  1. Any of the talks from any of the speakers, we've had a variety of speakers taking us through James.

  2. You can look up the church website and you can follow along from any of the talks.

  3. Sam's passing out notes and pens. If you want one, just put your hand up and one can be brought to you.

  4. Thank you, Sam.

  5. So let's read God's Word, James chapter 5, starting at verse 7.

    James 5 chapter mention

  6. Be patient then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming.

  7. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.

  8. You too be patient and stand firm because the Lord's coming is near.

  9. Don't grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged.

  10. The judge is standing at the door.

  11. Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

  12. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered.

  13. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.

  14. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

  15. Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, not by heaven or by earth or by anything else.

  16. All you need to say is a simple yes or no.

  17. Otherwise, you will be condemned.

  18. Well, as we look at God's Word together, let's pray and ask for his help.

  19. Father, thank you for your word.

  20. Thank you that it speaks truth and grace into our lives.

  21. Amen.

  22. We need to hear from you and we need your help in understanding.

  23. So please, by your Holy Spirit, be at work and make your word effective in our life, we pray.

  24. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  25. Amen.

  47. You experience opposition because of what you believe.

  48. Do you give up?

  49. You receive news that you have an incurable illness.

  50. Are you bitter?

  51. Your loved one suddenly dies.

  52. Are you angry?

  53. Perhaps in those moments of trial and suffering,

  54. you pray more, you believe more,

  55. in the hope that God is going to make it all stop

  56. and that it's all going to go away.

  57. Well, those that James is writing to

  58. are facing all kinds of suffering.

  59. Remember how he started the letter.

  60. James chapter 1 verse 2.

    James 1:2

  61. If you go back to James chapter 1 verse 2.

    James 1:2

  62. Here's how he started the whole letter.

  63. James 1 verse 2.

    James 1:2

  64. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,

  65. whenever you face trials of many kinds.

  66. He doesn't say if you face trials,

  67. but look carefully whenever you face trials.

  68. We don't go through life suffering free.

  69. In fact, James is highlighting at the beginning

  70. that we are to expect it.

  71. We are to prepare for it.

  72. And those that he's been writing to

  73. have suffered all different kinds of trials.

  74. Some of them opposition.

  75. Some of them discrimination.

  76. Others, injustice.

  77. So have a look at chapter 5 verse 4.

  78. You'll remember this from last week.

  79. Chapter 5 verse 4.

  80. Look, the wages you failed to pay the workers

  81. who mowed your fields are crying out against you.

  82. The cries of the harvesters have reached

  83. the ears of the Lord Almighty.

  84. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgent.

  85. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.

  86. So here's the situation that people find themselves in.

  87. The rich are getting richer.

  88. The poor are getting poorer.

  89. The most vulnerable, those who are widows,

  90. the orphans, the sick,

  91. they're all suffering.

  92. And instead of equality and fairness,

  93. for some, things seem to be getting worse.

  94. Injustice is all around them.

  95. So the message is clear throughout James.

  96. Suffering is the normal experience of life.

  97. And we need to know how we are to respond

  98. when we face our particular sufferings.

  99. So how do you respond?

  100. How do you respond when trials come?

  101. Well, here's the surprise.

  102. Rather than pray for our suffering to stop,

  103. we are encouraged to be patient.

  104. Rather than pray for it to stop,

  105. we are encouraged, first of all, to be patient.

  106. Look at verse 7.

  107. Chapter 5, verse 7.

  108. Be patient then.

  109. In the light of all these trials and all these struggles,

  110. as he comes to his conclusion of his letter,

  111. be patient then, brothers and sisters.

  112. Verse 8.

  113. You too, be patient and stand firm.

  114. Well, it's easy to say, be patient.

  115. But have you any idea what it's like

  116. to be constantly accused

  117. for something you never did?

  118. Do you know what it's like to wait for months,

  119. perhaps years,

  120. to see a consultant?

  121. Have you experienced what it's like

  122. to live with ongoing, unending pain?

  123. What planet are you on, James?

  124. What do you mean to say, be patient?

  125. I'm suffering here.

  126. And I want all these trials to end.

  127. Patience.

  128. Is that the best that you can offer me?

  129. But true faith, genuine faith,

  130. is demonstrated in patience.

  131. You see, patience doesn't mean

  132. just put up with it and get on with it,

  133. grin and bear it.

  134. In this context, patience means,

  135. and you can read it on the screen,

  136. resting in the absolute certainty

  137. that God will not forget you or fail you,

  138. but will ensure that justice is done

  139. and all suffering will end.

  140. that encapsulates the theme of these verses,

  141. resting in the absolute certainty

  142. that God will not forget you or fail you,

  143. but will ensure that justice is done

  144. and that all suffering will end.

  145. So you see, when you face or receive bad news

  146. from your doctor,

  147. be patient.

  148. If you lose your job

  149. and you're struggling financially,

  150. be patient.

  151. When you experience an injustice,

  152. be patient.

  153. When you face opposition

  154. because you follow the Lord Jesus,

  155. be patient.

  156. And in the face of suffering,

  157. James gives us two reasons

  158. why we can be patient.

  159. Two reasons why we can be patient

  160. in the face of suffering.

  161. Number one,

  162. the Lord is coming.

  163. The Lord is coming.

  164. Look at verse 7 again.

  165. Be patient then, brothers and sisters,

  166. until the Lord's coming.

  167. He tells us the same in verse 8.

  168. You too be patient and stand firm

  169. because the Lord's coming is near.

  170. The coming of the Lord

  171. will ensure that justice will be done

  172. and that suffering will end

  173. for the believer.

  174. When the Lord Jesus returns again,

  175. wrongs will be put to right

  176. and our heartaches will be healed.

  177. For the Christian,

  178. and I want us all to hear this this morning,

  179. your struggles and the trials

  180. that you may be facing today

  181. or that you will face in the future

  182. are not forever.

  183. Look closely at verse 7.

  184. He says,

  185. Be patient until the Lord's coming.

  186. Injustice will not last forever.

  187. There is a set period of time

  188. in which we will go through it,

  189. but when the Lord returns,

  190. it will end.

  191. Verse 8.

  192. Be patient because the Lord's coming is near.

  193. Suffering will soon end

  194. because the Lord Jesus is soon to return.

  195. Because the Lord is coming,

  196. because His coming is certain,

  197. because His coming is close,

  198. I can be patient.

  199. He provides us with a helpful little illustration

  200. in verse 7.

  201. See how the farmer waits

  202. for the land to yield its valuable crop,

  203. patiently waiting

  204. for the autumn and spring rains.

  205. Well, we don't have to wait for rain,

  206. do we, in this country?

  207. Unfortunately, it rains all the time.

  208. But in other countries

  209. and in the context that James is writing,

  210. well, rains came just twice a year,

  211. autumn and spring.

  212. And without the rains falling,

  213. there was no fruit,

  214. there was no produce.

  215. So the farmer does what he can.

  216. He plants his seed,

  217. he tends to his crop,

  218. and then he must patiently wait.

  219. There's nothing he can do

  220. to alter or change the seasons or nature.

  221. He patiently waits.

  222. And although the dry season lasts a long time,

  223. months go by,

  224. the rains do come.

  225. And in the same way,

  226. the injustice and the sufferings

  227. that we may endure

  228. may seem to never end.

  229. The season just goes on

  230. and on and on.

  231. But the rains will come.

  232. The rains will come.

  233. The prophets used the rain

  234. as a symbol of God's promise coming

  235. to restore and renew all things.

  236. If you want,

  237. you can have a look.

  238. It's on page 914.

  239. Keep your finger in James

  240. and you can look at Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  241. Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  242. Here's an example of the prophets

  243. speaking of the coming rains

  244. as a symbol

  245. of God's promise coming

  246. to restore and renew all things.

  247. Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  248. It's on page 914.

  249. Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  250. Verse 23.

  251. God through the prophets

  252. speaking to his people.

  253. Verse 23.

  254. Be glad, people of Zion.

  255. Rejoice in the Lord your God

  256. for he has given you

  257. the autumn rains

  258. because he is faithful.

  259. He sends you abundant showers

  260. both autumn and spring rains

  261. as before.

  262. The threshing floors

  263. will be filled with grain.

  264. There's going to be

  265. a great harvest.

  266. The vats will overflow

  267. with new wine and oil.

  268. Verse 27.

  269. Then you will know

  270. that I am in Israel,

  271. that I am the Lord your God

  272. and that there is no other.

  273. Never again will my people

  274. be shamed.

  275. As Joel was speaking to the people

  276. in the circumstances,

  277. he looked forward

  278. to the time of the Lord's coming.

  279. The rains of renewal

  280. and restoration

  281. are on the way.

  282. So let me encourage you.

  283. Rest in the absolute certainty

  284. that God will not forget you,

  285. God will not fail you,

  286. but will ensure that justice

  287. is done

  288. and all suffering

  289. will end.

  290. And because the Lord is coming,

  291. it means then

  292. that I can

  293. stand firm.

  294. Look at verse 8 again

  295. of James chapter 5.

    James 5 chapter mention

  296. Go back to James chapter 5.

    James 5 chapter mention

  297. Verse 8.

  298. He says,

  299. You too,

  300. be patient

  301. and stand firm

  302. because the Lord's coming

  303. is near.

  304. I don't need to worry

  305. when the storms come.

  306. When suffering

  307. crashes into me

  308. like a tsunami,

  309. I can stand strong.

  310. The promised coming

  311. of the Lord

  312. is my anchor.

  313. It's my harbor.

  314. It's my safety.

  315. It's my refuge.

  316. God has not abandoned me.

  317. He's not going to forget me

  318. or fail me.

  319. The fact that the Lord

  320. is coming

  321. and it's absolutely certain

  322. and it's getting closer

  323. with every day,

  324. I can stand firm

  325. in my trials

  326. and in my difficulties.

  327. The Lord is coming.

  328. Stand firm.

  329. It also means

  330. that I don't have to grumble.

  331. Verse 9.

  332. Don't grumble

  333. against one another,

  334. brothers and sisters,

  335. or you will be judged.

  336. The judge is standing

  337. at the door.

  338. You see,

  339. when I experience

  340. an injustice,

  341. I don't need

  342. to seek revenge.

  343. When somebody wrongs me,

  344. I don't need

  345. to get bitter

  346. or angry.

  347. When I face

  348. discrimination

  349. or opposition,

  350. I don't need

  351. to hold a grudge

  352. against that person.

  353. The fact

  354. that the judge

  355. is coming,

  356. the judge

  357. who is going

  358. to know all things,

  359. is going to put

  360. every wrong right.

  361. So,

  362. I don't need

  363. to grumble.

  364. I don't need

  365. to give off.

  366. God will not

  367. forget you.

  368. God will not

  369. fail you.

  370. God will ensure

  371. that justice

  372. is done

  373. and suffering

  374. will end.

  375. So,

  376. reason number

  377. one,

  378. to be patient.

  379. The Lord

  380. is coming.

  381. Stand firm

  382. and don't grumble.

  383. Reason number

  384. two,

  385. to be patient.

  386. The Lord

  387. is faithful.

  388. The Lord

  389. is faithful.

  390. Verse

  391. 10.

  392. Brothers

  393. and sisters,

  394. as an example

  395. of patience

  396. in the face

  397. of our suffering,

  398. take the prophets

  399. who spoke

  400. in the name

  401. of the Lord.

  402. So,

  403. he's saying,

  404. look,

  405. stand back

  406. from your suffering.

  407. Stand back

  408. from your trials

  409. and let's look

  410. at some examples.

  411. Look at the prophets.

  412. The people

  413. in the past

  414. who spoke

  415. on behalf

  416. of God.

  417. Look at

  418. their lives.

  419. they faced

  420. all kinds

  421. of suffering.

  422. And the fact

  423. that they served

  424. God

  425. and were faithful

  426. to God

  427. didn't lessen

  428. their suffering.

  429. It actually

  430. increased

  431. because they

  432. stood with God.

  433. Jeremiah

  434. was beaten,

  435. imprisoned

  436. and faced

  437. constant threats

  438. to his life.

  439. Ezekiel

  440. endured

  441. daily opposition

  442. and rejection

  443. and in the

  444. middle of it

  445. all,

  446. his one

  447. companion,

  448. his wife,

  449. his wife

  450. dies.

  451. Daniel,

  452. a young man

  453. captured and

  454. brought to a

  455. foreign land,

  456. a refugee,

  457. ends up

  458. in the den

  459. of lions.

  460. Each of these

  461. prophets

  462. and all of them

  463. besides,

  464. they all

  465. suffered

  466. were

  467. but they

  468. kept on

  469. going.

  470. They were

  471. patient

  472. in their

  473. trials.

  474. Look at

  475. verse 11.

  476. As you

  477. know,

  478. we count as

  479. blessed

  480. those who

  481. have

  482. persevered.

  483. persevered,

  484. the word there,

  485. it's the same

  486. word for

  487. patient.

  488. We count as

  489. blessed those

  490. who have

  491. persevered,

  492. those who

  493. have been

  494. patient

  495. in their

  496. trials.

  497. Despite

  498. all their

  499. struggles,

  500. they were

  501. patient

  502. and they

  503. received

  504. their reward.

  505. James talked

  506. about that,

  507. didn't he?

  508. Do you remember

  509. chapter 1?

  510. James chapter

    James 1:12

  511. 1 verse

  512. 12.

  513. James chapter

    James 1:12

  514. 1 verse

  515. 12.

  516. Blessed

  517. is the

  518. one who

  519. perseveres,

  520. the one who

  521. is patient

  522. under trial

  523. because having

  524. stood the

  525. test,

  526. having gone

  527. through all

  528. the difficulties

  529. and struggles,

  530. that person

  531. will receive

  532. the crown

  533. of life

  534. that the

  535. Lord has

  536. promised to

  537. those who

  538. love him.

  539. Rest in

  540. the absolute

  541. certainty

  542. that God

  543. will not

  544. forget you

  545. and God

  546. will not

  547. fail you

  548. but will

  549. ensure that

  550. justice is

  551. done and

  552. suffering will

  553. end.

  554. The Lord

  555. is faithful.

  556. Of course,

  557. the best

  558. example from

  559. the prophets

  560. is Job,

  561. isn't it?

  562. Look at the

  563. end of

  564. verse 11,

  565. chapter 5,

  566. verse 11.

  567. You have

  568. heard of

  569. Job's

  570. perseverance

  571. or Job's

  572. patience

  573. and have

  574. seen what

  575. the Lord

  576. finally brought

  577. about.

  578. The Lord

  579. is full

  580. of compassion

  581. and mercy.

  582. Let's go

  583. and have

  584. a look

  585. at Job.

  586. His story

  587. is recorded

  588. for us

  589. in Scripture.

  590. We'll

  591. come back

  592. to James

  593. but go

  594. to Job.

  595. It's on

  596. page 509.

  597. Page

  598. 509

  599. if you're

  600. using the

  601. church

  602. Bible.

  603. Job

  604. or

  605. sorry,

  606. Job.

  607. So James

  608. is saying

  609. I want us

  610. to consider

  611. the life

  612. of Job.

  613. Job,

  614. we're told

  615. right at the

  616. beginning,

  617. was a

  618. blameless,

  619. upright,

  620. a man who

  621. feared God

  622. and shunned

  623. evil.

  624. So if there

  625. was anyone

  626. who deserved

  627. a suffering

  628. free life,

  629. it was Job.

  630. But if you

  631. know the

  632. story,

  633. Job suffered

  634. greatly.

  635. He lost

  636. his crops

  637. and his

  638. herds to

  639. raiding

  640. thieves.

  641. All his

  642. financial

  643. security is

  644. gone in a

  645. moment.

  646. His

  647. children

  648. all die

  649. in a

  650. tornado.

  651. Left

  652. heartbroken.

  653. And then

  654. if that

  655. isn't bad

  656. enough,

  657. on top

  658. of all

  659. of that,

  660. we're

  661. told that

  662. he lost

  663. his health

  664. to a

  665. crippling

  666. painful

  667. skin

  668. disease.

  669. Job

  670. was a

  671. man who

  672. understood

  673. and

  674. experienced

  675. suffering.

  676. How did

  677. he respond?

  678. Well,

  679. look at

  680. chapter 2

  681. verses 9

  682. and 10.

  683. His wife

  684. said to

  685. him,

  686. are you

  687. still

  688. maintaining

  689. your

  690. integrity?

  691. Curse God

  692. and die.

  693. God isn't

  694. here to

  695. help you,

  696. Job.

  697. God isn't

  698. going to

  699. do anything

  700. for you.

  701. Curse God

  702. and die.

  703. He replied,

  704. you are

  705. talking like

  706. a foolish

  707. woman.

  708. Shall we

  709. accept good

  710. from God

  711. and not

  712. trouble?

  713. In all

  714. this,

  715. Job did

  716. not sin

  717. in what

  718. he said.

  719. As time

  720. passed,

  721. his

  722. suffering

  723. increased.

  724. Job's

  725. so-called

  726. comforting

  727. friends who

  728. come to

  729. support him

  730. actually

  731. actually only

  732. added to

  733. the pain

  734. as they

  735. blamed

  736. Job

  737. for his

  738. suffering,

  739. saying you

  740. must have

  741. sinned,

  742. you must

  743. have done

  744. things wrong,

  745. God's punishing

  746. you,

  747. Job.

  748. It was

  749. adding insult

  750. to injury.

  751. How did

  752. Job respond

  753. to that?

  754. We'll have

  755. a look at

  756. Job chapter

    Job 19:25

  757. 19,

  758. verse 25.

  759. Job 19,

    Job 19:25

  760. verse 25.

  761. In the

  762. midst

  763. of his

  764. heartache,

  765. in the

  766. midst of

  767. his

  768. pain,

  769. listen to

  770. the words

  771. of Job,

  772. verse 25.

  773. I know

  774. that my

  775. Redeemer

  776. lives,

  777. and that

  778. in the

  779. end he

  780. will stand

  781. on the

  782. earth,

  783. God will

  784. rule.

  785. And after

  786. my skin

  787. has been

  788. destroyed,

  789. after I

  790. die,

  791. yet in

  792. my flesh

  793. I will

  794. see

  795. God.

  796. I

  797. myself

  798. will see

  799. him with

  800. my own

  801. eyes,

  802. I and

  803. not another.

  804. how my

  805. heart

  806. yearns

  807. within

  808. me.

  809. And when

  810. everyone

  811. had left

  812. Job,

  813. and Job

  814. was left

  815. to himself,

  816. and all

  817. Job had

  818. was the

  819. cries of

  820. his own

  821. pain and

  822. heartache,

  823. God

  824. speaks

  825. into

  826. Job's

  827. life.

  828. Have a

  829. look at

  830. Job

    Job 38:4

  831. chapter

  832. 38,

  833. verse

  834. 4.

  835. Job

  836. 38,

  837. the last

  838. few

  839. chapters

  840. of

  841. Job

  842. is a

  843. big

  844. speech

  845. from

  846. God

  847. speaking

  848. to

  849. Job.

  850. Job

    Job 38:4

  851. 38,

  852. verse 4,

  853. God

  854. speaks to

  855. him and

  856. he says,

  857. where were

  858. you when

  859. I laid

  860. the earth's

  861. foundation?

  862. Tell me

  863. if you

  864. understand.

  865. Who

  866. marked off

  867. its

  868. dimensions?

  869. Surely

  870. you know.

  871. Who

  872. stretched a

  873. measuring line

  874. across it?

  875. Or what

  876. were its

  877. footing set?

  878. Or who

  879. laid its

  880. cornerstone

  881. while the

  882. morning stars

  883. sang together

  884. and all the

  885. angels shouted

  886. for joy?

  887. Job,

  888. who created

  889. and who

  890. sustained the

  891. universe?

  892. Were you

  893. there when I

  894. put the

  895. universe into

  896. existence?

  897. Job,

  898. who rules

  899. and controls

  900. the stars

  901. and the

  902. planets

  903. and the

  904. tides?

  905. Job,

  906. who's

  907. over your

  908. life?

  909. How does

  910. Job respond?

  911. Chapter

  912. 42,

  913. verse 1.

  914. Then Job

  915. replied to

  916. the Lord,

  917. I know

  918. that you

  919. can do

  920. all things.

  921. No purpose

  922. of yours

  923. can be

  924. thwarted.

  925. Nothing

  926. will ever

  927. interfere

  928. with the

  929. plans and

  930. purposes and

  931. the promises

  932. of God.

  933. Job

  934. suffered

  935. all kinds

  936. of injustice

  937. but the

  938. Lord remained

  939. faithful to

  940. Job.

  941. And at

  942. the end

  943. of the

  944. story of

  945. Job,

  946. we read

  947. these words,

  948. chapter 42,

  949. verse 10.

  950. After Job

  951. prayed for

  952. his friends,

  953. the Lord

  954. restored his

  955. fortunes and

  956. gave him twice

  957. as much as

  958. he had

  959. before.

  960. Verse 12,

  961. the Lord

  962. blessed the

  963. latter part of

  964. Job's life

  965. more than

  966. the former

  967. part.

  968. Verse 13,

  969. and he also

  970. had seven

  971. sons and

  972. three daughters.

  973. Verse 16,

  974. after this,

  975. Job lived

  976. 140 years.

  977. He saw

  978. his children

  979. and their

  980. children to

  981. the fourth

  982. generation,

  983. and so

  984. Job died,

  985. an old

  986. man and

  987. full of

  988. years.

  989. Consider

  990. and think

  991. about the

  992. life of

  993. Job.

  994. Go back

  995. to James

    James 5 chapter mention

  996. chapter 5.

  997. Job.

  998. The point

  999. of looking

  1000. at the

  1001. life of

  1002. Job

  1003. is to

  1004. see that

  1005. in the

  1006. face of

  1007. suffering,

  1008. we are

  1009. to be

  1010. patient

  1011. like

  1012. Job

  1013. because

  1014. the Lord

  1015. is faithful.

  1016. Isn't that

  1017. what it says

  1018. at the end

  1019. of verse 11?

  1020. The Lord

  1021. is full

  1022. of compassion

  1023. and mercy.

  1024. Because the

  1025. Lord was

  1026. faithful to

  1027. the prophets

  1028. of the

  1029. past,

  1030. because the

  1031. Lord was

  1032. faithful to

  1033. Job,

  1034. the Lord

  1035. is going

  1036. to be

  1037. faithful to

  1038. you.

  1039. We may

  1040. not experience

  1041. healing in

  1042. this life.

  1043. Our troubles

  1044. may last

  1045. until we

  1046. die.

  1047. But the

  1048. Lord is

  1049. faithful and

  1050. he will

  1051. bring about

  1052. what he

  1053. has promised.

  1054. how can

  1055. I be so

  1056. sure that

  1057. God is

  1058. going to

  1059. be faithful

  1060. to me?

  1061. Well,

  1062. consider the

  1063. true and

  1064. ultimate

  1065. prophet,

  1066. the Lord

  1067. Jesus.

  1068. He has

  1069. secured

  1070. your future

  1071. by his

  1072. death on

  1073. the cross.

  1074. He has

  1075. forgiven all

  1076. your sin

  1077. and all

  1078. your failure

  1079. and that

  1080. will never

  1081. be held

  1082. against you.

  1083. He

  1084. guarantees

  1085. your

  1086. eternal

  1087. destiny

  1088. by rising

  1089. again from

  1090. the grave.

  1091. He defeated

  1092. death.

  1093. He destroyed

  1094. it.

  1095. And through

  1096. our faith

  1097. in him,

  1098. we have

  1099. the absolute

  1100. assurance

  1101. of eternal

  1102. life.

  1103. Consider

  1104. your true

  1105. prophet,

  1106. the Lord

  1107. Jesus.

  1108. My

  1109. brothers and

  1110. sisters,

  1111. rest in the

  1112. absolute

  1113. certainty

  1114. that God

  1115. will not

  1116. forget you,

  1117. God will

  1118. not fail

  1119. you.

  1120. God will

  1121. ensure that

  1122. justice is

  1123. done and

  1124. all suffering

  1125. will end.

  1126. the message

  1127. from James

  1128. is clear.

  1129. In the

  1130. face of

  1131. suffering,

  1132. be patient.

  1133. Look at

  1134. verse 12.

  1135. It's a

  1136. hard verse.

  1137. It's hard

  1138. to work

  1139. out how

  1140. it fits

  1141. in with

  1142. the rest

  1143. of what

  1144. we've

  1145. just

  1146. looked at.

  1147. But look

  1148. carefully.

  1149. He says,

  1150. verse 12,

  1151. above all

  1152. my brothers

  1153. and sisters,

  1154. do not

  1155. swear.

  1156. Don't

  1157. make

  1158. promises.

  1159. Don't

  1160. make promises

  1161. not by

  1162. heaven or

  1163. by earth

  1164. or by

  1165. anything

  1166. else.

  1167. When we

  1168. face suffering,

  1169. we can so

  1170. easily make

  1171. rash promises.

  1172. Lord,

  1173. if you get

  1174. me through

  1175. this difficulty,

  1176. I promise

  1177. I will read

  1178. my Bible

  1179. more.

  1180. Lord,

  1181. if you just

  1182. heal me,

  1183. I promise

  1184. I'm going

  1185. to serve

  1186. more at

  1187. church.

  1188. Lord,

  1189. if you

  1190. just end

  1191. this difficulty,

  1192. I promise

  1193. I'm going

  1194. to give

  1195. you more.

  1196. Have you

  1197. ever made

  1198. promises like

  1199. that in

  1200. your struggles?

  1201. I have.

  1202. I've made

  1203. many promises.

  1204. Lord,

  1205. stop the

  1206. suffering and

  1207. I promise

  1208. that I'm

  1209. going to

  1210. do better.

  1211. look,

  1212. the way

  1213. to deal

  1214. with

  1215. suffering

  1216. is not

  1217. to try

  1218. and force

  1219. God

  1220. with empty

  1221. promises.

  1222. Such

  1223. promises

  1224. only have

  1225. our own

  1226. interests

  1227. at heart.

  1228. Instead,

  1229. look at

  1230. the end

  1231. of verse

  1232. 12.

  1233. All you

  1234. need to

  1235. say is

  1236. a simple

  1237. yes

  1238. or no,

  1239. otherwise

  1240. you will

  1241. be condemned.

  1242. Don't

  1243. make these

  1244. promises

  1245. you can't

  1246. keep,

  1247. which are

  1248. actually

  1249. self-centered

  1250. and focused

  1251. on your

  1252. own

  1253. desires

  1254. about

  1255. trying to

  1256. make your

  1257. life better,

  1258. which has

  1259. no interest

  1260. in God.

  1261. Just say

  1262. yes

  1263. to God's

  1264. will.

  1265. Just say

  1266. no

  1267. to your

  1268. own will.

  1269. Lord,

  1270. I accept

  1271. what you

  1272. bring into

  1273. my life

  1274. and I

  1275. will not

  1276. fight it.

  1277. I accept

  1278. what you

  1279. bring into

  1280. my life

  1281. and I

  1282. will not

  1283. fight it.

  1284. Yes

  1285. to God's

  1286. will.

  1287. No

  1288. to our

  1289. own will.

  1290. Be

  1291. patient.

  1292. Be

  1293. patient

  1294. because

  1295. in the

  1296. face of

  1297. suffering,

  1298. remember

  1299. the Lord

  1300. is

  1301. coming.

  1302. The

  1303. Lord

  1304. is

  1305. faithful.

  1306. Rest

  1307. in the

  1308. absolute

  1309. certainty

  1310. that God

  1311. will not

  1312. forget you

  1313. and God

  1314. will not

  1315. fail you,

  1316. but will

  1317. ensure that

  1318. justice is

  1319. done

  1320. and all

  1321. suffering

  1322. will end.

  1323. Be

  1324. patient.

  1325. Let's

  1326. pray.

  1327. Amen.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. Amen.

  1334. Amen.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.

  1337. Amen.

  1338. Amen.

  1339. Amen.

  1340. Father,

  1341. you know

  1342. the trials

  1343. that each

  1344. one of us

  1345. walk in

  1346. and you

  1347. know

  1348. the

  1349. sufferings

  1350. that we

  1351. will

  1352. face

  1353. in the

  1354. future.

  1355. Not

  1356. one of

  1357. us

  1358. will

  1359. go

  1360. through

  1361. life

  1362. without

  1363. heartache

  1364. or

  1365. pain.

  1366. And in

  1367. the midst

  1368. of it,

  1369. Father,

  1370. we pray

  1371. that we

  1372. will keep

  1373. to our

  1374. memory

  1375. that you

  1376. are coming

  1377. and that

  1378. you are

  1379. faithful

  1380. and that

  1381. all who

  1382. trust in

  1383. you,

  1384. all who

  1385. look

  1386. to you

  1387. have the

  1388. absolute

  1389. assurance

  1390. that you

  1391. will not

  1392. fail us.

  1393. You will

  1394. not forget

  1395. your people

  1396. but you

  1397. will ensure

  1398. that one
