  1. It's to chapter 5, verse 6.

  2. That starts on page 1215 of the Red Church Bible.

  3. That's James, chapter 4, verse 13.

    James 4:13

  4. Now listen, you who say,

  5. Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city,

  6. spend a year there, carry on business and make money.

  7. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.

  8. What is your life?

  9. You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

  10. Instead, you ought to say,

  11. If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.

  12. As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes.

  13. All such boasting is evil.

  14. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it,

  15. it is sin for them.

  16. Now listen, you rich people.

  17. Weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.

  18. Your wealth has rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.

  19. Your gold and silver are corroded.

  20. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire.

  21. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.

  22. Look, the wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields

  23. are crying out against you.

  24. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.

  25. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence.

  26. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.

  27. You have condemned and murdered the innocent one who was not opposing you.

  28. Thank you, Sam.

  29. Well, we've been looking at this short letter of James.

  30. If you've missed any of the talks along the way from different people,

  31. then you can just check out the church website

  32. and you can catch up on any of the talks there.

  33. Let's pray as we ask for God's help.

  34. My dear brothers and sisters,

  35. take note of this.

  36. Everyone should be quick to listen.

  37. Slow to speak

  38. and slow to become angry.

  39. Father, help us

  40. to listen clearly to your word,

  41. to your truth.

  42. Not to listen to our own thoughts and imaginations,

  43. but to listen clearly to what you are saying to us

  44. through your word.

  45. May it penetrate deep into our hearts

  46. and cause us to run to our Redeemer,

  47. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  48. For your glory we ask these things.

  49. Amen.

  50. Amen.

  51. Well, one of the most beautiful things about church

  52. is diversity.

  53. This is what our welcome brochure says.

  54. If you haven't got the term program,

  55. you can get it on your way out.

  56. But here's what it says.

  57. We are a diverse group of people

  58. of different backgrounds and ages.

  59. Church is the people,

  60. not the building.

  61. And God's people are a family.

  62. Brothers and sisters,

  63. united through a common faith in Jesus.

  64. You are very welcome to join with us.

  65. Now, through the gospel,

  66. people from different kinds of backgrounds

  67. are united together.

  68. And it's wonderful to see that in this church,

  69. in this gathering,

  70. different nationalities are here.

  71. People speak different languages.

  72. We have different cultures,

  73. different experiences.

  74. And through our faith in Christ,

  75. we are united together as one.

  76. But diversity also has the potential

  77. to cause division, doesn't it?

  78. The very fact that I'm different to you

  79. and you're different to me

  80. means that there will be times

  81. we struggle to relate to each other.

  82. One area of diversity that can cause division

  83. is our economic status.

  84. The haves and the have-nots.

  85. Or as James has been teaching

  86. through his letter,

  87. the rich and the poor.

  88. And as we read through James,

  89. if you were to read through it briefly and quickly,

  90. you will see that there's a problem.

  91. The rich are looking down on the poor.

  92. And the poor are grumbling about the rich.

  93. And all of this has resulted in fights and quarrels.

  94. Division,

  95. if you remember from last week,

  96. chapter 4, verse 1.

  97. What causes the fights and quarrels among you?

  98. Well, don't they come from your own desires

  99. that battle within you?

  100. You desire,

  101. but you do not have.

  102. So you kill,

  103. you covet,

  104. but you cannot get what you want.

  105. So you quarrel and fight.

  106. More than anything else,

  107. our economic status has the potential

  108. to cause great division.

  109. So James has something very important to say to us.

  110. Look at chapter 4, verse 13.

  111. Now listen.

  112. Pay attention.

  113. Listen.

  114. You who say,

  115. today or tomorrow,

  116. we will go to this or that city,

  117. spend a year there,

  118. carry on business,

  119. and make money.

  120. Or look at chapter 5, verse 1.

  121. Now listen.

  122. Pay attention.

  123. Listen.

  124. Listen.

  125. Listen.

  126. You rich people,

  127. weep and wail because of the misery

  128. that is coming on you.

  129. Listen.

  130. You who desire wealth.

  131. Listen.

  132. You who have wealth.

  133. You see, the reality is,

  134. in a church like ours,

  135. as in any church, I guess,

  136. there are those who have more,

  137. and there will be those who have less.

  138. Our economic status is different.

  139. There are people who are employed or unemployed.

  140. People who own their house.

  141. Others rent their house.

  142. Some have two cars.

  143. Others have no car.

  144. Some can afford holidays away.

  145. Some have no holidays away.

  146. Some are in their nice new clothes.

  147. Some come in the same old clothes.

  148. Those who don't have,

  149. well, they can be bitter and want more.

  150. And those who do have,

  151. can be selfish and not give.

  152. But here's the issue for all of us, I think,

  153. as we look at this text this morning.

  154. There is no sin in having wealth

  155. or wanting to make money.

  156. There's nothing wrong with wealth.

  157. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make money.

  158. It's how we acquire the wealth.

  159. And it's the way in which we use it

  160. that can be sinful.

  161. How we get it and how we use it,

  162. that is what can be sinful.

  163. So this morning, as we look at this text together,

  164. let's check our heart attitude

  165. as we look at these two groups.

  166. Those who desire wealth

  167. and those who have wealth.

  168. So first,

  169. the desire for money.

  170. Those who want wealth.

  171. Chapter 4, verse 13.

  172. Now listen.

  173. Listen.

  174. Listen.

  175. You who say.

  176. Today or tomorrow,

  177. we'll go to this or that city,

  178. spend a year there,

  179. carry on business,

  180. and make money.

  181. Now times may have changed.

  182. We may be 2,000 years on

  183. from the time James wrote this.

  184. But really,

  185. our human desires have not.

  186. We want to make money.

  187. We always want more money.

  188. In fact,

  189. it can control our whole life.

  190. So,

  191. our life goes something like this.

  192. Our plans go,

  193. I'll go to college.

  194. I'm going to get a qualification.

  195. Then I'm going to get myself a job.

  196. Work for a few years.

  197. Get some experience.

  198. Then I'm going to move to London

  199. or move to New York.

  200. You can make great money

  201. in these great big cities.

  202. Then I'm going to come home

  203. and, well,

  204. I'll start up my own business

  205. and the sky's the limit.

  206. Or perhaps maybe you're a little bit older

  207. and you're thinking,

  208. well,

  209. I've been working a while.

  210. I need to do some more training,

  211. upskill,

  212. and get a better salary.

  213. I'll get my mortgage paid off early,

  214. cash in my shares,

  215. move into a bigger house,

  216. start drawing on my pension,

  217. and,

  218. what are your plans

  219. for making money?

  220. Well,

  221. there's nothing wrong

  222. with planning.

  223. Nothing wrong

  224. with making money.

  225. It's wise and responsible.

  226. In fact,

  227. the scriptures warn

  228. against those

  229. who are lazy

  230. and don't plan.

  231. Listen to this

  232. from Proverbs 10,

    Proverbs 10:4

  233. verse 4.

  234. Lazy hands

  235. make for poverty,

  236. but diligent hands

  237. bring wealth.

  238. Here's another one,

  239. Proverbs 21,

    Proverbs 21:4

  240. verse 4.

  241. The plans of the diligent

  242. lead to profit,

  243. as surely as haste

  244. leads to poverty.

  245. You see,

  246. it's good to plan out

  247. and think about

  248. how we are making money.

  249. We need money to live.

  250. We need money to buy things.

  251. It's not wrong.

  252. But,

  253. if the desire for wealth,

  254. if making money

  255. becomes my one priority,

  256. then we need to wake up.

  257. Look at what James

  258. has to say to us.

  259. First,

  260. we do not control the future.

  261. Look at verse 14.

  262. Why?

  263. You do not even know

  264. what will happen

  265. tomorrow.

  266. What are your plans

  267. for making money tomorrow?

  268. Well,

  269. tomorrow,

  270. you might wake up

  271. with a pain in your head

  272. and discover

  273. you have a cancerous tumour.

  274. Tomorrow,

  275. your boss may tell you

  276. that they need to make cuts

  277. and, well,

  278. you've been let go.

  279. Tomorrow,

  280. the housing market

  281. may take a dive

  282. and you'll discover

  283. that you're living

  284. with negative equity

  285. and you can't pay off

  286. your mortgage.

  287. You're a fool

  288. if you think

  289. you know

  290. what is going to happen

  291. tomorrow

  292. or that your plans

  293. are never going

  294. to be interrupted.

  295. tomorrow,

  296. your dreams

  297. and desires

  298. for wealth

  299. can be shattered

  300. in a moment.

  301. We do not

  302. control

  303. the future.

  304. And second,

  305. we do not live

  306. forever.

  307. Look at the rest

  308. of verse 14.

  309. What is your life?

  310. How do you think

  311. about your life?

  312. Well,

  313. here's the answer.

  314. You are a mist

  315. that appears

  316. for a little while

  317. and then

  318. vanishes.

  319. I was reminded

  320. of this again

  321. as I listened

  322. to the news

  323. this week.

  324. Did you see

  325. what happened?

  326. Those two young

  327. athletic lads,

  328. their lives

  329. and careers

  330. before them

  331. take a swim

  332. on a sunny day

  333. in a quarry

  334. and both drown.

  335. Their life

  336. snapped out.

  337. A young father

  338. providing

  339. for seven

  340. of his children

  341. on the way

  342. to the beach

  343. turns a corner,

  344. hits a tractor

  345. and tragically

  346. dies.

  347. Or the innocent

  348. loving grandfather

  349. who goes off

  350. to the gym

  351. early one morning

  352. and gets shot

  353. in some other

  354. gang-related attack.

  355. Well,

  356. we might escape

  357. those things.

  358. We might live

  359. until we're 70,

  360. 80.

  361. Who knows,

  362. with medicine

  363. today,

  364. we might even

  365. reach 90.

  366. We may go

  367. through life

  368. enjoying great

  369. health,

  370. but sooner

  371. or later

  372. we will all

  373. die.

  374. Our plans

  375. to make money,

  376. our hopes

  377. to enjoy

  378. our wealth

  379. will disappear

  380. like a puff

  381. of smoke.

  382. End of verse 14,

  383. you are a mist.

  384. You're just

  385. a vapor

  386. that appears

  387. for a little

  388. while

  389. and then

  390. vanishes.

  391. We do not

  392. control the future.

  393. We do not

  394. live

  395. forever.

  396. So,

  397. we need to

  398. live with

  399. God's

  400. priorities

  401. in mind.

  402. Verse 15,

  403. instead,

  404. we ought

  405. to say,

  406. if it is

  407. the Lord's

  408. will,

  409. we will

  410. live

  411. and do

  412. this

  413. or that.

  414. Instead

  415. of making

  416. arrogant

  417. statements

  418. of what

  419. I will do

  420. and where

  421. I will live

  422. and when

  423. I'm going

  424. to move

  425. and how

  426. much I'm

  427. going to

  428. make in

  429. life,

  430. I humbly

  431. acknowledge

  432. that my

  433. life is

  434. in the

  435. sovereign

  436. hands

  437. of my

  438. creator

  439. God,

  440. the God

  441. who gives

  442. me life,

  443. the God

  444. who is

  445. giving you

  446. the breath

  447. that you

  448. breathe right

  449. now,

  450. the God

  451. who orders

  452. my life,

  453. who rules

  454. my life,

  455. the God

  456. who,

  457. when he

  458. decides,

  459. will take

  460. my life.

  461. I am

  462. not in

  463. control of

  464. my destiny.

  465. I do

  466. not live

  467. on this

  468. earth

  469. forever.

  470. And to

  471. live any

  472. other kind

  473. of way,

  474. well that's

  475. to put

  476. myself in

  477. the place

  478. of God.

  479. Look at

  480. verse 16.

  481. As it

  482. is,

  483. you boast

  484. in your

  485. arrogant

  486. schemes.

  487. Of all

  488. the things

  489. we're going

  490. to do

  491. and all

  492. the ways

  493. we're going

  494. to make

  495. money,

  496. all such

  497. boasting

  498. is evil.

  499. If our

  500. desire for

  501. wealth,

  502. if our

  503. plans to

  504. make money

  505. is our

  506. priority,

  507. if my

  508. sole goal

  509. in life

  510. is just

  511. to be

  512. rich,

  513. it's an

  514. evil

  515. boasting.

  516. It's

  517. saying,

  518. my will

  519. be done,

  520. my

  521. kingdom

  522. come.

  523. Remember

  524. what the

  525. apostle Paul

  526. reminded

  527. Timothy,

  528. and well,

  529. he reminds

  530. us through

  531. God's

  532. word.

  533. For the

  534. love of

  535. money,

  536. not money,

  537. the love

  538. of money,

  539. is a

  540. root of

  541. all kinds

  542. of evil.

  543. Some

  544. people,

  545. eager for

  546. money,

  547. have wandered

  548. from the

  549. faith and

  550. pierced

  551. themselves with

  552. many griefs.

  553. You see,

  554. if I am a

  555. Christian,

  556. if I am

  557. seeking to

  558. follow the

  559. Lord Jesus,

  560. then I

  561. should be

  562. seeking God's

  563. will,

  564. God's

  565. desires.

  566. What is

  567. God's

  568. heartbeat?

  569. Not what

  570. do I

  571. want.

  572. Verse 17,

  573. if anyone

  574. then knows

  575. the good

  576. they ought

  577. to do

  578. and doesn't

  579. do it,

  580. it is sin

  581. for them.

  582. If you

  583. know what

  584. God's

  585. will is,

  586. what God's

  587. word says,

  588. and you

  589. don't do

  590. it,

  591. and you

  592. live your

  593. own desires

  594. about making

  595. your own

  596. plans of

  597. how you're

  598. going to

  599. make money,

  600. well,

  601. that is

  602. sin.

  603. If I

  604. am so

  605. eager for

  606. riches,

  607. so busy

  608. at work

  609. that I

  610. neglect time

  611. with my

  612. wife and

  613. kids,

  614. it's

  615. sinful.

  616. If I

  617. desire

  618. wealth so

  619. much that

  620. I haven't

  621. got time

  622. to meet

  623. with God's

  624. people,

  625. it's

  626. sinful.

  627. If I'm

  628. so busy

  629. and so

  630. preoccupied

  631. about thinking

  632. about money

  633. and what

  634. money I'm

  635. going to

  636. lose and

  637. how I'm

  638. going to

  639. make ground

  640. with it,

  641. if I'm

  642. so preoccupied

  643. I haven't

  644. got time

  645. to listen

  646. to God's

  647. word or

  648. talk to

  649. God,

  650. it's

  651. sinful.

  652. When the

  653. desires for

  654. wealth control

  655. us and

  656. consume us,

  657. it's making

  658. money our

  659. God.

  660. And James

  661. is saying

  662. to us,

  663. we need

  664. to change

  665. our

  666. priorities

  667. and

  668. quickly.

  669. Verse

  670. 15,

  671. instead we

  672. ought to

  673. say,

  674. if it is

  675. the Lord's

  676. will,

  677. we will

  678. live and

  679. do this

  680. or that.

  681. What does

  682. God desire

  683. of my

  684. life?

  685. So the

  686. desire for

  687. money,

  688. those who

  689. want

  690. wealth.

  691. But then

  692. he moves

  693. on to

  694. talk about

  695. the danger

  696. of

  697. riches,

  698. those who

  699. have

  700. wealth.

  701. Look at

  702. chapter 5

  703. verse 1.

  704. Now

  705. listen,

  706. listen,

  707. you rich

  708. people,

  709. weep and

  710. wail because

  711. of the

  712. misery that

  713. is coming

  714. on you.

  715. What sobering

  716. words to be

  717. reading.

  718. If riches

  719. is our

  720. goal and

  721. riches is

  722. what we

  723. get,

  724. then in

  725. a sense

  726. that's all

  727. we're going

  728. to get.

  729. Our

  730. financial and

  731. material

  732. resources

  733. will be

  734. our

  735. earthly

  736. and

  737. temporary

  738. reward

  739. and that

  740. will be

  741. it.

  742. Rather than

  743. eternal

  744. riches,

  745. rather than

  746. enjoying the

  747. beauty and

  748. the fullness

  749. of God's

  750. eternal

  751. kingdom,

  752. we will

  753. live for

  754. an eternity

  755. without

  756. Christ.

  757. That's

  758. behind these

  759. words here

  760. in verse 1.

  761. Weep and

  762. wail.

  763. It's the

  764. one who's

  765. standing before

  766. God's

  767. judgment with

  768. nothing to

  769. offer,

  770. only a

  771. wasted life

  772. of living

  773. for self.

  774. You see,

  775. what we

  776. think about

  777. wealth and

  778. how we

  779. use the

  780. wealth that

  781. God has

  782. given to

  783. us has

  784. eternal

  785. consequences.

  786. wealth.

  787. And James

  788. is warning

  789. those who

  790. have wealth,

  791. and by the

  792. way, that's

  793. all of us,

  794. he's asking

  795. us, are we

  796. guilty of

  797. misusing the

  798. wealth that

  799. God has

  800. given us?

  801. Well, let's

  802. have a look,

  803. shall we?

  804. Let's see

  805. and examine

  806. how we are

  807. using our

  808. wealth.

  809. first, am

  810. I a

  811. wasteful

  812. hoarder?

  813. I'm sure

  814. you've seen

  815. the TV

  816. programs,

  817. hoarders.

  818. They haven't

  819. room to

  820. move in

  821. their house

  822. with the

  823. pile of

  824. stuff they

  825. have

  826. everywhere.

  827. Well, here's

  828. hoarders for

  829. you, verse

  830. 2.

  831. Your wealth

  832. has rotted

  833. and moths

  834. have eaten

  835. your clothes.

  836. Your gold

  837. and silver

  838. are corroded.

  839. The corrosion

  840. will testify

  841. against you

  842. and eat

  843. your flesh

  844. like fire.

  845. You have

  846. hoarded

  847. wealth

  848. in the

  849. last days.

  850. I wonder

  851. if someone

  852. were to go

  853. through your

  854. house,

  855. through your

  856. possessions,

  857. just free

  858. reign to

  859. rummage and

  860. root,

  861. what would

  862. they find?

  863. Designer

  864. clothes in

  865. your wardrobe

  866. that you've

  867. bought but

  868. never wore?

  869. The latest

  870. techno gadget

  871. that's still

  872. in an

  873. unopened

  874. box?

  875. Maybe

  876. unused

  877. furniture

  878. that sits

  879. collecting dust

  880. in the attic?

  881. Well, we're

  882. all guilty,

  883. aren't we?

  884. We are, by

  885. nature,

  886. wasteful

  887. hoarders.

  888. We buy

  889. things we

  890. don't need.

  891. We store

  892. stuff we

  893. never use.

  894. We accumulate

  895. books that

  896. are not

  897. read,

  898. toys for

  899. our children

  900. that never

  901. get played

  902. with,

  903. fitness

  904. machines we

  905. never use,

  906. power tools

  907. that never

  908. get plugged

  909. in.

  910. Yes, I

  911. buy those

  912. bargains in

  913. Aldi too.

  914. There's

  915. someone else

  916. who does

  917. too, or

  918. somebody.

  919. Just because

  920. we can.

  921. I've got

  922. the money,

  923. so I

  924. spend the

  925. money.

  926. Why not?

  927. I've earned

  928. it, I've

  929. worked for

  930. it, it's

  931. mine to

  932. do as I

  933. please.

  934. All this

  935. wasteful

  936. hoarding

  937. is actually

  938. evidence against

  939. us.

  940. Look at the

  941. end of

  942. verse 3.

  943. Their

  944. corrosion

  945. will testify

  946. against you

  947. and eat

  948. your flesh

  949. like fire.

  950. it will

  951. be evidence

  952. that condemns

  953. us in

  954. judgment.

  955. What have

  956. we done

  957. with all

  958. that hoarding?

  959. Well, here's

  960. another one.

  961. If that

  962. wasn't

  963. uncomfortable

  964. enough for

  965. us, what

  966. about this?

  967. Greedy

  968. oppression.

  969. Verse 4.

  970. Look,

  971. the wages

  972. you fail to

  973. pay the

  974. workers who

  975. mowed your

  976. fields are

  977. crying out

  978. against you.

  979. If you're

  980. an employer,

  981. do you

  982. pay your

  983. employees

  984. fairly and

  985. promptly?

  986. We don't

  987. need to

  988. own a

  989. company.

  990. When someone

  991. comes to

  992. do work in

  993. your house

  994. or you

  995. need to

  996. have your

  997. car fixed,

  998. do you

  999. pay them

  1000. everything

  1001. that should

  1002. be paid

  1003. and ought

  1004. to be

  1005. paid?

  1006. And if

  1007. they happen

  1008. to under

  1009. charge you

  1010. or they've

  1011. missed

  1012. something,

  1013. do you

  1014. remind them

  1015. and say,

  1016. actually,

  1017. I should

  1018. be paying

  1019. you a bit

  1020. more?

  1021. Or do you

  1022. just keep

  1023. quiet and

  1024. go,

  1025. saved a few

  1026. more pennies

  1027. there?

  1028. Of course,

  1029. we never

  1030. like to

  1031. think of

  1032. ourselves

  1033. as greedy

  1034. oppressors.

  1035. That's the

  1036. corporate world,

  1037. isn't it?

  1038. Well,

  1039. think about

  1040. the food

  1041. we buy

  1042. or the

  1043. fashion

  1044. labels we

  1045. wear.

  1046. Coffee and

  1047. bananas have

  1048. fair trade

  1049. stickers on

  1050. them for a

  1051. reason.

  1052. You see,

  1053. when we

  1054. opt for a

  1055. cheaper

  1056. coffee,

  1057. well,

  1058. we're

  1059. exploiting

  1060. the producer.

  1061. We're happy

  1062. to get it

  1063. for 50

  1064. cents less

  1065. without a

  1066. single thought

  1067. of a farmer

  1068. who only gets

  1069. two dollars

  1070. a day.

  1071. Or think

  1072. about the

  1073. clothes that

  1074. we're wearing.

  1075. maybe wearing

  1076. right now.

  1077. Designer

  1078. clothes,

  1079. fashion

  1080. labels.

  1081. We can

  1082. pay 100

  1083. euros for

  1084. a pair

  1085. of shoes,

  1086. 150 for

  1087. a top,

  1088. no bother.

  1089. But think

  1090. of the

  1091. exploitation

  1092. that takes

  1093. place in

  1094. the sweat

  1095. jobs that

  1096. produce them.

  1097. If we

  1098. continue to

  1099. buy from

  1100. companies that

  1101. use child

  1102. labour,

  1103. their cries

  1104. will sound

  1105. our

  1106. judgment.

  1107. Look at

  1108. the end of

  1109. verse 4.

  1110. the cries

  1111. of the

  1112. harvesters

  1113. have reached

  1114. the ears

  1115. of the

  1116. Lord

  1117. Almighty.

  1118. When we

  1119. misuse

  1120. our money

  1121. for our

  1122. own self,

  1123. well,

  1124. the cries

  1125. are crying

  1126. out.

  1127. Verse 6.

  1128. You have

  1129. condemned

  1130. and murdered

  1131. the innocent

  1132. one who

  1133. is not

  1134. opposing you.

  1135. You say,

  1136. just because

  1137. of things I

  1138. buy,

  1139. I haven't

  1140. killed

  1141. anyone.

  1142. man.

  1143. Well,

  1144. maybe not

  1145. directly,

  1146. but indirectly,

  1147. the way we

  1148. use our

  1149. money,

  1150. the knock-on

  1151. effects it

  1152. has down

  1153. the line,

  1154. poor working

  1155. conditions,

  1156. means that

  1157. people do

  1158. die.

  1159. What does

  1160. these words

  1161. have to say

  1162. to us who

  1163. live in

  1164. our affluent

  1165. West?

  1166. wasteful

  1167. hoarders,

  1168. greedy

  1169. oppressors,

  1170. selfish

  1171. extravagance.

  1172. Verse 5.

  1173. You have

  1174. lived on

  1175. earth in

  1176. luxury and

  1177. self-indulgence.

  1178. You have

  1179. fattened

  1180. yourselves in

  1181. the day of

  1182. slaughter.

  1183. While we

  1184. indulge

  1185. ourselves and

  1186. fatten

  1187. ourselves up

  1188. with things

  1189. we don't

  1190. need to

  1191. eat,

  1192. others die.

  1193. We spend

  1194. what we

  1195. have on

  1196. luxuries,

  1197. not

  1198. necessities.

  1199. We justify

  1200. our wants

  1201. while ignoring

  1202. others'

  1203. needs.

  1204. things.

  1205. Well, let

  1206. me share

  1207. with you

  1208. something

  1209. personal,

  1210. something that

  1211. I'm ashamed

  1212. of,

  1213. something that

  1214. is sinful.

  1215. When I

  1216. was in

  1217. Ghana

  1218. recently,

  1219. I bought

  1220. this small

  1221. wooden

  1222. carving as

  1223. a gift.

  1224. Clearly,

  1225. the lady who

  1226. was selling

  1227. it didn't

  1228. have much

  1229. money.

  1230. Obviously,

  1231. she was in

  1232. great need.

  1233. nevertheless,

  1234. I asked how

  1235. much it

  1236. was,

  1237. and then I

  1238. immediately

  1239. offered less.

  1240. I walked

  1241. away very

  1242. proud that

  1243. I had

  1244. haggled the

  1245. price down.

  1246. When I

  1247. got home,

  1248. I discovered

  1249. that during

  1250. my trip I

  1251. had lost

  1252. a 50

  1253. euro note.

  1254. It annoyed

  1255. me for

  1256. days.

  1257. I wondered

  1258. where I

  1259. had lost

  1260. it,

  1261. going through

  1262. all the

  1263. different

  1264. places.

  1265. Could it

  1266. have been

  1267. here,

  1268. could it

  1269. have been

  1270. there,

  1271. I searched

  1272. my bags

  1273. over and

  1274. over again,

  1275. I checked

  1276. my money

  1277. belt at

  1278. least five

  1279. times,

  1280. turned it

  1281. inside out,

  1282. no 50

  1283. euro note.

  1284. I was

  1285. desperately

  1286. concerned

  1287. for my

  1288. money that

  1289. I had

  1290. lost.

  1291. And then I

  1292. realised that

  1293. I had not

  1294. given that

  1295. poor lady

  1296. a second

  1297. thought.

  1298. I am

  1299. guilty

  1300. of selfish

  1301. extravagance,

  1302. greedy

  1303. greedy

  1304. oppression,

  1305. wasteful

  1306. hoarding.

  1307. James

  1308. is serious

  1309. in his

  1310. warning to

  1311. those who

  1312. are rich,

  1313. to those

  1314. who have

  1315. wealth.

  1316. Craig

  1317. Blomberg,

  1318. an author,

  1319. writer,

  1320. drives the

  1321. point home.

  1322. Follow on

  1323. the screen.

  1324. this is what

  1325. he says,

  1326. if a person

  1327. claims to

  1328. be a

  1329. Christian,

  1330. is aware

  1331. of the

  1332. acute

  1333. physical

  1334. needs of

  1335. desperately

  1336. poor

  1337. believers

  1338. at home

  1339. or abroad,

  1340. is in

  1341. any position

  1342. to help,

  1343. but never

  1344. does a

  1345. single thing

  1346. except to

  1347. wish them

  1348. well,

  1349. that person's

  1350. inaction

  1351. disproves

  1352. his or

  1353. her

  1354. profession

  1355. of

  1356. faith.

  1357. Challenging,

  1358. eh?

  1359. True

  1360. faith,

  1361. you see,

  1362. is seen

  1363. by generous

  1364. giving,

  1365. not wasteful

  1366. hoarding.

  1367. In

  1368. seeking

  1369. justice,

  1370. not greedy

  1371. oppression.

  1372. Through

  1373. self-sacrifice,

  1374. not selfish

  1375. extravagance.

  1376. You see,

  1377. when it

  1378. comes to

  1379. giving of

  1380. all the

  1381. resources

  1382. and the

  1383. financial

  1384. wealth

  1385. we have,

  1386. when it

  1387. comes to

  1388. giving and

  1389. spending,

  1390. the question

  1391. should be

  1392. this,

  1393. and follow

  1394. this clearly,

  1395. the question

  1396. should be,

  1397. how much

  1398. can I

  1399. spend,

  1400. not how

  1401. much

  1402. should I

  1403. spend,

  1404. or should

  1405. I give

  1406. rather?

  1407. In other

  1408. words,

  1409. what can

  1410. I spend

  1411. out of

  1412. my giving?

  1413. Because

  1414. everything

  1415. that I

  1416. have has

  1417. been given

  1418. by God,

  1419. belongs to

  1420. him,

  1421. it's not

  1422. mine,

  1423. so I

  1424. need to

  1425. ask,

  1426. what can I

  1427. spend out

  1428. of my

  1429. giving?

  1430. Once

  1431. again,

  1432. as we

  1433. look into

  1434. God's word,

  1435. as James

  1436. 1 reminds

  1437. us,

  1438. it's like

  1439. looking into

  1440. a mirror,

  1441. it reflects

  1442. back on

  1443. us,

  1444. revealing

  1445. us what

  1446. our hearts

  1447. are really

  1448. like,

  1449. and showing

  1450. us our

  1451. desperate

  1452. need of

  1453. Christ.

  1454. So the

  1455. desire for

  1456. money,

  1457. the danger

  1458. of riches,

  1459. which leads

  1460. us to

  1461. something

  1462. encouraging

  1463. for us

  1464. all,

  1465. that the

  1466. poor and

  1467. rich,

  1468. we all

  1469. need

  1470. Christ.

  1471. You see,

  1472. whatever

  1473. economic

  1474. status we

  1475. may think

  1476. we are

  1477. in,

  1478. we all

  1479. need

  1480. Christ.

  1481. Here's

  1482. what James

  1483. says to

  1484. those who

  1485. desire

  1486. wealth,

  1487. and those

  1488. who have

  1489. wealth,

  1490. those who

  1491. would say,

  1492. I need

  1493. money,

  1494. and those

  1495. who say,

  1496. well,

  1497. no,

  1498. I have

  1499. money.

  1500. He's

  1501. already

  1502. told us

  1503. about it.

  1504. Go back

  1505. to chapter

  1506. 1,

  1507. verse 9

  1508. and 10.

  1509. James

    James 1:9

  1510. chapter 1,

  1511. verses 9

  1512. and 10.

  1513. Believers

  1514. in humble

  1515. circumstances,

  1516. those who

  1517. don't have,

  1518. those who

  1519. struggle,

  1520. financially,

  1521. believers

  1522. in humble

  1523. circumstances

  1524. ought to

  1525. take pride

  1526. in their

  1527. high position.

  1528. But the

  1529. rich,

  1530. those who

  1531. have,

  1532. well,

  1533. they should

  1534. take pride

  1535. in their

  1536. humiliation,

  1537. since they

  1538. will pass

  1539. away like

  1540. a wild

  1541. flower.

  1542. Look,

  1543. he's saying,

  1544. if your

  1545. economic

  1546. status means

  1547. you don't

  1548. have much,

  1549. or that

  1550. you have

  1551. needs and

  1552. you struggle

  1553. to pay

  1554. your rent

  1555. or you

  1556. struggle to

  1557. meet your

  1558. bills.

  1559. Verse 9,

  1560. believers in

  1561. humble

  1562. circumstances,

  1563. well,

  1564. take pride

  1565. in your

  1566. high position.

  1567. He's saying,

  1568. remember the

  1569. gospel.

  1570. Remember what

  1571. Christ has

  1572. done for

  1573. you.

  1574. you may

  1575. financially

  1576. struggle,

  1577. but through

  1578. Christ and

  1579. in Christ

  1580. and through

  1581. faith in

  1582. him,

  1583. you are

  1584. spiritually

  1585. rich.

  1586. You don't

  1587. need to have

  1588. great wealth

  1589. to make it

  1590. in life,

  1591. to be

  1592. someone.

  1593. In

  1594. Christ you

  1595. have made

  1596. it,

  1597. you are

  1598. someone.

  1599. You belong

  1600. to Christ.

  1601. You are

  1602. his.

  1603. and through

  1604. him you

  1605. have received

  1606. great blessing,

  1607. forgiveness of

  1608. all of your

  1609. sins,

  1610. the presence

  1611. of the

  1612. Holy Spirit,

  1613. his peace

  1614. upon you,

  1615. and an

  1616. eternal

  1617. inheritance,

  1618. the kingdom

  1619. of heaven

  1620. itself,

  1621. the new

  1622. heavens and

  1623. the new

  1624. earth that

  1625. can never

  1626. be taken

  1627. from you.

  1628. believers in

  1629. humble

  1630. circumstances,

  1631. take pride

  1632. in your

  1633. high position.

  1634. Don't

  1635. grumble at

  1636. the rich

  1637. and make

  1638. money your

  1639. goal and

  1640. your priority.

  1641. Rejoice

  1642. that you

  1643. have every

  1644. spiritual

  1645. blessing in

  1646. Christ.

  1647. Christ.

  1648. If you

  1649. are in

  1650. Christ,

  1651. you will

  1652. never be

  1653. lost,

  1654. but you

  1655. are his

  1656. forever.

  1657. On the

  1658. other hand,

  1659. if your

  1660. economic status

  1661. means that

  1662. you have

  1663. plenty and

  1664. well you're

  1665. in great

  1666. wealth,

  1667. look at

  1668. verse 10.

  1669. But the

  1670. rich should

  1671. take pride

  1672. in their

  1673. humiliation,

  1674. since they

  1675. will pass

  1676. away like

  1677. a wild

  1678. flower.

  1679. Again,

  1680. he's

  1681. directing us

  1682. saying,

  1683. remember the

  1684. gospel,

  1685. remember

  1686. Christ.

  1687. You may

  1688. buy all

  1689. you want,

  1690. but you

  1691. cannot buy

  1692. what you

  1693. most need,

  1694. God's

  1695. grace and

  1696. mercy.

  1697. You may

  1698. have savings

  1699. and wealth

  1700. for your

  1701. entire life,

  1702. but remember

  1703. this,

  1704. verse 10,

  1705. you will

  1706. fade away

  1707. like a

  1708. flower.

  1709. You can

  1710. have shares

  1711. and pensions,

  1712. but without

  1713. Christ's

  1714. intervention in

  1715. your life,

  1716. you are

  1717. spiritually

  1718. bankrupt.

  1719. You have

  1720. nothing.

  1721. You are

  1722. nothing without

  1723. Christ.

  1724. Don't pride

  1725. yourself in

  1726. how well you've

  1727. done financially,

  1728. about how

  1729. secure your

  1730. future is.

  1731. Humbly see

  1732. what great

  1733. needs you have

  1734. spiritually.

  1735. Whoever we

  1736. are,

  1737. whatever our

  1738. economic

  1739. status may

  1740. be,

  1741. we all

  1742. need

  1743. Christ.

  1744. And when

  1745. we come

  1746. to Christ,

  1747. the low

  1748. are lifted

  1749. up, the

  1750. higher

  1751. taken down

  1752. and,

  1753. well, we

  1754. become one.

  1755. There's an

  1756. equal playing

  1757. field before

  1758. the cross.

  1759. Brothers and

  1760. sisters in

  1761. Christ united

  1762. together, not

  1763. one above the

  1764. other, not

  1765. one thinking

  1766. better than

  1767. the other.

  1768. With Christ,

  1769. I can say,

  1770. I have

  1771. everything.

  1772. Without

  1773. Christ, I

  1774. have nothing.

  1775. everything.

  1776. How do you

  1777. think about

  1778. your economic

  1779. status today?

  1780. Are you

  1781. desiring

  1782. money?

  1783. Wanting

  1784. wealth?

  1785. Or are you

  1786. in danger for

  1787. the riches you

  1788. have and your

  1789. misuse of

  1790. wealth?

  1791. We all

  1792. need to go

  1793. to Christ,

  1794. for with

  1795. Christ I

  1796. have everything.

  1797. nothing.

  1798. Without

  1799. Christ, I

  1800. have nothing.

  1801. Let's pray

  1802. together.

  1803. Let's pray.

  1804. You can look on

  1805. the screen for

  1806. our prayer as

  1807. we reflect

  1808. on what we've

  1809. been thinking

  1810. through.

  1811. Keep

  1812. falsehood and

  1813. lies far

  1814. from me.

  1815. Give me

  1816. neither poverty

  1817. nor riches,

  1818. but give me

  1819. only my

  1820. daily bread.

  1821. Otherwise,

  1822. I may have

  1823. too much and

  1824. disown you and

  1825. say, who is

  1826. the Lord?

  1827. Or I may

  1828. become poor

  1829. and steal

  1830. and so

  1831. dishonor the

  1832. name of my

  1833. God.

  1834. Father, would

  1835. you keep us

  1836. running to

  1837. Christ, for

  1838. he is our

  1839. all and our

  1840. everything, only

  1841. he can truly

  1842. satisfy.

  1843. And would you

  1844. help us in

  1845. our plenty

  1846. to give to

  1847. those who are

  1848. most in

  1849. need,

  1850. generously,

  1851. sacrificiously,

  1852. lovingly,

  1853. just as

  1854. you poured

  1855. out your

  1856. love to

  1857. us.

  1858. Help us,

  1859. Father, we

  1860. pray, in

  1861. Jesus' name.

  1862. Amen.

  1863. Amen.

  1864. Well, if

  1865. we believe

  1866. Christ is

  1867. everything, we

  1868. will want to

  1869. sing this

  1870. song, Christ

  1871. is my

  1872. reward and

  1873. all of my

  1874. devotion.
