  1. Verse 19.

  2. My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this.

  3. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.

  4. Because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

  5. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent,

  6. and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

  7. Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves.

  8. Do what it says.

  9. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says

  10. is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror

  11. and after looking at himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

  12. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom

  13. and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it,

  14. they will be blessed in what they do.

  15. Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues

  16. deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

  17. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this,

  18. to look after orphans and widows in their distress,

  19. and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

  20. So just as Sam comes up to hopefully open up that passage to us,

  21. let me just pray for him and pray for us as we listen,

  22. that we'd be able to concentrate and take it in.

  23. Father God, thank you for the privilege of being able to come here,

  24. as Jonathan prayed and mentioned already,

  25. without distress, without the fear of being persecuted.

  26. We can do it here in the open in a community center.

  27. Thank you for those wonderful blessings.

  28. We pray your Holy Spirit here among us.

  29. We pray that he would be active,

  30. helping us to concentrate on what Sam is saying,

  31. concentrate on what you are trying to say to us this morning through Sam.

  32. And that as the passage said,

  33. we would not merely just listen to it this morning,

  34. and then go away and forget what we heard,

  35. but that throughout the week, throughout the rest of today,

  36. and throughout the rest of the week,

  37. we would be doing what we hear today.

  38. We pray specifically for Sam.

  39. Please fill him with your Holy Spirit.

  40. Thank you for him.

  41. Thank you for the wonderful gifts that you've given him,

  42. that he can teach us, to enable us,

  43. to learn more about you, your word,

  44. and how we can please you throughout our daily lives.

  45. In Jesus' name, amen.

  46. Thanks, Sam.

  47. Good morning, everybody.

  48. Well, I'm going to start with a story.

  49. So one day, a man named Jer decided to go to the doctor,

  50. complaining that his wife wasn't listening to him as well recently,

  51. and that perhaps she had a hearing problem.

  52. The doctor said,

  53. Well, Jer, I have something to diagnose this.

  54. It's very easy.

  55. All you have to do is just go home this evening,

  56. and I want you to stand 15 feet behind your wife,

  57. and she has her back turned.

  58. I just want you to ask her a question,

  59. and see if she responds.

  60. Jer said,

  61. That's grand.

  62. So he went on home,

  63. and that night he came across his wife in the kitchen making the dinner.

  64. So he stood 15 feet behind her,

  65. and he asked,

  66. Darling, what's for dinner?

  67. She didn't reply.

  68. He was like,

  69. Well, this is interesting.

  70. So he moved five feet closer again,

  71. and he asked,

  72. Darling, what's for dinner?

  73. Still no reply.

  74. He moved five feet closer again,

  75. asked the same question,

  76. still to no avail,

  77. until finally he was right behind her,

  78. like as close as he could possibly be behind her without touching her.

  79. And he said,

  80. Darling, what's for dinner?

  81. To which she frantically swung around and cried,

  82. For the fourth time, Jer,

  83. it's roast chicken.

  84. In that little story,

  85. we all know who actually had the hearing problem.

  86. He just didn't realize it, right?

  87. And you know what?

  88. It's kind of similar to us.

  89. We may have a hearing problem,

  90. but most of us just don't realize it.

  91. And it's not a physical hearing problem.

  92. No, it's our spiritual hearing that's faulty.

  93. In our passage today,

  94. James, the half-brother of Jesus,

  95. under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

  96. calls out those of us who think we listen well to God's word,

  97. but actually we aren't listening at all.

  98. God's standard of listening,

  99. as described through the passage today,

  100. is summed up perfectly in verse 22.

  101. Do not merely listen to the word

  102. and so deceive yourself.

  103. Do what it says.

  104. Listening accompanied by action

  105. is the type of listening that God requires of us.

  106. This brings me back to the days of my youth at home.

  107. Picture a scene where my mum,

  108. running out the door to the shops,

  109. asked me to unload the dishwasher

  110. by the time she gets home.

  111. I said, yep, absolutely, grand, I'll do that.

  112. But she arrives back two hours later

  113. and I'm still in the same horizontal position on the couch

  114. and no dishwasher done.

  115. And you can hear her walk in and say,

  116. you didn't listen to me.

  117. And I was like, oh, but it was just a good match

  118. and I completely forgot about it.

  119. I'm sorry.

  120. And then, in the way that only a mum can,

  121. she just, she brings in the sucker punch.

  122. If you were really listening to me,

  123. you would have done what I had asked.

  124. Ouch.

  125. And you know, while we all know the importance

  126. of listening to and heeding our parents' instructions,

  127. there is an ultimately higher voice of authority

  128. in the life of a Christian,

  129. and that is God's word.

  130. And like my mother rebuked me

  131. for a false form of listening,

  132. James, in this passage,

  133. he rebukes us for listening that lacks action.

  134. In God's eyes, being a good listener to his word

  135. means you don't just hear his word,

  136. but you do it.

  137. You put it into practice in your life

  138. and you don't wait.

  139. And that's the main theme of today's passage,

  140. which we're going to explore first

  141. in verses 22 to 25.

  142. And then kind of before and after that section,

  143. there are three practical implications

  144. of this kind of listening for our lives.

  145. And those three implications are this.

  146. Number one, how we speak.

  147. Two, how we interact with the world.

  148. And three, how we serve those in need.

  149. So we'll look at those each in turn a little later.

  150. But first, let's jump into the main theme of the passage

  151. of verse 22.

  152. And I've entitled this Man in the Mirror.

  153. I don't know if anyone's heard that Michael Jackson song.

  154. But yeah, it's kind of appropriate.

  155. Anyway, let's listen.

  156. Let's actually read verse 22 and 23 now.

  157. Do not merely listen to the word

  158. and so deceive yourselves.

  159. Do what it says.

  160. Anyone who listens to the word

  161. but does not do what it says

  162. is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror

  163. and after looking at himself,

  164. goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

  165. In Jane's analogy,

  166. the person looking in the mirror

  167. doesn't do anything about what they see.

  168. They just forget about it.

  169. It's kind of like me the other week.

  170. I paid money to go to a foot consultant

  171. because I needed advice

  172. on how to fix the problem I have with how I walk.

  173. Now, the fact that I went to the foot consultant

  174. made me feel like I was really doing something about a problem

  175. which I've, to be honest,

  176. I've ignored for the last five years of my life.

  177. But the reality is I'm deceiving myself

  178. if I think that just listening to that consultant

  179. is going to solve my problem.

  180. No, I have to go

  181. and I have to fork out 400 euro

  182. for those insoles he told me to buy

  183. or else I'm still going to walk a bit funny.

  184. You see, it's like that with God's word.

  185. The very act of listening

  186. can fool us into thinking that we're doing something,

  187. if you know what I mean.

  188. And we listen a lot here in Ireland.

  189. We think that we're being a really good Christian

  190. because we stopped to read the words today.

  191. Not that we did anything about it.

  192. Or because we went to church

  193. and we listened to a sermon.

  194. Not that we thought about it again since.

  195. You know what James says,

  196. that is as useless

  197. as the man who looked in the mirror

  198. and immediately forgot

  199. that he really needed to shave

  200. and that his face was covered in Nutella from breakfast.

  201. He failed to act on what he saw

  202. and so looking in the mirror

  203. was worthless to him.

  204. Likewise, when we look into the word,

  205. we need to do what it says

  206. or else it's absolutely worthless to us.

  207. And James pulls no punches here.

  208. Look in verse 22.

  209. He says,

  210. we deceive ourselves

  211. if we think that we are followers of Jesus

  212. without taking his word seriously

  213. or putting it into practice in our lives.

  214. You know what?

  215. As Jesus very simply says in John 14,

  216. and it's on the screen here.

  217. You can see it with me.

  218. Anyone who loves me

  219. will obey my teaching.

  220. My Father will love them

  221. and we will come to them

  222. and make our home with them.

  223. But anyone who does not love me

  224. will not obey my teaching.

  225. It's that simple.

  226. Now at this point,

  227. I think we need to press pause

  228. because maybe you are beginning to question,

  229. as I did,

  230. well, does this mean I am doomed

  231. unless I live a flawless life

  232. of perfect obedience to God's word

  233. as James is saying here?

  234. I mean, what hope is there for me,

  235. a man who feels time and time again

  236. though I want to obey?

  237. Well,

  238. Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3:23

  239. verses 23 and 24

  240. gives us the incredible answer

  241. to that question.

  242. For all have sinned

  243. and fall short of the glory of God.

  244. We definitely know that much.

  245. And all are justified freely

  246. by his grace

  247. through the redemption

  248. that came by Christ Jesus.

  249. God knew that we couldn't live

  250. a perfect life of obedience to him.

  251. And that is why he sent his son

  252. to do it in our place.

  253. And that person is Jesus

  254. and his salvation is a free gift

  255. to all who would believe.

  256. He lived the perfect life

  257. we could never live.

  258. And on the cross,

  259. he died the death

  260. that we deserved for our rebellion.

  261. And now he frees us

  262. to live a life of obedience

  263. that glorifies the Father.

  264. A life that strives to listen to

  265. his word and obey.

  266. Not that it's earning our salvation,

  267. but because we love him.

  268. Because we can say,

  269. as the author of Psalm 119 said,

  270. how sweet are your words

  271. to my taste,

  272. sweeter than honey to my mouth.

  273. So, now we can rest assured

  274. that our hearing of God's word

  275. and doing what it says

  276. is not something that earns

  277. our salvation.

  278. Rather, it's the proof

  279. that we have been saved.

  280. And that we do love the Lord.

  281. So, in that light,

  282. let's return to our passage now.

  283. Where James continues

  284. in verse 25

  285. to give us four steps

  286. for putting God's word

  287. into practice.

  288. And in turn,

  289. being blessed

  290. in the Christian life.

  291. And like the rest

  292. of James' letter,

  293. this verse is absolutely

  294. filled with down-to-earth

  295. practical instructions

  296. for the believer.

  297. So, let's pay attention

  298. and learn how to put

  299. God's word into practice.

  300. Read verse 25 with me.

  301. But whoever looks intently

  302. into the perfect law

  303. that gives freedom

  304. and continues in it,

  305. not forgetting what they have heard,

  306. but doing it,

  307. they will be blessed

  308. in what they do.

  309. So, let's take each

  310. of these four steps

  311. in turn.

  312. And I found it kind of helpful

  313. to parallel this

  314. with Psalm 1.

  315. And it's going to come up

  316. on the screen

  317. beside each point.

  318. So, let's start

  319. with the first one.

  320. Step 1.

  321. To put the word

  322. into practice,

  323. we need to look

  324. intently into it.

  325. Okay?

  326. Not just a fleeting glance

  327. every day for five minutes.

  328. Oh, that's that done.

  329. No, I'm going to get on

  330. with the rest of my

  331. busy life today.

  332. No.

  333. We must linger,

  334. dwell on,

  335. wrestle over God's word.

  336. Which does take time.

  337. But as James says,

  338. it's the perfect law

  339. that gives freedom.

  340. Like, these words

  341. free us.

  342. And how do they do that?

  343. Well,

  344. because within the pages

  345. of this book,

  346. we find a true God

  347. who frees us

  348. from all our false gods

  349. and we find a love

  350. which satisfies

  351. and surpasses

  352. all lesser loves

  353. we look to in life.

  354. Why would we stay away

  355. from such a fountain?

  356. A river of life and truth?

  357. We need to check

  358. our attitude

  359. to God's word.

  360. Is it a chore

  361. to open it up?

  362. Or do we recognize

  363. that these words

  364. are the words

  365. of eternal,

  366. overflowing life

  367. that all of us

  368. long for?

  369. Listen to the author

  370. of Psalm 1

  371. who shows us

  372. how to do this one,

  373. right?

  374. It's up there

  375. on the screen as well.

  376. Blessed is the one

  377. who does not walk

  378. in step with the wicked

  379. or stand in the way

  380. that sinners take

  381. or sit in the company

  382. of mockers,

  383. but whose delight

  384. is in the law

  385. of the Lord

  386. and who meditates

  387. on his law

  388. day and night.

  389. Is the word

  390. really our delight?

  391. Do we long for it?

  392. Do we meditate on it?

  393. Do we take time

  394. every day

  395. to still ourselves,

  396. open up the word

  397. and soak in it?

  398. So firstly,

  399. we must look intently

  400. into the word

  401. and secondly,

  402. James says,

  403. we must continue

  404. in it.

  405. In the psalm

  406. that I just read,

  407. the author spoke

  408. of meditating

  409. day and night

  410. on the word.

  411. Now,

  412. if we're really

  413. seeking to fill

  414. our hearts

  415. with God's word,

  416. we can't live off

  417. sporadic,

  418. irregular visits.

  419. We need to be

  420. continually looking

  421. intently into God's word.

  422. We need to get

  423. into rhythms

  424. and habits

  425. of stilling ourselves

  426. and allowing God

  427. a chance to speak

  428. to us daily.

  429. And let's be careful

  430. not to get legalistic

  431. about this either,

  432. but thinking that

  433. those who read

  434. God's word

  435. more often,

  436. that they somehow

  437. have more favour

  438. with God

  439. and they're earning

  440. brownie points

  441. with God

  442. and those who do

  443. it less,

  444. that they're

  445. less holy or something.

  446. No,

  447. that's not what

  448. the psalmist here

  449. is saying,

  450. or James.

  451. They're actually

  452. saying instead

  453. that it is

  454. your joy

  455. that you get

  456. to read the word.

  457. What an incredible

  458. privilege it is

  459. to drink from

  460. this river

  461. of life and truth.

  462. And as Sam

  463. once says,

  464. such a man

  465. is like a tree

  466. planted

  467. by streams

  468. of water.

  469. God's words

  470. are a river

  471. of life.

  472. Drink it up

  473. continually,

  474. daily,

  475. and let his word

  476. flow through

  477. every part of you

  478. and then just

  479. watch as that

  480. tree flourishes

  481. and you find

  482. yourself

  483. becoming more

  484. like Jesus.

  485. Third step.

  486. we must not

  487. forget what

  488. we have heard,

  489. but do it.

  490. So here James

  491. is telling us,

  492. look,

  493. we need to take

  494. some practical

  495. steps to aid

  496. our memory,

  497. or else we're

  498. going to forget

  499. what we've heard.

  500. My wife will

  501. tell you how

  502. shocking a

  503. short-term

  504. memory I have.

  505. You know,

  506. so much so that

  507. I actually have

  508. a list of alarms

  509. on my phone

  510. set to come on

  511. at different times

  512. for the simplest

  513. of everyday tasks.

  514. so let me

  515. tell you one

  516. thing that I

  517. do to

  518. counteract my

  519. own shortcomings.

  520. Firstly,

  521. I take notes

  522. on a Sunday

  523. whenever I'm

  524. listening to

  525. the sermon.

  526. Now,

  527. if I didn't

  528. do this,

  529. I'd have

  530. forgotten most

  531. of the sermon

  532. by Sunday

  533. night,

  534. and good luck

  535. trying to get

  536. it into my

  537. life the next

  538. week.

  539. But by

  540. writing it

  541. down,

  542. I can then

  543. whip out my

  544. notes the

  545. morning after,

  546. Monday morning,

  547. when I'm having

  548. my time with

  549. God.

  550. And at that

  551. stage,

  552. I'm praying,

  553. Father,

  554. show me how

  555. to get this

  556. word into my

  557. life.

  558. And so I

  559. read the

  560. scripture passage

  561. again,

  562. and I

  563. meditate on it.

  564. I look at my

  565. notes,

  566. and I see,

  567. right,

  568. how am I going

  569. to get this

  570. into my life

  571. this week?

  572. And it's great

  573. then,

  574. because I can

  575. go back to

  576. my notes

  577. later in the

  578. week,

  579. Thursday or

  580. Friday,

  581. and see,

  582. right,

  583. how am I

  584. doing on

  585. this?

  586. Have I

  587. really put

  588. the word

  589. into practice

  590. in my

  591. life or

  592. not?

  593. Some other

  594. methods,

  595. though,

  596. are to

  597. listen back

  598. to the

  599. sermon during

  600. the week,

  601. perhaps.

  602. You can do

  603. that on the

  604. church website

  605. here.

  606. Also,

  607. I know

  608. people who

  609. have a

  610. journal open

  611. as they

  612. read the

  613. word at

  614. home,

  615. and they

  616. write down

  617. their learning

  618. in a way

  619. to solidify

  620. it in

  621. their minds.

  622. Also,

  623. there's no

  624. substitute for

  625. good,

  626. old-fashioned

  627. Bible verse

  628. memorization,

  629. and we

  630. shouldn't

  631. neglect that

  632. either.

  633. Why not

  634. set yourself

  635. a target?

  636. Maybe to

  637. memorize a

  638. passage a

  639. week or

  640. a month?

  641. There are

  642. lots of

  643. ways to

  644. do this,

  645. but listen,

  646. you and

  647. I,

  648. we just

  649. need to

  650. figure out

  651. how we're

  652. going to

  653. do it,

  654. and we

  655. need to

  656. put an

  657. action plan

  658. in place

  659. for how

  660. we're going

  661. to remember

  662. God's word

  663. and not

  664. forget it

  665. and get

  666. it into

  667. our lives.

  668. So,

  669. James has

  670. told us to,

  671. number one,

  672. look intently

  673. into the words,

  674. two,

  675. continue in it,

  676. number three,

  677. not to forget

  678. it,

  679. but to do

  680. what it

  681. says,

  682. and his

  683. fourth point

  684. is that when

  685. we do all

  686. this,

  687. we will be

  688. blessed in

  689. what we do.

  690. James was

  691. writing to

  692. persecuted

  693. believers who

  694. had been

  695. scattered from

  696. their homes

  697. in Jerusalem

  698. throughout the

  699. surrounding world.

  700. They were

  701. often poor,

  702. they were

  703. often mourning

  704. and persecuted.

  705. I wonder,

  706. was James

  707. thinking about

  708. what his

  709. brother Jesus

  710. said when

  711. he said in

  712. Matthew chapter

  713. five,

  714. blessed are

  715. the poor in

  716. spirit,

  717. for theirs

  718. is the

  719. kingdom of

  720. heaven.

  721. Blessed are

  722. those who

  723. mourn,

  724. for they

  725. will be

  726. comforted.

  727. Blessed are

  728. those who

  729. are persecuted

  730. because of

  731. righteousness,

  732. for theirs

  733. is the

  734. kingdom of

  735. heaven.

  736. Why are

  737. God's

  738. followers

  739. blessed?

  740. Even in

  741. their grieving,

  742. even in

  743. their poverty

  744. and persecution,

  745. the reason

  746. is we

  747. are part of

  748. the kingdom

  749. of God,

  750. both now

  751. and in the

  752. future in

  753. heaven.

  754. Ours is an

  755. incredible

  756. inheritance

  757. because we

  758. get Jesus

  759. in part now,

  760. fully in

  761. heaven.

  762. We inherit

  763. eternal life,

  764. free from

  765. pain,

  766. an eternity

  767. of perfect

  768. love in

  769. God's

  770. presence.

  771. We are

  772. spiritual

  773. billionaires

  774. in Christ.

  775. And James

  776. says that

  777. this is why

  778. we are

  779. truly blessed.

  780. We have

  781. the joy

  782. of being

  783. in Christ's

  784. kingdom.

  785. A

  786. blessedness

  787. that comes

  788. not by

  789. escaping

  790. the trials

  791. of this

  792. world,

  793. but by

  794. doing

  795. the word

  796. of the

  797. Lord.

  798. And look

  799. and see

  800. what the

  801. psalmist

  802. also says

  803. in this.

  804. He says

  805. that person

  806. is like a

  807. tree planted

  808. by streams

  809. of water

  810. which yields

  811. its fruit

  812. in season

  813. and whose

  814. leaf does

  815. not wither

  816. whatever

  817. they do

  818. prospers.

  819. Plant your

  820. roots deep

  821. in the river

  822. of God's

  823. word and

  824. as the

  825. tree of

  826. your life

  827. grows,

  828. produces

  829. fruit,

  830. provides

  831. shade,

  832. not only

  833. will you

  834. be blessed

  835. but also

  836. all those

  837. around you

  838. will be

  839. blessed

  840. by the

  841. tree of

  842. your faith.

  843. need.

  844. So we

  845. have heard

  846. James'

  847. call to

  848. be doers

  849. of the

  850. word and

  851. not just

  852. hearers and

  853. he's given

  854. us four

  855. steps for

  856. achieving

  857. that in

  858. our lives.

  859. Now in

  860. finishing,

  861. we're going

  862. to examine

  863. the three

  864. different

  865. implications

  866. of this

  867. practice in

  868. our lives.

  869. Firstly,

  870. in how we

  871. speak,

  872. secondly,

  873. in how we

  874. interact with

  875. the world,

  876. and thirdly,

  877. in how we

  878. serve those

  879. in need.

  880. So let's

  881. read,

  882. if you could

  883. read with

  884. me,

  885. verses 19

  886. to 20.

  887. My dear

  888. brothers and

  889. sisters,

  890. take note

  891. of this.

  892. Everyone

  893. should be

  894. quick to

  895. listen,

  896. slow to

  897. speak,

  898. and slow

  899. to become

  900. angry,

  901. because human

  902. anger does

  903. not produce

  904. the righteousness

  905. that God

  906. desires.

  907. James wants

  908. us to put

  909. God's word

  910. into practice

  911. when it

  912. comes to

  913. our responses

  914. to others

  915. and how we

  916. speak.

  917. Look down

  918. at verse 26.

  919. There he

  920. says,

  921. those who

  922. consider

  923. themselves

  924. religious,

  925. and yet

  926. do not

  927. keep a

  928. tight rein

  929. on their

  930. tongues,

  931. deceive

  932. themselves,

  933. and their

  934. religion is

  935. worthless.

  936. So we see

  937. James is

  938. pretty serious

  939. about this.

  940. Of all

  941. the parts

  942. of the

  943. body,

  944. James

  945. accredits

  946. the tongue

  947. with the

  948. most potential

  949. for destruction.

  950. If you

  951. can skip

  952. forward there

  953. in your

  954. Bible to

  955. James

    James 3 chapter mention

  956. chapter 3

  957. and verse

  958. 6 onwards.

  959. And here

  960. we can

  961. see how

  962. James really

  963. does not

  964. mince his

  965. words when

  966. it comes

  967. to the

  968. tongue.

  969. Chapter 3

  970. verse 6.

  971. The tongue

  972. also is a

  973. fire, a

  974. world of

  975. evil among

  976. the parts

  977. of the

  978. body.

  979. It corrupts

  980. the whole

  981. body, sets

  982. the whole

  983. course of

  984. one's life

  985. on fire,

  986. and is

  987. itself set

  988. on fire

  989. by hell.

  990. Verse 8.

  991. So James

  992. could not

  993. be clearer

  994. about the

  995. harmful

  996. potential

  997. of our

  998. words to

  999. wreak havoc

  1000. in other

  1001. people's

  1002. lives.

  1003. And so

  1004. he gives

  1005. this practical

  1006. template to

  1007. use when

  1008. speaking to

  1009. others.

  1010. And this

  1011. is it.

  1012. Be quick

  1013. to listen,

  1014. slow to

  1015. speak, and

  1016. slow to

  1017. anger.

  1018. When someone

  1019. says something

  1020. that we

  1021. disagree with,

  1022. or something

  1023. that is

  1024. offensive to

  1025. us, those

  1026. times responding

  1027. with grace and

  1028. avoiding anger is

  1029. one of the

  1030. hardest things

  1031. to do.

  1032. But James

  1033. orders us to

  1034. do it.

  1035. Now, the

  1036. author, John

  1037. Bloom, can

  1038. use this

  1039. verse to

  1040. come up with

  1041. the following

  1042. process when

  1043. we go to

  1044. speak.

  1045. And this

  1046. is his

  1047. process.

  1048. Listen,

  1049. wait, and

  1050. respond.

  1051. So A,

  1052. listen.

  1053. We are to

  1054. listen well

  1055. so that we

  1056. really do

  1057. understand where

  1058. the other

  1059. person is

  1060. coming from.

  1061. Listening well,

  1062. even when you

  1063. don't agree,

  1064. is a mark of

  1065. humility that

  1066. shows the

  1067. other person

  1068. that you are

  1069. genuinely

  1070. thinking about

  1071. them.

  1072. B, we

  1073. need to

  1074. patiently

  1075. wait.

  1076. We must

  1077. be slow

  1078. to speak.

  1079. In the

  1080. moment, we

  1081. all know our

  1082. natural impulse

  1083. to say things

  1084. that we regret

  1085. later on.

  1086. Have a look at

  1087. Proverbs 10,

    Proverbs 10:19

  1088. verse 19 here.

  1089. It's on the

  1090. board.

  1091. Sin is not

  1092. ended by

  1093. multiplying

  1094. words, but

  1095. the prudent

  1096. hold their

  1097. tongues.

  1098. So we

  1099. must wait

  1100. before responding.

  1101. And as we

  1102. wait, let's

  1103. use that

  1104. time to

  1105. pray and

  1106. ask God

  1107. for wisdom

  1108. and discernment

  1109. and how

  1110. best to

  1111. speak.

  1112. Lastly, see,

  1113. we are to

  1114. respond with

  1115. grace.

  1116. Ephesians 4,

  1117. 29 exhorts

  1118. us to speak

  1119. in a way that

  1120. gives grace to

  1121. those who

  1122. hear.

  1123. Proverbs 16,

  1124. 24 says,

  1125. Gracious words

  1126. are like a

  1127. honeycomb.

  1128. Sweetness to

  1129. the soul

  1130. and health

  1131. to the body.

  1132. It may be

  1133. that our

  1134. gracious words

  1135. are still

  1136. tough to

  1137. hear, and

  1138. that's often

  1139. necessary, as

  1140. long as they

  1141. are spoken in

  1142. love, humility

  1143. and honesty.

  1144. And the

  1145. result of

  1146. all this

  1147. listening,

  1148. waiting, and

  1149. gracious

  1150. responding is

  1151. in the rest

  1152. of verse 19.

  1153. We are

  1154. consequently

  1155. slow to

  1156. anger.

  1157. We are

  1158. calmer, more

  1159. measured, less

  1160. impulsive.

  1161. We're actively

  1162. avoiding the

  1163. type of anger

  1164. that does not

  1165. please our

  1166. Father.

  1167. So listen,

  1168. wait, and

  1169. respond.

  1170. That's a godly

  1171. principle to

  1172. speak by.

  1173. And that's

  1174. James' first

  1175. implication for

  1176. the life of

  1177. a believer.

  1178. His second

  1179. is right here.

  1180. It is how we

  1181. interact with

  1182. the world.

  1183. And James is

  1184. asking us here

  1185. not to take on

  1186. the morals and

  1187. values of this

  1188. world that

  1189. are contrary

  1190. to scripture.

  1191. James continues

  1192. to say in

  1193. verse 21,

  1194. look there

  1195. with me,

  1196. therefore,

  1197. or in

  1198. light of all

  1199. these anger

  1200. avoidance

  1201. strategies,

  1202. get rid of

  1203. all moral

  1204. filth and

  1205. the evil

  1206. that is so

  1207. prevalent,

  1208. and humbly

  1209. accept the

  1210. word planted

  1211. in you,

  1212. which can

  1213. save you.

  1214. And he

  1215. also calls

  1216. us in

  1217. verse 27,

  1218. to keep

  1219. ourselves

  1220. from being

  1221. polluted by

  1222. the world.

  1223. So James

  1224. says,

  1225. watch out.

  1226. Watch out

  1227. for the

  1228. twisted morals

  1229. and the

  1230. widespread

  1231. evil that

  1232. you are

  1233. seeing and

  1234. hearing all

  1235. around you

  1236. on the

  1237. radio,

  1238. in the

  1239. newspaper,

  1240. the TV.

  1241. They don't

  1242. produce the

  1243. righteous life

  1244. that God

  1245. desires.

  1246. Don't let

  1247. them take

  1248. root in your

  1249. heart so

  1250. that they

  1251. become your

  1252. morals.

  1253. And I

  1254. don't know

  1255. which ones

  1256. you are

  1257. perceptible

  1258. to,

  1259. but these

  1260. are the

  1261. ones that

  1262. I seem

  1263. to be

  1264. constantly

  1265. fighting

  1266. against in

  1267. my own

  1268. mind.

  1269. The morals

  1270. of pursuing

  1271. wealth,

  1272. striving for

  1273. self-promotion,

  1274. living for

  1275. comfort and

  1276. pleasure,

  1277. tolerance of

  1278. every new

  1279. idea.

  1280. We need

  1281. to be careful

  1282. about this.

  1283. How are

  1284. the world's

  1285. values quietly

  1286. taking root

  1287. in our

  1288. hearts and

  1289. minds?

  1290. James has

  1291. a solution

  1292. to this.

  1293. Have a

  1294. look.

  1295. It's in

  1296. the second

  1297. half of

  1298. verse 21.

  1299. He says,

  1300. Humbly

  1301. accept the

  1302. word planted

  1303. in you,

  1304. which can

  1305. save you.

  1306. The morals

  1307. and evils

  1308. in the

  1309. world today

  1310. that are

  1311. widely

  1312. accepted,

  1313. they cannot

  1314. lead us

  1315. to the

  1316. truth that

  1317. will save

  1318. us.

  1319. That is

  1320. the gospel

  1321. of Jesus

  1322. Christ who

  1323. died for

  1324. us.

  1325. Now,

  1326. I'm not

  1327. saying that

  1328. when you

  1329. go home

  1330. from church

  1331. this afternoon

  1332. you're going

  1333. to rip

  1334. out that

  1335. skybox and

  1336. throw it

  1337. in the

  1338. bin,

  1339. and that

  1340. you're not

  1341. going to

  1342. read the

  1343. Irish Times

  1344. anymore,

  1345. and that

  1346. you're never

  1347. going to

  1348. listen to

  1349. RT News

  1350. radio again.

  1351. No,

  1352. no,

  1353. I'm not

  1354. saying any

  1355. of that.

  1356. Our aim

  1357. is not to

  1358. prevent

  1359. ourselves

  1360. from hearing

  1361. the voice

  1362. of the

  1363. world,

  1364. but instead

  1365. to take

  1366. all that we

  1367. do here

  1368. in the

  1369. world,

  1370. and put

  1371. it through

  1372. the filter

  1373. of the

  1374. word,

  1375. because only

  1376. here can

  1377. we discern

  1378. what is

  1379. good and

  1380. true.

  1381. And when

  1382. we read

  1383. what God

  1384. says to

  1385. be truth

  1386. and life

  1387. and his

  1388. word,

  1389. James says

  1390. that we

  1391. then have

  1392. to humbly

  1393. accept it.

  1394. This means

  1395. that we

  1396. have to

  1397. humbly

  1398. acknowledge

  1399. that the

  1400. maker of

  1401. life knows

  1402. what is

  1403. truly right

  1404. and wrong,

  1405. not us,

  1406. even

  1407. though there

  1408. are many

  1409. things that

  1410. are hard

  1411. to understand.

  1412. In a

  1413. world of

  1414. ever-evolving

  1415. morals,

  1416. one thing

  1417. stands true

  1418. throughout the

  1419. ages,

  1420. immovable,

  1421. solid,

  1422. and sure.

  1423. It's the

  1424. word of

  1425. God.

  1426. And let

  1427. us cling

  1428. to it

  1429. for dear

  1430. life as

  1431. we navigate

  1432. through this

  1433. broken world.

  1434. Finally,

  1435. and briefly,

  1436. the third

  1437. implication of

  1438. being a

  1439. doer of

  1440. God's word

  1441. is in

  1442. how we

  1443. serve

  1444. those in

  1445. need.

  1446. Look at

  1447. verse 27

  1448. with me.

  1449. Religion

  1450. that God

  1451. our Father

  1452. accepts as

  1453. pure and

  1454. faultless is

  1455. this,

  1456. to look

  1457. after orphans

  1458. and widows

  1459. in their

  1460. distress,

  1461. and to

  1462. keep oneself

  1463. from being

  1464. polluted by

  1465. the world.

  1466. So after

  1467. telling us

  1468. how worthless

  1469. our devotion

  1470. to God

  1471. is,

  1472. if we

  1473. fail to

  1474. put God's

  1475. word into

  1476. practice in

  1477. our lives,

  1478. James now

  1479. gives us an

  1480. example of

  1481. the opposite

  1482. as such.

  1483. This is the

  1484. type of

  1485. devotion that

  1486. puts his

  1487. word into

  1488. practice,

  1489. and is

  1490. entirely pure

  1491. and worthwhile.

  1492. This is the

  1493. type of

  1494. devotion that

  1495. gives him

  1496. pleasure.

  1497. So let's

  1498. look at his

  1499. example where

  1500. he studied

  1501. this.

  1502. He says,

  1503. we must

  1504. look after

  1505. orphans and

  1506. widows in

  1507. distress.

  1508. You know

  1509. what James

  1510. says?

  1511. If we're

  1512. followers of

  1513. Jesus,

  1514. we must

  1515. follow Jesus'

  1516. footsteps to

  1517. the homes of

  1518. the broken,

  1519. the weary,

  1520. the downcast,

  1521. those who in

  1522. our day are

  1523. left behind by

  1524. society.

  1525. And the

  1526. question must

  1527. be asked,

  1528. if I am so

  1529. caught up in

  1530. my busy life,

  1531. my family,

  1532. my close

  1533. circle of

  1534. friends,

  1535. but cannot

  1536. look outside of

  1537. that bubble of

  1538. mine to see a

  1539. broken,

  1540. needy world,

  1541. then how can I

  1542. claim to obey

  1543. Jesus when he

  1544. says in

  1545. Matthew 25,

  1546. and it's on the

  1547. board here,

  1548. whatever you

  1549. did for the

  1550. least of

  1551. these,

  1552. you did for

  1553. me.

  1554. For I was

  1555. hungry,

  1556. you gave me

  1557. something to

  1558. eat.

  1559. I was thirsty,

  1560. and you gave

  1561. me something to

  1562. drink.

  1563. I was a

  1564. stranger,

  1565. and you

  1566. invited me

  1567. in.

  1568. I needed

  1569. clothes,

  1570. and you

  1571. clothed me.

  1572. I was sick,

  1573. and you

  1574. looked after

  1575. me.

  1576. I was in

  1577. prison,

  1578. and you

  1579. came to

  1580. visit me.

  1581. This was

  1582. Jesus'

  1583. approach to

  1584. serving others.

  1585. He says,

  1586. go out,

  1587. find the

  1588. lowest of

  1589. the low,

  1590. and meet

  1591. their needs

  1592. in my name,

  1593. for my

  1594. sake.

  1595. Whatever you

  1596. do for them,

  1597. you're doing

  1598. for me.

  1599. I have to

  1600. admit,

  1601. this has been

  1602. a huge

  1603. challenge to

  1604. me this

  1605. week,

  1606. in my own

  1607. application of

  1608. these words

  1609. to my life.

  1610. As I think,

  1611. well, do I

  1612. actually have

  1613. time for

  1614. those who

  1615. are suffering?

  1616. The orphans,

  1617. the widows,

  1618. the sick,

  1619. the elderly,

  1620. the weary,

  1621. the mourning.

  1622. Are you and

  1623. I giving

  1624. freely out of

  1625. the abundance

  1626. that we have

  1627. received from

  1628. the Father?

  1629. To be a

  1630. doer of the

  1631. word, we

  1632. need to be

  1633. actively seeking

  1634. out opportunities

  1635. to do this.

  1636. And this

  1637. requires serious

  1638. action.

  1639. In

  1640. finishing,

  1641. let me just

  1642. summarize what

  1643. we've learned

  1644. from God's

  1645. word today.

  1646. Let us

  1647. not just

  1648. listen to

  1649. the word,

  1650. and like a

  1651. man who

  1652. walks away

  1653. from the

  1654. mirror,

  1655. forget

  1656. everything we

  1657. have heard.

  1658. Instead,

  1659. let us look

  1660. intently and

  1661. continually into

  1662. the word,

  1663. not forgetting

  1664. what we have

  1665. heard, but

  1666. doing it,

  1667. and in

  1668. turn,

  1669. experiencing

  1670. the blessedness

  1671. that comes,

  1672. not from

  1673. conforming to

  1674. the world,

  1675. but from

  1676. acting on

  1677. every word

  1678. of God.

  1679. let us

  1680. listen,

  1681. wait,

  1682. and respond

  1683. with grace

  1684. when we

  1685. speak.

  1686. Let us

  1687. put everything

  1688. we hear in

  1689. the world

  1690. through the

  1691. filter of

  1692. the word,

  1693. and let us

  1694. reach out in

  1695. love to

  1696. those who

  1697. are in need

  1698. around us.

  1699. Let's be

  1700. doers of the

  1701. word,

  1702. in

  1703. carigaline

  1704. and around.

  1705. Let's be

  1706. like trees

  1707. planted by

  1708. streams of

  1709. water,

  1710. which yield

  1711. its fruit

  1712. in season,

  1713. and whose

  1714. leaves do

  1715. not wither,

  1716. whatever they

  1717. do prospers.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. I think

  1720. that we

  1721. should take

  1722. a practical

  1723. step right

  1724. now to

  1725. do what

  1726. we've heard

  1727. in the

  1728. word today,

  1729. so I'm

  1730. just going

  1731. to leave

  1732. a time

  1733. of reflection

  1734. for all

  1735. of us

  1736. to talk

  1737. to the

  1738. Lord and

  1739. to ask

  1740. him what

  1741. do we

  1742. need to

  1743. change in

  1744. our lives

  1745. as a result

  1746. of this.

  1747. So I'm

  1748. going to

  1749. play a

  1750. song in

  1751. the

  1752. background.

  1753. If you

  1754. know it,

  1755. feel free

  1756. to join

  1757. in and

  1758. sing,

  1759. but you

  1760. can just

  1761. stay in

  1762. your seats

  1763. and meditate

  1764. and really

  1765. ask the

  1766. Lord where

  1767. to go from

  1768. here.

  1769. So Lord,

  1770. we just

  1771. ask for

  1772. your help

  1773. now.

  1774. We ask

  1775. for your

  1776. help not

  1777. just to

  1778. listen to

  1779. your word,

  1780. but to

  1781. do what

  1782. it says.

  1783. Right

  1784. now,

  1785. Holy Spirit,

  1786. please show

  1787. us what

  1788. needs to

  1789. be changed

  1790. in our

  1791. lives.

  1792. We ask

  1793. for your

  1794. power to

  1795. change and

  1796. to become

  1797. more like

  1798. Christ.

  1799. Amen.
