  1. It's on page 1214, 1214.

  2. James chapter 2, starting at verse 14.

    James 2 chapter mention

  3. Page 1214.

  4. Let's read.

  5. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?

  6. Can such faith save them?

  7. Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.

  8. If one of you says to them, go in peace, keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?

  9. In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

  10. But someone will say, you have faith, I have deeds.

  11. Show me your faith without deeds and I will show you my faith by my deeds.

  12. You believe that there is one God.

  13. Good.

  14. Even the demons believe that and shudder.

  15. You foolish person.

  16. Do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?

  17. Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?

  18. You see that his faith and his actions were working together.

  19. And his faith was made complete by what he did.

  20. And the scripture was fulfilled that says,

  21. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

  22. And he was called God's friend.

  23. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

  24. In the same way, was not Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies

  25. and sent them off in a different direction?

  26. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

  27. I'm going to ask Jason now.

  28. He's going to come and preach this morning.

  29. Thanks, Jason.

  30. I'm just going to pass around a pen or two.

  31. Anybody like a pen?

  32. Well, I want to thank Johnny and the elders for entrusting this responsibility to me this morning.

  33. It is no small thing to entrust somebody with the ministry of the word.

  34. And so I hope to serve you well this morning as we look into God's word.

  35. We have been here since this past Wednesday.

  36. And we have been staying with the Campbells.

  37. And the hospitality here in Ireland is amazing.

  38. We have not only been at their home, but we've been at several other homes.

  39. And I think I have eaten more in the last five days than the last five months combined.

  40. So thank you so much for your kindness and your hospitality.

  41. We've been drinking gallons, it seems like, gallons of tea.

  42. Or liters, I guess.

  43. Is that what I would say here?

  44. Liters of tea?

  45. But it's just been wonderful.

  46. Pints.

  47. A lot.

  48. A lot of it.

  49. So it has just been wonderful.

  50. Thank you so much for your hospitality.

  51. As Johnny said, we'll be in James 2 this morning.

  52. If you haven't already turned in your copy of the scriptures to James 2,

  53. you can do that now.

  54. A couple of years ago, I read a very interesting story about a man named Wolfgang Beltracchi.

  55. Perhaps some of you have heard about him.

  56. Wolfgang's paintings brought him millions and millions of dollars during a career that spanned nearly 40 years.

  57. His paintings made their way into museums, galleries, and private collections all over the world.

  58. Now, what is most notable about the work of Wolfgang Beltracchi is that all of his paintings are fake.

  59. And what makes him an unusual forger is that he didn't copy the paintings of great artists,

  60. but he created new works which he imagined some well-known artist might have painted

  61. or which might have gotten lost.

  62. Here are the closing two sentences of the article that I read.

  63. It said,

  64. Connoisseurs and dealers acknowledge that Beltracchi is the most successful art forger of our time,

  65. perhaps of all time.

  66. Brilliant not only as a painter,

  67. but as a con man of epic proportions.

  68. Can you imagine what it would feel like to pay millions for a painting only to find out that it's a fake?

  69. No one I've ever known likes to be tricked or deceived.

  70. In fact, it makes us feel silly, maybe even ashamed when it happens to us.

  71. And of course, deception can bring with it a great cost.

  72. Like those who paid a tremendous sum of money for a work of art that was not what it claimed to be.

  73. You see, being fooled can have devastating consequences, can't it?

  74. Now consider this.

  75. As awful.

  76. As awful as it would be to lose money.

  77. There is absolutely nothing more devastating than if you were to find out in the last day

  78. that you fooled yourself

  79. about the nature of genuine faith in Christ.

  80. How can you know?

  81. How can you know if your faith is genuine?

  82. How do you know that you're a true believer and not a fake?

  83. How can you determine whether or not you're being fooled by a false or counterfeit faith?

  84. I want to invite you friends to look with me at God's Word.

  85. And together, we will find answers to these very important questions.

  86. We want to know that our faith in Christ is genuine.

  87. And if you're here this morning and you don't know Christ,

  88. you've never turned in repentance and faith to believe in Jesus,

  89. trusting in Him alone for the forgiveness of your sins,

  90. then I want you to understand what it means to truly believe.

  91. Our text, James 2, 14-26,

  92. this text answers two major questions.

  93. And here is the first.

  94. Question number one.

  95. What is true faith?

  96. This is a fundamental and foundational question

  97. that we must answer and we must answer it correctly

  98. so we go to God's Word.

  99. Look at verse 14 again.

  100. What good is it, my brothers and sisters,

  101. if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?

  102. Can such faith save them?

  103. So I want you to notice a couple of things here.

  104. First is this.

  105. True faith, true faith is more than a mere announcement.

  106. That's found in verse 14.

  107. James begins this section with two questions

  108. and both of them expect the same answer.

  109. He asks, does faith without works help a person?

  110. The answer is no.

  111. Then he asks, does faith without good works save a person?

  112. Again, the answer is no.

  113. There is a very important word in verse 14 that you must see.

  114. James writes, if someone claims to have faith.

  115. James is not suggesting that this individual actually has faith.

  116. He's not talking about someone whose faith has been confirmed as genuine.

  117. He's simply referring to someone who regularly claims to have faith.

  118. Does simply making a claim of faith without a lifestyle of good works save a person?

  119. And the answer is no.

  120. This verse, and really this whole text,

  121. has been one of the most controversial and misunderstood in all of Scripture.

  122. The question is often asked,

  123. is James saying that works save a person?

  124. Or we might ask the question this way,

  125. is James disagreeing with the Apostle Paul?

  126. Here's a quick sampling of what the Apostle Paul wrote.

  127. You heard some of it already this morning.

  128. In Romans chapter 3, verse 28,

    Romans 3:28

  129. we find this,

  130. for we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

  131. In Romans chapter 4, verse 5,

    Romans 4:5

  132. this is what we find,

  133. and to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly,

  134. his faith is counted as righteousness.

  135. And then in Ephesians chapter 2, verses 8 and 9,

    Ephesians 2:8

  136. for by grace you have been saved through faith,

  137. and this is not your own doing.

  138. It is the gift of God,

  139. not a result of works,

  140. so that no one may boast.

  141. You can see from these texts why some confusion may exist,

  142. but we need to understand the purpose of each writer.

  143. Simply put, Paul is writing,

  144. Paul is writing about our declaration of faith,

  145. and James is writing about our demonstration of faith.

  146. One well-known pastor in the States wrote something very helpful

  147. in his commentary on James.

  148. This is what he wrote.

  149. Listen carefully to this.

  150. There is no real contradiction between James and Paul regarding faith.

  151. Paul's teaching about faith and works focuses on the time before conversion,

  152. and James' focus is after conversion.

  153. Paul was fighting against tradition which promoted a false works salvation.

  154. James was fighting against a light or trivial or easy faith

  155. which minimized the necessity of works after coming to Christ.

  156. Paul says works cannot bring us to Christ.

  157. James says after we come to Christ,

  158. they are imperative.

  159. In fact,

  160. in fact,

  161. in fact,

  162. in fact,

  163. brothers and sisters,

  164. the Apostle Paul actually makes the very same point that James is making

  165. in the text that Alex read for us earlier.

  166. After Paul wrote those wonderful verses about faith alone

  167. as the basis for our salvation in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  168. he followed it immediately with chapter 2, verse 10.

  169. For we are God's handiwork,

  170. created in Christ Jesus to do good works

  171. which God prepared in advance for us to do.

  172. And so you heard it said already,

  173. Paul and James would agree that counterfeit faith

  174. makes all kinds of statements and claims,

  175. but never,

  176. never supports those words with actions.

  177. In contrast,

  178. true faith is demonstrated

  179. by a life of good works.

  180. Paul's emphasis on salvation by faith alone

  181. was intended to correct our natural desire

  182. to earn salvation by means of our own effort and good works.

  183. As Paul came face to face with pharisaical legalism,

  184. the teaching that our works affect our standing before God,

  185. he emphasized the truth that nothing in us,

  186. nothing in us can merit God's favor.

  187. Only Jesus Christ can earn right standing with God for us.

  188. And this right standing comes to us

  189. through faith alone in Christ alone.

  190. What Paul makes clear in Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  191. is that we are not saved by works,

  192. but we are saved to works,

  193. or for works.

  194. Works do not contribute a thing to our justification,

  195. but works are the result and aim of our justification.

  196. Friends, James as well is insisting

  197. that genuine faith always produces righteous works.

  198. Now, I want to be as clear as I can be,

  199. these works,

  200. these works do not make us righteous before God,

  201. but they demonstrate the reality

  202. that we have already been made righteous

  203. before God in Jesus Christ.

  204. To summarize this first observation,

  205. brothers and sisters,

  206. the genuineness of a profession of Jesus Christ

  207. as Savior and Lord

  208. is evidenced more by what a person does

  209. than by what he claims.

  210. So what is true faith?

  211. It is more than a mere announcement.

  212. And a second observation here,

  213. true faith is more than a statement of sympathy.

  214. It's more than a statement of sympathy.

  215. Look at verse 15.

  216. Suppose a brother or a sister

  217. is without clothes and daily food.

  218. If one of you says to them,

  219. go in peace,

  220. be warm and well fed,

  221. but does nothing about their physical needs,

  222. what good is it?

  223. In the same way,

  224. faith by itself,

  225. if it is not accompanied by action,

  226. well, it's dead.

  227. As James so often does,

  228. he provides a powerful illustration.

  229. In preaching through James

  230. and studying through James,

  231. there are these moments

  232. when you're reading

  233. and you read an illustration

  234. that he offers

  235. and at least if you're like me,

  236. I go,

  237. ouch,

  238. that hurts.

  239. I think he's talking about me.

  240. Imagine you're sitting in church.

  241. Week after week,

  242. the same man sits down beside you.

  243. You notice that his clothes are torn.

  244. They're really insufficient

  245. to keep him warm,

  246. dry,

  247. clean,

  248. and protected.

  249. You also notice

  250. that as each week goes by,

  251. he looks like he's malnourished

  252. and he's becoming very unhealthy.

  253. So you begin to wonder,

  254. what should I do?

  255. Clearly,

  256. this man has a need.

  257. What should I do?

  258. And here is what you decide.

  259. You approach him

  260. and you begin to speak

  261. and this is what you say.

  262. Brother,

  263. you're not looking good.

  264. It looks like you've fallen

  265. upon hard times.

  266. You need help.

  267. So may God be with you this week.

  268. Go.

  269. Find some clothes

  270. and warm yourself.

  271. And then you turn

  272. and walk away.

  273. Well, of course,

  274. this man would be confused

  275. thinking,

  276. well,

  277. don't you think

  278. I would have already

  279. clothed myself

  280. and fed myself

  281. if I could?

  282. What if this

  283. is all you did,

  284. friend?

  285. The expression

  286. of the Christian love

  287. that you claim to possess

  288. has motivated you

  289. to do nothing more

  290. than offer

  291. religious platitudes

  292. to someone in obvious need.

  293. If that is your only response,

  294. then according to God's Word,

  295. how should you

  296. interpret your own actions?

  297. The answer is in verse 17.

  298. If you offer

  299. a sympathetic statement

  300. without actually doing

  301. anything loving,

  302. without actually meeting the need,

  303. then your faith is dead.

  304. And please understand,

  305. dead faith is not only lifeless,

  306. but it's useless.

  307. It serves no purpose.

  308. Oh, friend,

  309. this is not what God

  310. redeemed you for.

  311. Genuine faith is more than

  312. feeling compassion

  313. for someone in need.

  314. The Apostle John

  315. challenges us

  316. in 1 John 3,

  317. but if anyone

  318. has the world's goods

  319. and sees his brother

  320. in need,

  321. then listen to this expression.

  322. Yet closes his heart

  323. against him.

  324. How does God's love

  325. abide in him?

  326. Little children,

  327. let us not love

  328. in word or talk,

  329. but in deed

  330. and in truth.

  331. You see,

  332. real faith

  333. is not seen

  334. in statements,

  335. but in action.

  336. Counterfeit faith

  337. stops with a promise

  338. to pray.

  339. Real faith

  340. starts by not only

  341. praying for someone

  342. in need,

  343. but providing them

  344. with a meal

  345. as well.

  346. Counterfeit faith

  347. stops with

  348. sympathetic words.

  349. Real faith

  350. suffers

  351. to help

  352. someone in need.

  353. Counterfeit faith

  354. stops with

  355. empty words

  356. of compassion.

  357. Real faith

  358. starts

  359. with loving

  360. actions.

  361. I try to explain

  362. that to my children

  363. all the time.

  364. You can say

  365. you're sorry

  366. to your brother

  367. or sister

  368. a hundred times,

  369. but if you turn around

  370. and do the same thing

  371. over and over again,

  372. your words

  373. will ring hollow

  374. when you say

  375. I love you

  376. or I forgive you

  377. that needs to be

  378. followed by actions

  379. that demonstrate

  380. the validity

  381. of your words.

  382. What is true faith?

  383. Well,

  384. it's more than

  385. a mere announcement.

  386. It's more than

  387. a statement of sympathy.

  388. And then a third

  389. observation here.

  390. True faith

  391. is more than

  392. a declaration

  393. of doctrine.

  394. Look at verse 18.

  395. But someone

  396. will say

  397. you have faith

  398. I have deeds.

  399. Show me your faith

  400. without deeds

  401. and I will show you

  402. my faith

  403. by my deeds.

  404. You believe

  405. that there is

  406. one God.

  407. Good.

  408. Even the demons

  409. believe that

  410. and shudder.

  411. You foolish

  412. person.

  413. Do you want

  414. evidence

  415. that faith

  416. without deeds

  417. is useless?

  418. James anticipates

  419. an objection

  420. we might all have

  421. to what he's teaching us.

  422. We might suggest

  423. that claiming faith

  424. is no different

  425. than demonstrating faith.

  426. It's like we're

  427. saying to James,

  428. James,

  429. stop looking

  430. so closely

  431. at what I'm doing.

  432. Don't you know

  433. what I believe?

  434. You see,

  435. a lot of people

  436. assume that

  437. making a declaration

  438. of faith

  439. is enough.

  440. But friends,

  441. genuine faith

  442. is more than

  443. a declaration

  444. even if that

  445. declaration

  446. includes

  447. correct doctrine.

  448. James'

  449. next words,

  450. verse 19,

  451. are a shocking

  452. illustration

  453. of this truth.

  454. Look at verse 19.

  455. Do you realize

  456. this morning,

  457. as you look

  458. at this text,

  459. do you realize

  460. this morning

  461. that no demon

  462. is an atheist?

  463. Every demon

  464. believes in God.

  465. Do you realize

  466. that no demon

  467. is a polytheist?

  468. Every demon

  469. believes

  470. there is

  471. one true God.

  472. It's frightening

  473. to think

  474. that there are

  475. probably questions

  476. that you and I

  477. would get wrong

  478. on a theological

  479. exam

  480. that demons

  481. know.

  482. But James

  483. is making

  484. a point here.

  485. It's a warning.

  486. So let me

  487. offer this

  488. warning to you,

  489. brothers and

  490. sisters.

  491. This,

  492. this is a

  493. church that

  494. believes

  495. in the importance

  496. of right doctrine

  497. and rich theology,

  498. theology,

  499. which is

  500. wonderful.

  501. Most of you

  502. care deeply

  503. about what the

  504. Bible says,

  505. and you should.

  506. But be careful.

  507. A commitment

  508. to biblical

  509. knowledge alone

  510. does not

  511. equal true

  512. faith.

  513. No amount

  514. of biblical

  515. knowledge

  516. guarantees

  517. genuine

  518. faith.

  519. faith.

  520. So I

  521. ask you,

  522. what are you

  523. trusting in

  524. for the

  525. forgiveness

  526. of your

  527. sin and

  528. for eternal

  529. peace with

  530. God?

  531. Are you

  532. trusting in

  533. the depth

  534. of your

  535. biblical

  536. knowledge?

  537. Is your

  538. confidence

  539. in facts

  540. you have

  541. learned

  542. or have

  543. you placed

  544. your faith

  545. in the

  546. person

  547. and work

  548. of Jesus

  549. Christ

  550. alone?

  551. our first

  552. major question,

  553. what is

  554. true faith?

  555. And James

  556. primarily

  557. answers that

  558. in this

  559. section by

  560. telling you

  561. what it's

  562. not or

  563. what it's

  564. not limited

  565. to.

  566. But then he

  567. expounds.

  568. Question number

  569. two,

  570. what does

  571. true faith

  572. look like?

  573. And in

  574. explaining

  575. this,

  576. he defines

  577. the nature

  578. of saving

  579. faith.

  580. Look with

  581. me at

  582. verse 21.

  583. Was not

  584. our father

  585. Abraham

  586. considered

  587. righteous

  588. for what

  589. he did

  590. when he

  591. offered

  592. his son

  593. Isaac

  594. on the

  595. altar?

  596. You see

  597. that his

  598. faith and

  599. his actions

  600. were working

  601. together.

  602. And his

  603. faith was

  604. made complete

  605. by what he

  606. did.

  607. And the

  608. scripture was

  609. fulfilled that

  610. says Abraham

  611. believed God

  612. and it was

  613. credited to

  614. him as

  615. righteousness.

  616. And he

  617. was called

  618. God's

  619. friend.

  620. You see

  621. that a

  622. person is

  623. considered

  624. righteous by

  625. what they

  626. do and

  627. not by

  628. faith alone.

  629. In the

  630. same way,

  631. was not

  632. even Rahab

  633. the prostitute

  634. considered

  635. righteous for

  636. what she

  637. did when

  638. she gave

  639. lodging to

  640. the spies

  641. and sent

  642. them off in

  643. a different

  644. direction?

  645. As the

  646. body without

  647. the spirit

  648. is dead,

  649. so faith

  650. without deeds

  651. is dead.

  652. As James

  653. continues his

  654. discussion of

  655. living faith,

  656. he provides

  657. us with two

  658. role models

  659. who are

  660. very,

  661. very different

  662. from each

  663. other.

  664. The first

  665. is a

  666. patriarch who

  667. shows us

  668. what true

  669. faith looks

  670. like over a

  671. lifetime.

  672. The second

  673. is a

  674. prostitute.

  675. A

  676. prostitute

  677. who shows

  678. us what

  679. true faith

  680. looks like

  681. in a

  682. moment.

  683. The first

  684. example,

  685. true faith

  686. in the

  687. life of

  688. a patriarch.

  689. Abraham

  690. was the

  691. epitome

  692. of faith

  693. in God.

  694. And James

  695. begins with

  696. a question

  697. about his

  698. faith.

  699. And this

  700. is what

  701. he asks.

  702. Wasn't

  703. Abraham

  704. considered

  705. righteous

  706. for what

  707. he did?

  708. The ESV

  709. says it

  710. this way,

  711. wasn't

  712. Abraham

  713. justified

  714. by his

  715. works

  716. when he

  717. offered

  718. Isaac.

  719. Now,

  720. there are

  721. two meanings

  722. for the

  723. word justified.

  724. It can

  725. mean to

  726. be declared

  727. righteous,

  728. and that's

  729. probably how

  730. you typically

  731. think about

  732. it.

  733. But it

  734. can also

  735. mean this,

  736. to vindicate,

  737. to show,

  738. to prove

  739. righteousness.

  740. So the

  741. question becomes,

  742. didn't Abraham

  743. demonstrate his

  744. righteousness by

  745. the act of

  746. offering Isaac?

  747. Or,

  748. wasn't

  749. Abraham

  750. shown to

  751. be righteous

  752. by this

  753. act?

  754. If we

  755. were to

  756. take the

  757. time to

  758. turn to

  759. Genesis,

  760. here is

  761. what we

  762. would find

  763. explained

  764. about

  765. Abraham,

  766. and this

  767. is so

  768. important.

  769. In

  770. Genesis

  771. 22,

  772. God

  773. commanded

  774. Abraham

  775. to take

  776. his only

  777. son and

  778. offer him

  779. as a

  780. burnt

  781. offering.

  782. Abraham's

  783. response to

  784. God's

  785. command will

  786. show us

  787. whether

  788. Abraham

  789. truly

  790. believes

  791. in

  792. God,

  793. right?

  794. His

  795. works

  796. will

  797. demonstrate

  798. whether

  799. or not

  800. his

  801. faith

  802. is

  803. real.

  804. But

  805. remember,

  806. this

  807. command

  808. took place

  809. nearly

  810. 30 years

  811. after Abraham

  812. was

  813. declared

  814. righteous

  815. by God

  816. in

  817. Genesis

  818. 15.

  819. The

  820. command

  821. he has

  822. given

  823. now

  824. to

  825. sacrifice

  826. his

  827. son,

  828. well,

  829. it went

  830. against

  831. everything

  832. in

  833. him.

  834. His

  835. love

  836. for

  837. Isaac,

  838. his

  839. understanding

  840. of

  841. morality,

  842. his

  843. common

  844. sense,

  845. his

  846. dreams,

  847. but

  848. still he

  849. obeyed

  850. God.

  851. And in

  852. so doing,

  853. Abraham

  854. demonstrated

  855. that his

  856. faith was

  857. genuine

  858. or

  859. authentic.

  860. So,

  861. this is

  862. how it

  863. works.

  864. Abraham

  865. was

  866. declared

  867. righteous

  868. by faith

  869. alone,

  870. Genesis

  871. 15.

  872. But he

  873. was

  874. shown

  875. to be

  876. righteous

  877. by his

  878. act

  879. of faith

  880. in

  881. Genesis

  882. 22.

  883. That's

  884. precisely

  885. what the

  886. point is

  887. in

  888. James.

  889. So,

  890. back in

  891. James 2,

  892. we find

  893. that Abraham's

  894. life shows

  895. the important

  896. connections

  897. between faith

  898. and works.

  899. In the

  900. first part

  901. of verse

  902. 22,

  903. we find

  904. that faith

  905. and works

  906. were active

  907. together.

  908. They were

  909. active

  910. together.

  911. One

  912. pastor

  913. said it

  914. this way,

  915. faith

  916. isn't

  917. shy

  918. or

  919. timid.

  920. It

  921. doesn't

  922. like to

  923. be

  924. alone.

  925. Faith's

  926. constant

  927. companion

  928. is

  929. works.

  930. Abraham's

  931. works

  932. supported

  933. his

  934. faith.

  935. Then we

  936. see in

  937. the second

  938. part of

  939. verse

  940. 22,

  941. faith

  942. was

  943. brought

  944. to

  945. maturity

  946. through

  947. works.

  948. God

  949. was

  950. working.

  951. It's

  952. interesting, that's in the passive voice.

  953. God was working.

  954. God was working to bring Abraham's faith to a certain point of maturity.

  955. And he did this through his works.

  956. This is Philippians 1.6.

  957. God, who has begun a good work in you, he will bring it to completion.

  958. That's so encouraging.

  959. That we're not only saved by grace, but we're sanctified by grace.

  960. Your sanctification is not ultimately dependent upon your own effort, your own creativity, your own ingenuity.

  961. The God who saved you, who brought life into your spiritual death, is continuing to make you alive to good works which exalt and magnify Jesus Christ.

  962. In verse 23, we see that faith was demonstrated as genuine through works.

  963. Abraham's faith was counted or credited to him as righteousness.

  964. Nothing he did made him righteous.

  965. That came through faith alone in Jesus Christ, but the reality of his faith was evidenced through his works.

  966. Yes, Abraham believed God's promise of a son, but it wasn't until he was willing to offer that son on an altar that the genuineness of his faith was demonstrated.

  967. You see this often when someone is suffering.

  968. There's a Christian and they give every evidence of joy.

  969. And then you find out that they're ill.

  970. That there's some illness that will probably lead to death.

  971. And you see in their suffering a level of joy you could have never imagined.

  972. That suffering is proving the genuineness of their faith.

  973. Now look at verse 24.

  974. You see that a person is considered righteous or justified by what they do, their works, and not by faith alone.

  975. This statement answers the question posed in verse 14.

  976. Can faith without good works save a person?

  977. No, the answer is no.

  978. Not because works produce righteousness, but because saving faith will always produce righteous works.

  979. Abraham shows us true faith in the life of a patriarch, but the second example is quite different.

  980. Isn't it?

  981. Verse 25.

  982. True faith, not in the life of a patriarch, but in the life of a prostitute.

  983. Look at verse 25 again.

  984. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies

  985. and sent them off in a different direction?

  986. The example of Rahab continues the same point as the example of Abraham.

  987. But it would be difficult, wouldn't it, to put together two people with more striking differences.

  988. Abraham was a patriarch.

  989. Rahab was a prostitute.

  990. Abraham was moral.

  991. Rahab was immoral.

  992. Abraham was a man.

  993. Rahab was a woman.

  994. Abraham was a Jew.

  995. Rahab was a Gentile.

  996. Abraham was respected.

  997. Rahab was rejected.

  998. I love John Calvin's comment on James' use of these two examples.

  999. Listen to what he says.

1000. He designedly put together two persons so different in their character

1001. in order more clearly to show that no one,

1002. no one, whatever may have been his or her condition,

1003. nation or class in society,

1004. no one has ever been counted righteous without good works.

1005. It could be easy for us to dismiss Abraham's example as impossible for us.

1006. If you're like me, I tend to think this way.

1007. I think I could never be like Abraham.

1008. He was a friend of God.

1009. This passage could therefore lead us to discouragement.

  1010. We might worry.

1011. I haven't done any works of faith in the category of Abraham.

1012. So is there any hope for me?

  1013. Oh, friends, in Rahab,

1014. we are encouraged, aren't we?

1015. She was a wretched sinner.

1016. I can identify with that.

  1017. She has real problems.

  1018. She wasn't a model of perfection.

1019. But according to God's Word,

1020. she was a model of faith.

1021. Well, how do we know this?

1022. How do we know this?

1023. Is it because she told us?

1024. Is it because of the great theological work she wrote?

1025. Is it due to the clarity of her doctrinal confession?

  1026. No.

1027. No, it's because Scripture bears testimony to her life.

1028. Her actions demonstrated real, authentic, genuine, living faith.

  1029. Her works.

  1030. Her works.

1031. Her works declared louder than her words ever could that she believed God.

1032. When she protected the spies from their pursuers,

1033. her faith was revealed as genuine.

1034. I'm so encouraged that this is the way God works.

1035. There are those who I'll hear them share the gospel with someone.

1036. In fact, we were with our brother Shane in passage the other night

1037. and listened to him declare the gospel in a Bible study

1038. and I thought, this brother is so gifted.

1039. He's so clear in sharing the gospel.

  1040. I wish I had that gifting.

  1041. I wish I had that ability.

1042. And yet, I know from texts like this

1043. that God in His infinite and sovereign wisdom works in different ways.

1044. You may not have an eloquent testimony

1045. where you can share words beautifully with people,

1046. but it may be your life and the depth of your faith

1047. and your actions of love and kindness and grace to others

1048. that will announce to them the glory of the gospel

1049. and the transforming grace of Jesus Christ

1050. in ways that you would fail to do in the way you want to with your words.

1051. God works in both ways and we see this reality in our text.

1052. God works in both ways and we see this reality in our text.

1053. Verse 26 summarizes and illustrates the truth

1054. behind the examples of both Abraham and Raham.

1055. As the body without the spirit is dead,

1056. so faith without deeds is dead.

1057. A faith that doesn't work is no better than a corpse.

1058. Faith and works, like a body and spirit,

  1059. are inseparably connected.

1060. So in closing, friends, let me offer you two reminders.

1061. And I hope and pray that God's Spirit will work through His Word

  1062. to open your eyes.

1063. If you're being deceived this morning

1064. about the genuineness of your faith,

  1065. I pray you'll see that

1066. and turn in repentance and faith to Jesus Christ.

1067. So the first reminder, just quickly,

1068. salvation is by faith alone.

1069. Salvation is by faith alone.

1070. Your works in no way contribute to your standing before God.

1071. The only way you can be saved

1072. is by faith alone in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

1073. It's His completed work that is important.

1074. So have you ever renounced

1075. both your good deeds and your bad deeds

1076. and called out to Jesus for mercy?

  1077. Oh friend,

  1078. turn from your sin

1079. and receive Jesus Christ by faith this morning

  1080. and then rest.

  1081. You can stop running.

1082. The effort to be good enough

1083. in hopes that someday God will accept you,

  1084. you can stop.

1085. Jesus has run that race perfectly.

1086. He has crossed the finish line

1087. and now He will give you everything you need by faith.

1088. Remember, salvation is by faith alone.

1089. And then the second reminder,

1090. salvation is by a faith that is never alone.

1091. Salvation is by faith alone,

1092. but salvation is by a faith that is never alone.

1093. True, saving faith always works.

  1094. Genuine faith is demonstrated.

1095. Faith in Jesus Christ always results in a changed life.

1096. No works of righteousness can ever bring God's favor,

1097. but if God's favor has been given to you

1098. through faith in Jesus Christ,

1099. it will be revealed in your life.

1100. It was Jesus who said,

1101. by their fruits you will know them.

1102. The reality of your faith

1103. will be revealed in your actions.

1104. So let me just ask you,

1105. is your faith seen in your actions?

1106. Like just think through the last several days.

1107. What you believe is seen in how you behave.

1108. What is your life revealing about your faith?

1109. How is your faith in Jesus displayed in your marriage?

  1110. In your parenting?

1111. In your place of work?

  1112. With your neighbors?

1113. Friends, let this text serve as both a warning

  1114. and an encouragement.

1115. Be warned that faith without works is dead.

  1116. But be encouraged.

1117. If you see evidence of a living faith in your life,

1118. it means that you belong to God.

1119. He has made you new by the Holy Spirit

1120. and brought you into union with Jesus Christ

1121. and He will now use you in a thousand different ways

1122. every single day to glorify His name

1123. and point people to the life transforming power

1124. of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1125. This is a divine miracle from beginning to end.

1126. Only God can bring a sinner to genuine faith in Christ

1127. and only God can produce righteous deeds

1128. in those who are redeemed.

1129. Both the initiation of faith

1130. and the life of faith

1131. is the work of Almighty God.

  1132. So friends, marvel.

1133. Marvel at the good hand of God

1134. as He works in your life

1135. and the lives of your brothers and sisters.

  1136. Recognize God's hand.

1137. I would have to imagine it would be encouraging

1138. if you were to go to a fellow member in this church

1139. and to point out to them

1140. an evidence of God's grace in their life.

1141. Not as a way of puffing them up

1142. or tempting them to become proud or arrogant,

  1143. but to draw attention

1144. to the ongoing work of grace

1145. that is happening in the life

  1146. of every single Christian.

1147. let this text also motivate you.

1148. Let it motivate you to pray.

1149. Pray that God will rescue

1150. your lost friends and family members

1151. so they too can experience the joy

  1152. of genuine faith

  1153. and eternal rest

  1154. in Jesus Christ alone.

1155. Will you pray with me?

1156. Father, we thank You for Your Word.

  1157. It seems inadequate

  1158. to simply thank You

  1159. and yet

  1160. in our frailty

  1161. sometimes we

  1162. we're left with words

  1163. that seem inadequate.

1164. We know that Your Word is powerful.

1165. We know that when Your Spirit

  1166. accompanies Your Word

  1167. miracles happen

1168. particularly the miracle of regeneration.

  1169. So we ask You

1170. even in this moment, Father

1171. if there is someone here

  1172. who is not yet

  1173. who is not yet

  1174. tasted of the grace

1175. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  1176. through repentance and faith

  1177. Holy Spirit

1178. grant that to them even now

1179. for the person who may be deceiving themselves

  1180. Holy Spirit

1181. give them eyes to see

  1182. ears to hear

1183. and a heart to receive

  1184. the hard truth

  1185. that their faith

  1186. is not genuine

  1187. but then immediately

1188. lead them to the hope

1189. that is found in Jesus.

1190. And I pray that my brothers and sisters

  1191. here would be encouraged

  1192. as they see

  1193. evidence

  1194. of the ongoing work

  1195. of the Spirit

  1196. in their life

1197. that they wouldn't be discouraged

1198. but that they would be encouraged

1199. to see that as evidence

  1200. of genuine faith

  1201. the ongoing work

  1202. of the Holy Spirit

1203. the continual work of grace

  1204. that You are doing

  1205. O triune God

  1206. in sanctifying us

1207. by Your Word and Spirit

  1208. So Father

  1209. we do indeed

  1210. thank You

  1211. for Your Word

  1212. and we pray now

  1213. that Your Spirit

  1214. would work

  1215. in ways

  1216. that only

  1217. the Spirit can work

  1218. to bring conviction

  1219. to bring comfort

  1220. to bring instruction

  1221. to bring clarity

  1222. we pray this all

  1223. in Jesus' name

  1224. Amen

  1225. Amen

  1226. Thank you Jason

1227. We're going to sing now
