  1. James chapter 4 verses 1 to 12.

    James 4:1–12

  2. What causes fights and quarrels among you?

  3. Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?

  4. You desire but do not have, so you kill.

  5. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight.

  6. You do not have because you do not ask God.

  7. When you ask, you do not receive because you ask with wrong motives,

  8. that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

  9. You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God?

  10. Therefore anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

  11. Or do you think scripture says, without reason,

  12. that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us.

  13. But he gives us more grace.

  14. That is why scripture says,

  15. God opposes the pride but shows favour to the humble.

  16. Submit yourselves then to God.

  17. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

  18. Come near to God and he will come near to you.

  19. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

  20. Grieve, mourn and wail.

  21. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to bloom.

  22. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.

  23. Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.

  24. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it.

  25. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.

  26. There is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy.

  27. But you, who are you to judge your neighbour?

  28. Let's pray.

  29. Let's pray.

  30. Father, we ask, do your work in our lives.

  31. We pray this for your honour.

  32. Amen.

  33. Well, I wonder, have you ever been to a perfect church?

  34. I'm not talking about Carygilline Baptist.

  35. Have you ever been to a perfect church?

  36. Well, if ever you find one, please don't go, because you'll ruin it.

  37. Recently, I was talking to a pastor who told me very proudly that the name of his church was Perfect Church.

  38. I asked him, does anybody go to your church?

  39. But I think the irony was lost on him.

  40. The fact is, as soon as we put people together, conflict is not far behind.

  41. And while that's sad, and it always is sad, we should never be surprised that there can be fights in the church.

  42. You see, there is no such thing as a perfect church.

  43. Because, well, let's admit it, none of us are perfect people.

  44. But it doesn't have to be like that.

  45. Fights might be normal for day-to-day life.

  46. Disagreements might happen in your work with your colleagues, with your boss.

  47. Arguments may be part of your family experience.

  48. But they should never be part of the church.

  49. Look at verse 11.

  50. Brothers and sisters.

  51. So here he's addressing the church family.

  52. Christians.

  53. Followers of Jesus.

  54. Brothers and sisters.

  55. Do not slander one another.

  56. So through this text, James is showing us how we can prevent fights from breaking out.

  57. And instead build loving relationships.

  58. How we can prevent fights from breaking out.

  59. And how we can build loving relationships.

  60. First, fights and quarrels.

  61. James wants us to face up to the fact that, well, disagreements,

  62. and fallouts do happen.

  63. This fight happens in different ways.

  64. First, we fight with each other.

  65. Look at verse 1.

  66. What causes fights and quarrels among you?

  67. Now, I don't think James is saying that punches are being thrown during the sermon.

  68. Or that we should expect a wrestling match to be happening down the back there.

  69. Remember what James has been talking about.

  70. Go back to chapter 3, verse 6.

  71. James chapter 3, verse 6.

    James 3:6

  72. He tells us there that the tongue also is a fire.

  73. That's the tongue in our mouth.

  74. Is a fire.

  75. A world of evil among the parts of the body.

  76. It corrupts the whole body.

  77. Look at verse 8 of chapter 3.

  78. No human being can tame the tongue.

  79. It is a restless evil full of deadly poison.

  80. So the fight studies talking about are not physical.

  81. They are verbal.

  82. We can't seem to control our tongues.

  83. As soon as we open our mouth,

  84. out comes this destructive fire,

  85. a deadly poison that can break and destroy relationships.

  86. Instead of using our words to build and make peace,

  87. out of our words,

  88. we start a fight.

  89. So we fight with each other.

  90. But James wants us to go a little bit deeper.

  91. Second, we fight with ourself.

  92. Look what it says in verse 1.

  93. What causes fights and quarrels among you?

  94. That's the issue.

  95. He's saying, look, there are fights and quarrels.

  96. But here's the issue.

  97. What causes these fights and quarrels?

  98. Well, the cause of every disagreement

  99. is always the other person, right?

  100. If they hadn't said,

  101. well, then I wouldn't have said.

  102. If they had just kept their mouth shut,

  103. everything would be fine.

  104. It's not my fault.

  105. It's their fault.

  106. They always want to have the last word.

  107. The cause for every argument and quarrel

  108. is the other person, right?

  109. Wrong.

  110. Look what it says in verse 1.

  111. What causes fights and quarrels among you?

  112. Answer.

  113. Don't they come from your desires

  114. that battle within you?

  115. The cause of every fight and quarrel

  116. is in here, in our hearts.

  117. You see, the real fight

  118. is with our sinful, selfish desires.

  119. Verse 2.

  120. You desire, but you do not have.

  121. So you kill.

  122. Of course, arguments don't always turn violent

  123. or end in someone being killed.

  124. It can happen.

  125. Even on the news this week,

  126. in Mitchellstown,

  127. there was a man who was killed

  128. sitting with his mate in the pub.

  129. They start having an argument.

  130. Just words.

  131. But it turns violent.

  132. It can happen.

  133. Look at the rest of verse 2.

  134. You covet,

  135. but you cannot get what you want,

  136. so you quarrel and fight.

  137. The point is,

  138. we're not to blame others

  139. and start pointing fingers at others.

  140. We're to look at ourselves.

  141. I fight and I quarrel

  142. because I want to be right.

  143. James has already talked about this.

  144. If you go back to chapter 1, verse 14.

  145. James chapter 1, verse 14.

    James 1:14

  146. Each person is tempted

  147. when they are dragged away

  148. by their own evil desire

  149. and enticed.

  150. It's our own evil desires

  151. that drag us away

  152. and cause us to fight and quarrel.

  153. A very helpful,

  154. but yet a tragic example of this

  155. is the account of Cain and Abel.

  156. Let's have a look at that.

  157. If you keep your finger

  158. in James chapter 4,

    James 4 chapter mention

  159. go back to Genesis,

  160. which is the very first book of the Bible.

  161. Genesis chapter 4.

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  162. The context here,

  163. Cain and Abel

  164. were the first two sons

  165. of Adam and Eve.

  166. And Cain and Abel

  167. have both made offerings to God.

  168. Abel's offering was accepted,

  169. Cain's wasn't.

  170. And Cain has now become jealous,

  171. angry with his brother Abel.

  172. And we pick it up in chapter 4, verse 6.

  173. Then the Lord said to Cain,

  174. Why are you angry?

  175. Why is your face downcast?

  176. If you do what is right,

  177. will you not be accepted?

  178. But if you do not do what is right,

  179. sin is crouching at your door.

  180. It desires to have you,

  181. but you must rule over it.

  182. Do you see what God was saying to Cain?

  183. Sin desires to have you.

  184. It's controlling you.

  185. It's at your door.

  186. It's knocking.

  187. It's wanting to rule over you

  188. because you want to be right.

  189. And sadly,

  190. Cain didn't deal with that sin, did he?

  191. And it did end in murder,

  192. the loss of his brother's life.

  193. Let's go back to James chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  194. You see, this same fight

  195. is happening within each one of us

  196. all of the time.

  197. Our desire for self

  198. rules our hearts.

  199. We always want to be right,

  200. never wrong.

  201. The battle rages inside of us.

  202. Our desires take over.

  203. We want to get even.

  204. We want the other person

  205. to know how we feel

  206. and so we tell them.

  207. We want them to know

  208. how wrong they've been.

  209. We want to set the record straight

  210. and it all comes out

  211. in fighting and quarrelling.

  212. Don't look at other people

  213. for the reason.

  214. James is saying,

  215. look at the desires within you.

  216. But the fight goes even deeper

  217. than with each other

  218. and with ourself.

  219. It's actually a fight with God.

  220. Look at verse 3.

  221. When you ask,

  222. when you pray to God,

  223. when you talk to him,

  224. you do not receive

  225. because you ask

  226. with the wrong motives

  227. that you may spend

  228. what you get

  229. on your pleasures.

  230. Now this kind of prayer

  231. that he's talking about here

  232. reflects a hostile relationship

  233. with God.

  234. It's a selfish relationship.

  235. He says you're asking

  236. with the wrong motives.

  237. You're not interested

  238. in what pleases God

  239. or what God wants,

  240. but what you want

  241. and what will satisfy you.

  242. Look at the end of verse 3.

  243. That you may spend

  244. what you get

  245. on your pleasures.

  246. And that same word,

  247. pleasures,

  248. is the same word

  249. for desires

  250. in verse 1.

  251. You desire something.

  252. You want something

  253. for yourself.

  254. And so you're asking

  255. just to please

  256. your own desires.

  257. It's all about me,

  258. what I want.

  259. Now such a prayer

  260. is a sign of a relationship

  261. that's in conflict

  262. with God.

  263. Somebody who's actually

  264. fighting with God.

  265. Look how James describes it

  266. in very strong language.

  267. Verse 4.

  268. You adulterous people.

  269. Imagine a husband

  270. who's been married

  271. to his wife

  272. for a number of years

  273. and one day

  274. he discovers that

  275. through the marriage

  276. she's been committing adultery.

  277. Her visits to family,

  278. weekends away with friends,

  279. were actually secret affairs

  280. with other people.

  281. Well look at verse 4.

  282. This is how James

  283. is describing

  284. our relationship with God.

  285. He says,

  286. you're adulterous people.

  287. Don't you know

  288. that friendship

  289. with the world

  290. means enmity?

  291. That means hostility

  292. against God.

  293. He's saying

  294. when our sinful desires

  295. control us,

  296. it's like walking out

  297. on our marriage relationship

  298. with God.

  299. it's a spiritual adultery.

  300. Instead of being loyal

  301. and faithful to God

  302. who loves us

  303. and who's given

  304. his all for us,

  305. we walk away

  306. and we build

  307. friendships with the world.

  308. We have an affair

  309. with the world.

  310. Now just as a husband

  311. would be rightfully

  312. angry with his wife

  313. if she had an affair

  314. or vice versa,

  315. if the husband

  316. had an affair,

  317. the wife would be

  318. right to be angry.

  319. So God is rightfully

  320. angry with us

  321. when we choose

  322. friendship with him

  323. over friendship

  324. with the world.

  325. Walking out on God

  326. puts us in conflict

  327. with God.

  328. Look at the end

  329. of verse 4.

  330. Therefore,

  331. anyone who chooses

  332. to be a friend

  333. of the world

  334. becomes an enemy

  335. of God.

  336. So when I begin

  337. to follow my own desires,

  338. I become God's enemy.

  339. When I pursue

  340. what I want

  341. rather than

  342. what God wants,

  343. I'm starting

  344. a fight with God.

  345. It's hostility.

  346. It's enmity.

  347. So let's understand

  348. the seriousness

  349. of arguments

  350. and disagreements.

  351. The causes

  352. of fights

  353. and quarrels

  354. is not out there.

  355. It's actually

  356. in here,

  357. in my heart,

  358. in your heart.

  359. And it reflects

  360. a much more

  361. serious fight

  362. that we're having,

  363. a fight with God

  364. about who

  365. has control

  366. of our life.

  367. is it your desires

  368. or is it

  369. God's desires?

  370. So what's going

  371. to stop

  372. or prevent

  373. this kind

  374. of fighting?

  375. How are we going

  376. to build

  377. loving relationships

  378. instead of

  379. fighting and quarreling?

  380. Well,

  381. second,

  382. we need grace

  383. and humility.

  384. Let's see

  385. how God

  386. responds

  387. to us.

  388. First,

  389. jealous grace.

  390. Look at verse 5.

  391. Read it carefully.

  392. It's a little bit

  393. difficult,

  394. but we'll

  395. work our way

  396. through it.

  397. Verse 5.

  398. Or do you think

  399. Scripture says

  400. without reason

  401. that he,

  402. that's God,

  403. jealously

  404. longs

  405. for the

  406. spirit

  407. he has

  408. caused

  409. to dwell

  410. in us.

  411. But he

  412. gives us

  413. more grace.

  414. Let me try

  415. and unpack

  416. that for you

  417. a little bit.

  418. A husband

  419. who loves

  420. his wife,

  421. even though

  422. she has had

  423. an affair,

  424. will not

  425. give up on her.

  426. He will

  427. pursue her.

  428. He will

  429. long for her

  430. return.

  431. And that

  432. kind of love

  433. is a jealous

  434. love.

  435. He will

  436. not be

  437. satisfied

  438. until she

  439. is at home

  440. with him.

  441. Now that's

  442. a beautiful

  443. description

  444. and picture

  445. of God's

  446. love towards

  447. people like

  448. us.

  449. Remember in

  450. verse 4 he

  451. says you are

  452. an adulterous

  453. people.

  454. We've

  455. left God.

  456. We've

  457. moved away

  458. from him.

  459. And look

  460. how God

  461. responds in

  462. verse 5,

  463. the end of

  464. verse 5.

  465. He

  466. jealously

  467. longs for

  468. the spirit

  469. he has

  470. caused

  471. to dwell

  472. in us.

  473. Now,

  474. if you

  475. can bear

  476. with me,

  477. you may

  478. see that

  479. little

  480. sentence.

  481. There's a

  482. letter at

  483. the end

  484. of it and

  485. it has a

  486. little note

  487. at the

  488. bottom of

  489. your page

  490. and it

  491. can be

  492. translated

  493. or read

  494. like this.

  495. Or that

  496. the spirit

  497. he calls

  498. to dwell

  499. in us

  500. envies

  501. intensely.

  502. Or the

  503. spirit he

  504. calls to

  505. dwell in us

  506. longs

  507. jealously.

  508. So God

  509. by his

  510. spirit that

  511. is within

  512. us,

  513. his spirit

  514. longs.

  515. It's an

  516. intense

  517. love,

  518. a jealous

  519. love that

  520. we would

  521. not drift

  522. from him

  523. but that

  524. we would

  525. come back

  526. to him.

  527. And whenever

  528. we sense

  529. or are

  530. aware of

  531. the spirit

  532. convicting

  533. us or

  534. challenging

  535. us,

  536. this is a

  537. sign of

  538. God's

  539. jealous

  540. love at

  541. work in

  542. our

  543. hearts,

  544. longing for

  545. his people

  546. to return,

  547. pursuing

  548. us,

  549. calling us,

  550. stop

  551. fighting with

  552. me,

  553. stop resisting

  554. me,

  555. open your

  556. hearts to

  557. my love.

  558. And when

  559. we open

  560. our hearts

  561. to his

  562. love,

  563. we find

  564. mercy,

  565. we find

  566. forgiveness.

  567. Look what

  568. it says

  569. at the

  570. beginning

  571. of verse

  572. 6,

  573. but he

  574. gives

  575. us

  576. more

  577. grace.

  578. You see,

  579. a wife

  580. whose

  581. husband

  582. has had

  583. an affair

  584. has every

  585. right to

  586. reject him,

  587. to refuse

  588. him.

  589. And God

  590. has every

  591. right to

  592. refuse us.

  593. But here's

  594. the beautiful

  595. picture.

  596. He doesn't.

  597. instead of

  598. rejection,

  599. there is a

  600. rich welcome.

  601. Instead of

  602. anger,

  603. there is this

  604. beautiful,

  605. warm embrace.

  606. Look at

  607. verse 6,

  608. but he

  609. gives us

  610. more grace.

  611. There's an

  612. overflow of

  613. grace that

  614. floods and

  615. overwhelms the

  616. sinful,

  617. selfish desires

  618. of our

  619. hearts.

  620. grace.

  621. That is the

  622. abundance and

  623. the amazing

  624. response of

  625. God towards

  626. people like

  627. you and

  628. me.

  629. This is the

  630. grace of

  631. God.

  632. That intense

  633. jealousy,

  634. jealousness,

  635. longing for us

  636. to come back

  637. to him,

  638. longing that we

  639. would stop

  640. fighting with

  641. him,

  642. stop rejecting

  643. his advances,

  644. but welcoming

  645. him and

  646. trusting him

  647. afresh.

  648. How beautiful

  649. it would be to

  650. experience and

  651. to know that

  652. grace in our

  653. lives.

  654. And the good

  655. news is we

  656. can.

  657. To experience

  658. God's jealous

  659. grace,

  660. we must come

  661. in humble

  662. repentance.

  663. Look at

  664. verse 6

  665. again.

  666. He gives us

  667. more grace,

  668. grace.

  669. So no matter

  670. the depth

  671. or greatness

  672. of our sin,

  673. no matter

  674. how bad

  675. it may

  676. appear,

  677. or what

  678. people might

  679. say,

  680. God gives

  681. us more

  682. grace to

  683. cover it

  684. all.

  685. That is

  686. why scripture

  687. says,

  688. God opposes

  689. the proud,

  690. but shows

  691. favour to

  692. the humble.

  693. humble.

  694. He opposes

  695. the proud,

  696. but shows

  697. favour.

  698. That word

  699. favour is

  700. the same

  701. word for

  702. grace.

  703. He shows

  704. grace to

  705. the humble.

  706. You see,

  707. there's a

  708. condition.

  709. If we are

  710. to receive

  711. and experience

  712. God's amazing

  713. grace,

  714. there must

  715. be humble

  716. repentance.

  717. Look at

  718. verse 10.

  719. He says,

  720. humble yourselves

  721. before the

  722. Lord and

  723. he will lift

  724. you up.

  725. we will

  726. experience

  727. the depths

  728. of God's

  729. mercy and

  730. grace towards

  731. us.

  732. You see,

  733. if we

  734. continually

  735. blame others

  736. and point

  737. fingers at

  738. one another,

  739. if we

  740. persist on

  741. wanting to

  742. be right

  743. and never

  744. at fault,

  745. if we

  746. say,

  747. it's them,

  748. it's not

  749. me,

  750. then we'll

  751. never know

  752. God's

  753. grace.

  754. what will

  755. remain is

  756. a fighting,

  757. critical,

  758. judgmental

  759. spirit and

  760. we will

  761. never be

  762. lifted up

  763. from those

  764. depths.

  765. But if we

  766. humble

  767. ourselves,

  768. how rich

  769. a welcome

  770. we will

  771. receive,

  772. how beautiful

  773. it will be

  774. to know

  775. the depth

  776. of his

  777. grace.

  778. well,

  779. what does

  780. humble

  781. repentance

  782. look like?

  783. Well,

  784. if you've

  785. got your

  786. notes on

  787. your sheet,

  788. there's a

  789. place there

  790. for you to

  791. write down

  792. three things.

  793. Let's look

  794. at verses

  795. seven to

  796. nine,

  797. because that

  798. shows us

  799. what humble

  800. repentance

  801. looks like.

  802. First,

  803. we submit

  804. to God.

  805. We submit

  806. to God.

  807. Verse seven,

  808. submit yourselves

  809. then to

  810. God.

  811. Resist the

  812. devil and

  813. he will

  814. flee from

  815. you.

  816. To submit

  817. is simply

  818. to surrender.

  819. It's actually

  820. to give up

  821. the fight.

  822. It's to

  823. hoist up

  824. our white

  825. flag and

  826. say,

  827. I've put

  828. down my

  829. weapons.

  830. I no

  831. longer want

  832. to fight

  833. or kick

  834. against God.

  835. Our sinful

  836. desires no

  837. longer want

  838. to be in

  839. control.

  840. I want

  841. God to be

  842. in control

  843. of my

  844. life.

  845. It's not

  846. about my

  847. desires,

  848. but what

  849. does God

  850. desire of

  851. me?

  852. What does

  853. his word

  854. say is

  855. right and

  856. best for

  857. me?

  858. And as

  859. we hoist

  860. up our

  861. white flag

  862. and lay

  863. down our

  864. weapons,

  865. as we

  866. submit and

  867. surrender

  868. ourselves

  869. to God,

  870. look what

  871. happens,

  872. verse seven.

  873. Resist the

  874. devil and

  875. he will

  876. flee from

  877. you.

  878. The devil

  879. is real.

  880. He's not

  881. a joke

  882. or somebody

  883. who's a

  884. pretend

  885. character.

  886. He's

  887. active and

  888. he's out

  889. to use

  890. us to

  891. cause these

  892. fights and

  893. quarrels,

  894. to build

  895. our hostility

  896. against God.

  897. But as we

  898. surrender to

  899. him,

  900. so our

  901. desires begin

  902. to change

  903. within our

  904. life.

  905. We begin

  906. to want

  907. what God

  908. wants.

  909. surrender.

  910. And when

  911. such a

  912. person begins

  913. to submit

  914. and surrender,

  915. their desires

  916. change and

  917. the devil has

  918. no interest in

  919. such a person.

  920. He wants

  921. willing partners.

  922. He wants

  923. people who

  924. will kick

  925. against God.

  926. So as we

  927. submit, in a

  928. sense the

  929. devil flees

  930. from us and

  931. our relationship

  932. with God

  933. deepens and

  934. strengthens and

  935. those desires

  936. become central

  937. to our

  938. life.

  939. So what

  940. does humble

  941. repentance look

  942. like?

  943. Well first we

  944. submit to God,

  945. we lay down

  946. our weapons.

  947. Second, there

  948. should be

  949. sincere repentance.

  950. Sincere

  951. repentance,

  952. verse 8.

  953. Come near

  954. to God

  955. and he

  956. will come

  957. near to

  958. you.

  959. Again, what a

  960. beautiful picture

  961. that is.

  962. We do not

  963. need to fear

  964. coming to

  965. God.

  966. Why?

  967. Well because

  968. in Christ,

  969. Christ has

  970. taken the

  971. condemnation

  972. that we

  973. deserve.

  974. That has

  975. been removed

  976. completely at

  977. the cross.

  978. So we

  979. can come

  980. near to

  981. God and

  982. he will

  983. come near

  984. to you.

  985. If we

  986. come to

  987. him sincerely,

  988. he's going

  989. to welcome

  990. us, not

  991. push us

  992. away.

  993. He's longing

  994. for us to

  995. return.

  996. Look at the

  997. rest of

  998. verse 8.

  999. Wash your

  1000. hands, you

  1001. sinners.

  1002. Purify your

  1003. hearts, you

  1004. double-minded.

  1005. Now we've

  1006. got to

  1007. remember,

  1008. repentance is

  1009. not just

  1010. simply coming

  1011. along and

  1012. saying to

  1013. God, sorry,

  1014. and then

  1015. just kind of

  1016. toddle on

  1017. our way.

  1018. True

  1019. repentance

  1020. longs for

  1021. change and

  1022. transformation.

  1023. Any one of

  1024. us can say

  1025. sorry.

  1026. We do

  1027. it all

  1028. the

  1029. time.

  1030. We say

  1031. sorry, but

  1032. we want to

  1033. stay as

  1034. we are.

  1035. We want

  1036. to stay

  1037. in control

  1038. of our

  1039. lives.

  1040. Whereas

  1041. sincere

  1042. repentance

  1043. says, I

  1044. want to

  1045. change my

  1046. actions.

  1047. That's why

  1048. it says in

  1049. verse 8,

  1050. wash your

  1051. hands.

  1052. It's about

  1053. action.

  1054. Lord, change

  1055. my actions.

  1056. And Lord,

  1057. change my

  1058. attitudes.

  1059. purify my

  1060. heart.

  1061. Or purify

  1062. my heart.

  1063. It's asking

  1064. God to

  1065. change us

  1066. so that we

  1067. are fully

  1068. devoted and

  1069. loyal to

  1070. him.

  1071. Not just

  1072. sorry, but

  1073. Lord, change

  1074. me completely

  1075. so that I

  1076. will not be

  1077. double-minded.

  1078. Running to

  1079. build friendships

  1080. with the

  1081. world instead

  1082. of building

  1083. my relationship

  1084. with God.

  1085. So we

  1086. submit, we

  1087. surrender, we

  1088. lay down our

  1089. weapons, we

  1090. come in

  1091. sincere repentance

  1092. wanting true

  1093. change and

  1094. transformation.

  1095. And third,

  1096. we are to

  1097. take sin

  1098. seriously.

  1099. Take sin

  1100. seriously,

  1101. verse 9.

  1102. Grieve,

  1103. mourn,

  1104. and wail.

  1105. change your

  1106. laughter to

  1107. mourning and

  1108. your joy to

  1109. gloom.

  1110. Now it

  1111. sounds awfully

  1112. depressing,

  1113. doesn't it?

  1114. Mourn,

  1115. wail,

  1116. gloom.

  1117. But it's

  1118. helping us to

  1119. see how we

  1120. should think

  1121. about our

  1122. sin.

  1123. We should

  1124. take it

  1125. seriously.

  1126. It's not

  1127. just to be

  1128. brushed under

  1129. the carpet

  1130. and go,

  1131. oh, it

  1132. doesn't matter,

  1133. that's just

  1134. the way I

  1135. am.

  1136. it does

  1137. matter.

  1138. It matters

  1139. deeply.

  1140. I found

  1141. this very

  1142. helpful, a

  1143. quote that I

  1144. came across

  1145. written by

  1146. Sam

  1147. Albury, who

  1148. has a very

  1149. helpful little

  1150. book on

  1151. James.

  1152. And this

  1153. is what he

  1154. says in

  1155. relation to

  1156. verse 9.

  1157. Just listen

  1158. to it.

  1159. It's very

  1160. helpful.

  1161. we are

  1162. not just

  1163. to regret

  1164. our sin,

  1165. but to

  1166. grieve over

  1167. it.

  1168. If we are

  1169. not more

  1170. emotional over

  1171. our sin

  1172. than we are

  1173. over our

  1174. sports team

  1175. success or

  1176. failures,

  1177. or our

  1178. children's

  1179. achievements or

  1180. disappointments,

  1181. then there is

  1182. something wrong.

  1183. And that

  1184. something is

  1185. that we do

  1186. not appreciate

  1187. what our

  1188. sin is.

  1189. and what it

  1190. cost our

  1191. saviour to

  1192. rescue us

  1193. from it.

  1194. Sin is

  1195. not cheap.

  1196. If I

  1197. want to

  1198. know how

  1199. serious my

  1200. sin is,

  1201. I need to

  1202. look at the

  1203. cross.

  1204. We all

  1205. need to

  1206. look at the

  1207. cross and

  1208. see Christ

  1209. who suffered

  1210. there, who

  1211. suffered hell

  1212. for us,

  1213. who saw

  1214. the depths

  1215. of what we

  1216. had done,

  1217. but yet

  1218. stood in

  1219. our place

  1220. and took

  1221. the blame

  1222. for our

  1223. sin, who

  1224. suffered hell

  1225. so that we

  1226. could be

  1227. forgiven.

  1228. And it's

  1229. only as I

  1230. look at the

  1231. cross, I

  1232. see the

  1233. seriousness of

  1234. my sin.

  1235. And as I

  1236. see how

  1237. serious it

  1238. is, I

  1239. can only

  1240. begin to

  1241. appreciate how

  1242. glorious my

  1243. salvation is,

  1244. how wonderful

  1245. God's grace is

  1246. that he

  1247. would do

  1248. that for

  1249. me.

  1250. And the

  1251. more I

  1252. see how

  1253. ugly my

  1254. sin is and

  1255. how rotten

  1256. I am to

  1257. the core,

  1258. then I

  1259. can only

  1260. begin to

  1261. see how

  1262. beautiful

  1263. Christ is,

  1264. how attractive

  1265. he is,

  1266. what grace

  1267. and mercy

  1268. flows from

  1269. him to

  1270. me.

  1271. You see,

  1272. if we

  1273. want to

  1274. know God's

  1275. grace,

  1276. well then

  1277. we must

  1278. repent

  1279. humbly,

  1280. repent of

  1281. our selfish

  1282. desires,

  1283. and receive

  1284. his grace.

  1285. So,

  1286. fights and

  1287. quarrels,

  1288. grace and

  1289. humility,

  1290. and then

  1291. third,

  1292. love and

  1293. obedience.

  1294. love and

  1295. obedience.

  1296. The evidence,

  1297. if you like,

  1298. the proof that

  1299. we have

  1300. humbly

  1301. repented,

  1302. that we've

  1303. laid down

  1304. our weapons,

  1305. we've hoisted

  1306. the white

  1307. flag,

  1308. we've been

  1309. sincere in

  1310. our repentance

  1311. and we've

  1312. taken our

  1313. sins seriously,

  1314. the evidence

  1315. that this is

  1316. effective in

  1317. our life is

  1318. or will be

  1319. seen in how

  1320. we treat

  1321. each other.

  1322. Look at

  1323. verse 11.

  1324. brothers and

  1325. sisters,

  1326. do not

  1327. slander

  1328. one another.

  1329. Do not

  1330. speak evil.

  1331. Don't use

  1332. your tongues

  1333. to crush

  1334. and break

  1335. one another.

  1336. Instead,

  1337. use your tongues

  1338. to build

  1339. each other

  1340. up and

  1341. be peacemakers.

  1342. Look at the

  1343. rest of

  1344. verse 11.

  1345. anyone who

  1346. speaks against

  1347. a brother

  1348. or sister

  1349. or judges

  1350. them,

  1351. speaks against

  1352. the law

  1353. and judges

  1354. it.

  1355. Well,

  1356. what does

  1357. the law

  1358. say?

  1359. What does it

  1360. mean that we

  1361. speak against

  1362. the law and

  1363. we judge

  1364. the law?

  1365. Well,

  1366. go back to

  1367. chapter 2

  1368. and verse 8

  1369. because here

  1370. James has

  1371. already reminded

  1372. us what the

  1373. law is about.

  1374. In fact,

  1375. he summarises

  1376. the whole

  1377. law in

  1378. this simple

  1379. statement.

  1380. James

    James 2:8

  1381. chapter 2

  1382. verse 8.

  1383. He says,

  1384. if you really

  1385. keep the

  1386. royal law

  1387. found in

  1388. scripture,

  1389. that is,

  1390. love your

  1391. neighbour as

  1392. yourself,

  1393. you are

  1394. doing right.

  1395. The royal

  1396. law,

  1397. the king's

  1398. law for

  1399. subjects,

  1400. for people

  1401. like us,

  1402. is love.

  1403. love your

  1404. neighbour as

  1405. yourself.

  1406. In this

  1407. context,

  1408. we are one

  1409. another's

  1410. neighbours.

  1411. Chapter 4

  1412. verse 12,

  1413. the end of

  1414. verse 12,

  1415. but you,

  1416. who are you

  1417. to judge

  1418. your neighbour?

  1419. He's talking

  1420. about the

  1421. church family.

  1422. We are to

  1423. love one

  1424. another.

  1425. Here's how

  1426. it works

  1427. out.

  1428. This is

  1429. what verse

  1430. 11 is

  1431. getting at.

  1432. If I

  1433. cause a

  1434. fight or

  1435. quarrel

  1436. with my

  1437. words,

  1438. what I'm

  1439. doing is

  1440. I'm

  1441. sitting in

  1442. superiority

  1443. to the

  1444. law.

  1445. Rather than

  1446. obeying the

  1447. law which

  1448. says love

  1449. your neighbour

  1450. as yourself,

  1451. I judge

  1452. it.

  1453. I stand

  1454. over the

  1455. law.

  1456. The law

  1457. says love,

  1458. but I

  1459. say I

  1460. know better

  1461. than what

  1462. the law

  1463. says.

  1464. I know

  1465. I should

  1466. love,

  1467. but they

  1468. must be

  1469. put in

  1470. their

  1471. place.

  1472. I

  1473. know I

  1474. should

  1475. love,

  1476. but they

  1477. need to

  1478. know how

  1479. much it

  1480. hurt me.

  1481. I

  1482. know I

  1483. should

  1484. love,

  1485. but they

  1486. need to

  1487. know that

  1488. they're

  1489. wrong,

  1490. and I'm

  1491. going to

  1492. tell them.

  1493. Love your

  1494. neighbour does

  1495. not apply

  1496. right now.

  1497. Do you

  1498. see?

  1499. That's what's

  1500. happening in

  1501. verse 11.

  1502. Look at the

  1503. rest of

  1504. verse 11.

  1505. when you

  1506. judge the

  1507. law,

  1508. you are

  1509. not keeping

  1510. it,

  1511. but sitting

  1512. in judgment

  1513. on it.

  1514. We're

  1515. disobeying

  1516. God's

  1517. law,

  1518. and we're

  1519. following out

  1520. our own

  1521. desires.

  1522. We're

  1523. saying,

  1524. I know

  1525. better than

  1526. God.

  1527. In fact,

  1528. I want

  1529. to be

  1530. God,

  1531. and I'm

  1532. going to

  1533. make up

  1534. my own

  1535. laws,

  1536. and loving

  1537. my neighbour

  1538. as myself

  1539. is not

  1540. one of

  1541. them.

  1542. But when

  1543. we humbly

  1544. repent,

  1545. when we

  1546. receive of

  1547. God's

  1548. rich,

  1549. amazing

  1550. grace to

  1551. us,

  1552. well then

  1553. our lives

  1554. begin to

  1555. be changed

  1556. and transformed,

  1557. and we

  1558. begin to

  1559. obey God's

  1560. law,

  1561. and we

  1562. love each

  1563. other as

  1564. our neighbour,

  1565. as our

  1566. self.

  1567. Rather than

  1568. cause fights

  1569. and quarrels,

  1570. we begin to

  1571. build each

  1572. other up,

  1573. our words

  1574. become words

  1575. of peacemaking,

  1576. rather than

  1577. quarrels and

  1578. infighting.

  1579. Here's the

  1580. heart of the

  1581. matter,

  1582. verse 12.

  1583. There is

  1584. only one

  1585. lawgiver and

  1586. judge,

  1587. that's God,

  1588. the one

  1589. who is

  1590. able to

  1591. save and

  1592. destroy.

  1593. You see,

  1594. if I

  1595. slander and

  1596. speak harshly

  1597. against another

  1598. person,

  1599. if I

  1600. speak

  1601. judgmentally

  1602. against

  1603. someone,

  1604. well in

  1605. fact what

  1606. I'm

  1607. pronouncing

  1608. is my

  1609. own

  1610. judgment

  1611. upon

  1612. myself,

  1613. because I'm

  1614. standing in

  1615. defiance of

  1616. God's law,

  1617. and God's

  1618. will will be

  1619. done.

  1620. He will

  1621. judge me,

  1622. and I

  1623. will be

  1624. destroyed,

  1625. as it says

  1626. in verse 12.

  1627. I will

  1628. not stand

  1629. against his

  1630. judgment.

  1631. But yet,

  1632. if I

  1633. obey God's

  1634. command,

  1635. if I'm

  1636. speaking in

  1637. love and

  1638. seeking to

  1639. build others

  1640. up, if I've

  1641. received his

  1642. grace,

  1643. well I can be

  1644. confident that

  1645. God who has

  1646. given me

  1647. grace,

  1648. verse 12,

  1649. will save

  1650. me,

  1651. rather than

  1652. destroy me.

  1653. So have

  1654. you

  1655. repented?

  1656. Have we

  1657. humbled

  1658. ourselves

  1659. before God

  1660. and received

  1661. his grace?

  1662. Remember the

  1663. question we

  1664. asked at the

  1665. very beginning,

  1666. as we

  1667. started our

  1668. time this

  1669. morning?

  1670. We asked

  1671. this question,

  1672. what are you

  1673. like at

  1674. asking for

  1675. help?

  1676. I'm fine,

  1677. I can do

  1678. it, I

  1679. don't need

  1680. help, I

  1681. can go it

  1682. alone.

  1683. Look what it

  1684. says in

  1685. verse 6,

  1686. but he

  1687. gives us

  1688. more grace.

  1689. That is why

  1690. scripture says

  1691. God opposes

  1692. the proud,

  1693. but shows

  1694. grace to

  1695. the humble.

  1696. You see,

  1697. we're not a

  1698. perfect church

  1699. and we're not

  1700. perfect people.

  1701. And to some

  1702. extent, that's

  1703. okay, because

  1704. that's what we

  1705. are to admit

  1706. to God.

  1707. I'm not

  1708. perfect.

  1709. And I

  1710. need your

  1711. grace.

  1712. I need your

  1713. favour in my

  1714. life, so

  1715. that I can

  1716. begin to live

  1717. as you call

  1718. me to live.

  1719. And God

  1720. will give us

  1721. more grace,

  1722. more grace

  1723. than we could

  1724. ever think of

  1725. or imagine,

  1726. to love one

  1727. another well.

  1728. God.

  1729. What a

  1730. great God

  1731. we have.

  1732. Let's pray.

  1733. Let's pray.
