  1. James chapter 3. Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

    James 3 chapter mention

  2. We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

  3. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.

  4. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

  5. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.

  6. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

  7. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.

  8. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

  9. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures are being tamed, and have been tamed by mankind.

  10. But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

  11. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings who have been made in God's likeness.

  12. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.

  13. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

  14. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?

  15. My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?

  16. Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

  17. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  18. Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

  19. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts,

  20. do not boast about it or deny the truth.

  21. Such wisdom does not come down from heaven, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

  22. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

  23. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure,

  24. then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

  25. Peace-makers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

  26. Peace-makers who sow in peace.

  27. Thanks, Chris.

  28. Let's keep our Bibles open and we're going to pray.

  29. Psalm 19, verse 14.

    Psalms 19:14

  30. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. What am I?

  34. I can start wars, break marriages, divide families, destroy churches.

  35. I can bring healing, redeem marriages, restore families, renew churches.

  36. I have the power to cause great evil and I have the power to do great good.

  37. What am I?

  38. Well, of course, we're talking about the tongue.

  39. Look at verse 9.

  40. With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father and with it we curse human beings who have been made in God's likeness.

  41. James has already introduced us to the use of our tongues.

  42. In fact, he said, if we claim to be a Christian.

  43. Have a look back at chapter 1, verse 19.

  44. If we claim to be a Christian.

  45. Verse 19.

  46. My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this.

  47. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.

  48. Verse 26.

  49. Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves and their religion is worthless.

  50. So how we use our tongue reveals if our faith is genuine.

  51. That was the theme of chapter 2, if you look at verse 14.

  52. Chapter 2, verse 14.

  53. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith, so they claim to be a Christian, but has no deeds?

  54. Can such faith save them?

  55. Well, the answer comes in verse 24.

  56. You see that a person, as you watch, as you look at a person, a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

  57. The mark of true Christianity is seen by what we do, how we live.

  58. And now in chapter 3, James gives us another example of what true Christianity looks like.

  59. And it all comes down to how we use our tongue.

  60. Three things we're going to look at.

  61. First, check your tongue.

  62. Check your tongue.

  63. Not surprisingly, James starts with teachers.

  64. Those who teach God's word, like pastors.

  65. Those who are responsible for the teaching of this church, the elders.

  66. Look at verse 1.

  67. Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers.

  68. Well, why is that?

  69. Because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

  70. Right now I'm teaching.

  71. And as I teach, I'm using my tongue.

  72. I'm saying a lot.

  73. I'm talking a lot.

  74. I'm going to be doing more speaking than listening.

  75. That means I have to be very careful.

  76. And as I teach, I've got great influence.

  77. The words that I use have influence.

  78. What I say can build up or tear down.

  79. What I teach can be of great good or of great evil.

  80. I need to check how I use my tongue.

  81. Because, look at the end of verse 1.

  82. You know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

  83. This is serious.

  84. The more I say, the more I will be responsible for.

  85. The more I'm responsible for, the more accountable before God I am.

  86. So it's crucial that I check out how I use my tongue.

  87. But it's not just teachers that James is concerned about.

  88. He's concerned for the whole church.

  89. Verse 2.

  90. We all stumble in many ways when it comes to using our tongue.

  91. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect.

  92. Able to keep their whole body in check.

  93. James is just so real and practical.

  94. He just gets straight to the issue.

  95. No messing about.

  96. Look, he says, we all stumble.

  97. We all mess up.

  98. We all fail to keep our tongue in check.

  99. But here's the encouragement.

  100. When we keep our tongue in check,

  101. our whole body is kept in check.

  102. If we can control the tongue,

  103. we can control our whole life.

  104. Proverbs 18 verse 21 tells us that

    Proverbs 18:21

  105. the tongue has the power of life and death.

  106. And those who love it will eat its fruit.

  107. Control the tongue

  108. and we control our whole life.

  109. Sam Albury uses a very helpful illustration in James.

  110. He talks about it like this.

  111. It's like James is inviting us into the doctor's surgery.

  112. We are to stick out our tongue

  113. and to get it checked out.

  114. Let the word of God

  115. diagnose anything that is sinful

  116. and let the word of God

  117. heal

  118. and make it useful.

  119. Let the word of God

  120. diagnose anything that is sinful

  121. and let the word of God

  122. heal it

  123. and make it useful.

  124. So as we continue,

  125. I give us all permission

  126. to stick out your tongues

  127. and enter into the surgery

  128. of God's word.

  129. What does God's word

  130. diagnose

  131. about our tongue?

  132. Well, second,

  133. know your tongue.

  134. Four things

  135. we need to know

  136. about our tongue.

  137. Four things that the word of God

  138. diagnoses

  139. about our tongue.

  140. First,

  141. the tongue is a controlling power.

  142. Look at verse three.

  143. When we put bits

  144. into the mouths of horses

  145. to make them obey us,

  146. we can turn the whole animal.

  147. I don't know if you've ever been on a horse,

  148. but a horse is very strong

  149. and very powerful.

  150. With a tiny bit,

  151. it's a small little steel bar

  152. about so long

  153. which inserts into the horse's mouth

  154. attached to the reins

  155. and with it,

  156. you control the whole animal.

  157. A tiny tug in the reins

  158. and the horse will stop.

  159. A pull to the right

  160. or a pull to the left

  161. and it will go the direction

  162. you want it to go.

  163. It's the same with a large ship

  164. or a cruise liner.

  165. Look at verse four.

  166. Or take ships as an example.

  167. Although they are so large

  168. and are driven by strong winds,

  169. they are steered by a very small rudder

  170. wherever the pilot wants to go.

  171. The largest cruise ship

  172. that sails the seas today

  173. is called Symphony of the Seas.

  174. It's 360 meters long

  175. and 60 meters wide.

  176. It has 18 decks

  177. and it weighs in at 227,000 tons.

  178. But the small rudder,

  179. only a few meters long,

  180. can turn this ship

  181. in any direction.

  182. verse five.

  183. Likewise,

  184. the tongue is a small part

  185. of the body.

  186. The tongue is just like a bit

  187. or a rudder,

  188. but it makes great boasts.

  189. It has the power

  190. to control the whole body.

  191. In other words,

  192. the tongue powerfully determines

  193. and directs the course

  194. of our whole life.

  195. The tongue controls

  196. our destiny.

  197. How we use our words,

  198. what we say

  199. in our conversations,

  200. how we talk

  201. to one another

  202. powerfully controls

  203. what our life

  204. is going to be like.

  205. So it's a controlling power.

  206. Second,

  207. the tongue is a destructive fire.

  208. Look at the second part

  209. of verse five.

  210. Consider what a great forest

  211. is set on fire

  212. by a small spark.

  213. In France last year,

  214. there was a forest fire

  215. covering eight square kilometers

  216. and it destroyed

  217. everything in its path.

  218. Homes, buildings,

  219. the whole forest,

  220. the whole habitation

  221. was all wiped out.

  222. Eight square kilometers

  223. left in a pile

  224. of ash.

  225. You know what the cause was?

  226. A dropped cigarette.

  227. Look at verse six.

  228. The tongue also

  229. is a fire,

  230. a world of evil

  231. among the parts

  232. of the body.

  233. just one word

  234. from our tongue

  235. and it causes

  236. devastation

  237. and destruction.

  238. One word,

  239. one phrase

  240. can break a marriage,

  241. destroy a family,

  242. wreck churches.

  243. Look at the rest

  244. of verse six.

  245. It corrupts

  246. the whole body,

  247. sets the whole course

  248. of one's life

  249. on fire.

  250. A tiny spark

  251. that lasts

  252. barely a second

  253. and barely visible

  254. to the human eye

  255. can set a whole

  256. forest on fire.

  257. And the problem is,

  258. James is saying to us,

  259. when we open our mouths,

  260. sparks fly everywhere.

  261. A careless word,

  262. a bit of gossip,

  263. a lie,

  264. a put down,

  265. a snide remark.

  266. And before we know it,

  267. our whole life

  268. is a blazing fire,

  269. devastated by broken

  270. relationships

  271. all around us.

  272. How do we cause

  273. such damage?

  274. Well, look at the end

  275. of verse six.

  276. The whole course

  277. of one's life

  278. is set on fire

  279. and is itself

  280. set on fire

  281. by hell.

  282. The source

  283. of all this

  284. fiery destruction

  285. is the influence

  286. of hell itself.

  287. When we use

  288. our tongues,

  289. sparks fly

  290. and we're only

  291. speaking what

  292. the devil himself

  293. speaks.

  294. As one writer

  295. has put it,

  296. our tongues

  297. are satanic.

  298. So our tongues

  299. are a controlling

  300. power,

  301. a destructive

  302. fire,

  303. and third,

  304. they are an

  305. untamable evil.

  306. Look at verse seven.

  307. All kinds

  308. of animals,

  309. birds,

  310. reptiles,

  311. and sea creatures

  312. are being tamed

  313. and have been

  314. tamed by mankind.

  315. We've seen

  316. the pictures

  317. on television.

  318. Maybe you've been

  319. to a circus.

  320. We can make

  321. bears dance.

  322. We can make

  323. birds carry

  324. messages

  325. and come back

  326. again.

  327. We can make

  328. crocodiles not

  329. to bite

  330. and insert

  331. your head

  332. in its chops

  333. if you wanted

  334. to.

  335. We can make

  336. killer whales

  337. jump in the air

  338. to catch fish.

  339. But,

  340. look at verse eight.

  341. No human

  342. being

  343. can tame

  344. the tongue.

  345. We can't

  346. stop ourselves

  347. from talking.

  348. We can't

  349. tame this

  350. tiny organ

  351. inside of our

  352. mouth.

  353. I hate you.

  354. I'm not

  355. listening to you.

  356. You're such

  357. a pain.

  358. You always.

  359. Rather than

  360. me taming

  361. my tongue,

  362. my tongue

  363. controls me.

  364. Look at the

  365. end of verse

  366. eight.

  367. It is a

  368. restless evil

  369. full of

  370. deadly poison.

  371. How many

  372. times have

  373. we said to

  374. ourselves,

  375. I wish

  376. I didn't

  377. say that.

  378. How many

  379. times have

  380. we said,

  381. I wish

  382. I kept

  383. my mouth

  384. shut?

  385. Look back

  386. upon the

  387. relationships

  388. that are

  389. now broken.

  390. What's

  391. the cause?

  392. Well,

  393. it just

  394. pops out of

  395. our mouth,

  396. doesn't it?

  397. Before we

  398. even have

  399. time to

  400. think what

  401. we are

  402. saying,

  403. our tongues

  404. just take

  405. over and

  406. an outburst

  407. of anger,

  408. a harsh

  409. response,

  410. a slanderous

  411. remark?

  412. My tongue

  413. is like

  414. a viper,

  415. end of

  416. verse eight,

  417. full of

  418. deadly

  419. poison.

  420. I open

  421. my mouth

  422. and out

  423. comes

  424. poisonous

  425. words that

  426. crush,

  427. break,

  428. and destroy.

  429. the words

  430. I'm quite

  431. sure that

  432. my family

  433. remember

  434. are the

  435. words that

  436. are like

  437. deadly

  438. poison,

  439. words that

  440. break and

  441. destroy.

  442. I can't

  443. seem to

  444. stop it.

  445. It's an

  446. untamable,

  447. restless

  448. evil.

  449. fourth,

  450. the tongue

  451. reveals

  452. my heart,

  453. verse ten.

  454. Out of

  455. the same

  456. mouth

  457. come praise

  458. and cursing.

  459. My

  460. brothers and

  461. sisters,

  462. this should

  463. not be.

  464. One

  465. moment we

  466. can be

  467. singing

  468. songs of

  469. worship to

  470. God,

  471. the next

  472. we're

  473. criticizing

  474. the people

  475. who stood

  476. behind us

  477. to somebody

  478. else.

  479. verse

  480. 11,

  481. can both

  482. fresh water

  483. and salt

  484. water flow

  485. from the

  486. same spring?

  487. My

  488. brothers and

  489. sisters,

  490. can a

  491. fig tree

  492. bear olives

  493. or a

  494. grapevine

  495. bear figs?

  496. Neither

  497. can a

  498. salt spring

  499. produce

  500. fresh

  501. water.

  502. James

  503. uses his

  504. words so

  505. carefully,

  506. but they

  507. are so

  508. clear.

  509. his words

  510. are so

  511. revealing.

  512. A tree

  513. will always

  514. produce its

  515. fruit,

  516. pear trees

  517. don't grow

  518. apples,

  519. and you

  520. won't find

  521. an orange

  522. from a

  523. banana tree.

  524. You see,

  525. it's what

  526. comes out

  527. of our

  528. mouth

  529. that reveals

  530. the state

  531. of our

  532. hearts.

  533. What comes

  534. out of our

  535. mouth only

  536. reveals the

  537. source from

  538. which it

  539. comes.

  540. Remember

  541. what Jesus

  542. said.

  543. This comes

  544. from Matthew

  545. 15.

  546. He says,

  547. what goes

  548. into someone's

  549. mouth does

  550. not defile

  551. them, but

  552. what comes

  553. out of their

  554. mouth, that

  555. is what

  556. defiles them.

  557. The things

  558. that come out

  559. of a person's

  560. mouth come

  561. from the

  562. heart, and

  563. these defile

  564. them.

  565. For out of

  566. the heart

  567. come evil

  568. thoughts, false

  569. testimony, slander,

  570. and we can

  571. add to that

  572. crosswords,

  573. malicious gossip,

  574. destructive

  575. lies.

  576. Our tongues

  577. as we speak

  578. only reveal

  579. who we are

  580. and what our

  581. hearts are

  582. like.

  583. so what

  584. are we to

  585. do with

  586. this diagnosis

  587. as we step

  588. into the

  589. surgery, as

  590. God's word

  591. makes the

  592. diagnosis, what

  593. are we to

  594. do with our

  595. powerful,

  596. destructive,

  597. untamable,

  598. evil,

  599. poisonous

  600. tongues?

  601. I guess

  602. we've never

  603. thought of our

  604. tongues like

  605. that, have

  606. we?

  607. Well, as we

  608. said at the

  609. beginning, let

  610. the word of

  611. God diagnose

  612. anything that

  613. is sinful,

  614. and let the

  615. word of God

  616. heal it, and

  617. make it useful.

  618. God's word

  619. will diagnose

  620. what is sinful,

  621. but the same

  622. word of God

  623. can heal it,

  624. and make it

  625. useful.

  626. So we

  627. check our

  628. tongue, we

  629. know our

  630. tongue, and

  631. third, we

  632. transform our

  633. tongues.

  634. Let me show

  635. you how our

  636. tongues can be

  637. transformed.

  638. It requires

  639. wisdom.

  640. Wisdom that

  641. comes from

  642. heaven, not

  643. wisdom from

  644. the world.

  645. Look at

  646. verse 13.

  647. Who is

  648. wise and

  649. understanding

  650. among you?

  651. wisdom.

  652. Well, if

  653. you're wise, let

  654. them show it

  655. by their good

  656. life, by

  657. deeds done in

  658. the humility

  659. that comes from

  660. wisdom.

  661. Wisdom is not

  662. academic ability.

  663. Being wise is

  664. not about clever

  665. arguments and

  666. using our words to

  667. win people over or

  668. to prove your

  669. point.

  670. Godly wisdom, true

  671. wisdom, is about

  672. living life God's

  673. way, living the

  674. way God has

  675. created us to

  676. be.

  677. It is, as it

  678. says in verse

  679. 13, it's

  680. showing it by our

  681. good life, by

  682. deeds done in

  683. humility that

  684. comes from

  685. wisdom.

  686. wisdom.

  687. So, having

  688. this wisdom,

  689. having the

  690. right kind of

  691. wisdom in our

  692. life, will

  693. keep our tongue

  694. in check.

  695. It will enable

  696. us to use our

  697. tongue to build

  698. up rather than

  699. destroy.

  700. It will enable

  701. us to tame and

  702. control our

  703. tongue so that

  704. we bring healing

  705. and peace.

  706. So, how do we

  707. get this wisdom

  708. to transform and

  709. change our

  710. tongue?

  711. Well, there's

  712. two steps.

  713. First, we

  714. need to repent

  715. of worldly

  716. wisdom.

  717. Look at

  718. verse 14.

  719. But if you

  720. harbor bitter

  721. envy, so if

  722. you store up,

  723. internalize those

  724. words of bitter

  725. envy and selfish

  726. ambition in your

  727. hearts, do not

  728. boast about it

  729. or deny the

  730. truth.

  731. You see, the

  732. reason James has

  733. been working

  734. through what the

  735. tongue is like,

  736. helping us to

  737. understand what

  738. the tongue is,

  739. is so that we

  740. can see how

  741. great a problem

  742. our tongues

  743. actually are.

  744. And when God's

  745. word reveals to

  746. us what our

  747. tongues are like,

  748. he's revealing to

  749. us what our

  750. hearts are like

  751. and what comes

  752. out of our

  753. hearts.

  754. And as the

  755. diagnosis is

  756. made, he's

  757. saying to us,

  758. don't ignore

  759. it.

  760. Verse 14,

  761. end of verse

  762. 14, do not

  763. boast about it

  764. or deny the

  765. truth.

  766. You see, if we

  767. try and hide the

  768. problem, if we

  769. fight against it

  770. and deny the

  771. truth, it's

  772. going to break

  773. us and destroy

  774. us.

  775. Verse 15,

  776. such wisdom

  777. does not come

  778. down from heaven

  779. but is earthly,

  780. unspiritual,

  781. demonic.

  782. For where you

  783. have envy and

  784. selfish ambition,

  785. there you find

  786. disorder and

  787. every evil

  788. practice.

  789. us.

  790. You see, as I

  791. sit under God's

  792. word and as

  793. the diagnosis

  794. has been made,

  795. if my response

  796. is, well, I

  797. don't have a

  798. problem with my

  799. tongue, I

  800. don't have a

  801. problem with how

  802. I speak, well,

  803. such a view,

  804. we're told in

  805. verse 15, is

  806. earthly or

  807. worldly wisdom.

  808. It's

  809. unspiritual,

  810. it's demonic.

  811. And all it

  812. will result in

  813. is more

  814. damaged, broken

  815. relationships, end

  816. of verse 16, for

  817. there you will

  818. find disorder and

  819. every evil

  820. practice.

  821. If we walk

  822. into a surgery

  823. and a diagnosis

  824. is made and we

  825. just walk out and

  826. do nothing about

  827. it, we will

  828. just get more

  829. sick.

  830. And I think

  831. that's the point

  832. James is making

  833. here.

  834. the diagnosis

  835. has been made.

  836. Worldly wisdom

  837. says, ignore the

  838. diagnosis.

  839. Just keep on

  840. going and live

  841. the way you

  842. want to live

  843. and, well, if

  844. we do, we

  845. will just find

  846. further disorder

  847. and every evil

  848. practice.

  849. We need to

  850. repent of

  851. worldly wisdom.

  852. wisdom.

  853. And second,

  854. we need to

  855. receive heavenly

  856. wisdom.

  857. Verse 17.

  858. But the

  859. wisdom that

  860. comes from

  861. heaven is

  862. first of all

  863. pure, then

  864. peace-loving,

  865. considerate,

  866. submissive,

  867. full of

  868. mercy and

  869. good fruit,

  870. impartial and

  871. sincere.

  872. fear.

  873. Now, when I

  874. look at verse

  875. 17, I think,

  876. well, where

  877. do you see that

  878. kind of wisdom

  879. displayed?

  880. Well, the only

  881. place that wisdom

  882. is displayed is

  883. in the person of

  884. Christ.

  885. Because the

  886. wisdom that

  887. comes from

  888. heaven is

  889. Christ.

  890. Christ is

  891. pure.

  892. Christ is

  893. peace-loving.

  894. He is

  895. considerate.

  896. He is

  897. submissive.

  898. Christ is

  899. full of

  900. mercy and

  901. good fruit.

  902. Christ is

  903. impartial and

  904. sincere.

  905. So,

  906. Christ is

  907. the wisdom

  908. that we

  909. need.

  910. Look at

  911. how Paul

  912. refers to

  913. Christ.

  914. in 1

  915. Corinthians.

  916. He says,

  917. Christ,

  918. the power

  919. of God

  920. and the

  921. wisdom

  922. of God.

  923. Again,

  924. Christ

  925. Jesus,

  926. who has

  927. become for

  928. us wisdom

  929. from God.

  930. That is

  931. our righteousness,

  932. holiness,

  933. and redemption.

  934. Christ is

  935. the wisdom

  936. we need.

  937. And Christ

  938. is the one

  939. who has

  940. come to

  941. us.

  942. And in

  943. his wisdom,

  944. he came

  945. to us

  946. from heaven

  947. to me

  948. and to

  949. you.

  950. And through

  951. his wisdom,

  952. through his

  953. work here

  954. on earth,

  955. through his

  956. death on

  957. the cross,

  958. my destructive,

  959. evil,

  960. poisonous tongue

  961. has been

  962. dealt with.

  963. Christ

  964. has paid

  965. the punishment,

  966. the price

  967. for all

  968. my wrong,

  969. hurtful,

  970. cursing

  971. words.

  972. and through

  973. his wisdom,

  974. he has

  975. now forgiven

  976. me and

  977. gives me

  978. the power

  979. of his

  980. Holy Spirit

  981. to control

  982. and tame

  983. my tongue.

  984. A greater

  985. power

  986. that I do

  987. not possess

  988. within myself.

  989. And when

  990. our tongue

  991. is so

  992. transformed,

  993. it produces

  994. words that

  995. are,

  996. verse 17,

  997. pure,

  998. peace-loving,

  999. considerate,

  1000. words that

  1001. are submissive,

  1002. words that

  1003. are full of

  1004. mercy and

  1005. good fruit,

  1006. words that

  1007. are impartial

  1008. and sincere.

  1009. when we

  1010. repent of

  1011. worldly wisdom

  1012. and humbly

  1013. receive

  1014. heavenly wisdom,

  1015. our tongues

  1016. are transformed

  1017. and look

  1018. what happens

  1019. when we

  1020. speak with

  1021. a transformed

  1022. tongue,

  1023. verse 18,

  1024. peacemakers

  1025. who sow

  1026. in peace

  1027. reap a

  1028. harvest of

  1029. righteousness.

  1030. Rather than

  1031. sowing words

  1032. that produce

  1033. hurt and

  1034. division

  1035. and angry

  1036. responses

  1037. and put

  1038. downs,

  1039. we now

  1040. can sow

  1041. words that

  1042. reap a

  1043. harvest of

  1044. righteousness,

  1045. transform

  1046. tongues that

  1047. bring words

  1048. of healing,

  1049. words that

  1050. begin to

  1051. redeem and

  1052. forgive where

  1053. marriages are

  1054. breaking down,

  1055. words that

  1056. can restore

  1057. families,

  1058. words that

  1059. can renew

  1060. churches,

  1061. words that

  1062. enable us to

  1063. unite broken

  1064. relationships,

  1065. peacemakers

  1066. who sow

  1067. in peace

  1068. reap a

  1069. harvest of

  1070. righteousness,

  1071. transform tongues

  1072. that enable us

  1073. to respond to

  1074. the people we

  1075. will meet

  1076. this week,

  1077. not with

  1078. anger or

  1079. bitterness,

  1080. but with

  1081. words of

  1082. compassion,

  1083. words of

  1084. grace and

  1085. mercy,

  1086. offering

  1087. people the

  1088. hope of

  1089. Christ,

  1090. the true

  1091. wisdom who

  1092. has come

  1093. down from

  1094. heaven,

  1095. the one

  1096. who said,

  1097. I will

  1098. give of

  1099. my life,

  1100. I will

  1101. die for

  1102. you so

  1103. that you

  1104. can have

  1105. life.

  1106. James's

  1107. words are

  1108. so clear.

  1109. Check out

  1110. our tongues,

  1111. listen to

  1112. the diagnosis

  1113. from God's

  1114. word,

  1115. and let

  1116. that same

  1117. word heal

  1118. our tongues

  1119. and bring

  1120. about a

  1121. healing so

  1122. that our

  1123. tongues become

  1124. useful,

  1125. peace-loving,

  1126. peacemaking

  1127. tongues in

  1128. this broken

  1129. and disordered

  1130. world.

  1131. Let's pray

  1132. together.

  1133. Amen.

  1134. Amen.

  1135. Amen.

  1136. Amen.

  1137. Amen.

  1138. Amen.

  1139. Amen.

  1140. Amen.

  1141. Amen.

  1142. Amen.

  1143. Amen.

  1144. Amen.

  1145. Amen.

  1146. Amen.

  1147. Amen.

  1148. Amen.

  1149. Amen.

  1150. Amen.

  1151. Amen.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. As we pray,

  1154. reflect on

  1155. these words

  1156. and after

  1157. I've read

  1158. them,

  1159. we'll just

  1160. leave a

  1161. quiet moment

  1162. for you

  1163. to bring

  1164. our own

  1165. confession

  1166. and our

  1167. own

  1168. response

  1169. to God

  1170. in the

  1171. quietness.

1172. these words come from Psalm 139

1173. you have searched me Lord

  1174. and you know me

1175. you know when I sit and when I rise

1176. you perceive my thoughts from afar

1177. before a word is on my tongue

1178. you Lord know it completely

1179. search me God and know my heart

1180. test me and know my anxious thoughts

1181. see if there is any offensive way in me

1182. and lead me in the way everlasting

  1183. exist

  1184. I

  1185. I

  1186. I

  1187. I

1188. Father, we all stumble in many ways.

1189. All of us use our tongues in the wrong way.

1190. We ask that you would forgive us

1191. for the times where we have used our tongues unwisely.

1192. Help us, Father, that we would repent of worldly wisdom

1193. and stop trying to fix things on our own,

1194. but rather that we would receive humbly the wisdom from heaven,

  1195. Christ himself,

1196. asking that you would fill us afresh with the power of your Holy Spirit

1197. as we depend upon you.

1198. Heal us so that our tongues may become useful,

1199. that we may use words to build up,

1200. that we would be peacemakers,

1201. and that our words would point people to Christ,

  1202. the true healer,

1203. the one who gives life to all who turn to him.

  1204. Father, thank you.

1205. Thank you for one another.

1206. Thank you for words of encouragement.

1207. Thank you for words that build up.

1208. Thank you for your gifts to us.

1209. And we pray that we would go into this week

  1210. speaking words of peace,

  1211. bringing words of compassion.

1212. Help us, Father, we pray.

  1213. In Jesus' name.

  1214. Amen.

  1215. Amen.

1216. We're going to sing in response to that last verse in James about sowing peace.

1217. Make me a channel of your peace.

1218. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love.

1219. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord.

1220. And where there's doubt, true faith in you.

1221. Let's sing this as a prayer for ourselves personally,

1222. and our prayer for each other,

1223. that we would be a channel of peace.

1224. Let's stand together as we sing.

  1225. Amen.
