  1. Read God's Word, James 5, starting at verse 13.

  2. Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.

  3. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.

  4. Is anyone among you ill?

  5. Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

  6. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.

  7. The Lord will raise them up.

  8. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

  9. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other

  10. so that you may be healed.

  11. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

  12. Elijah was a human being, even as we are.

  13. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain,

  14. and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

  15. Again he prayed and the heavens gave rain and the earth produced its crops.

  16. My brothers and sisters,

  17. if one of you should wander from the truth

  18. and someone should bring that person back,

  19. remember this,

  20. whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way

  21. will save them from death

  22. and cover over a multitude of sins.

  23. I'm going to pray and then we're going to look at God's word.

  24. And before we do,

  25. I just want to make just a brief comment about this text.

  26. We've been looking through James.

  27. This is the last one in the series.

  28. This is probably the hardest part of James.

  29. It's one of the hardest parts in the New Testament

  30. and it's one of the hardest parts in the whole Bible.

  31. It's a difficult passage.

  32. And as we go through this,

  33. you may be thinking,

  34. I've got a question here.

  35. I'm not quite sure about that.

  36. So please,

  37. please do talk to me afterwards.

  38. Come back if you've got any questions

  39. or if something wasn't clear,

  40. please come and ask as to what it's all about.

  41. Having said it's difficult,

  42. we can ask for the Holy Spirit to help us

  43. to bring light to his word and to our lives.

  44. So let's pray for his help right now.

  45. Father, we ask for the help of your Holy Spirit

  46. to understand your word.

  47. where there is confusion,

  48. you would bring clarity.

  49. And we pray, Father,

  50. that we would learn much this morning

  51. and be encouraged and built up.

  52. And I pray that there will be nothing

  53. that I say

  54. that would bring any kind of distress

  55. to any person here,

  56. but rather that your word

  57. and the words that I speak

  58. would only lead to building up

  59. and to great encouragement.

  60. Father, please be at work.

  61. We ask in Jesus' name.

  62. Amen.

  63. So what do you think

  64. is the best thing you could do

  65. for someone in the church family?

  66. What do you think would be

  67. one of the most helpful things you could do?

  68. You might think,

  69. in practical ways,

  70. that I could maybe make a meal for somebody.

  71. I could go visit them.

  72. If they've got children,

  73. I could look after them.

  74. What would you think you could do

  75. that would help someone in your church family?

  76. Well, James tells us here

  77. the answer to that question.

  78. Look at verse 19.

  79. My brothers and sisters,

  80. if one of you should wonder from the truth

  81. and someone should bring that person back,

  82. remember this,

  83. whoever turns a sinner

  84. from the error of their way

  85. will save them from death

  86. and cover over a multitude of sins.

  87. As members of God's family,

  88. we're called to watch out

  89. for our brothers and sisters.

  90. We're to turn each other

  91. from wandering away from God

  92. and to turn each other back

  93. to the Lord Jesus.

  94. That is the best thing

  95. we could do for one another.

  96. And how are we going to do that?

  97. Well, James gives us

  98. the answer through this text.

  99. Pray.

  100. Always pray.

  101. Look at verse 13.

  102. Is any one of you in trouble?

  103. Is anybody here suffering?

  104. Are you going through trials?

  105. Are you going through struggles?

  106. Well, you know what?

  107. Pray.

  108. Pray for each other.

  109. Is anyone here happy?

  110. Is life going well for you?

  111. Are you content?

  112. Well, pray for them.

  113. Offer songs of praise.

  114. Thanksgiving to God.

  115. You see, God wants His people to pray.

  116. And the Father delights

  117. when we cry out to Him in prayer.

  118. And one of the best prayers

  119. that we can pray for each other

  120. is to pray

  121. that those who are turning

  122. and wandering away from Christ

  123. will turn back to Christ

  124. and be forgiven

  125. and be restored.

  126. Prayers that turn people

  127. who are walking away from Christ

  128. and turn them back to Christ

  129. so they can be forgiven

  130. and restored.

  131. So two big prayers

  132. that we are encouraged

  133. to pray for one another.

  134. Here's the first one.

  135. Pray for healing.

  136. Pray for healing.

  137. Look at verse 15.

  138. It tells us there

  139. that the prayer offered in faith

  140. will make the sick person well,

  141. the Lord will raise them up.

  142. And then in verse 16

  143. we get something similar.

  144. It tells us in the middle of 16,

  145. Pray for each other

  146. so that you may be healed.

  147. So we're to pray for each other's healing.

  148. But this healing

  149. is much more than just

  150. physical healing.

  151. Look at verse 14.

  152. Is anyone among you ill?

  153. Is anybody sick?

  154. Let them call the elders of the church

  155. to pray over them

  156. and anoint them with oil.

  157. So this anointing with oil

  158. was symbolic.

  159. It was a way of kind of

  160. setting the person apart,

  161. saying we're going to pray

  162. for this person

  163. and commit them to the Lord.

  164. So anoint them with oil

  165. in the name of the Lord.

  166. Now before we get into

  167. the detail of that,

  168. let me just say two things

  169. about what it's not saying.

  170. Okay?

  171. It's not saying

  172. that elders have

  173. special healing powers.

  174. As with any healing,

  175. look at verse 15.

  176. It tells us that the prayer

  177. is offered in faith.

  178. So it's not the elders demanding,

  179. but the elders entrusting

  180. to God's good and perfect will.

  181. We offer the prayer in faith.

  182. And as verse 15 also tells us,

  183. it is the Lord

  184. who will raise them up.

  185. It's not the elders,

  186. but it is the Lord

  187. through prayer

  188. that will raise them up.

  189. So the elders don't have

  190. any special healing powers.

  191. That's the first thing

  192. it's not saying.

  193. The other thing

  194. that it's not saying

  195. is that if you stub

  196. your big toe

  197. or if you suffer

  198. a little bit of man flu,

  199. that you're to call

  200. the elders.

  201. It's not saying that.

  202. Elders are not a replacement

  203. for South Dock.

  204. Yes, we should pray

  205. if we're sick

  206. and yes, we should pray

  207. if we're not feeling well,

  208. but it doesn't mean

  209. to say we call the elders

  210. for every little illness

  211. that we might have.

  212. It seems to be

  213. in this context

  214. that the illness

  215. is serious

  216. and is related

  217. to turning away

  218. from God.

  219. So look again

  220. at the beginning

  221. of verse 14.

  222. Is anyone among you sick?

  223. Let them call the elders.

  224. Well, why call the elders

  225. if somebody is sick?

  226. Well, the elders of the church

  227. are shepherds

  228. who care for the sheep,

  229. God's people.

  230. They've been given

  231. spiritual oversight

  232. of the church.

  233. They're to ensure

  234. that each and every one of us

  235. are walking in the truth

  236. and not wandering away.

  237. And where people think

  238. illness is related

  239. to their wandering

  240. away from Christ,

  241. they're to call

  242. the elders.

  243. Let me try and expand

  244. this a bit more.

  245. Remember some of the issues

  246. that James has been

  247. addressing in the church.

  248. Back in chapter 1,

  249. we saw that some of the people

  250. in the church

  251. were overlooking

  252. the most vulnerable people,

  253. the widows

  254. and the orphans,

  255. and they've left them

  256. in terrible distress.

  257. Others have been

  258. discriminating,

  259. favouring the wealthy

  260. over the poor.

  261. They were tearing

  262. each other apart

  263. by their own words,

  264. slandering one another.

  265. Fights and quarrels

  266. were existing

  267. within the church

  268. and perhaps worst of all,

  269. we saw this

  270. at the beginning

  271. of chapter 5,

  272. some were hoarding

  273. their wealth

  274. and were oppressing

  275. the weak

  276. and it seems

  277. that some of them

  278. even died

  279. because of the injustice

  280. and oppression.

  281. Terrible things

  282. were happening

  283. in the church.

  284. They were wandering

  285. away from the truth.

  286. So it seems

  287. that the sickness

  288. that is present

  289. is related

  290. to their wandering

  291. away from Christ.

  292. And the way

  293. to see them healed

  294. and restored

  295. is to pray,

  296. verse 15.

  297. And the prayer

  298. offered in faith

  299. will make the sick

  300. person well,

  301. the Lord will

  302. raise them up.

  303. If they have sinned,

  304. they will be

  305. forgiven.

  306. Now,

  307. at one level

  308. that seems

  309. straightforward,

  310. but maybe we're

  311. sitting here this morning

  312. and thinking,

  313. well,

  314. I'm not feeling

  315. so well today.

  316. I'm feeling

  317. a bit sick.

  318. I wonder

  319. if that's related

  320. to some particular

  321. sin that I might

  322. have committed.

  323. Do I need

  324. to call the elders?

  325. Well,

  326. let me give you

  327. two answers

  328. to that.

  329. First,

  330. you can read it

  331. there on the screen.

  332. In John's Gospel,

  333. chapter 9,

  334. verses 1 to 3,

  335. it tells us here

  336. that Jesus,

  337. as he went along,

  338. he saw a blind

  339. man from birth.

  340. His disciples

  341. asked him,

  342. Rabbi,

  343. who sinned,

  344. this man

  345. or his parents,

  346. that he was

  347. born blind?

  348. Oh,

  349. sorry.

  350. I've got it on the screen.

  351. There we go.

  352. Let me read it again.

  353. Okay?

  354. So,

  355. Jesus,

  356. as he went along,

  357. he saw a man

  358. blind from birth.

  359. His disciples

  360. asked him,

  361. Rabbi,

  362. who sinned,

  363. this man

  364. or his parents,

  365. that he was

  366. born blind?

  367. So,

  368. they're thinking

  369. that the reason

  370. he's blind

  371. is because of

  372. some sin somewhere.

  373. Look at Jesus'

  374. reply.

  375. Neither this man

  376. nor his parents

  377. sinned,

  378. said Jesus.

  379. But this happened

  380. so that the work

  381. of God

  382. might be displayed

  383. in him.

  384. So,

  385. Jesus wants us

  386. to be absolutely

  387. clear that if we

  388. have some illness

  389. or sickness,

  390. it doesn't always

  391. mean that it's

  392. the result of

  393. some particular

  394. sin.

  395. We need to be

  396. very,

  397. very careful

  398. about people

  399. who claim

  400. that you're sick

  401. because of some

  402. sin in your life.

  403. Some of the

  404. programs that you'll

  405. watch on the

  406. God channel

  407. will tell you

  408. that.

  409. we need to

  410. stay clear

  411. of false

  412. teaching which

  413. says if you're

  414. sick,

  415. it's because of

  416. some sin

  417. in your life.

  418. The second

  419. answer that we

  420. want to give

  421. to the question

  422. of sin and

  423. sickness,

  424. it comes in

  425. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  426. chapter 11.

  427. So,

  428. in this context,

  429. Paul here is

  430. writing about

  431. the Lord's

  432. Supper and

  433. he's really

  434. upset,

  435. he's annoyed

  436. about what's

  437. happening when

  438. they share in

  439. the Lord's

  440. Supper.

  441. So,

  442. Corinthians

  443. chapter 11

  444. verse 20.

  445. So then,

  446. when you

  447. come together,

  448. it's not the

  449. Lord's Supper

  450. you eat.

  451. For when you

  452. are eating,

  453. some of you

  454. go ahead with

  455. your own

  456. private suppers.

  457. So,

  458. it's like they

  459. all gather

  460. together in

  461. somebody's house,

  462. the wealthy

  463. are all eating

  464. and they're

  465. leaving those

  466. who don't have

  467. much outside,

  468. and they're

  469. eating their

  470. food.

  471. As a result,

  472. one person

  473. remains hungry

  474. and another

  475. one gets

  476. drunk.

  477. So,

  478. instead of

  479. celebrating

  480. the Lord's

  481. Supper,

  482. they're getting

  483. drunk on

  484. the wine.

  485. Things are

  486. in chaos

  487. and disorder.

  488. And Paul

  489. responds to

  490. them in

  491. verse 13.

  492. He says,

  493. that is why

  494. many among

  495. you are

  496. weak and

  497. ill and

  498. a number of

  499. you have

  500. fallen asleep.

  501. So,

  502. in this

  503. context,

  504. Paul is

  505. making a

  506. direct

  507. connection

  508. between

  509. their sickness

  510. and sin.

  511. he says,

  512. because you

  513. have been

  514. unrepentant,

  515. because you

  516. haven't turned

  517. back to

  518. God,

  519. some of

  520. the people

  521. in the

  522. church

  523. had even

  524. died.

  525. That's what

  526. it means

  527. when it

  528. said they'd

  529. fallen asleep.

  530. It

  531. hadn't

  532. mean they

  533. fell asleep

  534. in the

  535. service.

  536. They had

  537. actually

  538. died.

  539. You see,

  540. God takes

  541. sin seriously

  542. and sometimes

  543. God in

  544. love will

  545. discipline

  546. his people

  547. so that

  548. they turn

  549. back to

  550. God.

  551. So,

  552. go with

  553. me back

  554. to James

  555. where we

  556. were,

  557. James

    James 5 chapter mention

  558. chapter 5.

  559. So,

  560. how are

  561. we to

  562. understand

  563. this

  564. sin and

  565. sickness

  566. issue that

  567. we're looking

  568. at here?

  569. Well,

  570. look at the

  571. text carefully.

  572. Chapter 5,

  573. end of

  574. verse 15.

  575. It says,

  576. if they

  577. have sinned,

  578. they will

  579. be forgiven.

  580. it does

  581. not mean

  582. their

  583. sickness

  584. is a

  585. result of

  586. sin,

  587. but,

  588. James is

  589. saying,

  590. it could

  591. be

  592. related.

  593. So,

  594. here's how

  595. I think

  596. this all

  597. works out

  598. in practice,

  599. verses 14

  600. and 15.

  601. Let me

  602. give you a

  603. little scenario.

  604. I don't

  605. think there's

  606. anybody called

  607. Bob here.

  608. I've tried to

  609. think of a

  610. name that

  611. nobody has

  612. called

  613. Bob.

  614. There's no

  615. Bobs,

  616. so we're

  617. not thinking

  618. of anyone

  619. in particular.

  620. So,

  621. let's suppose

  622. the elders

  623. get a call

  624. from Bob.

  625. Bob.

  626. Now,

  627. Bob could

  628. be a

  629. member of

  630. the

  631. congregation.

  632. Bob could

  633. even be

  634. one of

  635. the elders.

  636. And he

  637. rings up

  638. to say,

  639. he's sick.

  640. He's not

  641. well.

  642. And Bob

  643. also knows

  644. that,

  645. well,

  646. he's been

  647. wandering

  648. away from

  649. Christ.

  650. And he's

  651. been ignoring

  652. blatant sin

  653. in his

  654. life.

  655. And in

  656. response,

  657. the elders

  658. go to

  659. pray for

  660. his

  661. healing.

  662. And as

  663. they pray,

  664. opportunity

  665. is given

  666. for confession,

  667. for repentance

  668. to the

  669. Lord for

  670. any sin.

  671. If the

  672. sickness is

  673. a result of

  674. some sin,

  675. they will

  676. be healed

  677. and forgiven.

  678. You see,

  679. sin is

  680. serious.

  681. God can't

  682. ignore it,

  683. especially

  684. among his

  685. people,

  686. the church.

  687. And while

  688. it's not our

  689. place to

  690. judge and

  691. condemn and

  692. say,

  693. well,

  694. the reason

  695. this person

  696. is sick

  697. is because

  698. of what

  699. they said

  700. or what

  701. they did,

  702. sometimes

  703. God in

  704. his kindness

  705. and in

  706. his goodness

  707. may cause

  708. somebody to

  709. be laid

  710. aside so

  711. that they

  712. can examine

  713. their own

  714. hearts and

  715. turn back

  716. to him

  717. in repentance.

  718. The writer

  719. to the

  720. Hebrews put

  721. it like this,

  722. you can

  723. follow it

  724. on the

  725. screen.

  726. God

  727. disciplines

  728. us for

  729. our good

  730. in order

  731. that we

  732. might share

  733. in his

  734. holiness.

  735. No discipline

  736. seems pleasant

  737. at the time

  738. but painful.

  739. Later on,

  740. however,

  741. it produces

  742. a harvest

  743. of righteousness

  744. and peace

  745. for those

  746. who have

  747. been trained

  748. by it.

  749. Now,

  750. let me

  751. please

  752. underline

  753. that not

  754. all sickness

  755. is related

  756. to sin.

  757. I want us

  758. to be clear,

  759. I want us

  760. all to hear

  761. that.

  762. So if you're

  763. here today

  764. and you're

  765. not feeling

  766. well and

  767. you're living

  768. in right

  769. relationship

  770. with the

  771. Lord,

  772. don't be

  773. thinking,

  774. God is

  775. doing

  776. something

  777. to me.

  778. But

  779. sometimes,

  780. in a

  781. serious

  782. matter,

  783. sickness

  784. can be

  785. part of

  786. God's

  787. discipline.

  788. We need

  789. to take

  790. sin

  791. seriously.

  792. We need

  793. to repent.

  794. and

  795. of

  796. avail

  797. of

  798. God's

  799. wonderful

  800. forgiveness

  801. of healing

  802. and

  803. restoration.

  804. So,

  805. sin

  806. and

  807. sickness,

  808. repentance

  809. and healing.

  810. Look at

  811. verse 16.

  812. So in

  813. the light

  814. of all

  815. of this,

  816. verse 16,

  817. therefore,

  818. confess your

  819. sins to

  820. each other

  821. and pray

  822. for each

  823. other so

  824. that you

  825. may be

  826. healed.

  827. God

  828. and his

  829. wonderful

  830. plan

  831. and

  832. goodness

  833. has

  834. given

  835. to

  836. us

  837. each

  838. other

  839. and

  840. through

  841. our

  842. prayers

  843. for

  844. one

  845. another

  846. we

  847. can

  848. care

  849. for

  850. each

  851. other

  852. spiritually.

  853. You see,

  854. the church

  855. is not a place

  856. where we

  857. hide our

  858. sin and

  859. where we

  860. come

  861. together

  862. and we

  863. pretend

  864. how good

  865. we are.

  866. No,

  867. the church

  868. is to be

  869. a safe

  870. and secure

  871. family

  872. where we

  873. can confess

  874. our sin

  875. and ask

  876. others

  877. to pray

  878. for us.

  879. That's what

  880. verse 16

  881. is saying,

  882. therefore,

  883. as you

  884. come together,

  885. confess your

  886. sins to

  887. each other

  888. and pray

  889. for each

  890. other so

  891. that you

  892. may be

  893. healed.

  894. Instead of

  895. condemning

  896. and judging

  897. and pointing

  898. fingers,

  899. we point

  900. one another

  901. back to

  902. the Lord

  903. Jesus

  904. who forgives

  905. all our

  906. sins,

  907. restores

  908. us and

  909. renews us

  910. because in

  911. Christ we

  912. find a

  913. fresh start

  914. and a

  915. new

  916. beginning.

  917. The sign

  918. of a

  919. healthy

  920. and a

  921. mature

  922. church

  923. is when

  924. I or

  925. you can

  926. go to

  927. another

  928. person

  929. and seek

  930. help.

  931. We can

  932. go to

  933. them and

  934. say,

  935. look,

  936. you know

  937. what,

  938. I've been

  939. really bitter

  940. and angry

  941. over these

  942. last number

  943. of days.

  944. We can

  945. share with

  946. people our

  947. struggles

  948. with addiction.

  949. Perhaps

  950. we've been

  951. watching porn

  952. and we

  953. know we

  954. shouldn't.

  955. We need

  956. somebody to

  957. help us.

  958. We need

  959. to be

  960. honest about

  961. covering over

  962. issues where

  963. we've been

  964. lying or

  965. there's been

  966. deception.

  967. Or maybe

  968. it's going to

  969. someone and

  970. facing up and

  971. saying,

  972. you know

  973. what,

  974. I haven't

  975. been loving

  976. my wife

  977. the way I

  978. should have

  979. been.

  980. Will you

  981. pray for

  982. me?

  983. Will you

  984. help me?

  985. We can

  986. confess and

  987. receive the

  988. prayers and

  989. support of

  990. our brothers

  991. and sisters.

  992. The church

  993. family is

  994. not to be

  995. a place

  996. of

  997. condemnation,

  998. but a

  999. family of

  1000. restoration,

  1001. of building

  1002. one another

  1003. up.

  1004. And as

  1005. we do

  1006. this,

  1007. we bring

  1008. healing to

  1009. our hearts,

  1010. healing to

  1011. our relationships

  1012. with one

  1013. another,

  1014. healing where

  1015. it applies

  1016. to our

  1017. bodies,

  1018. and healing

  1019. ultimately in

  1020. our relationship

  1021. with God.

  1022. Through

  1023. prayer,

  1024. as we

  1025. pray for

  1026. one another,

  1027. we turn

  1028. each other

  1029. back towards

  1030. Christ.

  1031. So,

  1032. the first

  1033. big prayer

  1034. we are to

  1035. pray,

  1036. pray for

  1037. healing.

  1038. The second

  1039. big prayer

  1040. to pray for

  1041. each other

  1042. is to pray

  1043. for restoration.

  1044. Look at

  1045. verse 17.

  1046. Elijah was

  1047. a human

  1048. being,

  1049. even as

  1050. we are.

  1051. He prayed

  1052. earnestly

  1053. that it

  1054. would not

  1055. rain,

  1056. and it

  1057. didn't

  1058. rain on

  1059. the land

  1060. for three

  1061. and a

  1062. half years.

  1063. Again,

  1064. he prayed

  1065. and the

  1066. heavens gave

  1067. rain,

  1068. and the

  1069. earth

  1070. produced

  1071. its crops.

  1072. Now,

  1073. I don't

  1074. think James

  1075. is going

  1076. and talking

  1077. about healing

  1078. and saying,

  1079. look how

  1080. wonderful

  1081. prayer is

  1082. here,

  1083. and you

  1084. know what?

  1085. With

  1086. your prayers,

  1087. you can

  1088. control the

  1089. weather.

  1090. you're off

  1091. to the

  1092. beach

  1093. tomorrow.

  1094. Stop

  1095. raining

  1096. now.

  1097. Or maybe

  1098. you want

  1099. a bit of

  1100. rain for

  1101. your flowers.

  1102. Start

  1103. raining

  1104. now.

  1105. I don't

  1106. think that's

  1107. why he's

  1108. talking about

  1109. Elijah here,

  1110. as we'll

  1111. see.

  1112. The example

  1113. of God,

  1114. of introducing

  1115. us to

  1116. Elijah as

  1117. a man who

  1118. prayed about

  1119. rain,

  1120. is because

  1121. Elijah was

  1122. used by

  1123. God to

  1124. turn people

  1125. who were

  1126. wandering

  1127. away from

  1128. God,

  1129. back to

  1130. God,

  1131. through

  1132. prayer.

  1133. You see,

  1134. verses 17

  1135. and 18

  1136. relate to

  1137. one of the

  1138. most incredible

  1139. accounts in

  1140. the Old

  1141. Testament.

  1142. So I'd like

  1143. us to go

  1144. back and

  1145. look at

  1146. that,

  1147. if you

  1148. keep your

  1149. finger in

  1150. James 5

  1151. and go

  1152. back to

  1153. 1 Kings.

  1154. I hope

  1155. some of you

  1156. managed to

  1157. read

  1158. chapter 18.

  1159. I sent a

  1160. note out

  1161. about that

  1162. in the

  1163. week.

  1164. I hope

  1165. you're able

  1166. to read

  1167. it.

  1168. If you

  1169. did,

  1170. you'll be

  1171. blessed

  1172. because it

  1173. will help

  1174. you now.

  1175. So we'll

  1176. go back

  1177. to 1

  1178. Kings 17

  1179. and I

  1180. haven't got

  1181. a page

  1182. number so

  1183. if someone

  1184. could help

  1185. me out

  1186. again.

  1187. 3-5-9

  1188. 3-5-9

  1189. to 1

    1 Kings 17 chapter mention

  1190. Kings

  1191. chapter 17.

  1192. So as

  1193. you're looking

  1194. that up,

  1195. let me set

  1196. the scene

  1197. here.

  1198. The king

  1199. at the

  1200. time over

  1201. God's

  1202. people Israel

  1203. was the

  1204. evil Ahab.

  1205. He was

  1206. worse,

  1207. the worst

  1208. king that

  1209. had ever

  1210. been.

  1211. His wife

  1212. was the

  1213. notorious

  1214. Jezebel.

  1215. What she

  1216. did in her

  1217. past time

  1218. was to

  1219. round up

  1220. all of

  1221. God's

  1222. prophets,

  1223. kill them

  1224. and then

  1225. replace them

  1226. with false

  1227. prophets.

  1228. They had

  1229. no time

  1230. for God's

  1231. words.

  1232. And as a

  1233. result,

  1234. God's

  1235. people were

  1236. on this

  1237. downward

  1238. spiral,

  1239. drifting

  1240. further

  1241. and

  1242. further

  1243. away

  1244. from

  1245. God.

  1246. They've

  1247. been

  1248. committing

  1249. spiritual

  1250. adultery.

  1251. They've

  1252. been turning

  1253. from the

  1254. one true

  1255. God to

  1256. other

  1257. gods

  1258. and living

  1259. as they

  1260. pleased.

  1261. And it's

  1262. into this

  1263. context that

  1264. Elijah arrives

  1265. and now

  1266. speaks

  1267. and now

  1268. prays.

  1269. So chapter

  1270. 17,

  1271. verse 1.

  1272. Now

  1273. Elijah,

  1274. the Tishbite

  1275. from Tishbi

  1276. in Gilead,

  1277. said to

  1278. Ahab,

  1279. remember he's

  1280. the evil

  1281. king,

  1282. the one

  1283. who's

  1284. ruling

  1285. over

  1286. God's

  1287. people.

  1288. As the

  1289. Lord of

  1290. God of

  1291. Israel

  1292. lives,

  1293. whom I

  1294. serve,

  1295. there will

  1296. be neither

  1297. dew nor

  1298. rain in

  1299. the next

  1300. few years

  1301. except at

  1302. my word.

  1303. No

  1304. rain.

  1305. Why?

  1306. Well,

  1307. God is

  1308. disciplining

  1309. his people.

  1310. Sin is

  1311. serious and

  1312. it can't

  1313. be overlooked.

  1314. God's

  1315. God's

  1316. desire

  1317. that they

  1318. would

  1319. return to

  1320. him,

  1321. be restored

  1322. and be

  1323. forgiven

  1324. or something

  1325. much worse

  1326. could happen.

  1327. Well,

  1328. after that

  1329. prayer,

  1330. about three

  1331. years later,

  1332. the people

  1333. still haven't

  1334. turned back

  1335. to God

  1336. and Elijah

  1337. calls all

  1338. the people

  1339. of Israel

  1340. together

  1341. and Ahab

  1342. and all

  1343. the false

  1344. prophets

  1345. and he

  1346. gathers

  1347. them together

  1348. at a place

  1349. called Mount

  1350. Carmel.

  1351. Look at

  1352. chapter 18

  1353. verse 21.

  1354. Chapter

  1355. 18

  1356. verse 21.

  1357. Elijah

  1358. went before

  1359. the people

  1360. and said,

  1361. how long

  1362. will you

  1363. waver

  1364. between two

  1365. opinions?

  1366. If the

  1367. Lord is

  1368. God,

  1369. follow him.

  1370. But if

  1371. Baal,

  1372. one of the

  1373. false gods

  1374. is God,

  1375. follow him.

  1376. Decision

  1377. time.

  1378. You've

  1379. been

  1380. drifting

  1381. and doing

  1382. your own

  1383. things.

  1384. Who are

  1385. you going

  1386. to follow?

  1387. Well,

  1388. after calling

  1389. all the

  1390. people

  1391. together,

  1392. Elijah gets

  1393. the false

  1394. prophets.

  1395. You might

  1396. know the

  1397. account where

  1398. all the

  1399. false prophets

  1400. come together

  1401. there to

  1402. build an

  1403. altar and

  1404. they kill

  1405. a bull and

  1406. they put

  1407. the bull

  1408. on top.

  1409. Elijah does

  1410. exactly the

  1411. same.

  1412. He builds

  1413. his altar,

  1414. he slaughters

  1415. a bull and

  1416. he puts it

  1417. on top and

  1418. then he

  1419. challenges

  1420. them to

  1421. pray.

  1422. Verse 24,

  1423. Then you

  1424. call on the

  1425. name of

  1426. your God

  1427. and I

  1428. will call

  1429. on the

  1430. name of

  1431. the Lord.

  1432. The God

  1433. who answers

  1434. by fire,

  1435. he is

  1436. God.

  1437. Then all

  1438. the people

  1439. said,

  1440. what you

  1441. say is

  1442. good.

  1443. Right?

  1444. So they're

  1445. all going

  1446. to pray,

  1447. whoever

  1448. answers with

  1449. fire upon

  1450. the altar,

  1451. well that's

  1452. going to

  1453. be the

  1454. one true

  1455. God.

  1456. So the

  1457. false prophets

  1458. get to

  1459. pray,

  1460. they pray,

  1461. they pray,

  1462. they pray,

  1463. and nothing

  1464. happens.

  1465. They shout

  1466. louder,

  1467. they start

  1468. cutting

  1469. themselves,

  1470. but nothing

  1471. happens.

  1472. Their so-called

  1473. gods are

  1474. powerless.

  1475. They offer

  1476. them absolutely

  1477. nothing,

  1478. because wandering

  1479. away from

  1480. God leaves

  1481. us empty

  1482. and unfulfilled.

  1483. Now it's

  1484. Elijah's

  1485. turn.

  1486. To make

  1487. a point,

  1488. he gets

  1489. a whole

  1490. load of

  1491. water and

  1492. he pours

  1493. it all

  1494. over his

  1495. altar,

  1496. he digs

  1497. a trench

  1498. around it

  1499. and he

  1500. pours more

  1501. water on it,

  1502. so everything

  1503. is absolutely

  1504. sodden.

  1505. And then

  1506. Elijah prays,

  1507. but look

  1508. carefully at

  1509. what he

  1510. prays,

  1511. chapter 18

  1512. verse 37,

  1513. chapter 18

  1514. verse 37,

  1515. So here's

  1516. Elijah praying

  1517. for the

  1518. people who

  1519. have been

  1520. turning against

  1521. God.

  1522. Here's what

  1523. he prays,

  1524. Answer me,

  1525. Lord,

  1526. answer me,

  1527. so these

  1528. people will

  1529. know that

  1530. you,

  1531. Lord,

  1532. are God

  1533. and that

  1534. you are

  1535. turning their

  1536. hearts back

  1537. again.

  1538. Then the

  1539. fire of the

  1540. Lord fell

  1541. and burned

  1542. up the

  1543. sacrifice,

  1544. the wood,

  1545. the stones

  1546. and the

  1547. soil,

  1548. and also

  1549. licked up

  1550. the water

  1551. in the

  1552. trench.

  1553. When all

  1554. the people

  1555. saw this,

  1556. they fell

  1557. prostrate and

  1558. cried,

  1559. The Lord,

  1560. he is

  1561. God.

  1562. The Lord,

  1563. he is

  1564. God.

  1565. You see,

  1566. God's desire

  1567. all through

  1568. this is that

  1569. his people

  1570. would stop

  1571. wandering

  1572. and turn

  1573. back to

  1574. God.

  1575. But did

  1576. you notice

  1577. how they

  1578. turned back?

  1579. Look at

  1580. verse 37,

  1581. look at

  1582. the prayer.

  1583. Answer me,

  1584. Lord,

  1585. answer me,

  1586. so these

  1587. people will

  1588. know that

  1589. you,

  1590. Lord,

  1591. are God

  1592. and that

  1593. you are

  1594. turning their

  1595. hearts back

  1596. again.

  1597. God turns

  1598. the hearts

  1599. of the

  1600. people back

  1601. to God

  1602. as Elijah

  1603. prays.

  1604. And at the

  1605. end of the

  1606. account,

  1607. Elijah prays

  1608. again,

  1609. the rains

  1610. fall after

  1611. three and a

  1612. half years

  1613. as a sign

  1614. of God's

  1615. forgiveness,

  1616. blessing and

  1617. restoration.

  1618. Now go back

  1619. with me,

  1620. please,

  1621. to James

    James 5 chapter mention

  1622. chapter 5.

  1623. Back to

  1624. James.

  1625. A big

  1626. detour,

  1627. but I think

  1628. it's helpful

  1629. for us to

  1630. understand

  1631. what's behind

  1632. Elijah's

  1633. prayer.

  1634. Now you

  1635. might remember

  1636. how James

  1637. confronted the

  1638. church that

  1639. he writes

  1640. to.

  1641. In

  1642. chapter 4,

  1643. verse 4,

  1644. look at how

  1645. James refers

  1646. to the

  1647. people.

  1648. James

    James 4:4

  1649. chapter 4,

  1650. verse 4.

  1651. You

  1652. adulterous

  1653. people,

  1654. don't you

  1655. know that

  1656. friendship with

  1657. the world

  1658. means enmity

  1659. against God?

  1660. He's saying

  1661. to them,

  1662. will you stop

  1663. committing

  1664. adultery?

  1665. Stop committing

  1666. spiritual adultery.

  1667. Stop turning

  1668. away from

  1669. God to

  1670. other lovers.

  1671. It happened

  1672. at the time

  1673. of Elijah,

  1674. it's happening

  1675. to the people

  1676. here that

  1677. James is

  1678. writing to,

  1679. and it can

  1680. happen to

  1681. you and

  1682. to me.

  1683. It's a

  1684. warning.

  1685. Don't drift

  1686. away from

  1687. the Lord.

  1688. But here's

  1689. the good news

  1690. for us.

  1691. On another

  1692. mountain,

  1693. not Mount

  1694. Carmel,

  1695. but on the

  1696. mountain of

  1697. crucifixion,

  1698. the ultimate

  1699. sacrifice took

  1700. place.

  1701. Where Jesus

  1702. Christ laid

  1703. down his

  1704. life on the

  1705. altar of the

  1706. cross.

  1707. Where he took

  1708. my sin and

  1709. your sin,

  1710. and the fire

  1711. of God's

  1712. judgment did

  1713. come down

  1714. from heaven,

  1715. and it fell

  1716. on Christ.

  1717. And now

  1718. God calls

  1719. all the people

  1720. of the world

  1721. to say,

  1722. look at this

  1723. mountain,

  1724. look at

  1725. Jesus,

  1726. look at

  1727. my son on

  1728. the altar

  1729. of the

  1730. cross,

  1731. who makes

  1732. it possible

  1733. for wanderers

  1734. like you and

  1735. me to be

  1736. restored and

  1737. be forgiven.

  1738. Just flick a

  1739. couple of

  1740. pages forward

  1741. to 1st Peter

  1742. chapter 2.

  1743. After James

  1744. comes Peter,

  1745. 1st Peter

  1746. chapter 2

  1747. verse 24.

  1748. I think this

  1749. helpfully summarizes

  1750. what we're

  1751. getting at

  1752. here.

  1753. 1st Peter

  1754. chapter 2

  1755. verse 24.

  1756. He,

  1757. talking of

  1758. Jesus,

  1759. himself bore

  1760. our sins in

  1761. his body on

  1762. the cross,

  1763. so that we

  1764. might die to

  1765. sins and live

  1766. for righteousness.

  1767. By his

  1768. wounds you

  1769. have been

  1770. healed.

  1771. For you

  1772. were like

  1773. sheep going

  1774. astray,

  1775. but now you

  1776. have returned

  1777. to the

  1778. shepherd and

  1779. overseer of

  1780. your souls.

  1781. You see,

  1782. we are to

  1783. watch out

  1784. for each

  1785. other,

  1786. point each

  1787. other back

  1788. to the

  1789. cross,

  1790. and pray

  1791. for one

  1792. another's

  1793. restoration.

  1794. So two

  1795. big prayers

  1796. we can pray

  1797. for each

  1798. other.

  1799. Pray for

  1800. healing,

  1801. pray for

  1802. restoration,

  1803. and pray

  1804. because prayer

  1805. is powerful

  1806. and effective.

  1807. Look at

  1808. what it

  1809. says in

  1810. James

    James 5 chapter mention

  1811. chapter 5,

  1812. the end

  1813. of verse

  1814. 15.

  1815. James

    James 5 chapter mention

  1816. chapter 5,

  1817. the end

  1818. of verse

  1819. 15.

  1820. Sorry,

  1821. the end

  1822. of verse

  1823. 16.

  1824. James

    James 5:16

  1825. 5,

  1826. verse 16.

  1827. It says,

  1828. the prayer

  1829. of a

  1830. righteous

  1831. person is

  1832. powerful

  1833. and

  1834. effective.

  1835. Elijah

  1836. was a

  1837. human

  1838. being,

  1839. even

  1840. as we

  1841. are.

  1842. You see,

  1843. Elijah

  1844. was a

  1845. righteous

  1846. man,

  1847. and his

  1848. prayers

  1849. were

  1850. powerful

  1851. and

  1852. effective.

  1853. They

  1854. changed

  1855. people.

  1856. Well,

  1857. you say,

  1858. well,

  1859. that's

  1860. because

  1861. Elijah

  1862. was a

  1863. prophet.

  1864. He

  1865. was

  1866. God's

  1867. specially

  1868. chosen

  1869. person.

  1870. He's

  1871. different

  1872. to you

  1873. and I.

  1874. But look

  1875. what it

  1876. says in

  1877. verse 17.

  1878. Elijah

  1879. was a

  1880. human

  1881. being

  1882. even

  1883. as

  1884. we

  1885. are.

  1886. He

  1887. was

  1888. full of

  1889. flaws

  1890. and

  1891. failures,

  1892. but yet

  1893. God

  1894. used him

  1895. to turn

  1896. people

  1897. back to

  1898. God

  1899. as he

  1900. prayed.

  1901. That

  1902. means

  1903. God

  1904. can

  1905. use

  1906. us

  1907. like

  1908. he

  1909. used

  1910. Elijah.

  1911. We

  1912. can

  1913. pray

  1914. the

  1915. same

  1916. kind

  1917. of

  1918. prayer

  1919. that

  1920. Elijah

  1921. prayed.

  1922. Answer

  1923. me,

  1924. Lord,

  1925. answer

  1926. me,

  1927. so

  1928. that

  1929. these

  1930. people

  1931. will

  1932. know

  1933. that

  1934. you

  1935. Lord

  1936. are

  1937. God

  1938. and

  1939. that

  1940. you

  1941. are

  1942. turning

  1943. their

  1944. hearts

  1945. back

  1946. again.

  1947. Now I

  1948. don't

  1949. understand

  1950. how

  1951. prayer

  1952. works.

  1953. Prayer

  1954. can be

  1955. confusing,

  1956. but this

  1957. is something

  1958. we can be

  1959. absolutely

  1960. sure of,

  1961. that God

  1962. works

  1963. when we

  1964. pray.

  1965. As we

  1966. pray these

  1967. kind of

  1968. prayers,

  1969. God

  1970. works in

  1971. the hearts

  1972. of those

  1973. who

  1974. wandered

  1975. away,

  1976. causing

  1977. them to

  1978. turn in

  1979. repentance

  1980. back to

  1981. God.

  1982. The

  1983. prayer of

  1984. a righteous

  1985. person is

  1986. powerful

  1987. and effective

  1988. and the

  1989. prayers that

  1990. we pray

  1991. for our

  1992. church

  1993. family

  1994. are

  1995. powerful

  1996. and

  1997. effective.

  1998. God

  1999. has

  2000. placed

  2001. us

  2002. into

  2003. a

  2004. church

  2005. family

  2006. to

  2007. care

  2008. for

  2009. one

  2010. another,

  2011. to

  2012. support

  2013. one

  2014. another,

  2015. and so

  2016. we

  2017. must

  2018. watch

  2019. out

  2020. for

  2021. each

  2022. other.

  2023. Verse

  2024. 19,

  2025. my

  2026. brothers

  2027. and

  2028. sisters,

  2029. if one

  2030. of you

  2031. should

  2032. wander

  2033. from

  2034. the

  2035. truth

  2036. and

  2037. someone

  2038. should

  2039. bring

  2040. that

  2041. person

  2042. back,

  2043. remember

  2044. this,

  2045. whoever

  2046. turns a

  2047. sinner

  2048. from

  2049. the

  2050. error

  2051. of

  2052. their

  2053. way

  2054. will

  2055. save

  2056. them

  2057. from

  2058. death

  2059. and

  2060. cover

  2061. over

  2062. a

  2063. multitude

  2064. of

  2065. sins.

  2066. How

  2067. do you

  2068. respond

  2069. if

  2070. you

  2071. realize

  2072. that

  2073. somebody

  2074. is

  2075. missing

  2076. for a

  2077. few

  2078. weeks,

  2079. you

  2080. haven't

  2081. seen

  2082. them

  2083. for a

  2084. while?

  2085. Do you

  2086. just

  2087. ignore it

  2088. and think

  2089. oh,

  2090. whatever.

  2091. We

  2092. should

  2093. give them

  2094. a ring.

  2095. Find

  2096. out,

  2097. make

  2098. sure

  2099. they

  2100. are

  2101. okay

  2102. and

  2103. if

  2104. they

  2105. are

  2106. wandering

  2107. to

  2108. encourage

  2109. them

  2110. and

  2111. help

  2112. them

  2113. back

  2114. to

  2115. Christ.

  2116. Do you

  2117. ever ring

  2118. to find

  2119. out how

  2120. somebody

  2121. is doing?

  2122. Maybe

  2123. you notice

  2124. sinful

  2125. patterns

  2126. and

  2127. behaviors

  2128. in your

  2129. own

  2130. life,

  2131. in my

  2132. life.

  2133. Would you

  2134. come to

  2135. me and

  2136. say,

  2137. Johnny,

  2138. I didn't

  2139. like the

  2140. way you've

  2141. been

  2142. talking,

  2143. I don't

  2144. like the

  2145. way you've

  2146. been

  2147. behaving.

  2148. you need

  2149. to

  2150. recognize

  2151. that you

  2152. need to

  2153. turn back

  2154. to God.

  2155. You see,

  2156. God has

  2157. placed us

  2158. in his

  2159. family to

  2160. restore

  2161. one another

  2162. and there

  2163. is no

  2164. sin that

  2165. is so

  2166. great

  2167. that God's

  2168. grace

  2169. cannot

  2170. deal with.

  2171. I need

  2172. you and

  2173. you need

  2174. me.

  2175. Together

  2176. we need

  2177. one another

  2178. and the

  2179. best thing

  2180. we can

  2181. do for

  2182. each other

  2183. is to

  2184. pray.

  2185. Pray that

  2186. we will

  2187. turn from

  2188. our sin,

  2189. turn from

  2190. our wandering

  2191. away from

  2192. him and

  2193. turn back

  2194. to Christ

  2195. in repentance.

  2196. Prayer is

  2197. powerful

  2198. and effective.

  2199. Through

  2200. prayer we

  2201. are healed

  2202. and restored.

  2203. Let's

  2204. now just

  2205. take a

  2206. time to

  2207. pray.

  2208. I'm

  2209. going to

  2210. leave

  2211. just a

  2212. quiet

  2213. time

  2214. just for

  2215. you to

  2216. bring your

  2217. own personal

  2218. requests to

  2219. the Lord.

  2220. But here's

  2221. how I would

  2222. like us to

  2223. pray.

  2224. Maybe you

  2225. know somebody

  2226. today,

  2227. somebody in

  2228. your own

  2229. family,

  2230. maybe a

  2231. friend,

  2232. maybe somebody

  2233. from this

  2234. church,

  2235. someone who

  2236. you know is

  2237. wandering

  2238. away,

  2239. who has

  2240. turned away

  2241. from God.

  2242. Pray for

  2243. that person

  2244. now.

  2245. Pray that

  2246. God would

  2247. work in

  2248. their life

  2249. and turn

  2250. that family

  2251. member,

  2252. that friend,

  2253. that person

  2254. to repentance

  2255. so that they

  2256. can know

  2257. full healing

  2258. and full

  2259. restoration.

  2260. restoration.

  2261. Let's just

  2262. do that

  2263. now in

  2264. the

  2265. quietness.

  2266. Let's just

  2267. do that now in

  2268. the quietness.

  2269. Welcome

  2270. to the

  2271. stop.

  2272. Thank you.

  2273. Thank you.

2274. Father, you know those who we care for and love, and we know that you long that each and every one of us would walk closely with you.

2275. We pray that you would hear our prayer, that you would answer, and by your grace you would cause your wandering people to turn back to you.

2276. We pray, Father, that we ourselves, that you would forgive us of our sin.

2277. Forgive us where we have not walked with you as we should.

  2278. Father, restore us.

  2279. Make us strong.

2280. By your grace, enable us that we would keep walking with you, we pray.

2281. In Jesus' name we ask.

  2282. Amen.

2283. We're going to sing together.

2284. Father, come thou fount of every blessing.

  2285. Amen.

  2286. Amen.

  2287. Thank you.
