  525. was

  526. described

  527. as

  528. blameless.

  529. This

  530. is what

  531. Jesus

  532. intends

  533. when he

  534. calls his

  535. followers

  536. to be

  537. perfect

  538. therefore

  539. as your

  540. heavenly

  541. father

  542. is

  543. perfect.

  544. It

  545. suggests

  546. that we

  547. are to

  548. have a

  549. character

  550. like

  551. God's.

  552. This

  553. type of

  554. maturity

  555. is produced

  556. by holding

  557. fast to

  558. faith in

  559. Christ

  560. while in

  561. the fire

  562. of

  563. persecution.

  564. The

  565. impurities

  566. in one's

  567. character

  568. will be

  569. burnt off

  570. in that

  571. fire.

  572. The end

  573. result

  574. will be

  575. not just

  576. maturity

  577. but

  578. completeness

  579. or

  580. wholeness

  581. which means

  582. that not a

  583. single part

  584. of a

  585. God-like

  586. character

  587. will be

  588. missing

  589. or lacking

  590. in us.

  591. If this

  592. is the

  593. end result

  594. of the

  595. trials

  596. difficult

  597. as they

  598. may be

  599. there is

  600. indeed

  601. something

  602. to rejoice

  603. about.

  604. We are

  605. being made

  606. whole and

  607. complete and

  608. mature

  609. not lacking

  610. anything.

  611. Here James

  612. invites us to

  613. picture ourselves

  614. in a state of

  615. spiritual maturity

  616. where we are

  617. rid of the

  618. jealousy

  619. or impatience

  620. or bitterness

  621. or selfishness

  622. or anything

  623. that now

  624. spoil the

  625. wholeness of

  626. our fellowship

  627. with God.

  628. Do you

  629. hunger and

  630. thirst for

  631. righteousness

  632. being made

  633. right with

  634. God?

  635. If you

  636. long to be

  637. the person

  638. that God

  639. desires you

  640. to be

  641. you now

  642. have reason

  643. for considering

  644. it pure joy

  645. whenever you

  646. face trials

  647. of many

  648. kinds.

  649. The trials

  650. can be

  651. opportunities

  652. for testing

  653. to develop

  654. in you

  655. the perseverance

  656. which when

  657. it finishes

  658. its work

  659. will leave

  660. you mature

  661. in Christ.

  662. Skip

  663. ahead to

  664. verse 12.

  665. Blessed is

  666. the one

  667. who perseveres

  668. under trial

  669. because having

  670. stood the test

  671. that person

  672. will receive

  673. the crown

  674. of life

  675. that the

  676. Lord has

  677. promised to

  678. those who

  679. love him.

  680. As we are

  681. made mature

  682. or perfect

  683. through perseverance

  684. we will

  685. receive the

  686. crown of

  687. life which

  688. the Lord

  689. will give

  690. to those

  691. that love

  692. him.

  693. There are

  694. people who

  695. come,

  696. you see

  697. them and

  698. I see

  699. them,

  700. they come

  701. to the

  702. church,

  703. they profess

  704. faith,

  705. they might

  706. even get

  707. baptized,

  708. but then

  709. trouble comes

  710. into their

  711. life and

  712. they're gone

  713. and they

  714. may never

  715. come back.

  716. maybe they

  717. got burned

  718. in a

  719. relationship

  720. or maybe

  721. they came

  722. along and

  723. they had

  724. to go

  725. through some

  726. struggle.

  727. A dear

  728. friend or

  729. family member

  730. died and

  731. it was just

  732. too much for

  733. them to

  734. bear and

  735. they walked

  736. away and

  737. maybe shook

  738. a fist at

  739. God on

  740. their way

  741. out and

  742. that was

  743. this.

  744. You see

  745. perseverance

  746. through trial

  747. is the

  748. proof of

  749. living,

  750. mature

  751. faith.

  752. We've

  753. heard the

  754. call to

  755. persevere

  756. and the

  757. call to

  758. maturity.

  759. Next we

  760. hear the

  761. call to

  762. prayer.

  763. Looking

  764. forward we

  765. can see

  766. that the

  767. day is

  768. coming once

  769. we have

  770. persevered and

  771. when we

  772. will become

  773. mature,

  774. lacking in

  775. nothing,

  776. but for

  777. now we

  778. all know

  779. that there

  780. are things

  781. we lack.

  782. Or more

  783. specifically,

  784. one thing

  785. in particular

  786. we lack.

  787. Maybe you

  788. can't quite

  789. see life the

  790. way I'm

  791. describing it

  792. or that

  793. James is

  794. describing it.

  795. That we

  796. should be

  797. joyful in

  798. trials.

  799. Maybe that's

  800. something you

  801. can't quite

  802. get your

  803. head around.

  804. Maybe things

  805. are so

  806. difficult for

  807. you in

  808. some situation

  809. and all

  810. you can see

  811. is a mess

  812. with no

  813. possible

  814. purpose,

  815. with no

  816. opportunity

  817. to see

  818. how this

  819. situation

  820. could be

  821. resolved,

  822. let alone

  823. lead to

  824. maturity.

  825. Well,

  826. if that's

  827. the case,

  828. you need

  829. wisdom.

  830. We need

  831. wisdom to

  832. see that

  833. all of

  834. life is

  835. somehow

  836. serving the

  837. purposes of

  838. God.

  839. Or perhaps

  840. you do

  841. see that

  842. in all

  843. things the

  844. Lord's

  845. hand is

  846. at work

  847. in you

  848. through

  849. certain

  850. pressures

  851. or trials.

  852. And in

  853. that time,

  854. that will

  855. make you

  856. mature.

  857. But in

  858. the midst

  859. of all

  860. of that,

  861. you still

  862. don't know

  863. which way

  864. to turn.

  865. There's a

  866. fork in

  867. the road

  868. and you

  869. don't know

  870. which path

  871. to take.

  872. You're

  873. prepared to

  874. persevere,

  875. but you

  876. don't know

  877. the Lord's

  878. will in

  879. that circumstance.

  880. In that

  881. case,

  882. you need

  883. wisdom too.

  884. Brian O'Driscoll,

  885. the rugby

  886. player,

  887. famously said

  888. in a

  889. post-match

  890. interview,

  891. knowledge is

  892. knowing that

  893. a tomato

  894. is a fruit.

  895. Wisdom is

  896. knowing that

  897. you don't

  898. put it in

  899. a fruit

  900. salad.

  901. It's

  902. funny,

  903. but it's

  904. true.

  905. If we

  906. say about

  907. someone that

  908. they know

  909. the Bible

  910. really well,

  911. all we have

  912. done is

  913. describe how

  914. knowledgeable

  915. they are.

  916. But if

  917. that same

  918. person knows

  919. how to

  920. use the

  921. Bible to

  922. understand

  923. life and

  924. to understand

  925. the world

  926. around them,

  927. if they're

  928. able to

  929. use the

  930. Bible to

  931. guide their

  932. behaviour and

  933. the behaviour

  934. of others,

  935. then the

  936. knowledge that

  937. they have of

  938. the Bible

  939. has passed

  940. over into

  941. wisdom.

  942. The wise

  943. person will

  944. then be able

  945. to see life

  946. as James

  947. describes it

  948. in verse

  949. 2-4,

  950. and be able

  951. to make

  952. personal

  953. decisions with

  954. the view

  955. to being

  956. made

  957. mature.

  958. We need

  959. wisdom to

  960. see that

  961. all of

  962. life is

  963. serving the

  964. purposes of

  965. the Lord.

  966. Verse 5,

  967. if any of

  968. you lacks

  969. wisdom,

  970. you should

  971. ask God,

  972. who gives

  973. generously to

  974. all without

  975. finding fault,

  976. and it will

  977. be given to

  978. you.

  979. We are

  980. told to

  981. ask for

  982. it.

  983. We don't

  984. go to

  985. college for

  986. it.

  987. we are

  988. told just

  989. to ask

  990. for it.

  991. In fact,

  992. we are

  993. promised

  994. it if

  995. we do

  996. ask.

  997. We are

  998. promised

  999. that when

  1000. we ask

  1001. for wisdom

  1002. in faith,

  1003. that we

  1004. will receive

  1005. it with

  1006. abundance,

  1007. because God

  1008. gives

  1009. generously.

  1010. As we

  1011. think about

  1012. our own

  1013. trials and

  1014. times of

  1015. testing,

  1016. sometimes we

  1017. can see

  1018. no way

  1019. out.

  1020. We know

  1021. that the

  1022. problem

  1023. facing us

  1024. is just

  1025. too big

  1026. to overcome,

  1027. or the

  1028. temptation

  1029. that we

  1030. struggle

  1031. with just

  1032. keeps coming

  1033. back and

  1034. we can't

  1035. resist.

  1036. Or the

  1037. person who

  1038. we can't

  1039. get through

  1040. to is

  1041. just so

  1042. hard-hearted

  1043. that we

  1044. can't see

  1045. how they

  1046. could possibly

  1047. soften.

  1048. We can't

  1049. possibly see

  1050. how God

  1051. could act

  1052. in this

  1053. situation.

  1054. if any

  1055. of you

  1056. lacks

  1057. wisdom,

  1058. you should

  1059. ask God,

  1060. because God

  1061. gives generously.

  1062. We can

  1063. easily fall

  1064. into one

  1065. of two

  1066. categories

  1067. when we

  1068. face trials.

  1069. We are

  1070. either very

  1071. quick to

  1072. talk to

  1073. God about

  1074. our problems

  1075. and pray

  1076. about things,

  1077. but then we

  1078. are slow

  1079. to share

  1080. our burdens

  1081. with others.

  1082. very often

  1083. God uses

  1084. people

  1085. to share

  1086. his wisdom

  1087. with us.

  1088. Alternatively,

  1089. when we

  1090. come across

  1091. a problem,

  1092. we can

  1093. talk to

  1094. everyone

  1095. about it,

  1096. worrying

  1097. about it

  1098. late at

  1099. night,

  1100. but we're

  1101. slow to

  1102. talk to

  1103. God about

  1104. it,

  1105. and that

  1106. is just

  1107. exhausting.

  1108. We should

  1109. be quick

  1110. to bring

  1111. it to

  1112. God in

  1113. prayer.

  1114. Seek

  1115. him and

  1116. his wisdom

  1117. and it

  1118. will be

  1119. given to

  1120. you.

  1121. There is

  1122. that

  1123. qualification

  1124. of asking

  1125. in faith

  1126. though,

  1127. isn't there?

  1128. And let's

  1129. face it,

  1130. we can

  1131. all struggle

  1132. with that.

  1133. We lack

  1134. faith.

  1135. We can't

  1136. see a way

  1137. out or

  1138. a way

  1139. ahead.

  1140. Well,

  1141. at those

  1142. times,

  1143. we need

  1144. to take

  1145. a step

  1146. back and

  1147. say,

  1148. Lord,

  1149. help my

  1150. unbelief.

  1151. That in

  1152. itself is

  1153. an act

  1154. of faith,

  1155. throwing

  1156. ourselves

  1157. in

  1158. God's

  1159. hands

  1160. at

  1161. his

  1162. mercy,

  1163. and

  1164. then we

  1165. can

  1166. ask

  1167. for

  1168. the

  1169. wisdom

  1170. we

  1171. need

  1172. to

  1173. face

  1174. whatever

  1175. the

  1176. trial

  1177. before

  1178. us

  1179. is.

  1180. We do

  1181. need to

  1182. be careful

  1183. how we

  1184. ask,

  1185. though,

  1186. because it

  1187. is possible

  1188. to ask

  1189. for something

  1190. with wrong

  1191. motives.

  1192. maybe when

  1193. we're asking

  1194. God for

  1195. something,

  1196. we are

  1197. really just

  1198. wanting our

  1199. comforts

  1200. back,

  1201. aren't we?

  1202. Or maybe

  1203. we just

  1204. want to

  1205. get what

  1206. we want.

  1207. Our

  1208. prayer,

  1209. ultimately,

  1210. if it is

  1211. for wisdom,

  1212. will be

  1213. that our

  1214. motives

  1215. become

  1216. kingdom

  1217. motives.

  1218. What is

  1219. best for

  1220. the kingdom

  1221. of God?

  1222. As we

  1223. mature and

  1224. are shaped

  1225. and molded

  1226. into Christ

  1227. likeness,

  1228. our desires

  1229. become God's

  1230. desires,

  1231. so our

  1232. motives

  1233. become

  1234. purer.

  1235. So even

  1236. as we

  1237. pray,

  1238. we call

  1239. out to

  1240. God with

  1241. right

  1242. motives

  1243. to give

  1244. us the

  1245. right

  1246. motivation.

  1247. We've

  1248. already

  1249. seen that

  1250. God is a

  1251. generous

  1252. giver.

  1253. When we

  1254. ask for

  1255. wisdom,

  1256. he doesn't

  1257. think,

  1258. what?

  1259. You again?

  1260. What did

  1261. you do

  1262. with the

  1263. thing I

  1264. gave you

  1265. the last

  1266. time?

  1267. I'm not

  1268. giving you

  1269. any more

  1270. until you

  1271. show me

  1272. results.

  1273. That's not

  1274. the way

  1275. it works.

  1276. God is a

  1277. generous

  1278. giver.

  1279. He gives

  1280. to all

  1281. who ask

  1282. in faith.

  1283. Finally,

  1284. we hear

  1285. the call

  1286. to believe

  1287. and not

  1288. doubt.

  1289. James

  1290. seems to

  1291. skip ahead

  1292. in verse

  1293. 6.

  1294. Let's

  1295. read that

  1296. actually.

  1297. James

  1298. seems to

  1299. skip ahead

  1300. in verse

  1301. 6 because

  1302. what follows

  1303. isn't

  1304. clear as

  1305. to whether

  1306. he's

  1307. still

  1308. talking

  1309. about

  1310. asking

  1311. for

  1312. wisdom

  1313. but

  1314. focuses

  1315. more

  1316. on

  1317. faith

  1318. and

  1319. prayer

  1320. and

  1321. how

  1322. we

  1323. pray.

  1324. 그대로

  1325. Chris

  1326. he souha

  1327. șoc

  1328. we

  1329. ask.

1330. And then verse 6 raises the question of our sincerity in asking.

1331. Do we want to mature with God?

1332. Do we really want to mature with God?

1333. Are we totally committed to his way of seeing things and his ambitions for our future?

1334. Or are we keeping a door open for the world?

1335. Are we trying to have a foot in each camp?

1336. God's mind is clear, but we can be double-minded.

1337. Faith in verse 6 is our absolute confidence that he will give what we ask.

1338. Doubting is our own inner uncertainty about whether we really want him to give or not.

1339. Doubting isn't about whether God will answer, nor is the doubter the person who struggles with faith.

1340. Doubting is the opposite of Deuteronomy 6.5.

1341. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

1342. James is not saying that our prayers will be answered only if we have a perfect faith that never entertains any kind of doubt.

1343. He condemns the believer who is trying to serve two masters at the same time.

1344. This doubter is the person who is not wholly committed to God, but plays it safe by praying, just in case.

1345. They are interested in advancement in the world, but want to enjoy some blessings now and go to heaven when they die.

1346. Well, James says that they won't get wisdom.

1347. In fact, it says that they will receive nothing from God.

1348. As we come towards the end, this letter is intended for us to read.

1349. It is written in a style similar to Proverbs, where it flows from one piece of wisdom to the next.

1350. We've seen a few of them already today.

1351. And as we continue to read the letter together over the next number of weeks,

1352. some of these things today will be expanded on, and others will be explained from fresh.

1353. But for today, I want us to remember that we are to consider our trials joyfully.

1354. Not because they are joyful,

1355. but because as they test us, they make us persevere.

1356. And like any good relationship that undergoes testing,

1357. the result will be maturity and completeness and wholeness.

1358. If we lack these things, which we do,

1359. we must ask God for wisdom and be prepared to receive it.

1360. And also to get our lives in line with his will,

  1361. having kingdom motives.

  1362. Not to be double-minded,

1363. not to be wanting to have a foot in both camps of the world and heaven,

1364. not to be like a wave so we are blown and tossed by the wind.

1365. The heart of this letter is that James wants us to be deep,

1366. sincere, consistent, faithful followers of Christ.

1367. The heart of this letter is that James wants us to be deep,

1368. sincere, consistent, faithful followers of Christ.

1369. Like that marriage we spoke about at the beginning,

1370. that they are fully and wholly committed to each other.

1371. James wants us to be deep,

1372. sincere, consistent, faithful followers of Christ.

  1373. Let's pray.

  1374. Let's pray.

  1375. Heavenly Father,

1376. I pray that our heart would be your heart,

1377. and that same heart that James has for us to be faithful followers of Christ

1378. would be our heart's desire as well.

1379. We realize that there is much this morning which is difficult to get our heads around.

1380. Very often we long for comfort,

1381. and we kick against conformity as we battle with selfishness.

1382. Lord, we need your wisdom,

  1383. and we need faith.

1384. Thank you that you are faithful and generous,

1385. and you give to all who ask in faith.

1386. Thank you too that even faith comes as a good gift from you.
